Follow along as we fill you in on everything you should know in preparation for a day trip to Popeye Village.

Popeye Village in Malta.

The History Of Popeye Village

Popeye Village , also known as Sweethaven Village, is located in Anchor Bay on the coast of Mellieha, Malta. Popeye Village was the film set of the 1980 production of Popeye — a live-action reimagining of the spinach-eating, pipe-smoking sailor so many of us know and love.

When construction began in 1979, logs were imported from Holland and the shingles on the rooftops were imported all the way from Canada to create the 19 wooden buildings that make up the village. The creation of the massive film set required a construction crew of 165 people and seven months of intensive work.

The film was produced by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions. Popeye starred big-name actors like Robin Williams as Popeye and Shelley Duvall as Popeye’s love interest, Olive Oyl.

Filming wrapped nearly 40 years ago. Since then, Popeye Village has transformed from a neglected film set to a theme park fit for the whole family.

What You Can Do There

When you enter the theme park, you’ll be greeted by costumed Popeye characters who will entertain you as you explore.

Popeye Village isn’t known for its grand size, but there’s still plenty to do. During your day trip, you can meander through a small museum that guides you through the history of the comics and watch a short documentary about the filming process. Then enjoy a drink at the winery, where you can admire the sea in all its shimmery-blue splendor. For dinner, grab a bite to eat at Seafarers Bar and Restaurant in the park.

If you visit during the warmer months, you can take a 20-minute boat ride around Anchor Bay. During the holiday season, Popeye Village opens Santa’s Toytown — a Christmas celebration featuring elves assembling presents.

There’s something to do year-round, and the whole experience is family friendly!

Explore The Village

Popeye village has grown from its days as the 1980's film set to one of malta's major tourist attractions..

'Popeye Village Malta', the Film Set of the 1980 Musical Production “Popeye”, also known as 'Popeye Village' today is one of Malta's major tourist attractions. The film set was constructed in Anchor Bay during the last 7 months of 1979.

To construct this authentic wooden village, tree trunk logs were trailered overland from Holland, and wood shingles, used in the construction of the roof tops, were imported all the way from Canada. A 165 international construction crew consumed eight tons of nails and two thousand gallons of paint to finish off this massive Set.

No less than 20 wooden structures had to be built. Before construction could begin, an access road leading to the Set had to be constructed. Also, Anchor Bay needed a 200-250 foot Breakwater at its mouth, to protect the Set from high seas during the shooting months of the Film Production. Filming commenced on the 23rd of January, 1980.

Popeye the Sailor Man cartoon character was introduced by Elzie Segar in 1929 in a comic strip named “Thimble Theatre”. After numerous successful Popeye cartoon strips and features loved by fans worldwide the decision to make a film was taken in the mid 1970’s. The musical film was based on a story written by Jules Fieffer, directed by Robert Altman and produced by Robert Evans. The Production Film Company was Lions Gate Films and the Distributors were Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions.

The story relates to Popeye, a muscled one-eyed spinach loving sailor, coming to Sweet haven Village in the quest to find his father. During his time in Sweet haven Village, Popeye has many encounters with the village folk and naturally meets Olive Oyl, who was to be officially engaged to Captain Bluto. Olive Oyl as always is hesitant to get engaged and meets up with Popeye as she runs away from her own engagement party. Together they find an abandoned baby by the name of SWEE'PEA, who becomes a cupid to the unlikely pair. A courtship blossoms amongst the two loved main characters and in time Popeye does find his father. Olive Oyl is later kidnapped by the jealous captain Bluto who is in his way to steal Popeye’s father buried treasure. Popeye and gang are soon in pursuit and a final bout between Popeye and Bluto ends up by Popeye saving the day. The story ends with Popeye’s original motto: I YAM WHAT I YAM.

Transport & parking

Drive towards Mellieha and follow the signs to Anchor Bay and Popeye Village – direction towards Ghadira Bay (Mellieha Bay).

There is a gravel car park which offers plenty of parking spaces and is wheelchair accessible.

There is ample parking available that is only meters away from the reception booth.

The film set can also be reached by public transport. Take any of the following buses to (Ghadira) Mellieha Bay or Cirkewwa: X1, X1A, 41, 42, 49, 101, 221, 222 or 250. From Ghadira Bay take the bus number 101 to Mgarr which stops at Popeye Village.

A bus stop can be found just outside the premises’ gate.

If needed, taxis can be booked at reception from a local taxi company. In peak periods takes can usually be found by the reception booth too.

Inside the building (entrance, reception, ticketing area etc.)

The main entrance and ticket area are accessible by means of 3 steps or a ramp. After purchasing tickets there are five steps which are approximately 6 inches high and a ramp. The film set is accessible to all by means of a steep ramp or 30 steps which are roughly 4 inches each in height.

One must climb an average of 10 steps to enter a number of the wooden houses.

Maps are available and given to visitors at reception to allow guests to be able to explore the film set. There is also clear and pictorial signage throughout to direct visitors.

The reception desk is of around 1 meter in height and there is a small bench for seating.

Every wooden house has fire extinguishers.

Since the film set is mainly outdoors, lighting is not needed during the day as we make use of the natural sunlight. Dim lighting can be found inside each of the wooden houses. Bright light can be found in other indoor places such as the reception area and public toilets.

The flooring all over the film set is wooden or paved.  Wooden benches and handrails are available along the pathway throughout the film set.

Since flooring is paved or wooden, it does get a little slippery in the rain.

Exhibits and interpretation

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the premises for all our guests.

Verbal interpretation is available at reception or through one of the many daily guided tours by the Animation department along the film set explaining briefly the vision of the film set of the director of the 1980 movie.

Graphic interpretation is available on maps and printed material in the form of signage all along the film set which is always printed in font sizes of 14-20.

Audio interpretation is available by animators on the PA system during announcements and shows. A documentary is played on loop at the Cinema explaining how the filmset was built as well as the original movie is played continuously in the comic museum.

Information is available on information and display boards.

Public Toilets

There are public conveniences located in both the upper part and lower part of the complex.  One may find 3 male and 3 female conveniences located in the upper part of the complex and 8 female and 5 male public conveniences in the lower part of the complex these are via a 60cm wide door. Both the male and female conveniences all contain baby changing facilities. There is one wheelchair accessible toilet in the lower part of the complex and all the toilets located in the upper complex are wheelchair accessible.

The type of flooring in the toilets is non-slip tiles.

Catering Outlets

Location within the property

There are three catering outlets on the premises.

