We had a great time on this tour! Billy was our driver (a great driver) and he was very friendly, fun, informative and accommodating. When they offer the poncho, take it! You will be glad you did!! We ended with a delicious breakfast at Maui Tropical Plantation.

I always wanted to do Road to Hāna but was always intimidated by driving the daunting, windy, wet roads on my own. So I decided to book this trip and I was very grateful I did! Joe the tour guide was wonderful. He explained things along the drive so it was informative! We stopped at different spots to take pictures/use bathroom. There were three main stops, one for lunch and then the black sand beach and a gorgeous fresh waterfall lagoon. It was paradise and I’m glad I was able to have Joe drive while I could enjoy the views! Highly recommend!

Our trip was fabulous! Billy and Alika were amazing tour guides/drivers! They helped us understand the Hawaiian culture more. They go the extra mile to make the excursion amazing, including providing jackets at the top! Highly recommend using Valley Isle Tours!

The whole experience was excellent. The tour itself was beautiful, scenic, and a must-do for anyone traveling to Maui. And our guide, Travis, was fantastic! He knew every detail of the roads, was an excellent driver, provided tons of relevant history and information, and kept everyone engaged and having fun. He also seemed to know everyone along the way (relatives and friends), and provided lots of good tips about following the rules posted on signs, being respectful, etc. He really did make the trip one to remember.

We had an amazing day. The beauty of what we saw is beyond words. Moa was the best guide. He made it fun and kept us laughing g and informed the whole way. Swimming at Black Sand Beach and in the waterfall were so much fun.

Yvonne our guide was the best! Witty, fantastic fund of knowledge. Brought all the great Hawaiian vibe that is needed for this day long road trip! Yvonne you exceeded our expectations!

Billy picked me up at my hotel and drove us up to the volcano rim for this beautiful experience. Abe gave u a lot of good info as well as kept us warm with coat like ponchos. Of course the sunrise was just breathtaking. A one in a life time experience. Then, we had a very good breakfast, at a great restaurant. I wasn't expecting that! I am so glad I did this tour!

This trip was incredible. Billy our driver was great. He was informative, funny, and most importantly friendly. We became ohana right from the beginning. Billy got us the best spot to watch the sunrise. He’s been doing the Haleakala tour for a long time and his love of his job shows. I would highly recommend Valley Isle to anyone. We did the road to Hana with them earlier in the week and that was awesome too. The sunrise tour is a must do if you visit Maui. I’d also recommend requesting Billy as your driver. You won’t be disappointed.

Discover Hana, the jewel of the Valley Isle, on this breathtaking adventure, as you access the narrow, winding road marked by tiny bridges, wildly gorgeous foliage, and waterfalls.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN MAUI

Located at 20°48′N 156°20′W, Maui has a total land area of 727.2 square miles and a population of over 140,000 people.

For two decades, Conde Nast Traveler readers have voted Maui – the Valley Isle – as the Best Island in the World . Their reasons are found everywhere: on ancient volcanic slopes, in the valleys that gave Maui its nickname, along miles of scenic shoreline, and in its azure coastal waters.

The discoveries here are downright magical. Rise above the clouds on Mt. Haleakala and marvel at its other-worldly beauty and the rare species that survive near the summit. Watch the spectacular sunrise on the summit , the highest peak in Maui. Wind through Upcountry Maui, where farmers produce an array of agricultural products including lavender, protea, beef, pineapples, onions, and strawberries. Drive along one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines to Lahaina, once home to whalers and seafarers, and today a hot spot for shopping, dining, and entertainment. The Haleakala, Upcountry Maui & Iao Valley Day Tour will take you to many of these locations.

Particularly worthwhile is a visit to Hana, offered on the  Heavenly Hana Tour . Deeply steeped in Hawaiian ways, this cultural treasure in East Maui is accessible via a narrow, winding road marked by tiny bridges, wildly gorgeous foliage and waterfalls. You can also enjoy award-winning beaches and golf courses in South and West Maui, museums and heritage parks in the central isthmus, and during season, humpback whales breaching offshore.

Redline Rafting

What : Whale Watch Price : From $75 Duration : 1.5 hours

In the winter months, whale watch tours are in high demand on the Valley Isle— and there’s certainly no shortage of tour boats ready to welcome you aboard. For a memorable, slightly offbeat whale watch excursion, go with Redline Rafting. From January to March, Redline Rafting hosts down-to-earth Maui whale tours aboard an agile, 35-foot inflatable raft. Best Maui activities, tours, and excursions for your Hawaii bucket list

These are the very best Maui activities:

1. Attend a Luau

A lūʻau (luau) is a traditional Hawaiian party  that combines food, music, and dance. Attending a luau is a great way to experience Hawaiian culture, taste some uniquely prepared food, and get to know local traditions. No trip to Maui would be complete without attending a luau at least once!

Kalua Pig , (Kalua Pua’a in Hawaiian), is the central main dish of a luau. It’s slow-cooked in an underground oven for around 8 hours and there is a special ceremony for bringing the tender cooked pig outside.

The luau feast also usually includes Hawaiian games, local crafts, and a show with Hawaiian songs and traditional hula dancing. Some shows also have fire throwers and that makes the whole experience even more unique.

Practical information: There are many places on Maui that organize Luau feasts. You can find them at some bigger hotels as well. On Viator , you can book some of the popular luaus in Maui. And yes, these parties are meant for tourists these days, but it gives you a unique opportunity to experience Hawaiian traditions.

2. See the Sunrise at Mt. Haleakala

One of the most unique activities on Maui is seeing a sunrise from on top of the Haleakala volcano. Haleakala is a dormant volcano with a peak towering above the island at 10,023 ft (3,055 m).

A visit here is impressive any time of the day, but coming at sunrise is one of the most magical experiences in Maui. The views from the top are phenomenal, but it’s probably even more special coming here on a cloudy day when you find yourself above the sea of clouds under your feet. It’s an experience you won’t quickly forget.

Practical information: There are many organized sunrise tours of the Haleakala . A popular way to explore the National Park is by booking a self-guided bike tour . They drive you up to the mountain for sunrise and afterward you bike down the volcano at your own pace.

Good to know: You can also visit Mt. Haleakala on your own. However, if you want to visit at sunrise, you’ll have to make a reservation (it’s free of charge, but you have to reserve). However, Mt Haleakala is part of a National Park, so you’ll have to pay a fee to enter. If you have an annual America the Beautiful National Parks Pass , it’s also valid here.

3. Swim with Sea Turtles

One of the most unique activities in Maui is snorkeling and s wimming with sea turtles . Out of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, five of them can be found in Hawaii, including the most common sort, the green sea turtle.

There are many places around Maui where you can expect to see sea turtles, often right next to the shore or even laying on the beach. The best time to see sea turtles on the beaches in Maui is said to be in summer when the waters are calmer, but in the water, they can be seen year-round.

Some of the best places to see sea turtles in Maui are Maluaka Beach in Turtle Town, Black Rock Beach in Kaanapali, Slaughterhouse Beach, and several others. The best time to see turtles is in the middle of the day.

Practical information: You can head to one of the beaches where turtles are known to hang out and try to spot them yourself. Alternatively, if you want to increase your chances of swimming with turtles, you can also join snorkeling tours . Some of these tours also visit Molokini Crater (more info further below).

4. Drive the Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is one of the most beautiful places in Maui. No matter if you are visiting for just a few days or spending a longer vacation in Maui, driving the Road to Hana is an absolute must.

This winding road on the northeast side of Maui takes you to some of the most spectacular locations on the island. It’s not about reaching a specific destination, but about the trip itself. As you drive, you’ll stumble upon black rocky beaches, lush forests with waterfalls, and rugged coastal landscapes. So take the time to stop and explore the most beautiful places along the road.

Practical information:  Driving the Road to Hana can take 8-10 hours, so start early and plan an entire day for it. You can either drive the Road to Hana yourself or choose one of the many amazing tours that visit this stunning part of the island .

TIP: Pack a picnic lunch and also buy some homemade banana bread at one of the roadside stands along the way. If you drive yourself, you can also get an audio tour that describes the route and the best stops along The Road to Hana.

5. Go Whale Watching

Maui is a great place to see whales, especially humpback whales. Humpback whales come to Maui for its warm calm waters of the ‘Au’au Channel and surrounding areas. ‘Au’au means ‘to take a bath’ – this refers to bathtub-like water conditions of the channel. And whales love it!

The absolute best season to see whales in Maui is from January to March, but you have very good chances to see whales anywhere between November and May. It’s possible to spot whales outside of this season as well, but your chances are significantly lower.

Practical information: The best way to see whales in Maui is by booking a  whale watching tour . These tours actively go looking for whales, communicate with the other boats in the region, and do their utmost to make sure that you get to see whales.

6. Take a Helicopter Tour

There is no better way to appreciate the beauty of Maui Island than seeing it from above.

Of course, you can get a window seat on the plane when you fly in or out of the island, and catch a glimpse of the island for a few moments… But it cannot compare to a helicopter tour that takes you to the most beautiful places and allows you to truly appreciate its beauty!

