15 Fantastical Time Travel Romance Books

Last Updated on November 29, 2023 by Louisa

Time travel has always been something that’s both fascinated me and intrigued me. Paired with romance, and you’re on to a winning romance trope!

Time travel love stories can be truly enthralling as love is explored between characters across different periods and places.

As readers, we have often been whisked away to faraway moments in history beyond our imagination and knowledge, whether in the past to 17th-century Scotland or the future when Martians have conquered the earth.

And this makes time travel romance books so gripping for me; it’s not just the romance story but what I learn about history and cultures in a time beyond the one I know.

If you’re looking for a special time travel romance book that combines creative imagination, history, and love, then you’re going to love these 15 books…

What To Expect From Time Travel Romance Books?

Time travel romance books are known to combine elements of science fiction, adventure, and romance.

What I love about this genre is there are no limits. You can soar into a dystopian future, or back in time to a regency period.

Wherever your time travel plot takes you, you can expect to be taken on an imaginative journey where love transcends time and space.

These books often feature strong-willed characters from different eras or dimensions, who find themselves drawn to each other even though they are separated by time or circumstance.

Being from different generations and time periods, there are often cultural clashes, and different opinions on values, morals, or ways of courtship.

The character dynamics are one of the biggest reasons to read a time travel romance book, and they will be sure to have you questioning your own values and morals in today’s world.

Best Time Travel Romance Books

Now you know a little bit about the main features of the genre, it’s time to show you my favorite fantastic time travel romance books to leave you wishing time travel was real.

1. A Highlander For Hannah – Mary Warren

A Highlander for Hannah (Mystic Falls)

A Highlander for Hannah is a warm and easy-going, time-travel book with a slow burn romance story.

As the title suggests, the story is about the heroine Hannah and her budding relationship with Graham. Graham is a Highlander from the 1700s.

Hannah summons Graham with a love spell purchased at a Renaissance Fair. Eventually, Hannah has to listen to her heart and decide if she wants to send Graham back to his own time at the next equinox.

Many readers describe this book as charming. Where many time travel stories can be action-packed, this story is more light-hearted and a book to cozy up with.

2. The River of No Return – Bee Ridgway

The River of No Return: A Novel

The River of No Return is an action-packed read. The story tells of Nick Devanant, who was set to die during the Napoleonic Wars but finds himself in London in 2003.

He eventually settles down as a farmer in Vermont.

Nick is also a part of a time-traveling organization that is involved in intrigue and spying across different eras.

Previously a Lord, Nick navigates his new life while shadowed by The Guild (a guild of time lords), who want him on an assignment in the past.

Nick also meets Julia, a woman from a neighboring estate.

Their romance is explored through all the action and mystery of Nick’s life as a spy and time traveler for the Guild. The mystery and romance are sure to leave you curious.

3. The Winter Sea – Susanna Kearsley

The Winter Sea (The Scottish series, 1)

The Winter Sea tells the story of Scottish author Carrie, who treads the fine line between fiction and reality.

As a writer, Carrie starts recounting memories of her characters’ lives. A more imaginative way to explore time travel, this book transports you back to 17th-century Scotland.

The time travel is done as Carrie recollects vivid memories of her book’s fictional characters. However, the reader is left curious as to what memory is, what imagination is, and what reality is.

The book also explores a secretive and tense romance between Carrie and her landlord’s son, Graham.

A more unconventional way to explore time travel, this story jumps back and forth through the visions of the heroine. A book that will spark your curiosity and leave you guessing til the end.

4. Beautiful Wreck – Larissa Brown

Beautiful Wreck

Beautiful Wreck is about a girl who travels back in time and falls in love. Though it’s not anything new in terms of plot, it has been well written and the world-building is excellent.

Ginn is a virtual reality designer who surprisingly finds herself in 10th-century Iceland. Ginn’s current reality is dull as she exists in a future that is desolate and void of the romance she is craving.

The book tells the story of how Ginn surprisingly finds herself in Viking Iceland!

She starts to enjoy the simple and homely life of the village she finds herself in and meets and falls in love with a native Icelandic Viking named Heirik.

Although she finally finds the romance she has always wanted, she learns that love is much more complicated than expected. Henrik is reserved and tormented by what he believes is a curse.

Penetrating his heart and also fighting against forces that try to tear them apart, this time travel romance lives up to the name of its title, a beautiful wreck.

5. A Knight in Shining Armour – Jude Devereux

A Knight in Shining Armor

A Knight in Shining Armour is a classic time travel romance book by author Jude Devereux .

It tells the story of a young woman who falls in love with a real knight from the Elizabethan age in England.

The book unpacks the love between the heroine Douglass, a young teacher, and a medieval knight, Nicholas.

Douglass is in a dating relationship with a doctor who treats her poorly, and only when meeting Nicholas can she experience true love.

Although the book is about finding true love, it also shows that love between people from different decades can be challenging. Nicholas and Douglass are tested when they are separated from each other to go back to their times.

This book will captivate your heart as you become invested in the fight for love between the two main characters.

They fight to discover why Nicholas has come to the current day and how to save his life in the past.

