Jon Bernthal Picks Up First Emmy Award Win

Is bluey a boy or a girl, 10 best sitcom seasons with 100% on rotten tomatoes.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Episode 8, "Surrender," now streaming on Paramount+.

When Star Trek: Picard introduced Jack Crusher , fans immediately expected he was Jean-Luc and Beverly's son. However, with his disturbing visions, weird alien powers and red eyes, he's definitely something more. However, fans may find Jack's affliction similar to the effects of Deep Space Nine 's Pah-Wraiths.

The showrunner and several writers for Picard all worked together on another sci-fi tv series, 12 Monkeys . Those who've seen that series know that visions tinged with red are a big part of the show's mythology. It's possible that Terry Matalas and company just think freaky visions of reddish plant life, houses and doors are cool. Even if that's the case, these artists are such meticulous Trek obsessives, they may have known they had an alien species that delivered all that visually excellent stuff. It's clear Jack is connected to the Changelings in some way. Perhaps the mysterious face Vadic gets her orders from is some species inhabited by a Pah-Wraith still loose in the galaxy. They weren't connected to the Changelings, at least not directly. However, they could've found common cause, uniting two of the big antagonists of that show.

What Are the Pah-Wraiths and How Are They Connected to Deep Space Nine?

The Pah-Wraiths are part of the Bajoran culture story, an alien race created for Deep Space Nine . Like the Vulcans, the Bajorans are a spiritual people and have prophets who have strange, mystical powers. Described as ancient, incorporeal beings, they used to live in symbiosis with the prophets. The two groups had a falling out, and the Pah-Wraiths were imprisoned in the Fire Caves. Deanna Troi described the "presence" on the USS Titan-A as dark and malevolent. This is also how the Pah-Wraiths were described. Finally, the Pah-Wraiths could possess people, surviving in their bodies, and it made their eyes turn red.

A few times on Picard , Vadic implied that whatever is going on with Jack Crusher involves something "ancient" and that there is a "clock" running out of time. Jack clearly has visions and hears voices, things that both the Bajoran Prophets and the Pah-Wraiths could do. Dukat or others possessed by them couldn't control the minds of others, but they did have abilities like telekinesis and energy powers. The Pah-Wraiths, when not portrayed as wisps of light, gave off an authoritarian demeanor. Even with most of them imprisoned, those that exist in the galaxy think of themselves as superior to corporeal species.

The Changelings were at the top of the alien hierarchy in the Dominion War, called the "Founders" by the other races. Vadic's Starfleet-created Changelings are distinct from the Great Link, but still, they should command fear and respect. However, Vadic isn't only afraid of her "client," he forced her form to ripple and, seemingly, char. Only one detail works against this Picard theory that Jack Crusher is part Pah-Wraith. They could move about freely after possession, whereas whatever is inside Jack (and Jean-Luc's biological body) is more corporeal.

Why Would a DS9 Species Like Pah-Wraiths Show Up on Picard?

Other than former crew members Worf and O'Brien serving aboard the station, there is no connection between Deep Space Nine and Jean-Luc Picard. However, of all the second-wave Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine has the most dangling story threads. Viewers have no idea if Captain Sisko is alive or dead. He was last seen diving into the Fire Caves to keep the evil Pah-Wraiths imprisoned. He had an experience with the Prophets, the sound of a slowing heartbeat in the background of the scene. Later a vision of him (or a prophet disguised as him) told Sisko's wife Kasidy Yates that the prophets "still had a great deal" for him to do.

Before the modern era of Star Trek tried to reimagine what these shows could be, Deep Space Nine was the series that "missed the point" of Gene Roddenberry's utopian vision of the future. It was because DS9 seemed so "grown up" with the types of stories it told, everyone just knew they were going to get a movie like the cast of TNG did. Alas, the failure of Star Trek: Nemesis stopped those plans, if they ever existed at all. Picard is the final voyage for The Next Generation crew, but it can also wrap up stories from Voyager and DS9 as well.

If Jack is connected to the Pah-Wraiths or a similar species, it will not be just another Star Trek Easter egg on the show. The storytellers will take that bit of canon and mold it to fit perfectly in the poignant story they're telling about legacy. Who knows? Picard, the man who almost killed Benjamin Sisko, might be the one to pull him out of limbo, with a little help from the "next generation."

Actor and singer James Darren , whose long showbiz career included memorable roles on T.J. Hooker and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , has died at the age of 88, our sister site Variety reports.

He passed away on Monday at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, with his son Jim Moret saying of Darren: “He was a good man. He was very talented. He was forever young.”

Heather Locklear, who co-starred with Darren on T.J. Hooker , posted a tribute following his death: “One of my favorite people. We would always laugh so hard together. Rest in peace my dear friend.”

In 1996, Darren debuted as holographic lounge singer Vic Fontaine on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , providing Rat Pack-style entertainment in the holosuites of Quark’s bar. The character of Vic Fontaine became a fan favorite, with Darren appearing in a total of eight episodes, including the 1999 series finale.

I’ll always remember him as Moondoggie. Rest in peace.

