Top 13 Things to Do in Jodhpur, Rajasthan

famous tourist places in jodhpur

Jodhpur, the second-largest city in Rajasthan (albeit pleasingly unspoiled by haphazard development), has a fascinating past. Located on the edge of the Thar desert, about 155 miles from the border with Pakistan, Jodhpur is, in fact, where the eponymous horseback riding pants got their name! These unusual pants were designed by the Maharaja of Jodhpur's son, Pratap Singh, and worn by his polo team when visiting the Queen of England in 1897. The city is famous for its blue buildings, initially painted to signify that they were occupied by Brahmins, the highest caste in India.

This list of top Jodhpur attractions and places to visit will give you a diverse city experience. Jodhpur Heritage Walk conducts an immersive three- to four-hour guided tour through the city. If you have a spare day or two, visit nearby Bishnoi village or Osian, where you can see carved temples and go on a less-touristy camel safari.

Explore Mehrangarh Fort

Imposing Mehrangarh Fort, which rises above the "Blue City," is one of the largest and most famous forts . It's an impressive, well-preserved heritage structure, and there's much to discover inside. The fort has been privately restored, and its museum has an outstanding display of royal memorabilia, including about 15,000 items from Maharaja Gaj Singh II's collection. The cultural performances that happen daily at various places inside the fort, as part of the particular focus on folk art and music, are another highlight. Plan your visit with this complete guide to Mehrangarh Fort .

Want a romantic evening dinner? The Chokelao Mahal Terrace restaurant serves traditional Rajasthani cuisine. The Fort is also an evocative setting for music festivals. Don't miss the annual Rajasthan International Folk Festival in October and World Sufi Spirit Festival in February .

Ride the Jodhpur Flying Fox

Adventure lovers can't pass up the unique opportunity to zip-line with Mehrangarh Fort as the backdrop. The circuit has six zip lines and takes around 90 minutes to complete. Groups of up to 12 people depart at appointed times. It's located on the north side of the Mehrangarh Fort.

Relax at Jaswant Thada

This intricately crafted cenotaph (empty commemorative tomb) was built in 1899 In honor of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. It features white marble lattice screens and whimsical domes, while the inside is adorned with portraits of Rathore rulers. It's a peaceful place to relax and enjoy stunning views of the Fort and city. Many a tired tourist sprawls on the front lawn to recuperate after sightseeing.

Wander Through Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

The Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was developed in 2006 to restore the natural ecology of a large rocky wasteland area next to the Fort. Neglected for many years, the park was overrun by an invasive thorny shrub. After the bush was eradicated, more than 80 native species of rock-loving plants from the Thar desert were grown there. The Park extends 70 hectares (around 200 acres) of rehabilitated land and has a walking trail. It's interesting to explore at different times of the year, as its foliage changes with the seasons.

Check Out the Clock Tower and Old City Markets

A trip to Jodhpur wouldn't be complete without visiting the bustling Old City. Many people choose to stay in this area, too, as some of the best budget hotels in Jodhpur are located there and have fabulous Fort views. The Old City's famous landmark, the clock tower, stands at the heart of it—and it's still working! Next to it, Sadar Market retains a traditional village bazaar feel. It's chaotic and colorful and sells almost everything, including handicrafts, spices, saris, and fabric. If you feel uncomfortable in crowds, you might prefer to take a walking tour rather than explore the market area yourself, as the congestion can be overwhelming. These walking tours offered by Jodhpur Magic and Virasat Experiences are two recommended options.

Dine Overlooking the Stepwell

Travel and Still life photography/Getty Images

An exciting Urban Regeneration Project is being undertaken to return the Old City to its former glory but with a vibrant and hip spin. As a result, Jodhpur has a newly restored yet ancient stepwell, located just north of the clock tower. Built in the 1740s and called Toorji ka Jhalra, it sat stagnant for years until the owners of the heritage boutique RAAS Hotel purified the pool and sandblasted the steps. The area has been turned into a contemporary square with cool cafes and shops, including a Good Earth home decor store and a branch of Jaipur-based Gem Palace. A secret door at the RAAS hotel will take you directly to Step Well Square. Step Well Cafe has the same owners as RAAS and provides the best view over the stepwell. It serves Continental and Indian cuisine, coffee, tea, wine, cocktails, and beer.