From the air, you can see some of the most remote places and the most stunning locations of Maui. In addition, an aerial view of the area gives you a very different perspective. It’s truly one of the best experiences in Maui and it will be a highlight of any vacation!

Practical information: There are several incredible  helicopter tours  on Maui. Most of them take 45-60 minutes, but there are also a few longer ones. Because this only takes such a short time, it’s easy to plan a helicopter tour during any trip, no matter how many days you have in Maui.

7. Snorkel Molokini Crater

Molokini is a tiny island formed by a partially-submerged volcanic crater, located just off the shore in the southwest of Maui. Molokini reef is known as one of the best snorkeling locations in Maui.

Snorkeling between underwater lava tubes and arches is a unique experience. The marine life is very rich here, and Molokini is one of the best places to see green sea turtles in Maui.

Practical information: There are various tours in Maui that go to Molokini Crater (see available tours here ). Most of them leave in the morning, take 5-6 hours, and include lunch. But if that’s too long for you, there are is also a shorter and cheaper afternoon tour (see here ) that only takes 3 hours.

8. Take a Sunset Cruise

Maui sunsets are truly incredible! A great way to end your day is taking a sunset cruise and enjoy the stunning colors of the sky from the water.

There are many different sunset cruises. Some of them include dinner, some open bar and appetizers, others – cocktails. No matter which one you choose, it’s a truly unique experience in Maui that will definitely make your vacation more special!

Practical information: You can find a selection of the most popular sunset tours here . They depart from various locations in Maui and typically take 1.5 – 2.5 hours.

9. Visit Pineapple Plantation

Taking a pineapple tour is one of the unique Maui activities that is also well worth your time. After all, how often will you have the chance to visit a working pineapple plantation with fields of pineapples as far as an eye can see!

Not only will you learn more about pineapples, but you also get to taste them. Some of the sweetest pineapples you’ll ever taste! In addition, every guest receives a pineapple! They make it airport-ready too, so that you can take it home if you like.

Practical information: The Maui pineapple tour takes place at Hali’imaile farm and takes about 1.5 hours. You’ll have to drive there on your own. To avoid disappointment, be sure to reserve your pineapple tour in advance.

Best Way To Experience The Road To Hana! ★★★★★

We spent the day with John, he was just amazing, knowledgeable and kind. He took us to amazing sites and stopped for lunch for one of the best pizzas I've ever eaten. My partner is in a wheelchair, cannot walk at all, after another company canceled the tour, just one day in advance, we were lucky enough to find an experience on Maui tours. It was really worth it, the landscapes are beautiful. John had the patience to accompany us to any place we ask to stop and took us to some other amazing placesThanks to make our visit to Hana possible.

We got to spend the day with Chris, he was very engaging and knowledgeable! Not only did he take us to some awesome sights, he was prepared with snacks and drinks. He also stopped at great places for lunch and ice cream. We had a great time with him and he made our day amazing and memorable! Thanks Chris!

Great trip with Luke. My son got to dive off rocks into a waterfall, we saw how chocolate was made at the cacao farm, ate organic ice cream from a truck, had an amazing comfortable car and knowledgeable, careful driver. The driver is able to customize the trip a bit, which makes things great. At one of our stops, I heard some ladies complaining about getting back on the uncomfortable bus, so I had to thank Luke when we got back in the very comfortable SUV! I would highly recommend.

We booked this tour not knowing what to expect besides it was a tour to the famous road to hana. When you book a tour you don’t really know what to expect how it’s gonna go or with who. Spencer was our tour guide and wow all i can say is highly recommend and he over exceeded expectations if you’re going to book a tour make sure it’s worth spencer. Spencer commmunicated with me the day before pick up showed up at the exact time of pick up he made the experience comfortable and there was not one moment where we were quiet he taught us about the culture the island and history behind every location we visited beautiful experience with an amazing tour guide you won’t be disappointed the road to hana is a beautiful experience but when you have a tour guide that makes the time more enjoyable the experience is better you won’t be disappointed.

We had an amazing day with Shayne. He was extremely knowledgeable and considerate of everyone in our party and our abilities (there were 5 of us including 11yo, 9yo, and 7yo). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed our tour especially the red sand beach. The girls have enthusiastically retold their favorite parts of the tour to friends and family. Definitely amazing memories made! Don’t hesitate , book the tour and ask for Shayne! Mahalo Shayne!

After living on Maui for three years and exploring the island as part of our job (see our YouTube Channel ), we are finally sharing the best things to do on Maui. Therefore, getting this list down to the best 33 things to do on Maui was challenging.

Learning about Hawaiian history and culture is also a must, so we have you covered. You can plan your Maui bucket list with this article!

Things to Do on Maui Videos

Our passion is writing about Hawaii and Maui trip planning but we also make some pretty good Hawaii travel videos. To get the feel of the trade winds blowing through your hair and then diving into turquoise waters, watch the videos below for more things to do on Maui.

For those Maui couples celebrating their honeymoon, anniversary, or special occasion, see our things to do on Maui for your honeymoon video below. Then read our Maui vs Kauai for your honeymoon to see if visiting two islands is worth it ( Hawaii island-hopping guide ).

We have a collection of Road to Hana videos as there is so much to see and do on the way to Hana and on East Maui. My favorite Road to Hana video is below with 11 stops over two days while we camped in a 1989 VW Westfalia Camper Van.

Things to Do on Maui by Location

Maui is a large island. At 727 square miles, Maui is the second largest Hawaiian Island after the Big Island. Two volcanoes divide Maui into West and East Maui, they make navigating the island time-consuming.

To help you understand where these things to do on Maui are located, this list is organized by the main geographic areas of Maui. See the Maui map below for reference.

things to do on maui map

Most visitors to Maui stay in South Maui or West Maui. See our Kaanapali vs Wailea review for details if you’re deciding where to stay. Our Best Family Resorts on Maui article is also helpful.

Regardless of where you stay on Maui, you will find a lot of things to keep you entertained. Here is a collection of our things to do on Maui lists:

  • 68 Things to Do on Maui with Kids
  • 15 Amazing Things to Do in Upcountry Maui
  • Our Favorite Maui Tours and Activities
  • Handicap Accessible Things to Do on Maui

Let’s start our things to do on Maui in West Maui. The area we still like to call home.

Things to Do in West Maui

West Maui is well known for Kaanapali Beach Resorts, a line of beachfront hotels, and historic Lahaina Town. Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1802 to 1845. Lahaina suffered a devastating fire in August 2023 and remains closed. While you cannot go to Lahaina, there are a lot of other things to do and see on West Maui.

Let us show you the best things to do in West Maui. See the Google map below for the location of each. We are starting in Northwest Maui and working our way south.

1. Nakalele Blowhole

Maui’s Nakalele blowhole is a geological formation in West Maui that erupts every few minutes with over 50-foot geyser-like water spouts. The Nakalele blowhole is located 30-minutes north of Ka’anapali. One can view the blowhole from above or hike a quarter-mile down a steep hillside for a closer look.

See our Nakalele Blowhole article for details on the best time to view, parking, and safety items.

nakalele blowhole west Maui thing to do

My whole family enjoys seeing the blowhole from up on the cliff. Two safety recommendations on the Nakalele Blowhole:

  • The blowhole is best viewed from above or stay on the dry rocks. People have been swept into the ocean by waves or into the blowhole.
  • Second, we don’t recommend driving further down Kahekili Highway as the road gets dangerous, with one lane on a cliff in spots, and local residents prefer their solitude.

Directions: Nakalele Blowhole Poelua Bay, Wailuku, HI 96793

Grab some banana bread from the stand in the parking lot and drive back to Honolua Bay or the best beach on Maui, our next thing to do on Maui.

2. Best Beach on Maui: Kapalua Bay

Kapalua Beach at Kapalua Bay is our favorite beach on Maui. The small, crescent-shaped bay has excellent snorkeling, standup paddleboard rentals at the beach, and a coastal walking trail.

Kapalua Bay is a good spot to see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles from shore or when snorkeling around the edges of the bay. The bay has gotten more popular in recent years so the public parking lot fills up fast. There is some street parking and paid parking at the tennis club.

Want more Maui snorkel spots with turtles? See our 11 Best Snorkel Spots on Maui .

Directions: Kapalua Bay Public Parking Lot, 99 Coconut Grove Ln, Lahaina, HI 96761

3. Swim with Sea Turtles at Napili Bay

Next to Kapalua Bay is Napili Bay, another gem of a beach on Maui (see all our 17 favorite Maui beaches plus parking directions ).

Napili Bay has a large golden sand beach (erosion is getting worse though) on a crescent-shaped bay. The swimming and snorkeling are both excellent here.

Children can explore the tidepools for shells and fish on the south side of the Bay. Parents will enjoy the two restaurants that flank the bay. Sea House is best for lunch and dinner. They have a good happy hour, live music, and a good spot for sunset. The Gazebo is a famous breakfast spot on the island. There is a long line that is worth the wait or call for take-out.

