Hawaiian Islands cruise with more value
Why settle for seeing just one island on a Hawaii resort-based vacation when you can cruise in style and explore multiple island jewels? Sailing with Princess is a far better vacation value and you’ll visit popular Hawaiian islands — Oahu , Kauai and the Big Island ( Hilo and Kona ) — without all the time-consuming hassle of island hopping by plane. From enriching Discovery and Animal Planet shore excursions to our immersive "Aloha Spirit" program onboard, you'll discover each island's unique charm — and fall in love with Hawaii's enchanting beauty.
Oahu (Honolulu)
The most populous of the Hawaiian islands, bustling Oahu offers attractions for visitors of all ages. Our sailings feature a special late night departure from Oahu, so you can spend a full day seeing the sights, then revel in Honolulu's exciting nightlife. From iconic Waikiki Beach to the enormous Ala Moana Shopping Center to the glorious Iolani Palace and poignant Pearl Harbor memorials, there’s certainly no shortage of things to do in "The Big Pineapple" of Hawaii!
Once the favorite playground of Hawaiian royalty, great warrior King Kamehameha chose to make Maui's Lahaina his capital after uniting the Hawaiian islands. Explore breathtaking Haleakala National Park which boasts diverse volcanic and rainforest landscapes, plus a 10,000-foot-tall dormant volcano. Or sail out onto the scenic waters off Maui’s sun-kissed shores and witness in awe as humpback whales frolic about.
When it comes to Kauai , good things come in small packages. Despite being the smallest of the four main islands, Kauai is home to the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" Waimea Canyon, the lush Fern Grotto framed by Wailua River and so much more. The stunning Na Pali Coast has served as the backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters, such as Jurassic Park and King Kong. With endless emerald landscapes, Kauai truly lives up to its nickname of "The Garden Island".
Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian islands combined, the Big Island ( Hilo and Kona ) is a paradise of black-sand beaches, tropical rainforests and even snow-capped peaks at the soaring Mauna Kea summit. Feel the spiritual "mana" on a shore excursion in Waipi'o Valley, once the meeting place for Hawaiian kings and fabled to contain an otherworldly gate. At the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, behold extraordinary lava landscapes and two of the world’s most active volcanoes.

You’ll see pounding surf, limpid lagoons, and sometimes a snowy cap on the highest mountains. Explore bamboo forests and plunging gorges. At night, look up at the astonishing array of stars.
Unique Culture
Hawaiian people feel a deep connection to nature and embrace the spirit of Aloha, which means living in harmony with nature and the people around you. Beliefs are expressed through beautiful chants, music, graceful hula, and art. Natural phenomena are understood as the work of gods and goddesses, and many locations and animals are regarded as sacred.

Top Hawaii FAQs
What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?
The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.
How long does a typical cruise last?
Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.
What are the main ports of call?
The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.
What should I pack?
Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.
Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.
Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.
Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.
The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.
Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?
Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.
Do I need a passport?
For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.
If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.
Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.
What kind of activities and excursions are available?
Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.
Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

Hawaii cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do
Hawaii and cruising seem like a match made in heaven. You can experience all the beaches, water sports, lush scenic areas and Polynesian culture without having to settle for just one island — or deal with the hassle of flying between them.
In addition, you get a convenient home base to leave your stuff, enjoy evening entertainment without a drive and linger over dinner without worrying how much the bill will come to.
However, it's not all paradise in the Hawaii cruise world because itineraries are limited. Why? U.S. government regulations prohibit foreign-flagged ships from sailing between U.S. ports without visiting a foreign port.
Because most cruise ships are flagged in another country, they cannot offer interisland cruises. Only two lines currently offer those. The rest must sail long cruises at least one-way, if not round-trip, from the west coast of North America.
If a Hawaii cruise sounds like the perfect getaway, you'll want to read up on which lines offer which types of itineraries, as well as which islands and ports you must visit.
Here, we've gathered all the information you need to know to choose the perfect Aloha State sailing for your travel style, budget and allotted vacation time.
Why cruise to Hawaii?
I probably don't need to convince anyone that Hawaii is an amazing vacation destination. It has everything — gorgeous beaches, fabulous snorkeling and diving spots, scenic hiking trails, fascinating local culture and history, delicious cuisine, renowned resorts and golf courses, and plentiful waterfalls and rainbows.
