‘Something had to give’: Rory McIlroy opens up about why he resigned from the PGA Tour Policy Board

1796669435

Ross Kinnaird

DUBAI — It would have been too much to ask for. So it was that, instead of an air of resignation at the end of his opening-round 71 in the DP World Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy was exuding relief after two fairly outrageous pieces of good fortune on the 651-yard closing hole allowed him to escape with an unlikely par 5.

No matter, as so often is the case of late where the World No. 2 is concerned, it was McIlroy’s off-course activities and not a score that sees him four shots off the pace that attracted so many journalists to his post-round huddle just outside the recorder’s office. Specifically, what had been the thinking behind his abrupt Tuesday resignation from the PGA Tour Policy Board ?

Perhaps predictably, McIlroy said it was mostly a time-management issue.

“Something had to give,” McIlroy said. “There are only so many hours in a day and only so many days in a week. I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now between trying to be a world-class golfer and trying to be a good husband and a good father. I’ve got a growing investment portfolio that is taking up more of my time. I’m involved with TGL and sort of in the weeds with that. On top of all that, the Policy Board stuff was taking more of my time than ever this year. I just felt something had to give.”

Indeed, few could argue that McIlroy, in what are likely to be the peak years of his already storied career, gave plenty to the PGA Tour cause since joining the board in 2021. With some justification, he is clearly proud of the contribution he has made.

“I stepped up and spoke out about something I believed in,” he said. “The landscape changed on June 6 with the announcement [of a framework agreement between the PGA Tour, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and the DP World Tour]. It was never in my control, but from then on I was playing a lesser part because of the decisions that were made. There has been a lot of time spent on this over the last few weeks with different investment groups and meeting different people who are interested. It just got to the point where, although I like being busy, I like being busy on my own things. And it got to the point where I just couldn’t fit it all in.”

Support for McIlroy’s decision wasn’t hard to find. His fellow Irishman, former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, is one who understands the motivation to un-clutter a busy life.

“Resigning has to be a good thing for Rory,” McGinley said. “We’re in the middle of a complex situation that will necessitate a huge amount of input in the coming months. A lot of energy, too. At the height of his career and time when he is playing his best golf, that isn’t something Rory needs. Having said that, the contribution he has made over the last couple of years doesn’t seem to have affected his performance level. In fact, he has been energized by it all.

“I’m not surprised by what Rory has done, or the timing of it,” McGinley continued. “When he went on the board or when he was chairman of the PAC, the landscape of golf was very different. But he walked into the eye of a storm. All of sudden he was right in the middle of it. So he was thrust into a position he didn’t choose or probably could have imagined. And, as much as the last two years have been difficult, the next three-to-six months are going to be much more so. It makes sense for him to let someone else take the lead.”

rory mcilroy pga tour wikipedia

McIlroy’s close friend, former Open champion Shane Lowry, was another to speak out in support of the Northern Irishman’s decision to focus his considerable energies elsewhere.

“I think Rory is right to do what he has done,” Lowry said. “Not that everything has gone his way the last couple of years, but I spent a lot of time with him and saw what he was having to do. Board meetings. Calls from other players on his weeks off. Players wanting to talk to him when he walks onto a range. I don’t understand why anyone would want to do that job, to be honest.

“I went on the PAC this year and it’s just not worth it,” Lowry went on. “Rory has done a great job, and we were very lucky to have him on our side. He spoke up a lot for us. I’ve often said it to him over the last couple of months, ‘Rory, why bother?’ He’s got every material thing he is ever going to need. All he wants is to win more majors. So that’s all he should focus on.”

Still, although almost a decade has passed since his most recent victory in any of golf’s four most important events, McIlroy was keen to say his involvement in high-level golf politics had not been a factor in his frustrating inability to win a fifth grand Slam title.

“I don’t think my play was affected,” he maintained. “I’ve played really well. I like being busy. I like having things to do away from the golf course. But it just got to the point where it was too much. I enjoyed it. It was an education. I was in the room with some very smart people. I was appreciative of the opportunity. Hopefully that will stand me in good stead with whatever I decide to do in the future.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Rory McIlroy will not return to the PGA Tour's policy board as expected because of other player directors' concerns about bringing him back, McIlroy said Wednesday.