Directions: Napili Bay Parking 5315 Lower Honoapiilani Rd F248, Lahaina, HI 96761

Kapalua Bay and Napili Bay are in northwest Maui. This part of West Maui is lush and green due to more rain, even during the summer. During the winter , you may experience wind, rain, and rough surf at times. Swim with caution during the winter as there are no lifeguards on duty at these beaches.

4. Snorkel at Kahekili Beach Park

A lesser-known beach (depends on who you ask!), Kahekili Beach is referred to as Airport Beach as the beach park used to be the end of a runway.

This beach has a large, shaded parking area, showers, and public restrooms. The beach is connected to the Ka’anapali Beach Boardwalk.

At Kahekili Beach, you can find a large sand beach with good snorkeling out front. The beach is also a great place to see whales during whale season (December – March) and hear their songs underwater. See our Airport Beach on Maui: The Full Guide for details on visiting.

Directions: 65 Kai Ala Dr, Lahaina, HI 96761

things to do on Maui snorkeling airport beach

5. Kaanapali Beach

West Maui is known for its beaches, hence there are a lot of beaches on this list. Kaanapali Beach is so much more than a beach though.

Kaanapali Beach is a 3-mile-long beach lined with resorts and condo high rises. This is a great place to stay on Maui for families, couples, and adventure seekers.

Kaanapali Beach has Black Rock Beach on the north end, famous for snorkeling and rock jumping. Both are dangerous so see our Black Rock article for tips.

Snorkel tours and sunset sail cruises leave directly from Kaanapali Beach. Visit the beach, go shopping at Whalers Village, walk the boardwalk, and have dinner at one of the many restaurants along the beach. There are small public parking lots along the beach. Validated parking is available at Whalers Village Shopping Center.

Directions: Kaanapali Beach

7. Whale Watching from West Maui

If you’re heading to Maui in the winter, you’re in luck. That’s the prime time to witness an estimated 10,000 whales that migrate from Alaska to Hawaii each year . And Maui is truly the best Hawaiian island for whale watching .

You can see them from shore or head out on a whale-watching tour. We cover all you need to know about whale season in our Ultimate Guide to Whale Watching on Maui . Then explore our 7 recommended whale tours on Maui . Many of the tours have our exclusive HVG coupons .

8. Day Trip to Lanai

One of the great things about visiting Maui is its proximity to Lanai. After a quick 45-minute ferry ride, you can find yourself landing on a different island. A private island owned by a billionaire.

Explore Hulopoe Beach (one of the best in Hawaii), head to Lanai City for galleries and lunch, or hop in a Jeep to get to Shipwreck Beach. Lanai is worth a day trip . Our favorite 21 things to do Lanai will show you how to explore the island.

The ferry to Lanai leaves from Ma’alaea Harbor. Get a round-trip ticket and off you go!

Currently, the ferry to Lanai is the only operating ferry between Hawaiian islands. See our Hawaii Island-Hopping Guide for tips on exploring more islands during your trip. Or learn all about cruising Hawaii if you want to see more islands in a short period of time.

9. Olowalu Snorkeling

The reef in front of the historic village of Olowalu is home to sea turtles, monk seals, large fish, and a pristine reef. If you’re looking for a unique place to snorkel on Maui, head to Olowalu. You can walk in from Olowalu Beach but we prefer to do a kayak snorkeling tour .

The kayak and snorkeling tour will take you further out in the reef to see the best spots. The kayak tour is also a fun whale-watching experience during whale season.

Olowalu snorkeling thing to do on maui

Tip: Maui is working to revitalize the reefs around the island. You can help by wearing sun protective clothing, mineral-based sunscreen , and not stepping on the reef. See our Hawaii Travel Gear section for details.

Things to Do in South Maui

Onto another popular place to stay on Maui, South Maui. From Kihei to Makena, we have you covered with the best things to do on Maui.

Beaches, restaurants, and surf spots will keep you busy in South Maui. But, South Maui is best for being a launching pad to explore Maui, like Central and Upcountry Maui.

Check out the Google Map below for the best things to do in South Maui.

If this list is feeling overwhelming, then let us plan your perfect Hawaii vacation. In our Maui Wayfinder Itinerary, choose from 8 excursion days that have these things to do on Maui, plus many more. Learn more below.

10. South Maui Gardens

Come for the food, stay for the atmosphere. South Maui Gardens is a full-scale plant nursery and community garden space on 7 tropical acres in the heart of Kihei.

Visit the Thursday Farmer’s Market, sit by the butterfly garden, or meet George the tortoise. We like to visit the coffee shop and the lunch trucks. See our video below as South Maui Gardens made our Unique Maui Food Experiences list.

Directions: 35 Auhana Rd, Kihei, HI 96753

11. Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Visitor Center

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center is an education center, art gallery, and research facility.

This place is worth your time during whale season as it is an excellent place to view the whales from shore and participate in discussions about the humpback whales who visit Maui every year.

Directions: 726 S Kihei Rd, Kihei, HI 96753

12. Learn to Surf

Cove Beach Park in Kihei is a great place to learn how to surf. The slow rolling waves make this an ideal place for locals and first-time surfers to learn the ancient Hawaiian tradition.

Rent a board across the street from the cove or sign up for a surf lesson .

Directions: Cove Beach Park 2126 Iliili Rd, Kihei, HI 96753

13. Kamaole Beach III

Kihei has a 1.5-mile stretch of sandy beach that spreads down the coast that is divided into three beach parks.

Kamaole Beach III is our favorite for snorkeling, swimming, swings for our son, and restroom facilities. There is also a large grassy area with shade trees and lifeguards on duty.

Directions: Kamaole Beach III S Kihei Rd, Kihei, HI 96753

In our experience, Kihei can get windy in the afternoon, more than West Maui, as the trade winds pick up. We recommend hitting the beach in Kihei in the morning and early afternoon.

maui things to do Kamaole Beach III

14. Makena Landing for Sea Turtles

Makena Landing is a small beach park that is popular with scuba tours. It is also known as Turtle Town.

You can walk from the beach into the water for great snorkeling with sea turtles. Head left around the point or right to find the turtles. Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are an endangered species so it is against the law to touch them. Stay 10 feet away when in the water.

Directions: 5083 Makena Rd, Kihei, HI 96753

Turtle Town is also a popular site for tour boats. Many tours go to Molokini Crater and then Turtle Town as Molokini doesn’t have turtles. Our favorite Molokini Crater and Turtle Town tour leaves directly from Maluaka Beach, south of Wailea.

If Kihei is going to be your home base we have you covered with even more to do , where to eat , and the best vacation rentals in the area.

15. Secret Cove Beach (Makena Cove)

Secret Cove is the place to go for sunset, engagements, and wedding vow renewal in South Maui. This picture-perfect cove can be found through a narrow opening in a lava rock wall.

We like to visit for sunset, family pictures, and whale watching in the winter. Find a reason to go to Makena Cove during your Maui vacation.

Directions: Makena Cove off Makena Road

Things to Do in Central Maui

Central Maui isn’t known for things to do on Maui but perhaps it deserves your attention. This is where you’ll land if you’re coming by plane or where you’ll dock if you’re coming by cruise ship . Here are our favorite activities in Central Maui. At a minimum, don’t skip the food trucks!

16. `Iao Valley State Monument

‘Iao Valley State Monument is home to the ‘Iao Needle, a 1,200-foot erosional feature in a magnificent valley. Come to walk the 0.6 miles to the observation deck, see waterfalls, explore the botanical garden, and learn the history of the decisive Hawaiian battle that made the river turn red. Confirm their opening hours and entrance fees here .

Directions: 54 S High St, Wailuku, HI 96793

17. Costco Food Truck Park

Many visitors flock to Costco to fill their vacation rental upon arrival in Maui, or their gas tank when leaving Maui. We recommend going to Costco for the food trucks.

There are two food truck parks located across the street from Costco. They feature some of the best chef’s on Maui, the freshest ingredients, and something for the whole family.

Our Ultimate Maui Food Truck Guide will show you how to find all the best food truck parks on Maui. We also have a Kauai Food Truck Guide if you’re thinking of island-hopping .

18. Farm-to-Table Cafe

The small town of Wailuku in Central Maui has a lot of great restaurants but our favorite is a food truck and fruit stand on the way to Waihe’e Ridge Trail . Ula’Ula Cafe has a large menu of Hawaiian and local dishes.

The staff is super friendly, the picnic tables are in the shade, and you will have a hard time deciding what to eat. Most of the ingredients are sourced from the local farm, the remainder is from the island.

Directions: Ula’Ula Cafe 1765 Kahekili Hwy, Wailuku, HI 96793

19. Waihe’e Ridge Trail

Waihe’e Ridge Trail is one of our favorite moderate hikes on Maui. The 4 mile out and back hike takes you up a steep ridgeline to 1,600 feet. The trail can get muddy and slippery as you are now on the wet side of the island.

Enjoy the impressive views of the West Maui Mountains and the ocean as you make the climb.

