Lake Placid

City Guide: Lake Placid

Lake Placid is one of the most established and enjoyable winter playgrounds in the United States, with a walkable downtown where you’re never far from nature. Home to two Winter Olympics games in 1932 and 1980—which included the dramatic U.S. hockey victory over the Soviet Union, known as “The Miracle on Ice”—this alpine village remains a magnet for world-class athletes today. Lake Placid also hosted the 2023 FISU World University Winter Games , the largest global winter multi-sports event for student-athletes, at Olympic facilities including Whiteface Mountain , the Olympic Oval, and the Olympic Jumping Complex .

An enchanting place any time of year, Lake Placid also shines in spring, summer, and autumn, with scenic hiking , Main Street shopping and dining , brilliant fall foliage , and easy access to the breathtaking, unspoiled beauty of Adirondack Park —6.1 million acres of trails, rivers, streams, wildlife habitat, and more.

The "Miracle on Ice" happened at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics when the underdog US men's ice hockey team won the gold medal in a thrilling win against the Soviet Union. Learn all about the victory at the Olympic Center and Museum .

The Adirondack Park 's 6-million-acre area is larger than the areas of Yellowstone, the Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Parks combined.

Adirondack  Great Camps  (pictured) were designed to blend into their natural surroundings, offering rustic yet luxurious retreats for the Gilded Age elite. Today, they dot the northern landscape, offering windows into the wealth and charm of Adirondack Rustic. Many of these structures are still privately owned, but a few are open to the public through professional guided tours.

Lake Placid is a Dream Winter Vacation Destination Hidden in the Adirondacks

Five hours from New York City, this former Olympic village offers world-class alpine activities.

lake placid travel

An elite summer playground in the Gilded Age, Lake Placid became renowned for winter sports, hosting both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Today, skiers come from all over the East Coast to explore the trails of Whiteface Mountain .

"Lake Placid is an idyllic winter sports town, in much the same tradition as St. Moritz, Chamonix, and other iconic alpine resorts," says two-time Olympic champion and Lake Placid native Andrew Weibrecht . "As someone who grew up here and then competed all around the world, there are few places that can match the enthusiasm Lake Placid has for winter sports."

In the 19th century, families like the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Carnegies built their summer homes on the many lakes in the Adirondacks. Known as Great Camps , these sprawling compounds were designed to entertain their upper-class guests. While some are still private, others are open for tours and even overnight stays.

Lake Placid continues to radiate with the energy, reinforced by Olympic fervor, the magic of the cold mountains, and the local spirit. Here's everything you need to know to plan a ski getaway to Lake Placid this winter.

  • A two-time host of the Winter Olympics
  • Home to the biggest vertical drop on the East Coast (3,430 feet) at Whiteface Mountain
  • The opportunity to try bobsledding on a real track

The ski season in Lake Placid, and around the Adirondacks , typically starts at the end of November when temperatures begin to drop below freezing, and can sometimes extend into mid-April. It usually starts snowing in December, but it's a toss-up between January and February if you're trying to pinpoint the month with the best snow conditions. The mountain is known to get particularly icy, so always check in with local sources about day-to-day conditions. Lake Placid is an extremely popular weekend destination for East Coast city-dwellers, so if you can swing it, it's much better to visit on a weekday.

In December, you can usher in the holiday season during the Holiday Village Stroll . This weekend event includes story time for kids and skate sessions, but everyone looks forward most to Sunday, when skiers don their Santa suits and ride down the mountain in full festive style.

Where to Stay

Lake placid stagecoach inn.

Lean into the history of the region with a stay at the oldest hotel in town. The Lake Placid Stagecoach Inn is a boutique bed-and-breakfast with a handful of wood-paneled suites featuring forest motifs and flannel blankets as well as a classic Adirondack cabin that can accommodate up to four guests.

Mirror Lake Inn

About a half-hour from Whiteface, Mirror Lake Inn has over a century of stories to tell and has been family-owned since 1924. Guests are welcomed with a roaring fireplace in the lobby and spacious rooms decked out in an elegant, woodland-inspired style. The hotel also boasts two of the best restaurants in town: The View Restaurant for fine dining and the more casual Cottage Restaurant and Cafe.

Whiteface Lodge

Hidden in the woods just past Lake Placid, Whiteface Lodge offers a rustic-inspired luxury getaway with practically every amenity you can imagine. In addition to a spa and a heated outdoor pool, there's a 56-seat movie theater, a two-lane bowling alley, and an ice skating rink — plus a nightly campfire.

Where to Eat

Courtesy of Salt of the Earth Bistro

Kanu at Whiteface Lodge is one of the region's premier dining destinations. Dishes are both elegant and hearty, such as a warm brie starter with rosemary-infused maple syrup and a black truffle pasta. The dining room exudes classic grand lodge maximalism, with big windows that show off the views.

The View Restaurant

Speaking of views, Mirror Lake Inn is home to The View Restaurant , a legendary fine-dining establishment that emphasizes local ingredients and offers a spectacular lake vista. It's Lake Placid's only AAA Four Diamond Restaurant and reservations are required. During the busy season, the breakfast buffet is open to non-guests so you can try to get a table then if lunch and dinner are full.

Salt of the Earth Bistro

Salt of the Earth Bistro is another local favorite. With just nine tables, the atmosphere is intimate and incredibly romantic. Dishes are internationally inspired, so you can try everything from Portuguese cod to something closer to home like New York Strip steak. Unsurprisingly, advance reservations are recommended during peak season.

Where to Après-ski

Cloudspin bar & grill.

The Cloudspin Bar & Grill is your best bet if you're looking for a few drinks close to the slopes. This classic après spot offers a party vibe and pub-food classics like burgers, wings, and macaroni and cheese.

Smoke Signals

When you want to offset the drinks with some rib-sticking fare, Smoke Signals back in Lake Placid has plenty of finger-licking favorites to satisfy your hunger. In addition to local brews and ciders on draft, the modern BBQ joint offers signature and seasonal cocktails.

Lake Placid Pub & Brewery

Who can turn down a good beer flight after a day of skiing? At the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery , you can try the award-winning microbrews alongside other quality drafts. There's also a menu packed with comfort food like pretzel bites and pizza alongside healthy options like avocado hummus and varied salad options.

