New capcom game has a big catch, zelda: tears of the kingdom - 8 rare items that are easy to miss.

Golf is a difficult game , and so is PGA Tour 2K21 for that matter. Mastering the links takes practice, perseverance, and above all, patience. Initially, starting as a custom character is very challenging. Nevertheless, there are tools at the player's disposal to make the game a bit easier, namely the clubs.

RELATED: The Best Golf Games Of All Time, Ranked

Not all clubs, however, are made equally in PGA Tour 2K21 . Clubs are not only broken down into separate brands but different tiers as well. Knowing which clubs to prioritize will give players that extra edge to improve their game. It's also worth noting that putters, although important, are differentiated purely by their aesthetics in this game. As such, they will not be included on this list.

Updated August 13, 2021 by Mark Hospodar: When it comes to a golf game, club selection is undoubtedly important. As a lowly rookie taking their first steps on the PGA Tour, o ne's choice of clubs isn't too impressive. Like anything worthwhile in life, players are going to have to work hard before getting their hands on the best equipment. Not all of the clubs discussed here will be immediately available to a beginner. However, as players become more successful at their game, fancier pieces of equipment are easier to snag. It's a long, but rewarding process that definitely makes players feel like they are improving, and that their hard work actually does pay off in the end.

15 Ben Hogan GS53 Driver

Every club in the golf bag is important, but Drivers should never be neglected. They are absolutely essential for having any hope of reaching the green efficiently. However, they are not always the easiest clubs to control. One wrong move can mean the difference between hitting the fairway or a spectator in the crowd.

The Silver-tier version of the Ben Hogan GS53 Driver strikes a good balance between distance and forgiveness. It's certainly not a bad club to utilize while players are working toward unlocking the more valuable models throughout their PGA Tour career .

14 Bridgestone Tour B JGR 3-Wood

Although not offering as much distance as a Driver, a 3-Wood can still get the job done admirably. On a Par 5 hole, a 3-Wood is often a good choice to close the distance to the green (assuming you're on the fairway). As with Drivers, players still need to hit the ball relatively flush to reap the maximum reward.

Players can't go wrong with the Bridgestone Tour B JGR 3-Wood, specifically the Silver-tier. It offers excellent distance while also maintaining reliable forgiveness and swing plane. Thus, a player can afford to be a bit sloppier with this club without totally wrecking their game.

13 Ben Hogan VKTR 3-Hybrid

Hybrid clubs are the best of both worlds between Irons and Woods. Due to a shorter shaft length, they are easier to wield than a traditional Wood. In addition, Hybrids can strike the ball more reliably when compared to a long Iron.

RELATED:  Strange Sports Games Most Players Have Never Heard Of

The Ben Hogan VKTR Hybrid brand is a worthwhile club, particularly the Gold-tier. It's a much more forgiving club, representing a less risky option when compared to longer Irons and 3-Woods. If playing it safe is the objective, then a Hybrid is the best way to go.

12 Wilson D7 5-Hybrid

An excellent alternative to the previous entry is the Wilson D7 5-Hybrid. In situations where using a 5-Iron may seem too risky, the 5-Hybrid represents a safer alternative. Particularly on the higher difficulty settings, a little extra security can go a long way.

The Purple-tier version of this club is a solid choice. It's capable of delivering respectable distance while also possessing a slightly larger swing plane compared to the 3-Hybrid. Shot shaping is also comparable, so players can still hit a proper fade or draw.

11 Callaway Mavrik Max 8/9-Irons

Irons are a golfer's bread and butter , so to speak. They range in a variety of differing loft angles and shaft lengths. Matches can be won and lost on the approach to the green, but possessing the best Irons makes that goal a less daunting (not to mention frustrating) endeavor.

For closing short distances, the 8 and 9 Irons are essential. The best, Purple-tier version of the Callaway Mavrik Max series is a great choice. Although controlling the ball is trickier than other clubs, this brand still provides strong distance stats the player should find helpful.