One catering outlet can be found at the top part of the complex. This is a Diner which has both indoor and outdoor seating facilities. It also hosts Malta’s largest jump around game for children.

A snack bar is available on the film set which again has both indoor and outdoor dining facilities as well as verandas facing Anchor Bay.

In summer there is also a small bar on the Bay which serves as an ice-cream parlour, beverages and also serves light snacks. It is also overlooking Anchor Bay.

Tables in each catering outlet are all movable and each have a cashier service.

The menus are available in English, clearly indicating all ingredients in each dish in font size 14.

All the catering outlets are wheelchair accessible and they provide gluten free options upon request. Thick handled cutlery is also available.

Future Plans

The village is constantly being upgraded in order to improve its tourist attraction. At the moment the film set is under going a project to transform all of the wooden houses into an attraction – at the moment final work is being carried out on the Robin Williams memorial museum.

Popeye: The Bizarre Movie Set Turned Theme Park in Malta

Journey to Malta and discover "Popeye Village," a surreal movie set turned theme park. Dive into its history and whimsy, experiencing cinematic nostalgia.

visit popeye set

When I traveled across to Malta in September 2021, little did I imagine Louise, the receptionist at my hotel, telling me to, "Visit Popeye Village." I had to ask her what Popeye Village was. She handed me a brochure, and I couldn't believe it. She said, "Popeye was filmed in Malta." I had no idea!

Popeye village

The 1980 live-action musical version of Popeye hit our screens. The movie was the first big-screen role for Robin Williams. But the film failed to take off at the box office, as it made $60 million from a budget of $20 million. Critics could not have imagined that more than 40 years on, people would still be talking about the film. That's because if you find yourself in Malta, it’s impossible to visit the country without somebody mentioning everyone’s favorite spinach-loving sailor. The film set has become a big tourist attraction that you cannot leave the country without visiting.

Malta’s Anchor Bay, not too far from the village of Mellieħa, was converted into Sweethaven, the fictional coastal setting Popeye lived in for the movie. It’s not unusual for large sets such as this to be constructed for a film, but rare for the production crew to leave without taking their work home with them.

Popeye in Popeye village

Before filming took place back in 1979, Paramount Pictures had an agreement with the Malta government that the set would remain in place after the production. Speaking to Popeye himself (one of the actors who is now dressed up playing the character in the village) told me, "The set was agreed to be left alone for possible future films. But when the film didn't do too well, the production crew never came back. Which meant the set was left here to rot."

He went on to tell me, "For years, whilst it was derelict, people would come in and take props and parts of the set as souvenirs. When you think about it now, it's unbelievable how it was just left. The authorities in charge decided to transform the set. Here we are today, a big part of Malta's landmark."

For you to get to Popeye Village, you can take a bus to Mellieħa from anywhere in the country. Although the bus doesn't stop at the village, you can take another bus to get you near the village. Your ticket bought on the bus is valid for 2 hours. You can walk it after the first bus, as it will take about 20 minutes to do so.

Once you get there, there is an entrance fee. The time I went, it was $20. When I entered and saw the buildings from afar for the first time, it was a surreal moment. Instantly, I felt the presence of being on a movie set. I couldn't believe the film was produced here. As I walked down, there was a carnival atmosphere.

When you buy your entrance ticket, the ticket gets you a free postcard from the post office and popcorn from the cinema. The cinema is at the heart of Popeye Village, which plays clips from the movie and behind-the-scenes footage. There is also another building where you can go in and watch the entire film.

Restaurant in Popeye village

The restaurant and bar are situated where the famous fight scene with Popeye was in the film. There was another cafe, but they decided to close it for now due to covid. This is likely to reopen soon. They also have a play area for kids, which includes a mini-golf course.

visit popeye set

There are sunbathing chairs for people who want to relax by the Mediterranean sea, or you can go swimming with some inflatables in their water park feature. Weather permitting, you can also catch a boat trip around Anchor Bay to get an entirely diverse perspective on the village.

As I mentioned, I spoke to one of the actors who played Popeye. There were other actors dressed as characters from the movie, including Olive Oyl, Popeye's love interest, just wandering around the attraction, which made it feel even more surreal. They were so friendly as well.

Popeye in Olive Oyl in Popeye village

Popeye Village has also become a popular venue in Malta for corporate events and private parties. Popeye once again told me, "It gets decorated during Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. School kids will have the whole place for the day to enjoy. Many people decide to have their wedding here as well. Perfect if your wedding is themed around spinach!"

Shebs in popeye village

What are my thoughts on Popeye Village? I must say it's such a unique place for film fans to visit. I can't think of many purpose-built movie sets that you can see anywhere in the world, let alone finding one as well-preserved as Sweethaven.

Malta itself has since become a popular film location but you'd be hardpressed to find a movie that has left a more lasting legacy on the country. In fact, it's hard to imagine any other blockbuster leaving such an intriguing legacy like this anywhere in the world, which is why it's such an attraction. You simply cannot travel to Malta without visiting Popeye Village.

Discover the unexpected charm of Malta with a visit to Popeye Village, a quirky theme park that's as unique as it is fun. The original Popeye film set

Constructed in 1980 the original film set consisted of over 20 individual structures. Built on the bay to make use of the water for filming, equipment was brought in from as far away as The Netherlands, primarily for a more genuine look.

Tree trunks from The Netherlands arrived to be used in the roof construction and the Popeye Village website tells me that there was over 2000 gallons of paint used on the set.

Situated in Anchor Bay, they also had to build a breakwater across the mouth of the bay to protect the village from tidal seas during filming.

Make sure you make time to get up to the viewpoint overlooking the village. Anchor bay is also a popular dive site and we saw divers in the water that day we visited. It looked WAY too cold for me but I guess wetsuits are wonderful things.

What Is There To See And Do In Popeye Village?

The village has quite a bit to see and do particularly for children.  There is:

  • a variety of shows,
  • a comic museum,
  • customised stalls and shows based on the season and time of year
  • demonstrations from artisans, and of course
  • the swimming enclosure.

They are currently working on a Robin Williams museum which was due to open in 2022, but has been delayed. Robin Williams was of course Popeye in the movie that was filmed here and they do very much embrace his larger than life personality in the village.

The swimming enclosure is called Anchor Bay Lido and is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas for you to relax and watch the kids swimming. There is also a splash pool now for those smaller children as well.

The €11 entrance fee gives you access to not just the film set but

  • a variety of shows,
  • a comic museum,
  • demonstrations from artisans, and of course
  • the swimming enclosure.

