For over two years, The Weeknd has been on a musical journey cementing himself as one of the biggest pop performers in modern music history. In 2020, he released After Hours which helmed the record-breaking single “Blinding Lights” and found hits in “Heartless” and “Save Your Tears.” He kicked off 2022 with the release of Dawn FM , his conceptual fifth studio album about being trapped in a discotheque purgatory. Now, The Weeknd is combining these two worlds for the 2022 After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour.

The first leg of the extensive tour will begin in North America with 18 shows supported by pop powerhouse Doja Cat . The tour kicks off in The Weeknd’s hometown of Toronto on July 8 and makes stops in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Atlanta, Denver, Las Vegas, Seattle, and more before wrapping with a show at Los Angeles’ Sofi Stadium on September 2. Additional international dates are to be announced.

Ticket sales for the North American leg of the After Hours Til Dawn tour will begin on Thursday, March 10 via The Weeknd’s official website . Fans who purchased tickets to the After Hours arena tour, originally scheduled for 2021 then rescheduled to 2022 before being canceled entirely for a shift towards stadiums, will receive first access to tickets for the newly announced dates via an exclusive presale beginning March 4.

The Weeknd  will be bringing his last two projects to life with the announcement of his upcoming world tour.

The After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour will be the Canadian pop star's first global tour, after the originally planned After Hours tour was delayed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Grammy-nominated Doja Cat will be joining the "Dawn FM" artist for the North American leg which includes 18 shows beginning with a July performance in his hometown of Toronto at Rogers Centre and ending in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium in September.

It’s expected to be a high-concept, high-tech production in keeping with the themes explored in the new album “Dawn FM” and its accompanying Amazon Prime special, exploring a post-pandemic escape from purgatory.

Behind the weeknd’s success from the beginning to after hours til dawn.

The Weeknd had a record-breaking year between the European leg of the After Hours til Dawn tour and the release of his HBO show, The Idol, but it’s clear that the After Party has only just begun.

by Jubran Haddad from the Chartmetric Blog

Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye had an exceptional summer, quite unlike any other. It all began with the HBO premiere of  The Idol  on June 4, which he co-created and starred in. Two days later on June 6, the After Hours til Dawn tour kicked off in Lisbon, Portugal, with sold-out shows across multiple cities, concluding in London on August 18. The tour, following a successful North American leg, showcased The Weeknd’s evolution since his 2009 debut, from  House of Balloons  to  Starboy  to  After Hours . His ability to reinvent his sound and maintain global relevance over a decade reaffirmed his status as a musical icon.

miss you … this summer belongs to europe XO pic.twitter.com/2wVk24hjvJ — Abel Tesfaye (@theweeknd) March 29, 2023

But, that was just the beginning. Throughout the summer, he dropped several singles for the show, such as “Popular,” featuring Madonna and Playboi Carti, which surpassed  358.8  million streams, and a cover of John Lenon’s “Jealous Guy.” Additionally, he joined forces with Travis Scott and Bad Bunny on “K-POP,” a track that garnered over  201.5  million streams. On top of that, he even broke  a few records , including attendance records with 160k fans at London Stadium over two nights and the record for the first artist to sell out two nights at Milan’s Ippodromo La Maura in Italy.

A Global Icon

The Weeknd has solidified his status as a global music sensation with chart-topping hits that have garnered billions of Spotify streams. From “ Blinding Lights ,” which has gotten nearly 3.9 billion plays since its release in November 2019, to “ Starboy ,” released in September 2016, with over 2.8 billion streams, his catalog is a testament to his global appeal. Tracks like “The Hills,” “Die For You,” and “Save Your Tears” have also captivated audiences worldwide, each boasting over a billion Spotify streams.

He currently ranks as the second most-listened-to artist on Spotify, with 103.7 million monthly listeners and a dedicated following of 74.58 million followers, with his fan base coming from all over the world. In the past year, he has gained an additional 24.7 million new monthly listeners, a 31.2% increase. He has a strong global reach: his top five countries by Spotify monthly listeners are the United States, the Philippines, India, Mexico, and Indonesia and his top cities are Mexico City, Jakarta, London, São Paulo, and Sydney.

Following the successful first leg of his After Hours til Dawn tour in North America, which included a  live album  and an  HBO concert film , the tour headed to Europe for the summer. According to the current audience data, he performed in nearly all of his top European countries and cities and even did multiple shows in cities such as Stockholm, Paris, and London. Overall, this leg of his tour consisted of 30 shows in 22 cities across Europe.

The  setlist  for the tour featured “permanent” songs performed in most shows, primarily from Tesfaye’s 2020 album  After Hours  and the 2022 album  Dawn FM , as well as some of his biggest hits. Unlike the first leg of the tour, in which the setlist remained consistent throughout the leg, the setlist saw changes in most shows, where Tesfaye surprised the fans with “bonus” tracks, which were played only a few times or even only once during the tour. Most of these tracks were from his debut album   Kiss Land  and the compilation album  Trilogy , tracks that he hasn’t played in over ten years, in addition to some songs from  The Idol .

