Fordson High seniors come together for prom after journey that began during pandemic

Fordson High School senior MohamedAli Bazzi lifts and twirls his prom date Narmeen Dakouche as they share a slow dance while other seniors line the dance floor after they were announced the king and queen during their senior prom held at the Bellagio Banquet And Conference Center in Dearborn Heights on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

For seniors at Fordson High School, prom was more than a chance to step out in stylish colorful suits and dresses. It was a chance to come together.

These students started high school in the fall of 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. They helped each other deal with life, inside and outside school. And now, they're ready to celebrate.

“We didn't have a freshman year, which messed up our relationships we could have built with upperclassman,” said senior class president Lena Dabaja.

During the pandemic, these students learned how quickly life can take a turn. So Dabaja and her classmates put on over 20 fundraisers to help make this year’s prom a Hollywood experience for all.

“We all stood by each other and helped one another,” she said. “We're really like family. I don't think there's ever been a Fordson class that loves and supports each other the way we do.”

Some seniors' parents are recent immigrants, and prom wasn't part of their tradition, or something they'd even necessarily heard of.

Like senior Hilal Baalbaki, the first from his family to attend a prom, and excited to have the opportunity.

But after he was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma in January 2024, Baalbaki knew his chances of attending any event his senior year were low.

“I thank God for everything he’s blessed me with, and all he’s given me to be here and to celebrate with my friends,” he said.

Baalbaki says he missed a large portion of his high school experience, not only battling cancer, but also working toward his future while taking college courses through Henry Ford College.

He had to learn to walk again after being immobilized in the hospital for a month, but now, after going through treatments for cancer, he has 80% fewer tumors in his body — although his doctors told him to social distance due to his weakened immune system. “I was very happy at the fact that I was able to experience at least part of it,” he said about the culmination of his high school years. “It’s important to enjoy your last years of school, because it’s a big achievement.”

“It’s a sad moment. I cry,” said Manal Hammoud, a parent/community liaison and senior class adviser for the school. “It’s our last moment together.”

Hammoud started working at Fordson during the graduating class' freshman year, witnessing their four-year journey. On prom night, her face lit up, watching the students from the stage.

“I watch them in awe. It's good to see them take that moment, that they can have and cherish forever,” she said.

As the night carried on, students showed their appreciation for Hammoud and other faculty members, inviting them to take part in the high-energy celebration, dancing to a mixture of hit songs and traditional music. “At night, when I have to shut it down, that's the worst part," said Hammoud.

Soon, these students' lives will change as they head off in different directions, but on prom night, they enjoyed every last minute together as a group. “I've always dreamt of prom. It's the end of a chapter, and now we're opening up a new chapter, and it's something I'm so excited for,” senior Nour Choucair said. “We're all going to move on to bigger and better things, so we'll see what happens.”

Bergen County seniors will get better access to activities, work with help of task force

2-minute read.

journey senior services

An age-friendly task force, the first of its kind in the state, has been established in Bergen County.

Bergen County has been making strides to create “age-friendly” communities since 1966 with the establishment of the Division of Senior Services, said county Executive James Tedesco. In 2022, the county became the second in the state to be designated as an AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.

The Age-Friendly Task Force will advise local government officials on ways to enhance communities and make sure seniors, who make up 20% of the county's population, have access to the services and resources necessary to age in place.

The task force members will make sure the county's older residents have access to recreational and cultural activities, opportunities to participate in social and civic engagement, the promotion of employment and volunteerism and access to comprehensive health care.

“This task force is a testament to the county’s commitment to addressing the diverse needs of our residents,” said Tedesco. “Together, we are promoting a higher quality of life and creating a community where our seniors can age in place with dignity, independence, and respect.”

"This task force represents a significant step forward in our commitment to creating communities that support the health, well-being, and independence of our aging population," said county Commissioner Chairwoman Germaine Ortiz.

The task force will have eight to 14 members, including a representative from the Office of the County Executive, the director of Bergen County Department of Health Services, the director of the Division of Community Transportation, and the director of the Division of Senior Services, or their designee, as well as a director of both a small-mid size age-friendly community and a large size AARP community within Bergen County, a representative from higher education within Bergen County, two representatives from either a non-profit government organization that has programming that impacts our senior population that manages or operates housing/or transportation/or health care programs and a member of the Bergen County Board of Commissioners as designated by the chair of the board.

The inaugural members of the Task Force include:

  • Helen Archontou, CEO of YWCA of Northern New Jersey
  • Dr. Hansel Asmar, Department of Health Bergen County
  • Dominick Azzolini, director of Community Transportation
  • Lisa Bontemps, Westwood for All Ages
  • Elizabeth Davis, Bright Side Family and Age-Friendly Teaneck

Individuals seeking to depart Gaza: As of May 7, the Israel Defense Forces control the Gaza side of the Rafah Crossing. Since that day, the Rafah Crossing between Egypt and Gaza has remained closed. As soon as the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem receives information regarding new exit procedures from Gaza to Egypt, including when crossings resume, we will communicate this to the public immediately.

This remains a complex situation with serious implications for the safety and security of U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens in Gaza in need of assistance should contact [email protected] . U.S. citizens in Gaza are reminded that the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Gaza as U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling there.

The U.S. government does not control who is permitted to depart Gaza or enter Egypt. Individuals must assess their own safety and risks in attempting to cross the border. Individuals permitted to enter Egypt will likely receive a 72-hour Egyptian visa; all those who cross should have a plan for onward travel from Egypt in this timeframe. U.S. citizens, LPRs and their immediate family members who successfully enter Egypt and require further consular assistance should contact the  U.S. Embassy in Cairo  via the  U.S. Citizens Services Navigator .  Individuals may apply for a U.S. visa at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate; U.S. immigration laws and regulations will apply.

We continue to work in partnership with Egypt and Israel towards safe passage for U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members.

Immediate family members of U.S. citizens include:

  • unmarried children under the age of 21, and
  • parents of U.S. citizens.

If the U.S. citizen is under 21, immediate family will also include any siblings who are also unmarried and under 21.

Immediate family members of LPRs include:

  • unmarried children under 21 years of age.

She has utilized all the information at her disposal to marry her business leadership skills with CNN’s mission and great journalism and plans to continue to do that in her future endeavors.”

Smolkin’s last day will be July 3, and she will start in her new role in September.

Moseley’s full memo is below:

I’m writing to share the news that Rachel Smolkin has decided to leave CNN next month to pursue another opportunity that she will announce later today.

In the last several years, while continuing to oversee global news coverage and teams across CNN’s digital platforms, many of you know that Rachel pursued and earned an MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. She has utilized all the information at her disposal to marry her business leadership skills with CNN’s mission and great journalism and plans to continue to do that in her future endeavors.

Rachel’s last day will be July 3. We are working on a transition plan, so please direct any questions or communications to me in the interim.

Please join me in thanking Rachel for 10 years of dedicated service and wishing her the very best in her next chapter.
