Will need to renew passport which can be easily done on line.    When I contacted the Passport Office was advised to include a note explaining renewal was nesaasary due to the data leak not lost or stolen when returning current passport for official cancellation.  My passport still had five years before expiry!  Saga wi ll be notifying passengers about Experian Protection and will reimburse the cost of this together with costs of photos, passport and postage.  An unfortunate  situation but I personally think Saga have done their best to help.

Hopefully very rare occurrence.

But after my next Saga cruise we have 3 weeks till need to use passport for long holiday.

So has your passport been invalidated or are you changing it as a precaution against identity theft.

Will Saga pay for the fast track passport service

As someone who has had their identity stolen due to a data breach that I wasn't notified of, I feel for all of you. Sounds like Saga are doing all they can to assist.

It was Barclays' fraud team that told me where my data had come from, after a loan from them had been taken out in my name.

Have decided to follow advice from Saga to renew passport which was easy to do on line.  Would recommend you contact Passport Office to see if you can get renewal done quickly. Saga said they will reimburse all expenses so might be worth checking for fast track costs if you explain the urgency.

Cool Cruiser

Is this a new data breach, or is it the release of information relating to an earlier one?

It’s a new one.  There was a data breach in Norway relating to passport details of people on the 26th June cruise on Spirit of Adventure.

Thanks for the information to add a note when returning the passport for a new one. As I'm sailing again soon I'm going to wait until I'm home to do this as don't want the stress of will I get it back in time. Even fast tracted. No financial data has been leaked but I am checking my bank account daily. I'm cool about it.

Mine was a theoretical question,  as except for summer when we don't  travelbout of Cornwall , then often like our next cruise,  have only 3 weeks between travel.

I was caught in the Capita breach via pension , get on Experian ASAP and put credit lock on. If scammers can't do a credit search,  can't take out a loan.

After putting the credit lock on with Experian, did your credit card still work?

Saga will be sending out details about Experian shortly. So am waiting to hear from them.

Yes everything I had worked, it's about new cards , new loans etc

To open a new credit card (to get Avios) had to go into Experian switch credit lock off , apply for new card (online), get accepted,  then 30 mins later switch credit lock back on, easy.

Thank you for that, my husband is one of the Capita victims. He’s a big Avios fan too!

I was also caught in that Capita breach. and used Experian credit lock. Credit lock did affect insurance renewals.  I found subsequently that the automatic renewal of vehicle and house insurance policies did not go through automatically, as apparently an insurance renewal involves a credit check. in both cases the company phoned me and I used debit card to renew  via the phone call so not really a problem though it took me a bit of time to work out why the auto renewals had failed.

Thanks for that , I've never noticed this. But come to think of it , every time I  get notice of auto renewal price, a quick  comparison site check , I can get it cheaper. Often with same company. So I  end up negotiating and renewing on phone

Spirit of adventure, spirit of discovery, spirit of the moselle, spirit of the danube, spirit of the rhine, spirit of the douro, ms filia rheni ii, ms rex rheni, review of saga cruises.

Saga Cruises (Saga Shipping Ltd, saga.co.uk/cruises) is a British company, luxury cruise brand and division of Saga Group. The company started passenger shipping operations under the travel brand name "Saga Cruises" in 1997, with the purchase of Saga Rose (former NCL ship MS Sagafjord), Saga Rose was the flagship until 2004 when Saga Ruby was bought from Cunard Line (previously named MS Caronia). Saga Travel's CEO is Nick Stace.

The shipowner Saga Group/Saga plc (1951-founded, headquartered in Folkestone, Kent England, UK) is a London Stock Exchange-listed company specializing in travel and insurance. Currently, Saga plc is managed by Mike Hazell (CEO) who in 2024 succeeded Euan Sutherland (2020-23).

Company history and changes

While on its final cruise in the Caribbean, Saga Ruby had one of its generators fail disabling the air-conditioning plant. Then it was decided to cancel the sailing and head for a Western Mediterranean itinerary. Saga Ruby returned to Southampton on Jan. 9, 2014 due to bad weather. While in Funchal Madeira, the ship met up with Saga Sapphire for New Year's Eve fireworks display. Saga Ruby then departed for Gibraltar out of Southampton for the last time on January 10th and was handed over to her new owners on Jan 13, 2014.

In 2005, Saga Cruises introduced the "Spirit of Adventure Cruises" brand. In March 2006, MV Spirit of Adventure (former Orange Melody) entered into service. In 2013, Saga sold the brand.

For summer 2003, Saga Holidays chartered  Minerva  (1989-built) which sailed as "Saga Pearl". Saga Rose was retired in 2009 after a final 37-night Mediterranean voyage. Subsequently, the ship was laid up in  Gibraltar  and scrapped  in China in 2010. In 2014 was acquired Saga Ruby (former NCL ship MS Vistafjord), which last voyage was in January 2014.

Until 2020, Saga Holidays operated two ships under charter - Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl 2 . The former fleetmate Saga Ruby was built and launched under the name "MS Vistafjord" for NCL/Norwegian America Line. In 1983, the vessel was sold to Cunard, and in 1999 renamed "MS Caronia". In 2004, Cunard sold it to Saga. It was operated as "Saga Ruby" until 2014 when was sold to a Chinese company, renamed "Oasia", operated as a hotel ship until 2017, then scrapped at Alang India .

Earlier in 2009, Saga UK acquired Astoria (Saga Pearl 2). Followed a GBP 14 million drydock refurbishment of the 1981-built vessel. The upgrades included new Veranda Restaurant; new balcony cabins; new Library Lounge; a redesigned Spa, and renovations to both swimming pools. The ship has 126 twin-bed cabins, 25 twin or king-bed cabins, 42 double-bed cabins. Of all staterooms, 20 have balconies and 9 have French balconies. Saga Pearl 2 has 60 single cabins (almost 1/4 of all staterooms). Among Saga's signature trademarks are the shipboard Afternoon Tea service and ballroom dancing. Saga ships departure from UK ports ( Southampton and Dover) on cruises to the Canaries, Baltic, and the Mediterranean. Itineraries range between 7- and 24-days in length.

Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl 2 were both withdrawn from service/left the fleet after two new ships ( Spirit of Discovery /2019 and Spirit of Adventure /2020) were delivered. In August 2019 was announced that Saga Sapphire will be acquired by ANEX Tours (Turkey's largest travel agency/tour operator), starting operations for ANEX in mid-2020. However, due to the global health crisis in 2020, the 39-year-old liner was officially sold to ANEX Tours in July 2020. Renamed to "Blue Sapphire", it started operations for ANEX in 2021, offering roundtrips from Antalya Turkey to Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea ports.

  • In November 2019, after acquiring Thomas Cook Group's subsidiaries in Germany (Oger Tours, Bucher Reisen and Neckermann) and Russia (Intourist, 1929-founded USSR-Russia travel brand privatized in the 1990s by Vladimir Yevtushenkov), ANEX Tours became the world's second-largest tour operator - after TUI Group. The company's Chairman (Neset Kockar) commented that expects the annual passenger volume to increase to 8 million and the turnover to reach ~EUR 10 billion (~USD 11 B).
  • Thomas Cook Group plc (2007-founded / 2019- defunct ) was a British travel group formed by the merger of Thomas Cook AG (British-German, 2001-founded) and MyTravel Group plc (British, 1972-founded). Neset Kockar (ANEX Tours) was the second-largest shareholder in Thomas Cook Group plc - after Fosun International China.

In July 2022, SAGA UK marked the anniversaries of Spirit of Adventure (July 6th) and Spirit of Discovery (July 10th), announcing interesting facts about the boats and their guests. In three full years, Spirit of Discovery navigated ~145,000 NM/nautical miles, completed 48 voyages, visited 273 different destinations, and served 2825 shore excursions. In one year, Spirit of Adventure navigated ~80,000 NM, completed 23 voyages, visited 144 destinations, and served 1617 shore excursions. Both vessels served ~36,9M meals, ~5,7M eggs, ~9,2 tons of lobster, ~13,5 tons of Dover sole, ~190 tons of smoked salmon, ~668,000 bottles of wine. ~12,000 customers used the onboard spas for massages.

In January 2024, Saga Group announced that it is exploring the option of a "partnership arrangement" for its ocean cruise business (including the potential sale of a stake in the division or selling the ships Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery) to unlock capital. In the period August 1, 2023, through January 29, 2024, Saga Group reported significant revenue growth (10-15%) over the same period in 2022-23, as well as ~30# increase (year-on-year) in revenue from its OCEAN division.

In 2017, Saga UK ordered two new cruise ships with capacity under 1000 passengers, each vessel with a total of 540 cabins and suites. The shipbuilder is Meyer Werft ( Papenburg Germany ). Unlike all previous Saga ships, these two are fully-owned by the company.

The vessels were scheduled for deliveries in 2019 July ( Spirit of Discovery ) and 2020 August ( Spirit of Adventure ). This is a new series of polar-class expedition ships with ice-strengthened hulls. Each costs USD 346 million (GBP 280M / EUR 310M) and has a total of 540 staterooms (cabins and suites), of 100 are single cabins (designed for solo travelers, no single supplement required), which is approx 20% of all cabins. The other staterooms are in categories Standard Balcony, Deluxe Balcony, Mid-Ship Suite and larger suites.

Among the signature venues onboard are the Britannia Lounge (2-level Atrium bar lounge), The Verandah (specialty restaurant) and an outdoor (alfresco dining) restaurant. Each vessel has two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor).

Saga Cruises new ship (The Verandah restaurant)

At the end of March 2017 was announced the name selected for the first ship - "Spirit of Discovery" (scheduled delivery June 2019). The second vessel was ordered in September 2017 - "Spirit of Adventure" (scheduled delivery August 2020).

Saga Cruises new ship

In mid-September 2018 was announced that starting January 2020, Saga's new ships deals will be all-inclusive. Fares include unlimited (shipboard served) house spirits, beers, wines (by the glass) and soft drinks. Company's packages also include:

  • UK travel package (to/from departure port), Shuttle bus transfer (to the nearest downtown from the port)
  • Onboard gratuities, Porterage
  • Onboard Welcome cocktail party
  • All onboard meals, afternoon tea, live entertainment
  • Unlimited tea and coffee (selected ship venues)
  • 24-hour room service
  • premium service (2 staff members for 3 passengers)

In early-March 2019, Saga announced that the company's both newbuilds (the sisterships Adventure and Discovery) are all-inclusive. This means that Saga cruise fares are inclusive of specialty restaurant dining, drinks (wine, beer, house spirits, soft drinks), 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi, gratuities, transfer (chauffeur service to/from homeport for cruise passengers based within 250 ml / 402 km distance). Shore excursions remain optional and at additional cost. The cruise company offers complimentary shuttle bus services in all ports where the town/city is over 0,5 km from the ship.

In early-November 2019 was announced the shipbuilding order for Spirit of the Rhine (2021-inaugurated, 192-passenger riverboat). In early-February 2021 started the construction of a second newbuild riverboat - Spirit of the Danube (2022-inaugurated, sistership). Since 2024 is also chartered Spirit of the Douro (2017-built, owned by Mystic Invest via Douro Azul ).

In late-March 2022, Saga announced a 4-ship expansion project for its riverboat fleet, ordering 4x ships (Spirit of the Moselle, Spirit of the Main, Spirit of the Elbe, Spirit of the Rhone), with the first entering service in 2023 and the rest following one vessel per year.

