Learn more about North Macedonia (Macedonia)

Best time to visit north macedonia.

North Macedonia has a climate somewhere between a transitional continental and Mediterranean climate, which can vary greatly between seasons and regions. The country’s mountainous areas can be subjected to brutally cold winters (December to February), while the lower-lying areas can reach 104°C during summer (June to September). Between May and September is the best time to visit, unless you’re into skiing.

Culture and customs

Centuries-old traditions still take place, many of which incorporate the cultures of rulers gone by (notably the Ottoman Empire who ruled for 500 years). Locals will proudly put on their best folk costume to play traditional music, dance traditional dances (such as the ‘Oro’ circle dance), or take part in rituals passed down for generations. Ethnic North Macedonians – who make up the majority of the population (about 67%) and are largely Orthodox Christians – are frequently at odds with the country's notable Albanian population (about 23%), who are predominantly Muslim. Despite their differences, both groups tend to share conservative and patriarchal values. Visitors should be aware that women are expected to dress modestly and both men and women are expected to cover their knees and shoulders when visiting a mosque or church.

Eating and drinking

North Macedonian cuisine is a delicious mix of Balkan, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences. Rustic dishes are made with plenty of locally grown produce (thanks to the country’s warm and pleasant climate) and fresh fish from the country’s rivers and lakes.

Must-try foods in North Macedonia

1. Tavche gravche

North Macedonia’s version of baked beans is also their national dish. White beans are first boiled and then baked with onions and herbs in a clay pot to create a fragrant and healthy meal.

2. Pastrmajlijada

An oval-shaped bread pie is topped with cubes of meat (usually pork or lamb) and baked to create this savory snack sometimes referred to as a ‘North Macedonian pizza’.

3. Shopska salad

Chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and olives topped with plenty of salty white cheese. Similar to a Greek salad, shopska is a staple served at almost every restaurant.

Geography and environment

Located in southeast Europe , North Macedonia shares its border with Serbia , Bulgaria , Greece , and Albania. Breathtaking mountains – perfect for hiking and climbing in the summer and skiing in the winter – give way to fertile flats. The Dinaric Alps slice through the west and the Vardar Valley occupies much of the central region. Despite being landlocked, North Macedonia contains many rivers and lakes, including the magnificently scenic Lake Ohrid, one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe.

History and government

Early history.

Even by Balkan standards, North Macedonia’s history is characterized by complexity and controversy. Going back to the days of Alexander the Great (the country’s favorite son), North Macedonia has been pin-balled between external powers, from the Romans to the Byzantines, the Serbs to the Ottoman Turks, and the Bulgarians to the Greeks. In fact, it wasn’t until 1991 that the country officially attained its status as an independent nation – and even that remains a point of contention in certain circles.

From the sixth century AD until the fourteenth, the territory was wrestled to and fro between the Byzantines, Slavs, Bulgars, and Serbs before eventually falling to the Ottoman Empire in 1371. The country remained under Turkish rule until the empire’s decline in the eighteenth century, then was once again split up but this time between Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Various pushes for independence and ‘reunion’ with Bulgaria were then stymied by the two World Wars and the advent of communism.

Recent history

At the conclusion of World War II, the country was incorporated into the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia under the leadership of Tito – an era during which, by and large, the territory prospered. With the collapse of European communism, however, came new calls for Macedonian independence, and the state peacefully ceded from the republic in 1992.

Wary of ‘Macedonia’ being used as the country’s proposed name due to implied claims to Aegean Macedonia, Greece made its objections known and the compromise ‘The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’ was eventually arrived at. Greek ire was re-aroused in 1994, culminating in its enforcement of an economic embargo that was eventually lifted upon Macedonia’s changing of its flag and agreeing to discussions about its name. The country evaded being embroiled in the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s but experienced a potentially catastrophic civil conflict from 1997-2001 over tensions with its sizeable Albanian population. Hostilities were becalmed with a NATO ceasefire, but the Albanian-Macedonian relationship is still a touchy subject that’s best avoided.

In 2019 Macedonia agreed to change its name to North Macedonia and Greece agreed to stop blocking its entry to NATO and the EU.

Festivals and events

The galičnik wedding festival.

