More about greece.

In southeastern Europe, the idyllic islands of Greece sit amidst the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, encompassing the Aegean Sea. As the cradle of ancient civilization, Greece is home to many ancient ruins like the Acropolis of Athens in the heart of Ancient Greece. In the southern part of the Aegean Sea, Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and home to the main Bronze Age archaeological site, the Palace of Knossos, the home of the Minotaur. In the northern part of the Aegean Sea, Mykonos offers sun-kissed, sandy beaches, beach clubs and vibrant nightlife. South of Mykonos, the white-washed buildings of Santorini are perched atop cliffs that sit gracefully against the azure skies, offering one-of-a-kind views. Greece is a living canvas of awe-inspiring history and natural splendor. Embark on a journey through both the ancient wonders and contemporary delights, and taste the country's rich culinary heritage with flavorful Mediterranean dishes.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Visit the ancient capital with Athens vacation packages

Athens is one of the oldest cities in Greece, dating back to the ancient world, and you can still see much of its history on display through well-preserved ruins like the Parthenon. Several museums are available throughout town, but your best bet is simply visiting the ruins themselves. Additionally, you'll find modern attractions, too, like stunning world-class restaurants and a bustling nightlife.

An image of crete

Crete is a massive island southeast of the mainland near the border of north Africa. On this island, you'll find welcoming towns and cities along with ruins of a historic culture known as the Minoans, who built a massive palace complex that you can still see the remnants of. Plus, the natural features and mountains here are good for outdoor adventurers looking for a satisfying hike.

Much of Greece is comprised of islands scattered throughout the Aegean, and each one has something special to offer to its visitors. When you visit the islands, you'll find stunning examples of Greek architecture as well as a more laid-back atmosphere compared to the mainland cities. Plus, the viewpoints from many of the islands make watching sunrises and sunsets unforgettable experiences.

Greece FAQ's

Greece is famous for being the birthplace of democracy, the creation of the Olympic Games, and for its unique and historical architecture. Some examples include the Acropolis in Athens, the Sanctuary of Delphi, and the ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The country offers the most beautiful natural landscape and a fascinating culture. Officially called the Hellenic Republic, Greece is an absolutely beautiful country. The land of Greece is infused with ancient mythology and if you like archeology, history, art, and philosophy then you will love Greece. The country is also famous for its delicious cuisine, cliffs tumbling into sparkling blue water, sand and pebble beaches, and a balmy Mediterranean climate, which all make this destination a prime tourist destination.

Known for its abundance of ancient ruins, whitewashed villages, beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and welcoming atmosphere, it is no wonder that Greece ranks among Europe`s top travel destinations. But the reason that tourism exists in the first place is that it`s just so beautiful here. Often, you`ll find that beauty on the many Scattered Islands , lying like little gems in the seas surrounding the Grecian peninsula. Each one offers its own share of spectacular landscapes, historic sites, nightlife scenes and cultural delights. There`s a wealth of these to explore. From the Ionian Islands in the west – including Kefalonia Island and Corfu Island - to the Aegean Sea, boasting Mykonos Island , Santorini Island , Paros Island , Kos Island and Rhodes Island , amongst others. Then there`s the pre-Hellenic Minoan culture of Crete Island to the south. Back on the mainland, there`s scenery worthy of the gods all over the place. The monastery of Meteora , the ruins at Delphi , and then, most legendary, the capital of Athens and all of Mainland Greece to explore.

Generally speaking the best time to visit Greece is during spring (from April until mid-June) and fall (September - October). During these months the weather is mild, and the crowds are less. July and August are very hot months, and it`s very crowded, especially in popular destinations like the Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, etc. Due to its mild climate, Greece is an all-year-round destination. Every season in this country has its charm, as well as its pitfalls, so when to go depends on your travel type, destination and what activities you`re interested in. Like many other countries, you can have a very different experience depending on when you decide to visit. Here is an overview of Greece in all four seasons that will help you make a decision what`s the best time of year for you to visit. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

For some visitors, going to Greece is all about going to the islands. For others, it`s the 2,500 years of history in Athens, on the Peloponnese Peninsula and beyond. But for most travelers, it`s a combination of islands and inland, city and countryside, culture and leisure. Getting from each destination is as varied as the places themselves. Whether you`re traveling for a week or longer, chances are you`ll find yourself using boats, trains, cars and maybe even mopeds. By Boat/Ferry: Greece has 227 inhabited islands and more than 8,500 miles of coastline, so it should come as no surprise that boats are one of the most common ways to get around. The country offers an expansive network of ferries between the various islands and archipelagos, as well as ferry services to Italy and Turkey. Within easy reach of the Athens International Airport is Piraeus, which is the main port for ferries plying the Aegean Sea. From there, there are regular routes to the major islands in the Cyclades, Crete, the Saronic Gulf Islands, the Dodecanese chain and the Northeast Aegean Islands. A smaller port in Athens is Rafina, which has ferry service to Evia, some of the northernmost Cycladic Islands and many of the Northeast Aegean Islands. If you’re traveling to the Ionian Islands off the west coast of Greece, most ferries leaves from Patras or Kyllini on the Peloponnese or Igoumenitsa in Epirus. There are a number of ferry companies, with sea-going vessels that range from traditional large ferries carrying both passengers and vehicles to faster-moving catamarans and hydrofoils. By Train: The national rail system (OSE) is extremely limited and they don`t cover the whole country. Trains are slow and generally not very clean. That said, the importance of rail travel is now being rediscovered, and the national rail network is under major renovation. The project`s completion is still a long way off. There has been extensive (and continuing) modernization of the Athens-Thessaloniki corridor, with travel times being significant reduced. By Car: Driving the mountainous roads of the mainland and the busy streets of some of the more popular islands is not for everyone. If you`re up to the challenge, over 21 years old and comfortable with a standard transmission, renting a car is definitely a great way to explore remote villages in the countryside that are not reachable via public transportation. You will need an International Driving Permit accompanied by a valid driver`s license from your home country. In the U.S., these are available through AAA (American Automobile Association) and NAC (National Automobile Club). Car rental offices are present throughout Greece, especially in major cities and in highly touristed areas. The cars offered generally have manual gearboxes; automatics do exist, but it is advised to reserve one in advance. Some car rental agencies and insurance policies do not allow the car to be taken out of Greece.

