  • Impressive interior design and quality of materials
  • Generous passenger space
  • Comfortable and supportive seats
  • Quiet interior
  • User interface is overcomplicated and unintuitive
  • Trunk space and interior storage are exceptionally scarce
  • Less powerful and less efficient engines than many rivals
  • Unsatisfying steering and handling characteristics

What's new

  • Revised front and rear styling
  • Interior updated with new tech, new seats and various other upgrades
  • Trim line reduced from 10 variants to three
  • Sportbrake wagon variant no longer available
  • Part of the second XF generation introduced for 2016

The 2021 Jaguar XF is the brand's midsize luxury sedan. It's actually Jag's only sedan, too — the company discontinued the larger XJ after the 2019 model year and killed the smaller XE after 2020. The XF is based on the most recent redesign that happened way back for 2016, though the 2021 car does get a few updates.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2021 Jaguar XF P250 S 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.78 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

The previously available supercharged V6 is gone, as is the cool Sportbrake station wagon. A new S model serves as the XF's base trim, and it comes loaded with a more comprehensive set of features than before. In fact, the entire lineup is less expensive than last year, and even the top-level SE R-Dynamic costs less than last year's entry-level model. You can still load up the XF with options to your heart's content, but doing so is a more affordable proposition this time around.

Other enhancements include a more traditionally shaped shifter to replace the pop-up rotary transmission selector, reconfigured cushioning for the seats, and revised exterior styling. The biggest change is with the infotainment system, which outgrows its integrated housing and looks like a stuck-on tablet. It's loaded with Jaguar's new Pivi Pro infotainment system, which Jaguar says is quicker, more intuitive and easier to use than the previous interface.

Unfortunately, we've found the Pivi Pro interface to still be convoluted and hard to use. The XF also comes up short on cargo space and performance compared to other top midsize sedans such as the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. If you're considering an XF, you'll want to check out our Expert Rating below to get our full take on the car's hits and misses.

features & specs

The 2022 jaguar xf banks on its heritage to steer drivers out of german four-doors—but does it with an ordinary turbo-4..

What kind of car is the 2022 Jaguar XF? What does it compare to?

The 2022 XF sedan layers luxury heritage and finishes over its mid-size proportions. The four-door sedan offers drivers of the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class a choice of a British badge on a car that’s, at its core, very Germanic.

Is the 2022 Jaguar XF a good car?

The XF drives with brisk and brusque acceleration and handling somewhere between poised and relaxed. It’s beautiful, with a revamped interior trimmed in wood and cutting-edge displays. We’ve given it a TCC Rating of 6.6 out of 10 in the past, and stick with that grade as the XF heads toward a likely finale in 2023. ( Read more about how we rate cars .)

What's new for the 2022 Jaguar XF?

Not much. The XF comes in P250 S and P250 SE editions that have rear-wheel drive, while the R-Dynamic SE has a more powerful engine and all-wheel drive.

With the XE and XJ sedans sent to the archives, the 2022 XF soldiers on as the sole sedan from the British brand. It’s a sleek machine, with cat’s-eye headlights, a trim upright grille, and big front-end air intakes that blend into a purposeful and tasteful shape, with a coupe-like roofline. The XF doesn’t have the sense of drama imbued in the former XJ, but neither does it live in the styling doldrums like the XE. Inside, the story’s much improved from its initial years on the market: Jaguar re-trimmed the interior a year ago with more traditional controls and a bit of wood trim to liven up what was a dark, Teutonic-themed cabin. It also glows with an 11.4-inch touchscreen that sports an infotainment interface that lives up to its pixel count, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Last year Jaguar snipped the V-8 and V-6 engines from the XF family. It’s down to a 246-hp turbo-4, or an uprated version with 296 hp. We haven’t driven the former “P250” version, but the R-Dynamic’s 2.0-liter turbo-4 ushers in a strong gust of acceleration at launch, dropping 0-60 mph times from 6.5 to 5.8 seconds, according to Jaguar. It’s accompanied by a fair amount of grainy, hollow-sounding engine noise, though it pairs well with the quick-shifting 8-speed automatic.

