9 of The Most Magical Santa Experiences in Yorkshire (2022)

  • By Alexis Wilson-Barrett

santa experiences in yorkshire

For many of us, Christmas is the most enjoyable time of year. However, no matter how much one loves the festive season, Christmas as an adult is incomparable to Christmas as a child. Innocent minds and young imaginations revel in the magic of this time of year and despite how commercialised we may think Christmas has become, it is children who make this time of year more special than any other. Even if we cannot regain those feelings and emotions we experienced during our own childhoods, witnessing the wonder and excitement on our children’s and grandchildren’s faces at Christmas is a true blessing.

For those wanting to make magical memories with their little ones, Yorkshire offers plenty of opportunities to do so. For kids, it’s all about the jolly old man in the bright red suit and each and every town and city across the county will be offering encounters of some kind or another.

We’ve put together a list of the most magical Santa experiences in Yorkshire that will help you create some lasting memories of the most wonderful time of the year. Each includes excellent entertainment, an enchanting atmosphere and of course…a meeting with St Nick!

Cannon Hall Farm is one of the county’s most popular family attractions, offering animal encounters and endless fun for children. At Christmas, this superb farm park offers a wonderful Santa experience which includes all-day farm entry. For 2022, Cannon Hall Farm has teamed up with Talegate Theatre Productions and the Copycat Party Company to create a unique and immersive Santa experience.

Sit back and enjoy a delightful show entitled ‘Santa’s Magic Button’, during which children will help one of Santa’s elves save Christmas. The very naughty Jack Frost has stolen Santa’s magic button and Elfie needs everyone’s help to persuade him to return it. After the show, children will get to meet Santa’s elves and then they will be invited to visit the toy factory where they can choose their own gift from Santa. If that’s not enough magic for one day, ticket holders can finish their experience with a visit to Cannon Hall Farm and say hello to the reindeer!

The ticket price for children over the age of two is £16.95 and the price includes access to the Santa Show and a gift from the toy factory. Tickets must be booked online in advance and there’s a £1 booking fee per ticket

Okay, so the tickets for the immersive “Father Christmas and Friends” experience are a little more expensive than most Santa experiences in Yorkshire but this promises to be a truly magical one! Ticket holders will join Mr & Mrs Claus in their preparations for Christmas and all children with paid-for tickets will receive a special gift. A wonderful, theatrical event that the whole family will adore and likely, never forget. The Christmas experience at Mother Shipton’s Cave offers a somewhat different way in which to see Father Christmas, but it’s magical nonetheless. Upon arrival, Santa’s elves will provide each child with a festive activity pack before they head into Santa’s grotto for that special meeting. There will be opportunities to capture those magical moments on camera and each child will receive a gift from Santa during the grotto visit. If you’re looking for a Santa experience in Yorkshire that will take up a full morning or afternoon then do consider this one. Mother Shipton’s Cave will be offering plenty of fun for children during their visit. They’ll be able to create their own bag of reindeer food, listen to stories told by the very charming Holly Berry, place a special wish upon the Christmas tree and pen their very own letter to Santa before visiting the cave and well.

This one is great for all those who still believe in the magic of Christmas and will provide a number of opportunities to create lasting memories. For the full experience, visitors will need to purchase a Christmas park admission ticket for £33 (this admits up to 5 people) in addition to a Santa experience ticket at £10.

santa at stockeld park

Where: Stockeld Park, Wetherby LS22 4AN When: November 19th 2022 – December 24th 2022 Price: £13 pp for Santa’s Grotto

What better location for an encounter with Santa than an enchanted forest adorned with dazzling lights and bursting with play opportunities? Each year, this popular tourist attraction transforms into a Winter wonderland complete with a fun family ice rink, and snowflake maze comprising endless wintery twists and turns.

This year, Santa will arrive at Stockeld Park on 19th November with a glittering parade through the magnificent Enchanted Forest. After that, he will take up residence in his forest grotto ready to meet and greet excited children. Tickets for the grotto visit can be purchased for £13 but are only available when booked alongside a forest & maze or illuminations-only ticket. This is by far one of the most popular Santa experiences in Yorkshire so we recommend booking well in advance to avoid missing out.

Dining with Santa at Carlton Towers

Santa experiences in Yorkshire

Where: High Street, Carlton, Goole DN14 9LZ When: Brunch with Santa – 23rd & 24th December, Sunday Lunch with Santa, Prices: £30 per adult, £20 per child for Brunch with Santa, £45 per adult and £25 per child for Sunday Lunch with Santa

Carlton Towers is a historic stately home near Goole boasting grand architecture, breathtaking interiors and beautiful grounds; the perfect setting for a memorable festive day out. This year, there are two fabulous experiences on offer – Brunch with Santa and Sunday Lunch with Santa.

