Want to change up your annual Christmas routine and do something really different? Why not take advantage of some great December travel offers and escape with family or friends to a dream destination? Whether you like warm, sunny climates to chase the winter blues away or prefer a genuine Yuletide experience complete with snow, skiing and holiday festivities, here are some options starting with a Jamaica getaway to Bluefields Bay Villas . Located on the far west side of the island in an idyllic fishing and farming community, you can experience an unspoiled nature retreat on the water with this Jamaican holiday.

Quebec City, Canada

One of the more unique lodging options in Quebec City is the Hotel De Glace , a spectacular architectural creation made of ice and offering 44 themed rooms and suites (pictured). This ice hotel is the only one of its kind in North America and includes hot tubs and sauna amenities. While you are in Quebec City (a UNESCO World Heritage treasure), you can take a carriage tour, skate in Place D’Youville, browse the annual German Christmas market, stroll through the city’s Christmas Village and experience some of the season’s best festivals.

Sedona, Arizona

If you want a December getaway that combines scenic beauty with cultural and wellness offerings, then Sedona should be your mantra. From its healing spas and salons to a vibrant arts scene, the town is famous for its stunning location in a geological wonderland of red rock canyons, mesas and meadows. It is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts offering excellent biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, fishing, rafting and other activities. To top it off, you can experience the world’s largest 3D holiday light show from December 14-17 and celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Sedona Arts Center .

The 50th state in the U.S. is always an ideal vacation choice if you are seeking a tropical paradise. You also have unlimited choices on how to spend your time there. You could go snorkeling and take a cruise around Kealakekua Bay and other scenic wonders with Fair Wind Cruises . Treat yourself to luxurious accommodations at the Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast and experience a side trip to Botanical World Adventures . Tour the rain forests of Hana and the breaktaking sea cliffs of Maui via Maverick Helicopters . Outdoor enthusiasts can opt for a whale-watching kayak tour while those seeking a restful spa vacation can find the perfect retreat at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Lahaina (pictured above).

Lexington, Kentucky

Legendary bourbon distilleries, picturesque horse farms, historic estate tours by candlelight and the lovely scenic wonders of the bluegrass state await you in Lexington, Kentucky . Among the several hotels and inns offering special December packages are the Griffin Gate Marriott Resort & Spa , which includes a Bourbon Lover’s special, Gratz Park Inn in the historic downtown and 21c Museum Hotel , a former bank transformed into an 88-room boutique hotel and contemporary art museum with a private dining room situated in the bank’s former vault.

St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida

The warm, sunny shores of Florida are always a great choice for those who want to escape the cold in December and one of the most desirable areas is Western Florida on the Tampa Bay Gulf where you can find ideal waterfront lodgings in St. Petersburg or Clearwater . Among some of the top-rated accommodations that are offering special December-January rates are the historic Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club on the St. Petersburg bayfront and two Clearwater favorites, The Sheraton Sand Key (pictured) and the Wyndham Grand .

Baltimore, Maryland

One of the best-kept secrets among cities on the East Coast, Baltimore has enjoyed a cultural renaissance in recent years and is now a go-to place for its exciting culinary scene, arts community, historic districts and seasonal festivals, especially during the Christmas holidays. Take advantage of popular local accommodations such as the Hotel Monaco located near Baltimore’s inner harbor. Experience family-friendly events like the Santa Club buffet and train ride at the B&O Railroad Museum , skating at the Pandora Ice Rink or the 50th Anniversary of Kwanzaa Celebration at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture .

London, England

If you want to experience a Christmas holiday where old-fashioned tradition and contemporary culture blend together in delightful ways, London is your destination. Check out the dazzling holiday lights along Regent Street, Duke of York Square, Bond Street and other neighborhoods. Shop for gifts at Harrods or stroll the South Bank with a bag of roasted chestnuts. Go ice skating at Somerset House or join the carolers by candlelight at the Royal Albert Hall . Families will enjoy the Winnie the Pooh exhibition at the V&A Museum while theater devotees can attend definitive productions of "The Nutcracker" at the Royal Opera House and "La Boheme" at The King’s Head Theatre . Discounted lodgings can be found at Last Minute , Hotels.com and other travel websites.

Hilton Head, South Carolina

Golf, tennis, biking, fishing and family-friendly outdoor excursions are just a few of the activities that attract people to this lowcountry resort that is southwest of Charleston, South Carolina and northeast of Savannah, Georgia. But an alternative lure that is becoming increasingly popular are wellness getaways. Hilton Head Health offers a December package that includes accommodations, meals, yoga training, cardio kickboxing, spa facilities, paddleboarding, fitness classes and other amenities in a laid-back, beautiful setting.

What could be a better gift for ski fanatics and winter sports fans than a trip to Colorado in December? Consider a ski package from Keystone that includes their Kidtopia Spectacular or the Snowmass 50th anniversary special that comes with a fireworks display, prix fixe meals, a cabin jump and rail jam and other festivities. Experience the four day Olympic Qualifier competition in Breck via Dew Tour . Take advantage of the Winter Nights & City Light package from the historic Crawford Hotel in Denver or enjoy pure luxury with a winter welcome offer from the newly-debuted Hotel Talisa in Vail.

Tuscany, Italy

Tired of dealing with the tourist crowds in the spring, summer and fall in Italy? Why not consider a December getaway? Toscana Resort Castelfalfi in the heart of Tuscany is offering a variety of vacation options from romantic weekend specials to culinary tours and tastings to unlimited golf and spa packages. There are also Christmas and New Year’s Eve specials that bundle the food and wines of the region with live music and luxurious accommodations.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Nightlife, fine dining, casinos and spectacular light displays offer a different kind of Yuletide holiday in Las Vegas. Visit The Ice Rink at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas where you can enjoy rooftop skating that overlooks the heart of the strip. Chose from various room offers at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino which include live show packages featuring Kelly Clarkson, Patton Oswald, Magic Mike, Nickelback or many others. Celebrate the first year anniversary of the Lucky Dragon Hotel & Casino (pictured) with a special deal that includes Asian dining, gaming and festivities such as Chinese Lion and Dragon dances.

