7.3 Godzilla and 10 speed trans in Excursion

ford excursion 7.3 kulutus

  • Add to quote

Trying to find someone that can swap out my V10 for a 7.3 godzilla and trans or if its even possible. New owner of 2002 Ex Limited 4WD, 167000 miles great truck and in great condition.

Ive also been thinking about this for my excursion.

Anything can be done with enough time and money. I don’t know of anyone who has done it but I’m sure someone out there will sooner or later. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

R.S.LOGAN said: " Absolutely will fit as it is much smaller dimensionally than the V-10 or oil burner 7.3. Look at videos on youtube for exact dimensions. Only slightly larger than a 351W. Very slightly. 3 Videos on there detailing every aspect of this engine. The 10 speed is only slightly larger diameter than the 6r80 6 speed. Do this swap! Ford will have a control pack within 90 days and that was calling them a week ago. 5 wires to connect and it's running. The control pack from what the Ford rep says will also control the tranny so wiring is a no brainer. An Excursion is the perfect candidate next to a 78-79 Bronco! There is a guy on the 73-79 forum that bought an entire wrecked 2020 4X4 for $6000 and he is already underway. Still no word on power steering though. No published provision to bolt a pump to the block and no word on a power rack or gearbox. The 2020 is electro/hydraulic. Fat Fender garage is already teasing this swap on their website." AND The Behemoth Returns: Ford Will Bring Back The Excursion – The Large By Huge SUV Isn’t Dead Yet May 11, 2020 Brian Lohnes BangShift News , BangShift XL , XL Big Truck Feature , XL Truck Feature 5 (By Tom Lohnes) – The Ford Excursion was and is a valuable car. Based on F-250 underpinnings, the Excursion could be had with a yeoman 5.4-liter Triton V8 or a tough as nails 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel. With the crossover and SUV trend in full swing, it would be a great idea for Ford to revive the Excursion. And if all the reports are correct, they are. Ford just filed a patent last night bearing the Excursion name. With the new release of refreshed Ford Super Duty trucks, a new Excursion is a very probable thing to come out of Ford in the next few years. Most likely these will be packing Ford’s new 7.3-liter “Godzilla” gas engine and their revised 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel, along with a 10-speed automatic and 2WD or 4WD. The Excursion should slot above the already massive Expedition and Expedition MAX, and should be at least 250 inches, or over 20 feet long. If we go on history, the Big Ford should weigh in the 7,000 pound range, peaking near an 8,000 pound figure fully loaded. Expect the new Excursion to have the same front end, interior, and towing capabilities (minus the ability to haul a gooseneck trailer) as the F-250, and the diesel could offer above 1,000 lb.-ft of torque. Now, how much would all of this cost? Well, I’m gonna go ahead and guess that the base model will start at around $60,000, with the top-of-the-line Limited trim topping $100,000. What can I say, it’s a big price for a big vehicle. Click to expand...

Absolutely, money will get the swap done. Other than the cool factor is a new 7.3 motor at $7,000 plus trans worth about 50-100 HP? Torque spec seems to be close to the 6.8.

Remember that the Godzilla is tuned conservatively. With a tune it’ll be even further ahead. And with some mods people are making crazy power with them in na form. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I will be buying an excursion and doing a godzilla swap. It's pretty much impossible to find one on youtube right now.

I need advise on 6.0 or 7.3L Ford Excursion

  • Add to quote

Just to let you know I keep a vehicle for a long time. My last vehicle was a 1988 toyota Landcruiser that has over 310k miles on it. I need more towing power than what my Landcruiser can do. So I am looking at buying a Ford Excursion to replace it. I like the 4x4 options on it and how much room they offer. But I am trying to find a used one and want to see if the 7.3l or 6.0l is better. I don't want to have a lot of problems with it but i know I will be putting some miles on it. I saw on an early post someone talk about the 6.o but not a whole lot is said about the 7.3L Thanks for all your help in advance.

