Disc Golf Pro Tour Announces Unified 2024 European Tour

Disc Golf Stream to merge with Disc Golf Network

October 25, 2023: The Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT), the official Pro Tour of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), is thrilled to announce a new agreement with the European Pro Tour (EPT) to create a singular unified European tour called DGPT Europe. PDGA Europe, which has operated the PDGA Euro Tour, is in support of this new partnership.

Under the new agreement, the European Pro Tour has merged with the DGPT, and their leadership team will continue in leadership roles with DGPT Europe. Juha Kytö (former EPT CEO) has been named the DGPT Europe Media Director, and Mikko Wikman (former Tour Director for the EPT) will serve as a DGPT Europe Operations Manager. Additionally, Leiv Aspén (TD of the Krokhol Open), will also join DGPT Europe in a part-time capacity in operations management.

Central to this partnership is the merger of the European Pro Tour’s live streaming service, Disc Golf Stream, with the DGPT’s Disc Golf Network. Disc Golf Stream will undergo a subscriber migration with the Disc Golf Network this off-season, and DGN will host all 2024 live broadcasts.

The PDGA Euro Tour , which is the professional competition arm of PDGA Europe , will pause its independent PDGA Euro Tour Open Divisions series, opting instead to support DGPT Europe. This collaboration is intended to develop support similar to that provided by the Global and U.S. PDGA Operations and Logistics team for DGPT events in the United States. DGPT Europe looks forward to exploring how PDGA Europe could extend similar support to DGPT Europe events in their respective countries.

“We believe that this agreement is the right direction, and we will support it with our expertise for the integral growth of our beloved game in Europe,” said Antti Taronen, PDGA Europe Board of Directors President.

“We’re excited to continue to work with PDGA Europe in 2024 by expanding and supporting the great effort they have made to take professional disc golf to the next phase in Europe,” said Jeff Spring, DGPT CEO.

“This collaboration marks the beginning of a new era for professional disc golf in Europe,” continued Spring. “By pooling resources and expertise from several major players in the disc golf community, we aim to deliver an unmatched experience for fans and players alike as the European disc golf market continues to grow and develop. We’re thrilled to bring in the entrepreneurial passion and expertise of Juha, Mikko and Leiv to this new effort. They have helped launch the growth of professional disc golf across the continent and will help lead the continued evolution.”

“The DGPT and the European Pro Tour both originated with a singular vision: elevating professional disc golf. This unification signifies a shared dedication to that foundational goal,” said Juha Kytö, formerly the CEO of EPT and now transitioning to Director of Media for DGPT Europe. “As we unite under this shared goal, we’re also merging the vast array of talents and expertise that have been a part of the European Pro Tour, PDGA Euro Tour, and PDGA Majors in Europe. With Mikko Wikman concentrating solely on Operations, I’m thrilled to spearhead our media efforts. Collaborating closely with the seasoned team at Disc Golf Network, I’m eager to pool together European stakeholders to enhance and amplify our media offerings. Fans can anticipate not only a broader range of coverage but also a heightened quality.

The European Pro Tour was funded in part by Prodigy Europe, and their team contributed immensely to the development of the EPT since its inception. Prodigy and the DGPT have also struck a deal as part of this new agreement, and their leadership will continue to advise the DGPT in an effort to see the European market flourish. “ It has been a pleasure to work and plan with Lasse Paju, and we’re excited to have the leadership of him and his team to help guide this new venture, ” said Spring.

“I want to thank everyone involved over the last two seasons,” said Lasse Paju, CEO of Prodigy Disc Europe. “Working with such a committed team and outstanding partner network has been rewarding. We’re excited about this new collaboration. Together, I’m confident we’ll develop disc golf even faster in Europe.”

DGPT Europe Event Classes

Five European tournaments from previous stops on the European Pro Tour or PDGA Euro Tour will be included in the standard 2024 DGPT event class (100% points weight – sanctioned as PDGA Elite Series). Additional events will be sanctioned as PDGA A-tiers and will receive DGPT Europe Silver Event status (50% points weight).

While the DGPT recently announced that it had ended the use of the Silver Event designation for U.S. events, it will continue to sanction Silver Events in Europe to encourage growth and round out a European touring schedule.

“Having determined that it’s time to set aside Silver Events and shift our focus to developing a qualifying series in the U.S., we recognize that the European market still requires Silver Events to help grow and sustain a balanced Tour,” said Spring. “While we expect the European market also to reach a similar point in the future, Silver Events will continue to be a part of DGPT’s growth strategy as they provide additional competition opportunities between standard Tour stops and will allow DGPT Europe to develop more relationships with top-level courses and organizers.”

DGPT Europe is still in the process of scheduling 2024 Silver Events and is looking for additional bids. European events who would like to be considered for Silver status can submit their interest here . The dates and locations of DGPT Europe Silver Events will be released this off-season. DGPT Europe encourages bids from interested local organizing committees from Central and Southern Europe, where developmental efforts will be focused.

DGPT Europe Points System

For the 2024 season, the DGPT will maintain two points standings: a DGPT World Standings that awards spots in the 2024 DGPT Championship, and a standalone DGPT Europe points standings. DGPT Europe will not have a stand-alone Tour Championship in 2024, but will instead use its separate points standings to award bonus payouts and 2025 Tour Cards to top finishers.