Best Places to Travel After Christmas

Post-Christmas Getaways

The week between Christmas and New Year's is an ideal time to steal away. You've celebrated Christmas, the holiday season is winding down, and many businesses and schools remain closed, making it easier to plot an escape, and it's a time of festivals and other special events that roll out the welcome mat for visitors. Whether you're in search of sun and sand or traditional holiday-themed winter fun, keep these destinations in mind for a final getaway for the year.

Rocky Coastline with Promenade in Acapulco, Mexico, Several Houses Along the Cliffs, During Early Evening with Lights

1. Acapulco

Among the best places to visit after Christmas, Acapulco is an affordable beach paradise known for its turquoise water and unforgettable, world-class cuisine. Top attractions include XTASEA, a zip line over the Bay of Puerto Marques that reaches 75 miles an hour, and La Roqueta Island off Acapulco's coast for snorkeling and diving. Looking for something family-friendly? The Rollo Aquatic park has wave pools, waterslides, and lazy rivers for kids of all ages.

Sakura at Sunrise Khun Chang Khian, Chiang Mai, Thailand, Cherry Blossoms Frame the Image with Sunrise in the Distance

2. Thailand

A top budget-friendly winter destination choice of Travelzoo's Gabe Saglie. Visitors flock to beautiful beaches and enjoy diverse food offerings. Flowers bloom right through our winter, particularly in northern Thailand. The mountain and hill region of Khun Chang Khien, Doi Inthanon, and Doi Angkhang in Chiang Mai come alive with the vibrant pink of Wild Himalayan cherry blossoms .

Christmas Season in the French Quarter at Night, New Orleans, Lots of People Along the Street and Buildings with Holiday Decorations

3. New Orleans

If there's one thing New Orleans does well , it's celebrations. Holiday festivities continue after Dec. 25, including Celebration in the Oaks in City Park, which includes hundreds of thousands of colorful and illuminated Christmas decorations. Temps can dip down into the 40s at night, so pack warm clothes and, if you get chilly, grab a cup of hot cocoa at The Creole Creamery or a cup of white hot chocolate at Envie Espresso Bar & Cafe.

Houses and snow mountains panorama in bulgarian ski resort Bansko

4. Bansko, Bulgaria

This European Union country might not the first to come to mind when considering a place to travel in December, but you shouldn't count it out. According to one blogger , this ski town offers the best of both worlds: "a mix of a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic old town and buzzing nightlife near the gondola." It's also located in Pirin National Park, which offers more than 150 square miles of outdoor adventure and scenery. The BBC just named it  an "unlikely new digital nomad hub," do don't surprised if you're tempted to stay.

Trees and Castle Ruins Covered By Frost Along the Bank of the Corrib River, Ireland During Winter

It might not immediately come to mind as one of the best after-Christmas vacation spots in December, but keep Ireland in mind  for a post-holiday escape, Saglie says. Prices tumble throughout Europe in November and flights from the U.S. to Ireland are numerous, which helps keep prices down. Ireland offers a range of accommodation options, from luxe five-star castles to more than 1,000 bed and breakfasts, some well under $100 a night.

Aerial view of Idyllic beach near the Senegambia hotel strip in the Gambia, West Africa.

6. The Gambia, West Africa

If you're looking for something a little more off the beaten path for a late December/early January vacation, consider this African country south of Dakar and Senegal. It's known for it's hospitable culture, outdoor adventure, and mostly English-speaking population. This is also its dry season, so expect abundant sunshine and temps in the 80s. Must-visit attractions here include the River Gambia National Park, Kotu Beach, and The Reptile Farm. Several local tour companies offer well-rated day excursions.

Is Spirit Airlines Safe?

Another of the best places to travel between Christmas and New Year's, the Land of Fire and Ice is pure magic in late December and early January. Visitors here  can spend days on snowmobile tours and adventurous glacier trekking expeditions, or dash across picturesque landscapes on husky rides, says Cammie Burke, Europe expert for travel company Scott Dunn. Once the sun sets, cozy up with a bowl of lobster bisque by a hotel fire and watch the Northern Lights  dance across the sky. Iceland's capital city, Reykjavik, is a great place for foodies, and — with its Wake Up Reykajvík New Year's Eve party — not a bad place to ring in the new year.

Christmas Tree on Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown Miami, Surrounded By Palm Trees and Tall Buildings

Miami's December beach weather is hard to beat (hovering between the 70s and low 80s) and nonstop flights with low prices make it one of the best last-minute, end-of-year vacations. Iconic South Beach is home to some of the city's best restaurants, nightlife, live music, and shopping . Don't miss the city's graffiti art zone, the Wynwood Walls.

The Hidden Beach Marietas Islands Puerto Vallarta

9. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Those looking to escape winter can grab some sun and sand at this Pacific coast resort city. Stay in town and experience the charm of cobblestone streets, historic churches, and seaside sculptures. Or head out on day trips to locales like Sayulita, where you can take a surfing lesson or drink a pina colada on the beach. Or venture to tiny and remote Yelapa, which is accessible only by boat.

People Ice Skating on an Ice Rink During Late Evening in Chicago, with a Row of Buildings Behind, During Christmas Season

10. Chicago

Yes, it is cold in Chicago in late December. Ignore it to glide through one of the city's many ice skating rinks, including those in Maggie Daley Park and McCormick Tribune Plaza. Eat your way through Restaurant Row on Randolph Street. There's also a rich art scene, with galleries and theaters offering refuge from the cold — and don't miss live music at the iconic Buddy Guy's Legends blues club.

Beach of Bimini, Bahamas with a Lone Boat on the Ocean, Seen Through Trees with a Rows of Flags Swaying in the Wind

11. Bimini, Bahamas

Just 50 nautical miles from South Florida — a mere 25-minute plane ride or two-hour ferry from Miami — Bimini is known for stunning beaches, friendly locals, and charming resorts. Ernest Hemingway was fond of deep-sea fishing here; Martin Luther King Jr. was a regular visitor. Learn Bimini's unique story at cultural and historical sites such as Heroes Park, or take guided eco-tours through lush mangroves to observe wildlife.