Where to Eat In Popeye Village Malta

There are cafe's and restaurants (3 I believe from memory) and all the signs and menu's are in English so its very easy to navigate. There is even a winery and cellar door tasting which was quite the hit!

We ate lunch at Seafarers Bar & Restaurant. It has a great view of the bay and our meals were lovely. There is of course a focus on seafood and the menu's change for each season.

There are boat rides around Anchor bay in the summer my friends tell me but we didn't see any go out during the time we were there. I think we might have been a bit early in the season.

Where is Popeye Village?

Popeye Village is located in Melleiha on the north west coast of Malta. It is about 25km from Valletta and should take you about half an hour to drive, dependant on traffic.

Click the map below for the exact location.

Malta's Popeye Village Is a Real-Life Film Set You Can Visit

Originally built as a film set, Popeye Village is now a tourist attraction in Malta

Editorial Manager

When a 1980s live-action musical version of Popeye failed to take off at the box office, few critics could have imagined that more than 40 years later people would still be talking about the film. If you find yourself in Malta , though, it’s impossible to spend much time on the island before the subject of everyone’s favourite spinach-loving sailor pops up.

The exact timelines are a little murky, but what we do know is that, after a lengthy production period, a vast wooden film set was built by Hollywood studio Paramount to accommodate their big-budget Popeye movie. Malta’s Anchor Bay, a few miles from the village of Mellieħa , was transformed into Sweethaven, the fictional coastal setting of the movie. It’s not uncommon for large sets such as this to be erected for the purposes of a film, but what is rare is for the production crew to leave without taking their work with them.

Popeye Village has become a popular tourist attraction

The movie was one of the first big screen roles for Robin Williams , who took on the titular character, with Olive Oyl played by Shelley Duvall, taking on her first role after the horrors of working with Stanley Kubrick on The Shining (1980).

Watching Popeye today feels like tuning into an oddity that deserves the mixed reaction it gained on release. The film was over budget and behind schedule, which reportedly led to the cast and crew leaving in a hurry once they wrapped. This also explains why the set was left behind as a relic to a troubled movie.

You can go inside the houses/sets at Popeye Village

Entrepreneurial locals, however, were quick to notice the potential of a working village built in the style of a film set. The village is great to walk around, but arguably the biggest selling point is the view of the painted house fronts and deep blue waters of the surrounding bay that you see as you drive up to Popeye Village. Ask the driver to drop you off at the viewing point rather than the entrance gates, so you can get the full measure of the absurdity of the place. Buses also run here, and you can use the excellent public transport network to easily get around the island.

The panoramic view gives you a sense of the otherworldliness if the set

There are numerous props from the movie littered around the village. Boats that don’t look like they would last more than a few minutes out on the ocean waves instead make for a colourful and vibrant talking point as you enter. To capitalise on the links to the film, there is a 40-seat cinema in the heart of Popeye Village that plays clips from the movie, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of the building of the set. What we gleaned was that it took an international construction crew of 165 people more than seven months to complete the 19 buildings used in the film. The wood used for construction was imported from the Netherlands, and shingles used for the roofs were flown in from Canada.

Film props remain in all the rooms

A breakwater was constructed at the mouth of the bay to protect the set, and the calm waters today are used to house a series of inflatables that form a water park feature. Weather permitting, you can also take a boat trip around Anchor Bay to get a completely different perspective on the village.

Actors dressed as characters from the movie can be found wandering around the attraction, and there are food stands and small rides for children, too. Popeye Village, which is referred to locally as Sweethaven, has become a popular venue in Malta, used for corporate events and private parties. You can even arrange to have your wedding here, perfect for anyone keen on having a spinach-themed ceremony!

Actors perform at Popeye Village

This really is a unique place for film fans to visit. There aren’t many purpose-built sets you can actually visit anywhere in the world, and none as well-preserved as Sweethaven spring to mind. Malta itself has gone on to become a popular film location for film and TV, but it’s hard to imagine any blockbuster of recent times leaving as much of a lasting mark on the country as this.

Popeye Village is rare, as a film set that you can still visit

Popeye Village: Everything You Need To Know

Popeye Village: Everything You Need To Know

Popeye Village, located on the northwest coast of Malta is one of the Island’s main tourist attractions. This bright and colourful village is where the 1980’s movie Popeye was filmed. Those who are old enough to remember, Popeye was played by the hilarious Robin Williams.

Popeye Village has grown from a movie set into a bright and bustling piece of the Maltese tourism industry. Nestled into a narrow cove called Anchor Bay, the village is a great day out for the family. However, things can get a little pricey.

A quick tip for visiting Popeye Village, take your own food and arrive early to get a good spot. Sunbeds are available but the best ones get taken early. The entrance fee is 14.50 Euros per person, the cost of a beer 5 Euros and a hotdog is is an outrageous 7.50 Euros.

Popeye village-Malta-guide

Another quick tip, for those who would like to see the village but do not wish to splash out the cash. From the cliff tops overlooking the village you can get a great view of Popeye Village and also  walk down to a small jetty where you can swim in the pristine cove for free. If you take your own food and drink, this is a great way to see the village and save some money.

How To Get To Popeye Village

The village is on the north coast of the Island and is very easy to reach. For those that have never been to Malta, the Island is tiny. From top to bottom is only 24 kilometers and from side to side is 16 kilometers.

As you can see, getting anywhere on an Island so small is quite easy. However, the traffic on malta is a nightmare, so a short journey in another country can take an hour here on Malta.

Also the bus timetables and routes are always changing, here is the Maltese transport website for you to make sure of your route.

Most likely if you are visiting the Island on holiday you will be staying in either St Julian’s, Sliema or Bugibba. Regular buses run along the coast which will take you north to Mellieha Bay. From here you can either walk or catch a bus the 2 kilometers to Popeye village.

We decided to walk, the  road took us through some traditional Maltese farmlands where we got to see some of the local delicacies such as prickly pears and peppers.

Popeye village-Malta

What To Expect When You Arrive

We arrived at Popeye Village with high expectations, well Dave did, Silvana has never seen the movie before. Unfortunately we did not do our research before arriving and was a little taken aback by the price. In the end we decided that we should pay the 29 Euros for our two tickets and entered the “park”.

As part of the entrance fee, also included is a free photo, a small glass of alcoholic punch, a sunbed and a postcard to send home. To be honest, the postcards are terrible and the punch is not so great. However, the free picture is a good keepsake if you can have it taken without people bustling in the background.

Popeye village-Malta

We had a look around the village, wandering up the street reading all of the funny signs and looking at the memorabilia. If you have seen the movie, walking around the village will bring back many fond memories.

