Welcome to Alaska

The heart-stopping excitement of a tidewater glacier calving into the sea... the quiet majesty of a bald eagle soaring in a cloudless sky... snow-clad mountains towering over deep blue rivers... forested landscapes and glistening fjords... a legacy of cultural traditions... accessible on adventures that invite you to experience them up close and unhurried all in one epic destination.

Denali national park, "alaska: call of the wild" ~ "grand alaska" ~ "wild alaska".

A flightseeing adventure around the southern side of Denali takes in all possible views on a flight over the vast Alaska wilderness, untouched by modern man. View incredible glaciers, peaks and valleys soaring above open alpine tundra and glacier-fed, braided rivers – with a possibility of spotting cascading icefalls and wildlife such as moose, bear, swans and the occasional wolf or coyote.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve

"wild alaska".

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is one of the best habitats in Alaska to see bears. The topography of the park attracts an abundance of wildlife – and when the salmon are running, the brown bears come to the shores of Crescent Lake to fish. From a vantage point on the lake, you'll have an opportunity to see them – and photograph them – up close as they fish and forage along the riverbanks.

One of my greatest pleasures is sharing the history of the great state of Alaska in folk songs and stories...

Steve Hites, "Alaska's Inside Passage"

Tracy Arm Fjord

"alaska's inside passage".

Ice calving, or the thunderous spectacle of ice breaking off from glaciers, is one of Alaska's natural wonders that is amazing to both watch and hear. Tracy Arm Fjord, approximately 50 miles southeast of Juneau, is about 30 miles long – and is home to some of Alaska's largest and most stunning glaciers. The scenery is breathtaking – waterfalls cascade, lush forests border the shores, and the ice glistens with myriad hues. Don't be surprised to find families of seals sunning themselves – and keep an eye open for orcas...

Capital City

Washington D.C.

Good morning

Good evening

"Alaska is one of the most impressive places on earth and it’s always a pleasure to watch our guests discover our incredible glaciers, fjords, mountains and people, gaining a deeper appreciation for our beautiful planet."

Travel Director

Cruise Prince William Sound Glacier

You won’t want to blink when we take you on a glacier and wildlife cruise around Prince William Sound. The towering ice cliffs of the Columbia Glaciers have carved giant blue icebergs into the bay, and you’ll have the chance to spot seals, otters, porpoises and sea lions as you sail around the glaciers.

Admire Alaska’s majestic highways

Home to some of the world’s most scenic highways, we’ll take you on an unforgettable drive when we travel Alaska. Catch sight of Mount Denali on the Denali Highway, see the snowy summits of the Alaska Range on the Richardson Highway, and journey into the clouds along the Top of the World Highway.

Take an iconic train journey through Alaska's wilderness

One of the best ways to discover Alaska is by train and our Alaska tours will take you winding through the wilderness on an iconic train journey aboard the Alaska Railroad. Relax in a deluxe dome railcar and keep your eyes peeled as you journey through the stunning valley landscapes.

Visit Denali National Park

Of all the things to do in Alaska, Denali National Park is one of the most memorable. This untamed wilderness is full of pinch-me moments, like hiking through remote landscapes, rafting the wild waters of the Nenana, discovering rare subarctic wildlife, and learning about the Alaskan natives who once lived in the park.

Enjoy a city tour of Anchorage

As the biggest city in Alaska, Anchorage is the perfect launch pad to your adventure through the state. But first, we’ll take you on an Anchorage tour to discover this buzzing city and learn more about Alaska’s native cultures. Be sure to check out all the city’s fantastic parks, markets and museums.

Our top 5 things to do in Alaska

From exploring the fjords and glaciers of the national parks, to driving the scenic highways, you’ll get to see the best of Alaska with our Alaska cruises and tours.

Wrangell St Elias Visitor Center

We’ll make a stop at the fantastic visitor center for Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in the USA. Established in 1980, the park is part of a massive World Heritage Site and the visitor center is full of fascinating information on local history, maps, hiking trails, and local plants and animals.

Valdez Museum

We’ll dive into the unique heritage of Valdez with a visit to the Valdez Museum, where you'll discover the city’s role in the salmon canning, fur trading and mining eras. Some of the top sights are the saltwater aquariums with the marine life of Port Valdez, a restored 1907 Ahrens ‘Continental’ steam fire engine, and a turn-of-the-century saloon bar.

Alaska Native Heritage Center

The Alaska Native Heritage Center is one of the best Anchorage museums, and we’ll take you there to get a deeper insight into Alaska’s native cultures and traditions. You can learn native dances, observe the making of traditional arts, and tour full-size replicas of Alaska native buildings, all while surrounded by peaceful wilderness.