Off-mountain Activities

The Lake Placid Bobsled Experience at Mt. Van Hoevenberg offers the chance to try out this niche Olympic sport on a nearly mile-long track. For something more tame, ride the Cliffside Coaster or take a few spins around the rink at the ice skating center. If you want to stay outdoors, set off on a horseback ride through the snow-covered countryside from Emerald Springs Ranch , or enjoy a dog-sled ride on frozen Mirror Lake when conditions allow. You can also immerse yourself in the landscape at The Wild Center . Set in 115 acres, this innovative science museum features a network of suspended walkways with stops that include a giant replica eagle's nest and "spider web."

A charming place to wander, downtown Lake Placid has plenty of spa and shopping options to keep you busy. Other activities include candlemaking workshops at Pure Placid and classic movie screenings at the historic Palace Theatre .

How to Ride

Limited season passes (includes blackout dates) at Whiteface start at $769, but you can also buy the Full SKI3 Pass (no blackout dates), which also gets you access to Gore Mountain and Belleayre Mountain ski resorts. This pass offers one price for adults ages 30 to 69 (starting at $1,019) and another for twentysomethings (from $739). There are also discounts for children, teens, and seniors. One-day lift tickets for adults start at $105 if purchased in advance online. For something between a season pass and a day ticket, you could also buy the SKI3 Frequent Skier Card , which gets you 50 percent off lift tickets on weekdays and 25 percent off on weekends at all three resorts.

At Whiteface, you can rent from the Rossignol Experience Center , but be sure to reserve your gear before you arrive. Packages range from one to five days. If you want to pick up your gear while you're in Lake Placid, you may be able to find better deals. Shops in town include High Peaks Cyclery Mountain Adventures , Cunningham's Ski Barn , and Lake Placid Ski and Board .

Skiing and Snowboarding Info

Home to the biggest vertical drop in the East at 3,430 feet, Whiteface has a good variety of terrain for all levels across the resort's 94 trails and 299 skiable acres: 22 percent for beginners, 41 percent for intermediate, and 37 percent for experts. There is one gondola that can carry up to eight people at a time in addition to 10 regular lifts and two conveyor lifts. At 2.1 miles, the Wilmington Trail on Lookout Mountain is the longest run. Other popular cold-weather activities near Lake Placid include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at Mt. Van Hoevenberg .

Programming

Whiteface offers ski and snowboard schools for different age groups and all skill levels. Reservations are required for group lessons, which mix adults and teenagers. The resort also offers adaptive skiing lessons, available for skiers of all ages. Adaptive equipment like sit skis are included, but you will need to inquire ahead of time.

Lake Placid is a fantastic destination and it’s no wonder travelers from all over the US (and the world) make their way to the Adirondacks to explore the town and the region!

I went to Lake Placid as a kid, and saw the “Olympic stuff,” and went back as an adult with Dan, calling all the shots for what we wanted our trip to look like. I wanted great weather (we got it), lots of hiking, gorgeous mountain views and the charm of Lake Placid and nearby Saranac Lake.

If you’ve got some time on your hands for the drive, or if you’re already vacationing through the Catskills or Hudson Valley , save some time for the Adirondacks . There’s no better place to stay than Lake Placid, because if you do run into some rain, snow or unbearable heat, there’s a plethora of things to do like shop, dine and see the Olympic sights.

Here’s our guide of the best things to do, places to eat and drink (breweries!) and our favorite hikes that made the cut during our stay. We hope you enjoy Lake Placid on your next trip!

Lake Placid sticker in New York.

Where to Hike

Hiking was the main reason we came to Lake Placid and the Adirondacks. If you know me, you can be sure I did my research beforehand, as I wanted hikes with great views, and ones that also weren’t too long (or too short). I mostly honed in on hikes that were marked “moderate” for difficulty.

I spent hours looking at trails, mapping them out, and making lists of the lengths of trails and how hard they were. I built our trip itinerary based on options for getting rained out, and also being on the trails at pretty hours of the day (morning, and afternoon golden hour).

Did my work pay off? I think so, as we were able to do four hikes and one bog walk, and the bonus nature walk at Brewster Peninsula. Below, you can see all the photos and decide which hiking spots near Lake Placid you’d like to visit when you arrive.

And for more photos in our gallery pages, check out our entire album of Adirondack Mountain hike photos .

As a friendly reminder, when hiking in the Adirondacks, please LNT (”Leave no trace”), meaning leave no human trace that you were in the beautiful nature. If you bring snack bars or go to the bathroom, bring all trash down with you to the bottom of the mountain to dispose! There’s more about the 7 outdoor ethics to check out at LNT.org .

Mount Jo (located in North Elba, NY) isn’t too long of a climb, but we certainly worked up half a sweat getting from bottom to top. When you get to the top, you’re met with nice views of the surrounding mountains and there’s quite a few directions to look in!

A couple conquer Lake Placid's majestic mountain.

Going down, we took the rockier and steeper route for a change of pace, but you can go back down the exact way you came as well. It’s a “loop trail,” so you have choices when starting, and when descending.

Find the trailhead here.

Check out more information like how to get there, on AllTrails . When you’re there, be sure to have a look at Heart Lake, which is a serene little body of water, near the parking.

And here’s a photo of Heart Lake (it’s very sweet <3).

A man sits on a bench next to a lake in Lake Placid.

Baker Mountain Trailhead

Baker Mountain is a 2.5-mile adventurous hike located right near the town of Saranac Lake, which we drove to, to spend the day at. I call it ‘adventurous’ because it falls within the ‘moderate’ level of hiking, meaning you may do some huffing and puffing on the uphill climbs.

At the top, it’s pretty leafy (if you go between spring and autumn). You can see down to the town, and additional mountain views. We even saw someone set up a hammock at the top to just chill. That’s a real idea!

The trail is out-and-back, so you’ll come down the way you came. Take note though, that at the top, the trail itself gets a little murky, so look for any markers you can.

Here’s some information at the Saranac Lake town website , with directions included.

