Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Clad in white marble, the beautiful and absolutely mammoth Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is Abu Dhabi's landmark building and by far the most popular sightseeing attraction in the city.

The mosque fuses Mameluke, Ottoman, and Fatimid design elements to create a harmonious and thoroughly modern mosque that celebrates Islamic architecture.

Artisans used glasswork, mosaic tiling, and intricate carvings to spectacular effect on both the interior and exterior.

It was opened in 2007 after nearly 20 years of construction. Able to hold 40,000 worshippers, it is the biggest mosque in the United Arab Emirates, and like the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Fujairah (the UAE's second biggest mosque), it is dedicated to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan.

Non-Muslims are allowed into all areas of the mosque (including the vast library), and the mosque runs regular free guided tours

The Abu Dhabi City Tour is a good way to get acquainted with the city. This five-hour tour visits the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the Etihad Tower observation deck with a guide. Transport and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

View of the Louvre Abu Dhabi

The Middle East's most spectacular museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi traces the entire history of humanity's artistic achievements, from the Neolithic right up to the current day.

The wealth and diversity of art on display, from ancient Egyptian statuary to famous paintings by Picasso, is mind-boggling, while the museum's contemporary architecture, with its galleries gathered under a vast silver dome, is a reason to visit in itself.

As well as the permanent collection, which runs over 12 galleries, several major temporary exhibitions are staged each year.

The Louvre is the first of three planned major museums to open on Saadiyat Island, which is set to become the cultural heartbeat of Abu Dhabi in the coming years.

The other two - Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum - are still in the planning phases.

Hammocks on Saadiyat Island beach

Saadiyat Island is one of Abu Dhabi's top sun-seeker destinations.

Saadiyat Beach is a long strip of white sand on the island's western shore, with a small admission fee for beachgoers. It has excellent facilities, including on-duty lifeguards, a café for refreshments, and plenty of sun loungers and shades.

For active sun-seekers, you can rent kayaks and windsurfing equipment on the beach.

The beach is backed by a rim of protected dunes where hawksbill turtles nest. Access to the beach is on a raised wooden boardwalk so that this area is not disturbed.

Qasr Al Watan

Recently opened to the public, Qasr Al Watan (the UAE's Presidential Palace) has quickly become a must-do on Abu Dhabi itineraries for anyone interested in digging deeper into the culture, history, and architecture of the UAE.

The grandiose interiors of the state rooms, including the Great Hall and Presidential Banqueting Hall, with their crystal chandeliers, domes, arches, vast amounts of marble, and intricate mosaic and muqarna (ornamental vaulting) detailing, is enough of a reason to visit.

For those with a historic bent, the House of Knowledge exhibit space offers a thorough and well-curated collection that covers the Arab world's prominent role in the history of modern science, literature, and art. A separate exhibit within Qasr Al Watan displays diplomatic gifts given by world leaders to the UAE.

Qasr Al Watan's library is a working public library with an impressive collection of books and periodicals, research articles, and rare manuscripts, all focused on the UAE's history, heritage, culture, social and political developments, and geography. Although most important as a research focus point for the local community and scholars, casual visitors touring the palace are welcome to visit.

Guided tours are available, as well as audio guides if you prefer to tour independently.

After dark, the palace exterior is lit up in a short sound and light show that whizzes through UAE history.

Liwa Oasis

The most popular day trip or overnight trip from Abu Dhabi city is a desert safari to the south of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, either to the beautiful Liwa Oasis, which lays right on the edge of the Empty Quarter, or to the Al Khatim Desert near Al Ain .

The Empty Quarter desert contains the largest sand dunes in the world, and the dunes of both areas are a fantastic playground for anyone who wants to ride dune buggies, try sandboarding, go camel trekking, or simply soak up the vast star-strewn desert sky after dark at a desert camp.

Most trips include stops to visit a camel farm and offer a taste of traditional desert life, as well as heading into the dunes themselves.

The Evening Desert Safari is a great option for visitors with only a short time to spare, offering a six-hour tour into the emirate's desert environs. Visitors are taken on a 4x4 tour of the dunescape before settling down for dinner at a desert camp, with traditional tannura and belly dancing entertainment provided. Once at camp, guests can choose from a host of complimentary activities, such as sand-boarding and camel rides. All transport, with pickup and drop-off from Abu Dhabi hotels, and food is included.

Gazelles on Sir Bani Yas Island

One of the best short breaks from Abu Dhabi city is to the wildlife reserve of Sir Bani Yas Island, first established by Sheikh Zayed.

Indigenous Arabian wildlife such as gazelles and the endangered Arabian Oryx plus introduced animals, including giraffes and leopards, free roam within the vast reserve, which covers the interior of Sir Bani Yas Island.

The luxury resort here offers guests a variety of activities, including 4x4 safaris, walking safaris, and horse-riding tours to view wildlife within the reserve, as well as other activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking.

The island is accessed by boat (booked through the resort) from Jebel Dhanna, 260 kilometers west of the city.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is a working veterinary hospital for ill and injured falcons, but it also provides guided tours of its facilities for interested visitors.

The tours allow you to get up close and personal with these birds of prey in the wards, while an on-site museum explains the history of falconry.

Guided tours of the hospital (which must be pre-booked) are held twice daily Monday to Thursday and once daily Friday and Sunday and are one of the few opportunities a visitor has in Abu Dhabi to connect with traditional Emirati heritage.

If you're up for the challenge, you may also have the chance to hold one of the birds, or even to feed one, depending on the activities the vets are performing at the time of your visit.

Heritage Village

Abu Dhabi's Heritage Village is an authentic replica of a typical Bedouin village that gives visitors an idea of Emirati life before the oil boom.

It's located in a pretty beach area of the city, which is a pleasant place to wander after a visit.