Priced at £30 for adults and £20 for children, Brunch with Santa is available on the mornings of 23rd and 24th December. The price includes a one-course brunch in one of their beautifully decorated festive staterooms and a fireside visit to Santa. Brunch options include a Full English, Smoked Chicken Benedict, Pancakes with Maple Syrup and Bacon plus many more. All are served with additional pastries and toast plus a glass of Bucks Fizz for the grown-ups.

Santa Sunday Lunch is available on the 4th, 11th and 18th of December. This one costs slightly more at £45 for adults and £25 per child but you get three delicious courses plus the all-important fireside time with Santa who will present each child with a special gift.

With roaring log fires, 20ft high Christmas trees and stunning surroundings, this is certainly one the adults will love as much as the kids!

Father Christmas at Bolton Abbey

Santa experiences in Yorkshire

Where: Bolton Abbey, Skipton, North Yorkshire BD23 6EX When: November 26th to December 22nd Prices: 26/27 November – £25, 3/4/10/11 December – £28, 17/18/19/20/21/22 December £32 (Prices per child – all children visiting Santa must have tickets including babies) Tickets for accompanying adults and older children are £10 each.

Father Christmas will be returning to the picturesque Bolton Abbey near Skipton at the end of November and is set to stay until 22nd December. Enter Strid Wood to discover a charming Christmas village where elves await to take you on an enchanting journey to meet Father Christmas. This is another Santa experience in Yorkshire offering much more than a quick grotto encounter. The location is stunning and they do a tremendous job transforming Strid Wood into a magical wonderland.

The price varies depending on the date and includes two craft activities and a musical activity, which the children will do with the cheeky elves before they visit Santa to get their gifts. The Christmas Village experience is exclusive to ticket holders so if you want to visit you definitely need to book. Parking is in the Riverside car park and the village is a 15-minute walk away. Although there will be some shelters available, most of this is entirely outdoors so wrap up warm and wear comfy shoes!

Santa Underground at National Coal Mining Museum

santa experiences in Yorkshire

Where: Caphouse Colliery, New Road, Overton, Wakefield WF4 4RH When: November 26th – December 24th 2022 Prices: Children £10, Adults £8 plus £2 booking fee and VAT (Please note that ticket prices are priced £1 higher for visits on Christmas Eve)

A more unusual Santa experience in Yorkshire is on offer at one of the best museums in Yorkshire , the National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield. From November 26th to December 24th, Santa will be 140m underground in a unique and atmospheric grotto. One of the more budget-friendly Santa experiences in Yorkshire, this one is priced at just £10 per child which we think is really reasonable. Travel underground with your children and see whether or not the special bell will place your little ones on the nice list. Those on the list will receive a gift from Santa but those troublesome little monkeys who find themselves on the naughty list will receive a lump of coal instead. It sounds rather brutal but it’s all a bit of humourous fun and no child will leave disappointed!

Santa Sundays at Alexander’s, Skipton

places to visit santa yorkshire

Where: 4-6 High Street, Skipton BD23 1JZ When: Every Sunday in December and plus every day from 19th December to 24th December Prices: £15.00 per child OR £170 for the full family package with Off Piste dining experience (£36 per extra child under 14, £52 per additional adult)

Foodies will love this Santa experience in Yorkshire! As a resident of Skipton, I have dined at Alexander’s on numerous occasions. This wonderful venue boasts elegant interiors, a large contemporary terrace area overlooking the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and a range of wonderful dining options including one of the best afternoon teas in Skipton . Each year, Alexander’s installs a delightful pop-up Alpine lodge on the bottom section of their terrace and it’s absolutely wonderful! I visited the very first year and have lasting memories of the festive ambience and fabulous food.

This year, families of four ( 2 adults and 2 children) can combine the Alpine Lodge experience with a magical visit from Santa on each Sunday in December and every day from the 19th until the 24th. Cosy up in their heated lodge, tuck into a variety of indulgent dishes, enjoy craft activities and await your very special visit from Santa. The menu sounds absolutely superb! Flame-grilled Frankfurters, Braised Short Rib Mac N Cheese, Alpine Pizza, Roast Parsnip Soup, Chocolate Fondue plus many more will be served to your group to help you celebrate the start of the festive season in the most delicious way.

