‘Disgusting hovel’ holiday park named worst in the UK for 11th year running

Little kid without friends

Forget foreign holidays to sunnier climes , sometimes a UK holiday park is all you need for a cheerful family break.

Resorts across the country offer outdoor activities, entertainment and waterparks, which offer wholesome fun for a variety of different budgets.

And now, a new list by consumer giant Which? has ranked holiday parks , asking visitors to judge their stays on a variety of factors, including value for money, cleanliness, food and drink, and quality of activities/facilities.

And it’s bad news for one famous name – who were ranked bottom, for the 11th year in a row.

Pontins, founded in 1946, has just two remaining sites in Suffolk and Somerset, and guests weren’t exactly thrilled by what they had to offer.

One reviewer , who travelled to the Somerset park in June called the place ‘soul destroying’ and said: ‘Terrible accommodation, staff couldn’t care less, poor food, lack of facilities, really run down… would never go back even if you paid me!’

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Meddle/REX/Shutterstock (1009759q) Pontins Pakefield, Pakefield, Suffolk, England, Britain. Various - Aug 2009

A visitor to the Suffolk site called her stay a ‘holiday to forget’.

Another guest said the resort was rundown: ‘Every inch of the so called holiday park is in need of updating or knocking down, everything is old and tired.’

Meanwhile reviews for the recently closed Prestatyn Sands Pontins were just as scathing.

Best and worst UK holiday parks and resorts

  • Forest Holidays
  • Bluestone Wales
  • John Fowler Holiday Parks
  • Hoburne Holidays
  • Waterside Holiday Group
  • Warner Leisure Villages
  • Centre Parcs

‘Disgusting hovel’ began one TripAdvisor reviewer. ‘There are no words to describe how awful this place is. A prison cell would be preferable to the chalet.’

Meanwhile another review said: ‘I’d never return here if it was last place on earth.’

Which? reviewers said that, while the place is cheap at just £38 per person, per night, it only got two stars for value for money. It fell down on its accommodation, cleanliness and the quality of food and drink. Overall, Which? gave the verdict that Pontins was ‘cheap but not cheerful.’

It’s not all bad news though.

At the top end of the scale, the lesser known Potters Resorts beat out the likes of stalwarts like Center Parcs and Butlins to claim first place.

Which? dubbed Potters – which has sites in Essex and Norfolk – as an ‘upscale affair with absolutely everything included.’

Potters Resorts https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=618081610359336&set=a.562485859252245

For £110 per person, per night, guests can stay in bungalows, hotel rooms or suites and activities and West End inspired entertainment come included. The resorts are also all-inclusive, meaning your holiday cocktails are part of the package too.

Activities include rowing on the boating lake, air rifle shooting, archery and workouts in the dance studio.

Elsewhere on the ranking, holiday parks including Forest Holidays and Bluestone Wales placed second and third.

The most popular holiday park was Center Parcs, placing 9th in the ranking.

Visitors loved the wide range of activities across its five UK parks, including zip lines, watersports, cycling, and an abundance of fitness classes. Children are well catered for, and on a rainy day, you can head to the spa or indoor swimming pool for those all-important rapids.

The waterside lodges by the lake at Center Parcs in the United Kingdom.

However, Center Parcs fell down on value for money. Survey respondents reported spending an average of £79pppn on accommodation, making it the most expensive option not to include food or drinks in the price. There is also a lack of free facilities on offer – with only the pool coming as part of the package.

Finally, Butlin’s placed number 12 in the ranking, and costs £47 per person, per night. It scored most highly on its quality of entertainment and the wide variety of facilities and activities for children.

'A Gentleman in Moscow' Review — Ewan McGregor Effortlessly Charms From a Gilded Cage

  • Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead's chemistry shines in A Gentleman in Moscow as Alexander navigates relationships in his gilded cage.
  • The storytelling cleverly deploys nonlinear narrative and amusing dialogue to engage the viewer.
  • A slow start evolves into a compelling historical epic within the Metropol's walls.

Based on Amor Towles ’ critically acclaimed novel by the same name, A Gentleman in Moscow is Showtime’s next great historical drama. While the mention of “Moscow” in the title might make the mind’s eye wander down snowy streets in the shadow of Saint Basil's Cathedral, A Gentleman in Moscow is far removed from the sprawl of a struggling society and is instead a far more quaint tale , set within the confines of a grandiose hotel-turned-prison cell.