Best museums in Alaska

Our Alaska holidays show you the vibrant history and culture of the state through the best Alaska museums, from native cultural storytelling to tales of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Reindeer Dogs

If you’re looking for Alaskan street food, it doesn’t get much better than reindeer dogs. They’re like hot dogs, but made with reindeer sausage, and we’ll show you where to find them on street corners all over the cities. Add on your favorite toppings like onions, mustard and ketchup and you’ve got the perfect snack.

Black cod and salmon

Fish takes a starring role in Alaskan cuisine and we can see why, as you can often get it caught fresh just a few meters from your dinner plate. The most popular fish is salmon and you can try it baked, grilled, broiled or smoked, while black cod is another favorite, especially when it's marinated and grilled to perfection.

Akutaq (also known as Eskimo Ice Cream)

Akutaq is not your usual ice cream. This Native Alaskan dish was traditionally made with the whipped fat from hunted animals like seals, bears and reindeer, mixed with snow and wild berries, but more recent versions make it with vegetable shortening and berries. We’ll show you where to find this tasty dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Best food in Alaska

From the famously fresh fish pulled from the water, to the Alaska-style hot dogs and ice cream, there is no shortage of tasty Alaskan foods to try.

What to pack for Alaska

People packing for a tour

Waterproof coat

Even if you travel Alaska during the warmer months from May to September, you’ll still encounter temperatures anywhere from below freezing to around mid 20°C (mid-70s F), so bring a coat to stay warm.

Hiking shoes

Alaska is packed with spectacular parks and hiking trails. Pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes to see all the sights, from the Denali mountains to the Dawson gold mines.

Reusable water bottle

Help keep Alaska beautiful by using a reusable water bottle to avoid adding to waste with disposable plastic bottles. Remember to leave no trace when you visit the pristine national parks.

With some of the world’s most phenomenal landscapes, you can’t visit Alaska without bringing a camera to capture all the beauty. Bring a few extra SD cards too so you never run out of space.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Best of Alaska 2023

The year's best of the best based on traveler ratings.

At the end of every summer travel season we ask our guests to rate and review the lodging, transportation, and excursions they partook in during their time in Alaska. This ensures that we're always offering the best experiences to future guests.

It also lets us shine the spotlight on the year's best of the best based on those guest ratings. Without further ado:

Best Excursion

So many great ones, we had to break it down by destination.

  • Seward - Northwestern Fjord - Aialik Bay Kayaking Day Trip
  • Anchorage - Alpine Classic Trek
  • Palmer - Knik Helicopter Glacier Landing
  • Talkeetna - Denali Experience Flight AND Denali Glacier Landing Flight (tied)
  • Denali - Denali Wilderness ATV Tour
  • Girdwood/Whittier - Spencer Glacier Bears, Trains & Icebergs
  • Homer - Ultimate Kachemak Bay Kayak & Hike
  • Fairbanks - Arctic Circle Air Adventure
  • McCarthy/Kennicott - Kennicott Half Day Root Glacier Hike

Best Place to Stay

For the second year in a row, this historic wilderness lodge delivers!

  • Kennicott Glacier Lodge

Best Train Ride

The Coastal Classic train route tops the list for travelers years after year.

  • Alaska Railroad GoldStar Dome Anchorage to Seward

Best Motorcoach Ride

The top-rated motorcoach segment, and a perfect cruise transfer, too.

  • Park Connection Anchorage to Whittier

Best New Addition

The highest rated new excursion added in 2023.

  • Hatcher Pass History & Hike Tour

Best Escorted Package

New to Best of Alaska this year, this escorted tour had such high ratings we had to acknowledge it. On escorted tour packages guests travel with a group and dedicated tour director.

  • National Parks Escorted Tour

Bonus: Most Popular Package

An itinerary that independent Alaska travelers especially enjoyed.

  • Denali & Kenai Fjords Favorites - Tour 110

All experiences are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the best. It was a close year. The difference between the top two places to stay, for example, was just 0.1. Also, the combined average for everything we offered in 2023 was 4.5!

Well done to our wonderful partners throughout Alaska. And thanks to our 2023 travelers for filling out those surveys!

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Legendary Journeys and Adventures

A humpback whale surfaces suddenly into the sparkling air... a tidewater glacier calves into the sea... a majestic bald eagle quietly soars in a cloudless sky... snow-clad mountains tower over deep blue rivers of ice... forested landscapes and glistening fjords of the 49th state reward with priceless treasures...

The ultimate whale-watching experience off the shores of juneau....