A man strolling through a wooded area near Lake Placid in New York.

Cobble Lookout

Cobble Lookout is an excellent photo op for photographers and really, anyone into a good vacation photo. Technically, the mountain is located in Wilmington, NY. I enjoyed this hike a lot!

After a semi-steep climb, you’re met with an expanse of views at the top, and very little in your way of seeing miles and miles into the landscape. You can pop down and sit for a few minutes on the rocky gravel area.

A person standing on top of a rocky hill in Lake Placid, New York.

Going in autumn was quite a treat for us, as, even though we were past the peak week of foliage, we got a rainbow of leaf hues in the distance from trees at varying degrees of their color-changing. This hike is great in all seasons except winter, when it would be snowy and not so safe. Here’s more information on AllTrails .

Mount Van Hoevenberg

Mount Van Hoevenberg is an out-and-back trail that was a really nice morning hike for us. It starts in a wooded path that’s flat, and after crossing an area reminiscent of a bog, you start the steep ascent.

Dead trees in Lake Placid, New York.

The trail is about 4 miles long, so keep that in mind if you’re pressed for time. It’ll be around 2 miles (and will take an hour) to get to those nice views up top.

At the top, be prepared for gorgeous sweeping views of the Adirondacks. Have the camera ready!

There’s more information on the AllTrails website for Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Brewster Peninsula Walking Paths

Hidden gem alert: we hadn’t even known these beautiful walking paths existed until I went into Google Maps looking for west-facing sunset locations where we could take photos. What we found was a pleasant surprise, from quiet trails (mostly flat) to these pretty boardwalks across water.

It seems that these walking paths are a local secret!

A woman standing on a wooden bridge in Lake Placid.

These paths are marked on Google Maps as “Peninsula Trails,” and you can find the exact location here.

A woman walks across a wooden bridge in the woods of Lake Placid.

Bloomingdale Bog

Bloomingdale Bog is off to the northwest of Saranac Lake, and you can find the location here. We chose to try it out because it is an easy and flat walk, and we hoped we’d get to see some nature.

The only thing to note is that if there have been recent rains, the dirt paths retain water, and we got stopped by mud puddles about 30 minutes in, so we had to turn around. We did see other visitors, as well as some locals with their dogs.

Check out this unique area on AllTrails .

A forest with yellow trees and a pond in Lake Placid.

Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface Mountain is New York’s fifth-highest mountain top and to get there, it’s most popular to drive up, along the Whiteface Memorial Highway. You can also do the gondola ride, or ski lift in winter.

There’s hiking for all levels, and an entire set of outdoorsy activities you can do in the Whiteface immediate area. Check out the website here, and if you’re a hiking expert (we really mean this) and you’d like to hike the mountain, it’s a 9.5-mile trail and not for the faint of heart.

Details are on AllTrails .

More trails in the Lake Placid & Saranac Lake Region

There are so many more hiking trails that you can do, whether you’re at the expert level or hiking with kids and a family. These hikes just scraping the surface!

A few hikes that were on my list that we didn’t have time for included Cascade Mountain, Mount Arab, Haystack Mountain, Hurricane Mountain, Goodnow Mountain, Buck Mountain, Esther Mountain and Ampersand Mountain.

You truly can’t go wrong with whichever trails you choose. We got all our ideas for hiking on AllTrails , where you can filter by level (hard, moderate, easy), length and more. Plus, a list like this one has trails with great views.

Things to do

There’s lots to do in Lake Placid and nearby Saranac Lake, for every type of traveler. For us, we wanted to spend all our time outdoors, so we focused on hikes, viewpoints, the lake in the town and outdoor activities like running and walking.

For families and kids, as well as sports and Olympic Games enthusiasts, you’ll have to visit all the Olympic legacy sites from the Lake Placid Olympic Games! We list those here.

Dan Stein’s viewpoint

Recommended to us by our friend and expert hiker-photographer Dan Stein , this simple viewpoint as you approach Lake Placid is kind of like a cool introduction of what’s to come. While to some it may be nothing special, we thought it was a nice juxtaposition of a flat field with mountains right in the backdrop.

The sky over Lake Placid is cloudy.

Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake is the central lake of the Lake Placid town (funny enough, it’s not “Lake Placid”). We took time to walk and go running all the way around Mirror Lake, past where the town ends at the north section. If you continue to go all the way around, you’ll pass a residential area that turns back into the area with hotels toward the southern end.

There are some very pretty hotels toward the north side, where it’s quieter and less bustling. If you want to catch the sunset, it’s nice to see from anywhere, but being on the west side of the lake will let you see the sun touch on the mountains and make them glimmer.

If you’re interested in running or walking around the lake, note that it’s 2.7 miles from start to finish. Here are some more running route ideas near Lake Placid at Lakeplacid.com .

Mid’s Park on Main Street

If you want to experience Mirror Lake in Lake Placid and sit back in an Adirondack chair (or have a picnic), opt for Mid’s Park , right downtown on Main Street. This little park is an inlet of Main Street with a grassy area down some stairs, so that you can be right up at the lake’s surface. We liked watching the sun go down here, and taking some photos at the water.

Lake Placid Olympic Center Sites

Lake Placid hosted the winter Olympics in 1980, and when you visit, you can get a taste of what that was like with the Olympic Center Sites. Here are a few ways to experience the magic of the Olympic Games close to home!

Lake Placid Olympic Center & Lake Placid Olympic Museum

First, head to the website of the Lake Placid Olympic Center and decide what you’d like to see on your trip. Check to determine if you’ll be in town for something like the Lake Placid Figure Skating Championships, or another type of seasonal event that allows the general public to witness.

Other events include the Lake Placid Ice Dancing championships and the Miracle on Ice Fantasy Camp. There’s more on events at the event page .

To go more in depth with learning about the Lake Placid Olympic legacy, head to the Lake Placid Olympic Museum! The website is here , and has innovative displays, interactive exhibits and exciting things for kids to see.

Ski Jumping Complex

Have you ever been to a Ski Jump complex? Now’s your chance, when you’re in Lake Placid checking out the Olympic Games sites. This incredible and unique place is for anyone who wants to witness the sheer size of a ski jump for themselves, because most of the world only sees this type of thing on TV!