The full experience costs £170 for four people but additional group members may be added. Individual visits to Santa can also be booked by those who don’t want to book the full Alpine Lodge experience. For this, it’s £15 per child and each will receive a gift.

23rd november – 23rd december 2024 (selected dates).

Once on board, you’ll be greeted warmly by one of Santa’s good friends, Mary Christmas or Ernie/Ellie the Elf, who will show you to your reserved seating, ready for our magical departure! Santa doesn’t let us say too much more about what happens next, as that would spoil the magic, but we can guarantee that Santa Claus himself will find his way aboard and the whole family will have the most wonderful time on board – there’s a reason why families come back year after year to experience this truly fabulous festive treat, after all…

Lightwater Valley Christmas

Burton Agnes Hall, Nr Bridlington

There were lots of Christmas related events happening at Burton Agnes Hall last Christmas.

We’re thrilled to announce that our Christmas opening will run from Tuesday 14th November to Saturday 23rd December, from 11am until 5pm daily. The house will be decorated with original, handmade decorations, with many crafted from flowers and foliage cropped and dried from the walled garden. This year, dried hops and statice from the walled garden will adorn the Great Hall. Helichrysums, echiums, teasels, eucalyptus and bamboo from the garden, and the hydrangea flowers that encircle the house in autumn, will be brought indoors, too. There will be many pieces crafted in card, paper and other recycled and sustainable materials.

There will be a trail of giant, hand-carved and painted candy canes in the woodland behind the house. With 24 giant canes – one for each day of advent – hidden in the branches, will you be able to find them all?

Young visitors are particularly welcome, and can find a handmade felt snowman doll hidden in each room by the Cunliffe-Lister children. When dusk falls, Christmas cheer flourishes: with Christmas-light-strewn topiary bushes, the fireplaces glowing warmly and twinkling lights in each room, visitors will be inspired with the abundant joys of Christmas.

We will be serving wood fired pizzas, spiced hot drinks, home baked cakes and lots of other treats, and the gift shop will have beautiful Christmas decorations and gifts for sale.

[I will update this post with suggestions of where to visit Father Christmas in Leeds in 2024 as information & reviews become available!]

I think there’s something special about picking somewhere to visit Father Christmas year in, year out and making a tradition of it – it helps to retain the magic in my opinion! We’ve gone to the same place every year and the kids would find it ever so strange if we broke ranks and went somewhere different!

It has to be said, visiting Father Christmas this year is going to be more expensive than ever – as I’ve been researching this post I’ve noticed that most places have increased their prices from last year (some more than others). I balked at paying out the best part of £130 for our Father Christmas visit last year and told the kids that we wouldn’t be visiting again despite having been going for the best part of 12 years. It’s been another tough year and I think we all deserve a bit of festive sparkle but there’s definitely value in budgeting and planning ahead for your Christmas experiences this year.

If you haven’t decided where to take the kids to see Father Christmas yet this year, now is the time to make plans. The best experiences book up early, so it pays to be prepared.

If you’re looking for places to see Santa in Leeds and the surrounding area this festive season, why not take a look at some of the suggestions below:

The Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park  – The Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park – Saturday 18th November to Sunday 24th December 2023

This is our personal favourite and, whilst it’s not strictly in Leeds but it’s definitely one of the best places to visit Father Christmas in Yorkshire!

Fans of a traditional Santa’s Grotto are in for a treat at Stockeld Park where a cosy, rustic wooden cabin, decked with twinkling lights, awaits Santa’s arrival from Lapland. Stockeld Park’s famous adventure season includes The Snowflake Maze and Winter Illuminations in the award-winning Enchanted Forest. There are also options to add on ice skating, a festive pantomime and a nordic ski trail.

Tickets must be booked online this year at www.stockeldpark.co.uk . Pricing at Stockeld Park has become increasingly complicated and expensive in recent years and has changed again since our visit last Christmas! When we first started going you could pay about £10 for each child to see Father Christmas and everything else was an add on – now everyone attending the park needs a ticket, which if you want to see Father Christmas, costs at least £20 per person but includes the Winter Illuminations etc. I recommend you check out their ticket guide to see exactly what each package offers before booking.

