About Rotorua

Rotorua is situated in the Bay of Plenty Region, in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island. It is just 60 kilometres south of Tauranga, 80 kilometres north of Taupo, 105 kilometres east of Hamilton, and 230 kilometres southeast of New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland.

The Rotorua District has a total estimated population of 68,900 (2011, Statistics New Zealand).

Rotorua is a major destination for both domestic and international tourists; the tourism industry is by far the largest industry in the district. It is known for its geothermal activity, and features geysers – notably the Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa – and hot mud pools. This thermal activity is sourced to the Rotorua caldera, on which the town lies.

Geothermal Areas

Thermal activity is at the heart of much of Rotorua’s tourist appeal. Geysers and bubbling mud pools, hot thermal springs and the Buried Village (Te Wairoa) —so named after it was buried by the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption— are within easy reach of Rotorua.

In Kuirau Park , to the west end of Rotorua, hot bubbling mud pools dot the park. Visitors can soak their feet in hot pools.

The Rotorua region has 18 sparkling lakes, known collectively as the Lakes of Rotorua. Fishing, waterskiing, swimming and other water activities are popular in summer.

Other Activities

One of Rotorua’s main attractions is mountain biking. Whakarewarewa Forest has been described as ‘the Disneyland of mountain biking’ and includes mountain bike trails, where the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships were held in August 2006.

Rotorua is also home to botanical gardens and historic architecture. Known as a spa town and major tourist resort since the 1800s, many of its buildings hint at this history. Government Gardens , close to the lakeshore at the eastern end of the town, are a particular point of pride.

Rotorua Climate

The Rotorua region has a relatively high altitude (290m/950ft) and enjoys a warm, temperate climate.

The warmest months are January, February and March, where the average temperature can reach 27°C (78°F), dropping to an average of 11.7°C overnight. The coolest months are June, July and August, where the minimum temperature ranges between 9°C-13°C (50°F-55°F), dropping to an average of 3.3°C overnight.

• Summer (Dec – Feb): Daytime 21°C – 29°C
• Autumn (Mar – May): Daytime 15°C – 26°C
• Winter (Jun – Aug): Daytime 9°C – 16°C
• Spring (Sep – Nov): Daytime 13°C– 21°C

Rotorua has an annual average of 2117 sunshine hours and an average annual rainfall of 1400mm. Rainfall is spread out throughout the year, with the winter months receiving slightly more.

Rotorua is situated inland from the coast and is sheltered by high country to the south and east, resulting in less wind than many other places in New Zealand.

When combined with a varied landscape of forests, mountains, geothermal activity, rivers and lakes, the mild climate of Rotorua makes the region a top travel destination throughout the year.

It’s also a big trout fishing area with fishing on the lakes and tributary rivers. 

For thrill seekers, Rotorua is home to the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world, and offers everything from bungy jumping and luging to zorbing and ziplining.

Families with children of all ages will love the great range of leisure and wildlife parks . When it comes to food and drink, Rotorua boasts a thermally-heated central city alfresco dining zone known as Eat Streat, as well as a number of popular food and craft markets.

Only 5% of Kiwi hatched in the wild survive to adulthood. To help protect these birds, the National Kiwi Hatchery (opens in new window) hatches around 120 chicks a year, which are raised into young adulthood before being released into the wild. The centre welcomes visitors for a small admission fee that includes an excellent backstage tour to see the hatchery and egg incubator. All proceeds from ticket sales go to the National Kiwi Recovery Trust.

Located in the heart of the North Island, Rotorua is also the gateway to other central destinations - it's less than two hours to the Mt Ruapehu ski fields and less than an hour from the nearest beach towns.

Geothermal Rotorua in New Zealand is a wonderland. I could spend all my holidays in this region! There is so much to choose from: fumaroles, mud pools, ponds with crazy colors, geysers, terraces… Below is my guide to help you choose the best geothermal parks in Rotorua for you to visit, depending on your interests.

The Rotorua Geothermal Parks – options

Geothermal rotorua – intro.

