Despite the fact that 1X mountain bikes are currently popular. An exaggerated 30 different speeds, on the other hand, is a very rare presence in any brand of mountain bike.

It increases the adaptation and learning curve, but this does not deter riders who enjoy multi-speed mountain bikes. Of course, the Trek 6000 is still a 27-speed mountain bike in 2009.

The 2009 model had a RockShox Dart 3 shock fork, but the latest 6000 has an SR Suntour XCR-RL shock fork with 100mm of travel.

This is the bare minimum for trail riding, and it’s difficult to match the Trek in terms of shock absorption when compared to the 70-90mm shock forks on cheap mountain bikes.

The shock fork has enough damping effect for riding on rocky roads, but it cannot be ridden intensely for long periods of time, making it unsuitable for intermediate riders.

When the road is flat, the spring knob can be used to suspend the work of the shock fork, allowing the rider to convert the power to maximum and increase the speed of the ride.

26×2.2″ tires (4.0/5)

The Trek 6000 rides on Bontrager 26×2.2″ tires, which are narrow mountain tires with more limitations for riding in difficult terrain. It can ride smoothly and without skidding on muddy trails.

On rough surfaces, it also effectively converts riding power into tire grip.

Hydraulic disc brakes (5/5)

The brakes on the new 6000 mountain bike have been improved. The 2009 Trek 6000 still used Avid BB 5 mechanical brakes, but the new model uses advanced and popular hydraulic disc brakes that require less maintenance or are maintenance-free.

Trek 820 has two types of frames, if you are a female rider, you can consider Trek 820 WSD, a frame suitable for female riding, and the Sky Blue paint is very bright.

There aren’t many differences between the Trek 820 and Trek 6000 in terms of configuration. The Trek 820 is a low-cost mountain bike that can meet the needs of commuting and low-difficulty mountain riding at a low cost.

However, if you enjoy mountain riding, the Trek 6000 is ideal. 30 speeds almost completely outperform the 21-speed configuration, and while 10 and 11 speeds are popular now, I still prefer the 30-speed Trek 6000.

Excellent maneuverability is provided by hydraulic disc brakes. There are also wider tires, which add to the difficulty of mountain riding. The 6000 is an excellent choice for improved mountain riding.

Trek Marlin 5 mountain bike vs Trek 6000

The Trek Marlin 5 is very similar to the Trek 6000, and it is not very expensive.

More details, such as the internal alignment, which is cleaner than the Trek 6000 and protects the cables from damage, have been optimized. The same hydraulic disc brakes, no discernible difference in braking effect.

The Trek Marlin 5’s style is enhanced by the gorgeous paint color.

Young people may dislike the dull black, and the bright colors make for a more visually appealing commuter ride.

However, the speed is limited to a 2X8 configuration, which is slightly slower than the Trek 6000. The Trek Marlin 5 is an excellent choice for anyone new to trail riding or looking for a comfortable, stable commuter with the ruggedness of a true mountain bike.

The Trek Marlin 5 is also an excellent replacement for the Trek 6000.

Schwinn High Timber VS Trek 6000

The Schwinn High Timber is one of the best options for those on a tight budget who want to get their hands on one right away, and it also comes with a good warranty.

The Schwinn High Timber is reasonably priced, but it lacks the features of the Trek 6000. 27.5-inch medium size tires are also an inexpensive tire size to replace.

The Schwinn High Timber has mechanical disc brakes front and rear, without the ease of braking with hydraulic brakes, but compared to The Schwinn High Timber is more for the casual rider, and at an affordable price, many entry-level riders like them.

Overall, the Trek 6000 mountain bike is a solid, affordable choice if you need a general-use bike for casual riding or commuting. It has a lot of features you’ll find in higher-end mountain bikes like disc brakes and a suspension fork. It definitely isn’t designed for hardcore riding though.

I’ve ridden hardtail mountain bikes my entire life, and my first bike was a budget model from Trek. For this review I’ve dug into all the specs, components, and details on this bike to give you the information you need.

‍ Trek 6000 Performance

If you’re looking for a capable all-around bike that’s equally happy on your commute, neighborhood bike paths, and flowy singletrack trails, the Trek 6000 is a great choice.

This isn’t an all-out trail shredding machine by any means, but it is plenty capable for most recreational riders wanting to get out on some singletrack and have fun. And it still maintains plenty of practicality for everyday use.

If you are planning to tackle highly technical, rocky descents, you’ll probably be better served by a more aggressive bike. With it’s fairly traditional geometry, 26 inch wheels, and limited suspension travel, the Trek 6000 just isn’t cut out for hardcore riding.