Two friends exploring Barcelona together

12. Barcelona, Spain

If Europe is calling your name but you want a destination that's a little warmer, consider this Italian seaside city, where temperatures hover around 50-60. If you arrive a few days before Dec. 25, you can still find the Christmas spirit alive in the city's many Christmas markets. Be sure to stop in at the Devil's Kitchen, a German bar and grill that serves homemade mulled wine.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, Oaxaca, Mexico at Night with People Walking Around on the Streets, Lively Atmosphere, Fish-Eye Lens

13. Oaxaca City, Mexico

Designated a World Heritage Site, Oaxaca offers a glimpse of various chapters of Mexican history — pre-Hispanic, colonial, independent, modern, and contemporary phases — in its architecture, museums, festivals, and colorful crafts , as well as its pre-Columbian ruins.

Flamenco Beach, Culebra, Puerto Rico, a Colorful Umbrella Under a Palm Tree on the Beach Next to the Ocean

14. Puerto Rico

Whether you’re a nature lover or a foodie or someone just looking for a break from the cold, this U.S. territory will not let you down. With winter temperatures in the 80s, adventuresome travelers can swim at night with bioluminescent plankton in certain coastal bays and see the tiny creatures light up when stimulated by movement. Or they can explore the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System: El Yunque in Puerto Rico. Foodies will have plenty to explore as well with the island’s craft beer and gastropub scenes .

15. Bucks County, Pennsylvania

At Peddler's Village, visitors can explore a winter wonderland that includes a whimsical gingerbread display through early January, as well as 65 shops and boutiques, a 1920s carousel, and an arcade.

Big Inflatable Santa Claus with Bear Riding on a Motorcycle in Downtown, Alexandria, Virginia, During the Christmas Season, Sunlight Shining on It

16. Alexandria, Virginia

If you haven't quite tired of the holiday spirit, Alexandria charms with brick-lined streets and twinkling holiday lights — King Street is like a real-life Dickens village. Just minutes from Washington, D.C. , by subway, Alexandria is also a foodie's heaven. If you're still there for New Year's Eve, don't miss First Night Alexandria, a festival that includes music, fireworks, and more.

Historical Building in Downtown Hamilton, Ohio, During Winter, with Cars Parked in Front

17. Hamilton, Ohio

A small community along the Great Miami River that's oozing historical charm , Hamilton dates back to 1791. 9 Last-Minute December Travel Deals

Los Angeles

Remember, this is an El Niño season, so temper your weather expectations. Luckily there's plenty to do in L.A. , even when it rains: Plan a visit to the Getty Center, attend a concert at the futuristic Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, or watch a movie at the ArcLight Hollywood, where a friendly usher introduces every film. Airfares are higher in December, but with so many flights to L.A., you should find reasonable fares. Get away from the usual tourists spots in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood and stay for less than $200 at the new and modern The Line Hotel in frenetic Koreatown, L.A.'s most dense neighborhood. On some streets, you may even swear you're in Seoul.

Image may contain Building Hotel Resort Summer Water and Outdoors

The best thing about Cancun is competition. Nearly every large U.S. city has a nonstop flight, and the glut of options often leads to fare wars. That's not as true at holiday time, but there are reasonable options, like Denver-Cancun on Frontier for less than $500. Within an hour of Cancun's airport, there are hundreds of hotels of every type - luxury, budget, bed and breakfast and all-inclusive. Many are full, but some could get cancellations, and that may lead to last-minute deals. Availability changes daily, but if you're looking for a post-Christmas getaway, consider the boutique Hotel Cielo in Playa Del Carmen , with rooms under $300. Or just check your favorite hotel site for "Rivera Maya" and see what comes available.

British Columbia

You won't find deep discounts around Christmas, but the U.S.-Canada exchange rate is favorable for Americans, so British Columbia might be more enticing for skiers than a few years ago. If you're feeling adventurous, book a $500 roundtrip ticket on Philippine Airlines from JFK, even between Christmas and New Year's. (The flight continues to Manila.) The popular ski town of Whistler is nearly sold out in late December, but you try the Hilton Whistler Resort & Spa , with some rooms for $500 a night, bookable on third-party sites. You'll do better renting a condo on Airbnb, though few remain on peak days.

It'll be dark before 4 p.m., and you may never see the sun. But London is vibrant at the holidays, and it's a cheap flight from the East Coast, even last minute. Fly coach from New York nonstop on several airlines for about $900 roundtrip or splurge on all-business class airline LaCompagnie, which has a "Winter Madness in London" deal that gets you two roundtrip tickets for $2,500 total. For lodging, consider the Christmas special at St. Martins Lane London . For about $430 a night, you'll get an English breakfast and three-course Christmas lunch for two. If you prefer hipster, try Shoreditch's Ace Hotel and its Christmas Shopping package that includes a room upgrade, food and beverage credit, and 15 percent off at some shopping boutiques in East London's trendiest neighborhood.

Mexico City

Many well-heeled locals leave for the beaches over the holidays, and some tourists spots and restaurants close, but do not let that dissuade you. This means you'll find deals in one of the North America's most exciting cities. For $475, you might stay in Las Alcobas , a stylish 35-room boutique in the posh Polanco district and Mexico's best hotel in 2015, according to Conde Nast Traveler readers . For less expensive luxury, book the five-star JW Marriott for less than $200. Airfares from California tend to be cheaper than from the East Coast, so this might be a better getaway from L.A. or San Francisco than New York.

This image may contain Summer Tropical Human and Person

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

You can thank JetBlue for this one. In late December, New York's hometown airline has as many as seven daily flights from JFK, and more seats generally means cheaper fares. You won't find any deep discounts - a roundtrip ticket may cost $700 or more, depending on dates - but Santo Domingo should be cheaper than Caribbean hotspots like Nassau, Bahamas or Montego Bay, Jamaica. One problem: Santo Domingo is not known for luxury resorts. Still, if you're creative, you can enjoy the sun. Book at the new JW Marriott for about $260, or try the Hostal Nicolas De Ovando , a 104-room boutique in Santo Domingo's Colonial Quarter, available many days for about $200.

