Sing along to cherished favorites, sway to the rhythm of the band's improvisations, and soak up the magic of this unforgettable show, but first, click the "GET TICKETS" button to secure your spot because to experience all of this magic, you don't have much time. Passes are flying off the shelf faster than lightning, so be a hero and secure yours before someone else beats you to it.

Dave Matthews Band are still busy dusting themselves off, having just completed an insane 14 Country tour around Europe and the UK. But, that doesn't mean they intend to take a break, nor slow down, no! The band's annual Summer road trip across the good old United States kicks off in Florida on May 22nd, and runs right through to the big finale, over the July Labor Day Weekend, right here at The Gorge in Washington. Counting a staggering 70 sold-out shows at the venue, this place holds a special place in the hearts of the band, and is undoubtably the one show you have to witness!

Continuing their long held belief that live concert touring can, and one day will, be sustainable, DMB have teamed up with Live Nation for their "On The Road To Zero Waste" initiative. A champagne to keep the party going while keeping the footprint as small as possible.

Having sold an insane 25 million concert tickets since their debut, Dave Matthews Band currently holds the distinction of being the second-biggest concert ticket seller in history, along with a staggering 38 million CDs and DVDs combined, they certainly fall in with the great bands out right now. If that is not enough for you, then check out the band's latest new music, "Walk Around The Moon." The album is already receiving praise from all directions. Pitchfork describes it as "tight-knit and tender," while the Associated Press is diggin' the variety, from "small and intimate" to "brassy and political." They even highlight standout tracks like, "Break Free," "The Monsters," and the groove filled "The Only Thing."

Believe me, these seasoned rockers still know how to throw a party, and will have you dancing on the green around the stage all night long. And let's not forget, with a band of this stature, every performance is an opportunity to witness history in the making. So grab your tie-dye shirts, dust, off your sandals and prepare yourself for one more Labor Day weekend at The Gorge with the one and only, Dave Matthews Band! Don't miss out, secure your tickets and now!

Dave Matthews Band brings the hits, along with some new songs to Star Lake show

Tribune-Review

Dave Matthews Band returned to The Pavilion at Star Lake for its mostly annual trip on Friday night.

The band is currently touring in support of their new album, “Walk Around the Moon,” which was released in May. It’s the band’s first studio album since 2018.

“The band is really gelled right now,” singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews said in an interview in May. “We’re all, at least for now, shining favorable lights on each other and laughing a lot and enjoying making music together.”

To the nearly 14,000 fans delight, the band opened with the always popular #41 and continued through the 21 song set playing a mix of covers (Led Zepplin’s Fool In The Rain, The Beatles’ I Want You (She’s So Heavy), and Brick House by The Commodores), fan favorites like Dancing Nancies, Grey Street, Granny and What Would You Say and four songs from their new album (Walk Around The Moon, Madman’s Eyes, After Everything and Monsters). The complete setlist is below.

During the show, Matthews mentioned how much he loved Pittsburgh and how it was full of tough love.

The band last performed at Star Lake in August 2021. Dave Matthews performed at a rally for then-U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman last October at Stage AE on the North Shore.

They closed the night with their rendition of Bob Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower, complete with a Stairway to Heaven outro. This show was also streamed live on the DMB Channel on Sirius XM radio as part of their Dave Matthews Band Friday Night Concert Series.

Dave Matthews Band (DMB) are an American rock and jazz band, who formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, America in 1991. The band has had numerous band members, playing a variety of jazz instruments.

The band consists of, founder of the band, singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews, bass guitarist Stefan Lessard, drummer, Carter Beauford and saxophonist Jeff Coffin.

However, the band is ever growing and later Boyd Tinsley joined as a violinist, with Rashawn Ross and Tim Reynolds also becoming full-time touring members of Dave Matthews Band.

Dave Matthews Band’s first public performance was in 1991 was on a rooftop warehouse in Charlottesville, America.

Interestingly, the name of the band comes after the members simply could not decide on a suitable name.

DMB finally released their first EP, named Recently, in 1994. The album consisted of five records which were taken from their shows which they had performed at venue, The Birchmere, in Alexandria, Virginia.

Later that year the band went on to successfully release their second album, named creatively to match their style of music, "Under the Table and Dreaming". The band made the album in tribute to Matthews's sister and dedicated it in memory of her after she was killed by her husband that year.