There are exhibits featuring traditional day-to-day objects, workshops where you can watch craftspeople demonstrate Emirati metalwork and weaving skills, and displays introducing visitors to local agriculture and the pearl diving trade-the main economies here before oil was discovered.

The heritage village is a bit rundown these days, but it remains one of the few places in the city where traditional Emirati life can be explored.

Budget Hotels:

  • Budget accommodation is difficult to find in Abu Dhabi, but many mid-range hotels offer steep discounts - especially during low season. If you're watching your wallet, the Novel Hotel City Center offers excellent value in the heart of the city, just a few minutes' stroll from the Corniche. There's a pool and gym and neutral-toned rooms.
  • Also in the city center, the Al Diar Dana is a popular budget option with rooms that come with kitchenettes.

Each offers residents and tourists alike a luxurious getaway only minutes from the city. You’ll find each has multiple pools, kids clubs, and dining on offer and, of course, direct access to the stunning beach.

More Island Hopping

If you’re looking for a real desert island getaway with a boat ride included in the price, two daycation or staycation options near the city that you could consider are:

  • Al Maya Island is a good family choice because of its large pool and dining options.
  • Nurai Island Resort – a pricey paradise, perfect for a special occasion.

An overnight glamping experience at Starlight Camp, located on a fully private island just 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi, might also be something that you could look into. For more details, click here

Whilst most visitors to Abu Dhabi stay within the city, there are plentiful places to visit in the rest of Abu Dhabi Emirate. From magnificent sand dunes to stunning desert islands, Abu Dhabi really has it all.

Use this map to guide your way across the Emirates, though note there are multiple locations for some attractions

An Abu Dhabi Desert Safari

The easiest way to get out into the desert is to take a desert safari from your city hotel. Such safaris take you to a nice spot of dunes, where you can experience a variety of activities, including sand surfing and dune bashing. There is often an Arabic-style barbecue and entertainment in the form of belly dancers, a tanoura dancer, or an oud player. The experience usually lasts 5 or 6 hours in total.

To learn about some of the best Abu Dhabi desert safaris click here.

Anyone seeking to spend longer in the desert could consider one of the following options:

Arabian Nights Village

A charming desert retreat. It is possible to visit the village for the evening or stay overnight. Overnight visitors can choose from 3 different styles of accommodation. In addition to accommodation, overnight guests benefit from using the swimming pool and breakfast. Staying overnight is a real treat, and waking up in the desert is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Learn more here about booking your visit to Arabian Nights Village

Qasr al Sarab

The ultimate in desert luxury; this is arguably the best hotel resort in the country. Sitting around a 2-hour drive from the city, the sprawling ‘Palace of the Mirage’ is a truly welcome site in the expanse of golden dunes that surround it. From the shimmering sand-swept entrance, you are transported to another world.

Check pricing on booking.com here .

Tilal Liwa – Madinat Zayed

Located just beyond the western region city of Madinat Zayed.  There’s not a great deal to see and do for most family visitors around Madinat Zayed, outside of the Al Dhafra Festival in the winter.  However, Tilal Liwa provides a 4-star alternative to the more expensive desert resorts. Enjoy the pool and outdoor desert sports.

Tilal Liwa Resort in the Liwa Desert

Sir Bani Yas Island

Offering an altogether very different desert island experience, Sir Bani Yas is, in fact, a nature reserve filled with many endangered species from the Arabian peninsula and beyond.

Guests can stay at the Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa , or there are two villa accommodation options, one directly on the beach and the other a little further inland.

For more information on what to expect on Sir Bani Yas Island, click here

The ancestral home of the Bani Yas people and a long-time favourite location for those with 4x4s wanting to take on the epic dunes. Much infrastructure and development has been happening in recent years to make this small desert village into a tourist attraction of its own.

bab al najoum private villas

Exploring deep into the desert is naturally the number one attraction, but you can now explore the beauty of this remote spot deep in the Empty Quarter from the luxury of your own villa with the opening of Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa .

You can find our complete guide to the Abu Dhabi desert – for family retreats and couples-only luxury getaways here.

Al Quaa Milky Way Spot

Famous for being the best star-gazing spot in the UAE, unfortunately, it’s one of those places that’s become a bit of a victim of its own popularity; on new moon nights, you’d be mistaken for thinking it was the E11 with the amount of cars and light pollution.

Your only true way to explore this location properly is to find a guide who can take you much deeper into the dunes. For this, we’d recommend Arabian Wanderers . They offer both family tours and adult-only tour groups for an overnight adventure at each new moon (they’ll take care of all your camping gear as well as hotel pickups if required.)

If camping doesn’t take your fancy with all the sand, you can also check out these glamping options – a few in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. Alternatively, another desert resort option to consider close to Al Ain is Telal Resort (not to be confused with Tilal Liwa – though note it’s closed for renovations in the summer of 2024).

If you are yet to explore the Oasis City, get this one on your bucket list for this winter!

Most families in Abu Dhabi have probably made it to the Al Ain Zoo at some point – if you’ve not been in a while definitely worth a re-visit as they’re making improvements all the time. The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is also one of the best educational displays you’ll find in the UAE. The tickets still remain amazingly good value!

Elsewhere in Al Ain, you may want to include on your sightseeing list:

  • Take a stroll through the historic Al Ain Oasis and hunt out the other UNESCO World Heritage Sites spotted across the city, including Hili Archaelogical Park.
  • Make the mountain drive up to Jebel Hafeet and enjoy far-reaching views of the UAE and Oman.
  • Visit the Jebel Hafeet Desert Park and explore the 5000-year-old beehive tombs and stay in the unique bubble dome tents.
  • Explore the many museums of Al Ain, including the Palace Museum , Qasr al Muwaiji & Al Jahili Fort .
  • Drive through the Al Ain Camel Market – the only one of its kind left in the UAE! And experience the local hum of the city with an evening at Souq Al Qattara in the winter (Thursday to Saturday).

al ain camel market interesting place to visit in the emirates for a cultural experience

You can find our full family guide to things to do in Al Ain here, and if you’re making a weekend of it, our favourite family resorts in Al Ain .