On steep, rough trails, you’ll pretty quickly find yourself out of your element and clinging on for dear life.

Where this bike shines, though, is on gentler, flowy singletrack. The cross-country-oriented geometry, small wheels, and hardtail handling make this bike feel very playful and responsive on smoother trails.

The Shimano 3x10 drivetrain gets you plenty of low gear range, especially when you take the 26” wheels into consideration. The lowest gear gives you a 24-tooth chainring in the front to a 36-tooth cog in the back, which is great for winching your way up steep hills.

This bike is also fairly lightweight for an entry-level bike, and it’s cross-country geometry puts you in a very efficient climbing position.

The smaller 26-inch wheels on the Trek 6000 may not roll over obstacles as well as bigger 29-inch wheels, but they do make this bike feel very maneuverable when climbing.

If you’re looking for an older entry-level mountain bike like this, you probably are wanting something versatile that can be your only bike for everything. I commute to work every day on my hardtail mountain bike, so I’ll be the first to tell you that you can definitely use a mountain bike for more than trails.

The Trek 6000 is a perfectly capable bike for commuting or just cruising around town. It has built-in fender mounts and mounting points for a rack to carry your gear.

Trek 6000 Frame and Geometry

The Trek 6000 mountain bike is built around a fairly basic, but well-made alluminum frame.

This frame has plenty of modern features built-in like a formed top tube, monostay seatstay, forged dropouts w/ rack mounts, a threaded bottom bracket shell, and disc brake post mounts.

Specs and Components

The Trek 6000 comes equipped with a Shimano Deore drivetrain with a triple chainring up front and a 10-speed cassette in the back. This drivetrain has plenty of range for everything from cruising on the road to winching your way up technical climbs.

The Shimano Deore XT m780 Shadow rear derailleur offers very smooth and crisp shifting performance. This is a reliable drivetrain that you can rely on to get your power to the ground no matter the conditions.

As a hardtail, the Trek 6000 has no rear suspension. This makes it much more efficient for pedaling uphill or on flat sections, but also means you’ll feel more trail chatter than a full suspension bike.

In the front you get a Suntour XCR-RL coil spring suspension fork with a remote lockout. The 100mm of travel isn’t a ton, but for the type of riding you’ll do with this bike, it’s more than enough.

This fork isn’t the lightest weight on the market, but it offers surprisingly good performance for a budget fork. It is smooth throughout it’s travel and does a good job at smoothing out rocks and roots in the trail.

The remote lockout is an awesome feature that lets you quickly switch between modes for variable riding.

This bike comes equipped with Shimano m446 hydraulic disc brakes that provide ample stopping power and decent modulation. It’s really awesome to see Trek packing in performance-oriented components like this at an entry-level price.

Brakes are definitely an undervalued component of any bicycle, but they are massively important for riding, especially on trails. Having powerful brakes will give you more confidence and control to ride faster on the descents.

If you are coming from mechanical disc brakes or rim brakes, you’ll be blown away by how much better these hydraulic brakes are.

The Trek 6000 rides on a pair of Bontrager hubs laced to Shimano M435 alloy hubs. Overall this wheelset is about what you’d expect in an older budget bike. These wheels are plenty sturdy, but a bit on the heavy side.

The biggest thing to note here is that you’re stuck with old-school 26-inch wheels. The mountain bike industry as a whole has shifted to 29-inch or 27.5-inch wheels, so this bicycle is definitely showing it’s age here.

For casual riding, the smaller wheels won’t be a problem, but 29-inch wheels definitely are smoother and faster on the trail.

Those 26-inch wheels are wrapped with some pretty basic Bontrager XR1 wire bead tires in a 2.2-inch width. These should be adequate for most casual trail riding, but you may find yourself short on grip through loose sections of trail.

Other Components

Other component highlights include the Bontrager race lite step and grips, the surprisingly comfortable saddle, and the low rise handlebar that puts you in a great balanced position.

Overall, this is a quite comfortable bike for all sorts of riding.

Competition for the Trek 6000

The Trek 6000 is no longer in production, so you may be interested in looking at some more modern alternatives that are still available on the market. Here are a few bikes that are pretty comparable to the Trek 6000.

Trek 6000 vs Trek Marlin 4

The Trek Marlin 4 is probably the most similar ride you’ll be able to find to the Trek 6000. It has a Shimano 3x drivetrain, a Suntour suspension fork, and a basic but fairly lightweight aluminum frame

The Trek 6000 actually has some advantages over the Marlin 4, which only has a 7-speed cassette and mechanical disc brakes.