At the website , you can preview the options for when you visit, starting with the Skyride. There’s also the Sky Flyer experience, which replicates the thrill of a ski jump (it’s a zipline).

John Brown Farm State Historic Site

While this may seem random compared to the other sites listed, we’re including it because some people really like history! Also, it’s a nice spot for photography.

This New York state historic site is the home of abolitionist John Brown and it’s free to visit. See more information here, at the NY Parks website .

Where to eat and drink

Lake Placid has a lot of dining options for every budget, from steakhouses and American grills to more chilled-out breweries, pubs, cafes and coffeeshops. Oh, did someone say ice cream?

Lake Placid Pub and Brewery

This was the first brewery we checked out, and we tried a cider, beer and a big pretzel! It’s a big place located at the southern end of Mirror Lake, and in addition to fresh beer on tap, they have “beer gear” at the store. Here’s the website .

Lisa G’s was recommended to us by locals and unfortunately it was closed Tuesday and Wednesday when we wanted to go, but the good news is that it’s open the rest of the week! This restaurant serves up modern American fare like sandwiches, pizza, wings and fun appetizers.

Origin Coffee Co.

This highly-rated coffeeshop is also at the south end of the lake. Here, you’ll find specialty coffee and breakfast and brunch all day! There’s also a Saranac Lake location, so if you day trip there, be sure to say hi.

Soulshine Bagel

This is the spot for bagels in town and it’s open every day of the week starting at 7am!

The Coffee Bar

More coffee here, but this time with a beautiful back porch view on Mirror Lake. The shop boasts 10,000 visitors per year and has a website you can check out.

Smoke Signals

This restaurant serves BBQ right on Mirror Lake, and they have beer on tap and cocktails, too. You can drool over the website before you plan to visit for a meal.

Emma’s Lake Placid Creamery

This locally-famous 50s-themed ice cream parlor is a favorite for locals and visitors. Emma’s is located right on Main Street as well, and there are 16 hard ice cream flavors, some of which are seasonal. Here’s their website .

Big Slide Brewery & Public House

This brewery is the home of “New York’s Best Double IPA” and they host 10 beers on tap, food, Sunday brunch and a brewery store. Hungry? There’s a farm-to-table food menu .

Where to shop

Lake Placid is a vacationer’s heaven for shopping! From specialty jewelry and chocolate to outdoors equipment and souvenirs, there’s lots to see in terms of cool shops and boutiques if you have to spend a rainy, hot or cold day in town.

Life is Good

With its excellent location right on Main Street, this location of Life is Good is the spot for sweatshirts, bags, T-shirts, hats and more, with a down-to-earth vibe and some specialty items that have the Lake Placid signature look.

Eastern Mountain Sports

This outpost of EMS , also on Main Street, sells menswear, womenswear, footwear and camping and hiking gear (you know, in case you forgot any when you packed your car!).

Bass Factory Outlet

The Bass brand is known for its signature high-quality loafers and “Weejuns,” and they have apparel, sneakers and heels, too. This outlet shop is located on Main Street.

Adirondack Chocolates

With its raving reviews, you know this is the best chocolate place to shop at in town! Everything is chocolately and delicious, and the store sells gift baskets as well. This one’s on Main Street, too.

Beglin’s Lake Placid Jewelry

The fun fact about Beglin’s Lake Placid Jewelry is that when I passed by, I texted my friend who now has this last name from marrying her husband, and it turns out that it’s a relative who owns the company. Check out Beglin’s, for all types of fine jewelry including watches and rings, and see the website here .

Hannaford Supermarket

A little bit outside town and on the way to the Brewster Peninsula Trails we mentioned above, is Hannaford Supermarket, located at 45 Hadjis Way, Lake Placid, NY! I’m not saying this is an epic supermarket by any means, but chances are that during your trip, you may want to go to a supermarket to pick up more hiking snacks like fruit, veggies, trail mix or any of our favorite road trip snacks .

If you continue down Saranac Avenue, there is also a Price Chopper supermarket at 1930 Saranac Ave, Lake Placid, NY.

Where to Stay

We booked our hotels through some miles and travel points for this trip (hooray travel hacking !) and wound up with these hotels we’d like to recommend to you. When booking your hotel or Airbnb, map it out and determine if you’d like to be walking distance to town (which saves you the headache of parking, especially in high season).

Courtyard by Marriott Lake Placid

Located slightly to the southern end of town and not as walkable to downtown, the Courtyard by Marriott was a good hotel to stay at because it had all the amenities we needed. Mostly, we used our mini fridge a ton because of all the groceries we bought and meals-on-the-go we prepped for our hikes.

There’s a pool, and daily breakfast. Plus, the staff was very nice! The hotel is located at 5920 Cascade Rd, Lake Placid, NY 12946.

Crowne Plaza Resort Lake Placid

You’ll find the Crowne Plaza Resort a dab dated like we did, but there’s not much to complain about when you sit in an Adirondack chair at the top of the hill outside the dining area and look down on the town. Maybe being a bit dated is part of the retro 80s charm of Lake Placid itself.

Two chairs on a Lake Placid patio overlooking a lake and mountains in New York.

We thought staying at the Crowne Plaza was good value, even with its great location right near the main strip of action in town. We were happy with our choice to stay there (and I hadn’t stayed at a Crowne Plaza in years upon years!). We had a good night’s rest each night, and I liked being a quick walking distance to Main Street and Mirror Lake.

The hotel address is 101 Olympic Dr, Lake Placid, NY 12946.

Mirror Lake Inn

As a note, we didn’t stay here, but the great reviews speak for themselves. This four-star hotel has beautiful views of the Adirondack Mountains and is located right on Mirror Lake. It has on-site dining and a spa, and the whole place looks like it’s the set of a movie.

You can find it at 77 Mirror Lake Dr, Lake Placid, NY 12946.

How to Get to Lake Placid

We drove to Lake Placid from NYC , but it’s recommended to fly into Plattsburgh if you need to fly from somewhere not too far like Washington, DC. Only small planes can fly into the very nearby Lake Placid Airport.

