CruiseMapper logo

Viking OCEAN has commenced bookings for its 2026 cruise season in response to high demand, with numerous departure dates for 2024 already fully booked and 2025 departures filling rapidly.

The company's decision to open bookings for 2026 comes after experiencing strong demand, resulting in sold-out dates for many of its 2024 departures and brisk sales for its 2025 voyages.

Bookings for 2026 departures are available for all of Viking's ocean ships, including the upcoming addition, Viking Vesta , slated to join the fleet in July 2025. This 998-passenger vessel starts an inaugural season with voyages to popular destinations in Europe's Mediterranean and Baltic/Scandinavia.

Sistership Viking Vela is set to debut in December 2024.

In addition to these offerings, Viking OCEAN has introduced 6 new 3-day immersive pre- and post-cruise extensions in Barcelona , Istanbul , London , Rome , Stockholm , and Venice , available for both this year and 2025.

Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking, said:

“We have always done things a bit differently. At Viking, we are contrarians. We design travel experiences for thinking people, with no children and no casinos. “We are pleased that our approach has resonated with so many – and with the addition of the Viking Vesta to our ocean fleet, we look forward to introducing even more curious travellers to the Viking way of exploration.”

The company also shared details about six new pre- and post-cruise extensions it will offer in 2024 and 2025. Viking Cruises’ 2025 Newbuild to be Named Viking Vesta

  • January 18, 2024

Viking Ship in Port

The newest Viking vessel will carry the name Viking Vesta. According to the company’s website, the newbuild is set to enter service in mid-2025.

Following the 2024-built Viking Vela , the upscale vessel will also be slightly larger than Viking’s previous newbuilds.

As the 12th new ocean-going cruise ship built for the brand since the debut of the 2015-built Viking Star, the Vesta will be ten meters longer, as well as two meters wider than its predecessors.

The extra space allows for the addition of new staterooms, which will up the ship’s capacity to 998 guests.

Part of Viking Vesta’s inaugural program is also available on Viking’s website. After starting service in early July, the newbuild is set to offer a series of cruises in the Mediterranean.

The schedule features seven- to 21-night voyages to different destinations in the region, including the Grek Islands, the French Riviera, the Adriatic Sea, and more.

Among the itineraries is the 12-night “Mediterranean Odyssey,” which sails from Venice to Barcelona and features destinations in Italy, Croatia, Greece, Monaco, France and Spain.

The Viking Vesta is also poised to offer two cruises to Northern Europe and Iceland during its maiden season.

Sailing to Iceland, Portugal, Spain, England and Ireland, the 14-night voyages take place soon after the ship’s inaugural cruise in July.

According to Viking, the new Vesta is an all-veranda small ship designed to “dock where larger ships cannot.”

Onboard, the 47,000-ton ship offers an array of facilities that include a complete wellness center, two specialty restaurants, a main dining room and a theater.

The Vesta will also offer several bars and lounges, a winter garden, two pool decks and different stateroom categories, including the Owner’s Suite.

The multi-room, 140-square-meter accommodation is the largest onboard and features a series of amenities that include a dining area for six, a private library, an ocean-view dry sauna, and more.

Cruising with Viking

Since 2015, Viking’s ocean cruises have earned acclaim for their inclusive luxury ships and engaging destination-focused itineraries. Viking’s voyages appeal to active and intellectual adults who are interested in learning about the history and culture of the destinations they visit. The cruise line's 10 identical 930-passenger ships include attractive perks, such as shipwide complimentary Wi-Fi and verandas for all cabins.

The smaller size of Viking's ships allows them to access more exclusive ports throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Standard cruise itineraries range from eight to 93 days, while the line's World Cruise options can last up to 180 days. As part of Viking's inclusive fare, passengers are also treated to one complimentary shore excursion in each port of call.

U.S. News Insider Tip: While Viking's cruise fares seem high compared to other lines, you need to compare their all-inclusive value to cruises where everything comes at an additional cost. There are very few extra expenses that you will have once you're on board the ship. They also offer discounted sailings, including their Quiet Season Mediterranean Cruises. – Gwen Pratesi, Contributor

Cruise Critic: Everything You Need to Know About Sailing a Nile River Cruise with Viking

August 28, 2023 — Viking ships sail around the globe, but there is one country in particular where it has its sights set particularly high: Egypt. At the naming ceremony of Viking Aton in Aswan, Viking Chairman Torstein Hagen teased that the options there are endless, promising a “slew of new ships” to come. There is no question that the excitement is there, both from Viking as well as customers seeing that 2024 Egypt sailings are almost entirely sold out with a similar direction headed for 2025.

Travel Weekly: One unforgettable day on a Viking Nile cruise

August 23, 2023 — I just completed a press trip to Egypt with Viking to launch their newest and fourth ship on the Nile, the Viking Aton. It was an abbreviated version of the company's 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, which the Aton will sail after it launches later this month. While it was a shorter itinerary I was on, it was by no means disappointing. This was my first time in Egypt -- my first time on the continent of Africa, in fact. I found Egypt to be almost surreal, a sort of mythological place.

A passenger on the 9-month cruise lists things about cruises he finds bizarre, including a rubber-duck scavenger hunt

  • Marc Sebastian, a TikToker, spent 18 days on the nine-month Royal Caribbean Ultimate World Cruise.
  • Throughout the experience, Sebastian shared his unfiltered thoughts about cruise culture.
  • He opened up about aspects of cruises he found bizarre, such as the rubber-duck scavenger hunt.