Mammoth, California

It's not as posh as Vail or Aspen, but each winter, Californians flock to Mammoth Mountain about 300 miles north of Los Angeles. This is an El Nino year - a weather phenomenon that will bring extra rain and snow to the West Coast - and ski conditions could be the best in years. From L.A., fly Alaska Airlines in late December for less than $300, depending on dates. Flights from New York cost considerably more, but consider flying to L.A. and renting a car. Make plans soon, though, as hotel inventory is thin. At last check, a Queen bed room at the Mammoth Mountain Inn was $299 between Christmas and New Year's.

Napa, California

In Northern California's Wine Country , they call December "Cabernet Season." There is some spin here, as December, among the coldest months of the year, is not the perfect time to visit Napa. But off-season means deals. Many hotels have special offers between November and March, including The Silverado, where Cabernet Season means 25 percent off the best available rate and two-for-one wine tastings. If you're flying, San Francisco is the best bet for reasonable fares.

Port of Spain, Trinidad

Another warm-weather locale not known for luxury resorts or fancy beaches, Trinidad and Tobago's capital could be your best chance at an inexpensive tan. Depending on your dates, you can still fly from New York for around $600 on JetBlue or Caribbean Airlines. The Hyatt Regency Trinidad ($199 per night) is more of a business hotel, but it is on the Gulf of Paria, and from many rooms have a sea view. If you crave the beach, the hotel recommends four nearby.

Do you have a passport? If so, our first suggestion is Mexico. Board a plane to warmer lands and enjoy Mexican beaches with warm water. Enjoy the flavours of Mexican food and do lots of tequila tasting. Can you imagine swapping your cap for slippers? Enjoy a week’s rest and count the twelve chimes with your feet in the sand.

December last minute travels

The Spanish capital, Madrid, is our second suggestion. With one of the most famous Christmas markets in Europe, the city is an excellent option for a weekend getaway in December. Flight tickets are affordable and there is a wide range of accommodation to suit all tastes. During the month of December there are many activities taking place in Madrid, the hardest thing is to choose!

If you want to spend a long weekend of rest in Portugal, we suggest you visit the Alentejo. From the interior to the coast, there are many, many options. Make Évora your “base” for a visit to the beaches on the coast, the wine farms in the region or the various towns and villages. Of course, you can’t leave Alentejo without dining in a restaurant to the sound of Cante Alentejano (Alentejo singing).

Fuerteventura

Spain again joins this list with the island of Fuerteventura. It is the closest Canary Island to Africa, located just 100 km off the north coast. In December, the average maximum temperature is around 24ºC. I wonder if you can take a dip? If so, catch some waves in Corralejo, go on a hike by the volcanoes or relax in the sun.

Our latest suggestion for last minute travel destinations in December takes you back to the cold. Wear warm jackets, snow boots, hats, scarves and gloves and travel to Norway’s capital city. Once you’ve arrived in Oslo, set off on an adventure to Svalbard, Hammerfest or the Lofoten Islands. These places are top spots to see the Aurora Borealis. Norway has a good transport network. Whether by train, boat or even plane, you can easily move around the country. This is your chance to cross off the list of things you have to do at least once in your life – see the Aurora Borealis.

These are the best places to visit in December in the U.S. and around the world.

The end of the year is incredibly busy with gift shopping, decorating for the holidays, and family gatherings. So before you run out of open days, take some time to book that winter vacation — even if it’s just a weekend getaway. Whether you’re looking for a warm-weather escape to end the year or a festive destination brimming with holiday cheer, we’ve got you covered. From ski towns to beach resorts, here are 11 of the best places to travel in December.

Lake Tahoe, California

Don Eim/Travel + Leisure

Snowfall usually begins in late November in Lake Tahoe, so you can be one of the first to hit the slopes when you visit in December. The destination’s sapphire blue lake, pine forests, and snow-covered peaks are gorgeous this time of year. Stay on the south shore at Edgewood Lake Tahoe , which hosts holiday festivities throughout the month; the resort’s new multi-bedroom Villa Suites are perfect for families or groups. On the north shore, Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe features ski-in/ski-out access and a mountainside concierge. Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe and Edgewood Lake Tahoe were both among Travel + Leisure’s Best Resorts in the Western United States in 2022. Nearby Reno Tahoe offers a wide range of winter activities and a convenient airport with flights from many major cities.

Palm Springs, California

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

If you’re looking for mild weather, superb restaurants, golf, plush hotels, spas, and great shopping, put Palm Springs on your December must-visit list. And at just two hours from Los Angeles and San Diego, the Greater Palm Springs area is easy to reach. Check the concert and sports events schedule at the new Acrisure Arena , which hosted Cirque du Soleil’s new Corteo this summer — a first for the desert venue. Lodging ranges from expansive resorts like the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort to boutique and adult-only properties. Stay just steps from downtown Palm Springs in a quiet and historic neighborhood at Auric House ; you’ll feel like a local as you stroll to restaurants, shops, and breakfast at nearby Korakia Pensione .

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston topped the T+L World’s Best Awards list this year for favorite cities in the United States, and it’s a perfect destination for the holidays, with gorgeous decorations adorning historic buildings, streets, and neighborhoods. Christmas markets, tree lightings, parades, and seasonal events inspire the holiday spirit during December. The Charleston Place gets decked out for the season, and the other best Charleston hotels include the Emeline , Planters Inn (a Relais & Châteaux property), and The Vendue , Charleston’s art hotel.

Newport Beach, California

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

With weather in the 60s and lots of Southern California sunshine, Newport Beach is a great December destination for hiking, cruising the harbor in a Duffy boat, whale watching, visiting Balboa Island, or strolling along the beach. The city celebrates the holiday season with the annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade each night from Dec. 13-17, when more than 100 decorated yachts, boats, kayaks, and canoes cruise the waterfront, along with music, fireworks, and glittering lights. Stay near the action at Lido House , an Autograph Collection hotel, or be among the first to stay at the new Pendry Newport Beach . For five-star luxury, two oceanfront golf courses, and stunning views, choose The Resort at Pelican Hill . Accommodation options here include bungalow rooms and suites with fireplaces and private terraces, as well as Mediterranean-style villas with two, three, or four bedrooms.

