THREE TRAVEL STYLES

Private or semi-private walks, self-guided/local-supported walks.

A dedicated and excellent English-speaking guide walks with you every step of the Great Wall. You'll become an unimaginable hero instead of merely a tourist. Guests consistently tell us we have the best guides in the world, giving them top ratings along with words of praise. To make your trip personal, joyous, and enriching, they combine their deep local knowledge and talents with their English skills.

We also offer the option of hiring our local support team for more privacy or economic reasons. We have local support staff residing at the foot of the Great Wall. Friendly and easygoing, they provide insight into natural history and culture. You can converse using a translation app or sign language.

Group or Coach Walks

Join more hikers from around the world for an impromptu hike. We offer last-minute trips every day so that you can book any tour at any time. For a low rate, you will have an unforgettable experience. There is no need to stretch your budget. No shopping is required, by the way.

The Outdoorsman

The outdoorsman: stay overnight on the great wall of china.

"When people come to the Great Wall of China, they want to explore the history and see why it was built. A day trip to the tourist sites won’t achieve that, but a sleepover on one of the world’s most storied ruins certainly will. The Great Wall Adventure Club organizes trips to sleep in a watchtower where soldiers were formerly garrisoned. When night falls, the only thing above is the stars, while the incredible land of the surrounding hills is absolutely silent ... "   CNN Travel , 11 June, 2012

Great Wall of China

Jinshanling'1280x360'small

  • Sights & Activities

As China's most famous attraction, the Great Wall of China is an essential stop on all China tours . Commonly considered a wonder of the world, the Great Wall boasts a history of over 2,000 years and stretches more than 3,000 miles across several provinces of northern China, making it one of the most impressive ancient structures on the planet.

Virtual Tour of the Great Wall of China

Want to visit the great wall of china spontaneously with a professional live guide learn more about our guided virtual tour here, best sections to visit.

Beijing is usually considered the main gateway to the Great Wall, since there are several world-famous sections of the Wall in the suburbs of Beijing, including Badaling, Mutianyu, Jinshanling, Juyongguan, Gubeikou, and Jiankou. These sections were built during the Ming dynasty between the 14th and 17th centuries and have been well preserved.

Of all the sections of the Great Wall near Beijing, Badaling is the most famous one. As a result, Badaling is the destination of choice for many large tour groups and is often very crowded. The nearby Juyongguan Great Wall features one of the three great mountain passes of the Great Wall but is almost as crowded as Badaling.

Mutianyu Great Wall is just as close as Badaling and offers wonderful views of the Great Wall and the surrounding hills with far fewer tourists. This section of the Wall also features a thrilling toboggan run that you can ride from the top of the Wall down to the bottom of the hill.

Due to their proximity, Badaling, Juyongguan, and Mutianyu are all doable as a half-day trip from downtown Beijing. We usually recommend Mutianyu over Badaling or Juyongguan , since the massive crowds at the latter two sections can ruin one's experience of this impressive structure.

Further away from Beijing, Jinshanling Great Wall is about 150 km northeast of downtown and it usually takes about two and a half hours to drive there. Despite the longer drive, Jinshanling is among the most stunning sections of the Great Wall. If your itinerary allows for one full day seeing the Great Wall, then we highly recommend a tour to Jinshanling.

Gubeikou and Jiankou can also be visited within a day tour from Beijing . Both sections have not been restored since they were first built in the Ming Dynasty, making them ideal choices for those who want to hike and experience the wild Great Wall. Do be aware that the Jiankou section features very steep and dangerous climbs and is only suitable for experienced hikers.

There are also some other famous sections of the Great Wall within or outside Beijing, such as Huanghuacheng, Simatai, and Shanhaiguan, but we only recommend these if you are visiting the Great Wall for a second time or planning a multi-day, in-depth Great Wall tour.

Great Wall Hiking and Camping

Due to its original purpose as a military defense, almost all sections of Great Wall were built on mountain ranges and thus involve some challenging climbs and uneven stairs, including the well-restored sections. If you are visiting a restored section but hike to the end of the renovated part, you will be able to see the unrestored part of the Great Wall.

