False advertising & awful customer claim experience

Booked insurance before the pandemic which clearly stated on their website that they covered everything including outbreaks of diseases. This was a massive selling point and the only insurer that clearly pointed this out on their website (in hidden small print). However, when the pandemic struck they decided to change their wording on the website (luckily i had screenshot it). I decided to email their customer service team with which they confirmed i was covered. Only a few days later an advisor out of the blue emailed me and decided I wasn’t covered?! Regardless of this, i had to make a claim due to medical issues with a member of my party. Postcard tried everything in their power to block the claim, making excuses that an agent who was dealing with my claim was on holiday? This delayed it about 2 1/2 months. There was a constant back and forth game of tennis from the doctors to postcard. This is because their claim form is extremely misleading and doesn’t ask direct questions. Overall a waste of mine and the doctors precious time. Would i use the company again? Absolutely not!

Zero trust in this company

My honest experience, at first this postcard travel insurance seemed very good. However the issue came when I had to claim due to My flights been cancelled due to Covid-19. I had taken this insurance for that purpose, as at the time of taking it out I was stil able to travel to my destination (Japan) with no real risk. My main concern was maybe catching Covid 19 while in Japan I spoke to the advisor who sold me this insurance and he assured me I was covered against flight cancellations due to Covid 19 and also if I contracted Covid 19 while abroad we spoke about this in-depth as this was my main worry. I took this insurance on 12/03/20, then on the 17/03/20 the FOC advised against all non essential travel, however my flights where still going ahead. On the 29/03/20 my flights were cancelled unexpectedly and I tried to make a claim. When I received a response from Postcard Travel Insurance I was confused, they stated that they will not cover me as this was not an unexpected event. This was not the case as I had taken the insurance on the basis I was covered for such a situation. I have taken this further as I explicitly asked if I would be covered before taking this cover out and I am waiting for an investigation to take place. Personally would never recommend this company. when it comes to crunch they try to work their way out of paying valid claims. Very disappointed dread to think what would happen if I did need them had I been abroad.

If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

How We Reviewed the Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler. Determine the benefits that are most important to you, like baggage delay coverage, medical coverage, and trip delay coverage, then look for a company with solid customer ratings, especially when it comes to processing claims.

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip due to work reasons, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it. You should also check customer reviews to see other travelers' claims experiences, as it varies wildly from company to company.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include travel medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with pre-existing conditions , so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

How single trip travel insurance works

How to choose between travel insurance companies, best plans for single trip travel insurance, other tips for travel insurance for a single trip, travel cards that come with complimentary travel insurance, single travel insurance for a trip recapped.

There are many types of travel insurance, including plans that’ll reimburse you for emergency medical expenses or unexpected travel delays. Along with coverage types, there are also different durations of travel insurance.

Single trip travel insurance will cover you during one vacation, while multitrip or annual travel insurance can last for multiple outings. Let’s take a look at single trip travel insurance, what kind of coverage you can expect and how to choose a plan that works for you.

Purchasing a travel insurance plan is fairly simple, as is making a claim. It generally goes like this:

You gather a few quotes from travel insurance companies.

You pick a plan that suits your needs and customize it to your liking.

You purchase your plan and include a date for it to start.

You go on your trip.

If something happens (such as a flight delay), keep the proof.

You make a claim with your travel insurance company.

The travel insurance company reimburses you.

There are a few variations in how this can work (for instance, some travel insurance plans can pay a medical provider directly), but for the most part, this is how the process will go. This is the case whether you have one-trip travel insurance or multitrip travel insurance.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

There are several travel insurance companies out there, which can make choosing a plan difficult.

NerdWallet analysis found that some travel insurance providers rise above the rest in terms of breadth and depth of coverage, cost, customizability, and overall customer satisfaction. Jump to see our findings on the bets plans for single trip travel insurance.

However, before choosing a company and purchasing a plan, consider these questions:

How much am I willing to pay?