I thought driving up was fun, because as we got more and more north from the NYC area, the roads got prettier, the Adirondack mountain views were nice and I could smell how fresh the air was when I rolled down my windows!

Another idea for getting to Lake Placid is taking an Amtrak train! You can do this from NYC, Albany and Montreal.

The ultimate 4 day lake placid itinerary (all season).

lake placid travel

Lake Placid is famously known as the two-time Olympic host city, years 1932 and 1980. However, there is so much more to it. When Covid hit and cancelled all our 2020 travel plans, we pivoted and booked a spontaneous trip up to Lake Placid. We didn’t plan much before getting to Lake Placid, but boy were we blown away! We are firmly in the camp that adores Lake Placid. Keep reading below to see what we got up to in Lake Placid and surrounding areas, and our suggested  4 Day Lake Placid Itinerary !

Mirror Lake (Lake Placid)

Table of Contents

Where To Stay in Lake Placid

We opted to stay in an Airbnb cabin in Jay, NY, which was a short (30 mins) and very scenic drive from Lake Placid. We opted for this as we needed down time to work and simply relax in a space bigger than our NYC shoebox. This being said, there are many hotel and airbnb options within Lake Placid to choose from as well. The Crowne Plaza and Mirror Lake Inn looked unbelievable, albeit expensive!

We recommend deciding the purpose of your trip and choosing accommodations based off of this. For those planning to ski Whiteface Mountain, Lake Placid or Airbnb’s in Wilmington will do well. If you’re here for summer sun and lake time, we recommend staying on Mirror Lake. If you’re like us and visit during the “in-between” seasons, places like Jay will you provide you a lot more value for your money and are conveniently located beside many hikes.

What to do in Lake Placid

Where do we even begin? From the mountains, to the lakes, to the quaint downtown, we promise you will not fall short for what to do when filling your Lake Placid itinerary! Of course everything is seasonally dependent, so we will go over what we did in late November.

Main Street: Enjoy all the shops and restaurants Main Street has to offer. This can take as little or as long as you prefer. We are not huge browsers (and Colin is far from a shopper) so we kept it short and sweet.

The Winter Olympic Museum: This is such a fun museum to check out. The museum does a great job of showing the Olympics over the years and highlighting the historic moments of the 1980s games in Lake Placid. You can even see inside Herb Brooks Arena where the famous “Miracle on Ice” Gold Medal was won by USA’s Ice Hockey Team. We recommend budgeting an hour total for all exhibits.

Mirror Lake: Mirror Lake has a walking path that goes around the lake, ending on Main Street. The pathway is 2.6 miles and accessible for all. Mirror Lake feels like a central fixture for the town, filled with kayakers and swimmers in the summer with skaters and sled riders in the winter.

Whiteface Mountain: In the winter this is a ski resort, but in the summer you can hike to the summit. If you want to skip the hiking you can take a gondola to the top or take a road up. The road (Veterans Memorial Highway) takes you right to the top with an elevator to make the summit accessible for all. There truly is something for everyone!

Lake Placid Downtown

Hiking near Lake Placid

Any lake placid itinerary must contain some hiking, as there is so much in the area that varies in difficulty. We opted for Indian Head and Mount Jo. Indian Head is an 11 mile trek with incredible summit views. A nice bonus is Rainbow Falls that you can stop at to fulfill everyone’s waterfall chasing dreams. Mount Jo is a 3 mile round trip hike to more beautiful summit views. If you are interested in hiking these, check out our Indian Head and Rainbow Falls post or Mount Jo  post.

Other more accessible hikes include:

Cobble Lookout: This lookout trail is an easy 2.4 mile, well trafficked, trail. The elevation gain is 240 ft and is perfect for a family hike.

Gorge River Trail: This is a paved and accessible trail that takes you down to see the Gorge River and the waterfall. You pay to enter, but has amazing reviews saying the fee is well worth it.

Where to Eat in Lake Placid

Finally, your Lake Placid itinerary has to take advantage of the many unique restaurants in the area. While we spent most of our time cooking in our Airbnb, but we did sneak out for some yummy meals.

The Breakfast Club: In our opinion this is a must. The food is great, and the maple balsamic vinaigrette is incredible! Additionally, the views are amazing. With the back half of the restaurant over Mirror Lake, it makes for a picturesque lunch.

Big Slide Brewery : The Lake Placid area is home to several breweries to be tried. Just outside of Lake Placid is Big Slide Brewery, where you can sample a flight of local beers. The food is also farm-to-table and we had to stop ourselves from ordering the whole menu!

Old Mountain Coffee Company: This coffee house is located in the town of Keene, just 20 minutes south of Lake Placid. If this is too far, many restaurants along Main Street also sell their coffee. We were here around Christmas and the specialty drinks were delicious.

One thing to note is that outside of Lake Placid we found that several places to eat or visit were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Plan accordingly if you are here for the week.

The Breakfast Club (Lake Placid)

4-Day Lake Placid Itinerary

  • Enjoy a breakfast and the Breakfast Club or Saranac Sourdough
  • Walk around downtown, explore the shops
  • Walk around Mirror Lake
  • Visit the Olympic Museum
  • Have dinner in town (we’ve heard great things about Laker Placid Pub & Brewery)
  • Grab a quick bite to eat
  • Head out to Indian Head for a hiking day
  • stop at Old Mountain Coffee House on your way home for a pick-me-up
  • Relax in the evening — if you have a hot tub, even better!
  • Have a leisurely morning
  • Head out to Mount Jo for an early morning hike
  • Explore around Heart Lake after the hike
  • Head to Big Slide Brewery for lunch and try a flight of local beer
  • If you are up for more hiking, head to Cobble Lookout or High Falls Gorge
  • Bonus:  Head down to Mirror Lake for some sunset photos
  • Pack up and enjoy a final breakfast at your favorite spot in town
  • Head up Whiteface Mountain for a final look around at the incredible Adirondacks
  • Give yourself lots of time to make the journey home
  • Bonus : Stop in Saratoga Springs on your way!