The glories of the old V-8 are gone; Jaguar’s new inline-6 sounds smoother and would be an ideal companion here, but it’s unlikely to happen before the XF hits the British equivalent of The Villages. But handling is still a high-water mark for the Jaguar sedan, thanks to a buttery ride and direct, accurate steering. There’s more body lean here than in a German-badged rival, but that’s apropos to Jaguar’s past. It’s agile, not punishing, despite 19-inch wheels and slim-profile tires.

EPA ratings reach as high as 25 mpg city, 33 highway, 28 combined.

The XF’s cabin now has the luster it didn’t get when it was launched in 2016. Flat but ultimately supportive front bucket seats clad in leather can adjust at least 12 ways, and the XF’s rear seat holds two adults across its bench with enough knee and shoulder room. Head room isn’t as generous, and three abreast will get to know each other a little better. The XF’s trunk of 17.8 cubic feet will hold a few roll-aboards. Along with the richer trim—aluminum, contrast-stitched seats, and open-pore wood—the XF has reinstalled a gearshift lever to replace the former rotary dial, and new climate controls place digital readouts inside their rotating dials.

No crash-test data exists, but the XF has automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system. Jaguar upsells adaptive cruise control as well.

How much does the 2022 Jaguar XF cost?

The base P250 S costs $46,450 and comes with the 11.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, leather upholstery, wireless smartphone charging, 12-speaker Meridian sound, and 18-inch wheels. The R-Dynamic’s $52,150 sticker price adds heated side mirrors and a sport suspension. All XF models come with a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty with complimentary service.

Is the 2024 Jaguar XF a Good Car?

Yes, the 2024 XF is a good car, but it is beginning to look dated in a highly competitive segment. In addition to its expertly crafted interior, the XF delivers ample passenger room, a decent amount of cargo space, a smooth ride and handling that instills confidence. While its two available engine configurations are decently potent and efficient, they lack a certain thrill factor. Additionally, the cabin, while upscale, could benefit from more lavish features to elevate its appeal.

Should I Buy the 2024 Jaguar XF?

The XF's innate style and lengthy standard features list help it stand out in the luxury midsize car class . However, several rivals present more comprehensive packages. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class boasts a superior interior, a smoother ride and an array of high-performance models. Similarly, the BMW 5 Series delivers sportier handling and powerful, race-inspired editions. However, both the E-Class and 5 Series have substantially higher base prices than the Jaguar.

2023 vs. 2024 Jaguar XF: What's the Difference?

How Much Is a 2024 Jaguar XF?

The 2024 Jaguar XF starts at $49,800 for the R-Dynamic SE P250 trim. It comes standard with features like 19-inch wheels, 12-way heated and power-adjustable front seats, synthetic leather upholstery and adaptive cruise control. The R-Dynamic P300 ($53,500) has similar interior and exterior features, but it comes with a more potent version of the turbocharged engine, as well as all-wheel drive.

Which Is the Best Jaguar XF Model to Buy?

Most XF buyers will find the R-Dynamic SE P250 to be the most cost-effective choice. It has virtually all of the comfort and convenience features of the R-Dynamic SE P300, including keyless entry, a power-operated trunk lid and a Meridian audio system. The key difference is the powertrain: 246 horsepower and rear-wheel drive for the P250 versus the 296-horsepower all-wheel-drive P300. 2024 Jaguar XF Versus the Competition

Jaguar xf vs. genesis g80.

The Genesis G80 surpasses the XF with a more sumptuous interior, more robust engine choices and a longer list of standard comfort, technology and driver-assistance features. Many will find the Jaguar’s Pivi Pro infotainment system easier to use than the G80's interface, and the XF P250 offers better fuel economy. With more trunk space and a plusher cabin, the Genesis emerges as the superior all-around package.