Directions: Waihe’e Ridge Trailhead

Things to Do in North Maui

North Shore Maui is known for Mama’s Fish House and big wave surfing at Pe’ahi or Jaws. Many people drive right through here as they start the Road to Hana but let’s show you things to do on Maui here.

20. Historic Paia Town

Home to celebrities, yogis, and local families, Paia is an old surfing and plantation town on Maui’s North Shore. We enjoy walking the town to check out the stores, restaurants, and shave ice. Below are some of our favorites worth checking out.

  • Paia Fish Market – fish sandwiches and fish plates
  • Mana Foods – grocery store with deli
  • Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice
  • Paia Bay Coffee Bar
  • Mele Ukulele

Directions: Paia, Maui

Paia is small but has a rush hour due to the Road to Hana. It is best to avoid the town in the late morning and late afternoon.

21. Sea Turtles Resting on the Beach

A hidden gem of a beach is Kaulahao Beach just past Paia Town. Come here for a large beach without the crowds. We come to see the sea turtles climb onto the beach for some rest and sunshine.

Please stay 30 feet away from the turtles onshore as they need their rest.

Directions: Kaulahao Beach

22. Ho’okipa Beach

Famous for sea turtles and windsurfing, Ho’okipa Beach Park makes for a nice day at the beach or come at sunset to see the sea turtles. After a long day on the Road to Hana, this is the place to unwind at sunset.

There is also Ho’okipa Lookout at the park. The lookout has sweeping views of the North Shore coastline, surfers down below, and windsurfers out on the deeper break.

Directions: Hookipa Beach Park 179 Hana Hwy, Paia, HI 96779

23. Waterfall Swim at Twin Falls

Twin Falls at Wailele Farms is a private waterfall hike along a stream. The stream has three major waterfalls that are all great swimming holes. The famous Twin Falls is the last one on the short hike.

Wailele Farms manages and maintains the property. They also host a fruit stand with the best banana bread on Maui. To care for the ‘aina (land), they charge $10 for parking. It is best to visit mid-day when you can miss the Road to Hana crowds.

Directions: 6300 Hana Hwy, Haiku, HI 96708

We have a full day dedicated to North Shore Maui in our Maui Wayfinder Itinerary. We will take you on a perfect day out as part of our 8 excursion days. Learn more below.

Things to Do in Upcountry Maui

Upcountry Maui is the place to escape the crowds along the coast. Cool off on the slopes of Haleakala for the day. Explore our 15 Amazing Things to Do in Upcountry for more ideas!

Upcountry is a residential area of Maui. Be considerate on the roads by driving the speed limit and parking legally.

24. Historic Makawao Town

After Lahaina, Makawao is our place to be. The historic cowboy (paniolo in Hawaiian) town has art galleries, coffee shops, and the best donuts on a stick on Maui at Komoda Store and Bakery.

Park the car and walk this small town before you start your day in Upcountry Maui. Here are places worth exploring.

  • Espresso Mafia
  • Komoda Store and Bakery – malasadas and donuts
  • The Maui Cookie Lady
  • Rodeo General Store
  • Makawao Marketplace – food trucks and crafts

Directions: Makawao, Maui

25. Haleakalā National Park

Maui erupted out of the sea from two volcanoes over a million years ago. Today, no trip to Maui is complete without seeing the summit of the dormant volcano Haleakala (House of the Sun).

Haleakala National Park is best known for its sunrise tour (which lives up to the hype) but the National Park is also worth a day trip to see the endangered state bird the Nene, stand on the 10,023-foot summit, or hike into the crater for the adventurous travelers. You can check out all of our favorite Haleakala sunrise tours here .

26. Maui Wine Tasting

MauiWine started making wine on the Ulupalakua Ranch in 1974. As the vines were ripening, they started making sparkling pineapple wine. It was a hit and today you can taste a selection of wines from The King’s Cottage tasting room.

Located at the end of Upcountry, we like to pair MauiWine with the farm-to-table cafe at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store. After a long day of exploring Upcountry Maui , grab a burger or sandwich from the ranch store and then head across the street for wine tasting.

Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Things to Do on the Road to Hana

I hope I haven’t kept you waiting. The Road to Hana is one of the most popular things to do on Maui. We share our perfect day for exploring the Road to Hana in our Maui itineraries . But, we can’t help but share some of our favorite stops below.

You can do the Road to Hana in one day with our tips , stay the night in Hana , drive straight to Hana and then do the stops on the way back, or drive the backway to Hana (video) .

The only wrong way to do the Road to Hana is to park illegally, swim on private property, and not let locals pass. Yes, there is a Road to Hana etiquette as the road gets busy. We want this beautiful drive to stay open for years to come so stay safe out there.

Here is another one of our Road to Hana videos, this one showcases eight stops.

We have driven the Road to Hana numerous times but my favorite time was when someone else did the driving for me.

A guided tour will secure the reservations at the black sand beach, take you for a waterfall swim, and stop at the best stops based on the time of year. Save 10% on our recommended, local Road to Hana tour guide .

27. Keanae Peninsula

Located on an ancient lava field that was converted to taro fields by ancient Hawaiians, Keanae Peninsula is a beautiful stop to stretch your legs. Take in the views of the coastline, walk the lava field, and have some banana bread.

Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread is a local favorite. You will be hungry so make sure you stop. She is closed on Sundays, so go to Halfway to Hana roadside stand just down the road from Keanae Peninsula.

Directions: Aunty Sandy’s 210 Keanae Rd, Ke‘Anae, HI 96708

Things to do on Maui - Road to Hana waterfall swim

28. Road to Hana Waterfall Swim

This is our favorite waterfall swim on the Road to Hana. As we describe in our Road to Hana Waterfall Swim video , diving into a waterfall is dangerous. Flash floods, changing water depths, weather, and private property make waterfall swims risky.

Hence, we usually go to Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside Park. While swimming here is still risky, especially during the rainy season in the winter, the water hole, the three waterfalls, and the park make this a wonderful stop.

Directions: Hana Hwy, Haiku, HI 96708

If you want to check out all the best waterfalls on Maui we have that list for you !

29. Maui’s Best Black Sand Beach

Wai’anapanapa Black Sand Beach is the best black sand beach on Maui. Located just before Hana Town, the Wai’anapanapa State Park has a blowhole, black sand beach, lava cave, short hiking trails, and camping in tents or cabins . The park is a welcome retreat on the Hana Highway and one of those only in Hawaii-type places.

Reservations are now required to enter so plan in advance or book a guided tour .

Directions: Wai’anapanapa Black Sand Beach

30. Pipiwai Trail with the Bamboo Forest

The Pipiwai Trail is famous on social media for the pictures of the boardwalk through the bamboo forest. The trail is part of the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park.

maui things to do road to hana pipiwai trail.jpg

Located 10 miles (35 minutes) past Hana, the park is home to the Pipiwai Trail, Waimoku Falls, ‘Ohe’o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools), and camping. Plan about 2 hours to hike the easy to moderate Pipiwai Trail. The waterfall views and the walks through the bamboo forest are out of this world.

If you visited Haleakala National Park then keep your receipt as you can visit the Kipahulu District within three days.

Visiting Maui FAQs

How many days should you spend on maui.

The average visitor spends 8.1 days on Maui, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. And that number feels right. While you can spend as few as five days here if you’re island hopping, we think you need at least a full week to really enjoy this island.

Read more about how long you should plan to stay on Maui and what factors should influence your decision.

What is Maui best known for?

Maui is our favorite Hawaiian island (which is why we lived there for three years) and there is no shortage of things to do there. Some of the things Maui is best known for include:

  • The Road to Hana: 600+ remote hairpin turns take you to the remote east side of the island. Enjoy waterfalls, lush scenery, and the beautiful coastline on this drive.
  • Whale watching: you can whale watch on any of the Hawaiian islands, but Maui is the best. With most of the 10,000 + whales that travel down to Hawaii each year ending up in the warm waters of the ‘Au ‘au channel off the coast of Maui, this is the place to head for seeing the majestic humpback whales. Read our full whale watching guide.
  • Molokini Crater snorkeling: Just three miles off the coast of Maui is Molokini Crater, a partially submerged volcanic crater. This is a very popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. These are our favorite tours

Things to do on Maui for kids?

Having spent three years on Maui with our toddler, we searched far and wide to find the best things to do on Maui with kids. We have a full list of 68 things to do on Maui with kids (organized by age, from baby to teen). Some ideas to get you started include:

Things to do on Maui for couples?

While we love spending time on Maui with our kids, it’s also such a romantic place to visit! There is no shortage of things to do, whether you’re on a honeymoon, an anniversary trip, or just a fabulous vacation with the person you love.