Very sad news. James Darren was a class act; I remember him from Deep Space Nine. He was fantastic as Vic Fontaine. Although he was only in 8 episodes he created a very memorable character. My condolences to his family & friends.

His performance of “The Way You Look Tonight”, surrounded by the cast and crew (as extras in the scene) was one of the best TV series finale moments for me, because it captured that moment so perfectly. 25 years later, we are at that “someday” and it still gets me. Might be worth linking to, TV Line.

I rember watching the Gidget movies in the 60s when I was around 8 or 9. I thought he was such a handsome man even when I was that young! It is a shame that we are losing all of the true Hollywood bests at an alarming rate. My condolences go out to all of his family and friends.

James Darren is officially now inside the Time Tunnel along the infinite corridors of time…

‘for all we know doug and tony could be dead…’

that line always turned up in an episode

Yes!!! I just bought the series on Prime… lots of it is a lot cheesier than I remember (I was a little kid when it was on), but they were both fantastic in it!!

Rest in Peace Moondoggie!!

He did the Deep Space Nine episodes near the end of his acting keeping it cool.

Fell in love with Moondoggie in the 70s when WJLA in DC used to do the theme week movies at 430pm. I watch his son, Jim Moret on Inside Edition. Condolences to his family.

R.I.P. JAMES DARREN Very handsome, handsome, handsome. Condolences to his family. You will be missed.

RIP Moondoggie. You were a good one.

Always thought he was one of the best looking guys on tv. Enjoyed him on Hooker. RIP.

RIP.I watched him on “TJ Hooker”. Unfortunately, “Time Tunnel” was before my time.

You can catch it on Saturday nights on ME-TV if you have that channel.

He was a legend! Absolutely loved him in everything he did. Favorite Vic Fontaine line has to be “Sometimes being a hologram can be a real pain in the asymmetric photons”.

There’s my Guns of Navarone tribute.

I enjoyed working with him. In person he was a fine actor with a great sense of humor. Farewell VIC FONTAINE.

Computer, End Program.

RIP Mr. Darren. May you and Aron Eisenberg, in whatever afterlife there is, reunite and carry Vic and Nog into eternity.

I love the old [pre- Quantum Leap] Time Tunnel series.

You left out that he had five Top 40 hit records in the 1960s, including two that made the Top 10 — “Goodbye Cruel World” which reached No. 3 in 1961 and “Her Royal Majesty” which peaked at No. 6 in 1962.

History [ ]

As a child, per her parents' wishes, Sarina underwent an illegal procedure called accelerated critical neural pathway formation , which dramatically increased her intelligence beyond what Humans would call genius level. Unfortunately, though her cerebral cortex was enhanced to process information faster, it couldn't initially get that information from her visual and auditory systems fast enough, and Sarina was unable to focus on her world. Outwardly, this made her appear mute and oblivious to her surroundings.

In 2360 , Douglas was introduced to other genetically-engineered Humans Jack , Patrick and Lauren at a Federation Institute for special needs individuals unable to function in normal society. She would spend fifteen years with them. During this time, a Doctor Karen Loews was assigned to her and the others in the group. She separated Douglas and her group from the others in order to treat them differently. Loews also became Douglas' legal guardian . ( DS9 : " Statistical Probabilities ", " Chrysalis ")

In 2374 , Douglas and the others were brought by Loews to Deep Space 9 to be placed under the study of Doctor Julian Bashir , who himself was genetically-enhanced, for three weeks. At first, the savants proved to be helpful to the Federation . They pointed out that Weyoun was willing to cede extra territory in order to gain a planet where ketracel-white for the Jem'Hadar could be produced. As Sarina was mute at the time, she managed to convey said information to Doctor Bashir by sketching a chemical diagram on a PADD .

Later on, however, the savants calculated that the Federation could not defeat the Dominion and should surrender before there was an appalling loss of life. When Captain Sisko refused to consider their proposal, the savants decided the best way to prevent mounting casualties was to contact the Dominion and give them information that would allow them to take over the Alpha Quadrant with little loss of life. When Bashir tried to stop them, they rendered him unconscious, tied him up, and left Sarina to guard him. But Bashir was able to get through to Sarina and convince her to release him, and he was able to stop the savants from carrying out their plan. The savants left Deep Space 9 soon after. ( DS9 : " Statistical Probabilities ")

In 2375 , Jack got word that Bashir wanted to try to treat Douglas using a procedure to allow her brain to gather information from her senses, which would allow her to live a normal life. He led the group to bring her to Bashir on Deep Space 9, posing as officers. Using a neurocortical probe , refined by Jack and Patrick, Bashir was successful in stimulating the growth of the synapses in her brain, allowing her to interact with people for the first time in her life.