On the way to Al Ain, you will pass through the area of Al Wathba , home to several interesting natural sites. These include:

  • The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve – Open only during the cooler months, the wetland reserve provides a home for 250 species of bird, including the Greater Flamingo, 37 plants species and a diverse range of aquatic life.
  • The Al Wathba Salt Lake – Azure waters and salty white mounds make this a very photogenic spot.
  • The Fossil Dunes – Impressive rock formations carved by the desert winds.

NB – these Al Wathba sites aren’t always open to the public as work to put proper tourism infrastructure in place while preserving the natural beauty and natural ecosystems is ongoing.

12 Best Things To Do in Abu Dhabi

Updated Feb. 11, 2021

Abu Dhabi boasts a fair number of expansive shopping centers (such as the Marina Mall ) and luxury attractions (like Ferrari World ). But the UAE's largest emirate is also an excellent place to learn more about the nation's traditions. Spend your days

  • All Things To Do

abu dhabi tourist locations

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque free

Constructed between 1996 and 2007 at the request of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is by far the most popular of Abu Dhabi's sights, and it's easy to see why. One of the largest mosques in the world, this house of worship features 82 domes, more than 1,000 columns and a white and gold facade. What's more, this is one of only two mosques in the UAE open to non-Muslim tourists. That means that visitors from all around the globe can walk across the world's largest hand-woven rug, gaze up at one of the world's largest chandeliers and admire the fusion of Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman architectural styles, representing three different Islamic dynasties.

Although it's not Abu Dhabi's oldest attraction, those who have visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque say that a stop here is a must for those who want a better understanding of the city's religious identity. The site is one of the world's most significant examples of contemporary Islamic architecture. You are welcome to explore the mosque on your own, but many travelers recommend tagging along on one of the free guided tours; tours take between 45 minutes and an hour and can be reserved in advance, or you can simply show up and wait for the next scheduled English tour. "Our guide was outstanding; no religion, just amazing facts and with his commentary we understood the incredible engineering, art [and] workmanship that make this so very special," according to one TripAdvisor user. Previous visitors highly recommend touring the mosque in the evening when the sunset reflects off the marble courtyard.

The Corniche The Corniche free

Stretching nearly 5 miles along the coast of Dhow Harbour — from the Heritage Park to the northeast to Emirates Palace in the southwest — the Corniche makes up the horizontal part of Abu Dhabi city's "T" shape. This seaside promenade is lined with some of the city's most popular hotels, not to mention a variety of restaurants and shops. According to recent visitors, The Corniche offers extensive views of the Persian Gulf and the city skyline. "If you can, rent a bicycle," one TripAdvisor user advised. "It's […] a bit too long for a walk, but just right for a bicycle ride." You'll find several rental shops where you can pick up a set of wheels: FunRideSports has five stations along the Corniche where you can pick up a bike starting at 30 AED (around $8 USD) per hour.

But for most travelers, the main reason to visit the Corniche is to take advantage of its access to the city's beaches. Boasting volleyball nets, free concerts, ice cream shops and calm waters, Corniche Beach (located on the southwestern section of the promenade with the main entrance near the Hilton hotel) offers a family-friendly atmosphere, though you'll need to pay 10 AED (about $3 USD) to access the sands. Meanwhile, the city recently opened a public beach closer to the northern end of the Corniche: Known as the Western Extension, this mile of shoreline is free to access and features both swimming and water sports areas.

Emirates Palace Emirates Palace free

Like the Burj Al Arab in Dubai , Emirates Palace sets the standard for luxury lodging in Abu Dhabi. This sprawling resort says its goes "beyond 5-star luxury" for its clientele — who are oftentimes visiting royals and dignitaries. But you don't have to be a guest to experience what all the fuss is about. This resort — which occupies nearly 250 acres of coastline along the Corniche and stretches more than half a mile from wing to wing — has become one of Abu Dhabi city's most recognizable landmarks. Emirates Palace looks almost like a cross between the Taj Mahal and a fairy tale castle: The structure features more than 100 domes, the insides of which are decorated with gold, crystals and mother of pearl. More than 1,000 chandeliers and rich handmade carpets add to the interior's opulence, while outside the hotel, palm trees, lush gardens and bubbling fountains create an oasis effect.

Non-guests are welcome to enjoy a traditional hammam (Turkish bath) experience or a skin treatment at the Anantara Spa or grab a bite to eat at one of the hotel's nine restaurants. But most visitors were content simply wandering the grounds. One TripAdvisor user described Emirates Palace as "beautiful inside and out," adding, "I would recommend dressing nicely, to not feel out of place. It gives you a view of how 'the other half' lives." Some recent visitors recommend stopping in for afternoon tea, while others say that an evening visit is the way to go so that you can see the hotel all lit up.

Abu Dhabi Desert Tours Abu Dhabi Desert Tours

Surrounding the Liwa Oasis in the western part of the emirate is the Al Gharbia region, home to the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter). As the largest uninterrupted sand mass in the world, the Empty Quarter provides the perfect backdrop for a variety of desert excursions. Whether you'd prefer a more traditional camel trek or a wild dune buggy ride (often known as "dune-bashing"), a safari-style jeep ride or a birds-eye balloon tour, you'll find plenty of ways to explore the Arabian desert. A number of companies offer organized tours of the Empty Quarter; some of the more reputable options are Arabian Adventures , Emirates Tours , Abu Dhabi Adventure Tours and Abu Dhabi Desert Safari . Tours can be booked through the companies' websites, and the earlier you try to make reservations, the more likely it is that there will be availability.