Soon we found ourselves in the house of Olive, Popeyes girlfriend. We had a look around, in the back room of the house a documentary on the making of the movie was being played on a loop. We watched for a few minutes and found it quite interesting.

Things To Do In The Village

Swimming in anchor bay.

Next, with it being 30 degrees we headed down to get a sunbed next to the water. Popeye Village is built on one side of a little cove. On one side the village runs down to the water’s edge. Whereas on the opposite side there are sheer cliffs which are 30 meters high. It is from these cliffs where you can get a great view of the village if you do not wish to pay.

Popeye village-Malta

This cove is perfect for swimming and like all of the waters around Malta, it is pristinely clean and beautiful. We made our way down to the waters searching for a sunbed.

Unfortunately we arrived at around 1pm and all of the best sunbeds were taken. This is why you should arrive early. Eventually after much searching we found two on the upper decks.

Inflatable Obstacle Course

In the water there is an inflatable obstacle course which is quite cool but was very crowded. On the obstacle course there is also a trampoline, this is a great way to get rid of the children for a while. Or if you are still a child at heart, a great way to have some fun crashing into the water.

Animation Shows

Throughout the village, different animations are playing. Along with the making of the movie which is on a loop in Olive’s house, there is also a loop of the movie itself playing in an another of the colourful buildings.

Popeye village-Malta

At other spots in the village you will also see old cartoons of Popeye being shown.

For some strange reason there is also a Mini Golf course in the village, which is free to play. I think that they were running out of ideas and chucked this one in for the fun of it.

Other Things To Do

Other things to do include the silversmith demonstration, the splash pool and also a boat tour around Anchor Bay. Unfortunately the boat was broken when we visited and had been for sometime. When they plan on fixing this we do not know.

What We Really Thought Of Popeye Village

We enjoyed our visit to Popeye Village… but.

For what is on offer we think that the price is very expensive. Also it is a bit of a tourist trap, with only two restaurants which charge what they like. We paid 5 Euros for one beer and 7.50 Euros for a hotdog. You should most definitely take your own food.

Popeye village-Malta

Alos we made a mistake when visiting, we arrived at 1pm. All of the best sunbeds had been taken and we had to search about. We soon found a bed up on the top decks of the restaurant, arrive early to get a bed on the water’s edge.

Maybe visiting during the quieter months Popeye village would be much better. However, with the crowds and the prices of the high season, taking your family might be very expensive.

Also there is not many things to do in the village so you should use the day as more of a relax day. Anchor Bay is beautiful and is a great place to just kick back and chill.

How To Make Your Day A Great One

To avoid the same mistakes that we made, here is our quick guide to making your day a great one.

  • If you travel by bus, set off early.
  • Arrive as early as you can to get a good spot next to the water.
  • Bring your own food and drink.
  • Make sure you have a hefty budget.
  • Prepare to relax.

See The Village For Free

As we said earlier, there is a way to see Popeye Village for free and to be honest, looking back this is how we should of seen it.

For those who do not wish to spend the money, and still want to get a great view of the village, head to the cliffs on the opposite side of the cove. From here you will be met with a stunning view of the village.

To reach the opposite side is simple, when you arrive at the main entrance, walk a further 20-30 meters down the road and you will see the cliff tops and Anchor Bay below. From here it is also possible to get down into Anchor Bay itself. From the cliff top a road leads down to a jetty which stretches out into the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean.

Popeye village-Malta

As you will see if you choose this option, many people decide to view the village from this vantage point and do not have to pay a single cent. However there are no facilities on this side of the bay so you must take your own food and drinks.

What Did You Think Of Popeye Village?

Have you visited Popeye Village? If you have we would love to know what you think. Were you disappointed or did you love? Or like us, were you somewhere in between? Leave us a comment and let us know.

Also, we are going to be here on Malta for a while and was wondering if any of our readers have any places that they would recommend we visit? We are always looking for new places to explore and who better to ask than you guys.

Thanks for reading and watch out for our upcoming posts on this beautiful diamond of the Mediterranean.

Thinking of visiting Popeye Village in Malta?

If you find yourself exploring the sun-soaked Mediterranean island of Malta, be sure to keep an eye out for a hidden bay where the laughter of children and the smell of fresh spinach fill the air. Nestled along the rocky coastline is Popeye Village – a real-life tribute to the iconic cartoon sailor.

Tour the original movie set where Robin Williams himself once hammed it up for the big screen. Strike a pose by Popeye’s lopsided shack and Olive Oyl’s charming cottage. See the old film props and sets that bring this nautical wonderland to life.

During my first visit to Malta in 2018 I spent a day exploring the Popeye Village to see what the hype was about. In this guide, I provide my insight on the attraction and tips for your visit.

What are the top places and best things to do in Popeye Village Malta?

The purpose-built village was constructed by Hollywood studio Paramount for their big-budget Popeye movie, and it’s now a small attraction fun park, consisting of a collection of rustic and ramshackle wooden buildings.

But what can you actually do there, you may ask? Well, first of all, you can simply explore the village and take in the quirky, colorful buildings that make up this unique attraction. You can also catch daily live performances by actors dressed up as Popeye, Olive Oyl, and other characters from the movie.

And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of Anchor Bay, where the village is located.

1 . The Film Set

There’s a shipload of fun to be had at Popeye Village for both young and old. Once you step foot in this nautical Neverland, you’ll find it jam-packed with activities for all ages.

main path through Popeye Village

Start off with a visit to the original movie set where Robin Williams himself hammed it up as Popeye back in 1980. It’s a hoot seeing the wonky buildings and colorful props up close.

Then let the kiddos run wild in Olive Oyl’s playhouse or on the antique carousel while Popeye’s famous scatting songs play overhead.

Grown-ups can get their history fix at the cinema with a 15-minute flick on how this hidden gem came to be. When ya get a hankerin’ for grub, bellies of all sizes can be filled to the brim at the Seafarers Bar & Restaurant. And for the adults, you can sample sweet wines at the winery before heading off.

So don’t just stand there looking like a bilge-sucking bilgerat. Hoist anchor and make way for Popeye Village, where kids, adults, and kids-at-heart can all live out their Popeye fantasies.

2. Family-friendly activities at Popeye Village Malta

Popeye Village is not just a film set, but also has a plethora of activities for all ye landlubbers to enjoy!

aerial view of Popeye Vilage and anchor bay

A 2022 survey by Family Travel Magazine found that over 80% of visitors ranked Popeye Village as a top family-friendly attraction in Malta.

