And if you will have 24 to 72 hours Istanbul stay, than you are very lucky that you can explore all of the city’s sights and sounds very effectively.

If you have only one day or less to spend in Istanbul, the best way to get the most out of the city is to visit the famous Sultanahmet neighborhood and see the couple of Istanbul’s must-see sights there. Sultanahmet will sure give you the ultimate Istanbul experience in a nutshell.

We also recommend you to visit the Galata and Taksim neighborhoods , the modern part of the city.

Cruise Ship Passenger Itinerary : 6 hours

You will only need to take a tram as for transportation, for our Istanbul cruise ship passenger tour itinerary. So get an IstanbulKart that you can have access all the public transportation network of Istanbul.

One ride is only 4,03 TL (about €0,4), and you can obtain this card (with 13 TL initial fee) at the ticket machines at any tram station near the Istanbul Cruise port.

Stop-1 -> Sultanahmet Square (1,5 hours)

Your cruise ship boarded at Galataport and you’re free to go now! You are just in the heart of Istanbul, no need for a shuttle or transfer for the city center.

Head up to Tophane tram stop on foot, take tram to Sultanahmet . After about 20 minutes, you are now by the Sultanahmet Square , one of the most tourist area of the city with loads of historic sights such as mosques, churches, museums, etc.

Once being a Byzantium hippodrome from the 4th century, the square itself hosts the famous historic places and sights that include; the Egyptian Obelisk , the  Serpentine Column , the  Colossus  or the  Column of Costantine Porphyrgenitus  and the  German Fountain .

Enjoy the sights and sounds here (about 1 hour) and make sure you visit at least one of these greatest sights of the city, by entering inside: Hagia Sophia Museum (1 hour), Topkapi Palace Museum (1,5 hours), Blue Mosque (45 minutes), Istanbul Archaeology Museums (1 hour), Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts (1 hour), and Basilica Cistern (45 minutes). We recommend Hagia Sophia .

For the other museums and sights, you don’t have enough time to explore them all, and even looking the other sights from the outside will be a unique experience in itself.

Before you head up to Hagia Sophia, you can have a rest for 15 minutes, and try Turkish coffee or any other drinks at the several good cafes around the Sultanahmet Square.

Stop-2 -> Hagia Sophia Museum (1 hour)

You’ll feel hungry after the Hagia Sophia tour. You can find loads of tourist cafes and restaurants along the Sultanahmet Square and along the tram road.

We’d recommend Historical 1920 Sultanahmet Koftecisi  (Divan Yolu Str., No: 12) to taste the delicious grills meat balls and the sweet Semolinacake . Expect to spend about €8,00 a person for this menu.

Stop-3 -> Taksim & Istiklal Street (1,5 hours)

Take the tram from Sultanahmet to Kabatas (20 minutes – last stop), and there take the funicular (5 minutes) to reach Taksim .

You’are now in the famous Taksim Square . Take some photos along the square and start your walking tour along the Istiklal Street .

Istiklal Street is probably the most famous street and entertainment area in Istanbul. It is a long colorful pedestrian street full of all kind of shops, restaurants, cafes and street shows.

You can visit one of these sights by entering inside: Madame Tussauds Wax Museum  (30 minutes), the amazing St. Anthony of Padua Church (30 minutes) and Pera Museum (30 minutes). We recommend St.Anthony of Padua Church .

You’ll finish off Istiklal Street heading Tunel Square (end of the Istiklal Street) and walking downhill from the Galip Dede ramp until you reach the Galata Tower .

You’ll find and enjoy variety of lovely craft, souvenir and music shops as well as a couple of art galleries along the Galip Dede ramp .

Stop-4 -> Galata Tower (1 hour)

Galata Tower , topped with a distinctive witch’s-hat roof, is one of the most impressive and popular landmarks in Istanbul. Dating back to 14th century, the tower is an old Genoese tower overlooking the city that rises to a height of 72 meters above its base.

Galata Tower serves as a popular tourist sight, that its  observatory deck has a 360 degrees view of Istanbul . There are two elevators in the entrance that takes you to the top. You’ll find amazing views of the Historical Peninsula, Golden Horn and Bosphorus on top that encompasses Istanbul. Take photos, as much as you can.

You can spend here about  30 to 45 minutes .

From the Galata Tower, you can stroll along the sweet narrow streets with variety of shops, take photos, and walk another 15 minutes along the coast to get back to the cruise port.

After Dinner & Night-time Activities

If you have an overnight stay, or have enough time for the evening activities, you can;

* Have a snack or drink in one of the rooftop restaurants and cafes in Galata and Karakoy neighborhood, along with the beautiful views of Bosphorus.

* Finish the night in one of the taverns, bars or restaurants at the Nevizade or Asmalimescit , along Istiklal Street in Taksim with a Turkish cuisine.

* Or spend the night in one of the music clubs , bars or pubs in the Galata or Taksim neighborhood.

Keep in mind that should be around Galata or Karakoy as to access the port on foot in about 15-20 minutes.

How to get from the Cruise Port to the City Center?

You are lucky that Istanbul’s current temporary Cruise port is located in the heart of the city, very close, within walking distance to all popular sights and sounds of the historic center of the city. The best way to get to the Istanbul major tourist zones, which are Sultanahmet, Galata and Taksim, is to take the Bagcilar-Kabatas tram (T1 line)  or taking public buses.

You can also catch a taxi , but this will definitely be the most expensive way, although you will feel comfortable in getting back your cruise on time.

Istanbul is a major port city in Turkey, as well as the country's most populous and its historic, cultural and economic center. The city covers a total area of approx 1539 km2 (594 mi2) and has population around 14,1 million (metro around 14,8 million).

Historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul is a transcontinental city (located in both Europe and Asia) and straddling Bosphorus Strait between Black Sea and Marmara Sea (Eastern Mediterranean). The city's historical and commercial downtown is on the European side, and around 1/3 of its population is on the Asian side. Istanbul Metro is one of the world's most populous cities - ranked 7th-largest (city proper) and Europe's largest - followed by Moscow (Russia) and London (UK) . It also has one of world's fastest-growing metro economies.

Established under the name of Byzantion (around 660 BC), the city developed to become one of the most prominent in European history. After the reestablishment as Constantinople (330 CE), the city served as the imperial capital for nearly 16 centuries. The period included the Roman (330-1204), Byzantine (1261–1453), Latin (1204–1261) and Ottoman (1453–1922) empires. During Roman and Byzantine times, it was Christianity's second most important city (after Rome ), before in 1453 the Ottomans conquered and transformed it into an Islamic stronghold and Ottoman Caliphate's capital.

Istanbul has a strategic position on the Silk Road (rail networks from China to Middle East and Europe) and is also on the only sea route between Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. Its population has increased tenfold since the 1950s. Music, film, cultural and arts festivals were established at the end of 20th century and continue to be hosted today. Infrastructure improvements and redevelopments have produced a complex transportation network.

Currently, Istanbul is ranked the world's 8th most popular tourist travel destination (as city), while Turkey is ranked the world's 6th (as country). Its biggest attraction is the historic downtown (partially listed as UNESCO Site), as well as entertainment and cultural venues (across the Golden Horn/natural harbor in Beyoglu district). Most tourists arrive via flights, but ~0,5 million foreigners arrive by ships/yachts annualy.

Port Istanbul

Port Istanbul (locode TRIST) as cruise port is both homeport (departure/turnaround) and call port, visited mainly as part of Eastern Mediterranean/Aegean Sea itineraries. Most voyages start in Italy ( Venice ) or Greece ( Piraeus-Athens ).

Some of the world's largest cruise brands with European seasonal programs - like Uniworld (river cruisetours packages combining flights to/from Istanbul), RCI-Royal Caribbean . Princess - were the first to drop Turkish ports (including Istanbul) from their 2016-2017-2018 schedules. These companies were soon followed by Celebrity , Azamara , Cunard , Holland America, P&O UK . All ports of call in Turkey were replaced by Greek Islands port destinations.