The currency of Greece is the Euro. US dollars are not accepted. One euro is divided into 100 cents. The official symbol for the euro is €, and its ISO code is EUR. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for euros upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the different cities. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Greece .

Greek is the official national language and is the native tongue of the vast majority of the population, although the English speaking visitor will encounter no significant language problem. English is the most widely studied and understood foreign language in Greece, followed by French, Italian, and German. Basic knowledge of English can be expected from almost all in the tourism industry and public transport services. Learning a few Greek terms, such as `hello` and `thank you` will be warmly received.

Check out one of our Greece guided tours,  A Week in Ancient Greece: Athens, Delphi & Olympia , which is specifically designed to make the most of the cooler months.

Certain islands aren’t accessible during the winter, but this time of year is excellent for visiting the mainland. Hop between Mykonos and Santorini in the fall and spring for the ultimate Greek getaway.

In a land of rich history, rugged ruins, and remarkable beauty, the must-see destinations on our trips to Greece focus heavily on ancient attractions. But it’s not all about history. The towns, cities, and islands where you’ll find the top attractions offer exciting venues to explore, both old and new.

  • The Acropolis. One of the most important archaeological sites in the world and a masterpiece of classical Greek architecture, the Acropolis is home to some of the most iconic landmarks in Greece, including the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike. Its museum houses more than 3,000 artifacts, from sculptures to jewelry, and offers stunning views of the Acropolis and the city of Athens.
  • Ancient Agora. Today, it’s a popular tourist destination featuring museums, archaeological sites, shops, and restaurants.
  • Temple of Olympian Zeus. One of the largest temples in the ancient world, this colossal temple in Athens is dedicated to Zeus. While only 15 of the original 104 marble columns remain standing, the ruins are among the most impressive in Greece.
  • Panathenaic Stadium. The site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and the 2004 Summer Olympics, this ancient stadium in Athens, made entirely of marble, was built in the fourth century B.C. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also a popular venue for concerts and other events.
  • Acropolis of Lindos.  Set on a high cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea on the island of Rhodes, the Acropolis of Lindos is a beautiful and well-preserved archaeological site featuring a number of temples and other ruins.
  • Palace of Knossos.  This ancient palace located on Crete, with its amazing frescoes and artifacts from the Minoan civilization, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece.
  • Samariá Gorge. A national park located on the island of Crete, Samariá Gorge is one of the longest gorges in Europe and a popular destination for hiking and camping.
  • Meteora monasteries. This group of monasteries, located in central Greece, is built on top of towering sandstone pillars and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Greece has typical Mediterranean weather—usually mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. However, the weather can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year, so checking the forecast before traveling on any of our Greece tour packages is essential.

  • Respect for traditions. Greeks are very proud of their culture and history, so it is important to be respectful of their traditions. This includes dressing appropriately for visits to religious sites.
  • Greeting people. It is customary to greet people with a handshake and a kiss on the cheek. Of course, you can choose what feels comfortable for you.
  • Dining. While in some countries it is considered rude to not finish your meal, in Greece it is considered polite to leave some food on your plate at the end of a meal.
  • Tipping. It is customary to tip in Greece, but the amount is up to you. A tip of 10–15% is generally considered acceptable.
  • Greek Orthodox Church holidays and festivals. Pay attention to the calendar because many businesses are closed on these days.

Greek food is famous for its use of fresh, seasonal ingredients, its simple yet flavorful cooking methods, and its emphasis on healthy eating. Our trips to Greece are guaranteed to be full of meals featuring fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables. Some typical ingredients in Greek cuisine include olive oil and feta cheese, as well as grilled fish and meat. Some of the most popular dishes to try on Greece trips include:

  • Souvlaki. A grilled skewer of meat, usually lamb or pork, served with pita bread, tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki.
  • Gyros. This is a similar dish to souvlaki, but the meat in gyros is cooked on a vertical rotisserie. You can find this popular street food all over the country.
  • Moussaka. A traditional Greek baked dish made with layers of eggplant, ground beef, béchamel sauce, and feta cheese.
  • Spanakopita. Served as an appetizer or main course, this savory pie is created with fresh spinach and feta cheese enclosed in crispy phyllo dough. Spanakopita is best enjoyed warm.
  • Tzatziki. On a hot day, this refreshing dip made from yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, and herbs hits the spot. Enjoy it served with pita bread, vegetables, or meats.
  • Olives. Olives are grown in many parts of Greece, but the Peloponnese region is the largest producer. The dark purple Kalamata olive, famous for its rich flavor, is one of the most well-known varieties of Greek olives.
  • Feta cheese. This traditional Greek cheese—salty, tangy, and crumbly—has been produced for centuries. Often used in salads, dips, and sauces, feta makes a delicious snack or appetizer.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Greece. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. If you’re visiting the islands, you’ll likely have to bring your bag with you on the ferry, so make sure you’re comfortable carrying it. After you’ve booked one of our Greece tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Sun protection.  For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Greece, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Layers.  We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.  Since you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential to have with you. Those walking shoes will come in handy while exploring the rugged ruins of Ancient Greece or the volcanic shores of Santorini.
  • Dressier attire. If you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on our trips to Greece, you may want to pack dressier attire.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites.  On our Greece tours, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and staff at these sites may deny entrance on this basis.
  • A small day bag.  Many churches and museums will not allow you to bring in large backpacks for security purposes—you’ll need to check them at the door. However, you can wear a small day bag on your front, like a cross-body travel bag or stylish mini backpack.
  • An RFID money belt or wallet.  Greece’s city streets can get busy, and like in any country with many tourists, you’ll want to be wary of pickpockets. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) can protect your credit card info from electronic theft, and a money belt will conceal your cash without ruining your outfit.

Once you’ve reserved one of our tour packages to Greece, we’ll send you detailed information about what to bring with you. Don’t forget to download the  Go Ahead app  before you take off, so you’ll have all the info you need about your trip right in your pocket.

Explore the ancient capital of Athens

Often dubbed the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens was arguably the most influential city of ancient times. Contemporary meets antique in a city both drenched in world history and brimming with a modernity. You’ll discover thermal lakes, buzzing beachside neighborhoods and some of the world’s oldest ruins.

Visit the ancient Olympic site in Olympia

The birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia first became known to the world in 776 BC, when the very first games were held. Visit this world-famous ancient site that was also a holy place of worship for Zeus, the Greek god, surrounded by lush forestry in a rolling valley.

See the ruins of the Temple of Apollo

Reachable by a day trip from Athens, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was rebuilt numerous times before settling into the historic site it inhabits today. Marvel at the remaining sandstone columns and decayed limestone that remind us of the past it endured over many thousands of years.

Dine 'Meze Style' in Psyri, Athens

Most travel guides will have you visiting Plaka for Greek food and nightlife, but authentic eateries are best found in the nearby neighborhood of Psiri. Between no-frills bars and dusty antique shops, you will find traditional mezze-style eateries and a boutique energy that pays tribute to Greece’s culinary heritage.

Visit Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Meteora

One of Greece’s most popular tourist attractions, it’s easy to see why so many flock to the spectacular rock formations of Meteora. Marvel at talents of both man and Mother Nature at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Byzantine monasteries that float around the summits.

Our top 5 things to do in Greece

Food and history form the basis of Greek culture and play a big role in all our trips to Greece. With Trafalgar, we'll showcase the best this country has to offer from sun up to dreamy sundown.

Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is found at the foot of the western world’s most important ancient site. Unpeel layers of history as you wander the halls of the past and gaze up at the dazzling site itself through glass walls. Allow yourself at least half a day to take in the enormity of this museum.

Remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace

Tours in Greece are scarcely complete without a visit to this iconic archeological site, where you will find the remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace, one of the world’s best-preserved fortresses. Glance up and admire unrivalled panoramic views of the countryside, once the Greek civilisation’s major military centres.

Athens War Museum

Opening its doors in 1975, the Athens War Museum documents the country’s past conflicts and military artefacts. In honor of those who fought for Greece’s freedom, the museum showcases four grand floors of past-to-present history. History enthusiasts will find no shortage of awe within these walls.

Best museums in Greece

Though often visited for Greece island hopping, the enchantment of this Mediterranean jewel extends beyond the sapphire waters. With Trafalgar, you’ll venture under the layers of Greek culture by visiting its many fascinating museums.

Standing its ground as one of Greece’s most famous main meals, moussaka is a wholesome and delectable combination of eggplant, ground meat, onion and béchamel sauce. Try this dish a few times during your visit; there are family variations that get passed through generations.

Souvlaki is street food at its very best. A simple preparation of skewered meats and vegetables, it’s the flavoring that makes this snack a pride of the nation. For the most authentic souvlaki, sample if from a street vendor wrapped up with condiments, salad and thick hot chips.

The small fried balls of kolokythokeftedes can most aptly be compared to zucchini fritters with fetta cheese. Often ordered in summer with a side of tzatziki, these delicious bites are a great starter to any meal. Learn from the locals and snack on kolokythokeftedes alongside a glass of wine in the warm afternoon sun.

Best food in Greece

From an array of antipasto dips like taramasalata and tzatziki, to heavier main courses of grilled meats and fresh fish, Greek cuisine is internationally recognized for its deliciousness. Trafalgar will take you to the heart of Greece’s culinary traditions, each mouthful and mealtime an utter treat.

What to pack for Greece

People packing for a tour

Long, breathable pants or skirts

Often warm all year around, and extremely hot during summer, long, light clothing is ideal for daytime sightseeing in Greece – particularly when visiting historic religious sites that require modest attire.

