South Korea offers everything a traveler could want in a destination. It has a long and fascinating history, a wonderful culture, amazing food, friendly people, and an excellent tourism infrastructure (including a new high-speed rail system).

It's also a country of contrasts, with tourist attractions ranging from ancient mountaintop Buddhist temples like Bulguksa to the ultra-modern skyscrapers of Seoul, like the Lotte World Tower.

Of the five grand palaces built by the Joseon Dynasty in the 15 th century around Seoul, Changdeokgung Palace was always the preferred royal residence. It's where the king and royal family lived their daily lives.

The palace isn't just a single building, it's a complex of buildings, and each served a different purpose. Some are accommodations; some are libraries, dining rooms, and meeting rooms, among other uses. Be sure to spend some time in the 78-acre Huwon, or palace garden, located behind the palace. It's filled with pathways, green spaces, pagodas, streams, and lakes.

Did you know you can hit the beach in Korea? Busan is the second largest city in the country, and its coast is lined with some beautiful beaches and resorts. There's a lot of culture and history here, too. Be sure to visit the Beomeosa Temple and the hillside village of Gamecheon . Gamecheon is a European-style village on the cliffs above the sea, like Korea's version of Santorini.

Getting to Busan is easy, it takes a little more than two hours from Seoul on Korea's KTX high-speed bullet train.

Jeonju is a very historic city, once the spiritual capital of the Joseon Dynasty, it's about 90 minutes by train from Seoul. It's home to many ancient temples and shrines along with a hanok village. These are found throughout Korea. They are preserved neighborhoods of ancient and old homes (hanoks), allowing visitors to get a feel for what life was like in ancient Korea.

Some of the homes in the hanok villages are open for tours, and others have been made into museums (and restaurants and lodging, too), but most remain private homes.

Yes, everyone visiting Seoul should go up in the city's iconic observation tower. Its position almost on top of a mountain, plus the height of the tower itself, gets you almost 500 meters above sea level and the city below.

But, leave some time to explore the surrounding mountain area. The tower is near the top of Mount Namsan, and the entire area is Namsan Park, which is run by the city. There are miles of hiking trails to explore, all within a few minutes of downtown Seoul.

The top levels of the N Seoul Tower include indoor and outdoor observation areas and restaurants. The exterior of the tower is covered in LED lighting, which is illuminated each night in seasonal light shows.

There's a cable car that takes you from the city (near Myeongdong) to the tower's base area. You can then hike from here. After climbing the mountain and riding on the cable car, leave time to explore the Namsan Hanok Village . These preserved historic villages, which are located all over Seoul and Korea, are re-creations of ancient Korean neighborhoods. This village includes five restored hanoks or traditional Korean homes.

Hanok villages, which can be found in a few places in Seoul and around Korea, are living museums. They're restored and preserved ancient neighborhoods, some in their original location (like Bukchon) and some re-created with hanoks (traditional Korean homes) moved from elsewhere. They give visitors an opportunity to not only experience what it was like to live in a hanok, but also what it was like to live in Korea 600 years ago.

You can experience the tiny, narrow streets and also explore Korean culture, as many of the hanoks are museums or offer cultural demonstrations. Many are private homes, and some offer accommodations. That's what makes these village areas so special; they are true living history because many of the homes are privately owned and occupied by real local residents.

Bukchon Hanok Village is a popular place to explore, as it's right in central Seoul, in the area between the Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Changdeokgung Palace .

Like the Yosemite of Korea, this majestic natural wonderland (Korea's first national park) has mountains, lakes, waterfalls, streams, and miles of hiking trails that allow you to explore them.

This park is known for its natural diversity, as it has over 1,500 different animal species and over 1,000 different kinds of plants. There are also two Buddhist temples inside the park, one known as the " Temple of a Hundred Pools " due to all the ponds around it fed by mountain streams.

When you get tired of walking, there's a cable car that will take you up Seoraksan Mountain for some incredible views of the mountains and valleys. It takes about four hours by bus or three hours by car to reach the park from Seoul.

DMZ stands for demilitarized zone, and it's the no-man's land border between North and South Korea. Heavily guarded and mined, this strange area can be visited, but only on an official, guided tour. The official area is about four kilometers wide and is formally known as the JSA or Joint Security Area. It's probably the best place to visit in South Korea to learn about this conflict.

The No Shopping Half-Day Korean DMZ Tour from Seoul includes round-trip transportation from Seoul. Official DMZ tours include a visit to the 3rd Tunnel, dug by the North to facilitate an invasion of the South, and to the Dora Observatory, where you can look across no-man's-land into North Korea.

As a world capital, Seoul is filled with a lot of museums. The largest is the National Museum of Korea , and like the Met in New York, it's a place that really can't be explored in a single visit. The vast collection combines art, history, and archeology, presented to show the history of Korean culture and tell the story of the Korean people.

It's also an excellent attraction to see if you only have limited time in Seoul. The collection is beyond vast, as it goes back over a million years. It's fascinating, especially for families and kids as there's such a wide range of objects. Everything from Stone Age tools to modern artwork by Korean artists.

There's an amusement park right in the middle of downtown Seoul. It's a fun place to spend the day and a chance to immerse yourself in real Korean commercial culture. Lotte World includes a hotel, movie theaters (one with the world's largest screen), a folk museum with traditional performances, and other things to do like ice skating.

This theme park is at the base of the Lotte World Tower, the tallest building in South Korea and the fifth tallest building in the world. The tower has multiple observation areas and experiences, its own luxury hotel (the SIGNIEL SEOUL ), and a range of shopping and dining options inside.

A visit is fun for both kids and adults, and aside from the rides and attractions there's a lot of shopping and also artists' workshops and cultural performances to watch. There's the world's largest indoor theme park and an outdoor theme park area called Magic Island .

For a bigger, outdoor theme park experience, Everland is about 45 minutes outside Seoul and is Korea's version of Disneyland.

Also known as the Northern Palace, the large Gyeongbokgung Palace complex has gone through some incredible turmoil over the years. It was first built in 1395 during the Joseon dynasty, which built five grand palaces around Seoul. The palace has been bombed, destroyed, and rebuilt several times, occupied by the Japanese (first in 1592), and only finally restored in 1990.

Be sure to check out Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and Hyangwonjeong Pond , two of the remaining original structures from the Joseon period.

The palace compound can be explored on a guided walking tour . There are also two museums inside the grounds (the National Palace Museum and the National Folk Museum ), both worth a visit.

The ruggedly beautiful Hallyeo Maritime National Park includes miles of raw coastline on over 300 separate islands. Each has hiking trails with spectacular ocean and cliff views. The area also features a cable car, known as the Hallyeosudo Viewing Ropeway . It's the only dual-cable, automatic circulating gondola system in the country.

The ride is almost 2.4 kilometers long and takes nine minutes to reach the summit. You're rewarded with sweeping views of the countryside and coastline, including the Japanese island of Daemado. The park is about an hour by bus or car from downtown Seoul.

One of Korea's true must-see Buddhist temples, Bulguksa Temple is considered by many to be the country's most important. It's officially Historic and Scenic Site Number One as classified by the government. The temple is home to seven of the country's national treasures, sacred pagodas, and statues of the Buddha.

The temple is on the slopes of Mount Toham in Gyeongju, the ancient capital city of Korea. It's a city so historic, it's called a "museum without walls" due to all the historic sites and temples. Gyeongju is about two and a half hours from Seoul via the new KTX high-speed train.

Named for the striking blue-tile roofs of its many pavilions and buildings, the Blue House, much like the White House, is the home of the Korean president. The very secure complex of buildings also houses many Korean executive government offices and official meeting sites. It's an interesting place to visit, as it gives you a behind-the-scenes look at modern Korean government and Korean formal culture.

