Days 1 and 2: Basavanagudi and Gavipuram

On your first two days of Bangalore itinerary, spend time exploring and wandering around the two oldest areas of Bangalore city.

Following your breakfast on any of the day, head to one of the oldest public parks in Bangalore, Lalbagh Botanical Garden. Spread across 240 acres, Lalbagh Botanical Garden was commissioned by Hyder Ali in 1760 and later completed by his son Tipu Sultan. Lalbagh translates to “Red Garden” in English, named after the vibrant Lalbagh Rock that stands majestically in the garden.

india trip planner bangalore

Home to a diverse collection of exotic plants, flowers, and trees, Lalbagh is a horticultural paradise and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. The garden houses a unique glasshouse, inspired by London’s Crystal Palace, which hosts bi-annual flower shows attracting enthusiasts from around the country. Lalbagh’s famous flower clock, designed with seasonal flowerbeds, is another attraction. With plenty of things to do in the park, stroll around and see some of the highlights.

With old buildings and houses, Gavipuram Heritage Walk is perfect to see and explore the oldest area of the city. Starting from Kempambudhi lake and finishing at Hari Hara Gudda, this trail is for history enthusiasts. The walk is around 1.5 kilometres and passes through many landmarks and historical places.

Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple is a unique and ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Gangadhareshwara. Believed to have been built in the 9th century by Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore, the temple features a large Shiva Linga and intricate sculptures. One of the remarkable aspects of the temple is the phenomenon that occurs during Makar Sankranti when sunlight passes through the horns of the Nandi (bull) idol and illuminates the Shiva Linga in the inner sanctum. This celestial event draws devotees and tourists alike to witness the temple’s unique architecture and natural alignment. Carved out of a monolithic rock, the temple is known for its architectural marvel and historical significance.

Top Restaurants to Try in Bangalore/Bengaluru

On one of the days, start your day by having a delicious and authentic breakfast at Mavalli Tiffin Room (MTR). Founded in 1924, MTR is a renowned vegetarian restaurant located next to Lalbagh Botanical Garden. You must try the Bisibele Bath and filter coffee.

Founded in 1943, Vidhyarthi Bhavan is another popular restaurant serving authentic South Indian food. With more than 3000 people walking in each day, this heritage restaurant is something not to be missed.

Bangalore has an entire street dedicated to street food. With many food stalls serving all kinds of food and dishes, ending the day at Thindi Beedhi is a unique experience to have.

Situated in the northern part of Bangalore, Malleshwaram is another area that is one of the oldest areas in the city.

Dating back to the 17 th  century, Kadu Malleshwara Temple is an ancient temple in Bangalore. The area of Malleshwaram is named after the deity of the temple, Malleshwara. It was built by Venkoji, brother of Maratha King Shivaji and has a huge religious importance among the residents.

Malleshwaram is popular for its art. And hence has a Malleshwaram Street Art Trail with 12 murals, depicting and showcasing the childhood memories of Malleshwaram area. Created as part of the project Malleshwaram Hogona by a group of artists Geechugalu, these murals hold a dear place among the locals. The walk is just around 2 kilometres and can easily be done in less than an hour.

Top Places to Eat in Bangalore/Bengaluru

Famous for its Benne Masala Dose, Shri Sagar CTR is a famous food joint in Malleshwaram. The restaurant is favourite among the locals, tourists, and celebrities. As it is usually very crowded, be prepared to wait in a long queue to get in.

Nandi Hills is a popular destination celebrated for its breathtaking scenic beauty and historical importance. Standing at an elevation of 1,478 metres, the hill provides sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding villages and towns. The hill station derives its name from the ancient Nandi Temple situated atop the hills, and the area has abundant natural landscapes with lush greenery and delightful weather. En route, make sure to make a pitstop at the historic Devanahalli Fort , dating back to the 16th century, adding an enriching historical dimension to your excursion.

Note that the highway has plenty of eateries and you can stop at any of them for local food and dishes.

Day 6: Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road and Surrounds

On the sixth day of your Bangalore itinerary, explore the MG road and the surrounding streets and areas.

india trip planner bangalore

Situated in the Ulsoor locality of Bangalore, Ulsoor Someshwara Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the name of Someshwara. Believed to date back to the Chola period, the temple has intricate architecture and has major cultural significance in the city. It showcases Dravidian style of architecture with detailed carvings and sculptures depicting mythological stories. The temple’s sanctum sanctorum houses the main deity, Lord Someshwara, while the complex also features other shrines dedicated to various gods and goddesses.

Established in 1870, Cubbon Park covers an area of 300 acres. Offering a refreshing retreat in the heart of the city, Cubbon Park is one of the favourite public parks among the locals. Named after Sir Mark Cubbon, the then Commissioner of Mysuru, the park is adorned with a diverse range of indigenous and exotic plant species, enhancing its botanical charm. Visitors can see the massive trees, vibrant flowerbeds, thematic gardens, and ornamental structures within the park. Cubbon Park also houses important government buildings and cultural institutions, making it a central hub for leisure, recreation, and cultural activities in Bangalore.

india trip planner bangalore

Completed in 1956, Vidhana Soudha is the seat of government in Karnataka and serves as the legislative assembly building for the state. Built in Neo-Dravidian and Indo-Saracenic architectural styles, the structure showcases a grand facade, intricate carvings, and a central dome, showcasing an amalgamation of cultural and architectural heritage. The landmark is a symbol of political and administrative prowess.

Located in the heart of Bangalore, Commercial Street is one of the most iconic and bustling shopping destinations in Bangalore. The street is home to both street markets and upscale boutiques, catering to the varied tastes and preferences of shoppers. From traditional Indian wear to trendy Western clothing, Commercial Street has it all.

Unique Restaurants to Try in Bangalore/Bengaluru

If you love tea, then Infinitea is the place for you. You can try various tea flavours at this restaurant enjoying Italian cuisine. Situated on Cunningham Road, this restaurant is a personal favourite.

Started in 1940 as a bakery, Koshy’s on St Mark’s Road is the city’s legendary restaurant. Ensure you try the sandwiches and coffee.

Day 7: Bannerghatta National Park

On your last day, experience one of the most rewarding activities available in the city.

At Bannerghatta National Park, you can volunteer at the Bear Rescue Centre for one or multiple days. With around 60 rescued sloth bears, activities include data entry of health records, preparing bear food, cleaning enclosures, and crafting enrichment items for the bears. This activity is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and for people who want to make a difference in society. It is important to note that close contact or touching the bears is not permitted during these meaningful volunteer engagements.

Bangalore Guide: Planning Your Trip

What to Know Before You Go

india trip planner bangalore

Soltan Frédéric/Getty Images

Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, is another Indian city that's undergoing a change back to its traditional name, Bengaluru. It's a contemporary, fast growing and prosperous city that's home to India's IT industry. Many multinational corporations have set up their Indian head offices there. As a result, the city is full of young professionals and has a vibrant air about it, with a flourishing pub culture.

There's been a huge population growth in Bangalore in recent years. About 12.5 million people now live there, making it India's fourth largest city after Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. Although Bangalore isn't regarded as a must-visit tourist destination in India, many people like the city because of its greenery and interesting buildings. Unfortunately, some its appeal has been lost to growing traffic congestion and garbage disposal issues though.

TripSavvy / Ivey Redding

Find out what to know before you go in this Bangalore travel guide.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Due to its elevation, Bangalore is blessed with relatively pleasant climate. Daytime temperatures remain fairly constant, between 26-29 degrees Celsius (79-84 degrees Fahrenheit), for most of the year. The temperature usually only exceeds 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) during the hot summer months from March to May, when it can reach around 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit). Winters in Bangalore are warm and sunny, although the temperature does drop at night to around 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). Winter mornings can also be foggy. September and October experience the most monsoon season rain.
  • Language: Kannada and English. Hindi is also widely spoken.
  • Currency: Indian rupee.
  • Time Zone: UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) +5.5 hours. Bangalore does not have Daylight Saving Time. Read more about India's time zone.
  • Getting Around: The new Bangalore Metro train, Uber and Ola Cabs have revolutionized transport in the city. Previously, getting around the city could be challenging, as taxis are only available by prior booking and auto rickshaws are notorious for trying to cheat tourists. Read more about transport options in Bangalore .
  • Travel Tip: Stay in the Central Business District to avoid getting stuck in traffic jams.