Back in the good old days, the villagers of Galičnik had only one day each year when North Macedonian couples could get married: the 12th of July. These days, starry-eyed lovers can take their vows on whichever day they please, but for one lucky couple, a traditional wedding ceremony is still a possibility. Held on the weekend closest to the 12th of July, the Galičnik Wedding Festival commemorates the custom with dances, elaborate dresses, and a horse bridle being placed on the bride as a test of her obedience. Any North Macedonian couple that has already been married in the civil service can apply for the role of an official couple, with the winning entrant generally being the one with the prettiest bride.

Tikveski Grozdober (Grape Carnival)

Each September, Kavadarci, a small town in North Macedonia’s seriously scenic wine-growing region, plays host to the Tikveški Grozdober festival. A celebration of both the town’s liberation and the beginning of the grape harvest, the festival swells with food stalls and music concerts and culminates in an extravagantly costumed carnival procession through the town’s main streets. Oh, and much wine drinking.

Ilinden National Festival of Song and Dance

The oldest folk festival in the country, the Ilinden Days, celebrates all the folk cultural edifices that have come to represent North Macedonian identity over the years. Folk songs and dancing take center stage here, all performed in traditional garb with traditional instruments. Held over four days, it provides a fascinating insight into traditional North Macedonian culture and preserves its history.

Pivo Fest Prilep Beer Fest

North Macedonia’s breweries aren’t as prolific as its wineries, but beer is still a pretty big player in national culture and deemed worthy of a festival. The first Pivo Fest Prilep was held in 2003, and, in contrast to many of the country’s other tradition-orientated festivals, the focus here is on live music, grilled meats, skimpy attire, and abundant ales. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s now one of the most popular summer events in the country.

Carnival Procka

Kicking off three days before the Easter fast begins, the Procka Carnival, which is also held in Prilep, is a celebration of the unconditional forgiveness demonstrated by Jesus for his fellow humans. During this brief holiday, the young ask for forgiveness from their elders, who reply by saying ‘you are forgiven from me and from God.’ If this all sounds a bit somber (not to mention presumptuous), there are also great feasting opportunities in preparation for the fasting ahead, and things are livened up with parades of highly decorative ‘anything goes’ costumes.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Saints Cyril and Methodius Day

Republic Day

Independence Day

1941 Partisan Day

Please note that the dates of  North Macedonia's public holidays  may vary.

The narrow cobbled streets of Skopje’s Old Bazaar (Carsija), the largest bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul, offer a more unique shopping experience. Step back in time to the days of Ottoman rule and browse craftsmen shops selling unique jewelry, handmade textiles, and terracotta pots while locals sit outside cafes savoring sweet desserts and strong coffee.

Some stores in North Macedonia allow travelers to shop tax-free. Look for a blue and white ‘Tax-Free’ sign in store windows and make sure to ask for a Global Blue refund form when making your purchase. Get this form validated by a customs official at the airport when you are leaving the country (they’ll want to see the item and receipt as well), then take it to the Global Blue refund office to get your money back.

Is tipping customary in North Macedonia?

Roaming agreements are in place with most of the major international phone companies, and coverage is generally pretty good.

Discretion is highly advised for LGBTQI travelers in North Macedonia. There are no laws protecting the LGBTQI community from discrimination and travelers are advised to avoid public displays of affection. That being said, there is a small gay scene in Skopje.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex  or   ILGA   for further research before you travel.

Why did Macedonia change its name to North Macedonia?

After declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Macedonia chose their name, which strained relations with nearby Greece, which also has a region called Macedonia. This has meant that since that time, Greece has blocked Macedonia's entry to NATO and the European Union (EU). In 2019, Macedonia agreed to change their name to North Macedonia and Greece agreed to stop blocking its entry to NATO and the EU.