A lot of what you see on the guided sightseeing tour are meeting rooms and official state reception rooms where foreign dignitaries are welcomed. Hour-long public tours are given, but you need to apply online in advance for a security check.

A very popular resort destination (think the Hawaii of Korea), this volcanic island is best reached via a quick hour-long domestic flight from Seoul. The island boasts beautiful beaches along with a lot of culture and history.

The highest mountain in South Korea (a dormant volcano called Hallasan) is here along with miles of giant lava tubes. The lava tubes, which can be explored, are natural air pockets in the hardened lava, the size of railway tunnels.

Be sure to visit Jungmun Beach to see the diving women. These are women who free dive hundreds of feet to catch different types of seafood. This tradition started centuries ago, when the local men were all out on fishing boats. The island also has hundreds of miles of hiking trails and a lot of hot springs and health spas.

This attraction is a giant gate, formerly the opening in the fortress wall to the Gyeongbokgung Palace located within. It was originally built with the palace in the 15 th century but has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. Most recently in 2010, it was moved back to its original location in front of the palace and Gwanghwamun Square and restored with authentic materials using traditional techniques.

The previous restoration included concrete and other non-traditional construction techniques, but the new gate has been completely constructed with ancient techniques, using only native woods and handmade fittings.

Gwanghwamun Gate is home to the changing of the guards ceremony (performed since 1469), which happens daily (except Tuesdays) at 10am and 2pm. The area in front of the gate, Gwanghwamun Square, is a large public space often used for political and social demonstrations.

This ancient temple complex about 15 minutes from downtown Seoul offers both an authentic Buddhist temple experience (including a temple stay program) and a beautiful national park. The temple, which was first established at the site in 1,000 BCE, has several programs for visitors to learn about and experience Buddhism and the monk lifestyle.

The temple is a must-visit attraction for foodies, as they grow most of their own food on-site. The temple also prepares its own Korean specialties, like pickling kimchi in ancient, giant pottery jars. Jingwansa offers meals to the public (and extended overnight stays) and educational programs that show the sustainability of the ancient temple operation.

You can do a temple stay program, which includes an overnight visit, or just come for a meal (vegetarian) or to explore the buildings and shrines. You can also visit the area just to explore Bukhansan National Park , as the temple is inside it. There are miles of hiking trails and three peaks, which can be climbed. Aside from the mountains and forests and their spectacular scenery, there are also ruins of an ancient fortress along the hiking trails.

Yes, it's a touristy, ex-pat area filled with gift shops and street food, but the Itaewon neighborhood is a great place to just spend an afternoon wandering around. It's especially fun in the early evening, when residents also come out to grab dinner and people-watch. There's an energy here that defines the cosmopolitan city, and it's also a popular strolling spot for locals. You'll see a lot of Korean families, kids, and couples enjoying the shops and restaurants.

For those in search of authentic Korean food, this is not the place to come, but it is the place to come for international foods not widely available in Seoul. Things like Italian food, pizza, burgers, and American-style western barbecue.

As one of the world's great food cultures, no visit to Korea is complete without enjoying some street food. The Gwangjang Market, in Central Seoul , is truly a foodie heaven on earth. The large covered market area is filled with multiple food stalls offering a complete array of Korean specialties. It's definitely one of the best places to visit in Seoul if you're hungry.

The cool thing about this market and most food markets in Seoul is that the majority of these food stalls are like little mini restaurants in that they have a row of stools and a counter, so you can sit and eat. It's also cool that most stands will offer you a free sample.

Stalls typically offer bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes), bibimbap (rice mixed with sauteed beef, vegetables, and gochujang red chili paste), gimbap (Korean sushi), sundae (blood sausage), tteokbokki (stir-fried spicy rice cakes), and various types of noodles.

Boasting almost 400,000 cherry trees, some over 100 years old, Jinhae is the best place in Korea to enjoy cherry trees blossoming with flowers each spring. This small town, located along South Korea's southern coast, hosts the country's most popular annual cherry blossom festival. Over a million visitors a year come to Jinhae just to see the cherry blossoms.

Formally known as Gunhangjae (Naval Port Festival), the Jinhae cherry blossom festival takes place in late March or early April, depending on when the trees are in flower. Head to Yeojwacheon stream and Jinhae's Gyeonghwa train station for some of the best blossom viewing. You can also enjoy the festival's food markets, public art installations, and live performances.

Getting from Seoul to Jinhae is easy via South Korea's high-speed ATX train — the journey takes just under three hours.

There’s no doubt that exploring Seoul is a must when traveling to South Korea. This modern metropolis home to 10 million people is a hodgepodge of culture, history, and culinary delights. No visit to this vibrant capital is complete without a stop at Gyeongbokgung Palace to see impressive examples of Joseon-era architecture and a recreation of the royal changing of the guard ceremony. Follow it up by checking out the city skyline views from the top of N Seoul Tower , then catch a glimpse of Seoul’s storied past amid the exhibits at the National Museum of Korea .

Gyeongju-si

This quiet southeastern city was the country’s former capital, and home of Korea’s illustrious monarchs during the Silla Kingdom, which lasted for nearly 1,000 years. Only two hours from Seoul by high-speed train, Gyeongju can easily be a day trip if you’re short on time. Highlights include Daereungwon Tomb Complex (popularly known as Tumuli Park), where otherworldly burial mounds enclose ancient treasures; elegant Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond , the pleasure palace of Silla kings; and the UNESCO sites and Korea National Treasures of Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto —a granite temple containing a seated Buddha statue.

Home of the Busan International Film Festival which takes place every October, this southern port city is filled with a pulsating energy all its own. Only three hours from the capital via the KTX high-speed train, Busan is acclaimed for its Waikiki-esque Haeundae Beach . But there are plenty of other sights to see and things to do in South Korea’s second largest city . Start your tour with the multicolored 14th-century Haedong Yonggungsa Temple (one of the few in the country built next to the sea), then watch from Gwangalli Beach as twinkling lights spread across the iconic Diamond Bridge at night.

Jeju is commonly referred to as the “Hawaii of South Korea,” and for good reason—tranquil beaches, volcanic landscapes, and a plethora of palm trees give the island a decidedly tropical vibe. Watch the sunrise over Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak , a 5,000-year-old volcanic cone jutting into the sea, then head for the white sands and turquoise waters found at Hyeopjae Beach on the island’s west coast. Continue with a hike up Hallasan , South Korea’s highest peak, which also happens to be an active volcano. Jeju can easily be reached via domestic flights from Seoul or Busan.

The easygoing city of Sokcho in South Korea’s northeast corner is home to a stretch of golden coastline, but it's perhaps mostly known as the location of Seoraksan National Park . Celebrated as the country’s most beautiful national park, Seoraksan is a hiking enthusiast’s dream come true. Miles of trails wind through jagged peaks and vast forests, past streams, waterfalls, and dignified Buddhist temples. For a visual treat, plan your visit during the months of October or November when the fiery fall leaves create a blanket of color.

Note: While autumn makes for the best leaf-peeping opportunity, it’s also one of the park’s busiest times of year.

Jirisan National Park

Meaning “the mountain of the odd and wise people,” Jirisan is considered one of Korea’s three most legendary mountains and is a place where spiritual seekers have flocked for thousands of years. In 1967, the mountain and surrounding area became South Korea’s first national park (it’s also the largest terrestrial national park). Jirisan is known for its incredibly diverse flora and fauna, including the leopard cat and the Asiatic black bear, both considered endangered species and protected in Korea. Buses and trains reach Namwon Station from Seoul in approximately three hours, from which it’s another hour’s bus or taxi ride to Jirisan National Park.

