Your Safari start page, or "homepage", is the page that loads whenever you start Safari. You can change this page to whatever you'd like, but if you have an adware infection it may keep getting reset. If this is the case, you can try manually removing the adware so that you can regain your control. If you use an iOS device, you can create custom shortcuts to simulate a traditional start page.

Changing Your Homepage

Step 1 Open the Safari browser.

  • If you're using Safari for Windows, click the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences". It is highly recommended that you switch to a more up-to-date browser, as Safari for Windows is no longer supported by Apple and is not receiving any security updates.

Step 3 Select the General tab if it isn't already.

  • You can also click Set to Current Page to set your new homepage to the page that is currently open.
  • If your homepage keeps resetting to something else, red on to the next section.

How to customize your start page in Safari on iPhone and iPad

Iphone Safari Start Page Hero

  • Choose sections for your start page
  • Set a background image for your start page

Safari is probably one of your most used apps on your current iPhone. After all, Safari is your gateway to the wonderful world of the internet on the go. But have you ever wished you could make your mobile Safari experience a little more personal?

Since macOS Big Sur, Apple gave users the ability to customize the start page in Safari on the Mac . But this same feature did not make its way to the iPhone and iPad until iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, respectively. When you customize the start page in mobile Safari, you can pick your own cool background image and choose what sections you want to display when you first open a new tab. Sections can include your Favorites, Siri Suggestions, Reading List, and more. It's a simple little setting, but customizing your start page makes Safari feel more like your own.

Here's how to customize your start page in Safari on iPhone and iPad.

How to choose sections for your start page in Safari on iOS

  • Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
  • If you are on an existing webpage, tap the Tabs button and launch a new tab .
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the start page and tap Edit .
  • If you prefer to use the same start page customization across all of your iPhones, iPads, and Macs, make sure the toggle for Use Start Page on All Devices is set to ON (green). This ensures that your start page appearance and settings are synced through iCloud.
  • You'll see sections for Favorites , Frequently Visited , Shared With You , Privacy Report , Siri Suggestions , Reading List , and iCloud Tabs . Tap the toggles for the sections that you want to display to ON (green).
  • If you want to rearrange the order that these sections appear in, just drag-and-drop with the handle into the order that you prefer.

In iOS 16 , a new section for Recently Closed Tabs will be added to the available options listed above. This section will show tabs that you've recently closed, in case you want to pull them up again.

How to set a background image for your start page in Safari on iOS

Adding a background image is a good way to spice up your Safari browsing experience while you're on the start page. Apple gives you the option to choose a preset image, or you can even pick out your own. Here's how.

  • Make sure you're in a new tab so you can be on the start page .
  • Scroll down to the bottom and tap Edit .
  • Tap the toggle for Background Image to ON (green).
  • Select one of the preset images by tapping on it.
  • If you prefer to use your own, tap the large plus (+) button.
  • Choose an image from your Photo Library .

If you've already set an image from your Photo Library but want to change it, just tap on the square with your custom image to browse your Photo Library again for a different image.

A personalized Safari

As you can see, it's easy to customize your start page in Safari on your favorite iPhone and iPad in iOS 15 . Doing so will give you a better experience whenever you open up a new tab in Safari, and it is a great way to add your own touch to the browser.

How to customize Safari start page on iPhone or iPad

Keval

The redesigned Safari start page was first introduced in Mac OS Big Sur and then rolled out to iOS 15 and iPad OS 15. With that, Apple has given its legacy browser, Safari, a fresh new start (being honest, a much-needed reset).

One of the features included in the mix is customizing the Safari start page or home page to your preference. And with the introduction of iOS 16 , we can have different start page settings for different Tab Groups. How? Follow the step-by-step guide to customize the Safari start page on your iPhone and iPad.

How to edit Safari start page on iPhone

How to add a background image to safari start page.

In Safari, the start page is usually packed with bookmarked sites, frequently visited websites, privacy reports, items on the reading list, and so much more! However, you can personalize the Safari start page to only show sections you wish to see.

  • Open  Safari  and stay on the start page or open a new tab .
  • Scroll down and tap  Edit .
  • Toggle off the options you do not want on the Customize Start Page .
  • You may also rearrange the order by touching the  three lines icon  and dragging it up or down.

How to personalize and declutter Safari start page on iPhone in iOS 15

Anytime you change your mind, follow the same steps to remove or add more sections.

Traditionally, browsers have been that plain white backgrounds, but with this edit option, Apple has tried adding a pinch of glamor to it. What’s more, seeing elements you like keeps you fresh, motivated, and focused on the task.

You can use one of the wallpapers by Apple or choose a custom image from your Photos app. Here’s how.