Many recent Abu Dhabi visitors say that their desert tour was one of the highlights of their trip. According to one TripAdvisor user (who booked through Abu Dhabi Desert Safari), "[The] Dune-bashing part was the most exhilarating thing I've ever done on vacation. […] Just don't eat a few hours before. It's intense." Tour prices will depend on the company and the type of tour you choose. For more information and ideas on planning your desert excursion, visit the Abu Dhabi tourism board website .

Jebel Hafeet & The Al Ain Camel Souk Jebel Hafeet & The Al Ain Camel Souk free

Rising more than 4,000 feet out of the desert and straddling the UAE-Oman border about 15 miles south of Al Ain, Jebel Hafeet stands as the tallest mountain in the emirate and the second-tallest mountain in the country. This mountain has played a significant role in Emirati history: Not only have several notable fossil discoveries been made here, but archaeologists have also unearthed more than 500 ancient burial sites in the Jebel Hafeet foothills. Yet most travelers don't plan a trip to this mountain because they're interested in history; rather, Jebel Hafeet offers what many road trip enthusiasts (including Edmunds.com and The Weather Channel) have deemed one of the best driving roads in the world. The road weaves its way through the mountain's limestone up to the summit, where you'll find the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet hotel, as well as beautiful views of Al Ain and neighboring Oman. Many recent travelers recommend making the drive late in the afternoon to enjoy the sunset from the mountaintop.

If you have some extra time after your drive, consider making a stop at the Al Ain Camel Souk, located southeast of Jebel Hafeet (less than a 20 mile drive from the summit) near the Oman border in Meyzad. The last traditional camel market in the UAE, this lively market will allow you to get up close and personal with the iconic "ships of the desert" and experience the camel trade as it has operated for centuries. Those who have visited say that they enjoyed their visit, though a few travelers note that the locals have been known to ask for money in return for photos of the camels. Also, be mindful of how you dress for your visit. "The camel souq is an all male and quite conservative place. Modest clothing for both men and women is a must," one TripAdvisor user advised, adding "I would also recommend easy-to-clean footwear."

Al Jahili Fort Al Jahili Fort free

Sitting about a block west of the Palace Museum is the striking Al Jahili Fort. Built in the late 1800s, Al Jahili is the largest edifice in Al Ain made from mud bricks (a traditional form of Arabian architecture), and it has recently been refurbished for public visitation. The structure was erected as the headquarters of the Oman Trucial Scouts, a group tasked with the protection of the region's palm groves and the preservation of peace between the different tribes that once occupied the area. Today, visitors are welcome to explore the fort's battlements and watchtowers, which surround an expansive courtyard that often acts as a backdrop for outdoor concerts. Al Jahili also houses a small exhibit dedicated to British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger (fondly known in the UAE as "Mubarak Bin London), who is known for his journeys across the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert .

Travelers who have spent time at Al Jahili say that the fort provides an interesting peek at the area's history while offering plenty of photo opportunities. Recent visitors are especially impressed with the Thesiger exhibit. According to one TripAdvisor user, "The exhibition of Wilfred Thesiger's photos as he lived amongst the Bedouin prior to oil discovery show a great insight into the history of this country."

Marina Mall Marina Mall free

The United Arab Emirates are a shopper's paradise: This wealthy country has no shortage of traditional souks (marketplaces) and high-end megamalls, with the Marina Mall being one of Abu Dhabi's most popular shopping venues. Located near Heritage Village on the Breakwater in the southwest corner of Abu Dhabi city, this immense shopping complex houses more than 400 stores, as well as a bowling alley, a movie theater, an ice rink and an amusement center complete with arcade games and rides. You'll also find a variety of restaurants and cafes in addition to a sprawling food court.

Recent travelers love the variety of shops and eateries found here, but several visitors say that the Marina Mall's observation deck was the highlight of their visit. Because of its location, the mall offers panoramas of the Persian Gulf, the Corniche and Emirates Palace . "I would recommend going around sunset to see a pretty spectacular view," one TripAdvisor user advised.

abu dhabi tourist locations

Al Ain Oasis Al Ain Oasis free

When the blazing Arabian heat starts to take its toll, you can find respite at the Al Ain Oasis. Occupying nearly 3,000 acres of central Al Ain, this quiet park is best known for its date palms — nearly 150,000 of them. These towering trees are part of plantations (some of them privately owned) that still help supply Abu Dhabi with the popular regional snack. Meanwhile, you'll have a chance to witness the ancient irrigation tactic known as " falaj ," which is still used to water the mango, orange, banana and fig trees. While you walk around, keep your eyes open for the remains of an old mosque and fortification, and keep your camera primed to capture the stark contrast between the verdant oasis and the dry desert.

Recent visitors describe the oasis as a nice place to explore, though some travelers note that finding your way around can be a challenge. "The guard said there is a spring worth seeing but [I] almost got lost inside and could not find anyone to ask for directions," one TripAdvisor user recalled.

Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum free

Sitting on the western edge of the Al Ain Oasis , the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum (also known as the Al Ain Palace Museum) offers visitors a glimpse of what life was like for the UAE's founder and first president. Built in 1910, this large complex housed Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his family while he was in power. Visitors to the museum can learn more about the "Father of the Nation" as they wander through the palace's courtyards, gardens and sleeping quarters. You'll also have to opportunity to peek into the meeting rooms where Sheikh Zayed met with visiting dignitaries and other guests.