Only 30 minutes south of Seoul, Suwon is an often overlooked but culturally important site in the history of South Korea. Suwon is home to Hwaseong Fortress , an imposing 18th-century stone and brick structure built both as a tomb and a political stronghold, with walls stretching for nearly 4 miles. For those looking for more in-the-moment thrills, just outside Suwon lies Everland , Korea’s largest theme park and the 16th most visited amusement park in the world. Suwon is also home to Mr. Toilet House ; the commode-shaped home of the city’s former mayor, which is now a quirky museum dedicated to public sanitation.

Dadohaehaesang National Park

As South Korea’s largest national park, Dadohaehaesang spans a collection of rocky islands along the country’s southern coast. Though a challenge to get to (a three-hour train ride from Seoul followed by numerous taxis and ferries), a visit to Dadohaehaesang National Park is well worth the effort for those who enjoy unspoiled natural beauty. A swath of evergreen forests plunge to craggy shorelines, and the park houses a broad assortment of endangered plant and animal species. The area is also notable for its maritime past as the site of multiple sea battles between Korea and invading Japanese armies.

Set in the central Gyeongbuk province, the laid-back city of Andong framed by the Nakdong River is most famous for the UNESCO-listed Hahoe Folk Village . Dating to the 15th century, this quaint assemblage of thatched or tile-roofed houses evokes bygone images of the country’s Joseon Dynasty, and makes for one of South Korea’s most charming tourist attractions. Andong has long been considered the capital of Korean traditional culture, and other draws include renowned Andong soju (distilled rice whiskey), and the annual Andong Mask Dance Festival .

Although it’s not one of South Korea’s largest or most famous temples, Tapsa Temple may well be the most interesting both visually and historically. Set at the base of a towering cliff, the temple grounds house over 80 stone pagodas built by a retired scholar-turned-hermit in the 19th century. Although no adhesive materials were used to build the pagodas, some of which stand 18 feet high, they have mysteriously withstood typhoons and strong winds over the centuries. Visit during the Maisan Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring, when the trees surrounding the temple come alive with cherry blossoms. Buses from Seoul reach Jinan Intercity Bus Stop in just under four hours, and from there it’s easy to take a taxi or local bus to the temple.

South Korea has an incredible range of experiences for a country of its size – an eclectic nightlife in the capital that never sleeps , trekking through the mountains followed by forest bathing, and a delicious and varied cuisine that will keep you coming back for more.

No matter what type of vacation you seek, this petite peninsula has something to delight everyone. Here are our favorite, can't-miss experiences in South Korea .

1. Watch the cherry trees blossom in Jinhae

In late March and early April , South Korea turns pink and white as millions of cherry trees billow with delicate blooms. While the blossoms can be seen all across the country, the most famous viewing spot is the small southern coastal district of Jinhae. With as many as 360,000 trees – some more than 100 years old – Jinhae's cherry blossom festival is the country's most extensive. 

Throughout the 10-day festival, visitors can admire the flowers at the old train station Gyeonghwa-yeok, marvel at them lit up at night at Yeojwacheon Stream and Romance Bridge, enjoy the opening ceremony and other performances, and then shop the street vendors at Jungwon Rotary. It's pure magic.

Planning tip:  The festival is  very  popular, and visitors flock from across the world to view the cherry blossoms. Be prepared for large crowds, but don't worry – people are generally very courteous, and you'll get your turn to take some incredible pictures at key sights.

2. Stroll along the Cheong-gye-cheon in Seoul

On a warm, bright day in Seoul , there's nothing better than meandering along  Cheong-gye-cheon , the almost 11km (6.8-mile) stream that flows east to west through the city's downtown. Along this Joseon-era waterway, which was once covered with a highway and later restored as part of an urban renewal project, walkers can stop at the stream's museum, enjoy art installations, watch a street performance or simply sit on the steps with a snack. Cheong-gye-cheon passes under 22 bridges before connecting with the Jungnangcheon tributary and eventually the Han River. Slow down and savor each step.

3. Do the cha cha

No, not dancing: drinking. In South Korea, cha refers to each successive round of revelry in a single night, and it's one of the most essential things to be familiar with when exploring Korean nightlife. Il cha , round one, is typically barbecue when diners enjoy  somaek (soju plus maekju , or beer) with their samgyeopsal (pork belly) and other grilled meats. From there, you might head to a pub for round two, another bar for round three then a club for round four.

For those who have managed to make it through all of that, the last round of the night is usually noraebang (private karaoke room), where you can order more alcohol and snacks while selecting your favorite tunes to sing – put your Korean skills to the test with a K-pop hit or two. If you can manage to follow the words, that is.

4. Visit a jjimjilbang , a traditional Korean sauna

A central aspect of Korean culture is visiting the local jjimjilbang . Meaning "heated rooms" these traditional saunas are where Koreans unwind and engage in a host of health and beauty rituals. In some cases they are combined with hot springs where you can relax in thermally heated, mineral-rich waters.

Saunas are typically heated to between 50°C (122°F) and 90°C (194°F) and are really quite pleasant. As you lie on hemp mats (or sometimes salt or jade crystals), the heated stone gently warms your body. After about 15 to 20 minutes, you'll start to sweat. It's easy to fall asleep, but don't – or you'll risk dehydration. Similar to other spa cultures around the world, jjimjilbang adhere to specific etiquette , including the essential practice of thoroughly washing before entering the baths.

Relax after your sauna, in the jimjilbang common areas where you can play computer games, watch TV or simply snooze (in fact, at many jjimjilbang its possible to stay overnight). Cap off a good steam by drinking sikhye – a fermented sweet rice drink usually sold at jjimjilbang – and eating hard boiled eggs that have been steamed in the saunas.

5. Cheer for your favorite city or company at a baseball game

South Korea's most popular professional sport is baseball, and whether you're a fan or not, you're in for a good time at a Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) game. Owned by some of the country's biggest conglomerates, the KBO league's ten teams include many brand names you might recognize, like Gwangju's Kia Tigers , Daegu's Samsung Lions and Seoul's LG Twins, who won the 2023 league season. 

Before cheering on your favorite city or company, learn the special fight songs and chants for each team, as well as the roster of its best-known players. But the best part of KBO games might be the concession-stand setup: fried chicken, pizza and other snacks are actually affordable, convenience stores like 7-Eleven are on site and sell beer at the standard price, and you're even allowed to bring in your own food and alcohol. Another reason to take yourself out to a ballgame.

Planning tip:  The baseball season runs between April and October, and tickets for big games get snapped up quickly. To increase your changes at grabbing a ticket, head to the box office early. Weekday games are less likely to sell out.

6. Shop until you drop at traditional markets

South Korea's sijang (traditional markets) are a cacophony of vendors hawking their wares, shoppers shouting their orders, fish splashing around water-filled basins and kitchenware clanging together. Just when you think you've gotten your bearings, an old man on a bike rings his bell to let you know he needs to get through. By venturing into the country's busiest markets, you'll immerse yourself in the chaos of everyday Korean life as you shop for clothing, accessories, housewares, produce, food and more.

In Seoul, Namdaemun Market and Gwangjang Market are among the city's oldest and most popular, both perfect to find something to eat while you shop. In Busan , head to Gukje Market for its hundreds of stalls selling a staggering selection of items, from leather goods to Korean drums. For more traditional markets, try Dongmun Market in Jeju-do and Jungang Market in Daejeon.

7. Check out the cafe scene

An Instagrammer's dream, South Korea's cafe scene has a spot for every taste. Pet cafes feature live dogs, cats, raccoons, meerkats, kangaroos and any number of other creatures to keep you company while you sip your coffee. Other themes range from books and movies to flowers, 2D illusions, travel, vinyl and more: you name it, you'll find it here. Just be prepared for menu prices that might make your eyes water: it's not uncommon for a plain Americano to set you back a whopping ₩7000.

