Tra i due parchi si trova il Columbia Icefield , un insieme di sei ghiacciai che creano uno scenario mozzafiato: per ammirarlo al meglio si deve salire sul Glacier Skywalk , un ponte dal pavimento trasparente sospeso a 280 metri di altezza. 

Le Cascate del Niagara sono una delle attrazioni più celebri del Canada: il lato canadese delle cascate, che si trovano al confine con gli Stati Uniti, offre una visuale migliore rispetto a quello americano, con un’area più vasta dove ammirarle. Le possibilità per visitarle al meglio sono moltissime: dal giro in barca per avvicinarsi il più possibile al salto d’acqua all’escursione in un tunnel dietro la cascata, dalla passerella sospesa alla funivia sulle pareti rocciose. Qualunque sia la scelta, si tratta di uno spettacolo da non perdere durante un tour in Canada .

Le maree più alte del mondo si ammirano nella Baia di Fundy : le imponenti rocce sono state modellate dall’acqua, dando vita ad un panorama spettacolare. Il fenomeno si apprezza al meglio ad Hopewell Rocks , un sistema di rocce dalla conformazione particolare chiamate anche “vasi da fiori”.

Per chi durante un viaggio in Canada desidera un luogo davvero isolato e selvaggio, dove dedicarsi ad attività avventurose nella natura incontaminata, la destinazione da non perdere è lo Yukon , la mitica terra della corsa all’oro. Qui si ha la sensazione di essere davvero fuori dal mondo: in inverno si ammirano le aurore boreali, si pesca nel ghiaccio e si percorrono sentieri innevati con le slitte trainati dai cani. 

La regione di Manitoba è la zona dove durante un viaggio in Canada si possono avvistare gli orsi polari: è facile avvistarli in questa regione, tra le città di Churchill e Winnipeg , nei pressi della Hudson Bay . Gli orsi si possono avvistare in questa zona tra ottobre e novembre, quando attendono che la baia si congeli per poi muoversi sulla banchisa. Le escursioni per vederli da vicino si effettuano a bordo dei Tundra buggy, veicoli appositamente realizzati per questo tipo di attività.

Un viaggio in Canada è anche un tour alla scoperta delle sue città più affascinanti. Toronto è una metropoli cosmopolita dall’atmosfera europea: la CN Tower rende il suo skyline immediatamente riconoscibile e salire sulla sua sommità è d’obbligo per ammirare il panorama mozzafiato che si estende fino alla baia di Hudson. Il quartiere più caratteristico è il Distillery District, una meravigliosa area di archeologia industriale nel cuore della città vecchia in stile vittoriano, ma meritano una visita anche Chinatown con la sua atmosfera frenetica e il moderno Harbourfront, affacciato sul lago Ontario, di fronte alle Toronto Islands. Toronto ha una vivace scena culturale: gallerie, mostre e musei sono innumerevoli e spicca in modo particolare il Royal Ontario Museum, dedicato alle scienze naturali, con un’architettura davvero unica. Tra le cose da vedere a Toronto due sono assolutamente particolari: il Path, una sorta di città sotterranea che si estende per 30 km molto frequentata durante i rigidi mesi invernali, e il Vog Vault, una ex cassaforte di una banca trasformata in un particolare salotto dove sembra non esserci la forza di gravità. 

Tra le città del Canada da visitare spiccano le due più grandi città del Canada Francese, Montréal e Québec City . Montréal è una città ricca di parchi che si esprimono in tutta la loro bellezza soprattutto in autunno: in inverno invece l’attrazione principale è il Réso, la città sotterranea, tra negozi, ristoranti, locali e musei. Nella città vecchia si concentrano gli edifici storici, tra cui la Basilica di Notre Dame, dal sapore squisitamente europeo. Passeggiando per Québec City si ha l’impressione di essere in Francia, con le vie ciottolate e il centro fortificato: il simbolo della città è il suggestivo Chateau Fontenac, un hotel ispirato nell’architettura ai castelli europei dove soggiornare per un viaggio in Canada dal sapore esclusivo.  

Vancouver è assolutamente una delle città da visitare in Canada : affacciata sul Pacifico, circondata dalle montagne, ha come edificio simbolo il maestoso Canada Palace con le sue vele bianche. Il cuore della città è un affascinante insieme di grattacieli, visibili anche dal meraviglioso Stanley Park, l’esteso parco cittadino che ospita numerosi laghi e un grande acquario. Poco lontano, la città di Victoria incanta con le sue atmosfere stile Vecchia Inghilterra, con edifici storici e sale da tè dal fascino sofisticato. 

Calgary , ai piedi delle Montagne Rocciose, è spesso il punto di partenza per esplorare la zona dei parchi nazionali: durante il festival di Calgary Stampede, nel mese di luglio, la città si affolla di appassionati di rodeo.

Itinerario di viaggio in Canada

Nel nostro itinerario di viaggio in Canada abbiamo visto gli orsi e le balene ; il mare e i ghiacciai ; città culturalmente europee e città modernamente americane .

La varietà di paesaggi che questo paese è in grado di offrire è impressionante e, visto che questa volta il tempo non ci manca (è il nostro viaggio di nozze!), possiamo pensare a un tour in Canada che preveda parecchie tappe, senza l’ansia di dover correre troppo per toccarle tutte. Visiteremo sia la parte est che la parte ovest , saltando quella centrale con un comodo volo interno.

Se, invece, avete a disposizione non più di 2 settimane, vi consiglio di scegliere una delle 2 zone , a seconda dei vostri interessi e di dedicarvi esclusivamente a quella, evitando di correre come pazzi per visitare (male) più luoghi possibile. Tenete presente che, ovunque, ci sono tante cose da vedere o da fare e non avrete difficoltà a riempire sempre le vostre giornate.

L’assicurazione di viaggio

Ormai lo sapete: sono una grande fan delle assicurazioni di viaggio, perchè voglio godermi la vacanza in totale tranquillità . Vale per l’assicurazione dell’ auto a noleggio (aggiungo sempre la “Protezione Completa” di Rentalcars , per coprire tutti i possibili danni e senza franchigia) e vale soprattutto per l’ annullamento volo e le spese mediche .

Per i viaggi in paesi extra_UE ritengo quest’ultima INDISPENSABILE, a maggior ragione per le destinazioni del Nord-America , dove una semplice visita al Pronto Soccorso potrebbe costare migliaia di euro.

Ho provato Heymondo e sono rimasta davvero contenta: il sito è di facile comprensione, l’ app è comodissima in caso sia necessario contattare l’assistenza durante il viaggio (a qualsiasi ora e da qualsiasi parte del mondo) e, soprattutto, offre il prodotto col miglior rapporto qualità/prezzo . Ecco qui di seguito le tappe del nostro itinerario di viaggio in Canada fai-da-te, con partenza da Toronto e rientro da Vancouver (con breve passaggio a Seattle, negli Stati Uniti).

Abbiamo giudicato da subito il tour in Canada “un viaggio facile”. Il paese è ottimamente organizzato dal punto di vista turistico, ha tante strutture ricettive ed è molto sicuro (la criminalità è praticamente pari a zero). Inoltre, parliamo un discreto ingese (mio marito anche il francese), quindi non avremo problemi di comunicazione. Con l’aiuto dell’immancabile Lonely Planet , ci sono tutte le condizioni per organizzare un itinerario di viaggio in Canada come piace a noi: prenoteremo solo i voli, l’auto e l’hotel a Toronto per le prime 2 notti . Tutto il resto lo definiremo “in corso d’opera” sulla base di quello che vedremo e che, quindi, ci andrà di fare giorno per giorno.

Partiremo da Toronto e, dopo una visita alle Cascate del Niagara , ci sposteremo nel Quebec per visitare le sue bellissime città. Faremo anche una tappa al villaggio di Tadoussac, per vedere le balene .

Raggiunta poi Calgary con il volo da Quebec City, rimarremo qualche giorno sulle Rocky Mountains , quindi ci dirigeremo verso Prince Rupert , ai confini con l’Alaska. Da lì, con una nave, percorreremo l’Inside Passage (con panorami incredibili) e raggiungeremo l’ isola di Vancouver , dove rimarremo in mezzo alla natura per un paio di giorni.