Embark on a quest this morning to spot the magnificent whales of Alaska and also be on the lookout for bald eagles, seals, sea lions, black bear, countless birds and more of Alaska's wildlife! The star of these whale-watching cruises is, of course, the humpback whale – but you will always be on the lookout for playful orcas. Humpback whales migrate, sometimes up to 3,000 miles, to summertime Northern Pacific waters; they usually come up for air every 10 to 15 minutes, and are known as the "acrobats of the ocean" for their breaching, rolling and flipper / tale slapping antics.

Private flightseeing above Denali National Park

One of life's memorable experiences – flightseeing over denali national park, near north america's highest peak....

An experienced Alaska bush pilot who loves to share Alaska's most inaccessible and spectacularly-wild setting – up close – takes you on a flightseeing adventure around the southern side of Denali. Take in all possible views of the summit on a flight over the vast Alaska wilderness, untouched by modern man. View incredible glaciers, peaks and valleys soaring above open alpine tundra and glacier-fed, braided rivers – with a possibility of spotting cascading icefalls and wildlife such as moose, bear, swans and the occasional wolf or coyote.

Hotel Captain Cook

"it's not just the little things, it's everything...".

With sweeping views of downtown Anchorage, Cook Inlet or the Chugach Mountains, Hotel Captain Cook is definitely the preferred address in Anchorage. The hotel was inducted into Historic Hotels of America, the official travel organization of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, lauded for preserving and maintaining its historic integrity, architecture and ambiance. Most notably, the hotel's private art collection celebrates the adventures of Captain James Cook – and along with the hotel's architecture itself, stained glass, paintings, woodwork and sculpture tell his story. The legendary sea captain and the hotel that bears his name share two great qualities: a love of nature and an indomitable Alaskan spirit.

Cruising Alaska's magnificent Inside Passage, coastline, glaciers and bays aboard your Princess ship is a true voyage of discovery. Travel Documents

Grand Alaska aboard Princess begins in Anchorage, Alaska, U.S., and ends in Vancouver, Canada.

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Canada and for embarkation. Click here for more information on the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Patrol website. Passport Cards are not acceptable for air travel between Canada and the USA.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not require a visa for the short duration of this tour. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation. If you are a frequent traveler to Canada from the U.S., you may benefit from the NEXUS program which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at certain airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet site by clicking here.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Canada and of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation will be required. A passport is required for embarkation.

Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

This itinerary is one of the more rigorous domestic itineraries we offer. To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. The adventurous journey includes several early morning starts, full-day excursions and many different modes of transportation, including airplane, railroad, cruise ship, boat tender, ferry, catamaran, jet boat, river raft and tram car.

There is a significant amount of walking in Denali National Park and other wilderness areas visited during your journey.

The Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge has two floors and no elevator. If you have difficulty walking, be sure to advise your Tauck Director at the beginning of the tour so that rooms close to the public areas can be requested when possible.

As this itinerary is designed for those who are interested in a faster-paced, adventure-filled experience, if you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

On board  Princess , smoking is not permitted in passenger state rooms or balconies. There are clearly marked "Designated Smoking Areas" available on board with a sufficient number of ashtrays which are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, as well as a portion of the open decks.

The medical center on the Princess ship is staffed by full-time British-registered doctors and nurses. In addition to daily office hours, they are available 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency. If you require medical services, charges for those services will be added to your shipboard account, and you will be provided with an itemized account to submit to your insurance company.

The Princess cruise ship is registered in Bermuda. Please check with your insurer to learn if coverage applies outside the United States, or purchase appropriate travel insurance. If you need to bring and use syringes or other medical equipment onboard, we request that you bring a sharps box and that you contact the shipboard medical infirmary for disposal instructions.

No vaccinations are currently required for travel to Alaska . For complete vaccination information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. The CDC operates a 24-hour information number at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Although the assumption is that Alaska is a land of snow and sub-zero temperatures, the Alaskan climate is actually extremely varied, caused by the state's six different topographic regions. The far north is extremely dry and very cold, with Arctic conditions and temperatures average about -20 °F (-29 °C). Summer temperatures in the lowlands are surprisingly high, averaging in the 60's °F (16° C), and they have been known to reach 90 °F (32 °C), and up. The southeast tends to be fairly moderate, with damp, rainy and sometimes mild conditions, with temperatures in July averaging 56 °F (13 °C), and temperatures in January averaging 30 °F (-1 °C), and the south and central areas tend to be similar, with slightly colder winter temperatures. Western Alaska tends to be rainy, while the Aleutian Islands in winter are damp and rainy, with fog. Heavy snows are common in the north and central regions of the state.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in Alaska is unpredictable. You will be visiting the warmer, dryer area of the interior and the cooler, wetter rainforest of the southeast coast. We suggest you pack clothing that can be layered for various weather conditions. Slacks, a sweater or fleece, a lightweight jacket and a rain coat are versatile clothes for touring, and comfortable "walking shoes" are a must!