8. Go hiking with makgeolli and jeon

With 70% of the country covered in mountainous terrain, hiking is a beloved South Korean pastime and a culture unto itself. While on the trail, you're sure to see trekkers racing up the slopes decked out in the latest and greatest mountaineering gear. At the summit, you'll notice them sharing packed picnics of gimbap (seaweed-wrapped rice rolls) and other snacks.

After a hard day's hike, you'll spot them unwinding with a favorite mountain pairing: jeon (savory fried pancakes) and makgeolli (fermented rice wine). Join in the custom at one of South Korea's 22 national parks or, if you're in Jeju-do, along the island-encircling Olle Trail.

9. Gaze at the bamboo trees in Damyang

Bamboo patches can be found scattered all over the southern part of the country, and the largest such forest is located in Damyang in North Jeolla province. A 16-hectare (39.5 acres) stretch of verdant green, Juknokwon is known for its many scenic trails and also has an art gallery, culture village and nearby bamboo museum. While you're in the area, you can even try a scoop of bamboo ice cream.

10. Get your caffeine fix in Boseong

The green tea capital of South Korea, Boseong County in North Jeolla province is a stunning emerald expanse of terraced fields that produces more than 40% of the country's nokcha supply. Visit the 500-hectare (1235 acres) Daehan Dawon , the region's oldest and largest plantation, to meander the tea fields and surrounding cedar and juniper forests. There's also a green tea shop for buying souvenirs plus a green tea restaurant for tasting nokcha -enhanced variations of classic Korean dishes like bibimbap and naengmyeon (cold noodles). Next door is the Tea Museum of Korea , a can't-miss attraction for any tea connoisseur.

11. Dig into each city's signature dish

From Andong's jjimdak (soy-braised chicken) to Suwon's  galbi (beef short ribs), a signature dish characterizes many South Korean cities , and many of them have a single alley filled with vendors preparing their own variations on the local recipe. In Uijeongbu, go to Budaejjigae Street near Jungang Station to sample a boiling pot of budae jjigae,  a blend of Spam, canned beans, kimchi and instant noodles that was invented in the aftermath of the Korean War using leftover rations from American military bases – the name translates as "army base stew."

In Chuncheon , check out Dakgalbi Street to try the city's quintessential spicy stir-fried chicken. Carnivores in Jeju-do  can't miss its special black pork, said to be more tender than the pink variety. The iconic bibimbap in  Jeonju  is unique because the rice is cooked in beef broth, then often served tartare-style topped with raw beef and egg yolk. When you visit South Korea, you'd best arrive hungry.

Wherever you go, you’ll feel welcomed by friendly locals, pleasant streets and beckoning street food. There is so much to see and do here, and so many way to appreciate all the country has to offer, whatever your personal tastes. You can saunter through a village of quaint traditional houses, embrace Korea’s flourishing surf culture, or check out the unique DMZ Peace Train Music Festival. There are shops open 24 hours a day, as well as breathtaking natural beauty if that’s more your vibe. Here is your ultimate guide to South Korea.

Best things to do in South Korea

1.  bukhansan mountain walk.

What is it? This walk offers a rare chance to see the mountain range in the centre of a capital city. Bukhansan is in the southern part of Seoul, while Dobongsan covers the north; and from anywhere in the city you can reach the mountains within 40 minutes at most. 

Why go?  Bukhansan mountain trails are probably the best choice if you’d like to start from anywhere in the city centre. Even after the first half an hour of trekking, you can get a sense of what makes the Korean mountains so appealing for both locals and tourists. You can choose various walking routes from 2-3 hour to 4-5 hour courses, depending on how fit you’d like to be.

2.  Jongmyo Shrine

Where is it?  Seoul 

What is it?  Jongmyo is a uniquely shaped building, originally completed in the 14th century, situated in the middle of Jongro. It houses a royal Confucian shrine dedicated to the forefathers of Joseon Dynasty, and was restored in the 17th century after its destruction from a Japanese invasion.

Why go?  One of the most beloved of Korean architects, Seung Hyo-sang, considers Jongmyo to be an emblem of Korean architecture for its philosophical and spiritual foundation: “It expresses our view of death, that the souls of the dead do not disappear but interact continually on the land of the living.” Perhaps that's the reason why the austere 117 meter-long rectangular building has the power to plunge us living souls into a long and reverent silence.

3.  Jeju Oreum on Jeju Island

Where is it? Jeju Island

What is it?  “Oreum” is what Jeju people call parasite cones; the name refers to a small defunct volcano within a main volcanic crater. These oreum—the cone-shaped accumulation of volcanic material—are verdant, grassy hills at heights which vary between 50 and 200 meters;

Why go?  This is the best way to understand Jeju. Think of beautiful walking trails and footpaths, where you can enjoy easy-to-follow routes, short strolls and major treks.

4.  Jeju Olle

What is it?  “Olle” is a local Jeju word for alleys or long and narrow passages. There are 21 different olles on Jeju Island, and each is about 15 kilometres long. Imagine walking in tranquil open green fields, then passing through village alleys dotted along the coastline.

Why go? If you want to capture the essence of Jeju in one place, this would be it. Experiencing beauty and serenity on foot will give you a feeling of renewal.

5.  Yangyang Surfyy Beach

Where is it? Yangyang, Gangwon Province

What is it? Surfing has never been a tradition or popular sport in Korea, but as the number of surfers here rises rapidly, Yangyang Surfyy beach is quickly gaining mainstream appeal—especially so because it’s the nearest surfing spot from Seoul. 

Why go? Here you can sample not only surfing culture, but youth culture as well. Not really into surfing? There are still many reasons to go to Yangyang: The myriad bars and eateries are as lively by day as they are at night, and you’ll be met by a friendly and welcoming surfing community.

6.  Gwangjang Market

Where is it? Seoul

What is it? 110 years ago, Gwangjang Market was the largest traditional Korean clothing and silk goods market. These days, it has developed another specialty - street food. It is always packed with tourists, locals and vendors. 

Why go? It’s easy to get to from the centre of the city, and countless rows of food stalls will tempt your taste buds. Be sure to look for Mayak Gimbab, a dish with rice rolled with seaweed. “Mayak” literally means drug addict, and you may have withdrawal symptoms if you stop eating it!

7.  Daereungwon Gyeongju

Where is it? Gyeongju

What is it?  Gyeongju was the capital of the Kingdom of Silla (57BC-935BC), which ruled two thirds of Korea at its peak. Gyeongju is now often referred to as "the museum without walls”; this particular site is a series of ancient tombs which hordes many archeological treasures.

Why go?  Looking at Gyeongju city from a distance, the anachronous skyline looks very distinctive. It’s a surreal miscellany of hills made of stunning ancient tombs, modern building blocks and residences, which will make you wonder which century you are in.   

8.  Jeonju Hanok Village

Where is it? Jeonju

What is it?  There is nothing more Korean and more authentic than a Hanok—a type of house built using traditional building techniques stretching back many thousands of years. There is a much smaller version of Hanok village in Seoul, but Jeonju has the largest collection of hanok in the country.

Why go?  Jeonju attracts local tourists for its food and many Koreans relish the prospect of staying in a hanok for a night or two. You can opt for a full course Korean meal where you will be pleasantly bombarded by plenty of dishes and the odd bottle or two of local rice wine, 'makgeolli,’ which is the perfect complement to the local food.

9.  Jarasum International Jazz Festival

Where is it? Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do

What is it? From world class jazz musicians to undiscovered local bands, there are 10 stages accommodating 100 different gigs at this annual international jazz festival, at which almost all the concerts have free entry.

Why go?  This festival is so successful that it attracts more than 100,000 jazz aficionados every year. Even if you weren’t such a big jazz fan, the eco-friendly theme running through the festival and the picturesque scenery are good enough reasons to give it a go.