In 2015, the cruise port in Karakoy was closed down due to construction works for the new Galataport. The tourists' decline resulted in many street businesses closing down as tradesmen lost nearly 90% of their businesses in comparison to 2015. In 2016, the number of foreign tourists to Turkey decreased by 32% (down to 17,4 million) over 2015. There was a significant decrease in arrivals from Western- and Asian countries and from Russia. On June 6, 2019, Istanbul's Sarayburnu Port welcomed its first cruise vessel in 4 years - Seven Seas Voyager - operated by RSSC-Regent.

Turkey (previously a hugely popular travel and leisure/resort destination) was subject to a number of deadly terrorist attacks in 2016 and 2017. In June 2016, an Istanbul airport attack (shootings and suicide bombings) resulted in 42 deaths. In December 2016, a twin bomb attack outside a football stadium killed 38. There was also a shooting in the Reina nightclub (Ortakoy district of Istanbul) in January 2017 resulting in 39 dead and 69 injured.

In early-November 2018, CCL-Carnival Cruise Lines and RCI-Royal Caribbean International placed bids for the tendering operations of Istanbul's Port Yenikapı. Both companies are interested in building a new cruise port in Istanbul (as build/operate/transfer project) and intend to turn Istanbul into a Mediterranean cruise hub. CCL and RCI are represented here by Tura Tourism (a Turkish sales agency).

The Galataport project was initially scheduled for completion in March 2020. However, due to the Coronavirus crisis, the project was delayed and the cruise port was inaugurated in August 2021. The modern facility was planned for annual capacity ~1,5 million and daily capacity ~15,000 (passengers and crew). The largest cruise companies with booked berthing were RCI, Holland America, Marella UK , RSSC-Regent Seven Seas , Ponant , Silversea , Fred Olsen , Windstar , Celestyal .

Istanbul cruise terminal

Istanbul cruise port terminals are located near Galata Tower. Cruise ships dock at Karaköy Yolcu Salonu passenger terminal (at Beyoglu's southern tip). The terminal is located in Karakoy (Galata), on the waterfront of Bosphorus Strait. This whole area was redeveloped into the new Galataport cruise ship terminal complex.

Istanbul cruise port terminal is right in downtown (in close proximity to major tourist attractions) and approx 20 km / 12 mi (or 25-min) away from Ataturk Airport.

Cruise ships generally arrive in Istanbul and dock at the Salı Pazarı terminal between 8:30-9 AM. After disembarkation, passengers arrive to the shoreline Meclis-i Mebusan boulevard. All the port's ship docking quays are along the shore - starting from Golden Horn's mouth and going northeastward to the districts Findikli and Tophane.

Near the port is the tram station Fındıklı from where you can cross Galata Bridge and go to some of the city's most popular tourist destinations - Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque), Topkapi, Eminonu (Spice Bazaar), Beyazit (Grand Bazaar), Karakoy (Galata Tower), Dolmabahce Palace (5-min walk from the tram's last stop), Taksim Square. Istiklal Avenue (city's most popular street).

From the cruise terminal, Galata Bridge is at 10-min walking distance. At Galata Bridge's northern end (across Golden Horn) is Karakoy - the city’s oldest district. Via an underground cable-car you can go from Karaköy to Tunnel Square, from where an easy walk leads to Istiklal Avenue.

Yolcu Salonu passenger terminal is capable to accommodate 4 cruise ships at a time. If there are more vessels, the dock at Salipazari Pier. The cruise terminal building has 3 halls with combined capacity 10,000 passengers.

Galata Port

Ä°stanbul's new cruise port "Galataport" project originated in 2001 as a redevelopment project that combines functions complementing Turkey's capital city as a center of tourism, commerce and culture. The project covers a land area of 0,1 km2 (0,04 mi2), where the existing buildings (at Karaköy Yolcu Salonu) were renovated - keeping their authentic forms but acquiring new functions.

By this project, the city's customs zone was transformed into a modern tourism complex consisting of an art museum, hotels, restaurants and bars, fast food venues, shopping malls, numerous souvenir shops, office buildings, exhibition areas, car parking facilities.

The following Galataport map shows the Atakoy–Bakırkoy district development project. This district is the city's most populated. The development (started in 2013) planned to provide high-end residential properties, including boat and yacht marinas. The total land area is approx 0,5 km2 (0,2 mi2). It features a well-developed city transportation network - highways, railways, the Atatürk Airport (at just 8 km / 5 mi).

Salı Pazarı cruise terminal was temporarily closed for restoration (2015-2021). The new Galataport cruise terminal was initially scheduled for opening in 2018 but was eventually postponed for August 2021.

In May 2017, to Galataport's masterplan was proposed a new concept combining a movable gangway with underground cruise passenger operations. The idea includes a hydraulic boardwalk deploying a gangway during ship calls only (when a vessel is docked). As space, the hydraulic system takes only 3,5 m of the boardwalk.

Galataport was jointly built by Dogus Group (one of Turkey's largest private-sector holdings) and Bilgili Holding (real-estate developer and tourism investor). With an investment of ~TL 14,07 billion (USD 1,7B / EUR 1,43B), this is one of the world's largest coastal and cruise port projects, with annual capacity ~25 million visitors (including ~7M tourists and ~1,5M cruisers).

• Galataport Cruise Terminal has berthing capacity of 3x liners (simultaneously docked) and ~15,000 passengers.
• The first cruise ship docking at Galataport (on September 25-26, 2021/overnight) was MS Eurodam ( HAL-Holland America Line ).
• Istanbul Galataport's facilities feature an underground cruise terminal (world’s first) sized 29000 m2 / 312155 ft2 which has a unique access/hatch system. During ship days (with docked ships) the cruise terminal converts the port into an esplanade.

Besides being a cruise port, Galataport serves mainly as a leisure destination offering domestic tourists and citizens entertainment and activities themed on gastronomy/modern and traditional Balkan cuisine, shopping, arts, culture, modern tourist attractions and amenities. Galataport also houses a new art museum (Istanbul Modern), Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, MSFAU (Museum of Painting and Sculpture), Tophane Square (Beyoglu district, with the mid-19th-century Tophane Clock Tower). More historical buildings also underwent restorations as part of the Galataport project - including Merkez Han, Karakoy Yolcu Salonu (passenger terminal), Karakoy Cinili Han, Peninsula Istanbul Hotel (2022-inaugurated).

• Galata Tower: half a kilometer away from Istanbul Cruise Port. Take a bird-eye view from the Galata Tower top. You will see the amazing modern part of Old Istanbul.
• Basilica Cistern: dates from the 6th century, one of the most romantic attraction.
• Aya Sofya: 4 km away from Istanbul Cruise Port. The extraordinary church dates from 6th century.
• Topkapi Palace: 3 km away from Istanbul Cruise Port. It is a must-see attraction. Topkapi used to be the home of many sultans generations. Discover the delicate kiosks, the lush green courtyards and the secretive harem.
• Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamam: located in the Sultanahmet Square . It was built in the 16th century for Roxelana, the wife of Suleiman the Magnificent. You can also visit more steamy bathhouses like Cemberlita, Sulemaniye and Galatasaray baths.
• Blue Mosque: 4 km away from Istanbul Cruise Port, just across Aya Sofya. The Blue Mosque was designed by Sedefkar Mehmed Aga and dates from the early years of the 17th century. It is surrounded by small lively park.
• Istanbul Archaeology Museums: great place with section for all the family.
• Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum: housed in the former Ibrahim Pasha Palace.
• Suleymaniye Mosque: designed for Suleiman the Magnificent by Sinan, a famous Ottoman architect.
• Taksim Square: two and a half kilometers away from Istanbul Cruise Port.
• Grand Bazar: take a 20 minutes walk from Istanbul Cruise Port to find almost everything at this marketplace.
• Dolmabahce Palace: 3 km away from Istanbul Cruise port. The stunning palace was constructed in the period 1843-1856 by the architect of Sultan Abdulmecid, Karabet Balyan.