Douglas was beyond thankful for Bashir's actions, and took delight in interacting with her surroundings. With the help of her friends, she was able to quickly re-learn how to speak, and sing. She had a bit of awkwardness fitting back in with her friends in subsequent conversations, but they were still family to her. She helped Bashir with a research problem he'd been working on, and played dabo with her skills in probability theory. She and Bashir became very close, and, indeed, fell in love. The quickness of it however nearly drove her back into seclusion when she didn't know how to respond to his advances. Ultimately, she left Deep Space 9 to pursue an internship Bashir arranged for her at the Corgal Research Center . ( DS9 : " Chrysalis ")

Memorable quotes [ ]

" Hello, Sarina. " " What is he talking to her for? He read the reports. She won't answer. Didn't you read the reports? "

" Hello, Sarina. Remember me? " " Of course she remembers you. She's not an idiot. " " She's just a little cataleptic. " " Are you really going to be able to make her better? " " I'm going to do everything I can. I promise. "

" Sarina? What are you looking at? " " Everything. You heard me. I thought something and you heard it. " " Sarina, you spoke. "

" I was listening when you were telling the nurses about the procedure. I kept thinking that I wanted to thank you for what you were trying to do for me, and now I finally can. Thank you. "

"If I had to find someone to replace Atlas and hold up the world, it be Miles."

" Hello, everyone. " " Did you hear what she said? Did you hear that? " " I don't think I've heard a more beautiful sound in my life. "

Background information [ ]

Sarina was played by actress Faith C. Salie .

The final script for "Statistical Probabilities" gives the pronunciation of Sarina's name as "suh-REE-nuh" and goes on to describe her as being as " white as a ghost. " [1]

Salie commented: " the most iconic show I've ever been on was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . I still get fan mail. I'm on a trading card. My character lives on in a DS9 novel ". [2]

Sarina Douglas costume - It's a Wrap

Two of the costumes worn by Salie in her appearances as Sarina were later sold off in the It's A Wrap! sale and auction . The first, a short-sleeved dress featuring multi-colored, thin, vertical stripes was sold for US$168.50, [3] (X) while her second costume, a long-sleeved shirt in a light green and black with matching trousers and light green socks, was sold for US$167.50. [4] (X)

First appearance [ ]

Salie found her first appearance bittersweet, as at the time she was cast as Sarina her mother was dying: " So when I was back in LA to film it, I was thrilled. It was the biggest part I had gotten since I had moved to LA after grad school. But it was a chunk of time I was away from her while she was dying. She was so happy because Deep Space Nine was a very well-received television show. It was the first time I learned what single card meant. My agent was very proud to tell me that he got me single card credit, so it’s only my name on screen. And because my mom was dying and I hoped she would see this episode, I put my middle initial [C]—as my credit. My middle initial is her maiden name. And it aired a month after she died. I was so sad that she never got to see it. She did die happy. Her two older sons were married or as good as married, like my brother and his partner at the time. I didn't have anybody. I had just moved to LA. I know it made her very happy to think that, 'Oh, my daughter's career has launched with this role'." [5]

The characters of Jack, Patrick, Lauren, and Sarina were collectively referred to as the "Jack-pack" by the Deep Space Nine writing team, with each character having a specific personality trait. Sarina was described as the " astrophysicist who couldn't talk " and was a holdover from an original story idea for " Statistical Probabilities " called "Think Tank" and involved Starfleet sending the group, including Sarina, to Deep Space 9 as a think tank on the Dominion War. ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 513)

Originally, Sarina was to have spoken in "Statistical Probabilities", but the lines spoken by actress Salie ultimately ended being cut from the finished episode. " When I auditioned for the part, I had four lines of dialogue in the pivotal scene where I decide to untie Bashir. " Salie recalled. " And, in fact, that's the way we filmed it. So it was much to my surprise when I sat down with my family at Thanksgiving to watch it and discovered I'd turned into a mute. " As René Echevarria explained, " The episode was long, so we were looking for cuts. And it just played better when Bashir made his case to this woman and you didn't know what she would do until the next scene, when you discovered Bashir had been freed. So we cut Sarina's dialogue in the editing room. I remember thinking, 'Oh God, this poor woman. She's probably told everybody she knows about this scene.' " ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 514)

Salie only found out that her lines had been cut when she watched the episode with her family: " And then it comes [on] November 24, 1997. It was Thanksgiving night. My mom has been dead for a month. My brothers and my father and their spouses and I are all in Florida at my dad's house. It gets to that scene and I'm just like, 'This is where my lines are and then they cut them! Whaaattt!' Of course, if you had told me that night, 'Look, in a year you're going to have a whole episode about you and an aria' I would have been a little less disappointed, but I was kind of flabbergasted ". [6]

One of the reasons the cut worked well was because Salie had been directed to behave as if Sarina couldn't speak. " I was told to behave pretty much catatonic, " she recalled. " Anson [Williams] told me 'There's a lot going on in your mind, because you're genetically enhanced and you're brilliant, but you can't facilitate it because your body doesn't know how.' I don't want to make it seem like some terribly difficult actor's moment, but I did work on it. I created a switch in my brain that I could turn on and off to make everything become hazy around me, so that it seemed as if an amalgam of voices and senses were coming at me and that it was overwhelming. Of course, sometimes it was as simple as trying not to blink! In most of my scenes, I kept myself busy by focusing on the wall and touching it. Michael Keenan kept making jokes about me playing the wall. He said, 'I'm so glad those wall lessons your parents gave you paid off.' " ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 514)