10.  Donaeko Jeju

What is it?  Donaeko is a mystical waterfall valley. It used to be the local’s favourite summer spot to escape the heat of the day. The name suggests it was a place where wild boars would go to cool down and drink water.

Why go?  The water coming down from Hanrasan mountain is always ice cold. The plunge pool, which the waterfall flows into, is emerald green and its breathtaking natural surroundings are often compared with the majesty of Kuang Si Falls in Laos.

11.  Jagalchi Market

Where is it? Busan 

What is it? In Korea’s the biggest fish market, you have a fine selection of sashimi to choose from. Close to the market you can also enjoy the golden sandy beaches of Haeundae and Gwanganri, the former of which was featured in a Korean disaster movie a few years ago.

Why go?  This is a truly authentic experience of how Koreans take their raw fish and delicatessenseafood. Choose anything you fancy from the fish tank, and you’ll be served a freshly prepared dish, made to order.

12.  Mingles

What is it? Mingles is easily one of the most interesting restaurants in Seoul when it comes to modern Korean dining. It uses seasonal ingredients, yet keeps to traditional Joseon royal palace recipes. Great for both younger and older generations.

Why go? The young chef Mingoo Kang was trained under Martin Berasategui in San Sebastian, Spain. He earned one Michelin star in 2018, which ranked his restaurant eleventh out of Asia's 50 best restaurants in the same year. Mingles has proven its strength in innovation and its influence in the local food scene, and is one of the Seoul’s hottest places to visit.

13.  Eat Jeju black pork

Where is it? Jeju Island 

What is it?  This particular Jeju pork comes from a special breed of pig which are pitch black and shiny. The meat is so tender that it easily melts in the mouth. Thick slices of pork are barbequed on a coal fire grill and served with a salted anchovy dip in Jeju style.

Why go?  Nothing can beat a Korean BBQ and Jeju pork makes the experience extra special. It is an all-time favourite for Koreans. Don’t miss out on the juicy pork belly with rind crackling.

14.  Suyeonsanbang

Where is it? Seoul 

What is it?  Once a home of the novelist Lee Tae-jun, this is now a tranquil tearoom. The name “Suyeonsanbang” translates as “a cosy home in the middle of the woods where intellectuals meet”. The meticulously maintained hanok must have been Lee’s pride and joy, as it appears in several of his stories. 

Why go? Hidden on the slope of a hill and tucked behind colourful flowers and bushes, it’s not hard to imagine how a writer could draw inspiration from this charming hideaway. They now have an impressive tea collection like medicinal herb ssanghwa-cha as well as authentic Korean desserts.

15.  Magpie

What is it? Magpie is one of Seoul’s most popular craft beer houses, if not the best. It was started by five friends who shared the same home-brewing hobby. It has come to greater prominence as the demand for craft beer in Korea has risen.

Why go? Magpie is a highly acclaimed pioneer of the craft beer industry. They constantly experiment with new offerings. You might want to find a table in the basement to check out some of their cuisine. Is it too dull to eat pizza? We don’t think so. It’s one of the best in town.

16.  Boksoondoga F1963

Where is it? Busan

What is it?  This upmarket restaurant (which started out as a small brewery in Ulsan) is renowned for its own unique makgeolli recipe. The venue, previously a wire factory from 1963, is perfectly invigorated with Boksoondoga’s own identity and character.

Why go? This is a great place to go for modern Korean food and a makgeolli tasting experience in Busan. Incorporating a variety of ingredients such as sweet potatoes and amberjack fish, the menu showcases a new wave of Korean cuisine combined with inspirations from the restaurant’s own homemade makgeolli, artisanal condiments and jam.  

17.  National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul

What is it? This is Seoul’s equivalent to MOMA in New York. The museum has eight exhibition halls as well as a video library, a movie cinema and a food court. Wedged in between old and contemporary architecture is a huge open space which is used for outdoor exhibitions.

Why go?  If you have only one day to spare in Seoul, this should be the first place you see. Not only can you learn about the Korean contemporary art scene, you can also see how locals hang out with their friends and family.

18.  Aquafield

Where is it? Hanam

What is it? A Korean style of sauna which must be experienced, especially if it’s your first visit. Using firewood to heat a dome of stone, you will find yourself sweating as the room temperature reaches over 100 degrees Celsius. This particular jimjilbang also has a water park and is known for its spectacular facilities.

Why go? Aquafiled is further away from the city of Seoul, but the journey is worth it. From the outdoor swimming pool to the entertainment rooms, you can enjoy so many ways of relaxing.

Occupying the southern half of the Korean Peninsula is the country of South Korea. Completely distinct and independent from neighboring North Korea, South Korea is a thoroughly modern, engaging and thrilling destination for travelers. Major cities like Seoul offers the buzz of an urban metropolis along with fantastic nightlife and a chance to discover the latest technological marvel.

However, South Korea is also home to scenic national parks and plenty of places where you can slow down and enjoy the atmosphere. From islands off the coast to the fearsome border zone in the middle of the Korean Peninsula, there are countless things to do, see and explore on your next trip to South Korea.

10. Suwon [SEE MAP]

The city of Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi Province, and it is just 30 km (20 miles) outside of Seoul. It is easily accessible from Seoul by car or train, but it often skipped over by travelers.

If you visit, you’ll be able to see the World Cup Stadium, affectionately called Big Bird, that hosted the quarter finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. If you’re not a soccer fan, head instead to the historic 18th century Hwaseong Fortress, where you can tour the architecture and even try your hand at archery on the premises.

9. Chuncheon [SEE MAP]

Surrounded by scenic lakes and towering mountains in Chuncheon, the capital city of Gangwon Province. Chuncheon is the location of a popular Korean soap opera called Winter Sonata, and a lot of visitors in the city come to see some of the most common filming locations.

Other travelers come for the food, because Chuncheon is known as a foodie’s paradise. After touring major attractions like the Soyang Dam, Statue Park or Cheongpyeong-sa Temple, head to Dakgalbi Street. This street features the dish dakgalbi, a grilled chicken meal with spicy vegetables and rice. Dozens of restaurants on the street offer the same iconic dish, each offering slight variations on the recipe.

8. Busan [SEE MAP]

The second largest city in the entire country is Busan. It’s also a major port, and it is known for boasting beautiful beaches as well as hot springs and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Busan’s Gamcheon Cultural Village, known as the Santorini of Korea, is a stunningly colorful hillside community overlooking the water.

While in Busan, you’ll also have the chance to visit several temples, the most popular of which is Beomeosa Temple. While the city boasts all the shopping and museums you might expect from an urban area of its size, some of the most popular attractions include Haeundae Beach, Taejongdae Park and the beautiful Nakdong River Estuary Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

7. Jeonju [SEE MAP]

At the peak of the Joseon Dynasty, Jeonju was its spiritual capital. Today, Jeonju is filled with temples and museums and is one of the best places to visit in South Korea. If you want to embrace the local culture and get to know its history, make your way to the Jeonju Hanok Village.

There, you can see traditional homes from the early 20th century, make the traditional Hanji paper or sip the locally made soju. Another popular attraction in the city is the impressive Jeonju National Museum, home to a staggering collection of artifacts. While in Jeonju, try the famed Korean dish Bibimbap, which originally comes from this region.

6. Seoraksan National Park [SEE MAP]

If you want to go hiking, see the best known mountain range in South Korea or just get some epic photos, then make sure you visit the Seoraksan National Park. Within the park you’ll find pine forests, jagged and rocky mountain peaks, crystal clear streams and stunning lakes.

Seoraksan National Park is also home to over 2,000 animal species. Start your visit at the National Park Visitor Centre, where you can pick up free maps in English and Korean. Then, enjoy the miles and miles of signposted hiking trails that crisscross the entire park.

