Multiple Grammy Award winning country artist Ronnie Milsap (born January 16th, 1943), has had an incredible 40 number one country hits in his long career, becoming one of the most successful country artists of his generation.
Born in the rural Appalachian town of Robbinsville, North Carolina, US, Milsap suffered from a congenital disorder that meant he has been blind since birth. However, this did little to hold Milsap back, who had a successful career in academia before deciding to leave his studies in order to pursue a career in music. He released his first single in 1964, “Total Disaster,” and went on to release his eponymous debut album on Warner Bros. in 1971.
Milsap has since gone on to forge a remarkable career, gathering endless hits, including the gut-wrenching ballad “Smoky Mountain Rain” (1981), “Any Day Now” (1982) and “There’s No Getting’ Over Me” (1981). Between the 1970s and 1980s, he was rarely out of the top ten of the US country charts, gaining his last number one hit in 1989, with “A Woman in Love.”
In the 90s, Milsap’s popularity began to wane, yet he continued to record and release albums frequently, still finding large audiences attending his live performances. Milsap has also diversified his style in later years, incorporating gospel, R&B and blues into his recordings, such as in his all-gospel affair, “Then Sings My Soul” in 2009.
Milsap has received an incredible array of awards throughout his career, including six Grammy Awards, eight Country Music Association Awards and was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014. He has sold 35 million albums worldwide and is amongst the best selling country artists of all time.
Live reviews
I will be honest in my review for the show for Ronnie Milsap, and that is he didn't perform to the best of his abilities in last night show at all. I know he could have done better, if he wanted to, but for some reason didn't . I don't even remember what he opened the show with, because my mom and I were having an argument over the fact that I wanted to sing and dance in my seat, and my mom wouldn't let me do that much at least, because she said I was nothing but an embarrassment to her. I told her that she should go to a Mankato Symphony concert, which will be coming to Mankato to the Verizon Center tomorrow. She made me move down to the end of the aisle until some more people came, and then I was forced to sit with her. I then told her that she had to accept my having fun at the concert, she was quiet after that, thank goodness. I think the next one I go to . I will go to by myself, because I will then enjoy it better. As for the show itself, I would have to say , like I said Ronnie could have done better, because he did nothing to excite the crowd at all. He just sat at his piano like a bump on a log. He sang like he was sick. He had no energy at all, but what do you expect from a guy that is 75 years old, and is gaining weight, and been on the road for way too long. I think it is time that he gets off of the road, and spends time with his wife, Joyce.

American country singer, Ronnie Lee Milsap caught the attention of so many people. Part of the reason was because he was blind, but more importantly, it was because he crossed different genres, which was a little different when he first started making music. He was able to blend aspects of R&B with country and open up the appeal to “country music” to a wider range of people.
Front and center of the stage sitting at a beautiful piano, is Ronnie while behind and off to the sides his band takes the stage all at once. A guitarist, keyboardist, drummer, and bassist; however, it is just him and the piano that start off the show. As the song progresses, the band start to layer in their sounds, so that by the time Ronnie starts to sing, you have a full bodied sound, layered with so many different things. The complexity of his songs, and the visual of this complexity lend a special kind of experience. You never for a second pay attention to his blindness because you see the passion and emotion that drives him. You can see that the expression that he allows himself by sharing his music is all that he needs, and inspires you to no end.
Ronnie Milsap was undoubtedly one of the most popular country performers of the 70s and 80s having made the difficult crossover between country and pop with startling ease and staggering success. His influence and legacy is felt in the country scene in the modern day so therefore a demand remains to see the great man perform live.
There is a wide range of patrons gathered tonight as Milsap's music has the power to cross generations and is often passed down from parents. They cheer intently as Ronnie's band appears followed by the man himself. It must be a strange experience to have played so many times and hear the rapturous cheers from the crowd but to never see the scale of the venues Ronnie manages to fill. The blind performer endearingly informs the crowd he understands the magnitude of the show and thanks every audience member for attending tonight. The music is top quality, the performer is top class and the night gets top marks.
I was so honored and pleased to be at the Parker Playhouse on March 5th, 2015 to see Ronnie Milsap. He has been my all time favorite singer for over 30 years. I had hoped that one day I could actually see him live at a concert. I was so blessed when my daughter gave me tickets to see Ronnie Milsap. What an awesome concert!!!!!!!! Ronnie sang a lot of songs and I must say that honestly, his voice was just as beautiful as it was 30 years ago. If you have never seen him in person, you must go. That is one great singer who I wish would never retire. RONNIE MILSAP IS THE BEST!
OMG, the show amazing!!! A wonderful venue to go to, it was so nice, pretty and clean... Ronnie came out on the stage and he made every song he sang worth what we paid for!!! He sung a couple of songs that we had never heard before and some that I hadn't heard in a real long time but we loved every minute of it!Can't wait to see him again at Renfro Valley Entertainment Center on Saturday, August 12!!!I do wish they would bring him back to the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, TN again!
I have seen Ronnie in concert 6 times in 2 years and he is THE BEST!!!! He still has it!!!! Him and his voice are still going strong after all of these years!!!! Can't wait to see him again in November!!!
Bought these tickets for my dad for Christmas and Unfortunately, it was horrible and we left after 30 mins. At 74 Ronnie can not sing anymore. He almost sounds like he suffered a stoke at some point :-((