Some of our favorite romantic things to do on Maui include:

  • Farm to table lunch: Head to O’o Farm in upcountry to enjoy a true farm to table lunch. Start the day by taking a tour of the farm then head up to the tables for a view and a multi-course lunch. Bring a bottle of wine and enjoy the laid back dining experience.
  • Stay at an adults-only resort: Enjoy your vacation at the only adults only hotel in Hawaii, Hotel Wailea . (If you’re looking for more places to stay, visit our Where to Stay database for reviews!)
  • Sunset cruise: Take to the ocean for a sunset cruise. During our babymoon, we enjoyed this adventure sunset cruise . We had a beautiful sunset, great pupus, and fun live music.
  • Book a beachfront dinner: Book a beachfront or private dinner for a romantic night out. See our list of the best private dining and beachfront restaurants .
  • Take a private cruise: Sunset sail, snorkeling trip, or whale watching gets that much more special when it’s on a private boat. Treat yourself to a private charter sailboat and design your day out.

Things to do on Maui on a budget?

There is so much you can do on Maui if you’re on a budget. Some of the best things to do on Maui are free or low-cost. Some budget friendly ideas to get you started include:

  • Hiking: while most of the hiking on Maui isn’t through a lush rainforest, there are still some wonderful trails. Check out ‘Iao Valley State Park for a short walk, Pipiwai Trail in the Kipahulu District, or Sliding Sands Trail in Haleakala National Park.
  • Feast at the Food Trucks: Maui has some of the best food in Hawaii and some of the best food on Maui can be found at the food trucks. Check out our food truck article for our top picks.
  • Maui Wine: cruise through beautiful upcountry Maui and grab a burger at Ulupalakua Ranch General Store and then head across the street to Maui Wine for a glass of pineapple wine. We have a full list of more things to do in upcountry Maui .
  • Hit the beach: Maui has some of the best beaches in the world and a beach day is either free or very low cost (depending on if you need to pay for parking). Check out our list of the best beaches on Maui and pick your favorite for a low-cost beach day.

What Should You Not Do on Maui?

There are a few things you should avoid doing when you visit Maui or any of the Hawaiian islands:

  • Don’t crowd sea turtles or monk seals : Both of these amazing animals are protected marine life, so it’s illegal to get too close or harass them. Admire them from afar and let them have their space.
  • Don’t venture past ‘do not enter’ signs: These signs are there for a reason, but we often see people disregarding them. The signs are either keeping you off private property or warning you that danger exists beyond the sign.
  • Don’t use any old sunscreen: Protecting the coral reef is a high priority in Hawaii, so make sure you’re wearing the right sunscreen. Mineral based sunscreen is the only type permitted on Maui. If you’re not sure you’re bringing the right sunscreen, just wait and buy when you arrive. They only sell sunscreen that is legal to use in Hawaii.
  • Don’t forget to make reservations: Heading up Haleakala for sunrise ? Or hoping to sink your feet into the sand at Waianapanapa? Better have your reservation ready! This also goes for going out to eat at some of the island’s most popular restaurants (including Mama’s ). Don’t worry, we also make sure to tell you when reservations are required in our itinerary .
  • Don’t assume ocean conditions are the same day to day: the Pacific Ocean is incredibly strong and the waves and currents on Maui can get fierce (and dangerous). Make sure you check ocean conditions before you head out and check lifeguard flags altering you to any warnings. Hawaii Beach Safety shares real-time ocean conditions on some popular beaches.
  • Don’t rush your vacation: Slow down, this isn’t the mainland! I know you are so excited to experience all that Maui has to offer, but make sure you give yourself time to breathe. Slow down, watch the sunset (and the sunrise!), take a walk, listen to the very vocal birds. This is such a special place and you are making memories that will last a lifetime. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that will imprint in your brain — so stop and take it all in!

17 Epic Places in Hawaii You Have to See Because Photos Don’t Do Them Justice

' src=

Hawaii may be expensive, but for a paradise on Earth to be a part of America, it’s a dream for many to shell out the big bucks to fly over Waimea Valley or swim with the whale sharks.

The Aloha State was the site of one of my very first family vacations, but I’ve since gone back to backpack it for more than a month. Comprising of eight main islands, you’ll have to pick and choose which beautiful place you want to visit, but there’s always next time.

For anyone seeking a slice of island life, here’s a carefully curated list of the 17 most beautiful places in Hawaii that will make you want to pack your bags and head to the islands immediately. Get ready to explore hidden gems, iconic landmarks, and everything in between!

1. Na Pali Coastline, Kauai

Sunset at the Na Pali Coast (Kalalau) Trail, Hāʻena State Park, Kauai, Hawaii

The Na Pali Coastline inspired the scenery in movies like “Jurassic Park.” The coastline stretches 17 miles along the island’s northwest with melodramatic sea cliffs, emerald valleys, and waterfalls that cascade into deep, narrow gorges.

One popular way to experience this beauty is by hiking the very tough trail of Kalalau, a very difficult feat especially when muddy. Adventurous souls can also take a boat tour or a helicopter ride.

2. Waimea Canyon State Park, Kauai

Stunning aerial view into Waimea Canyon, Kauai, one of the most Beautiful Places in Hawaii

Waimea Canyon State Park is often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” but just with a lot more rainforest and water. This impressive massive canyon extends about 10 miles long and plunges over 3,000 feet deep. The layered reds, browns, and greens of the canyon walls change color with the shifting light.

A favorite spot to catch these views is the Waimea Canyon Lookout, where you can see the canyon in all its glory. The Canyon Trail leads along the pass, complete with a waterfall at the end.

3. Wailua Falls, Kauai

Couple tourists at Hawaii Kauai waterfall. Tourist visiting the Wailua Falls of Kauai Hawaii, hiking nature mountain vacation USA travel.

Wailua Falls is a double waterfall that plunges 80 feet into a pool below. The best thing is that the falls are easily accessible and can be viewed from a lookout right off the road. Early risers can catch the falls bathed in the soft glow of the morning sun, sometimes creating a beautiful rainbow in the mist.

You can hike down to the base of the falls, but be prepared for a challenging trek. Swimming in the refreshing pool at the bottom is a perfect way to cool off.

4. Diamond Head, Oahu

Aerial view of Diamondhead, Kapahulu, Kahala, Pacific ocean on Oahu, Hawaii. April 2016

Diamond Head on Oahu is one of Hawaii’s most iconic landmarks. This volcanic tuff cone is a moderately challenging hike that rewards you with sweeping panoramic views of Honolulu and the vast Pacific Ocean.

The trail to the summit is just under a mile, but it includes steep stairs and dark tunnels that add to the adventure. Once at the top, you’ll find an old military bunker and a vantage point perfect for snapping photos. The hike is best done early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and crowds.

5. Koko Head Crater Hike, Oahu

Ridge view of Koko Crater hike in Oahu Hawaii

The Koko Head Crater Hike on Oahu is another crater and my favorite hike I have done in Hawaii. This hike involves climbing nearly 1,050 railroad-tie steps, which were originally part of a tramway used during World War II.

The ascent is steep and can be grueling, but at the summit, you can see the whole southeastern coast of Oahu, including Hanauma Bay and the Koolau Mountains. We even took the lesser-used backdoor ridge trail down for more coastline views.

6. Valley of the Temples, Oahu

Bridge leading to temple in Valley of the Temples, Oahu

Valley of the Temples is a cemetery with a Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a nearly 1000-year-old Buddhist temple in Japan. At the base of the Ko’olau Mountains, the temple is surrounded by luxuriant gardens, koi ponds, and zen streams.

Visitors can ring the three-ton brass peace bell before entering the temple, which is said to bring happiness and blessings. Inside, a towering golden Buddha statue exudes calm and peace.

7. Haleakalā National Park, Maui

Sunrise at Haleakalā National Park, a must on a day trip in Maui

Haleakalā National Park is home to the enormous Haleakalā Crater. The crater stretches 7 miles across and 2,600 feet deep covered in cinder cones, lava rock, and stark desert terrain.

One of the most popular activities here is catching the sunrise from the summit, which sits over 10,000 feet above sea level. Afterward, explore the Sliding Sands Trail, which takes you down into the crater.

8. Road to Hana, Maui

Old yellow school bus. Road to Hana, Maui, Hawaii, USA

The Road to Hana on Maui is a winding 64-mile road that takes you from Kahului to the quaint town of Hana, with countless stops along the way. You’ll pass by overgrown rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and ocean vistas.

Some must-see spots include the Twin Falls, Wailua Valley State Wayside, and the black sand beach at Wai’anapanapa State Park. The journey can take a whole day, especially if you stop frequently to take in the sights.

9. Molokini Crater, Maui

Aerial View of Hawaii, Molokini crater, Maui, Wiki

Molokini Crater off the coast of Maui is a snorkeler’s paradise with crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. This crescent-shaped islet is actually the submerged rim of an ancient volcanic crater.

The visibility under the water can exceed 150 feet making it easy to see everything from parrotfish, butterflyfish, and even some harmless reef sharks. Boat tours from Maui usually include all the gear you need, plus a knowledgeable guide to point out interesting sea creatures.

10. Iao Valley State Park, Maui

Iao Valley State Park, one of the best things to do in Maui, Hawaii

Iao Valley State Park is famous for its leafy landscapes and the iconic Iao Needle, a 1,200-foot tall rock pinnacle. This natural landmark is surrounded by a valley filled with tropical plants and rushing streams. The park is relatively easy to explore, with paved paths and informative signs.