Why should you cruise instead of booking a hotel or resort stay on land? The main reason is to sample more islands.
Most travelers stick to one, possibly two islands, during a Hawaii vacation. If you want to sample the highlights of several islands, from Volcanoes National Park near Hilo, Hawaii, to Kauai's Waimea Canyon and Napali Coast, it's much simpler to do that from a cruise ship.
Additionally, lodging prices in Hawaii can be high due to its popularity as a vacation destination. Restaurants are also more expensive than on the mainland because many staples have to be shipped in from afar.
On a cruise, you're free to sample Hawaiian cuisine during your time in port but can take as many meals as you want on board, many of which are already covered in your cruise fare.
When do cruises go to Hawaii?
You can sail to Hawaii year-round, but the itinerary options vary based on the month you choose. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only major cruise line to offer year-round, weeklong cruises.
If you're looking for a longer itinerary, sailing round-trip from the west coast of North America, or a small-ship adventure cruise, you'll have the biggest selection of cruises between mid-September and April.
The beginning and end of the Alaska season in the spring and fall is when you'll find one-way repositioning cruises either between Hawaii and Vancouver, British Columbia, or Seattle, or from the Pacific Northwest all the way to the South Pacific, stopping in Hawaii along the way.
The summer offers the fewest Hawaii cruise options.

Best Hawaii itineraries
Cruises to Hawaii fall into three categories: weeklong interisland cruises, round-trip cruises sailing to/from the West Coast and one-way repositioning cruises.
The best cruise for you depends on how much vacation time you have, how many islands you want to visit, whether you're looking for overnight port stays and how you feel about multiple sea days in a row.
Interisland cruises
The best Hawaii itinerary, in my opinion, is Norwegian Cruise Line's seven-night round-trip Honolulu sailings on Pride of America. The U.S.-flagged ship is the only big ship able to sail interisland itineraries without calling on a foreign port.
The itinerary features two-day overnight visits to Maui and Kauai and stops in both Kona and Hilo on the Big Island, as well as scenic cruising along Kauai's famed Napali Coast. It's easy to book pre- or post-cruise stays in Honolulu to explore places like Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head Crater and Pearl Harbor, or you can book an NCL-organized cruisetour to combine the weeklong cruise with a three-night land tour.
For a completely different interisland cruise, UnCruise Adventures offers a more off-the-beaten-path, adventure-focused sailing on the 36-passenger Safari Explorer.
It also visits Maui, Hawaii, and the smaller islands of Lanai and Molokai. Expect lots of water sports and nature-based outings, and daily plans can change due to the weather or a whale sighting. These expedition cruises run from November to April.
Related: The best ways to get to Hawaii using points and miles
Round-trip Hawaii cruises from the West Coast
Most of the major cruise lines offering seasonal Hawaii cruises — such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Holland America — offer 14- to 18-night round-trip itineraries from West Coast ports such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and San Francisco in California; Seattle; and Vancouver. These sailings run from the fall into the spring. Some lines offer just a few round trips, while others offer months of Hawaii cruises.
The itineraries all follow a similar pattern: a four-day Pacific Ocean crossing, daily port stops in three or four Hawaii ports (occasionally with an overnight), another five days at sea and then a stop in Ensenada, Mexico, on the way home. If you're sailing from Vancouver, expect five days for the crossing and no visit to Mexico.
You might find some longer grand voyages sailing round-trip from North America to Hawaii, plus other South Pacific destinations. For example, Holland America offers some epic 24- to 51-night cruises round-trip from San Diego.
These Hawaii cruises are best for retirees, who have the time to enjoy leisurely ocean crossings on either end of the trip.
Repositioning cruises
The final type of Hawaii cruise is the one-way repositioning sailing, typically offered when ships are heading to or leaving Alaska. The cruise line schedules these sailings to swing by Hawaii on their way to the South Pacific or Australia, or perhaps before the ship begins Mexico cruises from southern California or transits the Panama Canal to the Atlantic.
The shorter options, such as the eight- to 13-night Hawaii cruises offered by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises, sail between Vancouver and Honolulu, leaving you to book a one-way flight to or from Hawaii. Longer one-way sailings from upscale brands, such as Oceania Cruises, Seabourn and Silversea Cruises, will traverse the Pacific Ocean between Tahiti (or another far-flung island) and Vancouver or Seattle.