Stroll Along the Streets of the Blue City

Unlike the crowded clock tower area, the blue part of Jodhpur behind the fort, known as Navchokiya, is refreshingly quiet and devoid of tourists. Don't miss spending some time leisurely strolling along its streets. It's also possible to go on a guided walking tour of the area to learn more about it. You can even stay amid the blue houses: Some of the top options in the area are  Singhvi's Haveli ,  Jewel Palace Haveli , Rani Mahal, and Jaswant Bhawan Homestay .

Tour the Area Around Gulab Sagar

Tim Makins/Getty Images

About 10 minutes walk north of Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell is Gulab Sagar. This 18th-century lake played an essential role in Jodhpur's traditional water management system. Not only does it provide a superb spot for photographing Mehrangarh Fort in the background, but there are also many interesting stepwells and temples hidden in the lanes around it. They include Mahila Bagh Ka Jhalra stepwell and Kunjabihari Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. You can discover them on this Stepwells and Temples walking tour .

Marvel at Umaid Bhawan Palace

Magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1944, was one of India's last grand palaces to be built. The royal family of Jodhpur still occupies a section of it. Most of the remainder has been converted into a luxurious palace hotel, and unfortunately, it's off-limits to anyone who's not staying there. If you can't afford $600 or more per night for a room, you can still get a glimpse inside the palace by having a pricey dinner at one of its restaurants, a drink of any kind at the bar, or visiting the museum. The museum mainly displays old photos of the Maharaja and his family. There's a vintage watch and car collection as well.

Take a Cooking Class at Spice Paradise

Spice Paradise is a spice shop run by a kindhearted husband and wife team (their unique masala chai blend has been refined and perfected over the years and is highly recommended). They also conduct Indian cooking classes which are hugely popular with foreigners. Along with delicious recipes, you'll get to meet a lovely family and gain priceless insight into Indian culture. If you don't have much time in Jodhpur, do book in advance as classes are often full.

Sample Some Indian Sweets

If you love not just Indian sweets but all kinds of Indian snacks, you'll want to visit the iconic Janta Sweet Home , renowned for making some of the best treats in Jodhpur. They're fresh and delicious, and the range is vast. Try the Mawa Kachori, a prestigious dish that originated from Jodhpur.

Shop at Sambhali Boutique

Sambhali Boutique is the perfect place to pick up some high-quality Jodhpur handicrafts and clothing in Indian and Western styles. All products are made by underprivileged women taught and employed by the Sambhali Trust. Items include silk and cotton camels and elephants, block-printed scarves and curtains, and shoulder bags. Custom orders can also be placed.

If you're looking for cheap accommodations, the Sambhali Trust operates from a very charming little guesthouse (the Durag Niwas Guest House ) that's a hit with backpackers. Long-term stays with all meals provided are possible.

Visit Mandore and Mandore Gardens

Mandore was the capital of the Marwar region before Jodhpur was founded, but now it's in a rather unkempt state. There's an old fort, an eclectic collection of temples and cenotaphs, and a small museum in the Mandore Gardens. The gardens are beautiful, albeit unkempt in places, and used as a local picnic spot. They're worth visiting for the fantastic architecture and history of a bygone era. The best time to go is during the week when it's quietest. If you love monkeys, you'll find plenty there! But be careful that they don't snatch your food!

1. mehrangarh fort.

The first place on the list of Jodhpur places to visit is Mehrangarh Fort. It rests on a 400-foot-high rocky hill. This majestic fort has a long and exciting history.

Even though the construction of Mehrangarh Fort was started in 1459 by Raja Rao Jodha, it was completed years later. It took several rulers of Rajasthan and 500 years for this fort to come into its final shape — the one you see right now.