Kelly Clarkson Stuns and Keith Urban Surprises at Ronnie Milsap’s Final Concert
By Joseph Hudak
Joseph Hudak
Ronnie Milsap played what is being billed as his final Nashville concert on Tuesday night at Music City’s Bridgestone Arena. But before he took the stage, a parade of artists from all genres paid him tribute: Keith Urban , Ricky Skaggs , Elizabeth Cook, Los Lonely Boys, and, at the top of the show, Kelly Clarkson .
The pop superstar kicked off the night with a powerhouse rendition of “It Was Almost Like a Song,” the Hal David and Archie Jordan-written title track to his 1977 album. Backed by the house band Sixwire, Clarkson slowly built the song to a dazzling big-note finish. It wasn’t the first time that Clarkson has performed songs from Milsap’s career either. As part of her regular Kellyoke segment on her talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show , the vocalist sang “Smoky Mountain Rain,” “Lost in the Fifties Tonight,” and “I Wouldn’t Have Missed It for the World” — three of Milsap’s finest.

In 2014, Urban talked to Rolling Stone about the influence of more pop-influenced country music on his own sound. “I grew up playing contemporary country music, not traditional: Ronnie Milsap, Alabama’s songs, Glen Campbell,” he said. “And then the West Coast rock thing was a big influence: Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt.”
Milsap’s final Nashville show marks the end of a career that was unafraid to lean hard into pop music. In fact, some of Milsap’s biggest hits crossed over to the adult contemporary chart. “I didn’t just come into town and start having hit records. You’ve got to study the songs and see if it’s a song that you really want to do,” Milsap told Rolling Stone . “And I guess some of them crossed over. Sometimes that just happens.”

Ronnie Milsap Preps for Final Nashville Concert as Stars Share Memories of the Legendary Blind Pianist (Exclusive)
Ricky Skaggs remembers nearly running off the road when he looked over and saw Milsap driving his tour bus

At 80 years old, blind piano player and Country Music Hall of Famer Ronnie Milsap is gearing up for his final Nashville, Tennessee, concert following about six decades of music making.
The Tuesday concert is a tribute event featuring guest singers taking turns singing Milsap's hits.
Artists on the bill include Kelly Clarkson , Little Big Town , Parker McCollum, Justin Moore , Scotty McCreery , Tracy Lawrence, Randy Houser, Sara Evans , Lorrie Morgan, Trace Adkins, Ricky Skaggs, Steven Curtis Chapman and more.
For many of the artists, the concert is personal. Milsap knew Morgan's father, George Morgan; Milsap and Skaggs are longtime friends, and McCreery's earliest memories include Milsap's music. He said his mother is a huge Milsap fan, and he remembers the whole family riding around in the car singing "Smoky Mountain Rain."
McCreery remembers Milsap performed a show near his hometown in North Carolina and that he sat down at the piano and played his hits. McCreery also recalls a video screen behind Milsap that showed the singer's life story and the stories behind the songs.
"It was really an intimate kind of show," McCreery, 29, told PEOPLE. "That concert was a highlight for young Scotty, for sure."
McCreery believes Milsap has "a song for every moment in life" and loves the storytelling and expression the pianist uses in his music.
"You can just tell how much fun he's having singing the songs and how happy it makes him, and how happy it makes the fans listen to his music," McCreery said. "I just always find my way back to his music, even if it's been a while."
Milsap has accumulated more than 40 No. 1 songs throughout his career and bridged multiple genres, including country, rock, pop, funk and rhythm and blues. He was part of the country-pop movement in the late 1970s and early '80s with hits including "It Was Almost Like a Song," "Stranger in My House," "No Gettin' over Me" and "Smoky Mountain Rain."