Daily tours from Istanbul to Edirne (departures every 2 hours) are also offered. The distance is approx 210 km (130 mi). Bus travel time is around 2,5 hours.

A complete itinerary for 4 days in Istanbul (+ map with all must-see sights, the best Bosphorus cruise and how to skip the lines at Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque).

Istanbul is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Divided by the Bosphorus Strait, it is one of the few cities in the world that spans two continents – Europe and Asia. Istanbul, the city where East meets West, has a rich history dating back to the 7th century BCE. From majestic landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace to the bustling streets of the Grand Bazaar, every corner of the city tells a story.

The city served as the capital of three major empires: the Roman Empire (as Byzantium), the Byzantine Empire (as Constantinople), and the Ottoman Empire (as Istanbul). Today, Istanbul is a bustling metropolis with a population of over 15 million people. And despite not being the capital, it is the largest city in Türkiye.

Best 4-day Istanbul Itinerary

Istanbul is an incredible city that has to be visited at least once in a lifetime. With its rich history and vibrant culture, the city attracts 17 million tourists each year. However, planning your itinerary for a first-time visit to Istanbul might be a challenge. It’s a huge city with numerous important landmarks such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Galata Tower.

To help you get the most out of your time, I’ve put together this detailed itinerary for 4 days in Istanbul. It will allow you to see not just the main attractions but also some hidden gems, such as the Rüstem Pasa Mosque and the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum. I’ve also included the best places to try traditional Turkish cuisine, including kebabs, mezes, baklava and more.

4 Days in Istanbul Itinerary (for first-timers)

• Day 1: Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar, Baklava at Hafiz Mustafa 1864, Bosphorus Dinner Cruise
• Day 2: Topkapi Palace, Spice Bazaar, Süleymaniye Mosque, Whirling Dervishes Show
• Day 3: Dolmabahçe Palace, Galata Tower
• Day 4: Basilica Cistern, Istanbul Archaeological Museums

In my view, 4 days in Istanbul is the optimal amount of time to discover all the must-see attractions and get a taste of the city. You’ll also be able to enjoy a cruise on the Bosphorus and even experience a traditional Turkish bath. In case, your time is limited, I’ve included some tips on how to see Istanbul in 1, 2 or 3 days, right after this 4-day itinerary.

Tips on your 4-day Istanbul itinerary

Accommodation – choosing the right location to stay in Istanbul is very important, as it’s a huge city and you don’t want to spend hours on transportation. To make sure your hotel is conveniently located, check out my guide on where to stay in Istanbul .

My favourite place to stay in Istanbul : Hotel Amira Why : ideal location, 5min away from the Blue Mosque, but quiet at night What I like : delicious breakfast (especially the gözleme), rooftop bar with Sea of Marmara views

Sightseeing – I strongly recommend visiting Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Dolmabahce Palace, and Basilica Cistern as early in the morning as possible (and book skip-the-line tickets in advance). These places get very crowded with long queues as the day progresses.

Visiting a mosque – you need to dress modestly, or you may be denied entry. You should cover your shoulders and wear long dresses or trousers to cover your knees. Women must wear a headscarf to cover their hair, too. Also, you must remove your shoes before entering, as mosques typically have carpets covering the floors. You can either leave your shoes at the entrance or bring a bag to store them and take them with you, as I did. Furthermore, mosques are closed to tourists during prayer times, which changes according to the season (see the five daily prayer times here ).

Internet – consider renting a pocket WiFi , so you can easily navigate between places using Google Maps.

4 Days in Istanbul itinerary – Day 1

If you’ve been following my blog for some time, you’ll know that I always recommend breakfast spots (mostly bakeries) in my itineraries. Unfortunately, in Istanbul, I struggled to find any good bakeries. So, I ended up having breakfast at my hotel throughout my trip.

If you can start your day early, I suggest visiting the Blue Mosque before Hagia Sophia, as it opens half an hour earlier. Both attractions are very popular and the lines could be very long. And while you can purchase a skip-the-line ticket for Hagia Sophia, it’s not an option for the Blue Mosque as it’s free to visit.

Blue Mosque

08:30 AM – 09:10 AM

Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii in Turkish) is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks and a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture. Sultan Ahmet I commissioned the construction of the mosque in 1609. Completed in 1616, the mosque is famous for its distinctive six minarets , a feature that was uncommon at the time of its construction. Legend has it that the architect mistakenly thought the Sultan had requested altın minareler (golden minarets in Turkish) instead of altı minareler (six minarets).

The mosque gets its nickname from the stunning blue tiles decorating its interior walls. More than 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles display floral motifs including lilies, tulips, and roses.

The entrance to the Blue Mosque is free .

Unfortunately, I couldn’t see the mosque in its full splendour, as it was undergoing renovation during my visit.

Hagia Sophia

09:30 AM – 11:00 AM

Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) is the most impressive mosque in Istanbul . It was originally built as a Christian cathedral during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century AD. Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II converted the cathedral into a mosque by adding Islamic features such as minarets and mihrabs.

Hagia Sophia is renowned for its massive dome, measuring about 31 meters (102 feet) in diameter. It is covered with glittering gold mosaic tiles. Pay attention to the eight gold and black calligraphic discs, which bear the name of Allah, the prophet Muhammad, his two grandsons and four caliphs.

Make sure to visit the upper gallery, featuring the impressive Deesis Mosaic . The mosaic depicts Christ the Almighty seated on a throne, flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. From the upper gallery, you can also enjoy panoramic views of the Hagia Sophia.

You can also visit the mausoleums of Ottoman Sultans, located in the courtyard of the mosque.

Note, that starting from January 15th, 2024, Hagia Sophia implemented a separate policy for tourists and worshippers. If you’re not Muslim, access to the ground floor, reserved only for prayer, is restricted. As a tourist, you’re permitted to access only the upper gallery , where you can admire the stunning mosaics and enjoy views of the interior of the mosque.

If you can only visit one mosque in Istanbul, I strongly suggest choosing Hagia Sophia. Not only it is one of the world’s greatest monuments, but in my opinion, its interior is exceptionally beautiful.

Grand Bazaar

11:15 AM – 12:00 PM

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı) is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. It was established shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in the 15th century. The Grand Bazaar is a labyrinthine of covered streets and alleys, housing more than 4,000 shops. It’s impossible not to get lost!

You can find all kinds of goods and products here, from jewellery, textiles, and ceramics to leather goods, carpets, antiques, and souvenirs. For a quick tour of the Grand Bazaar, I recommend taking a stroll along Kapalıçarşı Caddesi, the widest street in the market. Note that the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays.

I suggest a brief visit to the market just for the experience. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for shopping, as in my opinion, half of the shops don’t offer quality products.

Lunch at Mivan Restaurant

12:15 PM – 01:45 PM

For lunch make your way to Mivan Restaurant . It’s a modern restaurant serving traditional Turkish cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the Inegol meatballs (İnegöl köfte), Adana kebab (Adana kebabı) and the pomegranate fresh juice.

Try baklava at Hafiz Mustafa 1864

02:00 PM – 03:00 PM

You’ll find baklava, a delicious traditional Turkish dessert, served in almost every restaurant. Yet, for an exceptional experience, I suggest visiting Hafiz Mustafa 1864 Beyazıt . Founded in 1864, it’s Istanbul’s oldest confectionery store , offering authentic Turkish desserts like baklava and künefe.

I ordered different types of baklava, all exceptional, but my favourites were the walnut princess baklava and the pistachio classic baklava. For a perfect combination pair these delicious desserts with some Turkish coffee or tea.

Bosphorus Dinner Cruise

Taking a Bosphorus cruise is a must while in Istanbul . I suggest scheduling it for your first day rather than saving it for the last, as the weather could be bad and ruin your experience.