  • The five DGPT Europe events included in the standard event class (100% points weight – sanctioned as PDGA Elite Series) will count points towards both the DGPT World Standings and the separate European points standings. These events will be covered LIVE on the Disc Golf Network.
  • DGPT Europe’s Silver Events (50% points weight – sanctioned as PDGA A-tiers) will only count points towards the stand-alone European points standings. These events will not receive live coverage on the Disc Golf Network.

2024 DGPT European Schedule (PDGA Elite Series)

Does not include DGPT Europe Silver events (TBA). Additionally, the PCS Open, a previous DGPT event in Norway, will take a year off Tour but is expected to return for future seasons.

Final 2024 DGPT points system information, including how many events will count in each event class, will be released after the 2024 European Silver events are announced.

Dominik and the State of Disc Golf in Germany

23 Apr, 2017

Written by: Dominik Stampfer

Hello Discmaniacs, hello Disc Golfers! I am Dominik from Germany and since 2012 part of Team Discmania. With this article I would like to tell you a bit more about myself and about disc golf in Germany.

So, who am I? Let´s go quickly through the basic information: I started playing in 2004 after my older brother was finally able to get me away from the soccer field. But it took a few years to take Disc Golf more serious. In 12 years of Disc Golf I had some great finishes on big tournaments in Germany and Europe including a National Open Title in 2014, 21st place at European Open 2015 and a 5th place at Copenhagen Open 2016. I also had the pleasure to attend in the USDGC 2015 and had a solid finish there.

But what kind of person am I on the disc golf course? Well, when I grew up, I was always told to stand up after failure and find my way through every situation. I took those characteristics with me to the disc golf course.

I would consider myself as a sportsman through and through and someone who’s always striving for his best performance. Of course it’s great to win titles, but that’s not the thing what I am driven from. I am driven from the improvement in my own game and from the challenge of beating myself. I mean that’s what Disc Golf is all about – beating yourself. This is by far my favorite aspect of the game. You are responsible for every single mistake, but at the same time the deciding point about winning or losing is you. And if you beat yourself and deliver the best performance you can… throphies and titles will come.

Ok, that's the person you will find on the course. But what is beside of disc golf? Well I am a non-professional disc golfer, but I am trying to take it as serious as possible. In fact, I consider it a free-time activity for me. In my daily life I am employed in a German company which provides healthcare products and solutions. I am doing a three years training program to earn a Bachelor of Arts. That means I am working and studying at the same time. Fitting enough disc golf practice into a busy schedule is not easy, but challenges me to do things more efficient. Even when I struggled balancing these things during this season it was a great learning experience.

Last year, I was working abroad in Hong Kong. Yes, Hong Kong! Far away from home and far away from any courses. Life was very different there compared to every single place I’ve been so far, so this is another whole new experience for me. I was enjoying every minute of this cultural experience. If you want to see some pictures of this 3-month journey, head over to my Instagram account @dom35089 and make sure to follow me on my journeys.

Let's talk about Disc Golf in Germany. Yes, the country where Simon Lizotte's career started. The history of disc golf in Germany goes back to the 80's. Till the turn of the millennium, the sport did grow slowly like in most countries in Central Europe. However, over the last years, the number of active members of the German Disc Golf Association is steadily growing and around 2,500 players within 58 clubs are organized among the German Frisbee Association. A raw guess says that more than 10,000 people in Germany play Disc Golf on a regular base.

Also the amount of courses is not that high: 70 courses, with most of them located in central/northern Germany around Braunschweig and Hannover. This low number of courses is our biggest issue we have to deal with. The situation with public authorities is not easy, as it is really hard to find places to install a course. Reason for that is the well protected nature in Germany, as we are a small country compared to the huge amount of people living in it. You want to see some numbers which underlines this problem?

California is about 20 % bigger than Germany, with around 50 % less people living in California, but around a quadruple of more courses (around 270). Finland, known as the biggest disc golf country in Europe, has a population of 5,5 Million and 565 courses. Germany, which is as big as Finland, has 80 million residents while having 70 courses.

Areas for a Disc Golf course are limited and many tournaments are played on temporary courses. But how should a local community grow without having a course to play at?

However, I think there is a lot of potential for disc golf in Germany. Many cities are looking for attractions for their residents. In southern Germany, the part I live in, had less snow in the last years and many skiing slopes were useless. This could be a potential for the future as the climate is changing.

I think it just needs a bit more conviction from authorities and it will be a matter of time until disc golf becomes more than a “fun sport” in Germany.

I've been talking about the current situation in Germany, but what's missing comparing to the mother country of disc golf - the United States?

Comparing Europe vs. USA in disc golf is not easy for me, as I've only played a few courses and three tournaments in the USA. When you look at the hard facts, Europe is far away to get close to the USA. Everything seems to be bigger and better in the US disc golf, especially the courses, players and tournaments. There are many disc golf companies established, we can watch play-by-play video almost every weekend and even live broadcast every few weeks. That's a massive difference. We don't have that many people who try to push the sport with their job or put so much time into media channels. Of course, there is this one country in northern Europe that has all these kind of stuff. But unfortunately we have only one Finland in Europe (yet) and many countries are lacking basic things like a variation of courses and player base.

But still, I think Europe is closing the gap year by year. More players are getting into the sport and more courses are being built. But more importantly, the way how tournaments are organized, is improving a lot. You can see this not only in the prime examples  such as the European Open or the European Masters, but also EuroTour events and all the local events try to run a professional event and present the sport to newcomers as good as possible.