What makes this intriguing is how these live performances had a tangible impact on Spotify streams. Unlike the conventional TikTok-to-Spotify or TikTok-to-Shazam pipeline for music discovery, the tour has shown an interesting effect where the live concert experience influences streaming. An example of this is the song “ Tears In The Rain ,” released in 2013 as part of Tesfaye’s debut album,  Kiss Land . The track was performed by Tesfaye at all stops on the tour after first being played in Stockholm on June 17 (the fourth show of the tour). Two days later on June 19, there was a sudden increase in Spotify streams, which has continued to grow ever since. Similar increases were also seen in the Shazam and Genius views of the song.

“Tears In The Rain” is considered a deep cut from his extensive catalog and may have resonated with newer fans introduced to it through the live setlist. The immersive and emotional experience of witnessing the live song might have sparked a newfound appreciation, leading them to seek it on streaming platforms. Furthermore, attendee’s social media posts and word of mouth can also spark curiosity and FOMO among fans who didn’t attend, driving fans to repeatedly stream the song to connect with the broader fan community.

Moreover, this sheds light on the evolving dynamics of fan communities and the challenges of reconciling long-time enthusiasts’ experiences with the artist’s current global appeal. While some argue that being a fan of The Weeknd is now more mainstream, with the artist’s widespread popularity evident in Spotify numbers, stadium concert attendance, and TikTok trends, others express nostalgia for the earlier, more niche  XO  fan culture, who were there since the original days of “Tears In The Rain.”

Streaming Boost

During the summer, his Spotify streaming activity went through two phases. The first phase, which took place from June 3 to July 22, centered on his weekly new music created for  The Idol . It consisted of  six separately released EPs  between June 9 and July 3, 2023, which were released around the premiere of each episode.

The second phase was from July 22 to August 19, in which he collaborated with Travis Scott and Bad Bunny on “K-POP” and then on “CIRCUS MAXIMUS” with Scott (again) and Swae Lee. The collaborations were part of Scott’s fourth album, UTOPIA, and his fantastic performances in these songs, in addition to big shows in Milan and London for his tour during this time period, helped him achieve a new milestone and break a record as the first artist to reach 113 million Spotify monthly listeners.

When a popular artist like The Weeknd performs abroad, it often leads to increased streaming of their songs by local fans and concert attendees as a result of excitement and anticipation for the live event. During the tour, there were notable spikes in his Spotify monthly listeners in multiple cities. After his second Stockholm show on June 18, his local listenership increased by 11.2k the next day, and 7.7k the day after, marking the greatest daily increase since January 2, 2022 (20.6k) in the city. This surge can likely be attributed to the tour rather than the release of a  new EP , due to how sizable the increase was and the lack of significant changes for the prior EPs for  The Idol .

Similarly in Milan, there was a significant increase in his Spotify monthly listeners following his performances on July 26 and 27, with a growth of 13.6k on both July 27 and July 28. This was the highest increase since July 26, 2022 (32.4k). His monthly listeners grew by an average of 12.5k per day over the next three days, thanks to two sold-out nights and a  crowd of around 160k attendees .

With a  record-breaking  87k tickets sold for a “traditional concert set-up” at Wembley Stadium, Tesfaye witnessed a significant surge of 39k Spotify monthly listeners in the city. This increase marked the most substantial change in his Spotify monthly listeners in London since November 2, 2018, and stood out as the highest one-day increase throughout the entire European leg. The surge in monthly listeners suggests that, with a large number of fans attending the show and wanting to listen to his music before the event, local fans were highly engaged with his music.

Consequently, artists’ tracks may climb the local charts, potentially reaching higher positions or even debuting when they are on tour. In this case, the immediate effect of the tour was seen on the Spotify Daily Top 50 and Apple Music Daily Top 100 charts in the days leading up to and following the concert. The countries with the highest new peaks for his songs on Spotify’s Daily Top 50 were Ireland (4), the Czech Republic (4), Belgium (5), and Estonia (18), all of which were countries where he performed. For example, on August 12, the same day of the show in Estonia, 14 of the 50 tracks on the country’s Spotify Daily Top 50 chart were by or featured The Weeknd, including “House of Balloons” and “The Hills.”

The impact was more noticeable on the Apple Music Daily Top 100, where 75 new peaks or debuts were observed across various countries. For instance, the song “I Can’t Feel My Face” (released on June 8, 2015) achieved new peak positions in nine nations. In the Netherlands, “The Hills” jumped 63 positions to number 34 the day after the second show in the city.

Yet, the tour’s impact extended beyond the borders of the countries where he performed. For instance, neighboring countries like Latvia and Lithuania saw shifts in their Spotify Daily Top 50, featuring songs like “Blinding Lights,” “Moth To A Flame,” and “Lost In The Fire,” correlating with the date of the shows in the neighboring country Estonia.