Second appearance [ ]

As it turned out, the idea not to let Sarina speak in the episode, provided the inspiration for her next appearance in " Chrysalis ". However, because the role was to become dialogue heavy, the producers were concerned that Salie might not be up to it. " I had to go through a few hoops. " Salie remembered. " Before offering it to me, they auditioned me. But to be fair to them, they didn't call in anyone else. " Echevarria commented, " We certainly didn't want to recast, but we did bring Faith in to read. It must have been incredibly stressful for her. She had a role that was hers to lose . But within seconds of her reading, we knew she was in. " Similarly, Ira Steven Behr said, " We suspected that Faith would be fine. I'd seen her do some children's theater, and I knew she was a very intelligent woman. " ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 614)

Although the character had appeared before, the writers had never developed a specific personality for her. " They explained to me that she should have no subtext, " Salie explained. " which is a very unusual feature for a character. As an actor, you're taught to dig, dig, dig to find out what's underneath the lines and to know the backstory, because often a character might be saying something that she really doesn't mean. But with Sarina, there was none of that. She was guileless. She hadn't been around enough to learn about disingenuousness or even flitation. The undercurrent in almost every scene in film or television between a man and a woman is one of some sort of flirtation or sexual attraction. But I was told specifically to take that out of my scenes with Bashir. In no way was I supposed to relate to him flirtatiously, It sounds like a simple task - 'Just say the line and mean it' - but that was hard to play, because we're never trained to take lines at face value. " ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 614)

The scene in which Sarina is introduced to the station's Promenade was much easier for Salie. " The word used in the script's stage direction was 'astonished'. Well, the way the soundstage was set up, that wasn't hard to play! The Promenade set just bombards you with colors and flags, and I was surrounded by aliens. And, it's always very exciting to have the camera right in your face. I'm not over that yet. " Director Jonathan West helped Salie for the scene by comparing the moment to that of a well-known film. " Jonathan called that shot the 'Maria moment'. " Salie remembered. " The camera was going to zoom down on my face when my mouth was wide open. Jonathan said, 'Just think about Maria on top of the mountain in The Sound of Music , twirling around and around. " ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 614)

The musical sequence in "Chrysalis" was developed by Rene Echevarria when it struck him that Sarina might have difficulties vocalizing. " That's why I thought they should start singing, " he recalled. " Now the scene establishes the vocal problem, gets away from it, and shows everybody's joy. And most importantly, we fall in love with Sarina and we certainly see Julian falling in love with her. I was just delighted with the scene in the script but Ira [Steven Behr] was skeptical. " Initially, the producers were worried about Salie's ability to pull the singing off, but she turned out to be the most proficient vocalist. " As soon as I read about the singing in the script I was so excited. " Salie enthused. " Because I'm musically trained. I don't think any of the other actors enjoyed doing it as much as I did. " ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , pp. 614-615)

In his review of " Chrysalis ", Star Trek author Keith R.A. DeCandido wrote, " It's actually fun to see the Jack Pack again, all four actors do superbly, especially Faith Salie, who had a much bigger role to play this time as Sarina. Salie is radiant and wonderful, and really sells Sarina's transition. " [7] Similarly, authors Mark Jones and Lance Parkin wrote, " Salie turns a pretty unpromising story into something with a little more depth. " ( Beyond the Final Frontier , p. 259)

Sarina Douglas - CCG

Sarina, as she appears in the Star Trek Customizable Card Game

Sarina has appeared in eight novels. In the Typhon Pact novel Zero Sum Game , at some point prior to 2382 Sarina is contacted by Section 31 operative L'Haan and recruited into the agency as an operative. During August 2382, Sarina and Julian Bashir are assigned a mission to Salavat to investigate intelligence reports suggesting that the Typhon Pact is constructing a quantum slipstream drive-powered vessel at a facility in that system. During the mission, Sarina is captured and interrogated by the Breen, but is able to escape and make the rendezvous with the USS Aventine . During the mission Sarina and Bashir reunite and start a romantic relationship. Nevertheless, it is later revealed that Sarina has accepted an assignment within Section 31 and is tasked with recruiting Bashir into the agency by her handler, L'Haan. Following this, as told in Plagues of Night and Raise the Dawn , Douglas later requests a transfer to Deep Space 9 and is assigned to the security team under Jefferson Blackmer, holding rank of lieutenant. After surviving the destruction of the station, she is promoted to lieutenant commander and assigned first to Bajoran Space Central and later to the new station. Sarina reveals to Ro Laren that she is working against Section 31 from within. Bashir and Sarina continue their quest to destroy Section 31. Disavowed reveals Sarina moves to Andoria to live with Bashir, accepting a position with the Federation Security Agency, however this is a cover for her actual position as a member of Starfleet Intelligence. She and other members of Starfleet intelligence work to insert Bashir into Section 31 while the organization is still interested in him. Cole recruits Bashir and Douglas for a mission to the mirror universe. Ultimately, in Control , they discover that Section 31 is being run by an artificial intelligence called Uraei, also known as "Control", which had its origins in the 22nd century . With Data 's help, a computer virus is created to eliminate Uraei, but Sarina is brainwashed by Section 31 and made to fight Bashir as he attempts to install the virus. Bashir succeeds, but is severely wounded, and Sarina is made to commit suicide by Control. Section 31 is exposed to the public and dismantled but unknown to anyone, the Control persona survives independently of Uraei and goes into hiding.