The largest tourist center in Macedonia, known as Jerusalem of the Balkans, is visited by thousands of tourists every year. It is also known as the “City of Light”, a literal translation of its old name, Lychnidos. The Ohrid region is included in the UNESCO World Heritage. According to one legend, written by the Miladinov Brothers, when the Ohrid fortress was made, Emperor Justinian climbed the hills on which the city lies, and, looking at the beautiful surroundings, exclaimed “oh-hill”, which means – a beautiful hill. Since then, the city is called Ohrid. Modern Ohrid is the heir of the ancient Lychnidos. According to the data, the city was first mentioned 2,400 years before the new era. Lihnidos was on the Via Egnatia road, the oldest and most significant Roman traffic route in the Balkans. In the IX and X Century AD Ohrid became a cradle of the Slavic literacy, in the times when St. Kliment of Ohrid established the First pan-Slavic University in Europe. By the end of the X and beginning of the XI Century, Ohrid was the centre of Samuel’s Empire

It is the largest city in the country and at the same time it represents an administrative-political, economic, cultural and educational-scientific centre. The city of Skopje was called Skopia, and the Slavs also referred to it as Skopie, Skopje or Skoplje. In 1962 due to heavy rains, the river Vardar flooded Skopje. The flood was an indication of the largest earthquake the city experienced. On July 26, 1963, at 5:17 am, the city was devastated by an earthquake measuring 6.1 according to the Richter seismic scale. Due to the earthquake, 1,070 people have lost their lives, 90% of the city buildings have been demolished, and over 20,000 people have been left homeless. After the earthquake, the city began to be built on a model of the designs of Kenzo Tange and Adolf Ciborovski. The old railway station, today is a museum of the city of Skopje and a symbol of the great earthquake. The clock of the station has forever stopped at the fatal 05.17 hrs. in the morning.

Amex GBT Blends AI With Agents to Win Business Travel Share

Sean O'Neill

Sean O'Neill , Skift

August 26th, 2024 at 3:08 PM EDT

The travel-management giant is using AI to read and respond to trip requests via emails. The goal is to free up human agents for more critical tasks, like perhaps explaining to executives why they can't expense that "team-building" trip to Vegas.

Sean O'Neill

Amex GBT (American Express Global Business Travel) has become a giant since spinning out from American Express a decade ago. Last year, it helped employees at about 20,000 companies book $6.3 billion in travel transactions . It’s probably the largest travel management company by sales, though many competitors don’t disclose their financials publicly, making comparisons tricky.

In March, Amex GBT announced plans to buy CWT , a travel management company formerly known as Carlson Wagonlit Travel, for $570 million. Britain’s antitrust watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, is taking a closer look at the planned transaction, and its process has delayed the proposed merger date into next year.

Quarterly earnings reports provide snapshots. However, a longer-term perspective can be useful to see what’s driving the company’s competitive position.

So, Skift got an update from Evan Konwiser , chief marketing and strategy officer.

Software + Service

  • Konwiser emphasized Amex GBT’s evolution from a predominantly services company to a software-and-services hybrid. While many legacy competitors remain more than just agents helping people book travel, Amex GBT can offer multiple solutions tailored to different market segments rather than being one-size-fits-all.
  • The company has invested heavily in building its software capabilities through acquisitions and organic development. Its 2021 acquisition of Egencia , Expedia’s business travel unit, and 2016 purchase of tech firm KDS helped. It’s built or bought self-booking tools for customers, aggregation and relevant display of travel options, and policy engines that overlay what an individual company’s rules may be on top of a universe of options.
  • Konwiser said that tech enables the company to handle mass rebookings during large-scale disruptions. He cited the recent disruptions that resulted from a mass outage related to Crowdstrike security software.
  • “We use CrowdStrike for our own software systems, and our technology team saw what was happening in APAC and stopped the upgrade while Europe and North America were still sleeping,” Konwiser said. “We were up and running way faster than a lot of other companies, and we enabled our agents to respond to the travel chaos.”

AI and Automation

  • Konwiser described how Amex GBT is using AI. Example: AI-driven email servicing can improve efficiency and free up human agents for more critical tasks.
  • “We’ve always done a tremendous amount of servicing by reading emails from customers, but it’s been a huge challenge for us because it’s not scalable,” Konwiser said.
  • When agents manually read, route, and respond to every message, it creates bottlenecks and inconsistent service.
  • Natural language processing can now accurately categorize incoming messages, from urgent flight changes to routine invoice requests. AI can also draft responses or initiate relevant actions to help agents respond more quickly.
  • Not all players can capitalize on this opportunity as well as Amex GBT, Konwiser claimed. Online-only booking sites lack skilled agents, and traditional agencies may not have the tech capabilities.
  • “Our proactive traveler care technology has been getting steadily better at both predicting and quickly reacting to delays and cancellations by automating a queue of outbound communication to triage and prioritize problems,” Konwiser said.