This is a must-read for fans of time travel, romance and adventure genres, as it combines all three in an unforgettable story.

6. What the Wind Knows – Amy Harmon

What the Wind Knows

What the Wind Knows follows the protagonist Anne as she surprisingly finds herself in Ireland in 1921.

The context is war, and we also glimpse Anne’s inner turmoil as she struggles with hurt and navigates the past.

You are introduced to the history of The Irish Revolution in the 1920s and also to a mysterious doctor named Thomas Smith.

The book explores Anne’s struggles as she begins to fall in love with a man who becomes involved in the war.

Readers are mesmerized by Amy Harmon’s poetic writing and ability to capture the love and heartbreak between Anne and Thomas.

What the Wind Knows brilliantly weaves history, love, and social commentary into one book.

7. In A Holidaze – Christina Lauren

In a Holidaze

In A Holidaze is a different take on time travel where the main character Maelyn (Mae) is stuck in a time loop.

She travels back in time, but again and again. She is given a chance to re-live the past as she sees fit.

The book’s romance is not too heavy as it’s about Mae’s budding crush on her friend Andrew. Reliving the past gives her the courage to express how she feels about him finally.

Set during the Christmas season, it is also festive. This is a friends to lovers romance book with a story that is great for a casual, fun, and upbeat read.

8. Before the Coffee Gets Cold – Toshikazu Kawaguchi

Before the Coffee Gets Cold: A Novel (Before the Coffee Gets Cold Series Book 1)

This is a charming story about a coffee house in Tokyo that allows people to travel back in time.

It follows the story of four people who want to travel back in time.

Examining the reasons we love Before the Coffee Gets Cold provides insight into the motives behind love.

One story follows a wife as she travels to the past to meet her husband again and explores love with sincerity and honesty.

Time travel in this book is not without its rules. Time travelers must return to the present in a stipulated time, and their journeys prove interesting.

A moving and emotional read, Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s novel is for those who want to dive deeper into time travel and deeper into love.

9. Time and Again – Jack Finney

Time and Again

Time and Again is not only a love story between the main character Simon and Julia but a love story about New York…

The story tells of a 1970s man Simon traveling back to 1882 to solve a mystery plaguing his heart.

This is one of the historical time travel love stories that is also an ode to the city in which it is set. New York is the third love in this book, with the author Jack Kinney capturing the city in its early years.

His writing is gripping and makes it feel like you have been transported back to New York.

The romance is also a tale of choosing to follow the head or the heart, as Simon is torn between the present and the past.

10. Ruby Red – Kerstin Gier

Ruby Red (The Ruby Red Trilogy, 1)

Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier is a witty and lively story of young Gwen who lives in London but soon learns that she can time travel.

A time travel gene runs through her family, although she does not expect to be someone who can time travel.

Soon she is catapulted into time travel suddenly and an unexpected romance. To tell you who the romance is with would spoil the book. You would have to find out by yourself.

The book is fun and an excellent read for younger readers.

The heroine is 16 years old, and we see the world through her eyes. Described as a clever story, Ruby Red is the easy-going read for your next pick-me-up book.

11. In Five Years – Rebecca Serle

In Five Years: A Novel

In Five Years is a time-travel romance that fast-forwards to the future!

The main character Dannie finds herself 5 years in the future (through a vision, or is it a reality?), living a life she did not anticipate. She is living with a random man who is not her current fiance.

The book follows Dannie as she unpacks her life 5 years in the future.

A future she is not familiar with but one with desirable possibilities. In this book, time travel is a tool that helps her to ask, what does she want?

It leaves the reader also wondering, what if I could get a picture of my future? Would I change anything?

The author’s writing style is poetic and evocative, with descriptions that transport you to different times and dimensions.

12. Somewhere in Time – Richard Matheson

Somewhere In Time

Somewhere in Time is a beautiful story of love that lasts the test of time and different periods.

It explores the complications that exist for a modern man as he falls in love with a famous actress in San Francisco in 1896.

The author, Richard Matheson, writes this book intricately and can describe the love between the two characters with warmth.

We learn about love at first sight and are taken away by the chemistry between the two main characters.

The time travel aspect is a unique and interesting vehicle that drives the plot, but at its core the story is about love, sacrifice, and second chances.

This book is also excellent for anyone who loves reading books about historical America and San Francisco.

13. More of Us to The West – Trinity Dunn

More of Us to the West (The Adrift Series)

More of Us to The West tells of heroine Alaina’s budding romance with Jack as they are both stranded on an island after their plane crashes.

The only problem is that Alaina is already married to Chris.

She struggles to make sense of her new romance and how Jack and she ended up stranded on an island, along with 11 other strangers.

The reader is torn between the past and the future as Alaina tries to make sense of her heart as she is torn between Chris and Jack.

The book also lures you with a mystery you will be dying to solve, making it hard to put it down.

14. Return Once More – Trisha Leigh

Return Once More

Return Once More tells of 16-year-old Kaia, part of a time-traveling group known as the Historians.

Set in the future where humans live on other planets, Kaia grows up quickly as she is taught to be a Historian.