It was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790, where King Kamehameha fought to unite the Hawaiian Islands.

11. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Big Island

the chain of craters road running through the devastated lava field expanse on a one day in volcano national park itinerary

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. You can walk through lava tubes, witness steaming vents, and, if you’re lucky, see actual lava flows. Drive down the Chain of Craters Road to where the ocean where lava meets the sea. Hiking trails like the Kīlauea Iki Trail take you across a hardened lava lake.

12. Mauna Kea Observatories, Big Island

Road to Mauna Kea Observatories Hawaii

Although the observatory itself is nothing to gawk at, Mauna Kea Observatories has some of the best stargazing opportunities in the world. At an elevation of 13,796 feet, the summit is completely dark and free from light pollution.

The observatories themselves are cutting-edge facilities used by astronomers globally to study the universe. Visitors can participate in stargazing tours or nightly stargazing programs.

Remember to dress warmly; temperatures can drop significantly at high altitudes.

13. Papakolea Green Sand Beach, Big Island

Papakōlea Green Sand Beach with blue waters

Papakolea Green Sand Beach is a rare geological gem and one of only four green sand beaches in the world. The distinctive green hue comes from olivine crystals eroded from a nearby volcanic cinder cone.

Reaching the beach requires a bit of effort, involving either a rugged 2.5-mile hike or a bumpy ride in a 4WD vehicle. The payoff is a secluded, stunning beach with unique green sands contrasted by deep blue waters. The remote location also means it’s never crowded.

14. Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, Big Island

palm trees on the volcanic ground of Puʻuhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park

I surprisingly loved Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park on my trip to the Big Island . Aside from learning about Hawaiian culture, I think it was built on absolutely gorgeous land. The park features restored temples, fishponds, and carved wooden statues known as kii.

This sacred site once served as a place of refuge for those who broke kapu, the ancient Hawaiian laws. If offenders could reach the pu’uhonua, they would be absolved of their crimes.

At some stations, some locals have set up demonstrations or cultural workshops. I saw a man open a raw coconut in 30 seconds without a machete. That’s some skills.

15. Waipio Valley, Big Island

Overlook in Hawaii, Waipio Valley, Big Island

Waipio Valley on the Big Island is often referred to as the “Valley of the Kings,” and it is epic. This steep valley is dotted with waterfalls, taro fields, and dense tropical vegetation that dive straight into the ocean.

The steep road down into the valley requires a 4WD vehicle or a challenging overnight hike. Hiilawe Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in Hawaii, cascades over 1,000 feet into the valley below.

16. Garden of the Gods, Lanai

family of two, father and son, hiking in keahiakawelo, beautiful rock garden at lanai island, hawaii, family active vacation concept

Garden of the Gods on Lanai is a striking, otherworldly landscape that looks more like Mars than Hawaii. Erosion over thousands of years has sculpted this array of rock formations into unique shapes of shades of red, orange, and purple.

The drive to get there is an adventure in itself, requiring a 4WD vehicle to navigate the rough terrain.

17. Halawa Valley, Molokai

The green landscapes of Halawa Valley, Molokai Hawai

Halawa Valley is a lush valley that has been inhabited for over 1,300 years and is rich with ancient Hawaiian cultural sites. Guided tours by local families take you to heiau (temples) and taro patches. The highlight of any visit is the hike to Moaula Falls, a 250-foot waterfall nestled deep within the valley.

Common Slang And Phrases Tourists Should Really Know Before A Vacation To Hawaii

Double rainbow in Hawaii

Hawaii is a popular holiday destination packed with remarkable attractions . However, before you board a plane to the Aloha State , you should be aware of several words and phrases within the Hawaiian language. While "Aloha" is a pretty universal term, it barely scratches the surface regarding the 'Ōlelo Hawai'i — the official term for the indigenous Hawaiian language. 'Ōlelo Hawai'i is recognized as the official language of the islands (along with English) and is an important part of connecting the present with Hawaii's Polynesian roots.

Hawaiians have consistently fought to preserve their ancient language, as the United States banned speaking it in 1896. It would be nearly a century before the native Hawaiian language would be reintroduced into the education system and recognized as an official language. Since then, native Hawaiians have been playing catch up — teaching 'Ōlelo Hawai'i in public schools and launching programs to preserve and protect the indigenous language for future generations.

Tourists traveling to the islands should be aware that respecting the "'Āina" (the Hawaiian word for "land") means opening one's mind, body, and soul to the culture and tradition permeating throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Knowing some important words and phrases in the 'Ōlelo Hawai'i language shows respect for Hawaiians and their land, which is considered sacred. That might sound daunting, but fear not — we're breaking down a guide to some everyday slang and frequent phrases tourists should know before heading to paradise.

Give thanks with the word 'mahalo'

An aerial view of Kalalau Valley

One essential word to know before visiting Hawaii is "mahalo" (pronounced like mah-hah-loh), the Hawaiian word for thank you. "Mahalo" is used as a way to show gratitude, respect, or admiration for something someone has given to or done for you. Tourists can use it as often as they'd like, whether they're making purchases or thanking a server, but Hawaiian visitors should know that "Mahalo" has a more profound meaning than "thank you" alone — it's also used as an all-encompassing appreciation for one's surroundings or the people close to them.

"Mahalo" is derived from the Proto-Polynesian word "Masalo," and was introduced into Hawaiian culture only after the native people came into contact with Western civilization. The earliest record of the word "mahalo" being used was in the 1890s when a New York journalist recorded hearing it being used in a transaction. Before then, ancient Hawaiians had no word for "thank you," as gratitude was deeply rooted in the culture and didn't need to be expressed in words.

'A hui hou' is another way to say goodbye

A woman waves on a beach

To say "goodbye" in Hawaii is to say "a hui hou," a phrase tourists will most likely hear often during their trip to the Hawaiian Islands. "A hui hou" (pronunciation ah-hoo-wee ho) translates to "until we meet again" and is another way of saying  see you soon. Saying goodbye in Hawaii is packed with superstition, as Hawaiians traditionally avoid implying that they may never see friends or loved ones again. "A hui hou" avoids that finality and is a way of parting ways while alluding to a future reunion.

"A hui hou" is also an important part of funeral traditions for Hawaiians. Family is incredibly significant to the Hawaiian people, and is universally considered the foundation of their culture. Because of this, when parting ways or paying respects at funerals, Hawaiians use "a hui hou" to express that they will be reunited with their loved ones in the afterlife.

'Honu' refers to the Hawaiian green sea turtle

A green sea turtle underwater

If you're lucky enough during your visit to the Hawaiian Islands, you might come across a "honu" (pronounced like hoe-new) — a Hawaiian green sea turtle. As Hawaii's most spotted sea turtle species, these marine reptiles are commonly spotted sunbathing at Laniakea Beach on Oahu or at Ho'okipa Beach Park, one of the best beaches on Maui . Honu are immensely revered and respected in Hawaiian culture, and the term itself dates back to ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs. Legend has it that Hawaiian hero 'Ai'ai drew a honu by making marks onto a rock near the ocean, and these animals are thought to be the eternal link between humans, land, and the sea.

Because of their long life span (some turtles live up to 80 years), honu symbolize longevity, security, and good fortune. The honu also represent "mana," which is the term for spiritual energy in the Hawaiian language. These Hawaiian green sea turtles go hand in hand with the "'aumakua" or "ancestor gods," and are thought to be a form of ancestral spirit that helps to guide and protect the native Hawaiian people.

'Ono Grinds' is the perfect phrase for serious foodies

A colorful Hawaiian poke bowl

For tourists interested in trying all the incredible local food the Hawaiian Islands offer, "'ono grinds" (pronounced oh-no grinds) is a commonly used term meaning delicious food. The phrase is an everyday slang word from Hawaiian pidgin, which originated on the islands as early as the 1800s. Hawaiian pidgin has its roots in sugarcane plantations and was born out of a need for Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, and English workers to be able to communicate.

"'Ono grinds" can be used separately or together — "'ono" describes something especially tasty, and "grinds" means food or a meal. Tourists may see the word "ono" used without the 'okina mark, which is sometimes referred to as a reverse apostrophe but officially known as a consonant in the Hawaiian language. The word "ono" without the 'okina means a mackerel-like fish commonly served on Hawaiian menus.

'Ohana' was used long before Lilo & Stitch made it famous

Maui's Secret Beach and vegetation

You may have heard the term "'ohana" (pronounced oh-ha-nah) used in Disney's "Lilo & Stitch." The word means family in Hawaiian, and it also signifies that no member of one's "'ohana,"— blood relatives or chosen family — gets left behind. In Hawaiian culture, family is of utmost importance, and families often live together in multi-generational homes. Tourists may meet Hawaiians residing with their "'ohana," or parents and grandparents under the same roof.

The word "'ohana" stems from the Hawaiian word for "'oha," the stalk of a Taro plant. These root vegetables were introduced by Polynesians centuries ago and remain a huge part of Hawaiian culture. The Hawaiian term "ana" means procreation, and "'ohana" carries the significance of planning for future generations.