Do I want trip protection, emergency medical coverage or both?

Do I already have coverage somewhere?

How much customizability does my plan need?

Do I need coverage for preexisting conditions?

Will I be doing any sort of adventure activities?

Once you’ve answered these questions, do your due diligence and get quotes from multiple sources. Different providers will offer differing levels of coverage at varying prices, so it’s in your best interest to generate as many quotes as possible and read the fine print.

To make it simple, travel insurance aggregators such as Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) will provide you with multiple quotes at a time.

If you’re interested in getting travel insurance, do yourself a favor and consider these tips before making any purchases:

Consult your medical insurance provider to see whether it offers coverage out of country .

Consider an annual plan to save money if you make multiple trips per year.

Check your credit card for complimentary travel insurance . Many offer this benefit, and if its limits are satisfactory, you can book your travels with it and avoid buying a separate policy out-of-pocket altogether. More on this in the next section.

If you're looking to get coverage for a one-off trip, among your best options is to simply pay for your travel with a card that includes travel insurance as a benefit.

Most travel cards will include coverage for things like trip interruption , trip delays and lost luggage .

Poor service; poor ethics

I bought travel insurance from Postcard in early March 2020. I checked with them beforehand that I would be covered in the event of cancellation due to Government travel restrictions and they confirmed that I would be. Unfortunately a few weeks later my holiday was cancelled due to Covid restrictions and I was forced to claim on the insurance as the company I had booked my holiday with went bankrupt. Postcard refused to pay out - claiming that Covid was a known event at the time I took out the policy. This was despite they fact they had said I was covered and despite the fact I took out the policy before Covid was declared a pandemic. I complained further but that claim was rejected by their internal complaints team who had the audacity to tell me that their own staff had made a mistake in saying that I would be covered and offered me a paulty £100 as compensation. I took them to the financial ombudsman and finally - 520 days after making my claim - they were obliged to pay out as the ombudsman found in my favour. Overall a truly appalling service from Postcard who basically tried every trick in the book to avoid paying out a legitimate claim. Needless to say I will not be using them again.

Could you please email me at [email protected] with your full name, DOB, postcode and policy reference number in order for me to do so. Many thanks, Edie

Unique policy that takes worry away!

Unique policy that pays out the full cost of your holiday if you cant go! With lunatics like President Trump about who knows what will happen in this world! Cover is excellent with no excess, sports equipment cover of £3000, friendly people on phone, all seems very good!

Good medical and travel cover

Didn't have to claim so no experience on that. Choose this due to the "cancel for any reason" cover. Seemed to offer good coverage - but unclear after I purchased (mid Feb) how they would cover claims for cancelling due to COVID outbreak. However, when I called and spoke to them they were helpful and clear on the process that would be followed in the case of any claim. Would use them again given the extent of medical and travel cover they offer.

Used them last year and chose them this…

Used them last year and chose them this year as the language on the website seemed jargon free and last experience was hassle free. However, last time I did not had to contact them, this time round, I have been trying to contact them for almost a month, I have even tried the responses@tifgroup email address with my contact details such as name, policy number etc., but still no response.

First class

First class, during the outbreak of corona our life’s are put on hold and things change. I’m happy as my travel arrangements during this time we’re cancelled and postcard were very helpful and offered to change my travel insurance to cover my holiday for the future booking.

Happy Birthday 'boy'

As a brand new 76 yo, with several medical conditions for my (78yo) wife and I, getting travel insurance wasn't expected to be such a pleasure. Amanda had the patience of a saint and effortlessly took me through the extensive process and fitted us with an excellent 'Classic' worldwide annual policy at an excellent price - and no excess (not that we have ever claimed on Holiday/Travel Ins. Job done - can't wait to tell my friends and family.

Excellent insurance cover

Excellent insurance cover. Used for family holiday and water damaged my phone by accident. Has been dealt with and is being fixed/replaced. Will be using again for future trips and feel confident that they will help and cover me and my family if the needed.