Sarina Douglas is also referenced in a number of non-canon works. In the Prophecy and Change short story "The Devil You Know", when Jadzia Dax informs Julian Bashir of her research into modifying the Jem'Hadar, Bashir tells her for every Julian Bashir there is a Jack, a Patrick, a Sarina, and a Khan Singh . In the Mission Gamma novel Cathedral Bashir has a vision of Sarina while affected by the Cathedral artifact in 2376. In the Section 31 novel Abyss , it is mentioned that Cole is aware of Douglas, and Bashir's involvement with her.

An alternate Sarina appears in the Myriad Universes short story " Seeds of Dissent ". In that timeline, Khan Noonien Singh has won the Eugenics Wars and Humanity underwent genetic engineering en masse. Doctor Sarina Douglas is an Augment serving aboard the Earthfleet warship Defiance , under the command of Princeps Bashir, in 2376. When Constantin Amoros leaves the ship as part of the boarding party to the SS Botany Bay , Douglas is the senior medical officer on board. She informs Bashir of the conditions of those who are in suspension aboard the Botany Bay and that they are "Basics" – Humans without genetic enhancements.

Sarina is also featured in the Star Trek Customizable Card Game , which describes her as a "Cataleptic Conundrum".

In Saturn's Children , Sarina's mirror universe counterpart ( β ) is depicted as being a member of the Terran Rebellion .

FIRST LOOKS/TRAILERS

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Ryan Murphy’s true crime anthology series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” which will be available to stream on Sept. 19.

“Following the massive success of ‘Dahmer,’ Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true-crime anthology series returns with ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,’ chronicling the case of the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menendez,” reads the show’s log line.

It continues: “While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed – and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole – that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.”

Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, David McMillan, Louise Shore, Carl Franklin, Javier Bardem, Paris Barclay, Michael Uppendahl and Max Winkler all serve as executive producers.

Paramount+ unveiled the trailer for the second season of “Colin From Accounts,” which will premiere on the streamer on Sept. 26.

All eight episodes of the new season will be available to stream at launch. Series creators Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer have returned to write, executive produce and star in the series that has already been feted with two Gotham TV Awards and has maintained a 100% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“‘Colin From Accounts’ is a romantic comedy about flawed, funny people choosing each other and embracing the all-too-relatable chaos of modern life. After Gordon (Brammall) and Ashley (Dyer) are brought together in season one by a spontaneous nipple flash and the subsequent accident that injured the titular (no pun intended) dog, season two of the hit series opens with Ash and Gordon now living together and trying to get their beloved, special needs dog, Colin, back from his new owners,” reads the series’ log line.

It continues: “It’s the first in a series of hurdles for the new couple as they find out more about each other, for better and worse.”

PROGRAMMING

FOX has announced plans to produce an all-new-two-hour special in which a group of male celebrities will volunteer to bare all to raise awareness for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer testing and research.

The special is titled “The Full Monty” and is inspired by the award-winning 1997 film of the same name, which sees a group of men form a male strip-tease act to raise a quick buck.

Emmy-and Golden Globe-nominated actor, comedian and producer Anthony Anderson (“We Are Family,” “75th Emmy Awards,” “Black-ish”) will rally a cast of male celebrities, including himself, Taye Diggs (“All American,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”), Chris Jones (3x Super Bowl Champion, Kansas City Chiefs), Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”), Bruno Tonioli (“Dancing with the Stars”) and James Van Der Beek (“Dawson’s Creek,” “Varsity Blues”) to encourage men to get checked and strip the stigma around prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer.

During the two-hour special, Anderson will lead Diggs, Jones, Posey, Tonioli and Van Der Beek as they train and rehearse for the most revealing performance of their careers, culminating with a big strip-tease dance, choreographed by Emmy Award-winner Mandy Moore (Choreographer for “So You Think you Can Dance,” “La La Land” and Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour”), where they will bare all in front of a live audience.

The special will air on FOX on Dec. 9 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Atsuko Okatsuka’s second stand-up comedy special will premiere on Hulu this November as part of the platform’s new stand-up comedy brand it has cheekily dubbed “Hularious.”

The special will be filmed at the Disney-owned El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on Nov. 9. The show is part of Okatsuka’s newly added Los Angeles date on her 2024 Full Grown Tour, which is produced by Live Nation.

Following her HBO special “The Intruder,” Okatsuka embarked on her tour with over 200 shows in 100+ cities, 20+ countries, four continents and over 100K tickets sold.