There are shows, rides, and museums, as well as playhouses for children to climb and explore. What’s more, there’s several demonstrations including puppet shows and glassblowers, there’s the Slash Pool, a mini golf course, and even free wine tasting for adults.

Scheduled shows

At around 10am is the Welcome Show . This short skit features Popeye gallantly defeating his nemesis Bluto to rescue darling Olive Oyl. Now I’ll admit – the storyline is endearingly cheesy in that classic cartoon way. But there’s something charming about these small-scale, good-humored shows that takes me back to childhood park visits.

Later, we gleefully braved joining the interactive Dance Show that soon had Ariel and I boogying alongside performers and families to upbeat tunes. Embracing those playful moments and not taking ourselves too seriously is the key to fully immersing in the vibrant spirit of Popeye Village.

close up of multi-colored houses at popeye village

The final performance awaited at Olive Oyl’s storybook home – the Puppet Show stage. Now I expected we’d be the only adults without kids in tow. But peering around, it was just eight awkward grown-ups packed onto tiny benches amidst the dollhouse set.

You could sense the puppeteers’ trepidation realizing this was not their typical pint-sized audience. But with some words of encouragement, the show hilariously went on. And let me tell you, watching two theatrical pros valiantly tailor juvenile jokes for a crowd of dubious adults delivered even more entertainment than expected!

The highlight had to be when a clumsy Olive Oyl leaned in to sniff a rotund man for any lingering burger scents after accusing him of hoarding all the village’s patties. In that moment, all us big kids transformed back into guileless children giggling at the playful absurdity. And isn’t finding that youthful wonder what nostalgic family getaways are all about?

3. Water Sports Activities in Anchor Bay

Well shiver me timbers, are you ready to dive into the sparkling blue waters of Malta’s Anchor Bay? There are swimming pools, trampolines, and all sorts of water attractions and games perfect for the kids.

young couple on a boat at Popeye Village

This hidden cove is also perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving, a true treasure for scallywags looking to explore the briny deep. Once you wade into the bay’s crystal clear shallows, you’ll find yourself surrounded by craggy cliffs and sea caves just begging to be explored.

The local dive shops are happy to kit you up with snorkels and tanks so you can see magical marine life like sea turtles, octopus, and colorful fish. No diving experience? No problem! Many shops offer beginner crash courses for landlubbers.

If you prefer to stay above deck, there’s kayaks and boards available to rent too. You can paddle and drift across the calm bay, dipping in for a refreshing swim whenever the mood strikes. The waters here are mild and gentle.

You can even take a boat ride around Anchor Bay, which we did, and needless to say e thoroughly enjoyed the views of Popeye Village from the sea.

4. Popeye’s House Museum

There is a small museum on site that guides visitors through the history of Popeye Village Malta. We discovered the fascinating comics and the filming process documented here, as well as watched a short documentary.

the museum at popeye village malta

There are many different rooms we explored here and we even got to see the original furniture and props that were used during the filming of the movie. Such is the authenticity and the impressive decoration here that we felt like we were part of the cartoon series itself!

We finished our visit by checking out the Popeye Village Malta souvenirs in one of the shops.

  • Emily F 0 contributions Beautiful We didn’t really go around the village but we stayed on the beach. Anchor bay mainly. It was quieter than the village and very beautiful water. I had an u defeated camera and got loads of footage of the sea creatures and it was amazing. The water wasn’t too deep probably about 2-2.5 meters at anchor bay. It was quieter than the rest of the beaches in Malta so I would definetely recommend if you want it to be a little more quiet. Read more Written February 9, 2024

  • 41ldn 0 contributions Excellent value for money and great fun I loved Popeye Village. Apart from being in the company of a moaning, grumpy and intolerable friend, the whole experience at Popeye Village was a very positive one. In particular, because when said friend chose to snap at me yet again, I was able to hang back and accidentally on purpose lose her for the rest of the morning. Then my life was full of bliss, learning about the filming of Popeye, seeing fun and entertaining shows, meeting Popeye Santa (my favourite thing Christmas 2023), and generally enjoying what is a wonderful environment for both adults and children. The value for money is incredible and if I ever go back to Malta, it will be to visit Popeye Village. Amazing. Thank you. The only thing - more choice at the gift store would be welcome. I wanted Popeye medium size toys, Popeye was large and very good value for money. Read more Written January 12, 2024

Two mistakes at the reception we the cause of us not enjoying the visit. 1. We were not told that despite paying €21 per adult, additional fee for a 4 year old and an additional fee for a two year old to play in the play area they wanted to kick us out of the kids play area after 30min despite the fact that it was raining outside. 2. • 937naras 0 contributions Need restoration The place is beautiful, and I felt nostalgic with all the memorabilia ‘cause I love Popeye. But the place needs renovation ASAP. Everything was rusty, dusty and felt it was dirty. They even featured a movie about the place showing how awesome the park was, having lots of fun things to do. But, there is nothing there. My youngest kid, and some others kids was asking to go to the parks attractions like roller coaster, bumper cars, etc. The actors were nice and tried their best: Santa, Popeye were really awesome with us. But the others staff… I am not sure if I got a bad day, since it’s December 30th, all of them were really unpleasant. The two ladies working at the tickets counter were rude to me in the entrance and when I was getting out: one of my kid is 14 and she pays as an adult (and I am ok with that). The adult ticket contains a voucher for a cup of hot wine and I asked if it was possible for her to get a non alcoholic drink. One of the lady just shout at me saying she doesn’t know, suggesting me to ask at the bar. Than, After an hour at the park I was looking for the minigolf and couldn’t find it. When I asked to one of the ladies she shouted me really loud telling me to get out of the park like: outside, outside. It make no sense to me that an attraction of the park is outside of the park. Well, I felt kicked off the park and didn’t came back inside. Well I learned that it’s ok in Malta to offer wine to minors. Read more Written December 30, 2023

I was expecting to only go and explore the film set for around 1-2 hours but it ended up taking the whole day which made it worth every cent of the money i paid for admission and on top of that the freebies offered along side the admission ticket was a really nice touch. What made the experience for me were the actor especially the way they interacted and engaged with us guests. A special shout out goes out to Popeye, The director, bluto, the post man, the mayor. Popeye, olive and Bluto today were all amazing giving the public opportunities to be a part of the film. Extra credit to popeye, I was watching all along and he’s energy was infectious. Product overview: popeye village film set at popeye village malta.

Popeye Village- the movie set abandoned in 1980, remains a huge tourist attraction in Malta

visit popeye set

Popeye Village, also known as Sweethaven Village is situated in Anchor Bay, Mellieha.