Saga Holidays ocean- and river cruising experience

Saga Cruises offers both Ocean and River cruise travel vacations. All the company's vessels are chartered. The cruising experience is classic, elegant and comfortable. Passengers are able to choose from contemporary amenities such as modern spas, Internet cafes, alternative dining in intimate restaurants. Do not expect shopping centers, casino or lustrous shows - Saga passengers like the relaxed and good-mannered social life. Traditional English tea is served each afternoon; ballroom dancing is presented nightly.

Saga passengers are more adventurous than it might be imagined. They seek a high level of comfort and service while they are careful not to squander pensions on gambling (the reason why there are no casinos on Saga's ships). They also demand fine food, that is well-prepared, from varied menus. Some of the mainstream cruise lines may get away with fortnightly or weekly menu cycles. That wouldn't be welcomed by Saga Cruises customers who are free to stay onboard for back-to-back cruises.

When you are not out or it is one of those lazy days at sea onboard Saga ships, you will be surprised by the great number of onboard activities. You will have the opportunity to join painting or computer classes, keep fit with Pilates and yoga, enjoy swimming, attend a talk from guest speakers. Relax with new and old friends, or look for some quiet time in ships' cozy areas. Other diversions include the beauty salon and spa - go for a pampering treatment or a massage or try the gym - go for a refreshing yoga course. A well-stocked library with thousands of books is also provided. Another choice is using one of the computers and keep in touch with family and friends.

In the evening onboard Saga ships, while heading to the next destination before dining, enjoy an aperitif in onboard bars, or work up with pre-dinner dance classes. At formal nights (one for a week-long cruise, two for a 14-night cruise) enjoy the feeling of occasion. Later take your seat for a show, go dancing, watch a film or socialize with friends - you may even enjoy a nightcap accompanied with live music in the inviting lounges and bars.

On select cruise itineraries, you will be entertained by celebrities. But the best part of all is that with no children on board, kids' games arcades or clubs taking up space, everything aboard is designed for your pleasure.

No matter which Saga ship you choose (ocean or river), each mealtime is going to be an exciting dining experience. Good breakfast is essential when you have a day full of activities - plenty of choices await for you for the day ahead. Choose from a waiter-served meal, the buffet onboard Saga Ruby, or eat out on deck. Opt for full English breakfast brought to the cabin. There are plenty of things to tempt you at lunchtime: choose from the buffet or enjoy a cooked-to-order lunch in the main restaurant.

Afternoon Tea is a daily cruising tradition with tempting cakes, pastries, finger sandwiches. Dinner - the day's highlight - is always waiter-served, one-sitting, sometimes with six courses. A talented team led by the Executive Chef prepares the meals using the finest and freshest/locally sourced ingredients.

Delicious wines from well-stocked "cellars" are recommended from sommeliers who are also on hand. Main courses, including game, fish, meat, vegetarian dishes, are followed with desserts from a selection of souffles, tarts, pavlovas, petits fours. The best of all is that you will never feel rushed to end your meals or have to wait for guests, as flexible arrangements make sure you dine at any time between 7-9 pm.

Saga Cruises customers

The Saga cruise line targets 50-and-older customers and is kids-free. The company sells directly to the public, not counting on travel agents. Allowing traveling companions who are 40+ years old is beneficial to couples who want to cruise together with grown-up families and in-laws, and also to those who need assistance and personal care. Saga's customers are elderly and almost exclusively British, with occasional passengers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, rarely Japan.

Saga UK provides free chauffeur service (door-to-door) for passengers who live within 75 mi (120 km) of cruise departure ports, and also shared chauffeur for up to 250 mi (400 km) homeport distances. Alternatives include coach and rail transportation, or domestic flights (from the UK) which can be fare-included. Saga also offers free parking to all its cruise passengers.

Saga Cruises enjoys a high repeat booking rate (about 75%).

To attract first-timers, since 2016 Saga offers "Love it First Time". By this initiative, a full refund is guaranteed to anyone who doesn't enjoy the company's cruising vacation product. SAGA UK guarantees that if passengers find that the experience is not for them, they can leave the ship at the next available call port. The "Love it First Time" offer applies only to new bookings and first-time customers.

Saga Holidays fly-cruise deals

For the end of 2017 (November and December), Saga Cruises offered 3 fly-cruises. The 8-, 11- and 12-night itineraries were available for booking with all-inclusive prices starting from around GBP 114 per person. Saga's "flight and cruise" deals are inclusive of airport and seaport transfers, all onboard meals, alcohol (wine by the glass / at lunch and dinner, house-brand spirits, cocktails, draught beers, lager), also soft drinks, afternoon tea, free Wi-Fi and, all onboard gratuities.

The Nov 1st voyage included a flight from the UK to Funchal (Madeira), boarding there Saga Pearl 2, and the home flight from Lisbon back to the UK.

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, Saga Ocean Cruises suspended its fleet's passenger shipping operations by cancelling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures in the period March 15, 2020, through early-July 2021.

Operations resumed in 2021 with Spirit of Discovery (June 27) and Spirit of Adventure (July 26/ Maiden Voyage ). Saga UK requires all passengers to have had both doses of the COVID vaccine before boarding the ships.

All affected bookings received full monetary refund (100% of the fare paid) or 125% refund in FCC (future cruise credit) with rebooking made within 24 months.

Saga UK's "Cruise Price Promise" allows penalty-free cancellation up to 14 days prior departure. All shipboard employees (fleetwide) remained on the docked vessels. Both SAGA ships' berthing location (during the no-sail period) is London-Tilbury Port .

Depart from the UK and explore!

One of the many things that make Saga a desirable proposition is that nearly all of their sailings depart from th e UK . Leaving from either Dover or Southampton, Saga is a great choice should you wish to avoid flying to an overseas embarkation port. Plus, with complimentary door-to-door transfers (or free port parking) included, it really couldn’t be easier.

