  • Air walkers, also known as air gliders, are exercise machines that provide a great way to get a full-body, calorie-burning, low-impact aerobic workout at home.
  • Though they might look a little unorthodox, air walkers offer an easy method for keeping fit, even if you only have 10 to 15 minutes a day for exercise.
  • Our top pick, the Sunny Health & Fitness Air Walk Trainer , isn't just the best overall but also our favorite budget model as it delivers smooth movement while also being easy to assemble and compact.

Insider Today

When someone first gave me an air walker for my home gym , I tried it and wondered, how in the world is this exercise? All I'm doing is swinging my feet. After about 10 minutes of nonstop striding, however, I broke a sweat and realized that continuing for another 10 to 20 minutes at a brisk clip would constitute a decent full-body aerobic workout .

Air walkers — especially those with built-in resistance — provide low-impact exercise for your leg, arm, and abdominal muscles. Think of it as an elliptical trainer's low-tech, less glamorous, space- and money-saving cousin.

On an air walker, you keep your legs mostly straight as you move them back and forth (or even side to side on some models) as opposed to bending and straightening them like on an elliptical. Also, air gliders are smaller and more economical, making them convenient and portable pieces of home exercise equipment that don't need electricity to function properly.

To find those worth owning, we've tested air walkers from brands like Gazelle and Sunny Health & Fitness, each of which offered its own unique take on the tried-and-true design. No matter if you want a basic model, something to use outside, or one that comes standard with a variety of workouts (who doesn't want to work out with Tony Little?), the following guide has you covered.

We've also included some tips on how to shop for an air walker and some insight into the air walker workout , at the end of this guide. As with any health and exercise product, follow the instructions, and practice safe use. If you have any health-related concerns, consult a medical professional before using them.

Here are the best air walkers:

  • Best air walker overall: Sunny Health & Fitness Air Walk Trainer
  • Best basic air walker: Gazelle Edge
  • Best outdoor air walker: Stamina Outdoor Fitness Strider
  • Best deluxe air walker: Gazelle Supreme

Best overall

sky trek exercise glider

The Sunny Health & Fitness Air Walk Trainer is not only top-rated, but it's also the best-priced model for striding your way to cardiorespiratory fitness.

Pros: Smooth operation, compact body, easy assembly, great price

Cons: Only moderately intensive, no resistance, flimsy for some

Believe it or not, the Sunny Health & Fitness Air Walk Trainer is also the lowest priced model on our list of top picks. Use this budget-friendly yet high-performing equipment to tone your muscles and get a full-body, low-impact cardio-aerobic workout. In addition to exercising your legs and arms, this model works your abdominal muscles as you maintain an upright posture while gliding.

Unlike most air walker models, the Sunny Health & Fitness Air Walker Trainer has a vertically adjustable abdominal pad for support and comfort. The pad is able to be removed for more room, allowing you to instead use your abdominals even more for stability and endurance.

It has a sturdy steel frame, oversized nonslip footpads/pedals , and an LCD monitor that conveniently displays workout information like time, count, total distance, and calories burned. People weighing up to 225 pounds can stretch their calf-, thigh- and gluteal muscles with the 30-inch stride length.

When not being used, the space-saving Sunny Health & Fitness Air Walk Trainer folds down to half its open length (from 29 inches to 15 inches) for a small footprint and easy storage.

This walker offers a smooth, quiet operation, and allows you to start off in a slow walk to warm up before progressing to a faster run — all in one continuous movement. Made for all ages, this model is popular with former runners and people up to their 80s because it's gentle on the ankles, knees, and back.

Best basic air walker

sky trek exercise glider

For people who want a no-frills yet effective air walker, the Gazelle Edge is the way to go — dependable, glides smoothly, and provides a good workout.

Pros: Smooth, stable, and durable

Cons: No resistance, squeaks

Although less fancy than the high-end Gazelle Supreme , the Gazelle Edge still does the job. It delivers a cardio-aerobic, total-body workout that burns calories and tones muscles while being easy on the joints — not to mention, fun. This basic model doesn't have any resistance, but it does have a patented, dual-action split suspension that provides a complete range of motion and smooth, fluid movement.

The Gazelle Edge is great for people new to gliders and walkers, yet still accommodates more challenging exercises. It allows users to increase intensity as they please and can handle both interval training workouts and power sprint routines.

As an owner of a Gazelle Edge owner, I like that it's able to accommodate both quick and light workouts, as well as intense cardio burning sessions. During my time with the Edge, the machine developed a bit of a squeak, however, a little WD-40 helped it get back to gliding along quietly.

The Gazelle Edge has a durable 1.5-inch rolled steel frame, foam-covered handlebars, extra-wide non-skid foot platforms, and a computer that tracks speed, distance, time, and calories burned. It has a maximum weight capacity of 250 pounds (the more heavy-duty, slightly more expensive model with a maximum weight capacity of 300 pounds is the Gazelle Freestyle ). And, this walker folds up for storage.

