The Caribbean is one of the most magical destinations to visit in December! With its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, amazing culture, and warm temperatures it’s no wonder why so many people flock to the islands this time of year.

From the big resorts of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic to the smaller, more intimate hidden gems like Grenada and Aruba, there is an island for everyone.

I know from spending time in Grenada in December that it is a great option. The weather is usually warm and sunny with a cool breeze that makes for perfect days spent relaxing on the beach or hiking to waterfalls. The islands are also boosting tons of dry days during this time

While I could be poetic about all of the incredible destinations in the Caribbean that are worth exploring during December. I understand that some may not feel as comfortable traveling to such places without having some knowledge of their safety and security.

As someone who has spent quite a bit of time on these islands, they make for the perfect destination. That is why I decided to write about the best Caribbean island in December.

Aruba is the perfect Caribbean destination for travelers looking to explore during December. Aruba is full of active nightlife, golden beaches, and a warm temperate climate. This island has something to offer for everyone.

Such as snorkeling, kayaking or even windsurfing make it a great place to try out something new! Also, be sure not to miss the flamingos here.

As the sun sets each day, you can experience warm tropical nights filled with music and dancing at one of its many nightclubs and bars.

Not only are there plenty of fun activities and attractions available on the island itself, but its location gives easy access to other nearby islands such as Curacao and Bonaire. So if you can’t pick an island nation, why not plan an island-hopping trip?

2. Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a Caribbean holiday getaway.

The perfect romantic getaway, if you are planning a trip with your partner.

December is the perfect time to visit because this time of year sees warm sunny days with cool balmy evenings that are perfect for exploring the many attractions.

And with average highs in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (mid-20s Celsius), it’s a great chance to escape from colder climates for a few days or however long you can get away.

The Cayman Islands provide something for all ages, making it an ideal spot to book your next vacation!

3. Barbados

Barbados is a beautiful Caribbean island that is perfect for a December vacation.

Its spectacularly white-sand beaches and warm, crystal-clear waters make it an ideal destination for snorkeling, swimming, paddle boarding, sailing, and more.

With average temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (mid-20s Celsius) and sunny days with cool evenings, Barbados can provide an unforgettable experience.

The island also features a variety of attractions to explore such as the animals at the Barbados Wildlife Reserve or Harrison’s Cave – an amazing underground cavern system filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

4. Turks and Caicos

Traveling to the Turks and Caicos in December is one of the best spots for a tropical vacation . Grace Bay Beach is the crown jewel of the island. It is up there with one of the prettiest beaches I have ever seen.

Its crystal-clear blue waters and snow-white powdery sand are like no other. Just beware that this is one of the more expensive islands in the Caribbean, so if you are on a budget you might want to skip this one.

If you are not one to sit on the beach all day, Turks and Caicos offer some epic scuba diving.

With an array of vibrant corals, fish, and sea creatures to explore. Deep sea fishing is also popular, with plenty of tasty species to catch throughout the year.

After a day filled with adventure, you might want to treat yourself to a meal at one of the excellent restaurants near Grace Bay Beach.

Enjoy freshly caught seafood prepared by local chefs while taking in stunning ocean views – it’s an unforgettable experience!

Sunsets are one of the must-see attractions of Punta Cana and it’s surely something that you won’t forget for the rest of your life.

There’s also plenty to do in this paradise, from spa days to snorkeling trips – you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Starting mid-December and ending on January 2 nd  the streets of Basseterre are filled with activity with the main carnival events taking place between the J’ouvert parade on December 26 th  and Last Lap which is January 2 nd .

The whole carnival week is worth seeing for the brightly colored costumes, music, and dancing in the traditional Caribbean style. If you get tired of the excitement of carnival then visit the historic Brimstone Hill fortress UNESCO World Heritage site or pop over to sister island Nevis and explore some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

From June until December, the island experiences rain in the afternoons so hotels typically lower their prices. This makes Tobago one of the best Caribbean destinations in December for a budget vacation, if you don’t mind occasional afternoon rain showers.

St. Kitts (part of St. Kitts & Nevis ) is an exceptionally beautiful island with a rich heritage. 