A stainless steel water bottle

Whether you’re basking ocean-side beneath the hot sun or trekking the ancient monuments of this distinct country, you’ll need to stay hydrated. Stainless steel bottles keep your water cold for eight hours while treading lightly on the environment.

Walking shoes

Comfortable shoes are a must when you’re out from morning to night. Choose sturdy, open-toe walking sandals or closed toe sneakers to ensure you can walk effortlessly for hours.

A wide-lens camera

From coasts spanning miles of sea to some of the world’s most spectacular ruins, Greece is bursting with scenes you will want to remember forever. A wide-lens camera will make it easier to capture the views.

Sun protection

Whether it’s SPF50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed sun hat or long-sleeved clothing, some form of sun protection is crucial when visiting this popular summer vacation spot.

3 Incredible Itineraries for Travelers Heading to Greece This Year

Three Greece travel experts weigh in on how to craft the perfect trip — top hotels, informative tours, and Cycladic islands included.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

trips to greece may 2023

Monica Farber/Travel + Leisure

In the past few years, tourism to Greece has boomed. With the summer high season only a few months away, now’s the time to lock in your own plans, whether they call for a tour of the classics or something a little more adventurous. Here, a collection of trips from the three Greece experts on Travel + Leisure ’s A-List .

A Classic Crowd Pleaser, Arranged by Petros G. Zissimos of Hellenic Holidays

Ian Dagnall/Alamy

This quintessential itinerary includes visits to some of Greece’s most iconic destinations, Zissimos says, adding that “it’s our most popular trip for 2023 so far.” Touch down in Athens, where you can hit highlights such as the Acropolis and Areopagus with a guide, then explore neighborhoods like Kolonaki and Plaka on your own. Zissimos recommends staying two nights at the well-situated Electra Metropolis before heading off to the Cycladic island of Mílos, accessible either by air (45 minutes) or by ferry (from three hours).

Seux Paule/Hemis/Alamy

“Mílos has dozens of beaches to visit, with different combinations of sand, stone, and shells,” says Zissimos, who’s especially partial to Sarakiniko. He also recommends a sailing excursion to Kleftiko, where volcanic rock formations make for spectacular photos, and an evening in the town of Adamantas, where tavernas line the waterfront. The seaside Melian Boutique Hotel & Spa , on the northeastern tip of the island, is a go-to for Zissimos.

Matteo Colombo/Getty Images

You’ll need a morning for the four-hour ferry ride to Naxos, an island offering a solid combo of archaeological sites and contemporary adventures. “There’s a beach for everything here,” Zissimos notes. “Agios Georgios is known for windsurfing, while Mikri Vigla is the place for kitesurfing.” In between, Zissimos can arrange guided visits to the Temple of Demeter and the Portara, the 2,500-year-old marble gate that stands at the entrance to Naxos Harbor. His preferred place to stay is Villa Marandi Suites , with its whitewashed ocean-view rooms.

After breakfast, catch a high-speed ferry (90 minutes) to Santorini, then check in to the cliff-top Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection . Spend the next day on a sailing excursion, complete with snorkeling stops. Zissimos can also set up wine tastings and recommend hikes, like the coastal path from Fira to nearby Imerovigli, with its jaw-dropping views of the caldera. Zissimos suggests leaving time for dinner in the ever-in-demand village of Oia, known for its sunsets. From there, ferry or fly back to Athens for the trip home.

Something Less Expected, Planned by Christos Stergiou of TrueTrips

P Tomlins/Alamy

The capital is a must-see, Stergiou says, “because its classical history has so distinctly influenced modern thought.” He suggests a guided tour that takes in both the ancient and the contemporary, with visits to the Acropolis Museum and the Temple of Olympian Zeus as well as landmarks around central Syntagma Square, including the Greek Parliament. Conveniently, his hotel pick, Hotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection Hotel , is located on the same square. “It’s the grande dame of Athenian hotels,” Stergiou says.

Izzet Keribar/Getty Images

From Athens, head for Patmos, “an island that exudes a unique aura thanks to its seemingly untouched natural beauty,” Stergiou says, adding that it’s a Christian pilgrimage site, as it is believed to be the place where the Book of Revelation was written. His favorites include the village of Chora, a UNESCO World Heritage site and “one of the best-preserved medieval settlements in the Aegean.” Stergiou can also arrange for private boat excursions for sightseeing, swimming off uncrowded beaches, and dining in a hyperlocal family-run restaurant. His go-to hotel is close to his heart: the Petra has been in the Stergiou family since 1989. The 11-suite inn is now part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Courtesy of Cosme, A Luxury Collection Resort

After a late checkout, hop aboard the overnight ferry from Patmos back to Athens — in a private cabin, of course. In the morning, it’s an easy one-hour flight to Páros, a place Stergiou calls “up-and-coming, or maybe already there.” Make your way, with a guide, to the island’s north and the Environmental and Cultural Park of Páros. The area “is filled with fascinating attractions, including the old shipyard and the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Detis, built right above the sea.” Check in at Cosme, a Luxury Collection Resort , where Stergiou likes the Aether suites, with their sea views. Spend the rest of your time either lounging on Páros’s sandy beaches or making day trips to nearby islands like Antiparos, before taking the ferry (from 90 minutes) over to Santorini.