Like the gilt Fabergé egg that adorns the poster for the series, Count Alexander Rostov’s ( Ewan McGregor ) existence is a reminder of the opulence of bygone days—an ostentatious relic. He serves no real purpose in the grand scheme of things, except to be watched within his gilded cage, and kept account of by authorities, much like the dwindling few eggs that sit in collections around the world. And much like the Fabergé egg, Alexander’s life is inextricably linked to the tragic downfall of the Romanov family and the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 that followed.

The series starts swiftly, with the Bolshevik tribunal sentencing the Count to a lifetime of confinement within the walls of the Metropol Hotel. He is spared a far worse sentencing ( death ) due to the poem that he allegedly penned, which critiqued the upper class and questioned the purpose of the royal family. These are, of course, ideals that the Bolsheviks agree with, even if they are being echoed by a Count who benefited from the institutions he criticized. As with Towles’ novel, much of the Count’s life before the revolution is shown through fragmented flashbacks dotted throughout the series, as well as through illuminating conversations with his compatriots — or, rather, comrades, Mishka ( Fehinti Balogun ) and Prince Nikolai Petrov ( Paul Ready ).

A Gentleman in Moscow

A Russian aristocrat is spared from death and placed on house arrest while the Bolshevik Revolution plays out before him.

‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ Breathes New Life Into Its Characters

With Ben Vanstone as the guiding hand for the series, A Gentleman in Moscow was smartly adapted from page to screen. Rather than embracing the novel's insular storytelling, with the Count as the sole protagonist, Vanstone has widened the narrative to bring more life to the surrounding characters — particularly the women who come in and out of his life, and the gilded doors of the Metropol. It would have been very easy to frame Anna Urbanova ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead ) as little more than the Count’s on-again-off-again girlfriend. Her life outside of Alexander doesn’t matter on the page; she only exists when she is with him or on his mind. Perhaps with a different creative team, that would have been exactly how she was portrayed, but Vanstone veered far away from playing straight into that trope. Instead, Anna’s life outside of Alexander is given depth . Her career as an actress is a vital subplot that weaves through each episode, headed towards a larger plot point. While she and the Count do fall into bed on numerous occasions, it’s always handled tastefully and shown as a relationship that she holds the reins to. Courting a criminal comes at great personal risk to her budding career, which makes the shifted narrative all the more vital.

A Gentleman in Moscow marks the third time that McGregor and Winstead have shared the screen following their performances in Fargo and Birds of Prey , and their real-life chemistry beautifully carries through into the relationship between Alexander and Anna. They play off each other naturally, and their performances are just as electric, regardless of whether Anna is keeping his delusions of grandeur in check or he’s sprawled out naked on the ground with nothing more than a towel to hide the… Fabergé eggs. McGregor and Winstead's dynamic is half the fun of A Gentleman in Moscow . It’s refreshing to have even more historical romances to talk about around the watercooler — and audiences will be raving about this series given its weekly release schedule.

While Alexander’s relationship with Anna is at the heart of A Gentleman in Moscow , the soul of the series is his unlikely friendships with two little girls who call the Metropol home during different periods of his imprisonment. First is Nina Kulikova ( Alexa Goodall ), a curly-haired spitfire who has everyone in the hotel wrapped around her finger. It’s through Nina that Alexander starts to make genuine connections with the host of characters around him, which changes him for the better. Years after Nina has been set free from Alexander’s gilded cage, a second young girl comes into Alexander’s life: Sofia ( Billie Gadsdon ). Through both girls, Alexander gets to experience what fatherhood might have looked like for him had he not been ensnared by the Bolsheviks.

Another notable and equally unlikely friendship that Alexander makes at the Metropol is the one that he forges with Osip Glebnikov ( Johnny Harris ), the man tasked with ensuring he never leaves the hotel. Glebnikov enlists Alexander in training him to be more of a gentleman. Given his upbringing, he was never afforded the same access to scholarly works or classic literature as Alexander, and this academic pursuit becomes their evening conversations over supper.