She is tasked with going back in time to witness important events.

Young and brave, Kaia is lucky enough to be told who her “True One” is. Learning that her true one is her soulmate, she is eager to meet him.

This story explores Kaia’s relationship with her “True One,” Caesarion. Caesarion happens to be Cleopatra and Caesar’s son from the past!

Expect nothing less than a creative and original narrative set in the future but also an exotic past.

This book does a great job of depicting a romance across two different cultures and timelines.

15. A Thousand Pieces of You – Claudia Gray

A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird, 1)

A Thousand Pieces of You joins heroine Marguerite as she travels through time and a different universe. Marguerite is on the hunt to solve a mystery close to her heart.

Marguerite’s parents are the inventors of the Firebird, the machine that allows her to jump from one exciting universe to another.

While focused on her mission, she finds love along the way in the most unexpected places!

This book does a great job of exploring the heart of a young girl keen on an adventure but also open to love.

The Best Books About Vikings

' src=

One of the most fascinating people in history, I was excited to put together this reading list of the best books about Vikings. The Vikings were a seafaring people from the late eighth to early 11th century who hailed from the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. They are known for their naval raids and conquests, particularly in Britain, Ireland, and other parts of Europe. The Vikings were skilled warriors and skilled craftsmen, and they are also known for their advances in shipbuilding and navigation. They established several important trading centers, such as Dublin and York, and their influence can still be seen in the cultures and languages of the areas they settled.

There are many books about Vikings that cover a wide range of topics, including their history, culture, and way of life. Some of the best books about Vikings offer insights into their daily life, including their diet, clothing, and social structure. Other books delve into the more violent aspects of Viking culture, including their raids and battles. Still, others focus on the cultural and artistic achievements of the Vikings, such as their poetry, literature, and metalworking. All of these books can provide a deeper understanding of the Viking people and their place in history.

Let’s dive into our reading list of the best books about Vikings…

The sea wolves: a history of the vikings by lars brownworth.

time travel viking books

In “Sea Wolves,” Lars Brownworth explores the legendary world of the Vikings and their impact on history. In AD 793, Norse warriors invaded the English isle of Lindisfarne and started a series of raids, conquests, and battles throughout Europe and beyond. The Vikings, known as “sea-wolves,” plundered and colonized much of the British Isles, sacked the continental capitals of Paris and Aachen, and even clashed with the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople.

But there is more to the Vikings than just their reputation for violence and conquest. They were also skilled merchants and explorers who founded Dublin, established a vast trading network, and settled in places like Iceland. They even introduced a form of trial by jury to England and were known for their strong legal system. Brownworth brings these stories to life through the tales of famous Viking figures like Leif the Lucky, who discovered a new world, Ragnar Lodbrok, the scourge of France, Eric Bloodaxe, who ruled in York, and Harald Hardrada, a crafty leader. These and other figures help to shed light on the Viking age, a time that has “grown dark under the cover of night.”

Brownworth is an accomplished author, speaker, and teacher based in Maryland, USA, and is known for his popular and engaging approach to history. His first history podcast , “12 Byzantine Rulers,” was recognized by Apple as one of the “top 50 podcasts that defined their genres,” and he has been featured in the New York Times for his ability to bring history to a wide audience.

The Viking HondbĂłk: Eat, Dress, and Fight Like a Warrior by Kjersti Egerdahl

time travel viking books

In “The Viking HondbĂłk: Eat, Dress, and Fight Like a Warrior,” Kjersti Egerdahl delves into the complex and captivating world of the Vikings, offering a comprehensive guide to their way of life. What Did Vikings Actually Look Like?

It is difficult to say exactly what Vikings looked like, as there are no accurate depictions of them from the time period. Most of what we know about their appearance comes from the artifacts they left behind, such as combs, jewelry, and sculptures. Based on these artifacts and the physical remains of Vikings that have been found, it is believed that they were a fairly tall and physically fit people. Vikings tended to have lighter hair and eyes, although some had darker hair and eyes. They also had a reputation for being well-groomed and taking care of their appearance, with many of them using combs to style their hair and beards. However, it is important to note that the appearance of Vikings would have varied greatly depending on their individual genetics and the part of Scandinavia they came from.

When Did Vikings Come To Britain?

Vikings first came to Britain in the 8th century, and they continued to raid and settle in Britain throughout the 9th and 10th centuries. The Viking raids were often violent and destructive, and they caused great fear and anxiety among the people of Britain. The Vikings eventually began to settle in Britain and established several important towns and cities, including York, Dublin, and the Isle of Man. They also established several powerful kingdoms, such as the Kingdom of Northumbria and the Kingdom of Dublin. The Vikings had a lasting impact on Britain, and their legacy can still be seen in place names, language, and cultural traditions throughout the country.

2,600+ US flights canceled: United, American Airlines resume service after global outage

  • A global IT outage caused delays and cancellations for air passengers around the world.
  • Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems.
  • The aviation sector is hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings.

William Sikora III was supposed to fly from Philadelphia to Detroit on Friday morning.

