For those who drink, an unmissable part of visiting Belgium is the chance to explore its beer culture . Aside from drinking copious amounts of different beers, another way is to go on a tour of one of the country’s breweries. While I had several different choices of breweries to visit, I decided to pick one of Belgium’s most prolific beers, Stella Artois .

There were plenty of things I was keen to see when visiting Leuven , but the Stella Artois Brewery was near the top. After all, Stella is one of the most internationally recognizable Belgian beers. What resulted was an especially informative and engaging brewery tour through a cultural landmark of the city of Leuven .

Leuven’s Beer History

De Lantaarn Cafe, Brewery Tour

It’s fair to say that beer has had a major role in the history of Leuven.

The city’s brewing legacy extends back far before Stella Artois, with evidence of breweries existing as early as 1366. Leuven owes its tradition of beer in part to its prosperous university and strong academic culture, like many cities with historic ties to brewing.

Rather than associating this link with an academic understanding of the brewing process, most people tend to simply connect students and drinking!

The importance of Leuven’s brewing industry didn’t have an impact on just the city’s growth, but also its very landscape. Like in many Belgian cities , the Vaart canal was built to link Leuven with the neighbouring city of Mechelen. Since the building of the Vaart, the surrounding Vaartkom area has had strong ties with the city’s brewing culture.

Artois Leuven

One historical building of the Vaart that still has a place in modern Leuven is the De Lantaarn Cafe . The cafe arose as part of the boom around the Vaartkom in the 18th century, and after World War II, it became synonymous with the Stella Artois brand.

History of Stella Artois

Stella Artois Brewery Leuven

Even though the name “Stella Artois” is globally well-known, it’s only been used for the last century of this centuries-old history.

The origins of Stella Artois begin just along the Vaart from the modern Stella Artois brewery at the Brewery Den Hoorn . Established in 1366, Brewery Den Hoorn became a major Leuven institution, gradually becoming the biggest business in the city.

It wasn’t until 1708 that the Artois name came into play when Sebastien Artois became the brewery’s master brewer. He would actually buy the brewery in 1717, renaming it the Artois Brewery . The next big change to the brewery didn’t happen until 1928 and with it “Stella Artois”.

For the festive season, a special Christmas beer was brewed and given the name “Stella”. The success and popularity of this seasonal beer were so immense that it soon became available year-round which led to this name change. The original horn symbol can still be spotted as part of the Stella Artois emblem.

The Stella Brewery Tour

Stella Artois Leuven

After walking up to the Stella Artois Brewery, I arrived at the visitor centre, was given a high-visibility vest, and was ushered upstairs. Once we’d been given an introduction and safety briefing, we were on our way and started the tour.

We were led onto the brewery grounds proper and into a small theatre. Here, we learned about the history of Stella Artois and the brewing process. It was quite interesting to learn the role each of the ingredients played in the composition of the beer. This is even though this was not my first brewery tour, having visited the Pilsener Urquell Brewery in Pilsen, Czechia.

For those who don’t know the process of how beer is brewed, I’ll try to give you a brief overview. The four essential ingredients of beer are water, barley, hops and yeast, however, Stella also interestingly adds maize. The origin of the water, barley, maize and hops, and the strain of yeast gives each type of beer its unique taste.

Brewery Tour

The brewing process starts with the “ malting ” of the barley, by heating, drying and cracking it. After that is the “ mashing ” stage, where the malted barley is soaked in hot water to release its sugars. The mash is then drained, leaving behind a sugary liquid known as “ mort “.

Next, the mort is boiled while the hops are gradually added, balancing out the sweet flavour of the mort. All of this is done in rows of immense, shiny kettles. The last step in the brewing process is fermentation, caused by adding the yeast to the strained and cooled mort.

While Stella Artois is brewed in other countries for the international markets, if you drink Stella in Europe, it was likely brewed here in Leuven. We were able to see the kettles, before moving on to the bottling plant.

From the viewing platform above, you can look down into the automated bottling machines and watch the process take place. While Stella is brewed here, it’s mostly other brands that are bottled on-site, including Leffe .

Bottling Machine, Brewery Tour

The end of the tour rightly finishes with the opportunity to do some tasting of freshly and meticulously poured Stella Artois on tap.

There is actually a 9-step process required to ensure the perfect pour. They allow plenty of time for you to enjoy a drink or two, as well as take a look at the gift shop. Before returning to the visitors centre, they kindly handed out gift bags to everyone, including several drinks for you to try.

stella artois brewery visit in leuven, belgium

We walked into the brewery where we ended up in a small showing room where our guide told us a bit more about the beer’s history. It all started with Brewery Den Hoorn in 1366 in the city center of Leuven. Brewery Den Hoorn set the now-famous taste and quality of the Stella Artois beer on the map. In 1717, Sébastiaan Artois bought the brewery and changed its name to Artois Brewery followed by Stella Artois in 1928.