A conclusione del nostro itinerario di viaggio in Canada, raggiungeremo poi Seattle (negli Stati Uniti) e, infine, Vancouver , dove trascorreremo gli ultimi giorni.

A differenza degli altri viaggi fatti fin’ora, il nostro itinerario di viaggio in Canada prevede arrivo e partenza da città diverse . Questo complica un po’ le cose e, soprattutto, alza considerevolmente il costo del volo. C’è poi da prenotare anche la tratta interna.

L’auto a noleggio

L’auto sarà il mezzo di trasporto per tutto il nostro tour in Canada e percorreremo tantissimi chilometri. Vorremmo, quindi, un’auto comoda e con un bagagliaio che possa contenere tutte le nostre valigie, in modo che non rimangano “a vista” durante gli spostamenti e le soste (Col senno di poi, questa precauzione si rivelerà inutile…). I noleggi saranno 2 , uno per parte Est (da Toronto a Quebec City,  6 giorni) e un altro per la parte Ovest (da Calgary a Vancouver, 12 giorni), intervallati dallo spostamento col volo interno. Purtroppo, la riconsegna in un punto diverso da quello del ritiro prevede un extra (abbastanza elevato) da aggiungere al costo effettivo del noleggio.

Indispensabile inserire le opzioni chilometraggio illimitato e doppio conducente. L’ottimo Rentalcars.com ci propone ottime tariffe con la Alamo.

I pernottamenti in Canada

Il Canada è caro , senza ombra di dubbio. Il prezzo per il pernottamento in un hotel di medio/alto livello in città come Vancouver o Quebec City è intorno ai 140€/notte, e la colazione non è quasi mai compresa.

Per fortuna, soprattutto nella parte ovest, ci sono tantissimi B&B o Guest House che offrono pernottamento e colazione in case meravigliose, per prezzi più che ragionevoli. E la cosa più bella è che puoi interagire con la gente del posto e respirare un po’ l’atmosfera delle loro case. Senza contare la splendida accoglienza che ci è sempre stata riservata. Sì, il B&B in Canada sarà la nostra prima opzione , quando possibile e li prenoteremo bussando direttamente alla loro porta, o chiamandoli il giorno prima, quando definiremo gli spostamenti del giorno successivo.

Gli hotel di Quebec City, Banff, Seattle e Vancouver, li prenoteremo anch’essi qualche giorno prima del nostro arrivo, ma on-line, su Booking.com .

Ciao Barbara! Grazie, ci ho “lavorato” parecchio, ma ne è valsa la pena: è stato un viaggio bellissimo! Dunque, 2.300€ è stata la spesa complessiva per tutti i voli per entrambi (me e mio marito): andata su Toronto, volo interno e ritorno da Vancouver. Non è una tariffa particolarmente conveniente, ma il fatto di non ritornare dalla stessa città dell’andata ha alzato il prezzo. Per quanto riguarda il costo delle auto a noleggio posso cercare le prenotazioni, ma non so quanto ti possa essere utile visto che io sono andata qualche anno fa… Credo sia molto meglio per te andare sul sito rentalcars.com e fare un preventivo in 1 minuto, in modo da avere dati aggiornati. Sono veramente bravi e se avessi qualche domanda contattali pure, perchè sono efficientissimi! Per quanto riguarda i pernottamenti, noi abbiamo sempre cercato (e trovato) B&B che con 50$ ti davano camera (quasi sempre con bagno) e colazione. Ed erano molto carini (se hai bisogno di qualche nome chiedimi pure). Nelle città, invece, ci siamo concessi degli hotel di fascia medio-alta, al prezzo di 140/150€ a notte (anche qui se ti serve qualche nome dimmi). Ma on-line trovi di sicuro anche hotel più economici (e ugualmente validi). Quindi, fai tu il conto in base alle notti che prevedi di passare lì. Quando pensi di partire? Ciao, Francesca.

Ciao! Sto organizzando un itinerario nel Canada occidentale per Settembre. Mi veniva più comodo volare su Vancouver all’andata e al ritorno da Calgary ma come scrivi tu il prezzo si alza. Mi sembra assurdo perché si tratta di cifre astronomiche..ti chiedevo come avevi risolto tu x spendere meno. Grazie

Ciao! Io avevo volato su Toronto e rientro da Vancouver: credo che da Calgary i prezzi siano più alti. Lo so, sono cifre astronomiche che non si riescono a giustificare! Vedi se magari da Calgary trovi un volo economico per Vancouver e fai un a/r intercontinentale su Vancouver. Di solito i voli interni costano pochissimo. Perdi un po’ di tempo per tornare a Vancouver (qualche ora prima del volo di rientro), ma forse risparmi parecchio. Io in altri paesi ho fatto spesso così. Fammi sapere!

Grazie mille! Dal 18 Settembre per circa per 20 giorni. Atterro a Montreal e la mia idea è di fare Montreal – Ottawa e poi in auto arrivare fino a Quebec City e Tadoussac. Poi vorrei tornare a Montreal e prendere un volo per Toronto, visitare la città e la cascate del Niagara. Da li volo Toronto- Calgary e con l’auto visitare la zona di Banff – Jasper National Park ed i laghi, ritornare a Calgary e con volo arrivare a Vancouver. Da li visitare Vancouver e Victoria, anche se quest’ultima è abbastanza scomoda per arrivarci. Cosa ne pensi? 🙂

In un ordine diverso, è quello che abbiamo fatto noi. Nella parte ovest, noi eravamo arrivati fino a Prince Rupert, ai confini con l’Alaska, e avevamo visto gli orsi Grizzly (puoi vedere l’articolo sul blog). Se hai tempo (e voglia di guidare tanto) secondo me merita. Da lì, giù in nave fino a Vancouver Island nell’Inside passage: davvero spettacolare!!! (puoi vedere l’articolo sul blog) Dal Quebec a Toronto, forse non serve un volo. Anche perchè tieni presente che devi lasciare un’auto e poi riprenderne un’altra solo per andare a Niagara: tutto tempo “perso”, oltre a quello negli areoporti, e altre prenotazioni in più da fare. Quindi valuta bene i km da fare e il tempo che hai a disposizione. In genere 1 volo interno è sufficiente (per scavalcare il centro del paese): Toronto-Calgary è perfetto! Victoria è carina, ma più che la città, merita l’isola di Vancouver, per la sua natura strepitosa (abbiamo visto un sacco di orsi, semplicemente andando in giro in auto). Se riesci ad includerla nel tuo itinerario, ti suggerisco un B&B a Port Alberni: uno chalet con piscina (e vasca idromassaggio) strepitoso. In mezzo alla natura, sulla riva di un fiume; e al mattino c’erano i cervi nel giardino! Fammi sapere se hai bisogno di altri consigli! Francesca

Ottimi consigli! Descritto così, quello chalet sembra meraviglioso 🙂 Tra l’altro guardando qua e là, ho visto anche Yellowknife per provare ad andare a vedere l’aurora boreale partendo da Edmonton. E’ un viaggio davvero tosto da organizzare! 🙂 Per quanto riguarda le normative covid, dal 7 Settembre si può andare con Green Pass e senza quarantena all’arrivo. Per il ritorno in Italia poi dovrò fare un tampone.

Ci sono cose particolari da sapere su le varie strade, pedaggi etc? ed altra cosa…da Toronto alle Cascate del Niagara è obbligatoria l’auto oppure partono dei tour di 1 giorno?

Grazie ancora! Le strade in Canada sono belle e sicure (come il paese in generale). Pensa che NON esistono i dischio orari, perchè vanna a “fiducia”! Sì, una volta avevamo parcheggiato in un parcheggio “1 ora” e nell’auto non trovavamo il disco. Allora sono andata in un negozio a chiedere come fare: la signora, con aria stupita perchè non capiva cosa fosse un disco orario, mi ha detto: “…quando è passata un’ora sposti l’auto!”. A memoria non ricordo di strade a pedaggio (perfino un ferry per Tadoussac da Baie-Sainte-Catherine è gratuito). Per il tour alle cascate del Niagara da Toronto, mi cogli impreparata 🙂 Ma sicuramente ce ne sono! Cerca prima se hai tempo, oppure fai direttamente là. Fammi sapere e buon viaggio!