In addition to her stand-up career, she debuted two films at the Tribeca Film Festival: “All That We Love” by Yen Tan; and “Group Therapy,” directed by Neil Berkely and produced by Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions. She also wrapped the feature studio comedy “Outcome” for Apple, starring Jonah Hill and Keanu Reeves.

Hulu has yet to reveal the title of the special and its release date.

Jacoba Atlas’ documentary “The M Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause” premieres on PBS Oct. 17, followed by a 20-city U.S. screening tour.

Per the official logline, “‘The M Factor’ features renowned doctors, workplace advocates and leading advocates for women’s health addressing questions that have long plagued women. Women from all walks of life reveal the physical and mental anguish they live with every day. The film also sheds light on disparities faced by Black and Brown women as they assess their treatment options.”

“Every single woman will go through menopause,” said executive producers Denise Pines and Tamsen Fadal. “The neglect, ridicule, or shaming of debilitating symptoms is unacceptable and impacts more than just an individual woman’s well-being.“

“The M Factor” is produced by Women in the Room Productions and Take Flight Productions.

Fox has unveiled the guest stars for Season 2 of Dan Harmon’s mythological animated comedy “Krapopolis,” which premieres Sept. 29.

Guest stars making voice appearances in Season 2 include Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Alison Brie, Seth Rogen, Danny Pudi, Nick Kroll, Randall Park, Holmes, Sam Richardson, Paul Scheer, Brian Baumgartner, Dylan Gelula, Jason Mantzoukas, Ashley Park and Minnie Driver.

AWARD SHOWS

David E. Kelley, the writer and producer behind “Ally McBeal,” “L.A. Law” and “Big Little Lies,” will receive the 2024 International Emmy Founders Award at the 52nd International Emmy Awards Gala.

“Every generation has a favorite David E. Kelley show, and that’s because David Kelley has been turning out television hits since ‘L.A. Law’ forty years ago. He crafts memorable television for viewers across the globe,” Bruce L. Paisner, International Academy President & CEO, said in a statement.

“To be recognized by the International Academy in this way is truly overwhelming. This award stands as a testament to the incredible teams and individuals I have had the honor to collaborate with over the years,” Kelley said. “I am especially grateful for the many opportunities I’ve been given in being able to share stories and push boundaries of what television can be.”

The gala will take place on Nov. 25 in New York.

The Television Academy has revealed the first batch of presenters for night one of this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys. Names include LeVar Burton, Mark Cuban, Nikki Glaser, Derek Hough, Phil Keoghan, Lucy Liu, Jane Lynch, Victor Montalvo and Hannah Waddingham.

Strange New Worlds' Pike Is Trek's 12th Character To Repeat A Classic Line

2 modern star trek shows faced exactly the same criticism (but had opposite solutions), new starfleet tv show is the discovery replacement star trek desperately needs.

Jeri Ryan's Captain Seven of Nine needs to have an iconic Star Trek moment to follow in the footsteps of previous Captains of the Starship Enterprise . In the epilogue of Star Trek: Picard season 3, Seven of Nine became Captain of the USS Enterprise-G , itself formerly known as the USS Titan-A. Seven spent two years at the rank of Commander thanks to a field commission from Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), and served as the Titan-A's First Officer, under the command of Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick). Commander Seven attempts to resign from Starfleet following the Titan's harrowing fight against a new form of Borg but accepts Shaw's recommendation for promotion.

Star Trek: Picard season 3's epilogue neatly sets up Star Trek: Legacy , a potential sequel series featuring Jeri Ryan as Captain Seven of Nine. Other alumni from Picard season 3 that would also appear in Legacy include Michelle Hurd as Seven's First Officer (and on-again, off-again love interest) Commander Raffaela Musiker, Ed Speleers as Ensign Jack Crusher, and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Lieutenant Sidney La Forge. Although Star Trek: Legacy isn't included on the slate of upcoming Star Trek shows just yet, there's a particular role that Captain Seven of Nine needs to fulfill should Star Trek: Legacy hit our screens.

Captain Pike opens Strange New Worlds with the famous "Space, the final frontier..." speech, making him the latest Star Trek icon to say the lines.

Captain Seven Of Nine Needs To Give Star Trek’s Iconic “Space… The Final Frontier…” Speech

These are the voyages of the starship enterprise.

Captain Seven of Nine needs to give Star Trek 's iconic "Space, the final frontier..." speech. The iconic opening monologue is featured in three different Star Trek shows about the USS Enterprise , so it's become a tradition for the Enterprise Captain to open their Star Trek show with it. Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), and Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) all recited the familiar monologue over their show's opening credits. Should Star Trek: Legacy get made, Captain Seven of Nine needs to follow in their footsteps with her own version of Star Trek 's narrative introduction.

Opening Star Trek: Legacy with the traditional monologue would help cement Seven of Nine as Captain of the Enterprise . After Star Trek: The Next Generation included a slightly revised version of the opening monologue from Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager did away with opening speeches altogether. Star Trek: Enterprise 's lyrical theme song negated the need for a monologue, and instead made the famous speech unique to captains of ships named Enterprise by attributing the in-universe words to Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). Star Trek: Strange New Worlds confirmed the tradition with Captain Pike bringing "Space, the final frontier..." back at long last.