We suggest that you dress for a cruise on the Princess ship the same way you would for any stylish land-based resort. Casual sportswear, including shorts, lightweight pants and jogging suits, is the order of the day. We recommend you bring a sweater, a jacket or an all-weather coat for cool evenings, and for shore excursions. Due to unpredictable weather, don't forget a hat or visor and a collapsible umbrella. You'll also want low-heeled, rubber-soled shoes for strolling on deck, as well as comfortable walking shoes or sandals to wear while on shore excursions.

There are two designations of evening wear aboard  Princess : Smart Casual and Formal.

Smart Casual Evenings:

Passengers dress as they would for a fine restaurant at home

Skirts/dresses, slacks, and sweaters for ladies

Pants and open-neck shirts for men

Formal Evenings: (one)

Evening gowns and cocktail dresses for ladies

Tie and jacket, or suits for men

In the dining room, items such as cutoff tee-shirts, shorts, halter tops, and jeans are not permitted and shoes must be worn at all times. Princess cruises require passengers to use cover-ups over bathing suits when entering the ship's public rooms.

Laundry and dry-cleaning services are available on board the Princess. Valet laundry is available at all hotels on this tour except for the McKinely Princess and Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge where you will find coin-operated facilities.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

  • Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken in (very important!)
  • Rain gear - rain coat and umbrella (very important!)
  • Casual daytime wear – slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • Fleece jacket or warm sweatshirt
  • Warm hat, gloves and socks
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

What Travelers Say About their Guided Alaska Tours

Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge was incredible. Everywhere we stayed actually -- each and every place. I really appreciated the regular contact from AdventureSmith, and all the materials you sent were spot-on in terms of preparing for the trip.

Every detail was well-organized and carefully planned, so the complexities of traveling by small bus to boat, back to van, transfer to Kantishna bus, transfer to railroads all worked seamlessly and flawlessly. The guides--all of them, but especially our trip guide and driver--were very knowledgeable, interesting, and fun!

This was certainly one of the top three trips we have taken in our 35 years we have been married. I'm waiting a while to put it into perspective, but it is probably the top one. We got to see beautiful scenery, wildlife, and learned a lot about the places and animals we were seeing.

The destinations were great, but our guide added the most. No skill or talent missing. More than anything else, she made this vacation.

The whole staff were wonderful. Knowledgeable, accommodating, personable... The group dynamics were wonderful and truly enhanced the whole experience.

The trip was amazing in every way. Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge was incredible. Everywhere we stayed actually -- each and every place. The Denali Park Road was an incredible experience; it was beautiful in the rain on the way in and in the sun on the way out. There were no downsides to the trip. Even the weather cooperated beautifully.

Accommodations Review

All accommodations were excellent.  Some were more rustic, but super comfortable rustic.

Meals Review

The food was outstanding, and the snacks provided on the bus rides were so thoughtful. Early morning coffee was available at all the lodges, and the meals were all excellent. I loved all the seafood options the most.

Crew & Guides Review

Leigh L. was outstanding. She was thoughtful, thorough, informed, unflappable, attentive, and super upbeat. The information she provided as we drove was very valuable in that she taught us so much about Alaska. Her organization made everything work smoothly, and if any small problem presented itself she handled it without missing a beat.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I really appreciated the regular contact from AdventureSmith, and all the materials you sent were spot-on in terms of preparing for the trip.

Traveler Advice

Do the trip!  It will be the trip of a lifetime in so many ways.

We expected the lodges to be in lovely locations, which they were, and the food was extraordinary.

Beautiful lodges, well-equipped for the outdoor adventures, which included canoes and kayaks in Kenai or mountain bikes in Kantishna.  It was really nice that the Kenai Lodge had giant boots and very water-proof pants for all. Our primary interest was to see the wildlife and natural beauty of the Kenai Peninsula and Denali National Park, and we saw everything we had hoped for, and more. The Kenai Glacier Wilderness Lodge delighted us with its isolated lagoon and Pedersen Glacier, otters, seals, black bear and eagles. The road through Denali to Kantishna provided us with many sightings of caribou, moose, 5 grizzlies, a red fox with a squirrel in its mouth, and the lodge was charming. We did not spend much time in Seward or Talkeetna, but the accommodations in both were great.