Where the Marlin 4 shows it’s advantage is in the more modern wheel size choices. You can get either 27.5 or 29-inch wheels, which makes for a much smoother more capable ride overall.

With the Marlin 4, Trek has started following the trend of matching wheel size to frame size. On the smaller sizes you get 27.5-inch wheels, while larger sizes are equipped with 29ers.

Trek 6000 vs Canyon Grand Canyon

Canyon is a modern direct-to-consumer manufacturer that uses their business model to offer capable bikes at impressively low prices. The Grand Canyon is their entry-level mountain bike model that packs in an impressive range of performance and features at a low price.

If you’re looking for a capable modern mountain bike on a budget, the Canyon Grand Canyon may offer the best price-to-performance ratio on the market. Seriously, it’s incredible that they were able to deliver so much at this price.

The Grand Canyon has fairly aggressive modern geometry with a slack head tube angle and steep seat tube angle. It will definitely feel much more confident on trails than the Trek 6000.

You also get a very well-spec’d component selection. You get Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes for fantastic stopping power, a smooth-shifting Shimano 12-speed drivetrain, a Suntour XCR coil suspension fork, and larger wheel sizes for smooth-rolling performance.

Trek 6000 vs Specialized Rockhopper Sport 29

The Rockhopper is Specialized’s entry-level hardtail mountain bike, and it’s one of the most popular mountain bikes out there.

The Specialized Rockhopper Sport 29 is the second lowest bike in the Rockhopper range. It has a Microshift 2 by 9 speed drivetrain, a Suntour XCM coil suspension fork, Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes, and an aluminum frame with cross-country-inspired geometry.

Overall, you can expect fairly similar performance from the Specialized Rockhopper Sport 29 and the Trek 6000. The big difference again is going to be in wheel size. There is a reason you don’t see modern mountain bikes with 26-inch wheels.

Just having the larger wheels makes the Specialized Rockhopper feel more fun and capable on most trail riding. It rolls faster and smoother and is easier to keep in control.

Where to Buy the Trek 6000

Unfortunately, the Trek 6000 went out of production in 2012, so it is no longer available from Trek. You can still find a good used one near you or online. BikeExchange is a great online marketplace where you can shop for used bikes.

Bicycle Blue Book lists the fair value of the 2012 model of the Trek 6000 at around $300, so there are definitely good deals to be had. If you can find one used, you’ll be getting a lot of bike for your money.

Trek 6000 Bike 1998 or Older

Light weight. Quality components from factory.

None that I know of.

Had this bike over 20 years and still enjoy riding it. I changed the seat but that is the only non-stock part on the bike. It handles dirt easily with stock tires and rocky trails with tree roots without a problem (standing up riding). It also handles smooth pavement well; I didn't notice a huge effort difference compared to my 1989 Trek high end road bike but maybe that was because people exaggerated the expected difference. I finally wore out the tires and chain/cassette and had them replaced during a recent tune-up. I got a "new" bike (with an iPhone holder- Stava app) good for another 20 years for about $200. I still get complements on the bike's looks!

None that I've found. Going down steep (relatively smooth) dirt trails at over 30 MPH is as hard as I've pushed it and that was my limit, not the bike's.

This bike has gone the distance with me. I've had it 18 years and thought I wanted to buy a new bike. I cleaned it up, bought some new tubes and I wouldn't think of getting a new one. No point. All I need is a new saddle and she will easily last another 18. I'll be almost 70 by then. Good purchase all around.

Sometimes rough on the pavement with the knobbies, but it is still worth the rough to have them when you need them.

Love my Trek 6000. I bought her for the aluminum frame. I wanted a flex that was better than my old road bikes. My legs were too strong for the older frames and I could put a twist on a road bike climbing a hill. This was a great transition to get away from racing and it has gone the distance and still is rolling.

Great reliabily -still looks BAD.Will stay with most any of the new bikes.Easy shifting.Running with less nobby tires and that works great on the street on light off road-a little challenging off road.Overall a GREAT BIKE.Looked at buying a UTOPIA just today but "old reliable" might just keep me from buying it.

Cable tends to stretch.

Amazing Quality. Have had this bike since I was 13 years old and I just replaced the rear gear shift last year (2010).

If there is one, I haven't found it.

Probably the best bike for the money at the time of purchase. I am hesitant to even buy another bike considering that I just recently had to replace a shifter.

Great bike, nice components and fairly light. Handles well and can take so abuse, very nice suspention, brakes and DEORE shifters, it goes pretty fast.