Getting There

Bangalore has a brand new international airport that opened in May 2008. However, it's located 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city center. The travel time to the airport is between one and two hours, depending on traffic. Read more about Bangalore airport .

Bangalore City railway station receives long distance trains from all over India. Here are the best trains from Mumbai to Bangalore .

Neighborhoods in Bangalore

Bangalore's Central Business District is situated around M.G. Road, which extends east from Cubbon Park and the imposing neo-Dravidian-style Vidhana Soudha (seat of the Karnataka government). It includes UB City , the city's biggest luxury commercial development project that's become a hot place to shop, dine, and party.

Koramangala in south Bangalore and Indiranagar in east Bangalore are other hip and stylish neighborhoods renowned for their nightlife, restaurants, and pubs.

Malleswaram, in northwest Bangalore, dates back to the 1890s and is one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. It's a great place to explore on foot, as it has well-maintained sidewalks (a rarity in India!).

Bangalore's main IT hub is located in Whitefield, about 20 kilometers (18.6 miles) east of the city center. However, this rapidly evolving neighborhood has also become an upmarket residential district with gated communities, spacious villas and luxury apartments.

Things to Do

The city's parks and gardens are a big attraction. Bangalore also has some insightful walking tours for those interested in history and heritage.

Check out these top tourist places to visit in Bangalore and top temples and spiritual places in Bangalore.

If you feel like venturing further afield, there are also some popular tourist places near Bangalore.

Where to Eat and Drink

If you love beer, you'll love visiting the many brew pubs and sampling craft beers. The Biere Club near UB City is Bangalore's first microbrewery. However, arguably, better beer can be found nearby at Arbor Brewing Company (India's first American-style craft brewery) on Brigade Road in Ashok Nagar, and the Bier Library in Koramangala.

Foodies won't be disappointed either. Head to these iconic Indian cuisine restaurants in Bangalore for all budgets.

Where to Stay

Luxury travelers will be pleased to know Bangalore has some fabulous five-star hotels, ranging from colonial to chic, and they're among India's finest. These ones are all located in areas handy for sightseeing. Purple Lotus is a modern boutique hotel in the heart of the action. Electric Cats is a cool place to stay for backpackers and budget travelers.

Culture and Customs

Bangalore was founded in 1537 by a local chieftain, who upon being given the land by a Vijaynagar emperor, built a mud fort and temple there. Over the years, the city has undergone a massive transformation. Its earlier days saw it passed from ruler to ruler, until the British Raj took hold of it and located their south Indian administration there in 1831. The British constructed considerable infrastructure. After India gained independence, Bangalore grew into an important center for education, science, and information technology.

Bangalore is a relatively safe Indian city and organized crime is almost non-existent. The city is also quite liberal in its attitude compared to many Indian cities, resulting in better treatment of women and less staring. However, be careful of pickpockets in tourist areas. You may also be approached by men to pose for selfies, which you can refuse if you don't feel comfortable.

The usual tourist scams also operate in Bangalore, but again, to a lesser extent than in many other Indian cities. Overall, Bangalore is a friendly city to visit.

Bangalore Itinerary: how to spend one day in Bangalore

This post is a Bangalore itinerary about how to spend one day in Bangalore. Bangalore, also known as Bengaluru, is the capital of the Indian state of Karnatak a and one of the largest cities in South India.

Bangalore has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century when it was a small village. During the British colonial rule in India, Bangalore became an important center for the British army and saw significant development. After India gained independence, Bangalore transformed into a major center for science, technology, and aerospace industries.

Nowadays, Bangalore is a very modern and progressive city famous for its information technology and known as the Silicon valley of India.

Why visit Bangalore

Bangalore might lack any big tourist attractions, but it is a pleasant city to spend some time in. First of all, Bangalore is less chaotic and hectic as some other big Indian cities like Delhi or Jaipur . Second of all, Bangalore is a green city full of lush gardens and beautiful parks. At last, Bangalore’s higher elevation means a moderate climate.

Bangalore is also a very dynamic city with a young population. As a result, the city has lots of trendy cafes, beer pubs and a great choice of restaurants. As Bangalore attracts people from all over India, you can find every regional cuisine there is.

With a few historic sights and lots of culture and food, Bangalore is definitely worth a visit. In this post I will explain the best way to spend one day in Bangalore.

A Bangalore itinerary on how to spend one day in Bangalore

A one day in Bangalore itinerary

Spending one day in Bangalore is enough to see the city’s attractions and include some of it’s best culinary experiences. Bangalore is a great city for those that love food. In this one day Bangalore itinerary I will focus mostly on South Indian cuisine, but you should know that in Bangalore you can get anything you want.

If there is one reason to spend more than one day in Bangalore, it is the food. Ever wanted to try Gujarati or Bengal cuisine? There will be a restaurant in Bangalore for sure. And if you are tired of Indian food and want something else. Bangalore has that too.

I personally love the tastes of South India that are so different from the north. Bangalore is a great city to explore the variety that exists in South Indian cuisine and therefore I will share the best places to try some of my favourite South Indian dishes in Bangalore.

Breakfast at Airlines Hotel

There are so many great breakfast places in Bangalore that it will be hard to say what is the best. My personal favourite is a South Indian breakfast of Idli Vada with sambar . Airlines Hotel is conveniently located near Cubbon Park where you can start your one day Bangalore itinerary

Cubbon Park

The best place to start your one day Bangalore itinerary is the greenery of Cubbon Park. This park is 150 years old and is home to hundreds of plants and flower species. It is very popular among Bangaloreans and you can join the locals on their early morning walk.

Cubbon park is a gentle introduction to Bangalore and is centrally located near some of the most popular shopping streets like MG road and Brigade road. The park has a colonial history and is surrounded by other british era historic buildings such as the vidhana soudha, the high court and the library.

Nearest Metro station : Cubbon Park or Ambedkar Vidhana Soudha

Cubbon Park in Bangalore, India

If you leave Cubbon park at the southern entrance near Kempegowda tower and the Hudson Memorial church it is a 30 minute walk to the Raja market. The biggest reason to visit this bustling part of Bangalore is to see the famous flower market.

KR Market is a multi floor building where almost every vendor at the ground floor sells flower garlands. It is a fragrant and colorful sight that is best seen from above. Personally, I always love the hustle and bustle from the markets in India and this was one of my favourite places in Bangalore.

I decided to walk from Cubbon Park to the KR market. You can also opt to take the metro or an uber. If you plan on taking an uber you should take into account that the Raja market area is a labyrinth of narrow and crowded streets that are hard to navigate for vehicles.

Walk : 30 minutes from Cubbon Park

Nearest Metro station : Chickpet

Flower market in Bangalore

Jamia Masjid

South of the KR market along busy NR road and SJP road is the muslim area of Bangalore. A great place to explore on foot. As a non vegetarian it is in the muslim areas that I often find the best meat curries and kebabs and Bangalore also did not dissapoint in that regard.

At first sight the area around NR road is not very scenic, but look closely and you will find some interesting muslim shrines and several mosques. At last, the jamia masjid is hard to miss. This is the largest mosque in Bangalore and can accommodate up to 10,000 devotees.

The mosque is quite impressive. It was designed by an architect from Hyderabad and is made from white marble from Rajasthan. There are special prayers on the death anniversary of Tipu Sultan when thousands of people gather at the mosque

Walk : 10 minutes from KR flower market

Bangalore Fort

Bangalore Fort is one of the oldest structures in Bangalore. It’s history goes back to Kempe gowda. A chieftain from the Vijayanagara empire, the same empire famous for the magnificent ruins of its capital Hampi .

Kempe Gowda is the founder of Bangalore and was the first to build fortifications. His vision was to develop a new city that would equal Hampi. The original Bangalore fort was from mud with a trench and nine entrance gates.

In 1758 Hyder Ali, the ruler of the kingdom of Mysore , captured Bangalore. He decided to renovate the fort and strengthen it with stone. His son Tipu Sultan further extended the fort and even built a summer palace.