Branson, Missouri

tomofbluesprings/Getty Images

In Branson, the two-month-long Ozark Mountain Christmas celebration kicks off in early November, and it’s an incredible way to get into the holiday spirit. Known as “America’s Christmas Tree City” for good reason, Branson features more than 1,500 decorated trees, shows, parades, 6.5 million lights, drive-through displays , and photo opportunities with Santa Claus. Throughout December, there’s caroling by the fire, story times, and a candy village displayed in the lobby of the Chateau on the Lake . At Big Cedar Lodge , guests can sip hot cocoa, see twinkling holiday lights, skate at the Winter Wonderland ice rink, make wreaths, and bake gingerbread — and that’s just a few of the property’s annual Home for the Holidays activities.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Nikada/Getty Images

December is considered one of the best months to visit Dubai thanks to moderate weather that’s ideal for being outdoors exploring the city. Visitors will find a festive atmosphere and myriad seasonal events , from elaborately decorated Christmas trees and holiday markets to shopping malls decked out for the season. See public art in the Dubai Design District, lounge at the beachfront in La Mer, or visit the historic Al Fahidi District. Stay at the elegant Habtoor Palace , LXR Hotels & Resorts, or the plush Burj Al Arab Jumeirah . Welcoming guests starting Dec. 1, One&Only One Za’abeel is located in the heart of the city near the Dubai World Trade Centre. The Lana , Dorchester Collection, Dubai, will also open in December beside the Dubai Canal.

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Located on the Yucatan Peninsula along the Caribbean, Riviera Maya is 30 minutes south of Cancun and offers calm seas, sandy beaches, sunny weather, and lodging for all tastes, from boutique hotels to lavish resorts. Maya archaeological sites are fascinating to explore, and cenotes — caves or underground holes filled with cool water — are another intriguing feature of the Yucatan. Mayakoba , a private community with nearly 600 acres of lagoons, jungles, and beaches, includes El Camaleón Golf Club , luxury residences, and four resorts: Fairmont Mayakoba , Andaz Mayakoba , Banyan Tree Mayakoba , and Rosewood Mayakoba . Celebrate the new year with legendary Mexican musician Luis Miguel in concert on Dec. 31 at the nearby golf course. Also in Riviera Maya is Maroma , A Belmond Hotel, now open after an extensive renovation and redesign led by Tara Bernerd & Partners .

Vienna, Austria

Ambika Verma/Travel + Leisure

While Vienna is lovely year-round, it is dazzling in December, with holiday decorations, lights, markets, and Christmas trees galore. Delicious Austrian food is part of the celebration, and mugs of Christmas punch (made with rum and/or brandy) keep shoppers warm as they browse or sample wiener schnitzel, sausage, apple strudel, or traditional roasted chestnuts. Or, stop into a café for coffee and Sachertorte, a famous Austrian chocolate cake. T+L readers recently voted for their favorite Vienna hotels , and The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna took the top spot. The Rosewood Vienna , which just opened last year, and The Amauris Vienna , a Relais & Châteaux property, are also fine options. Note that river cruises are a great way to see Europe’s many Christmas markets, and itineraries are offered through several companies, including AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises , and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises .

Fort Worth, Texas

Think about this lively Texas city for an end-of-year vacation or weekend getaway, when the weather is in the comfortable high 50s and there’s so much to do. The Fort Worth Zoo features holiday decorations, lights, falling snow, and visits from Santa in December. The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District , where ranchers once traded cattle and cowboys drove the animals to market, is still in action with a daily longhorn cattle drive, restaurants, rodeo shows, bars, and tours of the original wooden corrals. Stay at Hotel Drover , in the heart of the District, where holiday decor and activities add to the fun. Near the downtown Sundance Square entertainment area, Kimpton Harper Hotel is set in a historic building that was once the tallest in Fort Worth. The Crescent Hotel, Fort Worth opens this autumn and features a Canyon Ranch Wellness Club with a full menu of fitness classes and spa treatments.

U.S. Virgin Islands

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

Located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas make up the U.S. Virgin Islands. Whether you travel to the Caribbean for the beaches, water sports, outdoor adventures, shopping, or nightlife, these islands have myriad options. Join the fun at St. Croix’s Crucian Christmas Festival, which begins Dec. 10 and combines Caribbean, African, Spanish, and Dutch influences in traditional carnival events. The closing parade happens on Jan. 6, when thousands of masqueraders fill the streets. Among accommodation options are the waterfront King Christian Hotel in downtown Christiansted, St. Croix and The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas , which hosts holiday activities throughout December. Passports are not required for travel to this United States territory.

This sunny island in the eastern Caribbean is a perfect December escape, whether you’re traveling with friends or family or looking for a romantic getaway. From relaxing on the beach or by the pool to active adventures like kitesurfing, diving, or playing golf, there are lots of fun things to do on Anguilla. Places to stay include boutique hotels, resorts, villas, and apartments at a range of prices. Consider the family-friendly Four Seasons Resort & Residences Anguilla , Malliouhana Resort , and Frangipani Beach Resort , where there’s fun for everyone. Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel and Altamer offer private villas. Zemi Beach House on Shoal Bay Beach features a spa set in a 306-year-old Thai house.

Alerts tell you if the price is a certain percentage lower than usual , so you’ll know whether you’re getting a good deal. Last-Minute Winter Break Trip Ideas for Every Budget

There's still time to snap up great deals in nearby and far-flung locales during the busy travel season.

Punta Cana

Getty Images

If you're looking for warm weather and beautiful beaches this winter, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic can be a cost-effective option.

With winter fast approaching, a time when cooler temperatures and seasonal discounts tempt us to skip town for a relaxing escape, chances are if you're not clamoring for a warm, sunny getaway, you're yearning to go on a more far-flung adventure. But while finding a reason to take a recess around the holidays isn't difficult, pulling off an affordable trip at the last minute is another task altogether. That's why we tapped industry experts to bring you winter vacation ideas that cater to a variety of tastes, interests and price points, along with tips and tricks to maximize savings during the high season.