What seems to me a big difference is the way people in Europe try to perform the sport. By saying that, I don't mean the kind of workout routine. But it seems to me that a European disc golfer tries to represent our sport as professional as possible to get it recognized as a serious sport. This is also a reason why companies and media not related to disc golf, start getting into the early development of the sport. We need more of that, because that's how we can catch up with the USA. Generally, I would say European Disc Golf is not too far behind the US than it looks by looking at the numbers. We are coming closer. And one day there will be a World Champion from Europe.

I want to end this write-up with a huge thank you to all the readers of this article. Stay positive on the course and enjoy throwing discs!

Olympics 2024: Surprising German never considered medal until final moments

2166190929

Esther Henseleit of Germany celebrates finishing the final round with her caddie, coach and fiance Reece Phillips.

Kevin C. Cox

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France — Forgive yourself if you haven’t been paying attention to Esther Henseleit. She wasn’t exactly expecting to find herself with an Olympic medal, either. Even as it was being placed around her neck.

The new face of German golf, who rallied to finish second behind Lydia Ko and take home the silver medal with a seven-birdie final round 66 at Le Golf National, became the first woman from continental Europe to win an Olympic medal in golf. Fact is, Henseleit, who turned pro at 20 in 2019 with a plus-7 handicap, is golf’s equivalent of a five-tool player. She hits for distance, is accurate with her irons, putts with confidence, is aggressive with purpose and knows that sometimes a smile is your best defense against pressure. So is not thinking too much about how you are about to make history when you are precisely about to make history.

MORE: American golfers' hopes dashed with water balls

“To be honest, not really,” Henseleit said when asked when or if she ever thought about an Olympic medal during a final round that began with her trailing 12 players. “I was so far back coming into today, and I had a great start, and after nine holes, I looked at the leaderboard and I think I was maybe in second, and I was more surprised. But I was always saying to myself, they can still make a lot of birdies.

“I knew I just had to keep playing aggressive, playing my own game. On the back nine, I managed to make some great pars and then to finish birdie, birdie is incredible. But even then, I thought they might still get past me, and I don't know what's going to happen. So it’s not sunken in yet. I think I'll need a few days.”

For the week, Henseleit led the field in birdies and was ranked second in strokes gained/off the tee and strokes gained/approach. No less impressive, with a medal on the line on Saturday, she birdied the stout, uphill par-4 17th and hit her longest drive of the week on the reachable par-5 18th. The latter left her barely 140 yards in on the par 5, and the routine two-putt for birdie mader her the leader in the clubhouse 45 minutes before Ko came home with gold.

Henseleit couldn’t, or wouldn’t believe the medal was hers until those closing holes, so much so she didn’t even take a break to roll some putts or hit some practice balls in case of a playoff. She was, in a way, no more stressed after her incredible round than she was during it.

“After my birdie on 17, I was really calm,” she said. “Going down 18, I managed to actually enjoy everything, to look at the crowds.”

Prior to this Olympic moment, Henseleit’s biggest wins were the Magical Kenya Open on the Ladies European Tour, which she won twice. She was both Rookie of the Year on the LET and winner of the Order of Merit in 2019. Her caddie and coach is Reece Phillips, who also happens to be her fiancé.

“Sitting in the clubhouse, knowing that I had a medal, and then to share it with my fiancé, that’s definitely special,” she said.

Making things a little more calm for Henseleit was how the leaders weren’t making the birdies that she did, and as all the more experienced medal contenders drifted away but one, Henseleit found herself actually pleasantly rooting for the woman who would win the gold.

“We were saying, if there's one person who I would want to finish in front of me, it's probably Lydia,” Henseleit said. “There are some players that you know they are not going to mess up coming down the last two, and she is definitely one of them. I was just kind of happy sitting there enjoying my silver medal.”

German city renamed ‘Swiftkirchen’ for Taylor Swift concerts gets 1,400 bids for the signs

BERLIN (AP) — The German city of Gelsenkirchen, which temporarily renamed itself “Swiftkirchen” before the American superstar played three concerts there in mid-July, said Wednesday it received about 1,400 bids from Germany and abroad for signs it put up with the name.

The new name was one of a flurry of fan attractions around the concerts on July 17, 18 and 19. The city then held an auction for 20 original “Swiftkirchen” signs.

The highest offer was 3,000 euros ($3,245), and the 20 highest bidders will be informed by email, the city said in a statement, adding that a total sum for the auction will be announced once all payments have been received. It said one of the winning bids came from outside Germany, but didn’t specify where.

The proceeds will go to a center for girls, a food bank for children and a shelter for women in Gelsenkirchen.

Another “Swiftkirchen” sign is now on display at Germany’s museum of post-World War II history in Bonn, the Haus der Geschichte, the city said.

A former coal mining city, Gelsenkirchen is one of Germany’s poorest. It’s known for the soccer team Schalke, a traditional heavyweight currently in the second division, and its stadium, which sometimes attracts international entertainers like Swift.

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

Beginning Friday and lasting through Sunday, over 150 of the best disc golfers from around the world are competing in the LWS Open at Idlewild in Burlington, Kentucky. The tournament is among several stops for the Disc Golf Pro Tour, which hosts tournaments in 20 states and two European countries.