He could only enjoy his palace in Bangalore for a short while as the British army took hold of Bangalore fort in 1791. Now all that remains is the Delhi gate and some parts of the thick fortress walls.

Walk : 10 minutes from Jamia Masjid or flower market

Nearest Metro station : Krishna rajendra market

Bangalore Fort

Tipu Sultan’s Summer palace

A 7 minute walk down the road from the Bangalore Fort is Tipu’s Sultan summer palace. This short walk gives you an idea how large the Bangalore Fort was as the palace was once within its walls.

Tipu Sultan’s summer palace was built completely from teak wood, just like his summer palace in Srirangapatna. Tipu Sultan was known as the tiger of Mysore and fought several wars against the British army. He was eventually killed by the British in his fort in Srirangapatna in 1799.

The small, but beautifully decorated palace also has a small museum about Tipu Sultan and his achievements.

Walk : 7 minutes from Bangalore Fort

Tipu Sultan palace in Bangalore

Lunch at Vidyarthi Bhavan

After a long morning of walking and sightseeing it’s time for lunch. The South Indian restaurant of Vidhyarti Bhavan is on the way between Tipu Sultan’s palace and Lalbagh botanical garden. It’s the perfect lunch stop, not only because of its location, but most of all because of its excellent butter masala dosas.

Dosas are south indian rice pancakes and they are one of my favourite lunch dishes when in South India. Vidhyarti Bhavan has served them for more than 75 years now. Many say they are the best you can get in Bangalore. The benne dosas are indeed very delicious and a must try.

Walk : 10 minutes from National College Metro station, 30 minutes from Tipu Sultan’s palace (best to take the metro from Krishna rajendra market to national college metro and then walk, or take an uber).

Nearest Metro : National college (green line)

Lalbagh Botanical garden

After a full stomach you can choose to either walk 20 minutes to Lalbagh garden or take an uber. Lalbagh garden is even older than Cubbon park. It was Hyder Ali that planned the botanical garden, but like the renovation of the Bangalore Fort it was Tipu Sultan that finished it.

Tipu Sultan wanted it to be like the Mughal gardens from Persia that also adorned many of the Mughal architecture in places like Delhi and Agra . He imported plants and trees from different countries.

When the British Army took over Bangalore they also took over the management of the garden. They planted more trees and added a bandstand as well as a glass house.

Nowadays the garden is a very popular place for Bangaloreans and tourists. Although there are still bonsai, rose and lotus gardens, other parts feel more like a huge park with walkways and vendors selling cold drinks and snacks. Nevertheless it is a very nice place to hang out in Bangalore

Walk : 30 minutes from Vidhyarti bhavan (consider uber)

Nearest Metro : Lalbagh (green line)

Bangalore Palace

Bangalore palace. I am still not sure whether I liked it or not. I thought it was a weird structure that seemed out of place even in a city as eclectic as Bangalore.

The massive palace grounds were bought by the Mysore Royal Family that wanted to have a place to stay for the Maharaja prince that was going to Bangalore for his education.

In 4 years they built a somewhat pompous palace. Apparently the building was inspired by Windsor castle in England which explains the towers. Part of the palace is open to visitors.

Inside you can visit an open courtyard on the ground floor. A decorated staircase with paintings leads to the yellow Durbar hall. The interior sometimes reminded me a bit of Mysore Palace because of the use of bright colours and pillars.

The palace is still in the hands of the Mysore royal family. To earn money the palace also has an attraction park for kinds. Besides a well mainted small garden, most of the public grounds are neglected and only occasionally used for public events.

Nearest Metro : there is not really a nearby metro station within walking distance, best to take an uber.

Dinner at Mavalli tiffin room

Mavalli tiffin room (MTR) is Bangalore’s oldest and most famous restaurant. It is so popular that it is recommended to make a reservation in advance. There are several branches in Bangalore and they even went abroad to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Dubai.

The restaurant at Lalbagh is where it all started in 1924. The menu is mostly South Indian dishes, but with some local specialities and inventions. Apparently Rava idli was a MTR invention during World War 2 when rice was in short supply.

MTR is the best place to try food from Karnataka. One of their specialties is Bisibele bath. A rice dish with lentils, vegetables, nuts and spices. You can’t really go wrong with a South Indian thali either.

Nearest Metro : there are several branches throughout Bangalore. Close to Bangalore Palace is Namma MTR

More than one day in Bangalore

What if you have more than one day in Bangalore? Although with this Bangalore itinerary you have seen most of what the city has to offer there are also a number of day trips you can take. One of the most popular day trips is to the scenic Nandi hills or the ancient temple complex in Lepakshi.

Bangalore itself also has a number of museums and temples that are not included in this itinerary. It would take years to visit all of Bangalore’s temples. Some noteworthy temples are the new and impressively large ISKCON temple, the Nandi temple with a large statue of the nandi the bull and the Kote Venkateshwara temple, the oldest temple in the city.

One day in Bangalore travel tips

Where to stay in bangalore.

Where to stay in Bangalore depends a lot on how long you will stay in the city. If you are staying only one day in Bangalore I would choose a central location. Bangalore is a big city and with the congested traffic it is very easy to underestimate the time it takes to get around.

Locul central is close to Cubbon Park and is a clean and professional hostel if you don’t mind staying in a dormitory. Locul uptown from the same owner is near Bangalore palace and has both dormitories as well as private rooms.

Because of my internship I had to stay for extended times in Bangalore. A great budget option that was not too far from the place I worked was the Little blue window hostel at BTM lay-out. A safe neighbourhood with lots of restaurants and trendy cafes.

Other safe neighbourhoods with great facilities for long term stays are Koramangala and Indiranagar.

A Bangalore itinerary on how to spend one day in Bangalore

How to get around in Bangalore

The thing I remember most from Bangalore is the traffic. When I was in Bangalore I travelled every day from my hostel to the office. On the map it only looked like a small distance, but it almost took me an hour by bus. It probably would have taken the same amount of time if I had simply walked.

If you have only one day in Bangalore you should take this into account. Getting around Bangalore isn’t always easy and might take longer than you expect. I also have good news though. The best tourist attractions are not that far from each other.

This one day Bangalore itinerary can almost all be done on foot. Otherwise it is just a short uber ride to the next place. Only Bangalore palace is a bit out of the way and would probably involve the typical Bangalore traffic experience.

The Bangalore metro, or Namma metro started in 2011 and is a great way to dodge the crazy Bangalore traffic. Most central locations and tourist sights are within walking distance of a metro station. So far there is a green line and a purple line.

My recommendation is to travel by metro if you can. It is a safe and quick way to get from A to B.

Uber and Ola

Uber is a good way to get around in Bangalore for short distances. India has its own similar business called Ola cabs that is even more popular. The good thing about both Ola and Uber is that it is cheaper than a tuk tuk and you do not need to negotiate the price. Both offer a pool option in which you share your ride with others that makes it even more affordable.

Ola also has a tuk tuk option that is one of the best and most affordable ways to travel for shorter distances. I never had to wait long for an Ola or Uber to come and most of the time when I ordered the pool option I had no other passengers.

I travelled a lot by bus in Bangalore, but it honestly took me a while to figure things out. If you are staying only one day in Bangalore I can’t really recommend taking a bus. Because of the traffic they are slow and the timings on google maps aren’t always right. I sometimes had to wait a long time for the right bus to arrive.

How to get to Bangalore

Bangalore is a city that has great connections by trains and buses from all over India. Convenient night trains run to Hampi, Chennai and Goa , but you can go as far as Mumbai and Delhi if you want to.

You can check the train time tables and book your tickets online directly through the Indian railways (IRCTC). Unfortunately this is not always a straightforward process. For a small extra fee you can use 12goAsia or Makemytrip .

When to visit Bangalore

The best time to visit Bangalore is from September till March when the climate is pleasant with cool and dry conditions. During these months, temperatures average between 15°C and 25°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

In April and May it starts to get very hot in Bangalore. June is the start of the monsoon season when the city experiences heavy rainfall, providing a welcome relief from the hot and humid conditions.