Social Media

From videos of the Hajime Sorayama  robot statue in the middle of the stage  to  videos of fans singing along  or even The Weeknd himself  singing with a fan ,  #TheWeekndConcert  has over 1.3 billion views on TikTok. With that, endless official and fan-made sounds were used. For instance, “ Moth To A Flame ” jumped from 26.1k posts on June 6 to 32k on August 18, a growth of 22.6%. “ The Hills ” increased slightly since June 23, jumping from 307.4k posts to 332.4k, a growth of 8.13% by August 18.

Tesfaye’s adept use of social media platforms became integral to the tour experience. Before any show, he posted teases of songs he might perform, adding unpredictability and engagement to each tour stop. For instance, he  hinted  at the inclusion of fan favorite “ High for This ” in Amsterdam. Fans were left speculating whether he would surprise them with such a rare gem during the show. He ended up teasing and performing the song, fulfilling fans’ anticipation.

For established superstars, social media is primarily used to  interact and engage  with their fans and promote new releases. It is more of a tool for fan retention, rather than discovery or shaping their public image. However, The Weeknd saw a remarkable surge in his Instagram following from May 29 to June 28 of this year. He gained an impressive 3.5 million new followers in just that one month, indicating that despite his fame, he continues to attract new fans.

Going on Tour is His Vacation

From the different setlists per city, surprising fans, and the thrill of live performances, there is something for everyone to take away from this tour, whether you are an artist or a fan. It’s a celebration of more than a decade of great artistry, dedicated fandom, and, ultimately, the entire alternate world of The Weeknd’s persona. As he sings in “Snowchild,”   “Going on tour is my vacation.”

Unfortunately, The Weeknd is now experiencing an extended vacation from this vacation. After the recent  South American leg , he is now faced with the disappointment of  postponing tour dates in Australia and New Zealand  due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite this setback, the memories created during this summer will endure as one of the highlights of his career, forever holding a special place in the hearts of his European fans. Til next time, Abel Tesfaye — hope to catch you at the  After Party .

The tour is in support of The Weeknd’s After Hours album released in 2020 and his Dawn FM album released this year, with the original After Hours dates pushed back multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After Hours had a hugely successful run in the UK Albums chart, peaking at number one, and producing top 10 singles Heartless and Save Your Tears, as well global number one hit Blinding Lights, which ranks as the sixth most streamed song of all time in the UK.

His Dawn FM album, which also features on the tour, hit number one in the UK following its release earlier in the year.

The Weeknd Announces Massive After Hours Til Dawn Global Tour

The singer will embark on his first ever global stadium tour.

The world has waited long enough for The Weeknd to tour his After Hours album. After postponing his original After Hours arena tour in October 2021 in order to rework the show for a larger audience, the time has finally come. Presenting The Weeknd’s massive After Hours Til Dawn summer 2022 tour, the star’s first-ever global stadium tour that will be bringing to life his last two albums — After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM — into one massive, dynamic, and world-building show.

Kicking off in his hometown of Toronto on July 8, the slew of shows will take the “Blinding Lights” singer to iconic venues throughout Canada and the U.S. including New York’s MetLife Stadium, Chicago’s Soldier Field, Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium, and many more. Doja Cat was scheduled to open for the singer on all of the dates, however pulled out from the tour in May to recover from tonsil surgery .

When The Weeknd first announced the postponement of his After Hours arena tour, he wrote on Instagram that he wanted “to do something bigger and special for you which requires special stadiums.” It appears he did just that as a press release teases the new show will be “creating worlds within worlds [...] bringing these first two pieces of his trilogy to life.”

So far, only the dates for the North American leg of the tour have been released. Subsequent dates in Mexico, South America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East will be announced soon.

In the meantime, check out everything we know about attending the After Hours Til Dawn 2022 tour, including the announced dates so far, performance venues, and how to score tickets.

Just when you thought the weekend was over, it's back again. The Weeknd has announced he's coming back to Australia before the end of the year for a string of massive shows in Eora/Sydney and Naarm/Melbourne.

He'll be finally bringing his After Hours Til Dawn tour down under in October, taking over Accor Stadium and Marvel Stadium for four nights on either end of the month.

These dates will mark his first stadium gigs in Australia and his first shows here since 2017 but The Weeknd knew he wanted to get over to our end of the world before he closes the book on this era of his creative career.

"I feel a strong pull to perform in Australia before moving on to the next chapter and want to make sure you all know I hadn't forgotten about you," he said in a statement.

"When I return now, it will be the right time, and I promise it will be such a special experience. I can't wait to see you all!"

Everything we've seen of the After Hours Til Dawn tour on TikTok has made it look larger than life. There's a giant, chrome robot woman, elaborate Tron-like masks, pyrotechnics, a huge moon, lasers – the lot.