One such conversation centers on Victor Hugo ’s seminal work, Les Misérables , which is a cause of confusion for Glebnikov, who withers at the notion of Javert (spoilers for a 162-year-old book) committing suicide. While the conversation about Les Misérables may be brief, the comparison between the two works is undeniable. Alexander, much like Jean Valjean, is a prisoner of circumstances, though on wildly different sides of the scale. While Valjean escapes from his jailor, Javert, for large swaths of time, Alexander is always right where Glebnikov left him within the halls of the Metropol. The true comparison, however, arises when Alexander is tasked with the care of young Sofia by her mother, much in the same way Fantine entrusts Cosette’s future with Valjean. Further comparisons could be made with the setting of both tales, as they are both set against uprisings, revolutions, class disparity, and the sort of socialist discourse that would make Karl Marx sit up in his grave. And, much like the stage musical, A Gentleman in Moscow is all about the turning of the years.

‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ Starts Slow, But Builds to a Pulse-Pounding Conclusion

Spread out across eight episodes, A Gentleman in Moscow spans approximately forty years of Alexander’s life in captivity. With each new episode, a running total of how many days he has spent in his lavish prison is tallied up. Occasionally, the episodes will work backward from each shocking total, which cleverly hooks the audience right from the onset of the episode. Except for his visible aging and waning agility, the Count remains largely stagnant as the world changes around him. He has very little control over his circumstances, which means a lot happens to him, not with him. People come and go around him, relationships are formed, babies are born, those babies grow up and go to war, people die, and Russia evolves—for better and for worse.

The first handful of episodes start slowly, particularly where Alexander’s passivity is concerned, but as he begins to come to terms with his situation and connect with the vibrant world around him, however small it may be, the pace finally picks up. Without revealing too many details about the final episodes of the series, one might be able to imagine what sort of turmoil might visit his gilded cage once Stalin’s regime falls and America starts poking around the ruins of the government. The passage of time is cleverly shown through more than just a running total and graying hair. While Alexander’s wardrobe rarely receives an upgrade, the people around him represent the ever-evolving world beyond the Metropol. Anna is the best bellwether for societal changes as her appearance transforms from a picture-perfect blonde bombshell with rising hemlines to her natural brunette curls and sophisticated elegance. As time continues to pass, she even dons cozy sweaters that mirror Alexander’s own comfortable existence.

While it is unlikely that A Gentleman in Moscow intended for Ewan McGregor to look like a dark academia fever dream, every bit of the Count’s character design screams the aesthetic. From the unkempt coif of permed curls to his longjohns-clad calisthenics in a dusty attic, Alexander looks more like an eccentric history professor than a count whose wings have been clipped. McGregor brings a charming congenitally to the role that makes the Count ever so beguiling , particularly when he gets to act opposite the younger members of the cast. When he’s not going toe-to-toe with Winstead, he’s at his best keeping up with the spry wit of Goodall and Gadsdon's characters.

A Gentleman in Moscow lives up to the expectations set by Towles’ novel and delivers a sprawling historical epic contained within the walls of a single location. The Count’s world might be as small as the Metropol, but he lives vicariously through the relationships he makes — and, by extension, so do we. With mystery, danger, and intrigue threaded throughout, A Gentleman in Moscow has the potential to dominate cultural conversation in the same way that Shōgun and The Gilded Age have nourished audiences who are starved for well-told, compelling tales.

A Gentleman in Moscow lives up to the original novel it adapts, delivering a sprawling historical epic confined to a single location.

  • Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead electrify the screen with their chemistry and natural ease together.
  • The writing is clever, both with its amusing dialogue and the way it deploys nonlinear storytelling to keep audiences engaged.
  • The set and costume design are sumptuous and visually appealing.
  • The first handful of episodes are quite slow, but the series does eventually pick up as the story unfolds.

A Gentleman in Moscow premieres March 29 on streaming and on-demand on Paramount+ with Showtime before its on-air debut on March 31.

Summer Moscow Mule Recipe: Wild Raspberry & Watermelon Featuring the Kamojo Moscow Mule Copper Flutes Set

August 19, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Looking for the perfect drink for an end of summer party or festive occasion? There are always the quintessential classics, but it’s fun to customize some drinks with a new, signature twist. Summer is filled with such luscious fruits, the perfect opportunity to change up some of our favorites! One drink that’s especially adaptable is the Moscow Mule. You only need a few key elements for a successful Moscow Mule, and the rest of the ingredients allow for creativity and customization. Our current Moscow Mule obsession? Raspberry Watermelon Moscow Mules! See our recipe below.