Rotorua is often the name used to refer to the whole geothermal area because it is home to some of the most famous parks. However it is part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone that extends from White Island to Mt Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park, South of Taupo. Rotorua is considered the birthplace of New Zealand’s Tourism because one of the main geothermal features used to be the magnificent Pink and White terraces. Sadly there were destroyed by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in the late 19th century.

But with such an active volcanic zone, there is still plenty to see! A region not to be missed on your NZ itinerary . Geothermal features in the region include volcanic cones, mud pools, fumaroles, geysers, Sinter terraces, colorful ponds, explosion craters… With a great variety of colors and surrounded by dense vegetation!

The choice of geothermal parks in Rotorua

With all that volcanic activity, the region between Rotorua and Taupo is home to many geothermal parks. And they are all very different from one another. So if you love geothermal features as much as I do, I recommend to spend 3 days in the area and visit all of them! (I did 2 days in Rotorua as I was driving South and 1 day in Taupo as I was driving back North). You can see my volcanic wonders itinerary suggestion . But if you are limited in time, I am showing you in this article the different features and interest of each so that you can choose the ones that fit your preferences.

#1 – Orakei Korako Geothermal Attraction – “The Hidden Valley”

For me there is no question. Orakei Korako is my absolute favorite geothermal park in the Rotorua – Taupo region!

#2 – Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland

Wai-O-Tapu is the most famous of the Rotorua volcanic Parks mostly because of the Champagne pool

• Rotorua to Wai-O-Tapu – 30min
• Taupo to Wai-O-Tapu – 40min
• Price – 32,50 NZD
• Access – Opening hours – Summer 8:30 am to 6pm / Winter 8:30 am to 5pm Easy road, close to the main one Large carpark + carpark for Lady Knox geyser (4min drive from visitor center) (no cash accepted on site) Café and toilets at the visitor center
• Getting around – Plan 1h30 if you are doing the 3 loops The First loop is easy and offers the best features – 30min But you can keep going and combine with loop 2 and 3 all the way to the lake Well maintained paths See my article on Wai-O-Tapu
• Main features – Of course, the Champagne pool with the orange deposit at the border of the crust The Devil’s bath with neon-green color The Artist’s palette with the main stains of colors The Lady Knox Geyser

With your Wai-O-Tapu ticket, you can also see the lady Knox Geyser erupting. The eruptions are triggered everyday at 10:15am. Don’t be late!

#3 – Waimangu volcanic valley

Waimangu was a pleasant surprise. For those looking for an enjoyable hike in Nature with well explained geothermal features along the way, this is a great option

• Rotorua to Waimangu – 25min 
• Taupo to Waimangu – 45min
• Price – 42 NZD (for walk and bus) – more if you wan to cruise Lake Rotomahana at the end
• Access – Opening hours – 8:30 am to 5pm (6pm in January) – Last admission times depend on what you plan to do Easy drive  and large carpark Café and toilets at the entrance
• Getting around – Plan half a day There are 3 legs of the walk you can do and buses picking you up between them if you want to do only part of it The beginning of the walk is a very steep path down. If you have knee problems, I recommend using walking poles. After it is generally flat, except to go see the Inferno crater Well maintained paths
• Main features – The valley with no buildings around – it really is like going for a hike The inferno crater with its depth variations The smaller lakes at the beginning The small streams with mini-geysers and incredible colors The Rotomahana lake where used to be the Pink and White terraces

#4 – Te Puia

Te Puia’s main Geothermal attraction is the Pohutu geyser. But you can also enjoy a kiwi bird house, a Maori show and a lot of Maori arts