Captain Pike's version of the introduction in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds retains Kirk's description of the "five-year mission" from TOS , while also preserving Picard's more inclusive "where no one has gone before" from TNG .

When Will Star Trek Fans See Captain Seven Of Nine Again?

The fate of star trek: legacy remains in limbo.

It will probably be a long time before Star Trek fans see Captain Seven of Nine again. There are no current plans to make Star Trek: Legacy in any form. An ongoing USS Enterprise-G TV show was clearly set up in Star Trek: Picard , and showrunner Terry Matalas would still make Star Trek: Legacy even if it takes a while. Paramount's ongoing budgetary concerns, pending studio sale, and Legacy 's potential cast scattered to new projects mean it's more likely that Star Trek: Legacy might be a Paramount+ streaming movie , especially if Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek: Section 31 does well enough to warrant further ventures into a long-form format.

A series of streaming Star Trek movies starring Jeri Ryan as Captain Seven of Nine might just be the best option for Star Trek: Legacy at this point. With serialized movies, audiences could check in on the continuing mission of the USS Enterprise-G on a semi-regular basis , not unlike the serialized story told in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan through Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . Whatever format sees Captain Seven of Nine return to Star Trek , it'll be great to hear Jeri Ryan giving Star Trek 's iconic opening speech as the brand-new Captain of the USS Enterprise-G.

A 58-Year Trek Into The Stars

A retrospective on how generations of fans have found Star Trek.

Illustration of three VHS tapes stacked on top of each other - one with the Deep Space Nine episode 'Rejoined,' a Chicago Bulls game, and the Deep Space Nine episode 'Starship Down'

StarTrek.com

On November 4, 1995, my mother went into labor in between a Chicago Bulls game and the airing of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's 77th episode, " Starship Down ." Just a standard Trek adventure — the U.S.S. Defiant gets attacked by a Jem'Hadar ship and all the characters go through a variety of turmoils to try to survive. Solid enough premise, but if I had arrived just seven days earlier, I could've been born during the absolutely iconic " Rejoined ." Now, that would've been one hell of a way to enter the world.

Throughout my life, Star Trek has followed me every step of the way. I'd stumble into random episodes with my Trekkie father if I flopped down on the couch with him after school. Or, I'd rummage around my parents' closet and end up playing with a figurine Data in an interactive Enterprise shuttle — just like Polly Pockets, but with lasers. Even when I wasn't yet a Trekkie myself, Star Trek has always been there. But, Trek finally wormed its way into my heart when I was 13. On a boring summer day, I ended up in the basement looking for something to do.

Tasha Yar, Will Riker, Deanna Troi, and Data all stand on the transporter pad in 'Encounter at Farpoint, Part II'

"Encounter at Farpoint, Part II'

Normally I went for the bookshelves — that's where my mother hid her scandalous romance novels. But for some reason, be it the sun and moon sharing the sky that day or how I'd recently reorganized my room for maximum window-side stargazing, I found myself drawn to my father's ceiling-high collection of every single Star Trek: The Next Generation episode on VHS. Looking at the silver gloss on the box, decorated with stars and a cast of characters in cheesy '80s costume uniforms, I whimsically decided I was going to watch every single one.

First, I did the math. If I watched two episodes a day, I could finish the whole collection before school started. As a chronic overachiever, I found it very normal to think, why not have a several-months-long summer project? And so, that evening I began my Trek journey with " Encounter at Farpoint ."

For 89 days, I watched two episodes every 24 hours — entertainment during lazy lunches, as background noise for writing afternoons, or the impetus for the perfect late night ice cream sesh. And when it was rainy, I committed to my crew and my full day with the TNG cast, cuddled in my favorite blanket. A pre-streaming binge, one might say. And when there were no VHS tapes left to watch, I even snuck into my parents' room, took my dad's special DVD Borg collection — the first Star Trek: Fan Collective from 2006 — and enjoyed all 14 episodes across Enterprise , TNG, and Voyager .

VHS packshot of Star Trek: Fan Collective - Borg collection

But I didn't stop there. I watched DS9 and VOY as a teen. Caught myself up on The Original Series and ENT in college. Then, when I was an adult with adult money, I got myself a Paramount+ account and delighted in Discovery , Picard , Lower Decks , Prodigy , and Strange New Worlds every week they aired. Trek has become an integral part of my life. And I'm not the only one. Not even close.

For the past 58 years, the Star Trek franchise has become an unimaginable influence and inspiration across media and fandom culture. From The Animated Series to the Kelvinverse , fanfiction to cosplay, Star Trek has spent decades sneaking itself into people's consciousness in the strangest and most sentimental ways. While the show hasn't always been on the air , Star Trek and its fans have made their mark .

Star Trek actors with Gene Roddenberry and NASA administrators stand before a prototype of the space shuttle test vehicle Enterprise in 1976. NASA administrator James Fletcher speaks to DeForest Kelly while George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Leonard Nimoy, Gene Rodenberry and Walter Koenig take it all in. Star Trek fans had organized a letter-writing campaign to have this early space craft named after their favorite starship.