Ciao, volevo chiederti, anche se a distanza di qualche anno, come avete raggiunto Tadoussac da Montreal. Credo in macchina ma intendo se avete fatto tappe intermedie poichè la distanza è tanta. Grazie.

Ciao, scusa per il ritardo,ma sono stata fuori per lavoro la scorsa settimana. No, da Montreal a Tadoussac non abbiamo fatto tappe intermedie. E’ stato un bel viaggio, vero, ma sono paesaggi talmente belli che il tempo passa veloce! Siamo arrivati al Ferry che era quasi sera e sull’isola che ormai era buio, ma abbiamo trovato un B&B anche senza prenotarlo: basta chiedere e ti daranno una mano, perchè lì si conoscono praticamente tutti. Al mattino presto,l’escursione in mare: indescrivibile! Spero di esserti stata d’aiuto e fammi sapere se haibisogno di altre info. Ciao! Francesca

Giorno 3 MONTRÉAL/ LAC DELAGE

Prima colazione in hotel, e partenza per Lac Delage nella provincia del Quebec . Lungo il percorso sosta per il pranzo tipico presso una tipica  “ cabane a sucre ”. Pomeriggio a disposizione a Lac Delage per le numerose attività all’aria aperta: canoa, kayak, percorsi a piedi, jacuzzi. Sistemazione in hotel. Cena e pernottamento .

Giorno 4 LAC DELAGE/ SAGUENAY

Prima colazione in hotel. Intera giornata dedicata all’esplorazione delle Laurentides : accompagnati da guide naturalistiche, si partirà in bus per un’area remota di questo immenso parco ricco di colline, torrenti, boschi e laghi. Imbarco a bordo di una tipica canoa “ Rabaska ” per un’escursione nella foresta boreale. Pranzo pic-nic sulle rive del lago e  uscita per l’avvistamento degli orsi neri nel loro habitat naturale: un’emozione unica! Cena libera. Pernottamento.

Tour panoramico in pullman di Québec City , unica città fortificata di tutta l’America del Nord, la Città Vecchia è un patrimonio mondiale dell’Unesco un museo vivente: Città Alta e Città Bassa, l’impressionante Castello-Hotel “Château Frontenac “, la Terrazza Dufferin e il Battlefield Park, il tutto avvolto da un’atmosfera mittel -europea molto raffinata e particolare. Pranzo libero. Partenza per Ottawa . All’arrivo, tour panoramico in pullman per scoprire le bellezze della capitale del Canada: la Parliament Hill, il Byward Market, City Hall e il Canale Rideau, la Corte Suprema del Canada . Il tour organizzato in Canada inizierà a Montreal, la vivace metropoli in cui modernità e tradizione convivono armoniosamente. Dopo aver esplorato i suoi quartieri più iconici, ti dirigerai verso le Laurentides, una regione ricca di colline, torrenti, boschi e laghi cristallini. Qui, accompagnato da guide naturalistiche, vivrai un’esperienza unica: pagaierai a bordo di una tipica canoa “Rabaska” e avvisterai gli orsi neri nel loro habitat naturale , un’emozione indimenticabile.

Il tuo viaggio in Canada proseguirà verso Tadoussac, dove potrai ammirare il bellissimo fiordo e pranzare in uno storico hotel. Prima colazione americana. Partenza, la mattina presto, lungo il fiordo di Saguenay fino a Tadoussac , situata sulle rive del maestoso fiume San Lorenzo. Che siate osservatori della fauna selvatica, escursionisti o semplici amanti della natura, qui a Tadoussac troverete sicuramente qualcosa di bello da vedere o fare! Tempo libero per fare una breve escursione lungo il sentiero Pointe del’Islet e godersi l’incredibile vista sul fiume St. Lawrence ed il fiordo di Saguenay o per imbarcarsi in una crociera di osservazione delle balene (a pagamento) o semplicemente passeggiare in questo incantevole villaggio. Pranzo  incluso nel programma in questo bel villaggio.

Subito dopo, proseguimento verso Quebec City . Lungo il percorso attreverseremo la bellissima regione di Charlevoix: riconosciuta dall’UNESCO come Riserva mondiale della biosfera, questa regione di dolci colline e viste panoramiche non ha eguali in Canada. What people love about Canada Tours

Great tour with amazing sights and wildlife; however, be aware of a lot of driving the first two days on the way to banff and on the last two days back to Vancouver. Furthermore the itinerary should be updated as there where some changes as to the description.

The Canadian Rockies tour of 5 national parks was amazing! I cannot even describe how beautiful this country really is. My favorite places include: Bow Lake, Columbia Icefield, Jasper, Maligne Lake, Peyto Lake, Lake Louise with an excellent Lunch, Moraine Lake, Yoho, Johnston Canyon, Banff Town and Aspen Hotel (the best), and Waterton Prince Wales Hotel. Some suggestions would be to always provide heathy breakfast, air conditioning in hotel. Calgary Tours guides were not always respectful to all tourists and the tour group was very large at times 50 people! Jesse was our best guide since he was friendly to all, informative, and had a great personality. A great asset to this tour company.

In order to help you plan your stay , I have prepared this recommended Itinerary for a week in Canada . You will discover some of the best places to visit in the country!

Get ready for cities like Montreal , Toronto , Ottawa , and famous tourist attractions such as the Thousand Islands and the iconic Niagara Falls .

For this itinerary, in addition to the best things to do and must-see attractions , I will also give you all my best tips as well as my list of the best accommodations depending on your budget.

So, what are the best things to do in Canada in a week? Where to stay?

Where to stay in Montreal

To visit eastern Canada in a week , you’ll start in Montreal , the perfect place to kick off your road trip.

Depending on when your flight lands and how tired you are, you can either:

• Pick up your rental car and head straight to bed to be well-rested for the start of your adventure the next day
• Or drop your bags at the hotel and start exploring Montreal !

For car rental, you should use Booking.com Cars for three reasons:

Then, continue with a stroll along the Old Port by the St. Lawrence River. It’s a fantastic place for a walk!

For the end of the day, head over to Mount Royal Lookout located in the park of the same name. You’ll have a breathtaking view of all of Montreal !

And for dinner, immerse yourself in Canadian culture by tasting the typical dish: poutine !

Make your way to La Banquise , a restaurant completely devoted to this beloved national dish, offering an extensive and delectable selection. 2) The Thousand Islands (1 day)

The next day, things start getting serious on this one-week journey through Canada. Head to the Thousand Islands , located halfway between Montreal and Toronto! It’s the perfect pit stop to break up the drive and also enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes of Canada .

To get to the Thousand Islands from Montreal, it’s about a 3-hour drive.

The must-do tourist activity at the Thousand Islands is to take a boat cruise (around the Thousand Islands, of course!). Cruises depart from the towns of Rockport, Gananoque, or Kingston .

Cruises are available from May to October .

In any case, the boats can carry around 50 people. If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, you can also book a private boat just for you. Yep, as expected, it’s a bit more expensive. But trust me, the experience is totally worth it!

During the cruise, you’ll navigate among some of the 1,865 islands ! All of them are different: varying in size, inhabited or not; cabins, luxury houses, and even a castle have been built on them.

The castle located on Boldt Island has a unique story. Billionaire George Boldt had it built for his wife, but she died before it was completed. For over 70 years the castle was abandoned until the Thousand Islands Corporation bought it for a token euro. Nowadays, it’s a tourist attraction that you can visit.

The landscapes are truly breathtaking , and the cruise is very enjoyable. A true moment of relaxation during a 7-8 day stay in Eastern Canada.

• Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites 1000 Islands : Located 2 km from the cruise departure point. Modern and cozy double room starting from €150 per night, breakfast included. Strong points: indoor swimming pool, sauna, room comfort, good breakfast, tranquility.