Since the Disc Golf Pro Tour officially began in 2016, the LWS Open at Idlewild has been part of the tour since 2017 as an Elite Series event. According to tournament director and local shop owner Jason Kerl, Idlewild has also been among the best-rated public courses in the world. Kerl adds that whether you know a lot about the sport or it's your first time seeing it, there is always plenty of action to see each day.

"This is an individual sport. If you're used to watching team sports, these people are fighting for themselves. They don't have teammates to count on or anything. It is them against the course," Kerl said.

Each day, beginning Friday through Sunday, the female division will tee off in the mornings, and the male division will tee off in the late morning and afternoon hours. These players are not only playing to increase their standing for the season but to win big with a lot on the line.

"They'll be competing for a total purse of about $105,000 throughout the weekend," Kerl said.

Each year, the tour also brings out some of the best local players right here in great Cincinnati.

"Definitely representing every year, Zach Arlinghaus out of Edgewood, Rebecca Cox out of Cincinnati. They're both touring pros, so they are on the road with all these players every weekend and day in and day out," Kerl said.

Those wanting to attend can purchase tickets through Eventbrite, and kids 10 and younger get in for free with an adult ticket holder. If you'd like to watch live coverage online, the Disc Golf Network will host full tournament coverage each day, or you can watch the feature card the day after each round on YouTube from JomezPro.

Germany’s Esther Henseleit Surprises Herself to Land Silver with Final-Day flourish as China’s Xiyu Lin Wins Bronze at Paris Olympics

Esther Henseleit

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France – Esther Henseleit went into the final day of the Olympic women’s golf competition knowing she needed to produce the round of her life.

Seven shots adrift of the leaders, the German was not among the names under consideration in the chase for medals at Le Golf National. There was only one thing she needed to do to enter the conversation – put the pedal down and go low.

So, she did. Henseleit bookended her round with back-to-back birdies to post a seven-birdie 6-under 66, the second-lowest score of the final round, to climb from 20th overnight to the silver medal. A bogey at the 12th was a mere blip in what was otherwise a near-flawless performance.

“I was so far back coming into today,” she reflected afterward. “I had a great start, and after nine holes, I looked at the leaderboard, and I think I was maybe in second, and I was more surprised.

“I had a bit of a struggle at the start into the back nine, but I managed to make some great pars, and then to finish birdie-birdie, is incredible.”

Henseleit, who at the close of the competition led the field in birdies (22), is the first European woman in the modern era to earn an Olympic medal in the golf competition. As far as Olympic debuts go, this was near perfection.

Even though she is a two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, a victory has eluded Henseleit on the LPGA Tour, but with three top-10 finishes this year, that feels like it will come sooner rather than later. But for now, the 25-year-old was delighted with the biggest accomplishment in her career to date.

Xiyu Lin

For Lin, she was left to reflect on the much-needed advice of an elder Chinese counterpart in the lead-up to her third Olympic Games.

It had been kind of a ho-hum year for the LPGA Tour veteran, and with the Games coming up and desperately wanting to medal, Lin turned to 2016 bronze medalist Shanshan Feng before she left for Le Golf National.

“Shanshan is Shanshan. She's just happy every day,” said Lin, who played alongside Feng at the 2016 Rio Olympics. “She's like, ‘What's going on?’ I'm like, ‘I'm so anxious,’ because I feel like this year, I haven't been doing lots of good. I've been doing some good, but my game hasn't been like super sharp. I had my own struggles.

“And I said to Shanshan, ‘What should I be thinking going into this Olympics?’ She just asked me. She said, ‘Well, this is your third. So, what finish you think that you will be happy with yourself?’ I'm like, ‘Just get a medal.’ She's like, ‘Let's just do it then.’ I feel like that conversation was very important for me, and it narrowed everything down.”

Lin took Feng’s words to heart, going out at Le Golf National and following in her predecessor’s footsteps, earning the People’s Republic of China’s second bronze medal and first since Feng herself took bronze in Rio.

Lin fired her only sub-70 score of the week during Saturday’s final round just outside of Paris, carding a 3-under 69 that saw her make two bogeys and five birdies, the last of which that came on the par-5 18th hole ultimately lifted her to the final spot on the podium.

“I felt like after I talked to (Shanshan), I was trying to think what she had done in Rio to win the bronze medal,” Lin said. “I felt like she really enjoyed the week. She smiled at everybody, and she waved at all the fans who cheered for her. I just felt like I'm going to adapt that, and I think that's what I've done this week. We had a great week both on and off the course, and also having my fiancée and the families and agents, lots of people here with me, it's amazing.”

The 28-year-old may not have ever collected a title on the LPGA Tour, but even when that first victory does come, Lin’s performance at the Paris Olympics will likely outshine any hardware that she adds to her trophy room in the coming seasons.

And Lin learned one thing this week at Le Golf National that she’ll try to carry forward.

“I feel like I just pulled a Shanshan,” Lin said, “and that won me a bronze medal.”

A celebratory phone call to Feng just might be in order.

What Kamala Harris has said so far on key issues in her campaign

As she ramps up her nascent presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris is revealing how she will address the key issues facing the nation.

In speeches and rallies, she has voiced support for continuing many of President Joe Biden’s measures, such as lowering drug costs , forgiving student loan debt and eliminating so-called junk fees. But Harris has made it clear that she has her own views on some key matters, particularly Israel’s treatment of Gazans in its war with Hamas.