Best for outdoors

sky trek exercise glider

Enjoy a breath of fresh air while exercising alfresco on the durable and smooth Stamina Outdoor Fitness Strider .

Pros: Provides freedom and motivation to exercise outdoors, sturdy, smooth

Cons: No resistance, screws can develop rust

I first tried an outdoor walker in a nearby park, thinking it was a just playground ride. As corny as this sounds, I found myself meditatively gliding while gazing toward a lake and listening to sounds of nature — and then felt the burn when I climbed off after about 10 minutes. So. the Stamina Outdoor Fitness Strider isn't merely a playground toy but a bona fide piece of exercise equipment that delivers a great low-impact, cardio-aerobic workout.

Designed to be set up and used outside, the Stamina Outdoor Fitness Strider has a large, heavy-gauge steel frame covered with a durable paint that protects it from UV rays and resists rust, chipping, and corrosion in non-salt water environments.

The stable Stamina Outdoor Fitness Strider glides smoothly. It has dual-action handlebars so you can tone and strengthen your upper and lower body simultaneously; it also has stationary handgrips to hold while focusing on the lower body only. Its frame is contoured for comfort and it has large textured pedals for different foot sizes. This sturdy 109-pound walker can accommodate users weighing up to 300 pounds and is easy to assemble.

One of the Stamina Outdoor Fitness Strider 's best features is the option of exercising outdoors. In fact, mixing up the routine and going outside for fresh air provide more motivation for working out. The paint's vibrant green color fits in well with the outdoors, too.

Although this strider doesn't have any built-in resistance, you can increase its intensity by varying your foot position.

Best deluxe air walker

sky trek exercise glider

The Gazelle Supreme is a well-known, top-of-the-line air walker with hydraulic resistance, versatility, and advanced technology.

Pros: Stable, intense workout with pistons/resistance

Cons: Squeaky, assembly instructions a bit confusing for some

Many people have become familiar with air walkers because of the man in the photo above: Fitness trainer Tony Little. You'd see him pitch Gazelle gliders on TV infomercials in the odd hours. While as-seen-on-TV products tend to be gimmicky, the Gazelle has stood the test of time — and is still going strong.

The most deluxe model in the current Gazelle lineup, the Gazelle Supreme , has many features that enhance workouts. It features hydraulic resistance pistons, a patented dual pivot system for a large range of motion and independent movement of the legs, and Soft Glide technology which makes striding smooth and reduces the impact on joints.

It also has grip pulse monitors and a computer that tracks your heart rate, calories burned, distance, time, and speed, to keep you informed of your progress. This model even comes with three workout DVDs ("Total Body Workout," "Tony Little's Quick Shape Workout," and "Tony Little's Ultimate Body & Mind Workout") with helpful exercise tips and demonstrations from Tony Little, himself.

You can do 10 different exercises, including variations on gliding (basic, wide, low, high, forward push and power), body positions (leaning forward or leaning back), and arm movements in order to target, tone, and stretch specific muscles. The hydraulic pistons offer a lot of resistance, too. A downside, however, is that you can't adjust the level of resistance — it's either all (pistons engaged) or none (pistons disengaged).

The Gazelle Supreme 's stable frame, high-density foam handlebars, and extra-wide non-skid foot platforms with shock-absorbing rubber inserts make people feel secure. Its maximum weight capacity is 300 pounds, yet it folds up for easy storage. Numerous users note that the frame squeaks, but this annoyance is easily remedied with WD-40 lubricant spray.

The air walker workout

An air walker is powered by your body's motion and weight, so you control its speed and your workout's intensity —the faster, harder, and wider (or higher) you stride, the more intense the workout.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends adults have "at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity." With the air walker, you'll get aerobic and weight-bearing exercise — important for bone density — that's easy on your joints and ears (i.e., quiet enough for watching television, listening to podcasts, etc.).

From experience, I can say that striding on an air walker definitely raises the heart rate, burns calories, tones muscles, stretches legs and hips, engages the core, and tests a person's balance and coordination. Exercising on an air walker consistently helps you lose weight and strengthen muscles without bulking up.

How to shop for an air walker

When shopping for an at-home air walker, there are a few key criteria to keep in mind. Most importantly, consider its  size, frame, resistance levels,  and  versatility . Here's what to look for specifically:

Size: You want one that accommodates your stride length and weight. Many models fold up for easy storage but if you plan on keeping it set up, make sure it fits your allotted open space.

Frame: One that's strong, stable, and durable in build, yet smooth and fluid in motion is ideal.

Resistance levels: Some models come with adjustable levels of resistance while others offer no resistance. My air walker has no built-in resistance but I simply tie TheraBand resistance bands around the moving bars connecting the handles to the pedals in order to create resistance.

Versatility: In addition to moving front to back, the foot pedals of some models move side to side for additional exercises.