3) Toronto (3 days)

Our third stop in this one-week itinerary through Canada takes us onward to Toronto . From the Thousand Islands, it’s a smooth 2.5-hour drive.

Once you hit Toronto , kickstart your exploration with a dive into the city’s main neighbourhoods :

• Kensington Market, the bohemian district and one of the oldest in Toronto. This place is a massive hit with Street Art enthusiasts.
• Chinatown , Toronto’s Chinese neighborhood, is your best bet for the city’s most affordable souvenirs. So, time to stock up on those magnets and mugs!
• The Distillery District, a historical area transformed into a vast pedestrian zone. Filled with unique shops, art galleries, and hip cafés, it’s Toronto’s trendiest neighborhood.

When lunchtime rolls around, make your way to the St. Lawrence Market . This indoor market, over 200 years old, offers the chance to savor amazing local products. You can eat right there at the available tables. It’s a particularly welcoming and warm spot you have to check out.

For the afternoon, we’re off to meet the marine mammals at Ripley’s Aquarium . This is a must-visit in Toronto, being Canada’s largest aquarium home to over 16,000 creatures. Here, you’ll get to walk through an underwater tunnel , and touch rays and even sharks.

I must confess, I’m usually not the biggest fan of such activities, but this one is interactive and well-put-together. If you’re visiting Toronto with family , your kids are sure to love it, too!

As the day winds down, I suggest heading up the CN Tower, Toronto’s iconic attraction. A panoramic elevator will whisk you up to 346 meters in a mere 58 seconds !

Here, you can walk on a transparent glass floor and marvel at the breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city. The experience is truly awe-inspiring! The best time to go up is at sunset.

For adrenaline junkies and thrill-seekers, why not try out the EdgeWalk ? Safely harnessed, you’ll get to walk along the tower’s outer edge , just a mere 1.5 meters wide! Just a heads up, this little scare will cost you a pretty penny – $225 (even the price is scary)! 😝 )

Finally, to end your day on a romantic note, consider dining at the CN Tower’s restaurant . The restaurant actually rotates during your meal, so you’ll enjoy a full 360-degree view of Toronto.

If you want to dig deeper into the city’s history , consider booking a guided tour of Toronto . Tours are available for all the major neighborhoods I just mentioned:

For the following day in Toronto on this week-long Canadian trip, we’re heading to a rather unusual place: Casa Loma .

Casa Loma is an authentic medieval-style castle , an uncommon sight in Canada! Back in the day, a wealthy industrialist went all out with a whimsical $3.5 million splurge. Talk about living large! It should be noted that he quickly went bankrupt and didn’t get to enjoy it for long (poor chap…).

You can explore the many rooms of the castle , but the highlight is the view it offers from the top of the towers , simply one of Toronto’s finest.

The 2-hectare garden of Casa Loma is also a delight to stroll around, with its fountains, sculptures, and floral arrangements.

The rest of the day in Toronto calls for a cultural expedition to the Royal Ontario Museum , the country’s largest museum. With its part old-stone architecture and glass and aluminum structure, you can’t miss it. Entrance tickets available by clicking here !

The museum covers various subjects from First Nations history to world cultures and natural history. They’ve got a whole area just for dinosaur fossils ! And as the big kid that I am, I have to say, it’s the absolute best part of the museum!

Next, to escape the city bustle and enjoy some greenery, I suggest you spend the afternoon on Toronto’s islands .

You’ll need to catch a ferry from Queens Quay , which takes just about 10 minutes. The ride gives you one of the best views of Toronto’s skyline . You’ve got to see it at night when it’s all lit up – even more stunning!

As the islands are car-free, I’d recommend renting a bike to explore . It’s peaceful and serene, with plenty of beaches to swim or relax and a lovely collection of 1920s holiday homes that are quite a sight.

As you continue your 6, 7, or 8-day adventure in Canada, don’t miss Ontario’s iconic attraction, the Niagara Falls ! They’re just a 1.5-hour drive from Toronto.

Niagara Falls are truly magnificent , a must-see when in Canada! The best and certainly most spectacular way to view them is by taking a cruise at the foot of the Falls . Dressed in your stunning poncho, you’ll get up close and personal with Niagara Falls and end up thoroughly soaked (but all in good fun).

Remember to book your tickets in advance to avoid waiting in line:

After the cruise, you could also go up the Skylon Tower and take in the falls from the panoramic terrace. Tickets can be booked right here !

The “Journey Behind The Falls” activity (click here to book your tickets) also allows you to reach an observation deck, but this time it’s located at the foot of the falls, via tunnels, 40 meters underground.

And if you want to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I recommend flying over the falls in a helicopter . If ever there was a place worth breaking the bank for, this is it. It’s a splurge you’ll remember forever, trust me!

When it comes to the city of Niagara Falls itself, don’t sweat about hanging around there too long. If you’re up for it, take a stroll down Clifton Hill , a street chock-full of attractions ranging from a wax museum to a haunted house. It’s worth a peek just to appreciate the cheesiness of it all!

For the rest of the day, hop onto the Niagara Parkway , a road hugging the Niagara River, stretching between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The region is famous for its vineyards and the road offers gorgeous river views . You’ll eventually land in Niagara-on-the-Lake , a quaint and utterly charming village with its blooming narrow streets and period houses. What a day!

If you’d rather not bother driving in the big city, consider opting for a day-long organized tour .

It’s not so easy to find a hotel that offers good value for money in Toronto . To help you out, I’ve prepared a list of the best hotels depending on your budget.

One last tip: If the place you’re attracted to is available, book it right away . Demand is very high in the city, and the best accommodations disappear (very) quickly!

• The Clarence Park : This youth hostel is located a 10-minute walk from the CN Tower. Dormitory bed from €35 per night. Strong points: the location, the conviviality, curtains for dormitory beds, modernity. An excellent choice for budget accommodation in Toronto !
• Margie Townhome Suites : This guesthouse is located a 5-minute walk from the Eaton Centre. Cozy and pleasant rooms starting from €110. Strong points: the location, the calm, proximity to the metro.
• The Novotel Toronto Centre : Located right next to St. Lawrence Market. Contemporary and very spacious double rooms starting from €150. Strong points: indoor pool, location, excellent breakfast.
• One King West Hotel and Residence : Nestled in Old Toronto, a mere 5-minute walk from the St. Lawrence Market. This joint boasts modern, spacious and elegant suites, complete with stunning city views, starting from €190, with a breakfast option at €17. Strong points: Prime downtown location, top-notch bedding, and the breathtaking views.
• The Omni King Edward Hotel : For anyone looking to treat themselves during their Toronto escapade. You may have noticed, staying in downtown Toronto isn’t exactly cheap, but that’s to be expected given it’s a bustling Canadian tourist hub.

If you’re looking to save a bit and don’t mind staying a bit further out, hotels near the Toronto Airport (about 17km from downtown) generally offer lower rates.

Here are a few suggestions:

4) Ottawa (1 day)

After spending three days exploring Toronto and the Niagara Falls , continue your week-long Canadian road trip by heading towards Ottawa . Can you imagine touring Canada in a week and skipping its capital? Unthinkable!

Be prepared for a full morning of driving, roughly 4 hours and 15 minutes. It’s the longest leg of the trip, so I’d advise you to head out early in the morning so you can make it to Ottawa by lunchtime .

Speaking of lunch, make your way to the Byward Market . Here you can grab a quick bite from the delectable local produce, or sit down at one of the many restaurants in the area. For dessert, try the Beaver Tail , a traditional Canadian pastry that’ll rock your world.

Since the market is right next to Parliament Hill , the city’s main tourist attraction, you can continue your day by admiring the stunning site. All the Canadian Parliament buildings are nestled on this hill.

Next, I’d highly recommend a visit to one of the best and most fascinating museums in Canada, the Canadian Museum of History . To me, it’s the ultimate must-do cultural activity in Ottawa . Don’t forget to grab your tickets ahead of time by clicking here !