Tyres are very thin, not very grippy, and continually punture, saddle offers very little compfort.

A great bike for anyone looking for just that little bit more than the average mountain bike. Apart from the two minor setbacks I have mentioned that can be rectified in a jiffy, its a definate hit!

The frame has not broken yet.

The componet quality is suspect. I am on my third chain in three years. I have had eight broken spokes. and now the high gear skips.

I bought this bike to commute to work 2.8 miles one way. I have never been of the pavement with it. It is far too fragile a bike for me. The last chain snapped while riding up a hill, not vey much fun. I originally went looking for a police model since watching the police train by riding down steps led me to believe these were heavy duty bikes. The bike shop said the 6000 was equivalent. I feel that I really got screwed on this bike. My 38 year old Schwinn rolls better and turns sharper and I only had to replace the chain once after 6258 miles.

This is only the second bike I have purchased. I still ride my 1972 Schwinn Varsiy whenever (too often) that the Trek is broken.

Pretty light, good components for the price, can take a beating (not for downhilling or freeriding though, as it is a hardtail)

Tires aren't very grippy

Great bike, can definitely take a beating from a beginner, or a more experienced rider. Handles well, and not too wide so you can get through those narrow parts on the trail. The stock tires kind of suck, and slide everywhere, but those are easy to upgrade, plus, you'll probably want to go tubeless pretty quickly anyway. This frame is built to last, so once you get more into it, put a dual air suspension fork, some SRAM X7 or X9 components (unless you switch everything at one time to Shiamno, but don't try to mix shimano and SRAM), and you've got one helluva bike.

Total trail confidence A bike's geometry is the defining framework it's built on, and the Marlin is a true mountain bike at it's core. Its measurements are perfectly dialled to give you a confidence-inspiring, planted feel when you’re rolling down steep and bumpy trails, while keeping it easy to pedal back to the top when you’re ready for another lap.

Marlin’s head tube (a) sits at a slacker (more acute) angle. The slacker head tube angle (b) moves your front wheel further in front of you. Take it to the trail, and this slacker head tube angle (b) boosts stability and control for confidence when descents get steep and rowdy.

To balance a slacker head tube angle (b) , the Marlin features a steeper (more upright) seat tube angle (d) . A steeper seat tube (c) lets you get the most out of every pedal stroke, so you don’t waste power on the climb to the top.

The Marlin is equipped with a short stem and wider handlebar for more direct control and responsiveness when you’re manoeuvring through rocks and roots. Meanwhile, a longer reach (e) gives you extra stability so you can ride faster and more confidently.

Guppies are among the first choices for beginners in freshwater aquariums, being resilient and prolific tropical fish. Moscow Blue Guppy, as with other guppy breeds, especially the males, has fantastic colors.

These characteristics are enough to place them among special guppy breeds. While the origin of guppies is South America, this breed is not found in natural environments. It has been artificially bred by experienced hobbyists.

The most distinctive physical features that differentiate Moscow Blue Guppy and its variants from others are their unique colors, being larger than regular guppies, and the bright, metallic areas around their heads.

Although it’s not certain, the breeding of this species was first done in Russia in the 1980s. Later, in a competition held in America in 1998, it announced its name to the whole world by ranking third.

Despite being a single color, they have a very deep and special shade. It is these characteristics that make them stand out among special guppy breeds.

In addition to the Blue Moscow Guppy, other popular variants can be listed as follows:

• Red Moscow Guppy (Red Moscow Guppy): This variant is the most challenging to produce. From time to time, you may see this species not exactly in red but in orange shades.
• Black Moscow Guppy (Black Moscow Guppy): Guppies, known for their colorful species, have also proven their beauty in black. To understand whether it’s a Moscow breed, one can look at the dark gray, blue, and brown areas in their abdominal regions.
• Purple Moscow Guppy (Purple Moscow Guppy): Just like in red, producing purebred purple moscow is quite challenging. They emerge from the mating of red and blue Moscow. Moreover, Purple Moscow has also managed to be the most sought-after Moscow breed.
• Green Moscow Guppy (Green Moscow Guppy): With its metallic, turquoise-tinted green colors, it’s my favorite type. Although every variant has metallic colors, the Green Moscow undoubtedly showcases it best.
• Moscow Dark Blue Guppy: This breed is almost the same. As the name suggests, it has dark black-blue tail and abdominal colors, especially more noticeable in females.

Sexual Dimorphism

It’s quite challenging to determine the sex of the fish when they are young, and you might not make a correct distinction. Determining the sex of adult blue Moscow guppies is not very different from regular species.