Air walkers are also fairly low-maintenance. Just check for loose screws and oil the joints occasionally to keep them functioning properly.

How to Use Exercise Sliders

Why trust verywell fit.

Verywell Fit / Amelia Manley

Sliders are highly underrated. They look small and unassuming—but that also makes them a travel-friendly accessory , which is why they are a trainer favorite no matter your fitness level. They offer a creative, versatile way of working every single part of your body —we’re talking arms, legs, chest, glutes, and of course, the core —in a joint-friendly manner.

“They are great for beginners, and depending on the exercises you do, they can leave even the fittest person on the ground questioning how fit they really are," says Alonzo Wilson , Founder and Director of Training at Tone House. When you work sliders into your routine , the muscles in your body have to work harder and in different ways than they normally would because they are on an unstable platform (hello balance!). When you add sliders to your arsenal of fitness accessories, it’s important to consider material, comfort, and size . We used these characteristics to name our favorites, along with their surface compatibility, cost, and shape .

Best Overall

Propel athletics premium core sliders.

Very basic design

With our top choice, you aren’t limited to just one training area. These 7-inch sliders allow you to glide over hardwood or laminate floors just as easily as carpet or turf. You just have to flip the discs over—one side is made of EVA foam (which works well for hardwood and tile) and the other is plastic (great for carpet or turf).

The sliders come in neutral colors and in bright hues alike. With your purchase, you also get access to a free online workout. If they aren’t your style, you can always return them—they come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Not the most cushioned option

Mountain climbers, skaters, pikes, lunges—whatever the move, these sliders, which feature a two-sided design, will easily add intensity to any at-home workout.

The durable plastic side smoothly slides across carpet and grass, while the EVA foam glides along any hard surface, including hardwood or tiled floors. And at less than a pound, you can easily carry them in your purse, suitcase, or gym bag without adding bulk or extra weight.

Key Specs: Size: 7.00 x 7.00 x 0.25 Inches | Material: ABS plastic and EVA foam | Made For: Carpet, fitness mats, any hard floor, grass

Best Advanced

Sklz slidez dual-sided exercise glider discs.

Snap together to former a larger slider

Studded side allows for better grip

Newbies may feel intimidated by the shape and the protruding lugs

Lug may not feel comfortable for everyone

Hands down, the best feature of these hexagonal-shaped sliders is that you can snap them together to essentially form one giant slider, making movements where you want to use your legs or arms in tandem easier—think body saws , double knee tucks, pike ups, and more.

Also handy: They are dual-sided. The combo of the foam-cushioned, studded side and the plastic yellow side makes them perfect for a variety of surfaces—including carpet, rugs, pavement, turf, track, gym floors, gravel, mats, and polished cement. Plus, they won’t leave any marks!

Key Specs: Size:  1.73 x 12.2 x 10.94 inches | Material: Plastic, foam | Made For: Carpet, rugs, pavement, turf, track, gym floors, gravel, mats, and polished cement

GoFit Go Slides

Comes with booties, which allows for use on more surfaces

Comes with a training booklet

Comes with a handy carrying pouch

Only comes in one color

The protruding circular pattern may be uncomfortable for some people

The larger surface area of these sliders makes them much easier to maneuver, whether you're performing mountain climbers or pike ups (or any exercise in the included book of exercises) while the ergonomic oval shape easily slides around in all different directions.

Plus attachable booties, which slip over the plastic green side, help make surfaces more slide-worthy while providing protection against floor scuffing. And a unique tread offers a firm grip, keeping hands and feet from slipping off.

Key Specs: Size: 12.3 x7.95 x 2 | Material: Plastic | Made For: Hardwood and Tile

Best with Exercise Guide

Flyte fitness core flyte.

Comes with a handy workout guide and free online workouts

The wheels may be too intense for new-to-slider folks

More expensive than other options listed

Not exactly a traditional slider, this pricy rubber pair uses a cool patented technology gleaned from the aeronautics industry that uses three ball bearings to allow you to shift your weight while sliding in several different directions.

It also works well on a variety of surfaces—rubber, carpet, wood, concrete, and more—without having to be turned over or covered with any additional material. The best part: It comes with an eight-week sliders workout guide that is adaptable, whether you are a novice or a pro.

Key Specs: Size: 17 x 8.5 x 2.5 inches | Material: Rubber | Made For: Rubber, carpet, wood, concrete, and more

Valslides Discs

The oval shape is great for smaller hands and long fingers

They are a little pricey

This oval-shaped pick, which comes in a convenient carrying case, may be a hit with women since they often have smaller hands. It's also a great pick for folks with longer fingers.

Wilson is a big fan of Valslides—they are a staple at his NYC-based boutique fitness studio, Tone House. According to Wilson, these sliders are incredibly durable and work well on most surfaces—including carpet, tile and linoleum floors, and turf.

Armed with the handy instruction guide that’s included, you’ve got everything you need to squeeze in a killer strength and core sesh.