The band have gone to record a further seven studio albums with great success. They established their own charity BAMA Works Fund which is claimed to have raised over eight and a half million dollars to disadvantaged youths, the disabled, environmental charitites, and arts and humanities appeals in the city of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Live reviews

Saw DMB locally 4 years ago in different venue, had no idea this would be so much better! The Greek Theater was incredible for a DMB concert with great acoustics...you could hear the crowd sing along, but not distractingly so....you could still here Dave and crew just fine. Not too loud or soft, and I was in the first row on the upper grass area (next time get there earlier for a cement seat!). The set list started with several acoustic numbers that were thoroughly enjoyable...starting with a nice version of Stay or Leave, followed by a personal favorite Satellite, and finishing up with a terrific version of Ants Marching (outstanding violin solo!). After what seemed like a 30+ minute break, the band came out and rocked the joint, and my highlight was the three backup singers who sounded like those on the Big Whiskey studio album who added incredible depth to Everyday, You & Me, Can't Stop, and the one that got everyone shaking, Burning Down the House. An Encore of The Space Between, Granny, Pantala Naga Pama (pretty but oh so short), and finally Rapunzel rounded out the evening. Counting the break the show finished a little before 11 and a great time was had by all, including Dave and the band, who looked like they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Lots of banter with the crowd, which was missing from the show 4 years ago but on many live recordings. Like listening to your favorite bar band grow up but playing their own classics and with 8500+ of your best friends! Wish I was going back for more tonight!

When I listened DMB for the first time, I was 15. They were already big in the US and they were only making tours there.

Few years back, I heard, too late, that they've made an European tour.

This year, I couldn't miss it for the world.

And that was amazing.

It could have last 2 more hours that it already did, I couldn't have been happier.

The power they all release in live version, we all know them, because there is a lot of live album : the 10 minutes songs, the crazy solos, the bizarre humour of Dave Matthews...

Still, this show will remain in my soul for a while.

I was astonish by the power that each of the member give on stage.

I was dazzled by the show-light that couldn't go better with the whole concert.

If I could, I would go again tonight.... There are songs that they could not play, and might play the next day.

If you like them, just go for the ride, and sing along!

Dave Matthew's Band is one of the best bands I have ever seen live. Not only do they have the ability to reproduce the amazingly insane musical arrangements they do on their records but they are also able to free jam as they go. Everything gets even more insanely wonderful showing every individual talent that add musicality to this brilliant band. Dave is a charismatic dude and cutely shy (what makes his interactions with audience awkwardly wonderful). The members of the band also have their interaction moments when they almost invite the audience to be part of their creative process. As part of the audience, I've always felt part of the concert since every gig is unique, every concert has its on set list and they pretty much perform as a response to that specific crowd. No concert is the same...

The July 1st2018 show at Summerfest was one to remember!

The setlist was a perfect blend of old tunes and songs from the new album "Come Tomorrow." Samurai Cop moved me to tears - the overwhelming passion from the band reached everyone at the amphitheater.

Though I prefer larger venues set in the country, the vibe at this amphitheater was soaked with easy going fans who were clearly there to enjoy the show.

Here on Out was by far my favorite song of the night, I just wish the rest of the crowd would have been quieter so I could enjoy it more.

This was my 46th DMB show and will definitely remember it forever.

The biggest letdown was the fact that the band did not open for themselves acoustically. Other than that, a solid A- performance!!

My husband and I go to every Dave Matthews Band performance because we love this band, especially because it is at Mansfield Xfinity Center. We love the open airy smaller arena.

The only thing I have to say that could be much better was the acoustics. Usually the band is very enjoyable & you can hear what the singer(s) are saying but this time the noise from the Acoustics over road the lyrics. We had center VIP box seats. I know since I last saw the DMB,

they added this light show. It was kind of blinding & I thought I liked it better when it wasn't so loud & theatrical.

They do not need all that! They are great without any other distractions. The band is FANTASTIC!

Oh Dave Matthews, how I love you! What a fantastic show!

The show started with an acoustic set with Dave & Tim Reynolds by themselves performing Bartender. They continued the set with another 8 songs including Satellite, Tripping Billies, and Two Step. After a brief intermission, they began the electric set. The set was 14 songs which included my favorite cover of all time Sledgehammer! It was 2 hours of just pure awesomeness from DMB. Overall, it was a fantastic setlist. It was my third show. I have seen him twice at the Cruzan Amphitheater in West Palm Beach before this show. Definitely a different experience indoors, but SO glad I went.

It was an ok concert. Mainly I would give it that review due to the sound system. You could not understand a word he was saying. We left before the end because everyone stood up ALL night and I really got fed up with the butt view. As we reached the parking lot you could hear the music much better. Interesting.