'Shoots' is a way of agreeing

Woman in fuchsia bikini

Another term tourists might hear often in Hawaii is "shoots." The word is used as a term of agreement or instead of the word "okay." The term comes from Hawaiian Pidgin and is another way of expressing, "sounds good; let's do it."

"Shoots" can also be used in the form of a question. Hawaiians may use the term to confirm plans or say something like, "Let's grab some 'ono grinds, shoots?" Whatever the occasion, the word is often accompanied by an iconic Hawaiian Shaka sign (dictated in the photo above), which loosely means "right on" and is thought to be the ultimate hand gesture showing the Aloha Spirit.

Respect the ''āina'

Waterfall and greenery in Hawaii

An essential word in the Hawaiian language is "'āina," which means land. Hawaiians treat their environment and surroundings with devotion, as they are another sacred part of their culture. While visiting the islands, tourists may find signs that ask them to clean up their trash out of respect for the "'āina." In addition to "'āina," you may also see the phrase "Malama 'āina," which means taking care of or honoring the land.

Hawaiians have a deep appreciation for their "'āina," and sustainability is a concept deeply rooted in their culture. Tourists traveling to the Aloha State should be familiar with the idea of "Aloha 'āina," which means having a love for the land. Hawaiians believe that caring for their environment is reciprocal and that the land will give back to those who nurture it.

'Aunty' and 'unko' are used by locals to describe any individual older than themselves

Older woman carrying a child

Tourists may hear Hawaiians or Hawaii residents referring to individuals older than them as "aunty" or "uncle." These terms are typical Pidgin words and show respect in Hawaiian culture. "Aunties" or "uncles" don't have to be blood-related to the individual in question, and they are used quite often on the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii.com posted an example of how the words might be used. The example reads: "Hey aunty how are you doing? Is unko Silva still working at Pearl Harbor?" The word "uncle" in Hawaii may also be shortened to the local slang version "unko," which drops the "le" sound.

The term 'kama'āina' differentiates tourists from locals

Hawaiians working on surfboards

One term that separates tourists from locals in Hawaii is "kamaʻāina," (pronunciation ka-muh-ai-nah). The word refers to a native Hawaiian or someone living on the islands for a long time. Often, tourists will find there are special discounts listed in restaurants, shopping malls, or tourism activities for those considered "kamaʻāina."

First recorded in the early 1900s, the word literally translates to "native-born." The meaning is clearer if you break apart the word. "Kama" signifies a child or person, while "'āina" translates to land or earth.

'Kapu' means stay out

Sign reading 'kapu' by tropical plants

Tourists interested in trying one of the many daring hikes in Hawaii ( one of which was so notorious that it has since been shut down ) may find the signs displaying the word "kapu" (pronounced kah-poo). The term means keep out or forbidden in the Hawaiian language. It is often placed on signs in front of blocked-off areas or paths not intended for the public.

"Kapu" also means sacred in Hawaiian culture, and the term was commonly used in ancient times to designate specific religious temples or highly revered sites. Centuries ago, the kapu system was a set of regulations in Hawaiian for each social class that natives were expected to follow. The system was no longer in use by the early 1900s, but the significance behind the word remains.

'Kāne' and 'Wahine' are gender terms

A sign for women in Hawaii

Sticking with practical terms, tourists in Hawaii should learn the words "wahine" and "kāne. " These words refer to woman and man, respectively. Signs for different bathrooms often have these terms written, but it's not guaranteed that the translation will be included.

To avoid an awkward encounter, it's best to get familiar with these gender terms. "Don't go into the bathroom marked wahine, Richard. You want the one that says kāne," via ( Hawaii.com ). Of course, many bathroom signs come with helpful pictures, but it is best to be as prepared as possible.

If you bring kids to Hawaii, they are considered 'keiki'

Family walks on beach at sunset

Parents traveling to the Aloha State may find the Hawaiian word "keiki" useful. The term translates to "kid" or "kids," and is often seen written on signs across the islands. Visitors may stumble across a "slow down, keiki at play" street sign, a bumper sticker that says "keiki on board," or even a designated "keiki menu."

"Keiki" isn't just used for children, whether visitors or Hawaiians. The term can also be used for young animals, like cubs or colts, or even a sprouting taro or banana plant. However, tourists will find it more commonly used to describe human children.

'Pau hana' is a phrase often used for 'happy hour'

Colorful cocktails in Hawaii

Those looking to get in a fresh Mai Tai or cocktail to watch the sun go down in Hawaii may come across the words "Pau Hana"(pronounced pow-hah-nah). The term is the Hawaiian expression for being finished at work for the day, and restaurants or bars often use "happy hour" and "pau hana" interchangeably. Either way, it means a good time is on the way.

"Pau hana" is a Pidgin slang term, coming from the Hawaiian words "pau" ("to finish") and "hana" ("to work"). Visitors may hear the expression as a question, like "When do you pau hana?" (per the Poipu Beach Foundation ). Other times, "pau hana" can be an invitation, for example, a friend inviting someone for after-work drinks.

Flip-flops are called 'slippahs' by Hawaiians

Flip-flops and sunglasses on a beach

An interesting word in the Hawaiian Pidgin vocabulary for tourists to learn is the term "slippers," most often pronounced "slippahs." However, the word doesn't refer to shoes worn around the house, but the ones you wear on Hawaii's breathtaking beaches . They are a commonly used form of footwear by visitors and locals alike. So much so that the footwear brand "Locals" is famous for making cheap "slippahs" that are sold in convenience stores across the islands.

In Hawaii, it is respectful to leave your "slippers" at the door of someone else's house before going inside. Hawaiians use the term to describe not only flip flops but sandals as well, and they are widely accepted on most occasions. From the beach to the market or even a fancier eatery, no one is quick to judge when it comes to Hawaiians and their casual footwear.

To 'Talk Story' is to have a conversation or catch up with someone

men walking on a Hawaiian beach

If you happen to see two locals catching up with each other, the proper term to describe it in the Aloha State is to "talk story." The Pidgin phrase refers to any type of conversation with friends, new or old, or even strangers. "Talk story" translates to "chat informally" or "shoot the breeze," and tourists may hear the expression used quite frequently amongst the "kamaʻāina."

The phrase developed in the 1960s and was built on the importance of storytelling in Hawaiian culture. Because there was often no way to record or write down historical events of the islands in ancient times, information was passed by word of mouth. Because of this, to "talk story" in Hawaii is to exercise a native tradition that honors the past while keeping in time with the news of the present.

Want an encore? 'Hana hou!' is the term for you

People playing instruments and singing in Waikiki

A useful phrase to know while visiting the Hawaiian Islands is the expression "hana hou" (pronounced ha-nuh-ho). This phrase means "to do again" in the Hawaiian language. This term is often used when a crowd asks for a singer or band to perform an encore. Hearing the words "hana hou" is a sign that the entertainment was successful and the person is asking for another song or act. Music is everywhere in Hawaii, so get ready to say "hana hou" loud and proud.

'Hale' is a gathering place in Hawaiian

Adults enjoying an outdoor meal

Tourists in Hawaii may hear the word "hale" (pronunciation hah-leh) used fairly often. This is the Hawaiian word for a house or home. Hawaiians are fabulously friendly, so don't be surprised if new friends invite you to their "hale."

However, "hale" can also be used for gathering spaces and isn't limited to just living quarters. Events may be held at different "hales," designated areas for hosting large groups of people. Expanded terms in Hawaiian that include "hale" are "hale 'aina" (which translates to an eating establishment) or "hale pule," which means church.

Don't confuse 'Lāna'i' with 'Lānai'

Hulopo'e Beach in Lānai

Two terms not to get confused with while visiting the Aloha state are "Lāna'i" and "Lānai." The word for porch, balcony, or veranda in the Hawaiian language is "lānai," while "Lāna'i" refers to the Hawaiian island located not far off the coast of Maui. "Lānais" are typically covered structures, representing an important aspect of Hawaiian culture, providing a space for conversation and gatherings.

"A lānai is an important extension of the home in Hawaii, serving as a transition from the house to the garden," interior designer and Hawaii resident Breeze Giannasio explained to  House Beautiful . "From a kama'āina perspective, lānais are a gathering place for family and friends to 'talk story' and enjoy true Hawaiian living." Typical Hawaiian homes will usually have lanāis, and the concept spread to the Southern United States, where many houses have included them in their floor plans.

'Da kine' is frequently used filler term by Hawaiians and locals

A surfer surfs in Hawaii

A popular Pidgin term often heard in Hawaii is "da kine." The expression doesn't have any particular meaning and can be a substitute for anything. "Da kine" is often used as a filler word or a placeholder word when a person is talking as well, and often substitutes for "like," "um," or other affectations. The expression can also be a verb, noun, adjective, or adverb.

Sotheby's International Realty uses the example, "You know da kine?   They came over to the house da other day." However, the phrase can also describe someone's attitude or behavior. It can mean anything from the person in question having an off-putting demeanor to being very likable. In short, tourists will find that "da kine" means quite everything and nothing at all at the same time.