For most visitors, Mutianyu and Jinshanling offer good, medium difficulty hikes, while still being very safe. For those looking for a serious hike along wild, unrestored portions of the Wall, we suggest the Jinshanling to Jinshanling East , or Gubeikou to Jinshanling routes. All these routes boast both unrestored and picturesque renovated sections of the Wall. However, please be aware that hikes along wild, unrestored parts of the Great Wall involve many steep climbs and loose bricks, and can be very dangerous in some places. (People can no longer hike through from Jinshanling to Simatai since the route was closed years ago.)

Camping on the Great Wall is usually banned, especially on the renovated sections. If you want to spend a night sleeping on the Great Wall , we can take you to a watchtower on the Gubeikou section of the Great Wall to experience the life of an ancient soldier and catch amazing sunrise/sunset views over the Wall.

Best Time to Visit

For all sections of the Great Wall near Beijing, the spring months (April to June) offer temperate weather and are great for climbing. In late April to early May, many trees begin to blossom, making this a particularly beautiful period to visit the Wall. Fall is also a nice time to visit, as temperatures are usually comfortable. October to early November are particularly picturesque, as the tree leaves on the mountains begin to change color. The winter months, from December to February, are cold and can be windy, but there are usually far fewer tourists on the Wall during these months. July and August are hot and humid, and thus not the best for long hikes. In addition, it's best to avoid hiking on the Wall after rain or snowfall because some parts can get very slippery.

You should also avoid visiting the popular sections, such as Badaling, Juyongguan, and Mutianyu, around National Day (the first week in October) and Spring Festival. August is also a busy time for the Badaling and Juyongguan sections, since students are on summer vacation and many families travel to these famous sections with their kids before the new school year starts. Learn more about how to avoid the crowds when traveling in China .

Great Wall at Mutianyu Hiking Map

Detailed itinerary.

Meet your guide at your hotel. He/She will be waiting in the hotel lobby, holding a placard with your name on it. Then drive to the Great Wall section at Mutianyu which will take about 1½ hours and we'll have a rest and have a simple set meal for lunch before going up to the wall. You also can choose to have a picnic on the wall if the weather is really good. Feel free to tell the tour guide and he/she will be glad to arrange that for you. Lunch fee is not included in the pricing.

Good to Know:

  • The day before your tour date, we will send you details of the tour guide and pick up time by email.
  • It is necessary to wear comfortable hiking shoes for the hiking.
  • Be prepared for a hiking day and have a simple lunch before leaving.
  • Do not forget you are going to the mountains where the weather can rapidly change, and that there are no shops on this part of the Wall.
  • We are also available to provide the private airport transfer service for this trip, price from 25 USD p/p.  Click here to book the additional transfer.
  • We can drive our own vehicle to the foot of the Great Wall while others have to wait for the public transfer bus to the foot of the Great Wall. During peak seasons, people who transfer with public bus may spend 1 hour in waiting in a long queue.

Upon arrival, collect some cool drinking water at the China Highlights Refreshment Kiosk at the foot of the Great Wall.

You have two options for travelling up and down the Wall: round-way cable car (or toboggan). You can decide which option you prefer when you arrive. If you choose cable car, it will take seven minutes to reach the top of the Wall, instead of going up by foot might take you 45 minutes climbing steps. Cable car and toboggan fee is not included in the pricing.

Cable car ascends to and descends from the 14th watchtower. From there, walk east to the 23rd watchtower on the most beautiful part of the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. And chairlift ascends to the 6th watchtower. It would be a high challenge hiking from the 6th to the 23rd watchtower. According to your physical condition, most of our customers who take the chairlift up and down, hike from tower 6 to tower 14 and turn back to tower 6. Take a toboggan down the mountain which is fun.

  • We avoid (the worst of the) crowds on the Great Wall and traffic jams by visiting in the afternoon.

Arrive at the foot of the Great Wall and back to our vehicle. You will be transferred back to your hotel at approximately 6pm.