I highly recommend this Bosphorus Dinner Cruise & Show (more than 16,000+ excellent reviews). It includes a 3-course meal with a traditional Turkish folk dancing show. You’ll enjoy magical views of Istanbul and get to see iconic landmarks such as Dolmabahçe Palace, the Galata Tower, and the Bosphorus Bridge.

I had the vanilla dondurma served atop baklava, which was a true delight. There is no sitting area available, but you can enjoy your dessert in the nice little courtyard of the nearby mosque.

Sokollu Mehmet Pasha Mosque

Although relatively small, compared to the Blue Mosque, Sokollu Mehmet Pasha Mosque is a hidden architectural gem. It was commissioned by Sokollu Mehmet Pasha, who served as the Grand Vizier during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Completed in 1572, the mosque is known for its exquisite İznik tiles, which decorate its interior.

In my opinion, it is one of the most charming small mosques in Istanbul and it’s definitely worth a quick look inside.

4 Days in Istanbul itinerary – Day 2

Topkapi palace.

09:00 AM – 11:40 AM

Topkapi Palace (Topkapı Sarayı) served as the primary residence and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years. Mehmet the Conqueror built the palace in the 15th century, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (Istanbul). About 30 sultans ruled from Topkapi Palace until the 19th century when Sultan Abdülmecid I moved the court to Dolmabahçe Palace.

The palace complex covers a vast area of courtyards, gardens, and buildings, linked by ceremonial gates. Its architectural style blends elements of Islamic, Byzantine, and Ottoman architecture. Topkapi Palace houses numerous artefacts, including treasures, weapons, clothing, and manuscripts belonging to the Ottoman sultans and their families. The most famous exhibits are the Topkapi Dagger and Spoonmaker’s Diamond, one of the largest cut diamonds in the world.

One of the most interesting sections of Topkapi Palace is the Harem, where the sultan’s wives, concubines, and children resided. It consists of a labyrinth of rooms and apartments, including the Sultan’s private quarters, the Apartments of the Valide Sultan, and the Courtyard of the Black Eunuchs. During its peak time, more than 300 concubines lived in the Harem! Note, that you need an extra ticket to visit the Harem , but I personally found it worth the price. In my opinion, the Harem was the most impressive section of the palace.

Overlooking the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus, and the Sea of Marmara, Topkapi Palace also offers breathtaking panoramic views of Istanbul.

Topkapi Palace is one of the largest palaces I’ve visited during my travels. I suggest allocating at least 2-3 hours if you want to explore everything thoroughly.

Lunch at Coffeetopia Eminönü

12:00 PM – 01:30 PM

For lunch make your way to Coffeetopia Eminönü . It’s a lovely coffee shop, offering delicious cakes and sandwiches as well. I suggest giving their San Sebastian cheesecake and the roast beef sandwich a try (both excellent). I enjoyed the food so much, that I ended up visiting the place twice during my stay in Istanbul.

Spice Bazaar

01:30 PM – 02:30 PM

The Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) dates back to the 17th century. It is also known as the Egyptian Bazaar, because it was built with the profits from the Ottoman Empire’s Egyptian territories. The bazaar features more than 80 shops, selling herbs, nuts, dried fruits, teas and sweets.

With its colourful stalls and rich scents of cinnamon and cardamom, I found it far more charming than the Grand Bazaar.

Süleymaniye Mosque

02:45 PM – 03:30 PM

Süleymaniye Mosque (Süleymaniye Camii) is one of the most impressive mosques in Istanbul along with Hagia Sophia and the Blues Mosque. Situated on a hilltop overlooking the Golden Horn, it offers stunning panoramic views of the city.

Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent commissioned the mosque in 1550. Completed in 1557, the Süleymaniye Mosque is considered one of the greatest achievements of the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. It features a massive central dome, which rises to a height of 53 meters (174 feet) and has a diameter of 27.5 meters (90 feet).

Adjacent to the mosque is the tomb of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent and his beloved wife, Hürrem Sultan (also known as Roxelana). Make sure to visit them, as I found them truly impressive, beautifully decorated with İznik Tiles.

Whirling Dervishes Show

Whirling dervishes are an integral part of Türkiye’s cultural heritage, and attending the famous Sema ceremony is a must when visiting Istanbul. The Whirling Dervishes trace their origins back to the teachings of the Persian mystic Rumi in the 13th century. Their mesmerising dance symbolises the spiritual journey towards enlightenment.

The Whirling Dervishes Show is not merely a performance but a sacred ritual known as the Sema ceremony. It begins with a series of prayers, invocations, and musical preludes, culminating in the whirling dance itself. Dressed in traditional white robes, tall hats (sikke), and long skirts, the dervishes spin gracefully in circles – a truly captivating sight!

You can catch the Whirling Dervishes Show at different locations around the city. Yet, I suggest experiencing it at the Hodja Pasha Culture Center . This beautifully restored 550-year-old Ottoman Turkish bath provides the ideal setting to immerse yourself in this famous dance.

Dinner at Turgut Kebab Restaurant

Finish your second day in Istanbul with a dinner at Turgut Kebab Restaurant . The traditional Turkish restaurant is situated just a short walk from the Blue Mosque. I particularly enjoyed the Lahmacun and the Urfa kebab (similar to the popular Adana Kebab but not so spicy).

Make sure you get a seat on the rooftop for a beautiful view of the Blue Mosque.

The mosque was commissioned by Rüstem Pasha, the Grand Vizier (prime minister) of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Rüstem Pasha was also the husband of Mihrimah Sultan, one of the daughters of Sultan Suleiman.

What sets the Rüstem Pasha Mosque apart is its exquisite interior decoration, particularly its extensive use of Iznik tiles . I was truly impressed by the interior and highly suggest visiting if you have 20 minutes to spare.

4 Days in Istanbul itinerary – Day 3

Dolmabahçe palace.

09:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Dolmabahçe Palace is an architectural masterpiece, that seamlessly blends traditional Ottoman elements with European Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. The construction of the palace began in 1843 during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid I and was completed in 1856. Dolmabahçe Palace served as the primary residence of the Ottoman sultans until the abolition of the Caliphate in 1924.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, spent his final days in the palace, where he died on November 10, 1938. His room has been preserved as a museum, offering insight into his life and legacy. When you visit his room, take note of the clocks, all of which show 09:05, the exact time of his death.

In contrast to Topkapi Palace and its exquisite Iznik tiles, you’ll find Dolmabahçe Palace lavishly decorated with gold and crystal. The palace boasts a total of 285 rooms, 44 halls and six hammams (Turkish baths) . With its crystal chandeliers, gilded ceilings, and marble staircases, it can compete with some of the most opulent European palaces, such as Versailles.

Unfortunately, skip-the-line tickets are not available I strongly suggest arriving before the opening hours to avoid long queues. Opt for Selamlık + Harem + Painting Museum Ticket , which gives you access to all sections of the palace.

Make sure to visit the Ceremonial Hall, where you’ll find the world’s largest Bohemian crystal chandelier. Also, due to its location on the shores of the Bosphorus, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Asian side of Istanbul.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Dolmabahçe Palace. In my view, it’s an essential addition to your Istanbul itinerary due to its grandeur and extravagance.

Lunch at Yiğit Sofram Gözleme ve Kahvaltı

12:00 PM – 02:00 PM

For lunch make your way to Yiğit Sofram Gözleme ve Kahvaltı . This restaurant serves the best menemen (scrambled eggs with tomatoes and peppers) and gözleme in Istanbul in my opinion. They also offer a fantastic Turkish breakfast, if you’re interested in trying it out.

If you’re craving something sweet after lunch, head to Noly Cihangir . They offer fantastic cakes and pastries, and their coffee is excellent as well. I especially liked the pistachio éclair and the lemon cake.

Galata Tower

02:30 PM – 03:30 PM

Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Istanbul . Its history traces back to the medieval period, beginning with its construction in the 14th century. The Genoese, a powerful maritime republic from Italy, built the Galata Tower as a defensive structure when they established a colony in Constantinople.

