An Okanagan All Our Own

winery1200x900

If you’re an oenophile — that’s connoisseur-speak for those of us for whom wine is more personality than aperitif — then you’ve probably been on a wine tour or two. Likely somewhere in the Okanagan Valley, where Syrah and Riesling flow like the glacier-fed spring water that sustains the region’s bounty of vineyards.

Some of the most vino obsessed among us will fly or drive all the way to the B.C. interior for a spectacular wine tour.

Lucky for us, then, that you don’t actually need to travel very far at all to taste the terroir of wine country. In fact, there’s a wine tour right in our own backyard that offers bouquets you won’t taste anywhere else.

That place is Beau Bella Winery.

Offering winery tours each weekend — 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday — Beau Bella Winery is just minutes away from Edmonton’s Summerside neighbourhood in bucolic Leduc County. That proximity makes it a convenient and alluring weekend “staycation” for even those with the most discerning of palates.

Specializing in wines grown and bottled right here in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. They have all the merlots and sauvignon blancs that you might expect a wine tour to have, but where Beau Bella really shines is in its eclectic selection of fruit wines.

“Everyone thinks fruit wines are sweet and sugary, but people are amazed when they try them because the yeast takes all that sugar away,” says Ann Johnsen , the founder and owner-operator of Beau Bella Winery. “We’ve had people come in and say ‘no, I don’t like fruit wine. I’m not drinking that’ and then they leave with a case of wine at the end.”

Tours cost just $15 per person and typically last between 25 minutes and a couple of hours, depending on how long you spend sipping on the veranda overlooking the winery’s idyllic prairieland. That means you’ll have plenty of time to sample the various vintages, from Saskatoon berry to rhubarb, pear, haskap, cherry, black currant and raspberry — the latter of which have been growing for longer than many of us have been alive.

Rosy Farms LB.August2024

“I’ve had [the raspberry plants] for 44 years,” Johnsen says. “My mother-in-law grew them on their farm and the plants are about 92 years old now.”

If you’re looking to liven up your wine cellar, or just toast to something new, you can book a Beau Bella tour .

12 Lovely Wineries and Vineyards in Alberta to Visit this Summer

Share with your friends!

Alberta is emerging as a wine tourism destination! In recent years, craft breweries, cideries and distilleries have paved the way for winemakers here and we couldn’t be more excited.

With several Alberta wineries and vineyards that have popped up over the last few years, there are phenomenal wine tastings and tours for you to experience.

So grab your friends and plan a fun summer day trip or road trip to visit some of the best Alberta wineries, vineyards and meaderies.

Here are some of my favorite Alberta wineries I’ve enjoyed visiting over the last few years!

This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click through and make a purchase I may make a small commission. I only share information about things I know, love and trust!

What Type of Wine You Can Expect to Find in Alberta

Most vineyards in Alberta are actually meaderies and fruit wineries.

The province’s climate and terroir isn’t really suited for grape growing, but is very fertile for honey and fruit production.

Therefore, you’ll find plenty of producers who make mead, which is honey wine.

You’ll also find an abundance of wines made from flower nectar (like dandelions) and fruits such as raspberries, rhubarb, haskap berries, saskatoon berries and black currants.

And perhaps the coolest part of drinking Alberta wine? It’s healthier than grape wine!

Because of the use of honey and berries, most wines produced in Alberta have over 100 times more antioxidants in a bottle of wine compared to grape wine.

A NEW ADVENTURE  IN EVERY GLASS

wine tours edmonton

"Carole hosted a wine tasting party at my home last night. I found her to be very informative and fun. Carole offered information on wine and the processes in making it. But she also quizzed her audience on their knowledge of wine and their likes and dislikes. This was a very nice way to spend an evening with family and friends"

Kathy Tochenuik

"Carole was a pleasure to work with. I really enjoyed her laid-back attitude and how she was able to showcase wines that were affordable and something different from what we were used to trying. This is a GREAT idea for a Bachelorette party, especially because Carole brings her trunk of wine-related goodies for the girls to go shopping. I am also enjoying being part of the wine club that is offered to the host of the wine party."

Jessica Criag

"Carole has hosted two wine tasting nights at my home and both times we had so much fun. All the guests commented about how enjoyable it was to have someone teach us about wine in an informal setting of a home. We all learned something new about wine and found some new favourites! Carole was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. She is knowledgeable and gave just the right amount of information about the wine to help us to learn while keeping us entertained. I'll definitely have Carole back for another Girls' Night In!"

Jody Spencer

"Carole’s wine tastings (in-person or virtual) are tons of fun! She is knowledgeable and non-judgemental for those of us who don’t know much about wine. Highly recommend!"

