FootJoy Tour Alpha 2024 Golf Shoe Review

Jeremy Ellwood takes the latest version of this eye-catching spiked FootJoy shoe for a test spin over several rounds

FootJoy Tour Alpha 2024 Golf Shoe Review

The visual appeal of this shoe is matched by its performance and it will be a particularly good option for those needing more stability than mobility as they swing. Very comfortable from the top down, although the firm soles may not suit extensive walking on hard surfaces.

Eye-catching looks on the shelf

Very comfortable leather upper

One of the most stable-feeling shoes out there

Not the most comfortable walk on hard surfaces

Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

You could argue that the latest 2024 version of FootJoy's Tour Alpha shoe is perhaps a smidgen ‘young’ for me, especially in the white/navy/lime version I tested, but I liked them straight out of the box, and age is just a number, right? They looked smart, sturdy where they need to be at the point of contact with the ground and had the air of a shoe that would be comfortable from the word go thanks to the soft upper and well-cushioned heel area. But are they one of the best golf shoes on the market? I tested them to find out.

FootJoy Tour Alpha 2024 Golf Shoe Review

Quite possibly on the evidence of my first time out wearing them on the hilly Palmerston course at Brocket Hall. Yes, there was very slight rubbing on the side of the big toes towards the end and a minor ankle rub on slopes one way, but these are not uncommon issues for me on a first outing and I had every confidence they would quickly be as comfortable as a pair of old favorites. That has been the case in subsequent rounds, as I’ve now pretty much forgotten I’m wearing a still-new pair of shoes, with the softness of the ChromoSkin leather upper really standing out.

Much talk in the shoe world these days is about the need for either mobility or stability as you swing, depending on your action. This shoe unashamedly focuses on the latter and you get the sensation from the relatively inflexible sole very early on that stability is what this shoe does best.

FootJoy Tour Alpha 2024 Golf Shoe Review

FootJoy’s own OPS system (Optimized Performance Stabilizer) uses three elements to provide this - the external 3D-molded heel counter, which is thankfully not uncomfortable, the A-Frame design and a lateral clip that works to lock your foot in so you can go at it with confidence. Additionally the spiked outsole , which features nine cleats, further adds to that feeling of stability.

Now, as someone who struggles to get his right foot off the ground through impact, you could argue that added stability is the last thing I need, but I liked the sensation it gave me even if my footwork is about as far removed from Scottie Scheffler ’s as humanly possible.

FootJoy Tour Alpha 2024 Golf Shoe Review

Perhaps the downside of the firmer sole is that this shoe feels firmer on hard surfaces so bear that in mind if the courses you play require a lot of walking along hard paths or surfaces. Speaking of which, take a look at our guide on the best golf shoes for walking too...

Finally it is worth noting that the Alphas are 100% waterproof golf shoes and, depending on where you are in the world, often come with a waterproof warranty as well. Sizes go from 7-15 and amazingly there are four widths to choose from as well - narrow, medium, wide and extra wide golf shoes for those that need it. The shoe also comes in three colors - (white/navy/lime, white/white/silver, black/white/silver).

This is an opportunity to work alongside yachting industry professionals, gain experience, develop your skillset, and get paid to do it.

