If the time and good surf allows, your captain will also take you trolling along the beachfront. Fish We Catch Off-shore

Red snapper, family lutjanidae, snappers - lutjanus campechanus.

Description : color pinkish red over entire body, whitish below; long triangular snout; anal fin sharply pointed; no dark lateral spot.

Similar Fish : vermilion snapper,R. aurorubens.

Where Found : OFFSHORE on the continental shelf, more plentiful off the panhandle than in south or middle Florida.

Size : to 20 pounds.

Remarks : juveniles occur over sandy or mud bottoms and are often taken in shrimp trawls; adults may live more than 20 years, and attain 35 pounds or more; sexual maturity attained at age 2; spawns June to October; feeds on crustaceans and fish.

Gag Grouper

Family Seranidae, SEA BASSES AND GROUPER Mycteroperca microlepis

Description : Brownish gray in color with dark worm-like markings on sides; strong serrated spur at bottom margin of preopercle, less noticeable in large specimens; fins dark, with anal and caudal having white margin. Often confused with black grouper; tail of gag is slightly concave, black is square; gag has white margin on anal and caudal fins, black does not; under 10 pounds, gag's spur on preopercle is distinctive, where black is gently rounded.

Where Found : Adults OFFSHORE over rocks and reefs; juveniles occur in seagrass beds INSHORE.

Size : Common to 25 punds.

Remarks : Forms spawning aggregations in water no shallower than 120 feet in Middle Grounds area, January through March; current research to identify similar aggregations off Atlantic coast is ongoing. young gags are predominantly female, transforming into males as they grow larger; feeds on fish and squid.

Family Carangidae, JACKS and POMPANOS - Seriola dumerili

Description : dark stripe (variably present) extends from nose to in front of dorsal fin and "lights up" when fish is in feeding mode; no scutes; soft dorsal base less than twice the length of the anal fin base.

Similar Fish : other Seriola.

Where Found : OFFSHORE species associated with rocky reefs, debris, and wrecks, typically in 60 - 240 feet of water; sometimes caught NEARSHORE in south Florida; juveniles associated with floating objects and may occur in water less than 30 feet deep.

Size : common to 40 pounds.

Remarks : largest of the jacks; thought to spawn OFFSHORE throughout most of the year; feeds on squid, fish, and crustaceans.

We have been in the Orange Beach fishing charter business since 1999 and a constant has been F/V Reel Surprise. She is a 65’ Alabama-built boat, 18’ wide, has two restrooms, and lots of AIR CONDITIONING. Our goal has always been to make our trips as fun and entertaining as we can. Our deep sea fishing trip was a private chartered trip. Over a total of 100 fish were caught and kept between 13 guys. The snapper max was met per person. The charter was great as well as the deckhands and Captain. We are definitely booking it again for next year.

Third time's a charm after having two previous reservations with Reel Surprise cancelled because of a hurricane. Today's six-hour trip with them couldn't have been any better--great weather, great crew and great fishing combined to make a memorable experience. The crew was more than helpful to everyone on the boat and I doubt that there was anyone who didn't catch a keeper or two. It was a day to remember!

My husband and I caught several fish, but had to throw some back because Snapper was out of season. We went on a 4 hour trip, I think everyone on board caught some fish. Deckhands were busy, polite and helpful. I got a pretty big Trigger. Fun time.

Reel Surprise charters was an amazing experience!!! The crew was amazing & the captain was very personable!! The captain put you right on the fish & the crew were very fast as far as taking the fish off your line & even baited mine a lot of times. Mind you I’m definitely capable of doing it but they were very kind & courteous without being to overly helpful. The captain explained how to fish in the deep waters & the crew helped you & gave you tips of their own to maximize your experience catching fish. Great company & will definitely use again!!!!!

We went on this charter sept 10 th and had such a great time we did it again on the 12tth, yep twice in same week, we thought the deck hands was amazing on both trips and always at our beck and call. Overnighters, offshore deep sea fishing on an overnighter for sportfishermen, call for more information, welcome to intimidator deep sea sportfishing inc. we are a full service charter fishing business that offers trips from 6 hour family excursions to 3 day offshore extravaganzas..

These are very productive offshore deep sea fishing trips and have quickly become one of our most popular sportfishermen trips that can be customized to fishing styles or an individual’s needs. We are very diverse and can offer you a whole range of opportunities or angling possibilities. We specialize in overnight trips, but offer trips to 3 days for the ones who just cannot get enough offshore deep sea fishing.

A typical overnighter usually leaves the dock about 6 am. Most of the overnight trips that we run are combo bottom / offshore deep sea fishing trips . We will start the day in some cases doing some live bait fishing. We will always make every attempt to catch all the live bait that we need before departing in the morning, it is always best to try and catch some fresh live bait just off the beach in about 20 feet of water. Most of the live bait that you will find in the “Intimidator’s 350 gallon live well” will be Pinfish, Croakers, Pig Fish and Menhaden. The bait that is usually caught in the gulf the morning of the trip will be Pilchards (aka Greenies or Elvis’), Herring, Thread fin’s, Cigar Minnows, and Atlantic Bumper fish (aka Crazy fish). The live bait can be the most important key to most any trip so the time spent here will be well served.