Here are some more fascinating tidbits about the Mehrangarh Fort:

  • To pay homage to the Rathore clan’s revered deity ‘Sun,’ the fort is named ‘Mehrangarh,’ where ‘Mehrang’ means Sun and ‘Garh’ means fort.
  • The fort offers panoramic views of the city and the hundreds of blue houses nestled near the fort. If you’re a sunset lover, you’ll love witnessing one here.
  • The fort is at a height. You can do the short trek, passing through the beautiful blue houses of Jodhpur to reach the fort. Notably, going via a car or taxi takes another route.
  • The Mehrangarh Fort has a deep connection with music. It hosts the annual Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF), attracting musicians and music enthusiasts from around the globe.
  • The fort’s walls spread up to 10 kilometers, towering from 20 to 120 feet in height and 12 to 70 feet in width.
  • Remember to see the Sheesh Mahal and Phool Mahal inside the fort. Further, the fort’s museum houses a grand collection, including royal palanquins, arms, artworks, ancient coins, and textiles.

Stepwells are an integral part of Rajasthan’s rich heritage. We have been visiting several stepwells, including the world’s deepest stepwell, Chand Baori .

Toorji Ka Jhalra Stepwell is surely among the best Jodhpur places to visit. It lies well within the hustle and bustle of the Jodhpur city. You might have seen its viral pics on Instagram or on the Internet.

This stepwell has been a water source in the past, helping locals from the beat of the scorching sun during summers. However, nowadays, it’s a fun place to hang out for locals. You may also see some adventure junkies jumping, swimming, and taking baths in this stepwell.

Maharani Toorji, the queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh, constructed this stepwell in the 18th century.

The next on the list, Jodhpur places to visit, is a palace known as one of the world’s largest private residences — Umaid Bhawan Palace.

Maharaja Umaid Singh started the construction of Umaid Bhawan Palace in the 20th century. The goal was to provide employment to the local people during drought and famine (similar story behind Bara Imambara Lucknow ).

British architect Henry Lanchester has designed its exterior, which is of golden-yellow sandstone.

The palace has three parts:

  • Part One: the residence of the Jodhpur royal family
  • Part Two: a luxurious heritage hotel managed by the Taj Group
  • Part Three: open to tourists and travelers to explore the grand hall, museum, and beautiful gardens.

Here’s a fantastic thing: a museum within the palace has vintage cars, antique clocks, and exquisite artifacts. You can visit to get a glimpse into the history and lifestyle of the royal family.

5. Clock Tower and Sardar Market

Jodhpur’s Clock Tower is locally known as Ghanta Ghar. It was constructed in the late 19th century to honor Maharaja Sardar Singh.

Like most clock towers in Indian cities, it stands as the chaos of the city. You can gaze at it, admire it, or take selfies with it — there’s no cost. However, you must get a ticket if you wish to climb up.

The lights added to it add a mystic appearance to the night. And if you’re someone who loves architecture — it is sure to hook you.

Mandore Garden is a beautiful complex comprising cenotaphs of the Rathore dynasty royal families. The environment is lush green and picturesque, with delicate architectural marvels.

Mandore Garden has monuments dedicated to the Maharajas of the Marwar region. These red sandstone structures are intricately designed, which attracts history buffs, photoholics, and architecture lovers alike.

You’ll find the Hall of Heroes in the garden, showcasing statues of Rajput heroes and deities.

As we said, Mandore Gardens is not just about historical structures. You can stroll through lush green lawns, relax on the grass fields, and appreciate the peace there.

So, who are the Bishnois, and what is this village safari?

The Bishnois community profoundly connects with nature and is conscious of environmental conservation. They live in a village near Jodhpur, which still hosts wild animals.

Further, the Bishnoi village safari will introduce you to the traditions and sustainable lifestyle of the Bishnoi community. You can see blackbucks, deer, and various bird species in their natural habitats. You’ll also witness artisans crafting clay pots and traditional handicrafts.

Forts and Palaces - The Royals of Rajasthan

Perched on top of a hill at a height of 410 feet above the city of Jodhpur is the most beautiful structure of the city, the Mehrangarh Fort. Built in the year 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, the fort is an architectural marvel and is steeped in history.

The fort has 7 huge gates which were built by different rulers at different points of time and were made as a reminder of their victory in battles. The fort houses a number of magnificent palaces namely, the Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Jhanki Mahal, Takhat Vilas and Zenana Mahal, and now functions as a museum.