We pay for seats yet 99% don't sit in them, so the rest are miserable. The sound system is so bad that you can hear it better in the parkiung lot. Next time I'll skip paying for the seat and sit in my car for a more enjoyable show!

The band was great and enthusiastic and generous. As always the sound system at the Molson in Toronto is blarey.

HOWEVER they made this event a will call only on ticketmaster. 20,000 people. Uh, huh.

So we got there an hour early. Waited in line for two hours for tickets we'd already purchased and missed a half hour of the show. AND when we went in there were still thousand of people waiting in the box office line. Eight attendants.

Fortunately for Counting Crows we already have our tickets.

Dave is always great, but the people around having their own conversations makes for a horrible time. Had lawn seating with people up and down through your blanket. Wished the event center had more paths so this would limit the problem. Do not seat in the center. The sounds is horrible. Noticed as I was leaving the sound on the side is much clearer and better. Wished I would have known this. Of the 20 concerts I've seen of Dave, my least favorite overall experience; but again the band is always great.

I've seen DMB more than 25 times. This was the second worst show. Thought I would like the double set format. Then saw that it just allowed for more new songs which are not nearly as strong as their older stuff. I understand playing some new stuff, but at least 35-40% of the show was me trying to stay awake, hoping for their usual, strong encore. That was a bigger letdown than the rest of the earlier show. Set list was the weakest I've seen.

20 years after that disgusting Dave Matthews Band incident, victims now can laugh about it

Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times

Tracy Dangott expects a deluge of snarky texts from friends on Thursday.

The day — Aug. 8, to be exact — will mark the 20th anniversary of what’s popularly known as The Dave Matthews Band Incident.

On that sunny Sunday afternoon in 2004, a bus driver for the rock group passed over the Chicago River and discharged 800 pounds of liquid waste from the vehicle’s septic tank that passed through the steel grating of the Kinzie Street Bridge and showered dozens of passengers who were enjoying an architectural boat cruise.

Dangott and his then-wife and two friends were on the part of the boat that got it the worst.

He was 29, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and had a motorcycle helmet in his lap that acted like a soup bowl.

“It’s one of those things that’s had more importance in the cultural zeitgeist than it possibly should. What the hell? Why are we talking about this 20 years later?”

Dangott, who works in the financial industry, raised his voice to ask a few of his younger colleagues whose desks are outside his office: “Have you heard of The Dave Matthews Band Incident?”

A few seconds go by.

“Yeah, they’ve heard of it ... and now they’re reenacting it,” he said. The bit of theater consisted of hands in air, stunned looks on faces.

The following exchange went like this: “You saw it happen?” “I was on the boat.” “Did you get hit?” “Very much so.”

Dangott said he washed his motorcycle helmet out with a hose when the boat got back to the dock near Michigan Avenue. He then put it on his head and zoomed back to his Lake View home on his Kawasaki. His spouse, who also got doused, clung to his waist. He called his doctor, who suggested they get hepatitis shots the next day.

Chicago's Little Lady tour boat passes under a downtown bridge recently with a few passengers on its top deck. It was packed the day it was splashed by the contents of the septic tank of a Dave Matthews Band tour bus on Aug. 8, 2004.

Chicago’s Little Lady tour boat passes under a downtown bridge recently with a few passengers on its top deck. It was packed the day it was splashed by the contents of the septic tank of a Dave Matthews Band tour bus on Aug. 8, 2004.

Mitch Dudek/Sun-Times

“It was the worst experience,” he said with a laugh.

Dangott said he still has the T-shirt his boss bought for him shortly after the incident. A Dave Matthews Band tour bus on the front, dates and cities of each show from that tour on the back.

The episode is really funny . . . in hindsight.

“It took me a good solid year before I could laugh at it. I was just angry and disgusted for the first six months,” said Dangott, who expects a flood of the usual texts from friends on the anniversary of the incident. They usually consist of a picture of a plaque someone placed on the bridge commemorating the incident.

Nancy Todor, who was sitting next to Dangott, also expects a flood of text messages this week reading “Happy poopiversary!”

She’s been laughing at the moment since it happened.

“I have a twisted sense of humor, so at the same time that I was crying and throwing up, I was laughing, too, because you can’t make this s--- up, pardon the pun,” she said.

“All I remember is looking and seeing a bus and then a rust-colored waterfall,” said Todor, who worked in the financial industry back then but has since become a grade school teacher in the western suburbs. “I have a very strong gag reflex. I avoid outhouses like the plague.”