Tickets for the new tour from The Weeknd are on sale from Wednesday 21 August for past purchasers first – so if you had tickets to his last lot of dates, you're first in line . There's then another presale on Thursday 22 August and general tickets are on sale from Monday 26 August. Check out The Weeknd's tour website for more information.

Check out all the dates and details below and we might just see you there.

Local news:

Australia set to scrap much hated airport chore

The weeknd excludes brisbane in australian leg of after hours tour after cancelling initial shows.

Warren Barnsley

After initially including Brisbane in the now-cancelled Australian leg of his world tour, RnB megastar The Weeknd has reneged on the Queensland capital in announcing a new series of shows down under.

Brisbane was due for two sold-out Suncorp Stadium shows for the After Hours Til Dawn tour in late 2023, before the Canadian singer’s visit to Australia was postponed indefinitely and subsequently cancelled.

On Monday, The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, announced shows at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on October 5 and 6 and Accor Stadium in Sydney on October 22 and 23.

“AUSTRALIA, I didn’t forget about you 🖤 See you in October,” he said on his social media accounts.

He said in a statement: “I feel a strong pull to perform in Australia before moving on to the next chapter and want to make sure you all know I hadn’t forgotten about you. When I return now, it will be the right time, and I promise it will be such a special experience. I can’t wait to see you all.”

It’s a poor result for the host city of the 2032 Olympics, after pop sensation Taylor Swift also excluded Brisbane in her The Eras tour in February.

“OK ain’t no way I bought tickets last year, waited for the show to be rescheduled, got a refund when the show was cancelled, but now you come back and aren’t doing a show in Brisbane. Crazy,” one person commented on The Weeknd’s Instagram post.

The Weeknd Dawn FM

Another wrote: “’Australia I didn’t forget about you’. Clearly forgot about f****** Brisbane. Actual bull****.”

One person wrote on tour company Live Nation’s Facebook page: “What about us here in Brisbane? Yet again, another concert skipping our state, especially when many of us were also previous ticket holders.”

One possible reason Brisbane was excluded is its lack of world-class stadiums, due to a failure of governments to invest in sporting and entertainment infrastructure.

The city’s two biggest stadiums Suncorp Stadium and the Gabba endure high use during the October period with cricket and soccer, after bearing the brunt of NRL, Super Rugby and AFL seasons.

Live Nation has been contacted for comment.

Taylor Swift fans flock to London for final leg of Eras Tour after Vienna terrorism plot

Taylor Swift is poised to wrap up the European leg of her record-breaking tour with five performances in London starting on Thursday amid tight security following a thwarted terror plot that targeted her show in Vienna.

Last week, Austrian authorities prevented what was believed to be an ISIS-linked terror plot targeting one of her shows in Vienna. Three shows were canceled .

Swift’s team is working closely with organizers in the U.K. to ensure heightened security this weekend as fans flock to Wembley Stadium for the second time this summer.

Katrina Hutchins said she surprised her 9-year-old son Callahan with tickets to Thursday's London show as a Christmas gift last year. While the news from Vienna rattled them, Hutchins said her son was primarily concerned about Swift's mental health and well-being.

"I keep reassuring him that the security will be tighter than ever, and Wembley may just be the very safest place to be in the next couple of days," Hutchins said.

The pair traveled from Charlotte, North Carolina, to London to see Callahan's idol, who inspired him to audition for his school's musical.

“Yes, he loves her music, of course, and her as a performer, but honestly, it’s the backstory and who she is as a person and the risks that she took and her perseverance that really inspired him to go ahead and leap on his own," Hutchins said.

Sasha Ridge, 29, said she plans to attend multiple Swift shows this weekend and, after going to her June shows in the same venue, she said she feels confident that fans will be safe in Wembley.

"Once I found out that the Vienna shows were a target on Vienna and not Taylor herself, no I wasn't nervous," Ridge said. "I know that Wembley security is good anyway, and I know that they would have upped it so that we'd be even more safe."

She also intends to partake in an array of London festivities, including a Taylor Swift-themed pottery painting class. Ridge, who hails from Oxford, roughly an hour away from London, began working on handmade costumes for herself and her 11-year-old niece in January.

There will be some changes to security at Wembley. While fans who were unable to score tickets have previously been permitted to stand outside the stadium and listen to the show from afar, no "tay-gating" will be allowed in London this weekend.

“A couple of my friends were going to tay-gate, but they’re not able to now. It is sad, but it’s for the best,” Ridge said.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour - London

Wembley officials said : “To support with the safe entry and exit of everyone within the stadium, no one is allowed to stand outside any entrance or on the Olympic Steps at the front of the stadium. Non ticket holders will be moved on.”

The venue also noted that "additional ticket checks" will be instituted this weekend.

At last month’s Munich shows, an estimated 50,000 people sat on a hillside across from the stadium to hear the reverberations of hits like “Cruel Summer” and “Blank Space.”