• Rotorua to Te Puia – 5min
• Taupo to Te Puia –  1h
• Price – 56 NZD without the show
• Access – Opening hours – 8am to 5pm Very large carpark (do not enter at the carpark of the big entrance, this is only for tours being dropped here. You have to drive to the round about to park there (large carpar)) – it adds 5 to 10min to walk to the entrance Café and toilets at the entrance
• Getting around – Plan half a day (or just 1h if you just go for the geyser) Access to the geyser, the show and the performance is really easy If you complete the whole walking loop there are slopes and stairs (but you are away from the crowds) Well maintained paths
• Main features – The Pohutu geyser is the largest geyser in the southern hemisphere – It erupts once or twice each hour. The blow can reach 30m in height. The kiwi bird house (great if you don’t have time to visit an ecosanctuary  Te Puia also offers Maori experience and is home to a lot of Maori art
• Or you can book a ticket combined with an evening performance and a geothermal dinner – check out program and book

#5 – Whakarewarewa

Whakarewarewa is very close to Rotorua. It is famous for its living Maori village. This is a great place to combine Maori culture and geothermal activity.

• Rotorua to Whakarewarewa – 5min
• Taupo to Whakarewarewa – 1h
• Price – 45 NZD (entry + show) – but you can also get  geothermal lunch
• Access – Opening hours – 8h30 am to 5pm You can call it Whaka and people will understand 🙂 – the real name is actually: Te Whakarewarewatangaoteopetauaawahiao In town, carpark can fill up quickly Café and toilets in the village
• Getting around – Plan 1h to half a day Easy to walk around the villages and the lake. The rest of the walking loop has some slopes to viewpoints (note that the map and indications are not so good – I was not the only one to have difficulty finding where to go once outside the village and main path) Well maintained paths
• Main features – The most fascinating part is the lake Te Roto A Tamaheke with the bridge going through it. You can see many holes with the crust and transparent water I enjoyed the color of the Green Lake (Roto Kanapanapa) You can also see from the distance the Pohutu Geyser that is in Te Puia Plus you can enjoy the Maori living village and their show

Difference – Whakarewarewa or Te Puia?

Note that things can get confusing between Whakarewarewa and Te Puia because:

• You can see the Pohutu geyser in the distance from Whakarewarewa, but it is actually in Te Puia Park, 
• And Te Puia is located in the Whakarewarewa Valley

So they play with those and confuse you to try to get the most visitors (both of them in my opinion). Those are 2 different parks. I think they both deserve a visit:

•  I enjoyed better the Maori experience in Whaka because it was smaller and less of a big spectacle
• but getting close to the geyser in Te Puia was great!(I know, sorry, I am not helping you reduce the number of parks you want to visit…)

#6 – Craters of the Moon Thermal Walkway (Taupo Geothermal Park)

If you are looking for something completely different to add variety to your geothermal experiences, head to the Craters of the Moon.

• Rotorua to Craters of the moon – 1h
• Taupo to Craters of the moon – 10min
• Price – 8 NZD
• Access – Opening hours – 8:30am to 5pm (Winter ) and 6pm (Summer) ​Easy drive, large carpark Snacks and toilets at the entrance
• Getting around – Plan 1h 45min loop walk + 20min if your walk up to the viewpoint (slope up and stairs down) Well Maintained paths
• Main features – I really enjoyed the loop to see the many craters smoking. However I was disappointed by the view at the top

Other geothermal attractions in Rotorua

Free geothermal parks in rotorua.

There are no free parks, but there are a few areas where you can see the geothermal activity that are free to access especially around the Rotorua lake:

• Along Hatupatu Drive near Sulphur point – 38°08’05.4″S 176°15’47.8″E
• Kuirau Park (public park) with a small lake and mud pools – 38°08’01.9″S 176°14’41.7″E
• You can also enjoy some hikes on volcanoes 

Geothermal Spas

It is not my thing but Rotorua is home to famous spas using the geothermal activities around. For example:

• The Polynesian Spa right by the lake: mineral hot pools, cold plunge pools, heated recliners… – pre-book your experience
• Hell’s gate with mud baths and other spa experience – pre-book in your own currency
• Or near Taupo the Warakei terraces & thermal health spa – note that the terraces are were not made by nature

Smaller geothermal walks

• Warakei geothermal walk – This is a small walk behind a cafe – path is small and taken over by nature. 10NZD 40min- small features to see (not to be mixed up with the Warakei terraces)
• Tokaanu thermal walk – 20min walk with hot pools and pud pools (South of Lake Taupo)

Flying over the volcanic region of Rotorua

Another great way to see the region is to fly over it – you can opt for an helicopter or a floatplane. I had never been on a float plane, so this is what I chose. The longer tour take you above the Mount Tarawera fault line (from the 1886 eruption) and you can also admire the lakes and valleys.