If You Want to Visit Europe ...

"The euro has been down significantly against the dollar all year, making Europe a better value than it's been in years," says Terrie Hansen, Virtuoso's senior vice president of marketing. She highlights Germany and Spain as choice value destinations for budget-minded visitors, noting that they're typically more affordable than Italy, France and the U.K.

Colleen Clark, managing editor of Jetsetter , also suggests checking out low-cost budget carriers like WOW Air. While she cautions that you shouldn't expect any bells and whistles on the value-oriented carrier, she notes you can score great flight deals and fly out of convenient hubs, including Boston's Logan International Airport and Baltimore's BWI Airport to destinations such as Paris, Dublin and Berlin, she says. And as far as lodging is concerned, she advises looking for lower-priced hostel-hotel hybrids, which offer a mix of standard hotel rooms and shared multi-bed units to entice budget-conscious visitors seeking an inexpensive place to stay in popular destinations such as Paris, Barcelona and Rome. Clark points to Generator Hostels, as a great option for trendy yet reasonably-priced accommodations.

Best Bet for the Bargain-Hunter: Berlin

Sure, Berlin is an alluring place to visit year-round with flourishing culture, art and nightlife scenes, but winter offers travelers the chance to explore bright Christmas markets and eclectic galleries without heavy crowds. Currently, there are round-trip flights in December from Boston to Berlin for as low as $505 (excluding taxes); round-trip flights from BWI in December are as low as $540 (excluding taxes). Best of all, there are plenty of free and noteworthy attractions to explore, from the graffiti-sprayed East Side Gallery, the longest remaining sliver of the Berlin Wall, to the sprawling Tiergarten, a green space lined with cutting-edge stores and restaurants.

If You Are Longing for Sand and Sun ...

If you have your heart set on traveling somewhere with white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters this winter, you'll find competitive flight deals to sunny locales across the Caribbean, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Puerto Rico from hubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York City and Atlanta, says Clem Bason, CEO of goSeek . Plus, many of these cost-effective destinations offer affordable accommodations and attractions. Another piece of advice: "Always ask for a discount," Bason says, noting that if you decide to travel in early December, "Hotels are rarely, if ever, full that time of year, and your probability of getting a great upgrade for no or a minimal charge goes up significantly."

According to Hansen, it's also important to think holistically while organizing your trip. "Often an air or hotel deal will drive the decision to venture to a particular destination, but the cost of food and activities should be factored in," she says. She also suggests flying early in the day on a Monday, Thursday or Friday to land the best flight deals.

Best Bets for the Bargain-Hunter: Miami and Puerto Rico

With plenty of opportunities for beachside lounging, people watching and admiring iconic art deco artwork and architecture, Miami is especially enticing for winter-weary visitors craving a relaxing retreat. Plus, Clark points out there are plenty of free attractions and under-the-radar facets "off the well-trodden South Beach path." She highlights authentic Cuban meals in Little Havana, stand-up paddleboarding and strolling through the trendy Wynwood Arts District as must-do Miami experiences that won't break the bank. For cost-conscious travelers, she suggests checking out Freehand Miami, which sits nearby top attractions, like Lincoln Road Mall and Ocean Drive, and offer standard private rooms starting at $169 nightly for stays in December. For an even more budget-friendly getaway, check out Red South Beach Hotel, which goSeek lists for $79 a night from Dec. 7-14. Best of all, you can secure inexpensive airfare before Christmas, Bason says, highlighting that round-trip flights out of New York City start at $138 in December.

Powdery sands, turquoise waves and swaying palms are just a quick flight away from South Beach in Puerto Rico . Beyond the convenience factor of hopping on a direct flight out of major hubs like the District of Columbia, Boston and New York City to San Juan, prices drop in winter, with round-trip flights from New York hovering at around $218 in December. Plus, if you prioritize adventure over rest and relaxation, there's a bioluminescent bay to explore, a lush rainforest to hike and a 500-year-old fort to admire – all of which are easy on the wallet.

Best Bet for the Big Spender: The Dominican Republic

For a high-end winter getaway to remember, Clark suggests heading to the Dominican Republic. It's become a rising destination for luxury-seekers – and for good reason. Take the opulent Aman Resorts' new Amanera property, which opens on Nov. 23, 2015. Stretching out across 2,170 acres, the resort boasts clifftop casitas overlooking the ocean, a 400-acre nature reserve with lagoons and a golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. A stay here will cost you, with standard prices starting at $1,792 a night in December, but as Clark put it, the unspoiled landscape and spectacular scenery might make you think you're on an island in Thailand. If that's too pricey, you can also find more cost-effective all-inclusive accommodations in Punta Cana , such as Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana.

If You Are Itching to Go Even Farther Afield ...

"For a non-traditional winter getaway, skip the beach or ski slopes and head to the Southern Hemisphere," Hansen suggests. Another option: Destinations like Cuba and less-trafficked destinations across South America are ideal for a memorable, unconventional getaway, she says. "Seek out countries that still retain their untouched charm and heritage. Cuba is on everyone's radar now, with predictions that it will change significantly once it opens up to more travelers," she adds, highlighting Argentina, Chile and Peru as other must-see destinations right now. "In Argentina, you have everything from stunning Iguazu Falls to the culture and shopping of Buenos Aires. Chile offers plenty of options for adventure seekers as well as world-class wines. And Machu Picchu is another of those trips of a lifetime that must be experienced."

Best Bet for the Bargain-Hunter: Bogotá, Colombia

According to Clark, Colombia's storied capital as an incredible bargain this winter. Not only is the vibrant city easily accessible with a myriad of short, inexpensive flights from hubs along the East Coast, you'll also find cutting-edge dining establishments, a rich culture and fashionable shops in its bohemian neighborhoods. And Bason also recommends visiting this exotic destination thanks to its cost-effective flights this year. He points out that in early December, you can book round-trip flights from Atlanta starting at $298.