Initially named the Tower of Christ, it served multiple purposes over the centuries. One of its primary functions was to act as a watchtower and a defensive fortification, offering a strategic vantage point over the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus Strait, and the surrounding area. During the Ottoman period, it was used as a fire lookout tower and a prison.

Today, the main attraction of the Galata Tower is its observation deck. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of Istanbul and its historic landmarks, including the Golden Horn, Topkapi Palace, and the Hagia Sophia.

Unfortunately, skip-the-line tickets are unavailable (lines are lengthy, so be prepared for a wait) There are two lines: one for purchasing tickets and another for entering the attraction. You can take the lift to the top, however, you can only use the stairs to go down.

Dinner at Pera Antakya

For dinner make your way to Pera Antakya . Located a short walk away from Galata Tower, this restaurant offers traditional Turkish cuisine. I very much enjoyed their Tepsi kebabı (a minced meat kebab baked on a tray) and the baked village cheese with butter and garlic.

Basilica cistern.

Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarniç) is not only one of the most popular attractions in Istanbul but also one of the most unique. With a capacity of around 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cubic feet) of water, it is one of the largest surviving ancient cisterns in Istanbul .

Basilica Cistern was built during the Byzantine period, about the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I. It is supported by 336 marble columns, arranged in 12 rows of 28 columns each.

The most famous feature of the cistern is the two Medusa heads used as column bases. It’s believed that these heads, one positioned upside down and the other sideways, were repurposed from ruined temples around the Bosphorus.

I recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your booked time slot, as the lines are typically very long and chaotic. You’ll likely need about 40 minutes to see the attraction, but I’ve allowed some extra time in the itinerary, just in case due to the lines.

For lunch, make your way to Ararat Terrace Restaurant & Rooftop . This restaurant features some of the most scenic views of the Blue Mosque and Bosphorus Strait.

Istanbul Archaeological Museums

The Istanbul Archaeological Museums is a complex of three museums : the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Ancient Orient, and the Tiled Kiosk Museum. The museums house a vast collection of artefacts from various civilisations and cultures, including ancient Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Egypt, the Byzantine and the Roman Empires.

Some of the highlights include the 4th century Alexander Sarcophagus (depicting scenes from the life of Alexander the Great), the Sarcophagus of the Crying Women and the mosaic panels from the monumental Gate of Ishtar.

My favourite section was the Tiled Kiosk Museum , featuring various Islamic artefacts, such as ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and calligraphy. The highlight here is the 14th-century mihrab from Imaret Mosque in Karaman, located in Central Anatolia.

Dinner at Garden 1897 Restaurant

Finish the last day of this Istanbul itinerary with a dinner at Garden 1897 Restaurant . This Turkish restaurant features a charming garden, perfect for an intimate dinner . Garden 1897 specialises in Ottoman and Anatolian cuisines. I particularly enjoyed the grilled meatballs (Izgara Köfte) and the rice pudding (Fırın Sütlaç).

I visited this restaurant during my last day in Istanbul, and I regretted not trying the rice pudding earlier. It turned out to be one of the best desserts I had during my entire journey.

Experience a traditional turkish bath.

Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum is one of Istanbul’s hidden gems . It occupies the former palace of Ibrahim Pasha, the grand vizier of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The building itself is a stunning example of Ottoman architecture from the 16th century.

The museum features a wide-ranging collection of Islamic art from different regions like Türkiye, the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa. You can see stunning examples of calligraphy, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and illuminated manuscripts. The highlight is the carpet collection, which contains over 1,700 pieces.

The Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum is my favourite museum in Istanbul, and I highly recommend a visit if you have spare time.

One day in Istanbul is hardly sufficient to explore the popular attractions outside, considering the city’s vast size, let alone to visit them all. The tour includes the city’s most popular attractions (plus visits to Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia), transportation and a traditional Turkish lunch.

If you opt for a self-guided tour of the city , start your day early with a visit to Hagia Sophia (ensure to purchase skip-the-line tickets in advance). After that, admire the exterior of the Blue Mosque before making your way to Hafiz Mustafa 1864 for the best baklava in Istanbul. In the afternoon, climb to the top of Galata Tower for stunning views of the city and the Bosphorus Strait. If you book skip-the-lines tickets you’ll be able to visit these attractions in one day, starting with the two mosques in the morning.

On the second day head to Kabataş and Akaretler neighbourhoods, home to the famous Dolmabahçe Palace and Galata Tower. Istanbul is huge, so if you want to see everything in 4 days, it’s crucial to select your accommodation’s location carefully. I hadn’t realized how vast the city was when I booked my trip, but fortunately, I picked a central area, making it easy to walk around.

If you’re visiting for the first time or sightseeing I highly recommend staying in Sultanahmet. This is the city’s most central area, home to iconic attractions such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Topkapi Palace. Make sure also to stay within walking distance of a T1 tram stop, as this tram line connects the Sultanahmet to attractions like the Galata Tower and Dolmabahçe Palace.

Getting around in Istanbul

You’ll find most of the historic landmarks centred in Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu districts. This 4-day Istanbul itinerary primarily involves walking . However, you’ll need to utilize public transportation to travel between Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu, and vice versa. The best way to do that is by using tram line T1, which links the two districts.

I recommend buying an Istanbul Card (Istanbulkart), a prepaid and rechargeable contactless smartcard. You can use it on the entire public transport system, including trams, metro, buses and even ferries (see the ferry schedule here ).

Another option is to use the hop-on-hop-off bus . It takes you from Sultanahmet district all the way to Dolmabahce Palace and even to Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian side.

How to get to Istanbul

Istanbul has two international airports – Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW).

Istanbul Airport (IST) , located on the European side, is the main international airport serving Istanbul and the largest airport in Türkiye. To get to the city centre:

• the easiest way is to book a private transfer directly to your hotel (more than 1,030+ excellent reviews)
• public transposition – take M11 to Kağıthane and then change to another line or a bus, depending on whether you’re staying in the Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu district. I don’t recommend this option because it requires changing between 2-3 types of transportation, plus walking and a lot of stairs

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) , located on the Asian side, is the second-largest airport serving the city. It primarily handles domestic (for example flights to Cappadocia) and low-cost international flights. To get to the city centre take the shuttle bus Havabus , which will stop you at Taksim on the European side (1h30min journey).

Best time to visit Istanbul

The best time to visit Istanbul is during the spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) months. During these seasons, the weather is mild and pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the city’s attractions. Additionally, the tourist crowds are generally smaller compared to the peak summer months, allowing for a more enjoyable experience.

Check in advance and avoid the long holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, as many locals travel during these periods.

Norwegian Viva Mediterranean Cruise Blog – Day 4 – Istanbul

On the fourth day of our Mediterranean cruise, the Norwegian Viva docked in Istanbul, Turkey. We had nine hours (9 AM to 6 PM) to explore the city before returning to the ship. Follow along as we explore Istanbul’s sites and see what we did back onboard the Viva.

Since we had a full day ahead of us, we wanted to get a good breakfast in. We returned to the Indulge Food Hall to get breakfast. Again, the restaurant was nearly empty, providing a relaxing experience. As I mentioned in our Day 2 blog , finding where different breakfast items were on the first day was a bit of a struggle. But coming back here the second time was much easier; you understood where everything was. We grabbed our food and headed to the Indulge outdoor dining section to enjoy the views of Istanbul as we ate. 

The ship docked at Galataport Istanbul, a relatively new cruise port right at the edge of the city. We arrived promptly at 9 AM, and they announced guests could leave from Deck 4. We didn’t have an excursion booked; our group would explore the city on our own. That allowed us to take our time with breakfast and leave the ship around 9:30 AM. 

We didn’t encounter any lines and could walk right off the Viva. The cruise port is massive, so it took a bit of walking to get out (it’s the first underground cruise terminal in the world). On our way out, we had to have a mandatory Istanbul card to exit. Norwegian provided this card in our staterooms the night before. According to the document, it took the place of our passports for Istanbul and let us scan in and out of the cruise terminal with a QR code. 