It is the actual set used by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions for the Robert Altman’s film “Popeye,” shot in Malta. It is the only film set that still stands in Europe.

In 1929, Popeye appeared for the first time in a comic strip. After 30 years, the cartoons were a huge success on TV, and even today are still being aired throughout the world. The film is based on the comic strips by E.C. Segar about the strongest sailor man that anyone had heard of. The village is all about the hero with large forearms, a pipe in the corner of his mouth, who ate spinach for some extra strength- Popeye the Sailor.

In order to recreate the fictional village of Sweethaven, the construction started in June 1979 and lasted for seven months. To protect the set from high waves crashing into the coastline, a big breakwater was built in Anchor Bay. It took 165 international construction workers t build the village, which consists of nineteen quaint and colorful houses.

The rustic buildings were constructed with wooden materials imported from Holland and Canada. The wooden tiles for the rooftops were transported from Canada, while the wooden logs from Holland. For the construction were used several thousand wooden planks and wood shingles, two thousand gallons of paint and eight tons of nails. Many houses contain various items that are connected to the filming.

The filming started on January 23, 1980, and concluded on June 19, 1980. The movie is called “Popeye” with Robin Williams in the leading role, playing the quirky Popeye the sailor man, who in search for his long-lost father experiences many adventures. The Hollywood movie “Popeye” was his first movie that made it to the big screen.

Today, Popeye Village is an open air museum, and the structures are well preserved in their original form. While wandering the village, the houses depicted in the musical movie turn the fictional world of Popeye into reality. Among them, there are Popeye’s cabin, Olive Oyl’s house, the post office, the shoemaker’s and the silversmith’s house, the firehouse, the dentist shop and the baker’s house.

The Rough House is the building known as the ‘Cafe’ in the film. Inside the house, there are television screens that play the movie ‘Popeye.’ Also, information about the construction of the village is constantly shown in the cinema in a fifteen-minute documentary.

Visitors also come to the village to meet world famous cartoon figures. Characters from the show, such as Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto, and Wimpy are constantly walking around the village. Throughout the years, many shows are held in the village, but the most special event is the Wedding of Popeye and Olive.

Among the exhibitions in the Popeye’s comic museum, there are more than 200 vintage comics, as well as the original Popeye cartoons from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. When the weather is good, visitors enjoy 20-minute boat rides around the bay in an old-styled vessel.

Malta has become an increasingly popular destination over the years, with its crystal-blue waters and stunning historical sites. But there’s another draw on the Mediterranean island that’s one of the most popular among tourists: the abandoned set of the 1980 film "Popeye."

Starring Robin Williams, the flick featured the fictional village of Sweethaven, where Popeye arrived in search of his long-lost father. Built on the water’s edge of Anchor Bay, the original set took seven months and a crew of 165 to complete. The final product included 20 wooden buildings painted very bland colors so the actors could pop against them. After the film wrapped, the locals repainted it, making it a colorful scene.

Now called Popeye Village, tourists can visit the leftover pieces of the Hollywood film and even host weddings there. It’s open seven days a week and features shows, rides, museums, and children’s play areas where kids can meet the main characters from the show—such as Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto, and Wimpy. Some of the houses even include props original to the film to impart a true sense of movie magic.

If that piques your interest, you're in luck: there are other vestiges of film sets all over the world you can visit. Some, like District 12 from Hunger Games lay in ruins while others, like the signs from M*A*S*H , are preserved. No matter your favorite genre, there’s an abandoned set for virtually every type of film. They might not be the easiest to get to (like the one that’s underwater) or find, but they’re certainly worth a visit for any movie fan. Here are 17 abandoned film sets that you can visit.

Star Wars' Tatooine in Tozeur, Tunisia

Though a real visit to another planet is out of the question for now, fans of Star Wars can visit the saga's famous fictional desert world, Tatooine, in Tunisia. Travelers are invited to join tours of the well-kept remnants of the filming locations, including Luke Skywalker's childhood home in the nearby Chott el Jerid salt lake. While these buildings were used only for exterior shots, fans can visit Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata (about a three-hour drive away) to see where the interior shots were filmed.

Pirates of The Caribbean's Port Royale in Wallilabou Anchorage, St. Vincent

Johnny Depp may have left, but the set from the hit 2003 film "Pirates of The Caribbean" remains on St. Vincent. There are props and buildings still standing, including a small museum with memorabilia and photographs, but features like the dock have fallen into disrepair.

Hunger Games’ District 12 in Henry River Mill Village, North Carolina

This eerie place was already a ghost town before the crew of this post-apocalyptic movie moved in, but it made the perfect setting for the famed dystopia in The Hunger Games . The boom of visitors has since died down, but people can still roam the empty streets and buildings at Henry River Mill Village .

The Patriot's Old Spanish Mission in Cypress Gardens, South Carolina

The 170-acre preserve just 30 miles from Charleston has been home to several flicks, including "The Notebook," but was also the filming location for Mel Gibson’s 2000 movie "The Patriot." After it wrapped, pieces of a fake church and bridge were left behind for fans to stumble on.

Field of Dreams’ Baseball Field in Dubuque County, Iowa

Originally a farm, the makers of Kevin Costner's 1989 movie Field of Dreams built a baseball field and it has remained ever since. Visitors can take a spin around the bases, tour or rent out the Kinsella family home, and, on occasion, watch the local “Ghost Players” play some innings.

Big Fish Town of Spectre in Montgomery, Alabama

Situated on a private island, what remains of the idyllic town from Tim Burton's "Big Fish" is just a few buildings and rundown streets. Though it's technically private property, the owners are pretty relaxed when it comes to allowing people to fish, camp, picnic, and explore the scenic natural surroundings. There’s just a minor bridge toll of a few dollars — not a bad deal for taking in some Hollywood history.

M*A*S*H Signs in Malibu Creek State Park, California

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

As if you needed another excuse to visit the stunning hiking trails of Malibu. While trekking through the mountains with a picture-perfect ocean view, visitors should keep their eyes peeled for remnants of the long-running TV show M*A*S*H , which was shot here between 1972 and 1983. Pieces of signs and military vehicles were restored in 2007 and now remain on display in Malibu Creek State Park .

Trail Dust Town in Tucson, Arizona

Though it doesn’t look abandoned now, this outdoor shopping mall was made out of the leftover set of an unfinished 1951 Glenn Ford western movie. It still retains the original charm, with the added bonuses of activities for both children and adults, including a Ferris wheel, miniature train, carousel, and Wild West-style stunt shows,

Death Tunnel at Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky

Enter if you dare. This abandoned sanatorium served as a tuberculosis and mental hospital before closing in 1961. The facility's chilling concrete chute (used to transport dead bodies out of the building) provided the ultimate spooky backdrop to the 2004 horror film "Death Tunnel." It’s since been used on shows like Ghost Hunters and is credited as one of the most haunted hospitals in the United States.