Last-minute travel can be exciting — a sudden, unexpected chance to go someplace fun, see old friends or spend time with loved ones. But that thrill can fade fast the minute you start looking at costs. Airfare, hotels and rental cars are usually a lot pricier when you book last minute, and choices can be extremely limited.

To avoid getting gouged, you need to put in some extra effort. Here’s how to get the best deal possible on that last-minute trip.

Tips to get the best last-minute travel deals

Search lots of booking sites.

Those multi-search booking engines that promise to check rates every place under the sun all at once — they do. Yet their best rates can differ substantially. Try multiple multi-search engines including Trivago, Expedia, goSeek, Kayak, Hotels.com and any others you’ve had success with in the past.

But don’t stop there. Compare their rates with prices offered directly by the airline, hotel or car rental company. This late in the game, you just can’t know who’s most eager to earn your business. The only way to find out is to check.

Check different hotel dates before booking a flight (and vice versa)

If that big, beautiful beach resort you’ve been drooling over seems unusually expensive, search for slightly different travel dates. A hotel that costs $250 a night from Oct. 1 through Oct. 7 might cost $175 a night from Oct. 2 through Oct. 7, simply because a big convention at the hotel wraps up on Oct. 1.

If your dates are flexible, you’re in a better position to save money. But even if they aren’t, check a few different date ranges to find out whether unknown variables could be affecting your rate.

Check bundle deals

If you’re lucky, packages that include both a hotel room and a flight can offer amazing last-minute travel deals. That’s because of wholesaling, in which large blocks of hotel rooms are purchased or reserved by a company that tries to resell them to you at a profit. If they buy too many, they may start slashing rates at the last minute.

Check the “vacations” or “package deals” option on airline websites, as well as with online travel agencies like Pleasant Holidays, Costco, Travelocity or Orbitz.

Don’t forget about vacation rentals

Sites like VRBO.com and HomeAway.com offer a comprehensive, searchable database of privately owned vacation rentals that might be booked up by the time you’re planning a last-minute trip. But you won’t know until you look. And if they still have openings, private owners may be willing to cut their rates to fill rooms.

» Learn more: Beyond Airbnb — your guide to peer-to-peer travel platforms

Know your airline’s 24-hour cancellation policy

Unless you’re willing to pay a premium, most airfare is nonrefundable. But did you know that “nonrefundable” often doesn’t kick in until 24 hours after you’ve made your purchase? All major U.S. airlines will let you cancel for a full refund within 24 hours (they’re subject to rules from the Department of Transportation, which other booking sites may or may not follow).

Since last-minute travelers are navigating a landscape of wildly fluctuating prices, you might as well check fares one more time 23 hours after you book, just in case you find a better deal.

Don’t assume award redemption rates mirror cash rates

If you’re thinking of using points or miles to avoid a high last-minute fare, check out your options first. The formula airlines use to decide when to make saver-level award seats available is famously opaque. Sometimes the airlines can offer well-priced redemptions when you least expect them — like at the last minute. If you have miles to spend, check cash prices vs. redemption rates; the better option may surprise you.

Look at seating charts, available rooms and car rental options

By the time you’re reserving a last-minute flight, there may be only two seats on the plane: a middle seat for you in row 20 and a middle seat for your travel companion in row 39. You’ll want to know that in advance, and decide whether it’s worth paying extra to sit together on another flight or in an upgraded cabin.

For hotels, regardless of where you book, check the hotel website to see what room categories are still available. If they’re down to just one room type, that means you probably won’t be able to change rooms if you’re unhappy since they’re almost at capacity. You may get a better rate at a property that still has many empty rooms.

Definitely reserve a car as soon as you can. You don’t want to arrive at your destination airport to learn there are no rental cars available. And just because you’re able to make a reservation online doesn’t necessarily mean the car rental company has vehicles available. Call ahead to be sure, and ask about any active discounts.

Peruse restaurant and activity reservations online

If you’re headed to a ski resort, theme park, spring break hot spot or other likely crowded destination, restaurants could be booked weeks in advance. If you envision a sit-down meal or two, take a quick peek at OpenTable or Yelp Reservations to make sure you’re not left wandering around hungry. You can also check the availability of many tours, spas and activities online by playing with their reservations tool to select various dates.

Get to know your credit card’s travel concierge

If you have a travel rewards card, you may have a personal travel assistant right in your wallet. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , The Platinum Card® from American Express , the Citi Prestige® Card and Mastercards with the World Elite logo come with complimentary 24-hour concierge service. Terms apply.

This means real humans are standing by to help you find everything from hotel rooms to Broadway tickets. When better to tap their expertise than when you’re looking for last-minute deals? If you’re not sure exactly what the concierge can do, they can help you with that too — just ask.

Get your house in order

In the scramble to find last-minute deals, don’t forget all the other things you must do to get out the door fast. Make sure the dog walker is in town. Put a vacation hold on your mail delivery. Get your prescriptions filled and load the kids’ devices with books, games and in-flight entertainment.

We recommend making a list of every task you need to complete, to make sure you’re not boarding a plane and wondering if you remembered to pack your reading glasses or unlock the gate for the landscaper.

Last-minute travel deals, recapped

When looking for vacation deals at the last minute, make sure to review your options, use the resources available and remain flexible. But bbove all, have fun. Last-minute travel can be a great adventure when you’re doing your best to both save money and experience something new.

How can i get cheap hotels in st. petersburg, best tips to find a cheap hotel in st. petersburg.

  • If you're looking to travel to St. Petersburg on a budget , you'll be happy to know that you can find hotels for as low as $116. Of course, that price is affected by amenities, star rating, and even the time of year you visit. At most, hotel prices can be as high as $146. Staying a short amount of time in St. Petersburg is an effective way to reduce hotel costs.
  • When you cut your vacation down to just a few days, you don't have to worry as much about hotel prices since you don't have that many nights to stay. For budget hotels in St. Petersburg, 3 to 4 days should be all the nights you need. That's generally enough to enjoy the city's top attractions, though there's certainly enough to do to warrant a week-long trip.
  • When booking cheap hotel rooms in St. Petersburg, it's typically best to book about 3 weeks in advance. Book further in advance than that and you could be paying too much for your room, as hotels will often overestimate future demand. However, if you wait too long, you might find that the hotel has been completely booked.
  • When you utilize search filters on Expedia, you'll be able to narrow down your results in a flash. These search filters cover a wide variety of factors you may be interested in when it comes to finding a cheap hotel in St. Petersburg, including amenities such as Free Breakfast, 2-star rating , or proximity to local attractions. You can even set filters for price limits to ensure that all the displayed results are within your budget.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker searching for new adventure or looking to make new, lasting memories with your loved ones, Delaware has plenty to offer for road trips, from last-minute vacations to weekend getaways.