The museum details the history of Canada from the First Nations onwards. This is where you’ll find the world’s largest collection of totem poles ! It’s a well-curated and fascinating museum. To fully explore and appreciate its grandeur, you’ll need at least 3 hours.

As the day winds down, head to the Rideau Canal for a stroll along the banks of this UNESCO World Heritage site. And if you’re visiting Ottawa in winter , grab your skates! The Rideau Canal transforms into the world’s largest natural ice rink !

If you’re not up for walking, there are several ways to discover Ottawa (click the orange links to book):

• A hop-on hop-off bus tour
• A narrated cruise on the Rideau Canal
• An electric boat cruise 
• A guided tour on an amphibious bus : my favorite as it combines both bus and mini-cruise!

While Ottawa may be the capital of Canada, it’s still a small city.

So, the selection of accommodations is somewhat limited. You should book a room from my selection in advance and not to dally too long.

• HI Ottawa Jail Hostel : This youth hostel is housed in a restored old jail. You’ll be sleeping in upgraded cells (I assure you!) Dorm bed from €30, breakfast included. Strong points: the uniqueness of the place, excellent location, and delicious breakfast. A great affordable choice for lodging in Ottawa !

5) Mont-Tremblant (1 day)

For the fifth and penultimate stop on your week-long journey through Eastern Canada, head over to Mont-Tremblant . The drive from Ottawa takes roughly 1 hour and 50 minutes.

On the way, I’d recommend making a pit stop to explore Omega Park, located in Montebello, about 50 minutes from Ottawa. Got kids with you? Here’s the perfect family activity ! At Omega Park, you can discover Canadian wildlife from the comfort of your car. It’s amazing! The animals roam freely, so you can feed and observe them up close. A fantastic experience!

By early afternoon, you should be reaching Mont-Tremblant. The best way to discover Mont-Tremblant is to go hiking in the park . One of the most accessible trails is La Roche and La Corniche .

You can also take part in water sports on the lake (in summer) or skiing (in winter). If you’re lucky enough to take this week-long Canadian road trip in the fall, you’ll be dazzled by the vibrant colors of the trees! And don’t forget to take a walk around the cute pedestrian village .

• Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Mont Tremblant : Located a 5-minute drive from the village center. Spacious and inviting double rooms from €100 per night, including breakfast. Strong points: Indoor pool, room size and comfort, free parking, friendly staff. It’s my favorite for its value for money in Mont-Tremblant !
• Château Beauvallon : Situated 10 min away from Mont-Tremblant. Well-equipped suite with balcony and kitchenette from €125 per night. Strong points: Indoor and heated outdoor pools, tranquility, shuttle service to Mont-Tremblant.
• Le Grand Lodge Mont-Tremblant : This hotel is located on the shores of Lake Ouimet. Comfortable and spacious double rooms from €170 per night, breakfast at €17. Strong points: Stunning lake views, location, indoor pool, spa, the all-wood hotel style with fireplace in the rooms.
• Fairmont Tremblant Hotel : This luxury hotel is nestled at the foot of Mont-Tremblant, right next door to the pedestrian village. Comfy double rooms starting at €300 per night, with breakfast for €30. Strong points: all the perks of a 5*, the location, heated pools, top-notch service, stunning facilities. The drive from Mont-Tremblant will take about an hour and a half. Depending on your return flight, you can head straight to the airport or choose to explore Montreal a bit more!

Dal 15 marzo 2016 gli stranieri esenti da visto, tra cui i cittadini italiani, diretti in Canada per via aerea dovranno munirsi prima dell’imbarco dell’”electronic Travel Authorization” (eTA), similmente a quanto avviene per l’ingresso negli Stati Uniti con l’ESTA. La richiesta dell’eTA dovrà essere effettuata online. A tale fine saranno necessari un passaporto valido, una carta di credito e un indirizzo di posta elettronica.
 L’eTA sarà collegata elettronicamente al passaporto del richiedente e sarà valida per cinque anni o fino alla scadenza del passaporto, se questa interviene prima.
Il relativo costo è di 7 dollari canadesi. Si attira l’attenzione sulla diffusione di siti internet non ufficiali ed il connesso rischio di truffe, si raccomanda pertanto di consultare la pagina web  http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-facts-it.asp   per maggiori informazioni, in lingua italiana, sulle corrette procedure da seguire.
 L’autorizzazione ”eTA” non garantisce, tuttavia, l’automatica ammissione in territorio canadese, che è lasciata alla discrezionalità delle competenti Autorità doganali e di frontiera.

Viaggi all’estero dei minori

. Si ricorda, in ogni caso, che per poter viaggiare in Canada, il minore di 18 anni straniero deve avere l’autorizzazione di un genitore o di un tutore. Il documento che autorizza il viaggio del minore deve anche indicare la destinazione e la durata del soggiorno.
Se il minore è accompagnato da un solo genitore, si consiglia di far predisporre una lettera di autorizzazione firmata dall’altro genitore.
Il genitore separato, con custodia condivisa del figlio minore, deve mostrare la prova dell’assenso al viaggio dell’altro genitore.
Qualsiasi altro adulto deve avere una autorizzazione scritta dei genitori o del tutore legale del minore.
Gli agenti del Canada Border Service Agency si riservano in ogni caso il diritto di interrogare i minori per verificare che non sussista alcuna ipotesi di sottrazione.

Tassa governativa sul passaporto

La tassa governativa annuale mediante applicazione sul libretto di contrassegno telematico (o marca da bollo) del costo di € 40,29 è stata abolita dal 24 giugno 2014.

Il contributo amministrativo da € 73,50 previsto dal decreto IRPEF si paga solo al momento del rilascio e non è richiesto quindi per i passaporti già emessi. Per eventuali chiarimenti vi preghiamo di consultare il link http://www.poliziadistato.it/faq/view/34130/

Vaccinazioni obbligatorie

Valuta e Mance

Formalità valutarie:.

Nessuna per importazione di somme inferiori a 10.000 dollari canadesi. Le somme superiori a 10.000 dollari canadesi devono invece essere dichiarate all’arrivo in Canada. La moneta ufficiale è il dollaro canadese. Sono accettate tutte le principali carte di credito e sono anzi indispensabili nel caso di versamento della cauzione per il noleggio autovetture o quale garanzia in albergo.

Quando si fa shopping, ricordate che i prezzi esposti sono generalmente al netto delle tasse. Per la maggior parte dei beni e dei servizi, occorre aggiungere circa il 15%. Per quanto riguarda le mance, il servizio non è mai incluso nel conto ed è consuetudine lasciare la mancia. Per i conti nei ristoranti, locali, ecc, in genere si consiglia di calcolare circa il 15% dell’importo da pagare. Lo stesso vale per tassisti, fattorini, ecc.

L’ora legale è in vigore dalla seconda domenica di marzo alla prima domenica di novembre. L’elenco dettagliato per Province è consultabile all’indirizzo:  http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/2011.html .
 L’ora legale entra in vigore la prima domenica di Aprile e termina l’ultima domenica di Ottobre.

The Best of Ontario 7-Day Itinerary

This itinerary takes you through southern Ontario’s highlights, from Toronto to Niagara Falls, the Muskoka Lakes, Algonquin Provincial Park, and Ottawa, the nation’s capital. It’s easiest to do if you have a car, or pick up a rental car when you leave Toronto (you won’t need it in the city).

Fly into Toronto . Visit the CN Tower for great views across the city and Lake Ontario. If you dare, take the EdgeWalk, a thrilling walk suspended outside the tower, 116 stories above the ground. Back on earth, stroll along the harbor front, then stop for lunch at St. Lawrence Market on your way to the galleries and shops in The Distillery District . Catch the ferry to the Toronto Islands for a late-afternoon walk or bike ride. Wrap up your day with dinner downtown or in the Entertainment District .

Spend today continuing to explore Toronto. Tour the Frank Gehry-designed Art Gallery of Ontario or the massive Royal Ontario Museum . After checking out the entertaining Bata Shoe Museum , have lunch in Chinatown or Kensington Market , or linger over afternoon tea at the deluxe Shangri-La Hotel. Wander along Queen Street West for shopping and gallery-hopping, have dinner at one of the eclectic restaurants, and stop for a nightcap at one of the clubs.