  • Open  Safari .
  • Toggle on  Background Image .
  • Tap a wallpaper or the  plus icon  to choose an image from the iPhone Camera Roll.
  • Tap  X  to close this screen. You will see the selected image as the background for Safari’s start page.

How to add a background image to Safari’s start page in iOS 15

How to change background for Safari Tab Group in iOS 16

From iOS 16, the start page customization option will not be applied to all the Tab Groups. So, if you have multiple Tab Groups in action, you’ll have to change them individually.

  • Go to desired Tab Group start page.
  • Tap the edit button.
  • Customize the page with the steps mentioned above.

And that’s it.

The start page is our door to everything we will be doing in the browser. When you launch the browser, it’s the first page you are introduced to.

Thankfully, we can easily edit or customize the iPhone Safari browser’s home page. Hope you enjoy customizing your Safari comment; if you liked it, share if you found it helpful.

Change or Set Safari Homepage on Mac

Depending on the settings, you may find the Safari browser on your MacBook opening a blank page or landing on the default Safari Home.

However, the macOS Safari browser also provides the option to set any website as the Home Page and this can be used to make Safari always land on your favorite or most frequently accessed website, whenever it is opened.

In the case of iPhone, Safari browser does not provide the option to Set Homepage, but it provides the option to add websites to the Home screen of your device.

2. Once you land on the website, click on the Safari tab in top-menu bar and select Preferences in the drop-down menu.

Customize Safari Start Page on iPhone

So, what sort of customization Safari offers? Aside from letting you hide or show several features on the Start page, Safari also lets you change the background. The browser comes with a handful of pre-defined wallpapers.

If you don’t find the available wallpapers appealing, you can choose the desired image as the background for the Safari start page.

1. To get started, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Now, tap on the tabs icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.

3. Next, tap on “+” at the bottom left corner of the screen.

Tap on the plus button

4. Next up, tap on Edit . (You may need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen to find the edit button.) To make your task a bit easier, we have divided the whole customization process into two different sections. So, follow the steps from here as per your needs.

Hide/Show Unwanted Safari Features from Safari Start Page

Under the “Customize Start Page” section, you should see a list of features such as:

  • Favorites: All your favorite sites
  • Frequently Visited: Sites that you frequently visit.
  • Shared with you: Shows all the shared links
  • Privacy Report: It’s a detailed privacy report that lets you know the number of trackers Safari has blocked from profiling you. Besides, it also shows a long list of trackers and the websites that were contacted by trackers.
  • Siri Suggestions: Siri keeps a track of your browsing and offers fully personalized suggestions.
  • Reading List: It contains a list of all the web pages that you want to catch up with later.
  • iCloud Tabs: In order to offer a seamless web browsing experience, iOS allows you to sync tabs between iDevices that are linked with the same iCloud account.

How to change the default web browser on iPhone or iPad

W hen you set up a new iPhone or iPad, you may notice that Safari is the default web browser. And while many users are fine with that, some others may prefer having a different default. Fortunately, with iOS and iPadOS 14, Apple started allowing users to change the default web browser. So, for example, if you're now running iOS 17 on an iPhone 15 Pro Max , you can change the web browser that the system defaults to when you click a link.

What's a default web browser?

As mentioned above, a default web browser is an app that iOS or iPadOS automatically directs to when you hit a link on your iDevice. Before OS version 14, users would have to copy the link and paste it into a third-party web browser if they were unsatisfied with Safari. So, now, after changing the default web browser, the OS will automatically launch and load the URL in the chosen app.

How to change the default web browser on iOS or iPadOS

To change the default web browser on an iPhone or iPad running OS version 14 or later:

  • Go to the App Store and click on the Search tab in the bottom right corner.
  • Tap the Search field on top and search for web browser .
  • View the list of results and choose the one that appeals to you the most.
  • Download it and wait for it to install on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Head to the Settings app and scroll down to the app you just installed. Close
  • Click on Default Browser App .
  • Choose the app you just installed.
  • Now, whenever you click a link, it'll automatically load in the newly set default web browser.
  • If you change your mind, you could always revert to Safari by following the same steps. Close

Changing the default web browser can save you a lot of time

Choosing a default web browser spares you from needing to copy and paste a certain link in the browser of your choice. This way, you just click on a certain link, and it launches the browser you prefer instead of defaulting to Safari. However, keep in mind that third-party iOS web browsers utilize Apple's WebKit engine, so they're essentially Safari with the developers' additional layers and features.

How to change the safari home page on a mac.

Tired of opening Safari and seeing Favorites? Here's how to set your homepage to your favorite website in Safari on Mac.