The company is using misleading…

The company is using misleading information on its website to sell products. They state that customers can cancel their travel due to issues beyond their control. In practice, this never happens. I made a claim for cancelation of my travel due to COVID-19, however they refused my claim, based on unclear reasons. My travel was booked long before this event becomes as 'known event', but they do everything to decline claims, and provide misleading information.

Where’s my quote

I ask for a quote awhile ago and didn’t receive any emails with a quote number. Instead I get one asking me to review your lackadaisical company, so you should feel lucky you’re getting two stars instead of one. A little speeder with the replays would make a huge difference.

my experience, anything to avoid paying what they owe

A close personal friend died shortly before our trip, we cancelled to help in any way we could and quite frankly didn't feel like going on holiday with that news Postcard are demanding that i provide them with my friends GP records before they allow me to claim. It is impossible for anyone to get someone elses GP records, as they are fully aware. An unrelated person can not get someone elses GP records. it's impossible and they know it They make an impossible demand in what i believe is a deliberate attempt to stop us getting our insurance money. It's cancel for any reason insurance, if i said my goldfish died it should be valid, then again they would probably ask for a signed death notice from Aquaman. I currently feel that this is a complete and utter scam & should be shut down. TRUST THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK I will be taking this to court on principle if i have to!!

Date of experience : 24 June 2020

Hi Gareth, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. My name is Sarah and I am one of the team here at Postcard. First and foremost, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss and can only apologise for your experience with us so far. Please can you email me your claims reference number, date of birth and postcode to [email protected] so that I can look into your case for you? Kind regards, Sarah

Avoid at all costs

We had a trip cancelled by our airline due to Covid-19. We are getting a refund directly from the airline for the flights but this company are refusing to pay out for the accommodation. It has been a long drawn out process which has resulted in undue stress and an unsuccessful result from their complaints department. We are now passing this to the financial ombudsman. In my experience I would avoid this company at all costs. Their ‘cancel for any reason any time’ selling point is misleading, they will avoid paying out no matter which way you turn or what your personal circumstances are.

Very happy with my holiday insurance so…

Very happy with my holiday insurance so far. Only a claim really finds out how good any given insurance policy is, but this one is recommended by Which? so I have confidence in it. Hope I never get to the point of having to seriously test it.

Date of experience : 22 November 2019

No claims - so I really don't know how good they are.

Easy to purchase. Not the cheapest - but provide some more cover than other (according to the contract). Didn't have to claim - so difficult to say if the insurance is any good. As consequence a "neutral" rating.

Hi Olivier, Thanks for taking the time to leave a review, my name is Edie and I'm part of the team at Postcard. Thank you for choosing us for your insurance needs. If you need any further assistance, please email [email protected]. Many thanks, Edie

Insurance peace of mind

Hopefully I won't have to use the insurance that I took out, but I'm sure that if I do everything will be OK. It was easy and quick to organise, the reply from customer services was virtually instant. Good cover for the price, no hesitation in recommending them.

Date of experience : 15 November 2018

I still worry about the medical cover!

I've read everything tif group say about their insistence on the use of public hospitals. I still find this worrying. Much of what is said applies to Spain and I'm sure there is a problem there. Nevertheless, in much of the world (even some countries in Europe) public hospitals depend upon the patient's family to provide basic services - food, drinks, laundry etc. Because there is no way of predicting the position tif's medical advisors will take in any particular set of circumstances, you only find out whether you in fact have useful cover when the worst happens and that's really too late! Of course, an appeal to the Ombudsman will probably succeed in the end and if you've behaved reasonably - but who wants to go through all that!! I guess I'll just go on worrying because, as far as I can see, all travel insurers behave equally poorly and the tif group's personnel are always very friendly.

Highly recommend Postcard to Everyone

Highly recommend Postcard to everyone! Being able to make sure I am covered for the total amount of my holiday was real piece of mind. The customer service adviser I spoke to was really polite and explained everything clearly.