Compare the XF and Genesis G80 »

Jaguar XF vs. Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is arguably the pinnacle of opulence in the luxury midsize car class . It boasts a posh interior adorned with high-end materials, and it offers sophisticated infotainment tech. Its high-performance variants, notably the 603-horsepower Mercedes-AMG S 63 E, far surpass the enthusiast option available in the XF. The Jaguar is less expensive than the E-Class by a considerable margin, but if your budget allows, the Mercedes is the better choice overall.

XF Performance: Purr-fectly Fine

2024 xf engine.

The 2024 Jaguar XF is available with two turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The base R-Dynamic SE P250 delivers 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, while the R-Dynamic SE P300’s turbo-four generates 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission known for its smooth shifts.

With either engine choice, the XF delivers ample power for urban driving and freeway merging and passing. The 296-horsepower iteration exhibits quicker acceleration, clocking in at a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.8 seconds, according to Jaguar. In a segment filled with enthusiast versions, no high-performance engine alternatives are offered.

2024 XF Gas Mileage

The 2024 Jaguar XF offers good fuel economy but not class-leading. The P250 variant is EPA-rated to get 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Models with the more potent turbo-four and all-wheel drive are estimated to get 21/29 mpg city/highway.

2024 XF Ride and Handling

The XF offers excellent ride-and-handling dynamics. Its low center of gravity, well-engineered suspension and nicely calibrated steering endow the XF with positive driving dynamics. The XF is up to some serious canyon carving, and its suspension prevents road imperfections from becoming obtrusive in the cabin. The XF is fun to drive thanks to its confident handling.

This 2024 XF review combines multiple professional reviews with concrete data like performance specs, fuel economy estimates and safety ratings and incorporates applicable research for all models in this generation, which launched for 2016. Check out excerpts from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

"The XF's interior is just as lovely-looking as its exterior, and there's a reasonable amount of tech baked into the design, but it's here where the XF shows its age. Rivals such as the BMW 5-series, the Genesis G80, and the Mercedes-Benz E-class all sit closer to the cutting edge."

"It captures all of the Jaguar brand hallmarks with distinct British styling, an elegant interior, and engaging performance all in a pretty practical sedan."

"The XF is overflowing with English luxury charm, even if it isn't as well rounded as some of its competitors. Just look at the thing; its simple, elegant sheetmetal and sporty stance are fitting of a Jaguar."

In this episode of The Grand Tour ,  Jeremy, James, and Richard take three old Jaguars on a quest to prove that they are indeed reliable. And they do end up doing one thing very reliably: breaking down.

The Trio Drive Three Jaguars

jaguar xf grand tour

The film begins with the presenters’ choice of Jag: Clarkson a V8 XJR, James an XK8 convertible, and Richard a 1967 Mark X 420G. It’s a hilarious segment from the get-go with Hammond toolkit stealing a lot of the laughs.

The three Jaguars are then placed on a dirt track set against a staggering mountain backdrop to test their handling capabilities, and James quickly sets a lap record for the fastest Jaguar XK8 lap around that track. Based on how quietly Jeremy’s car runs, it’s either grown a set of electric motors or it’s stuck in overdrive. Hammond’s car immediately begins to smoke like its owners did when it was new, and the boot lid and rear window are promptly and badly broken, but it’s quickly mended and he even finds time to A) install a sunroof and B) buy a new car.

Incredibly, Hammond manages to destroy Jag #2 within an hour of leaving the hotel, through no fault of the rock-solid Jag’s. He’s soon back on the move, only to catch up with Clarkson, at the side of the road having a friendly chat with a cop, and is rescued by none other than the queen. Hammond’s car puts on an a display of spraying coolant worthy of Caesar’s Palace, and we even get a humorous interjection from a native in a Suburban.