The shorter, one-way sailings are a good compromise for travelers who don't want to take a full two weeks or can't imagine 10 days at sea on one vacation but do want some relaxing time on the ship. They also allow pre- or post-cruise stays in Hawaii. The longer one-off journeys are more for folks wanting to explore a wide swath of the Pacific, with Hawaii being a small part of that deep dive.

Best Hawaii cruise lines
It's no surprise that I find Norwegian Cruise Line to be one of the best Hawaii cruise lines because it offers a unique product that's a reasonable vacation length for most people and really allows its guests to experience many of Hawaii's highlights.
Princess Cruises is a great choice for two-week, round-trip Hawaii cruises, with multiple departure ports and sail dates on offer. Carnival, Holland America and Viking also offer this type of sailing. Holland America is a great choice for longer round-trip sailings that explore deep into the South Pacific but begin and end in North America.
Sister lines Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean are good bets for those hybrid one-way cruises from the West Coast to Hawaii.
Seabourn , Silversea and Oceania offer upscale accommodations, fine dining and multiple fare inclusions for travelers looking to journey in style across the Pacific Ocean, stopping in Hawaii along the way. Seabourn and Silversea feature smaller ships, more fare inclusions and higher prices than Oceania.
UnCruise Adventures is the line for travelers who want to get off the beaten path on a small ship with a flexible itinerary. These sailings are perfect for active folks who want to get up close to nature. You don't have to be a true cruiser to love UnCruise, but you do need a large budget, as intimate adventures don't come cheap.
Things to do in Hawaii
Whether you're looking for utter relaxation or an adrenaline rush, you'll find plenty of things to do in Hawaii. The islands have much to offer families, couples and friends of all ages.
Obviously, a top attraction is Hawaii's many beaches. You can plop down in the sand on beautifully manicured strands of white sand or find more rugged volcanic black-sand beaches. Look for beach parks with sheltered swimming areas for families, or find a secluded beach away from popular tourist areas. Some beaches can have strong currents or rough seas during certain times of the year, so always exercise caution when swimming.
Water sports are also a big draw, whether that's surfing Hawaii's waves or snorkeling with green turtles in Maui. Kayak out to sea or along Kauai's Wailua River, or try your hand at kite-surfing or stand-up paddleboarding. For a more chill afternoon out on the waves, consider a whale-watching cruise, sunset sail or scenic boat ride along the Napali Coast.
Nature lovers can find a variety of hikes within lush green forests or along the rocky landscape of the Waimea Canyon. Maui's Road to Hana is a must-do if you like twisty roads and cascading waterfalls. Watch the sun rise or set, bike down the extinct Haleakala volcano, or visit a live one at Volcanoes National Park near Hilo on the island of Hawaii.
Many travelers enjoy learning about Hawaiian culture and history. Attend a luau, where you can feast on Hawaiian cuisine and enjoy music, dancing and fire play. Some luaus take place on plantations, where you can discover more about local agriculture. Or, stop by historic attractions, such as Honolulu's Iolani Palace or the Big Island's Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park (the "city of refuge"), to learn about the ancient Polynesian culture or the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Best Hawaii cruise ports
The islands of Hawaii only offer a few cruise ports for ships to visit. (UnCruise Adventures is the exception, calling in a few smaller places where the big ships can't go.) All of them are top-notch, so it's hard to say which one is the best overall. Certainly, some ports are better for different types of activities.
The following Hawaii ports are the ones commonly found on cruise itineraries.
Honolulu, Oahu
Honolulu is known for Pearl Harbor, where you can visit the USS Arizona Memorial Museum, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, a submarine museum and an aviation museum. Cruisers can catch some rays at Waikiki Beach or hike the Diamond Head Crater.
Learn about Hawaiian history at Mauna Ala, the Royal Mausoleum, and the Iolani Palace, or Hawaiian culture at a luau or the Polynesian Cultural Center. You can also take a tour to Oahu's North Shore. Oahu is the turn-around port for Pride of America, so travelers should consider a pre- or post-cruise stay to see the sights.