“We are stuck at this airport,” he posted in a video on X at 6 a.m., zooming in on blue airport screens showing system errors. “United, Delta, America, all this stuff is down. People are just sitting here. The apps still say our flight’s on time because they can’t update information in the apps.”

Air passengers around the world faced delays, cancellations and problems checking in as airports and airlines were caught up in a  massive IT outage  that also affected industries ranging from banks to media companies.

Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

There were over 2,600 flights canceled and nearly 9,200 delays as of 5 p.m. ET, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware . Most airlines were able to resume operations as the morning progressed, but many said they expected disruptions to continue throughout the day.

More on the outage: Global tech outage grounds flights, hits banks and media businesses

Megan Brown said Washington Dulles Airport was surprisingly calm, even as the airline industry was in turmoil. She said the airport was less crowded than usual, making for a quicker-than-expected security screening, and passengers seemed understanding about the disruptions.

"We just took the gamble and came here, and hopefully we’ll leave today,” Brown told USA TODAY by phone from Dulles. “There’s nothing you can do.”

Her family's 8:25 a.m. ET flight to San Francisco was delayed, but they were able to take off within a couple of hours. "A cheer just erupted as the gate agent said we are going to start boarding," she said.

Around the world, airports and airlines advised customers to arrive earlier than normal for flights.

Around 9 a.m. Sikora posted another video showing fellow travelers sitting on the floor and standing in the middle of a crowded Philadelphia International Airport terminal.

“Everyone is in the same boat. Just wandering and sitting,” he told USA TODAY.

Issues online: Instagram may be the best social app to get your flight issues fixed. Here's why.

The cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike blamed the global tech outage on a defect in an update for Microsoft Windows hosts.

“Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected," Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz posted on X . "We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption. We are working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can deliver the services their customers are counting on. As noted earlier , the issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed. There was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts."

The aviation sector was hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings. Airlines rely on a closely coordinated schedule often run by air traffic control. Just one delay of a few minutes can throw off a flight schedule for take-offs and landings for an airport and airline for the rest of the day.

"The issue affected many separate systems, such as those used for calculating aircraft weight, checking in customers, and phone systems in our call centers," United Airlines said in a statement. "After pausing all departures overnight, flights resumed on Friday morning and we are working diligently to get our customers to their destinations."

Story continues below.

Are flights still grounded? How long will flight delays last?

"Ground stops and delays will be intermittent at various airports as the airlines work through residual technology issues," the FAA said, adding that it's working closely with airlines to resume normal operations.

Travelers are advised to contact their airlines and monitor the FAA's website for the latest information.

How to find the reason for flight delay

Customers can ask airlines why their flight is canceled or delayed, but the Department of Transportation confirmed that it considers the delays and cancellations caused by Friday's IT outage to be "controllable" by the airlines. While airlines may say they didn't cause the computer error, it means that the DOT will hold them responsible for upholding the commitments they've made to customers when it comes to policies like rebooking or hotel and meal vouchers as the mess gets sorted out. Every airline's policy is outlined on the DOT customer service dashboard.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics also tracks causes of delays and cancellations.

Airline waivers

Airlines are doing what they can to provide extra flexibility to those affected by the outage.

  • American issued a waiver for affected travelers covering all of its U.S. hubs.
  • Delta issued a waiver allowing all passengers traveling Friday to rebook their flights.
  • Frontier issued a waiver offering rebooking for travelers whose flights were delayed by more than 3 hours. Customers whose flights were canceled may opt for a refund or credit toward future travel.
  • United issued a waiver for select airports so passengers can make changes if their flights are affected, though a United spokesperson told USA TODAY that nearly all of the airline's flights depart or arrive in one of the airports covered by the waiver.
  • Spirit issued a waiver allowing customers who are booked to fly Friday or Saturday through any airport in its network to change their flights at no additional charge.

What happens if my flight is canceled?

Department of Transportation rules  require all airlines to offer customers a refund if their flights are canceled for any reason, but customers may be entitled to additional compensation if a cancellation is within the airline's control.

What should I do if my flight is delayed?

If your flight is experiencing a long delay, the Transportation Department suggests asking airline staff if they will pay for meals or a hotel room.

The DOT dashboard reflects airlines' official policies, but many carriers handle compensation for delays on a case-by-case basis and may provide vouchers or other benefits in some situations that are not formally covered.

What is considered a significant flight delay?

Each airline defines significant delays differently, but the DOT's dashboard identifies which airlines provide compensation for controllable delays of 3 or more hours.

For instance, all major U.S. carriers are supposed to provide a meal voucher for flights delayed by at least 3 hours for reasons within their control. Additionally, Alaska, JetBlue and Southwest offer credit or a travel voucher when a controllable delay "results in passenger waiting for 3 hours or more from the scheduled departure time," according to the dashboard.

How to file compensation for a delayed flight

Travelers seeking monetary compensation for delayed flights should file a claim with their respective airlines. Passengers seeking other types of compensation, like frequent flyer miles, may be able to request those through the airline's customer service.

How to Avoid Paying Vacation Rental Fees

It takes some work to find a rental you can book directly, but the payoff can be significant.