White Island

But the most famous volcano is white island because of how active it is. You can either fly over or take a boat from the coast to be able to walk around it.

Where to stay in Rotorua and Taupo

Should you stay in rotorua and taupo.

• Both cities have a lake
• They are both close to many volcanic attractions
• Rotorua has more attractions with many lakes, water activities, springs… But Taupo is closer to the hiking opportunities in Tongariro
• Rotorua is more of a living city while Taupo feels more like a holiday city (in my opinion)
• Rotorua often has bad smell because of all the volcanic activity

During my last trip, I stayed 2 days in Rotorua as I was driving down on my road trip and 1 night in Taupo as I was driving North.

Where to stay in Rotorua

In Rotorua I stayed in a room at a B&B (Rotorua City Homestay). They were very welcoming and I enjoyed the breakfast a lot – Check out more photos and availabilities

One of the most popular Rotorua activities is to dip in a hot pool. Between Taupo and Rotorua, make sure to stop off at one of the free hot pool spots. One example is the bridge leading to Wai-O-Tapu is a perfect spot where cool and hot streams meet, hence its name “ Hot ‘n Cold “, while Kerosene Creek is one of the most popular hot pools with its small waterfall cascading through the bush.

3. See Bubbling Mud and Soak Your Feet in Hot Baths at Kuirau Park – FREE

Here comes the most accessible Rotorua attraction! Kuirau Park gives visitors a taste (quite literally, the smell is so strong you can taste it) of the volcanic activity that Rotorua is famous for. 4. Check Out Rotorua Night Market – FREE

It’s like a market… but at night! Taking place every Thursday night on Tutanekai Street, stuff your face with delicious food and enjoy the evening entertainment. 5. Watch Rafters Plunge Down a Waterfall – FREE

Want more free activities in Rotorua? The short walk along the Kaituna River on the Okere Falls Track takes you to a viewpoint of the highest commercially rafted falls in New Zealand (and the world!) Wander through a geothermal valley packed with geysers, hot springs, vibrant lakes, steaming vents and fascinating history. Discover Waimangu’s network of walking trails, which range from 1 hour to 2 hours +, giving you great value for money at one of the most affordable geothermal parks in the Rotorua area . 7. See the Māori Village of Ohinemutu – FREE

The inner-city suburb of Ohinemutu in Rotorua is not only a living Māori village, but it used to be the centre of the Rotorua area in the early 1870s. Walk around the village and enjoy sights like the Tama-Te-Kapua Marae (Māori meeting house) and St Faith’s Anglican Church . 9. Roll Down a Hill in a Giant Inflatable Ball – CHEAP

A fun and unique activity in Rotorua, Zorb is an insane ride in a giant inflatable hamster ball! Superman-dive into the ball’s opening, and then you’re zipped into the hollow inside with a shallow layer of water to make the experience smooth and slippery. There are four tracks down the hill to choose from. Each ride costs approximately NZ$40.

10. Experience the Geothermal Mineral Waters of the Polynesian Spa – CHEAP

One of the easiest hot pool complexes to access in Rotorua, Polynesian Spa not only win points for not costing too much to get to but is one of the most upmarket hot pools available in the area. Those on a budget can choose the main pools complex for around NZ$40 where you can soak in a range of acidic and alkaline spring water pools with gorgeous Lake Rotorua views. 11. Visit Hamurana Spring – CHEAP

Next on our list of cheap things to do in Rotorua is Hamurana Springs . A cool natural feature of the area is this crystal-clear spring. Take a 15-minute walk to get to the springs with decking viewpoints looking over the springs. Admission is around NZ$20 per adult, but you can sometimes find cheaper deals online or on the day.