Key Specs: Size: 10.1 x 5 x 2.2 inches | Material: Plastic | Made for: Carpet, tile and linoleum floors, turf

Best for Big Feet

Inmaker exercise sliders.

The 9-inch diameter is ideal for folks with larger feet and hands

Comes with an exercise manual and a carrying bag

Smaller hand folks may find these hard to maneuver

If you’re more focused on keeping your feet in the right place when using exercise sliders than you are on your actual workout, these extra-large sliders might be the perfect pick for you. With a 9-inch diameter, they are wider than most, so you won't have to worry about sliding off during exercises. The larger diameter also makes them a good fit for folks with larger feet (or big hands!).

The sliders are outfitted with a thick EVA padding on one side, adding a level of cushy comfort when your hands are pressing into them. Choose between two colors—black or green.

Key Specs: Size: 8.86 x 8.86 x 0.59 inches | Material: Plastic and foam | Made for: Rugs, carpet, cloth, wood, laminate, and tile

Best for Carpet

Gliding discs.

Made specifically for carpet

The curved sides and dimpled surfaces help create better traction

Not as versatile as other models as it is made specifically for carpet

For homes, apartments, or hotel rooms that are carpeted, these hard plastic polymer discs, which are the second largest on the list at 8.9 inches in diameter, are the way to go. They easily skim across textured surfaces without snagging, so all of your attention can be focused on shoring up your core.

The curved and slightly raised sides, along with the tiny lugs along the surface, help keep your foot on the slider. The sliders only come in one color—vibrant purple.

Key Specs: Size: 8.9-inch diameter | Material: Hard plastic polymer | Made for: Carpet

What to Look for When Buying Exercise Sliders

  • Material: The surface you’ll be sliding on is key. Hardwood floors? Carpet? Grass? It all needs to be taken into consideration. Ones with a sturdy plastic side will work on textured surfaces while a foam side slides better (and is way less abrasive) on harder surfaces.
  • Comfort: No matter which slider you choose, you want it to feel comfy. That could mean being stiffer or a little more malleable or having extra foam padding for a more cushy experience. Choose sliders with raised nubs to boost your grip, or opt for traditional, smooth sliders if the uneven surface is a distraction. It’s the little details that will make or break your slider experience.
  • Size: Typically these rounded discs measure about 7 inches in diameter. Size begins to vary when the shape (think oval, triangle, or hexagonal) changes. No matter which size you choose, just make sure your hands and feet fit comfortably on the disc.

Exercise discs can be great fitness accessories for a full-body workout. Using exercise sliders is pretty simple—though performing exercises with them is challenging . Simply lay them down on the desired surface, place a hand or foot on each slider (or just one if doing unilateral exercises), and then move them around to perform your chosen exercise.

You can use them for basic moves like lateral lunges and reverse lunges to more advanced exercises like atomic push-ups, single-leg mountain climbers, single-leg hamstring curls, and more.

Whether you like exercising at home , at the gym , or on the go, one handy tool can help take your workout to the next level: workout sliders. Also referred to as exercise gliders, ab sliders, exercise disc sliders, or strength slides, these pieces of equipment are small, making them easy to take when you travel, and, the best part, they're relatively affordable. If you're curious about exercise sliders and want to try them, fitness experts say these are the best ones worth your dollars.

Read on for details, plus answers to all your pressing slider questions, including whether they are worth it and ways to incorporate them into your workouts.

7 best workout sliders, according to fitness pros

Best overall workout sliders:.

sky trek exercise glider

With thousands of positive reviews, ACE-certified personal trainer Stephanie Thomas says these easy-to-use core sliders are a great overall option and the ones she most frequently recommends to her clients.

Best workout sliders for beginners:

sky trek exercise glider

“I like how these sliders are larger and can fit your entire foot,” Thomas says. “This will make it easier for beginners to find balance while using the sliders.” Plus, these exercise sliders are made of an impact-resistant thermoplastic resin that makes them ideal for use on any surface, including carpet and hardwood floors.

sky trek exercise glider

“The original Valslide is my favorite slider,” says celebrity certified personal trainer Eric Johnson . “This version took a furniture moving instrument and glorified it for the fitness heavens.” Bonus: They come in classic green, ninja black, and hottie pink to match whatever style.

Best advanced workout sliders:

sky trek exercise glider

If this isn’t your first rodeo with exercise gliders and you want to take it up a notch, Johnson recommends these. “I like the versatility of this slider because it has a larger surface area and can connect together,” he says of their hexagonal shape and clip-together function. They can be used with hands or feet and work on most surfaces.

sky trek exercise glider

These gliding core discs are on the smaller side, which is why Thomas thinks they’re great for people already comfortable using sliders. The smaller size also makes them even more portable and easy to pack for workouts on the go.