Thankfully, a pal who also got splashed had a convertible and gave her a lift to her home in Elmhurst with the top down. She took a two-hour shower, called lots of friends and family to tell them what happened, then went to dinner at Mon Ami Gabi in Oak Brook and told the wait staff, too.

“I just had to get it out of me; I told everyone,” she said.

She cut her long wavy hair short the next day.

It took years before Sonja Lund, who was 24 and the captain aboard Chicago’s Little Lady that day, could laugh about it.

Images that come to her mind from that day are a baby who wouldn’t stop crying and an old lady with hair matted to her head.

“When it became clear what I needed to do, I hammered down on the throttle and we just blasted back to the dock,” said Lund, noting that she broke the no-wake rule on the river and may have bounced some smaller boats around a bit and tipped a kayaker or two.

“I told the bartender to open the bar and give people anything they wanted — a shot of whiskey, bottle of water — just give it to them, anything to make them more comfortable and calm people down,” she recalled, emphasizing her concern at the time that people might jump from the boat in disgust. (No one did.)

“It was a few years before I could take it a little less seriously. It was just terribly upsetting, and I was like ‘Why is everyone laughing? It’s not funny. It’s terrible.’ ”

Her evolution is clear as she says the last two sentences with a tinge of laughter.

She hopes everyone on the boat has skewed toward humor over time.

Stefan Wohl, the bus driver for the Dave Matthews Band, arrives to turn himself in to police in 2005.

Stefan Wohl, the bus driver for the Dave Matthews Band, arrives to turn himself in to police in 2005.

Sun-Times file

Bus driver Stefan Wohl, who was alone as he was headed east to the Peninsula Hotel, was charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct and discharging contaminants to cause water pollution. He pleaded guilty, was ordered to pay the Friends of the Chicago River $10,000 and perform 150 hours community service in the community in Texas where he was from.

The Dave Matthews Band initially backed the driver, who denied dumping the waste before owning up to it. The band went so far as to offer up DNA samples to investigators. Video evidence that police tracked down from security cameras at the nearby East Bank Club left no doubt who was at fault.

A number of lawsuits were filed, including by several passengers and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who ultimately dropped the suit in exchange for the band’s agreeing to donate $200,000 to state environmental programs.

The band also donated $50,000 each to Friends of the Chicago River and the Chicago Park District, and the city raised its fines for illegal dumping.

Margaret Frisbie, executive director Friends of the Chicago River, said she tried to reach out to the band through an intermediary to see if Dave Matthews would be willing to use the 20th anniversary to help the environment.

She wanted to see if Matthews would donate a minute of his time in the form of a Zoom call that would be auctioned off at the nonprofit’s annual Big Fish Ball, or record a short video to be played at the gala.

“The incident is woven into the city’s pop culture fabric, and the anniversary seemed like an opportunity to emphasize that the world has to protect our natural resources, but it didn’t work out,” Frisbie said of the effort.

The Chicago Architecture Center, which continues to host river tours along with Chicago’s Little Lady operator Chicago’s First Lady, provided a joint statement on the anniversary that read in part:

“There is certainly no joy in reliving the 2004 event that traumatized our passengers and crew. ... We choose to not let what took place that day diminish our contributions in showcasing the city we love with the world.

The Dave Matthews Band didn’t return a message seeking comment.

Dave Matthews Band's 15 Best Songs Ranked

As the band enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we're wading through the shit and counting down the best of their 30-year discography

dave matthews band tour pittsburgh

BY Alex Hudson Published Aug 8, 2024

A few years ago, Dave Matthews Band had a moment where they very nearly became cool. Their song "Crash into Me" was prominently featured in 2017's indie hit Lady Bird , and singer-songwriter Riley Walker gave the lost album The Lillywhite Sessions a jazzy, freaky makeover. It seemed like DMB might be going the way of mom jeans and Dungeons and Dragons , as nostalgia threatened to give them a prestige they never had in their heyday.

It never quite took, however. Since then, they've more or less remained exactly what they were before: a frat rock jam band with a devoted following, playing to a huge audience without making any significant impact on mainstream culture. They continue to be a big touring act, but 2023's Walk Around the Moon marked the first time since 1996 that they released a studio album without topping the Billboard 200 (it peaked at No. 5).

DMB (or simply "Dave," as devoted followers are likely to refer to the band) unequivocally have a "big three" albums, with a run of '90s records that capture both their artistic and cultural pinnacle. Most of this list comes from that golden period.