After we finish live bait fishing, we will usually put out some hi-speed trolling lures for Wahoo , King Mackerel and other fish that can be caught trolling while on the way to the fishing grounds. At this point, we will usually be working on whatever type breakfast that you may like to bring along. From there it is a flurry of activity rigging tackle, cutting bait, and giving everything a thorough inspection before the action commences.

After a good ride offshore, we will start on our bottom deep sea fishing for Red Snapper , Grouper , Scamps , Vermilion Snapper and Triggerfish depending on the time of year that you go fishing. This type of offshore saltwater fishing will be done on one of the thousands of private reefs or on some natural bottom that has taken years to acquire. Usually everyone is fishing at once, and this creates a lot of fun and excitement in competing with the other sportfishermen aboard and just having a good time.

While all this is going on, it is commonplace to have your lunch smoking away on the grill . At the conclusion of the bottom fishing we will usually work our way further offshore to give everyone time to eat lunch and catch their breath to fish around some of the many oil rigs or deeper rock and chase the Amberjacks or maybe deep drop for Grouper or Tilefish. From here we can continue even further offshore to give the Tuna , Wahoo or Dolphins a shot late on the first day.

On the way offshore, we will start cooking supper and with our focus shifting to the offshore deep sea fishing for Yellow-fin Tuna , Black-Fin Tuna , Dolphin , Wahoo and the occasional Marlin .

Once the offshore fishing has begun, we will employ a number of successful tactics and have three very distinct but different times for catching fish. First, is the evening bite which may be done a number of ways but Trolling or Kite fishing with live bait have proven to be the best effort for Sportfishermen in this time frame.

After the sun goes down and everyone is enjoying their dinners, we may try to deep sea jig some Black fin Tunas or possibly try to chum up a yellow fin right under the boat if the conditions will allow. As serious sportfishermen, it is not uncommon for us to fish well into the night. With the new water maker onboard there will be enough water for a hot shower. Early the second morning before the sun comes up, we usually try some more deep jigging and chunking for the Yellow-fin’s until right at the crack of daylight and then we may either go back to the Kite or trolling methods. As the sun comes up, it is a very exciting time to be on the deck with the anticipation of the “Big Bite” at any moment.

If the bite is productive we will certainly stick with it until the bite slows or it is time to head back in. This will always be our longest ride of the trip but after a very exciting offshore deep sea fishing trip and all the fun, this is when the card games and Satellite TV will come in useful. However, most people will sleep all the way to the dock. Most trips return to the dock after lunch anywhere from 12-4 pm depending on the length of the ride. Some of the trips offshore will carry you to points well offshore - some as far as 75 to 150 miles from port. No two trips are ever the same and there is always some fun and exciting things to do on a trip like this that will set it apart from others. Nowhere else will you find a camping trip, fishing trip, and picnic like this!

The fish we target range in variety.  We practice conservation, so please let us know how many you want to keep and lets release the rest.   We offer catch and release fishing, and most always take plenty back to the dock if you choose.   Bottomfishing includes fishing for red snapper, vermillion and white snapper, triggerfish, ,lane snapper, amberjack,  grouper. Good chance to hook into a big shark.  While trolling we catch king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, bonita, jack crevalle, bull redfish.  You can do fresh catch at Wolf Bay Lodge located just minuites from the boat and enjoy what you just caught.  Your deckhands will always provide first class service, or I will personally see that they walk the plank!

We have a world-class fishery at our fingertips just right off our shores.  Due to very tough regulations guarding our fishery and our world class reef zone with more than 17,000 artificial reefs, we have one of the finest fisheries in the world.  It is true we are not able, due to regulation, to bag nearly as many fish as we have in the past but due to this, our fishery has exploded with more fish that I have ever seen in my 30 years of fishing here.   We consistantly harvest plenty of fish to eat on most all of our trips, but what we bring back to the dock does not tell the story of the fishing trip in itself.  Our customers have the ability to catch and release big amberjack and red snapper year round.  Most of our trips, we can actually wear you out fighting big fish.  It's called sport fishing, having fun with light tackle and live bait,  keeping what we need for eating and releasing the rest to fight another day.

The Distraction Charter Boat only offers private trips for 1 to 6 people .   This means only you and your group will be on the charter boat during the trip.   The price you pay for your charter is based on the number of hours you are wanting to go deep sea fishing.

Depending on the time of year you want to go fishing, we offer the following charter trips :    Our most popular trips are 6 hour as well as a Full Day 10 Hour trip.   Both of these trips are fun and allow you to catch fish.  This full day trip can get you way off shore to do some deep water fishing for some unusual fish species.   The longer the trip you book, the greater the opportunity for you to try and catch more species of fish.  Our fishing rates are very competitive for boats our size. There is a direct correlation between the price of the trip, distance offshore and species of fish you can catch near Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

The Fish You Can Catch

Offshore and Deep-Sea Fishing Charters

Deep-Sea Fishing, Reef Fishing and even Sport Fishing are also known as offshore fishing in Orange Beach, Alabama. This is because we have to go further offshore or away from the shore to catch certain saltwater fish species. Some species can be found near the beach, but most are out in deeper water.