Best budget workout sliders:

sky trek exercise glider

For less than $10 bucks on Amazon, you can’t beat these workout sliders. Thomas recommends these for folks who want to dip their toes into doing slider exercises without spending a lot of money. Their dual-sided design makes them versatile. The fabric side can be used on hard and smooth surfaces, while the plastic side is best on soft surfaces like carpets.

Best sliders for multiple surfaces:

sky trek exercise glider

While most exercise gliders can be used on various surfaces, Thomas likes these for this purpose, thanks to their double-sided design. The smooth plastic side works on carpets or atop a blanket, while the foam side works on hard floors, wood floors, or tiles.

Workout slider FAQs

Are exercise sliders worth it.

The short answer: Yes! Here's why: "Sliders allow one to perform advanced progressions of certain exercises by increasing levers but still have an added stability component since you are maintaining contact with the floor," Johnson says. Thomas adds that sliders are also low-impact , making them a good option for people with joint issues or injuries.

{{post.sponsorText}}

As for what results you can expect from using workout sliders, Thomas says you can look forward to increased core strength. "Sliders activate the core muscles, making them amazing for building core strength and stability," she explains. "Just try regular mountain climbers versus slider mountain climbers, and you'll quickly see the difference." Since using sliders also requires balance, you may also notice your balance improves overall.

And, because mixing things up when it comes to working out can keep things interesting, Thomas points out that versatility is another pro of using exercise sliders. They can be used for many exercises and incorporated into a variety workouts, including core, leg, and cardio exercises.

In particular, Johnson likes using exercise sliders for stability ball leg curls or planks because if they become easier, you can challenge yourself to do more difficult progressions by including the sliders. Thomas also recommends incorporating them when doing mountain climbers, plank jacks, slider lunges, hamstring curls, pikes, push-ups, and burpees. There's one caveat, though: "Start slow and add one or two of these workouts to your workout," she advises.

What are the best exercise sliders?

When shopping for exercise sliders, there are some guidelines to remember. For starters, Thomas recommends examining for quality. "Look for sliders made of durable materials that can withstand heavy use," she says. After all, getting the most bang for your buck is ideal, so you want sliders meant to last.

In addition to the quality of the sliders, ensure they'll be a fit for what you need them for. Thomas says that includes choosing the correct size for your hands and feet. Pro tip: They're not the right fit if you have difficulty fitting your feet in the slider. And if you plan on taking your exercise gliders on the go, such as to the gym or for traveling, Thomas says portability is another important aspect to consider.

And lastly, Thomas recommends opting for exercise gliders that are compatible with the surface you'll be using them on, whether carpet or hardwood floors. This will help prevent injury and provide a stable workout.

What can I use instead of sliders for a workout?

While waiting for your sliders to arrive in the mail, Johnson says you can also use a TRX (suspension strap system) or a glute ham roller instead of sliders. Thomas recommends using towels or paper plates as substitutes as well.

Do sliders work on gym floors?

"Sliders can work on the gym floor, but they may not glide as smoothly on rubber or carpeted floors," Thomas notes due to the friction. However, not all gym floors are the same, so she advises testing them out on the surface of your go-to gym. "There should be an area of your gym that has a surface that will work with the sliders."

And in general, whether you're working out at the gym, at home, or on the go, Johnson says sliders generally work best on a smooth surface like turf, a slide board, tile, or wood.

How to use workout sliders to get a full-body, low-impact workout

Sliders can help you activate your core and they take up little space in your home gym.

sky trek exercise glider

There's no shortage of innovative , useful and just plain cool fitness equipment out there. The truth is, you don't need much of it to get a great workout. Case in point: all you need is your body and a bit of space to move around to get your heart rate up, blow off some steam and build strength . But if you're considering buying a few select pieces of equipment that can go a long way when it comes to usefulness and not take up a bunch of space, let me introduce you to the workout slider.

Workout sliders (sometimes called gliders) are flat, round discs that are designed to slide on a surface while you step or place your hands on them. According to Lucy Sexton, fitness trainer and co-founder of Bonded By The Burn , they can help you isolate the core during workouts, and are great for using during low-impact workouts.

"Gliders create instability, which in turn forces your muscles, particularly your core, to work that much harder to stabilize you. This added element is a great way to level up and diversify your core work and strength/cardio workouts," Sexton says.

Gliders or sliders are lightweight, portable and compact, making them perfect for small spaces or travel (when that's a thing again). They're also pretty inexpensive, which is another win if you are strapped for space and cash. Keep reading below to find out what to look for when you're shopping for workout sliders and how to get the most out of them in your workout routine.

What to look for when shopping for fitness sliders

sliders-target

Sliders are great home workout tools because they don't take up much space.

I've used several sets of fitness sliders and can say firsthand that it takes trial and error to figure out what works best for you. Some sliders will have two different sides (a plastic side and a fabric side), which is convenient if you don't always work out in the same space. When you shop for sliders, you'll need to keep in mind what type of floor you'll be using them on. Do you workout in a carpeted room? Then you'll need a specific type of slider for that. The same goes for tile or wood floors.