Fun Fact : The name Stella Artois came from a special Christmas beer they brewed for all the inhabitants of the city Leuven: Stella. Stella is Star in Latin and represents the Christmas star which you can also see in the logo. Stella became so popular that the brewery decided to produce the beer to be available all year-round. The brewery eventually changed its name to that beer.

After learning the beer’s history, we learned more about the brewing process of the beer itself. Just as most beers, you’ll need barley, yeast, hop, and water but Stella Artois also uses maize in its beer.

Would you like to make your own beer? First of all, you have to heat, dry, and crack the barley (also known as malting the barley), followed by soaking the malted barley in hot water. The residue is then being drained to get a liquid named Mort. We then boil the mort and add some hop into it. The last step in making beer is adding yeast to the mort. All of this is done in giant kettles that you can see during your tour.

After that, we went to the bottling station where we could see the beer being bottled.

The Stella Artois Brewery holds a special place in the heart of Brussels, and local writers and artists often draw inspiration from its history and significance in the city. One local writer, Sophie, describes the brewery as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship and tradition. She says that the sight of the old brewery buildings and the smell of brewing hops evoke a sense of nostalgia and pride in her Belgian heritage. Sophie often includes references to Stella Artois in her poetry and essays, using it as a metaphor for the enduring spirit of Brussels. An artist named Pierre finds inspiration in the architectural beauty of the brewery, with its distinctive red brick buildings and soaring chimneys. He often sketches the brewery from different angles, capturing its grandeur and history on paper. Pierre appreciates the contrast between the industrial nature of the brewery and the surrounding green spaces, creating a unique visual juxtaposition in his artwork. Both Sophie and Pierre agree that the Stella Artois Brewery is an integral part of Brussels’ cultural identity. They believe that its continued operation and presence in the city serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving traditions and celebrating local heritage. Sean Evans and First We Feast’s Hot Ones partnered with Stella Artois to host the largest Hot Ones ... [+] in-person challenge ever

Wednesday night last week was a memorable evening for Hot Ones host Sean Evans. After 300 episodes of the YouTube phenomenon, the 38-year-old Chicago area native returned home to put on the largest Hot Ones in-person challenge ever with the help of Stella Artois.

Evans’ homecoming was a triumphant one. The host recently cemented his place among the country’s most revered interviewers and brought his series to the same table as the nation’s most iconic and timeless late-night talk shows after receiving new Emmy consideration and having an awe-inspiring interview with Conan O’Brien.

Diving into Broadcast Journalism at the University of Illinois, being a tour guide on Chicago’s architecture cruise, and piecing work together as a freelance writer and editor gave Evans the experience and tools he needed to become the unique pop culture force he is today.

“All of those things, even... Earlier today, like when I was in college, I was a tour guide of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan and we took the whole team on a cruise today, saw a lot of old faces,” Sean told me of his journey that came full-circle in the Windy City last week. “I think about even the way that shaped me into the kind of performance persona that I had to develop doing a show like this or in broadcast journalism, all of that training, going through the mud of the media industry, trying to freelance and make it all work.”

“There's that Steve Jobs quote about not being able to connect the dots looking forward, only looking back, and I think all of those things just worked in concert with one other and then even for a show like this to blast through the concrete it had to be at the right time and the right place and the sort of YouTube revolution. There's all these things that when you look back on it, it's an absolute miracle that I'm here now.”

Stella Artois, David Beckham, Sean Evans and First We Feast’s Hot Ones partnered to host the largest ... [+] Hot Ones in-person challenge ever

Three hundred guests tried their hand at the 10 “Wings of Death” and viewed clips from the new Hot Ones episode starring David Beckham a day early at Chicago’s Moonlight Studios in conjunction with Stella’s “ Let’s do Dinner Summer Series ”, which offers one-of-a-kind crossovers that fuse together iconic food, lifestyle, music and entertainment platforms through a series of exclusive events across the country.

After taking in the sneak peak of the Beckham episode and attempting to take in the 10 wings, fans got to see Evans do a candid and fun Q&A with the famed soccer star focused on his Hot Ones episode and his career. The night finished with a surprise performance from rapper Ludacris.

“It's very special,” Evans stated ahead of the event. “It's a manifestation of this amazing partnership that we've had with Stella Artois, which has been awesome. And this is why an event like this, coming back to my hometown, doing this live event, 300 people in here eating the wings together, having David Beckham onstage, I've got dozens of friends and family coming in. So, It's the manifestation of this partnership and it's been really awesome, very rewarding and fulfilling.”

Sean’s partnership with Stella Artois includes a string of the “Let’s do Dinner” events at select US cities over the summer and concluding with one in New York on Sep. 19.

“I think it's just a natural coalescing of brands, both at the center of pop culture. I think it's natural that it came together,” Evans said. “It also does happen to be my favorite beer, so it's poetic when it happens that way.

“Then when you think about the things that we've done together, the ‘Let's do Dinner’ events, the campaigns, an interview with David Beckham, one previously with Ludacris. An event like this, if they were all this way, it'd be nice.”