Day 3 (250 kilometers/155 miles, 4 hours round-trip)

You’re going to Niagara Falls for the day; either rent a car or book a day tour. Don’t miss the Hornblower Niagara Cruise , a boat tour under the falls. Niagara Falls has plenty of other attractions, including the White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aero Car; for the most dramatic Falls views, take a Niagara Helicopters Flightseeing Tour. From the falls, it’s a half-hour drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you can wander the historic downtown and tour local wineries. Have an early dinner, then see a play at the Shaw Festival before returning to Toronto.

Day 4 (250 kilometers/155 miles, 3.5-4 hours).

Today you’ll make a leisurely drive northeast to Muskoka Cottage Country , but your first stop en route is just outside Toronto at the excellent McMichael Canadian Art Collection . Continuing north, visit Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst to cruise on a restored steamship and tour a heritage boat museum. In Bracebridge, browse the shops in the cute downtown and sample a butter tart at one of the cafés. Continue to Huntsville to have dinner and spend the night.

Day 5 (120 kilometers/75 miles, 2 hours)

From Huntsville, you’ll enter Algonquin Provincial Park through the West Gate. Algonquin measures over 7,500 square kilometers (nearly 3,000 square miles), so there’s plenty to explore. Go for a hike or rent a canoe at the Portage Store. Walk through the exhibits at the Algonquin Visitors Centre; there’s usually an interesting nature program happening, as well. Try to schedule your visit for a Thursday to join in the evening Wolf Howl. Spend the night at one of the park lodges.

Day 6 (250 kilometers/155 miles, 3.5-4 hours)

Drive out the park’s East Gate, following Highway 60 east toward Ottawa. Your first Ottawa-area stop will actually be across the Ottawa River in Gatineau at the massive Canadian Museum of History , where you can learn almost anything about Canada’s history and culture. After checking into your Ottawa hotel, browse the shops and galleries in the ByWard Market neighborhood. Stay for dinner and catch some music at one of the clubs.

Get to the Parliament Buildings first thing in the morning to take a tour. If you’re visiting in July or August, watch the Changing the Guard, complete with red-coated, fur-hat-wearing guards. For a dose of culture, go to either the National Gallery of Canada or the Canadian War Museum , then take an afternoon stroll or cycle along the Rideau Canal. Have dinner in Chinatown, Little Italy, or Wellington West. Wrap up your Ontario week with a concert or play at the National Arts Centre or the Great Canadian Theatre Company .

What to Do in Vancouver for a Week: 7 Day Itinerary

Day 1: Stanley Park & Gourmet Food

• Start the day with a visit to Stanley Park , a 1,000-acre public park with scenic trails, beaches, and wildlife.
• Take a walk along the Vancouver Seawall , a scenic 22 km paved path that offers stunning views of the city skyline and mountains.
• Visit the Vancouver Aquarium , one of Canada’s largest aquariums with over 50,000 animals including beluga whales, sea otters, and dolphins.
• Finish your day with a meal in Yaletown : many of Vancouver’s best restaurants are here including Tasty Indian Bistro , Cioppino’s and the Blue Water Cafe .

Day 2: Discover Granville Island

• Head to Granville Island , a bustling marketplace and artisan stronghold with hundreds vendors selling fresh produce, seafood, and artisanal goods.

If you’re visiting Vancouver for a week you should see major attractions like the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain, explore exciting neighbourhoods like Gastown, Commercial Drive and Granville Island, and lock in outdoor activities like the city’s beaches & Queen Elizabeth Park.

How much spending money for a week in Vancouver?

• A decent hostel bed (shared dorm)
• 3 meals from cheap take away places

Can you spend a week in Vancouver?

Yes, it is absolutely possible to spend a week in Vancouver but to do so you’ll need to include all sorts of outdoor excursions and generally spread out the attractions to just one or two a day. if you’re looking to just see the major sights though without living the city and nature, a four day Vancouver itinerary should be enough.

Is a week in Vancouver too long?

Honestly, if you’re using Vancouver as part of a greater trip around the west coast of North America, then three or four days should be enough to check off the major sights. If you’re coming here to really get your hand on the pulse though, a seven day visit to Vancouver is the perfect amount to master the city.

Toronto Itinerary 7 days – How to spend 2-7 days in Toronto

Toronto – our first home in Canada. We have tons of amazing stories and places to show you from our years living in Toronto. We were living there as students and as young professionals (for a brief period of time), but we have had the MOST incredible time in that city. We actually keep thinking of moving back to Toronto some day. Anyhow, this post is all about having a great time in Toronto. We have handpicked the attractions, tours and experiences for Toronto Itinerary 7 days. This itinerary and guide will be helpful for first time visitors to the city as well as regular travelers as we share some of our insider tips. Feel free to customize the itinerary according to your taste and time in Toronto.

Toronto Itinerary 7 days – How to spend 2-7 days in Toronto

Getting to Toronto Ontario

Toronto is the commercial capital of Canada. Canada’s capital city is Ottawa (if you didn’t know that already, but it is located in the same province of Ontario). Toronto is serviced by the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), one of the largest in the country, by passenger volume. If you are flying to Toronto internationally or from any American airport, you will arrive here.

Distance from Toronto Pearson to Downtown Toronto is about 30 kilometres.

Light Rail  – Connectivity via light rail is fastest and easiest to get from the airport to the city centre. It takes 45 -50 minutes and will cost $3.50 CAD. Carry exact change or buy tickets at the station. The trip is not straightforward and involves a few transfers as the airport is located in Mississauga, a suburban city.

Drive  – You can rent a car and drive from the airport. Under normal conditions you will arrive in 35 minutes.

Express Shuttle  – There is an express shuttle available for $24-25 CAD. It takes 30 minutes

Taxi  – Taxis are available from terminal 1 and 3 and will cost around $50-75 CAD depending on the downtown zone. The cab ride is for 30-35 minutes.

Private transfers  – Private transfers are a great way to reach Toronto downtown without the public transit hassle and if you are pressed for time. Private transfers take 30 minutes to get to your location in Central Toronto. BOOK YOUR TRANSFER HERE

Where to stay in Toronto Ontario?

Toronto is HUGE. There are many suburban areas where you can find good accommodation and the light rail makes it easier to commute. For a short trip to Toronto, staying in the central area is a good idea. You will be close to all the sightseeing areas and awesome restaurants and bars.

GTA or Greater Toronto Area is the most densely populated area in the city. It comprises of Toronto downtown, and 25 regional/surrounding municipalities. If this is your first visit, you can avoid a few areas like Scarborough and Brampton. Some areas in Markham and near Mississauga (close to the airport), you will be able to find decent hotels.

Luxury Options in Downtown Toronto

• 2-minute walk from King Station subway stop, a 7-minute walk from St. Lawrence Market and 2 km from the landmark CN Tower.

Toronto Airport Hotel (mid range)

If you are planning to stay close to the airport, choose a hotel in Mississauga or Etiobioke area. Here is a recommendation

Best time to visit Toronto

Toronto experiences all the 4 seasons and it is very hard for me to actually choose one, as I love the city in all of its seasonal colors. But…but if I REALLY have to pick one, it has to be fall or autumn. The mesmerizing orange maple leaves on the ground will melt your heart and you will just wanna stay here (well, that’s what happened to us)

• Autumn/Fall:  Autumn or fall starts from September to November. It is time for pumpkin spice lattes and booties. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold. Schools and colleges start their semesters in September, so you can expect less crowds in sightseeing areas. It is shoulder season so good deals for hotels and flights.
• Winter: Winter is from December (sometimes late November) to early February. Temperatures drop to – 15 degree Celsius (could be higher with windchill). If you have been to New York City in winters, our winters in Toronto are similar. Winter packing essentials are important. Perfect time to visit for Christmas markets and festivities, hot choco and new years celebrations at the Harbour front. Read our guide to visiting Toronto in Winter
• Spring:  Shoulder month as well. Spring months are from late February to May. Weather is slowly getting warmer and days longer. Only problem is that as the snow is melting you will experience slushy sidewalks and roads. If you have to visit during this season, plan for Aril or later.
• Summer : Of course, like most places in the world, summer is full of fun and festivities (and crowded too). Great time to be outdoors, enjoy patio brunches, camping at provincial parks or soak the sun at beaches/harbour front. Book your trip ahead of time, so that you don’t miss your preferred area of stay. It gets BUSY around this time of year!