"The key is finding a glider that glides smoothly on your surface so that your movement is uninterrupted. If your glider ever feels jerky or sticky, that's a bad sign and you probably don't have the best glider for your surface. Every glider will work differently on different surfaces," Sexton says.

The best fitness sliders for carpet floors

If you're working out in a carpeted room, according to Sexton the best type of slider to use is a plastic one. You don't want a fabric slider or other material that can keep the slider from moving smoothly across the floor.

Synergy Core Sliders

This slider set from Synergy costs under $10 and includes a plastic side that works on carpets and a foam side that you can flip over and use to slide across wood or tile floors.

The best fitness sliders for wood or tile floors

If you work out on a hard surface, like tile or wood, you should use a slider that gives you a bit of grip but still slides. Look for ones made of felt, foam or fabric.

SKLZ Slidez Dual-Sided Exercise Glider Discs

Sexton recommends this dual-sided glider for hard wood or tile floors. If you're worried about potentially marking up your floors while using sliders, this set from Sklz is low-friction, which can help prevent marks.

The smoothest fitness sliders

Core Prodigy Ab Rolling Sliders with Wheels

For a glider with the all-around best experience, Sexton likes sliders with wheels attached.

"Gliders with wheels will always deliver the smoothest, most uninterrupted movement. Given that the wheel removes the friction between the surface and the slider, gliders with wheels are also the ultimate challenge."

How to use sliders in your workouts

You can use fitness sliders in a ton of different workouts and classes, but if you want to make the most of your time with them, Sexton recommends focusing on workouts with compound moves to get the most bang for your buck. "I always recommend compound movements, in other words, exercises that work multiple muscle groups at the same time. The more full-body the exercise, the more you can maximize your time and get your heart rate up," she says.

Sexton shares three workout moves to use with workout sliders and instructions on how to do them.

Criss-cross spider crawl

  • Set up with two sliders, one for each foot.
  • Start in a plank, with each foot on separate sliders.
  • Cross your right leg in front of your left, space out your feet, drop your heels onto the sliders, squeeze your inner thighs and pull your tailbone back and down.
  • Keeping your left leg straight, bend and pull your right knee in toward your left elbow. Press your right leg back to return to the starting position.
  • Repeat on the other side.

Side plank bear

  • Start in a plank position, stack your feet on one slider, right foot down, left foot on top.
  • Keeping the outer edge of your right foot down and your hips in line with your shoulders, slowly bend and pull your knees below your hips, then slowly press your legs back to the starting position.

Running man

  • Set up with one glider.
  • Start in a plank position. Keep your left foot on the slider and hug your right thigh in toward your chest.
  • Keeping your hips in line with your shoulders, slowly bend and pull your left knee below your hip as you extend your right leg back. Slowly press your left leg back as you bend and pull your right thigh in toward your chest to return to the starting position.

Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 Review: You Get What You Pay For

By Amanda Capritto, CPT, CES, CNC, CF-L1, CSNC

updated June 20, 2023

We test and review fitness products based on an independent, multi-point methodology. If you use our links to purchase something, we may earn a commission. Read our disclosures.

The saying “you get what you pay for” has never rung truer than when I’m testing cardio equipment like rowing machines or fitness tools like massage guns. I don’t know about you, but I get quite annoyed when something expensive proves to be much better than the cheaper alternative—but then find myself glad I decided to “buy once, cry once.”

In this Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 review, you’ll learn a lot about this ultra-affordable rowing machine and a lot about why, sometimes, forking out more cash is the better idea.

Serving Up The Truth Since 2014

It’s always been GGR’s mission to provide honest, real reviews on fitness products. That’s been a founding principle since the day Coop started this platform and it remains true now that GGR has a team of certified fitness professionals testing equipment and writing reviews. While we believe most products have their place, we also believe it’s our duty to make sure your money is well-spent.

Stamina Body Trac Glider 1050

Stamina Body Trac Glider 1050 Rowing Machine

Full-motion arms on the Stamina BodyTrac Glider simulate the feel of rowing on actual water. The unique design allows for a full-body, effective workout for every major muscle group - including back, legs, arms, abs and glutes. Rowing is also widely known to aid in improving cardiovascular health and burning calories.Stay focused during exercise with an easy-to-read LCD monitor and see your workout time, stroke count, calories burned and total strokes accumulated. When you want to increase or decrease the intensity of your stroke, simply adjust the hydraulic cylinder.Comfort for Lasting ResultsFor extra support and stability, the BodyTrac Glider moves along a smooth ball-bearing roller system and includes features to enhance your comfort, including textured foot plates with straps, a molded seat and padded hand grips. Fold the arms after you've completed your workout for an easy way to save space.