5. Andong [SEE MAP]

At more than 2,000 years, Andong is sometimes referred to as the Capital City of Korean Spiritual Culture. Perhaps the main attraction in the city is the Andong Hahoe Folk Village, where local cultural heritage has been preserved and is shared with visitors.

However, it is foodies that will most enjoy a visit to Andong. The city boasts all kinds of local specialties, starting with a famed chicken and noodle dish called jjimdak. Andong is also home to a special type of alcohol called soju, so have a sip before you depart the city.

4. Jeju Island [SEE MAP]

Off the southern coast of South Korea is Jeju Island, the country’s only Special Autonomous Province. Nicknamed Island of the Gods, Jeju is a subtropical destination known as one of the top honeymoon and vacation spots in South Korea. In addition to beautiful beaches, lava tubes and lush green scenery, Jeju boasts a long list of tourist attractions and amusement parks.

You can get to know the local culture at the Seongeup Folklore Village, or you could visit Glass Castle, a theme park that revolves around glass sculptures. Perhaps the oddest and most controversial attraction in Jeju is Loveland, a theme park featuring romantic and adults-only attractions.

3. DMZ [SEE MAP]

The DMZ, or demilitarized zone, is the boundary area between North and South Korea. It is considered a cease-fire zone. While travelers can visit the DMZ, not all areas of the zone are safe. Only a small portion of the DMZ, known as the JSA or Joint Security Area, is open to the public.

In the JSA, you can physically stand in North Korea, although you will be within a building that also houses South Korean soldiers. You can also visit a North Korean gift shop that sells stamps, wine and currency from North Korea. Be aware that the only way to visit the DMZ is on an authorized and guided tour.

2. Gyeongju [SEE MAP]

Gyeongju is the ancient capital of what was once the Silla Kingdom. This makes the city more than 2,000 years old. Gyeongju is an incredible destination that boasts a number of temples and cultural festivals. Start your trip at the Bulguksa Temple, a true masterpiece of Buddhist religion and art that dates back to the 8th century. Then, hike up from the temple to the Seokguram Grotto for even more Buddhist culture and artifacts.

Don’t miss the Covered Market, a collection of vendors selling everything from Silla souvenirs to freshly made Korean delicacies.

Seoul is by far the largest city in South Korea and a major destination in East Asia. If you’re spending any time in the country, there’s a good chance you’ll be visiting Seoul at some point. I am Korean, but live in US and I think you missed Kwangju, where Korean Democracy started and Moodeng Mount is beautiful and lots of performance of Korean traditional music. Whenever I visit Korea, I love to visit that city where you can feel the spirit of Korean.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) have announced the 100 Must-Visit Tourism Spots of Korea for 2021-2022. Out of these 100 must visit tourist spots in Korea, 51 of the travel destinations are natural attractions and 49 are cultural attractions.

The list of 100 must visit spots was first launched in 2013 and since then, 19 out of the total have been on the list for five consecutive times. All these destinations were selected from a pool of 198 destinations in South Korea.

According to Choi Bo-guen, head of the Culture Ministry’s Tourism Policy Bureau, “It is sad that we cannot enjoy traveling as we please as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. We hope Koreans and tourists can travel freely in the near future, visiting the 100 Must-Visit Tourism Spots of Korea”.

The most notable thing about Andong Hahoe Folk Village is that it dates back to the 9th century and both commoners and noblemen lived there.

It unleashes its best view during the winter with foggy, snowy mountains. Both locals and foreigners come to this park to enjoy the rugged wilderness. It is one of the most visited parks in South Korea.

Suwon is famous for its fortress, Palace and many gates. The eye-catching stone-made wall of the fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The structural beauty has made the city different from others. Now, it is renowned as both a historical town and a multicultural city.

In Suwon, one of my favourite places to visit in Korea, you will get to know about the dramatic and golden succession of Korean history and alongside enjoy the modern architectural sites.

● Hwaseong Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage site which was built a long ago to protect the city with 4 main gates)

● Suwon Hwaseong Museum (Presents the whole history and culture of Hwaseong Fortress)

● Paldalmun Gate (One of the most important gates of the fortress surrounded by modern buildings)

● Haenggung Palace (Venue of cultural and traditional festivals with a lot of attractions)

● Hwahongmun Gate (Another gate of Hwaseong Fortress presents traditional history)

● Toilet Museum (A totally different concept-based museum to accelerate the awareness of sanitation)

● Wolhwawon Garden (A traditional Chinese Garden which is a quiet place with lovely nature and charming architecture)

● Janganmun Gate (Northern Gate of Hwaseong Fortress, which is also the main gate of the fortress)

8. Boseong Green Tea Field

This is one of the major green tea producing fields in South Korea, which offers a vital scenic beauty. A lot of people already know about it as it has been used as a filming site for a lot of Korean dramas. There are places to hike and enjoy the spot from the top, which can heal your soul. Alongside, Korean green tea is much different from normal ones because it can reduce bitterness and increase the taste.

Out of all the must-visit places in Korea, Boseong Green Tea Field is a notable one. In fact, it should be the first one on your priority list if you are a nature lover. The tea of this place is also very healthy and the beautiful green tea fields are a blessing to the eyes.

● Green Tea Farm Observatory ( situatedat the top to explore the whole view)

● Waterfall Area (A little waterfall to boost up your energy)

● Botjae Dawon Tea Plantation (another tea Field which is a 5-minute walk from the Boseong Green Tea Field)

● Green tea cafe (A coffee shop sitting on the hill of the field with a full-length view of the total area)

● Korea Tea Museum (holding the history of Korean tea)

● Yulpo Beach (a great place to enjoy the sunset and beach view)

9. Haeinsa Temple

It’s considered the most authentic and major temple in South Korea. It has the oldest Buddhist canon reserved here for a long time. It’s popular both for religious and historical value. A lot of people who are not interested in any of these only go there to experience the calmness and purity of nature.

The temple houses the  Tripitaka Koreana   which is   the most complete collection of Buddhist texts. The four buildings of the temple complex have a unique structure. It is a famous destination for both local and international Buddhists and scholars.

10. Pyeongchang County

Pyeongchang County is a place occupied by mountains. It’s an excellent place for hiking, skiing and snowboarding. You will also find temples in the midst of hills. The best time to visit here is autumn or winter to perform all the exciting activities. It is a city of nature and sports. A huge number of nature lovers and adventurers come here every year.

● Odaesan National Park (70% of this place is covered by mountains. Great place for trekking while observing a bunch of flora and fauna)

● Woljeongsa Temple (One of the best temples in Pyeongchang County surrounded by streams and hills. You will be able to walk through the woods while observing it)

● Daegwallyeong Sheep Ranch (Can be a quick stop in the time of hiking to interact with cute little sheep)

● Bongpyeong Village (If your trip is planned for autumn, make sure to go there to explore buckwheat flowers fields)

● Yongpyong Ski Resort (your best chance to do some skiing and snowboarding)

11. The Korean Demilitarized Zone

This is the place holding the history of the division of North and South Korea. This 160 the mile-long area has a bunch of spots that are the witness of such modern history. It’s a living example of what can be done when two neighbouring countries go through conflict.

There are a specific set of rules that every tourist must follow when visiting this place. It’s different from other tourist spots so you should always follow your tour guide. You might even be required to follow a strict dress code and might not be allowed to take pictures without permission.

● 3rd Tunnel of Aggregation (secret tunnel made by North Korea and discovered by South Korea after 8 years)

● Freedom Bridge – Imjingak( A spot made to remember the divided family. It was also used for the exchange of people once)

● Dora Observatory (can catch a sight of North Korea without going there)

● Dorasan Station (Gateway to North Korea which is left unused nowadays)

12. Dadohaehaesang National Park

Now it’s time to spend some memorable time in the midst of the ocean. Dadohaehaesang National Park is the largest national park in South Korea which is a bundle of 1700 small and large islands and rocks located in the East and West Sea.