An illustration depicts a row of small pink houses with green doors and palm trees in the background. A man with a suitcase on wheels and wearing shorts and a baseball cap, enters one.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

When a $104-a-night vacation rental more than doubles with an $89 cleaning fee and a $42 service fee, it’s time to ask: Is there a better way?

The answer is: partially.

You’re unlikely to get around that pesky cleaning fee — so ubiquitous as to make rental periods of a night or two discouragingly inflationary — but you can save the service fee, which is paid to the booking platform, by making a reservation directly with a host.

Along with the rewards, direct bookings come with some risk. Here’s how to find and vet short-term rental listings that avoid service fees.

The appeal of direct bookings

Booking platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo make money by charging users service fees. Terms can be complex and vary, but experts say they generally run 12 to 16 percent of the total.

“By booking direct, you’re avoiding opaque service fees that platforms overlay on the price,” wrote Tommy Ciaccio, the head of business development for North America at Avantio , which makes software for vacation rental managers, in an email.

Hosts also pay smaller fees to the platforms — Airbnb charges hosts 3 percent — which they can avoid with direct bookings. Many hosts that take direct bookings also mimic the same cancellation policies they maintain with third-party bookings.

In the Marches region of northeastern Italy, Bob Garner rents six apartments on his property named Casal Dei Fichi , where weekly rates start at 950 euros (roughly $1,029), with no cleaning fees. Nearly 90 percent of his bookings are direct, saving thousands of euros annually on third-party fees.

Hosts who do it themselves often worry about destructive guests and verifying their identities, though Mr. Garner said most of his guests are repeat travelers or referrals.

“As we live on site and the guests know that we do, it means that we only get bona fide guests,” Mr. Garner said.

Vetting the host

There are plenty of stories of hosting scams perpetrated on platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo and Booking.com. While those online travel agencies actively try to root out false listings, sending money to a one-off website deserves a degree of skepticism, which requires carefully vetting the host.

Mark Simpson, the founder of England-based Boostly , which designs websites and trains vacation rental owners to drive direct bookings, said that one way to ensure a direct booking website is legit is to look for sites certified by I-Prac , an international certification agency that verifies the legitimacy of rental properties.

Renters must register their reservation with I-Prac and the organization will reimburse the traveler in the event that the property listing is fraudulent.

Renters should also look for transparency when it comes to the host or management company.

“I counsel clients to be more personal,” Mr. Simpson said. “People buy from people and we’re in the hospitality business, so showcase you and your team and show that you’re real and have reviews.”

If a property seems suspicious, take a few screen shots of its photos and conduct a reverse image search on Google, which will turn up the same image wherever it is on the internet.

“Use your communication with the host as your radar,” said Andrew Schorr, the director of product at Hospitable , a global property management software company. “If they’re unresponsive, they might just be unprofessional and not a scam, but that’s not a good sign.”

Renters should also be wary of any host that has a fully nonrefundable booking policy. Even restrictive policies on major platforms usually offer a refund within 48 hours of booking. ( In California , a new law mandates a minimum 24-hour grace period for penalty-free cancellations on hotel and short-term rental bookings as long as they were made 72 hours or more before check-in.) When possible, always pay with a credit card, which provides greater protection in the event of fraud, versus a debit card or money order.

Finding direct bookings

Apart from avoiding scammers, one of the main problems in renting directly from an owner is finding the rental in the first place. Major platforms like Airbnb win on search convenience.

But hosts and property managers, many of whom felt burned during the pandemic when they were forced to issue refunds by booking platforms, are increasingly investing in direct booking tools that allow them to maintain greater control.

Property managers often use search engine optimization to get their website to show up as high as possible in the search results, “so that when guests are searching for rentals in a certain place, their website will be in the top options,” said Mr. Ciaccio of Avantio.

Google encourages vacation rental managers to list properties and prices on its site. Searching for accommodations on Google Travel or Google Maps increasingly turns up vacation rentals as well as hotels and other lodgings. The listings usually link to booking sites, some of which may be direct.

Users can also search for rentals on a traditional platform, find a listing they like and conduct a search for that property to see if it has a dedicated website.

Hosts and managers often drop clues in their listings that users can search for the property directly, said Mr. Simpson of Boostly, including giving the house a name in the description.

He counsels clients to have things like pillowcases personalized with a logo that can appear in listing photos and not break the rules for direct solicitation that third-party platforms enforce. Photos of a kitchen might include a plaque that says, “Best rates for direct bookings.”

“We’re trying to train guests to Google-search the brand,” Mr. Simpson said.

Alternatively, if you’ve stayed at a short-term rental once and would like to return, reach out to the owner, host or manager to see if they will deal with you directly on that or other properties they have, saving everyone third-party fees.

Hosts are happy to pay an online travel agency once, “but not again with the same customer,” said Mr. Schorr of Hospitable.

The same could be said for guests.

Experience Greenland’s Inuit and Viking sheep farms on this stunning trail

Most visitors only get a fleeting glimpse of the country. With more time, travelers can hike past cobalt fjords, verdant pastures, and well-preserved Viking ruins.