10 Mizuno JPX 921 Tour 7-Iron

No golf bag is complete without a proper 7-Iron. It's a highly versatile "middle Iron" that can come in handy in a variety of situations. Whether it's making a chip shot or getting onto the green, a 7-Iron is capable of getting the job done.

RELATED: PGA2K21: Hardest Courses To Test Your Skills, Ranked

The Purple-tier variant of the Mizuno JPX 921 Tour is a viable option for players wanting to get the most out of their 7-Iron. Although it can potentially be a little unwieldy, players who get the hang of it can capitalize on the extra bit of distance this club achieves.

9 TaylorMade P790 6-Iron

This club is yet another example of a "middle Iron," capable of achieving a respectable level of distance while traversing the fairway. It grants a bit more yardage compared to a traditional 7-Iron, while still being useful for avoiding lone, obstructive trees.

The TaylorMade P790 6-Iron, specifically the Purple-tier, isn't a bad choice by any means. The club's swing plane is above-average and, like the 7-Iron, is versatile enough to be used in a variety of situations, both good and bad.

8 Wilson Staff Model Wedges

Inevitably, things will eventually go wrong in golf. Hazards such as rough and sand can't be avoided forever. In those situations, Wedges are required to extricate the player from his/her newfound dilemma. Having a trusty set of Wedges is paramount for salvaging a bad situation.

The Purple-tier Wilson Staff Model Wedges are excellent choices for less-than-ideal predicaments. Players can't go wrong with any subtype of Wedge in the Wilson brand, whether it's a Sand, Lob, Gap, or Pitching Wedge.

7 Callaway Mavrik Standard 3-Wood

Regarding Woods, the Callaway Mavrik Standard is a suitable alternative to the previously mentioned Bridgestone brand. The stats are broadly similar. However, the Callaway Mavrik Standard offers significantly more distance than the Bridgestone. Reaching the green on a long Par 5 is more likely with this club.

RELATED: 2K Versus EA: Who Makes Better Sports Games?

Conversely, the Bridgestone is more forgiving, making it more useful for beginners . However, the Callaway Mavrik Standard possesses more distance control, which helps keep the ball on target after a swing. Once players become more comfortable in their game, this club is the superior 3-Wood.

6 TaylorMade SIM MAX 3-Hybrid

A 3-Hybrid is an all-around versatile club. The difference between the TaylorMade SIM MAX and the Ben Hogan VKTR lies primarily in their distance output and control numbers. Both brands are broadly similar in their shot shaping, forgiveness, and swing plane stats.

The TaylorMade SIM MAX has the edge in distance, meaning the ball can travel further than the Ben Hogan brand. It comes at the cost of less distance control, but that shortcoming can be offset by focusing on the accuracy and efficiency of the player's swing.

5 Bridgestone GT B JGR HF2 5-Iron

It's already been stated that short Irons like the 8 and 9 varieties are essential. However, for long and mid-range shots, a 5-Iron can't be neglected. When navigating extensive holes like a Par 5, the 5-Iron is typically one of the player's go-to clubs.

The Silver-tier Bridgestone 5-Iron possesses a great blend of stats that easily makes it one of the best clubs in the game. It has a respectably high forgiveness rate for an Iron when compared to other brands. The Bridgestone's other attributes make it a formidable and versatile club.

4 Mizuno T20 Lob Wedge

A Lob Wedge functions exactly as its name suggests. When hazards block a player's path, this particular club really comes in handy by propelling the ball in a steep arc. If successful, players can avoid sand, water, and trees altogether .

RELATED: PGA 2K21: Hilarious User Created Courses To Play With Friends

Players can't go wrong with the Mizuno T20 Lob Wedge. All its stats, with the possible exception of distance control, are quite high for a club of its category. Shot shaping and swing plane are excellent, which helps in maintaining a great deal of accuracy.