As guppies grow, it will become much easier for you to understand the difference between their genders. The Moscow blue female is noticeably larger compared to the males. Additionally, the abdominal area of the female appears larger than the males. Males, on the other hand, are smaller compared to females and their colors are much more vivid.

Additionally, you can also determine their sex by looking at their anal fins. The anal fin of males is more pointed and large, whereas in females, it’s smaller and resembles a square shape.

Guppies are among the species that are easy to care for. However, you should pay more attention to special breeds than regular ones.

Feeding and Food

The Blue Moscow Guppy is an omnivore (both carnivore and herbivore). Therefore, you can use both protein or plant-based feeds together.

They can be fed with ready flake foods, frozen, and fresh live foods. To maintain the health, beautiful colors, and form of your fish, it’s essential to use high-quality and diverse foods.

For the fish’s health, it’s best to feed them with plant-based flake foods, blood worms, and brine shrimps that have high nutritional value.

Aquarium Requirements

An aquarium with a capacity of 40 liters is sufficient for a few fish. However, if you want them to reproduce and multiply, the aquarium volume should be much larger.

While 40 liters is sufficient for 3-4 guppies, you definitely need to increase the volume for more. These fish are happier and healthier in planted aquariums. If possible, you can add a few types of plants to your aquarium.

Compatible Tank Mates

Special breed fish should not be kept with other guppy variants. Otherwise, special breeds and regular breeds will interbreed, resulting in mixed breeds.

Apart from guppies, some species you can add are:

• Swordtail Fish
• Corydoras Catfish
• Gourami Fish

Breeding Moscow Blue Guppies

The ideal male to female ratio for breeding is 1 to 3. This ensures that the females aren’t overly bothered and the fry production is better. Additionally, you can breed them by keeping males and females in separate aquariums.

By putting your selected pair in the same aquarium, you can facilitate the male to get the female ready for breeding. By repeating this process, you can achieve productive breeding.

To prevent adults from eating the fry, it’s recommended to remove them from the aquarium after birth.

To establish a pure breed, you can breed the two best fry from the new generation. By doing this for several generations, you’ll eventually achieve a fantastic, pure Moscow blue breed (ensure that the fish you get are not mixed breeds).

Moscow Blue Guppies are livebearers. This means that as soon as they give birth, the fry starts swimming freely. In about 4-5 weeks, they reach around 1 cm, and after this period, they become less sensitive.

To feed the fry, you can use flake foods and Artemia. Artemia is a very effective type of feed for the fry. You can provide this in addition to their regular feed once a day.

Deception and a Gamble: How Ukrainian Troops Invaded Russia

Planned in secrecy, the incursion was a bold move to upend the war’s dynamics and put Moscow on the defensive — a gambit that could also leave Ukraine exposed.

The scenes were decidedly Russian. A Gazprom facility. Flags with the country’s signature three horizontal stripes of white, blue and red. A Pyatyorochka supermarket.

The soldiers posting the videos, verified by The New York Times, were Ukrainian, almost giddily showing off just how easily they had pushed over the border and through Russian lines of defense in the past week.

In the Russian town of Sverdlikovo , a Ukrainian soldier climbed onto another’s shoulders, broke off the wooden post anchored to a town council building and threw the Russian flag to the ground. In Daryino , a town five miles to the west, other soldiers also grabbed a Russian flag. “Just throw it away,” a Ukrainian soldier said, grinning, as another flexed his muscles.

On Aug. 6, Ukraine launched an audacious military offensive , planned and executed in secrecy, with the aim of upending the dynamics of a war it has appeared to be losing, town by town, as Russian troops have ground forward in the east. The operation surprised even Kyiv’s closest allies, including the United States, and has pushed the limits of how Western military equipment would be permitted to be used inside Russian territory.

For Russia, it was a moment nearly as shocking as the mercenary Yevgeny V. Prigozhin’s march on Moscow in June 2023: the vaunted security state that President Vladimir V. Putin had built crumbled in the face of the surprise attack, failing in its basic task of protecting its citizens. And the unwritten social contract that has largely accompanied Mr. Putin’s 30-month campaign — that most Russians could get on with their normal lives even as he waged war — was cast into question anew.

Mostly on the defensive since a failed counteroffensive last year, Ukraine has pushed seven miles into Russia along a 25-mile front and taken dozens of Russian soldiers as prisoners, analysts and Russian officials say. The governor of Russia’s Kursk region said on Monday that Ukraine controls 28 towns and villages there. More than 132,000 people have been evacuated from nearby areas, Russian officials said.

“Russia brought war to others, and now it is coming home,” President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said in his Monday night address.

This offensive is a major gamble, especially since Russia dominates much of the frontline in Ukraine and has made significant inroads in the east. If Ukrainian troops are able to hold territory, they could stretch the capacity of Russian troops, deliver a major embarrassment for Mr. Putin and get a bargaining chip for any peace negotiations. But if Russia manages to push Ukrainian troops out of Kursk and simultaneously move forward in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian military leaders could be blamed for giving the Russians an opening to gain more ground, particularly in the Donetsk region.

U.S. officials told The Times they were given no formal heads-up about the high-risk mission — possibly because Ukrainian officials feared the Americans would try to persuade Ukraine to call it off, possibly because of Ukraine’s obsessive concern over leaks. Ukraine was also using American-supplied vehicles, arms and munitions, despite President Biden’s caution in May that Ukraine could only use American-made weapons inside Russia for limited self-defense strikes .

U.S. officials have said that Ukraine’s cross-border offensive didn’t violate that policy. “They are taking actions to protect themselves from attacks,” Sabrina Singh, the Pentagon’s deputy press secretary, said on Thursday.

Ukrainian officials have remained tight-lipped about the mission, including whether they intend to hold ground or fall back to defenses on their side of the border. Mr. Zelensky only acknowledged the operation publicly for the first time on Saturday. Ukrainian soldiers said they didn’t know the plan in advance. Military analysts who spend their days tracking the war said they were surprised.

“This is a good example of how a modern successful operation requires extreme operational security measures and deception,” said Pasi Paroinen, an analyst from the Black Bird Group, a Finland-based organization that analyzes battlefield footage. He added that if analysts couldn’t detect it, the Russians might not be able to either.

A quiet buildup

There were hints of what was to come.

Maps of the battlefield compiled by independent analysts show that soldiers from brigades long fighting in the east had moved discreetly into Ukraine’s Sumy region, just across the border from Kursk. A drone battalion from the 22nd Mechanized Brigade, which for nearly a year had defended the beleaguered frontline town of Chasiv Yar , was spotted near the border in mid-July. Troops from the 82nd Air Assault Brigade, engaged in fierce combat near Vovchansk in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, also shifted to the area. So did soldiers from the 80th Air Assault Brigade, which was at the forefront of fighting in the Kharkiv region this spring.

A few Russians noticed. A report was submitted to Russian military leadership about a month before the attack saying that “forces had been detected and that intelligence indicated preparations for an attack,” Andrei Gurulyov, a prominent member of Russia’s Parliament and a former high-ranking army officer, said after the incursion.

“But from the top came the order not to panic, and that those above know better,” Mr. Gurulyov lamented on national television .

Any movement could have been misconstrued as a new defensive posture. The Ukrainian Army sometimes splits brigades into smaller battalions scattered across the battlefield, and Sumy has long been rumored as a place where Russia might try opening a new front.

Few expected Ukraine to be able to launch a new offensive. Ukrainian brigades were running low on ammunition . Even as new weapons started arriving this spring and summer from the West, an almost fatalistic mood had taken hold of many Ukrainians, that they were losing ground in the east, foot by foot.

Ukraine shuffled parts of brigades into the Sumy area under the pretenses of training and picking up new equipment, said one brigade’s deputy commander, Lt. Col. Artem, who asked to be identified only by his first name and rank, in keeping with military protocol.

Heavy weaponry moved in. Soldiers piled into houses. The Ukrainians hid in plain sight. Officers were told to avoid wearing military uniforms when entering towns and cities so they didn’t draw attention, said one officer, who identified himself by his call sign, “Tykhyi,” in keeping with military protocol.

Some residents noticed the buildup. “Maybe they were reinforcing the border, or maybe building something?” said Elena Sima, the head of the Yunakivka district, about five miles from the border. “Everybody was guessing.”

In the village of Khotyn, the rumble of heavy, tracked vehicles woke up Natalya Vyalina, a 44-year-old kindergarten teacher, several nights in a row. She assumed others heard it, too. But in the village, she said, “nobody said anything.”

Even within the army, many were kept in the dark. Tykhyi — which means “quiet one” in Ukrainian — said some units were told of their mission only at the last moment.

On Aug. 3, Colonel Artem said, his brigade commander summoned senior officers to a meeting on the side of a forest road to announce the mission’s goals. To divert Russian troops to help fellow soldiers fighting in the eastern Donbas region. To push Russian artillery out of range of Sumy. To demoralize the Russians by showing their intelligence and planning failures.