Beyond Just Bookings

  • The company intends to create more integrated experiences across travel, payment, and expense management.
  • Earlier this year, it integrated American Express virtual cards into the Amex GBT Neo1 spend management platform.
  • “As a small business, you can sign up and start using it the same day by linking your Amex card,” Konwiser said. “You can deploy virtual cards with dynamic controls to all your people right in the tool to gain visibility and control over how your employees spend.”

Adapting to Airline and Hotel Supplier Wishes

  • Konwiser said Amex GBT has rapidly deployed content from NDC (the new distribution capability) . Several airlines believe they’ll sell more using a more modern form of data exchange, NDC, instead of decades-old methods.
  • “The good news is, because of all the work we’ve done over the last few years, rolling up our sleeves with airlines, with the GDSes [global distribution systems] and other tech partners, we’re now able to really deploy NDC at scale,” Konwiser said. “That continues to accelerate.”
  • “But our view is we’re going to deploy NDC content only in a way that doesn’t break things for our customers,” Konwiser said. “The servicing has to work, and the offers have to work.”
  • “NDC isn’t modern retailing, but it might be a potential gateway to modern retailing,” he said.

Sustainability

  • As large corporate clients grapple with net-zero commitments, Amex GBT is developing tools to help corporations make travel choices that cut their carbon impacts.
  • “A lot of companies signed up for net zero goals,” Konwiser said. “Well, it’s 2024. If you have a 2030 interim goal, the rubber has to hit the road.”

Between the lines : Konwiser implicitly addressed competition from tech-focused startups that have raised hundreds of millions in funding, such as Navan and TravelPerk. He emphasized Amex GBT’s strength in combining technology with operational expertise.

These days, people with disabilities are able to travel with greater ease, compared to years past. However, with so many aspects of daily life having been digitized, there are still significant barriers that need to be addressed.

The information presented within this guide is aimed at website owners seeking to learn the ropes of web accessibility and to create a more inclusive online environment for people with disabilities. Technical elements are described in layman’s terms, and, as a rule, all topics pertaining to the legalities of web accessibility are presented in as simplified a manner as possible. This blog has no legal bearing, and cannot be relied on in the case of litigation.

When was the last time you took hotel bed height into account when making vacation plans? Or have you ever had to consider which hiking trails you could reach without climbing a curb?

Whether or not these factors cross your mind, accessibility has long posed significant questions within the travel industry. accessiBe researched the increasing accessibility of travel—as well as its pain points in an increasingly digital world—to determine how to improve travel technology design for the future.

This is the third blog article in our ongoing series on accessibility within the travel industry. We encourage you to check out the first two installments:

  • Why vacation rental property owners should care about web accessibility
  • What should short term rental property owners do to become accessible right now?

Those with mobility disabilities spend $58.2 billion on travel every year, according to a 2022 report by travel marketing company MMGY Global. Additionally, they take about as many trips in a year as those without mobility disabilities, often taking caregivers or family members with them as well. Thanks to the efforts of disability advocates across the country, popular destinations like Mesa, Arizona, and New York's Hudson Valley have invested in accessibility via wheelchair-friendly trails and better infrastructure surrounding top attractions. Several major cruise lines, including Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line, have likewise tailored their amenities toward folks with limited mobility.

New travel agencies, founded to serve those with accessibility needs, are also working to improve the space.

"We decided that the traditional accessibility of the ADA was not enough," Joy Burns, alliance and community coordinator at Wheel the World, told Stacker Media. The platform maps over 200 data points such as the height of beds, circumference of a room, and turning space to determine how accessible a location is to travelers with disabilities.

Wheel the World is also part of another growing movement in travel: digitization. It's no secret that, much like the rest of our lives, the travel industry has increasingly moved online. According to analytics platform Data.ai, in 2023, smartphone users downloaded travel apps more than 3 billion times , and they spent nearly 16 billion hours on those apps, compared to 2.68 billion downloads and 12.66 billion usage hours in 2022.