Pro tip 1:  Canada uses Canadian dollars as currency (CAD$). Some restaurants might accept USD$. Credit cards are widely accepted and you can easily find a debit machine to take out cash.

Pro Tip 2 : For sightseeing (and budget), here are 2 options for you

• Toronto City Pass – For sightseeing for all 7 days, Toronto City Pass is a good idea. You will get access to most of the Toronto attractions for free. BOOK YOUR TORONTO CITY PASS HERE
• Toronto Hop on and Hop off – We use hop on and hop off buses a lot. As we were new in the city, we took the train to downtown and then rode the sightseeing bus. It was convenient without having to remember the bus stops or walk miles. Remember hop on and off are not guided tours – they are sightseeing buses (like transit) and you are at will to get down when you like and where you like! You can choose between 24 or 48 hour bus ticket (rest of the days, you will be exploring other areas, so yes this is a good value ticket). BOOK YOUR HOP-ON AND HOP OFF TICKET HERE (24 or 48 hours)

You can explore Toronto without a car. Use light trains, buses, add a few day tours and guided walks and you are GOLDEN!

In order to customize this itinerary, here are a few suggestions. (You can check the detailed itinerary below)

• For a 2 day Toronto trip – Opt for day 1 and 2 OR day 1 and day trip to Niagara Falls
• Visiting for 3 days in Toronto – Choose day 1,2 and Niagara Falls
• 4 days in Toronto –  Choose Day 1 through 4 or switch out day 3 (Toronto neighborhoods) or day 5 (Toronto Islands)

DAY 1 TORONTO ITINERARY – BEST OF TORONTO

Cn tower, casa loma, hockey hall of fame, harbour front, dundas square or night tour.

Welcome to Toronto. We are so excited to show you this amazing city! 

First day in Toronto should start with the city’s FINEST! 

CN Tower is an iconic symbol of the city of Toronto. Its name “CN” originally referred to Canadian National, the railway company that built the tower. Currently its known as  Canadian National Tower.

The tower was completed in 1976, becoming the world’s tallest free-standing structure and world’s tallest tower at the time. It retained this position for close to 32 years. Currently, its world’s number 7th tallest tower.

The CN tower is a communications tower, located in downtown Toronto. You can access the tower through its high speed elevators to reach the observation deck and enjoy stunning views of the city of Toronto. You can also enjoy a thrilling walk on the gorilla glass floor. 

When you access the observation deck, you will also receive a interpretive guide to learn more about the tower’s history and how it was constructed.

CN Tower also has a thrilling attraction called the EdgeWalk. The EdgeWalk is the first of its kind in North America. It is the world’s highest full-circle hands-free walk on a 5 feet wide ledge encircling the top of the CN Tower’s main pod – at 116 storeys above the ground. If you love this adventure, take this walk outside – around the circumference of the roof of the CN Tower!

There is a restaurant on the same floor (revolving restaurant named CN Tower 360 restaurant ). There are additional bistros and cafes inside the tower complex. 

CN Tower is open everyday except for Christmas Day.  CN Tower has an admission fee of $58 CAD for adults for tower experience. 

Our second stop for the day is the Casa Loma. Did you know that Toronto has a pretty castle in the heart of the city? The answer is YES – Casa Loma. 

The Casa Loma is a castle built by Toronto businessman Henry Pallet in 1911. Its style of architecture is Gothic revival style. Casa Loma means “Hill House” in Spanish.

Today you can explore the castle, which is now a historic house museum and a Toronto landmark. The castle shares stories from the family of Henry Pallet. It has many rooms, gardens, underground cellar and stables to explore.

We spent a couple of hours in the castle. I really liked the castle (well, anything with history fascinates me- big or small). 

There is an entry fee for the castle – $23 – 33 CAD for admission. They are open daily from 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m local time. 

Hockey Fall of Fame

Hockey Hall of Fame is located on Yonge Street in Toronto. Its dedicated to the history of ice hockey, it is a museum and a hall of fame. It holds exhibits about players, teams, National Hockey League (NHL) records, memorabilia and NHL trophies, including the Stanley Cup.

If you wish to explore the stadium or the museum, there is an entry fee of $20 CAD for adults.

Harbourfront

Located in core downtown Toronto, Harbourfront neighborhood is iconic landmark of this city. The neighborhood is located on Lake Ontario and it provides stunning views of the CN Tower and the downtown skyscrapers.

It was almost dusk when we reached the Harbourfront. Its a great place to hang out and spend a romantic evening! 

If you prefer, you can spend the entire evening here. You will find tons of bars and restaurants in and around the area for dinner. 

Dundas Square 

Yonge-Dundas Square is located within the Downtown Yonge Business Area. Its a space/square wherein public performances and other events are hosted on a regular basis. There are many cafe’s, restaurants and shopping areas close by. The square has seating areas and fountains and gives quite a metropolitan-feel in the evenings!

We had dinner at a nearby Hard-Rock Cafe and spent the rest of the evening/night in the Yonge-Dundas area.

DAY 2 TORONTO ITINERARY – MORE OF TORONTO

Royal ontario museum, art gallery of ontario, saint lawrence, queen west, haunted tour.

For day 2 of Toronto Itinerary, let’s more of the historical and arts side of the city with museums. 

Royal Ontario Museum

Royal Ontario Museum, popularly known as ROM is one of the largest museums in North America AND the largest one in Canada. It is known for its architectural beauty and its collection of arts displays. 

Royal Ontario Museum is a museum of art, world culture and natural history.

Arts Gallery of Ontario

Another museum and gallery close to ROM is the Arts Gallery of Ontario. Its a massive gallery with about 45,000 square meters, making it one of the largest galleries in North America.

The Arts Gallery has arts displays, a library, student space, gallery workshop space, artist-in-residence, a high-end restaurant,cafeteria , research centre, theatre and lecture hall, and gift shop.

After the museums and gallery, its time for FOOD and PORK! So the story is that the city of Toronto was historically known as “Hogtown”. Hence it only makes sense to try some pork delicacies in the city. 

Saint Lawrence Market and Queen West Street (sightseeing and food tour)

St. Lawrence Market is a vintage culinary neighborhood of Toronto. The market is known for its peameal bacon sandwich which can be found here. Take a food tour to explore the beautiful market and learn about its history.

In this tour, you will get to taste a Southern American spin on a classic Canadian dish, as well as some popular German street food with a Canadian twist. A street car ride is also included.

If food tour is not your thing, we still recommend taking a stroll at the marketplace and then settling in for a relaxed lunch. You will find cuisines of all kinds here as well. 

Queen Street 

Queen Street is a major thoroughfare in Toronto. It is often compared to New York City’s Soho. The Queen street is full of trendy pubs, restaurants and quirky sights with graffiti in various houses and lanes.  

It is a hip and happening street. You can easily walk around and browse many boutique stores from high end shopping to casual items. 

The Toronto City Hall is located on Queen street west. The famed “TORONTO” letters can be found at the Nathan Philips Square (in Queen street west).

Optional Haunted Tour

Okay, we took a haunted tour once during Halloween and LOVED it (Salil did more then I did. I am scared and I shake even if a paper flies lol). So if you are into haunted stuff, this tour is worth checking out. 

There are three seasonal guided tours: the original 90-minute Haunted Walk, the Campus Secrets and Spectres, or the Ghosts and Spirits of the Distillery that is offered. In these tours, you will learn about the chilling tales about the darker side of Toronto’s history.

DAY 3 CULTURE AND FOOD TORONTO

Downtown exploration, kensington market, chinatown, distiller district.