Testimonials

Firstly, I want to thank Georgina, for all her help and assistance since November last year. It was an absolute pleasure working with her leading up to the commencement of my courses. A big thank you for her professionalism, and timeliness and for also taking the time to answer all of my yachting-related questions in general. A big thank you to the instructors at SYSA – I thoroughly enjoyed many of the classes and the way in which the content was presented. I especially want to thank Jason, James, Luhan, Matti, Jake and Kyle Tinker as they have been incredibly helpful and kind during the courses, and a big thank you to Chris and Tallon – even though I did not have them as instructors, they still assisted me and helped out where necessary. I feel adequately prepared and pretty confident heading over at the start of April, which I think is exactly what anyone would like to feel after completing all the required certifications. I also strongly believe in sustainable and long lasting relationships, therefore should things work out in this industry for me, I would happily avail myself to pass over any experience and knowledge to SYSA and perhaps somewhere down the line have an opportunity to instruct any aspiring yachties.  I know networking is paramount in this industry, but building relationships is more important to me, as it comes from a place of “what can I offer you” first, instead of only considering if there is anything that you can offer me. Matthew Odendaal - SYSA Courses
I would like to take this opportunity to thank and compliment the SYSA team – I have recently completed my courses in order to go over and start my career on the Super Yachts. Coming from the Transport & Logistics industry and having my career well on the go here in South Africa, this change in career paths was an exciting but also daunting one for me, but from the first email to Georgina and Lance I am happy to say that I was well-informed and my worries put to rest. Lance, I would like to thank you for being willing to take the time before, I booked and paid for my courses, to meet with me and answer all the questions that I had and give me more information regarding the new venture I would find myself on in the future. This meant a great deal to me and also showed me that SYSA does not just put students through the courses but they also care. To the rest of the SYSA team and instructors, thank you for your support and great teaching skills. Coming from a totally different industry, not once was I made to feel out of place. You guys really did make every one of us on the courses feel at ease and eager to learn. Your additional advice over and above the courses was highly appreciated. SYSA, thank you again for an epic introduction into the industry! I will definitely be back to do my progression courses in the future, and of course I will be spreading the word of your great service, enthusiasm, and teaching to others! Keegan Cranna - SYSA Courses
I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to the amazing team at SYSA for all the help and guidance and for taking an interest and getting to know me as a person. I am super happy to mention that I have secured my first role onboard a yacht and my 17 year Naval Career comes to an end soon as I get ready to set sail on a new adventure in the Yachting Industry. I will definitely recommend SYSA to anyone interested in getting started in the Yachting Industry. Craig Moore - SYSA Courses
I completed Day Skippers Theory and a lot of other Powerboat courses with SYSA. Day Skipper Theory was by far the most challenging and fun for me because there’s so much to learn. It helps to have an inspiring teacher who can explain everything to you in-depth and who makes it interesting because they are so passionate about it themselves. I found all the instructors to be patient, insightful, and well rounded in knowledge about the sea and planning a passage. Nixon Dyasi - Day Skippers Theory
Just finished my SYSA training courses and I’ve had so much fun and learned lots of new useful interesting things! All the instructors were really friendly and know exactly what they are doing. The team all come from professional yachting backgrounds so no need to tell you that all your questions will be answered. You arrive as a newbie and leave as a friend 😉 !! Xavier - SYSA Courses
Really great instructors with a lot of knowledge and experience. They treated us with respect and integrated some life lessons and yachting tips into the course. Couldn’t have asked for a better course. Joshua du Preez - Course: Powerboat level 2
Hi, just want to thank you and everyone at SYSA. I was so impressed with the course and most importantly the instructors. They were brilliant. I couldn’t have done it without them. So patient and caring. Thanks to you and the team Caitlin Robertson - SYSA Courses
I just want to thank you for such an incredible course at SYSA. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment and I have left with more than my money’s worth just in experiences and good times. You guys are fantastic Matt - Deckhand
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the opportunity to be a student at SYSA. The past 2 months was, to say the least, amazing. The courses are really well structured and I learned something new every day. Plus I enjoyed every minute of it. Also, the instructors at SYSA are truly fantastic, as well as the facilities. Once again, many thanks to you and your team, can’t wait to see you guys again! Danie - Deckhand
Good day, I just want to let you know that I have received both my license and deckhand certificate. Once again , I just want to say thank you very much for the experience, and all the information I have walked away with after the courses. Hope to see you again soon in the future if the chance comes to better myself in the industry. All the best to you that side! Keep well Calvin - Deckhand

Hi there Bernhard, Once again thank you for all the help on the course. I will be joining the new project with confidence!

The Networking Essentials course gave me the confidence needed to step up into a role which required more responsibility and networking knowledge. From here I believe the knowledge in networking will be exponential and I look forward to taking another course in the future.

I would like to say a special thanks to Bernhard for his ability to make a seemingly daunting topic quite manageable and kept it interesting throughout the course. I highly recommend this course for anyone wanting to gain confidence in their ability to tackle basic Networking issues and configurations.

All the best,

Yacht Engineer Training Courses

MCA Superyacht / SV Engineer training for vessels up to 9000kW and 3000GT

Yacht / SV Engineer Training Overview

Although there are different training routes and licensing authorities/countries under which engineers may qualify to work on superyachts, a common, broadly accepted route is the MCA Engineer Small Vessel Training Route. The MCA recently changed its engineering qualification structure in order to simplify the number and level of qualifications across the industry. They have pulled together pre-existing qualifications, leading to certificates of competency (CoC) restricted to yachts (and other small vessels) only. This single generic qualification is now referred to as " Engineer Officer Small Vessel Certificate of Competency" .

Please consult a recognized training provider before booking any training courses and view the "Engineer Officer Small Vessel of Competency" Marine Information note, found on the MCA website.