Here you can visit a variety of famous historical landmarks, including Romney House. If you’d prefer a laid-back getaway where you simply soak up the sun, you can head to Turtle Beach to appreciate the fine weather and watch the water lap at the shore.

The main tourist season in St. Kitts runs between December and May when the weather is typically mild and dry.

Escaping to the Caribbean for Christmas and swapping snow for sun, sand and tropical drinks sounds like a great way to bring some joy to the holiday season.

December weather in the Caribbean is particularly dry, with a “Christmas breeze” that locals wait for all year. From proximity and nonstop flights to affordable lodging, unique cultural festivities and an ideal party/relaxation balance, here are five Caribbean destinations to spend Christmas this year.

1. Jamaica: fresh sorrel, fruit cake and reggae fests

The best part of Christmas in  Jamaica  is the food. The markets are livelier than ever with the season's favorite fruit – sorrel – in high demand. Feast on seasonal specialties like curried goat or ham with rice and beans, fruit cake and sorrel juice made with a hint of ginger and rum.

2. Dominican Republic: waterfalls, free concerts and nightlife

The season is particularly festive in the Dominican Republic , where Christmas holidays are celebrated through music, shopping and food. In Santo Domingo , shopping malls are beautifully decorated and host indoor arts and crafts markets featuring locally made products.

In the Zona Colonial, you’ll find live music daily, with free concerts beside Plaza Espana ’s giant Christmas tree every weekend evening.

In Puerto Plata , beaches and resorts are less crowded and outdoor adventures are plentiful. Hike to waterfalls in the countryside, tour a chocolate factory and witness the Christmas Eve tradition of pig roasting overnight. Dancing merengue and bachata until sunrise is also tradition so head to a few local bars or nightclubs for a little practice. 

Sample Christmas dishes on or off your resort — pasteles en hoja are like tamales, made with plantain dough, stuffed and wrapped in a green plantain leaf. And don't forget to sample Dominican ponche.

3. Belize: rainforests, culture and cayes

Christmas in Belize is a chance to experience some of its unique cultural events, while island hopping and hiking in rainforests. Lodging also remains reasonably priced, as more tourists visit in January and February. 

Stay at a riverside lodge in Burrell Boom or in Crooked Tree Village , outside Belize City , for a traditional Kriol Christmas dinner of turkey with cranberry jelly, rice and beans, ham, potato salad, black cake and rum popo. On Boxing Day, head to the Burrell Boom horse races or to the Brukdong Bram celebration in Gales Point. 

In Dangriga , Christmastime draws junkanu and charikanari dancers to the streets. Charikanari is a hunting dance; participants wear headdresses resembling a cow’s head, with real horns, and hunt a  “two foot” cow, dancing and teasing the crowds in the street. 

Afterwards, hop to affordable Tobacco Caye for snorkeling and relaxation along Belize’s Barrier Reef. 

4. The Bahamas: Junkanoo, shopping and seclusion

The Bahamas’ annual Christmas Junkanoo Festival on Boxing Day is one of the best reasons to visit. The colorful parade in Nassau , the largest of all on the archipelago, welcomes everyone on the islands to dress up and dance in the streets.

Christmas shopping attracts arts-and-crafts vendors from around the islands to Nassau. Visit Festival Place at Prince George Wharf for locally made items. Port Lucaya Market on Grand Bahama also just reopened. When you’re ready to escape the crowds, hop over to Eleuthera, Bimini or any of the Out Islands except for the Abacos, which remain closed after Hurricane Dorian.

Overnight in Old San Juan explore its charming streets for shopping, history and food  and dance away to live salsa or bomba. 

Vieques is an easy hop on the ferry from Fajardo; arrive early to ensure availability. You should also book your rooms and car rentals in advance. Continue the holiday party vibe on the busier side of Vieques in Esmeralda, or escape into the hills near wild black sand beaches.

When Travel + Leisure readers head to the islands of the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas, they’re craving relaxation above all else. But as this year’s list of favorites proves, the places that help them fulfill that goal vary widely, from isles known for their sun-soaked shores and ultra-exclusive resorts to rustic sailors’ hideaways with pristine swimming coves and hiking trails.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Islands were specifically rated on the criteria below:

• Natural attractions/beaches
• Activities/sights
• Restaurants/food
• People/friendliness

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses. 