Ståle Eriksen/Courtesy of Canaves Oia Epitome

“It’s not exactly under the radar,” Stergiou notes of Santorini, “but with the right guides, you can still tap in to the more traditional side of the island.” He recommends spending one day exploring Assyrtiko vineyards, such as Domaine Sigalas; he also suggests a guided walk through Oia, the picturesque if popular village that still conceals a few lesser-known corners. As for where to stay, the Canaves Oia Epitome strikes the right balance between proximity to the island’s best restaurants and seclusion — particularly when you’re booked in a one-bedroom pool villa. Stergiou suggests one last night back at the Grande Bretagne before your flight home.

Off the Tourist Trail, Recommended by Mina Agnos of Travelive

Joanna Kalafatis/Alamy

Start in Athens, Agnos says, “but unless you’ve never been to the Acropolis, I’d suggest instead a tour of the stunning archaeological site of Cape Sounion, south of the city, where there are spectacular sunsets.” Spend another day on a guided tour of the city’s cafés and ouzeri, low-key bars that serve the anise-flavored spirit along with platters of meze. Agnos loves the centrally located and newly opened hotel Xenodocheio Milos , from the group behind the Estiatorio Milos restaurants.

Spiros Papadakis/iStockphoto/Getty Images

Your next stop is Sérifos, “a Cycladic island that has some of the most stunning beaches in Greece, including sandy Psili Ammos, which is often on lists of Europe’s best,” Agnos says. More rugged and lesser-known than nearby spots such as Mílos, it’s nevertheless easily accessible by ferry (from two hours). Agnos suggests taking time to explore the island’s mythological sites, such as the ancient construction known as the Throne of the Cyclops, before spending time swimming or hiking. She recommends the Hotel Rizes overlooking the port.

Emi Cristea/iStockphoto/Getty Images

From there, it’s onward by ferry (from 6 1⁄2 hours) to Naxos, the beachy island that’s also a favorite of Zissimos. For her part, Agnos recommends the island’s many hikes (like a half-day round-trip from the village of Chalki) and can also arrange for cooking or pottery classes. Stay at the hilltop 18 Grapes , with its two pools and views of the sea, or Naxian on the Beach , which has 10 seafront suites.

Athina Psoma/Alamy

From Naxos, it’s an easier ferry (from 90 minutes) west to Sífnos, a less-visited Cycladic island with a growing reputation for food. “It’s famous in Greece for having some of the country’s best culinary experiences,” Agnos explains, as it’s the birthplace of distinctive dishes such as revithada, a chickpea stew, and mastelo, red-wine-braised lamb. The island also has its share of hikes, from easy three-mile loops to challenging nine-milers. Agnos recommends a stay at the Elies Resorts , on Vathi Beach.

6. Explore Mamma Mia’s Destinations

A view of a beach in Skopelos Island with a lot of green two fishing boats and two yaghts taken from a drone.

This is probably the most fun adventure you can indulge yourself in while visiting Greece in May! The popular film ‘Mamma Mia’ was filmed on the islands of Skopelos and Skiathos in the Sporades group and Damouchari village in eastern Pelion.

A sandy beach called Kastani in Skopelos with a lot of trees taken from a drone.

The main shooting of the film took place in Skopelos: the wedding chapel is Agios Ioannis in Kastri, and the beach is in Kastani.

A beach with a small boat and whitewashed houses beside the sea in Skiathos Island.

Mamma Mia in Skiathos was filmed in the old port next to the picturesque Bourtzi (the scene with the boat at the beginning of the film). The third location is in Pelion , in Damouchari’s tiny port village and this is where Meryl Streep dives from the platform, while all the ladies sing with her the ‘Dancing Queen’ while walking down the steps.

To visit the Sporades islands you need to go to Volos port and from there take the ferries to Skopelos or Skiathos. Book your ferry transfer with FerryScanner .

Events to Participate in May

  • Athens Street Food Festival , with recipes from Greece and all over the world.
  • Every May at Skiathos the popular match race sailing of the Skiathos Palace Cup takes place.

What to Wear in Greece in May

Young woman sitting in front of sea in Milos island.

May’s highest temperatures vary between 22.8 and 30.2 C and the lowest between 11 and 18 C. For this kind of weather, you need to pack a smart combination of summer (t-shirts and shorts) and warmer clothes for cooler nights or a sudden change of weather.

I would suggest a smart bikini bottom that you can combine with different tops for the beach. Another essential item is Spyder Women’s Encore Fleece Jacket (amazon), warm, classy, and convenient for any outdoor activity or the chillier nights in Greece.

Destination Must-See's

Greece ms1

This is the most spectacular destination in the Mediterranean and holds the most prehistoric settlement in the region. The ancient town of Akrotiri was once destroyed and consequently preserved by a volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C. The excavation site of this city is known as the “Minoan Pompeii.” But perhaps the island’s greatest draws are its vineyards, whitewashed chapels, volcanic cliffs, and famous wines of Santorini.

Greece ms2

Known as the “whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades islands” or the “Island of the Winds,” it is said that the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. It also gets its name from the grandson of Apollo - “Mykonos.” In the island’s capital town you will find the church, town hall, castle, the Archaeological, Folklore, and Maritime Museums, and a shopper’s paradise – Matoyianni Street.

Greece ms3

Athens is the capital city of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. It is home to many celebrated ancient monuments including the imposing Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Gate – the symbolic entrance to the city. It also has the charming Plaka neighborhood which has been without interruption since antiquity.

