15 Best Things to Do in Shkodra (Albania)

Close to the border with Montenegro , Shkodra in Albania is the point of entry for the sublime natural landscapes in almost every direction from the city. East is Drin River that flows through canyons, right to the west is the Adriatic Sea and its sandy beaches, and northeast are the Albanian Alps where the country’s  tallest peaks can be conquered. For history buffs there’s plenty to catch the eye as Shkodra has been on a key trading post for millennia, and both the Ancient Greeks and Romans settled here. Inside Shkodra you can acquaint yourself with Albanian history and culture, visiting mosques, cathedrals, workshops and photographic archives.

1. Rozafa Fortress

Every civilisation in Shkodra’s history has used this strategic spot on a craggy hill next to the confluence of the Drin and Bojana Rivers. There was an Illyrian stronghold here 2,500 years ago and elements of it were adapted for later fortresses. The Romans also left their mark, but most of the ruins are from Venetian times when the castle was sacked after a siege by the Ottomans in 1478. The castle saw action right up to 1912 when it was defended by the Ottomans against Montenegrin and Serbian forces.

2. Shkodra Historical Museum

This museum is in a sensational location, on a steep hill overlooking the city. The building is a former Venetian merchant’s house, even including authentic stone fortifications. So the Historical Museum has the dual appeal of housing culturally-important artefacts and being historical in its own right. The exhibits are compact and provide detail about ancient activity in the region, the Byzantine era, Ottoman times, right up to the oppressive regime under Enver Hoxha. In the garden seek out the original Venetian stone well and the remnants of a Roman tomb.

3. Marubi Photo Collection

Pietro Marubi was an Italian photographer who fled to Shkodra in the mid-19th century for political reasons. He had supported general Giuseppe Garibaldi, who himself had to flee for America after the failed siege of Rome in 1849. In the course of his career Marubi took some 500,000 photographs, which are archived or on display at this attraction on Muhamet Gollesha. They document 19th-century and early-20th-century life in Shkodra in the most vivid way possible, capturing the dress and social norms of the time. The archive was later curated by the local Kodheli brothers, who adopted techniques and continued taking photographs until Kel Khodeli’s death in 1940.

4. Lake Shkodra

This expansive lake, the largest in the Balkans, forms a natural boundary between Albania and Montenegro. You could rent a bike in Shkodar to get out there, or catch a bus to the western edge of the city and complete the remaining five kilometres on foot. Not far from the border with Montenegro is the Lake Shkodra Resort, which a campsite with chalets and camping grounds offering tent rental right on the shore where the lake is set off by the Albanian Peaks in the distant background. You can hire kayaks here or set off on a hiking trip around the beautiful perimeter of the lake.

5. Shurdhah Island

A day trip southeast of the city is Lake Vau-Dejes, formed when the River Drin was dammed. In the summer you can catch a boat out to Shurdhah Island, almost 400 metres in length and covered with dense vegetation. Climb on shore for an small adventure, discovering the last remaining fragments of Sarda, an ancient city. This was an Illyrian settlement, and later a Roman citadel. In medieval times it was a city famous for its 365 altars and being the seat of Bishops of Sarda and Sapa. Eventually the city was destroyed by the Ottomans, and when the dam was completed the ruins formed an island near the left bank of the Drin.

6. Lake Koman Ferry

Just over an hour east of Shkodra awaits an idiosyncratic experience you’ll never forget.  A voyage on the Lake Koman ferry will give you plenty of material for a true traveller’s tale. It’s a passenger transport connecting Koman with the town of Fierze, but what makes it essential is the way you’ll experience the cinematic scenery surrounding the lake and interact with the locals. The ferry will make regular calls to the shore, taking on farmers and livestock, and at times the vessel will seem precariously overloaded as you pass through mountainous scenery that tumbles down sharply to the water.

7. Albanian Alps

If you’re undeterred by their fearsome name, the Accursed Mountains near the borders with Kosovo and Montenegro offer the most exhilarating natural scenery in Albania. If you drive up the gravel road to Theth you’ll reach the gateway for Maja Jezerce, which is Albania’s highest mountain at 2,694 metres. As you’d expect this is a very remote part of the country, so it’s important to be prepared before setting off on excursions. But with some internet research you’ll be able to get in contact with local businesses offering hiking support, as well itineraries for trips in one of the most dramatic locations you’ll ever visit.

8. Venice Art Mask Factory

This combined workshop and museum is run by Edmond Angoni, an Albanian artisan who emigrated to Italy in the 90s to master the Venetian art of mask-making. Since then he’s made a successful career designing masks for a host of productions and movies, the most famous being Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut in 1999. In recent years he has set up shop in Shkodra and employs many locals in his workshop. You can browse Angoni’s wide array of costume masks, made anything from metal to papier mache. You’ll also be able to see how these masks are created, and get the chance to try designing and building a mask of your own.

9. Shkodra Cathedral

Also known as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, this building was ordained in 1867. One of the remarkable things about the cathedral is that it’s a catholic building in a country with a Muslim majority and where many Christians practice Eastern Orthodoxy. It underlines how Albania is such a meeting point for world religions and emphasises the rebirth or religious freedom after the communist era ended. In 1990 the first Catholic congregation since 1967 was held at St. Stephen’s, and in the early 90s it welcomed both Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.

10. Ebu Bekr Mosque

Shkodra’s main mosque, Ebu Bekr is named after the Ottoman statesman Ebubekir Pasha, who lived in the 17th and 18th centuries. In its heyday the mosque had a respected Madrasa, or religious school, which attracted Muslim scholars from across the region. After the Rozafa Fortress this mosque is Shkodra’s main landmark, and its tall minarets are a useful reference point for way-finding in the city. Despite its Ottoman origins Ebu Bekr underwent renovation after the fall of communism in Albania, giving it a modern appearance.

11. Mes Bridge

Spanning the Khir River five kilometres northeast of Shkoder is this magnificent Ottoman bridge. For starters the environment is almost idyllic, framed by the hills of the Maranai Nature Park, and with evergreen vegetation on the banks of a shallow river that draws swimmers in summer. The Mes Bridge is Ottoman Albania’s largest river crossing, 100 metres-long and dating back to 1770. The river has been crossed at this spot for as long humans have been here, and was on the trade route between Shkodra and Pristina in Kosovo.

A few kilometres south of Shkodra, next to the Adriatic sea, is this compact city that was established in antiquity as the Greek port of Lissus. You can amble around the ruins of this settlement at the town’s archaeology park. Lezha’s prime attraction is the mausoleum of Skanderbeg. For newcomers to Albanian history Skanderbeg is the national hero, Prince of Kastrioti, whose military genius has been praised for keeping the Ottoman Empire at bay in the 1400s. The memorial is a modern portico covering the ruins of the Church of San Nikolas, where Skanderbeg’s tomb is preserved and his weapons are on display.

13. Podgorica

The border is so close that it makes sense to widen your horizons and hop across to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro . The best reason to make the trip is to get a feel for the culture and life of a city that is off the map for many tourists. Podgorica has an easy-going Mediterranean atmosphere, with lively streets, cafes and restaurants. This is best experienced in the Stara Varos, the Old Turkish Town, which has those classic narrow paved streets with lots of twists and turns and sights like a stone Clock Tower from the 1600s.

Also in Montenegro, Ulcinj is on the Adriatic coast and sits on the opposite side of Lake Shkodra to Podgorica. In this region where boundaries are often difficult to delineate it won’t be surprising that Ulcinj is 80% ethnic Albanian. Make the short drive to this coastal resort to visit the beaches that have started to gain international recognition. The are more than 30 kilometres of coastline to explore and 25 different beaches to choose from. One of the best has to be Velika Plaza, a long, wide sandy beach with rolling surf, which can be reached by bus from the centre of Ulcinj.

Albania’s capital is a convenient option for a day trip, less than 100 kilometres south of Shkodra. Tirana is in fact much younger than Shkodra, dating only to the 1600s, but it’s a city that offers important perspective on the Communist era under Enver Hoxa, a dictator in power for four decades. There are soviet buildings, like a grand pyramid built to commemorate Hoxa after his death and a subterranean nuclear bunker that resembles an underground city. You can also board the modern cable-car to Dajti Mountain, which towers over the east of the city and is part of a national park.

Shkodra is situated in a picturesque region that boasts a unique natural setting, characterized by lakes, rivers, and mountains.

Nestled amidst picturesque mountains and adorned with the shimmering waters of Lake Shkodra, the breathtaking natural beauty of Shkodra is a symphony of vibrant flora, cascading waterfalls, and a tranquil oasis that captivates the senses.

To the west of Shkodra lies Lake Shkodra, also known as Lake Skadar or Lake Scutari. It is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula and is shared by both Albania and Montenegro. Its vast expanse covers an area of approximately 370 square kilometers, with a length of about 44 kilometers and a width of 14 kilometers. I spent a few days visiting Shkoder during my trip to Albania and I really enjoyed my time in this fun little city. Shkoder is a laid-back town that acts as a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Albania’s capital city Tirana. I felt safe, welcome, and at home in Shkoder and would travel back there in a heartbeat.

Is Shkoder worth visiting?

In my opinion, yes! Shkoder should be an essential stop on every Albania itinerary.

Shkoder is a beautiful city located in North Albania. It is brimming with natural beauty and cultural charm.

There are lots of things to see and do in Shkoder . While in the city, you can explore its pedestrian streets, visit various museums, or try paddleboarding across Shkodra Lake. The Rozafa Castle sits high above the city and overlooks the nearby Lake Shkoder. It also provides stunning views of Albania’s accursed mountains – which is the best name for a mountain range ever.

In the surrounding area, you can go hiking in the Albanian Alps, visit traditional villages and enjoy the breathtaking views.

Shkoder also offers great food experiences. There’s a variety of restaurants serving up delicious local dishes, as well as international favourites and lots of vegan options.

Although many people simply pass through Shkoder on their way to the mountains or to Montenegro, I think this little city is certainly worth a visit in its own right.

1. Shkoder has a fascinating history

Shkoder is one of the oldest cities in the Balkan region. Located in northern Albania, it has a recorded history that spans over two millennia and has been continuously inhabited since its founding. Its history can be traced as far back as the bronze age!

The city’s rich cultural heritage can be seen through its traditional architecture, monuments, and museums which tell stories from different eras of Albanian history. From ancient Illyrian settlements to Ottoman occupations and Italian rule during World War II – each period has left its mark on the cityscape of Shkoder for visitors to explore today.

2. Shkoder is an ideal stopping-off point between Tirana and Montenegro

Shkoder is super close to the border of Montenegro which makes it an ideal place to stop off before leaving Albania.

From Shkoder, there are minibuses (known as furgons) that travel to Ulcinj in Montenegro.  These are unofficial and don’t have set times. They tend to leave when they have enough passengers to make the trip worthwhile.

The journey takes about 1.5 hours and shouldn’t cost you more than €5. Ask around at your accommodation to figure out where the minibuses leave from. From Ulcinj, you can catch onward buses to Kotor, Budva, and Podgorica. If you rent a car then it is also an easy drive from Shkoder to Budva. 

3. Shkoder has very laid-back vibes

Shkoder is a very laid-back city and definitely has small-town vibes, despite being the largest city in the north of Albania. It’s a whole different atmosphere from what you can expect in Tirana. I enjoyed how quiet the streets of Shkoder are on an evening.

The locals are friendly and will happily help you out with any questions you may have. There’s a relaxed atmosphere in the city which is perfect for just wandering around and exploring. I felt right at home!

4. Shkoder is a perfect place to experience Albania’s cafe culture

Albania’s cafe culture is very much alive and thriving in Shkoder. When I visited, the streets were filled with people enjoying coffee and pastries at the many cafes around town. There are plenty of options to choose from so you won’t have a hard time finding the perfect spot for your morning caffeine and pastry fix!

5. It is a bike friendly city

Shkoder is a very bike-friendly city. It’s small enough that you can get around easily by bike and there are plenty of places to rent bicycles from in the city centre. I borrowed a bike from my hostel and rode along the shore of the lake, which was a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Exploring the city on two wheels is a great way to get off the beaten path and discover some of Shkoder’s best-kept secrets. Plus, you get to enjoy the lovely views of Lake Shkoder at the same time!

6. Shkoder is pedestrian friendly too

In the centre of Shkodra, you will find the pedonale, a pedestrian area in the city centre. The Pedonale in Shkoder is a great place to wander and enjoy a slice of daily life in Albania. The stone walkway is gorgeous and there are lots of nice shops to check out. In the evening there are some really nice bars and cafes where you can sit outside for a drink.

8. You can try some traditional food in Shkodra

Albanian food is delicious and Shkodra has some of the best traditional dishes in Albania. You definitely won’t go hungry in this city as there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.

Try some Albanian gyros or byrek which is a type of pastry filled with spinach, cheese, or meat.

I found that there were plenty of vegan options too. Including grilled eggplants, stuffed peppers, and lots of freshly baked bread.