The inspiration for this summer drink comes from two things: the wild raspberries are out in full force the garden this time of year, and we want an excuse to use our new pure copper Kamojo Moscow Mule Copper Flutes Set

Serve an end-of-summer Moscow Mule in these Kamojo Copper Champagne Flutes

WHY A PURE COPPER DRINKING VESSEL IS IMPORTANT FOR MOSCOW MULES

While you can serve a Moscow Mule in just about any kind of glass, copper is preferable. I prefer the Kamojo Moscow Mules because the pure copper has a tarnish resistant coating, so they stay beautiful and shiny without having to polish them, making them easy to clean. We previously touted what we love about the classic mug style Kamojo Moscow Mules in a beginning of summer Moscow Mule recipe, Kamojo also makes a copper champagne flute set for a festive, more formal, or celebratory event.

Kamojo Moscow Mule Copper Flute

I also like the pretty hammered pure copper with its’ tarnish-resistant high-shine and the beautiful shape, it adds something to the overall visual appeal of the drink and looks so distinctive!

The beautiful hammered copper pattern

The hammered copper of the Kamojo Champagne Flutes looks beautiful in many festive occasion tablescape color palettes

What’s a good type of drink to serve in a copper champagne flute? As a rule: if it’s bubbly or fizzy – copper kicks that carbonated or bubbly action it up a notch: any seltzer, soda, beer and of course, champagne or prosecco. Also, if it’s a drink best served cold, copper is your best bet.

The reason for this is copper does two things: it quickly makes cold ingredients colder, and bubbly ingredients bubblier. That’s why a copper vessel is a key to a good Moscow Mule, especially for a summertime drink.

Pure copper immediately chills the drink and keeps it cold on contact

Copper also enhances the flavor of some ingredients, enhancing the crisp, citrus and sour notes of go-to ingredients like ginger, lime, and cucumbers.

The pure copper in the Kamojo Moscow Mule Copper Flutes Set enhances the flavors of mint, berries, lime, and ginger and even makes vodka taste better

INGREDIENT CHOICES

A key ingredient to a Moscow Mule is ginger beer. Ginger adds the kick to the mule and is generally obtained from ginger beer or in a pinch, a quality brewed ginger ale. The ginger ale is sweeter, the ginger beer is tarter and for some, might need the addition of simple syrup. I also like to add a thin slice of fresh ginger as part of a garnish or muddled at the bottom of the drinking vessel, or if you prefer your drinks a bit sweeter, a ginger simple syrup can be used.

Copper enhances the taste of fresh ginger and ginger beers and ginger ales

FRUITY INCLUSION OPTIONS

Lime and ginger are the core classics of the mule, and plenty of fruits taste great with both of them.

Copper enhances the lime and berries taste and increases carbonation of ginger beers and ales

Store bought and wild raspberries are abundant and delicious this time of year.

Reed’s brews both a gluten-free ginger beer and ginger ales with real cane sugar and they are pretty good in mules. Their raspberry ginger ale has all the kick and fizzy features of a ginger beer.  Raspberry Ginger Beer or Ale  makes sense in a mule, as so many of the ingredients in a Moscow Mule taste great with raspberries: raspberry and lime, raspberry and mint, raspberry and ginger. But it still needs something to make it more summer, and a bit juicer and sweeter: like watermelon!

Ice cold Ginger Beer or Ale blends well with summer fruits and vodka

Raspberry Ginger Ale or Beer brews taste great in a fruity Moscow Mule when paired with fresh berries, mint, and lime

But lots of fruit combinations work: blackberries, lime, plum or pear and cantaloupe is a delicious alternative option, the cantaloupe and plum sweetly temper the ginger and the blackberries add a nice sweet but tart note. Or another option that goes surprisingly well with the ginger is lemon and fig!