L’Enfant et la Sirène’s Underwater Village in France

A couple of filmmakers in the 1960s were eager to test the waters of filming capabilities by actually shooting scenes for their movie, "L’Enfant et la Sirène" (The Child and the Mermaid), underwater. They built an entire village almost 100 feet below sea level just off the Cap d’Antibes, where interested parties would need scuba gear to visit today.

Session 9 Set at Danvers State Hospital in Danvers, Massachusetts

Another abandoned psychiatric hospital makes the list, and this one served as the backdrop for the 2001 horror film "Session 9." Many of the buildings were demolished and turned into condos, but parts of the façade are still intact.

12 Monkeys Set at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

This prison once housed Al Capone, though after the place closed down, it fell to ruins. When the creators of the Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt flick were looking for a post-apocalyptic setting, they headed to this creepy spot. Fans can still tour the building, now one of the most popular haunted tourist attractions in the U.S. , and listen to an audio tour narrated by Steve Buscemi.

Girl, Interrupted Hospital at Harrisburg State Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Many of the buildings used in the Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder film have been turned into offices after the hospital officially shut down in 2006. But signs from the film remain on the property, like the one that reads “Administration.”

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters Village in Augsburg, Germany

In the woods of Augsburg, an hour's drive west of Munich, Germany, lies the remains of the set from the 2013 fantasy horror film, complete with a fake well and town square.

Lord of the Rings Hobbit Holes in Matamata, New Zealand

Luckily, this film set is easy to visit if you're already on a New Zealand road trip . Since the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies wrapped production, the locals have maintained the whimsical buildings and backdrops, and offer a variety of tours of Hobbiton for fans to enjoy.

The Fugitive Bus Scene in Dillsboro, North Carolina

Shot on a stretch of the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, the remnants from this iconic Harrison Ford scene in Fugitive are still visible today. The wrecks of the train and the bus lay near the tracks for fans to visit.

Schindler’s List’s Plaszow Camp in Krakow, Poland

The remains of the real Nazi concentration camp were destroyed, so the filmmakers for Schindler's List decided to create a replica. It was the only set built for the movie and still stands in the Krakus Mound Quarry near the original site, which visitors can tour with a guide.

Biden Tried to Show Solidarity With East Palestine. He Found Divisions Instead.

The president visited the Ohio town over a year after a devastating train derailment. He faced a divided community anxious over the long-term health consequences of an environmental disaster.

President Biden traveled to East Palestine on Friday to show solidarity with a community still reeling more than a year after a Norfolk Southern train derailed, spilling a toxic mess across this small Ohio town near the border with Pennsylvania.

But what he found when he got here were divisions on every corner.

On the main street, protesters accused the White House of neglect and asked why it had taken Mr. Biden so long to visit. More than 100 Trump supporters, some of whom had driven in from out of state, held up “Impeach Biden” signs. And still others said they were sick of their town being used as a political prop and wanted answers about their long-term health.

Mr. Biden alluded to some of those differences during remarks near the crash site, saying that “it doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or Republican or independent.”

“What matters is we’re all Americans,” Mr. Biden continued. “We look out for one another. We leave no one behind. And we come back stronger than before.”

Mr. Biden also said the National Institutes of Health would issue six grants to research universities to study “the short and long term impacts” of the toxic spill — a key concern among residents, many of whom complain of health problems since the accident.

Tens of thousands of tons of contaminated solid waste and millions of gallons of wastewater have been shipped out of East Palestine since the derailment, the Environmental Protection Agency said. Ohio declared the drinking water safe just weeks after the crash.

“The president has no concerns with drinking the water in East Palestine,” Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, said this week. She was responding to a reporter who mentioned that President Barack Obama had drunk filtered tap water in Flint, Mich. , in 2016 after a lead contamination crisis in the city.

During Friday’s visit, Mr. Biden took a sip of coffee brewed with tap water while visiting a local candle-making workshop and also had a cup of water beside him as he met with the business owners and local residents.

Still, the fact that it took Mr. Biden a year to visit East Palestine, a town of 5,000 people, bothered many people in the community, particularly because he had promised to do so soon after the derailment.

Republicans and many residents have said his absence was a sign of disrespect .

“It’s sad he waited so long,” said Kathleen Unkefer, 68, a lifelong resident of East Palestine and florist who watched the different rallies through the window of the Flowers Straight From the Heart shop. “I just feel it’s all political. It’s an election year.”

The White House has said Mr. Biden wanted to go at a moment when his visit would not be disruptive. And Biden administration officials have defended the federal response, saying the government has sent a steady flow of federal resources to the community, and deployed hundreds of people to assess the risks in the days after the spill.

The administration has said Norfolk Southern should be held accountable for the harm caused by the derailment.

“While there are acts of God, this was an act of greed that was 100 percent preventable," Mr. Biden said on Friday.

Mr. Biden has not approved a presidential disaster declaration, as Ohio’s governor requested last year, and as many residents were hoping he would announce on Friday. But he assured residents that the federal government would stay invested in its recovery.

“What they do not make whole, what they cannot make whole, the government will make whole,” he added of Norfolk Southern. “We have an obligation.”

Norfolk Southern has said the cost of the derailment cleanup, legal costs and assistance to the community will be more than $800 million. The company also has committed more than $100 million toward costs including direct payments to residents and reimbursements for emergency medical workers.

“We’re committed to helping them make it an even more vibrant, thriving place,” Alan H. Shaw, the chief executive of Norfolk Southern, said in a statement.

The train was carrying more than 700,000 pounds of vinyl chloride, a carcinogen used to produce pipes, furniture and packaging, when it derailed. Emergency responders set the chemicals ablaze during a so-called controlled burn to avert a wider explosion.

On Friday, Mr. Biden ignored shouted questions about the timing of his visit after his official remarks.

Presidential visits to devastated communities can sometimes provide the opportunity for Democrats and Republicans to play down their differences and focus on showing empathy. Local leaders have often commended Mr. Biden on such occasions.

But Mr. Biden, who ran for president on a pledge to unite the nation, confronted a community that is a microcosm of the politically divided country.

Former President Donald J. Trump, Mr. Biden’s likely opponent in this year’s presidential race, visited East Palestine in the weeks after the derailment. Hours before Mr. Biden arrived on Friday, the Trump campaign issued an advertisement titled “Too Little, Too Late.”