Lovely little appetizers were a nice treat before dinner. All meals were outstanding!

Leigh L. and driver Jeff were fantastic!  Well-prepared, interesting, fun, patient, knowledgeable, warm: they made the trip even more memorable and special! We all hated to say goodbye to them at the end of the trip! The guides in Kenai (Taylor, Riley, Randy, Rainy, Dina, Mia,) were all enthusiastic, interesting, well-prepared, and willing to quickly look up anything on the slight chance that we asked an unusual question.

Emmet, in Kantishna, spoke of his father's winning Iditarod teams, and showed us how the dogs train in the summer time. His presentation was really interesting and fun.  Everyone was very engaging and clearly loves being there!

We were not able to spend more than 10 days, but if you can stay longer in Denali it would help to break up the long travel days!  Be prepared for any kind of weather since it can change quickly.

Note that this review also includes comments on the traveler’s  Prince William Sound Discovery cruise with AdventureSmith Exploration s.

This was certainly one of the top three trips we have taken in our 35 years we have been married. I'm waiting a while to put it into perspective, but it is probably the top one. I will be recommending the Discovery cruise in particular to my travelling friends! Camp Denali and especially the Discovery crew went out of their way to personalize our experience, make sure we were taken care of, and adjusting daily itineraries to account for the weather. We got to see beautiful scenery, wildlife, and learned a lot about the places and animals we were seeing.

We visited Alaska on our honeymoon 35 years ago and wanted to get back to see Denali and tidewater glaciers (we saw Glacier Bay from large cruise ship). We were among 20 people on the cruise ship outside when that ship visited Glacier Bay, and found the focus on entertainment, shopping, and eating was not our style. The Discovery cruise bypassed everything we didn't care for on the large cruise ship and packed our days with activities and sights that made us want to return to Alaska. The personal service and camaraderie were an added bonus!

We did not anticipate the convenience of the short bus trips at Camp Denali to the daily adventures. We saw plentiful wildlife each day with much shorter drives and were able to get out of the bus for extended appreciation of the park on foot.

Camp Denali - rustic, but nice cabins ("glamping"); wonderful lodge.

Camp Denali - excellent main courses; more emphasis on "health-food" for side dishes than we cared for.

Camp Denali - all guides were very knowledgeable about general interest topics, plus at least one specialty.

Transportation Review

Transportation went smoothly.

Pre-trip communication was timely and accurate. Your packing lists were spot-on. We combined two of the AdventureSmith offerings into a single trip. I usually book trips on my own, after exhaustive internet research. This trip involved combining two trips with limited start and end dates. AdventureSmith helped ensure that the trips were compatible and also worked with me to adjust the itineraries for some self-directed travel at the beginning of the trip. I also appreciate the reassurances that AdventureSmith provided when wildfires threatened some of the transportation plans. They assured me that they were in daily contact with the service providers and that backup plans were available in case there were any disruptions.

DO IT! We spent three years vacation budget on this trip. And it was worth it! The five day trip on the Discovery was a good length. I would have enjoyed an additional day. I think I would have been disappointed with a 3-day/2-night trip, in that it would have been hard to get in enough of the activities that we enjoyed so much. (Like eating an appetizer when you want a full meal).

The destinations were great, but our guide -- Lena -- added the most, I think.  She was professional when plans had to change because of uncooperative weather, thoughtful in presenting us with certificates at the end, extremely knowledgeable about the local culture, natural history, geography, etc. And she dealt with the oddballs in our group much better than I could have. Horseback riding was possibly the most adventurous day, though the helicopter ride to the dogsleds was a close second.

I wish we'd had more time to hang out in our cabins, and do self-guided adventures from them.  Particularly desirable: for a couple to take out a kayak or canoe and paddle around without need for a guide.

Almost every meal was very, very good.

Lena: A++  Lena is complete.  No skill or talent missing. More than anything else, she made this vacation.

Bring a waterproof cover for your camera. Do a few 5 mile hikes before the trip.

Alaska Wildland Adventures is an incredible company and offer an A++ experience. Christine and her team were perfect. Knowledgeable, accommodating, personable...  I would certainly travel with them again. We also enjoyed the group and we had a great time with the other guests. There were 17 of us with a nice mix of young adults. The group dynamics were wonderful and truly enhanced the whole experience.

Loved them all, particularly the Backcountry Lodge.

Food was great.

Christine was incredible.  As I mentioned above, her whole staff and the staff at the lodges were wonderful. I would offer a particular shoutout to Evan and Kelly.  They both added that something special to the experience.

Be prepared for the cold and rain.