We wanted to see a few sites in the tourist area called Sultanahmet Square. It’s about a 50-minute walk from the cruise terminal to that area, so we decided to try the local transportation system. Right next to the cruise terminal is the T1 Tram, which will take you to Sultanahmet. 

We could see the tram line on the main street as soon as we exited the cruise terminal. Unfortunately, it didn’t look like there were any ticket machines there. We had to walk about 5 minutes to a stop where two ticket machines were waiting. There, a line of cruise ship passengers stood at the machines, trying to figure them out. They were pretty confusing about what you needed to buy and how to get it. Some helpful locals were working the screens for people (mainly because they needed tickets themselves and wanted to speed up the line). They really should have put separate machines in the cruise terminal so they didn’t clog up the lines for the locals. The cost was 17.70 Turkish Lira, but we used a credit card and it came out to around $0.60.

Tip: Turkey was our only stop that didn’t use the Euro; they use the Turkish Lira. ATM machines are available right across the street from the cruise terminal, but we decided to use our credit cards and the euros we had. Since we were doing all tourist stuff, they would accept Euro, usually at a worse exchange rate, but we were talking low dollar amounts so we didn’t care. 

Our first stop was the Basilica Cistern. It’s a massive underground cavern built 1,500 years ago that the city used to catch run-off water and provide fresh water to its residents. The Basilica Cistern is used for tours and has art installations throughout the walkways. 

We purchased tickets in advance through the facility’s official website ( see the link here) . The cost for tourists was 880 Turkish Lira, or about $27 per person. When purchasing, you choose your date but don’t have to pick a time, which gives you a lot of flexibility. 

Tip: Beware aggressive sellers. About a block away from the Cistern, a man approached us and asked what we were looking for. We said the Cistern, and he pointed to it in the distance, trying to help us out. Then, he asked what time it was. We said 10:15, and he said, “You just missed the 10 o’clock tour. They run every hour, why don’t you come to my store to see Turkish Carpets.” It was an outright lie; there are no timed tours there. We politely declined. Then, again, as we got closer, another man approached us, trying to get us to go to his store to purchase a rug (the store was nowhere near the place). 

Once inside the Cistern, we could appreciate the magnitude of this facility. It’s longer than a football field and 30 feet high, supported by 336 stone columns. Color-changing lighting illuminated the space, providing an eerie, otherworldly glow. We followed the metal walkways over the shallow water to take in the art installations and the whole space. 

In the Basilica Cistern, I noticed there wasn’t a ton of signage. Without a tour guide, it made it hard to understand what exactly we were looking at and what it was used for. An audio guide was available, but you’d have to access it on your phone and have your own headphones. Overall, we spent about 30 minutes exploring this ancient underground reservoir.

Tip: If you like audio guides, bring headphones with you. Many attractions offer audio guides along with your entry ticket, but you have to access them on your phone and use your own headphones.

After the Cistern, we headed across the street to Sultan Ahmet Park. The expansive public square is nestled between two huge mosques, the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Police patrolled the area, which seemed to keep the pushy merchants at bay. 

The red building at the north of the square was the Hagia Sophia. Originally built in 360 AD, it was used as a Christian Church for over a thousand years before being converted to a mosque. Now, it’s also a museum, charging a 25 euro admission. 

Instead, we headed south to the massive Blue Mosque, formally known as Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Much more recently built in 1616, this grand building is still used for work but is open to guests. The Blue Mosque is free to enter but is closed during prayer times, which can vary daily, usually around 1 PM and 5 PM.

The Blue Mosque is currently undergoing renovations, but we made our way through the scaffolding to the entrance at the rear. The line was outside the building but moved fairly quickly. We waited on line less than 5 minutes. 

Tip: For places of worship, you must dress appropriately. For men, that meant no shorts. For women, they must wear a head covering and no shorts or skirts. Before you entered they had a booth handing out head covering and leg covering you could borrow if you weren’t dressed appropriately. The men were okay in our group because it was a cool day, and we had pants on, but the women had to get head coverings. 

As we entered, we had to take off our shoes before stepping foot on the plush carpet. Then we turned the corner, and my jaw dropped as I entered the expansive space. The domed ceiling was adorned with blue and gold tile and artwork. Massive candelabras hung from the ceiling, providing illumination along with light through the windows. I’ve been to a lot of churches and historical sites, but never something that looked like that. The Islamic and Byzantine styles of decor were so unique to me. 

Since we didn’t have a tour guide, we spent about 15 minutes walking around and taking in the beauty of the inside of the building. Tour guides around us explained the historical significance to their groups; it’s another time a tour guide or audio guide might have helped me better understand what we were looking at. 

For lunch, we headed to Seven Hills Restaurant , known for its rooftop dining with panoramic city views. A few weeks before the cruise, we made reservations online so we wouldn’t have to wait long. It was a humid day, and the sun was in full force; I wouldn’t have minded eating inside, but the views were too good to pass up. 

While people are waiting for tables, they stand in a corner of the rooftop, and the staff puts out bread so they can feed the seagulls. The location in between the two mosques and the birds flying around creates amazing pictures but also makes dining much less enjoyable (a bird pooped on our table during our meal). 

Here, we tried Raki, Turkey’s national drink. Also called “lion’s milk,” this clear liquor is made with grapes and anise. As you add ice or water to it, it gets cloudy, and the flavor profile changes. Tasting it, I got the familiar licorice taste of ouzo and a kick from the alcohol (ouzo is usually around 37% alcohol; this Raki was 45%).

The prices here were higher than we saw in Greece, but that’s not surprising considering this was the epitome of a tourist place. We ordered several dishes to share with the table. Overall, it cost us $33 euro each for the food and one cocktail per person.

After lunch, we made a short walk to Sultanahmet Meydani, a large public square where an ancient hippodrome (race track) once stood. Here, we saw a few structures left over from the old days, but mostly, it was just a large, open public space. 

Some people in the group wanted to try an authentic hookah bar while we were there. We pulled up a random one on Google Maps and headed there. It was tucked into an alley, consisting of an outdoor space with benches and chairs under awnings. It was genuinely authentic; I only saw one other group of tourists in the place.

I’d never been to a hookah bar and was surprised by the crowd. I always assumed it was more of a social activity, but a majority of the patrons were single men sitting on their phones while enjoying hookah for 15-20 minutes. It was around lunchtime, so maybe they were on their lunch breaks, as many seemed to be dressed for work.  

I was feeling under the weather that day, so I avoided hookah and instead opted for apple tea, which Istanbul was known for. It tasted like a cross between apple cider and a really light tea (we brought some apple tea powder home as a gift).

It wouldn’t be a stop in Istanbul without visiting the Grand Bazaar, a sprawling labyrinth of shops and stalls. I read about it before the cruise but never saw pictures or videos, so I didn’t know what to expect. I was kind of disappointed when we entered and saw that it was basically a massive indoor mall. 

The place was bustling with activity, with local vendors offering everything from spices and textiles to jewelry and souvenirs. Most shops here offered the exact same things, so there wasn’t much “shopping” to do. We also had to be careful, as if you showed any interest, you’d get high sales pressure. At one point, while my friends were in a shop, I was chastised for not wanting to buy something from a vendor while I was in the walkway. “You’re supposed to buy things here,” he said.

That’s not to say there wasn’t anything to see at the Grand Bazaar. We saw several stores with beautiful Turkish lamps on display. We also saw tons of Turkish Delight. I’ve had Turkish Delight in the States before, but nothing like what was here. It’s a dessert made with gel and sugar for a unique, almost taffy-like texture. Here, vendors would cut and sell rolls of it rather than prepackage boxes (they had those, too, if you wanted). I wasn’t prepared for all their varieties: hazelnut, blueberry, cinnamon. We bought a kilo of different types to sample later that day. 