Nawiliwili, Kauai
The small but mighty Kauai is one of the best Hawaii ports for outdoor, nature-based adventure. Get your cameras out for the rocky landscapes of the Waimea Canyon and the breathtaking cliffs of the Napali Coast. If you like hiking or kayaking, you've come to the right island, but you can also take it easy on any number of nearby beaches.
Take a riverboat along the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto, or hop on a tour bus to see where many of your favorite movies were filmed. It's also a good spot for a luau if your ship stays in port late enough.
Hilo, Hawaii
The Big Island is the only island offering two major ports for cruise ships: Hilo on the east coast and Kona on the west. Hilo is the jumping-off point to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can hike through a lava tube or watch steam venting from the still-active volcano.
The area is also home to numerous waterfalls you can visit, such as Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls, as well as black-sand beaches. Kayak or snorkel in Hilo Bay, or — for something different — visit the Volcano Winery to sample vintages made both with grapes and local fruits.
Related: How to choose the best Hawaiian island for you
Kona, Hawaii
The second cruise port on the island of Hawaii, Kona, is one of the best ports for visiting a coffee plantation and sampling local Hawaiian coffee. For travelers more interested in ancient Polynesian history, the Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, the site of an old city of refuge, is a fascinating place to visit. Otherwise, Kona offers plenty of beaches, snorkeling opportunities and boat and submarine tours.
Kahului, Maui
Maui also has two cruise ports, but they serve the same area and attractions. Currently, the tender port at Lahaina is closed, as the city rebuilds after the devastating 2023 fires.
Ships continue to call at Kahului, which is in an industrial area near the airport. Cruise ships can dock at that port, but you'll need to take a tour or other transportation to see the sights.
Must-sees on Maui include the extinct volcano Haleakala (for sunset or sunrise visits or bike rides down the steep slopes), the twisty Road to Hana with its waterfall views and many gorgeous white-sand beaches. Maui is the best Hawaii cruise port for whale watching in season or snorkeling in its clear waters. Visit the Maui Ocean Center to check out more sea life while staying dry.
When to book a Hawaii cruise
The earlier you book a Hawaii cruise, the better. That's because the cruise lines offer comparatively few Hawaii sailings as compared to Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, for example.
Norwegian Cruise Line bases only one ship in the region; other lines only sail to the islands seasonally. Booking early will not only guarantee you get the cabin type you want on the sail date you prefer but might also get you the lowest prices and promotional booking bonuses (i.e., free stuff). In addition, unless you live on the West Coast, a Hawaii cruise will require a long flight either to California or Honolulu, so you'll want plenty of time to find an airfare deal or available award seat.

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise
What to bring on a Hawaii cruise depends on which cruise you're taking. If you're on a weeklong sailing on casual NCL, you can skip the dressy clothes and prioritize casual outfits that work with whatever beachy or sporty excursions you've got planned in Hawaii. Sun hats, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and water-friendly shoes are all must-pack items. Don't forget your camera (or waterproof case for your cellphone) and binoculars for whale watching.
Travelers on a longer Hawaii sailing on a line like Princess will want to bring nicer clothes for dinners on board, as well as plenty of activities for all those sea days. That could include books or an e-reader, a packable board game, a knitting project or a journal. UnCruise passengers should pack hiking boots, moisture-wicking athletic clothing, plenty of swimsuits and waterproof bags to protect their gear.

Bottom line
A cruise can be an ideal way to explore multiple Hawaiian islands in one trip and save on costs such as dinner and car rentals.
However, unlike in other cruise regions, travelers are limited in the itineraries and times of the year they can sail. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America is a great way to visit the islands in just a week, but fans of leisurely trips with lots of sea days should look at round-trip cruises from California and other West Coast departure ports.
Once you've decided how you want to cruise Hawaii, you can seek out the best cruise fares so you're ready to say "Aloha!" to an incredible vacation when the right deal pops up.

To support local relief efforts, we have donated $50,000 to Maui United Way and are encouraging others to join our efforts by donating at mauiunitedway.org . In addition, together with our partners, we have collected and will be donating over $150,000 in supplies such as food, clothing, and mattresses to the Hawaii Community Foundation, while also activating our network of suppliers to support with in-kind donations. Dinner & Sunset Cruises in Maui Hawaii
Dinner cruises are available most evenings before sunset, with boats departing from Lahaina or Maʻalaea. But should you take a dinner cruise, or should you take a daytime cruise and then go to dinner on land?