9 Of The Best & Most Wholesome Christmas Markets To Visit In Yorkshire For 2023

9 Of The Best & Most Wholesome Christmas Markets To Visit In Yorkshire For 2023

It’s that time of year again! This weekend most Christmas markets across Yorkshire are kicking off and we’ve put together the best Christmas markets for you to visit over the festive period. Some of the greatest Christmas markets in the UK are right here on our doorstep in good ol’ Yorkshire . Here’s a rundown of just some of the markets to add to your list this year.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas (even though its hardly even Halloween yet), and us Yorkshiremen are getting right in the spirit of it. So, of course, like little children waiting for Santa to arrive, we’ve done the hard work for you and found the best Christmas markets to visit in Yorkshire this year.

1. York Christmas Market

View this post on Instagram A post shared by THOR'S tipi bar (@thorstipi)

If there’s one place in Yorkshire that screams Christmas, it’s York. From its quaint architecture to its medieval streets, you can’t get more wholesome than a day out in the Viking Capital.

The traditional fair, known as the St. Nicholas Christmas Fayre, sees traders pitched up along Parliament Street, showcasing some of the best locally sourced produce and independent sellers the city has to offer.

If that wasn’t enough to sway you, it’s grown and Thor’s Tipi will be taking over Museum Gardens and the popular Nutcracker trail is also back across the city. York Christmas Market will return 18th November to 23rd December.

2. Sheffield Christmas Market

places to visit santa yorkshire

Growing year-on-year, Sheffield’s Christmas market offering has become a huge annual event, with over 50 stalls across Fargate, Town Hall Square and Peace Gardens (the home of an incredible gift-shaped light installation each Christmas!).

This year includes an Alpine Bar where shoppers can head over for seasonal beverages, as well as the traditional German Sausage Grill, a pizza bar and churro stop if you’re feeling a bit peckish.

Kids can head over to Santa’s Grotto to meet Santa himself, with a photo-opp and gift for each child. And if you feel like getting away from the bustle of the festivities? You can jump on Sheffield’s own Big Wheel while looking over the pretty Christmas lights.  Sheffield Christmas Market opens on November 12th-throughout December.

3. Beverley Festival of Christmas  – best christmas markets yorkshire

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Beverley (@beverley_uk)

One of the largest Christmas events in the UK, the Beverley Festival of Christmas is back this year, with over 120 stalls in attendance.

The one-day event will feature four Victorian market locations across the town, with a range of entertainment including carol singing, a festive parade, Pantomime performances, fair rides, and even a visit to Santa’s Grotto where kids can pick up a gift and meet the man himself.

There’ll be plenty to eat and drink, with stalls ranging from food, hand-crafted items to festive gifts. The perfect choice for Christmas markets in Yorkshire for all the family.

If that wasn’t all, Beverley is home to a number of fantastic pubs, such as the iconic White Horse Inn (known as Nellie’s to us locals), and the cosy King’s Head. The Beverley Festival of Christmas is back on December 10th.

4. Knaresborough Christmas Market – best christmas markets yorkshire

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Knaresborough Online (@knaresborough_online)

Knaresborough is undeniably one of the prettiest places in Yorkshire, so it’s not surprising to us that it’s also lovely at Christmas.

Hosting a weekend of festivities every year, with an array of market stalls taking over the town stocking wonderful Yorkshire produce – including meats and cheeses from the Dales, handmade gifts, proper butcher’s shop pork pies and so much more.

If that wasn’t all, this year, guests can expect a roster of live entertainment, alongside a mulled wine hut, an Elf hunt for the kids and a decadently decorated Courtyard to admire. Knaresborough Christmas Market will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of December.

5. Christmas Markets at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Yorkshire Wildlife Park (@yorkshirewildlifepark)

Christmas at Doncaster’s Yorkshire Wildlife Park is pretty unbeatable, with organisers pulling out all the stops for the annual occasion.

Hosting not only a magical animal-themed light trail within the grounds, guests can also enjoy a wholesome Christmas market, where they can shop wonderful festive-themed gifts and food items, alongside the park’s ever-improving Yorkshire Hive.

At the Hive, visitors will discover a fun play barn for the kids, as well as the new Evolution dining experience, which sees dinosaurs roaring on throughout the restaurant, hiding behind pre-historic trees and stones. The experience is fantastic for kids, and one sure to elevate any Christmas visit this year. Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s Christmas Markets return 2nd-3rd, 9th-10th, and 16th-17th December.

6. Skipton Christmas Market

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Katy Muirhead (@katy_muirhead)

It’s no secret that Skipton is one of The Yorkshireman’s favourite towns. In fact, we visit frequently – particularly for Christmas. Boasting tons of traders throughout the bustling market town, guests can start and finish their Christmas shopping with plenty of independent gift stalls there to browse.