A flock of fleeting sheep running to the left of the frame, covering the lower half of the image. Behind the sheep to the left is blue water and to the right a blue, green, yellow and red house sit amongst the fog.

Most visitors rarely experience South Greenland beyond its iceberg-dotted fjords and rugged mountains. Cruise ships whisk away 90 percent of visitors after fleeting glimpses, according to Sarah Woodall, destination manager at Innovation South Greenland . But longer stays offer a unique glimpse into Greenland’s sheep-farm backpacking routes, where modern Inuit communities continue Viking farming traditions from the 10th century.

Travelers can explore nearly 40 sheep farms, nine offering overnight stays in cozy accommodations, within the 134-square-mile UNESCO World Heritage site of Kujataa . With new flight routes and an international airport opening soon in Nuuk, visitors will have greater access to these immersive farm-to-farm hikes that support local communities and offer a more profound connection to this remote landscape.

Greenland’s answer to hut-to-hut hiking

South Greenland’s agricultural roots date back to around 985 C.E. when Vikings arrived with livestock like cows and sheep. Erik the Red, who named Greenland to attract settlers from Iceland, established Brattahlið, now Qassiarsuk, a key stop on today’s sheep-farm route.

A replica of Erik the Red's wooden church surrounded by a stone wall sits near the edge of a cliff. The hill is covered in yellow grass and big rocks with water and mountains peaking through fog in the background.

For nearly five centuries, the Viking farming and hunting society thrived in this remarkably fertile subarctic land, wedged between the Greenland Ice Sheet and the North Atlantic Sea. Around the 15th century, the Vikings mysteriously vanished, possibly due to climate change .

In the late 1700s, Inuit communities revived agriculture, making South Greenland an agribusiness hub. Today, travelers can hike past cobalt fjords, verdant pastures, and well-preserved Viking ruins. The main backpacking route, linking five farm stays via four- to nine-mile hikes, starts in Qassiarsuk, near Narsarsuaq Airport. Here, you can begin your adventure at the Bed & Breakfast Illunnguujuk farm-stay, owned by the grandson of the village’s founder. Tour a reconstructed Viking longhouse and church, immersing yourself in the region’s history before setting off on your journey.

( Learn the art of iceberg chasing in Newfoundland . )

Outfitters like woman-owned Travel by Heart help visitors coordinate agri-trekking logistics, such as ferry transit from Narsarsuaq, reserving meals and beds, and trip duration—usually a few days to a week. Blue Ice Explorer also runs an eight-day journey to four Qassiarsuk-area farms, followed by a ferry and agritourism overnight in Igaliku. This idyllic village was once the religious center of Viking life.

From South Greenland’s largest town, Qaqortoq, reachable via regular ferry services from Narsarsuaq (and soon, a major new Qaqortoq airport , anticipated to open in 2025), travelers can take a boat transfer halfway into Igaliku Fjord to reach two other accommodations, including cabins at Kangerluarsorujuk Sheep Farm and a hostel at Qanisartuut Sheep Farm .

Water streams are blurred in the foreground of the image; a larger body of water separates a larger mountain in the background.

Backpacking between farms offers scenic, heart-pumping hikes. Hosts offer activities like horseback riding, ATV rides, and cultural gatherings known as kaffemik , meals with farm families over local fare like lamb, musk ox, or seafood.

“A lot of guests eat in our home and talk to us; it’s one of the [best] experiences for them to come into our house and see how we live,” says Aviñja Lennert, who runs the icefjord-view Tasiusaq farm and its Sermilik Hostel alongside her husband, a third-generation farmer.

( 22 awe-inspiring images of icy adventures in Greenland .)

The best time for hut-to-hut hiking in South Greenland is from June through September, when the weather is mild and the midnight sun provides extended daylight hours. September also offers the added bonus of witnessing sheep-herding activities and the chance to see exceptional northern lights .

A shifting agricultural landscape

One reason farmers have launched these farm stays is that sheep farming has become less predictable due to climate change. In late October 2023, for example, a surprise early snowstorm dumped three feet of snow on the region, trapping many sheep that had yet to be collected. “They lost hundreds of sheep,” Woodall says, noting other new weather patterns, such as long and heavy rains that damage the grazing fields, are “hurting a lot of the farmers economically.”

It’s not just Greenland. Sheep-husbandry entrepreneurs across the North Atlantic, including communities in Greenland, Norway, Scotland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands, joined forces in a collaborative, sustainable tourism program called Wool in the North from 2021 through 2023. The Nordic Atlantic Cooperation ( NORA )-funded initiative helped sheep farmers join forces to create wool-themed slow-tourism experiences centered on sustainability, art, textiles, and nature.

( This is one of the last places on Earth to explore an ancient Arctic life .)

After three years of planning, the Wool in the North offerings will debut in sheep-farm destinations in 2024, from a 10-day culture and crafting trip through the Faroe Islands to art- and textile-inspired spring and autumn excursions through North Iceland . South Greenland, in particular, has a lot to celebrate this year. In addition to its forthcoming wool tourism developments , 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of Qassiarsuk’s founding, a milestone that will bring concerts, exhibitions, and storytelling to the village all summer.