Bonus Stop: Saratoga Springs

We drove up from NYC, so we opted to stop in Saratoga Springs on our way home. Although we planned to have ~2 hours in town, it didn’t quite feel like enough! We strolled along Broadway Street, which is the heart of downtown and filled with plenty of restaurants and shops. Next, we ate lunch at Druthers Brewery and we were not disappointed! Just off of Broadway Street is Congress Park, which is a beautiful park with garden spots. Saratoga Springs is known for their natural mineral springs, some of which can be found in this park. What we didn’t get to explore is their horse racing tract, next time!

Overall, the Adirondacks are a beautiful and must see part of New York State. We highly recommend exploring any time of year, and giving lots of time in your travels to visit the surrounding towns — you may end up extending your trip as a result!

Best Things to Do in Lake Placid, NY

Many know Lake Placid as the home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics . Winter sports is certainly one of its claims to fame and continues to be. But the village of Lake Placid offers so much more to visitors: a beautiful, quaint town surrounding tranquil Mirror Lake, awesome views of majestic Adirondack mountains from anywhere in town plus loads of hiking trails and other fun outdoor recreation options. There’s no shortage of great restaurants and fun shops, too.

A view of a rocky river bed surrounded by trees and a mountain in Lake Placid.

Located in Adirondack Park — a massive 6-million-acre park of public and private land — in upstate New York, Lake Placid is 110 miles from Montreal, 250 miles from Boston, and 280 miles from New York City. It may be a bit of a drive for some, but it’s certainly worth the travel time.

A picture of people kayaking on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid.

A year-round destination , Lake Placid has plenty to keep visitors happy each season. The 10 top things to do in Lake Placid are highlighted below.

#1 Visit the Olympic Museum

Lake Placid Olympic Museum highlights the history of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic games in Lake Placid. You’ll see uniforms, and equipment (skates, helmets, hockey sticks, skating costumes, etc.) along with informational displays providing history and context. Once you’ve completed the museum (allow 30-40 minutes), walk upstairs to see the ice hockey arena where the U.S. team beat the Russian team in the nail-biter semi-final during the 1980 Winter Olympics. There’s also a gift shop on the second level.

A display of Olympic bobsleds, helmets and gear in the Winter Olympic museum in Lake Placid.

When visiting the museum, you’ll learn how the area became known for winter sports. It began in 1895 when Dr. Melvil Dewey, the state’s education secretary and the creator of the Dewey Decimal System, began the Lake Placid Club focusing on outdoor sports. Then in 1916, Henry Uihlein II came to the area for tuberculosis treatment and took an interest in speed skating; the area later hosted the Outdoor Speed Skating Championship. It’s an interesting history and a good place to understand the development of competitive winter sports — and to view the gear used back in those early days. 2634 Main Street, Lake Placid

#2 Visit the Olympic Ski Jump Complex

You can’t miss the Olympic Ski Jump Complex as you enter the village of Lake Placid. The two ski jumps are part of the landscape. Today this is a training center and is open year-round. Visitors can enjoy a photo exhibit of the history of ski jumping in the lodge. Also, there’s a gondola ride up to the base of the 90-meter and 120-meter jumps. Once at that level, there’s a zipline that might tempt some brave souls. Finally, there’s a glass elevator to the top of the 120-meter jump. From the top, you can peer out over the landscape in the enclosed tower; then you can step out onto a ledge to look down on the ski jump itself, imagining the excitement that the ski jumpers have when they’re getting ready for their events.

Back down on the parking lot level, there is a large pool at the base of some smaller ski jumps. This is an area where athletes can practice their aerial feats in the off-season. 5486 Cascade Road, Lake Placid

#3 Visit the Lake Placid Sliding Center

The Lake Placid Sliding Center is the site of the Olympic bobsled, luge and skeleton runs . Visitors are invited on bobsled rides. 220 Bobsled Run Lane, Lake Placid

#4 Take a scenic boat of Lake Placid Lake

Boat tours of Lake Placid (just north of Mirror Lake where the village of Lake Placid sits) are offered several times a day. The rides originate at Lake Placid Marina and Boat Tours and feature pontoon boats with a captain who narrates the ride. You’ll learn some local lore and learn about some of the private homes (“camps”) that dot the lake. You’ll also take in some gorgeous scenery as the surrounding mountains are the backdrop in all directions. If you’re staying on or close to Mirror Lake, you can walk to the marina which is between Lake Placid Lake and Mirror Lake.  24 George & Bliss Lane, Lake Placid

#5 Walk around Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake is actually the lake in the village of Lake Placid. Lake Placid Lake, the body of water, is just north of the town. The walk around the lake is just short of 3 miles, and it’s a leisurely way to enjoy the village. Note that the walk itself is on a sidewalk that rings the lake; in between the sidewalk and the lake are shops, restaurants, a public beach, and private homes. Despite the physical separation from the water, you’ll still have plenty of nice vistas of the lake along your walk.

A view of a boathouse in the foreground and Mirror Lake in the background in Lake Placid village.

#6 Stroll through town

Main Street has a nice variety of shops and restaurants to explore. You’ll find everything from souvenir shops to clothing and home furnishing stores. And you may be tempted by realtors’ offerings (maybe a vacation getaway home here?!) as you pass by their offices.

#7 Take a hike!

There is an abundance of trails in the area offering varying degrees of difficulty. We chose Cobble Trail which is accessed off the loop road around Mirror Lake. If you’re staying on a property by the lake, you could easily walk to the trailhead.

A picture of Cobble Trail along Lake Echo in Lake Placid.

The woodland hike along Cobble Hill Trail offers two trail options (the trail splits) once you get started. The shorter way up (0.8 miles) is steep with some large boulders. The longer way up (1.3 miles) has more even terrain — although there are lots of tree roots and some rocky areas — and you’ll walk along the shore of Echo Lake. The two trail options are marked; once you get to the decision point, you can take the trail to the left for the “easier” hike. Both trails merge near the summit, at 2,300 feet, and you’ll be rewarded with a fabulous view. In the distance, you’ll be able to see the Olympic bobsled track.

There are plenty of other trails in and around Lake Placid. Check online — or ask at your hotel or inn, to find the one that suits you best.