This is the place where you can only choose to relax sitting by the ocean or make a hardcore adventure list with trekking in the mountains and boating in the ocean. The majority of islands in Dadohaehaesang National Park are uninhabited. It is better to go to the inhabited and touristy islands to avoid all kinds of harm.

● Heuksando and Hongdo Districts (famous for their striking view of islands and sea)

● Baekdo District ( containingBaekdo Island where a unique form of rock pinnacles is found. Spreading beauty of towns and nature)

● Palyeongsan District (only spot without beach area but enriched with high mountains)

● Bigeum District (most beautiful beaches like Uido and Shimmok Beach)

● Geumodo District (having dark forest and beautiful view of sunrise)

● Naro Island District (the most different one because it has Naro Space Center)

13. Juknokwon

What about just a peaceful walk through a bamboo forest that has 8 different paths with 8 other concepts? If you’re interested in a short tour of 3 to 4 hours wandering into a forest full of tall bamboo trees, then this place is the ideal form for you. The most interesting part is Juknokwon is almost an evergreen forest which means in the cold winter, under snowy cover, this forest keeps its greenery version fresh and charming.

This is one of the most interesting places to visit in Korea. Here you will be able to breathe in fresh oxygen away from the pollution of bustling cities. The cooling breeze throughout the lush forest is really relaxing to the mind and body.

● 8 Different Trails ( This includes Lover’s Lane, Philosopher’s Way,Old Friend’s Trail, Old Memories Byway, Scholar’s Road, Good Luck Road, Seonginsan Trail and Meditation Road )

● Bonghwangnu Observatory ( An observation tower to get the whole view)

14. Incheon

Whether you are looking for yummy Chinese food or concession-era architecture, Incheon is the place for you. Out of all the top places to visit in Korea, Incheon is a different one. In Incheon, you will find parks, markets, temples, quaint islands and a fairytale village where fairytales seem to come alive.

This city that lies on the borders of Seoul and Gyeonggi has played a tremendous role during the Korean War. So, it is a great place to visit to learn about the history of Korea. Whether you are interested in history or architecture, islands or parks, hilltops or villages, here you will find every tourist attraction that interests you.

This city is a perfect blend of natural beauty, modern technology and culture.

Some Special Manner You Should Always Maintain when in South Korea

The South Korean culture is one of a kind. You must maintain particular mannerisms when visiting this beautiful country, mainly if your travels occur in urban centres such as Seoul or Busan. The following rules will help you to cope up with South Koreans. They’re really dedicated to following those rules, so to enjoy your trip to your fullest, you should try to maintain them.

1. Whenever you’re receiving or giving anything to a person, always hold that thing with two hands. They take it as a matter of modesty.

2. After eating, always place your chopsticks parallel to your cup or plate. Never leave them upside down. It’s standard etiquette in South Korea.

3. If you’re taking public transportation like the train, try to keep your voice low. It’s very rare to find anyone talking loudly on a train in South Korea.

4. Never get into a fight. South Korea is a peace-loving country, and the people there are very kind to each other.

5. Try to avoid the use of red ink in any type of writing. In South Korea, red ink is considered a bad intention.

Don’t panic over these matters. It’s nothing like if you make a mistake, it’s over. Just keep these things in your mind and be confident.

1. The Tower of the Juche Idea

The Juche Tower is among the most recognizable structures in North Korea, and is easily spotted on the skyline of Pyongyang, the capital city. It was built in 1982, and represents the political ideology of Kim II Sung, the first leader of North Korea. The torch at the top of the tower always remains lit.

Getting There : The tower is located along the east bank of the River Taedong, in central Pyongyang. It's easily accessible by tour bus or car.

Safety : Be respectful when visiting. Follow your guide's instructions regarding photography and behavior, especially on the viewing platform.

2. The Arch of Triumph

Getting There : Samjiyon has several train stations that make getting there from Pyongyang fairly straightforward. One train station is reserved for the president.

4. Kim Il-sung Square

5. The Kumsusan Palace of the Sun

Also known as the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, this mausoleum houses the remains of Kim II Sung, North Korea's founder, and his son, Kim Jong II. The bodies of both leaders are on display in glass sarcophagi. It is the largest mausoleum dedicated to a communist leader in the world.

Getting There : The palace is located to the north of central Pyongyang, upstream from the Tower and other tourist attractions.

North Korea will allow visitors to enter at least part of the country starting in December after the reclusive country shut its doors to the outside world for nearly five years because of strict COVID-19 restrictions.

Tourism in the northeastern city of Samjiyon — and possibly the rest of the country — would resume by the end of this year, tour companies revealed this week.

“Having waited for over 4 years to make this announcement, Koryo Tours is very excited for the opening of North Korean tourism once again,” one Beijing-based company said on its website.

Another travel agency, KTG Tours, also announced this week tourists could visit Samjiyon this winter. 

“Exact dates to be confirmed,” the company wrote on Facebook . “So far just Samjiyon has been officially confirmed but we think that Pyongyang and other places will open too!!!”

North Korean leaders have been building what they claim is a “socialist utopia” in Samjiyon, a city near the Chinese border. The area is supposed to be a “model of highly-civilized mountain city” that has new apartments, hotels, ski resorts and other institutions, such as medical and cultural.

While international flights in and out of the hermit kingdom run by despot dictator Kim Jong Un restarted last year and a small group of Russian tourists received a private tour in February, the Asian nation’s borders have been sealed since 2020.

The open borders still exclude American citizens.

All US passports are invalid to travel in, out, or through North Korea unless special permission is granted by the Secretary of State, according to the State Department.

It felt like a dream. Here I was, on a boat a couple of miles offshore from a secluded island in the middle of Fiji, ready to jump into its crystal-clear waters and cross off a bucket-list item of mine.  

I zipped up my wetsuit and donned my scuba diving tank. The visibility was perfect as I dove about 30 feet to a coral reef, a hotspot where manta rays come to be cleaned by other fish.  

In just a few minutes, several reef mantas glided by, their 10-foot wingspan dwarfing me. They drifted gracefully around the reef, ignoring my presence and going about their day.   

It was completely mesmerizing.

This is just one of many intimate encounters travelers can have with Fiji’s stunning natural world. From its picturesque beaches to vibrant marine reefs, these awe-inspiring experiences are a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving nature for posterity – a pillar in sustainable tourism.  

For many bucket list destinations around the world, sustainable tourism is more than a buzzword – it’s a necessity. Pacific islands are dreamy but face limited resources and heavy reliance on tourism. In Fiji, tourism drives 40% of the economy, according to the World Bank . However, tourism strains the environment through development and consumption. These challenges only add Fiji’s vulnerabilities to climate change, such as rising sea levels, eroding coastlines, and flash flooding.

“For us Fijians, we don’t have sky towers and theme parks to sell, the only thing we sell is the sun, sand, smiles and sea,” Sunishma Singh, sustainability lead at Tourism Fiji, told USA TODAY. “In order for us to maintain or even increase (tourism), we need to take care of our natural resources.” 

The country committed to a sustainable tourism industry as stated in its 2021 tourism development plan, which focuses on environmental stewardship and community empowerment. In 2023, Fiji became a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), which establishes global sustainable standards for destination management, and is pursuing certification.  

In 2022, Fiji welcomed over 636,000 international visitors, but only 10% of travelers participated in sustainable activities, according to a survey by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation . 

In 2022, Americans made up 11% of all visitors to Fiji, staying longer than other international travelers. They said they were drawn to Fiji for its natural beauty and that it had always been on their bucket lists. Fiji Airways is the only airline with direct flights from the U.S. to Fiji, taking 10 hours from Los Angeles. 