T+L readers dialed into three factors above all else when it came to sharing what they loved most about islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas: the people, beaches, and water. One voter praised Anguilla (No. 2) profusely: “The island has 33 beaches — most of which are stunning in different ways, like white sand or peaceful coves surrounded by rocks — and the water is the bluest I've ever seen. The absolute best thing about this island is the friendliness of the people. They are the most welcoming people in the Caribbean. It is my happy place, and I will continue to go back as long as I can physically get around and can afford to do so.” Another place that epitomized the trifecta: St. Vincent and the Grenadines (No. 17). “Beaches are beautiful (especially Palm Island), and we have always found the locals to be so friendly — plus, great snorkeling in the cays,” shared one reader.

But there’s no shortage of options for travelers seeking activities under the sun either. “I love that you can swim in a cove, hike a mountain, and eat sushi all in the same day,” recalled one reader who spent time on Virgin Gorda (No. 7). “The rock caves that you can hike through were beautiful,” shared another, who toured the island via catamaran. Jamaica (No. 23) was memorable for another WBA voter who “enjoyed the bamboo raft ride down the Martha Brae River,” calling the adventure “scenic and beautiful.” And then there’s No. 18 Bonaire, which has “excellent scuba diving and snorkeling, restaurants, and friendly people,” according to a reader.

But it was the Nature Island that once again earned readers’ highest marks, securing the No. 1 spot for a second year in a row. Read on to find out what makes it such a special destination in WBA voters’ eyes.

In contrast to the Caribbean islands known for well-heeled crowds and white-sand beaches, this mountainous haven primarily draws eco-minded travelers who long to get lost in its rain forests, hot springs, and black-sand shores. “It is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of stressful living,” mused one reader. “This is a place that should be on everyone's bucket list. The people are friendly and welcoming, and there is so much to explore!” Among the most popular activities: hiking to sites like the famed volcanic Boiling Lake and the serene Emerald Pool in Morne Trois Pitons National Park. And while the island’s rugged glories are the driving force behind a visit, that doesn’t mean there aren’t luxe places to stay, including Secret Bay — this year’s reader-favorite Caribbean resort.

December in the Caribbean: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

In the Caribbean, you can escape to warmer weather, celebrate local holidays and traditions, and of course, hit the beautiful white-sand beaches. December weather is comfortably warm and Christmas is celebrated with colorful festivities in a uniquely Caribbean way. If you can break away from family, friends, and the usual traditions December brings, a trip to the Caribbean may be ideal.

Caribbean Weather in December

With the threat of hurricanes and tropical storms past, December travelers can look forward to the Caribbean's average high of 83 F (28 C) and average lows of 73 F (23 C). Although, temperatures in Bermuda and the Bahamas tend to be on the cooler side. You might get rain on about one of every three days, but it's more of a light afternoon shower than a torrential downpour this time of year.

What to Pack

Pack some bathing suits,  summer clothing , and sunscreen for the Caribbean's warm, bright days. Nights can be a bit breezy, so bring at least one sweater or a pair of long pants just in case. If you plan to visit during the holidays, you'll want to bring along some nice attire, especially if you are going to attend a formal Christmas mass, candlelight service, or holiday meal.

December Events in the Caribbean

The Caribbean has a broad array of unique Christmas traditions. You'll find Christmas Markets in  Jamaica , Junkanoo in the Bahamas, parang music on Trinidad , and the Dutch Sinterklaas and his "Zwarte Piet" (Black Pete) helpers in Aruba and Curacao .