#8 Drive up Whiteface Veteran’s Memorial Highway

Opened in 1936, this 5-mile paved road takes you up Whiteface Mountain — New York’s 5th highest peak at 4,867 feet. Driving up Whiteface Veteran’s Memorial Highway is a must if you want to get your bearings in the Adirondacks and enjoy incredible beauty. There are several spots along the way to pull over and enjoy the vistas; most of these spots also have a picnic table or two. Once you reach the top, park the car and have a look around. The panoramic views are breathtaking! To the northwest, you’ll see Lake Placid Lake, to the north is Montreal, and to the east is Vermont.  5021 State Route 86, Wilmington

A view of trees in the foreground and Lake Placid Lake in the background from Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway.

#9 Visit John Brown Farm State Historic Site

In the shadow of the Olympic Ski Jump Complex is a peaceful farm that once belonged to abolitionist John Brown. Today you can visit John Brown Farm State Historic Site : his home, his grave, a barn, and walk the trails.

A picture of a barn on John Brown's farm in Lake Placid.

In 1859, John Brown led a group in an attack on the U.S. Arsenal in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia. He was arrested, tried, and hanged later that year. His body was returned to his farm.

This is a lovely, tranquil spot. You can walk into the home which is furnished with period pieces. There’s also a barn up the hill that has displays that recount the movement to abolish slavery. While here, consider a hike on the grounds; there are several short trails.  115 John Brown Road, Lake Placid

#10 Dig into Great Food

Lake Placid has no shortage of great eateries and many of them are on Main Street (on the west side of the lake). We especially enjoyed our delicious dinners at Caffe Rustica , Jimmy’s 21 (lakeside on Main Street), and Salt of the Earth Bistro .

lake placid travel

Lake Placid: Town vs. Lake

The village of Lake Placid surrounds Mirror Lake, a quiet, tranquil lake with no motorized boats allowed. The west side of Mirror Lake is the commercial district with Main Street’s hotels, shops, and restaurants; the east side is more residential with a few hotels near the southern end.

A picture of the Mirror Lake beach in Lake Placid.

Lake Placid Lake actually sits north of Mirror Lake. It’s 5 miles long and about 2 miles wide; 3 islands pop up in the middle of the lake. There is no commercial development here. Instead you’ll find over 200 homes (referred to as “camps” here) and associated boathouses. Some camps are clearly owned by wealthy individuals with huge structures, but there are modest dwellings, as well. The only lodging found on this lake is Lake Placid Lodge, a sprawling resort.

A picture of a home on Lake Placid Lake.

There is minimal public access to Lake Placid Lake. In fact, some sections of the lake cannot be accessed by cars — there aren’t any roads in some places. So when visiting their vacation homes on the lake, homeowners who do not have road access park their cars at the marina, load up their supplies and groceries in their boats, and cruise over to their homes on the lake.

Where to Stay

The village is very walkable. If you choose your lodging on or close to Mirror Lake, you’ll be able to walk to quite a few venues. Staying close to the lake is nice because you don’t always drive when setting out for a place nearby plus you gain a good feel for the town since you’re on foot.

A view of people sitting in chairs enjoying the evening view of Mirror Lake.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza (which sits up on a hill overlooking the lake). That proximity to the lake and the downtown allowed us to walk around Mirror Lake in the morning, to the Olympic Museum, the marina for the boat ride, downtown Main Street to window shop, the trailhead for a hike up Cobble Hill, and out to dinner in town (although some restaurants will require a car).

There are plenty of other great lodging options. We know some people who love Mirror Lake Inn . Just make sure where you rest your head at night is not far from the spots you most want to enjoy in your free time.

Nearby Attractions

The Adirondacks have plenty more to offer not far from Lake Placid. Consider these options to extend your getaway in this amazing area of New York state. They include interesting sites dating back to the French and Indian War and the American Civil War as well as inviting spas, parks, gardens, shopping, dining — and horse racing!

  • Historical Sites in the New York Adirondack Mountains (including President Grant’s Cottage, Fort Ticonderoga, Fort William Henry, Saratoga Battlefield, John Brown’s Farm)

Final Thoughts

Our sojourn in Lake Placid was delightful. It’s a peaceful place with breathtaking scenery, lots of outdoor exercise options, and of course, winter Olympic sports history and experiences. There’s hiking, biking, boating, and swimming in the warm weather and, naturally, lots of winter-weather sports including skiing, skating, and tobogganing.

Feel free to share your suggestions or ideas for activities and places to visit in and around the Lake Placid area. Your ideas could help other readers. 🙂

7 Best Art Towns In America To Visit In 2024

America's newest national park is among the most dangerous, despite being the hottest u.s. city, the population is still steadily increasing.

For a small alpine village, Lake Placid hits way above its weight class with a string of world-class attractions. This upstate New York town’s reputation has become synonymous with the cold season, having hosted the Winter Olympics contingent in 1932 and 1980 , a credit to the beautiful landscapes and lovely scenery surrounding it.

Nestled amidst the snowcapped peaks of the Adirondack mountains, Lake Placid is home to various adrenaline-inducing adventures tailored to the ultimate thrill seeker. From skiing and skating to bobsledding and snowboarding, winters can be an exciting time in this idyllic destination. But the village sits right on the edge of the beautiful Mirror Lake, with historic sites and miles of hiking trails, guaranteeing exciting activities to indulge in Lake Placid during spring .

Whether a warm weather junkie or visiting for the winter attractions, this charming village in the Adirondacks promises an unforgettable experience.

Things To Do In Lake Placid

Lake Placid is a viable vacation spot all year round, thanks to diverse attractions favoring the outdoorsy traveler. But those who prefer the indoors should know that there is something for everyone among the top things to do in Lake Placid.

1 Explore The Olympic Sites

There are more than enough reasons to visit Lake Placid in winter ; the top among them is to experience its historic Olympic sites.

Although it’s been over four decades since the last Winter Olympics was held here, tourists can still “ski” down memory lane at the different areas open for exploration.

These include the bobsled run and the snowboarding/skiing slopes on Whiteface Mountain.

Visitors can also check out Mt. Van Hoevenberg’s cross-country ski trails or brave the high-speed gondola rides at the Olympic Jumping Complex.