Insider Today

One of the most popular characters aboard Royal Caribbean's nine-month Ultimate World Cruise is about to disembark — but before doing so, he shared a list of things about cruise culture he found bizarre.

Marc Sebastian , a TikToker, landed a spot on the cruise ship that social media is obsessed with in January after he begged to be sent onto the vessel to document the drama.

After his pitch went viral on TikTok in December 2023, Sebastian was contacted by the publishing company Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, which offered to send him on the cruise for 18 nights.

@marcsebastianf someone get whoopi on the line girl i have some goss for her #ultimateworldcruise #worldcruise #serenadeoftheseas #cruisetok #cruise #9monthcruise #titanic ♬ original sound - Marc Sebastian

With his roller-coaster experience drawing to a close, Sebastian shared a video on Monday summarizing things he'd learned during his time on the cruise, which he described as a "floating retirement home with a Cheesecake Factory attached." It has more than 2.1 million views as of Tuesday.

The Titanic taboo and Whoopi Goldberg's link to the Ultimate World Cruise

First up on Sebastian's list is the taboo surrounding the Titanic .

The TikToker said he discovered chatting about the Titanic was frowned upon on cruises after mentioning to other passengers during a lunch that the ill-fated vessel was only 100 feet shorter than the Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas.

"Utensils dropped, OK? Waiters gasped, dead silent," he said. Sebastian added that he was confused until his fellow cruiser Nadine Bower whispered that passengers shouldn't talk about the Titanic.

"You're not supposed to talk about the Titanic. Who knew that? I didn't," Sebastian said.

Besides the Titanic taboo, Sebastian said he was surprised to learn about the naval tradition of cruise ships having "godmothers."

According to the Cruise Critic, a cruise godmother is a title of honor given to someone "selected to bring good luck and protection to the vessel." Stars honored as cruise godmothers include Audrey Hepburn and Martha Stewart.

In the case of the Ultimate World Cruise, Sebastian said that title had been given to none other than Whoopi Goldberg.

"Whoopi, girl, you and I, we gotta talk," Sebastian said. "As an EGOT winner, I just don't feel like this is the right ship for you."

The Serenade of the Seas is far from Goldberg's first foray as a ship godmother.

She was previously named godmother of the Viking Serenade ship before it was removed from the Royal Caribbean's fleet in 2002, World of Cruising reported.

When asked to become ship godmother for the Serenade of the Seas, christened into service in 2003, Goldberg asked whether the role meant she would need to "put the ship through college," per World of Cruising.

Hiding rubber ducks is a relatively new tradition among die-hard cruisers

Sebastian said passengers on the nine-month cruise were "crazy" about hiding small rubber ducks around the ship for others to discover.

He said he'd even seen a few passengers rifling through artificial plants trying to collect ducks.

The unique tradition is relatively new. According to Cruising Ducks, the rubber-duck scavenger hunt started in 2018 when a 10-year-old passenger on the Carnival Breeze cruise hid 50 ducks aboard the ship.

The fad became so popular that there are now entire Facebook groups dedicated to sharing photos of rubber ducks discovered on cruises and their hiding places.

"I love a fun scavenger hunt. Why ducks? Because they float? I just don't get it," Sebastian said.

Cruise newcomers may be surprised to find out where the water in pools comes from

Sebastian said he was also thrown for a loop when he found out that the pool water on the cruise comes from the ocean.

"I don't know how in my head I thought they were filling them, but what I didn't think they were doing was filling it with seawater," he said.

But it's common practice for cruises to use seawater as a source of potable water.

According to the Royal Caribbean Group , 90% of the freshwater used to supply pools, drinking water, showers, toilets, spas, and more is created on board using two processes — desalination or reverse osmosis.

The used water, known as wastewater, is treated before being dumped into the ocean.

Carnival Cruise Line has a similar process on its vessels.

Still, the process — and how often the water is replaced — shocked Sebastian.

"Let me tell you, they are not shy about sucking the whole pool down right into the ocean and then sucking up some new water," Sebastian added.

Marc Sebastian didn't respond to a request for comment from BI.

Shrimp & Crab Wontons

Many regions of China have different varieties of wontons. The meaning of the word also varies: in Mandarin, it means “slowly boiled dumpling,” but in Cantonese it means “swallowing clouds.” These versatile, delightful dumplings can be steamed, poached in soup, or fried and served with dipping sauces. This style below is typical of Cantonese cuisine.

Ingredients

  • ½ C (170 g) finely shredded cabbage, preferably Savoy
  • Kosher salt to taste
  • 6 oz (170 g) shrimp and lump crabmeat, chopped
  • 1 C (50 g) spring onions, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp (14 g) ginger purée, or finely grated ginger
  • 1 tsp (5 g) soy sauce
  • 1 tsp (4 g) sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp (15 g) cream cheese
  • 1 14-oz (398-g) pkg wonton wrappers
  • 2–3 C (473–682 g) vegetable or peanut oil

Combine cabbage, salt, shrimp and crab, onions, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil and cream cheese in a bowl and mix well. Separate wonton wrappers and arrange on a dry surface. Place a scant tsp of filling in center of each wrapper; wet edges and seal by bringing opposite corners together, forming a triangle. Bring 2 remaining corners together toward center and seal with a pinch.

Preheat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Working in batches, fry wontons until golden brown, about 6 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as hoisin; sweet and sour or Chinese mustard.

  • Prep time: 22 minutes.
  • Cook time: 36 minutes.
  • Makes 8 servings.