Morgan's Milsap memories go back to her childhood, too, when she sat on the roof and listened to his music with her sister. He didn't play country then but reeled her in with his smooth voice and infectious melodies.
"Oh my God, I love him so much," Morgan, 64, told PEOPLE.
When she launched her country music career, she shared a stage with Milsap. She remembers concert organizers once asked her to close the show for Milsap instead of open it. She got mad and swore that out of respect, she'd never close a show for Milsap. Then, he came to talk to her.
"He will always be better than me, and I refuse to do it," she said. "Ronnie came to me, and he said, 'Hey, it's nothing personal. I got to catch a plane in the morning, so I need to go on first.' I was like, 'Oh God, OK. I'll do it for you, Ronnie. I'll do it for you.' But I was so intimidated by that. I said, 'You're going to have to bring your own plane next time, Ronnie, because I'm not doing it again.'"
Skaggs, 69, played shows with Milsap in the early '80s, and their relationship is different than the one Milsap shares with Morgan. Skaggs remembers joking with him, telling him he "really loved the red shirt" Milsap was wearing, knowing he couldn't see it.
"He said, 'Ha, ha, ha. No, you ain't going to fool me,'" Skaggs recalled, explaining that Milsap was always very independent and enjoyed doing things himself, like wiring electronics or even driving his tour bus.
Skaggs wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't seen it himself. Milsap and Skaggs were playing shows together and on a particularly long drive. They weren't playing that night but trying to reach a city particularly far away. Their buses traveled together, and Skaggs took a driving shift to give his bus driver a break.
"I'm going down the road, and I see Milsap's bus coming up beside us," Skaggs said. "I didn't slow down, but I looked past Ronnie's bus driver, and there is Ronnie driving his bus. I almost ran off the road when I saw that. I'm just saying how the guy was fearless."
Milsap said, "it's a thrill" to have "these incredibly gifted folks honor my music and me."
"Each one is a great talent in their own right," he said. "I'm humbled by their participation and thankful for their friendships."
The Final Nashville Show: A Tribute to Ronnie Milsap will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Tickets start at $46.50 and are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com .

Creating a new way of recording (being blind his hyper-attuned hearing led him to create/build what is now known as Ronnie’s Place), he broke genre rules and became one of the biggest pop/AC and even R&B artists of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Six Grammys. CMA Entertainer of the Year and four Album of the Year Awards. The first country video played on MTV (the ironic “She Loves My Car”). An early champion of NFL star Mike Reid, who wrote many of Ronnie’s #1 hits and who’d go on to write Bonnie Raitt’s second most enduring classic, “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Always chasing the music, always hungry for the songs, he is now an inspiration for a new generation of country stars from critical standard setters Kacey Musgraves and Little Big Town to CMA/ACM Entertainers of the Year Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean, as well as a standard-setter for friends like Dolly Parton, George Strait, Willie Nelson, Steven Curtis Chapman and even groundbreakers Leon Russell and Billy Gibbons. The Man… The Legend
Born blind (his family thought it was retribution for sin), Ronnie Milsap’s grandparents gave the boy over to the North Carolina State School for the Blind hoping for a better chance. There, Milsap discovered music – deviating from the school’s classical curriculum to explore the nascent realms of race music, rock & roll and jazz.
Being the brilliant kid he was, it wasn’t long until he’d found his way into the local clubs and the tiny indie labels.
Suddenly, he was sharing bills with Ray Charles and James Brown on a circuit that included the Howard Theater, the Royal Peacock, and more.
It was Ray Charles who told the young pianist when he was offered a scholarship to Young Harris College’s law program, “ Son, I can hear the music inside you… ” – It settled Milsap’s fate.
Living in Atlanta, playing clubs and doing sessions, Ronnie caught wind that JJ Cale was looking for a keyboard player. Cale hired him. Ronnie went on to work at the Whiskey for a good while.
From Atlanta, Ronnie moved to Memphis where he was doing sessions with Chips Moman , where Elvis famously commanded, “ More thunder on the keys, Milsap ,” during the recording of “Kentucky Rain.” It was there he was asked to play the Whiskey on the famed Sunset Strip in LA. While staying at the notorious Hyatt House, Charley Pride saw the white kid playing rock & soul and suggested giving Nashville a try.
Now, looking back on the last 50 years, no country singer had as smooth a touch as Ronnie Milsap.
Blending country and soul so elegantly it could often appeal to a pop audience — and it did: “ (There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me” went all the way to number five on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1981 — Milsap also had deep roots in soul.
Long before he was a fixture on the country charts — during his prime, he racked up 35 number one hits — Milsap cracked the R&B charts with a version of Ashford & Simpson ’ s “ Never Had It So Good,” and that familiarity with rhythm & blues was apparent throughout his work. Nevertheless, his strength lay in taking it easy, a quality evident on “ Pure Love,” his breakthrough number one in 1974.
Arriving just after Charlie Rich brought a similar country-soul synthesis into the upper reaches of the charts, “ Pure Love” rocketed to number one on Billboard’s country charts, followed to that position by “ Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends” — a one-two punch that turned the singer into a star.
The Country Music Association would name Milsap Male Vocalist of the Year in 1976 and 1977, a sign of his runaway popularity in the late ’ 70s.
Between 1974’s “ (I’d Be) A Legend in My Time” and 1979′s “ Nobody Likes Sad Songs,” he hit the top of the Billboard country charts ten times, with “ Daydreams About Night Things” (1975), “ (I’m A) Stand By My Woman Man” (1976), “ It Was Almost Like a Song” (1977), and “ Only One Love in My Life” (1978) spending multiple weeks in the pole position.
“ It Was Almost Like a Song” became his first single to crack the pop Top 40, climbing all the way to number 16 while reaching seven on the Adult Contemporary chart. It was a harbinger of what was to come in the first half of the ’ 80s.
During the early ’ 80s, Milsap subtly adopted some Urban Cowboy and soft rock production techniques, a move that consolidated his position in the Top 10 in both the country and adult contemporary charts. Beginning with 1980′s “ Why Don’t You Spend the Night,” Milsap dominated the top position on Billboard’s country charts, reaching number one 13 times between 1980 and 1984. One of the rare times he missed the top slot was with 1983′s “ Stranger in My House,” a song that went to eight on the Adult Contemporary chart and peaked at 23 on Billboard’s Top 40. It arrived after a streak when Milsap was crossing over into the pop charts with regularity, beginning with 1980′s “ Smoky Mountain Rain,” which went to 24 pop and number one AC . The following year brought “ (There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me,” his biggest pop hit: it reached number five on the Hot 100, number two on Adult Contemporary.
The next two years were his most successful as a crossover act, thanks to the hits “ I Wouldn’t Have Missed It for the World” (1981), “ Any Day Now” (1982),” “ He Got You” (1982), and “ Don’t Know How Much I Love You” (1983).” This hot streak led the Academy of Country Music to named Milsap their Top Male Vocalist in 1982.
Milsap maintained his strength on Billboard’s country charts during the second half of the ’ 80s, scoring another ten number one hits between 1985 and 1989, including the Kenny Rogers duet “ Make No Mistake, She’s Mine,” which took home the Best Country Vocal Performance Duet Grammy in 1987.
Only two of these managed to be major Adult Contemporary hits, though, and both were heavily nostalgic: the oldies ode “ Lost in the Fifties Tonight (In the Still of the Night”) went to eight in 1985 — and “ Happy, Happy Birthday Baby,” a cover of a ’ 50s chestnut by the Tune Weavers.
As the ’ 90s began, Milsap remained a reliable hitmaker, reaching the Billboard Country Top 10 another four times in 1990 and 1991, but country radio began to embrace the new generation spearheaded by Garth Brooks around the time Milsap left his longtime home of RCA for Liberty.
“ True Believer,” the title song of his 1993 debut for Liberty, proved to be his last Top 40 hit, peaking at 30. Liberty released only one album from Milsap before he left for Capitol Nashville. There, he re-recorded his hits as Sings His Best Hits for Capitol Records in 1996.
For the next few years, Milsap worked on the oldies circuit, finally making his return to the studio with the Image Entertainment-released Just for a Thrill , a collection of standards, in 2004.
He returned to RCA in 2006 for My Life, an album designed as comeback to the country mainstream; it reached 46 on Billboard’s Album Charts, his first placement there since 1991.
Three years later, Milsap delivered Then Sings My Soul, his first collection of gospel and inspirational material; it peaked at 19 on the Country charts and eight on the Christian charts. Bigger Picture released Country Again in 2011, but his next heavily promoted release was Summer Number Seventeen, a collection of oldies covers which appeared on Sony/Legacy in 2014.
Following Gospel Greats in 2016, Milsap released The Duets, a 2018 collection that paired him with old friends like Willie Nelson and new stars like Kacey Musgraves .