McIlroy, who resigned from the policy board on Nov. 14, was expected to replace Webb Simpson on the PGA Tour policy board and the board of directors of PGA Tour Enterprises.

"There's been a lot of conversations," McIlroy said ahead of this week's Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club. "Sort of reminded me partly why I didn't [stay on the board]. So yeah, I think it got pretty complicated and pretty messy.

"I think with the way it happened, I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before. I think there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason."

Simpson, 38, will finish out his term, which expires in 2025. Simpson said he had planned to step down from both boards to spend time with his family.

"I think the best course of action is if, you know, there's some people on there that aren't comfortable with me coming back on, then I think Webb just stays on and sees out his term," McIlroy said. "I think he's gotten to a place where he's comfortable with doing that, and I just sort of keep doing what I'm doing."

Along with Simpson, the other player directors on the tour's policy board are Patrick Cantlay , Peter Malnati , Adam Scott , Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods . Former tour member Joe Ogilvie is a board liaison.

McIlroy, the No. 2 golfer in the world, had joined the policy board in 2022 and was expected to serve through 2024. The 35-year-old cited personal and professional commitments in making his decision to leave the board late last year.

McIlroy's surprising reversal comes at a time when the PGA Tour is attempting to negotiate a final agreement with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which finances the rival LIV Golf League. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and policy board player directors met with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas on March 18.

McIlroy has previously met with Al-Rumayyan to discuss the future of men's professional golf. McIlroy said Al-Rumayyan wanted to do the "right thing" with PIF's investment in golf.

He said some PGA Tour members have voiced concerns about potentially playing a global schedule outside the U.S. and whether to allow golfers who left for LIV Golf to come back to the tour.

With Simpson staying on the policy board, McIlroy said he is "still optimistic" that a deal with the PIF can get done.

"I think Webb staying on is a really good thing," McIlroy said. "I think he's got a really balanced voice in all of this, and I think he sees the bigger picture, which is great. My fear was if Webb stepped off and it wasn't me that was going in his place, what could potentially happen? Yeah, I'm really happy that Webb has made that decision to stay on and serve out the rest of his term."

McIlroy, who grew up in Northern Ireland, said both sides will have to compromise in good faith to get a deal done. He is frustrated that a deal hasn't been finalized because "we've got this window of opportunity to get it done."

While discussing what would have to happen to bring the fractured sport together, McIlroy invoked the Good Friday Agreement of April 10, 1998, which ended political unrest in Ireland and Northern Ireland that had occurred since the 1960s.

"Catholics weren't happy, Protestants weren't happy, but it brought peace, and then you just sort of learn to live with whatever has been negotiated, right?" McIlroy said. "That was in 1998 or whatever it was, and 20, 25, 30 years ahead, my generation doesn't know any different. It's just this is what it's always been like, and we've never known anything but peace.

"That's sort of my little, I guess, way of trying to think about it and trying to make both sides see that there could be a compromise here. Yeah, it's probably not going to feel great for either side, but if it's a place where the game of golf starts to thrive again and we can all get back together, then I think that's ultimately a really good thing."

Winner’s Circle: Rory McIlroy Claims 26th Tour Victory at the Wells Fargo

Rory McIlroy wins 2024 Wells Fargo Championship Quail Hollow

The final hole was ugly, but in the end, Rory McIlroy signed for a Sunday round of 65 to claim a five-shot victory at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

The 35-year-old Northern Irishman highlighted his final day at Quail Hollow with five birdies and a pair of eagles on the par 5s coming home. A meaningless double bogey on 18 saw McIlroy post 65 to reach 17-under 267, five clear of Xander Schauffele (71).

For his second win of the 2024 season, McIlroy earned $3,600,000 and 700 FedEx Cup points. He will move to No. 5 on the PGA Tour’s money list and fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. He also picked up 60 Official World Golf Ranking points to remain locked in at No. 2.

Q . Rory, congratulations on your fourth win at the Wells Fargo Championship and your 26th on the PGA Tour. If we could just get an opening comment on what this one means to you.

RORY McILROY : Yeah, I don’t know what’s more unbelievable, winning a PGA Tour event for the fourth time or getting my 26th. Whenever I sort of hit some of these milestones or do these things, I always think back to, for example, like 20-year-old me playing in this tournament for the first time. If I had known back then that this is the way everything was going to pan out, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

Yeah, anytime things like this happen I feel incredibly lucky and grateful that I have the opportunity to do what I do. I was able to play good enough golf today to take advantage of that opportunity.