Greece ms4

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C. You can walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium, witness amazing sculptures at the museum, or even attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

Destination Must-Do's

Greece md1

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Greece md2

Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. The site includes two sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings that were mostly intended for sports. The earliest finds in Delphi date back to 4000 B.C. from the Korykeion Andron, a cave where the first rituals took place. The ruins are filled with an enormous amount of history and beauty.

Greece md3

Greek Olive Farm:

Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean diet, and Greece is a major grower and producer of olive products. A visit to a Greek olive farm can provide a taste of Greek culture and serve as a window into everyday life in the country. Tours, tastings, meals, and cooking classes hosted at olive farms are all wonderful options on the table when venturing into Greece’s countryside.

Greece md4

Travel back in time with a visit to Athens’s old city – the Plaka. The hilly cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings housing small shops, sidewalk cafes and family-owned restaurants making this neighborhood Athens’ crowned jewel. The neighborhood comes alive at night. The alleyways fill with music and dancing and locals and visitors alike dine on their favorite traditional dishes.

Expert Advice

Getting around is easier than you would expect. Greeks can speak English enough to assist travelers, and street signs are in both Greek and English.

Greece e2

Much of your trip may focus on the ancient past yet I suggest you also take time to explore the vibrant traditions that still live in today’s Greek culture.

Greece e3

Greece is a welcoming destination year-round. Consider visiting October through May to beat the summer bustle, and with Greece’s 250+ days of sunshine in an average year, don’t forget your sunglasses.

Accommodation was excellent. Fantastic hotels. Our guide was very knowledgable but did sometimes go into too much detail and overloaded us a bit on all the greek mythology. She was lovely though. Driver Nicko was lovely also although did go very fast through the winding roads. He did slow down after we asked him to and told him we were scared.

This was a tour of a lifetime! If you like small, personal tours, this is it. George took us to all the major sites and then to area where only locals go. We never would have found some of the places and experiences on our own. He took care of everything for us. Every meal was different and delicious. Stevie, who guided us around the Archeological sites was extremely knowledgeable and brought it all to life with her many stories and humor. If you want to have an in-depth view of the Peloponnese, book this tour now.

The Labyrinth of Crete

We were picked up from Heriklion and taken to our hotel. Hotel was good, my only comment is that we would have preferred to pay a little extra and gone all inclusive as we could only have food in the evening meal which also included water that we had to pay for. However, hotel its self was very good and plenty of shops to look at on the road. Bus stop just opposite hotel took you to Heraklion for about E3. All Tours picked up from the hotel as specified. boat trip and lunch was good. Trip to knossos was very informative and ticket was also valid for the museum in Heraklion, which we visited in the afternoon. The safari trip was fantastic. Jason our guide was funny and knowledgable. We learnt a lot about the villages in the mountains, saw the sunken village, visited a goat herder and watched cheese being made then tried them with raki. Amazing Day especially travelling on the roads up the mountains. Very good value for money.

Very professionally organised ,rate it 0 out of 10

Greece Discovery Tour Tour

Greece Discovery Tour

Overall my 10 day trip of Greece was a wonderful vacation. When we arrived at the Athens airport our transportation to our hotel did not show up. So we needed to call Travel Zone who instructed us to take a taxi. We did get reimbursed for the cost of the taxis but this was a very stressful way to start our vacation. When we meet with our travel representative Effie for the first time on day 0 she informed us of the cost of 45 Euros per person for monument fees. I could not find any information which was previously sent to us outlining this extra cost. I did not understand why this extra charge was not built in to the cost of the entire trip and prepaid prior to our departure. I was forced to use Euros which I needed for my vacation. Outside of the above our travel guide on the 4 day tour of Greece was very knowledgeable, well spoken, kind and considerate. The tour bus “GO Tours” was very comfortable and the bus driver was very competent. All the hotels were very satisfactory and the included breakfast and dinner were very good. The entire tour ran on time and our punctuality was stressed from the beginning. Overall I am pleased with my selection of this 10 day guided tour of Greece from Tour Radar, Fez Travel and Travel Zone. I feel that my limited time in Greece was spent very efficient, the dinner reservations for Xmas eve and New Years Eve recommended by our guides were excellent. Thank you

Splendid service! The tour to the small Delos island was a unique experience. This island is uninhabited and it was one of the most sacred places in ancient Greece. The archeological site is excellently preserved an the ruins are almost intact.

We did the Andros self guided walking hol . Cannot really find fault with virtually anything, the stuff from Explore was incredibly detailed, accomodation was very good, routes also good. The last accomodation at Agios Petros was very good but in a slightly 'No man's land' area. It was a fair distance to any choice of Tavernas & a mini market along a rather busy & in some places narrow road.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Greece

Loved the experience! Great people, swimming spots and got to experience a lot of different islands.
Travel to/from Athens + link taxi were great. The tour itself was good but demanding - about 12 hours each day, either visiting a venue of travelling (not a little of which had to be in evening darkness at this time of year). Tour guide had truly encyclopaedic knowledge of each of the sites visited.
Mia our leader gets 10/10! We were lucky to have her as our guide. She made everything easy and we saw so much in a short time. This has been a memorable trip. It's my first Intrepid tour. I will definitely be doing more and will recommend them to my friends!! Thanks Intrepid

Greece posts new tourism record in 2023 despite fires

Greece posts new tourism record in 2023 despite fires

ATHENS — Greece in 2023 posted a new record for tourism, the central bank said Wednesday, despite a prolonged heatwave and a series of destructive wildfires that necessitated thousands of evacuations.