Training and studies to become a wine expert..

To become a winemaker, one must follow a specific curriculum. First of all, it is recommended to take a course in viticulture to have a deep understanding of vines, terroirs, and wines. This also allows one to understand the process of wine production from vine cultivation to wine-making. Next, one must specialize in wine tasting. Tasting is essential to developing expertise in recognizing great wines, their quality, characteristics, and aging potential. Therefore, training in wine tasting is a mandatory step to become a winemaker. Visiting vineyards is also an important aspect of a winemaker's training. It allows one to discover different terroirs and appellations, as well as the practices of winemakers and grape growers. Visiting wine cellars is also important to understand the various wine-making processes, from barrel aging to bottling. Burgundy is a key region for winemaker training. This region offers a great diversity of appellations and terroirs with a strong wine-making tradition. The Loire Valley, with its white and red wines made from the Pinot grape, is also an important region for wine-maker training. In Bordeaux, the Grand Cru Classés and prestigious appellations such as Saint-Emilion or Pomerol attract many aspiring winemakers. The Rhône Valley and its hillsides also offer quality training for future wine professionals. In short, becoming a winemaker requires specific training focused on viticulture, wine tasting, and vineyard visits. Wine regions, with their great variety of appellations, terroirs, and grape varieties, are privileged places to train for this exciting profession.

The field of intervention of an oenologist.

An oenologist is an expert in wine production, from vine cultivation to the tasting of the finished product. Their role is to accompany vine growers throughout the production process, from selecting grape varieties to vinification and marketing. The tasks of an oenologist are varied. They may work within a vineyard to oversee grape quality, develop blends and advise on food and wine pairings. They may also work in a cooperative cellar to guide viticulturists in producing wines that conform to the appellations and specifications. Oenologists may also be called upon to conduct blind tastings, sensory and organoleptic analyses, wine assessments and create blends to obtain a specific vintage. Tasting wine is an essential part of an oenologist’s professional life. They must be capable of describing and analyzing a wine's organoleptic characteristics, identifying its aroma, taste, structure and aging potential. To do so, they must have a solid knowledge of wine regions, grape varieties, appellations and vintages. Career opportunities for oenologists are numerous, whether in large vineyards, cooperative cellars, vineyard syndicates, analytical and quality control laboratories or wine and spirits trading companies. Oenologists may also work in the tourism sector as tour guides for cellar visits, wine routes and oenotourism in general. In conclusion, oenology is an exciting and complex profession that requires great expertise in wine production and tasting. Oenologists are key players in the wine industry, present at every stage of production and playing a crucial role in the quality and reputation of wines produced. If you are passionate about the world of wine and vineyards, oenology is an exciting career choice that will allow you to evolve in a dynamic and demanding environment. Why visit a vineyard? Why oenotourism? And how to work in the world of wine? The wine world offers many opportunities for enthusiasts of this iconic beverage. Visiting a vineyard allows you to discover the secrets of wine production, meet producers and taste local wines in a idyllic setting. Oenotourism is a rapidly expanding form of tourism that allows you to discover the vineyards and wines of a region in greater depth. This practice also allows you to understand the history and culture of a region, as well as the associated viticultural traditions. Working in the wine world also offers many opportunities. It is possible to become a vinegrower, oenologist, sommelier, wine merchant or specialized journalist. The key to succeeding in this field is to have a passion for wine and a deep knowledge of its history and production techniques. Training in oenology or viticulture can also help you launch your career in this sector. The job opportunities are varied and can offer enriching experiences for wine enthusiasts.

Why hire a winemaker?

If you're looking to deepen your knowledge of wine and vineyards, hiring an oenologist can be an excellent option for many reasons. First and foremost, an oenologist possesses unique expertise in the field of wine, including knowledge of terroirs, grape varieties, appellations, and winemaking techniques. When visiting a vineyard or wine cellar, an oenologist can help you understand the nuances of each wine, from harvest to bottling. They can also guide you through the tasting of different wines, helping you understand the unique flavors and aromas of each wine. If you're interested in gastronomy and wine pairings, an oenologist can also be of great help. They can assist you in finding the perfect wine to accompany a particular dish or advise you on the best dishes to pair with a specific wine. An oenologist can also be useful if you're building a wine cellar. They can help you select the wines that will best suit your tastes and budget, while also taking into account factors such as vintages and appellations. Finally, it's worth noting that oenologists can work in a wide variety of environments. They may work for vine growers, wine houses, cooperative cellars, wine merchants, or even for themselves. They can also work in specific wine regions, such as the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, or Burgundy, or for specific wines, such as the red wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape or the sparkling wines of Alsace. In conclusion, if you're looking to learn more about the world of wine and deepen your experience of wine tasting and vineyard visits, hiring an oenologist can be an excellent option. How to find a wine expert (oenologist)?