‘Difficult challenges ahead’

The Ukrainian military hadn’t tried a serious push into Russia since the beginning of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Commandos had made quick forays across the border, one in May 2023 and another this March . They were claimed by two shadowy paramilitary groups with ties to Ukraine: the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom of Russia Legion.

Away from the fighting, the Kursk region posed an easier target than elsewhere along the 600-mile front in the east and south of Ukraine. It had fewer anti-armored vehicle ditches, fewer of the anti-tank pyramid obstacles known as dragon’s teeth and fewer manned fighting positions, said Brady Africk, an American analyst who maps Russia’s defenses . Russia also appeared to have sown fewer mines in the Kursk region than in occupied Ukrainian territories.

“Russia’s fortifications in Kursk are less dense than in other areas where Russian forces have built formidable defenses, such as in the south,” Mr. Africk said.

Just before noon on Aug. 6, Russian authorities claimed about 300 soldiers, more than 20 armored combat vehicles and 11 tanks from Ukraine’s 22nd Mechanized Brigade had crossed into the country. But those initial reports were greeted with a shrug. Disinformation and propaganda have become another kind of front in this war, and no one thought such an incursion made any tactical sense.

Hundreds more Ukrainian forces surged forward, breaching border checkpoints and pushing through two lines of defense. With fewer mines and fewer anti-military obstacles, Ukrainian mechanized brigades moved quickly .

Oleksandr, a Ukrainian infantry soldier who declined to give his last name, citing military security protocols, said many Russian soldiers fled as the Ukrainians pushed forward. Eight Russian soldiers surrendered at one checkpoint, he added.

Early Wednesday, senior U.S. officials woke up to a shock: They learned that more than 1,000 regular Ukrainian Army forces had crossed the border the day before, equipped with mobile air defenses and electronic-warfare equipment to jam Russian radar. Some were driving in armored vehicles sent by Germany and the United States. The soldiers appeared to be planning for an extended fight.

As late as Thursday, U.S. officials said, they were still seeking clarity from Ukrainian officials on the operation’s logic and rationale. Since then, Ukrainian leaders have briefed senior U.S. civilian officials and top military commanders on their goals.

The American officials said they were surprised at how well the operation has gone so far, but were skeptical that the Ukrainians could hold onto their gains. And in making the incursion, they said, Ukraine has created new vulnerabilities along the front where its forces are already stretched thin.

Videos show Ukrainian forces may have faced resistance at times, although there is not visual evidence of widespread losses.

Outside the Russian village of Kremyanoye, a video filmed by a Russian soldier shows Russian soldiers ransacking a captured Ukrainian armored vehicle, and taking away what appeared to be ammunition and other supplies. In another video filmed a few hundred meters away, a Russian soldier tried to rip a Ukrainian flag patch from the uniform of a dead soldier lying in the grass. Other footage, posted on Telegram by Russia’s Ministry of Defense, appeared to show Russian forces firing on a Ukrainian brigade around the Kursk region.

“We all have joy in our hearts,” the Ukrainian soldier, Oleksandr, said in a phone interview at 5 p.m. on Thursday, from somewhere inside Russia. “But we realize that there are still difficult challenges ahead.”

Some Ukrainian troops haven’t been able to stop themselves from publicizing their moves. They’ve posted videos and selfies from Russian towns like Sudzha or villages like Poroz and Dmitriukov, bragging about how they have finally taken the fight to Russia.

Outside a Pyatyorochka store in Sudzha, about six miles from the Russian border, one Ukrainian soldier said that a Ukrainian supermarket chain, ATB, was much better. “Glory to Ukraine,” he said in a video, which like others were verified by The Times. “No Pyatyorochka, ATB will be here soon.”

“From Sudzha, our news is as follows: The town is controlled by the armed forces of Ukraine,” one said, holding a rifle and standing in front of three soldiers brandishing a blue-and-yellow Ukrainian flag. “Peace in the town. All houses are intact.” He added: “I wish everyone a peaceful sky.”

One video filmed by Ukrainian forces showed Ukrainian armored vehicles gliding along roads and through open fields in the Kursk region. Another showed a convoy of a dozen or so burned Russian vehicle husks near the town of Rylsk, some 20 miles inside Russian territory. Bodies could be seen in the back of some trucks.

About three days after the incursion began, a Ukrainian strike destroyed an apparent munitions depot at Russia’s Lipetsk military airfield in the neighboring region.

Whether or not the strike was directly related to the ground advance, “Ukraine’s Kursk campaign de facto benefits,” said George Barros , an analyst with the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War.