The destinations visited by Saga are largely European based and, as such, offer an array of itineraries in the Mediterranean, British Isles and the Baltic . Each itinerary is designed to offer a healthy mixture of relaxing sea days and excursion-laden visits to a spectacular range of ports. When exploring ashore, you will have the opportunity to explore independently or join a guided tour that can focus on anything from ancient history to the local food and wine.

Saga Cruises – Great for Solo Travellers

Saga Cruises are a hugely popular choice with solo travellers . More often than not, these can result in forging friendships that last far beyond the duration of the cruise.

In terms of accommodation, Saga Cruises offer more ‘solo’ staterooms and suites than any other cruise line. Each solo grade of accommodation is equipped with everything you will need for a pleasant ocean cruise, including an en suite bathroom, vanity desk and television (with DVD player). Sage will also provide you with your own cabin steward, who will be on-hand 24 hours a day.

USA gymnastics says arbitration court refuses to see new evidence in dispute over Jordan Chiles' bronze medal

The court of arbitration for sport voided an on-floor appeal by chiles' coach that vaulted her to third, and now will not consider new video evidence that u.s. gymnastics says proves their case., by staff and wire reports • published august 12, 2024 • updated on august 12, 2024 at 5:39 pm.

U.S. Olympic officials say they will now have to appeal a court ruling that resulted in American gymnast Jordan Chiles being asked to return the bronze medal  she won in the  Paris Olympics  floor exercise to a higher governing body.

It is the latest turn in the complicated judging controversy.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport voided an on-floor appeal by Chiles' coach that vaulted her to third, saying the appeal came 4 seconds beyond the 1-minute time limit for scoring inquiries.

The International Gymnastics Federation said Saturday night it would respect the court's decision and elevate Barbosu to third. The International Olympic Committee confirmed the ruling Sunday, announcing that it was reallocating the bronze from last Monday’s women’s floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu.

On Sunday, USA gymnastics said it had video proof that the ruling on the floor should stand, claiming that the new evidence showed the appeal was made well under the 1-minute mark.

On Monday, officials said that the CAS refused to consider the new evidence.

"USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented. We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan," read a statement.

Simone Biles sends love to Jordan Chiles after her floor final score is reversed by an arbitration court

CAS ruled Saturday that Team USA coach Cecile Landi's appeal to have 0.1 added to Chiles’ score came outside the 1-minute window allowed by the FIG. The ad hoc committee wrote that Landi’s inquiry came 1 minute, 4 seconds after Chiles' initial score was posted.

The IOC said in a statement it will be in touch with the USOPC regarding the return of Chiles' bronze and will work with the Romanian Olympic Committee to discuss a reallocation ceremony honoring Barbosu.

“The initial error occurred in the scoring by FIG, and the second error was during the CAS appeal process, where the USOPC was not given adequate time or notice to effectively challenge the decision,” said the USOPC statement, which was released Sunday.

It was unclear the exact process the appeal would take first. The two potential places the USOPC could take the appeal would be to Switzerland’s highest court, the Swiss Tribunal or the European Court of Human Rights.

CAS wrote Saturday that the initial finishing order should be restored, with Barbosu third, Romanian Sabrina Maneca-Voinea fourth and Chiles fifth. The organization added the FIG should determine the final ranking “in accordance with the above decision,” but left it up to the federation to decide who would get the medal behind gold winner Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and silver medalist Simone Biles of the U.S.

The FIG said it was the IOC’s call on whether to reallocate the medal. The IOC confirmed Sunday it would respect FIG's decision and seek to have Chiles' medal returned.

The rapid turn of events adds another layer to what has been a difficult few days for all three athletes.

Romanian gymnastics legend and 1976 Olympic champion Nadia Comaneci feared for Barbosu’s mental health because of the wrenching sequence in which she went from bronze medalist to fourth-place finisher.

“I can’t believe we play with athletes mental health and emotions like this… let’s protect them,” Comaneci  posted on X  earlier in the week.

Comaneci, at the same time, criticized the judges for the way they scored Maneca-Voinea’s routine — the gymnast was docked 0.1 points for stepping out of bounds, but viral replays showed she narrowly stayed inbounds. Comaneci urged the Romanian Olympic Committee to protest, which it did, but CAS denied that appeal.

Chiles hinted at the decision in an  Instagram story  on Saturday, indicating she is heartbroken and is “taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you.”

Jazmin Chiles, Jordan's sister, said on Instagram that Chiles was stripped of a medal “not because she wasn't good enough. But because the judges failed to give her difficulty and forced an inquiry to be made.”

U.S. teammates offered support to Chiles, a two-time Olympian.

"Sending you so much love Jordan,”  American star Simone Biles posted on Instagram . “Keep your chin up ‘Olympic champ’ we love you.”

“All this talk about the athlete, what about the judges?” six-time Olympic medalist Sunisa Lee added on Instagram. “Completely unacceptable, this is awful and I’m gutted for jordan.”

USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Saturday it is “devastated” by the ruling.

“The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring,” the organization wrote.

Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea were left outside the medals in the floor final after finishing with matching scores of 13.700. Barbosu thought she had won bronze over Maneca-Voinea via a tiebreaker — a higher execution score — and began celebrating with a Romanian flag.

Chiles was the last athlete to compete and initially given a score of 13.666 that placed her fifth, right behind Maneca-Voinea. Landi called for an inquiry on Chiles’ score after it was announced.

“At this point, we had nothing to lose, so I was like ‘We’re just going to try,‘” Landi said after the awards ceremony. “I honestly didn’t think it was going to happen, but when I heard her scream, I turned around and was like ‘What?’”

Judges awarded the appeal, leapfrogging Chiles past Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea.

Barbosu made it a point after returning home to Romania that she had no problem with Chiles.

“I only want for everybody to be fair, we don’t want to start picking on other athletes of any nationality,” Barbosu told reporters. “We as athletes don’t deserve something like that, we only want to perform as best as we can and to be rewarded based on our performance. The problems lie with the judges, with their calculations and decisions.”