From my observations on this topic- your best bet for reliability would be a low-mileage 2003 with the 7.3. Good luck. Low-mileage 7.3's are like gold- expensive and rare. FWIW, my 6.0 has been a good truck, but I am only pushing 50K on the clock, and there have been mixed results in reliability across the board.

ford excursion 7.3 kulutus

i personally would go with the 7.3 my dad has a 1987 f-350 with a 1990 7.3l in it with no problems with over 270k on the odomiter and my grandfather has a 1999 and 2 2002 7.3L and no problems but i have a friend with a 2005 6.0 and he has lots of problems with it so personally i like the 7.3

id go with the 7.3 my dad has a 2000 7.3 excursion with 310k miles. just retired to be used as a run around truck for his office.

I'll be the odd duck. As long as you've got a good Oasis, I'd go with the 6.0. However, if you're going to tow any decent amount of weight, be prepared to reach into your pockets for some extra scratch. The stock suspension of the Excursion isn't worth jack squat.

70k miles on my 05 6.0 Ex and I don't have any issues, runs just fine for me. I like the torque shift tranny way better then the 4r100 (i think thats what it is). I get better fuel mileage with the 6.0 then I did on the 7.3. I put 400k on my 7.3L and sold it, didn't have any issues with it either. The only thing I don't care about the 6.0 is all the emission egr crap they put on there, but then again I haven't had any issues either. All in all I say whatever you find with the best value and low mileage that's in good shape for the long haul.

My 6.0 has been terific. It's a towing monster and has not had any problems. That's not to say there are no problems with that engine. If it were me, I would find a 2005 or later excursion that is completely stock with a good oasis report. That's going to give you a pretty big selection so you can pick the one that is just right for you. If the towing your going to do is the same as with your last vehical, I would think the X will be fine. Good Luck

The engine problems are usually minor and component based, but I think the foundation of the 6.0 is pretty good and seems to be stout. The transmission is light years better than the 4r100 and seems to be a much stronger unit. I'd rather deal with a few issues in the engine that allows me to limp if I have to than to deal with a trans that is giving me fits.

The transmission behind the 6.0 was also my deciding factor in a truck purchase. I liked the low-end grunt of a 7.3, especially with a Banks kit. The transmission, however, seemed flat out stupid compared to the one behind the 6.0. Overall, the 6.0 had better drivability as a result of the transmission's intelligence.

My 4R100 has 300k and still works great, if I ever have problems I'll get a BTS and still never have to worry.

in my oppinion the 7.3 is way better then the 6.0 any day of the week. ya the 6.0 may be stronger but the 7.3 has way less problems and is way easyer to work on. and worst comes the worst you can just change out the 4r100 for a torque shift tranny

But I do agree with you as the 7.3 being the better setup. Although, I contribute a bunch of the 6.0 problems to the emissions stuff put on it and Ford.

I traded in a 2000 crew cab dually w/7.3 for a 2005 f-250 6.0. I like the 6.0 but the 2000 7.3 seemed to be mor powerful , had better fuel milage and it had 3000000 on it. I do like the 6.0 so far but just isn't the same.

Sorry 300000 not 3000000

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: tjsulli790</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> Usually minor!! Come on, who are you fooling. Like I said, most of the parts I've had issues with have been garbage components (egr, oil cooler, degas bottle, egr cooler) The only major thing I had was a head gasket failure that led to a new set of heads. With the ARP's on it is running like a champ and I'm sitting at just over 80,000 miles.

300K is common to get with a 7.3L really to soon to tell with the 6.0l. I had a 7.3l Ex and now i have a 6.0 Dually, I felt a ton more secure with teh 7.3l, No matter what I did to it, i wasn't worried about it breaking...The 6.0 on the other hand, it's definaley in the back of my mind.

7.3 Excursion Fuel Mileage

  • Add to quote

Hello, I'm looking to buy a 2003 7.3 Excursion 4x4 Limited. Was wondering what people are seeing for MPG. I have a 2010 F-350 that gets at least 16.5 on the highway for comparison purposes and that I will keep but want to ensure this Excursion gets at least comparable mileage. Thanks.

Too many other variables there, like gear ratio, mods, driving habits, etc. My 7.3 F250, with 3.73s, stock wheels and conservative tires on high air, muffler delete, and always clean filters, with truck box full of tools and a couple of atvs will still get 16-17 locally and up to 23 on the open road. But the faster I go, so goes my fuel and my $$$. When my wife drives it, the numbers are shameful.

I was seeing about 18 on hwy but I haven't really taken full freeway trips to get a true hwy mileage. City I'd norm get 13-16 but its hard for me not to floor it.

i get 13-15 around town and i just got back from a long freeway trip that i got 18.3 with the ex

Since I did the ZooDad mod (along with 6637) air filter upgrade mod - I get about 15 in the city, and 75mph (right at about 1900 RPM) I've come close to 23mpg on the freeway. For that number though - I was driving at night, so cooler air and some good long straight aways, No drafting or hyper-mile'ing behind semis either. Also have a 4in. exhaust from the turbo out. Everything else is stock.

Was that with or without the 6 position chip?

That was without - I didn't get the Ts chip installed until this summer. Also to note - I didn't use the cruise control either - I noticed about 2 to 3 mpg loss when I used it.

I'm getting 15 to 17 around town and on a recent trip with the cruise set at 63 and some 73 I got 21.5. Taller tires on 20" rims, Dp chip in eco, bigger turbo. Stuff like that. I'd love some hybrid injectors and new tuning if i could find live tuning in Michigan!

That was using the trip set on the Gps and over almost 800 miles. Gotta love the 44 gal Ex fuel tanks.

If you're getting 2200+ at 75mph, you likely have a higher gear 3.93 or 4.10's probably. I know my gears are still the stock 3.73's. and mine is the 4x4 I think some of the 2wd's though did have higher gearing.

Humm.... I'm 4x4 stock 01 is yours newer? 1900 rpm for me is 69mph

Mine the `03 Excursion. If I remember right - there's a way to look at the axle codes, and it'll tell you what gears came stock in it.

I drove from Nashville TN to Stuart FL and got 21.3 mpg @70 mph on crusie... and some of that is 5-6% grade (no cruise). Florida is flat so I believe this is a good overall average for me. Towing my boat about 8K rigged and ready, I get 15 + or - mpg @65mph. I'm not heavy on the accelerator and use cruise all the time. My best is 23.4 mpg. To tell you the truth I don't even check anymore 'cause the mileage has exceeded my expectations. 3:73 gears 4WD Stock size tires stock height 4" exhaust cold intake Soon I'll be set up better for towing heavy around 10K-12K and with a 2" lift (V-B code springs) I expect those overall numbers to go down. I do not have a tuner... yet.

My ex is an 02 with 124k. Stock. 14-15 city 21 hwy.

using the mpg calculator on the overhead im getting 10-12 in the city and on the county roads doing 55-60 maybe 16-18 if i driver really nice. towing my 6x12 trailer with maybe 1200 pounds of cargo im getting 12-13. Any tips?? its a 00 and it has 3.73 Ls 285 tires 4x4. has clean filters too.

If you're running the stock air box - look into doing the ZooDad mod. I Picked up close to 2mpg on the highway alone after doing that. But that was also with a upgraded high-flow Airaid filter. But don't rely on the overhead - the calculations are not always accurate.

ZooDad mod is free. All you need is access to a drill or dremmel. And there's plenty of threads on what to do for cutting open the hole in the header panel. Again - without knowing if your air box is stock or if you're running a cold air kit will vary in prices. But the a stage 1 kit is a couple hundred roughly. Hence why some people look at doing the 6637 air filter mod. That can be done for as little as $50, but will require some modifications to the stock airbox (if not complete removal of it - depending on what your needs are.)

Due to a Ghost in the Machine, I am now down to 9mpg. Still haven't been able to find out if the P0630 code could have something to do with this.

Ford ais Intake is the best for up to 400hp, nice clean professional look vs the common cheapy 6637 filter kit that looks like a 16yr old put it on. And it filters WAY better. Not to mention the life of the filter! I don't have a fix for ur bad mileage but might wanna look into the ais.

P0630 is the VIN code not showing in the ECM. That's supposed to clear itself out after a little bit but I don't think that's the cause of your MPG issue.

the tag on your rear diff lists the gear ratio. if the tag is still there.

I just did a 600 mile stint all freeway with about half of it with some nasty head winds along with some decent climbs of up to 4000' elevation from damn near sea level. Filled it up and got a good solid measurement from miles traveled, and topping off the fuel tank again, and got 18.2 mpg. 2000 7.3 4x4 limited with 3.73 gears

Very nice what was your average speed?