• St. Lucia National Day : Parties and parades surround National Day in St. Lucia, including sports events, a Festival of Lights, a choir festival, market festival, and feasts. National Day is actually December 13, but the party goes on most of the month, mixing with the Christmas and New Year's celebrations. St. Lucia, the "Saint of Light" and the namesake of the small island, was one of the earliest Christian martyrs. The festival of lights is also celebrated in Sweden, Norway, and parts of Finland in honor of the saint.
• St. Nicholas Day : This day is celebrated in the Dutch Caribbean, which comprises of Curacao ,  Aruba ,  St. Maarten , Bonaire , St. Eustatius, and Saba. Watch for St. Nicholas (Sinter Klaas) riding his white horse and trailed by his Zwarte Pete minions on December 5, St. Nicholas Eve. This is the day that good Dutch children hope to find their shoes filled with gifts.
• Junkanoo : A celebratory parade and party, Junkanoo is exciting and colorful. The largest Bahamas Junkanoo party parades are in  Nassau , but you can also experience the intoxicating carnival atmosphere on  Grand Bahama Island ,  Eleuthera & Harbour Island ,  Bimini ,  the Exumas , and the Abacos. The festivals take place on Boxing Day and New Years Day.
• St. Kitts National Carnival : Every Caribbean island celebrates  some sort of Carnival , but St. Kitts'  is unique in that it celebrates from Christmas until New Year's (mid-December through January 2). It's both a holiday festival and celebration of national pride. There are pageants, J'ouvert music (calypso-type music), food fairs, and street parties.

December Travel Tips

The weeks in early December are filled with bargain rates on hotels and airfare because this is typically a slow travel time. Many resorts cater to families looking to spend the holidays together by offering all-inclusive packages. Since nearly every Caribbean island has a majority Christian population, it's easy to find local holiday celebrations regardless of where you travel. Christmas cruises to the Caribbean are also an affordable, family-friendly option.

On the downside, while early December may be a cheaper time to visit, hotel and airfare prices rise sharply for the holidays and especially for the week between Christmas and New Year's , when many families have time off from school or work. Those looking for a traditional white Christmas obviously will be disappointed, as will those wanting a typical American-style holiday celebration as the Caribbean has few shopping malls, there are palm trees in place of Christmas trees, sorrel instead of eggnog, and so on. When you're willing to embrace new holiday customs and cultures, you'll be sure to have an exciting and unique winter vacation to remember.

The Best Caribbean islands to visit in December

There is a seemingly endless array of islands to visit on a Caribbean yacht charter , so you are spoiled for choice when looking to pick your next luxury vacation on the water. And with different island vibes offering different flavours of experience, there is something for every taste – from laid-back tropical idylls to vibrant party spots.

Is December a good time to visit the Caribbean?

December is an ideal time of year to visit the Caribbean for a yacht charter, with dependable sea temperatures, a warmer climate and generally less humidity than the summer months. Although its significant geographical spread and varying oceanic exposure mean that different parts of the Caribbean experience different weather systems, in December the average high temperature is an inviting 28C (83F) and the average low temperature is a balmy 23C (73F). Sea temperatures in the Caribbean fluctuate little throughout the year, hovering around 27C (80F), with as little as 3C (6F) variation.

The  Leeward Islands

Home to some of the most popular places to visit on a Caribbean yacht charter, the Leeward Islands include the US and  British Virgin Islands , St Maarten/St Martin, St Barth, St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Guadeloupe and Montserrat, as well as some lesser-known islands.

Some of the most laid-back Caribbean vibes can be experienced on a yacht charter in the US and British Virgin Islands. Whether you are looking to get away from it all nestled in a remote anchorage or fancy a night of partying with sand between your toes, there’s something on offer.

As some of the first islands to be settled on by the incoming colonial fleets, the US and British Virgin Islands are steeped in history and culture. St Thomas is a major transport hub that has a great superyacht marina offering and commercial airport alongside some stunning, long beaches. St John is quainter than her buzzing neighbour, with some excellent restaurants and anchorages as well as a submerged national park to explore while snorkelling.

Jost Van Dyke has some of the best beaches in the whole region, not to mention the iconic Soggy Dollar Bar for a cocktail or two. And St Croix provides visitors a taste of local culture and history, with hermit crab racing making an unexpectedly fun activity for all the family.

Arguably the most fought-after place to anchor among the most prestigious superyachts in the world is off the coast of St Barth between Christmas and the New Year. As well as the flurry of parties both onboard and ashore, you can indulge in some retail therapy at Gustavia’s many luxury boutiques, enjoy lavish lunches at the chic beach clubs peppering the island, and dance well into the early hours in one of the nightclubs in town. For such a small island, St Barth delivers entertainment and glamour in spades.