The advantage of a dinner cruise is that you have beautiful views of Maui and the neighboring islands of Lanai and Molokai from the ship, a lovely sunset, and dinner, all in one neat package.
If you would like to go on a dinner cruise during your Maui vacation, see the comparisons between some of the various available dinner cruise choices below. Or click for more Maui Dinner Cruises .

Some come to Maui for the beach. Some come to Maui for adventure. If you are in the adventure camp, check out these 6 Maui adventure cruises to get your heart thumping.
1. Lanai Spinner Dolphin Adventure Cruise
- 2. Chartered Sailing Adventure
3. Whale Watching Tour by Raft
- 4. Advanced Snorkeling at the Molokini Crater
- 5. Circumnavigate Lanai by Raft Adventure
6. Maui Atlantis Submarine Adventure
Cruising depicts relaxing on the lido deck sipping a pina colada. These cruises are nothing of the sort.
As a Maui resident, I have lost all interest in sunset cruises offshore Lahaina. Lacking the patience and fortitude to sit on a 150 person sunset ship sipping watered-down cocktails put me on the hunt for the action-packed boating adventures to be found on Maui.
As a land lover, I pushed myself to find unique opportunities offshore Maui that would quench my need for adventure. These are my favorite adventure cruises through the best tour operators on the island.
I have no commercial affiliation with these operators, I just enjoyed the use of their boat and knowledge.
What is a Maui Adventure Cruise?
Setting off by sail or powerboat was my first criteria when choosing an adventure cruise. While I wanted to put Lopaka’s Aloha Adventure Spearfishing on my list, a boat is not part of their tour.
Offshore Maui, past the reefs, is where I wanted the adventure to start. Therefore a boat, hence cruising, needed to be included for the tour.
The level of adventure was my next criterion. I like an adventure to be a bit scary, a bit challenging, but a very high rate of survival with all limbs attached. My list ended up meeting my thirst for adventure. These tours were or sound like a blast to go on.
The amount of adventure is ranked by the Awe Factor for each Maui adventure tour in the Bottom Line. My biases lean toward seeing wild animals in their natural habitats and high-speed activities like Maui raft adventures.
Now, I haven’t been on all these adventure tours so I’ll update my post as I tick them off my list. If I haven’t been on the tour yet then I reference TripAdvisor and Yelp reviews to get a sense of the experience.
Experience is what I’m after. I want these adventure cruises to be memorable. A trip to Maui needs some adventure to set it apart from other beach vacations. In case you ever forget your trip to the most isolated islands in the world that also have the largest migration of humpback whales in the world.
Third, but close to my heart, is the tour operator and activity needs to have a low impact on the environment. I do not want to participate in an adventure that hurts animals or damages their habitat. While a powerboat is not ideal for my carbon footprint, many operators give back to environmental causes.
The fourth criterion was the cruise had to leave from Maui. There are some amazing adventure cruises from Maui’s neighboring islands of Lania and Molokai. While Lania and Molokai are part of the County of Maui, I didn’t think it was fair to include them as a Maui adventure cruise.
The fifth criterion required the ship to not hold over 40 people. 40 passengers are still a large number to manage but I found snorkel tours that were very entertaining while being on large catamarans.
That last criterion helped me keep the price down on these adventure excursions.
Maui Adventure Tours Don’t Have to Be For the Rich
Therefore, this list isn’t for rich and famous. The price justifies the thrill and is reasonable, in my opinion.
These adventure cruises won’t break your Hawaii vacation budget.
Prices range from $49 to $150 per passenger for the Maui adventure tours I found to be the best.
I’m not always recommending the lowest cost option. As I am looking for environmentally friendly operators and smaller boats, these come at a higher cost.
If you would like to shop around for Maui adventure cruises outside of my list but using these ideas, check out Hawaii Activities . It is a comparison website specific to Hawaii fun in the sun activities.
If you are flying thousands of miles to Maui, I highly recommend you invest in at least one guided activity. The local knowledge and unique opportunity thanks to the tour operators’ equipment (zipline, boat, bike, raft, etc.) will enable you to learn and see new parts of the island.