After fumbling their fourth studio album — a frustrating incident in which they recorded a beautiful album, scrapped it, released a much worse album, and then attempted to re-record the earlier album but with inferior versions — their career has been a more mixed bag. They lost a couple of core members, as saxophonist LeRoi Moore died following an ATV accident in 2008 and violinist Boyd Tinsley left the group in 2018 amid an accusation of sexual harassment. These days, co-founders Matthews, drummer Carter Beauford and bassist Stefan Lessard are joined by an expanded lineup of backing players, as they dependably retain their sound by connecting the dots between folk rock, funky jazz and jam band improvisation.

People who don't know the band's music might have heard of the most embarrassing moment in their career: the time their tour bus driver emptied 800 pounds of human waste into the Chicago River, where it landed on a sightseeing boat, on August 8, 2004. The incident evidently wasn't their fault — the driver alone pleaded guilty — but the band remain forever associated with it. I recently went to Chicago with some non-DMB-listening friends, and they were all keen to include the "DMB poop bridge" on our sightseeing tour. (It's the same bridge where a prominent scene from High Fidelity was filmed a few years earlier. Maybe the driver simply wasn't a John Cusack fan?) There's even a documentary in the works about The Crappening , as it's being referred to .

To mark the 20th anniversary of that, uh, stain on their legacy, as well as their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , we're focusing on the positive by counting down their finest work. Any DMB fan knows that the band's best work often comes out during shows, and while we'll be focusing on the songs themselves and not on any specific live performances, the material's on-stage legacy has been taken into consideration.

Here are Dave Matthews Band's 15 best songs.

15. "Grey Street" Busted Stuff (2002)

Of all the songs from the leaked Lillywhite Sessions that DMB re-recorded for 2002's Busted Stuff , "Grey Street" is perhaps the only one that turned out better, with an arrangement that's basically identical and some lyrical punch-ups from Matthews. The lyrics describe the colourlessness of battling depression, but the vibrant arrangement is anything but, punctuating Matthews's melodic chord changes with big band flair.

14. "Lie in Our Graves" Crash (1996)

"Lie in Our Graves" is the first of several songs on this list that are explicitly carpe diem anthems — a lyrical well that Matthews keeps on coming back to for many of his best moments. This is a rare example of a jam that actually sounds better in the studio than on stage, with the ambient sound of the group hanging out and playing ping-pong beautifully contributing to the song's feel-good celebration of living life to the fullest.

13. "Louisiana Bayou" Stand Up (2005)

I'm rare among DMB fans in that I love 2005's Stand Up — an album that embraces synthetic pop textures in ways that are far stranger, messier and more interesting than 2001's Everyday . Clavinet riff aside, "Louisiana Bayou" sounds more or less like a traditional DMB funk jam, with Matthews punctuating its relentless groove with playful octave jumps: "Down by the ba-YOU."

12. "Granny" Under the Table and Dreaming (Expanded Edition) (1994)

DMB envisioned "Granny" as their debut single, but in the end they left it off their debut album entirely. Both instincts were wrong. The song's start-stop guitar riff, which is largely unaccompanied until the drums finally enter at the 2:43 mark, would make for an absolutely terrible radio single. And yet the "Love! Baby!" hook is one of the band's most joyful, infectious refrains, so it's strange that this live staple didn't get a proper studio release until the deluxe version of Under the Table and Dreaming in 2014.

11. "Don't Drink the Water" Before These Crowded Streets (1998)

Leave it to DMB to pick a one-chord drone about genocide as an album's lead single. With wacka-wacka wah guitar from Tim Reynolds and banjo from Béla Fleck, plus eerie howls from backing vocalist Alanis Morissette, it's a haunting, hypnotic backdrop for Matthews's account of the Europeans' aggression toward Indigenous people in North America. He sings from the perspective of the settler, using chillingly matter-of-language before the growling finale about "greedy need" and "frenzied feeding."

10. "Warehouse" Under the Table and Dreaming (1998)

Drawing out what seems to be an extended metaphor for the human body, the spooky "Warehouse" features a relentless guitar groove that crawls creepily around the fretboard before suddenly flourishing into unexpectedly sweet hooks: a jaunty chorus, followed by a tropically sunny post-chorus section. By the time it all builds to an aching sax solo and a mortality-exploring outro about angels and "my heart's numbered beats," Matthews finds the emotional payoff for his high-flown metaphor.