9. There are lots of things to see in Shkoder

There’s no need to wonder what to do in shkoder. There are plenty of things to do in Shkoder to keep you entertained for days. Here are some of the best Shkoder attractions

Lake Shkoder

Lake Shkoder is a beautiful lake located on the outskirts of Shkoder. The lake has an area of almost 320 square kilometres and is the largest lake in Albania. It is fed by the Drin River and three other tributaries and is a popular destination for anglers, campers, and birdwatchers. I spent a day at the lake for my friend’s birthday and we had an amazing time. There are a few small rocky beaches with beach bars which are perfect for relaxing. It’s also really fun to go paddle boarding on the lake .

Be sure to look out for the abandoned bunkers scattered along the shore too!

Rozafa Castle

Rozafa Castle was my favourite thing in Shkoder! The castle sits high above the town and has the most incredible views. Rozafa Castle dates back to the 13th century and has a pretty grim legend behind its origin . There isn’t really any information or tourist infrastructure at the castle but it’s still a great place to explore.

The hike up to the castle is pretty steep and there is no shade so avoid going up there in the mid-day sun.

Marubi National Museum of Photography

The Marubi National Museum of Photography is a must-visit in Shkodra. It’s a really nice little photography museum that showcases the work of three generations of photographers from the Marubi family. The museum also has various temporary exhibitions throughout the year related to Albanian culture.

Shkoder’s Venetian Mask Museum

The Venetian Mask Museum in Shkoder is a great place to learn about the history and culture of the traditional masks used for masquerades and festivals in Shkodra. The museum has an extensive collection of masks from various eras as well as other artefacts related to mask making. There are also some beautiful masks available for sale, which make great souvenirs.

Ebu Bekr Mosque 

The Ebu Bekr Mosque is a beautiful mosque in Shkoder. It was built in 1995 after the previous mosque was destroyed by the communist regime. It’s a beautiful building with an ornate interior and a very peaceful atmosphere. The mosque is open to visitors but it’s important to remember that it is still an active place of worship so make sure to be respectful and dress appropriately.

Site of Witness and Memory Museum

The Site of Witness and Memory Museum is a fascinating museum in Shkoder. It highlights the local history of Albania during the communist dictatorship, which began in 1945 and lasted until the 1990s. The museum has been described as an outdoor living history lesson and it’s definitely worth visiting if you have an interest in Albanian culture and communist history.

Mesi Bridge

The Mesi Bridge is a stunning Ottoman bridge in the village of Mes, which is about 5km (3 miles) from Shkoder. It was built by the Ottomans in the 18th century and it spans the river Kir. The bridge is incredibly beautiful and it’s a great place to stop for photos or just to admire its unique architecture.

10. Shkoder is a great place for shopping & souvenirs

Shkoder is full of charming little shops and local markets. From handmade carpets to traditional clothing and jewellery, there is a lot of great shopping in Shkoder.

11. You can take lots of excellent day trips from Shkoder

There are lots of great day trip opportunities from Shkoder. It’s the perfect place to use as a base to explore the surrounding areas. Here are a few of my favourite places that are all within easy reach of Shkoder.

Ulcinj is one of my favourite places in all of the Balkans. it’s an easy 1.5hr drive from Shkoder and the border crossing is very straightforward.

The Shala River is beautiful, and there are some great hikes along it. You can also go kayaking or rafting on the river.

12. There are great accommodation options in Shkoder 

Shkoder is an excellent city for budget travellers and there are some really great accommodation options. From cosy, family-run guest houses to modern hotels and hostels, you’ll be able to find something that suits your needs.

The Best Hotels in Shkoder, Albania

Hotel legjenda.

In my opinion, Hotel Legjenda is the best place to stay in Shkoder. I didn’t stay here but a friend of mine did so I spent some time here. If I go back to Shkoder this is definitely where I will stay. The pool is lovely and there is such a nice relaxed atmosphere here. It’s a great place to stay for all budgets as it has a range of accommodation options from dorm rooms to deluxe chalets.

Hotel Tradita

Hotel Tradita is a traditionally decorated boutique hotel and guest house in Shkoder. It offers great value for money and the food in their restaurant is really delicious!

Shkodra Backpackers Hostel

This is the hostel that I stayed in. I loved the garden area and the free bikes. It’s a great place for solo travellers as there is a very social atmosphere here which makes it easy to find friends. It’s also great for animal lovers as the hostel is home to several dogs, cats and tortoises!

Where to eat in Shkoder

Shkoder has lots of great options for food. I really enjoyed trying lots of Albanian dishes in Shkodra and I had no trouble finding lots of yummy vegan options. Here are a few of the best restaurants in Shkoder:

This is one of the most popular restaurants in Shkoder and they have a great selection of traditional Albanian dishes. My friends and I loved this restaurant and ate there several times. The portions here are massive so be prepared to share! There are lots of great veggie and vegan options available here too.

Tradita Geg & Tosk

This cute little restaurant has a really cosy atmosphere and the food is really tasty. The owners and their family are so friendly and accommodating.

Arti’Zanave

This restaurant has become very popular in Shkoder recently and it’s not hard to see why! They have some amazing dishes that are full of flavour and they also have vegan and vegetarian options available.

How to get to Shkoder 

Tirana airport is the only airport in Albania so if you are flying in this is where you will land.

You have several options for how to get from Tirana to Shkoder .

The easiest way to get to Shkoder is by bus. There are direct buses from Tirana , the capital of Albania, which take approximately 2 hours. You can also rent a car in Albania or try hitchhiking. Hitchhiking in Albania is a great adventure!

Rent a car in Shkoder

If you want to explore the region more and you are comfortable driving, then I recommend renting a car in Shkoder . This will give you the freedom to explore roads less traveled and get off the beaten path. This will also make it easier to take a day trip to nearby Montenegro .

Shkoder is known for its stunning natural beauty, cultural attractions, and friendly locals. It’s a perfect place to experience Albania’s traditional charm while having easy access to some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes.

Is Shkoder safe?

Yes, Shkoder is a safe destination. As with any city, it is important to take safety precautions and be aware of your surroundings but, generally speaking, Shkoder is a very safe place to visit.

I felt completely at ease while there, even while walking around after dark. Albanians are very welcoming and hospitable and will rush to help you if you get lost or need something.

Travel Tips for visiting Shkoder Albania

Make sure to have the right currency! – The Albanian Lek is the local currency, so make sure you exchange some at a currency exchange before your trip.

Learn some basic phrases – It’s always nice when visiting a foreign country to be able to speak a few words of the language and it will help you when interacting with locals.

Dress appropriately when visiting the mosque – It is important to dress modestly and respectfully, so be sure not to wear anything that is too revealing or provocative.

Bargain in the markets – This is a common practice in Albania and bargaining can help reduce prices. 

Don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path – The best way to really explore a destination is often by getting off the main tourist route and exploring what Albania has to offer beyond its main attractions.

Shkoder is well placed for a stop as part of a longer trip around the Balkans . Here are some of the places you can visit from Shkoder:

Tirana – The capital city of Albania is about an hour and a half away by bus.

Montenegro – Take a day trip to the nearby country of Montenegro for stunning landscapes and historic sites. I recommend visiting Lake Skadar, Budva and Ulcinj.

Durres – If you have time, this is the largest port city on the Adriatic Sea and a great place to spend a few days. From here you can catch a ferry to Italy

Greece – Head down to Saranda, where you can catch a ferry to the Greek island of Corfu. 

North Macedonia – Head to North Macedonia after Albania to continue your Balkans adventure. There are some great sites in Macedonia such as Lake Ohrid and the quirky capital Skopje.

To spend a perfect day in Shkoder I recommend renting a bike and cycling to Lake Shkoder where you can go paddle boarding and kayaking , or simply relax on the shore. In the afternoon explore Rozafa castle and take in the stunning views before heading back to the city centre for the evening for a drink at one of the many bars that line the Pedonale.

Things to Do in Shkoder Albania: Complete Travel Guide

Nestled on the Mbishkodra Plain between the marshes surrounding Lake Shkoder and the foothills of the Albanian Alps is the northern city of Shkodër. This laid-back, historic city lies roughly 103 kilometers north of the Albanian capital, Tirana.

It is sometimes referred to as Shkodra and was also known as Scodra and Scutari in its history. It serves as the gateway to the magnificent Albanian Alps and the expansive L ake S hkoder , but the things to do while visiting Shkoder Albania are all its own.

The lands around Shkodër have been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age due to the Shkoder Lake and the fertile plain that the city was built upon. The city itself dates back to early antiquity, making it one of the most ancient cities in the Balkans.

During its early history, Shkodër was home to the Ardiaei and the Labeates, two Illyrian tribes that ruled territories that included Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Later in its history, the Romans, Serbs, Byzantines, and Ottomans also ruled the region.

Most of the city’s most prominent attractions take advantage of its long history and appealing geography. The city is also known as the cultural capital of northern Albania and is known for its rural, northern music.

It’s also a fantastic place to experience northern Albanian cuisine, which I found to be heartier, richer, and meatier than the fare I found in the cities further south.

During my time in the city, Andy from Travel Albanian Alps took me around to experience the real Shkodër and all it has to offer. These are the things to do in Shkoder Albania.

Visit Mesi Bridge

Also known as Mes Bridge, Mesi Bridge is a relic from the Ottoman period and a Postribë cultural monument. The 18 th -century bridge was built around the year 1770 by a local Ottoman pasha named Kara Mahmud Bushati.

It spans the Kir River, which runs through the Albanian Alps and flows into the Drin River just south of Shkoder Albania. It also carries the distinction of being the oldest Ottoman bridge in Albania!

At 108 meters long, Mesi Bridge is one of the longest Ottoman bridges in the region. The bridge is made up of round stones and stone plates and provides picturesque views from atop it, as well as from below when the Kir is dry.

Mesi Bridge is 12.5 meters high and consists of 13 arches, including the largest, which is in the very center. Although tourists can cross the bridge due to a 13-million-leke investment by the Albanian Development Fund, it is quite narrow at just 3.4 meters wide.

When I visited Mesi Bridge, the Kir River was completely dry, so I was able to explore the area below the bridge. It’s one of the most beautiful Ottoman bridges I’ve had the pleasure of visiting.

It strongly reminded me of another of my favorites, the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Visegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s a gorgeous example of Ottoman architecture and is a great site to visit if you want to get a feel for Shkodër’s history.

Eat at Hotel Restorant Tradita Gegë & Toskë

When you want to get a taste of northern Albanian flavors, I suggest a visit to Hotel Restorant Tradita Gegë & Toskë. As its name suggests, this is a hotel and restaurant that serves traditional northern Albanian food.

They also offer cultural activities and entertainment, including traditional musical performances and other events designed to share northern Albanian traditions with their guests.

Before you dine, I suggest touring the property, which is a unique mix of restaurant, hotel, museum, music venue, and retail. Be sure to check out the mannequins donning traditional Albanian clothing.

Don’t miss the souvenir shop, where you can buy some local clothing, as well as pillows, musical instruments, and traditional hats called qeleshes. There’s also a huge terrace outside, as well as a bar on the second level.

From the bar, you’ll have a great view of the stage, where the restaurant hosts live musical performances.

But the best part of the Hotel Restorant Tradita Gegë & Toskë experience is the food! I highly recommend the gamy wild pork sausage, fresh goat cheese, the beef-and-mushroom tava, fresh pork, and the roasted eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes.

There was also a unique goat cheese and herbs that came sizzling in a tava. Enjoy it all with some kulaç, which is a type of flatbread that’s similar to naan.

The fresh pork was fatty and smoky, and the sausage was heavenly. I noticed that pork was a bit of a rarity in Tirana, but seemed to be much more common in the mountains. Pair the feta-like fresh goat cheese with the tomatoes, which are bursting with delicious juice.

But the highlight of the meal was the beef tava with wild mushroom sauce, which was hearty, tender, and earthy and my favorite tava dish in Albania up to that point! Having it is one of the things you must do in Shkoder Albania!

Take a Walk Down Rruga Kole Idromeno

One of my favorite things to do when I travel, especially when I’m in Europe, is to visit the local pedestrian street. They’re usually located in the heart of the cities.

And while they’re usually packed with tourists, they’re also safe places to get a small taste of everything you look for when you travel: culture, food, and local life. In Shkoder Albania, the local pedestrian street is Rruga Kole Idromeno.

Andy from Travel Albanian Alps showed me around the street, which is located in the old center of the city. The street itself is very colorful and vibrant and filled with locals, tourists, and families.

I noted a lot of Italian influences, particularly in the cafés lining the street. There are also lots of eateries and outdoor seating where you can enjoy lunch during the day or a drink at night.

I suggest having a rakija outside if the weather permits, which will allow you to people watch and get a better feel for Shkodër. There are also souvenir shops where you can buy clothing and mugs, as well as lanterns and woodwork!

As you press on to the end of the street, you’ll come across a Catholic Church on your left and the Ebu Beckër Mosque on the right. The mix of cultures and variety along Rruga Kole Idromeno is the city in a nutshell and one of my favorite things to do in Shkoder Albania!