Mass IT outage: here's a list of companies and operations affected

  • A huge global IT outage is disrupting flights, banks, retailers, and media outlets.
  • The widespread disruptions have been linked to an issue with the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
  • Operations affected include airlines in the US and Europe, supermarkets, and some 911 lines.

Insider Today

A mass IT outage has hit flights, banks, retailers, and media outlets around the world.

The issues appear to be linked to the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike .

Microsoft also acknowledged the issue in an X update early Friday, writing, "Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions."

Here are some of the companies and operations affected.

Numerous airlines grounded flights early Friday morning, including the big three US carriers: United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines. In statements, they all cited technology issues.

Delta and American had both canceled their ground stops by 7 a.m. ET.

A United spokesperson told Business Insider that it was holding all aircraft at their departure airports while it works to restore systems. "Flights already airborne are continuing to their destinations," they added.

American has blamed the issues on CrowdStrike, saying they were because of a "technical issue with Crowdstrike that is impacting multiple carriers," according to BBC News.

The budget airlines Frontier, Allegiant, and Spirit also issued ground stops which were later canceled.

Frontier's was issued on Thursday night. "Flight operations are currently being impacted by a major Microsoft technical outage," it said in a statement.

Spirit said it was unable to rebook affected customers because of the outage.

Disruption also extended to Europe. The continent's largest airline, Ryanair, advised passengers to arrive early as the outage caused "disruption across the network."

KLM also said it had to "largely suspend operations" as the outage made "flight handling impossible."

British Airways, Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, and Qantas were also among those who said they were affected.

According to a Facebook post from Alaska State Troopers , emergency lines in the state are also affected.

The post said: "Due to a nationwide technology-related outage, many 911 and non-emergency call centers are not working correctly across the State of Alaska."

"We appreciate your patience and will update you when we know more," the statement added.

The major UK airports Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton have reported issues, with some warning of delays and disruption.

Related stories

An X post from Gatwick Express , a train service for the airport, said the company was unable to access driver diagrams at certain locations, "leading to potential short-notice cancelations, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks."

A spokesperson for Belfast International Airport confirmed to BI that whiteboards were being used to handwrite flight information before systems were later restored. Whiteboards were also used at Singapore Changi Airport.

Hospitals and doctors' surgeries

Several hospitals and doctors' practices appear to have been affected by the outage.

In the UK, the NHS' EMIS system, which doctors use to book appointments, view patient notes, order prescriptions, and make referrals, appears to be having issues .

A spokesperson for the NHS told BI in a statement: "The NHS is aware of a global IT outage and an issue with EMIS, an appointment and patient record system, which is causing disruption in the majority of GP practices."

They said that long-standing measures were in place to manage disruption and that there was no known impact on 999 or emergency services, so people should use these services as normal.

"Patients should attend appointments unless told otherwise and only contact their GP if it's urgent, and otherwise please use 111 online or call 111," they added.

Two German hospitals canceled elective operations scheduled for Friday, Reuters reported.

NYCT Subway

Commuters in New York City and DC may also face delays Friday morning.

In an X post, the NYCT subway said: "Train arrival information is unavailable for A/B/C/D/E/F/G/J/M/N/Q/R/Z/Rockaway Park Shuttle/Franklin Av Shuttle due to a worldwide technical outage. Train service is unaffected."

The post said the tech outage also impacted Subway officials' ability to see train locations.

Broadcasters

Sky News also appears to have been hit by the outage. The UK news channel has been showing archive footage and briefly displaying an error message.

The news site appears to be up and running at the time of writing.

London Stock Exchange

The London Stock Exchange's website was also experiencing issues.

"RNS news service is currently experiencing a third-party global technical issue, preventing news from being published on www.londonstockexchange.com ," the company said in a statement.

"Technical teams are working to restore the service. Other services across the group, including London Stock Exchange, continue to operate as normal," it continued.

Retailers and fast-food giants

Bloomberg reported that McDonald's Japan suspended about a third of its stores in the country on Friday. The issue was with the stores' cash registers, the report said.

The grocery-store chain Woolworths told BI that some stores had "been impacted as a result of the global IT issue." All but six stores were open for business, but some had fewer functioning checkouts.

Delivery delays

FedEx and UPS are warning of delivery delays because of the outage.

In a statement on the company's website , FedEx said it was experiencing "substantial disruptions throughout our networks due to a global IT outage experienced by a third-party software vendor." The company said parcels due to be delivered on Friday might face delays.

A UPS spokesperson told BI that it continues to operate effectively but there may be some service delays due to third-party outage "impacting some UPS computer systems in the U.S. and Europe."

Some US state driver services are down

Drivers in some states are unable to access services because of the outage.

Georgia's Department of Driver Services posted on X that "due to the global Microsoft/Crowdstrike outage, DDS services are unavailable at this time."

Tennessee's Department of Safety and Homeland Security said some Driver Services Centers may not be able to process transactions, according to a post on X.

North Carolina's Department of Motor Vehicles driver license and plate agencies are also impacted and unable to assist customers, according to a CNN report.