A haphazard evacuation

For Russians near the border, the incursion arrived with loud booms. Roman, 49, a government worker who insisted on anonymity because he feared repercussions for speaking to a Western news outlet, said shelling woke him at 3:30 a.m. in his village outside Sudzha on Aug. 6, the first day of Ukraine’s incursion.

The next day, he and his wife drove to Kursk, the regional capital, because they knew their daughter’s school wouldn’t soon reopen. That night, they returned to evacuate their parents. They drove on side roads with their headlights off, stopping repeatedly to listen for drones.

Roman said people inundated him with requests for help reaching their relatives. He and others said the incursion appeared to have come as such a shock to the authorities that residents had to rely on each other.

A Sudzha resident named Ivan, 34, said in a text exchange Thursday that he was trying to evacuate residents. Later in the day, he wrote that he was in the hospital. His car had been hit by shelling while leaving Sudzha, home to around 6,000 people. And he had learned that the coffee shop where he worked had been damaged in the fighting.

“We’ve all been ditched,” Ivan said, also insisting on anonymity. “People are helping with whatever they can. The government doesn’t care.”

On Monday, the governor of Kursk said more than 100 civilians had been injured and a dozen killed, although the figures could not be independently verified.

The Times reviewed several satellite images captured since Aug. 6 that showed at least two dozen structures were damaged or destroyed in Sudzha and a neighboring village, Goncharovka, including homes, an apartment building, a gas station and support buildings of an arts school.

As the incursion expanded, the city of Kursk — whose name evokes for many Russians the enormous World War II tank battle nearby in which the Soviets stopped the German advance — filled with people fleeing the fighting. They lined up for help at aid centers set up by charity groups, Yan S. Furtsev, 38, an independent political activist in the city, said in an interview.

Nerves were frayed, he said, by shaky cellphone service and incessant air-raid warnings. Buses stopped when the sirens sounded. Those who couldn’t afford taxis were walking to work or relying on strangers for rides.

Whether the incursion would change people’s views on the war was another matter. On state television, the Kremlin played down the significance of the offensive, rather than casting it as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“There are a lot of different opinions” about the war, Mr. Furtsev said. “But as for what people think, everyone believes that this is a tragedy.”

Antimony Prices Gear up for New Records on China Export Curbs

(Reuters) - China's decision to restrict exports of antimony from Sept. 15 is likely to drive prices of the metal used in ammunition and batteries to new records, as buyers seek more material to stockpile, analysts and traders said on Thursday.

Prices of the minor metal, also used in fire-retardants, photovoltaic solar cells and military equipment, are already trading at all-time highs above $22,000 a metric ton, having roughly doubled since the start of the year due to a global deficit of the metal.

"Given we are still at record prices, it's likely that prices will go even higher with this announcement," said Chetan Soni at consultancy CRU, adding that prices could reach $30,000 as buyers would be looking to secure material for future production or stockpiling.

China is the world's largest antimony producer, accounting for 48% of global supplies at 83,000 tons last year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

It will impose export limits on antimony and related elements in the name of national security, China's commerce ministry said, its latest move to restrict shipments of critical minerals where it is the dominant supplier.

This could widen the deficit in the antimony market, which consultancy Project Blue estimated at 10,000 tons in May.

"China has already been cutting down on metal exports as they are consuming it all domestically," said Jack Bedder, co-founder of Project Blue.

European refineries of antimony trioxide have increased supply from Tajikistan, Vietnam and Myanmar to diversify from the Chinese feed, while India increased antimony ingot supplies to the United States, he said.

Another upsurge in antimony prices will reinforce the western world's reliance on China for critical minerals, which also include rare earths, gallium and germanium, exports of which are also restricted since last year.

In those cases, exports quickly flatlined after export licence requirements were introduced, before rising again, a trend which could be seen with antimony exporters now needing to apply for a licence, CRU's Soni said.

Other major producers of antimony include Myanmar, which accounted for 4,600 tons last year, Turkey for 6,000 tons and Tajikstan for 21,000 tons, according to USGS.

"The prospects of a small but antimony-rich country, Tajikistan, look good now," said Alexey Kabanov, CEO at Swiss-based trading firm Voyager Group.

The tight market conditions are partly because of disruptions in supply from Russia due to sanctions imposed after Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and Russia's lower domestic production. Russia produced 4,300 tons in 2023, data from USGS showed.

"There is no pipeline of supply to turn on," said Christopher Ecclestone, a principal and mining strategist at Hallgarten & Company in London, adding that prices could easily climb above $30,000 this year.