Dine On the Shores of Shkoder Lake at Sunset Restaurant

When you’re compiling a list of the best things to do in Shkodër, Albania, a stop in the nearby village of Shiroka should be on it. This small village is located just a 10-minute drive from Shkodër and is located on the shores of Lake Shkoder.

It’s also just a few kilometers from the Adriatic Sea, which helps explain why the village is known for its delicious local seafood. One of the best restaurants to have some is Sunset Restaurant.

Sunset Restaurant is located in a row of restaurants along the lakeside. It’s the closest restaurant to the water. I suggest dining al fresco on their outdoor terrace, just feet from Lake Shkoder if you can.

But if you prefer, there’s also an elevated terrace on the restaurant’s second floor and an indoor dining hall with massive windows that look out at the lake. The views are absolutely breathtaking!

The chefs at Sunset Restaurant make a variety of Albanian dishes. For your starters, I recommend the Greek salad, which contains lettuce, olives, feta cheese, cucumbers, and tomatoes.

The cheese is incredibly fresh, and I loved the oily, tasty olives. I also recommend the bruschetta, which is soft but still has some crisp to it, and topped with fresh tomatoes, oil, and cheese. It’s like a fresh, farm-to-table pizza!

Fish Dishes

After your starters, I suggest having some fish, which is what Sunset Restaurant is known for. The fish come from both the lake and the Adriatic Sea.

I highly recommend the lake trout, which is buttery and tender and comes smothered in a rich tomato sauce. It’s cooked in a tava, so it arrives at the table nice and hot. Just beware—it contains lots of small bones!

But the most unique dish is the salt-baked fish from the Adriatic. It’s baked under a mountain of salt, which you have to chip away at before you can serve yourself. Despite the amount of salt it’s cooked in, the fish itself is not very salty.

The meat melts in your mouth and is incredibly fresh.

It contains fewer bones and spines than the lake trout, but I still advise being very careful while eating it. Pick through both dishes with your fork and fingers if you like, and use your teeth and tongue to feel around as you chew to make sure you don’t accidentally swallow any.

It’s a lot of work, but the fish is so tasty, it’s more than worth it. Trying these dishes is easily among the best things to do in Shkodër, Albania!

Explore Rozafa Castle

Easily the most well-known attraction in Shkodër is Rozafa Castle near city centre , a massive stronghold that stands guard over the city like an enormous sentry.

It stands atop a steep, rocky hill that you can choose to hike if you want. From what I’ve heard from others, the hike is strenuous, so if you’re pressed for time or not in great shape, I suggest driving up to the castle to explore it.

Rozafa Castle is one of Shkodër’s ancient relics. The crumbling but still impressive ruins date back to the days of ancient Illyria. The Romans captured the castle in 167 BC.

Later, the Venetians took the castle and built most of the walls that stand today. The use of the castle continued throughout the medieval period, as it was taken by the Ottomans in 1478. The castle was a popular target even in modern times, as Montenegro captured Rozafa Castle in 1912.

Visiting the Castle

As of August of 2020, it costs 300 lekës, or just under $3 USD to visit the castle. It’s more than worth the small entry fee, as the sprawling grounds are heaven for any history fanatic. Inside the castle itself, you can see the original stone floors, as well as arches set into the walls, which I guessed were stables for horses.

You can see many ancient-looking walls lining the main path. You’ll also find the 15 th -century Fatih Sultan Mehmet Mosque, which was built atop the remnants of the 13 th -century St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Don’t miss the two courtyards, both of which boast a number of ruins. The first you’ll come across contains Venetian ruins, including three towers, while the second is home to walls, a storage space, a prison, a cistern, and a church that later became a mosque. Other sites around the castle include a gift shop, a S hkoder historical museum , and a café.

And as someone who loves seeing the places I visit from above, Rozafa Castle did not disappoint one bit. Because of its position on a hill high above Shkodër, I could see for miles in every direction.

The views of the city, the river, the farmlands, distant mountains, and Lake Shkodër, are breathtaking. You can even see into Montenegro! It’s the best place in Shkodër to take photos and one of the best things to do in Shkodër, Albania.

Visit Agroturizem Shega

One of the many highlights of my time in Albania was the food. It’s a fantastic mix of hearty, heavy Balkan cuisine and lighter Mediterranean fare with lots of Italian influences.

When I travel, I like to know where my food came from, and there are few places in the world better at this than Albania. Meals in Albania are often farm-to-table, and one of the best places to see the practice in action is Agroturizem Shega in the nearby village of Muriqan.

The word “Shega” is Albanian for “pomegranate,” so it should come as no surprise that the farm is famous for its pomegranates and pomegranate juice.

And while I visited about a month before the pomegranates would be ripe, they still had some fresh juice for me, which was refreshing and fruity, with no added sugars or preservatives.

Tour the Farm

The owner, Ahmet Sylejmani, then showed me around the farm. We joked around in Italian and shared some laughs as I tried some figs from his trees.

He was so eager for me to try them that he fed me more while my mouth was still full! I also tried some juicy but slightly tart red grapes, as well as some sour white grapes. After they’re harvested, the grapes are then bought by wine producers.

As I continued my tour, I saw some lemons, tangerines, and limes growing on trees outside, as well as tomatoes growing in their tented greenhouse. The greenhouse is huge and contains twenty rows of hundreds of plants that range from tomatoes to eggplant to peppers.

While some of the tomatoes were still small and green, others were overripe and already starting to go bad. Those tomatoes are fed to the farm animals so nothing goes to waste! The animals on the farm include some trusty hens, who lay 2-3 eggs each per day, and some native Hermann’s tortoises!

Enjoy a Meal

Agroturizem Shega is run by Ahmet and his family, so when you visit or stay there overnight, you’ll be treated to authentic, home-cooked Albanian cuisine.

On the night I stayed, Ahmet’s wife prepared a phenomenal chicken that had been boiled in a flavor-rich broth. It infused lots of herbal flavor into the chicken, which still tasted incredibly fresh, as it had come straight from the chicken coops outside.

I enjoyed the chicken with some pickles, a refreshing tomato-and-onion salad with oil, olives, fresh goat cheese, freshly baked bread, and potatoes. I had helped picked tomatoes in the salad myself! Beverage-wise, I enjoyed a nice Torre shesh i zi wine, which is made from indigenous grapes with a fruity but unique flavor.

I ended my night with a few slices of tespixhe, a cake that is famous in Muriqan. It’s a dense, thick cake that’s soaked in a sugar syrup. Despite that, it’s not overly sweet at all!

Stay the Night

Of course, if you have the time, I highly recommend staying at Agroturizem Shega overnight to get the full farm experience. The house has two rooms for guests, both of which contain two twin beds. The accommodations are modest and simple yet comfortable and homey. One of the rooms has a unique coat rack made from a de-barked tree. You can hang your things from the branches!

Parking is free for guests who drive to the farm, and all of the rooms have air conditioning and a private bathroom. Guests will also enjoy complimentary continental breakfasts every morning. It’s located roughly 54 miles from Mother Teresa Airport in Tirana, but is also easily accessed via Shkodër.

Try Byrek at Piceri Arlindi

One of the most common foods you’ll find in Albania is the savory pastry called byrek. Also known as burek or börek depending on which country you’re in, it’s a staple in the Balkan nations of southeastern Europe.

I’ve eaten many different varieties in Albania alone, and probably dozens more during my travels through the Balkans. When you’re in Shkodër and have a hankering for some byrek, I suggest a pit stop at Piceri Arlindi.

Piceri Arlindi is a small bakery in town, and the byrek they serve is fantastic. Byrek is particularly convenient because it’s portable. It’s basically a stuffed, handheld pie with a crispy and flaky crust. That makes it the perfect dish to take with you when you’re on the go.

On the morning of my fifth day in Albania, I stopped there on my way to Theth National Park and ate my byrek in the car on the way. It was hot, full of fresh, melted cheese, and had a golden-brown crust that gave it a nice, buttery flavor. I recommend having it with some plum rakija and a strong espresso!

I liked Theth Park as much as I liked Valbona Valley National Park . The trail concludes in Valbona Valley, another picturesque destination with a river running through it. Valbona is surrounded by high peaks and is part of the Valbona Valley National Park.

Stay at Kevin Homes Guesthouse

If you need a comfortable place to stay in Shkodër, check out Kevin Homes Guesthouse. This cozy guesthouse is located just minutes from the heart of Shkodër, so getting to all the local attractions from there is quick and easy. The guesthouse is run by Andy from Travel Albanian Alps, a tour company that specializes in tours of northern Albania.

The guesthouse is a typical Albanian house. On the first floor, you’ll find a map of Albania on the wall, as well as brochures advertising the tours they offer.

Four rustic, wooden, and comfortable guest rooms are on the second floor. One of the rooms has a queen-sized bed that is perfect for couples.

The other three rooms contain three twin beds each. There’s also a spacious backyard, where you’ll find a separate building that serves as a bar and kitchen. You can camp in a tent in their garden, under their fruit trees, for only €5 per night.

If you’d prefer sleeping inside, one of the twin beds will cost you €12/$14.18 USD per night, while the room with the queen-sized bed will cost double that at €24/ per night. Breakfast is included, regardless of where you sleep, and your first drink there is complimentary.

While you’re there, you’ll be treated to some fantastic, home-cooked Albanian cuisine prepared by Andy’s wife. She makes a phenomenal pork cevap, Albanian fried rice, fresh yogurt, and fried cheese for dinner. And for breakfast, you can enjoy fresh eggs from Andy’s milkman, as well as homemade cheese, jam, bread, butter, and apricot juice. You’ll also enjoy tomatoes and cucumbers straight from their garden!

Take a Road Trip to Theth National Park

Of course, because Shkodër is the gateway to the Albanian Alps, you should definitely set aside at least a few day trip to explore Theth National Park. This expansive park in northern Albania is the largest national park in the country. It’s also home to some of the most spectacular views I’ve ever seen while traveling!

The town of Theth is roughly a three-hour drive from Shkodër. The road leading away from Shkodër is paved only part of the way, and becomes a dirt road before you reach the mountains. From there, the road only gets rockier and more treacherous, so I highly advise taking it slow.

You’ll need to drive a 4×4 to manage the road well. Be extra careful if you’re traveling in the winter. Snow and ice can sometimes completely cover especially tricky parts of the road, making them impassable. For that reason, I advise traveling to Albania in the summer to mitigate any safety issues.

The summertime temperatures in Albania can be brutal, even in the mountains. But thankfully, there is a little natural fountain along the side of the road with ice-cold mountain water flowing from it. Get a drink from it or splash some on your head to cool off like I did! Driving up to Theth National Park is easily one of the top things to do while in Shkodër, but be safe while doing it!

While I’ve heard some travelers say there isn’t much to do while you visit Shkoder besides pass through on your way to the mountains, I disagree. The city is brimming with Albanian culture and history and is one of the best places in the country to immerse yourself in everyday Albanian life.

Shkodër is charming and decidedly laid-back, which is exactly what I loved about it. It’s a place you should definitely spend a couple of days exploring before you head north into the Albanian Alps. You’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t. Book a day trip to Albania today to experience everything Shkodër has to offer for yourself!

Shkodër or Shkodra is one of the oldest cities in Europe nestled in the northwest part of the country and usually the jump off point to travelers to hiking in the Albanian Alps.   Known for its fascinating history and natural landscapes, there are plenty of things to do in Shkoder that spending a day or two in the city will only enhance your travels in Albania.

Best Things to do in Shkoder, Albania

Rozafa Castle one of the most popular places to visit in Shkoder.  The medieval fortress is located about 10 minutes outside the city if you’re driving.  The castle offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including the nearby Lake Shkodra and the Albanian Alps.

Legend has it that the castle was built by three brothers, who worked during the day but found their work destroyed by night.  A wise old man told them that in order for the castle to stand, they needed to sacrifice one of their wives.  The brothers agreed and choose to sacrifice Rozafa, the wife of the youngest brother.  Rozafa willingly sacrificed herself and was turned into stone, becoming the foundation of the castle.

Today, you can explore the castle’s ruins, which include towers, walls and underground tunnels.  The castle also houses a museum that showcases artifacts and exhibits detailing the history of the fortress and surrounding area.  It costs 400 Lek to enter the castle.

Stroll Down Sheshi or Kole Idromeno Street

You can’t miss Sheshi or Kole Idromeno Street when you are exploring Shkodër.  This charming pedestrian-friendly street is lined with lively cafes, boutique shops and charming buildings that showcase the architectural beauty of the city.

As you wander along, you can admire elegant buildings with colorful facades and intricate details that date back to the Ottoman and Venetian eras.  You can also explore the wonderful blend of modern and traditional Albanian cuisine at various restaurants and cafes along the street.

In addition to its culinary offerings, Kole Idromeno Street is a great place for shopping.  Various boutique shops offer unique local handcrafts.  You can find everything from handmade jewelry to locally made souvenirs that make for perfects gifts or mementos from your visit to Shkoder.