Cantaloupe mellows the sharp ginger and citrus notes, mint and blackberries add a subtle sweet taste to the blend

Substitute cantaloupe juice for watermelon juice in the recipe below, and pair it with blackberries

Cantaloupe and blackberries paired with lime, mint and ginger taste wonderful in a copper flute

Summer fruits peak Ginger Beers and Ales and contrast nicely with the citrus flavor of the lime. Any berry works wonderfully to add some flavor to this traditional drink

THE STYLE CHICKS WILD RASPBERRY MELON END OF SUMMER MOSCOW MULE RECIPE

Just in time for your final farewell end-of summer soirees, summer picnics, a signature drink for summer weddings and celebrations, and for your end of summer blowouts.

Ready to make a summer fruit Moscow Mule?

INGREDIENTS:

  • crushed or soft ice (see recipe below)
  • Wild or purchased raspberries (or blackberries if preferred)
  • mint sprigs
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 4 ounces of ginger beer or tart ginger ale (we chose Reed’s Brewed Raspberry Ginger Ale and skipped the simple syrup)
  • 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • fresh ginger (optional)
  • 1/4 ounce simple syrup (optional)

Summer watermelon, fresh ginger, lime, combined with raspberries and mint fresh from the garden make for tasty combination

  • Juice the limes. Set aside remaining lime slices for garnishing.
  • Make watermelon juice. Put watermelon chunks in a blender, discard pulp if desired, pour the juice into a jar or glass, put aside.
  • Muddle together a few raspberries, and lightly press a mint leaf and a thin slice of ginger (if desired). Pour the resulting mix into the copper mule.
  • Add the lime juice over the muddled mix.
  • Fill mule champagne with crushed or slushie ice, over the muddled mix. Halfway through adding ice, I like to toss in a few more berries and then another squeeze of the lime to fully infuse the drink.
  • Add the vodka
  • Add the melon juice
  • Add the ginger beer
  • Add simple syrup if desired for sweetness
  • Garnish with plenty of fresh mint sprigs, berries, lime or even a small watermelon wedge if desired!

Garnish with plenty of mint sprigs!

ALTERNATIVES

  • Some may prefer a “neater” approach to mix the lime juice, vodka, melon juice, and in a shaker with the spent limes and giving the mix a good shake, then pour that shaker mix through a strainer into the ice filled mule glass, and then add the ginger beer to the mule.
  • Adjust measurements to taste, some extra lime particularly enhances the berries and watermelon!

Extra lime enhances the berry and watermelon flavors, we added a halved lime to each mule

Notice reference to soft ice above. Soft ice is not as hard as ice cubes, but harder than slushie ice. It is often served at Drive-In type restaurants, which remind me of the summers of my youth.

Due to the lovely flute shape of the Kamojo Moscow Mule Copper Flutes Set, you may prefer crushed or soft ice. It is easy to make yourself at home with a big bottle of carbonated water like seltzer water.

Fill smaller to medium-size ice-cube trays with the seltzer, let them set a few hours. Right before using them, give them one or two hard whacks to break them up a bit. While soft ice tends to melt quickly in a regular drink, the copper mules keep them suspended in soft ice form for much longer without melting.

The Wild Raspberry Melon Moscow Mule in the Kamojo Moscow Mule Copper Flute

So many events and milestones are worth celebrating, engagements, promotions, graduations, weddings, just to name a few. Champagne is often the go-to libation for celebrating, but it is fun to change it up a bit with a mule themed drink, and it still feels festive and celebratory when served in Kamojo Moscow Mule Copper Flutes Set.

A traditional bakery not far from the Yale University Campus, we get all our special occasion cakes here! From now on, any event or celebration worthy of a bakery cake qualifies as an excuse to use the Kamajo Copper Champagne Flutes

Kamajo Copper Champagne Flutes are ideal as wedding flutes for the bride and groom or even the entire bridal party, or to serve appetizers such as shrimp cocktail.

Summer fruit-filled Kamojo Copper Moscow Mules Champagne Flutes: Icy cold, satisfying, festive, and definitively summer!

My favorite Men’s Scent

Purchase date:  11/30/2021

The product smells amazing, really is great. Only reason for the low score is because the small bottle was cracked somehow and the product leaked in the box, but the big bottle was fine. I did not open the box till a few weeks after delivery due to it being a gift, but the room the box was sitting in, still smells great due to the cologne seeping out.

The grill isn’t the only thing firing up this Fourth of July.

Record travelers will hit the highways for Thursday’s holiday but won’t escape the heat as much of the country will see historic highs — and thunderstorms that threaten to rain on some parades.

“A portion of the country will see nature’s fireworks, which will provide their own show of showers and thunderstorms,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Mays told The Post.

Thunderstorms will likely span Montana, the Dakotas and Ohio to Virginia and Maryland, Mays said, and could reach New York City and southern New England.

“But it’s not going to be a total washout,” Mays added.

It will feel over 100 degrees in the south and out west, where heightened wildfire risks are prompting officials to consider fireworks and campfire bans.

Aside from a possible afternoon shower on Independence Day, the Big Apple is in for muggy temperatures in the low 90s.

The days leading up to the Fourth will remain in the 80s and the following weekend will see thunderstorms and temperatures lingering near 90.

Beachgoers should beware of dangerous rip currents along south-facing beaches on Long Island, Fox Weather reported.

Approximately 5.7 million New Yorkers hightail it out of the humidity for the holiday, contributing to a July 4th projected to be the busiest ever in terms of travel, according to AAA .

Over 70.9 million total travelers will head 50 miles or more from home, up 5% from last year and 8% from 2019. More than 60 million will go by car while air travel is also expected to set a new record.

The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen more than 32 million people between June 27 and July 8, a 5.4% increase from last year.

Friday was the 4th busiest day ever, with just under 3 million people passing through airports nationwide, the TSA reported.

“Summer vacations are in full swing, and with the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Alec Slatky, public and government affairs director for AAA Northeast.

The worst traffic delays are expected on Wednesday, July 3, and Sunday, July 7, according to data analytics firm INRIX.

In the last few hours, the House of Commons has opened its doors to a new cohort of MPs - and a brand new prime minister.

The Speaker of the House has been elected - with Sir Lindsay Hoyle taking on the role again - and Sir Keir Starmer has made his first address in the chamber as prime minister.

We've also heard from Tory leader Rishi Sunak, and various other party leaders - including Nigel Farage, Adrian Ramsay and Sir Ed Davey.

But there is plenty more to come today - here's a brief overview:

  • MPs are now being sworn in as members of the House of Commons, starting with Sir Keir Starmer's new cabinet ;
  • They will be followed by Rishi Sunak's shadow cabinet , which was only confirmed last night;
  • Backbenchers will then have their turn, but it's unlikely all 650 members will be sworn in today - it will probably spill to tomorrow;
  • Elsewhere, the selection process for a new chair of the 1922 Committee will get under way. You can read more about this in our 3.42pm post .

We'll keep you updated with any significant developments.

As our  deputy political editor  Sam Coates   said, parliament mostly had a unified front when MPs took their seats this afternoon.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the House of Commons had an opportunity to show politics can be a "force for good", while Rishi Sunak vowed the Tories would be an "effective and professional" opposition.

You can watch their statements below:

There was a "spirit of unity" in the Commons this afternoon, as parliament returned for the first time since the election.

That's how our deputy political editor Sam Coates saw things, as the prime minister led other party leaders in paying tribute to the re-elected Speaker and the arrival of hundreds of new MPs.

But there were still "moments of politics", says Sam - from Keir Starmer "almost looking for forgiveness" with a tribute to Diane Abbott, to the Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey saying the new government had been left with a "mess" to deal with.

And "there was something of a murmur" when Nigel Farage spoke.

The Reform UK leader chose to sit in the back row as he made his Commons debut, and used his moment to speak to "make clear his unhappiness" about former Speaker John Bercow.

Mr Farage wasn't keen on how he handled debates around Brexit following the 2016 referendum.

So not all in the spirit of unity, then.

We spotted Sir Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak having a chat as they made their way out of the Commons chamber.

They've both made the walk a few times, though never in their current roles of course - what could they have been talking about?

We also spotted Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and her opposite number James Cleverly in quite deep conversation.

They all followed the Speaker-elect out of the chamber and over to the House of Lords, which will formalise the Speaker's re-election, and then they'll all head back to the Commons.

With parliament being back in action, a new chairman of the Tories' backbench 1922 Committee will likely be in place by the end of today.

The committee, previously led by Sir Graham Brady, will play a significant role in organising the process to elect the new leader of the Conservative Party.

Rishi Sunak confirmed last week that he will resign as Tory leader as soon as a process for electing a successor is in place.