Find info, requirements and links to yacht engineer training centres for:

Junior / Assistant Engineer:

  • An STCW : EVERY crew member onboard must hold a valid STCW
  • An ENG1 Medical Certificate : EVERY crew member onboard must hold a valid ENG1
  • AEC 1: The Approved Engine Course 1 is an entry-level qualification for the MCA engineering training schedule and is regarded as the first step on the ladder. It is generally a 5-day / 30-hour course that aims to provide candidates with practical basic hands-on training and theoretical knowledge of diesel engines. The main intention of this course is to teach the knowledge to serve in an ENTRY LEVEL capacity in the engineering department or for a crew member primarily working in another department to assist with engineering functions, for example, a deck/engineer. Holding an AEC certificate will allow you to be a chief engineer on a yacht over 24m and less than 200 Gross Tons or act as an assistant engineer on vessels over 200 GT up to 60NM from a safe haven.
  • AEC 2:  The Approved Engine Course II follows on from AEC I knowledge. It contains a more practical element when compared to the AEC I. This course has been designed so that engineering qualifications are transferable between different industry sectors such as yachts, workboats, tugs, fishing vessels and so on and there will no longer be offshore limits.

The AEC is your gateway ticket into becoming an engineer, it is, therefore, essential to hold this qualification, gain sea time and work on your training record book (TRB) in order to progress in the engine room.

Kind Words from TYSA Students

Here’s what some of our wonderful students had to say…, emily rickard, iami guest: destination, events & interior management student.

“I LOVED doing the “IAMI Guest: Destination, Events & Interior Management” course, The fact the course covered so much will be so useful throughout my career, and I’ll definitely be delving back into it more than once. I definitely feel more informed, and more confident!

I felt so supported throughout the duration of this course with the 1-1 calls and I never once felt like I couldn’t reach out for support or help if I needed it. I loved being able to watch videos as well as read text and complete quizzes, it’s a really multi-faceted course.

The assignments were also so fun and I really enjoyed doing them. Overall the whole experience was amazing, so much so I’ve just purchased two more courses! Highly recommend!”

Georgia Orme, Advanced Interior Management & Head of Service Student

Thank you TYS for the Zoom call today; it’s such an enjoyable part of the course. I got full clarification on feedback, could ask questions and gain more insight into leading a department successfully. I would highly recommend the course to anyone who needs that extra push and confidence boost before stepping up or starting a new role.

I also love how the course is always available to you upon completion, so you can also go back for reference if needed. Plus, the TYA team are lovely and thorough in their work; I can trust that I am learning from the best (albeit virtually!).

Lucie Mostyn, Foundations of Mixology Student

“I greatly enjoyed the course, I found it full of useful and new information. I loved the mixture of reading, download and video material, it made for an easy and interesting study. Having the quizzes at the end of each module pushed me to remember the information I was writing down and is an effective way to raise my study level.

I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to feel confident starting out behind the bar learning some key skills, and methods and setting you up well to grow as a mixologist!”

Alexia, Junior Stew Housekeeping Student

“I signed up for the Junior Stew Housekeeping course in order to further my existing housekeeping knowledge to Superyacht standard prior to commencing my first season as a stew and have found it nothing short of amazing so far.

The video modules, PDF printouts of products and methods, and information are very thorough and I’m learning lots. Can’t wait to put it to use.

Thanks for creating the course and I look forward to completing it! 👏🏽🙌🏽”

History of oryol oblast.

The territory of today’s Oryol Oblast was settled in the late Paleolithic. In the chronicles of the 12th century, the towns of Mtsensk, Novosil, Kromy were mentioned. At that time, the area was part of the Chernigov principality.

About 400 years later, the town-fortresses of Bolkhov, Oryol, Livny were founded. In the 16th-17th centuries, this region was the borderland of the Russian state. It was a place where more than once battles against the nomads took place, dramatic events of the Time of Troubles occurred here too.

As the threat from the nomads reduced, agricultural colonization of the area began. Oryol became a large grain-producing town. Standing on the Oka River, it became a large bread market, which provided Moscow with crops and flour.

Oryol Governorate was established by the decree of Catherine II in 1778. It included a considerable part of the present Bryansk and Lipetsk regions.

From the second half of the 19th century, railways and highways connected Oryol with Moscow and Ukraine, Baltic and Volga regions. The city became a large transport hub. Before 1917, Oryol had a cadet school, theological seminary, several gymnasiums (P.A.Stolypin, Prime Minister of the Russian Empire in 1906-1911, graduated from one of them).