Hotel reservations, flight tickets, day trips, dinner reservations—just about every aspect of vacation prep now happens on a screen. Even something as simple as ordering off a menu often requires scanning a QR code.

This shift toward digital trip planning has opened up new possibilities for travelers with disabilities. "In the past, when a person with a disability called a hotel, you'd get very basic information," she said. "Now, by digitizing all that information, you know exactly what to expect when you show up. It's given so much power and much more confidence to the traveler."

Though the increased digitization of travel has helped further accessibility in many ways, it has also brought about new issues. Those problems are often particularly apparent within the community of people with disabilities.

According to a 2021 Pew Research Center, Americans with disabilities are less likely to own digital devices . About 81% of U.S. adults without disabilities said they had a desktop or laptop, compared to 62% of Americans with disabilities. Similarly, 88% of U.S. adults without disabilities reported having smartphones compared to merely 72% of Americans with disabilities.

People with mobility challenges may struggle to hold a mouse, operate a keyboard, or read a screen, especially since website design often doesn't account for universal accessibility principles. In fact, the 2024 Web Accessibility in Mind report found that 95.9% of home pages failed to meet the organization's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines , which sets the standard for accessibility online. For example, checkout pages that "time out" after a certain amount of time has elapsed can add an extra layer of difficulty to travel planning. Taking additional steps like adding alternative text alongside images helps people with vision impairments understand the contents of a page better.

Some booking platforms and travel agencies have begun improving digital travel tools to combat these issues. That includes creating websites that people with vision impairments can easily use or designing travel apps based on feedback from individuals with disabilities .

Others offer round-the-clock phone assistance to those needing help navigating their site. In the era of chatbots and automated answering services, having a helpful, human voice on the other end of a phone call can go a long way toward making travel more accessible. But as Burns is quick to point out, these are simply starting points. Much more must be done—in both physical and digital spaces—to foster truly accessible travel experiences .

With so many different disabilities, "you can't say one size fits all because disability is so specific. I think digitizing all that information is the best way to make a better experience for the traveler," Burns said. In an increasingly digital world, even making that information available online would go a long way toward a more open, accessible world for all kinds of travelers.

You'll soon need a Real ID to fly in U.S. Here's how to get one.

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: August 21, 2024 / 3:43 PM EDT / CBS News

Flying within the U.S. will soon require an extra document that's more secure than a state-issued driver's license or ID if you don't want to lug around your passport with you.

Beginning in May of next year, all U.S. travelers will be required to have the official document, known as a Real ID, on hand when traveling domestically by air. As an alternative, they may carry their passports with them.

The initiative is a long time coming. It was initially slated for enforcement beginning in May 2023, but the deadline was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here's everything you need to know, including what is required to apply, and how and where to do so.

What is a Real ID?

It's essentially an enhanced form of identification which, beginning May 7, 2025, will be required to access certain federal facilities, board commercial aircraft, and enter nuclear power plants, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses, permits, and ID cards. It's designed to reduce identity fraud, as it also prohibits Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel from accepting cards that don't meet the new minimum standards, according to the DHS.

Who needs one?

Any traveler who is 18 years or older who plans to fly domestically or visit certain federal facilities will require a Real ID, or an alternative acceptable form of identification, such as a passport. Beginning May 7, 2025, TSA will only accept Real ID cards with the compliant star marking. A handful of states including Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Vermont are issuing Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL) with a flag marking, which also meet Real ID standards.

Do I have a Real ID?

All Real IDs have a star marking in their top right corner.

If you recently renewed your driver's license, it could be an Enhanced Driver's License, or EDL, which also meets Real ID standards. Check the top right corner of your license for an American flag, indicating it is Real ID-compliant. If it doesn't have the stamp, it is not in compliance with the act.

How do I get one?

All U.S. states are issuing Real ID cards through their driver's licensing agencies, with requirements varying by state. Many offices require a reservation, which you can make online.

Visit the DHS website , and click on your state of residence for specific instructions on how to apply, as well as what documents you'll need to bring with you to your appointment. Typically you'll need your social security card, proof of citizenship, and multiple proofs of residence.

How much does it cost?

There is no additional fee for a Real ID, but standard DMV processing fees do apply. Getting an enhanced ID costs $30.