Not a bad haul there RustRocket!

im tryin to figure out what im missing here ....I have 01 ex limited on 2.5 inch lift with 33s ...high flow air intake , full turbo back 4 in exaust muff delete ....get around 10.8 city and just did a trip I make all the time in my 05 6.0 diesel (avg 18-19 mpg) and got 15.8 mpg in the ex .....ex has 107k miles and recently changed all fitlers feels like the ex drags more (slows faster , takes longer and harder to get to speed ) but just might be diff in engines ....either way I feel like I should be doing better ....my next step is to clean the ebpv and throw a set of interstate megatron batteries in it ...anyone else have suggestions ? btw I don't tow with either truck

7.3's can be very finicky. ZooDad or CAI Kit + good (properly working) ICP, IPR, EBPS Sensors should net you (in the city) roughly 12-14mpg. Best way to find out if everything is behaving correctly is with some data logging with AutoEnginuity (AE). After that - HPOP, Injectors and tuning would be the way to go to see if you can get that mileage up.

Mine is bone stock. I set the cruise right at about 70 and let it go.

ya the ole right foot has a big input. i average only 14 mpg highway/city, some of my injectors are getting rather tired.

  1. what is a realistic fuel economy on a stock 7.3 excursion?

With a cold air intake and 4inch exhaust: Summer diesel - I get about 14 to 15mpg in the city. On the highway - I've gotten 19mpg, but not using any A/C or Cruise. I found that if I used the cruise - I lost 2mpg on the highway. 2003 EX, 7.3L 4inch Lift, Nitto Trail Grappler's, KMC XD Spy's.

  2. real v-10 vs. 7.3 fuel mileage in an Excursion

6.0L F250 pulling 8k - Flat terrain 13.9mpg and hilly terrain 12mpg. Highway speed is 68-70mph. Both trucks are automatics, 4x4's, and 3.73's. Around town the 7.3L Excursion avg 15mpg in the summer and 14.2mpg in the winter. The 6.0L around town averages 13.5mpg in the summer and 12.5mpg in the winter.

  3. 6.0 vs 7.3 in an Excursion

Generally, the 7.3 is considered a better hauler and the 6.0 a better motor for around town driving. The 6.0 feels more like a gasser. Later 6.0s are usually fine once you've done the required 'fixes' but I'd stay away from early models. The 7.3 responds very well to mods but the 6.0 is better if left fairly stock.

  4. 7.3 Excursion Which Year (s) is Best?

I've already read enough on the 6.0 to rule that out engine out of the equation; don't want the economy of a 6.8, or the anemic (for this SUV) 5.4, which leaves the 7.3 engine that I'm looking seriously into. Here's what I know so far about the 2000 - 2003's.... Engine wise, 7.3 had forged rods in 2000 and early 01, then powder metal rods ...

  5. 7.3 Godzilla and 10 speed trans in Excursion

Most likely these will be packing Ford's new 7.3-liter "Godzilla" gas engine and their revised 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel, along with a 10-speed automatic and 2WD or 4WD. The Excursion should slot above the already massive Expedition and Expedition MAX, and should be at least 250 inches, or over 20 feet long.

2001 ford excursion. 7.3. ... Ford later put the V-10s and 6.0L engines in Excusions, but they were not nearly a popular as the 7.3 Powerstroke. Understand years past some folks even did a frame up restoration on 7.3 Excursions because they pulled their trailers so well and had large fuel tanks. Also the additional cargo space was a big plus.

  7. 7.3 Excursion

Air lift suspension, Warn hubs, shift kit, and a nice brush guard bumper. The 7.3 has a better reputation than the 6.0. At 150,000 miles, it is barely broken in. I've had a few minor issues with it.UVC connector, EBPV sensor. Trouble reading codes. Many I looked at had rebuilt trannys.

  11. I need advise on 6.0 or 7.3L Ford Excursion

in my oppinion the 7.3 is way better then the 6.0 any day of the week. ya the 6.0 may be stronger but the 7.3 has way less problems and is way easyer to work on. and worst comes the worst you can just change out the 4r100 for a torque shift tranny. company trucks. :ford:2002 ford F-350 powerstroke cc sb zf-6.