London fans will also be permitted to enter the stadium earlier than at previous venues , with the doors opening 15 minutes ahead of schedule.

"In June, I felt safe," Ridge said of the security in London. "I know that I feel even safer now, with all the extra measurements and all the extra security."

2024 St. Jude Championship leaderboard, grades: Hideki Matsuyama survives back nine to win FedEx Cup opener

Matsuyama fought back to claim the first leg of the 2024 fedex cup playoffs by a slim margin.

Hideki Matsuyama officially notched his 10th PGA Tour victory by first running away before coming back to the field as he stood tough to win the 2024 St. Jude Championship.

Matsuyama finished the week at 17 under for a two-stroke victory over Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland, scoring birdies across his last two holes to create the winning margin. He also won the first leg of the 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs, his first such victory in the PGA Tour postseason.

Climbing to third place in the FedEx Cup standings -- a personal best this late into the season -- Matsuyama would begin the Tour Championship three shots back of Scottie Scheffler should he maintain his positioning through next week's BMW Championship.

Matsuyama is the sixth player to win multiple times this season, and that is beyond the bronze medal he claimed at the 2024 Paris Olympics just a couple weeks ago. The postseason title gets added to a résumé that already included wins at the Masters, Memorial and Genesis Invitational with a pair of World Golf Championships to boot. His 10 PGA Tour trophies are accompanied by eight others from the Japan Golf Tour; he now approaches 20 worldwide victories.

The 32-year-old entered the final round in Memphis holding the largest 54-hole lead of the season at five strokes. Having already claimed the largest final-round comeback this year with his six-stroke win at Riviera in February, Matsuyama knew there was still work to be done despite his Sunday morning advantage.

Going back-and-forth on the practice putting green between his newly introduced putter and an old gamer, Matsuyama made the decision to keep feeding the hot hand. Though he led the field in strokes gained approach and strokes gained putting through three rounds, his firepower subsided Sunday.

Enjoying a hefty diet of pars through his first seven holes, Matsuyama's margin was cut to four by his playing partner Nick Dunlap. With Dunlap's tee shot on the par-3 8th settling inside 10 feet and Matsuyama's outside 35 feet, it appeared the lead would be cut to three as the two walked off the tee. However, the faith in the new putter paid off for Matsuyama as he connected from distance and instead ballooned his lead back to five.

It would remain at that margin until the back nine where charges were made by big names like Schauffele, Hovland and Scheffler. They appeared to be for naught until life was injected into the tournament on the par-4 12th where Matsuyama had a brief discussion with a rules official that appeared to take him out of rhythm.

His first bogey of the round soon followed, and the mistakes would pile up from there. Hitting his ball in the water on the par-3 14th, Matsuyama did well to only drop just one shot before giving up a pair the next hole. Suddenly, the five-stroke lead was entirely relinquished when Hovland made birdie two holes ahead to push the reigning FedEx Cup champion to 16 under.

With Schauffele in the clubhouse at 15 under following a final-round 63, a score was set for Matsuyama and Hovland to best. The Norwegian faltered as his short-game woes arrived at the most inopportune time; he failed to get a relatively straight forward up-and-down for par on No. 17 to drop into a three-way tie at the top.

It was that same green where, moments later, Matsuyama regained control of the tournament. Facing an unlikely birdie bid, he converted his fifth putt from outside 25 feet on the week when his ball found the bottom of the cup.

With Hovland missing his 9-foot effort on the last, Matsuyama needed only a par to secure the title. He did one better knocking in a rare birdie on the par-4 18th to put a bow on what was anything but a stress-free Sunday in Memphis. Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the 2024 St. Jude Championship.

T2. Viktor Hovland (-15):  Hovland warned us that he had no idea when everything was going to click for him. It clicked at TPC Southwind. The most encouraging part is that Hovland finished among the top five in strokes gained on approach  and  off the tee, a remarkable deviation from most of his year. After starting the St. Jude Championship sitting 57th in the FedEx Cup standings, his T2 finish moves him all the way to 16th. He easily advances to the BMW Championship where he returns to try and defend his title. At that spot, he's also a threat to sneak his way into the Tour Championship two weeks from now where he would be attempting to go back to back as well.  Grade: A-

4. Scottie Scheffler (-13):  No harm, no foul for Scheffler, who easily maintains his No. 1 position in the FedExCup standings going to the last two playoff events. The important point for him is that nobody in the top five won, and Schauffele did not really make up all that much ground. Scheffler still has a 1,500-point lead on Schauffele, and he will almost certainly be the No. 1 seed at the Tour Championship where he would start at 10 under. The scenario for Schauffele to catch him at the BMW Championship next week would require a tournament victory.  Grade: B+