Over 32.7 million people visited the country last year, the Bank of Greece said in releasing preliminary figures, despite the wave of wildfires around the country that left at least 26 dead.

In some areas, temperatures exceeded 46 degrees Celsius (114.8 Fahrenheit).

Tens of thousands of visitors had to be evacuated on the islands of Rhodes and Corfu in July. A month later, fires devastated a key national park near the border with Turkey.

Massive floods then struck central Greece in September.

In 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign arrivals were at a then record of 31.3 million.

Revenue also set a new milestone with nearly €20.5 billion ($22.1 billion) compared to €18.15 billion in 2019.

Compared to 2022, EU traveler flows rose 15.6 percent while non-EU arrivals were also up by 20.8 percent.

The bank will release final figures in April.  — Agence France-Presse

There is a saying that when God made the earth, he saved the best for Greece. There are few places on the planet that have more beauty, more spectacular scenery, from mountains to islands to rivers and canyons, than the land of Greece.

Learning-intensive activities may include:

Experience ancient Greece, where the headquarters will be at Cosmovision Center. Visit Parliament, Syntagma Square, The Plaka, Acropolis, the 2004 Olympic Stadium, The Agora, Monastiraki Square, and Mars Hill. Experience the antiquities of Mycenae and Corinth.

Experience contemporary Greece. Thessaloniki is a busy, vibrant city that is Greece’s second major economic, industrial, commercial and cultural center as well as a major transportation hub in southeastern Europe. Its commercial port is of great importance. The city has two state universities that host the largest student population in Greece. Home base in the north may be the beautiful sea-side village of Leptokarya. Additional locations and excursions in the north will include viewing Mount Olympus, Dion, ancient Philippi, the monasteries of Meteora and more.

Talk with local merchants in Thessaloniki and service employees in both urban and rural communities. Shop at the local food market. Meet with community professionals who provide service to the community (i.e., doctor, teachers and school administrators, lawyer, judge). Discuss the difficult economic issues facing Greece with the locals in many locations.

Education & Family

Talk with families in rural and suburban communities to become acquainted with traditional family customs. Visit primary and secondary schools to understand the Greek education system. Examine current social issues through conversation with local citizens of all ages and media. Eat meals in family owned restaurants with local citizens to engage in conversations with the locals and understand more about contemporary Greek life.

Speak with local citizens about their perception of current government, membership in the EU, and understand the role Greece has played in democracy past, present, future and the current role of Greece in global issues and perspectives. Meet with a person from the American Embassy. Visit Greek parliament and hear a presentation by an official representative. Understand the challenges an island nation faces with immigration and migration of many people from Africa and the Middle East to Europe through Greece.

Visit the local Greek Orthodox Church. Speak with the local priest and parishioners. Examine the integration of church and state in Greek culture and society. Visit at least one non-Orthodox church and discuss the role of that religious perspective in Greek society. Visit and study historical sites identified in New Testament writings (i.e., Paul’s journeys). Visit with local missionaries and evangelists and examine the role of evangelism in Greek culture. Engage in helping ministries in Athens to learn up close and personal about the immigration issues facing Greece and evangelical ministries to the illegal immigrants and people migrating from areas of conflict. Talk with people involved in NGOs helping women entrapped in prostitution through poverty or trafficking.

“The Greece CCS program changed my life and how I look at the world. I learned so much about Greek culture, history, and myself. The people we met will forever be on my mind. Greece is an absolutely breathtaking country and an amazing culture. Our guide and our hosts were very kind and gracious when it came to teaching us even simple Greek words. Visiting with Greek students was such an eye opener to culture. Being able to hang out with some of the students in Katerini was a lot of fun. Visiting places that are mentioned in the Bible made the Bible incredibly real to me. The food was delicious! I’m so happy I decided to go to Greece, it really changed how I view the world, and deepened my faith.” Jennifer St. Charles
“I do not know if I will ever feel as beautiful as I felt in Greece. It wasn’t that I felt physically beautiful, but instead, I was a part of something so beautiful that it allowed God to reach to new corners of my soul each day we spent there. The historical setting alone can bring tears to any traveler’s eyes. Standing exactly where Paul stood when he preached the Gospel makes the words jump off the Biblical page and into your heart. I saw the beauty of each Greek person inviting us to share an experience in their country, revealing Greek culture to us — the good and the bad, with hospitable spirits and incredible wit and charm. Dining next to the Aegean Sea with delicious food is very special! The most beautiful thing about Greece is that the people there have so much to teach us, and you will carry their lessons with you forever. You can only fully understand the pure beauty of Greece if you sojourn it yourself!” Sara Burge
“Before coming to Greece, I had this nonchalant attitude about the Greek economic crisis, assuming it was similar to what is happening in America right now. It’s not, it’s much worse. Seeing so much of the U.S.’s future in Greece’s current crisis, I’m faced with a choice. How will I let this knowledge change the way I live I can choose to live in a way that doesn’t allow consumerism. Only in traveling to another country, where consumerism has been the cause of downfall, was I able to so clearly realize this about my own culture and my own life.” Margaret Barley

Best time to visit.

Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 30°-38°C (85°-100°F).

By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes Athens and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs

Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.

Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.

With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine favours simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savour a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavoured ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete) and retsina (white wine flavoured with pine resin).

