African Lion Safari: Ontario’s Wildest Safari Adventure

Great news for fans of African Lion Safari – they open Saturday, May 4th for the 2024 season and have lots of WILD fun in store for you and your family! We have the inside scoop on what you can expect when you visit this summer, updates on the new African Lion Safari ticket prices plus some tips and important info for visitors.

2024 Season highlights

African Lion Safari is Canada’s Original Safari Adventure. They maintain a collection of over 1,000 exotic birds and animals comprised of over 100 different species. What animal is your favourite? Will you giggle at the silly monkeys and lemurs or be entranced watching the long-legged giraffes stroll their habitat?

Drive Through Game Reserve – One of my earliest memories of African Lion Safari was when we saw cars driving through the game reserves getting oh-so-close to the animals roaming around. It was like nothing I had ever seen before! The drive-through is 9 km long and it takes you up close through 7 large Game Reserves featuring Nairobi Sanctuary, Simba Lion Country, Timbavati Lion Country, Wankie Bushland Trail, Rocky Ridge Veldt, Australasia and The Americas. You stay in your vehicle, driving at a very slow pace, and you get to witness animals roam their territory.

Take The “Nature Boy “Train – Hop on the train for a 15-minute ride through 16 hectares of animals and birds. A trip is included in your admission.

Climb Aboard The “African Queen” – Take a boat ride to enjoy a pleasant tour around Water Safari Lake. The informative captain will take you on a cruise around the islands and point out exotic primates including the White-handed gibbon, Ring-tailed lemur, Black-handed Spider monkeys and Robust Black Spider monkeys. Bird dwellers include the Marabou stork and the Pink-backed pelican. The tour is about 15 minutes and is included in your admission.

African Lion Safari’s Waterpark Splash Pad

The splash pad, Misumu Bay Wetplay, is more than just a splash pad at African Lion Safari! As a matter of fact, this may be the highlight of your visit! I have multiple friends who buy season passes strictly for this amazing waterpark. The waterpark is included in your admission and while you’re there cool down under the dumping bucket or slip down the water slides. Enjoy sprinklers and water shooters and fountains, too!

How much is it to go to the Safari? This year, you can purchase your tickets in advance online or at the gate. Limited tickets will be available to buy at the gate, and they recommend pre-purchasing online to secure your spot. What’s more, you save a few dollars when you buy online. I can’t seem to find the tickets on the Costco Canada website – do you have the link for it? Thx.

I would not say this is a “fun” outing for children by any means. They mistreat the animals in their cage and money is always the bottom line.

A great place if you support animal abuse. Notice the bullhook the elephant trainer is holding? The animals are imprisoned there and spend up to 7 months of the year in sheds during off season. Animals are capture from the wild. Poor choice for kids to learn about animals… Unless u want to teach them about abuse.

That’s right everyone!!! Stop the madness, let’s round up all the animals and get them out of Canada. I’m Bob Barker form Price is Right, I stole Toronto’s elephants and next target is African Lion Safari. Your kids will NEVER see a wild animal ever again MUHAHAHAHAH.

Day 1 - 2024

On arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you will be met by a Lion World Travel representative and transferred to One&Only Cape Town, overlooking the marina with panoramic views of Table Mountain. Situated in the city's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the hotel offers ease of access to the beauty of the city along with top attractions.

2. TURTLES OF THE TWO OCEANS: Get up close and personal with these much-loved creatures during this behind the-scenes experience in partnership with the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation. Day 2 - 2024

Depart on a full day Cape Peninsula tour including a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, to enjoy the magnificent views of the city and coast. Drive along the exquisite stretch of coastline from Clifton to Camps Bay, towards the charming working harbor of Hout Bay and along the cliffs of Chapman's Peak Drive. After lunch, visit the Cape of Good Hope area of Table Mountain National Park. Ride the Flying Dutchman funicular to the old lighthouse for awe-inspiring views. Visit Simon's Town Boulders Beach African penguin colony before heading back to the hotel.