Bloomberg reported that at the Ocean Park Marriott in Hong Kong, staff were using pen and paper to check guests in and said the outage was affecting their systems globally.

Marriott International later told CNN in a statement that "certain hotel systems" have been affected.

"We are actively working with our vendors to resolve issues that have impacted certain hotel systems," the company said in a statement to the publication. "We apologize for any inconvenience that guests may experience."

Biden just got covid. What are the latest coronavirus guidelines?

President Biden’s positive coronavirus diagnosis places a spotlight on precautions the public, especially older Americans, can take amid a summer covid wave.

The Washington Post is providing this news free to all readers as a public service.

Follow this story and more by signing up for national breaking news email alerts.

President Biden tested positive for the coronavirus Wednesday, placing a renewed spotlight on covid-19 and the precautions the broader public can take as a summer wave of the disease sweeps over much of the United States.

In a statement , the White House said Biden is experiencing mild symptoms and plans to self-isolate at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., while continuing to work. The president, who previously tested positive for the coronavirus in 2022 , told reporters he was “doing well” after landing at Dover Air Force Base late Wednesday.

Coronavirus levels in wastewater were considered high or very high in 26 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last week, but the nation’s approach to the pandemic has evolved significantly over the years — meaning it can be difficult to determine how best to stay safe. Here’s what to know.

What are the current CDC isolation guidelines?

When sick with symptoms of a respiratory virus, such as the coronavirus, the CDC advises individuals to stay home and isolate until both their overall symptoms have improved and they have been fever-free without using fever-reducing medication for 24 hours.

For five days after that, it recommends taking extra precautions such as wearing a mask, improving air circulation , physical distancing and testing. The CDC also recommends taking these precautions if covid is circulating widely in the community.

People who are asymptomatic do not need to stay home but should take those extra precautions, said Demetre Daskalakis, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

If people do not have a fever, they should still isolate until their overall symptoms have improved for 24 hours, he said.

What if someone in the house has covid but others do not?

The stay-at-home guidance gets trickier when there are others in a household.

In that case, Daskalakis advises people with coronavirus to keep their distance from others if possible and to use additional precautions, such as masking or improving air circulation.

What are the latest vaccines?

The currents coronavirus vaccines were developed with a formula targeting the defunct XBB variants but still offer some protection against the latest variants. An updated vaccine is expected in the late summer or fall.

Staying up to date with coronavirus vaccines “significantly lowers the risk of getting very sick, being hospitalized, or dying from covid-19,” the CDC says .

The CDC recommends adults 65 and older get a second dose of the current coronavirus vaccine, and everyone ages six months and older get the updated vaccine when it is available.

Experts say patients who have not recently been infected or vaccinated should consult their doctors about the trade-offs of getting an outdated shot for protection amid the summer covid wave or waiting for the new version expected to be available in the coming months.

What specific advice do health-care professionals have for senior citizens?

While doctors are seeing far fewer hospitalizations for covid, “older individuals remain at the highest risk” and “still can get quite ill,” Tara Vijayan, an infectious diseases specialist at UCLA Health, wrote in an email, noting that taking antivirals early and getting vaccinated can mitigate that risk.

If an older adult tests positive, Vijayan recommends considering taking Paxlovid , which President Biden took Wednesday, or molnupiravir , which may have similar benefits. Doctors are divided on whether younger, otherwise healthy adults should take Paxlovid.

If people are charged for Paxlovid, which is no longer free, they can apply for support from patient assistance programs to cover out-of-pocket costs, or ask a provider or pharmacist to help.

For older adults looking to protect themselves, Vijayan said it is reasonable to consider masking indoors, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces. She emphasized, however, that close family members are “by far the most common source” of infection.

Vijayan encourages relatives of older adults to take a test if they have signs of an upper respiratory tract infection and stay away from older family members until they are no longer contagious.

What are the current coronavirus variants and how prevalent are they?

These days, most cases are caused by new KP variants, which are part of a group called FLiRT , and LB.1. They are more effective than their predecessors at infecting people who have some immunity from vaccines or previous infections. The new variants do not seem to cause more severe infections and deaths.

The new vaccines under development target the KP.2 strain, which is similar to the other commonly circulating variants.

Preeti Malani, an infectious-diseases physician at the University of Michigan, told The Washington Post earlier this month that the “clinical difference is minor, if any.”

Coronavirus: What you need to know

Summer covid uptick: A summer coronavirus wave has washed over most of the United States, and not even President Biden was spared . The ongoing uptick coincides with the ascendancies of KP variants dubbed FLiRT and the closely related LB.1, which accounted for 85 percent of new cases as of early July, according to CDC estimates.

Combined covid-flu vaccine: A combined coronavirus-influenza vaccine may be on the horizon after Moderna’s shot produced a higher immune response in older adults than separate vaccines for those viruses administered together. Moderna officials say the earliest that the combined vaccine could hit the market is fall 2025, pending regulatory approval.

Covid isolation guidelines: Americans who test positive for the coronavirus no longer need to routinely stay home from work and school for five days under new guidance planned by the CDC. Here are the latest covid guidelines .