Those who have visited the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum say that a self-guided tour takes roughly an hour and that it's worth seeing if you make it to Al Ain. Travelers describe the palace as a beautiful, but one TripAdvisor user felt that the museum was lacking when it came to information: "There is a map, but no booklets for foreign visitors, which I think would be of benefit."

abu dhabi tourist locations

Heritage Village Heritage Village free

Although Abu Dhabi is constantly evolving, remnants of the UAE's heritage are easy to find. If you're interested in learning more about Abu Dhabi's roots, consider a visit to Heritage Village. Set across the Dhow Harbour from the Corniche , Heritage Village is a representation of the original fishing village that once stood here. While touring this living museum, you'll stroll past Bedouin tents and wooden huts housing workshops where you can watch weaving and metal-working demonstrations. The facility also features a restaurant and several shops where you can pick up local crafts and spices.

Travelers agree that Heritage Village offers an interesting peek at Abu Dhabi's history and appreciate that the attraction doesn't charge admission. "You can […] get an idea of how life used to be in the Emirates," one TripAdvisor user said, adding that the visit offered "interesting insight to what life used to be like before the skyscrapers and Bentleys." However, many recent visitors lament the site's small size, noting that a visit won't require more than an hour or two.

Yas Marina Circuit & Ferrari World Yas Marina Circuit & Ferrari World

Fans of racing will feel at home in Abu Dhabi. While those more interested in Abu Dhabi's heritage make their way to the camel race tracks near Al Ain, travelers with a need for speed need only look to the Yas Marina Circuit for their fill of fast cars. One of the world's most technologically innovative racing venues, the Yas Marina Circuit hosts Grand Prix and Formula 1 races, but when the professionals aren't burning rubber, visitors are welcome to test out the track. Here, you have your choice of racing a variety of vehicles, including go-karts, Mercedes-Benz vehicles and even Aston Martins.

If you're not all that interested in getting behind the wheel, you can explore the facility on a tour. Guides will take you all around the track from the pit garages to the media center to the grandstand. "This was a great behind the scenes tour," one TripAdvisor user said. "Our guide […] was really friendly and informative and it was great to see such an amazing track at close quarters." And if you happen to be in town on a race day, recent visitors highly recommend snagging seats. For the best rates, consider purchasing tickets online in advance on the Yas Marina Circuit website .

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

One of Abu Dhabi's more obscure attractions is the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital: This functioning animal care unit is devoted to the health of falcons, which have long played an important role in Emirati society. Falconry has been practiced in the UAE for thousands of years: Bedouins used falcons to help them hunt and scavenge for food. Today, falconry is more of a sport than a necessity as hunting is now restricted in Abu Dhabi. But the birds are still revered — domesticated falcons are even granted their own UAE passports. Having opened in 1999, the ADFH cares for more than 8,500 falcons each year.

If you're interested in learning more about falconry, the hospital offers two-hour guided tours of its facility. The tour stops at several points of interest, including the falconry museum, the hospital's exam rooms and the aviary, where the birds are free to fly around at their leisure. "Not only is the tour informational, it was exciting," one TripAdvisor user recalled. "We got to watch a minor surgery, grooming, and much more." Another highlight of the tour is the opportunity to balance a falcon on your arm — souvenir photos are included in the cost of the tour.

Abu Dhabi is full of the sorts of things you may be expecting: jaw-dropping modern architecture, historic mosques, over-the-top shopping experiences. But the city is also full of activities that might not immediately come to mind for first time travelers: Eco-minded tours that immerse travelers in tangled mangroves, seaplane tours offering a falcon's-eye-view of the city, and serene spas out in the middle of the biggest sand desert in the world. And while you're exploring, don't overlook the city's underrated parks and palm-lined promenades, which offer even more scenic places to explore—weather permitting, of course.

The Corniche Abu Dhabi

The Corniche Arrow

The Corniche, a five-mile stretch of waterfront real estate, is full of small beaches, playgrounds, art installations, and gardens. People flock here at sunset, as the day begins to cool and as the sky turns orange over the emerald waters. Come for a dip at the beach, or just come to stroll along the meandering pathways. Though there are lots of opportunities to stop and enjoy the view, the beaches are the best excuses; namely, Corniche Public Beach and Al Bahar, the newest developed stretch.

Umm Al Emarat Park Abu Dhabi

Umm Al Emarat Park Arrow

Umm Al Emarat Park, a meticulously designed public park, blends nature with modern design. Rows of palm trees lead to water features that evoke an oasis, but one made to look like a contemporary fountain. The park is home to a number of sites, including an amphitheater, gardens, a playground, and an animal barn. The Wisdom Garden is particularly beautiful, with well-maintained indigenous plants and marble slabs with quotes from the late Sheikh Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Seawings Seaplane Tours Abu Dhabi

Seawings Seaplane Tours Arrow

There are many points from which to admire Abu Dhabi's unique skyline and topography—the towering observation decks, the seaside Corniche —but none rival a private jet. As the only seaplane tour operator in Middle-East, Seawings' aerial tours soar 1,500 feet above the city's architectural marvels, historical sites, and natural wonders. Tours, offered for small group or private charters, depart from Yas Island. Pilots are professional, friendly, and informed, sharing information about whatever's below.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Arrow

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the world's largest, is an Abu Dhabi must-see. Completed in 2007, it can fit 40,000 visitors and worshippers into a space the size of four football fields. But it's not only the size that's impressive. The architecture is a shining culmination of cross-cultural influences: The architects were Emirati, Italian, and British, bringing together design elements from Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan, Egypt, and beyond. The details here are grand, from the reflective pools to the 82 white marble domes, 1,096 exterior columns, and 24-carat gold Swarovski crystal chandeliers, all creating a transcendental experience.

Yas Mall Abu Dhabi

Yas Mall Arrow

One of the primary rules when coming to Abu Dhabi: Don't diss the malls. Malls here are not simply places to shop; they're social and cultural hubs too, especially in summer when it's too hot and humid to congregate outside. Of the many malls sprinkled around Abu Dhabi, Yas Mall is the largest—and the most frequently referenced. The architecture feels more like a hotel than a shopping mall, thanks to the long reflecting pool and otherworldly entrance.