In autumn 1919, bloody battles between the White Army and the Red Army took place near Oryol and Kromy. Oryol Oblast was formed on September 27, 1937. In 1944, Bryansk Oblast was separated from Oryol Oblast. In 1954, nine eastern districts were separated from Oryol Oblast with the formation of Lipetsk Oblast.

This region became a place of severe battles during the Second World War - the front line passed through the region over 20 months. When Oryol was liberated, the first fireworks during the war was fired in Moscow on August 5, 1943.

The FootJoy Quantum golf shoe is built for comfort with intense padding underfoot.  Athletic fit.  Surprisingly good traction and a 1 year waterproof warranty.

Introduction

When I think of FootJoy, I think of the PGA Tour.  I think about some of the most stable shoe available, built for traction in all environments.  However, the new FootJoy Quantum shows that the company can do comfort, too.

footjoy tour alpha white

My first look at the FootJoy Quantum focused on the thick, cushy sole .  The textures around the sides enhance the cloud-like appearance.  That airy look continues with a fabric upper that looks light and and breathable.

footjoy tour alpha white

A more studied look takes in a variety of textures and materials in the upper .  There’s a firmer material around the toe for easy cleaning and durability.  Around the ankle, a checked material provides ample cushioning.  The classic “FJ” logo is displayed prominently on the heel in the slate blue contrast color.  This subdued blue gives the Quantum visual interest without being a “look at me” shoe.

The FootJoy Quantum is available in three colorways : white/blue/red (seen here), black/white, and grey/white/blue.

SofFOAM technology is the headliner in the FootJoy Quantum golf shoe.  Per FootJoy, it delivers “our most plush and cushioned ride , for maximum energy absorption and all-day walking comfort.”  Having tested just about every FootJoy for the last decade plus, I would agree that this is their most cushy shoe yet.

footjoy tour alpha white

As soon as my foot slid into the Quantum, it felt the pillowy support.  Every surface was soft and gentle, and the OrthoLite EcoPlush Fit-Bed underfoot really stood out.  Though I’m typically a fan of more barefoot style shoes, I can definitely get the appeal of this walking-on-a-cloud feel .  According to FootJoy, this footbed will not ever “set,” so the cushioning should never diminish.

Finally, the FootJoy Quantum has a moderate fit that is comfortable without being sloppy .  Sizing is typical for FootJoy, which Matt Meeker and I find a little larger than other brands.  My toes could barely feel the edges of the shoe, having plenty of room to wiggle.  My heel felt solidly supported without being pinched.  The one standout area is the arch support, which is very pronounced.

Performance

Flipping over the FootJoy Quantum reveals a sole that’s not nearly as aggressive looking as many of its peers.  Judging only with my eyes, I thought that the Quantum would lack the excellent traction that’s found in other FootJoy offerings like the Pro/SLX [review HERE ].  Matt Meeker and I both found that the Quantum’s traction exceeded expectations .  While it’s not on a level with a shoe like the Tour Alpha [review HERE ], it holds its own among spikeless shoes.

Where the Quantum really surpasses other super cushioned shoes is in the fit.  I’ve found that some brands allow their most cushioned shoes to have a looser, less athletic fit.  The FootJoy Quantum, however, puts a firm grip on your heel to keep your foot both cushioned and locked in place .

Given the immense amount of cushioning, I expected the Quantum to offer a very tall stack height, which is the norm for FootJoy.  I was surprised to find that this is one of the shorter FootJoy’s I’ve ever tested, and the heel drop also feels more moderate .  While the Quantum is still nowhere near a flat, natural motion shoe, it feels to me like as close as FootJoy has been in recent years.  As always, it’s important to note that there is no right or wrong here, just preference.

footjoy tour alpha white

A small, interesting detail on the Quantum is the use of a textured shoelace.  Matt Meeker and I both made note of this, commenting on how well they locked into place.  While laces aren’t as important as fit or traction, it’s nice to see the industry leader innovating across all elements of the shoe.

Finally, the Quantum is 100% waterproof , and it comes with a 1-year waterproof warranty .  This was a surprise to me given the mesh upper, but it was a welcome one.  Given the supreme comfort, it would be a shame to not be able to wear these just because it’s drizzling.

footjoy tour alpha white

If you’re looking for a more comfortable, cushioned shoe that doesn’t sacrifice an athletic fit and traction, the new FootJoy Quantum is for you.  The aptly named SofFOAM Technology will have your feet feeling as good when you walk off the course as when you started.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