  • A Quick Look At The Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050

The Stamina Body Trac Glider 1050 rowing machine is a hydraulic rower, which is the only type of rowing machine we typically don’t recommend. There are air rowing machines, like the Concept2 RowErg, our top pick for the best rowing machine overall; there are also magnetic rowing machines and water rowing machines.

Caroline using Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050

Hydraulic rowers don’t make any of our guides to the best rowing machines because they simply aren’t as versatile or as durable as any of the other three types. If the name didn’t make it clear, this type of rowing machine uses hydraulics to create resistance. Specifically, there are pistons attached to handles, and when the exerciser pulls on the handles, the air or fluid inside of the pistons provides resistance.

Many people gravitate towards hydraulic rowing machines like the Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 due to the low price point. At less than $200, the BodyTrac Glider does seem like a good deal. But is it really?

  • Hydraulic rowing machines aren’t designed for heavy use, so if you plan to row frequently, check out other options, such as magnetic rowing machines.
  • This rowing machine won’t work for very tall people. Something with a longer monorail, such as the Concept2 RowErg (Model D Rower), is a better choice.
  • Hydraulic rowing machines require more maintenance than other types of rowers, so be prepared for that.
  • Costs less than $200
  • Takes up very little space
  • Folds up even smaller for easy storage
  • Wide, padded seat
  • Easy to move, only weighs 38 lbs
  • Feels more like rowing on real water than magnetic and air rowing machines
  • Expert assembly available for an extra fee
  • Financing available with an Amazon credit card, Amazon Prime account, or through Affirm
  • Ships free with Amazon Prime
  • 2-year protection plan available for an extra fee
  • Slide rail is too short for people over 5’8” to get full hip extension
  • Hydraulic pistons require regular maintenance
  • Monitor is tiny and doesn’t display much information
  • Foam grip on handles will likely tear
  • Foot plates are way too small for most people
  • Resistance levels aren’t challenging for conditioned people
  • Paltry warranty
  • Is The Stamina BodyTrac Glider Worth It?

I’m usually inclined to say that budget-friendly pieces of fitness equipment are good for someone, somewhere.

In the case of the BodyTrac Glider, though, it’s tough to recommend when there are many other rowing machines available for similar price points that will probably last much longer and provide a much better workout experience.

overhead view Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050

For example, for about $100 more, you could get the Sunny Health and Fitness SF-RW5801 rowing machine , which our roster of product testers liked so much it made our guide to the best budget rowing machines.

Still, the BodyTrac Glider 1050 has overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon, so it’s still safe to say that there is indeed a target market for it.

  • People looking to spend less than $200
  • Exercisers who don’t row very frequently, or for very long during a single session
  • Anyone who seriously needs to maximize space

Not recommended for:

  • Conditioned, experienced exercisers looking for a challenging workout
  • People who have a little more wiggle room in their budget
  • Anyone who cares about rowing stats like stroke rate and 500-m split time

  • Workout Experience

Two Garage Gym Reviews staff members tested the Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 in our Springfield, Missouri, equipment testing facility.

Here’s what Garage Gym Reviews staff writer Caroline Lubinsky had to say:

Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 Caroline using

“The Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 is an interesting machine. The footprint is comically small, and the foot pedals are some of the most janky I’ve ever tried. They flop around like a fish out of water when you try to put your feet on them to use the machine. However, I actually liked the rowing motion the 1050 provided, because it emulated rowing on water. Unfortunately, since the slide rail is so short, I wasn’t able to get a full leg extension, which was disappointing.”

GGR editor Nicole Davis agrees that the hydraulic piston mechanism better mimics rowing on a boat, which is typically unique to water rowing machines .

However, according to Nicole, there’s no easy way to change the manually adjustable resistance: Since the piston is basically underneath the seat, you may find yourself stopping in the middle of your workout to change the resistance.

Also, the highest resistance setting wasn’t challenging for Nicole, and she believes more conditioned people will find it even easier. The takeaway here is that the Stamina Body Trac Glider may be a decent option for beginners, but we wouldn’t recommend it for experienced fitness enthusiasts.

RELATED: How to Use a Rowing Machine

  • The Ergonomics

Overall, this is not a machine for taller or bigger-bodied people. This is for two reasons: The foot cradles are crazy small, and the slide rail is rather short.

GGR editor Nicole wears a women’s size 7.5 shoe, and the footplates were fine for her. However, Caroline, who wears a women’s size 9 shoe, did not find the foot rests adequate in size. Her feet were hanging off of the top of the foot rests, and she constantly had to adjust the foot straps, making for a frustrating workout experience.

Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 in use over the shoulder view

The monorail that supports the seat is only about 3 feet in length, meaning if you’re taller than 5 feet, 8 inches or have an inseam longer than about 28 inches, you may not be able to achieve full range of motion, specifically hip extension, (which is crucial to good rowing technique) on this machine.

On the upside, the molded seat is comfortable, as are the foam hand grips. The rowing arms are easy to grab, although people with longer arms may not ever reach full elbow extension.