Observation Deck at 300 Arrow

One of Abu Dhabi's most iconic images, is its modern, ever-evolving skyline. The best place to scope out the view? Observation Deck at 300, a sleek, 360-degree lookout on the 74th floor of the posh Jumeirah At Etihad Towers. Although it's the highest vantage point in the city, this isn't your typical tourist spot. As its coveted address suggests, the vibe here is high-class. Rooms are lined with dramatic marble and sleek leather chairs. Hint: Ditch the fanny pack.

Mangrove National Park Abu Dhabi

Mangrove National Park Arrow

Mangrove National Park is one of Abu Dhabi's most notable natural wonders. Home to 60 species of birds, scenic waterways perfect for kayaking, and more than seven square miles, it's a naturalist's dream. The mangroves themselves are also an attraction: They can grow up to 15 feet high, and their famous long root systems “snorkel” out of the saltwater for air. For a closer look, hire one of the licensed and ecologically responsible tour operators to make sure your visit has a minimal impact on the habitat.

Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE Bar Dubai

Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE Arrow

Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE imports a dose of raucous, fancy-free nightlife to often tame Abu Dhabi. Unlike its neighbor Dubai, Abu Dhabi is known more for family-friendly activities than it is for parties. Blue Marlin, however, is the exception, with partiers arriving by car, helicopter, and yacht. Once you’re in, lounge beds line the white-sand beach, and the long bar is always packed. Stiff and refreshing house cocktails with a dose of tropical fruit dominate the menu here, and guests (and sometimes staff) dance until sunrise.

Anantara Spa Abu Dhabi

Anantara Spa Arrow

Set amid rolling sand dunes in the world's largest desert, Anantara Spa draws you in. Guests are transported by buggy to the luxury haven, a standalone property at the massive Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara . The quiet, private space is a pleasure to immerse yourself in for as long as you can. In addition to signature offerings like the Desert Fusion Massage, standout therapies include the 240-minute Arabian Desert Rose Ritual, the Hammam and Dates Experience, and the Qasr Al Sarab Romance Couples' Indulgence Experience. Leave plenty of time for the steam, sauna, and ice rooms.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi Arrow

This massive amusement park dedicated to all things Ferrari opened on Yas Island in 2010. Nearly eight years later, the park is home to Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller-coaster, Flying Aces, the world's tallest non-inverting loop, and the famous Ferrari driving experience, which gives visitors the chance to cruise Abu Dhabi's streets in a real Ferrari. The park is  designed with children in mind, but even speed-freak adults will appreciate the rides and the attention to detail.

Sea Hawk Water Sports Adventures Abu Dhabi

Sea Hawk Water Sports & Adventures Arrow

In-the-know nature loves are already aware that one of the UAE's best-kept secrets is its stunning ecosystem. And with a focus on non-motorized vessels, Seahawk is one of the UAE's primary eco-tourism companies, guiding visitors through it. The tours themselves are thoughtfully curated: kayak through tangled mangroves, row through the Gulf's emerald waters on a traditional Emirati row boats, or under the moonlight around the outer edges of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Nature and wildlife fanatics won't want to miss this immersive experience of Abu Dhabi's natural habitats.

Saadiyat Beach Club Arrow

Saadiyat Beach Club’s illustrious pool and beachside Friday brunch begs the question: Why aren't all brunches this fabulous? A sun-shaded terrace, air-conditioned indoor dining room, and large cabanas provide three options for where to sit, and a delectable triumvirate of barbecue, seafood, and cheese dominate the menu. There’s no going wrong with the Wagyu beef burger, tandoor-marinated chicken, or fresh seasonal seafood spread. The fruit-forward desserts are a fresh, sweet final note. When you're done eating, stick around and hang out on the beach.

Qasr Al Hosn Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al Hosn Arrow

As the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Hosn is one of the city's most significant landmarks. Built at the end of the 18th century, the building's watchtower was the city's first permanent structure, presiding over trade routes. But following an 11-year renovation, it opened in a new iteration, as a cultural center, in 2018. Rotating exhibitions take place in two buildings: the Inner Fort and the newer Outer Palace, which have formerly housed ruling families, the government, and the national archive.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital Arrow

There are few, if any, places in the world where you can have an immersive experience with falcons, but Abu Dhabi's Falcon Hospital is one such place. As the world's leading falcon welfare institute, the facility offers informative tours with hands-on experiences. Tours run from two to three hours; large groups also can create customizable tours. It’s no secret that visitors to the United Arab Emirates associate the country more with sizzling Dubai than stately Abu Dhabi . Yet the UAE’s capital has never been one to chase pizzazz.

Instead, Abu Dhabi has taken initiatives that emphasize heritage and culture, as well as family-friendly offerings such as theme parks. With easy access to beaches, mangroves and a gorgeous swathe of desert aptly known as the Empty Quarter, there’s plenty for nature enthusiasts here, too.

It’s true that Abu Dhabi is noticeably conservative, especially when compared to Dubai. But don’t let that deter you: it doesn’t take long to realize that the city is as ambitious as it is tradition-oriented, a mix that leaves newcomers wanting more.

Here are nine can’t-miss experiences that will show you the best of Abu Dhabi.

A set of arches at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

1. Soak up the spiritual allure of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Among Abu Dhabi’s many architectural wonders, none enraptures visitors quite like Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . Occupying a site the size of four football fields, it can accommodate up to 40,000 worshippers and hosts millions of visitors every year. Despite the footfall, a sense of serenity always obtains – a mood accentuated by the lilting call to prayer that reverberates through the air five times a day.