Day 2 - 2025

After breakfast, depart on a private full day Cape Peninsula tour. Visit the historic naval port of Simon's Town and the endearing African penguin colony at Boulders Beach. Stop for lunch at Cape Point Vineyards - a rustic mountainside restaurant with international menu, modern interior and terrace with spectacular views. Drive back along the exquisite stretch of coastline towards the charming working harbor of Hout Bay to Camps Bay and onto Table Mountain to enjoy the sunset view of Cape Town. Later you will transfer to your hotel.

Optional: BOULDERS BEACH KAYAK TOUR: An exhilarating one-of-a-kind opportunity to paddle with the penguins. This kayak tour will take you through a maze of granite boulders before emerging at Boulders Beach.

After breakfast, begin your half day Robben Island tour as you are escorted by Christo Brand, to the jetty at the Clock Tower in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront where you will board the ferry for the boat ride to Robben Island. You will be transferred back to your hotel after dinner.

In the late afternoon, you will be driven back to your hotel in Cape Town.

Day 4 - 2024

Drive with your guide in a private vehicle to the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. Enjoy a set menu lunch at Grootbos Nature Reserve, then continue with the exciting experience of land-based whale watching from De Kelders cliff. In the late afternoon, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Cape Town.

Day 4 - 2025

After breakfast, depart with a guide and private vehicle. You have two options of tours. Choose from one of the following two options:

1. EXCLUSIVE LUNCH AT WOLGAT: The restaurant has an intimate atmosphere with only 20 diners per sitting. Wolfgat is a coastal restaurant with a seafood focused menu. One can say that it is planet-friendly dining on the edge of paradise and an exceptional experience. With a heavy focus on sustainability, Kobus van der Merwe's restaurant in beautiful coastal Paternoster serves a seven-course menu built on local indigenous ingredients in dishes inspired by the surrounding landscape.

2. WHALE WATCHING AND LUNCH: Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in Gansbaai, is a leading example of sustainable eco-tourism in the Western Cape. Enjoy land-based whale watching off De Kelders cliff (it is especially spectacular during July – December). Enjoy a set menu lunch at Grootbos Nature Reserve. Dining at Grootbos is an experience in its own right, with its unique combination of fresh organic produce, a world-class natural setting and an experienced culinary team.

Day 5 - 2024

Depart with a driver-guide by Vintage Car for a full day Franschhoek Wine Experience Tour, including wine tasting, cellar tour and Sabrage demonstration at Haute Cabriere Winery. Later, enjoy an olive oil tasting at La Bourgogne Wine Farm followed by lunch, where the chef prepares the meal using farm-sourced ingredients. After lunch, enjoy leisure time in Franschhoek and an hour-long wine blending experience at Rickety Bridge Winery, from where you can leave with a bottle of wine. Later you will transfer to your hotel in Cape Town.

Day 5 - 2025

After breakfast, depart with your driver-guide in a vintage car for a full day exclusive Wine Experience Tour. First stop is at Morgenster for an olive oil and ice cream tasting. This will be followed by a Wine Safari at Vergelegen, including a game drive, private cellar tour, Flagship Wine tasting and a relaxed lunch at the Stables at Vergelegen.

Accommodation: Vergelegen Homestead – Guest Room

After breakfast, transfer by private vehicle to Cape Town Airport for your flight to Hoedspruit. On arrival at Hoedspruit Airport, you will be met and transferred to the 5-star Kapama Karula Lodge where you will spend 3-nights in a Villa including all meals and twice-daily game viewing activities. This afternoon enjoy an open vehicle game drive in Kapama Private Game Reserve – sure to be a thrilling experience!

Accommodation: Kapama Karula Lodge – Villa

Your day begins early, with a hot cup of coffee or tea. Outside, the sun is just beginning to peek over the horizon, showing off a spectacular landscape. Your experienced ranger and tracker team ensure that you have a ringside seat for any wildlife encounters in this big game reserve in the Greater Kruger Park. There is no way to know exactly what the safari experience will bring from day to day, but it will be memorable!