Many hotels in Shkoder are located on this street and it’s about a 8 minute walk from the “bus station”.  I put bus station in quotes because technically there isn’t a bus station in town but an area that buses pick up and drop people off at.  I’ll go more into detail about that at the end of the post.

🍜 Travel Tip: Eat at Sofra Restaurant, which serves tasty Albanian cuisine and cheap, local wine.

The Ebu Bekr Mosque is one of the most beautiful Shkoder attractions.  The very photogenic mosque dominates Shkoder’s city centre.  Located on Kole Idromeno Street, you can’t miss checking out the beautiful architecture.  The inside isn’t as stunning as the outside but you can enter after hours when prayer is not being held.

Explore the Town on Two Wheels

Another great thing to do in Shkoder is to explore the town on two wheels, it is nicknamed the ‘City of Bicycles and Rain’ after all.  Shkoder is easy to explore on a bike because it’s as flat as a pancake.

As you pedal through the streets of Shkodër, the flat terrain and well-maintained cycling paths, makes this activity quite peaceful.  You can also cycle along the Buna River as well as explore the scenic parks and squares that dot the outskirts of the city.

If you have an extra day in Shkoder to spare, check out the Venice Art Mask Factory.  The show room is filled with beautiful hand-made masks which you would find in the Venetian market.  Masks are priced anywhere from 20 € to 2000 €.

Mesi Bridge

Located about 5 kilometers northeast of Shkoder is the Mesi Bridge.  Dating back to the late 18th century. this Ottoman style bridge is worth a visit if you have a car and some time.  I didn’t personal visit this bridge as it was similar to the infamous bridge in Mostar which I had the pleasure to experience.

If it’s raining, one of the best things to do in Shkoder is visit the Marubi National Photography Museum.  This is a one-of-a-kind Albanian photographic museum which features works of the Marubi Dynasty – Albania’s first family of photographers.

The museum includes the first photo ever taken in Albania which is wild to think about.  If you love history and want to gain a fascinating glimpse into early Albania and the rise and fall of communism, don’t miss out on this museum in Shkoder.

Shkoder Day Trips

I couldn’t make a best things to do in Shkoder post without including some epic day trips.  With that being said, if you have ample time to explore Albania, I recommend that you don’t visit the activities I listed below on day trips but as overnight and onward stays.

Joe and I spent 6 days trekking through the Accursed Mountains in Albania and it was the highlight of our month long travels through Albania.  We also spent 3 weeks exploring Montenegro and let’s just say that tiny country really packs in the sights and activities.

Boat Trip on Lake Koman

Nestled in the Albanian Alps, this hidden gem will mesmerize you with its pristine beauty.  Lake Koman is about 2 and a half hours away from Shkoder and an awesome day trip.  It’s an even better day trip from Shkoder if you are en route to Valbona National Park.

The scenic lake is actually a reservoir formed by a hydroelectric plant and stretches for approximately 30 kilometers, surrounded by towering mountains and lush greenery.  The waters of Lake Koman are a sight to behold, reflecting the natural splendor of the surrounding landscapes.

There are a few different ways you can enjoy Lake Koman – on a tour or you can book a roundtrip ferry ticket.  I experienced the Lake Komani Ferry en route to Valbona Valley National Park.  The car ferry that I took was extremely crowded.  I had to climb in between 2 cars just to key space on the railing.

I’ll say this, if you’re on a budget book a roundtrip ferry, if you want to have more of an experience, book a tour.  The untouched wilderness make Lake Koman an ideal destination for nature lover and adventure seekers, who are rewarded with epic views and a fun day on the water.

Shkoder is the gateway town to hiking the Accursed Mountains aka the Albanian Alps.  I spent 6 days hiking through the Albanian Alps, exploring Valbona National Park, Theth National Park and completing the Valbona Theth Trek.  ← It was a highlight of my time spent in Albania.

From Shkoder, Montenegro is an easy day trip, especially if you have your own vehicle.  Ulcinj, Montenegro is about an hours drive from Shkoder.  Ulcinj is a unique destination as a majority of the population is Albanian.  Ulcinj is known for its sandy beaches, so prepare for crowds during the peak summer months of July and August.

Tours To Shkoder

If you are short on time or just prefer to go on guided tour of Shkoder, you can book a tour from Tirana.  All tours listed below are reasonably priced, have good reviews and the guides speak English.

How to Get to Shkodër

Shkoder is easily accessed from Tirana.  The most convenient and commonly used method is by bus.  Buses operate regularly from Tirana’s central bus station.  It takes about two hours to get to Shkoder from Tirana.  Tickets cost 400 Lek.

There technically isn’t a bus station in Shkoder.  Most bus services leave from around Sheshi Demokracia in the center of town which is about a 10 minute walk from the Kole Idromeno pedestrian street.

Getting there will be easy as buses will just drop you off, when you’re leaving head to the same area and look for the destination in the bus windows.  The reception at your hotel will also be able to point you in the right direction.

Best Time to Visit Shkoder

The best time to visit Shkoder is during dry/hiking season which runs May to October.  July and August are the peak months, which mean higher crowds and hotter days.

Shoulder season May – June or September – October are the best months to visit Shkoder.   During these months, you can still enjoy pleasant whether and avoid the crowds.

10 Things to do in Shkoder + 6 Day Shkoder/Alps Itinerary

Shkoder is known as Albania’s ancient city and it’s the culture capital of the country. The city has a lively atmosphere and the CUTEST city centre I’ve seen in all of Albania . I think Shkoder is a super underrated city in Albania, so in this post I’m gonna tell you all about the wonderful things this place has to offer and convince you to visit!

Aside from Shkoder’s vibe and bright culture, the main reason people visit the city is because Shkoder is the access point to the Albanian Alps . Shkoder acts as a base for exploring Albania’s Accursed mountains because the public transportation is all routed through here. If you want to visit Theth or Valbona National Park, you’ll have to visit Shkoder first!

In this post I’ll outline all the things to do in Shkoder, as well as provide a 6 day Shkoder/Alps itinerary.

Currency : Albanian LEK (aka ALL). This is a closed currency so you’ll need to wait until you’re in Albania to exchange $.

Transportation : to enter the country you can find 1 international airport in Tirana, 1 port in Saranda (daily ferry arrivals/departures to Corfu, Greece), and a bus line from Montenegro. Buses are very cheap here, but unreliable. Driving is chaotic, I’d recommend sticking to buses. There are no trains within the country.

Phone : purchase a local SIM card from Vodafone – the plans are cheap and they include lots of data, however international minutes are typically not available.

Language : Albanian, however you can get by with English. Google translate is recommended for smaller cities/villages.

Helpful Info : don’t drink the tap water or bring a purifying bottle like this one . Bring an international travel adapter , and notify your bank before travelling.

Shkoder is located in the northern region of Albania – close to the Montenegro border, actually. All buses that lead to Shkoder from Albania are routed through Tirana . So, even if you’re coming from another major city, you’ll have to stop at Tirana’s bus station and catch a connecting bus to Shkoder. The bus from Tirana should take approximately 2.5-3 hours and it costs around 400LEK/4 euros.

^there are no public trains in Albania, so unless you’re travelling via car you can expect to use the bus system.

BUT a word of warning about Albania’s bus system – it’s very flaky and unreliable. You won’t find timetables or transit routes online, so your best bet at finding accurate information about the bus schedule to Shkoder is to ask the employees of your hotel or hostel. They’ll know best!

For reference, this is the “ bus station ” in Shkoder – buuuut it’s more like buses lined up on the side of the road with signs in the window for where they’re going. If you want to go to Tirana from Shkoder the bus is located around the corner. Ask the locals or the bus drivers where the Tirana stop is and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Where to Stay in Shkoder

Lucky for you (and me) Albania is kind of a backpacker’s paradise. The country isn’t part of the Schengen Zone or the EU which means it hasn’t been subjected to any crazy inflation. If you’re open to staying in hostels you can easily find accommodations in Albania for 10 euros/night. And even if you’re wanting something more private, like a hotel, you’ll most likely still be able to find something for around 15-20 euros/night.

There are plenty of options for where to stay in Shkoder – all of which you can see here – however I’ve broken down the best options by category to make things a little easier for you.

Backpacker Budget

• You can check prices and availability for Wanderer’s via Booking.com .
• You can check prices and availability for Shkodra Backpackers via Booking.com .

Luxury Budget

• Hotel Colosseo & Spa is rated 5 stars with over 300 glowing reviews on Booking.com. Hotel Colosseo offers a complimentary breakfast, a fitness studio as well as various heath and wellness facilities like saunas, an indoor pool, and massage free of charge. Here you’ll get air conditioning, free parking, and an on-site restaurant with a prime location in the city’s centre.
• Grand Hotel Europa is another 5 star hotel in Shkoder that offers free access to a fitness studio and a spa.

Mid-Range Budget

If you’re looking for something mid-range, you have plenty of options. If we’re factoring in price, location, and quality I’d recommend either Hotel Carmen or Shkodra Apartment .

1. Walk to Rozafa Castle for Sunset

Rozafa Castle, or Rozafa Fortress, is a pretty massive castle resting just outside the city centre. Here you can find castle ruins and a museum (for an extra fee).

The best time of day to visit the castle is in the evening for sunset. You’ll have a view overlooking the entire city as well as the surrounding mountains. Considering the castle is in a city, I must say the view is quite impressive from here!

There are also events that are hosted fairly frequently at the castle. If you’re lucky, there might be some sort of concert or festival happening when you visit!

2. Bike to Shiroka

#2 on the list of things to do in Shkoder is bike to Shiroka; a cute and quiet little village along Skadar Lake. It’s located 14kms (roundtrip) from the city centre of Shkoder which makes Shiroka the perfect place for a day trip from the city.

You can rent bikes from (literally) anywhere in Shkoder. There’s a huge biking culture in this city and “rental” shops pop up everywhere. Oftentimes hotels and hostels offer cheap rentals as well as restaurants. I rented a bike from Eko Club (by the way this place offers cheap, delicious, healthy food and the yummiest fresh juice) for just a few euros/day. I wouldn’t have been able to bike the Tour de France with this bike, but from Shkoder to Shiroka it was perfect!

Once you arrive in Shiroka make sure you try the carp fresh from the lake – Shkoder’s signature local dish.

3. Rent Kayaks on Lake Skadar

Speaking of Lake Skadar, something you may want to do after biking here is rent kayaks.

There are a few small rental shops located along the shore of the lake where you can rent kayaks pretty cheap!

4. Stroll Down Rruga Kolë Idromeno

In the centre of the city you’ll find a large pedestrian area filled with shops, ice cream parlours, restaurants, souvenir shops – you name it!

This is primarily where all the life in Shkoder happens, where all the hostels are located, and where you’ll want to be for evening xhiro. You’ll find adorable cobblestone streets here, colourful buildings, and a massive patio culture.

Make sure you add a stroll down Rruga Kolë Idromeno to your list of things to do in Shkoder!

5. Engage in Xhiro

Okay so xhiro – that weird word I just mentioned – is the Albanian word for “walk.” And lemme tell ya, Albanians LOVE their xhiro.

In the evening hours when the sun sets, all of Albanian emerges and this place becomes SO social! Patios are packed, there’s live music, and everyone’s out & about with their friends and family.

Going for an evening walk or grabbing a late dinner at one of Shkoder’s patios is great way to engage with local culture.

ps. xhiro during the weekend is when it’s most lively! Shkoder on a Friday or Saturday night is really something else.

6. Visit the Albanian Alps

The Albanian Alps are a trademark attraction of Albania and since Shkoder acts as the base city for exploring them, travelling to the mountains is something you have to do in Shkoder .

The main 3 areas of the Albanian Alps are: Komani Lake, Theth National Park, and Valbona Valley National Park. There are incredible hiking trails, waterfalls, and unique water sources in the alps you won’t want to miss. So, grab your daypack, lace those hiking boots, and prepare to see some wicked views – because DAMN. The scenery here is really next level.

7. Stay a Night on the Shala River

The Shala River is definitely a hidden gem and yet it’s one of the most beautiful places in all of Albania.

The reason the Shala River makes this list of things to do in Shkoder is because – like the Alps – Shkoder acts as the base city for exploring it. The Shala River is only a quick minibus and boat ride away from the city of Shkoder and WOW is it worth visiting.

The Shala River is a branch of Komani Lake and both of these bodies of water are known as the “Thailand of Albania.” The reason for this being that the water is an incredible shade of green/blue and it’s lined by the most lush, green, uniquely shaped mountains. Boating through these waters will seriously make you feel like you’re boating in Thailand!

I stayed 2 nights on the Shala River and these 2 nights were two of my favourite nights I had during my entire 1.5 month visit in Albania. There’s something really, really special about this place!

8. Visit Ebu Bekr Mosque

The Ebu Bekr Mosque is one of the prettiest mosques in Albania! It’s located right next to the pedestrian area in the city, so it’s impossible to miss.