Location: State Highway 36, Hamurana (near the golf course), approximately 17 km (10.5 mi) north of Rotorua city centre.

12. Relax in the Waikite Valley Thermal Pools – CHEAP

A whole host of thermal pools using natural thermal water await at the Waikite Valley Thermal Pools , as well as a bushwalk to the source of the hot water spring itself. These hot pools are among some of the cheapest in the Rotorua area, at around NZ$20. On the downside, it’s a 30-minute drive out of town.

Location: 648 Waikite Valley Road, Waikite Valley, approximately 28 km (17 mi) from Rotorua city centre.

13. Enjoy a Stroll Alongside Lake Rotorua – FREE

Whatever you do, don’t feed the black swans! The lakefront is part of the Rotorua Walkway , which is a 28 km (17 mi) walk taking you to the most scenic and interesting sights around the city. A highlight is Sulphur Point , a geothermal landscape just behind the Government Gardens . Location: There are several access points to the Rotorua Walkway, as listed on this Rotorua Walkways Map . Otherwise, good places to start are along the lakefront at Sulphur Bay and the Government Gardens where you will find map boards along the walkway. There is also a map board on the east side of Kuirau Park.

14. Hike Maunga Kākaramea (Rainbow Mountain) – FREE

See two stunning vibrant lakes on the  15-minute Maunga Kākaramea Loop Walk – a must-do free pitstop on the way in or out of Rotorua. For a longer mission with some amazing views, continue on the Maunga Kākaramea Summit Track   with views overlooking the Rotorua countryside. See Mt Tarawera, Lake Tarawera, Lake Rotomahana and Lake Rerewhakaaitu, as well as mountain ranges.

Location: State Highway 5, approximately 26 km (16 mi) from Rotorua city centre.

15. See Native Birds of Prey at Wingspan – CHEAP

New Zealand has many unique bird species and one of the best places to see some of these rare birds is at Wingspan, the National Bird of Prey Centre . Visit the aviary of these birds in rehabilitation close up, such as the New Zealand falcon and the dwarf owl called a morepork or “ ruru” in Māori. Arrive at Wingspan at around 2 pm and you can even watch a New Zealand falcon flight display.

Hell's Gate

Home to New Zealand's most active geothermal attraction.  Hell’s Gate boasts the largest mud volcano and largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. As a historical site for geothermal bathing, this Māori owned valley is famous for its unique warm mud baths, sulphur pools and “health-giving” waters from the Tikitere Geothermal Reserve. Enjoy a guided or self-guided interactive geothermal walk before relaxing in the mud spa and slathering yourself with the mineral-rich mud. Then rinse off and soak in the sulphur spas. There’s even a cold plunge pool, if you dare.

Visit Hell's Gate

A long-time favourite.  Seeing the world-famous Pōhutu Geyser erupting is a sight you’ll never forget. Join one of the guided experiences where your hosts – some who are fifth generation guides – will share the history and stories of the valley, the geothermal features, and the Māori iwi who made this area their home 170 years ago. By day, you can also see our national bird in the state-of-the-art Kiwi Conservation Centre, and dine on the hāngī buffet at Pātaka Kai Restaurant overlooking Pōhutu. Upon dusk, and armed with a flashlight, you’ll enjoy a multi-sensory experience that makes the Geyser by Night tour truly remarkable. Waimangu Volcanic Valley

A must-do experience . Waimangu Volcanic Valley was created in 1886 when Mt Tarawera erupted, destroying everything in its wake and forming the seven craters that make up the valley today. A range of self-guided eco-tours allow you to see the park’s amazing geothermal features, thriving birdlife, and rare and unusual plants. Add on a Lake Rotomahana boat cruise to see the reserve’s volcanic activity from another perspective, or get even closer to the action with the Steaming Cliffs Kayak tour on the lake. Kuirau Park

A free thermal park in the city . In Rotorua, there’s no need to leave the city to check out some natural boiling, bubbling and steaming geothermal action. Kuirau Park is located within an easy walk from the city centre, just off Pukuatua and Ranolf streets, and perfect for families. Several walkways take you to see a crater lake, mud pools, hot springs, and a free thermal foot bath, all set in a beautifully manicured setting dotted with flower beds and native flora. Kuirau Park is also great place to play and picnic, with barbecues, picnic tables, children’s playground and toilets.