An early start this morning as another day of wilderness experience begins. You are accompanied by highly skilled game rangers, who provide interesting information. During your stay at Kapama, enjoy a private picnic lunch at the bird-hide. In the late afternoon after a decadent high tea, head out for the afternoon game drive through the reserve. En route you will stop for a drink as the sun sets over the distant peaks of the Drakensberg mountains. Arrive back at the lodge with time to freshen up before enjoying a fabulous dinner.

Day 9 - 2024

Transfer to Hoedspruit Airport for your flight to Johannesburg. You will be met and transferred by private vehicle to the Melrose Arch Hotel, well situated in Johannesburg's Melrose Arch area with its variety of trendy retail shops and leisure amenities.

Day 9 - 2025

After an early morning game drive to track the animals that may have eluded you so far, followed by breakfast, you will be transferred to Hoedspruit Airport. Bid farewell to the place that has given you unforgettable wildlife encounters in the African bush. On arrival at Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo Airport, you will be met by a Lion World Travel representative, who will assist you in checking in at your hotel.

Day 10 - 2024

Transfer by private vehicle to Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport for your regional flight to Victoria Falls, where you will be met and transferred to Victoria Falls River Lodge – Island Treehouse Suite. This luxury lodge is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River – so close to Victoria Falls one can see the spray in the distance! The luxury tents are built upon raised decks, with a comfortable sitting area, indoor and outdoor showers, and a private viewing deck with plunge pool where you can sit comfortably and watch the hippos wallowing. Enjoy a daily sunrise or sunset cruise, bird watching the more than 400 species and get a different view of the animals from the Tree Hide.

Day 10 - 2025

After breakfast, make your way to OR Tambo International Airport (within walking distance) to connect with your regional flight to Victoria Falls. On arrival at Victoria Falls Airport, you will be met by a Lion World Travel representative and transferred to Victoria Falls River Lodge – Island Treehouse Suite where you will spend 2-nights including all meals and daily lodge activities. Each day you will enjoy either a sunrise or a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.

Accommodation: Victoria Falls River Lodge – Island Treehouse Suite

After breakfast enjoy a guided walking tour of Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. This walking safari takes you through the magnificent rain forest where you can view the Cataracts, Livingstone's statue and a wide variety of birds and plants. Take a sunset cruse in the evening. Sit back and let the gentle ebb and flow of the Zambezi lull and relax you.

This morning enjoy your last activity at the lodge, either a river cruise or a nature drive. After breakfast you will be transferred by road to Victoria Falls Airport for your regional flight to Johannesburg. On arrival at Johannesburg's Oliver Tambo International Airport, connect with your departure flight. Return home with a lifetime of memories!

United States of America passport holders require visas for Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Visas should be obtained prior to departure either on-line or from the relevant Embassy or High Commission in Washington DC. Visas on arrival will not be issued for Kenya.

Passports for visitors to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Kenya and Tanzania must be valid for at least 6 months after the intended return date. Passports must contain at least 2 blank visa pages (each) for South Africa and Zimbabwe and 3 blank visa pages (each) for Tanzania, Kenya, and Mozambique.

Home to approximately 1000 animals, the African Lion Safari is a family owned safari park that is a must visit for wild life enthusiasts. Spanning over 740 acres, visitors can tour any or all of the seven game reserves where animals like lion, giraffe and elephants roam freely. Guests are allowed to tour the facility in their own vehicles or have the option of hopping on a tour bus that takes them through the park.

The Park was founded by retired colonel Gordon Debenham who had an intense passion for animals. The park also has a walking area where birds and animals like parrots, macaws, elephants, flamingos and rabbits can be seen.

African Lion Safari Travel Tips

• Grounds remain open for an extra 1.5 hours after game reserves and ticket booth entrance close.
• Vehicles on which openings cannot be closed or where safety is otherwise compromised (for instance, by large cracks in the windshield) will not be allowed into the reserves.