The Phool Mahal is the most elaborate palace in the fort. As the name suggests, Phool Mahal was designed to look like the most beautiful flower, and it does. The palace was made by Maharaja Abhaya SIngh and was intended to be a pleasure chamber for the King

The interior of the palace is laden with gold, uses a colorful palette, and is adorned with paintings and intricate carvings on its walls and ceilings. The built and design of the palace are a fine testament to the extravagant taste of the royals.

Moti Mahal translates to 'Palace of pearls' is considered to be the biggest palace at Mehrangarh and was made by Raja Sur Singh as a darbar or the court where he would listen to the concerns of his subjects.

The palace earns the name due to its surface being covered with a mixture of finely crushed seashells and lime plaster which gives it a shiny look. The intricacies of its interior with the beautiful mirror work, religious paintings and stained glass windows make the palace a sight to behold

The Sheesh Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors is another exquisite palace in Mehrangarh Fort. The palace is known for the marvelous interior with its walls and ceilings covered in mirrors of different sizes and the walls adorning painted panels of various Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Sheesh Mahal was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh and was one of his private chambers.

Built by Maharaja Takhat Singh, the Takhat Vilas served as his residence during his reign and displays a blend of Rajput and British architecture. The walls and ceiling of the palace are decorated with paintings which showcase stories from Hindu mythology.

The Jhanki Mahal was built for the women of the royal family to observe the royal ceremonies since they were barred from coming into public view, and so they observed the ceremonies through the windows of the palace.

This palace at Mehrangarh Fort called the Zenana Mahal was built for the royal women and was kept separated from the men's quarters. The royal women lived at the palace and spent a lot of their time here. The noticeable architecture of the palace includes structures made of sandstones and intricate carvings.

Another marvel at Jodhpur by the Rathore dynasty is the Umaid Bhawan Palace. Built by Maharaja Umaid Singh, it is another place for tourists to explore. The Palace is divided into three parts, a luxury stay hotel, museum and the private residence of the royal family of Jodhpur.

Temples of Jodhpur- Carved for the Gods

Apart from the majestic palaces and forts, Jodhpur also has some mesmerizing temples as well. Take a look at them while on your trip to the city.

The Chamunda Mata Temple was built by Rao Jodha of the Rathore dynasty, and is situated at the Mehrangarh Fort.

The Rathore King brought the deity of Goddess Chamunda from the previous capital of Mandore to Jodhpur and established it at the temple. The story of the temple revolves around the making of the Mehrangarh Fort.

Apparently before the King decided to build his capital at this hilltop, it used to be a residing place of a certain Sage, who did not wish to move even after multiple requests by the King. As a result, he was forced to leave the hilltop by the King's troop. He left, but cursed the kingdom will forever face water scarcity and drought. To avert this curse, the Chamunda Mata Temple was set up.

Another marvelous temple at Jodhpur is the Mahamandir Temple. The beautiful temple is a Shaivite temple and is supported by 84 intricately carved pillars. The temple is a popular site for tourists when they visit Jodhpur due to its exquisite architecture and is a place you must visit on your trip to the city.

At the Osian village, near the city of Jodhpur are the beautiful temples of Osian. The village houses a number of Jain and Hindu temples, and is therefore also called the 'Khajuraho of Rajasthan' due to the presence of the many temples. The temples which are known primarily include the Surya Temple, Harihara Temple, Sachiya Mata Temple and Mahavira Jain Temple.

A fascinating temple near Jodhpur that is truly one of a kind is the Om Banna Temple or the Bullet Baba Temple. The Temple is located on the NH 62 on the Pali-Jodhpur Highway and is dedicated to a young man called Om Singh Rathore who passed away at the site due to a bike accident.

The bullet bike of Om Banna is at the temple and is kept in a glass case, which is worshiped by the people along with the tree which the bike crashed into. The local people as well as travelers stop by and pray to Om Banna for a safe journey. The peculiar temple is a place that you should include in your itinerary to Jodhpur.

The best travel routes for Rajasthan

There are many amazing routes you can explore in Rajasthan, but we have chosen the two best ones for you. Yes, Agra is not located in Rajasthan, but we are still including it in these routes because we know you don’t want to miss the Taj Mahal on a trip to India.