Maui is full of free or low-cost activities like hiking, snorkeling, parks, swimming, and sitting on top of a volcano at sunrise. You need to do these Maui activities for sure.
Save some extra spending cash for something unique, like a Maui adventure cruise or whale watching in Maui.
An Adventure Cruise is Not a Sunset Cruise
Sunset cruises are amazing. Be it with your significant other or family, Maui sunset cruises are well done, offer amazing sunsets, and are usually worth the money. I don’t want to rag on sunset cruises.
They are just not my cup of tea.
Therefore, this list does not include sunset cruises or Maui dinner cruises offshore Lahaina, where the best sunsets are. Some sunset cruises are on intimate catamarans with live music. You won’t get ocean spray on your face on those boats.
Try a small chartered sailboat if you want an intimate sunset cruise with a dash of thrilling sailing.
The Best Maui Adventure Cruises
Set sail or hop in a powerboat to try one (or more) of these adventure cruises during your stay on Maui. My goal is to try them all. One of the perks of living on Maui.
These are not in order of preference. Find the one that meets your fancy and go have an adventure on your Hawaii vacation.

Board a raft from Maui to head across the Au’au channel. 6 miles away is the privately-owned island of Lanai. Lanai is sparsely populated and lacks the resorts of Maui. Its seclusion and calm mean Lanai has an untouched coral reef. In fact, it is the longest coral reef in Hawaii.
I’m not going for the snorkeling, but it is a bonus. I want to see the large pod of Spinner Dolphins who hangout along Lanai’s southern coast.
Spinner Dolphins get their name for their love of jumping out of the water and performing acrobatic spins. I’ve seen them from the beach but never a few feet away aboard a raft or snorkeling with dolphins in the wild.
The raft enables the tour guide to be agile when looking for them. Plus they know their usual hangout spots. Raft trips holding 17 to 36 people and leave from Lahaina. Book in advance as they sell out rather quickly.
A raft is an ideal way to go as the tours stop at two or more snorkel locations and also to find Spinner Dolphins on the way or at the snorkeling spot. One tour by Hawaii Ocean Rafting also includes a stop at a shipwreck.
Erica and I are planning on going in March. The best reviews and most adventure-filled tours are from Hawaii Ocean Rafting’s Dolphin + Snorkel + Shipwreck tour and Maui Adventure Cruise’s Lanai Dolphin Adventure tour .
Bottom Line:
- Cost: $120 to $150 per person.
- Length: 4 to 5 hours
- Awe Factor: High
2. Chartered Sailing Adventure
I grew up in Northern Michigan. We had Lake Michigan and hundreds of lakes for sailing in my backyard. Sailing can be whatever you want it to be, a leisurely cruise or a rollercoaster ride. The choice is yours.
Taking a private chartered sailing adventure gives you the same choice. On Maui, you can almost always find the wind to make an adventure out of it. Go around the point, and let the ocean spray crash onto you.
My family went out on GungHo Sailing out of the Lahaina Wharf. The 34-foot sailboat captained by the professional sailor (he sailed the same boat to Tahiti with his wife and 3 kids) Captain Keahi Ho.
Captain Keahi asked us when onboarding, “do you want to get wet?” “Yes” was our unanimous response.
We headed north towards Kaanapali to be greeted with high winds and big waves. My dad took the helm with Captain Keahi telling him what to do. We pulled the sails, tacked, and leaned hard as waves ponded us. We all had smiles on our faces.
After some adventure-filled sailing, we went on the lookout for whales in calmer waters. We didn’t find any whales as it was early in the season but we enjoyed the smooth sailing and the sun for the rest of our journey.
Chartered sailing companies with good reviews, smaller vessels, and offer the flexibility to be adventurous are GungHo Sailing , Scotch Mist , and Kainani Sails . All set sail from West Maui.
- Cost: $650 (6 people max)
- Length: 2.5 hours
Everyone gets a front-row seat when whale watching in a fast and maneuverable rigid-hulled inflatable raft. I’ve done whale watching on the larger vessels like the Pacific Whale Foundation.
It is an amazing experience to see and hear humpback whales. But doing it from a large ship was a slow process and the whales were some distance away.