Rory McIlroy not returning to PGA Tour board after ‘old wounds’ reopened

  • Decision set to cause consternation with sponsors and partners
  • ‘It got pretty complicated and pretty messy,’ declared golfer

The internal politics of the PGA Tour have been placed into sharp focus after Rory McIlroy was astonishingly prevented from returning to a position of power within the organisation. The inability of McIlroy to take places on the PGA Tour policy board and as a director of PGA Tour Enterprises is certain to cause consternation among sponsors and partners, including the European Tour Group.

Webb Simpson planned to resign from both boards, with the former US Open champion offering specific instruction that he wanted McIlroy to take on the positions. The 35-year-old, who has been frustrated at the time being taken to unify golf, was happy to step forward.

This, however, triggered ructions on the all-powerful PGA Tour policy board. Members include Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth and there is no European representation. McIlroy has clashed previously with Cantlay and Spieth over golf’s future. After delay upon delay at holding a vote over McIlroy’s return – he resigned from the policy board last November, citing time constraints – Simpson will remain in place.

“It got pretty complicated and pretty messy,” said McIlroy. “I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before. There was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason. I think the best course of action is, if there’s some people on there that aren’t comfortable with me coming back on, then I think Webb just stays on and sees out his term. I think he’s gotten to a place where he’s comfortable with doing that and I just sort of keep doing what I’m doing.

“I put my hand up to help and it was ... I wouldn’t say it was rejected, it was a complicated process to get through to put me back on there. So that’s all fine, no hard feelings and we’ll all move on.

“My fear was if Webb stepped off and it wasn’t me that was going in his place, what could potentially happen. I’m really happy that Webb has made that decision to stay on and serve out the rest of his term.”

Rory McIlroy with Webb Simpson after winning the 2019 Canadian Open

Those familiar with the situation have told the Guardian that lesser and alternative posts were floated for McIlroy, which he was unwilling to accept. When speaking in public, it is likely policy board members will cite governance concerns relating to Simpson effectively giving his directorships to McIlroy. However, such a point would be undermined by the processes during which Woods and Spieth were placed on the board.

after newsletter promotion

McIlroy has been adamant golf requires a global schedule, as a means for traditional tours to work in tandem with the Saudi Arabian-funded LIV circuit. “I’m impatient because I think we’ve got this window of opportunity to get it done,” added the world No 2. “I sort of liken it to like when Northern Ireland went through the peace process in the ’90s and the Good Friday agreement. Neither side was happy. Catholics weren’t happy, Protestants weren’t happy, but it brought peace and then you just sort of learn to live with whatever has been negotiated, right? That was in 1998 and 25 years ahead, my generation doesn’t know any different.”

Rory McIlroy debuts new woods, putter in season-opener

Change Text Size

Last year, Rory McIlroy accomplished something he’d never done before in his decorated career. His victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic marked the first time he won his first event of a calendar year.

A year later, McIlroy is off to a good start to his 2024 debut. He shot 9-under 62 to lead after the first round of the Dubai Invitational, which comes a week before his title defense at the Desert Classic. Like many players, McIlroy is starting the new year with new clubs in the bag. He changed both the shortest and longest clubs in his bag before starting the new season. Below are more details on the changes.

McIlroy began using TaylorMade’s new Qi10 line at the end of last year, debuting the new driver at the DP World Tour Championship, where he won his fifth Race to Dubai title. This week, McIlroy switched from the Qi10’s LS (which stands for low spin) model to a 10-degree Qi10 with a hosel set one click lower. He also is debuting two Qi10 fairway woods this week, a 15-degree 3-wood and 18-degree 5-wood.

The Qi10’s bigger and more forgiving head allowed him to switch back into Fujikura Ventus Black shafts, and he was able to add some length back into his driver shaft (which is now 45 inches long). According to TaylorMade, he switched into the new fairway woods because of the optimal spin numbers they produced and because of the larger, more forgiving heads.