You can photograph the mosque from the outside or venture inside and learn about the muslim religion – the locals will be happy to teach you. Just make sure you don’t enter during an active prayer session.

9. Learn About Albanian History

Albania in general has rich history… and lots of it! When it comes to Albania’s past, there’s a lot of dark history to be unravelled and discovered. Tirana in particular has tons of museums and historic buildings, but Shkoder has quite a few as well.

You can start off with the Shkodra Historical Museum followed up by the museum up at Rozafa Castle. If you’re wanting more, you can also check out to Photography Museum (Marubi Photo Collection) or the Venice Art Mask Factory; a workshop and museum all wrapped up into one.

10. Visit the Mes Bridge

The Mes Bridge is a fantastic Ottoman-style bridge located approx. 17kms (roundtrip) from the city centre of Shkoder. If you’re looking for more outdoor adventures and ways to be active in the city, grab a bike and start cycling!

This bridge dates back to 1770 (woah old) and was previously on the trade route between Shkoder and Kosovo. It’s 100m in length. Now it’s lined by green vegetation and the hills of the Maranai Nature Park.

Where to Eat in Shkoder

I’m not a huge foodie so I won’t go too in-depth here, however these are some notable restaurants and cafes in Shkoder:

• Eko Club – veg options, great cheese platter, YUM fresh juice, local desserts, and cheap.
• Fisi Traditional Restaurant – traditional foods at a decent price. Large servings.
• Gelateria Bell Italia – fantastic ice cream – best pistachio ice cream I’ve ever had – and yummy desserts.
• Stolia Coffee House & Brunch – healthy options, great wifi (perfect for digital nomads), and bright/nicely decorated interior. Good vibes.

6 Day Shkoder/Alps Itinerary

With everything I mentioned above, I honestly think you need more than 6 days to explore Shkoder and the alps. I think 7-9 days would be ideal, BUT not everyone has the luxury of time! With that being said, here’s a PACKED 6 day itinerary which encompasses all the highlights of Shkoder and all the highlights of the alps.

In this post I’m going to (very) briefly go over the itinerary I recommend, however in this post you can find MUCH more information regarding hiking, transportation, and all the other important stuff you need to know about visiting the alps.

Tips for Visiting Shkoder

• Grab a bike and get cycling! This is the local’s form of transportation and it’s the best way to see the sights surrounding the city.
• Book your accommodations in advance. Popular hostels, like Wanderer’s , fill up quick.
• Try the local fish, carp.
• Try to visit during the weekend – this is when Shkoder’s xhiro culture will be most lively.

• Shkoder can get really (and I mean really) hot in the summer months. Make sure you’re drinking enough water! The locals say you can drink the tap water here, however I was still skeptical so I bought bottled.

Colour-washed streets, a thriving cafe scene and a deep affinity for bicycling.

Surprisingly laidback Shkoder strikes an entirely different cord than Tirana .

Wedged between the mysterious Accursed Mountains and the glittering expanse of Lake Skadar, many visitors use Shkoder (also called Shkodra) merely as a gateway for the Albanian Alps or as a convenient stopover on their way to Montenegro , but this oddly refreshing town is certainly worth a visit in its own right.

Located just a few kilometres from Shkoder, the tiny lakeside villages of Shiroka and Zogaj, and the road that meanders between them, acts as a beautifully nostalgic snapshot of rural Albanian life.

Deliciously plump figs swing overhead, barefooted children run carefree through the streets and well-travelled Lada’s collect dust in the shadows.

I imagine this is what much of the Balkans was like some 20 odd years ago.

The 12km stretch of road that hugs the lake leading out of Shkoder takes you within a stone’s throw of Montenegro’s border.

The first section to Shiroka has a dedicated cycle path that sees plenty of visitors out for a scenic stroll, and with a lively cluster of cafes is as far as many will go. But push on to find the prettiest stretch of the ride where soon enough you’ll be whizzing down the open road past ripening pomegranate bulbs, clumps of wildflowers, secluded beaches and mountain panoramas that rise dramatically from the water’s edge.

It takes around 1.5 hours to reach Zogaj with several photo stops along the way.

The village itself is tiny without much of note, but you’ll find  Restaurant Balani  right at the end of the road which has a beautiful balcony overlooking the lake and a small pebbled beach below – an excellent place for a refreshing drink, lunch break or afternoon swim.

Considering traffic is a little crazy in Shkoder, it’s rather surprising that cycling has risen to become a key part of the city’s identity. It’s a pastime enjoyed particularly by the town’s more senior folk at an almost comically slow pace.

Along the main road between downtown Shkoder and the bridge, you’ll find a dedicated cycle path – though many cars also use this as parking space – and it’s not unusual for bicycles to travel in both directions in this lane or even travel around a roundabout in the wrong direction simply to stick within the cycle path. Normally aggressive motorists are generally respectful of cyclists and will give way if you make eye contact and clearly show your intentions – they are used to locals cycling at a snail’s pace after all.

Many hostels and guesthouses in town rent out bicycles for around €5 per day.

Sandstone streets lined by pastel facades, big wooden shutters hanging lopsided in their frames, leathery-faced men peddling unhurriedly on their rickety bikes and sun-drenched cafes sprawling across pedestrianised boulevards.

After the frenetic streets and incessant noise of Tirana , stepping foot in Shkoder’s bizarrely laidback old town is something of a time warp.

It’s the kind of thing you’d expect in a trendy city in Western Europe rather than from a brutal former Soviet regime, but despite its past, Shkoder’s city centre retains a distinct charm about it.

Aside from the city’s many houses of worship – a mosque and two churches are unmissable markers in the city skyline – there aren’t any specific attractions in town, but between the old town streets, it’s easy to slip away and experience a very different side to the city.

Don’t just stick to the main boulevard though. Wander off into back streets and you’ll quickly find tumbledown homes draped in bougainvillaea and old ladies gossiping in doorways.

As the shadows grow long, the fading sun melts into a distant horizon and the countryside glows in vivid shades of warmth, there’s only one place you’ll want to be – on the crumbling walls of Rozafa Castle.

With a commanding presence overlooking the city, this historic fortress is a perfect place to take in the golden hues of Lake Skadar, the ominous peaks of the Albanian Alps and to seek a brief moment of solitude away from the unrelenting Albanian traffic.

Arrive around an hour or two before sunset to allow yourself enough time to explore the site and to find the best spot to watch the valley become awash with golden light.

Get There   |  Rozafa Castle sits around 3km from the city centre up a steep cobbled street and can be reached either by a somewhat unreliable bus from the city centre to the turn-off, or by taxi or bike.

Price  |  Entry costs 200 lek (€1.50) and guards are often kind enough to let you return multiple times on the same ticket.

START PLANNING:  THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN TIRANA!

For a relatively small town, Shkoder sure knows what’s up when it comes to food.

Aside from the traditional Albanian fare, you’ll find a number of excellent pizza joints, delicious pastry shops, fresh seafood and a dessert house that will have you drooling over every bite. These were some of my favourites.

Shega e Eger   |  After weeks of ordering soft drinks in lieu of any other non-alcoholic options, this small, funky cafe provided a much-needed shakeup. Smoothies, fresh juices and simple veggie snacks make this an excellent stop in Shkoder to replenish those vitamins and escape the summer heat. It’s just off the main pedestrian street and juices start from just 200 lek (€1.50). Drinks are normally served with straws so be sure to ask for yours without.

Il Piacere    |  On my last morning in Shkoder I stopped by this lovely dessert house for a well-deserved post-hike treat. One bite of the delectably warm and gooey chocolate souffle and I was kicking myself for waiting until the very end of my visit. A short walk from the city centre, Il Pacere has a wide selection of desserts and sweet treats sure to satisfy even the fussiest sweet tooth.

Rozafa Seafood   |  Don’t be fooled by the kitschy exterior, Rozafa undoubtedly serves up the best seafood in town and is popular with tourists and locals alike. From their extensive menu, all seafood is prepared fresh to order and complemented with local wines.

Peja Grill  |  This popular, good value restaurant was recommended by my hostel and while it did seem to be a little hit and miss, they definitely do some things exceptionally well, namely their grill items which were always fresh and delicious.

My biggest regret from my time in Albania was leaving the mountains quite so soon.

Rising dramatically from the lake’s shoreline and visible from almost anywhere around Shkodra, if you’re a nature lover it’s virtually impossible to set foot here and not be tempted to venture out to the jagged ridgelines of the Albanian Alps .

If you’re short on time, even a one night visit is enough to help you get back to nature and recharge with plenty of day hike options available.

For those with more time set aside for adventure, the popular Theth to Valbona hike is an excellent choice, as is exploring the wilderness around Komani Lake. For the more intrepid, the 8-day Peaks of The Balkan route is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Shkodra Backpackers   |  While Shkodra’s hostel scene has been growing of late alongside the city’s popularity, Shkodra Backpackers (also known as Mi Casa Es Tu Casa) continues to remain a firm favourite. With plenty of outdoor areas, a delicious feast of a breakfast, bikes for rent, an excellent location and a wonderful group of staff, it’s really no surprise it’s one of the city’s best-rated hostels.

From Tirana   |  Buses leave at least every hour from Tirana’s North Bus Station and cost 300 lek (€2.50). To return, buses depart from the western side of Shkoder’s main roundabout near the mosque.

From Ulcinj   |  Buses depart Ulcinj just 3 times a day for Shkoder and cost €6, or if you’re travelling north, buses leave Shkoder for Ulcinj just twice a day.

Discover the 11 best things to do in Shkoder & North Albania. From tourist attractions to day trips in the Albanian Alps, explore the best of Northern Albania!

The best part of traveling is stumbling upon off-the-radar destinations.

And while Shkoder is no secret to the travel community, it is a secret to most tourists. And that makes it a perfect place to visit as you get all the sights and none of the crowds.

So, I’ve compiled 11 of the best places to check out on your next visit to Albania and the northern part of the country. From museums to the outdoors, I’ve got it all here for you.

1. Visit Rozafa Castle

Rozafa Castle is one of the first things you’ll see on many to-do lists, so we’ll get it out of the way.

This massive castle sits above Shkoder on a steep hill, overlooking it like a sentry. And a visit to the castle gives you a ton of history and an outstanding view of the city.

 The castle dates back to the 9th century when it was built by Illyrian tribes. Over the years, it has been occupied by various civilizations and empires, including the Romans, the Byzantines, and Ottoman Empire. The castle also plays a central role in the legend of Rozafa. According to the legend, Rozafa was built into the wall alive as a sacrifice to ensure the castle walls wouldn’t crumble.

As a result, she now shares the name of the castle.

Today, the castle has a less-dark experience. It’s been restored and turned into a museum where visitors can explore the castle and its surrounding structures.

While it only takes a small part of your day, it’s a great way to start your trip to Shkoder!

2. Wander through the Shkoder Historical Museum

Then visit one of the few museums in Shkoder: the Shkodra Historical Museum! With a massive collection of artifacts and exhibits, there’s plenty to explore to discover Shkoder’s history.

When you visit the museum, you can start with its ancient past and the Illyrian tribes from the Ottoman Empire to today.

The museum is in a former Venetian merchant’s home, restored and converted into a museum. Several exhibits and artifacts to check out, and they’re broken down by different periods. Check out the Illyrian tribes and Ottoman Empire exhibits for more influential sections.

3. Sightsee at Ebu Beker Mosque

Whether you’re Muslim or not, the Ebu Bekr Mosque is an incredible place to visit.

It’s easy to find as it’s located right in the city’s heart. If you get lost, listen and follow the prayer calls.

Although this mosque is still relatively young (built in 1995), it was built on the former Fushe Cela Mosque site, which was destroyed during Albania’s communist era. And it’s hard not to be impressed by its construction.

A beautiful dome erupts into the sky, with twin minarets on each side and intricate geometric designs flowing across the walls and dome inside.

Here are a few tips for visiting:

• Dress modestly
• Give prayers space
• Remove your shoes when you enter the prayer hall
• Try to visit during non-prayer times

4. Rent a bike and ride the streets

The moment you enter Shkoder, you’ll notice the crowd of bikes weaving around the streets of this ancient city.

Shkoder is known for being great for bikes, and it’s a perfect way to explore the city.

Ride from landmark to landmark, visit the castle, or enjoy the different architecture as you coast. If you’re feeling adventurous, pedal out to the surrounding towns and get a dose of rural Albanian life.

And don’t worry about finding a bike to rent. There are shops on literally every corner.

So, sit back and enjoy the ride!

5. Hike in Theth National Park

Nature and outdoor lovers, rejoice!

Theth National Park is a small piece of natural heaven you should visit in Albania immediately!

With stunning mountain landscapes, clear rivers and waterfalls, and the famed Blue Eye (check the following sections 😉), there’s plenty for you to do here. It’s the best place to hike in Albania, but you can also camp or pull out a chair and enjoy the scenery.