As popular as Hot Ones has been since its first season kicked off on YouTube in March of 2015, Conan O’Brien’s episode in season 23’s finale back in April scorched the Earth more than the show’s famed hot sauce “Da Bomb”.

O’Brien’s responses to Sean’s questions ranged from candid and heartfelt to hilarious. He provided safe levity by putting chicken wings in his pockets and bringing his own questionable, but lovable physician, Dr. Arroyo (played by longtime Conan writer Jose Arroyo).

Things took a turn and began to escalate when the legendary host and comedy writer began to verbally mock the sauces and licked one off a wing. Conan later poured some of one of the hottest sauces on his hands and rubbed a bit of it on his face. He even drank a portion of another ultra-spiced sauce from the bottle toward the conclusion of the show.

The conversation and theatrics served not only as one of the best interviews seen or heard anywhere in the last few decades, but one of the greatest spectacles in entertainment during that span. Evans was masterful in giving Conan the time and space to be Conan.

“I was just entranced by the spectacle of it all from across the table,” Sean said of O’Brien’s commitment to the interview. “But also, loved seeing Conan like that. I grew up on him and to me, that was like a vintage side of Conan that he doesn't have all the opportunities to bring to people, [like] he did when he had his talk show.

“He kind of left his podcast studio and then planted his flag on the Hot Ones episode to let everyone know that he still has his fastball. So a moment like that, you maybe just let the greatest showman of my generation... you just take a step back and let Conan do the Conan thing. We've done 300 episodes and it's one of my favorites, if not my favorite.”

Hot Ones ’ format gives celebrity guests like Conan ample opportunity to shine. Sean provides his interview subjects plenty of time to both respond to each of his questions and react to each of the wings, both of which have high potentials for payoff.

WATCH WHAT HAPPENS LIVE WITH ANDY COHEN — Episode 21138 — Pictured: Sean Evans — (Photo by: Charles ... [+] Sykes/Bravo via Getty Images)

“I think ultimately, the show is just a blank canvas for people, and that's why you see so many different things,” Evans stated. “Whether it's Gordon Ramsey bringing in a whole Mary Poppins bag of spice anecdotes or someone like Conan, who not only had the gag where this madman high on hot sauce ratchets up the tension with every wing but you also have Dr. Arroyo coming in between wings just to check his vitals, you also had him putting wings in his pocket.

“I think of David Blaine doing this crazy Carolina Reaper magic trick on Wing 10. Ultimately, I think that's the beauty of it being so stripped down and just being black curtains and the table, just a generic bald guy and his hot sauces and his wings.

“You can paint that picture however you want. I think that that's what makes it fresh for the audience because as much as the show has stayed the same over the years, the watch experience is always different because it serves as an extension of the guest's personality. I think that the Conan episode really epitomizes that.”

Hot Ones received legitimate recognition from a traditional show business standpoint when Evans was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for hosting the series in 2021 and when Hot Ones was nominated for outstanding talk show entertainment in 2022. This year, after a successful petition, Hot Ones was included in the outstanding talk series category and eligible for a Primetime Emmy nomination alongside late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert.

The series didn’t receive a 2024 Primetime Emmy nomination, but to be in consideration among such institutions is a testament to everything Sean and his Hot Ones team, including show creator Chris Schonberger, have achieved.

“It's something that has been kind of a crystalized goal of ours for a long time, but it's not like I woke up this year and thought that it was even possible,” Sean said. “It's not like an Emmy nomination was even a dream I had in January for example.

“So when something like that happens, that's exactly what I think it is, a sign of the times and the flattening landscape of media and how YouTube is a streamer like Netflix is a streamer, Amazon's a streamer, or Apple's a streamer, Hulu... When you look at the place that a show like Hot Ones lives in culture, I think it's categorically worthy of comparison with those other late-night shows. I think it was just the [Emmy’s] catching up with the times but I also think that we were there to meet that moment.”

Seemingly as meaningful to Evans as the Emmy talk, and perhaps more so, is the way his alma mater has paid tribute to his groundbreaking success at sporting events and his old college watering hole.

“I went back to U of I a couple years ago to be honored at a football game, which was so amazing. It was such a full-circle moment to go back KAMS and see that there's a mural on the back wall with me painted into KAMS,” Sean recalled. “I was a KAMS guy, big on the sports at the time.

“It was at the time where you had that Rose Bowl team with (Isiah) ‘Juice’ Williams, Rashard Mendenhall, Vontae Davis, I remember that. I remember those moments. Going to basketball games, even this year, going to the Elite 8. I still try to stay around, I haven't changed that much from college.”

Prior to Chicago, Stella Artois’ “Let’s do Dinner Summer Series” made stops in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Fans can enter to win a spot at the Sept. 19 event in New York City, which also features Evans, by entering Stella’s “Let’s do Dinner Summer Series” sweepstakes.