After scuba diving with manta rays and spending time in a local village, I fell in love with Fiji. Traveling there gave me a deep appreciation for its natural beauty and culture, but also made me reflect on the importance of preserving Fiji's future, so both travelers and locals can enjoy the same wonders I did.  

Fall in love with nature  

The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), the world’s largest diving organization, agrees. To get travelers involved in protecting Fiji’s natural environment, the organization is pushing for regenerative tourism through scuba diving – a term they coined “regenerative diving.” Fiji is home to over 42% of the world’s coral species and one of the first PADI Eco Centers – which are conservation-focused dive operators – in the South Pacific.

At Wakaya Island Resort, where I dove with mantas, divers can join the resort’s nonprofit partner, the Manta Trust Fiji , and record the mantas they see at the resort’s reefs to aid in the effort of keeping track of population numbers.  

“By participating in hands-on citizen science, healing local ecosystems and communities, establishing a collaborative relationship with nature, respecting local cultures and, most importantly, shifting our collective perspectives to one of giving back – rather than taking – we can regenerate our watery home – driving global ocean change,” said Julie Anderson, Director of Brand + Media for PADI.  

Find sustainable accommodations  

Resorts and hotels are on the frontlines of the visitor experience including impacting how sustainable your trip will be, from their infrastructure and operations to activity offerings. Travelers should do their research and choose wisely.  

My first Fijian resort was Waya Island Resort , a small adults-only property that opened in 2024 on Waya Island. Each of the 17 bures – free-standing Fijian guest bungalows – features solar panels on the roof to slowly phase out usage of the resort’s generator. Yalobi village, located on the other side of the island, is home to 90% of the resort’s staff. The resort also sources much of its fresh produce from local farmers in the village. 

At the Six Senses Fiji , a luxury resort on Malolo Island, I got to see how a leading resort chain pursues sustainability. The resort sources nearly all ingredients for its restaurants from local purveyors, which keeps cash flow in the country while exposing guests to the local cuisine and flavors – a win-win. The resort also uses Tesla solar batteries for most of its power and filters water on-site for its refillable bottles in guest rooms to cut down on waste and energy consumption. (The resort also makes these sustainability metrics transparent by displaying them on a sign for guests to see.) 

Throughout the property are “touch points” to educate guests on making greener choices even back home, according to Raquel Saavedra, sustainability manager at Six Senses Fiji. Think pigs and chickens that live on property to teach about composting. 

“Tourism from the start has a lot of negative impacts … but we can try to bring our impact to a minimum and give back,” Saavedra said.  

By that, she means several projects underway to help Solevu, the local village that leases the land to the resort, become more self-sustaining, such as purchasing a trash incinerator and rainwater tanks for the residents. 

Give back to the place  

When travelers take time out of their vacation to give back through volunteering, they not only help meet community needs but gain a rewarding experience for themselves. Research shows that volunteering while traveling can improve your well-being and give you a greater sense of purpose.  

“Voluntourism is really kind of connecting and thinking of what the traveler can do,” said Anna Abelson, a professor of sustainable travel at New York University’s Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality, told USA TODAY. “It's also such a transformative experience not only for the host community, but obviously for the traveler.”  

At Six Senses Fiji, I joined members of the Coral Gardeners – a reef restoration organization headquartered at the resort – on a boat trip to clean algae from the coral nurseries. Since 2023, Fiji has suffered mass coral bleaching from warming water temperatures, which impacts marine life and the people who depend on the oceans. Resort guests can attend weekly presentations by the Coral Gardeners and then join the nonprofit on snorkeling trips to take care of the coral, helping to conserve the very ocean they’re enjoying.

Immerse yourself in culture  

Most Fijian islands are not only home to resorts but also local villages that allow visitors on certain days to get a closer look at Fijian culture. “The villages, that is part of what they do week in, week out,” said Marika Kuilamu, assistant lecturer for the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at The University of the South Pacific in Fiji, told USA TODAY.  

Tucked behind Wakaya Island Resort is a village where the approximately 80 workers of the resort and their families live. There’s a church, school, community hall and series of small duplex homes.  

As I set off for my visit to the village, I wrapped the sulu (Fijian sarong) around my waist, as is customary.  

“The idea is that it's very important not only to visit and stay in the property, but also to have that immersive experience of connecting with the culture and understanding the locals and roaming around,” said Abelson. 

After spending time at the school meeting the kids and chatting with the teachers, I felt a deeper connection to Fijian culture. Their warm hospitality added a special touch to my stay, making it unforgettable. I live in Hawaii, another popular island destination, so I know how powerful it is for a traveler to connect with the local community.  

“Doing an experience like that, (travelers) can go back and say, we weren’t just at the hotel 24/7, we had the chance to visit and interact,” said Kuilamu.

Disney World? A Viking cruise down the Danube? A drive from coast to coast with stops at every roadside attraction? When getting out of the house and going on vacation, the options are virtually limitless. Virtually, but not absolutely — particularly for adventurous travelers interested in visiting one of the most isolated countries on Earth, North Korea. The country closed its borders entirely five years ago during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

That may be about to change.

For the first time in half a decade, the avowedly communist enclave is preparing to welcome tourist groups back into parts of the country as early as this coming December, according to China-based tour operators Koryo Tours. "We have received confirmation from our local partner that tourism to Samjiyon and potentially the rest of the country will officially resume in December 2024," the group said in a press release . Described as "the most famous region in North Korea in the winter for tourism," Samjiyon is "the most significant and sacred place" for the entire Korean peninsula, Koryo said. The agency predicts it will have a "finalized itinerary for the area and more information as well as dates and prices in the coming days and weeks."

'Not a full reopening'

The decision to make Samjiyon the first spot open to foreign tourism is "significant" Semafor said. The tourism-associated area has been a popular destination for Chinese visitors coming across the two countries' shared border in the past, helping North Korea generate "vital revenue amid international sanctions."

Earlier this summer, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reprimanded a group of senior officials overseeing construction in the region for their "irresponsibility," declaring the city would become an "oasis of our people and the world people and make tourism a major driving force of regional development" while he personally inspected the project, The Korea Times said. 

This winter's planned tourism opportunity is "not a full reopening of the country back to what it was, or more than what it was," Koryo Tours' Simon Cockerell cautioned during a podcast taping at The Independent . "It's a specific opening of one, relatively obscure-up-till-now area." 

Moreover, this coming December will not be the first opportunity for tour groups to enter the country since the Covid lockdown. Last year, "small tour groups from Russia" were granted entry to North Korea "amid Kim's deepening partnership with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin," CNN said. That exchange is more "associated with the North Korean support for the Russian war effort," said Cockerell. Just this month, Russia sent North Korea more than 400 goats as part of a "wide-ranging deal covering sectors including education, agriculture and tourism," Politico said. 

'We can only have peace when this travel ban is lifted'

For as much as North Korea's impending tourism opening may seem like the sort of opportunity an adventurous traveler should jump on, do not expect to be able to hop on a flight to Pyongyang just yet. It will likely be "only Russian tourists and possibly Chinese visiting in any real numbers at first" if North Korea does not offer "direct Samjiyon flights to a neutral connection country like Mongolia," Chad O'Carroll, CEO of US-based analysis firm Korea Risk Group, said at BBC . Even if such countries do, American passport holders are banned from visiting the communist country: The U.S. State Department announced the renewal of its prohibition on travel "to, in or through the Democratic People's Republic of Korea" earlier this month. 

"We can only have peace when this travel ban is lifted," Cathi Choi, co-director of Women Cross DMZ, said at The Hill . "In addition to divided family members, everyday people in North Korea, South Korea and the United States will all suffer from these consequences." 

Allowing tourism "can only bring positives," said Cockerell. "The cure for isolation is not more isolation."