If you're looking for a wine expert, there are several ways to find a professional in this field. First of all, you can ask for recommendations from friends, colleagues or family members who have worked with a wine expert in the past. If you visited a winery and were impressed by the work of the wine expert, don't hesitate to ask if they're available to work with you. Another way to find a wine expert is to consult specialized online directories in the wine industry. These directories allow you to find wine experts in your area or even in distant wine regions, depending on your needs. You can also contact wine expert associations for recommendations or to find professionals in your area. If you're considering working with a wine expert, it's important to check their references and experience. You can ask the wine expert to provide you with references from past or current clients. It may also be helpful to search for online reviews to see what clients are saying about the wine expert. Finally, you can attend wine shows and fairs to meet wine experts. These events often offer wine tastings and presentations from industry professionals, which can help you find a qualified wine expert to work with. In summary, there are many ways to find a wine expert to help you with your passion for wine tasting and visiting vineyards. Asking for recommendations, consulting online directories, contacting wine expert associations, checking references and experience, and attending wine events are all ways to find an experienced wine expert who will meet your wine-related needs.

The rates charged by an oenologist.

Winemaking is an art that dates back centuries and has undergone great evolution over the years. The vineyards in the country produce prestigious and world-renowned wines. If you are a wine enthusiast, a visit to a wine expert is a must. The fees of a wine expert depend on various factors such as the location of the cellar, the quality of the wines, the reputation of the appellation, and of course, the services provided. The fees for wine tastings and vineyard visits vary depending on the regions and appellations. In Alsace, the wine route is very popular for its white wines, particularly Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. The fees for wine expert services in this region are generally affordable. In Languedoc-Roussillon, a winemaker can offer you a cellar tour and wine tasting to discover Southwestern wines such as Grenache and Syrah. The wines of Luberon and Ventoux are also worth discovering in this region. In Bordeaux, the fees are higher because of the fame of the wines, chateaux, and grand crus. You can opt for a cellar tour in the prestigious vineyards such as Medoc and Cotes-de-Provence. The Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties are grown there to produce world-renowned red wines. In Burgundy, the fees of a wine expert can be high due to the quality of the wines produced. The wines in this region are made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes grown on hectares of vineyards. The cellar tour and wine tasting can enable you to discover prestigious appellations such as grand crus of Cote de Nuits and Route des Grands Crus. In the Loire Valley, you can discover dry and sweet white wines such as Savennieres, Layon, and Muscadet. Country wines and IGP wines are also produced. The fees of a wine expert are affordable in this region, and you can also visit the typical troglodyte cellars of the region. Finally, for lovers of organic and biodynamic wines, vineyard visits and wine tastings centered on natural wines in regions such as the Jura Wine Route or the Roussillon Wine Route are a must. Whether you are a beginner wine enthusiast or an experienced sommelier, the fees of a wine expert for cellar tours and wine tastings will allow you to discover the wines of different regions and understand the oenological techniques used to produce these delicious nectars. Do not hesitate to seek advice from a wine merchant on wines to purchase and food and wine pairing.

How to choose a good oenologist?

Choosing a wine expert is an important process for wine lovers who are looking to deepen their knowledge and discover new vintages. Whether you want to participate in a wine tasting or uncover the secrets of winemaking, finding the right wine expert is essential to ensure an unforgettable experience. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a wine expert. Firstly, it is important to check the reputation of the wine expert. Reputation can be checked online by consulting customer reviews and user comments on social media or specialized websites. You can also ask for recommendations from friends, acquaintances, or members of a wine tasting club. Secondly, it is important to choose a wine expert who specializes in the region you want to discover. The wine regions of France are numerous and each produces specific and unique wines. A wine expert who knows the region and its appellations well can give you the best advice to appreciate the local wines. The level of expertise of the wine expert is also an important factor. An experienced wine expert will have more in-depth knowledge of winemaking techniques and will be able to guide you in your choice of wines. Some wine experts are certified sommeliers or professional tasters, which can guarantee a high level of knowledge. The services offered by the wine expert should also be taken into account. Some wine experts may offer cellar visits and tastings, while others may offer more advanced wine courses. Make sure that the services offered meet your expectations and needs. Finally, it is important to consider the fees charged by the wine expert. Fees can vary considerably depending on the wine expert's experience, region, and services offered. It is important to choose a wine expert whose fees are within your budget, while ensuring that the quality of services offered meets your expectations.
