Stormy weather causes flooding, travel delays across the East Coast

NEW JERSEY (WPVI) -- Severe storms caused disruptions along the roads and railways Sunday evening,impacting travelers up and down the East Coast.

One driver captured video of a road underwater in Wayne, New Jersey.

Heavy downpours in North Jersey forced Amtrak to temporarily suspend rail traffic between New York and Philadelphia.

Officials said it was due to flooding conditions in Newark around 8:20 p.m.

"I'm devastated. They keep changing the update," said Marcia Roye, who planned to travel to Maryland from the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. "I'm going to wait it out, and hopefully I'll get there at some point."

Amtrak announced service was restored between 30th Street Station and New York Penn Station around 10:30 p.m.

In Bethany Beach, Delaware, storms caused major flooding and road closures.

State police said Route 1 northbound at the Indian River Inlet Bridge was closed to traffic at Fred Hudson Road due to flooding on the north side of the bridge.

Police advised drivers to find an alternate route until the road was cleared.

In Ocean City, New Jersey, the beach closed when thunder and lightning rolled through .

Officials with Ocean City Beach Patrol said there were at least five major rescues in the water due to the intense waves and swimmers who were out of sight.

In Ventnor City, beach patrol leaders said waves were rough there as well, with most reaching five to six feet high.

Lifeguards there made 17 rescues on Sunday, authorities said. A rip current warning is in effect at the Jersey Shore until Tuesday.

All United Airlines Flights: These Are The Shortest Routes From Newark

• United Airlines has 197 flights scheduled to three destinations this month, under 175 miles from Newark.
• These destinations will be mostly served by the airline's regional aircraft fleet of CRJ-550s and Embraer E175s.
• Competing as the dominant carrier, United Airlines can operate several short-haul routes from Newark with negligible competition.

While Newark remains a significant operations hub for United Airlines, operating a significant number of transatlantic flights and other long-haul routes, the airline also operates a handful of extremely short-haul routes. Overall, the airline has scheduled 197 flights this month, which will be operated to three destinations, all of which are less than 175 miles away from its hub at Newark.

This article will examine the short-haul routes from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and analyze the different types of aircraft utilized in these services. It comes as no surprise that all these flights are operated by United Airlines.

Newark to Albany

143 miles from newark.

This August, according to data from Cirium , United Airlines has scheduled a total of 62 flights to be operated between its hub, EWR, and Albany International Airport (ALB). The airline plans on utilizing CRJ-550s for 61 of these flights and the one remaining flight is scheduled to be operated by an Airbus A319.

As a combined total of these operations, the airline will have a total of 3,176 seats on offer on this route.

Both these aircraft types are operated using a three-class configuration, which includes United First, United Economy Plus and United Economy cabins.

These flights, on average, have a flight time lasting between 35 minutes and 40 minutes.

Data from FlightRadar24.com shows that one other service operated on this route on August 13th. It was an A321neo service operated by the All-Business Class airline La Compagnie.

How All Business Class Airline La Compagnie Works

With just two aircraft, La Compagnie has been flying all business class services since 2014.

Newark to Providence, Rhode Island

160 miles from newark.

The airline's second-closest destination from Newark is Providence Rhode Island International Airport (PVD), to which it has scheduled 75 flights this month. Using its fleet of CRJ-550s and Embraer E175s, United offers 4,088 seats on this route.

From the 75 scheduled services, 62 flights will be operated by the CRJ-550s, while the remaining 13 will be operated by the E175s.

Like the CRJ-550, the E175s are also configured with three cabin classes.

*Of the two configurations within United's E175 fleet, this is the one utilized on this route.

Skywest to operate 20 additional embraer e175s for united airlines.

The agreement will strengthen SkyWest Airlines' existing partnership with United Airlines.

Newark to Ithaca

171 miles from newark.

The third route on this list is just short of 175 miles: Newark to Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (ITH). This route has 60 flights scheduled for the month of August, and United Airlines offers 3,586 seats on this route utilizing its CRJ-550s and E175s.

The CRJ-550s are scheduled to be deployed on 37 of these flights, with the remaining 23 flights scheduled to be operated by the E175s. On this route, however, the airline will deploy both configurations of the E175.

The aircraft configuration for the CRJ-550 remains the same on this route.

Considering that United Airlines has a stronghold in Newark and remains the dominant carrier, the airline is able to operate on these routes (and several others, for that matter) with little to no competition.

Residents in Newark and Sherwood are being consulted on 22 potential locations for new traveller sites.

The district council says the traveller community forms a "longstanding" part of the district's poulation and is required to meet the housing need for all sections of society, which includes sites for travellers.

A new document has detailed this need and is asking for public consultation on 22 sites, some of which are currently not considered suitable, so residents can voice their thoughts on the situation.

The 22 sites were put forward by private landowners who believe the areas to be suitable for travellers.

Speaking of the plans councillor Roger Blaney, chairman of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s planning committee, said: "As part of this report, there are proposed plans for the allocation of new Gypsy and Traveller sites in the district.

"We are required by the Government to provide land for not only housing and commercial development, but also for Gypsy and Traveller sites.

"Newark is home to a diverse community, which includes its valued and historic connection with the Traveller traditions.

"The sites we are considering allocating have been promoted to the district council as suitable by landowners and/or agents.

"We have given our suggested views on the suitability of this land from a planning perspective but we now need local residents to give us their thoughts on this.

"Alongside proposed land allocations, we are publishing proposed amendments to the policies which we will pay regard to when deciding planning applications."

The council says feedback can be given up to 5pm on September 21 this year and the potential sites include:

The report, which can be read online , states there is the need for 118 sites between now and 2034, including 77 over the five years from 2019 to 2024.

It also allows public views to be lodged regarding land allocations for housing across the Newark, Southwell, Nottingham Fringe, Sherwood and Mansfield areas.

Councillor Blaney added: "This document is incredibly important as it outlines proposed changes to our housing and employment land allocations alongside a review of other key planning policies, including those concerning affordable housing provision.

“The fact that we are one of only a handful of planning authorities in the county to not need to allocate additional land for housing and employment provision is testament to the very careful previous decisions we have taken and the continuing delivery of new homes, jobs, and affordable housing across the district.