We offer deep-sea, offshore, and nearshore family fishing trips for everyone. Depending on the time of the year you want to go fishing, we can catch fish. Some species are migratory by nature. That means that they pass through during certain times of the year and may not be available during other times. An example of this is the Spring Cobia migration run that begins during the middle of March each year and continues until the end of April. The rest of the year, these magnificent game fish can be found further offshore on reefs or oil rigs but are seldom seen right off the beach like they were during the spring. Spanish Mackerel are also highly migratory and move in during March of each year. After the spring migration, these fish are spread out in smaller numbers along the nearshore waters.

Deep-Sea Fishing and Reef Fishing

The most popular fishing available in the waters south is known as deep-sea fishing or reef fishing. Everyone who knows anything about Alabama’s saltwater fishery has undoubtedly heard about our artificial reef building program. Alabama’s waters primarily cover a sand or mud bottom or ocean floor. This habitat used to be uninhabited by most reef fish. With the implementation of the reef-building program, tens of thousands of artificial reefs have been built and remain there today. These reefs range in size, but most are about the size of a Passenger Car, School Bus, Army Tank, WWII Liberty Ships, Tug Boats, Empty Barges, Chicken Cages, Concrete Pipe, Concrete Pyramids, and anything Steel or Heavy. The State of Alabama now prohibits the building of reefs by using cars, trucks, or anything painted that may be toxic or harm the environment. The good thing about having so many fishing sites is that they produce a habitat for reef fish.

Deep-Sea Fishing Charters Offshore

Deep-sea fishing is commonly known as reef fishing or bottom fishing. These types of offshore fishing trips are where the charter fishing boat stops and holds the boat directly above the reef. This is the trip where everyone on the charter boat lets their lines and baited hooks down below the boat to get a bite. In Alabama, most of the reefs are artificial. However, there are some rocks and ledges that we fish. We do not have coral reefs as you see on television. The reef fishing is a lot of fun. You never know what you will catch. As with any type of reef, many different species of fish live there. You have baitfish that stay close to the wreck for safety. You have larger fish that feed on the smaller fish. You also have bigger fish that move around from reef to reef to feed on the reefs inhabitants.

​Orange Beach’s common reef fish include Shark, Snapper, Jacks, Grouper, Porgies, Eels, Barracuda, Triggerfish, Tile Fish, Ribbon Fish, Tomtate and Sea Bass. It is not uncommon for the migratory fish like Mackerel and Wahoo to show up and feed at the reefs.

Booking Your Offshore Fishing Charter Boat Is Easy

Offshore fishing in Alabama encompasses both trolling, reef fishing, and sight fishing. Offshore Trolling charter fishing Trips

The first offshore fishing we would like to define is trolling. Offshore trolling trips are fun and exciting for even the most experienced anglers. Trolling is a technique used to catch migratory fish like Mackerel, Crevalle Jacks, Tuna and Marlin. This method is used by pulling baits behind the boat at a slow or high rate of speed. Not everyone fishes at the same time. You take turns fighting fish as they hit or strike. High speed trolling is commonly used when going offshore and returning home. These high speed trolling trips produce fast-swimming fish like Mackerel and Wahoo. Slow speed trolling the preferred method to catch Mackerel, Jack Crevalle, Tuna, and Marlin. The Marlin, Tuna, and Wahoo are usually found further offshore in deep water that ranges from 200 to 8000 feet deep.

Offshore trolling trips for Mackerel, Jack Crevalle can be accomplished on a 4-hour journey. Sometimes these short trips stay nearshore or end up 8 to 10 miles out. Trolling trips for Wahoo, Tuna and Marlin are usually full-day or multi-day in length. That is because you have to go way offshore to or too deep seas to get to where they live. The ride out to Wahoo and Tuna country in Alabama is 3 to 6 hours or more in length, depending on the boat you are on. As you can see, to fish for certain fish, you have to spend more time getting to where they live. So, if you’re interested in a trolling trip, please tell us what you would like to do in the reservations section of this website. It will help us understand precisely what you are looking for in a trolling charter.

Sight Fishing For Cobia and Bull Reds

Another type of offshore fishing is called sight fishing. These trips can be a lot of fun. The Cobia is the first fish that comes to mind. They move through during March and April each year. Cobia fishing is like guided Turkey hunting. You may ride for hours and see nothing. Just when you think you might not see anything, there he is. The Cobia may be alone or with two or three more similar sized fish. We use live eels to cast to them and try to get them to bite. They are 20 to 100 pounds each.

The  Bull Redfish  school up by the thousands during the winter months and make some of the most fun fishing opportunities you have ever seen. We look for birds diving, and we let you cast your lure into them and hook them up for a fight of a lifetime. Bull Redfish weigh between 18 and 40 pounds each.