Polynesian Spa

An iconic lakefront spa complex . Polynesian Spa has 28 beautiful hot pools, 14 of which have spectacular views over Lake Rotorua. Four different thermal pool areas cater to various groups: the Family Spa, Adult Pools and Priest Spa, Private Pools, or the Lake Spa. Two types of mineral waters feed into the pools, each with their own therapeutic properties. Priest Spring’s higher acidity levels is perfect for soothing tired muscles, aches and pains, and the alkaline water from Rachael Spring leaves skin feeling silky due to the antiseptic action of sodium silica. Rainbow Mountain

Crater lakes, steam and 360-degree views.  Hiking to the top of Rainbow Mountain is another one for the must-do list. The well-marked trail takes you through a public reserve to the summit 743 meters above sea level. Along the way you’ll discover two colourful crater lakes, native bush that is still regenerating following the Mt Tarawera eruption, and bare, colourful steaming ridges. At the summit, 360-degree views reveal Mount Tarawera, three lakes, forests, ranges and even the volcanic peaks of Mount Tongariro to the south. The trail is roughly 2.5km one way and takes around two hours to reach the summit by foot.

Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave

One of only two geothermal caves known to exist in the world.  South of Rotorua and across the beautiful Waikato River between Rotorua and Taupō, you’ll discover Orakei Korako. Also known as The Hidden Valley, Orakei Korako is another geothermal wonderland. Upon arrival, take the short boat cruise across the narrow lake to explore a world of gushing geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pools, some of the largest and most amazing silica terraces in the world, and the geothermal Ruatapu Cave which descends 23 metres to a hot pool named Waiwhakaata, or Pool of Mirrors.

Lake Tarawera

History, natural beauty and hot water beach. One of the largest lakes in New Zealand, Lake Tarawera is known for water sports, sizeable rainbow trout, and one of the best places in the country for astro-photography from the end of the jetty. But it’s also home to the secluded geothermal lakeside at Te Rātā Bay and Hot Water Beach, a special location where a hot spring-fed stream trickles into the lake. Take a water taxi offered by Totally Tarawera, or a four to five-hour hike to this extraordinary spot where you can dig a hot sandy hole to soak in or build a rock wall to create your own steamy spa.

Waikite Valley Thermal Pools

Hot pools and geothermal eco-trail. Just off the beaten track and nestled in a serene rural valley, Waikite Valley Thermal Pools has been a popular hot spot for nearly 50 years. Upon arrival, you’ll see the series of clever manmade terracing created to cool the boiling water as it makes its way to several hot pools with various temperatures. Prior to enjoying a relaxing soak, follow the eco-trail to learn more about the area’s geothermal features and see Te Manaroa Spring, the largest single source of boiling water in New Zealand. Waikite Valley’s pools are filled with 100% pure, natural geothermal water.

Lake Rotoiti

Secluded lakeside hot pools.  Lake Rotoiti is a water-lover’s paradise for all your typical reasons. But the seven Manupirua Springs Hot Pools, located along the lake’s edge and surrounded by native bush, are accessible only by water or air, making it a special place to visit. On-water access and tours are offered by several operators: Katoa Lake Rotorua jet boat; Pure Cruise’s water taxi or 53-foot luxury catamaran; River Rats or Waimarino Adventures’ guided kayak tours; or your own watercraft. Alternatively, Volcanic Air offers a scenic and exciting roundtrip floatplane tour that starts on Lake Rotorua and makes a splash landing at the hot pools.