In addition to shopping, enjoy a wide variety of delicious Yorkshire-made grub, fantastic Christmas-themed entertainment, and plenty of stunning pubs and restaurants in the centre (if you have room left after scranning all the market grub, that is!). The market will take place on both December 3rd and December 10th.

7. Malton Christmas Food Market

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tom Naylor-Leyland (@tominmalton)

Yorkshire’s Food Capital, Malton, is the perfect place to visit at Christmas – with not one, but two market days planned this year for guests to enjoy.

Sticking with the foodie theme, guests can expect a festive twist on the town’s monthly food market, with over 100 stalls of Christmassy treats, locally-made produce, and non-food related gifts, too.

Adding to the spectacle, guests will also be able to enjoy live music and entertainment, alongside choirs, fairground rides and a land train for the kids. Visit the Christmas markets this year on the 2nd and 3rd December.

8. Whitby Christmas Festival

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sarah (@sarahelizabeth2013)

Consisting of an array of wonderful food and gift traders, the Whitby Christmas Festival is particularly special – bringing a unique air to Christmas that can only be found on the coast.

The town’s nautical heritage and traditional festivities merge for just three days only, bringing the very best local street food and handmade items and crafts to the historic town’s streets.

While the annual festival usually includes spectacular events such as an entertainment marquee, festival stage, street theatre or lantern parade, this year’s event will take place on a smaller scale – putting a focus on the shopping element for this year’s Christmas celebration. Whitby Christmas Market will return 17th to 18th November.

9. Pocklington Christmas Market – best christmas markets yorkshire

best christmas markets yorkshire

The picturesque market town of Pocklington in East Yorkshire is hosting its first European-style Christmas market with a whole host of festive cheer heading its way.

For one weekend only Pocklington Christmas market is set to host 70 stalls of various crafts, food producers, and traders offering truly unique gifts for the perfect bit of festive cheer. Pocklington Christmas Market will take place from 16th and 17th of December

The 10 most beautiful places in Yorkshire

The 10 most beautiful places in Yorkshire

As someone who is Yorkshire born and bred, I’ll be the first to admit that I may be biased when I say it is the most beautiful region in the country. But I think the evidence is strongly in my favour. Whether you like rugged coastlines, manicured gardens , blustery moorland or architectural wonders, the four areas that make up Yorkshire have each one in abundance. Finding the most striking places in God’s Own Country is a borderline-impossible task, but there are some parts, both illustrious and not so well known, that stand out from the rest. If you're on the hunt for more, yet lesser-known areas, then look at our guide to the best places to visit Yorkshire .

Knaresborough

Built into a deep gorge, with a viaduct and its own clifftop castle, the North Yorkshire market town of Knaresborough is attractive from any angle – though the best way to see it might be relaxing in a rowing boat on the pretty River Nidd. It is easily possible to spend a day exploring the stairways embedded in the rockface, strolling through the cobbled passageways and shopping in the quaint square, but Knaresborough has a quirky side too. It’s home to Mother Shipton’s Cave, whose Petrifying Well is the oldest attraction in England where objects are slowly turned to stone by water rich in sulphate and carbonate.

The undulating, sheep-flecked landscape of Swaledale is no doubt what most people picture when they think of Yorkshire. Located in one of the most northerly and remote parts of the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park , it is almost luxurious in its authenticity. There are no large towns, but old villages such as the entertainingly named Gunnerside, Muker and Crackpot are set among the rolling dales, providing enticing tearooms and cosy pubs . The views are so stunning that even the least skilled photographer can come away with professional-looking snapshots of verdant pastures, weathered dry-stone walls and glowing buttercup meadows.

You’d be hard-pressed to find an inch of Yorkshire shoreline that isn’t bewitching, but Whitby will always edge out the competition with its ruined abbey and historic whale-bone arch. The North Yorkshire town is part of the Cleveland Way, a magnificent national trail which takes in a huge portion of the region’s coast, including seductive villages such as Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and the North York Moors. Whitby is already in perfect balance, where classic waterside charm meets gaudy arcades, sweet shops and some of the UK’s best fish and chips , but the town is also peppered with unique curiosities including the 199 Steps, the lighthouse and jewellers specialising in Whitby jet, an opaque, black precious gemstone.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

The juxtaposition of modern art and the landscaped gardens of Bretton Park is what makes this West Yorkshire exhibition space exceptional. Home to some of the finest works by regional sculptors Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Damien Hirst, as well as those from international artists, the park offers an open-air feast of magnetic, and often surprising, creations. Elegant buildings on the site include the Underground Gallery, an award-winning piece of sustainable architecture that is almost hidden, recessed into the sloped lawn, and the Weston Visitor Centre, with its impressive glass frontage and wildflower roof, which is a lovely spot for tea and cake.