Route 1: The Golden Triangle

Delhi – Agra – Jaipur – Jodhpur – Udaipur

The classic Golden Triangle route takes you through some of the best places in North India and Rajasthan. If you have two weeks to take in the essence of India, this is the ideal route for you. This route has some of the most-visited tourist attractions, so be prepared for heavy crowds. But don’t worry, we can book some lovely accommodations for you that can be your peaceful escape. On this route, you can look forward to seeing the Taj Mahal, Red Fort in Delhi, and some incredible forts and palaces, such as the Amer Fort and the Hawa Mahal.

Route 2: New Perspectives in Rajasthan

Delhi – Agra – Bharatpur – Jaipur – Bundi – Ranakpur – Udaipur

If you want to take the road less travelled, this is the route for you. This route also has some fantastic palaces and temples, perhaps on a smaller scale, but also with fewer tourists. A good example of this is the marble temples in Ranakpur on the way to Udaipur.

There are many other routes for a great Rajasthan trip as well, such as the desert city of Jaisalmer, Pushkar and its camel fair, and more. At India Someday, we tailor your trips according to your preferences. So contact us and we will plan the perfect trip for you.

Best time to travel to Rajasthan

November to February is considered the best time to visit Rajasthan, as well as India in general. The sunny skies and pleasant climate make it a good time to explore the state. However, this is peak tourist season for Rajasthan, so make sure you book your tickets and accommodations well in advance to get the best offers. Our insider tip is to visit Rajasthan towards the end of the monsoon season, i.e. August and September. Compared to other parts of India, Rajasthan receives significantly less rainfall, but the climate is pleasant, the landscape is blooming, and the crowds of tourists are much smaller.

Best Palace Hotels of Rajasthan

As we said, if ancient temples and majestic palaces fascinate you, a trip to Rajasthan is worth it. But what’s better than visiting a palace? That’s right – staying in one! In Rajasthan, you will find many luxurious accommodations in mansions and palaces. In Udaipur, the Lake Palace is a private hotel on an island where the legendary James Bond film Octopussy was shot! For a more personal experience, Castle Bera is an actual palace converted into a homestay. We know of many other such amazing accommodations in Rajasthan – get in touch with us!

Best Activities in Rajasthan

If you have had your fill of forts and palaces and want to do something different, there are many other exciting activities to do in Rajasthan.

Tiger Safari in Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is one of the best places in the world to see the royal Bengal tiger in all its glory. The national park is a forest with many clearings, which increases the chances of spotting a tiger. The park is closed during the monsoon season from June to October.

Overnight stay in the desert

The journey to Jaisalmer is quite long, but the trip is absolutely worth it. Take a night train to the charming old town of Jaisalmer on the fringes of the Thar Desert. You can explore the desert with a camel or a jeep and a guide, or better yet, spend the night in the desert under the stars – a truly surreal experience!

Ziplining in Jodhpur

If you want an adrenaline rush, try the Flying Fox in Jodhpur. This zipline offers a unique backdrop: the historic Mehrangarh fort and the panoramic view of the Blue City!

Best festivals to experience in Rajasthan

Just like the rest of India, there are countless festivals celebrated in Rajasthan. Try to plan your Rajasthan trip around at least one festival. The two most important festivals in India are best celebrated in Rajasthan – Diwali and Holi. Diwali, the festival of lights, takes place on the full moon in October or November, while Holi, the festival of colors, is celebrated in March. Another popular festival in Rajasthan is the Pushkar Camel Fair, which coincides with the Hindu festival Kartik Purnima in October or November. We will always inform you about these or any other local festivals during your trip planning. We recommend booking a homestay during festivals so that you can experience the festivals in the most authentic way.

Pushkar Rajasthan Camel Fair October November

Rajasthan is incredibly popular among travelers, and with good reason. The impressive ancient architecture, the beautiful landscape, warm and welcoming people, and unforgettable experiences make Rajasthan a very special destination in India.

So if the diversity of Rajasthan is calling out to you, or if you want to feel like you are a part of the 1001 Arabian Nights fairy tales, reach out to us, and we will help you plan your perfect trip to Rajasthan in India!