Star Trek cast, Gene Roddenberry, and NASA administrators stand before prototype of the Enterprise shuttle, named due to a fan letter-writing campaign, in 1976.

In 1966, Star Trek started as one man's hopeful vision of science fiction and adventure . A hard sell of a show that required multiple pilots to get off the ground, Star Trek wasn't a network darling. In fact, the only reason it lasted as long as it did was because of the extreme dedication from the fans. They even, when fearing its cancellation in 1967, wrote and sent NBC over 100,000 letters about the show . Despite Star Trek not being the most popular program during its original release, those early Trekkies were — and are — persistent crowdfunding kickstarters and dedicated convention goers and fanfiction writers. They are iconic, culturally significant, and have spent decades supporting their favorite franchise.

Let's talk about the modern era of Trek . While Trekkies can argue to their heart's content whether the Abrams films or Enterprise or Discovery were "good Trek," every single one of those movies and series helped bring Star Trek into the new millennia. Grew the fandom to be bigger and better than it already was. There are tens of thousands of new, young Trekkies who started with Into Darkness or Lower Decks and then went back to watch all the other series. Teens are on Tumblr talking about Spirk right now , just like the original fans were writing zines about "The Premise" in the 60s . Star Trek has managed to be a staple of the 60s, the 80s, the 90s, the 2000s, the 2010s, and the 2020s, capturing the hearts of both new and old fans on such a massive, multi-generational scale unlike most any other franchise before it.

And it's not just newbies, either. The spread of Star Trek shows throughout the decade — and especially the mass boom of Trek media this millennia — has sparked a Trek renaissance which has inspired older fans to return to the fandom of their youth. Sometimes it's a 60-year old superfan watching the latest episodes of Prodigy . Other times, all these new cockamamie shows send old Trekkies climbing down into their basements to grab their old tapes and watch their favorites from "the golden days." Whether you love it or hate it, modern Trek has been an inspiration to all.

Fittingly, just as science and technology define the Star Trek franchise, the evolution of the internet has grown the Star Trek community exponentially. Once, Trekkies had to stumble upon one another. Write letters to each other across the country. Coordinate for months to meet each other at Bjo Trimble's WorldCon Futuristic Fashion Show . Now, fans connect on Tumblr, Tiktok, Twitter, Reddit. There's Federation fanfiction writing groups on AO3 and Discord servers for gay Trekkies. This multi-generational saga of Trek has led to so many podcasts, video essays, fan sites, and communities all inspired by each person's unique Star Trek journey.

Alex Kurtzman, the creative lead and executive producer for all modern Star Trek series, has his own franchise-changing story with Trek . While he wasn't a Trekkie to begin with, working on 2009's Star Trek led him to doing tons of research on the franchise and becoming an avid fan. His work on the film franchise spurred him to work with Paramount to create six completely new Star Trek shows in eight years — doubling the amount Trek series that fans got for the first 40 years of the franchise's existence. And while he's had such a lasting impact on Trek , he's not the only big name who counts himself among Trekkies . Rihanna watched Trek with her dad. Tom Hanks ran home from school to watch new episodes of TOS. Robin Williams visited Star Trek sets (TOS and VOY) whenever he could and told Neelix actor Ethan Phillips that he was his favorite character. Nicholas Cage is an avid Final Frontier fan and refuses to contemplate starring in Star Wars because "I'm on the Enterprise . That's where I roll." No matter which Trek is your favorite, no matter how you express your love for the franchise, every piece of Trek media is somebody’s beginning to their Star Trek journey. But that journey isn't what brings us together. It's the fact we all ended up in the same place, loving this universe that Gene Roddenberry created.

Star Trek Has Always Been There for Fans | First Contact Day 2023

Star Trek having generations of shows for generations of fans — 13 series and 950 episodes over nearly six decades — has created a fantastic franchise with a Trek for every Trekkie. Picard for the broody drama crowd, Prodigy for the kids, Nemesis for the masochists and the Tom Hardy fans. I myself have found great joy and acceptance in episodes like " The Measure of a Man " and "Rejoined" and " I, Borg " — the exact right stories for a bisexual little kid who felt like an alien. Some people have newly created Strange New Worlds watch parties or religiously turn on the TOS movies every holiday with their families . There's a million ways to be a Star Trek fan and a million ways to find fans just like you. That's the real magic.

Star Trek has become a cultural touchstone. It's one of the longest running franchises. The Enterprise became the namesake for the first American space shuttle orbiter. It featured one of the first interracial on-screen kisses. It gave birth to fanfiction . But Star Trek 's willingness to feature vastly different characters and even very different tones of stories is what has created such a rich and expansive community around it. And with the upcoming, more teen-focused Starfleet Academy , the continuation of the nostalgic Strange New Worlds , and the grand finale of the comedic and beloved Lower Decks , there's so more opportunities than ever for Star Trek journeys to begin.