9. "Pig" Before These Crowded Streets (1998)

A chintzy violin gets "Pig" off to a rinky-dink start that changes at the drop of a hat, as a transcendent hook sweeps the song skyward and Matthews sings some of his most inspiring carpe diem lyrics ever: "I'm saying open up / And let the rain come pouring in / Wash out this tired notion / That the best is yet to come / But while you're dancing on the ground / Don't think of when you're gone."

8. "Grace Is Gone" Busted Stuff (2002)

Sigh. The fucking Lillywhite Sessions ! DMB made one of their best-ever recordings with the original version of "Grace Is Gone," a harrowing country ballad about drinking to remember, and then drinking to forget. They sped it up and sapped the hurt out of it for the far-inferior Busted Stuff version — but the song still remains as the most impeccably bummed-out relic of their scrapped 1999–2000 sessions.

7. "Idea of You" Come Tomorrow (2018)

"Idea of You" is a poignant epilogue for the original version of the band, as it dates back to the Stand Up era and features archival performances from LeRoi Moore and Boyd Tinsley. Moore in particular sounds incredible, playing a gorgeous counter-melody in the chorus before taking the spotlight during a sublime sax break. It's as good as anything he recorded during the band's heyday — one last posthumous moment of magic from the classic lineup.

6. "#41" Crash (1996)

An enduring fan favourite and concert staple, "#41" overcomes its slightly clumsy lyrics — vague non-sequiturs and a clumsy rain/tears metaphor — with pure instrumental euphoria. In lieu of a proper chorus, Tinsley and Moore lock into a meditative ostinato, giving way to a beautiful series of solos on violin, flute and sax that takes up the back half of the near-seven-minute album cut (which is often way, way longer live). There's debate over whether DMB qualify as a jam band or not; this song is the best argument to suggest that they are.

5. "Two Step" Crash (1996)

A urgent two-step rhythm chug-a-lugs like a runaway train as DMB hammer on a minor chord, setting a spooky mood for some particularly horny come-ons from Matthews ("You laid down to give to me just what I'm seeking"). It's one of the jammiest live staples in the band's catalogue, with urgent passages that set up tension for the joyful release of the chorus and its characteristic seize-the-day sloganeering: "Celebrate we will / Because life is short but sweet for certain."

4. "Crush" Before These Crowded Streets (1998)

Forget "Crash into Me," because "Crush" is the truly great collision-related love song in DMB's catalogue. The band have lots of eight-minute songs, but "Crush" is a rarity in that its length mostly doesn't come from jamming, but rather from the sprawling intricacy of the songwriting. Hooks pile upon hooks, with Matthews conveying the intensity of love every time the chorus swoops up to a new climax.

3. "The Best of What's Around" Under the Table and Dreaming (1998)

With the first song from their first studio album, Dave Matthews Band completely nailed the wide-eyed optimism that would become their trademark: a charming and slightly dopey philosophical outlook that was embraced by the collegiate party scene, making DMB synonymous with frat bros during the '90s and early '00s. The chorus of "The Best of What's Around" has a shimmering magic to it, with bluesy breakdowns paying off in a soaring "hey la" singalong.

2. "Ants Marching" Under the Table and Dreaming (1998)

The most-played song in the band's catalogue begins with a bubblegum two-chord motif and some very "we live in a society" lyrics about how hectic modern life is. But the simplicity of this opening section pays off with impeccable pacing later on: a chorus that Matthews initially sings over the verse riff before switching to a minor chord for subsequent repetitions, a glorious drop of Under the Table and Dreaming 's title lyric, and a two-part bridge featuring some pseudo-rapping. After a violin hoedown, LeRoi Moore delivers a drop-dead gorgeous solo, which is up there with "Baker Street" and "Careless Whisper" as popular music's ultimate sax jam; the four bars from 3:55 to 4:05 are the best 10 seconds of music DMB have ever made.

1. "Tripping Billies" Crash (1996)

DMB have always specialized in carpe diem anthems, but there's an undercurrent of morbidity to even their most celebratory songs. That's particularly true of "Tripping Billies" and its refrain of "Eat, drink and be merry / For tomorrow we die." With a hyperactive BPM, giddy melodies and a chorus like a wall decal from HomeSense, it initially scans as a carefree good time — but dig a little deeper and the sinister side emerges: "Bumblebees were stinging us / I was soon to be crazy," Matthews yelps, seemingly alluding to the sharp jab of a heroin needle. By the time the last of Tinsley's three sawing fiddle solos achieves liftoff, the song achieves a manic, frenzied energy, like the bulging-eyed guy at a party who goes a bit too hard and starts freaking everybody out.