Sustainable Travel in Bangalore

Bangalore is a very green and clean city compared to other Indian cities. Tourism is growing though and has both positive and negative impacts. Traveling sustainably in Bangalore, involves conscious choices that minimize your environmental impact and support the local community.

Support the local community:  You can support the community by purchasing goods and services from local vendors, artisans, markets and restaurants. It is better to try South Indian cuisine that uses local ingredients rather than imported foreign foods. South Indian food is very vegetarian friendly and it is easy to follow a vegan diet.

Stay in small scale sustainable hotels : It is also better to stay in locally-owned guesthouses or homestays to support the local economy directly. These accommodations often have a more positive impact on the environment compared to large hotels.

Where possible, I can recommend staying in a homestay for an authentic cultural experience. You might want to bring a small book with pictures of your family to break the ice.

You can also try to look for guesthouses or homestays that prioritizes sustainable practices. That said, environmental awareness is still low. It’s up to you to use water sparsely, turn off lights, air conditioning, and heating when leaving your accommodation.

Use public transport : Bangalore has a well-developed public transportation system. Opt for public transport, whenever possible, instead of private cars to reduce carbon emissions.

Respect the culture : Besides environmental concerns it is also important to respect the culture. Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka with a Hindu majority. Therefore, learn about the local customs and traditions beforehand and be mindful of your behavior.

People will appreciate it, if you dress modestly, especially at religious sites. Learning a few basic phrases in Kannada, can go a long way in building meaningful connections and to learn more about the local culture. Not everybody is happy to have their picture taken. When in doubt, ask permission.

The Perfect Guide to your Coastal South India Trip - Bangalore to Kerala & Tamil Nadu | Itinerary, hotels and much more

South India Itinerary 7 days, South India Itinerary, Places to see in South India, Places to visit in Kanyakumari, Places to visit in Kochi

india trip planner bangalore

I started my journey from Bangalore and rode to some of the best and exotic locations in Kerala and Tamil Nadu over a period of 8 days. So here goes my South India Itinerary!

Before we jump into the itinerary, watch this short video. After watching which, you wouldn't resist planning a trip to South India!

Route Map :

Day 1: Bangalore - Kochi via Salem (540 km - 10 hours)

india trip planner bangalore

Start time:  5-6 AM. The earlier the better. Road conditions:  At the time of writing, the roads are amazing except for a small patch where some road construction was going on at the time of my visit. In fact, the roads are so amazing, in the Tamil Nadu region, that the speed limit is 100, and that too in a 3 lane road with dividers. If you own a good motorcycle or car, you can easily hit the speed.  Fuel points:  There are enough fuel points along the way. If you are on a motorcycle, no need to carry any extra can for fuel. Accommodation at Kochi: If you are a solo traveler like me and prefer budget options, I would suggest hostels like Zostel or Trippr. They have pretty cheap dorms costing around ₹ 400-500 with Wi-Fi and A/C. If you are with family and want a personal room, you can book them as well, as there are many options around the place depending on your budget. Get a good sleep today, as you will be exploring the city of Kochi tomorrow.

Day 2: Places to visit in Kochi

If you are in Kochi for a day, there are really a lot of places to visit. You would want to prioritize based on your mood. Here are some of the places you can visit in Kochi.

Chinese Fishing Nets:  Chinse fishing nets are stationary fishing nets installed on the shore. They are operated with 4 or more long wooden poles connected to nets, which drops into the water and catches fish.

india trip planner bangalore

St Francis Church: This church is popular because Vasco da Gama's body was buried here. Later, it was excavated and moved to Portugal in 1539. Now there remains a place where his body was once buried.

india trip planner bangalore

Mattancherry Jew Town:  Jew town is a narrow street between Mattancherry Palace and the Synagogue. If you are an antique hunter or a collector, this place is for you. Most shops in the street have different antiques and share a story with the history of the place.

Other places to see in Kochi: Dutch Palace, Hill Palace museum, Athirappilly Falls.

Although Athirapilly Falls is beautiful, I wouldn't recommend driving there from Kochi, as it would take a whole day.

Watch my Kochi Episode below to know more:

Day 3: Kochi to Alleppey (60 km -1.5 hours)

Alleppey is known for its backwaters and beaches. When in Alleppey think not. Enjoy the beautiful beaches in Alleppey and go for a ride in the Alleppey backwaters in the evening, or even choose to stay at one of the boathouses.

Road conditions:  Narrow roads, but in good condition. Fuel points:  There are enough fuel points along the way and it's hardly 60 km away. No worries here. Accommodation at Alleppey:  If you are a solo traveler like me and prefer budget options, I would suggest hostels like Zostel or Trippr and many more. Surprisingly, there are plenty of hostels in Alleppey under budget. I visited at least 4-5 hostels, which are way better than Zostel Alleppey. All of them have pretty cheap dorms costing around ₹ 400-500 with Wi-Fi and A/C.

If you are an experiential traveler, you can stay in one of the beach houses or better yet boathouses.

What to do in Alleppey: As mentioned before, enjoy the beach and the boathouse experience. If you are tight on budget, you can take a Shikara ride in the backwaters in the evening for as cheap as ₹ 800-900 per boat.

Day 4: Alleppey to Kanyakumari via Thiruvananthapuram aka Trivandrum (240km - 6 hours)

Today's ride is not gonna be that tiring, but the road conditions are moderate with a lot of traffic. It's advisable to leave early from Alleppey. You would ride of some of the best roads today, from Tiruvananthapuram.

Kanyakumari is at the Southernmost tip of peninsular India. The feeling of being at a place Swami Vivekanand himself lived and loved is amazing. From here you can also witness the confluence of all three oceans Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea. This confluence is popularly known as Triveni Sangam. Tri means Three. Sangam means confluence.

Road conditions:  At the time of writing this, the roads are not bad. Some roads are narrow with no dividers. The roads from Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari are amazing! Fuel points:  There are enough fuel points along the way.

Places on the way: Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum is home to the richest temple on earth that ever existed. Swami Anantha Padmanabha Temple. You can pay a quick visit to the temple on the way. Right after Trivandrum, you will enter the state of Tamil Nadu. Accommodation at Kanyakumari:  I found it a bit difficult to find rooms for a single person, as some hotels denied room to me (solo traveler) outright. However, I did get a fairly decent room at ₹ 800 for a double room non AC.

Having said that, there are budget options and many hotels for family accommodation too. There are also sea-facing hotels, which charge you more just for the view. I suggest booking a hotel beforehand.

What to do in Kanyakumari:  It would be already evening by the time you reach Kanyakumari. If you are on time for Sunset, I recommend watching the sunset at Sunset Point in Kanyakumari.

Day 5: Places to visit in Kanyakumari

  • Kanyakumari Temple: Kanyakumari Temple is also known as  Bhagvaty Amman Temple. It is one of the 108 Shakti Peetha in Hindu mythology. The temple is one of the major Hindu temples across India and is mentioned in almost all the ancient Hindu scriptures. The temple sees thousands of pilgrims every year and the temple’s architecture is also quite unique

Day 6: Kanyakumari to Rameshwaram (300 km - 6 hours)

india trip planner bangalore

Start time:  8-9 AM. The earlier the better. Road conditions:  At the time of writing this, the roads are fabulous! To simply put, butter-smooth! Fuel points:  There are enough fuel points along the way.

Places on the way:  At Aralvaimozhi you will spot hundreds of windmills. You would want to click some pics on the way. Also, the magnificent Pamban bridge is just on the outskirts of Rameshwaram. Accommodation at Rameshwaram:  I did not find any hostels when I visited. However, there are a lot of budget stays and even exotic properties depending on your taste and budget constraints. Recommended to book beforehand or if you have time, you can also explore your options after reaching Rameswaram

What to do in Rameshwaram:  Rameswaram is home to one of 12 Jyotirlingas. Rameshwaram temple is a must-visit. It has an intricate design on the outside as well as on the inside of the temple. If it's already late reaching here, better to take a rest and keep your activities for the next day.

Rameshwaram is also famous for Pamban Bridge , which is also a rail bridge and the road bridge which connects Rameshwaram to the rest of India! The sighting of the train crossing over on the bridge is a beautiful sight to watch.