St Kitts and its diminutive neighbour Nevis are growing in popularity as luxury yacht charter destinations, thanks to the alluring superyacht marina at Christophe Harbour. Here you will find a blend of authentic Kittitian culture and outstanding luxury facilities, including the superyacht harbour and marina village, the ‘ultra-luxe’ Park Hyatt hotel with its Miraval Life in Balance Spa, and a Tom Fazio-designed golf course on its way.

Further afield on St Kitts you can discover a wealth of nature, history and culture among the island’s mountainous landscapes from colonial sugar plantations and fortresses to pristine black-sand beaches and tropical forests nestled under the peak of the dormant volcano.

Few places in the Caribbean can equal the charm and warmth of Antigua, which is a much-loved stop for many yachting veterans. Falmouth and English Harbours are hotspots for the sailing community, though plenty of motor yachts also find themselves tied up stern-to at these historical marinas.

Head to Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbour, where you can discover the 18 th century naval hub that Nelson’s fleet once called its home in the Caribbean; today you will find a selection of restaurants, bars and beaches to explore. Falmouth Harbour has a distinct buzz, with its fun bars and cafes playing reggae and serving up authentic Dark ‘n’ Stormy cocktails that are not for the faint of heart.

On Sundays, make the pilgrimage up to Shirley Heights look-out to listen to local musicians while the rum punch flows and everyone keeps an eager eye out for the infamous ‘green flash’ at sunset.

Antigua also offers some excellent snorkelling and diving spots to the south and east of the island, thanks to its many coral reefs, drop-offs and shipwrecks; Nonsuch Bay is a particular favourite among those in the know, as the quiet anchorage provides an unforgettable sunset dinner spot.

Saint Martin

Saint Martin is the French half of the island that is shared with the Dutch Sint Maarten. You will find a distinctly different flavour here, especially in the cuisine and culture on offer, whereas the Dutch side of the island is more developed, with superyacht marinas, restaurants and bars in abundance. As part of the Leeward Islands, it is an important regional yachting hub and regular point from which to embark on a Caribbean yacht charter, located just a short distance from St Barth and St Kitts.

Orient Bay is one of the most popular yachting spots on the island, while Saba – located around an hour’s cruise from St Martin – is known as the 'Unspoiled Queen' thanks to its pristine rainforests for hiking and teeming reefs for scuba diving.

Trinidad and Tobago

Situated to the south of the Caribbean, close to the South American mainland, are the beautiful islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Nature lovers – particularly bird enthusiasts – will be in heaven exploring the meandering mangroves by boat, or heading to the Asa Wright Nature Centre on Trinidad as well as the Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve on Tobago.

Laze on the loungers of the famous white beaches while sipping an Aruba ariba crème de banana cocktail to truly sink your toes into the Caribbean pace of life.

Wild Dominica , the “Nature Island”, has an average high of 30C in February and plenty of areas ripe for soaking up some rays. With a lush rainforest interior, hiking routes, diving centres and hidden hot springs Dominica is a paradise found for intrepid visitors.

The 114-mile-long Waitukubuli National Trail crisscrosses the island for a hefty two-week hike while the Boiling Lake is an enticing geothermal lagoon – though not for swimming – in the south. A scuba diver’s dream, the comfortable  Fort Young Hotel  on the edge of Roseau features its own on-site diving school, waterfront restaurant and infinity pool. Built on the location of an old military fort overlooking the ocean, spa days, Caribbean cocktail nights and exploring the town are on the itinerary for guests. Better still, Morne Trois Pitons National Park and Victoria Falls are less than a 30-minute drive away.

Best for: Reggae and rum

One of the largest Caribbean islands, a Jamaica escape provides warm rays, good vibes and even better company. Bob Marley ’s home marches to the beat of a reggae drum with the song of laughing gulls to match. If you can tear yourself away from lively beach barbecues of jerk chicken and cold cans of Red Stripe, tour the Appleton Rum Estate to taste rich rums.