A team of artisans, architects and engineers from across the globe worked on the monument for 11 years, producing a monument that fuses Mughal, Ottoman and Persian architectural influences. Gold-leaf spires, gilded chandeliers and columns inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones like amethyst lend a sense of opulence.

Visitors can explore the premises solo or with a guide. We recommend arriving late in the afternoon, when you can linger long enough to see the four minarets and 82 domes – all clad in gleaming white marble – bathed in the blue-tinted late-afternoon light.

Detour: Directly opposite the mosque, Wahat Al Karama (Oasis of Dignity) is another architectural feat whose award-winning centerpiece, The Memorial, features 31 aluminum-clad panels that lean against each other to symbolize unity. The Memorial Plaza is where you’ll find the ultimate view of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: behind a shallow pool of water that reflects it beautifully.

Interior of the church at the Abrahamic Family House, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

2. Contemplate the value of religious tolerance at Abrahamic Family House

This interfaith complex features three houses of worship representing the shared values of the three Abrahamic religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism – a celebration of the spirit of tolerance that governs everyday life in the Emirates. A meeting in 2019 between Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb inspired the project, which features the first synagogue built in the Middle East (outside of Israel) in nearly 100 years.   Each of the three cubic sanctuaries is equal in scale, respecting the equality of the faiths they represent. Subtle architectural details – an abstracted crucifix in the church, a suspended bronze veil in the synagogue, panels of latticework in the mosque – salute the spiritual practices and traditions of the three faiths. Visitors are welcome to participate in prayer at any of the sanctuaries, while a guided tour provides a broad overview of all three religions.

Planning tip: Booking a (free) ticket online is required, as is dressing modestly. Women may borrow an abaya or headscarf at reception to visit the mosque.

Formula Rossa, the fastest roller coaster in the world, at Ferrari World, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

3. Keep the whole family occupied at a theme park

World-class theme parks are perhaps what Abu Dhabi does best – and four of them are conveniently located on Yas Island , its entertainment capital. Ferrari World is all about high-octane action: it’s currently home to both the world’s fastest roller coaster and first-ever sideways coaster drop, as well as a 290m (950ft) go-kart track and state-of-the-art simulation experiences. Nearby, Yas Waterworld offers over 40 rides and slides for all ages, tied together by an interactive theme involving the quest to find a legendary pearl. You can even plunge to the depths of an underwater tank to collect oysters containing precious pearls, a nod to the UAE’s pearl-diving heritage. At 1.65 million sq ft (153,290 sq m), Warner Bros World is the largest indoor theme park in the world – and ideal for those in town with the kids during  the hotter months .

Elsewhere in town, Snow Abu Dhabi in Reem Mall makes the impossible possible: sledding, Zorbing and zip-lining inside a winter wonderland in the middle of a desert.

Planning tip: If theme parks are a high priority, look into Yas Island Multi-Park Experiences for discounted ticket bundles, which are ideally suited to large families.

Dune bashing with a 4x4 jeep, Al-Khatim Desert, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

4. Escape to the desert, however you choose

The vast wilderness of Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) is the stuff of legends, the subject of tales of sunken cities and disappearing caravans. Spanning a staggering 650,000 sq km (251,000 sq miles) across multiple countries on the Arabian Peninsula , it’s the largest continuous sand desert on Earth. It also happens to cover 70% of Abu Dhabi, and there are plenty of ways to immerse in its otherworldly beauty, from nature excursions to adrenaline-fueled activities to luxury stays.

A “desert safari” is ideal for first-time visitors. The standard offering comprises a variety of activities: the thrills of dune bashing over and across rolling sand dunes in a 4x4 vehicle, as well as quad biking, sand-boarding, camel rides, belly dance performances and a barbecue dinner. An overnight stay in the desert takes the experience up a notch – think ultra-clear starry skies followed by a spectacular sunrise, and (if done correctly) Bedouin hospitality. At glamping retreat Liwa Nights , Salam Almazrouei – whose Bedouin family has inhabited Liwa Oasis on the northern edge of Rub’ Al Khali for generations – introduces guests to the region’s cuisine, customs and traditions.

Planning tip: If you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s best to take your medicine 30 to 60 minutes before your desert safari begins, for between the dune bashing and quad biking, you’re in for a couple of wild rides. It’s also best to avoid alcohol and heavy meals beforehand.

Interior of the Louvre Abu Dhabi under the “rain of light” dome, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

5. Discover the city’s ambitions at Louvre Abu Dhabi

Louvre Abu Dhabi draws art and culture enthusiasts with its striking architecture; a growing permanent collection that features 700 artworks from every civilization; another 300 pieces on loan from partner museums; and temporary exhibitions that bridge East and West. Masterpieces on permanent view include The Subjugated Reader by René Magritte, Portrait of a Woman by Pablo Picasso and Young Emir Studying by Osman Hamdi Bey.

You could spend many hours in this palace of culture; those pressed for time can book an Express Tour to discover the highlights. However long you spend here, you’ll be able to take in Jean Nouvel’s extraordinary 7500-ton dome, which seems to float over the museum, its perforations creating a “rain of light” effect below.

Planning tip: For an alternative perspective of the architectural grandeur of Louvre Abu Dhabi (which is perched on the lip of the Arabian Sea), you can kayak around the museum come golden hour.

Residents enjoy Corniche Beach, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

6. Immerse yourself in local life along the Corniche

Abu Dhabi’s beloved Corniche , or waterfront esplanade, is where sunburned tourists most often intermingle with residents taking a break from the bustle of urban life. Here, young couples with squealing kids, fitness enthusiasts and elderly promenaders spill out along a promenade dotted with cafes, manicured gardens, volleyball courts and play areas. Dedicated pathways separate cyclists from pedestrians.