That doesn’t happen on a whale watching tour by raft. The rafts don’t encroach on the whales but do to their maneuverability, they can get to the general area faster and cause less stress on the whales. A raft is perfect for close encounters.
With 12 to 24 passengers on board, including the crew, you will get an intimate experience. The rafts also provide similar services as the larger vessels like they have a marine naturalist on board, headphones to listen to the whales, and they guarantee sightings.
The recommended rafting companies have a naturalist on board so they know to respect and not bother the whales. NOAA says humpbacks are still threatened due to vessel-harassment, underwater noise, and vessel strikes. All the bad things that could happen during a tour.
This season, I’m planning on heading out on a raft for Maui whale watching.
The following raft operators have the best reviews and are environmentally responsible.
- Ultimate Whale Watch and Snorkel (Lahaina)
- Blue Water Rafting (Kihei)
- Redline Rafting Co (Kihei)
- Cost: $49 to $65 to per person
- Length: 2 to 4 hours
- Seasonal: 15-December to 15-April

4. Advanced Molokini Snorkeling Adventure
The word on the street is the best snorkeling around Maui is around Lanai. Molokini crater was once the eminent spot for snorkeling but some say it isn’t as vibrant anymore.
I’d like to see it for myself. At a minimum, I’d like to get up close and personal with the jaw-dropping Molokini crater. It looks very cool.
If inside the crater isn’t as good anymore, perhaps the rugged backside is better. The Pacific Whale Foundation has a Molokini Wild Side Snorkel Eco-Adventure.
The Pac Whale Foundation takes out 38 guests max on their 54-foot single deck catamaran called the Ocean Explorer.
The tour is for advanced snorkeling which I assume means strong swimmers and those who like to dive down deep. The smaller group, with advanced skills, have more flexibility to go to more spots and discover hidden gems during their tour compared to the larger tour operators. Seeing turtles will happen.
- Cost: $140 per person
- Length: 6 hours
- Breakfast and lunch provided
- Awe Factor: Medium
5. Circumnavigate Lanai Raft Tour
Ocean Riders is the only HBI raft circumnavigating Lanai. HBI rafts, as I learned, are rigid-hulled rafts used by the US Coast Guard for search and rescue. They are 1,000 pounds heavier than other ocean-going rafts making for a smoother ride.
The adventure is their HBI raft can zoom around Lanai in a day while stopping at remote locations. Their Lanai adventure raft tour includes seeing the following:
- snorkeling coves
- remote beaches, one is called Shipwreck Beach (pretty cool)
- touring sea caves
- dolphins, turtles, and some of the best snorkeling Maui has to offer
The captain will customize the itinerary based on weather and conditions making for a unique experience. Nothing is timed. Like, they don’t make you get out of the water to get home.
The boat is certified for 22 people but Ocean Riders take a maximum of 18 passengers. The captain brings his dog on some trips.
From the reviews, the crew makes everyone feel comfortable while onboard and in the water. They have years of experience of knowing all the spots, the history, and how to find where the dolphins and sea turtles will be swimming. This sounds like a perfect adventure to bring the whole family along.
As Lanai has the best snorkeling around Maui, this tour sounds like the best way to snorkel while exploring Lanai. The high-energy, fast raft makes it all the more entertaining.
- Cost: $149 per person
- Length: 7.5 hours
The Atlantis Submarine Adventure sounds like a kitschy tourist trap. Maybe it is but I want to check it out. I’ve never been on a submarine and this is a real submarine.
Atlantis isn’t a WWII U-Boat but maybe that is a good thing for safety reasons. The Atlantis comes with air-conditioned comfort.
The submarine carries 48 passengers to a depth of 125 feet. A boat takes you out from Lahaina Wharf to the submarine. You board and then go underwater to an artificial reef, made from a 19th-century whaling ship replica, that is thriving with marine life.
Atlantis Maui Undersea Adventure is a unique way to see below the surface.
This may be a tourist trap but it has caught my imagination. I’m down to give it a try. My son will love to go on this one once he grows to 36 inches (the height restriction).
- Cost: $124 per person
- Length: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Awe Factor: Light
Best Times to Go on a Maui Adventure Tour
There is no real off-season for Maui. The weather is amazing all year long. For planning a Maui adventure cruise though, I do have some advice.