We love exploring, walking around downtown/core areas of major cities. That’s our kinda hiking!

Toronto didn’t disappoint us. Skyscrapers, malls, lights, side-cafes, busy-people everywhere. In every corner of downtown Toronto, there are historical insights and amazing architecture. You can sign up for free walks around certain important areas like Union Station, Bay Street, Yonge-Dundas, University Ave, etc

Keeping that in mind, let’s take you to a colorful marketplace. Kensington Market is a pedestrian friendly bohemian neighborhood. This Toronto area is characterized by colorful buildings, indie shops, vintage boutiques and arts spaces. 

The Kensington Market is home to many specialty grocers, bakeries and cheese shops. There are trendy bars, cafes and restaurants to suit every traveler.

After the tour, explore the area a bit more and then settle down for lunch. Don’t drink yet, as we will be heading to the Toronto distillery district next.

Distillery District

Distillery district presents a slice of Victorian and British legacy in Toronto Ontario.  At the Distillery District, you will see Victorian buildings and cobblestone streets that are full of history. Guess what, you will be at a British whisky distillery site here.

Today these vintage spaces are occupied with indie restaurants, bars, boutiques, and theaters.

Shopping in Toronto

In the evening, its time to SHOP. Toronto is great for shopping. Yorkdale Mall, Toronto Eaton Centre, Scarborough Town Centre, Fairview Mall are some of the shopping malls that I love! If I have to pick 2, it has to be Toronto Eaton Centre and Scarborough Town Centre. Eaton Centre is located in Downtown and Scarborough Town Centre is located in the Scarborough area. Both the malls are easily connected by Toronto LRT. 

Toronto also has an outlet mall area. So if shopping is a BIG ticket item on your list, them consider spending half a day at the premium outlet malls. There are bus shuttle services available to take you from Toronto downtown to the outlet malls and back. See, you don’t a car!

DAY 4 TORONTO ITINERARY – Day Trip to Niagara Falls from Toronto

There are many places in and around Toronto, that are very easily accessible and worth visiting. Bruce Peninsula (4 hrs), 1000 Islands (3.75 hrs), Niagara Falls (2 hrs), Ottawa (5 hrs), Montreal (6 hrs) – are some of the cities/areas that are worth visiting in your trip to Toronto.

Niagara Falls is a MUST visit when you are in Toronto for more then 2 days. And trust us, the Canadian side of the Niagara falls are MORE stunning than the American side. Don’t trust us? 

Well, let’s take that DAY TRIP TO NIAGARA!

You can rent a car and drive to Niagara in 2 hours (one way) from Toronto. Many also cross the border at Niagara Falls to head to the US.

Greyhound also operates daily buses to Niagara. Once you reach the bus depot in Niagara, you will have to walk a little to reach the Niagara Falls (city). 

There are many day tour services available from Toronto to Niagara Falls and undertaking this trip with be worthwhile. This recommended Niagara day tour takes you to the three falls  – the Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. You can also take an optional cruise to the base of Horseshoe Falls. You will explore a vineyard and sample some wine!

At the Niagara Falls, you can also take a horse carriage, enjoy the “ maid of the mist ” ride or view evening lights over the waters. Definitely take some time to eat and wander through the entertainment district. The Entertainment District has bowling alleys, haunted houses, Ripley’s believe or not, cool bars and TONS of free entertainment to keep you engaged!

DAY 5 TORONTO ITINERARY – CENTREVILLE Toronto Islands and nearby attractions

The Centreville Amusement Park is a park located on Centre Island, which is a part of the Toronto Islands. This place is a must visit during summer season with over 30 rides, picnic areas, etc. We spent an entire day here, enjoying the Toronto sun. We took a ferry ride to the Centre Island from Queen’s Quay West.

About Toronto Islands – The Toronto Islands (formerly known as Island of Hiawatha and also known as Menecing , meaning “On the Island” ) are a chain of small islands in Lake Ontario, Canada. The islands are home to parkland, the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, several yacht clubs, Centreville Amusement Park and Hanlan’s Beach. The island community is considered to be the largest urban car-free community in North America. 

There are tons of options for food, souvenirs shops and activities. If you wish a beach experience, greenery and nature around, this is a perfect place. There are picnic tables by the water side (with geese around) as well.

The Toronto Island also includes the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse which is considered to be the oldest existing lighthouse on the Great Lakes and one of Toronto’s oldest buildings. The murder of its first operator, German-born John Paul Radelmüller, at the site in 1815; makes for one of the most intriguing murder mysteries. That case was never solved and at this point, it probably never will be. As the story goes, he died at the hands of a couple of soldiers from Fort York looking to get their hands on moonshine.

DAY 6 TORONTO ITINERARY – Neighborhood Exploration (Chester, Christie and Old Mills and dine at Gerard Street) OR Canada’s Wonderland

On your day 6 of Toronto itinerary, explore some lesser known areas, travel in local (light rail/LRT) trains and relax in the green space that this mega city has to offer. (We also have a plan B, if neighborhood exploration doesn’t excite you). 

Toronto has great trails, neighborhoods and history in its every nook and corner. Toronto Transit and LRT lines are easy, convenient and economical ways to explore this amazing city.

Chester, Christie, Old Mills, Dine at Gerard Street

Chester, Christie and Old Mills are 3 subway stations that has great trails, amazing eating areas and shopping venues to explore. 

Chester is a subway station on the Bloor–Danforth line in Toronto, Canada. The station is located on Chester Avenue just north of Danforth Avenue.

Christie is a station on the Bloor–Danforth line of the subway system in Toronto, Canada. It is located on the east side of Christie Street just north of Bloor Street West, and opened in 1966 as part of the original segment of the subway line.

Old Mills is a subway station on Line 2 Bloor–Danforth in Toronto, Canada. It is located at Old Mill Terrace and Humber Boulevard.

Danforth Avenue (located along Bloor- Danforth subway line) is also popularly known as Greek Town. Every year there is a Greek Food Festival, held here called the Taste of Danforth. 

If you travel by the Bloor-Danforth line – you can get off at Chester and it will take you to a peaceful neighborhood with school grounds, shops and greenery all around. 

Chester area has a look-out area, that is worth visiting. Its very romantic and quiet there. Old Mills has Lake Shore that offers stunning views of Downtown Toronto and CN Tower. It also offers great site for photography and light strolls, including picnic during summers and bird watching. 

In the evening, head to Gerard Street in city centre area. Gerard Street is full of fantastic East Indian/Pakistani restaurants. So a must visit if you like Indian food. Food is affordable and delicious! 

If neighborhood exploration is not your thing, then plan B for you is to explore Canada’s Wonderland. 

Canada’s Wonderland

Canada’s Wonderland is a theme park based in Vaughan, Ontario, which is about 40 kilometers from Downtown Toronto.

Canada’s Wonderland is a major attraction and is usually busy during the summer months. There are joy rides, shopping arenas, entertainment galleries within the theme park. To access the rides and the park you will have to purchase an entry pass. You can either purchase an annual or seasonal or per entry pass. 

You can spend a full day here – there are SO much to do. Take a ride at the Leviathan and the Behemoth – Canada’s tallest and fastest roller coasters! We would love to show you our “scared” facial expressions from the Behemoth, but that’s for another day, we still have one more day of the Toronto itinerary to cover 🙂

DAY 7 TORONTO ITINERARY – Day trips to the surrounding areas OR pick a local event in Toronto

Toronto is more then the tall buildings and fancy distillery district. We have many provincial and national parks nearby that are worth visiting during your trip to Toronto. You can pick and choose one day trip from the suggested ideas below or if you prefer to stay in Toronto, check out some of the local events in the city.

Day trips from Toronto

• Activities : Hiking, camping, tubing, museum
• Activities :  Scenic walks, lift lock cruises
• Norfolk County – Suburb in Southern Ontario. 2 hours drive from Toronto. More about Norfolk County

Local Events:

A great way to experience local life is attending participating in local events. Lots of options to choose from like live music events, food fest, literary fest, hockey nights, Christmas Markets, etc