Chiles’ mother, Gina Chiles, called out the critics in a post, writing she was “tired” of the derogatory comments being leveled at Jordan.

“My daughter is a highly decorated Olympian with the biggest heart and a level of sportsmanship that is unmatched,” Gina Chiles posted. “And she’s being called disgusting things.”

The uncertainty also tinges what had been a beautiful moment on the medal stand, when Chiles and Biles knelt to honor Andrade after the Brazilian star won her fourth medal in Paris.

“It was just the right thing to do,” Biles said about a moment that soon went viral, with even the  Louvre  itself suggesting it might be worthy enough for a spot somewhere in the vicinity of the Mona Lisa.

That memory now carries a complicated and emotional postscript.

Associated Press writers Will Graves, Stephen McGrath and AP Sports Writers Eddie Pells and Graham Dunbar contributed to this report.

Kevin costner reacts to ‘horizon’ bombing at the box office, changes to sequel’s release.

Kevin Costner is proud of his film “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One” — regardless of how it performed in theaters.

The former “Yellowstone” star, 69, wrote, directed and starred in the first installment of his new Western film series, which  flopped big-time at the box office upon its release in June.

The movie made made only $32 million on a $100 million budget. Costner reportedly spent $38 million of his own money on the film.

Kevin Costner at the "Horizon Chapter One" premiere in LA on June 24, 2024

The Oscar winner talked about his passion project’s underwhelming performance in an interview with E! News published Saturday.

“I’ve faced life with people being dismissive of me, he said. “But they can’t be dismissive of ‘Horizon,’ because now it’s out of their hands.”

“And they might point to the finish line—well, this is what it did at the box office—but I know that this movie is going to play for the next 50 years,” Costner added.

The father of seven went on, “There’s a moment in time where you want [your children] to see this movie. To understand that this is what their [ancestors] went through. It’s not just a western, it’s a history of migration and what they had to do to survive. And I’m really proud of it.”

Kevin Costner in "Horizon Chapter One"

Not only did “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One” bomb it theaters, but it also received scathing reviews from critics .

Kevin Costner in "Horizon Chapter One"

The Post movie critic Johnny Oleksinski wrote , “I could not fathom committing another 540 minutes of my time to this bloated ego trip.”

He added, “It’s hard to believe  Costner left ‘Yellowstone ‘ to make such an embarrassing, poorly told mess … There are more than 20 named roles scattered all over the place — the San Pedro Valley, the Montana Territory, the Western Santa Fe Trail — and viewers strain to care much for any of them, so bland and animatronic they all are.”

The “Horizon” franchise is a planned four-part film series, with the next sequel, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two,” originally set to debut in theaters on August 16.

Kevin Costner at the "Horizon" premiere in Berlin

But after “Chapter One” tanked, its follow-up was taken off the theatrical schedule .

The sequel will now have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, where the first movie will also screen.

“That was a nice development over there,” Costner said to E! News. “They understand that it’s a saga.”

“That part is exactly how I imagined it,” he continued. “I didn’t ever imagine [the releases] six weeks apart, it was always four months, or six months. But the studio saw an opportunity, they thought it could be something. I don’t feel that anymore.”

David Zaslav, Sienna Miller, Kevin Costner, Ella Hunt, Isabelle Fuhrman and Jena Malone at the "Horizon" premiere in LA

Continuing to defend his Western film franchise that also stars Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington , Luke Wilson and Giovanni Ribisi , Costner said, “I don’t really fall out of love with something I feel strongly about Until somebody convinces me otherwise it needs to go in another direction, that doesn’t happen.”

“I feel like my job is to bring something original to people. And it’s really hard to make a good western.”

Kevin Costner at the "Horizon" photocall in Cologne, Germany

Costner previously addressed the speculation that he quit “Yellowstone” — which is returning for the second half of its fifth and final season without the actor later this year — in favor of making the “Horizon” movies.

“‘Horizon’ didn’t cause problems for me,” he told CBS Mornings’ Gayle King in June. “I wanted to work more than once a year, and it was important that I made room for ‘Yellowstone’ and made room for ‘Horizon,’ but we just — people ran through deadlines, they were busy, they had a lot to do. But ‘Horizon’ was secondary to ‘Yellowstone.’ “

“But it still had to line up,” Costner added. “I had 400 people waiting for me, so I did things in a very limited amount of time.”

Port Everglades has various transportation options to suit every traveler’s needs. From cost-efficiency to speed, there are several ways you can seamlessly reach your terminal.

Independent shuttles : Many local companies offer shuttle services to and from the port. These are a budget-friendly option for both solo travelers and groups.

Cruise line shuttles : Most cruise lines also provide dedicated shuttles that directly connect from the airport to your cruise terminal. This makes the transfer from the plane to the Princess cruise terminal as smooth as possible.

Hotel-provided shuttles : Several hotels in the area offer shuttle services as part of their stay-and-cruise packages, adding that extra layer of convenience for guests.

Brightline train

The Brightline offers a fast and comfortable train service that connects Miami, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. It’s an efficient way to travel across these cities with an average ticket price of around $15-$20. You can check the schedule and station locations online to plan your journey and make sure you get to your terminal with plenty of time. In fact, the Brightline station in Fort Lauderdale is just a short drive to Port Everglades, which makes it a preferred transportation option for many travelers headed for a cruise.

Princess Cruises has partnered with Brightline to make travel a breeze. Brightline provides a convenient service where guests can check their bags upon boarding. Brightline will then deliver the bags directly to the cruise line, so passengers can relax and enjoy their train ride without any worries. All you have to do is book your Brightline ride, reserve your baggage delivery service, and sit back for your ride to Fort Lauderdale Station.