T5. Nick Dunlap (-14):  On the one-year anniversary of his U.S. Amateur victory, Dunlap nearly won for the third time as a professional. It was during a crucial week as he started the tournament outside the top 50 in the standings and required a monstrous performance to advance into the BMW Championship. We can quibble with a number of different things with his game right now, but the bottom line is that he's 20, already an above-average iron player on the PGA Tour and contends for victories seemingly all the time as a pro. Who knows where Dunlap's career will eventually end up, but this is an extraordinary start, even if it's being overlooked for bigger and splashier storylines.  Grade: A

T68. Rory McIlroy (+9):  It was a strange week for McIlroy, but everything has been a bit off since he kicked away the U.S. Open in June. He tied Jordan Spieth for 68th, which doesn't sound terrible until you remember that there were only 70 golfers in the field. McIlroy subsequently dropped just three spots in the FedEx Cup standings, which is certainly not insurmountable but nevertheless a bummer of a start for somebody who has had another terrific season overall.  Grade: D-

That is HUGE!!! Hideki drains his birdie bid on No. 17 and is alone atop the leaderboard at 16 under. He heads to the final hole in the solo lead. That is his fifth putt made from outside 25 feet this week. Hovland is about to line up his birdie bid on the last to tie Matsuyama.

Hovland has 9 feet for clubhouse lead

If he buries that, that could be the winning putt. From the rough on No. 18, Viktor Hovland stuffs it inside 10 feet and will have that to get to 16 under and eliminate Xander Schauffele from contention. Hideki Matsuyama is tied with the two at 15 under and has about 25 feet for birdie on No. 17.

Schauffele posts clubhouse lead at 15 under

It is a final-round 63 for Xander Schauffele and he is in the house at 15 under. He began the day nine off the pace and will now have to wait for Hideki and Viktor to finish. Both players are struggling around the green at the moment as Hideki may not take advantage of the par-5 16th and Hovland has about 20 feet to save par on No. 17 to stay at 16 under.

Tee to green play

Strokes gained tee to green this week.

1. Fleetwood (T22) 2. Aaron Rai (T16) 3. Viktor Hovland (1) 4. Scottie Scheffler (T5)

Hovland is the only one of those guys currently in the top 10 in putting. Fleetwood and Rai are close to last.

The wheels have fallen off

Things have gotten very interesting. Viktor Hovland has made birdie on the par-5 16th to reach 16 under and should be at worst in a share of the lead with Hideki Matsuyama who is making a mess of No. 15. He faces 18 feet for bogey after duffing his third from long of the green.

Big blunder from Hideki

Well, that makes things interesting. Hideki finds the water on the par-3 14th and will need to do well from the drop area to save bogey. Up ahead, Xander Schauffele faces a birdie look on the par-5 16th that would get him within three before Hideki signs for a score on No. 14. The lead could be down to one.

Bobby Mac bounces into the top 10

That's a big eagle for some! Bobby MacIntyre holes out from the greenside bunker on the par-5 16th to climb to 12 under and into a share of fourth place. Because of this, Nick Dunlap drops another spot to 48th in the FedEx Cup.

Xander Schauffele starting to move

The two-time major champ is starting to move toward the lead. He went out in 31 and just birdied the par-4 12th. He's three holes ahead of Hideki Matsuyama, but if he can get it in the house at, say, 16 under things could get a little bit interesting.

Big back nine needed from Nick Dunlap

A three-putt bogey on No. 10 drops Nick Dunlap into a share of fourth place which seems fine on the surface. However, that means he is now projected to finish 47th in the FedEx Cup and has no room for error. To make matters worse for Dunlap are the names around him on the leaderboard — Scottie Scheffler, Sam Burns, Wyndham Clark and more.

Hideki holds five-stroke lead with nine to play

He's held serve through the front nine and will take a five-stroke lead into the back nine. Hideki Matsuyama has been steady thus far with eight pars and a lengthy birdie putt on No. 8. Nick Dunlap is still his closest pursuer, but Viktor Hovland has emerged as well with a nice front nine to get to 13 under.

Madden 25: 10 things i learned in my first 24 hours.

I've only had Madden 25 for 48 hours. Still, I've already played all of my qualifying matches online head-to-head, started a couple of franchise modes, played the mini-games, completed a deep dive into the customization options, and touched Superstar mode and Ultimate Team.

I'll complete my tour of the game by Friday when the game officially releases and the embargo on scored reviews is lifted. In the meantime, here are the ten things I've learned about Madden 25 in my first 24 hours with the game.

Notes are incoming from the second 24.

Players Are More Tangible

Madden 25 Hit

For the first time in series history, I can feel the physics-based tackling that the Madden team has been mentioning for years. I was taking a break and allowing my son to get a few games in, and he said, "My controller has never rumbled this much in Madden."

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

That was a perfect observation and way to capture the feel of this year's game. Players react much more from contact, and there are far fewer instances when your immersion is broken because of an unrealistic situational animation.

This quality is a big reason for the following item on the list.

I'm Enjoying the Gameplay...Think College Football 25

This is far and away the most fun I've had playing Madden in years.