Even the invitation for Mr. Biden to visit from the mayor, Trent Conaway, carried a hint of the division. Mr. Conaway has criticized Mr. Biden for allowing Mr. Trump to visit before him.

Jaime Nentwick, a 37-year-old organizer at an Ohio environmental justice nonprofit, said the situation in East Palestine has been politicized.

“It’s been a prop since the derailment,” she said. “The most important thing in order to give the residents some kind of heightened hope, to restore that, is to give an actual factual reason as to why he hasn’t been here in a year.”

Biden vows to continue to hold Norfolk Southern accountable for derailment in East Palestine, Ohio

By Kaia Hubbard, Caitlin Yilek

Updated on: February 16, 2024 / 7:51 PM EST / CBS News

Washington —  President Biden visited East Palestine, Ohio, on Friday, just over a year after a freight train carrying hazardous materials  derailed  in the small village  near the Pennsylvania state line , and he vowed to hold the railway company Norfolk Southern accountable.

"There are acts of God," Mr. Biden said. "This was an act of greed that was 100% preventable."

Mr. Biden received a briefing from local officials on the recovery efforts and continued response in the aftermath of the derailment and hazardous chemical fire involving a 9,300-foot train with about 150 cars in February 2023. The derailment sparked serious health and environmental concerns for residents, who have expressed frustration over the federal government's response to the crisis.

"I want to continue to hold Norfolk Southern accountable, make sure they make your community whole, now and in the future. And what they do not make whole, what they cannot make whole, what isn't made [whole], the government will make whole. We have an obligation," Mr. Biden said.

President Joe Biden meets with workers in East Palestine, Ohio

East Palestine residents' health concerns

Among the hazardous materials aboard the Norfolk Southern train was vinyl chloride, a substance used to make a variety of plastic products. Crews worked to vent and burn off rail cars carrying the vinyl chloride, which has been associated with an increased risk of various cancers and neurological symptoms, to prevent an explosion.

And although hundreds of residents were evacuated during the vent and burn, some of the residents who had evacuated returned and then started getting symptoms, such as rashes and respiratory problems. A year later, some say they're still suffering health issues .

The president announced six National Institutes of Health grants would fund the study of the short- and long-term impacts of the disaster.

Criticism for delayed visit

Mr. Biden's visit, which came at the invitation of Mayor Trent Conaway, comes after he received  criticism for not having visited East Palestine until now. Although the administration has noted that officials were on the ground within hours of the derailment, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg likewise drew ire from Republicans for not visiting until nearly three weeks after the crash.

In his remarks after meeting with local leaders, Mr. Biden said there's still a lot of work to do in East Palestine, "but we're going to stay until the very end." But the visit still spurred criticism for coming a year after the derailment occurred.

"Well, obviously we wish he would have came a little bit sooner, but, hey, he's here now and we can use all the help we can get right now. And we did put in for state of emergency and it hasn't passed yet and I don't really know all the details of that, but like I said, any help we can get, we would really appreciate," local resident Christina Dilworth told CBS Pittsburgh station KDKA-TV .

Former President Donald Trump, who visited the village weeks after the derailment, called it an "insult" for Mr. Biden to visit East Palestine a year after the incident.

"It was such a great honor to be with the people of East Palestine immediately after the tragic event took place," Trump said in a social media post on Wednesday, adding that "Biden should have gone there a long time ago."

During the president's visit, Mr. Biden said he was briefed on the "herculean efforts" of the last year, and pushed back on criticism that his visit to East Palestine comes too late — a year after the derailment occurred.

"My administration was on the ground within hours working closely with the governor, the mayor, the senators and House members, community leaders, to make sure you have everything you need," Mr. Biden said. "My administration ordered Norfolk Southern to clean up the mess it created and ensure it was done right."

Derailment became a political flashpoint

The derailment became a political flashpoint in the days and months following the crash, as Republicans bashed the White House for its response. But the administration has repeatedly made clear that Mr. Biden has been working in coordination with local officials since the incident.

"I've spoken with every official in Ohio, Democrat and Republican, on a continuing basis, as in Pennsylvania," Mr. Biden told reporters in March, when he said he would "be out there at some point."

Addressing rail safety

The president also called on Congress to take action on rail safety during his visit. A bipartisan rail safety bill that arose in the aftermath of the derailment has been long-delayed in the Senate, where it's unclear if enough Republican support exists for the measure to clear a filibuster.

"When trains are carrying hazardous waste, storage tank cars — we argued about this for years — they should be stronger, they should be able to survive crashes without exploding," Mr. Biden said.

He said brakes should "meet higher safety standards" and there should be more staffing on trains.

There were 312 hazardous materials incidents on the nation's rails in 2023, down from 368 in 2022, 636 a decade ago in 2013 and 1,057 in 2000, according to a CBS News analysis of Department of Transportation data. The cost of such incidents was $63.6 million in 2023, compared with $23.9 million in 2022, $22.6 million a decade ago in 2013 and $26.5 million in 2000.

hazardous-rail-costs.png

Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, tells CBS News the agency has made hundreds of recommendations that can be taken to improve rail safety, but that rail companies and Congress have yet to move on.

"We're going to issue safety recommendations that I hope are implemented immediately, whether it's through a congressional action, regulatory action, or operator action," Homendy said. "But then there's rail safety generally. We have issued many rail safety recommendations that could be implemented today, that Congress could take action on, and I hope they do. For example, we have 190 open rail safety recommendations that we've issued with no action on it right now."

2026 quarterback dia bell to visit auburn in march, share this article.

Class of 2026 quarterback dia bell has announced his intention to visit Auburn this spring. The 6-foot-2, 192-pound prospect has already received an offer from the Tigers with plenty of other major programs also interested.

Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Miami, Indiana, Penn State as well as SEC programs Florida and LSU have already extended an offer to the sophomore.

Bell will make stops at two of those schools, Miami and LSU, a week before he comes down to the Plains. He’ll then continue to Texas , Penn State, West Virginia, Florida, and Mississippi State at some point later on in the spring or summer.

While it is still very early in the process for Bell, it is likely a prospect of his size and talent waits until the last minute to verbally commit to a program.

We’ll see how incoming Auburn freshman Walker White performs over the next year and a half. His performance could tie directly into how hard head coach Hugh Freeze and company go after Bell in the coming years.

Busy spring ahead for class of 2026 quarterback Dia Bell. The class of 2026 quarterback is going to be all over the place in the coming month or so, as he visits a ton of schools.