Lifeguarded Corniche Beach attracts those looking to beat the heat with a dip. Visitors can expect all the essentials – showers, cabanas, umbrellas and more – at this  Blue Flag site. You’ll find dedicated areas for singles, groups and families, making your beach day both safe and convenient. If you’re looking to really get out on the waves, rent a Jet Ski to whiz along the waterfront and enjoy views of the city’s gleaming skyscrapers.

Planning tip: You’ll want to refuel right after, so look for the food trucks that cluster together under the name In Between (it’s located right by the Corniche stop of the city’s new, tram-like electric bus).

Sun beds by the pool at Saadiyat Beach Club, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

7. Cool off in style at a luxurious beach club

Since year-round sunshine always prevails in this part of the world, pool and beach days are the ultimate leisure pursuit. At Saadiyat Beach Club , white sand and turquoise waters are accented with Mediterranean fare, fitness facilities, a hot tub, private cabanas for when blissful seclusion is desired, and an infinity pool that steals the show every time. The average day here may entail an encounter with a world-class DJ or critically endangered hawksbill turtles – both have been known to make appearances at this stylish place.

The more relaxed Nation Riviera Beach Club and Bayshore Beach Club can both be found within luxury hotels (the St Regis Abu Dhabi and InterContinental Abu Dhabi, respectively), and promise quality family time.

Planning tip: Check  DayPass and  Best Bites for details on the best day passes offered by hotels and beach clubs across the city.

An aerial view of walkways at Jubail Mangrove Park, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

8. Paddle through the waters of Mangrove National Park

Deserts and mangroves don’t seem like a natural pair, but they’re intrinsically linked. Dominating the coastal vegetation of the Arabian Peninsula, dense mangrove trees help purify and calm tidal flows while removing and locking away impressive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In Abu Dhabi, their biodiversity – not to mention their beauty – are protected by a local environmental agency.

In Mangrove National Park , mottled crabs, greater flamingos, western reef herons and even famously skittish dugongs (sea cows) congregate. Kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding through the still waters here is the best way to get up and close with these locals. Check with trusted local tour operators like  Noukhada Adventure Company and  Husaak Adventures .

Fruit and vegetables vendors at night at Al Mina market, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

9. Step back in time in the city’s most historic neighborhoods

Concealed amid the mega malls, luxury hotels and golf courses are the old neighborhoods of Al Danah and Al Zahiyah, both rarely visited by tourists. Mom-and-pop stores have been standing here for over 40 years, suggesting a much simpler past.

On a stroll through their lanes and alleys, you’ll see family-owned bakeries, kebab restaurants, textile stores, tailor shops and salons – a living lesson in how expats from Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Iran, India and Pakistan have shaped this city’s social and cultural fabric. The government has (rightfully) designated these areas as “ Urban Treasures .”

Local tip: A go-to for the city’s long-standing residents, Abu Al Afwal Cafeteria is a humble joint run by Sudanese immigrant Al Zahiyah. Be sure to order a portion of the foul , a hearty stew made with fava beans – a recipe that has been drawing lines of customers since its debut in 1975.

Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi during mid day in hot weather

Abu Dhabi’s desert climate is no joke—summers here sizzle with temperatures soaring past 40°C (104°F). If you’re visiting during the scorching season, pack those breezy, light clothes and keep a water bottle handy to stay cool. But if you’re more into enjoying the city without melting, aim for the sweet spot between November and March. That’s when the weather’s just right, perfect for outdoor adventures and soaking up the sun without breaking a sweat.

Health and Safety

Abu Dhabi’s healthcare is top-notch, with plenty of hospitals and clinics ready to give you first-class care. But before you jet off, make sure you’ve got travel insurance that’s got your back in case of any health surprises. And don’t forget—you’re in a desert, after all. The heat here means serious business, so keep hydrated, slather on sunscreen, and avoid any heat-related hiccups. Your skin—and your peace of mind—will thank you.

Transportation

Abu Dhabi’s public transport game is strong with its reliable buses and taxis, but if you really want to dive into the city and beyond, consider renting a car. It’s like having a VIP pass to explore at your own rhythm. The roads are smooth as silk and driving is a breeze. Just don’t forget your international driving permit—without it, your road trip might hit a snag. So, grab those keys and get ready to navigate the city like a local.

Language and Communication

Friends walking and conversing in the city centre

In Abu Dhabi, Arabic reigns as the official language, but don’t worry—English is everywhere! You’ll find it on signs, menus, and info boards, making it a breeze to get around. Still, picking up a few basic Arabic phrases can be a fun way to connect with locals and add a touch of charm to your travel adventure. So go ahead, sprinkle in a few “shukran” (thank you) and “marhaban” (hello) to make your experience even more memorable.

Currency and Payments

In Abu Dhabi, the UAE Dirham (AED) is your go-to currency. While credit cards will be your best friend in hotels, restaurants, and shops, having a little cash in your wallet is handy for those small purchases and market finds. Don’t fret about running out of cash—ATMs are scattered all over, and currency exchange spots are as common as falafel stands. So, stay flexible and keep those Dirhams flowing smoothly.

Abu Dhabi is a foodie’s paradise, blending traditional Emirati flavours with a smorgasbord of international delights. Whether you’re splurging at a swanky fine dining spot or grabbing a quick bite from a street food stall, there’s a taste adventure waiting for you. Tap water is perfectly safe, but if you prefer bottled, it’s everywhere. Don’t miss out on local favourites like shawarma, falafel, and hummus.

Attractions and Activities

People admiring an artwork at Louvre Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is a treasure trove of must-see landmarks and attractions. Start with the awe-inspiring Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a masterpiece of architecture that’s simply unmissable. Art lovers will be mesmerised by the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s stellar collection, while the Corniche waterfront is perfect for a scenic stroll. For those craving excitement, desert safaris and dune bashing offer a thrilling escape. And don’t forget to check out the city’s festivals and events—there’s always a cultural gem waiting to be discovered.