Pro Tip: Cellphones and cameras are not allowed inside the Rameshwaram Temple. If you are going there, you have to keep your cellphones in a locker, or there are other shop owners, where you can keep your devices for ₹20. Better to keep your devices in your hotel or car before visiting here

india trip planner bangalore

Day 7:Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi to Rameswaram (20 km - 30 minutes)

Start time:  5-5.30 AM. Start early from Rameshwaram to reach Dhanushkodi for sunrise. If the weather is bad, you won't be allowed to visit Dhanushkodi. I was lucky that when I visited, the weather was perfect. Road conditions:  The finest roads in India, with extremely soul-satisfying sceneries all around.

What to do in Dhanushkodi:

  • Watch the Sunrise.
  • Depending on the weather the quad bikes are also available for rent to ride alongside the beach.
  • Visit the ruins of Dhanushkodi and witness the abandoned village.
  • Click lots of photos.
  • Head back to Rameswaram and visit the Rameswaram Temple if you couldn't visit it yesterday

india trip planner bangalore

  • As mentioned before, go watch the train crossing at Pamban Bridge
  • Khushi beach is a secluded beach away from the touristy crowd, You can enjoy the view or get into the beach as well.

2 Days Bangalore Itinerary – A Perfect Plan for Sightseeing

Budget Hotels > Travel Blog > Tours & Itineraries > 2 Days Bangalore Itinerary – A Perfect Plan for Sightseeing

Famous as the Garden City and the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore is a fine blend of history, business, and leisure. The city, which had been ruled by many powers including the Vijayanagara Empire, the Wodeyars, Haider Ali, and the British, retains traces of each in the form of palaces, forts, and other historical edifices. At the same time, the cityscape is also filled with parks, pubs, restaurants, shopping streets, high-end malls, gardens, and lakes where you can chill out to your heart’s content.

If you are planning a 2-day trip to Bangalore, make sure to enjoy the best of everything that Bangalore has to offer. Here is the perfect itinerary to explore the top famous places in Bangalore in just 2 days.

Every Sunday or holiday, the building will turn on the neon lights, and the bright and beautiful lights illuminate the whole night sky.

Day 5 | Afternoon

After finishing the tour at Vidhana Soudha, you can head to Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwara Swamy Temple, the most worth visiting place around the corner.

Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwara Swamy Temple

Location: Gavipura, Kempegowda Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka

Built in the 16th century, this Shiva temple is popular with locals and rarely visited by tourists. The architecture is quite unique as it is a cave temple in itself, which feels quite novel.

Mekedatu Falls - 90 km from Bangalore

Mekedatu Falls - 90 km from Bangalore

For a one day trip around Bangalore, Mekedaatu falls are a great option to explore if waterfalls and natural scenes are up your alley. Mekedaatu, or 'goat's leap' in Kannada, is a charming location along Kaveri in the rural parts of Bangalore.

The confluence of Rivers Kaveri and Arkavati takes place at the Sangama area and 3.5 kms downstream from there, the river Kaveri flows through a very deep and narrow ravine of hard granite rock.

The river, which is more than 150 meters wide at the meeting point (at Sangama) flows through the barely 10-meter-wide gorge at Mekedatu. As per local legend, a goat being chased by a tiger managed to cross over the raging river by leaping across the gorge and saved its life in the process – thus giving rise to the name ‘goat’s leap’.

Approaching the spot, one can see the magnificent flow of all the water as it roars down the ravine. However, one must tread cautiously in this region as the rocks are deceptively slippery and the water below is deep.

The Ultimate Hampi Itinerary for 3 days in 2024 (With Free PDF)

Last Updated on May 9, 2024

This is a detailed account of our Hampi itinerary for 3 days and an equally invigorating road trip from Bangalore to Hampi. So, join us on this virtual trip to the Rome of the East as we immerse ourselves in its glorious history.

As we sailed in the Tungabhadra River, I could picture myself as one of the thousands of foreign travelers and merchants who came to Hampi in the 14th-16th century. The lively road trip from Bangalore , the grandeur of the ruins, the sunset at Tungabhadra – they will be etched in my memories forever.

So let me help you plan a Hampi trip from Bangalore , or anywhere in India for that matter.

Know nothing about Hampi? That's okay, you're in the right spot!

The sun is about to set on the banks of mighty Tungabhadra river at Hampi. The monkeys gather at the rocks and boulders strewn all around for their evening activities. A coracle ride in this river at this time of the day is the most memorable part of the Hampi itinerary

The post contains affiliate links for tours, hotels etc. This means if you make any purchase through the links in the post, I may get a commission without any additional cost to you.

Short on time? Steal this Hampi Itinerary

This is the best itinerary for a weekend trip to Hampi from Bangalore on a long weekend. Our trip was slightly different because we left late and had to leave Hampi earlier for some reason.

Well, things don't always turn out the way you planned, but it's always good to have a solid itinerary to begin with. Let's start with that here, and then we'll see how my trip with friends turned out.

Day 1: Reach Hampi

  • Start Early from Bangalore : Check-in to Hotel by 2 pm
  • Walking tour of Royal Enclosure and Danaik's Enclosure
  • Then explore the Hemkunta Group of Temples – A highlight
  • Visit Virupaksha Temple – one of the oldest living temples in India

Day 2: Explore Hampi Highlights

  • Archeological Museum : Collect the Hampi Monuments Ticket here.
  • Drive to the Vittala Temple Complex : You'll spend least 2 hours here.
  • Hippie Island for lunch and music
  • Daroji Wildlife Sanctuary : For wildlife enthusiasts, but it's optional.
  • Visit the Zenana Enclosure with the Hampi Ticket
  • Coracle Ride in Tungabhadra : A unique experience, costs around Rs.1000 for a 30-minute ride.

Day 3: Depart from Hampi

  • Drive to Anjaneya Hills and hike to the Monkey Temple
  • If you had to skip Daroji Wildlife Sanctuary on day 2, you can visit it today
  • Departure : Start for Bangalore at 2pm.

Trust me, this is not as hectic as it might sound. If you can start early, book some tours I recommend in this article, you can make the most of your trip with family.

I have skipped some adventures like bouldering in Hampi, climbing the Matange Hills and cliff-diving at Hampi. You can do it on your second trip to Hampi, or if you can extend your stay by one more day.

An introduction of Hampi – a UNESCO Heritage site

Located in Karnataka , India, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site. When you start planning your trip to Hampi, it's important to know a little bit about the history of this place.

Hampi is famous for being the capital of the great Vijayanagara empire of the 14th and 15th centuries . However, the documented history of Hampi goes back to the kingdom of Ashoka.

The region was successively ruled by many great Hindu dynasties before the Vijayanagara kingdom was formed.

With Hampi as the capital, the kings of the Vijayanagara empire controlled a major part of South India . This made possible, the booming trade relations with countries all over the world. The prosperity and greatness of this Hampi have been chronicled in many travelogues of that time.

Day 1 of 3: Bangalore to Hampi itinerary

It's ideal to leave Bangalore by 6 am so that you face less traffic and can reach Hampi by noon. However, we started late. By the time we freshened up at our hotel and had our much-needed lunch, it was almost 4 pm.

Hampi has two distinct areas separated by the beautiful Tungabhadra river – the main Hampi and the North Hampi. There is, of course, another less explored part of Hampi, which is wildlife! Yes, we will talk about it later.

The Hampi bazaar was just 2 km from our hotel, so we started with the hope of exploring them. You can easily call this part of Hampi an open-air museum. You don't need to search for sites, it's all around you.

Royal Enclosure Area |   Hampi itinerary

Hampi Itinerary and Travel Guide - Royal Enclosure

The most prominent structure here is the Mahanabami Dibba  which was used for Dushera festivities. Other significant places to see here are the  King's audience hall , a.k.a. 100-pillared hall, the Queen's bath , the Octagonal bath , the stepped tank , the public bath , and horse stables .

The royal enclosure was the seat of the emperor of the Vijayanagara kingdom and naturally the home to many significant monuments. There are over 45 structures in the Royal enclosure, or should I say ruins of the glorious structures that once existed.