Uber/Lyft/Rental car

Many travelers find themselves landing in Miami, whether they're coming from other major cities across the U.S. or arriving from international destinations. This proximity can be a real advantage, offering more flexibility and convenience for your journey. Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port Parking

Park with ease at Port Everglades when you choose Heron Parking – designed to get you from your car to your cruise in no time. Arrive early for the best spots and start your vacation stress-free.

Heron Parking: This lot is located near Terminals 2 and it offers 1,818 spaces. Heron Parking is ideal for quick access to the Princess cruise ships.

Daily rates range from a maximum of $20-$25, with the first hour generally priced at $4 and up to 5 hours at $8. After that, additional hours are charged at $1 each, up to the daily maximum. These rates are designed to provide both flexibility and affordability for short and long-term parking.

For those looking to save on parking fees, consider checking independent lots around the port area. Often, these can offer competitive rates and may provide additional services like shuttle transport to the terminals.

Remember to arrive early, especially during peak cruise times, to secure the best parking spot and to allow yourself plenty of time to get to your boat without rushing. Follow the clearly marked signs or ask one of the friendly parking agents for assistance if you aren’t sure where to go. They are there to help you find your way quickly and efficiently so that you can start your cruise adventure with the right tone.

Stay in style before you sail. Whether you choose the bustling 17th Street Causeway, the stunning beachfront hotels or the vibrant downtown area, there's a perfect spot for every cruiser. Here are the three most recommended areas to stay:

17th Street Causeway:  Just minutes from the cruise port, this area is filled with a variety of hotels, with both luxury and budget-friendly accommodations. Fort Lauderdale Beach:  If you want to get your tan on before your cruise, Fort Lauderdale is a great place to stay. The beachfront hotels provide stunning ocean views and easy access to Fort Lauderdale’s famous sandy beaches. There is also bustling nightlife if you’re looking for some entertainment.

Downtown Fort Lauderdale:  For those interested in exploring the city’s cultural scene, staying downtown is a popular choice. Here, you will be close to everything from museums to theaters and art venues. Plus, there is a range of restaurants and bars that cater to a variety of tastes.

Each of these areas provides different advantages depending on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Depending on where you’re staying, you may even be able to walk from the cruise port to nearby hotels. Some locations on the 17th Street Causeway might be within walking distance, but others will require a short drive or shuttle ride.

Fodor’s Expert Review

saga cruises postal address

Saga Holidays, a U.K.-based travel and tour company, was founded in 1951 to offer vacation packages to mature travelers. It’s cruise program started in 1975 with charter sailings. Saga purchased its first ship in 1996, the venerable Sagafjord, and renamed it Saga Rose. Following the success of Saga Rose, her former sister ship Vistafjord was acquired in 2004 and sails as Saga Ruby , though that ship will be retired in 2014. Itineraries brim with longer sailings to far-flung corners of the globe, making Saga voyages destination oriented. Read More

Classic cruisers in every sense of the word, Saga’s passengers are travelers who expect inspiring itineraries coupled with traditional onboard amenities and comfortable surroundings. In the style of Saga Holidays’ land-based tours, Saga Cruises takes care of the details that discerning passengers don’t wish to leave to chance—from providing insurance and arranging visas to placing fruit and water in every cabin. For passengers embarking in U.K. ports (and almost all passengers are British), round-trip private car transfers are offered, or if a passenger lives more than 250 km from the port of embarkation, domestic U.K. flights. But passengers can also get rail travel or parking if they wish to travel more independently.

Activities and entertainment range from dance lessons to presentations of West End–style productions, from Internet lessons to lectures on wide-ranging topics. Wine tasting, deck game competitions, classical concerts, and even Bingo are found on the daily programs. Both ships have card rooms, but you won’t find casinos. With numerous accommodations designed for solo cruisers, Saga Cruises are particularly friendly for senior singles. Especially convenient on lengthy sailings, each ship features complimentary self-service launderettes and ironing facilities. In port, the line offers complimentary shuttle transfers to the town center from the cruise pier.

Top Reasons to Cruise

Is this line right for you, what to expect on board.

In addition to offering a wide selection of dishes to appeal to a variety of discriminating tastes, many British favorites find their way onto menus in the main restaurants.

Ingredients are high in quality, well-prepared, and served in a single leisurely seating. Vegetarian, sugar-free, and healthy selections are always alternatives. A traditional English tea is served every afternoon, and midnight buffets are set up in the Lido restaurants. While alcoholic beverages and wine are not included in the fare, bar and wine list prices are quite affordable.

Professional dancers, musicians, and cabaret artists entertain in the lounge every evening.

Passengers can also dance to live music in the ballroom, enjoy strolls on the decks, or sit peacefully in the library or variety of bars. The library lends DVDs to enjoy in the privacy of your cabin, or you can head to the cinema for a full wide-screen experience. Convivial bars promote relaxing conversation with fellow passengers.

Gentle exercise classes tailored to different levels of ability and fully equipped gyms are available for active seniors, and each ship has two swimming pools, one outdoors and one indoors.

Passengers can work on their golf swing at the practice nets, jog on deck, or book a fitness session with a personal trainer. Each ship has a hair salon, as well as a full-service spa with a broad menu of massages, facials, and aromatherapy treatments, including procedures tailored especially to mature cruisers.

Key cruising tips

Your shipmates.

Saga Cruises are exclusively for passengers age 50 and older; the minimum age for traveling companions is 40. On a typical cruise—particularly one of the longer itineraries—the average age of passengers may be quite a bit higher than 50. The overwhelming majority of passengers are from Great Britain, with a sprinkling of North Americans in the mix.

Dress on Saga ships is very traditional. While the requested attire on board is generally casual during the day, including sea days, by night there are three dress codes—formal, informal, and smart casual.

Junior Cruisers

There are no programs since children are not allowed.

The warm and friendly service staff provides polished, yet unobtrusive, service.

Gratuities are included in the fare, and additional tipping is not expected.