Dynamic players are fun to control on both sides of the ball. The development team has found the correct balance with collisions, allowing for satisfying hits that serve as a transfer of energy while playing defense.

Likewise, some of the combinations of moves that can be executed in the open field will be the playground for content creators all over social media.

It feels much like College Football 25–especially after the patch–only with far more recognizable players.

Madden Could Benefit From a Dynamic Difficulty Setting

Many users will default to All-Madden or All-Pro when playing, but the series could benefit from a dynamic difficulty setting. Madden used to have this option years ago, but it went away for some reason.

Dynamic Difficulty is excellent for helping offline users find their sweet spot without tasking them with bumping up a level when it's time for a new challenge.

I appreciate this option in MLB the Show and miss it in Madden.

Franchise Mode Feels More Alive...But

The moment you get to the dashboard in franchise mode, you can feel the difference. It's amazing what a user-interface refresh can do.

A lot of what's available from an information standpoint isn't new; it's just arranged in a way that is more accessible and fun to look through.

What is new is the conversation system in franchise mode, which feels more like a rogue-lite experience, which is ideal for playing the role of head coach or owner of a football team.

In a nutshell, the engine is powered by promises, commitments, goals, successes, and failures. The rewards are attribute boosts and team and staff upgrades that help build a successful organization.

The panel on the left side of the screen is excellent for reminding you of the promises and commitments you've made, and the cutscenes do the heavy lifting for telling the stories that power an effective franchise mode experience.

On the downside, the halftime show still needs to be improved, and we don't have a weekly wrap-up show. We're missing in-game highlights from other teams, so we need a way to make that relevant to the user.

Imagine if your best plays could be in contention for Top-10 Plays of the Week, and winning the fan vote could lead to some XP boost, an ability, or maybe even an X-Factor. It may lead to more fans or viewers in the stadium.

Maybe watching highlights feeds some preparation metric for your team or coaching staff. I'm spitballing ideas, but hopefully, EA sees the vision. I get EA not wanting to invest in something that users will skip, but the challenge is making it matter first, and then having users appreciate the work after incorporating it into the flow of franchise mode.

Superstar Mode Has Some Legs

I'll admit, Superstar mode is sometimes an afterthought for me, but I gave it some serious time over the past two days, and I like the bones that are there. The addition of Quests brings some life and gets you more invested in your character.

The Combine feels relevant to and impacts the player you choose, which makes you a little more engaged from the start.

The Shackles Are Off in Customization

In addition to the improved gameplay, the best thing I've learned about Madden 25 is the newfound depth in customization. From more player heads in create-a-player to TeamBuilder (which doesn't have the same limitations as the College Football 25 version), Madden franchise mode feels as much like a sandbox experience as it ever has.

With a completely customizable franchise mode experience, this mode is still where I will spend most of my time.

The Soundtrack is Stellar

Usually, I don't care about the quality of a soundtrack in a game. My time as a content creator has made me afraid to keep music on for fear of receiving a copyright claim or strike.

Also, a failure to mute game soundtracks usually results in me having a song that, initially, I wouldn't say I liked beating in my head for months.

That said, there are some bangers on this soundtrack.

Older songs like 50 Cent's In Da Club and Mustard's Ballin' were pleasant surprises, while I loved newer tracks from Rapsody like Back in My Bag and Madden 25 officially put me up on RLDGLDGRN (Red, Gold, Green).

I'm still going to shut it off, but while it's on, this is a vibe.

The Mini-Games Are a Blast

EA has done a great job putting together various mini-games for all positions. Call me strange, but some of the ones for kickers and punters are my favorite.

They remind me of the mini-games in Virtua Tennis, which are still the best I've ever played in a sports game.

Madden's mini-games give us a great mix of arcade and football-centric concepts.

Not Every Commentary Team Offers Equal Quality

I love the idea of having multiple commentary teams, and this critique shouldn't discourage EA from moving deeper into this type of expansion. However, while Mike Tirico, Greg Olsen, Kate Scott, and Brock Huard offer a different sound than Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis, the flow in their lines isn't there quite yet.

It took years of sewing together old and new lines from Gaudin and Davis before things got to where they are with that team. This take isn't a criticism of the talent; it's more of an acknowledgment that it'll take some time before the new teams sound as good as the old ones.

The New Season Mode Almost Convinced Me to Play More MUT

I'm not a huge Ultimate Team guy, and here's why: Whenever I play a game or mode, I ask myself two questions: what's my motivation, and where or does this have an end?

Regarding MUT, I find it hard to answer those two questions. The other disconnect for me comes when I start to see cards that have defensive linemen as kickers and unrealistically juiced cards to increase the power curve.

While it is obviously a successful formula, it's just not my cup of tea. However, more power to hardcore MUT players and respect to EA for pioneering the concept.

That said, the Solo Seasons feature answers the first two questions. While it doesn't scratch the PvP itch, it does give me a bit of a franchise mode feel by providing a season and postseason format.