We parked near the Danaik enclosure and walked straight to the Queen's bath. From there we just explored the area on foot.

I've laid out this walking map of the Royal enclosure area for you to explore the monuments. 🗺️

Queen's Bath

Queen's Bath - remnants of what used to be a private bathing pool of the royal women - Day 1 of Hampi Itinerary

Danaik's Enclosure Area   | Hampi itinerary

That's me marveling at the ruins of a great temple at Danaik Enclosure.

Danaik's enclosure or Dannanayaka enclosure is adjacent to the Royal enclosure, and an area which historians are divided on.

Some believe it to be the mint area of Hampi, some the seat of administration (Danaik meaning chief administrator), while some say it is the military training area. Most of the monuments here were completely destroyed, hence the ambiguity.

As we entered the beautiful Hazara Rama temple, a monument that has withstood the test of time; we could hear the evening azaan from the Mohammedan quarter. The Mohammedan watchtower offers a great panoramic view of the Hampi bazaar.

This place is famous for bouldering, a perfect adventure in the rocky landscape of Hampi. The weather was cloudy and pleasant, but not ideal for watching the sunset. We climbed one of the smaller rocks to watch the dramatic landscape in the evening.

Hemkunta Group of Temples

As we went past the Royal enclosure towards the Tungabhadra River, our eyes fell on the canvas of stone on our left side. It was a cluster of ancient temples on the Hemkunta hills – the Hemkanta Group of temples.

The architecture of these temples is distinct from the rest of the Hampi group of monuments. These temples were built between 9th and 14th centuries. Traces of fortifications show that this area was a protected zone during that era.

“Adda” at Tungabhadra River | Hampi itinerary for 3 days

The next stop from here normally would be Zenana Enclosure, which is just 750 meters from the Danaik's enclosure. However, we decided to visit the Tungabhadra River for a coracle ride. Unfortunately, the coracle ride closes at 6 pm, and by this time it was dark.

We sat at the banks of the river and enjoyed the serene calm, unlikely of such a tourist hot-spot. We had the quintessential Bengali “Adda” (chit-chat with friends on topics ranging from nature to politics).

That was the end of our first day at Hampi. We returned to our hotel and played cards till midnight.

We spent so much time reading all the background stories and navigating our way in Hampi.

So, I highly recommend this 2-hour guided walking tour of this historic site .

It will help optimize your time on Day 1.

Day 2 of 3: Hampi itinerary from Bangalore

Our plan for the next day was ambitious but doable. If you have just one day in Hampi, this could be your itinerary.

We decided to start the day at 9 am with a tour of the archaeological museum of Hampi. Luckily this was exactly opposite to our hotel.

Archeological Museum of Hampi

Hampi Archeological Museum

There is one Hampi ticket (costs Rs. 40/-) valid for 24 hours, which will have you covered for the Archeological Museum in Hampi and the UNESCO group of Monuments – the Vijaya Vittala Temple and the Zenana Enclosure.

The Archeological Museum is a great place to start your day as it will give you the best introduction to this Heritage site.

It was also our obvious choice as we stayed at Clarkes' Inn Hampi , right opposite to the museum. I highly recommend this mid-budget property.

The museum has a beautiful lawn with some pillars excavated from the ruins. Inside the museum, you will find a large model of the city. This will give you a solid orientation of the city and help you with planning. It would have been ideal if they had audio guides available in the museum but they don't.

All the relics are supported by sufficient information written in English, Hindi, and Kannada. Some of the notable collections here are the idols of Hindu deities and the coins of different eras from the Chalukyas to the kings of Vijayanagara.

Another interesting exhibit was the one showing the evolution of the Devanagari script.

Things to Note!

  • Entry Fee – Rs. 40, including Vijaya Vittala Complex and Zenana Enclosure Complex.
  • Open time: 10 am to 5 pm
  • Photography – Free

Vittala Temple Complex

The Stone Chariot of Vittala Temple Hampi is the highlight of 2-day Hampi Itinerary

From the museum, we drove straight to North Hampi on the other side of the Tungabhadra River.

The best alternative of driving is taking a boat from the banks of Tungabhadra to go to the other side. When you search on Google Maps, use “Vijaya Vittala temple” since there is another Vittala temple almost 100 km away from Hampi.

The Vittala Temple is the zenith of architecture in the Vijayanagara kingdom and a must-to-include place in your Hampi itinerary. From the parking area, you can either walk 1.5 km to the temple complex or you can hire a tuk-tuk.

At Rs.20 per person, the tuk-tuk takes you to the main temple complex from where you can explore the Vittala Bazaar, the temple, and the river. On your way back you just have to wait in queue for a tuk-tuk to arrive.

Me and my husband at the Vittala Temple Hampi

No matter how packed your schedule is you will have to spend at least 2 hours in the complex. The Vittala bazaar was the large market of North Hampi. A series of parallel pillars on both sides lead to the main entrance of the Vittala temple complex.

Hamp Itinerary - Gate to Vittala temples

As soon as you enter the complex you see the spectacular Stone chariot, the icon of Hampi, right in front of you. It was built out of multiple granite blocks put one over the other. The intricate carvings on the joins completely hide the crease giving an impression of a monolithic shrine.

This is where we saw the overwhelming crowd that we were (not) missing till now. People thronged upon the stone chariot waiting for their turn to take multiple photos, while we continued our way to the main hall.

We then entered the gate of the main Vittala temple. There were two temples here. One of these had the famous musical pillars, pillars that were used to create music. We spent an unexpected amount of time experimenting with our music composition skills on the pillars.

Musical pillars of Vijaya Vittala Temple

The other temple had intricate carvings depicting stories of mythology and history. The stories were inscribed in words on the wall in the Kannada language. After exploring and photographing the temples in the scorching heat we went to the riverside to relax and enjoy the breeze.

Hampi itinerary - vittala temple

After spending an hour by now we walked towards the King's balance,  followed by the other side of the Tungabhadra river. The experience was magical and I could just stay there the whole day if I had time.

Anjaneya hills and the Monkey temple

Hampi itinerary 3 days

The Anjaneya Hills holds a significant place in Hindu mythology. Believed to be the birthplace of Hanuman, a Hindu deity who helped Ram in his battle against the Ravan.

At the top of the hill stands the Hanuman temple also known as monkey temple. The flight of stairs along the hill leading to the temple is completely shaded and one has to leave their shoes behind when they visit.

Believers visit the temple to seek blessings of Lord Hanuman while nature lovers undertake the journey to see the most beautiful sunset.

We stopped by it but were too hungry to embark on this hike. Probably you'd be too. Don't worry you can come back here the next day for a hike before you depart from Hampi.

Hippie Island

Hippie Island - Hampi Itinerary

From here you can head to the Hampi island, also called Hippie island. The place earns its name owing to a large number of Goa-style shacks and the laid-back lifestyle in the region.

Most backpackers choose to stay in this part of Hampi, in small huts at a ridiculously low price. The road to Hippie island is not ideal for driving hence it is advisable to hire a tuk-tuk or a bicycle if you visit it in the evening.

The Hippie Island didn't look too special in the afternoon. Of course, there were some interesting artifacts and cool dresses on sale out there. We had lunch at one of the shacks here and headed to our next stop.

Hippie island is the favorite spot for foreign tourists. It comes alive at night when live music bars open up, and people gather for a bonfire.

Though Hampi has a good tourism infrastructure, it takes time to find your own way in the mesh.

If you are travelling with family and are not accustomed with Karnataka, I recommend a guided tour with cab service to explore Hampi .

Have your own car? Then hire a government-licensed local guide on your trip .

Daroji Wildlife Sanctuary

Daroji Bear park - Hampi itinerary

While Hampi is famous for the rocky landscape and heritage monuments, it is has a surprise hidden for wildlife lovers too.

The Daroji Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the endangered sloth bear among other species like peafowls, mongoose, etc. However, there are a few points to note before you visit-

  • There is no organized safari, the entry fee allows you to enter the forest and explore it on your own.
  • There is no jeep or car rental service here, so you need to hire a car from Hampi.
  • Entry Fee is quite expensive at Rs. 250/- per person
  • No extra fee for the car, but you are not allowed to enter the forest without a car.
  • There are no toilet or drinking water facilities here.
  • You need to climb a watchtower which is not disability-friendly.
  • Best time to see a bear is after 3 pm but you should have at least 2 hours.