Traditionally, a homepage is the first website your browser loads when you start it. But by default, Safari on Mac opens up a window of Favorites instead. If you'd like Safari to start with a website of your choice, follow these simple steps.

First, open the Safari web browser by clicking its icon in the dock, by using Spotlight Search , or by selecting it from the macOS Applications folder . From there, navigate to the page you'd like to use as your home page. It can be any website you want.

Navigate to your desired home page

In the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Safari > Preferences.

Select Preferences in Safari

In Preferences > General, click the "Set to Current Page" button. This changes your home page to the current website Safari has open.

Click Set to Current Page button in Safari

After clicking the button, the address in the "Homepage" field will change to the address of the current page.

Next, we'll make it so you see your home page when you open Safari. In Preferences > General, click the drop-down menu beside the "New Windows Open With" listing.

Select New Windows Open With in Safari

In the drop-down menu, select the "Homepage" option.

Select Homepage from Drop Down List

If desired, you can repeat the same step with the "New Tabs Open With" option. In that case, every time you open a new tab, you'll see your home page.

iOS 17.4 adds new ‘Virtual Card Number’ feature to Apple Cash

Avatar for Chance Miller

iOS 17.4, which is currently available for beta testers, appears to include a significant change for Apple Cash users. According to reports on Reddit from user u/ simpledsp, Apple Cash users can now set up a virtual card number that can be used for shopping when Apple Pay online isn’t an option.

Apple Cash is Apple’s prepaid debit card that users have historically been able to use exclusively with Apple Pay, with no card number available whatsoever. Money on an Apple Cash card can also be sent to friends and family, transferred to a bank, or applied to an Apple Card balance.

With iOS 17.4, Apple is giving Apple Cash customers a new way to spend their balance even if Apple Pay isn’t available. A new popup message in the Wallet app reads:

Set Up Virtual Card Number Keep your card information safe with a new security code for every transaction. Easily access this card number in Safari AutoFill and use it to shop online where Apple Pay is not available.

Once you opt into setting up your Apple Cash virtual card number, you can view that card number, generate new card numbers and security codes, and more. This is essentially the same functionality that’s been available for the Apple Card credit card since it launched, but for the Apple Cash debit card now.

The new Apple Cash virtual card number appears to be rolling out to iOS 17.4 beta testers right now, but it might not be available for all Apple Cash accounts yet. iOS 17.4 is expected to launch to the general public in early March.

Thanks, Jonathan!

Set up iCloud Keychain

With iCloud Keychain, you can keep your passwords (and other secure information) updated across your devices and shared with the people that you trust.

iCloud Keychain remembers things, so that you don't have to. It autofills your information — like your Safari and app usernames, passwords and passkeys, credit card information and security codes, and Wi-Fi passwords on any device that you approve. iCloud Keychain can also help you share passwords and passkeys with people that you trust.

How to turn on iCloud Keychain

Before you turn on iCloud Keychain, update your device to the latest iOS or iPadOS , or the latest version of macOS , and make sure that two-factor authentication is turned on for your Apple ID.

Turn on iCloud Keychain on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro

Tap Settings, tap your name, then choose iCloud.

Tap Passwords and Keychain.

Turn on iCloud Keychain. You might be asked for your passcode or Apple ID password.

Click your name, then click iCloud. In earlier versions of macOS, click Apple ID, then click iCloud in the sidebar.

Turn on Passwords & Keychain.

If you choose to "Approve Later" when signing in to your Apple ID, you need to approve with an old passcode or from another device when prompted. If you're unable to approve, reset your end-to-end encrypted data when prompted.

Set up a shared password group

Starting in iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, shared password groups offer an easy, secure way to share passwords and passkeys with your family and other trusted contacts.

If you turn off iCloud Keychain

When you turn off iCloud Keychain, password, passkey, and credit card information is stored locally on your device.

When you sign out of iCloud on your device while iCloud Keychain is turned on, you're asked to keep or delete your Keychain information.

If you choose to keep the information, your passwords and passkeys are stored locally on your device, but aren't deleted or updated when you make changes on other devices.

If you don't keep the information, your passwords and passkeys aren't available on your device. An encrypted copy of your Keychain data is kept on iCloud servers. If you turn iCloud Keychain back on, your passwords and passkeys will sync to your device again.

When you turn off iCloud Keychain or sign out of iCloud on your device, you won't have access to any of your shared password groups. Other members of those groups will still have access to the passwords and passkeys that you shared.

How iCloud Keychain protects your information

iCloud protects your information with end-to-end encryption, which provides the highest level of data security. Your data is protected with a key that's made from information unique to your device, and combined with your device passcode, which only you know. No one else can access or read this data, either in transit or storage.