Ilkley Moor

The wild and rugged natural beauty of Ilkley Moor is legendary, not just as the inspiration for the Yorkshire folk song ‘On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at’, but for the imposing and instantly recognisable Cow and Calf rocks. The views across miles of history-steeped towns and green rolling hills are arresting at any time of year but the place is especially resplendent in late summer when the entire moor is enriched by lush purple heather. Understandably, Ilkley has been a travel destination for centuries, perhaps even millennia – eagle-eyed visitors will spot Neolithic carvings and can visit the White Wells, a Victorian plunge pool .

Wentworth Castle Gardens

Frequently popping up in television period dramas , the Grade I-listed Wentworth Woodhouse is one of the largest houses in Europe and has the longest façade of any British country home . The sprawling Barnsley estate, though perhaps not as well known as its high-profile Yorkshire neighbours Harewood House and Castle Howard, is no less stunning. While the house is captivating, the real beauty lies in Wentworth Castle Gardens, an enchanting mix of outdoor surprises set across 60 acres. This includes the tranquil Victorian flower garden, the ruined Stainborough Castle folly, some of the finest parkland and wildlife-abundant woodland in the area – and even a lake.

Humber Street and The Deep

Hull has seen its reputation lifted in recent years thanks to investments that have revitalised neglected parts of the city. One of those was Humber Street, now a thriving independent-retail hub and an urban-renewal success story. The thoroughfare, at the heart of the famous Fruit Market district, is now adorned with colourful murals . Adjacent to Humber Street is The Deep aquarium, one of the most architecturally striking buildings in the UK . Reminiscent of a shark projecting out of the Humber Estuary, the glass and aluminium structure is a modern classic, even earning a place on a Royal Mail postage stamp.

There’s no greener town in Yorkshire than Beverley. The centre bumps up against acres of pasture known as Beverley Westwood and, in recent years, it has been a Britain in Bloom finalist and Yorkshire in Bloom award winner. But the East Yorkshire town also has particularly attractive architecture, from the stark and dignified former windmill known as the Black Mill to the grandeur of Beverley Minster, where, from the top of its towers, there are mesmerising panoramas across the flat greenery of the East Riding.

Yorkshire Three Peaks

Each one of these three adjacent mountains has its own individual character. Pen-y-ghent is the lowest, followed by dramatic Ingleborough, with its steep ridges jutting out from the landscape, while smooth Whernside is deceptively the tallest at 2,415ft. On a clear day, the views across the Yorkshire Dales are invigorating and include the 1312ft Ribblehead Viaduct, a masterful feat of Victorian engineering. Less well known is the UK’s highest unbroken waterfall on the south side of Ingleborough, the Gaping Gill. The underground chamber is also the largest in Britain with a natural opening and is big enough to fit a cathedral inside.

Walking around York is like taking several big steps back in time as a layer of history is unpeeled at every turn, from the grand Victorian train station to the Norman castle, the ruined Benedictine abbey to the city walls originally built by the Romans. However, two very different locations draw the biggest crowds. One of those, as you’d expect, is the jaw-dropping Gothic splendour of York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in northern Europe. The other is the more understated Shambles, a charming almost-caricature of a medieval street with atmospheric overhanging buildings and maze-like alleyways.

15 Best Places to Visit in South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire was conquered by the coal and steel industries in the 18th and 19th centuries, and after these activities faded the region had to find a new path.

For Sheffield that path is education, culture and a fertile live music scene.

Around the county you have the moors, dales and fells of the peak district to the west and lots of enthralling relics from the time when South Yorkshire led world for innovation and manufacturing.

Decades after the mines closed down nature has started taking over once more.

See “flashes”, wetlands caused by subsidence around rivers, and many of these man-made phenomena are protected bird sanctuaries or country parks.

Lets explore the best places to visit in South Yorkshire :

1. Sheffield

Sheffield

If there’s  a model for how to be a post-industrial city Sheffield would definitely be in the running.

After a couple of decades of regeneration the centre is creative, fun and young, full of nightlife and culture.