In a departure from her presidential run in 2020, the Harris campaign has confirmed that she’s moved away from many of her more progressive stances, such as her interest in a single-payer health insurance system and a ban on fracking.

Harris is also expected to put her own stamp and style on matters ranging from abortion to the economy to immigration, as she aims to walk a fine line of taking credit for the administration’s accomplishments while not being jointly blamed by voters for its shortcomings.

Her early presidential campaign speeches have offered insights into her priorities, though she’s mainly voiced general talking points and has yet to release more nuanced plans. Like Biden, she intends to contrast her vision for America with that of former President Donald Trump. ( See Trump’s campaign promises here .)

“In this moment, I believe we face a choice between two different visions for our nation: one focused on the future, the other focused on the past,” she told members of the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta at an event in Indianapolis in late July. “And with your support, I am fighting for our nation’s future.”

Here’s what we know about Harris’ views:

Harris took on the lead role of championing abortion rights for the administration after Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022. This past January, she started a “ reproductive freedoms tour ” to multiple states, including a stop in Minnesota thought to be the first by a sitting US president or vice president at an abortion clinic .

On abortion access, Harris embraced more progressive policies than Biden in the 2020 campaign, as a candidate criticizing his previous support for the Hyde Amendment , a measure that blocks federal funds from being used for most abortions.

Policy experts suggested that although Harris’ current policies on abortion and reproductive rights may not differ significantly from Biden’s, as a result of her national tour and her own focus on maternal health , she may be a stronger messenger.

High prices are a top concern for many Americans who are struggling to afford the cost of living after a spell of steep inflation. Many voters give Biden poor marks for his handling of the economy, and Harris may also face their wrath.

In her early campaign speeches, Harris has echoed many of the same themes as Biden, saying she wants to give Americans more opportunities to get ahead. She’s particularly concerned about making care – health care, child care, elder care and family leave – more affordable and available.

Harris promised at a late July rally to continue the Biden administration’s drive to eliminate so-called “junk fees” and to fully disclose all charges, such as for events, lodging and car rentals. In early August, the administration proposed a rule that would ban airlines from charging parents extra fees to have their kids sit next to them.

On day one, I will take on price gouging and bring down costs. We will ban more of those hidden fees and surprise late charges that banks and other companies use to pad their profits.”

Since becoming vice president, Harris has taken more moderate positions, but a look at her 2020 campaign promises reveals a more progressive bent than Biden.

As a senator and 2020 presidential candidate, Harris proposed providing middle-class and working families with a refundable tax credit of up to $6,000 a year (per couple) to help keep up with living expenses. Titled the LIFT the Middle Class Act, or Livable Incomes for Families Today, the measure would have cost at the time an estimated $3 trillion over 10 years.

Unlike a typical tax credit, the bill would allow taxpayers to receive the benefit – up to $500 – on a monthly basis so families don’t have to turn to payday loans with very high interest rates.

As a presidential candidate, Harris also advocated for raising the corporate income tax rate to 35%, where it was before the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that Trump and congressional Republicans pushed through Congress reduced the rate to 21%. That’s higher than the 28% Biden has proposed.

Affordable housing was also on Harris’ radar. As a senator, she introduced the Rent Relief Act, which would establish a refundable tax credit for renters who annually spend more than 30% of their gross income on rent and utilities. The amount of the credit would range from 25% to 100% of the excess rent, depending on the renter’s income.

Harris called housing a human right and said in a 2019 news release on the bill that every American deserves to have basic security and dignity in their own home.

Consumer debt

Hefty debt loads, which weigh on people’s finances and hurt their ability to buy homes, get car loans or start small businesses, are also an area of interest to Harris.

As vice president, she has promoted the Biden administration’s initiatives on student debt, which have so far forgiven more than $168 billion for nearly 4.8 million borrowers . In mid-July, Harris said in a post on X that “nearly 950,000 public servants have benefitted” from student debt forgiveness, compared with only 7,000 when Biden was inaugurated.

A potential Harris administration could keep that momentum going – though some of Biden’s efforts have gotten tangled up in litigation, such as a program aimed at cutting monthly student loan payments for roughly 3 million borrowers enrolled in a repayment plan the administration implemented last year.

The vice president has also been a leader in the White House efforts to ban medical debt from credit reports, noting that those with medical debt are no less likely to repay a loan than those who don’t have unpaid medical bills.

In a late July statement praising North Carolina’s move to relieve the medical debt of about 2 million residents, Harris said that she is “committed to continuing to relieve the burden of medical debt and creating a future where every person has the opportunity to build wealth and thrive.”

Health care

Harris, who has had shifting stances on health care in the past, confirmed in late July through her campaign that she no longer supports a single-payer health care system .

During her 2020 campaign, Harris advocated for shifting the US to a government-backed health insurance system but stopped short of wanting to completely eliminate private insurance.

The measure called for transitioning to a Medicare-for-All-type system over 10 years but continuing to allow private insurance companies to offer Medicare plans.

The proposal would not have raised taxes on the middle class to pay for the coverage expansion. Instead, it would raise the needed funds by taxing Wall Street trades and transactions and changing the taxation of offshore corporate income.

When it comes to reducing drug costs, Harris previously proposed allowing the federal government to set “a fair price” for any drug sold at a cheaper price in any economically comparable country, including Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Japan or Australia. If manufacturers were found to be price gouging, the government could import their drugs from abroad or, in egregious cases, use its existing but never-used “march-in” authority to license a drug company’s patent to a rival that would produce the medication at a lower cost.