I always recommend visiting Maui during the shoulder seasons of September – October, and April – May. As the island isn’t as busy, the adventure tours will be less crowded and easier to book.
The wind picks up over the winter months so that may impact some of these cruises and snorkeling visibility.
The whale watching tour would be the best if visiting over the winter months as the whales are here from mid-December to mid-April but also because visibility for the snorkeling tours may not be ideal.
As all quality Maui whale watching tours guarantee sightings, I recommend booking your tour at the beginning of your trip. If you don’t see whales, you can go back again during your vacation.
The weather is always sunny and above 75 degrees Fahrenheit in Maui so there isn’t any real bad time to do these adventure cruises. The Maui ocean temperature also averages 75 to 80 degrees around Maui so swimming without the need for a wetsuit is always possible.

ABOUT CALYPSO MAUI
The Calypso Maui is ready to take you on exciting ocean excursions. The boat launches from Ma’alaea – the most easily reached, centralized harbor on the island . You can go on the morning Molokini Snorkeling Tour , the Sunset Dinner Cruise , the seasonal Whale Watch , and – for super special occasions — the Private Charter !
This motorized catamaran is built with three decks of fun, and is a wonderful vessel for landlubbers and ocean adventurers alike. The Calypso Maui operates like a spacious, floating amusement park, and her double hulls are built for stability . When the boat is moving forward, the twin hulls cut smartly through the water, leaving most of the craft to float high above the waves, and ride on top of the sea-surface winds. This leads to a comfortable, smooth catamaran snorkeling trip in Maui for you and your group, even when island trade-winds factor in.
The views from Calypso Maui are better than any other boat for miles, because she is the only vessel on the island that has three decks . As a bonus, you’ll find glass panels on the bottom of the boa t, too! Two of the cabins are completely covered from the sun, but both ends are open to the sea air. The huge tinted windows along both the port and starboard sides ensure that you always have a good view of the great Pacific beyond the railings. Year round, it’s good to keep your eyes open for flying fish , sea turtles, dolphins, false killer whales, and other fantastic marine animals who may be up near the surface. During whale season (mid-December through mid-April), come out to see the 45-ton humpback whales! Once you’ve seen a whale, nothing else can compare.
Our fun, dynamic, and experienced crew is there for you no matter what you need, and safety is paramount. If you come out with us to Molokini Crater, the captain and crew will teach you what you need to know in order to snorkel. Crew members will explain how to use the wide dive steps, two water slides, or the “leap of faith” jump-off point to enter the water, and they will entertain you with little-known facts about the islands that you are gliding past. The crew will also have delicious food and drinks at the ready, along with local insider tips, good humor, and Aloha .
600+ 5-STAR REVIEWS FROM GUESTS!
We had a large group with small children. The crew was very accommodating and friendly! They made sure we had a spot together on the boat and were comfortable! They had all the right equipment to make snorkeling doable for all skill levels and ages including a viewing board to allow my 2 year old niece to see the ocean bottom. The food was great! The boat was clean and spacious! The family said it was a highlight of the trip! We would definitely do it again!
Great experience! Enjoyed the large boat. The crew were awesome, friendly and professional! The food was delicious! It was two fabulous snorkeling spots!
This trip was amazing. Having a big boat was worth it. Sure there were more people. But when there was a heavy surf we barely noticed. The food for both breakfast and lunch was great!!! Also on the ride back they gave out some little ice creams too! The photographer Marley is amazing at photographing and he has both go pros and nice camera to use in the water. This was 100% worth it.
We took our kids (6 & 11) and we had a blast! The highlight was swimming with a turtle for sure. Every just seeing the cool fish was amazing. The girls loved the slides off the boat and the food was good. Definitely would do it again
An absolute must do. This is an awesome adventure for the price. You get to stop at two locations and even if you only get out and snorkel at one it is way worth it for the cost. Molokini was incredible and clear. The crew on this boat makes everything even better the captain is funny, friendly, gives clear helpful instructions to snorkel newbies like myself and they have everything they can for sea sickness. Truly an amazing time with the Calypso.
Me and my friend got to go on the dinner cruise. The captain was great, the boat was very nice, we loved the live music(Alex is very talented), the crew was good and the food and views were amazing! Thanks for an unforgettable evening aboard the Calypso!