Some of this dynamism is owed to Sheffield’s large university population, but also sights like the Millennium Galleries and the fabulous Winter Garden, which was unveiled in 2003. And then there’s the time-honoured institutions like the Crucible Theatre, which has welcomed the World Snooker Championship since the 1970s.

Steel is still manufactured around Sheffield, and there are also well-preserved mills and machinery at Kelham Island and the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet.

2. Doncaster

Doncaster, England

Any British town with the “caster” suffix was once a Roman fortress so this applies to Doncaster.

The town lies on a large coal seam and this attracted industry starting in the 1700s, though there are many strings to Doncaster’s bow.

One of these is aviation, made clear at the Vulcan Experience, showcasing the Avro Vulcan, which was assembled in Doncaster, and the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum, a trove of 20th-century helicopters and planes at a former RAF hangar.

If you’re around in late-summer two of England’s most valuable races on the flat are run at the historic Doncaster Racecourse; the St Leger Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy.

3. Barnsley

Barnsley Town Hall

Coal-mining and glassmaking were the foundations of the economy in Barnsley, but after the last local pit closed in the 90s the town staged an economic recovery and has enough to keep you occupied for a day or so.

A lot of the allure lies in the grand estates and country parks close to the town, some of which we’ll cover later.

The big monument in Barnsley is the town hall, which was completed in 1932 and is large enough to be seen from the undulating hillsides miles outside the town.

There’s a high-quality social history museum inside, conveying the mining heritage that disappeared in the space of a couple of decades.

Monday to Saturday, call in at Barnsley’s market, which has been running since the 14th century and has more than 300 stalls.

4. Rotherham

Rotherham, England

Coal, iron, steel, pottery and glass: These were the industries that caused Rotherham to expand in the 1700s, but the town had been a significant place for centuries before that.

Rotherham Bridge will illustrate this fact nicely; the structure over the River Don was built in 1483 and is rare in the UK as a chapel is an integral part of the structure.

To get your head around Rotherham go to the Clifton Museum, where the town’s industry will be laid bare and there’s a big display of the prized Rockingham pottery which was fashioned in local kilns.

5. Peak District

Peak District

Sheffield is billed as the eastern gateway to the Peak District National Park, which covers a majestic and sparsely populated upland region.

In these northern stretches of the park you’ll journey into barren sandstone moorland, which has a wild and desolate allure that brings Wuthering Heights to mind.

There will be rugged sandstone walls delineating pasture, dales dotted with sheep and lots of remote hamlets and villages where time seems to have stood still.

Sheffield has road and train links delivering you to the park in a matter of minutes.

6. Wentworth

Wentworth Woodhouse

North of Rotherham, Wentworth is a beautiful village of sandstone cottages and imposing houses, some clad with ivy.

A lot of the buildings on Main Street are listed, and many are restaurants, pubs and local village shops.

The village has been here since the 11th century, and ever-present throughout this time has been the Holy Trinity Church, now in an arresting state of semi -ruin.

But the headline attraction is the jaw-dropping Wentworth Woodhouse, a stunning 18th-century country estate that melds English baroque with Palladian design.

You won’t be surprised to hear that a host of period TV shows and films have been shot in this noble setting.

7. Cawthorne

Cannon Hall farm

Cawthorne has all the essentials of an English rural village, with a pretty medieval church, a pub tea room and manor house.

The local stately home, Cannon Hall is a gorgeous Georgian pile that wouldn’t look out of place in a Jane Austen period drama.

In the ballroom, dining room, library and drawing room there’s sumptuous period furniture by some of the 18th-century’s most lauded craftsmen like Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite.

Bring the kids to Cannon Hall farm where you can watch state-of-the art farming machinery at work, and see tractors trundling around like any other day.

The best time to visit is in spring when hundreds of baby animals are born, and you’ll get to see Shetland pony and donkey foals, as well as piglets and lambs.

8. Woodlands

Woodlands

Preserved as a conservation area just north of Doncaster, Woodlands is a model village, built at the turn of the century  for miners at Brodsworth Colliery.

The Model Village Movement came about at the end of the 19th century, as industrialists realised the benefit of giving their workforce more desirable places to live.

At Woodlands there’s generous green in six hectares hemmed by some 120 houses.

These were devised to face the greenery rather than other houses as they would a typical industrial residential street.

9. Sprotbrough and Cusworth

Cusworth Hall

This parish a short way west of Doncaster has three individual villages and some pristine expanses of countryside to recharge those batteries.

The Spotbrough Flash is a soothing patchwork of wetland, meadows and ash and sycamore woods on a limestone ridge.