Past Passengers

The Britannia Club is Saga’s own loyalty program that offers exclusive benefits to regular travelers. There are four different membership levels within the club based on the number of nights cruised: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Sapphire each offer an increasing number of benefits to enjoy including special on-board cocktail parties, exclusive discounts and even a free cruise.

On screen, we’ve seen him come to rescue of his love interests countless times—whether as Maverick in Top Gun or Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise—but in real life, Tom Cruise’s dating history might as well be a blockbuster saga of its own.

Related: Get to know Tom Cruise’s kids with Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes

Cruise has been one of Hollywood’s golden boys for decades, and unsurprisingly, his romantic resume reads like a Who’s Who of the entertainment industry. From quick flings to multiple “I do’s,” the actor’s love life has already had more twists and turns than a Mission: Impossible plot—and even into his 60s, it doesn’t look like the Golden Globe-winner has any intentions of stopping his search for romance.

In a candid interview with Rolling Stone in 1986, a young Cruise shared his thoughts on dating. “ Relationships are hard ,” he admitted to the magazine. “You have to know when you’re going to be in a different place from someone else, you have to have the strength to separate. People are more prone to stay together for the security, which is something in my life that I have really not done, in relationships or even in business. If something’s not working, you’ve got to face it and move on.”

It looks like Tom was already giving us a sneak peek into the love life philosophy that would guide him throughout his career. Decades later, it has led to a dating history about as long as his filmography.

A look back at Tom Cruise’s girlfriends and dating history

Up ahead, we’re taking a look back at Tom Cruise’s dating history—from his early days in Hollywood to his high-profile marriages with Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, and beyond.

Melissa Gilbert (1981-1983)

Tom Cruise's Girlfriend & Dating History

Long before his Mission Impossible days, Tom Cruise was like any other struggling actor with dreams of making it big. He was still going by his real name, Tom Mapother, when he met Little House on the Prairie actress Melissa Gilbert. Their relationship was a teenage romance—and Gilbert still remembers it fondly.

“Actually, when I dated him, he was Tom Mapother still,” Gilbert revealed on an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in 2014. She was about 16 or 17 when they met, and their relationship was more innocent than anything. “I did not have sex with him. We made out, but honestly, there was no sex,” she shared.

Gilbert even played a supporting role in Cruise’s early career. “He was like a struggling, starving actor and I was working. I actually bought him his first set of dishes,” she joked.

Cher (1985)

Tom Cruise's Girlfriend & Dating History - Cher

For a brief moment of ’80s bliss, Tom Cruise dated the legendary Cher. While their time together was short, it certainly left an impact on the Moonstruck actress.

In a 2013 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen , Cher gushed about her “hot and heavy” relationship with Cruise, who ranked as one of her “top five” lovers ever. “He wasn’t a Scientologist then. It was pretty hot and heavy for a little minute,” she said.

Things seemed to end on a friendly note, as she only had positive things to say about Cruise. “He’s a great guy. The person that I knew was a great and lovable guy,” she added. We’ll take that as pretty high praise coming from a woman who’s dated some of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors!

Mimi Rogers (1986-1990)

Tom Cruise's Girlfriend & Dating History

Tom Cruise’s first walk down the aisle was with actress Mimi Rogers. The couple tied the knot in May 1987, just a year after meeting. For Cruise, this relationship marked a major milestone in his personal life.

“I’d never been in love before,” he gushed to Rolling Stone before their split. “Since I’ve been with her, it’s opened me up a lot. I think it’s helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything,” he said, adding, “She’s my best friend.”

Despite the initial passion, their relationship was short-lived. The pair divorced three years later in 1990, marking the end of Cruise’s first marriage.

Nicole Kidman (1990-2001)

Tom Cruise's Girlfriend & Dating History

One of Cruise’s most famous relationships to date was with Australian actress Nicole Kidman. Their union was the stuff of Hollywood dreams, spanning a decade and including two adopted children , Isabella Jane, born in 1992, and Connor Antony, born in 1995.

Cruise and Kidman seemed to have it all: successful careers, a beautiful family, and a love that appeared to be pretty unshakeable. But by 2001, the couple surprised fans with news of their separation.

Cruise remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind their split . “She knows why, and I know why,” he told Vanity Fair in October 2001. “She’s the mother of my children, and I wish her well. I think that you just move on. And I don’t say that lightly. I don’t say that with anything. Things happen in life, and you do everything you can, and in every possible way, and there’s a point at which you just sometimes have to face the brutal reality.”

Penelope Cruz (2001-2004)

Tom Cruise's Girlfriend & Dating History

After his divorce from Nicole Kidman, Cruise found love again with Spanish actress Penelope Cruz. The pair met on the set of Vanilla Sky in 2000 and went on to date for three years. Cruise appeared to be pretty smitten from the start: “As a person and on film, she invites you in, and she’s incredibly romantic, and yet, real, you know?” he  told  Vanity Fair  in January 2002. “I thought, My God, I’m your boyfriend. You’re my girlfriend! … Cruise and Cruz!”

However, like many relationships in Hollywood, the demands of their careers ultimately took a toll. The couple broke things off in March 2004, and a source told People magazine at the time that the relationship simply “ran its course.” The source added that their separate and distance-filled filming schedules had a lot to do with the breakup.

Sofia Vergara (2005)

Tom Cruise's Girlfriend & Dating History - Sofia Vergara

You didn’t have this one on your radar, did you now? As it turns out, Tom Cruise’s dating history includes a brief encounter with none other than Sofia Vergara. According to Andrew Morton, author of Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography , this rumored romance was more complicated than it seemed on the surface.

As part of his work with the church of Scientology, Morton claims that Cruise had to provide church leaders with a list of women he was interested in pursuing. Vergara, then an up-and-coming actor in the early 2000s, was reportedly on that list.