Since the Grand Bazaar was halfway back to Galataport Cruise Terminal, we opted to walk the rest of the way. It was a pleasant walk, basically just through a busy metropolitan area. It was 4:30, and we had to be back on the ship at 5:30, so we had plenty of time for the 20-minute walk. 

Overall, Istanbul was my least favorite port on this trip. While it was nice to see the culture and sights, the pushy salesmen trying to take advantage of tourists were off-putting. At no point did I feel unsafe, but it just made me uneasy. 

Since the cruise terminal is so large, it takes about 15 minutes to walk through it and then head back onto the ship. We headed up to Indulge Food Hall / the Soleil Bar to grab some cocktails and munchies while we tried our Turkish Delight. The Turkish Delight was really tasty, I could see why the kid in “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” sold all his siblings out for this dessert. Our food we ordered from Indulge was delivered quickly. and was quite tasty. 

This area proved to be one of my favorite parts of the ship, a great place to relax and snack with amazing views. When I first saw this space when I sailed on the sister ship, the Prima, I had this cruise in mind, and I could picture this group enjoying the Mediterranean landscape while hanging out together. It turned out just like I imagined it.

We went back to our rooms to change and get ready for dinner and agreed to meet at 7:30. We met at the Metropolitan Bar, which was hosting a trivia. It was an odd time for it, and the host was on a loud microphone that kind of killed the vibe for pre-dinner cocktails. We ended up just heading to Hudsons main dining room.

When we arrived, the hostess told us there were no tables available and that we should go down one level to the Commodore Room, the other main dining room. We would have known that if the app had waitlists, but because they weren’t using the virtual queues on our sailing we had to go to one room to be redirected to the other. The menu is the same in both dining rooms, so we didn’t really care.

The Commodore Room is much less grand than Hudsons. Instead of the panoramic windows, you get port holes, some obstructed by lifeboats, and it’s much louder in the space. It’s much more like what you’d see in a standard cruise ship main dining room, while Hudsons feels like specialty dining in atmosphere. 

Again, service was lacking here. Our waitress barely engaged in conversation and started the meal by bringing four dinner rolls for the five of us. We had to request to see the wine list, and then when we tried to order a wine off the list, the staff seemed confused by our specific orders. Out of the three wines we chose, only two were correct. 

For dinner this evening, I started with the French Onion Soup, which was really disappointing. That soup is known for having copious amounts of caramelized cheese on top. Norwegian’s version uses a gruyere cheese crouton instead, so it feels more like onion soup with a crouton. It was very disappointing compared to the fantastic version Royal Caribbean offers.

Thankfully, my entree made up for it. I got the Hawaiian Pork Belly with Sweet Soy Drizzle. It was delicious. The presentation looked very high-end, and the pork belly was perfectly crispy while still tender. While I am not usually a yam fan, it worked perfectly with the soy drizzle.

Nothing leapt out at me for dessert. I found it odd that two of the three featured desserts that day had cheese in them (ricotta and cream cheese). I ended up going with the chocolate cake with no sugar added. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.

We ended the evening by going to “Ocean Music Fest” in the Viva Theater. Norwegian described the event as “the ultimate jam session” filled with “all your party favorites.” It wasn’t overly descriptive, but my guess was it was something like a variety show meets a music festival. 

Tip: On the Viva, on “Beetlejuice” and “Press Your Luck” require reservations. Everything else is first-come, first-served. 

This time, the Viva Theater setup was slightly different. The stadium seats didn’t extend all the way to the stage, leaving floor space between the seats and the stage. Rather than the pub-style tables they had during Icons , this floor was meant to be a “general admission” or dance floor setup. The problem is that no one wanted to be the center of attention on the dance floor; people clung to the sides. 

This show featured the musicians we’ve seen around the ship performing at the bars and lounges. It was nice to see them getting the big stage, as there was some good talent there, but the way the show was written didn’t highlight their voices or styles. When they perform their sets in the bars, they get to adhere to their styles. Here, Norwegian shoehorned them into arrangements and songs that didn’t really highlight their strengths. 

Also, the whole concept as a whole didn’t make sense. What do these songs have in common?

Can’t figure it out? Neither can I. There wasn’t a story or even a theme I could make out. Also, it was just the different performers from the ship; there weren’t dancers or choreographers to enhance the performance like other production shows on cruise ships. 

The cruise director and her staff were in the general admission area, engaging with the crowd and trying to get them to dance. They were trying hard, probably harder than I ever saw cruise entertainment staff work, but people didn’t want to do that. The one exception was orange shirt guy. At one point, a very drunk older man in a bright orange t-shirt drunkenly stumbled to the general admission area and tried to talk to a female singer while she was performing her song. The cruise director noticed and expertly guided him to the side. He later returned, planting himself feet from the female singer and staring, swaying back and forth like a weeble wobble kid’s toy. Later on, another drunk man was dancing by himself in the middle of the floor, having the time of his life as the crowd watched. If anything, the people-watching was good for this show.

Our seats were on the side of the stage, the upper level, so we got a good look at the crowd. I felt bad for the performers; the first 10-15 rows were filled with people with arms crossed and stone faces. In the back, people were dancing and singing along, but I doubt the performers could see it. It was a shame because people enjoyed it, but the people who got there early got the closer seats to sit there and be unamused.

Norwegian should either describe the show better to weed out the people who won’t enjoy it or pull the seating all the way out and get rid of the standing room, as it doesn’t seem to work with these crowds. 

Overall though, the show kind of highlights a problem with Norwegian’s entertainment. Due to budget cuts, they’ve removed big production shows (at least the Viva had Beetlejuice) and replaced them with cheaper shows using in-house musicians, but the execution is flawed. Carnival does something similar, but they do it well. They take the bands and vocalists who perform in their big shows and have them also perform at the bars and lounges around the ship, but they make sure it suits them. The brass section plays big band music; the strings play acoustic string pop, etc. Instead, Norwegian takes these talented performers and shoehorns them into a show they made that doesn’t really fit them.

After the show, the Viva Theater transformed into a “Rock and Roll Party.” Like many of the Viva parties, it was sparsely attended. I’m unsure if it’s because it’s a Mediterranean cruise or the crowd on this specific sailing, but they really struggled to get parties going. It could be the schedule too; we had nine busy port days and one sea day, so people weren’t as likely to want to party into the night. Perhaps these are better attended when the Viva is doing Caribbean cruises out of Puerto Rico. The entertainment staff was doing everything they could to engage people, so it’s not something you can blame them for.

We ended up turning in to get ready for our next day in Mykonos, Greece.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Greece and Turkey. Although Turkey usually requires foreign visitors to obtain a visa in order to enter the country, Tauck guests traveling aboard a ship are part of a validated escorted shore excursion and are thus not required to obtain an individual Turkish visa (regardless of their citizenship). You do not need a visa for Greece.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Greece to determine what travel documentation is required.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the cruise ship, your passport will be held by the purser until you disembark.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Deposits & Final Payment

The deposit and the fees for the optional Protection Plan or Cancel Fee Waiver [CFW] coverage are due at time of booking.

The deposit amount is $1,500 per person

Final Payment is due to Tauck  90  days before departure for lands trips, and  120  days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Failure to make payment will be a considered a cancellation by the guest and all applicable cancellation fees will apply.

Tauck's Cruise & Event Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. It must be purchased within 10 days of your initial deposit. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON and Tauck will  reduce the regular cancellation fees outlined herein, provided we are notified of cancellation before your cruise departs. Certain terms and restrictions apply (see below*).

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.  Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

• Trip Cancellation –  Should you cancel for covered reasons, the plan reimburses cancellation fees imposed, up to your total trip cost. 
• Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
• Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
• Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip. 
• Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.

Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Cruise and Event Protection is:   $799   per person

This plan provides cancellation coverage for your trip and other insurance coverages that apply only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Cruise and Event Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included in initial payment. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your reservation. Cruise and Event Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit

Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees.