You may follow us on our Facebook page to see the latest updates, photos and posts from your tour guide at:  https://www.facebook.com/trippest/

  • If you plan to leave Beijing after your day tour, please check out from your hotel before departure. Normally it will take 10 to 20 minutes for hotel staff to complete the procedure. You may leave your luggage in our vehicle, and you will be transferred to the airport or train station straight after the tour to make best use of your time. You will need 1 hour to be transferred from the city center to airport, and you will need to be at the airport 1.5 hours before a domestic flight, or 2.5 hours before you're an international flight. Tell us about your departure time when booking, and remind our guide, and we will make arrangements accordingly.  We provide private airport / train station to transfer  (price from 25 USD p/p)

Great Wall Hiking

Great Wall of China Hiking 2024

Great Wall of China is one of the most known destinations in the world which has many brilliant reputations - one of the Eight Wonders of the World, visible from moon and Earth orbit, the longest wall in the world, the greatest military project of ancient China, one of World Heritage Sites... Visiting this brilliant walls is once in a lifetime trip, while hiking is the best way to explore this iconic Chinese structural masterpiece.

The State Bureau of Cultural Relics announced in 2012 that the Great Wall of China has a total length of 21196.18 km, covering more than 15 provincial regions. But only 6259 km are actual walls. The condition ranges from excellent to ruined. Geographically the Great Wall stretches on thousands of mountains and hills with different heights. As a result, the hiking ease varies from easy to very difficult. China Discovery takes you to hike the best sections which keep the original features, and are available for hiking, such as the Mutianyu Great Wall , Simatai Great Wall , Jinshanling Great Wall , etc. The hiking experience can be customized according to your dates, budget and physical condition.

Jiankou Great Wall is Not Open for Tourists :

The Beijing Great Wall Protection and Management Regulations clearly state that it is prohibited to organize tours or climb sections of the Great Wall that have not been approved for visitation. Violators may be subject to corresponding fines. The Jiankou Great Wall is an unopened section of the Great Wall, and climbing it can cause damage to the structure. This not only hinders the preservation of the Great Wall but also poses significant risks to the safety of visitors. Therefore, we urge everyone not to climb the Jiankou Great Wall. Tourists can visit and hike at well-developed sections of the Great Wall such as Mutianyu, Badaling, and Jinshanling instead.

1. Mutianyu to Jiankou Day Hike (Closed)

The hike from Jiankou Section of Great Wall to Mutianyu Section of Great Wall is a hard but very popular. It starts from Xizhazi Village at the foot of Jiankou, going up-and-down with Jiankou Great Wall along the ridges of the steep and narrow mountains, and reach Mutianyu, the stored section of Great Wall with enjoyable stairs. You will enjoy interesting contrasts between wild sections of Great Wall and restored Great Wall. This hike is only recommended for experienced hikers travelling with a group or with an experience Great Wall hiking guide.

2. Jinshanling Great Wall to Simatai Great Wall Hiking 2 Days Hike

This route is the best for those who want to see some original features of the ancient great wall. Jinshanling and Simatai are two great sections of great wall which have kept some original things. And the challenging paths there seem to be the most attractive reason. You need two days to finish this route. You will drive nearly 3 hours to get to Jinshanling firstly, then start your hiking in Jinshanling from Zhuanduo Tower on the west to the East Tower with Five Holes. This hiking takes about 4 hours. Then get back to your hotel close to the tourist center. On the second day, go to hike the Simatai Great Wall. Since Simatai Great Wall is divided by the Yuanyang Lake into two parts. If you want to hike both sides, you have to hike about 5 hours.

3. Gubeikou to Jinshanling Day Hike

This hike is strongly recommended for those who want to camp on the Great Wall after hiking. You will hike from Gubeikou Section of Great Wall to Jinshanling at a leisure pace. Gubeikou's walls and towers are wild and unrestored, and not hard to walk. If you like, you can camp for overnight in watchtowers of Gubeikou Section of Great Wall. It usually takes about 1.5 hours to get from Gubeikou to Jinshanling Section of Great Wall which is believed as the best essence of all sections of Great Wall, also the paradise for great wall hiking lovers. It is one of the best preserved sections of Great Wall with steep mountains, ornate and dense towers. The best highlight of this hike is to enjoy the lakeside Great Wall. Its first half is to hike the restored section (about 1.5 hours), and the second half is to hike the wild unrestored section (2.5 hours). Not a long trek, but it is tough because you have to hike the trails on the wall up and down along the rising and descending of the mountains. You will finish the hike at Xishuiyu Village which is close to the lake at the foot of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall.