These Hawaii Seniors Say A Japanese Sport Holds The Key To A Healthier And Happier Life

Fans of gateball, a sport invented in Japan after World War II, say the game can help improve the physical and mental strength of Hawaii's quickly aging population.

Fans of gateball, a sport invented in Japan after World War II, say the game can help improve the physical and mental strength of Hawaii’s quickly aging population.

Every Sunday, just after sunrise, a group of seniors gathers at Ala Moana Regional Park. They mow a rectangular patch of grass about the size of a Little League baseball field, place three ankle-height “gates” and a pole on the trimmed land — and just like that are ready to play on a freshly made gateball court.

The small team of Japanese American kupuna are some of the last remaining players in Hawaii of a sport that was once so widespread in the islands that Honolulu was selected as the site of the World Gateball Championship in 1998.

While the sport is still incredibly popular in many parts of Asia, most remaining players in Hawaii have largely lost contact with others outside of their own teams, and the once-active network of players has shriveled.

Veteran educator Art Kimura is one of the newer players at Ala Moana, but he’s on a mission to revive gateball in Hawaii as a way to improve physical and mental health among the state’s rapidly growing population of seniors.

Gateball player Steven Kaneshiro strikes a ball toward the first gate during practice Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, at Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu. Kaneshiro discovered the sport after re-connecting with Art Kimura. Kimura was one of Kaneshiro’s high-school teachers. (Kevin Fujii/Civil Beat/2024)

Kimura’s interest in the Japanese sport was sparked during a trip in March to an area of Okinawa that’s been designated a blue zone — a term researchers use for parts of the world where people live exceptionally long and healthy lives.

“When we asked the elders there, ‘Why do you live so long,” they wouldn’t answer the question, because to them everything they do is a lifestyle,” Kimura said. “But one answer they gave us consistently was ‘gateball.’”

Having played for three months now, he understands gateball’s appeal to the Okinawan elders he spoke to: light physical exercise, socialization as a team sport, and plenty of opportunities to use mental energy.

Today, Kimura wants to restore Hawaii’s lost connection with the Japanese sport by establishing a solid intergenerational base of players.

Kimura, a former high school teacher and public school administrator who garnered national recognition after helping popularize scholastic robotics competitions in Hawaii, is starting by contacting local schools and teachers throughout Oahu to promote gateball as a sport for students.

“I would love to see this start in schools so that children can play with their grandparents,” Kimura said.

Gerontology experts who support Kimura’s efforts say creating a strong intergenerational bond within families through gateball could help address social isolation – a health risk that can lead to serious consequences such as dementia and premature death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A Forgotten Game

Invented in 1947 by Suzuki Kazunobu in Japan, gateball was originally devised for children who lacked adequate play equipment in the postwar era. A shortage of rubber inspired Suzuki Kazunobu, who worked in the lumber industry, to make sports gear with wood and revise the rules of croquet for a younger audience.

The sport was introduced to Hawaii in the early 1980s by first-generation Japanese immigrants. A prominent figure lauded as the father of gateball in Hawaii was Satoshi Migita, who according to his obituary was awarded a Japanese order — a medal honoring people for their achievements and service to Japan — for popularizing the sport in Hawaii and championing the network between Hawaii and Japan.

Gateball is still played by millions of people internationally and is particularly prevalent in East Asian nations like Japan and China, according to the Japan Gateball Union.

This sport is usually enjoyed by seniors and played five-on-five. During the 20- to 30-minute game, each player attempts to pass the ball through the small “gates” using a mallet-shaped stick in sequential order to gain points, similar to croquet. The center goal pole serves as an opportunity to score two points, the game’s grand finale that players refer to as “agari.” A pre-recorded voice times the game through a portable speaker.

The group in Ala Moana is known as Glenn Kitamura’s Team. Kitamura brings the equipment – sticks, balls, field marking tape, and gates – and other players bring small snacks to share in between games.

The oldest player on Kitamura’s team, 91-year-old Norman Miyamoto, vividly remembers the  seventh World Gateball Championship  held at Ala Moana Regional Park in 1998. He played in the championship along with 1,300 players from a dozen different countries.

“We had about five or six local teams from Hawaii,” Miyamoto said.

At the time, Miyamoto said, local players were part of an active network with players from countries in East Asia. Players from different countries traveled to the islands for months during the winter to keep their hand in the sport, he said, just as a golf aficionado might.

Miyamoto believes that the sport was not successfully passed on to another generation of players, in part because it is perceived as a game for seniors.

“When the old players started to retire, quit, or die, we didn’t get new players coming in,” Miyamoto said. “So that’s why there are no new players.”

This was the case for Kimura as well. Although he knew that his grandfather had played gateball, he and other family members from his generation were not introduced to this sport.

Active Aging

On the verge of turning 80, Kimura is actively working to bring gateball back to life in the islands by promoting it to seniors and schools as well.

He believes that gateball would be a great sport for keiki and kupuna alike, because it does not require the athleticism that many other sports demand. It also calls for the kind of strategic thinking that can help build mental fitness.

“You can just set it up on your playground, and the initial cost is not high,” he added.

He also plans to reach out to organizations that offer programs for children and seniors such as the YMCA and senior centers.

Kevin Kawamoto, a gerontological social work educator at the Center on Aging at the University of Hawaii Manoa, said that he supports sports that get seniors out and about and that gateball can be a great sport to encourage this cause.

“Something like that will hit all of those three types of aging — biological, psychological, and social — all at once,” Kawamoto said. “Find what you love, do it with other people that you enjoy being around, and do it on a regular basis. That is active aging.”

Active aging refers to the notion of retired seniors actively engaging in social activities to find a solution for the “what next?” question as they live the last decades of their life.

Cullen Hayashida, gerontology expert and founding director of the Kupuna Education Center at Kapiolani Community College, is at the forefront of active aging initiatives in Hawaii. He stresses the need for the community to find new ways to promote active aging as seniors live longer.

“The goal is to live long and die short; you don’t want to live long and die long,” Hayashida said. “If we are productive right up until the very end, continuously contributing, helping, and connecting with others, that’s a good thing from a gerontological perspective.”

Inside mindy kaling’s lavish hawaiian getaway with $900-a-night rooms, moon cycle treatments and more.

Say aloha to this beautiful vacation spot.

Mindy Kaling escaped to paradise at the ultra-luxurious, oceanfront Grand Wailea resort in Maui, Hawaii.

“Such a treat to visit Hawaii with my family for an end of summer trip,” the “Mindy Project” star, 45, wrote in an Instagram post Thursday of the Waldorf Astoria getaway. “Here is a place I can wear my bright florals and wear tiny shell jewelry, which is compatible with my soul.”

She added, “Love you Maui, catch you on the flippy flip.”

While it’s unclear if Kaling opted for one of the resort’s luxurious suites or villas, we’re told a standard room costs $900 per night and prices go up from there depending on the accommodations.

The most upscale suites can be found in the resort’s Napua tower, which we’re told offers the most privacy and security for guests. The tower has a private lounge and boasts an extensive collection of modern and post-modern art throughout.

Guests staying in the exclusive outpost are treated to a private concierge service and daily programming like chef’s stations, beverage tastings, and live entertainment.

Kaling shared several photos of her time on the island property where she was joined by her three kids and enjoyed relaxing activities like hanging by the property’s pool.

She also posted a photo of herself hitting the updated open-air Kilolani Spa for some R&R.

The spa, which recently underwent a $55 million renovation, offers signature treatments inspired by the moon cycle including a Lomilomi massage, which is described as a generations-old Hawaiian healing art form.

Kaling appeared zen as she posed in a cozy robe on a plush couch after enjoying all the spa amenities, which include hydrotherapy gardens, steam rooms, infrared halotherapy saunas, waterfall showers, and scrub stations, according to the Kilolani spa’s website.

The 50,000-square-foot wellness center is largest spa in the state of Hawaii and encompasses 40 treatment rooms, including couples’ treatment suites, a meditation lounge, a reflection lounge, and a hammam.

We also hear the “Office” alum dined with her family at the renowned on-site restaurant, Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, and rated the meal “10/10” via her Instagram stories.

The establishment serves up fresh, sustainably sourced seafood and features breathtaking views of the lagoon as well as a glass aquarium bar filled with an assortment of colorful swimming fish.

Kaling was seen enjoying a cool beverage while overlooking a beautiful palm tree-speckled view from her balcony in one of the photos she shared on social media.

She also posted a photo of herself holding a soda while soaking up some sunlight by the pool, which is equipped with ample lounge chairs and cabanas. The hotel offers adult-only and kid-friendly swimming pools to cater to each guest’s preferences.

“We’re so glad to hear you and your family enjoyed Maui, @mindykaling!” the resort commented on her post, adding, “It was a pleasure having you at the Grand Wailea—Mahalo!”

Kaling’s vacation came shortly after she spoke at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago last month. She described the experience as “an honor (and a terror!)” on Instagram at the time.
