Sanford International and SDGA partner on junior golf tour

The Sanford International and the South Dakota Golf Association  are teaming up to offer multiple opportunities for youth golfers in the state and surrounding areas this summer.

The SDGA Junior Tour presented by the Sanford International will consist of 23 events from May 29-July 18, with four divisions ranging in age from 7-18.

“The extra enthusiasm for golf that the Sanford International has brought to the region in just one year is amazing,” said Tom Jansa, executive director of the SDGA. “We are excited to work with Greg Conrad and his team to enhance the experience youth golfers have on the course this summer.”

Tour members will have special opportunities related to the Sanford International, a PGA TOUR Champions event that will be held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Sept. 16-22.

“It is so important that golfers of all ages and abilities have quality events to play in,” said Greg Conrad, tournament director of the Sanford International. “The SDGA does a phenomenal job of getting golfers involved in the sport at an early age, and we are thrilled to play a role in this tour.”

Registration for the SDGA Junior Tour presented by the Sanford International is now open at sdga.org/junior-tour .

Golfers battle elements on SDGA Junior Tour stop

south dakota junior golf tour

Conditions for golf were less than ideal for those competing in the South Dakota Golf Association Junior Tour at Lee Park Golf Course on Tuesday.

However, despite a persistent rain, golfers were still able to record competitive scores during the second day of a two-day stop in Aberdeen (golfers were at Moccasin Creek County Club on Monday).

“The first nine it was pretty bad, but I still played pretty well,” said Groton’s Brevin Fliehs of the rain. “I started off the second nine not too good, but I finished well.”

He said the conditions made the game a bit more challenging than it normally is.

“It’s hard,” the 14-year-old said. “There’s a lot of things to think about.”

Fliehs got his mind back on track following one tough hole in particular.

“The first hole on the second nine, I didn’t have it,” Fliehs said, “but I started getting my mind together and shooting some better scores.”

The weather didn’t seem to bother Olivia Braun of Aberdeen. The 13-year-old grew accustomed to cold, damp weather while golfing for Aberdeen Central this past spring.

“I’m actually kind of used to it, because during the season in high school golf we’ve kind of golfed in this weather before,” Braun said. “You just kind of have to do it, it’s South Dakota, you know.”

Braun switched schools to get a look at tougher competition.

“I actually switched schools from Roncalli to Aberdeen Central,” she said. “I think it was a good change, because I got to golf at higher levels. I think that was good for me.”

While Braun has already developed a solid game for someone her age being a key member of Central’s varsity as a seventh-grader, she said there is still plenty of room for improvement. When asked what it takes to be a good golfer, Braun responded, “You know, that is a tough question. I have no idea.”

Mason Carrels is finally getting some golf in. Unlike the Class B boys players or all of the girls golfers, Carrels did not golf this spring because Class A boys golf in the fall.

Instead, the 17-year-old was plenty busy competing in both tennis and track and field for Roncalli.

“I started towards the end of May after all that stuff kind of finished up,” Carrels said. “I’d go out late at night and just kind of play on the course since I live out there. That kind of helped transition into it a little bit.”

Carrels was pleased with his score on Tuesday, but said he can do better.

“I kind of like where my game is at right now, I just didn’t play as good as I wanted to,” Carrels said. “I definitely can get that number down.”

When asked what his favorite sport is, Carrels did not even pick one of his three most recent sports.

“Hockey is my favorite,” he said. “It’s always going to be hockey.”

Another person with a hockey background had a nice day on the course at Lee Park. Morgan Jones of Aberdeen won her division. She said she has several goals while competing on the Junior Tour.

“When I’m playing, I’m competing against myself and the people I’m playing with,” Jones said. “But then I’m also trying to work on technique. If I’m struggling with something, I’m working to fix that during the round.”

The 15-year-old was a member of Central’s varsity this spring, which has also helped her overall game.

“I think it’s pushed me a lot to just keep getting out there, and just getting my score down and just stay consistent,” Jones said.

She plans to play golf deep into the fall if possible.

“I used to have a fall sport, but I quit before high school so I could focus more on golf and also hockey,” Jones said. “During the fall I usually just play more for fun, because there’s not as many tournaments.”

GreatLIFE Junior Tour

Mission statement.

The mission of the GreatLIFE Jr. Tour is to enrich the lives of junior golfers by helping build relationships that will last a lifetime while enjoying the wonderful game of golf.

The purpose of the GreatLIFE Jr. Tour is to provide affordable playing opportunities for kids to play competitive golf.

Eligibility

All junior golfers under 18 and any college student under the age of 22. The field size is limited to the first 93 golfers to sign up. All golfers should be able to get around the golf course without unduly delaying play and with minimal supervision. They should be able to post a score of double par or less on most of the holes.

All tournaments are 18-hole stroke play events. All play is in twosomes and threesomes to improve the pace of play. In most cases the first group of players will finish around the 4-hour mark with the last group around 4 ½ hours. We will hold the awards ceremonies as soon as all the kids are done in an age group. We understand the importance of your time and to get the results and prizes out in a timely manner.

The membership fee is $20, which includes a GHIN handicap. GreatLIFE members will pay $15 per event and Non-GreatLIFE members will pay $25 per event. All tournament fees include green fees, range balls and lunch after play.

All divisions will win awards for each event. We will hand out medals and gift certificates to any of our GreatLIFE Pro Shops for the top three places in each division.

Golfers will play in the age group that they are eligible for that day of the tournament. Any golfers wanting to play up a division will be at the discretion of the committee. Please contact Jason Sudenga if you would like to play up a division.

The age groups are as follows: Ages 12 – Under Ages 13 – 15 Ages 16 – 18 Ages 19 – 22 (College students)

GreatLIFE Golf Lessons

The AJGA is the “PGA Tour” of junior golf and hosts junior tournaments across the country. PGA Tour Member Justin Thomas and many others have played in AJGA events along their journey to the PGA Tour.

Each division will use a points system similar to the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour. Players will receive points based on their results in each tournament. The leading points winner (16 – 18 boy’s and girl’s division) will be declared the GreatLIFE Jr. Cup Champion.

The points will be earned as follows:

Tournament Director

Having spent the last two years learning about the golf community in Fargo/Moorhead, Tom had an idea that could grow the game of golf for kids. After speaking to the Fargo Park District head golf pros, the Discover Junior Golf Tour was created under the umbrella of the Fargo Park District and with the complete support of the Solberg Family and Bell Bank.

Tom serves as Assistant Golf Pro at Edgewood and Tour Director for the Discover Junior Golf Tour. He has spent most of his career as a golf instructor and college golf coach and enjoys teaching, coaching and mentoring golfers of all ages and skill levels. He grew up in Ohio, but upon retirement moved to Fargo in 2021 and took the role of Director of Instruction at the Fargo Country Club. After learning more about the community and enjoying their time here so much, Tom and his fiance (Karen) decided to build a home in Fargo.

He is excited to bring a new kind of experience for juniors in Fargo that focuses on the player experience!