If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit

Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply for this tour.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Cruise Protection Plan:

120 days or more before departure: Loss of cost of Tauck's Cruise and Event Protection fee per person 119 – 60 days before departure: Loss of 25% of the cost of the cruise, not including air (if applicable), plus loss of Cruise and Event Protection fee, per person 59 – 1 days before departure: Loss of 50% of the cost of the cruise, not including air (if applicable), plus loss of Cruise and Event Protection fee, per person Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Cruise Protection Plan: 120 days or more before departure: $1500 per person 119 – 60 days before departure: Loss of 50% of the cost of cruise, not including air (if applicable), per person 59 - 1 days before departure: Loss of 100% of the cost of cruise, not including air (if applicable), per person Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

Tour Interruption Fees

If you have to interrupt your tour en route, you may be entitled to a refund for the unused land portion if it exceeds 24 hours; certain restrictions apply. Such refunds are based upon the number of overnights missed less a fee of $40 per person per day for unused transportation and other fixed expenses.

Partial Room Cancellation

A person who cancels or leaves a tour while a roommate remains constitutes a cancellation of one type of accommodation and rebooking of another type of accommodation. The price charged to the remaining person is the new, higher price for the new accommodation.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation and transfer terms outlined herein. Note: All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Cruise & Event Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to space constraints aboard the Windstar vessel and on motor coaches in Greece and Turkey, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to one small carry-on, no larger than an average size knapsack, which will easily fit under your seat, as overhead racks are not wide enough to accommodate large bags.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies .

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

A doctor and limited medical facilities are available onboard. However, if you take special medications, please bring an adequate supply with you; they may not be available onboard. Medical services and all medicines (except acetaminophen, aspirin and anti-nausea pills) dispensed to you by the ship's doctor will be charged to your shipboard account. If you become ill during the voyage and the physician is unable to care for your needs onboard, you will be transferred to medical facilities onshore.

The Windstar cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot.  Many of the sites visited were built in antiquity and have many steps and uneven surfaces. It is important that you wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in. The amount of walking that you choose to do, however, is at your discretion. Additionally, you should be steady on your feet to circumnavigate the decks of the ship while cruising on the Aegean Sea. Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

What To Pack

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering.  Most days are spent outside or in transit. Therefore, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Breezy days at sea and cool evenings will require warmer, layered clothing. A jacket and tie are not required for gentlemen aboard ship, but may be preferred or required at some local restaurants.

The "casual elegance" of a small cruise ship is also reflected in the way their guests' dress. We recommend that you wear relaxed and comfortable clothing, as you would at an elegant land resort. For women's daytime wear, we suggest walking shorts, skirts, sarongs, lightweight tops and cover-ups; for evening wear - sun dresses, pants, or informal cocktail attire. For men's daytime wear, we suggest Bermuda shorts, polo shirts, and khaki pants; in the evening - lightweight trousers and short-sleeved dress or polo shirts. No suits or ties are required. Shorts, jeans, and t-shirts are not permitted in the restaurant during the evening.

Valet laundry service is available at the hotel listed on this itinerary. On board the ship, next-day laundry and pressing service is available; dry cleaning services, irons and ironing boards are not available.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for cruising on the Aegean Sea:

Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella

Short and long-sleeved shirts/tee shirts (for the warmer, summer months extra tee shirts are always a good idea)

Shorts (for summer) and pants for casual daytime wear

Sport coat for men (suggested but not required) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear

Sweater; lightweight for summer, and medium weight for spring/fall

Camera, lenses, chargers, batteries and extra memory cards

Sunscreen and hat

Small flashlight

Insect repellent

Washcloth - not all European hotels provide washcloths, so you may want to bring one along.   A package of pre-moistened towlettes is an excellent alternative.

Travel alarm clock (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)

Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags

Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor.  While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed.  What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.    

The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Greece and Turkey enjoy long hot dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures in Greece and Turkey are tempered by the Etesian northerly wind which blows across the Aegean Sea, and breezes called "meltemia", however, mainland temperatures are often very high. Winters are mild and wet, although rainfall is generally low in most areas.

Seattle sits on the slip of land between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with the Olympic and Cascade Mountains serving as a dramatic backdrop for this oh-so cosmopolitan city. Soar up the futuristic Space Needle and experience the views atop this stunning landmark created for the 1962 World's Fair.

Sitka is a charming island community surrounded with stunning mountain and seaside panoramic views. The vast and rich wildlife boasts sightings of whales, brown bears, deers, sea otters, and various birds flock here. This destination offers superb fishing, and plentiful historical attractions.

Juneau has been called “ Alaska's peak experience,” certainly due in part to its unparalleled glacier viewing from such places as Tracy Arm Fjord, the Juneau Icefields and Glacier Bay National Park. Kayak up one of the area's many protected waterways, go flightseeing, tour historic downtown or try your hand at panning for gold. The majestic Mendenhall Glacier lies nearly 12 miles outside Juneau, a treck worthwhile.

This is why visitors come to Alaska-to see glaciers as magnificent as Dawes-and getting there is half the excitement. From Stephens Passage, your ship will turn into the glacially carved fjord of Endicott Arm, the southern sister fjord to Tracy. However, Endicott is special. It's the fjord less travelled, and at its head, Dawes Glacier. But first, the 31-mile fjord. Sheer granite walls. Plunging waterfalls. Spruce and hemlock trees clinging to the steep sides. Missing American teen who left cruise ship at German port has been found safe

A 14-year-old American boy who walked away from the Caribbean Princess cruise ship after its scheduled stop at a German port more than three days ago has been found safe, his grandmother said Saturday.

Aydin Brown had been on the cruise with his grandmother, but left the ship after it docked at Rostock-Warnemünde on Thursday morning, authorities said.

State and local police on Saturday distributed three new photos of the teenager as their regional search remained underway. Two of the photos, captured from security video, included an unknown man who appeared to be speaking with Brown.

In an earlier statement, Rostock municipal police said they wanted to speak to the man or anyone who could identify him.

The two walked toward Warnemünde church square at about 7:45 a.m. Thursday, police said.

Princess Cruises thanked German authorities for finding the teenager.

“We are delighted that Aydin Brown has been found safe and sound,” the cruise line said in a statement Saturday. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to German authorities for their swift response and exceptional efforts in locating Aydin after he disembarked in Warnemunde last Thursday morning.”

The company said Brown has been reunited with family.

Brown’s grandmother left the ship Thursday night amid the first hours of the search for Brown, the cruise line said Friday, and the company flew his mother to Germany.

“We understand the distress this situation has caused and will continue to provide ongoing on-site support to the family during this challenging time,” Princess Cruises said at the time.

According to cruise ship tracker CruiseMapper , the 12-day journey travels the Baltic Sea, with destinations that include Copenhagen, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden. The round-trip cruise started in Southampton, England, on June 30 and was scheduled to return on July 12, according to the site.

An American teenager who vanished in Germany while on a cruise was found safe, his family said Saturday — three days after they feared he had been “lured away” when the ship docked.

Aydin Brown, 14, was last seen disembarking the Caribbean Princess Cruise ship in Rostock-Warnemünde — about two hours north of Berlin — by himself Thursday morning after arguing with his grandmother, Fox News reported . 

“We are delighted that Aydin Brown has been found safe and sound,” the cruise line told NBC News Saturday , adding that the teen was reunited with his family. 

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to German authorities for their swift response and exceptional efforts in locating Aydin after he disembarked in Warnemunde last Thursday morning.” 

Local authorities released three photos of Brown during their search.

Two were surveillance footage images that showed the teen speaking with an unidentified man before the two walked toward Warnemünde Church, according to NBC News. 

Police had asked the man to report to them during the search, but it is unclear who he was or if he assisted in the Texas boy being found safe. 

Before he was located, one of Brown’s cousins said the family thought he had been “lured away” by a stranger.” 

“My worst nightmare continues to unroll,” Anne Yaktiyol wrote on social media. “Aydin remains missing. It appears once he left the ship in Warnemunde, Germany, he may have been lured away.”