At the Telluride airport, the challenge is to reach 100 and brake before plummeting off the cliff at the end. Clarkson just manages it, and Hammond does too, despite nearly becoming the second time we’ve seen him plummet off a cliff in a ball of fire, stopping nearly half a mile farther than Clarkson. Because there needs to be at least one contrived, super-staged joke, James falls off the cliff and ends up in an XJS miraculously unharmed, making Clarkson the only one still driving the car he started with.

The cars later obstinately refuse to do skiing, and thus need to be shackled together by some massive poles to climb the mountain like some majestic Jaguar centipede. At the top of the mountain, the cars are separated, and begin the treacherous journey down the mountain.

Eventually, gravity stops doing the work, and the cars must be carefully piloted along to the massive, sheer drop, before another massive hill takes them to the bottom of the mountain (despite Hammond losing some big bits of car).

Celebrity Face-Off

jaguar xf grand tour

In Celebrity Face-Off, two actors whose middle names are George (Luke Evans and Kiefer Sutherland) take to the track in the F-Type. We learn that Jason Statham has gone through over 140 million pounds’ worth of cars in the  Fast and Furious  movies, and that Sutherland once owned a Mustang with so little power that it was quite literally stopped by a robust wind. Sutherland turns a 1:17.8, smashing Evans’ 1:21.3, putting the former near the top of the board.

Despite not having a review segment or really any films but the Colorado trip, this is easily one of the show’s strongest episodes. The first half is generally stellar, with well-timed jokes that don’t take it too far and incredible cinematography of the Colorado mountains and plateaus. The jokes where the presenters end up in different cars come off in the final product less torturously than thought, and the only real misstep is James’ cliffside flight. The weakest episodes are most often buried mid-season, exemplified by the show before this. That definitely wasn’t the case here.

The Grand Tour episode 12 is the best in the series so far

By Ally Heath

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Car and Automobile

The Grand Tour episode 12, coming again from the shores of Loch Ness , focused its attention on a three-way comparison between a trio of British SUVs. An excellent film consisting of the new Jaguar F-Pace, the huge Bentley Bentayga and the ever-present Range Rover .

They weave their way between Austria and Germany, enjoying a route through sleazy towns whose names they might struggle with during their BBC reign, but under their own license, they relish in being naughty. Their lustful journey starts at "Wank" which Jeremy pronounces dutifully using the German enunciation, of "Vank" and they head onto the town of "Fucking". You can sense the teenager still living in all of them – trying not to chuckle, like the day in the back of the classroom when they discovered there was a place in France called "Brest".

It's an interesting trio of cars and they are happy partners in a joyous combined test. The film is enjoyable, the company is entertaining, and the final race between them is stunningly shot and invigorating to watch.

Each of the three cars are fascinating cars in their own way and seeing them on the same scale makes them all the more intriguing. It's worth noting that the top spec F-Pace Hammond drives is cheaper than the extras alone on James' Bentayga.

The engine of the mighty Bentayga is a almighty 6.0 W12 complete with twin turbos. Despite weighing well over two tonnes, it builds speed at a remarkable rate. Slice that engine in half and you have the dimensions of the Jaguar, a 3 litre V6 growler with a supercharger. With aluminium weight saving applied to the Jag’s chassis, it's seriously quick and nimble too. Power and speed is one thing, but little prepares you for seeing these beasts fly and achieve air during their wonderful racing laps.

The Bentayga at first seemed like a clumsy accident, but as GQ accurately predicted at the time of its launch, the Bentley seems to have grown into it.

However, the other two wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the success of the old Range Rover. Let’s not forget, the Range Rover wasn’t designed to attractive a wealthy elite and footballers who wanted chic, understated luxury and prowess on the road – it just happened that those audiences decided to love it anyway. And so all the competitors followed, trying to get a slice of the same audience, now they knew what that audience liked.

This is why the Range Rover is the real winner. It was designed not for a target audience, but for a purpose. To climb any mountain and ford any stream, without sacrificing any comfort or ability on the road. It’s the original. It’s stayed true to its ethos and really can achieve anything off-road, as the Grand Tour trio demonstrated.