  • Footprint and Portability

If the Stamina BodyTrac Glider shines anywhere, it’s footprint and portability. The machine is extremely compact and foldable, plus “easy to hop on and go,” as Nicole noted after testing it.

It’s only about 58 inches long during use, and it folds up to be even smaller for storage. When folded, the BodyTrac Glider measures just 42.25 inches in height and less than 20 inches in width. If you’re working with a very tight space, this rowing machine could be a good option for you.

While the BodyTrac Glider doesn’t have any transport wheels, it weighs just 38 pounds, so it’s easy for one person to move. Even someone new to fitness should be able to pick it up, or at least drag it, considering it weighs the same as a small child.

  • Durability and Construction

Neither of our product testers were impressed with the durability of the Stamina Body Trac Glider. The velcro straps on the footplates are very thin, Nicole noted, and it “feels cheaply made overall with questionable welding [and] quite a bit of plastic.”

Specifically, there are plastic bushings that connect the main frame to the pivot point that seem suspect, Nicole says. Some customer reviews do mention that these bushings have failed.

The aluminum center beam on the slide rail seems durable enough, but it only supports 250 pounds, which isn’t up to par with the 300-pound standard that’s generally considered the minimum acceptable for rowing machines. Steel frames are generally more durable.

This rower also features a ball-bearing roller system, which is good for a smooth ride, but will require maintenance (like oiling) over time.

Don’t expect any sweet high-tech features from the Stamina BodyTrac Glider. It’s as bare-bones as they come, with a simple LCD monitor that only tracks workout time, stroke count, calories burned, and total strokes accumulated.

This is to say: The BodyTrac Glider is not a good choice for people who are serious about rowing for exercise and want to know stats like 500-meter split time and strokes per minute.

One tech-y feature worth calling out is that this product is supported by müüv , a smart audio coaching app. The app provides a follow-along assembly video, personalized workouts tailored to the equipment you own, and a music listening experience from iHeartRadio. Nicole notes that there is no phone holder, though, so this will be hard to utilize effectively.

  • Customer Experience

Your customer experience will vary depending on where you buy your rowing machine. If you buy it on Amazon, which we recommend, you’re eligible for Stamina’s one-year warranty on the frame and 90-day parts warranty. Buying on Amazon also means your purchase can be returned for free. Amazon also offers various financing options and purchase protection, plus the option for expert assembly for an additional fee.

  • Ordering and Assembling the Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050

Although Amazon offers expert assembly, you probably won’t need it. The Stamina BodyTrac Glider is a small, lightweight machine that takes just about a half-hour to assemble with one person. Having a second person could be helpful if you are unfamiliar with assembling fitness equipment. But, according to our GGR Operations Manager Sam Presley, this rowing machine has a simple bolt-together design.

  • Customer Reviews

Although our team of product testers wasn’t impressed with the Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050, it seems that most buyers are. This rowing machine has overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon and, at the time of writing, has an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars with more than 5,000 reviews.

Customers praise the machine for its budget-friendly price and ease of use. Critical reviews mention that the pistons lose resistance after about 10 minutes of rowing, and that maintenance is a pain. Overall, it seems that most buyers are enjoying their Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050, and some think it could have minor improvements.

  • Final Verdict of Our Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 Review

In the words of our product tester and GGR editor Nicole, “For $160, you get what you pay for.”

“Despite the seemingly subpar specs,” she continues, “it has overwhelmingly good reviews. And a good portion of reviewers did say their rower lasted for years, so there’s that.”

Still, she noticed that a lot of people modify their machine in some way, such as elongating the foot cradles and replacing the straps, to make it more user-friendly.

I’m in my 60s and had never done this activity before, nor anything like it. I enjoyed the whole experience. If you’re nervous about jumping off a cliff, there’s no need to be. I started to run, the wind picked us up and we were off. Additionally, it was a slope, not a cliff. The pilots will give you as gentle or as rocky ride as you like.

I thought the price was a bit steep, especially for the photos. However, I have no regrets about either doing the jump or about buying the photos.

Welcome to Sky Sailing™

Prepare yourself for the greatest adventure.

For thousands of years humanity dreamt of flying, looking to the skies to find an answer. History shows us the long road from those first dreams to the wonder that is modern flight. The first tested and perfected flights were made in crafts designed to glide on the air currents, like a bird. The exhilarating feeling, and amazing views offered by Soaring over the ground, are a wonder we can now appreciate.

As Southern California's Premier Sailplane destination, Sky Sailing offers rides of one or two passengers, instruction in the art of Soaring, and a place for the Glider community to meet and practice their sport. Soaring is the flight of a sailplane or glider, by using the energy produced by gliding along on the air-currents, much like a powered airplane. Learning to soar in a sailplane is the best way to begin to learn to fly.

A Great Gift Idea

Come soar with southern california's hawks and eagles, general soaring information, soaring is freedom., learning to fly, flight tickets, reservations, other products.