About a two-hour drive northeast of Shkoder, Theth sits in the Albanian Alps and covers around 25,000 hectares. It’s also home to the Accursed Mountains, the perfect place for a hike. A personal favorite of mine was the Theth to Valbona Peak hike, which gives you panoramic views out over the valley. Another option is the Theth to Blue Eye hike, where you can reward yourself with a dip in its extremely cool waters.

If you like to take things slow, you can explore Theth and its picturesque villages. Stone houses and chapels dot the valley, and each one gives you a perfect photo op. Keep an eye out for a crumbling church as well. The church ruins are one of the most photographed spots in Theth.

This was one of my favorite things I did on my entire trip to Albania, and it will be one of yours, too!

6. Wander the pedestrian street known as Sheshi

Sheshi is the perfect place to watch Albanians in their daily lives.

Families stroll past, music is played, and vendors sell souvenirs, clothes, and jewelry.

Plus, there are many cafes and restaurants where you can grab a seat and enjoy a mid-day espresso. I spent most of my time in this area, and it’s the best way to get a feel for Shkoder.

7. Visit the Blue Eye near Theth and Shkoder

If you’re visiting Theth, there’s no reason to skip seeing the Blue Eye.

This natural wonder is a deep and incredibly blue pool of water with a waterfall crashing into it. And it’s beautiful 😍.

You can get a ride to the waterhole if you’d like to simplify things. But the other option is to hike to it from Theth and enjoy a freezing dip at the end to cool off. Plus, vendors are nearby selling drinks if it’s a scorching day.

Either way, take some time to enjoy the scenery — whether you decide to get in the water or not.

8. Ride on a boat on Lake Shkoder

Shkodra Lake is one of the largest Shkoder attractions.

Located right on the shore of Shkoder City, this lake is a perfect opportunity to spend a day on the water.

Take a boat tour, swim, or get some sun on the lakeshore. You can book trips from Shkoder out on the water in town or head lakeside and wander the streets and restaurants.

A fun fact is that Shkoder Lake is one of the largest in the Balkans. So that makes it a popular destination for tourists and locals.

9. Take a ride on the Komani Lake Ferry

Riding on Lake Koman is easily one of the top things to do and see in Albania.

With beautiful landscapes rising on both sides and the emerald waters rippling out from the boat, you can see how genuinely awesome Earth is.

You’ll see cute villages along the way, maybe the occasional animal, but plenty of mountainscapes that line the water’s edge.

If you’re doing the Valbona to Theth hike, you can ride on this expansive lake in one of this planet’s most beautiful ferry rides.

10. Drive to Montenegro

By being in the north of Albania, you’re right on the border of Montenegro, so why not visit another country on your trip?

After all, Montenegro is a beautiful country, making it one of the best day trips around Shkoder. It has incredible beaches, national parks, and some excellent cities.

And with the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, only an hour’s drive away, you get the perfect opportunity to explore.

So, if you have the time, consider visiting Montenegro and enjoying the Montenegrin lifestyle and language.

11. Take photos of the Mes Bridge

The Mes Bridge is a classic example of Ottoman architecture.

And it’s the perfect place for a photographer looking to get some fantastic shots.

With stone plates stacked upon each other, it spans around 108 meters (350 feet) to connect the two sides of the river. And even though it’s been restored a few times, it still maintains its original charm from when it was built in the 18th century.

The Mes Bridge spans the Kir River, a beautiful and historic Ottoman bridge. It is located in the heart of the city and is one of the most photographed landmarks in Shkoder. The bridge is a great place to stroll and enjoy the river and city views.

While you will only spend a little time here, it’s worth a quick visit.

How to get to Shkoder

The easiest way to get to the city of Shkoder is from Tirana.

If you’re flying to Albania, you’re likely flying into the airport in Tirana, so you have a few options:

• Book a taxi

Getting to Shkoder by bus

The buses depart from the Regional Bus Station , located northwest of the city’s center. 

On average, it costs around 400 Lek, or about $4.

Visiting Shkoder by taxi

A taxi will be more expensive, but you benefit from privacy.

You can find a taxi in town or use an app like Speed Taxi or UPs Taxi.

On average, a taxi will cost around 5000 to 6000 Lek or around $60-$70.

Renting a car

If you want to see different parts of Albania, renting a car is your best option.

Rental agencies are scattered around the city. I had the best luck by searching for the top agencies and contacting them personally. Some would offer better rates than they showed online.

You can rent a small-sized car for as low as 2000 Lek/day, or around $20.

Since the Bronze Age, Shkoder has been a beacon of art culture and is well known for its intense history and religious diversity.

Currently, it’s an essential hub in the north of Albania, that acts as a key access point to the wild Albanian Alps.

If you’re planning your visit to Albania , you need to know the best things to do in Shkoder Albania.

Top Things To Do In Shkoder Albania

There are some really fun things to do in Shkoder that I’d like to share with you as someone who lives here in “Albania’s Ancient City”.

To organize all of my tips, I’ve included what to do in Shkoder city – 12 ideas for you in the city center.

Then I separated the best things to do in Shkoder that are on the outskirts of the city in the following section.

These are a bit further out so you may need to rent a bike or car, hire a taxi, or join a tour.

There are also plenty of cool things to do in Shkoder County that you shouldn’t miss – so the last section has ideas for day trips from Shkoder and some 2 and 3-day trips as well.

In case you don’t have a lot of time, here are some of my favorite things to do in Shkoder :

• Cycle to Shiroka or further along the lake to Zogaj
• Day trip to the Albanian Alps (Boge & Theth)
• Visiting Rozafa Castle at sunset
• Kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding on Lake Shkodra

What To Do In Shkoder City

In case you’re wondering what to do in Shkoder city center, here are some great options if you don’t want to deal with any transport.

As long as you’re staying in the city center, these should 12 things should all be walkable things to do in Shkoder.

1. Get Your Caffeine & Cash

First things first – coffee and cash. If you are like me, and most other people, you’ll need a caffeine fix in the morning right?

Like the rest of Albania, Shkoder has SO many cute cafes – the coffee culture here is strong. And no I don’t mean Starbucks, chain restaurants aren’t really a thing in Albania (at least not yet).

These cafes are locally run and you can hardly step anywhere without being within breathing distance of a cafe.

So if you want to fit in with the locals, go to whatever place is closest and ‘nje express’ or ‘dopio express’ for a single or double espresso.

‘Nje’ is pronounced ‘n-ye’ the ‘ye’ should sound like you are about to say ‘yes’ but without the s.

You can also say that for getting a Cappuccino or Macchiato since it’s the same word in Albanian – just try saying it with an Italian accent (yes it does actually help).

If you want a specific recommendation, some of my favorites are La Mola , Gojë Gaditëse , or Nur . 

Now for money – Albania has a dominating cash culture.

Buying snacks, coffee, bus tickets, museum tickets, getting bread at the bakery, etc, are all relatively small expenses that you won’t be able to use cards for.

It’s important to always have cash, preferably in smaller bills because people can’t always give change or they don’t want to for such small purchases.

Even places with cards can have problems. Like the machine is temporarily not working or the power is out (that’s more frequent in the winter though).

The places you can use card are large grocery stores (not the corner shops), fancier clothing stores, and electronic stores – so basically places that frequently have larger purchases.

For free ATM withdrawals, use Credins Bank. Look for the blue and yellow ATMs.

2. Do A Historical Walking Tour

As a history lover, walking tours are one of my favorite activities in a new destination. Even if you’re not so crazy about historical facts, it’s still a great way to get a feel for a city.

I’ve done a lot of free walking tours on my travels. I’ve seen lots of different kinds as well, but I’ve never seen a romantic one before.

There is a specific walking tour for couples in Shkoder. It’s called the “Love Stories of Shkodra” walking tour .

3. Visit the Marubi National Museum of Photography

Before visiting, I’d never been to a photography museum even though I like to consider myself an amateur photographer.

So this was a unique experience for me, and it gave me a lot more insight into how deep Albania’s history is, especially Shkoder.

The photos show social, cultural, and political life in Albania from 1850 to the present.

It’s one thing to learn about what happened, but images open up your mind to understand in a completely different way.

Even if you don’t usually consider yourself a museum person, since it’s visual, you might enjoy it.

It can be a somber experience since Albania’s past is filled with hardships, but it’s definitely an interesting thing to do in Shkoder while visiting.

Entrance to the Marubi National Museum of Photography is: 

• 700 lek for adults
• 600 lek for groups over 12
• 350 for orphans, seniors, and people with disabilities 
• 210 lek for students and pupils aged 12-18
• Free for children under 12, war veterans, former political prisoners, paraplegic and tetraplegic individuals

4. Check Out The Mosques & Churches

Shkoder’s long past has meant that different people groups have inhabited the area. This has greatly influenced religious diversity that you can still see displayed.

Shkoder is known for its religious tolerance as well as for being the beacon of Catholicism in Albania.

As you are walking around Shkoder, I’m sure you’ll notice various religious places of worship like the Franciscan Church, the Orthodox Church, the Cathedral of Saint Stephen, the Xhamia e Parrucës, and the Grand Mosque – Ebu Bekr Mosque on the pedonale.

5. Enjoy A Nice Brunch or Lunch

There’s a good food scene to explore whether you’re wanting to try modern or traditional dishes.

To be honest, eating at restaurants is one of the best things to do in Shkoder. There are a lot of great places to eat in Shkoder for lunch, here are some of my favorites.

Stolia Coffeehouse & Brunch serves modern and healthy brunch options and has an aesthetic interior and garden.

They serve great specialty coffees and fancy croissants so it’s a good breakfast stop. They also have air conditioning and strong wifi so it’s perfect for getting a bit of work done too.

My favorites are the Lotus latte, fresh antioxidant juice, and avocado toast.

Vila Bekteshi has a charming, traditional feel and is located near the pedonale. My favorite dish is the chicken soup and egg-lemon soup.

Many others places serve it but theirs is the best. If you pair it with a few other sides, it makes for a good, light lunch.

Cliche Bistro is both a cafe and bistro on the pedonale that has a modern Instagram feel. This is kind of the ‘cool’ place in Shkoder to go to.

They serve a good range of more modern dishes and have wifi if you want to work there.

PS – it’s the only place in Shkoder that I’ve found that has Asian style dishes (if you want that). I had the chicken noodle dish and it was good for a region that has 0 Asian influence – they even gave chopsticks.

Manifatura is a newer bar and restaurant in a nationally protected 100-year-old textile and carpet shop.

Three childhood friends renovated the historical building and opened Manifatura to pay homage to Shkoder’s historical legacy with the walls showcasing literary and cultural aspects of the city.

If you’re in the mood for some comfort food, their specialty is pizza and beer. After trying quite a few pizza places, this is my favorite in all of Shkoder city.

If you’re okay with having pork/meat, I’d suggest the ham feast pizza. You can see some photos from the renovations and menu on their website .

If you’re looking for something hearty and local, you should try Puri Restaurant . Their specialty is pilaf (cooked rice).

This is a common food for locals to get at lunchtime since it’s affordable and gives a large portion. I like their pilaf but I did venture away from the norm one time to try their soup.

I’m always on the hunt for good soup spots so I tried their broccoli soup and it was so thick, creamy, and flavorful. I would definitely recommend that too.

6. Visit Shkoder History Museum

The Shkoder History Museum was established in 1947 with donations from religious communities (the Jesuits and Franciscans) and some prominent families of Shkoder.

It was moved to its current residence in 1996, to the traditional Shkodran house of Osa Kuka.

While visiting you’ll get to take a step back in time to the Albanian Renaissance with the beautiful artwork that is displayed.

There are also ethnographic and archaeological displays. Entrance to the museum is 150 lek for adults.

7. Go Shopping At The Flea Markets

You can visit open-air shops in different parts of the city, though there are some areas like this market and this area that have more of a market vibe.

It’s common for people to do errands earlier in the day, so you will see more activities in the morning.

This is normal for other things too – people like to buy fresh byrek and bread in the morning so the earlier you go, the fresher/more options you might have.

8. Check Out The Small Parks

Though it’s not the most exciting thing in the world, there are some interesting historical monuments in green spaces around Shkoder city.

You can see some at Shatervani and Sheshi Isa Boletini. There’s also a green space on Hasan Riza Pasha road where older locals like to hang out at.

There are some nice shaded areas so people socialize there.

9. Have A Drink At A Rooftop Bar

Since Shkoder is surrounded by beautiful mountains and Lake Shkoder, it’s easy to find nice views.

One of my favorite things to do in Shkoder is watch the sunset while having a drink at one of the rooftop bars.

Some of the places that I like with a good view are the Meridian, the rooftop bar at Hotel Colosseo , and the 5th-floor rooftop bar at Hotel Chicago .

10. Enjoy Baklava

Albania has been influenced by other cultures for hundreds of years, which is why it can feel like a mix of European and Middle Eastern influences.

Due to the Ottoman occupation, baklava is now found all over Albania. It’s eaten on special occasions, like Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

It’s nice to take a break from seeing things in Shkoder to have some baklava.