Geography and environment

Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean and Aegean Sea. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land on Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes and grain for export and local use.

Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands.

History and government

Early history.

The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilisations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas and thought movements.

Recent history

In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognised as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

From public markets and designer boutiques to European chain stores, Greece has every aspect of retail cornered.

If you are in the market for traditional Greek handicrafts, consider supporting the local economy by purchasing goods in the region that produces them. This includes silver from Ioannina; ceramics from Sifnos and Skopelos; and embroidery and lace from Crete, the Ionian Islands, Rhodes and Skiros.

Shopping hours vary throughout Greece. Stores in large cities and tourist areas are typically open from 9 am to 9 pm, while shops in other areas close around 2 or 3 pm and reopen between 6 and 9 pm three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). Most stores are closed on Sundays.

Things to buy in Greece

1. Komboloi (worry beads)

These stress-relieving resin beads are meant to be turned through your fingers as you muse over life. With roots deep in ancient Greek cultural tradition, they make a great souvenir for friends wanting a slice of authentic Greece.

2. Botanical skincare

Greece is home to many brands of premium, organic skincare. Stock up on luxurious olive oil soap or enriching yoghurt-based moisturisers before you head home.

Travel safely and ward off evil by attaching a Mati (an ‘Evil Eye’) to your backpack. They’re cheap, available almost everywhere in Greece and are a great reminder of your travels in the Aegean.

4. Jewellery

Whether you prefer gold, silver, amber resin or colourful beads, Greece has a huge variety of jewellery on offer. Prices are typically lower than in many other parts of the world, so it’s likely you’ll be able to snap up a few bargains.

Festivals and events in Greece

The Greeks have been partying since the dawn of Western civilisation. Take Epicurus – he dedicated his life to seeking out pleasure, creating a philosophy now known as Epicureanism. As you travel through Greece you’ll encounter religious celebrations – Greek Orthodox is the main player here – that span the nation, as well as smaller celebrations that are regional affairs or isolated to particular islands. Expect food, drink, dancing and music, and plenty of throwbacks to the ancient Greeks. The only Greek tragedy is that you can’t fit every festival in.

When is the best time to visit Greece?

Greece is best experienced outside of winter for most travellers. The best time of year depends on what kind of holiday you’re after – whether you’re more interested in soaking up the island sun or ancient history.

Is it safe to visit Greece?

Greece has historically been a very safe place to visit though petty crime, like pickpocketing, can be an issue in well-touristed areas. Travellers should remain alert when visiting crowded places and keep an eye on their belongings.

Do you need a visa for Greece?

Greece is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Greece, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Greece.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Greece?

There is not a strong tradition of tipping in Greece, particularly among the locals, but it’s become expected that tourists leave small tips while travelling through the country.

What is the internet access like in Greece?

You’ll be able to find wi-fi at most hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the well-touristed areas of Greece. Alternatively, you can pick up a local SIM card with a data package for continued access.

Can I use my mobile phone in Greece?

If you wish to use your mobile phone while in Greece and you are not from an EU country, you’ll need to pick up a local SIM card or activate global roaming before you leave home.

What are the toilets like in Greece?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Greece. You may need to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some areas. Keep in mind that the Greek plumbing system isn’t the greatest and you may be asked to put toilet paper in the bin rather than flushing it.

What will it cost for a...?

Greece’s unit of currency is the euro:

  • A takeaway souvlaki or gyros = EUR € 3-6
  • Bottle of wine from the supermarket = EUR € 5–8
  • Meal in a local cafe = EUR € 15
  • Meal in a nice restaurant = EUR € 20+
  • Ticket for the Acropolis (including other ancient sites) = EUR € 10-20
  • Domestic beer (Mythos or similar) at local bar = EUR €3-4.50
  • Espresso coffee = EUR €1.50

Can I drink the water in Greece?

Drinking the water in Athens and Thessaloniki is safe unless otherwise marked. On the islands, however, the water may not be suitable to drink.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Greece?

Credit cards are widely accepted in  Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.

It’s still worth having some euros on hand, if only to tip the bartender at your favourite island bar and guarantee quick service all evening.

What is ATM access like in Greece?

ATMs can be easily found in cities and towns across Greece, including on the Greek Islands.

What is the weather like in Greece?

Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Greece is one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ holiday destinations in the world, with a long history of same-sex relationships dating back to Sappho, the Greek poet, whose home island of Lesvos has become a pilgrimage site for lesbians. Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognised since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Greece accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Though access to sights and hotels has improved in Athens over recent years, Greece is a difficult destination for travellers with disabilities. It’s a hilly, rocky place covered in cobblestones, particularly on the islands, and the economic situation has meant that there are minimal public funds to improve the situation.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Greece?

What to pack for Greece will depend on where you're going and what time of year you decide to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential all year round, as is a jumper in case a cool wind blows.

If you visit in summer, you’ll need light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear and sandals.

If you’re heading to the mountains on the mainland, it’s best to be prepared for everything as the weather can change quickly.

What are some common phrases to learn before travelling to Greece?

Greek is a very difficult language to learn. However, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals, but it'll allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you meet along the way.

How many islands are there in Greece?

There are roughly 6,000 islands and islets in Greece, of which only about 200 are populated. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of fascinating sites.

How will I travel around Greece?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Greece, you may find yourself travelling by:
