How Star Trek Helped Discovery Star Emily Coutts Come Out

How Star Trek Helped Discovery Star Emily Coutts Come Out

Emily Coutts

A journey through time and space inspired the actor's path to self-discovery.

After reading the script for the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Discovery, Emily Coutts -- the actor who portrays Keyla Detmer, a bridge officer and pilot aboard U.S.S. Discovery -- burst into tears in her car. In the storyline, crew members of the Starfleet ship decide to join Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) in traveling to the future. In doing so, they chose to leave the life they knew in order to advance the greater good.

In that moment, Coutts recalls thinking, "This is where I'm at in my life right now. I can stay where things are comfortable. Or I can go and grow into my full self, and really come out, and tell everyone, and celebrate that, and go to the future, whatever that holds."

"It wasn't so much that reading [the script] made me realize I was queer," clarifies the 32-year-old. "I had been discovering that for many years prior. It was more that when I read it, I was inspired to be brave enough to finally come out, and tell people that I was gay, and trust that my future would be a beautiful thing if I was living openly and freely. I'm really grateful for that experience and proud of myself for taking the leap."

Star Trek: Discovery broke the rainbow ceiling in the Star Trek universe, introducing a host of heroic LGBTQ + characters portrayed by out actors. The Paramount+ show not only inspired queer viewers to more boldly live their lives, but behind the scenes, it also helped Coutts in her coming-out journey; she was "welcomed with loving arms" by Discovery 's cast and crew. By 2019, when season 2 debuted, she had come out to her friends, family, and the world.

"I think being surrounded by so many queer castmates and having [out writer] Michelle Paradise be [co-]showrunner -- it felt very accepting and loving," Coutts says. "To be able to go to your work and tell everyone that you're coming out is a gift and a privilege that I got to have."

The experience was a game-changing moment for Coutts, who is now an out actor but does not closely identify with a particular label. "I use a lot of them interchangeably," she says, including gay, queer, and bi. While she never had a formal "coming-out" statement or tweet, Coutts now feels free to share her queer life in public and on social media. Notably, an August 2020 Instagram post announced she was "marrying a real-life mermaid," producer Lexy Altman, whom she met on the dating app Hinge.

"It was like the easiest...thing that I've ever done," Coutts said of popping the question, which she did while overlooking Altman's favorite Malibu beach two summers ago. "I proposed and I was so excited." (Altman said yes, and the two are tentatively making wedding plans in the midst of an unpredictable pandemic.) In the meantime, Coutts's feed ( @couttsemily ) is full of scenes of the loving couple enjoying outdoor adventures, including driving a 25-foot RV to Yosemite last year.

Moreover, Coutts now relishes the public appearances she makes at conventions. She recalls a recent LGBTQ+ panel in Europe that was "full of people, and full of energy, and full of emotion" for the diversity Discovery has birthed into the cosmos. "It was like, holy crap. Every time I do one of those things, I realize what impact it's having," she says. Once an outsider to the Star Trek universe herself, Coutts lauds how anyone on the "outskirts" of social norms can find family within the fan base.

"I think that one of the most beautiful parts of our fan base and Trek family -- that I experience firsthand at conventions -- is that no matter who you are, what you look like, who you love, how you fit in to the outside world, when you are a part of Trek, you are fully accepted for who you are," she expounds. "When I am there, it really inspires me because the fans create this loving environment where differences are celebrated."

Before coming out, Coutts briefly considered the impact on her acting career, but she quickly pushed any concerns aside. "I wasn't really that afraid of being typecast or being boxed in by it," she says, noting the progress Hollywood has made in recent years, in part due to inclusive shows like Discovery . "I felt like it was something that could be celebrated, and actually bring me more interesting work, and work that feels closer to my heart."

In addition to her Star Trek family, her Discovery character, Detmer, helped her find her voice -- particularly as the overworked pilot struggled with PTSD following the ship's jump through time. Like Detmer, "I grieved my old life. And then I moved on into celebration," she says.

Coutts has a sense that Detmer may be on a queer journey of her own; the character's trauma led her to be "vulnerable enough" to acknowledge that there were aspects "not quite right" in her life, she observes. "I feel like she maybe is starting to accept herself in her own queerness, whatever that means...whatever the writers want to do romantically or not."

"I love driving, and I'm a great parallel parker," Coutts shares with a laugh. "I'm just like, Yes, I can, I could drive this ship.... I grew up in a small town. I had to learn how to drive so that I could get out and go."

Indeed, Coutts was raised in Canada, where initially she was more of "an outdoors kid" than a consumer of film and television. "I grew up with three brothers in a big house, lots of opinions," she shares, and it was her brothers who usually chose the channel. But she still found characters that resonated with her, including the titular character of Anne of Green Gables , "a chatty redhead who was fearless, bold, and full of heart," she says. "I was also obsessed with Matilda and convinced myself that if I stared long enough at the Cheerios, I too could make the box move with my magic. They were both outsiders, so to speak, but they had these secret skills that helped them thrive in their environments; I always found that very inspiring."

Coutts was introduced to Matilda through a brother who came out as queer 10 years prior to her. At the time, "it was a lot for my family," she shares. "It was a lot for my mom. She had to face her religion and decide how she was going to still celebrate her faith and also still celebrate and accept my brother." The family chose acceptance and eventually embraced Coutts when she came out a decade later.

After high school, where she began performing in plays and even directed one, Coutts went on to study acting at York University in Toronto. There, she became enthralled with the work of Miranda July, known for Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005), The Future (2011), and Kajillionaire (2020). "The first time I watched a Miranda July film, my head almost exploded," she says. "I had never seen something so quirky and unique, and it inspired me, as both an actor and filmmaker, to want to tell stories with authentic and fascinating characters."

So in addition to acting -- she has landed roles in The Bright Side of the Moon and Crimson Peak -- Coutts is a writer and filmmaker. She penned a 2020 short, Dear Jesus , a coming-of-age story of a girl wrestling with Catholic guilt. During her Discovery downtime, she is creating another short, "a horror film about a couple deciding whether to have a child or not."

Artistically, "I'm very interested in looking at children, especially women on the cusp of puberty...changing from girl to womanhood, and the trauma of that transition for a lot of us," she shares. The filmmaking process has sparked a degree of self-reflection for Coutts about her own girlhood.

"I really had to weed through that time to be able to heal and grow and trust myself," she says. "I really think little girls are told to do this and this and this, and they never like really get connected to their instincts and their impulses."

With these projects and Discovery , she hopes to push back against the forces that repress women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. "I just feel very lucky to be able to tell this story," Coutts concludes. "And I want to continue to tell queer stories and stories about women and girls and add to the conversation about equality. And I'm just happy to be included in this and to be able to represent queerness -- and represent queerness in space!"

Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery returns to Paramount+ on February 10.

'You Can't Tell It's Me': Legend of Zelda Voice Actor on Star Trek: Discovery Cameo

Game of thrones star emilia clarke to lead spy thriller series, 10 tv adaptations that are better if you don't read the books first.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 2, "Far From Home," now streaming on CBS All Access.

While Michael Burnham time-traveled to the year 3188 in the Season 3 premiere of Star Trek: Discovery , her crew was nowhere to be found, even though they were supposed to be right behind her. Now, in the series' latest episode , "Far From Home," the U.S.S. Discovery finally arrives in the future, a full year later . However, it's not exactly a warm welcome, and travelling through a wormhole takes a toll on the ship, effectively shutting it down. Luckily, Lieutenant Keyla Detmer is able to land the ship and save  the lives of everyone onboard. Still, the crash landing results in plenty of injuries, and Detmer herself is badly injured, which could be the start of a very big problem.

RELATED: Star Trek: Discovery - Punching, Drug-Induced Burnham Is The BEST Burnham

Lieutenant Keyla Detmer has been a part of the U.S.S. Discovery crew since the series' first season and is the ship's helm officer/pilot. In "Far From Home," Detmer is able to land the ship, which only has minimal power, on an icy planet called The Colony. The crew immediately embarks on a race against time to get the ship back up and running, lest they be consumed by parasitic ice . Everyone who can work on fixing the ship does, while those injured are sent to sickbay.

But the landing left its mark on Detmer, who has a bad cut on the side of her face. She also appears shaken by the entire ordeal, and Saru orders her to get her wound treated, so that's what she does. Once she arrives at sickbay, Detmer is treated by one of the medical officers. Her wound is patched up rapidly, and she's cleared to resume her duties. However, all might not be right with Detmer, as she gets stuck in a daze from which she needs to be snapped out at several points in the episode.

Just what's wrong with Detmer isn't totally clear. Her wound was healed, which means she shouldn't be reeling from it anymore. However, since the wound was located near her cybernetic implant, it's possible that device was somehow affected, and that is what is sending her into a daze. Still, that's something the medical officers would surely be able to pick up on in their diagnosis, so something else might be going on.

Perhaps this is a result of her implant adjusting to the future. After all, there is still much we don't know about the 32nd century, an era that is mostly Starfleet-free. Clearly, something happened to Detmer in-between the ship's trip through time and hopefully, the helm officer won't wait too long to bring it up. If not, this could be the prelude to a much larger catastrophe later on.

Streaming on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Commander Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly, Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber, David Ajala as Cleveland "Book" Booker, Blu del Barrio as Adira, Ian Alexander as Grey, Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Reno, Ethan Peck as Spock and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou. New episodes of Season 3 air on Thursdays.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Finale Ending & Shocking Epilogue Explained

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery's Season 5 & Series Finale - "Life, Itself"

  • Captain Burnham makes a pivotal choice to banish the Progenitors' technology for the greater good of the galaxy.
  • USS Discovery's epic battle against the Breen pays homage to Star Trek: The Next Generation with a saucer separation.
  • The finale hints at a future for Admiral Burnham and the USS Discovery, leaving the door open for potential sequels or movies.

Star Trek: Discovery 's stunning season 5 and series finale concludes the hunt for the greatest treasure in the galaxy, and the extended finale's emotional epilogue finally answers one of Discovery 's biggest questions as it says goodbye to Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise and directed by Olatunde Osunname, Star Trek: Discovery 's finale, "Life, Itself", sees Captain Burnham make a pivotal choice about the Progenitors' treasure while the USS Discovery defeats the Breen.

Captain Burnham competed with Moll (Eve Harlow) for the Progenitors' technology, but it could only be Michael who could access it as she passed every test that came with the Progenitors scientists' clues . Burnham met one of the Progenitors (Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama) who revealed Michael was to be the new steward of the Progenitors' technology, as Betazoid scientist Dr. Marina Derex was when she found it in the 24th century. Meanwhile, Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) faced down Breen Primarch Tahal (Patricia Summersett) while Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) led the USS Discovery to keep the Breen dreadnought from reaching the portal to the Progenitors' technology. Here's how Star Trek: Discovery ended and what it all meant.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.

Why Captain Burnham Sends The Progenitors Technology Away

Star trek already has "infinite diversity in infinite combinations".

The Progenitor gave Captain Burnham the choice of what to do with the power of creation, and Michael decided that no one culture should control it. Instead, Burnham decided to send the Progenitors' portal into the binary black holes' event horizon to keep it safe and unreachable. Michael's decision was born from the fact that she didn't want the responsibility of being the technology's steward but, more importantly, Burnham realized Star Trek 's galaxy already has "infinite diversity in infinite combinations". Control of the technology, even by the United Federation of Planets, would ultimately lead to abuse, war, and death.

The Progenitor revealed that the technology is older than they were and that their species found it and decided to use it to populate the galaxy with myriad humanoid lifeforms because their species was alone in the universe.

As she exited the Progenitors' dimension, Captain Burnham witnessed four billion years of creation and everything that led to the galaxy's existence. This solidified Michael's choice to banish the power of creation. Tragically for Moll, the Progenitor revealed to Burnham that while the technology could resurrect L'ak (Elias Toufexis) physically, it can't restore his memories or his personality . Burham and Moll returned to the USS Discovery where Moll was taken into custody. Burnham told her crew that she would speak to President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) and Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) about her choice to banish the power of creation, and she felt that they would agree. Ultimately, Burnham was empowered by the Progenitor and made the unilateral decision she felt was right for the galaxy.

Moll too willingly accepted Burnham's explanation that there was no way to resurrect L'ak, but it's possible Moll was fed her own information when she tried and failed to access the Progenitors' technology.

USS Discovery Beat The Breen With A Star Trek: TNG Enterprise Tribute

Discovery did a saucer separation.

As Ambassador Saru and Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) tried to ward Primarch Tahal from entering the battle for the Progenitors' portal, the USS Discovery was still outmatched by the Breen dreadnought. Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) piloted a shuttle to lock onto the portal. They succeeded because Culber was able to access the memories of Trill scientist Jinaal for the right coordinates . Hugh achieving the ineffable though Jinaal paid off his growing spiritual enlightenment throughout Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Meanwhile, Commander Rayner and the USS Discovery defeated the Breen dreadnought with one final, awesome tribute to Star Trek: The Next Generation and the USS Enterprise-D. Rayner ordered a saucer separation and gambled on Discovery's spore drive being able to jump the dreadnought if it was in the middle of both components of Discovery. Saru then led Tahal's ship to the other Breen dreadnought as Rayner's daring plan worked: All of the Breen were instantaneously sent to the Galactic Barrier, a node to the USS Discovery's journey to make First Contact with Species 10-C at the end of S tar Trek: Discovery season 4 .

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's story is a sequel to the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6 episode, "The Chase".

Doctor Kovich's True Identity Is Daniels From Star Trek: Enterprise

It's been a long road getting from there to here..

Star Trek: Discovery finally revealed the identity of Doctor Kovich (David Cronenberg): the bespectacled Federation official, Kovich, is the older version of Agent Daniels (Matt Winston) from Star Trek: Enterprise ! In the 22nd century, Daniels posed as a member of the NX-01 Enterprise's crew and revealed Star Trek 's Temporal War to Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). Using the codename "Doctor Kovich", which is itself a Red Directive, Daniels is now protecting the Federation and the timeline post-Temporal Wars.

Star Trek legacy Easter eggs shown in Doctor Kovich's office include Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge's (LeVar Burton) VISOR, Captain Benjamin Sisko's (Avery Brooks) baseball, and a Chateau Picard wine bottle.

Doctor Kovich introduced himself to Captain Burnham as "Agent Daniels, USS Enterprise... and other places" , which is a nod to the 26th century's USS Enterprise-J Daniels served on, but also the NX-01 Enterprise led by Captain Archer. Further, Kovich had plans for Moll, believing the skilled former courier could be "useful" after she serves her Federation prison sentence. There were numerous theories about Doctor Kovich's true identity, including that he could be a Lanthanite or El-Aurian, but Kovich really being Agent Daniels is a stunning revelation that pleasingly ties Star Trek: Discovery back to Star Trek: Enterprise .

How Star Trek: Discovery Ends For USS Discoverys Crew

Discovery's crew gets one final reunion.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's ending gave certain members of the crew conclusions to their arcs . Dr. Hugh Culber had one of his big questions answered about his growing spiritual enlightenment. Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) saw the growth of Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner's relationship and decided to apply a similar mentorship program to Starfleet Academy. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) protested Burnham banishing the Progenitors' technology, but resigned himself to his achievements and being proud of what a fine (and wise) Starfleet Officer Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) has become.

As seen in Star Trek: Discovery' s finale epilogue, the crew of the USS Discovery assembled on the bridge in a powerful and resonant ending reminiscent of Titanic . Not only was the cast of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 all there, but so were Commanders Kayla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo), and Lt. Commander Ronald Bryce (Ronnie Rowe, Jr.), who missed most or all of Star Trek: Discovery season 5. It was a beautiful moment honoring the actors and characters who have spanned Star Trek: Discovery 's five seasons.

Book & Burnham Reunite At Admiral Saru & President T'Rina's Wedding

Discovery's first couple are back on..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's original ending was the wedding of Saru and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling), which took place "several weeks" after Captain Burnham found the Progenitors' technology. The Kelpien and Vulcan tied the knot, and Admiral Charles Vance revealed that Saru has been promoted to Admiral. Meanwhile, Burnham and Cleveland Booker put their personal turmoil behind them and declared that they love each other. United once more, Book joined Burnham on the USS Discovery's next mission after Doctor Kovich summoned her with her Infinity Room symbol .

Thanks to his heroic efforts in helping locate the Progenitors' technology, Book's Federation sentence has been commuted and he is a free man.

Saru and T'Rina's wedding was attended by the crew of the USS Discovery, who are Saru's family, and many Vulcan and Federation dignitaries. While it wasn't made clear, Star Trek: Discovery 's finale hints that Commander Rayner remained aboard the USS Discovery as First Officer and Lt. Tilly returned to her teaching post at Starfleet Academy. Presumably, the rest of the USS Discovery's crew reported to their starship for their new mission after Saru and T'Rina were wed .

Admiral Saru likely took a new role overseeing Starfleet with Admiral Vance at Federation HQ so he could remain close to his bride, T'Rina.

Star Trek: Discovery Epilogue: Admiral Burnham and Books Son Is The New Captain Burnham

Starfleet's burnham legacy continues..

Star Trek: Discovery 's finale epilogue flashes forward roughly 30 years , placing it in the 3220s. Cleveland Booker has been happily married to Admiral Michael Burnham for decades, and they have made their home on Sanctuary Four, where Book and Michael once dropped off Molly the trance worm in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Book also planted the world root from Kwejian he was given by the Eternal Gallery and Archive in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 on Sanctuary Four, which remade the planet's flora into a new, thriving version of Kwejian, Book's doomed homeworld.

Michael and Book also have an adult son who is the new Captain Burnham. Named for Book's nephew Leto (Luca Doulgeris), who died along with Kwejian at the start of Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Michael and Book's son is the newly promoted Captain Leto Burnham (Sawandi Wilson), who came to Sanctuary Four to escort his mother to Federation HQ and the USS Discovery's final mission. Admiral Burnham had wise words of connection and family for her son, who hopes to find the same relationships with the crew of his unnamed starship as Michael did with the USS Discovery's crew.

Admiral Michael Burnham learned the lesson that the deeper meaning she was searching for was spending the time you have with the people you love.

Star Trek: Discoverys Epilogue Finally Confirms Short Treks' Calypso Is Canon

Discovery answers its biggest short trek mystery.

Star Trek: Discovery' s finale epilogue ends with one last incredible surprise as the series sets up the Star Trek: Short Treks episode, "Calypso" and officially makes it canon . In "Calypso", Zora (Annabelle Wallis) and the USS Discovery are alone in a region of space for hundreds of years when a soldier named Craft (Aldis Hodge) comes aboard and forms a bittersweet relationship with the lonely A.I. Admiral Burnham tells Zora that Discovery's final voyage is a Red Directive mission , and she only knows the word "Craft" but not who or what it means.

To synch back up with Star Trek: Short Treks ' "Calypso", the USS Discovery is retrofitted back to its 23rd-century Crossfield Class design, with the A removed from its USS Discovery-A designation . Admiral Burnham tells Zora that when they reach their destination, she and the crew will leave. But after Zora meets Craft, the USS Discovery will come back and form a new family with the descendants of her original crew. The final shot of Star Trek: Discovery is the USS Discovery given full honors by Starfleet in a sendoff as it spore jumps to its destiny in "Calypso".

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange" also set up "Calypso" but in an alternate timeline where the Breen destroyed the Federation with the Progenitors' technology.

Star Trek: Discovery Doesnt Close The Door On Season 6 Or A Movie

There could still be more discovery someday..

Star Trek: Discovery 's ending and epilogue conclude Captain Michael Burnham's story , but despite showing the future of Admiral Burnham and the USS Discovery, the finale's coda still doesn't preclude season 6 or a Star Trek: Discovery streaming movie . After all, Captain Burnham and Discovery launch a new mission in season 5's ending before the flash forward. While Admiral Saru has a new role in Starfleet and Lt. Sylvia Tilly is back at Starfleet Academy, the rest of the USS Discovery's crew presumably flew back into action. And Discovery has many more years of adventures to come that audiences won't see.

Fingers are crossed that Captain Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery will return someday.

For now, Star Trek: Discovery is over and there are no known plans for Star Trek: Discovery season 6 or a reunion movie , but this doesn't mean it couldn't happen in the future after some time has passed. Star Trek on Paramount+ still has Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 3 and 4, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , and Star Trek: Section 31 coming in the next two years. But given that all three of those projects spun off from Star Trek: Discovery , Michael Burnham's show remains crucial to the Star Trek on Paramount+ franchise. Fingers are crossed that Captain Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery will return someday.

Keyla Detmer (mirror)

Keyla Detmer was a female Terran Imperial Starfleet officer in the mid- 23rd century . She served aboard the ISS Shenzhou as a first officer in the 2250s . She bore medals on her uniform identifying her as a member of the bridge crew and as first officer . Detmer was on the bridge when her former captain Michael Burnham seemingly returned from the dead to resume her command. When Burnham entered the bridge with Danby Connor 's corpse, Detmer seemed pleased, joining in the bridge crew's ovation for Burnham. ( DIS : " Despite Yourself ")

One of her duties on the Shenzhou was pronouncing death sentences for individuals prior to their being beamed out into open space, where they froze to death while being suffocated . A few days after Burnham's return, the Shenzhou received orders to proceed to Harlak and destroy the rebel base there. Detmer ordered the photon torpedos prepared, but Burnham angrily overruled her. Although Detmer was not pleased to hear of Burnham's alternative plan (infiltrating the rebel camp to gather intelligence), she supported her captain and did not rebel. After Burnham's slave Saru foiled Ash Tyler 's attempt on Burnham's life, Detmer gently but firmly reminded Burnham that execution was the only punishment for a (failed) attempt on an Imperial captain's life. She was later present on the bridge when the ISS Charon arrived and obliterated Harlak, bowing before Emperor Philippa Georgiou 's hologram moments later. ( DIS : " The Wolf Inside ")

In an alternate timeline experienced by Emperor Georgiou via the Guardian of Forever , Detmer was killed by Burnham on board the ISS Discovery in 2255 as one of Burnham's co-conspirators. ( DIS : " Terra Firma, Part 2 ")

Star Trek: Discovery 3.2 Review - Ups And Downs From Far From Home

No, it's not the latest Spiderman sequel. There isn't even any webslinging!

Star Trek Discovery Season 3 Trailer

The third season of Star Trek: Discovery has delivered another cracker of an episode, with plenty to discuss. The ship has finally arrived in the future, filling the void she left behind in the first episode last week. Everyone gets their moments to shine here, though the episode is not without issues.

The imagery and the music are both stunning again here this week - it's clear that, in the words of John Hammond, they spared no expense here. From the opening to closing, the episode is full of tension, humour, soft character moments and some of the typical violence that we have now come to expect from Discovery.

There are some problems, addressed below, but overall there is another strong offering this week from Star Trek's far future, one that is sure to divide fans regardless of whether it was brilliant or not!

With that in mind, follow on with this article as we delve into the various ups and downs from this week's episode of Star Trek: Discovery, Far From Home - and don't forget to check out the video list over on YouTube as well!

9. Discovery Crashlands (Up)

Star Trek Discovery Season 3 Trailer

The opening to the episode is a stunning feast for the eyes as Discovery comes through the wormhole and emerges on the other side. Unfortunately for them, the other side just happens to have a tonne of asteroids directly in their path.

Kayla Detmer is the true hero of the moment as she snaps to action and begins to pilot the ship as best she can around and, yes, through some of these giant rocks. However, internal systems are buggered and that ship is going down to the planet below. She rolls the ship to let the dorsal side take most of the heat from the atmosphere, and expertly guides the ship during the crash that follows.

The scene is tense, there is a genuine sense of threat and, early in the season or no, there is no certainty that everyone will make it out alive. It is a fantastic first scene of the Discovery in this episode and a wonderful use of imagery.

  • Trivia The Starfleet vessels seen in the first season, including the Discovery, the Shenzou and the redesigned Enterprise, were all designed by production artist John Eaves. Eaves' work with Star Trek spans three decades. Probably his most notable contribution was the design of the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact (1996) .
  • Goofs With Michael being the adoptive sister of Spock, the series has many flashbacks to their childhood and upbringing on Vulcan. Spock's Vulcan half-brother, Sybok, does not appear nor is mention during these scenes. In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) , Spock says that he and Sybok grew up together. However, since it's never stated when Sybok joined Sarek's home - only that he did so following his mother's death - or when he was exiled from the family, it's not impossible Sybok moved in after Burnham, and left before she graduated (the two extremes of the flashbacks). Also, since Sybok was never mentioned before Star Trek V, it seems reasonable the family never spoke of him again after his estrangement.

Wilson Cruz - TrekMovie interview - Star Trek: Discovery

| August 25, 2024 | By: Laurie Ulster 8 comments so far

On Tuesday, the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery arrives on Blu-ray and DVD complete with audio commentarp, deleted scenes, exclusive special features, a gag reel, and more. ( Full details and pre-order links available here .) Before Disco comes home one last time, Wilson Cruz talked to TrekMovie about the biggest challenges of his five-year run as Dr. Hugh Culber, the most fun, the breakthrough moments, opportunities he’d still hoped to have, and his thoughts on what Hugh could bring to Starfleet Academy .

Looking back on all five seasons of Star Trek: Discovery , what arc of Culber’s was the most challenging for you to play?

I’m going to be honest with you: This past season was pretty challenging, but if I was going to pick the most challenging season, the one that I had to get right in order for the rest of it to work was season 2, where we see Culber come back to life, and not necessarily come back and just jump right into the old life. He had to deal with the real ramifications of what happened, sharing the ship with the person who killed him, but also taking stock of his life and trying to understand which parts of it worked for him in the past and which parts he was no longer willing to accept, or at least was willing to question. He questioned his marriage, he questioned whether he wanted to be a doctor anymore. He dealt with Ash Tyler even in a physical way, so making all of that resonate, and real, and set him up for the person he was going to become in season 3, this person who was unshackled from his past and allowed him to step into who he wants to be? That’s that was really satisfying.

Wilson Cruz as Culber and Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler in Star Trek: Discovery season 2

Culber confronts Ash Tyler in season 2

So in contrast, what was the most fun?

I think the most fun season was this past season, season 5.  Because he’s still asking big questions. He’s still dealing with some anxiety, with the unknown, with uncertainty, but he’s dealing with it face on, head on. And I was afforded all of these opportunities as an actor to stretch, to have fun, to go big, right? Playing Jinaal was a real challenge, and it was fun, but creating him for two weeks before those cameras rolled was one of the biggest acting challenges of my life, because they literally were like “You can make him whoever you want,” which was like, don’t say THAT to me, right? Like,…  parameters. So I was trying on a bunch of different people, and it was, you know, hit or miss. I landed on this version of it that I didn’t even show the other actors until the cameras rolled and they got to see him, because the very first scene we shot was the zhian’tara, where he gets taken over by Jinaal. So when Jinaal comes out, that was the first time that they saw him, so all of those reactions you’re seeing in that moment are very real.

David Ajala as Book, Wilson Cruz as Culber, Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery

Jinaal takes Book and Michael on an unpredictable excursion to find the next clue left by the Progenitors in season 5

You did a beautiful job. I mean, we’ve talked about this , but it was incredible. You really embodied this new person.

Also, the scenes with Book was really, were really fun to play, right? That creating that relationship, building that relationship, so and getting to do a scene in Spanish with my grandmother, and honoring our grandmothers. You know, doing a scene in Spanish–I had never in my life, in my career, been allowed to do a scene in my native language. So that was really exciting and satisfying to do. Look, I have chills. [holds up his arm]

Culber (Wilson Cruz) speaks Spanish to a hologram of his grandmother

And if there’d been another season, what would you like to have seen Culber do? He’s already been through so much, but what else would you like to explore with him?

The thing is, is that I felt, even before we knew it was the end of the series, I felt like season 5 was the end of this chapter for him. You know, because at the end, when we see him in that last scene, he has embraced this uncertainty. He has embraced the wonder and awesomeness of things that he can’t explain in his life, but that have been amazing… have been literally awesome, like in the real definition of the word. And we see him just kind of smile and accept it and be okay with being in awe of it, as opposed to just needing answers for everything like the scientist that he is. I was excited to see who he was going to become now that he had really stepped into his own, into the fact that he wasn’t just a doctor, that he was also the counselor, that he had created all of these relationships with characters outside of Paul. So I really wanted to see him go harder into his counselor role, like I wanted to see him on away missions, and how his being a counselor really helped him bring that kind of understanding to away missions. Because he’s the most empathetic character on the show, he has insight that others don’t, and I wanted to see him bring that more to away missions, and I think we would have probably seen him on more away missions. And I wanted to see him more physical. I wanted to see him… You know, we got to see him fight a couple of times, and it was, I would say, pretty impressive. And I wanted to see more of that side of him too, that he’s no pushover.

Culber goes on an away mission to the 10C planet in season 4

So if you get the call to guest star on Starfleet Academy , what would you like to see Culber doing there? Have you thought about that?

Yeah! I think he’s kind of the perfect person to guide the cadets who want to be counselors, to help them lean into their strengths in terms of their own empathy, their willingness, their ability to listen, when it’s appropriate to challenge when it’s not. [laughs] I would love to see him play that kind of role that allows young people who are taking on new challenges to listen to their instincts, which is a hard thing to do when you’re young, because you don’t actually think you know anything. You have this bravura that says that you do, but inside you have the insecurity of like, “Can I do this? Do I know how to do this? Will I succeed?” I’d love to see him do that.

That doesn’t go away for some people anyway.

Yeah. But also, like, leaning into it, right? Like, as a counselor, you know the fact that you understand that that never goes away, how you allow that to guide you, and have that be a strength and not a weakness.

Well, I hope you get to do it, because that would be lovely to see

We’ll see! [crosses fingers]

Even though DISCOVERY was not overly good, Wilson Cruz was always excellent. He was one of the show’s best assets.

Culber was one of the only characters that they got right from the start.

The only characters I loved from their introduction until the end (not counting the TOS/SNW crew) were Culber, Reno, Lorca, Mudd, L’Rell, Kovich, and Voq-Tyler. I really liked Saru and Stamets before the time jump, but after the jump the writers lost their story and they faded into the background. And while Book and Vance were great in season three, after that they became superfluous.

I couldn’t really connect to any of the other characters. Burnham was beyond annoying, Gray was horribly acted, and Georgiou was boring. Tilly was fun in principle, and there were episodes in which I enjoyed her, but the writers couldn’t seem to decide how to write for her–her character was all over the place. As for Adira, the bridge crew, and Nhan, none of them ever really had a chance to shine. Disco had so much potential, but for me (and others’ mileage will of course vary) it almost never lived up to it. The 23rd-century seasons are the only ones I’ll likely rewatch.

He’s a good actor, given almost nothing to work with. Not sure what was “challenging” for him about season 5, apart from having to put on a voice for one episode.

Yeah, that was kind of weird. He really didn’t have any challenging work in season 5.

The sooner you stop writing about Discovery the sooner we can forget it existed. It’s The Acolyte of Star Trek universe.

I’m no fan of Discovery, but… lol the internet summed up in one post ^

Dr. Culber, Captain Burnham, Suru, and Book… These are my favorite characters from Star Trek: Discovery and in that order. So, I’m really going to miss Dr. Culber and would love for him to pop up in some other Star Trek show or movie. For me he is a dream of Star Trek character. And Wilson is a dreamy human and actor. (Nerdy side note: I’m glad by the end it was clear he is CMO (and Counselor). It was starting to get a little disrespectful for our first queer doctor in Star Trek.)