Just a warning though, if you’ve had it in Middle Eastern countries (where it’s made the best in my opinion), you might be disappointed – but it is still good.

My favorite place in Shkoder is a little ways from the pedonale here , about 10 mins walking away.

11. Teatri Migjeni

Teatri Migjeni is a cultural center and performing arts establishment near the main roundabout in Shkoder.

This roundabout is listed on google maps as Sheshi Demokracia but locally known as Ish 5 herojt – Qendra e qytetit – this is also where the buses arrive in the city and leave from).

There are different types of musical and performance events that happen at the teatri or theatre in English.

If you’re wanting to find out what’s on, stop in and ask, or you could ask your accommodation host to call them.

12. Kinema Millennium

Outside of Tirana, you’ll be hard-pressed to find places to watch movies. Kinema Millennium is located in the city center, so if you’re wanting to catch a film, it is possible.

Where I grew up, the only thing to do was go to the movies so it’s not that exciting to me – but if you want to watch a movie in Albanian for a unique experience, it is possible. Tickets will have to be purchased in person.

Things To Do In Shkoder City (On The Outskirts)

Most of the popular things to do in Shkoder that are always recommended in guides are actually located on the city outskirts.

I wanted to put these in their own section because they aren’t walkable, so you’ll need to rent a bike or a car, or hire a taxi.

Even with the extra effort, they are definitely worth it – the views from Rozafa Castle are incredible.

13. Venetian Mask Museum

Having a Venetian mask museum and factory in Shkoder might seem random.

It does make sense when you learn more about the city’s history, specifically the period of Venetian occupation.

It’s an interesting Shkoder attraction, to say the least. The masks are crafted beautifully and make a unique gift to take home, though it might not be the easiest to transport safely.

14. Visit Rozafa Castle

Rozafa Castle is a fortress on the edge of Shkoder, Albania. It was originally built in the 6th century and then was fortified more in the 15th century by the Venetians.

For almost three centuries, it served as an important military base for them until they lost control of Albania in 1797.

During the communist period, Rozafa Castle was turned into a museum and prison. Today, it has been declared a National Monument of Culture and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

There’s also an interesting story of how Rozafa Castle came to be, but you should wait to learn about it when you’re there in person.

If you want to visit, I’d recommend doing this guided tour of Rozafa castle because it includes some landmarks nearby and transportation.

15. Visit Shiroka & Zogaj

When visiting Shkoder, you’ll notice that the city center isn’t anywhere near the shores of Shkodra Lake.

Shiroka is kind of a second city center in some ways. It’s a small village directly on the waterside that has lots of guesthouses, hotels, and seafood restaurants.

It’s undoubtedly the best place to get seafood in Shkoder. Because of the restaurant’s proximity to the water, the seafood – or maybe I should say ‘lake food’, is super fresh.

In the high season, Shiroka is the place to be because there’s a nice walkway along the water, a place for kids to play. People usually come to have a drink or dinner and enjoy a sunset.

If you’re looking for a fun, active thing to do in Shkoder, you should rent a bike, cycle to Shiroka (or even further to Zogaj if you would like), and enjoy a nice seafood lunch.

Make sure to stop at Arbri Bar on the way to Shiroka, they make the best macchiato in Shkoder (I’m obsessed).

Of course in the dead of summer, it might be too hot, so you can take a taxi, each way will be about 500 -700 lek.

16. Go Kayaking or Stand Up Paddle Boarding

If you’re wanting to see more of Lake Shkoder while getting up close and personal, there is no better way than being directly on the water.

From Shiroka, you can do either kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding on Lake Shkodra .

I used to be a nature kayak tour guide myself for two summers. I can say with all my heart, being on the water is the best way to take in the lake’s natural beauty.

17. Visit Mesi Bridge

Mesi Bridge is a unique and picturesque landmark leftover from the Ottomans in 18th century.

You can find Ottoman bridges in different parts of Albania, but this is one of the longest in the region of northern Albania.

If you want to save time, it could be easier to take this combination tour of Mesi Bridge, Disht Castle ruins, and Rozafa Castle . It takes about 4 hours and would be good if the weather is really hot.

Walking up the steep hill to the castle is not ideal in the Balkan summer heat. Plus you don’t have to mess with arranging a taxi.

Day Trips From Shkoder

Shkoder is a great place to base yourself if you want to explore the north of Albania but don’t want to go completely into the rural areas for long periods.

That way you can enjoy the cozy vibes and amenities that the city offers while still seeing the stunning nature in the region.

18. Day Trip To Theth

One of the most famous villages in northern Albanian, Theth is a village high up in the Accursed Mountains, otherwise known as the Albanian Alps.

On my first trip to Albania, I solo hiked in these mountains for a week. It was gorgeous but also pretty intense.

If you’re not looking to be physically challenged, taking a day trip to Theth is a good option.

This allows you to see the beauty, learn about the interesting history there, see a cool waterfall, and an optional hike to the Blue Eye.

A different day trip to Theth offers to stop near Bogë to see a beautiful panoramic point and an ancient guard station as well.

19. Day Trip To Montenegro

Shkoder city is close to two border crossings into Montenegro, roughly a 30-minute drive to each. This means it’s very easy to visit Montenegro on a day trip from Shkoder.

One that goes close to Podgorica, the capital city of Montenegro, and one that goes towards the Montenegrin coast.

You can do this day trip to Montenegro that goes along the beautiful coast, but be aware the departure point is in Tirana.

Contact the company to see if they can pick you up in Shkoder if that’s where you’re staying.

Multiple Day Trips From Shkoder

If you’re wanting to spend some extra time sightseeing in Shkoder and beyond, then these multi-day trips are for you.

It’s a nice middle ground between going solely on day trips or planning everything yourself (which can be hard sometimes if you don’t speak Albanian).

By doing an organized multi-day trip, you can fully enjoy rather than worrying about arranging anything.

20. Three-Day Trip To Theth

Spending only a day in the village of Theth isn’t enough, especially because it is remote so a lot of time is spent on the road.

Those curvy, steep roads tire you out too – it is better to stay overnight. Trust me it is so beautiful and charming.

You will want to stay longer since there’s a lot of natural beauty to explore. So if you have the time, there is a three-day tour to Theth .

21. Two-Day Trip To Komani Lake & Shala River

Komani Lake is also a really good thing to do in Shkoder county. It’s similar to Theth though because it is remote, so it’s not the best for a single-day trip.

That’s why tours usually combine this with two other attractions nearby. One is the Shala River / Lumi i Shales , nicknamed Thailand of Albania because it looks so tropical.

Shala runs into Komani Lake, so you need a boat specifically going there. Check out the 2-day Komani & Shala River trip here.

22. Two-Day Trip To Komani Lake & Valbona

The other option is to do a combination, 2-day trip to Komani Lake and Valbona .

Valbona is a beautiful mountain village that is similar to Theth since it’s only on the other side of a mountain pass from Theth.

So this is a good trip that combines mountains and a boat tour.

7 Perfect Things to Do in Shkoder, Albania

Even if Shkoder, Albania is often an entry or departure point in the country when crossing the border with Montenegro , the city doesn’t get that much recognition among tourists. But in fact, this is one of the best places to visit in Albania ! Not only there are some cool things to do in Shkoder but the city can be also a great base to discover some incredible nature in the northern part of the country.

I finally managed to visit Shkoder recently – on my way to Montenegro, I’ve decided to spend one day in Shkoder to see what the city has to offer. The weather wasn’t unfortunately on my side as it was raining heavily but even then I managed to find and enjoy some great Shkoder attractions. And the poor weather resulted in some dramatic, moody views of the area around that were simply perfect.

If you are planning a trip to Albania be sure to head north to see this part of the country as well, so different from the popular south. You can use Shkoder as your base to explore this beautiful area but give the city some time too – it might seem a bit random at first but you might end up pleasantly surprised with Shkoder just like I did.

Where is Shkoder

With a population of a bit over a hundred thousand inhabitants, Shkoder is the 5th largest city in Albania, located in the very north of the country, right on the shore of Lake Shkoder. Tirana , the capital of Albania, is 100 km south of Shkoder and the border with Montenegro is only 10 km away from the center of the city.

Why visit Shkoder

The majority of tourists who visit Shkoder come here because the city is a convenient stop on the way to/from the Albanian Alps (Accursed Mountains) or Montenegro which makes it a great opportunity to check what to see in Shkoder. And it has plenty, enough to spend at least one busy day here.

There are impressive ruins with beautiful views of the area around, the only photography museum in Albania (and a really good one at that), and incredible nature right on the outskirts. Even if you don’t plan to stay overnight here to continue your journey to another destination it’s worth visiting Shkoder as one of the day trips from Tirana .

How to get to Shkoder

There are buses and minibusses at least every hour from Tirana to Shkoder, departing from the bus station in the northern part of the capital and arriving at the central part of Shkoder (Sheshi Demokracia). The journey takes around 2 hours and the ticket should cost around 400 leke.

There are also direct buses from Montenegro (Ulcinj and Podgorica ) however the schedule is not that reliable so it’s best to ask before if they are really running. When I was going from Shkoder to Ulcinj there was supposed to be a bus at 9 in the morning (according to the info in the tourist information) but it never arrived so I was forced to take a taxi (which was 20€ so not that bad but still, that was not the plan).

You can also go from Tirana to Shkoder via Lake Koman – that’s what I did. I took the 5 am minibus from Tirana to Lake Koman, then took the return ferry on the lake and afterward caught the minibus to Shkoder, arriving in the city around 5 pm. It was a bit crazy but the views of the lake were mindblowing!

How to get around Shkoder

Some of the Shkoder attractions are located a bit away from the center – the best way to get to them is by bike. Shkoder is mostly flat (except for the castle) so riding around is a nice way to get around the city. The alternative is walking around (although some places are a bit too far for that) or catching a taxi, which shouldn’t be too expensive anyway.

Things to do in Shkoder

And now let’s finally talk about the best things to do in Shkoder.

Visit Rozafa Castle

Even if it is located a bit away from the center (some 3km), this is definitely the biggest of all the Shkoder attractions. The impressive ruins of the 14th-century castle, built on the steep hill near the shore of the Shkoder Lake and at the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers towers above the area, offer spectacular views of the city and beyond. You can clearly see the amazing Lake Shkoder from here (including its part in Montenegro), on a clear day you can also admire the panorama of the nearby breathtaking Accursed Mountains. The legend says that the name of the castle, Rozafa, is a testimony to the woman who was buried inside the walls to support the structure.

But while the views are the reason itself why it’s worth visiting Shkoder Castle, the ruins are pretty great too. Since the hill the castle is built on has been at a crossroads already in ancient times, it was inhabited already back then. The recent works on the hill confirmed that this was the most important center of the Illyrian culture in the territory of Albania.

The ruins we can see today date back to Venetian times who took over the castle in 1396 and expanded it. The most important event in the castle’s history was the battle of Shkoder in 1478-1479 when the heroic defense of the town was led from there.

During the Ottoman times, Rozafa Castle was the seat of the local administration and after they moved to the city in the second half of the 18th century, the army stayed there.

Today Rozafa Castle is one of the most important landmarks in Albania, popular among tourists visiting the country. Inside the castle, you can see three courtyards with traces of the past clearly present there. You will see remnants of the Illyrian wall, medieval cisterns, and Venetian residences. Next, you will find the ruins of the Church of St. Stephen from the 13th century which was transformed into a mosque during Ottoman rule. In the last courtyard, you can visit the museum that tells the long and turbulent history of the place.

Before visiting the castle check the opening hours (I almost missed visiting it). There is a small fee to visit the ruins and another ticket to see the museum.

Wander around the center

The center of Shkoder might not offer many attractions but it’s really pleasant and perfect for wandering around.

The main pedestrian street, Rruga Kolë Idromeno, is lined with numerous cafes and restaurants and is a favorite place for locals to go for a stroll. That’s also where you will find the impressive Ebu Beker Mosque, built in the 1990s and recently renovated to its shining look.

When wandering around you will also stumble across numerous statues (some of them pretty weird) as well as the clocktower without the actual clock. Altogether the nicely renovated center is a great place to feel and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

Visit the Photography Museum

Marubi National Museum of Photography is the only photography museum in Albania, located conveniently on the pedestrian Rruga Kolë Idromeno in the center. Its origins date back to the mid-19th century when the Italian artist Pietro Marubbi founded the ‘Photo-Studio Marubbi’ in Shkoder which was later led by three generations of the Marubbi family.

Today the museum, located in a nice historical building, shows a great collection of photos showing the development of Shkoder and Albania in the past two centuries. Even if you are much into photography it’s worth visiting the place to see those historical images and what life used to be like in the area. Besides the photographs, you can also see here old cameras or the photo darkroom, as well as the temporary exhibitions.

Enjoy Shkoder Lake

Shkoder Lake is the largest lake in the Balkans, divided between Albania (1/3) and Montenegro (2/3). The area is heaven for all bird lovers, around 280 kinds of birds live here (which is around 50% of bird species in Europe). Some of the birds you can see here include pelicans (very rare in Europe), herons, and cormorants.