Harris has been a champion on climate and environmental justice for decades. As California’s attorney general, Harris sued big oil companies like BP and ConocoPhillips, and investigated Exxon Mobil for its role in climate change disinformation. While in the Senate, she sponsored the Green New Deal resolution.

During her 2020 campaign, she enthusiastically supported a ban on fracking — but a Harris campaign official said in late July that she no longer supports such a ban.

Fracking is the process of using liquid to free natural gas from rock formations – and the primary mode for extracting gas for energy in battleground Pennsylvania. During a September 2019 climate crisis town hall hosted by CNN, she said she would start “with what we can do on Day 1 around public lands.” She walked that back later when she became Biden’s running mate.

Biden has been the most pro-climate president in history, and climate advocates find Harris to be an exciting candidate in her own right. Democrats and climate activists are planning to campaign on the stark contrasts between Harris and Trump , who vowed to push America decisively back to fossil fuels, promising to unwind Biden’s climate and clean energy legacy and pull America out of its global climate commitments.

If elected, one of the biggest climate goals Harris would have to craft early in her administration is how much the US would reduce its climate pollution by 2035 – a requirement of the Paris climate agreement .

Immigration

Harris has quickly started trying to counter Trump’s attacks on her immigration record.

Her campaign released a video in late July citing Harris’ support for increasing the number of Border Patrol agents and Trump’s successful push to scuttle a bipartisan immigration deal that included some of the toughest border security measures in recent memory.

The vice president has changed her position on border control since her 2020 campaign, when she suggested that Democrats needed to “critically examine” the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, after being asked whether she sided with those in the party arguing to abolish the department.

In June of this year, the White House announced a crackdown on asylum claims meant to continue reducing crossings at the US-Mexico border – a policy that Harris’ campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, indicated in late July to CBS News would continue under a Harris administration.

Trump’s attacks stem from Biden having tasked Harris with overseeing diplomatic efforts in Central America in March 2021. While Harris focused on long-term fixes, the Department of Homeland Security remained responsible for overseeing border security.

She has only occasionally talked about her efforts as the situation along the US-Mexico border became a political vulnerability for Biden. But she put her own stamp on the administration’s efforts, engaging the private sector.

Harris pulled together the Partnership for Central America, which has acted as a liaison between companies and the US government. Her team and the partnership are closely coordinating on initiatives that have led to job creation in the region. Harris has also engaged directly with foreign leaders in the region.

Experts credit Harris’ ability to secure private-sector investments as her most visible action in the region to date but have cautioned about the long-term durability of those investments.

Israel-Hamas

The Israel-Hamas war is the most fraught foreign policy issue facing the country and has spurred a multitude of protests around the US since it began in October.

After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in late July, Harris gave a forceful and notable speech about the situation in Gaza.

We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering. And I will not be silent.”

Harris echoed Biden’s repeated comments about the “ironclad support” and “unwavering commitment” to Israel. The country has a right to defend itself, she said, while noting, “how it does so, matters.”

However, the empathy she expressed regarding the Palestinian plight and suffering was far more forceful than what Biden has said on the matter in recent months. Harris mentioned twice the “serious concern” she expressed to Netanyahu about the civilian deaths in Gaza, the humanitarian situation and destruction she called “catastrophic” and “devastating.”

She went on to describe “the images of dead children and desperate hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time.”

Harris emphasized the need to get the Israeli hostages back from Hamas captivity, naming the eight Israeli-American hostages – three of whom have been killed.

But when describing the ceasefire deal in the works, she didn’t highlight the hostage for prisoner exchange or aid to be let into Gaza. Instead, she singled out the fact that the deal stipulates the withdrawal by the Israeli military from populated areas in the first phase before withdrawing “entirely” from Gaza before “a permanent end to the hostilities.”

Harris didn’t preside over Netanyahu’s speech to Congress in late July, instead choosing to stick with a prescheduled trip to a sorority event in Indiana.

Harris is committed to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, having met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at least six times and announcing last month $1.5 billion for energy assistance, humanitarian needs and other aid for the war-torn country.

At the Munich Security Conference earlier this year, Harris said: “I will make clear President Joe Biden and I stand with Ukraine. In partnership with supportive, bipartisan majorities in both houses of the United States Congress, we will work to secure critical weapons and resources that Ukraine so badly needs. And let me be clear: The failure to do so would be a gift to Vladimir Putin.”

More broadly, NATO is central to our approach to global security. For President Biden and me, our sacred commitment to NATO remains ironclad. And I do believe, as I have said before, NATO is the greatest military alliance the world has ever known.”

Police funding

The Harris campaign has also walked back the “defund the police” sentiment that Harris voiced in 2020. What she meant is she supports being “tough and smart on crime,” Mitch Landrieu, national co-chair for the Harris campaign and former mayor of New Orleans, told CNN’s Pamela Brown in late July.

In the midst of nationwide 2020 protests sparked by George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer, Harris voiced support for the “defund the police” movement, which argues for redirecting funds from law enforcement to social services. Throughout that summer, Harris supported the movement and called for demilitarizing police departments.

Democrats largely backed away from calls to defund the police after Republicans attempted to tie the movement to increases in crime during the 2022 midterm elections.

Caitlin clark rocks yankees jersey, hangs with aaron judge in the bronx during olympic break.

On Saturday, it was The House that Caitlin Built.

Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark hit Yankee Stadium as part of her Olympic break for the Bombers’ doubleheader against the Rangers, getting a tour of the grounds before the game, while also meeting some players.

She, along with boyfriend Connor McCaffery , were pictured on the grass in foul territory during batting practice as the Yankees prepared for the twin bill.

Clark was also seen in a training room with Yankees superstar Aaron Judge.

“[Anthony] Rizzo was amazing. He gave us a whole tour of the clubhouse,” Clark said while being interviewed during the game on WFAN. “Meeting all of them, they’re just so down to earth. They understand as another professional athlete that days get long. It’s fun to interact with other athletes.”

Clark was controversially left off Team USA’s women’s basketball squad at the Paris Olympics, but that did allow her to take a break from basketball for the first time in a year, as she only had a short layoff between her Iowa Hawkeyes losing the national title game and starting her rookie year with the Fever.

She’s taken full advantage, having spent some time soaking up the sun on a boat with teammates and attending a Jordan Davis concert , amongst other activities.

Clark’s first season in the WNBA has been a sensation that picked up right where her college career left off.

While the Fever struggled early, Clark easily made the All-Star team and has drawn sold-out buildings wherever she goes, with merchandise sales through the roof.

Her rivalry with Angel Reese has also been front-page news each time the Fever have faced the Chicago Sky.

While there has been ample second-guessing of Clark being left off the US Olympic team — including from Dawn Staley , who is on the selection committee — the biggest impact so far has been less on the results than the crowds watching Team USA romp through the tournament.

Team USA dismissed Australia 85-64 in the semifinal on Friday to move to the gold medal round against France.

They are 5-0 in the Olympics so far, with just one opponent coming within double digits.

The powerhouse American squad has not lost since 1992, when it settled for bronze.

Suspect in Taylor Swift Vienna concert plot confessed to planning suicide attack, officials say

M AINZ, Germany — The prime suspect in a plot to attack Taylor Swift’s upcoming " Eras Tour " shows in Vienna confessed that he had planned to kill himself and a large number of other people with knives and explosive devices, officials in Austria said Thursday.

The 19-year-old Austrian with North Macedonian roots had downloaded manuals for bomb building, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria's Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, told a news conference.

They also found hydrogen peroxide, homemade explosives, detonators and detonator cables at his apartment, he added. Explosives had been assembled, he said.

“The situation was serious, the situation is serious. But we can also say: A tragedy was prevented,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said at the same news conference.

“Large concerts are often a target of Islamist attacks,” he added.

Haijawi-Pirchner said Islamic State terrorist group and A l Qaeda material had been found at the home of the second suspect in the foiled plot, a 17-year-old Austrian citizen with Turkish and Croatian roots.

He added that the suspect had been employed for some days by a company that would have provided services at the concert, although he did not specify which services it provided.

Police also found videos and screenshots of home laboratories, which are often shared by ISIS and Al Qaeda, on the suspects' cellphones, he added.

A third suspect, a 15-year old Austrian national with Turkish roots, was currently being questioned by authorities, he added.

No one else is being sought in connection with the plot, although others may have known about the plans and are part of the ongoing investigation, he said.

Franz Ruf, the public security director at Austria’s Interior Ministry, said the prime suspect "gave a full confession" and no one else was being sought in connection with the case.

The United States intelligence community was the first to alert Austrian law enforcement about a potential terror attack, a senior U.S. law enforcement official told NBC News on Thursday. The U.S. intelligence community told Austria officials they had a problem and the general sense of what to look for, the official said.

Swift had been scheduled to play at the Austrian capital’s Ernst Happel Stadium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. An estimated 170,000 fans were expected to attend over the three days.

After news of the plot broke Wednesday, Barracuda Music, the events' organizer, said it had “no choice but to cancel” the shows “for everyone’s safety.”

Taylor Nation, an Instagram account run by Swift’s team, reposted the message to its story. All tickets will be refunded and ticketholders can visit a  website  to request refunds, the post said.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said in a post on X that “the cancelation of the Taylor Swift concerts by the organizers is a bitter disappointment for all fans in Austria.”

“The situation surrounding the apparently planned terror attack in Vienna was very serious,” he wrote.

But, he added, thanks to intensive cooperation between police, Austrian and foreign intelligence, “the threat could be recognized early on, tackled and a tragedy prevented.”

Swift has previously spoken about her concerns of a terrorist attack at one of her stadium shows. In 2019, she told  Elle magazine  it was her biggest fear.

“After the  Manchester Arena bombing  and the  Vegas concert shooting , I was completely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep three million fans safe over seven months,” Swift said ahead of the "Lover Tour," which was then canceled because of the Covid pandemic .

Andy Eckardt reported from Mainz, and Henry Austin reported from London.

Tim Walz’s journey from high school football coach to VP candidate

Walz, formerly a little-known Midwestern governor, faces the urgent task of introducing himself to the country with only about three months until Election Day.

Some 20 years ago, a lawyer named Kamala Harris won her first political race, becoming the first Black and South Asian woman elected district attorney of San Francisco in 2003 after campaigning on criminal justice policy changes, including opposition to the death penalty.

Halfway across the country, in Mankato, Minn., a high school teacher named Tim Walz had a lower-profile but no less fraught daily mandate: overseeing his social studies classes, coaching the football team and occasionally wrangling the lunchroom .