A full list of campgrounds in the First State can be found at the Visit Delaware website.

If you're going solo...

And if you're just passing through...

For those just stopping by on their way to their next great adventure, there’s still a few roadside attractions worth seeing, like the Cannonball House in Lewes, the Futuro House in Milton or Miles the Monster at the Dover Downs International Speedway.

Last-minute summer travelers are finding the best deals in years

Held off on taking a summer vacation? You may still be able to squeeze in one on the cheap.

Record numbers of travelers have been flooding airports since the pandemic, but U.S. airlines now face a surplus of empty seats after racing to add capacity. Many are slashing prices to fill them, making bargain flights more readily available than they have been in years, travel agents and industry experts say.

Summer Daily Life In Athens

“Deals are easier to find this summer since prices are already so low,” said Hayley Berg, lead economist at the travel booking site Hopper.

Flights overall were at least 5% cheaper as of June than the year before, government inflation data shows. Hopper estimated domestic airfares for August are down about 6% since a year ago, and it flagged supercheap domestic round-trip deals this month — like $69 for Chicago to Baltimore and $82 for New York to Nashville.

And it’s not just airfares — costs are cooling off for car rentals and hotel rooms too. They were down roughly 6% and 3% year over year, respectively, in the federal data and are now about flat in most cities on Priceline.

For clients with a little flexibility in their travel dates, I’ve been able to get very low airfare for last-minute trips.

Ashley D’Aristotile, owner of Flyaway Travel

The discounts expand the map for late-season travelers and coincide with a broader value push this summer . Restaurant chains from McDonald’s to P.F. Chang’s are dangling promotions to hang on to frugal customers. The gambit is largely working , with major retailers’ recent sales helping prop up consumer spending and the economy as a whole .

Vacation-planning procrastinators are having better luck this year.

On July 26, Debra Banton, 61, and her 26-year-old daughter Rachel booked a trip overseas departing in two weeks.

“We usually plan way in advance, never last minute,” said Banton, who lives in Charleston, South Carolina. But Rachel works full time while attending school, leaving little down time, and since she’s never been to Europe and is getting married next May, they figured now’s their best shot.

“With just four weeks’ planning time, I was able to secure the last few rooms at some fabulous resorts in Greece and get them a great deal on business-class air to Athens,” said Kimberly Hilliard, their Annapolis, Maryland-based travel adviser with Front Porch Travel.

While prices typically come down heading into the fall, the current end-of-summer season is a “unique window” for travelers who haven’t booked far in advance, said Jesse Neugarten, the CEO and founder of Dollar Flight Club.

The flight alert site said the average international airfare from the U.S. over the next three months is $401, and the average domestic flight costs $212 — collectively down an average of 29% from the same period a year ago.

“For clients with a little flexibility in their travel dates, I’ve been able to get very low airfare for last-minute trips,” said Ashley D’Aristotile, the owner of Orlando, Florida-based Flyaway Travel.

Lousson Smith, a flight expert at the travel site Going, agrees: “At this point in the summer, if you’re flexible, you can find something really nice under $150 nonstop from major markets, but anything under $200 this late in the game is a decent deal.”

While the costs of U.S. flights to Europe soared during the post-pandemic travel boom, Hopper estimates international airfares have fallen 9% since last summer. Round trips from Boston to Dublin, for example, have been going for as low as $415 this month, Hopper said, and there are $461 options between Chicago and Paris.

Domestically, the Southeast is seeing some of the best bargains, according to Priceline, with both Miami and Nashville making its “most affordable” list for August.

Travelers make their way through the airport

“For families who still have several weeks before school officially begins, you can take advantage of lower prices in some Southern states like Florida and Tennessee,” said Christina Bennett, a consumer travel expert at Priceline.

When it comes to accommodations, “markets and individual hotels will be looking to fill their rooms by offering last-minute deals and discounts,” said Jan Freitag, national director of hospitality analytics for CoStar Group, a real estate data firm.

“In general and on average, room rates are not up a whole lot,” and occupancy is down in some cities, he said. The average daily room rate in June was up just 1.5% year over year — lower than the overall inflation rate of 3% — and ticked down even further, to a 1.3% annual increase in the last week of July, CoStar data shows.

The availability seems unusual for this time of year … and many hotels are throwing in extras.

Chirag Panchal, founder of Ensuite Collection

But bargain hunters will need to be nimble, Freitag said: “A deal may be offered on Wednesday for that Saturday, so the question is: What is your appetite for booking ahead or booking last minute?”

Chirag Panchal, founder of the Dallas-based travel company Ensuite Collection, said that type of appetite has been strong lately.

“The availability seems unusual for this time of year, and I’ve been receiving a lot more last-minute travel requests than usual,” he said. “We’re seeing great availability in places like Colorado and New York City, and many hotels are throwing in extras such as complimentary breakfast, room upgrades, special amenities for kids and extra nights for free.”

If you’re ready to go and have a few destinations in mind, experts suggest signing up for one of the free fare-alert services offered by various travel platforms so you can act fast. Or use a tool like Google Flights to search for the cheapest destinations from your nearest airport. And while travel agents charge their own fees, many get access to reduced fares and packages that may not be available on booking sites.

But don’t worry if you can’t sneak in a summer vacation before August wraps. After all, the season doesn’t officially end until three weeks after Labor Day, and many travel promotions look set to continue.

“I’m finding quite a few locations offering discounted packages moving into September,” said Jennifer Byrne, CEO of the Tropical Travelers, an agency in Malvern, Pennsylvania.