McIlroy also is debuting a Spider Tour X putter this week. TaylorMade released the latest edition of its popular Spider line last fall, and McIlroy first saw the club at the BMW Championship. He did in-depth testing with the club after his final tournament of 2023, the DP World Tour Championship. The putter is similar to his previous Spider gamer, but it is one piece with an aluminum sole plate and TSS weights in the sole instead of having weights in the wings like his previous model. He also liked the darker finish of the club, TaylorMade said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce after seven years of marriage, according to court records in Palm Beach County, Florida, a stunning development going into the PGA Championship .

McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, had a storybook meeting during the Ryder Cup in 2012, began dating two years later and were married in 2017 . They have one daughter, Poppy, born in September 2020.

TMZ first reported on the filing, which was made Monday.

The petition for divorce described the marriage as irretrievably broken and asked that a prenuptial agreement signed about a month before their April 21, 2017, wedding be validated and enforced. The prenuptial agreement was sealed.

McIlroy’s attorney was listed as Thomas Sasser, the same attorney who represented Tiger Woods when his wife divorced him in 2010.

“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed. They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible,” said a statement from his manager, Sean O’Flaherty.

He said there would be no further comment.

McIlroy arrived at Valhalla on Tuesday. He has gone 10 years since winning a major, the last one at Valhalla in 2014 for the PGA Championship. His pre-tournament news conference was scheduled for Wednesday.

McIlroy and Stoll met under unusual circumstances. She worked for the PGA of America in 2012 during the Ryder Cup at Medinah in the Chicago suburbs, where McIlroy nearly missed his Sunday singles match because he said he forgot he was in the Central time zone.

Stoll arranged for a police escort to Medinah, and McIlroy barely arrived in time. He won his match over Keegan Bradley as Europe rallied to win.

McIlroy was dating tennis star Caroline Wozniacki at the time. They were engaged just over a year later, but then McIlroy abruptly broke it off over the phone.

He and Stoll began dating later that year. They were engaged in 2015.

McIlroy filed for the divorce a day after he won the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, his second straight PGA Tour win and the 26th of his career. Asked if he planned to go straight to Valhalla on Sunday night, McIlroy said, “I’ll probably go home and just sort of reset, then head up to Louisville tomorrow night or Tuesday morning.”

The divorce filing comes amid chaos in golf created by the launch of Saudi-funded LIV Golf. McIlroy has been a central figure over the last two years, harshly criticizing LIV and then changing his views and pushing for some form of reunification.

He resigned from the PGA Tour board last November, then was involved in a plan to rejoin the board by replacing Webb Simpson. That move was met by resistance from other player directors. Instead, McIlroy was appointed to a committee that is negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia over potentially becoming a minority investor.

Associated Press Writer Terry Spencer in Palm Beach, Florida, contributed to this report.

Rory mcilroy happier with score than game after opening 66 at pga championship.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A familiar scene has broken out at the PGA Championship: Rory McIlroy trying to chase down Xander Schauffele.

After Schauffele’s course-record 9-under 62 to start at Valhalla, McIlroy caught fire late in his round Thursday to cut into the deficit and keep alive his hopes of capturing his first major championship in a decade.

On Nos. 5-7 – his 14 th , 15 th and 16 th holes of the day – McIlroy stuffed a wedge, chipped in and perfectly nipped a pitch shot to collect three straight birdies on his way to a 5-under 66.

2024 PGA Championship - Round One

It was a sizzling end to what had been an otherwise scrappy round, with McIlroy hitting just 10 greens and ranking 135 th off the tee. One of the lowlights came on 18, his ninth of the day, when he flared his tee shot into the water on the reachable par 5 and needed to scramble just to save par. He bounced back on the next hole with an approach that kissed off the flagstick and led to a birdie.

“I don’t really feel like I left many out there; I thought I got a lot out of my game today,” McIlroy said afterward. “Not really happy with how I played, but at least happy with the score.”

Inside the top 5 when he finished his day, McIlroy was once again staring up at the leaderboard at Schauffele, who sprinted out to another first-round lead. Last week, at the Wells Fargo Championship, Schauffele opened with 64 and had a four-shot lead at the halfway point, before McIlroy eventually caught him on the weekend for his fourth win at Quail Hollow.

It could take a similar effort again at Valhalla, especially with wet weather expected to move into the area over the next two days that could make a long, soft course even more scoreable.