Four kilometers from the main entrance lies the watchtower, where you need to park the car and climb up. This is where you are supposed to take out your binoculars and high-zoom cameras and start looking for sloth bears. The forest is dense and the black bear is difficult to spot.

We stayed there for about 30 minutes and returned without seeing a glimpse of the animal. Patience is the key to watching wildlife, that's something we learned on our six-hour Bandipur tiger safari . However, we wanted to return for the coracle-ride, hence we had to leave by 5:00 pm.

If you have only 1 day in Hampi, just skip Daroji National Park and Hippie island.

Never leave without travel health insurance. Cover your family and yourself on international trips with Visitors' Coverage .

Coracle Ride in the Tungabhadra, Hampi

Hampi Itinerary - Tungabhadra Coracle Ride

The coracle ride is one of the least advertised, yet most amazing attractions in Hampi. We parked for free near the Virupaksha temple and walked towards the Tungabhadra river like we did the previous day.

There were no signboards, so we had to keep asking locals for guidance.

Well, this is where prebooking a tour helps elevate your travel experiences. Many people skip this unforgettable adventure simply because they are lost and return frustrated.

Prebook this guided Tungabhadra tour online before you leave for Hampi . It includes a guided walking tour plus coracle ride at less tha Rs. 850!

Well, we didn't plan it out so well that time, but luckily, we managed.

We walked into a cave that descended into the Tungabhadra basin. This is where the round-shaped boats were waiting to take us on a memorable tour.

You need to haggle here. Unless you have a prebooked tour, the locals quote prices on the basis of demand. The four of us could negotiate a 30-minute coracle ride at Rs.1000 in total.

The sailor showed us some of the floating temples and precarious rocks on both sides of the river.

Hampi Itinerary - Tungabhadra river Coracle Ride

The tour ended with few rounds of spinning in the river. I must say it was a thousand bucks well-spent.

Check out more pictures on my Photo Story of Hampi .

Virupaksha Temple

Our last stop of the day was the Virupaksha temple, one of the oldest active temples in India. It was created in the 7th century, after which it was enhanced during the Chalukya era and followed by the Vijayanagara era.

The intricate carvings on the well-maintained temple make it difficult to believe that it is so old. This grand shrine is a must-visit place in Hampi and one of the monuments that were awarded the status of UNESCO world heritage site. Unlike many active shrines, there is no specific dress code for entering the temple.

india trip planner bangalore

The temple is also famous for a small slit in the wall which exhibits a pin-hole camera effect in the day. When the sunrays pass through it creating an inverted image of the main tower.

Day 3 of 3: Hampi trip from Bangalore

The last day we checked out of the hotel at 9:15 am. We wanted to visit the Zenana enclosure before we set off on our way back through route 2.

Zenana enclosure

The name Zenana suggests that it was a secluded area for royal women, a harem. The most notable structure here is the Lotus Mahal . It looks refreshingly different from the usual architecture of the Hampi group of monuments. This used to be the social hangout area for the royal ladies. Unlike most other monuments of Hampi, it is made of limestone and bricks.

Lotus Mahal at Zenana Enclosure

The Zenana enclosure, unlike the other to “enclosures” we visited before, is indeed enclosed by high walls. The area within is well maintained with lawns and large trees and a map of the area to help you out. Unlike the Royal enclosure, there are security officers here, probably the reason why we didn't notice the acts of vandalism by tourists that we saw in the former.

Some of the other prominent structures here are the basement of the queen's palace , the guard's quarter and the beautiful elephant stables . The design of the elephant stables strangely sync with the lotus temple.

Many archaeologists differ from the view that the Zenana enclosure was a harem at all. The proximity to elephant stable and guard's quarter, according to them suggests that this area was used for military purposes.

The proponents of the harem theory claim that the guards' quarter was for the eunuch guards to protect the royal women.

Hampi Itinerary - Elephant Stable

Elephant Stable in Zenana Enclosure, Hampi  The basement of Queen's Palace

We had to pay Rs.40 entrance ticket again since our previous ticket was valid for just 1 day. However, we didn't mind because just the Zenana enclosure alone was worth the money spent.

Hampi is not just an outstanding must-visit place in India, it is one of the cheapest places to explore.

The only exception is probably the Daroji wildlife sanctuary, which didn't really justify the value of the entrance fee. We departed for Hampi with the hope of returning soon.

How to reach from Bangalore to Hampi?

Hampi is just 350 km from Bangalore, and you can reach via train, bus or by car. The train is the most preferred means because they are cheap and comfortable. However, given the high demand, the trains in India need to be booked in advance.

Buses are easier to book because of their availability. There are a number of private Volvo buses that you can book from Bangalore to Hampi within the budget range of Rs. 500 -Rs.800.

Search and book bus, train or taxi from Bangalore to Hampi here .

Bangalore to Hampi drive

Driving Route for Bangalore to Hampi Road Trip:

This was our choice of conveyance from Bangalore to Hampi. We started late, at around 8:00 am from our home. There are two driving routes from Bangalore to Hampi. The shortest one is via NH 48 (345 km) and the slightly longer one is via the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway (365 km).

We took the shortest route on our way to Hampi and the second route back. I think the second (longer) route is much better for driving. The best thing is that you can stop at Veerabhadra temple of Lepakshi in the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway route. It is also another wonder of the Vijayanagar era.

Where to stay in Hampi?

There is a plethora of options to stay in Hampi, a backpacker's paradise. There are guesthouses in Hippie Island at economical rates. I would recommend staying in the Hampi town, close to the Hampi Bazaar, where you can see most of the heritage group of monuments.

We stayed at Clarks Inn Hampi . At around Rs.2500 per night including breakfast we got an indoor swimming pool, gym, play zone, and amazing interiors.

My Top Picks

For big groups, book Iconic Hampi Homes , where up to 4 people can stay in one room.

For family-friendly government-owned property in city-center, book KSTDC Hotel Mayura

My favorite Clarke's Inn for affordable luxury – indoor pool, Play Zone for children and good food

For package tours, I recommend Bangalore to Hampi all-inclusive 2-day tour and Goa to Hampi Package tour .

Before moving onto the FAQ section, I'd like to share the list of my favorite travel sites for travelling in India

How many days are enough for Hampi?

You can explore the best of Hampi in three days. If you are short on time you can still condense it into a 2-day, 1-night itinerary.

However, Hampi is also an amazing place for slow travel. Many travelers come and stay here for weeks and months enjoying the slow life, bouldering, swimming and exploring the nearby heritage sites like Badami and Aihole.

What is the best time to visit Hampi?

Hampi is usually hot and dry almost throughout the year. Despite that tourist of all kind throng to Hampi for everything it has to offer.

However, according to me the best time to visit Hampi is in the monsoon when the light showers bring down the temperature. In fact, it is one of the best places to visit in monsoon in India.

How safe is Hampi for solo women travelers?

I found Hampi very safe for women, just like most of Karnataka. Some places near Tungabhadra are quite desolate. I would advise exercising the minimum caution that you would do anywhere else.

What to wear in Hampi?

I have seen women in shorts and tank-tops and saris alike. There are not many restrictions on what to wear even inside the temples. Although I prefer comfortable traditional attires that suits the nature of the place.

Wear good shoes for adventure activities. Check out the best travel shoes for India.

So, are you excited to visit Hampi? I hope my post helps you make the best of your Hampi trip plan. If you liked it please share the post.

I really enjoyed reading about Hamp, it looks like an open museum with all the temples and incredible structures. I had the chance to visit it in several occasions while I was in India but something always came up. When I come back to India, Hampi is definitely on the top of my list. I saw some amazing photos of the panoramic view of the Bazaar and it looked magical! I would love to experience this someday.

Visiting Archeological museums are one of my favourite thing to do while travelling so I feel like I would really love Hampi! I also love those Temples on your photos! They look so beautiful! Such a perfect place with so much to do! I cant wait to visit India one day!