3 The Golf Club CV Master Pitching Wedge

Pitching Wedges are perfect for making tricky lay-up shots when approaching the green. Bad shots with a Pitching Wedge can lead to much longer putts than anticipated, wrecking even the most carefully laden plans up to that point.

The attributes of The Golf Club CV Master Pitching Wedge are amazing. Forgiveness, swing plane, and distance control are all well above average. Players who consistently struggle with getting the ball near the flag will be well-served by this club.

2 Bridgestone Golf Tour B XW-1 Sand Wedge

Players will undoubtedly bring along a variety of Wedges when tackling a course . Sand Wedges, in addition to extricating oneself from a trap, are also worthwhile contenders when looking to land on the green.

This Bridgestone Sand Wedge delivers more shot-shaping potential as well as more distance compared to the previously-mentioned Pitching Wedge. Although not quite as forgiving, skilled players can still get to where they need to be efficiently and accurately.

1 TaylorMade SIM MAX Driver

Drivers are all about distance, and not too many can compare with the TaylorMade SIM MAX. This Driver can rifle a ball down a fairway with little trouble. The Purple-tier version of the TaylorMade SIM MAX offers one of the highest distance attributes in the game.

The Purple-tier's extra distance, however, comes at the cost of other stats. For a more well-rounded club, try the Silver-tier. Although the distance is reduced, other stats like forgiveness are much higher, making this club choice a less risky proposition.

Best Clubs to use in PGA Tour 2K21

Image of Paul DeMarco

Do you want to hit more fairways and greens in PGA Tour 2K21? It might be time to revisit your club choices if you’re having some problems. There are lots of options, and each club has its pros and cons. The best choice comes down to what best fits your playstyle. Some clubs have better stats than others, though. Here’s a look at some of the best clubs to use in PGA Tour 2K21.

Let’s open up that Golf Bag and see what the game has to offer. We’ll take a look at the best drivers, woods, irons, hybrids, and wedges. Each of the clubs in PGA Tour 2K21 has five different attributes that affect it:

  • Distance : how far the ball travels
  • Shot Shaping : effects the fade and draw
  • Forgiveness : swing timing bar
  • Swing Plane : how straight you can swing within the swing line bar
  • Distance Control : transition point of the backswing to downswing

Here are some of the best clubs to use in PGA Tour 2K21:

TaylorMade SIM MAX – Driver

Callaway Mavrik Standard – 3 Wood

TaylorMade SIM MAX – 5 Wood

TaylorMade SIM MAX – 3 Hybrid

TaylorMade SIM MAX – 4 Hybrid

Bridgestone Golf Tour B JGR HF2 – 5 Iron

Bridgestone Golf Tour B JGR HF2 – 6 Iron

  • Bridgestone Golf Tour B JGR HF2 – 7 Iron
  • Bridgestone Golf Tour B JGR HF2 – 8 Iron

The Golf Club TGC CV Master – Pitching Wedge

The Golf Club TGC CV Master – Gap Wedge

The Golf Club TGC CV Master – Sand Wedge

The Golf Club TGC CV Master – Lob Wedge

These clubs are popular choices by professional golfers like Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, and Rory Mcllroy. The stats on these clubs are solid all around. It’s a forgiving club with a very long distance, meaning you can hit the ball a long way. The forgiveness meter is also about halfway, meaning the swing timer bar is sizeable. It’s not an excellent club for Shot Shaping, also known as the fade and draw, but the club makes up for it in other aspects.

The Callaway Mavrik Standard boasts a reasonable distance, high forgiveness for a 3 Wood, and good all-around stats. It has a carry of 223 yards. Overall, it has high forgiveness for a 3 Wood, which helps a lot with timing.

The TaylorMade Sim Max 5 Wood carries 204 yards. This club boasts high forgiveness and solid swing plane, making it a top tier choice to throw in your bag.

Distance and Shot Shaping stats on this club are great for a hybrid. Again, forgiveness is very high with this club, which is why you may want to consider using it in your bag.