The unlikely convergence of Harris’s and Walz’s paths would take place more than two decades later, with the news Tuesday that Harris had selected Walz , now the governor of Minnesota, to be her running mate.

The much-anticipated decision creates a ticket with two candidates from strikingly different backgrounds: Harris, 59, is Black and Indian American and spent much of her career as an attorney and prosecutor in deep-blue California. Meanwhile, Walz, 60, is a White veteran and hunter who has spent most of his life in rural Nebraska and Minnesota — and is the first Democratic vice-presidential pick since 1964 who did not go to law school.

2024 presidential election

german tour discgolf

Walz’s foray into politics came later in life: Born and raised in rural Nebraska, after high school he enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he would serve for the next 24 years. After losing his father to lung cancer at age 19 — which he would later say shaped his views on health care — Walz enrolled in Chadron State College in Nebraska and graduated with a teaching degree in 1989.

Walz met his future wife, Gwen, while teaching after college, and they moved in 1996 to her home state of Minnesota. He would stay at Mankato West High School as a teacher and football coach for the next decade or so, until he decided to run for public office — reportedly motivated to do so after he and some students were denied entry to a 2004 George W. Bush campaign event because organizers found out they were Democrats.

In 2006, Walz won the race to represent Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District, flipping a Republican seat in a rural part of the state.

In Congress, Walz positioned himself as a rare moderate Democrat who was a strong supporter of gun rights, earning him an A rating from the National Rifle Association. In his freshman year, he praised then-President George W. Bush for proposing to expand the Army National Guard forces but also criticized Bush for his lack of a clear mission in the Iraq War and opposed his plan to send additional U.S. troops to Iraq.

“As the mission in Iraq has evolved from [finding] weapons of mass destruction to forming a democratic government to now just stabilizing to the point where the Iraqis can take over, the president has consistently been wrong on the plan on this and … I have deep concerns in that because the devil is in the details,” Walz said in 2007. “Giving us what the end may look like is one thing but actually delivering those — we need some accountability on that.”

Walz would win reelection to his seat five more times before leaving the House to run for governor. In the 2018 gubernatorial race, Walz defeated his Republican opponent by more than 10 percentage points.

By then, Walz had shifted to the left on several key issues, including on guns. After the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Walz said his then-17-year-old daughter, Hope, urged him to do more to prevent gun violence. On the campaign trail as he ran for governor that year, Walz said he in turn donated all the money he had ever taken from the NRA to charity and publicly pushed for background checks and eliminating reciprocal-carry agreements between states.

“I know basic gun safety isn’t a threat to my rights. It’s about keeping our kids safe,” Walz said last month about his evolution on the issue. “I had an A rating from the NRA. Now I get straight F’s. And I sleep just fine.”

Hope, now 23, has since made frequent appearances in videos posted to Walz’s social media accounts. In a recent MSNBC interview on Harris’s ascent, Walz said his daughter had told him it was “a brat summer” and he joked he didn’t know what she meant “but I’m sure it’s a good thing” — a reference to pop singer Charli XCX’s album that Democrats have embraced as they boost Harris to young voters.

In 2022, Walz handily won reelection to his second term while Democrats also flipped the state Senate, securing a trifecta for Democrats in St. Paul that has allowed them to pass liberal priorities. Democrats under Walz’s governorship have enshrined the right to abortion , allowed undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license, expanded background checks for gun transfers, legalized recreational marijuana and offered protections for people seeking or providing gender-affirming health care.

Walz also signed an executive order that removes the college degree requirement for 75 percent of Minnesota’s state jobs, a move that garnered bipartisan support and several states have also adopted. Democrats have also offered funding for free meals at schools and free college tuition for students from low-income families in Minnesota.

Asked in a July 28 interview with CNN if such policies would be fodder for conservative attacks, Walz responded sarcastically: “What a monster. Kids are eating and having full bellies, so they can go learn, and women are making their own health-care decisions.”

He later added: “So, if that’s where they want to label me, I’m more than happy to take the [liberal] label.”

In the days after President Biden announced he would no longer seek reelection , Walz made numerous appearances on television, and his folksy demeanor and willingness to use plain language to criticize former president Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) helped catapult him onto Harris’s vice-presidential shortlist. In interviews, Walz cast Trump and Vance as not just a threat to democracy but, simply, “weird,” an attack that quickly caught on for Democrats and that struck a nerve for Republicans.

“Who’s asking for this crazy stuff? Who’s asking to raise the price of insulin? Who’s asking to get rid of birth control? … Who’s sitting in a bar in Racine, Wisconsin, saying, ‘You know what we really need? We need to ban “Animal Farm.”’ Nobody is!” Walz told MSNBC last month , later adding: “Yes, they’re weird. They prove that every day. It’s an observation.”

Walz, formerly a little-known Midwestern governor, now faces the urgent task of introducing himself to the country with only about three months until Election Day. Harris and Walz held their first rally together on Tuesday in Philadelphia, the first stop in a four-day tour of battleground states.

For Walz, the timing will coincide with the “excitement in the air” that the start of a new school year brings, he said in a video posted last week .

“As a football coach, we’re back on offense,” Walz said, referring to Democratic optimism. “Vice President Harris is bringing the energy, making sure she’s going to be there to protect the democracy and get folks fired up, making sure we’re protecting reproductive rights, working for the middle class and bringing back some joy to our politics — so get out there, feel the excitement, get engaged.”