6. Mutianyu + Jinshanling Great Wall Hiking 2 Days Hike

Mutianyu Section and Jinshanling Section of Great Wall are not connected. It takes two days to hike both. You will need 3 hours to hike Mutianyu, then get down the foot of Mutianyu to drive about 2 hours to find a hotel or camp near Jinshanling Great Wall to stay a night. Great Wall 2 on 62nd Avenue in St Pete has been our go-to Chinese delivery for 20 years maybe? Josh is my main delivery guy. He's been there for a long time, he's a sweetheart. I've never had a bad meal from there. Usually it's too hot to eat right away when you get it. And I have tried egg foo young and many other meals from other delivery places but this is my delivery place I go back to because I'm absolutely never disappointed.

Photo of Mike H.

The food wasn't very good, it wasn't prepared well, food was more like a reheated commercial frozen product. Service was outstanding and fast, which made it all the more disappointing when we tried to eat the food.

Photo of Krystle B.

I give one star only because zero isn't an option. Ordered from Uber eats because they had 4.5 stars but didn't check here first. those reviews must be fake or people aren't voicing complaints.... The food tasted like something out of the freezer section of save-a-lot. It was inedible. The Rangoon had maybe a teaspoon of filling. The beef and broccoli was very chewy as of the beef was steamed with the broccoli. Absolutely no flavor what so ever. For the price, I thought I would have gotten a decent sized cheap Chinese portion. Wrong again. It was beyond over priced for what was received. The lo-mein was so soggy it was inedible. The soy sauce packets didn't even taste like soy sauce. NEVER order from here. See attached photos of gross food in the trash. I'm just hoping ubereats gives me all my money back since it was so terrible.

Each item was consistently bad. Ordered bbq beef that looked and tasted like it had been out and reheated several times. Soup all tasted off. First time ordering from here and last.

Photo of Ivan K.

What an atrocious tasting food place. We ordered two orders of sesame chicken with pork fried rice. The chicken was like eating cardboard mixed with plastic fibers. Don't think these people know what proper chicken looks like. And the rice had zero flavors. It was like a mind****, you see you are eating rice and pieces of pork, but no taste at all. Like rice was 5 weeks old. Absolutely worst waste of $30...ever.

Photo of Drew H.

Better then most fast food chinese joints, got the Hot-n-Sour soup and it was alright, and I got the triple delight lunch special and it was suprisingly good ;-)

Photo of Ana G.

This is my second time ordering from them and I get an incorrect order again. The second time i ordered from them I called them to tell them they got our order wrong yet again and I had to wait for over an hour to get my correct order delivered. My order is simple shrimp fried rice! It even says it on the receipt but they keep giving me shrimp and pork. I wouldn't recommend them! And the customer service is horrible when we call them to see where the driver is with our correct order of food 1 hour after our initial complaint. The male owner is very rude. There are better restaurants out there don't bother with this one.

Photo of Carolyn S.

Good takeout Chinese food. Fast service and tasty. Very clean, nice selection and large selection of foods on menu. Staff is very nice.

Photo of Holden C.

Why the bad reviews? Everything was tasty. Portions small and it's expensive. The House Low Mein had lots of tasty chunks of meat and shrimp. Try it!

Photo of Lou L.

Was craving some quick Chinese. We ordered through Uber eats, so wasn't sure what I was getting into since the reviews were not the greatest. And there wasn't a whole lot of photos to see. We ordered general tso's chicken which was okay. The noodles, egg foo young, egg rolls and steamed dumplings were good. Good sized portions. Everything was neatly packed, and all sauces were there.