I was not familiar with Hampi until I read your post. I love touring historical sites when I travel, so I know I would enjoy seeing and learning all about Hampi and the surrounding area. The name Hippie Island gave me a chuckle.

I really enjoyed your article and photos. The Queens Palace is impressive. The road trip would be a definite challenge depending which way you travelled. All roads in India seem to be like this, that makes it more of a fun adventure.

The roads in south India are usually very good, except these small challenges. That’s why I described the alternate route through Lepakshi. That will be a safe and amazing drive.

What a fascinating place. To know that the craton exists due to changes from volcanic movements from tens of millions of years ago is hard for the mere mortal to really comprehend. The history behind this place is amazing and the museums, temples and ruins looks beautiful. Those rows and rows of columns that ends with the temple is gorgeous and reminds me so much of Angkor.

Hampi is a place that we are in love with. Even three visits have not satiated our appetite to soak in the history. We look forward to getting there again at the earliest. I like your term for Hampi, “3-D History Book”, it is so apt.

I’ve not managed to visit Bangalore but your itinerary looks great. Virupaksha Temple looks like a nice temple to visit. Sounds like this would be a great trip!

When I lived in Bengaluru for more than 7 years, never I had visited this beautiful UNESCO-listed place. Now I have made sure when I go to the South, I would surely have to visit Hampi. It is indeed an 3D-history book. I find a strong similarity of this kingdom complex with Angkor. The ruins look magnificent. I was amazed by the Queens Palace – such rich architecture and history. Appreciate your pictures more than anything.

Thanks Shreya! Hope you visit Hampi soon on your trip to south india

Wow that is some incredible history there. I love how even looking at the photos some of the places look so incredibly large and full of life. My favorite places to visit are definitely temples, you guys found some great ruins to check out.

Hampi was one of my favorite places in India, indeed a 3d history. I enjoyed the calm river, the bazar and the baths ruins were impressive. I wish to come back one day and roam between the temples. ANd so many monkeys there! I wold definately take more days there the next time.

That was such an interesting post on visiting Hampi. I really enjoyed reading about this place, as I’ve not yet been to India. I love that there’s clearly many things to do here, from seeing the magnificent temples, to seeing the wildlife sanctuary too. I love the sound of Hippie Island, I bet it’s vibrant there at nighttime!

I’ve heard so much about Hampi and it’s temples and architectures, so this is already on my bucket list. What I appreciate is that you included some other activities that help visitors understand the culture and historical significance these landmarks have. That I think is very important for when we travel. I think I just might have to head to Hippie Island and see what that nightlife is all about, ha!

Haven’t been to Hampi yet, but after reading this detailed blog, I so want to. Many of my friends have been there and have heard some interesting stories, and seen some visually appealing photos. Looks like a trip to Hampi is soon on the cards now.

I still remember my trip to Hampi last year and how I was blown away with so many boulders and rocks and the vast paddy fields. We explored all the ruins and temples on a bicycle and it was a lot of fun. I loved your detailed post on this town and the way you have covered everything from how to reach to what places to visit.

Thank you so much. Hampi has definitely left a deep impression in my mind

Wow Sinjana! I’m loving Hampi with your pictures and narration! I’d love to visit all the sites the famous chariot, Vittala Temple Complex, janaza, lake, activities, and the monkey temple 🙂 This is such a comprehensive post, I’m going to keep it bookmarked and pinned for reference.

Thank you so much Jyoti. I would definitely recommend this trip when you are in India

This is a really good guide to a really rich historical site. Hopefully the archaeologists can uncover enough and maybe virtually reconstruct the buildings. An empire that prosperous from a stoneworking culture must have had incredible structures. This kingdom would have coincided with India’s early Hindu influence in Southeast Asia.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. Hampi is believed to have been the second largest city in the world at that time and one of the wealthiest kingdoms! If not restoration I think a little more security to prevent vandalism by the irresponsible tourists who think it’s cool to carve their own names in all monuments would go a long way.

I’ve yet to make it to Hempi too. It does look fascinating! Hopefully, I’ll get there one day. I’ve been to India three times, each time to a different area. Each one unique and each one fabulous!

I know about your love for traveling in India so I’m sure you will visit again. Hampi is one of the most underrated gems and is highly accessible from major cities in south

I want to to thank you for this good read!! I absolutely enjoyed every little bit of it. I have you book marked to check out new stuff you post…

India is so high on my Bucketlist and I read blog posts like yours and just want to buy my flight! You have some really great information. I will for sure be adding Hampi to my list for when I visit!

Thanks Caro. It’s indeed the most interesting country to explore.

Your Hampi Itinerary is awesome. PS – Your photos alone make me want to visit.

Thanks Brett.

What an incredible place! And I loved all the details you included from the rather steep speed-bumps through to the photography options. The Queen’s Bath is magnificent; I can imagine it deep with water and with the women gathered to chat and bathe. I’d certainly be wanting to try a tune on those musical pillars.

Thanks a lot. You will thoroughly enjoy Hampi.

Wow- lots of history and architecture here. Our boys love both- so this would be an awesome place for us to visit with them!

What a fantastic 3-day itinerary. There’s certainly many things to see and explore and for anyone visiting Hampi, this itinerary gives them a great idea on what to do and when. The temples and buildings look stunning, certainly a sight to see with your own eyes I’d say.

Thanks a lot. You will love Hampi.

I’ve never heard of Hampi before, but will definitely put it on my bucket list for when I’m visiting India – which will hopefully be soon. I was especially intrigued by the Vittala Temple Complex – so majestic!

Thanks Renata. You will totally love Hampi.

I have been wanting to visit Hampi for so long. This is such a beautiful and culturally rich place. Thanks for sharing such detailed information about it.

Thanks Karthika. You should definitely visit Hampi now.

Oh wow, I love all the old ruins! So beautiful!

Looks like an incredible area and this itinerary is perfect! The wildlife and historic temples are just stunning!

Valparai, nestled in the lush Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, is a serene hill station known for its scenic landscapes, tea estates and rich biodiversity. Whether you are planning for a relaxed holiday or an adventurous one, there are some important details you need to keep in mind to make your first visit to Valparai memorable and enjoyable.

1. Understanding Valparai's Location and Weather

Located in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, Valparai is around 3,500 feet above sea level. The weather here is pleasantly cool all year round so it serves as an escape from the scorching plains. But monsoons (June to September) bring heavy rainfalls hence plan your visit during this time to enjoy a green environment.

2. Best Time to Visit

india trip planner bangalore

The best time to visit Valparai would be from October-March as the weather would be cool and pleasant then. During this period, there will be clear skies with comfortable temperatures that are ideal for sightseeing and other outdoor activities like trekking as well as wildlife viewing.

3. Getting There

Valparai is conveniently connected by road from major cities such as Coimbatore (105 km), Pollachi (65 km) and Kochi (150 km). The nearest airport is Coimbatore International Airport; buses and taxis run regularly between Coimbatore and Pollachi to Valparai. The road leading up to Valparai is scenic but involves steep hairpin bends so those prone to motion sickness should come prepared.

4. Accommodation Options

Budget guesthouses can be found side by side with luxury resorts located among tea estates in Valparai. Therefore, it would be wise if you book your stay ahead particularly during peak tourist season so that you can secure availability plus have great views of surrounding hills and forests.

5. Exploring Tea Estates

Valparai is famous for endless tea estates that stretch out as far as the eye can see. Visit any of the tea factories on guided tours to learn how tea is made from leaves to cups. Don't forget the opportunity of tasting freshly brewed tea in between beautiful plantations.

Visiting Valparai promises a rejuvenating experience amidst nature's beauty and tranquility. The charm of Valparai will captivate any person whether he/she is interested in natural landscapes, looking for adventures or searching for peace and quietness. Plan your itinerary well, be eco-friendly and dive yourselves into natural wonders of this offbeat jewel of Tamil Nadu. Valparai offers a perfect blend of scenic beauty, cultural richness, and outdoor adventure, making it an ideal destination for your next getaway. Plan ahead; pack smartly because time waits for no one in this unspoiled hill station.