In grassy areas there’s a sea of wildflowers like cowslips and orchids in summer.

The grounds of Cusworth Hall are dreamy too, with a serpentine lake with ducks and a glorious Georgian mansion at the top of the rise, designed by James Paine, one of the country’s foremost architects of the day.

The interior is a museum that shows how Doncastrians, rich and not so rich, lived in days gone by.

10. High Bradfield

Bradfield Church, High Bradfield

This endearing little village is set within the boundary of the Peak District, in hilly scenery with vistas over the Bradfield Dale to the Derwent Edge escarpment and a massive sweep of the Dark Peak.

Nestling in pasture for sheep grazing, it’s a given that High Bradfield should be fine walking territory, and there’s some fascinating stuff to discover minutes on foot from the village.

One is Bailey Hill, which has all the signs of a Normal motte and bailey fortress, while Castle Hill was once a Saxon camp.

In the village, the Church of St Nicholas is one of a select few Grade I-listed buildings in the Sheffield region.

It takes full advantage of the majestic location and has a Saxon cross in its nave from the year 800.

11. Penistone

Penistone

The likeable market town of Penistone is the highest in Yorkshire, at over 220 metres.

Here on the western side of the county, at the edge of the Pennines, the countryside starts to get dramatic.

There are five superb local walks starting in Penistone, entering a landscape of arable farms and pasture grazed by the hardy whitefaced woodland sheep.

And there will always be a pub close by for a meal or leisurely pint.

For people in need of outdoor seclusion you have the empty moorland around the Langsett Reservoir where you could stroll for hours and hardly meet a soul.

In the town see the Church of St John the Baptist, with a 16th-century tower and a nave and chancel that could be as old as the 11th century.

12. Elsecar

Elsecar Heritage Railway Centre

In rolling countryside between Rotherham and Barnsley, the village of Elsecar witnessed coal-mining activity from the 15th century to the 1980s.

Despite and maybe because of that history Elsecar has a lot of personality, on streets with old stone cottages and the converted vestiges of the mines’ outbuildings and iron forges.

At the Elsecar Heritage Centre are restored cobblestone streets and workshops that still have machinery to keep industrial historians riveted: The 18th-century Newcomen Beam Engine dates to 1795 and was designed to extract water from coal pits to allow for deeper exploration.

You could linger at the heritage centre for a good while, pottering around the sweet independent shops and taking a ride on the mile-long Elsecar Heritage Railway.

13. Worsbrough

Worsbrough Mill

A diffuse cluster of villages in dramatic countryside, Worsbrough has been settled since the 600s and was mentioned in the Domesday Book in the 11th century.

Worsbrough Mill on the River Dove is a working flour mill that still has both its water-powered mechanism that goes back to the 1600s and its 19th-century steam apparatus.

As well as offering a couple of hours of edification, the location is fabulous, within the 100-hectare Worsbrough Country Park.

Following the course of the former railway line through Worsbrough is a length of the Trans Pennine Trail, which spans both coasts in northern England.

Pause a moment at the 12th-century Church of St Mary, which has a mass grave for the 75 victims of the Darley Main Colliery disaster in 1849.

14. High Hoyland

High Hoyland

A destination for a whirlwind visit, but one you’re sure to recall fondly, High Hoyland is a tiny hillside village northwest of Barnsley.

You’ll know why you came when you’re sitting in front of the Cherry Tree Inn and staring dumbstruck at the views down to Cannon Hall and then Barnsley in the distance.

You can park up and join a footpath to spend a little more time in this wonderful setting; there’s a old bridleway that runs along the ridge above the village.

Just up the road from High Hoyland is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park with works by Barbara Hepworth and one of the largest sets of Henry Moore’s bronzes anywhere.

Parish Church of St. Nicholas Thorne, Thorne England

The market town of Thorne has a few interesting stories to tell and some rare wilderness to navigate.

Thorne was a marshy region until the Dutchman Cornelius Vermuyden helped create polders (reclaimed farmland) in the 1600s by plotting a system of dykes.

You can see how the landscape once looked at the Humberhead Peatlands National Nature Reserve, more than 2,800 hectares of bogs and woods supporting more than 5,000 plant and animal species.

Birds like ringed plovers, lapwings and oystercatchers are all to be seen and heard in summer.

Inside Thorne, stretch your legs on the tow path of the Stainforth and Keadby canal and bring the little guys to the miniature that runs in summer at Thorne Park.