Stay tuned for my full-scored review later this week.

Hideki Matsuyama survives late collapse, rules controversy, wins first FedEx Cup playoff event

Hideki Matsuyama survived a rules controvery and late collapse Sunday.

Michael Wade/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Through 64 holes this week, Matsuyama was unflappable — to the point where he’d built a five-shot lead at the FedEx St. Jude Championship as he walked off the 11th green.

It had been a week filled with adversity for Matsuyama outside the ropes, but no matter. Matsuyama seemed just fine inside the ropes. That’s where he appeared to be cruising to his second PGA Tour title of the season.

It didn’t go so smoothly.

As Matsuyama headed to 12, a rules official approached.

They talked. The NBC broadcasters were confused.

Eventually, PGA Tour Lead TV Rules and Video Analyst Mark Dusbabek came on to explain that Matsuyama wasn’t going to be penalized. Five holes earlier, at the 7th, Matsuyama had stepped on a pitch mark that was off the green. But it was determined, after the conversation, that it was far enough away from his intended line of play, so no penalty.

PGA Tour rules official Gary Young told Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis the Tour later found supporting video evidence that the pitch mark was about three feet off his line of play.

Matsuyama also told Lewis later the conversation didn’t bother him.

“If I was worried that I had done something wrong and was going to be penalized, that would have rattled me,” Matsuyama said through his interpreter. “But it was really a non-issue so it was fine.”

It didn’t look that way.

Hideki Matsuyama plays a shot at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship money: Here’s how much every player made

He then pulled his tee shot at the 12th and made bogey. No worries, he was still up four shots.

He then pushed his tee shot on 13 into the bunker. No worries, he made par and was still up four.

He then blocked his approach at 14 into the water. No worries, he got up and down for bogey and was still up two.

He then blasted his approach at 15 over the green and flubbed his pitch short of the green and made double. No worries, he had a par-5 remaining.

He then left his third shot short of the green and missed the putt for birdie. Big worry. His once-five-shot lead was gone and he had two brutal par-4s at TPC Southwind left to play.

“When I was playing the 16th hole and looked at the scoreboard, sure enough … I was a stroke back,” Matsuyama admitted afterward. “I felt today’s victory slipping away at that point because 17 and 18 are difficult holes enough, let alone to birdie them.”

That’s when Matsuyama flipped the script. After finally finding the green in regulation on 17, Matsuyama buried a birdie putt from 26 feet to take the lead by one over Xander Schuaffele and Viktor Hovland, who had a birdie putt from nine feet on the 18th. But Hovland missed and Matsuyama stuffed his approach at Southwind’s hardest hole to six feet, making the putt to secure a two-shot victory at 16 under in the first FedEx Cup Playoff event of the season.

“I knew I still had two holes left, and that was just what I was thinking: Two more holes. I’ve got to make one birdie,” he said. “On that putt [on 17], I drew from this entire week’s putting on the greens. I putted well all week, and I thought, well, I did it before, let’s do it again. Then 18 was just gravy, I guess.”

His even-par 70 in the final round doesn’t begin to tell the full story.

It’s Matusyama’s second win of the season after he won for the first time in two years at the Genesis Invitational earlier in February.

Hideki Matsuyama is working with a new caddie at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Hideki Matsuyama dishes on robbery, emergency caddie, low score

Matsuyama’s week was thrown into chaos before it even began when he, his caddie, Shota Hayafuji, and coach, Mikhito Kuromiya were all robbed at the London Airport while traveling from the Olympics. Hayafuji and Kuromiya both had their passports taken , which meant they had to go back to Japan.

While Dan Hicks reported Hayafuji would be back in time for next week’s BMW Championship, he had to miss this week.

However, Matsuyama dominated all week with fill-in caddie Taiga Tabuchi and a brand-new putter. The 2021 Masters winner entered the week 133rd on the Tour in strokes gained: putting, but led the field in the category for the week, despite contemplating a putter change on Sunday.

“It was Taiga’s first time I’ve worked with him,” Matsuyama said. “In fact, I hadn’t really spoken to him very much prior to this week. I knew he was caddying for Ryo on the Tourearlier in the year, so we did play some practice rounds together.

“On the course, you have a routine, but with a new caddie, that routine changes, and so we were working through that all week. But he was a great help to me. Helped me read a lot of putts. A lot of good lines that he gave me.”

His last-minute recovery and Hovland’s late miss prevented Hovland from winning his third-straight playoff event after winning both the BMW and Tour Championship in 2023 on his way to the FedEx Cup title.

But Hovland is in a very different place than he was a year ago as he entered this week outside the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings. His co-runner-up finish nearly assures him a chance to defend both his BMW and Tour Championship titles despite the down year.

He finished tied with Xander Schauffele, who shot 63 in the final round to vault up the leaderboard and finish one ahead of Scottie Scheffler, the man he’s locked with in an increasingly tight race for Player of the Year .