Candidates to become chairman will take part in hustings with members this afternoon, in what we believe will be a quick selection process.

It is thought that a winner will be announced tonight.

When elected, the chair will lead a powerful group of backbench MPs, and be responsible for collecting letters of no confidence.

But who is in the running to lead the group?

In short, we don't really know.

Our political reporter Jennifer Scott  has heard numerous members point to the widely reported names of Geoffrey Clifton-Brown and Bob Blackman as contenders.

Other Tories told her there was rumour Mark Garnier might run, and perhaps even Sir John Whittingdale.

However, she was also told by one Tory member that Mr Blackman is the only person they know who is actively asking for support.

Before Nigel Farage spoke, we heard from Sir Ed Davey.

And no, he didn't parachute into the Commons.

The Liberal Democrats are back to being the third-largest party in parliament, and he vowed they would "hold the government to account".

Sir Ed continued: "We will focus on the health and care crisis, we will focus on ending the sewage scandal, we will focus on helping people with the cost of living crisis."

As noticed by our Politics Hub reporter  Ben Bloch , who is in the Chamber, Tory MPs looked furious and grumbled rather noticeably as Sir Ed talked about the "mess" the new Labour government has inherited.

There was "quite the eye-roll" from Oliver Dowden, who then muttered something to Rishi Sunak as Sir Ed was speaking...

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, is next up, describing his party of five MPs as "the new kids on the block".

"We have no experience in this parliament whatsoever even though some of us have tried, many times, over the years," the MP says.

"So we can't judge you from working in this place, but we can judge you from the way the outside world sees you."

Mr Farage says he doesn't just mean the UK - but the world.

He goes on to endorse Sir Lindsay Hoyle as Speaker of the Commons.

But it isn't without a dig at his predecessor John Bercow.

"It is, I must say, in marked contrast to the little man that was there before you and besmirched the office so dreadfully in doing his best to overturn the biggest democratic result in the history of the country.

"We support you fully."

Addressing the Commons, new Mother of the House Diane Abbott notes how the number of female MPs has ballooned since she first took a seat in the House.

She says: "When I was a new member in 1987, there were only 40 female members of parliament - today we have 264.

"And some of us are glad that we have lived to see this.

"I can't speak about the increased numbers of female members of parliament without referencing my predecessor Baroness Harriet Harman, who did so much to work to have an equal and diverse House.

"We are going into very tumultuous times, and historically this House has played a role in these events both nationally and internationally - and I'm sure it will be the same going forward."

Rishi Sunak, for the first time as leader of the opposition, is on his feet in the Commons and welcomes back the Commons Speaker.

He congratulates Sir Keir Starmer on his election victory and wishes him well with the "formidable task" ahead.

"He and his family deserve the good wishes of all of us," he says.

"Whatever disputes we may have in this parliament, I know everyone in this House will not lose sight of the fact we are all motivated by our desire to serve our constituents, our country, and advance the principles that we honourably believe in."

Tories will serve 'professionally' in opposition

The Tory leader also offers his welcome and congratulations to parliament's new MPs, and says he is looking forward to continuing to represent his Richmond constituency.

He also again offers his apology to Conservative colleagues who lost their seat last week.

"It is important that after 14 years in government, the Conservative Party rebuilds," he says.

Mr Sunak vows the party will serve in opposition "professionally, effectively, and humbly".

Sir Keir Starmer is now on his feet in the House of Commons for the very first time as prime minister.

He begins by congratulating Sir Lindsay Hoyle as his re-election as Commons Speaker, as we have just witnessed.

Sir Keir then welcomes all the new members in the House, and pays tribute to Sir Edward Leigh - the new Father of the House.

He also hails the election of the largest number of LGBT+ MPs of any parliament in the world.

Politics 'a force for good', says PM

"And given all that diversity... I hope you will not begrudge me with a slight departure from convention to also pay tribute to the new Mother of the House, Diane Abbott," Sir Keir says.

"Who has done so much in her career over so many years to fight for a parliament that truly represents modern Britain.

"We welcome her back to her place."

Sir Keir goes on to say that the House now has an opportunity - and a responsibility - to show that politics can be "a force for good".

He says the "politics of performance" must be replaced with a "politics of service".