But even if you are not into ornithology you would still enjoy Shkoder Lake. The lake is surrounded by amazing mountains that together with the pristine nature create a beautiful landscape.

The most popular activity here is a boat ride and I can definitely recommend it. You can see the lake from a completely different perspective and then you will be able to appreciate it to the fullest. You can also rent a SUP or kayak to enjoy water activities – click here for details .

The easiest access to the lake on the Albanian side is from Shkoder. Head to the nearby Shiroke village (not far from the castle) and wander along the lake or go on a boat trip. This is such a pleasant and easy getaway from the hustle and bustle of the central part of the city.

See Mesi Bridge

Located some 5 km away from Shkoder, Mesi Bridge is a perfect example of Ottoman architecture. It was built over the Kir river in the 18th century by the local Ottoman pasha. The bridge is made of stone and has twelve arches. Together with the surrounding landscape, it is one of the most picturesque places to visit in Shkoder and around.

Stay at Hotel Tradita

I hardly recommend hotels as attractions in the city but Hotel Tradita really was one of the highlights of my trip to Shkoder (and because of heavy rains I had to stay inside much more than I planned).

As the name indicates, the hotel is designed in the traditional style. Both rooms and common areas are full of local artifacts that are such a beautiful addition. You can also enjoy delicious local food here and in the evenings you can listen to live regional music. The prices are affordable and definitely a good value for enjoying the local culture.

Go for day trips

Shkoder can be also used as a base for some great day trips around North Albania or even Montenegro.

Besides spending the day enjoying Shkoder Lake, you can also head to the magnificent Accursed Mountains to admire some breathtaking views or go for the ferry ride on incredible Lake Koman and see the mind-blowing landscape around.

Since Montenegro is only a short drive away you can hop across the border and visit Ulcinj or Stari Bar with impressive remnants of the stone town destroyed by the earthquake in 1979.

Shkodēr: two nights in albania’s scenic north.

Note : I’m continuing the travelogue I began a few weeks ago about the recent visit that my wife Mary Pat Treuthart and I made to Albania with our Spokane friends Ann and Matt. Click here to begin the series.

We arrived Shkodēr , a city that sits at the southern end of Lake Scutari, early in the evening of May 22. Our driver/tour guide Martin Mustafa had no problem finding our hotel, Hotel Tradita , which sits on the city’s main drag.

No less an authority than the Encyclopedia Britannica states this: “Shkodër is the most historic town in Albania.” Enough said there.

Here’s how Booking.com , not exactly the most objective of sources, describes the place where Mary Pat had booked our rooms: “(O)ne of the oldest and most historic places in Albania, Hotel Tradita is a traditionally decorated boutique hotel. It features a locally famous restaurant and bar with a spacious terrace that serves homemade delicacies.”

That, of course, is ad-speak narrative. It took Martin to amplify things by informing us that the building, which dates to 1694, was the house where the famous Albanian poet Filip Shiroka once lived.

Furthermore, Martin told us both that Lake Scutari (also known as Lake Skadar) is the biggest lake in all of the Balkans and that Albania shares it with the country that lay directly north: Montenegro .

We checked into the hotel after saying goodbye to Martin, who had to return to Tirana. Our plans were to stay two nights in Shkodēr, after which Martin would drive us south to Albania’s coast. Since we would have no transportation while in Shkodēr, we’d have to figure that part out. But working around such problems are always a part of international travel.

Our rooms were comfortable enough, though we had to climb a number of steps to get up to them (so much for “boutique”). Since we had enjoyed such a big meal at the late lunch we had enjoyed at the winery/restaurant Mrizi I Zavane , we weren’t interested in eating dinner.

But there’s always room for gelato. So after getting settled, as what looked to be a full moon rose in the darkening sky, we went for what the Italians call a passeggiata (or a stroll) through the city center. (To catch a feel for what it was like, this YouTube video that I found will give you, a good idea).

The high point of our passeggiata was passing by the picturesque Ebu Bekēr Mosque , which was built in the 18th century. Demolished by Albania’s former communist government, the mosque was renovated in 1995 (with, reportedly, funds provided by Saudi Arabia).

The low point of the stroll, surprisingly enough, was the gelato. Not only was the scrawny kid who took our order one of the only rude Albanians we met during our entire nine-day trip, but the stracciatella (an Italian version of chocolate chip ice cream) we ordered featured at best only a couple of sprinkles of chocolate. (Travel note: When in Shkodēr, avoid Gelateria Bell’Italia – which, I have to add, has to be the most ironic name ever for a gelateria).

Since we would be without Martin for a couple of days, we decided to see what kind of deal we could make with a local cab driver. And, fortunately, the guy we booked turned out to be great – and, as with pretty much everything else in Albania, inexpensive.

First, he took us to Rozafa Castle , the remains of an ancient fortress that sits on a promontory that offers an imposing view not just of the city center some two miles in the distance but also the lake beyond and, in the distance, the stark green and gray mountains of Montenegro.

Afterward, our new driver took us to the Bar Restaurant Elite, an eatery with outdoor seating right off the lake.

At that point we had a decision to make: Our driver offered to drive us up the coast and into Montenegro, a country that three of us hadn’t yet visited (Mary Pat had been there years before). We were tempted, but one of us (I plead guilty) had left his passport back in the hotel, so … we had to decline.

As an alternative, he took us to two of Shkodēr’s more popular sites. The first was the Mesi Bridge , a stone construction on the Kir River that built in the late 18th century (around 1770, according to Wikipedia). Matt and I walked across while our wives took photos of us from the nearby modern bridge.

The second site was the Venice Art Mask Factory , a business that owner Edmond Angoni founded in 1997 after living abroad for many years – including several in Venice, Italy. We were given a tour of the factory, which features an impressive collection of exquisite masks, each of which is made by hand on the premises.

The day ended when, later that night when – after saying goodbye to our driver – we walked a few blocks to the Aroma Restaurant . Over our Italian dinner (prosciutto and burrata appetizer, soup, spaghetti, risotto and glasses of raki for some of us), we recalled the day’s most pleasant encounter.

It had taken place at Rozafa Castle when we were approached by a group of high-school-age students. One of the members of the group, a small, extroverted boy, called out to us. “Hello Germans!” he said. Clearly he had mistaken our nationality, and that of Matt’s in particular.

That was when Matt, who is fluent in several languages – and who had studied Albanian in preparation for this trip – answered back in their native language. His linguistic ability, not surprisingly, excited the kids. They conversed both in Albanian and English with Matt for several minutes, impressed that an American had taken the trouble to learn their language.

“I’ll never forget you,” the same boy told Matt when we parted ways.

The feeling was, and remains, clearly mutual.

Albania has never been more popular with travelers than it is now. Joel Balsam, author of the Albania chapter in the new Western Balkans guidebook , shares his expert tips for exploring this singular country.

Is it just me or does it feel like everyone is talking about traveling to Albania ? It’s been like that for a few years, and it’s easy to see why.

TikTok-adored Adriatic beaches with turquoise-painted water line the southwestern coast, the Albanian Alps provide perfect hiking terrain, there’s amazing ancient architecture, and Albania is far cheaper than nearby Croatia, Greece and Italy.

But for every positive pitch about why you should book a trip to Albania right this instant, there are its detractors – some seem to think that Albanian gangs elsewhere in Europe represent the average person in Albania. In short: they don’t, and the locals you’ll encounter in Albania are honest, curious and welcoming.

Here’s what you should know for your first time visiting Albania.

When should I go to Albania?

Europe’s obsession with lazy beach days and cheap flights make Albania’s best accessible beaches, Ksamil and Saranda, good and truly swarming from June through September. If you want a little more peace and quiet, plan a visit in May, though the sea will be chilly. Better yet, go between September and December, which are probably the best months to visit Albania overall as the weather is still lovely and there are fewer visitors.

If visiting in winter, stick to Tirana , the capital city, where you can warm up in its many atmospheric restaurants and bars like Komiteti , which serves many different flavors of rakija  (fruit brandy). Activities in much of the rest of the country shut during winter.

How much time should I spend in Albania?

If you only have a weekend, fly to Corfu in Greece and take the ferry over to Saranda to see the Albanian Riviera . Or land in Tirana to enjoy the capital’s terrific food and historic sights.

If you have time for a road trip, you can cover Albania highlights like Tirana, a beach on the coast and one of Berat or Gjirokastra in a week. Allow for more time if you want to hike in the Accursed Mountains or if you plan to take public transport – Albanian buses are notoriously unreliable and slow.

Is it easy to get in and around Albania?

There’s just one international transport hub in Albania at Tirana International Airport. But if you want to visit the southwestern beaches it’s better to fly to Corfu and take the short ferry ride over.

Once inside Albania, getting around is, sadly, very challenging. Communist-era furgon shared minibuses that run between towns belong in a museum and don’t have consistent timetables. They also have a bad habit of breaking down.

Driving is more convenient, though it comes with plenty of warnings. Many complain about Albania’s aggressive drivers and speedy sports cars (likely to be a Volkswagen or Mercedes). Personally, I don’t find driving in Albania to be that bad, especially on the main highways – and you really should stick to the highways as country roads aren’t always well maintained.

Hiring a car is also a headache, with international brands charging a premium and only maintaining offices at Tirana airport. Local car hire companies are cheaper and can be found outside the airport, but you’ll have to pay cash or bank transfer, meaning you won’t be able to use insurance protections from your credit card if it comes with those.

Top things to do in Albania

You may have seen it on Instagram – now’s your chance to swim from Albania’s picture-perfect beaches. Ksamil, the country’s most popular beach, is indeed gorgeous, but more expensive than anywhere in the country and stupidly crowded in summer – there isn’t even room to put down a beach towel. Travel up the coastline to find quieter beaches in and around Himara and Dhërmi and take a boat tour to “secret” beaches inaccessible to cars. 

If you do go to Ksamil, don’t you dare miss Butrint , a jaw-dropping Greek and Roman city.

Bar hop in Tirana's Blloku neighborhood

During Albania’s communist era from 1946–1991, Tirana’s Blloku neighborhood was blocked off to the public as a private residence for party officials. When Albania’s democratic revolution finally toppled the regime, the gates to Blloku swung open and the neighborhood has since become a place to see and be seen. Hip cafes and bars with plant-filled terraces line the streets, and there are plenty of cool clubs as well. My personal favorite is Radio Bar .

Visit the "museum towns" of Berat and Gjirokastra

For amazing architecture, travel to Albania’s UNESCO-recognized “museum towns”. In Berat, explore a city-sized castle atop the hill and wind through tiny stone alleyways. Don’t miss the city’s prized windows, which are best viewed from across the Osum River.

In Gjirokastra, the architecture is no less remarkable. Walk up the hill (you’ll be doing a lot of that here), to see ancient homes with heavy stone tile roofs and its impressive castle. Underneath the city, wander through communist-era bunkers – there’s a huge one beside the town hall.

My favorite thing to do in Albania

What truly won me over in Albania is the country’s mountainous north, starting with Shkodra . The artsy student city is easily the most bike-friendly place I’ve seen in Eastern Europe and a great base for exploring nearby peaks.

In three days, you can take a ferry to Valbona , hike a section of the Peaks of the Balkans trail linking Albania with Kosovo and Montenegro and jump into cobalt “blue eye” ponds in Theth . Accommodations in Shkodra can organize the circuit for you.

How much money do I need for Albania?

Few places in Albania accept card payments. You can take out local currency, lek, from ATMs, with a steep transaction fee or exchange cash at money changers. At the time of writing, €1 equals 100 lekë.

• Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): 5000 lekë per night
• Ticket for a bus in Tirana: 40 lekë
• Inter-city bus: prices vary. A trip between Saranda and Tirana is 1600 lekë
• Coffee: 100 to 200 lekë
• Sandwich: 600 lekë
• Dinner for two: 2000 lekë
• Beer/pint at the bar: 300 lekë

Is Albania safe?

Contrary to what many say, Albania is safe. Pickpocketing barely happens, and crime associated with Albanian organized crime elsewhere in Europe has little to do with the average traveler’s experience.

Is Albania religious?

Most Albanians identify as Muslim, but you’ll rarely see locals display their faith in public with traditional clothing. You will, however, see plenty of mosques as well as a lot of churches. 

Despite Albania appearing quite secular, it’s still respectful to dress conservatively outside of Tirana and the beaches. If entering a popular mosque, there should be extra clothing to cover up during your visit.

Is it worth visiting Kosovo while in Albania?

A visit to Kosovo, Albania’s neighbor to the east, is easy, and border guards will rarely even stop you to check your passport. The two countries are strongly linked, with the vast majority of people in both identifying as ethnic Albanian – their division is a result of border lines drawn by Western European powers.

In Kosovo, you’ll find prettier mountain trails along with historic Prizren, with its many gorgeous places of worship and castles. Also, check out burgeoning Pristina , which looks more like a Western European city by the day.