  • Museum admission : $15
  • Museum hours: 10 am – 5 pm, daily

Get immersed into Lake Placid’s Olympic legacy at Lake Placid Olympic Museum and live out the lasting memories, including the epic “ Miracle on Ice” hockey game , by scoping out old videos, photographs, and other memorabilia displayed at the museum.

2 Hit The Slopes Of Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the state and a year-round activity hub, making it the ultimate playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

It has almost 90 miles of trails, including 22 miles of picturesque skiing trails that promise vacationers a wild downslope ride.

Come summer, the once-powdered routes turn into the perfect slope for extreme mountain bikers and cross-country hikers.

However, sightseers can also get in on the fun by riding on the Cloudsplitter Gondola, which affords stunning vistas of the mountain’s snowy peaks.

Alternatively, visitors can go on a winding drive along the Veterans Memorial Highway, which offers one of the most scenic drives in Lake Placid , with cute photo opportunities.

3 Admire The Scenes At High Falls Gorge

Several outdoor attractions make Lake Placid one of the most beautiful places to visit in New York State , but High Falls Gorge is easily the most stunning scenery in the Adirondacks.

These gorgeous cascades lie in a privately owned nature park at the base of Whiteface Mountains, with delightful trails bringing visitors within touching distance of four magical waterfalls.

The warmer seasons, spring to summer, are a great time to explore High Falls Gorge as guests can embark on a trek along the gorge to savor the unprecedented views of Rainbow Falls, Mini Falls, Climax Falls, and Main Falls.

  • Admission : Adults $15.95, Kids $12.95, 3 and under free
  • Hours : Fri to Tue, 9 am – 3:30 pm

When visiting in summer, stroll on the glass-floor walkways for a remarkable birds-eye perspective of the gorge.

4 Enjoy The Aquatic Fun On Mirror Lake

This 124-acre Mirror Lake is essentially the focal point of the entire Lake Placid community, which sits right on the lake’s edge. Its glistening waters nicely reflect the imposing peaks of the Adirondack Peaks and serve as the nucleus of all water-based recreational activities in the village.

From swimming and canoeing to kayaking and paddleboarding, vacationers can have unadulterated fun, ideal for the whole family.

A 2.7-mile route around the lake proves quite popular with bikers and walkers looking to stretch, and standing at the lake’s edge spoils sightseers with pulsating panoramas of the Adirondack High Peaks.

When Mirror Lake freezes over in summer, it hosts activities like pond hockey and ice skating, ensuring there is never a dull moment.

5 Visit The John Brown Farm State Historic Site

History buffs in Lake Placid can head to the John Brown Farm State Historic Site, which preserves the former homestead and burial ground of the iconic American abolitionist.

John Brown's storied reputation for radical abolitionism earned him national prominence. In 1849, he moved to the farm’s site to help formerly enslaved people establish a thriving farming community.

But after infamously leading a botched assault on the country’s Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, he was jailed and later hanged.

Today, holidaymakers can learn about Brown's rich legacy by exploring different personal items of the Brown family housed at the John Brown Farm.

  • Admission : Adults $2, Students $1

All of these deliver a unique experience for explorers in the village outskirts any season of the year.

Hikers must take necessary caution when exploring the wilderness of Lake Placid, as several dangers lurk in the secluded territories of the Adirondacks , including black bears, poisonous plants, and the possibility of getting lost.

7 Take In The Views Atop Mount Jo

Mount Jo is one of the low-lying peaks in the Adirondacks, offering a family-friendly challenge for novice adventures looking to break a sweat.

The relatively easy hike features two trails, the Long Trail at 1.1 miles long and the Short Trail at 1.3 miles long. Both lead to the 2,876-foot summit of the mountain, where incredible vistas of the Adirondacks High Peaks await.

During winter, the slopes of Mount Jo become a prime spot for snowshoeing, especially on the gentler Long Trail. While it’s possible to snowshoe on the Short Trail, snow spikes may prove necessary on the steeper sections.

Fall is the perfect time to scale Mount Jo, as red, yellow, and brown hues transform the valley into a dramatic scene full of vibrant colors.

Lake Placid is a village of 2,400 people (2019) in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York , near the center of the town of North Elba and named after an adjacent lake.

While the village is a year-round resort, it is most known as the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics . In a 1980 USA-USSR hockey game, the "Miracle on Ice," a group of American college students and amateurs upset the heavily-favored Soviet national ice hockey team 4-3. Two days later, they won the gold medal.

Lake Placid hosts a Winter Olympics summer training facility where one can watch sports like ski jumping, aerial jumping and figure skating. The town is charming and fun for the outdoorsy and/or adventure-spirited.

The Cliffside Coaster in Upstate New York was originally used during the 1980 Olympic winter games in Lake Placid.

Anna Rahmanan

Come fall, there's nothing quite as cool and thrilling and as riding the longest outdoor mountain roller coaster in the country, which is now open for the season at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Upstate New York.

A truly remarkable feat of engineering, the Cliffside Coaster, as the attraction built like a bobsled track is called, has been spinning ticket holders all around a 1.4-mile-long Olympic sliding track since 2020. The ride was actually originally used during the 1980 Olympic winter games in Lake Placid: it was part of the bobsledding competition. What's more, the experience, which takes about eight minutes from start to finish, also boasts a timing and audio system that has participants feel like they're actually part of that Olympic event.

One more thing: just like you would when bobsledding, you are actually able to control your speed when turning while on the ride.

“The views are amazing, and the curves get your heart pounding,”  Olympic Regional Development Authority President & CEO Mike Pratt said in 2020. “ Everyone will feel like they deserve a medal.”

In addition to the adrenaline rush, riders constantly talk about the beauty involved in seeing the gorgeous fall leaves all around you while speeding through the course.

Cliffside Coaster in Lake Placid

Considering that the famous Cyclone rollercoaster in Coney Island is still closed indefinitely  due to some well-founded safety concerns, this might actually be the very best coaster in the New York area currently in operation.

The Cliffside Coaster is open daily 10am to 5pm, Given the popularity of the ride, we suggest you snag tickets for it before you visit. You can buy those right here . Happy fall, New York!

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