However, the relationship never fully materialized. Morton wrote, “It soon became clear that she was being auditioned for the biggest role of her life—Mrs. Tom Cruise. It was made clear that if she took the part, she would have to renounce her Catholic faith and convert to Scientology.” This apparent ultimatum seems to have been the deal-breaker for Vergara.

Katie Holmes (2005-2012)

Tom Cruise's Girlfriend & Dating History - Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise’s relationship with Katie Holmes was nothing short of a media sensation. Their whirlwind romance, punctuated by Cruise’s infamous couch-jumping incident on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show, captivated tons of attention during the early days of their relationship.

The couple welcomed daughter Suri in April 2006 and tied the knot in a lavish Italian ceremony later that year. For a time, they seemed to be the perfect Hollywood family. However, after nearly six years of marriage, Holmes filed for divorce in 2012. Details of their split remain private, but include many whispers about Scientology being at the crux of their split. What we do know, of course, is that the end of “TomKat” marked another major closed chapter in Cruise’s complex romantic history.

Elsina Khayrova (2023-2024)

Tom Cruise's Girlfriend & Dating History - Elsina Khayrova

In December 2023, Us Weekly confirmed that Cruise had been quietly dating Russian socialite Elsina Khayrova. The relationship had reportedly been going on “for a while” before they made their public debut at a party in London.

At the time, an insider shared with the magazine, “They’re very happy. And Tom’s extremely confident about it working out for the long term.” The couple apparently met through mutual friends in England, with the source explaining, “What started as a basic friendship quickly turned into something more special.”

As of 2024, however, it seems the relationship had run its course. “They weren’t gelling and realized they weren’t romantically compatible,” a source later told Us Weekly. According to the insider, Khayrova was the one to call things off. “There’s no bad blood between them,” the source added. “They just had different ideas of what their relationship was going to be.”

saga cruises postal address

This was my second cruise on Spirit of Adventure and again it was a memorable holiday. I booked the same cabin as before as this way I was familiar with my surroundings. On my cruise last year to Iceland I made friends with a lady also travelling solo and we decided to meet up again on this cruise to Norway. The door to door chauffeur service was a good start to the holiday. Insurance was ... Read More

We are first time Saga guests. The ship and attention to detail is first class. Nothing is too much trouble. Quality of food a drink is what you would expect from this price bracket. Our cabin was even more spacious than Cunards , and Patrick ,our cabin attendant was wonderful. The only downside was, for us, The Dinning Room. We found this area very claustrophobic, noisy and very hit and miss ... Read More

Review for a Arctic Cruise on Spirit Of Discovery

Iceland is a great place to cruise, a beautiful country with fantastic waterfalls, wildlife, geysers and geology, and Saga Spirit of Discovery is top quality with outstanding food and staff. The three additional restaurants were all very good, but ‘the club’ was rather limited in its choice. The excursions were well thought out and there was something to interest most people. Shuttles were laid ... Read More

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Spirit Of Discovery

This was our first cruise with SAGA. We had always considered them to be expensive but costing against other cruises with add-ons, such as home to port transfer, drinks package, gratuities, the cost difference was eroded. However, we don't consider this cruise to have been value for money when comparing to competitors. The transport to the port was excellent. The ship was comfortable with ... Read More

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Spirit of Adventure

We chose this Saga cruise itinerary to experience the varied destination ports around the UK. From start to finish we enjoyed the absolutely superb service and completely professional standards that Saga offer. The journey from home to port in a chauffeured vehicle made the trip seamless and was a wonderful relaxing start to the cruise. The Spirit of Adventure is a beautifully decorated and ... Read More

Review for a Baltic Sea Cruise on Spirit of Adventure

saga cruises postal address

We are almost cruise newbies except for an awful experience decades ago. Husband never cruised before. We splurged on a suite (eye wateringly expensive). Turned out 80% of the passengers were also newbies. We are very independent frequent travellers all over the world and I thought we might hate having our hands held and (literally) ferried around. News flash: we loved it. Picked up at our front ... Read More

Review for a Europe - Western Mediterranean Cruise on Spirit Of Discovery

Had a suite and very good it was too. Butler service was of an excellent standard. Lovely to have champagne waiting in the cabin on arrival. Canapés served at 16.30 each day. Laundry taken care of so a big bonus. Double sinks and a big deep bath and shower. Great to have the lounge for extra space and a double balcony. All our speciality restaurants were booked for us right until ... Read More

Our cruise started with an immaculately dressed, very friendly & attentive chauffeur collecting us from home exactly on time. We did not have to touch our luggage. The chauffeur handled it all. We had two stops en route and he even bought a newspaper and a coffee for us at the services. Embarkation was seamless. Our luggage was transferred to our cabin before we even got there. The cabin was very ... Read More

Review for a Europe - Western Mediterranean Cruise on Spirit of Adventure

saga cruises postal address

Although our cruise choices are by no means exclusively with Saga, we chose this cruise as we have enjoyed several cruises with them in the past and this one particularly suited us having recently had a few health issues to cope with. We're never quite convinced that Saga's all-inclusive offering is the value for money they claim it to be but the fact that (nearly) everything is paid for in ... Read More

Luggage tags

First Saga cruise coming up in a fortnight. I have had a pre-embarkation letter, but no luggage labels. Do these come separately? If they do, I’d be a bit concerned about getting them in time because of postal strikes/delays. Maybe they are emailed?  But I assume that, if necessary, you can get tags on arrival at Southampton.

They usually come with the pre-embarkation letter. Give Saga a ring on the after sales number & get them to post out to you/E-Mail.

I'm guessing I will have to get my luggage tags and pre-embarkation letter by email since I am coming from the US. Maybe they'll be waiting for me when I return from my cruise about 3 weeks later.

Saga also have Representative with Luggage Labels/ deal with any issues etc available prior to Check In.

Thank you. I’ll try to make contact later today. I do find it curious that the pre-embarkation letter does not even mention luggage tags.

You can get them in port if needs be