Like the 3 Hybrid, the SIM MAX 4 Hybrid offers solid distance and high forgiveness. PGA Tour 2K21 seems to be all about swing timing, so this is an ideal choice.

These clubs are popular picks by professionals like Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, and Bryson DeChambeau. Distance, Forgiveness, and Distance Control are all very high with this club. It has one of the highest forgiveness stats out of all the irons.

Like the 5 Iron, the 6 Iron has high forgiveness and a good swing plane. That combination makes it an excellent addition to the bag. We also stick with the same brand and model for the 7 and 8 iron clubs.

It’s one of the earlier pitching wedges you have access to, but it’s also one of the best all-around wedges. If you struggle with timing, the high forgiveness, swing plane, and distance control are phenomenal.

Again, we’re going with The Golf Club brand wedges. The all-around high stats make it a good option that you can use at any point in the game.

Sticking with the same brand and model, we’re going with the TGC CV Master. Again, the Forgiveness, Swing Plane, and Distance control is just what we’re looking for in a wedge.

When it comes to the short game, this club has all the stats you want. Distance is not great, but that doesn’t matter when it comes to the short game.

Finally, when it comes to putters, the choice does not matter all that much. Unlike other clubs like the drivers, irons, woods, hybrids, and wedges, there are no attributes. Pick whatever you think looks good to your eye. Aside from that, there’s no best putter in PGA Tour 2K21.

Best clubs to use in PGA Tour 2K21

Image of Chris Studley

In PGA Tour 2K21, mechanics play a pivotal role in whether you will succeed in the game. Making sure that you have fluid movements will go a long way to having success in 2K21. However, mechanics shouldn’t be your sole focus. Finding the right clubs can go a long way in helping you avoid the bunkers and the rough. But which clubs are the best ones for PGA Tour 2K21? Let’s go over our recommendations, starting with the drivers

In PGA Tour 2K21, you can have a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag. One of those clubs will be your driver, the stick that, for the most part, you will use at the beginning of each hole. Here are our recommendations for which drivers you should target:

Bridgestone Golf Tour B JGR (Silver)

This club, in our opinion, is the best option for beginners. While it does have lower-than-average Distance, the forgiveness on this club is among the best. That forgiveness will come in handy if you tend to slice. The JGR also has a decent Shot Shaping Attribute.

TaylorMade Sim Max (Silver)

If you feel that the JGR is a little too basic, try the TaylorMade Sim Max might be up your alley. The key when upgrading your driver is that you want to improve your Distance attribute, while at the same time, not losing too much in the Forgiveness category. The Sim Max offers you that, and you will also receive a boost in the Swing Plane and Distance Control attributes.

Ben Hogan ES53 (Silver)

Much like the Sim Max, the Ben Hogan ES53 offers a bit more distance than the JGR and slightly less forgiveness. It also provides just about the same power as the TaylorMade Sim Max, so choosing between the two will be a decision that you will have to make.

Keep in mind that there are different editions of each club that is listed above. The other editions of these clubs are of higher class, and thus, will have higher Distance attributes. However, each club’s Forgiveness category is also much lower, so keep this in mind when building your bag.

As far as wood clubs go, it’s probably best to go for accuracy instead of distance. Wood clubs will be your go-to for the tee on par-3 holes and on the fairway for longer par-5 plays. Here are our recommended wood clubs:

Bridgestone Tour B JGR (Silver)

Much like with the JGR driver mode, this club offers a decent amount of Distance to go along with a high amount of Forgiveness. For some holes, it’s probably best to be a bit shorter than longer, as long as the shot is accurate.

Ben Hogan GS53 (Silver)

We look at another Ben Hogan club model, as this time, we focus our attention on the GS53 wood model. This wood will give you a bit more Distance than the JGR, and doesn’t sacrifice that much Forgiveness. The JGR and the GS53 are excellent picks for newcomers to The Golf Club/PGA Tour franchise.

Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero (Gold)

Our last wedge that we will take a look at is the Gold Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero. The Sub Zero offers a good amount of Distance and Forgiveness and a high amount of distance control. To unlock this club, you’ll need to be sponsored by Callaway in MyPlayer mode, which might take some time. However, the time will be well spent, since this club offers a lot to both new and experienced players.

When looking for an iron, there are two attributes you want to focus on, Distance and Distance Control. Since irons will be primarily used to get the ball on the green, the key is to get an iron that will have the ability to get your there but with accuracy. With that said, let’s go over our picks:

Ben Hogan PTx Pro (Gold)

The Ben Hogan PTx Pro has a solid amount of Distance and Forgiveness. However, the PTx’s best attribute might be its fantastic ability to control the distance. The PTx Pro can be a great option for newcomers, especially those who have trouble controlling their shots on the fairway or rough.

Wilson D7 (Gold)

The Wilson D7 is essentially the same kind of club as the PTx Pro. Both clubs have the same Distance, Forgiveness, and Distance Control attributes, so which one you decide to pick is up to you. However, keep in mind that both are sponsorship rewards, meaning that you will have to earn either a Ben Hogan or Wilson club to receive one of these two clubs.

Callaway Mavrik Max (Purple)

If you don’t want to grind in MyPlayer, perhaps the Callaway Mavrik Max will help you. The Mavrik Max has a better Distance attribute than the PTx Pro and D7 models. However, its weaknesses come in the Forgiveness and Distance Control attributes. The Mavrik Max’s Distance Control attribute is lower than both the PTx Pro and the D7, but if you’re all about hitting the ball as far as you can, it’s doesn’t get much better than with this Callaway model.

Now we move to the wedges, which will be the go-to club for you in bunkers and heavy rough that’s close to the green. Let’s go over our recommended wedges for PGA Tour 2K21:

Ben Hogan Equalizer (Purple)

For wedges, the focus will be less on Distance and more on Shot Shaping and Swing Plane. The Ben Hogan Equalizer will do you just fine when it comes to Shot Shaping, without sacrificing Distance, Forgiveness, and Distance Control. The Equalizer could be better with its Swing Plane, but it’s a fine club regardless of the fact.

Bridgestone Tour B XW-1 (Purple)

When it comes to Shot Shaping, you can’t do much better than the Bridgestone Tour B XW-1. The B XW-1 has a fully maxed out Shot Shaping attribute and a high Swing Plane attribute. If you’re looking for a good wedge that will help you with Shot Shaping and Swing Plane, we recommend going with this club over the Equalizer. Or, you could go with our third choice: the Wilson Staff Model.

Wilson Staff Model (Purple)

The Wilson Staff Model has essentially the same attributes that the Bridgestone Tour B XW-1 does. Both have the same Shot Shaping and Swing Plane attributes, putting right on par (pun intended) with the XW-1. And considering that both clubs have the same cost (500 coins), which one you choose will be up to you.

Considering that there are different club attributes for drivers, woods, irons, and wedges, and you would probably assume that each putter is also unique. In this regard, you would be wrong. While there are several different putter models in PGA Tour 2K21, none of them have actual attributes. Because of this, no putter has an advantage over the other.

You can upgrade the default putter currently in your bag at any time, but that should be the absolute last thing you should focus on. Rather, your mind should be on what other clubs you plan on choosing.

PGA Tour 2K21 Review – For Purists And Newcomers Alike

  • First Released Aug 20, 2020 released

PGA Tour 2K21 builds off of the solid foundation of The Golf Club series, delivering a wonderful golf sim that's getting closer to the real thing.

By Steven Petite on August 24, 2020 at 11:00AM PDT

Sports games generally tend to be more arcadey than simulation, with easy-to-learn basic mechanics that make the experience breezy off the bat while also having enough depth to appeal to competitive players. HB Studios' The Golf Club series has consistently defied that mantra by embracing the exacting challenges and unpredictability of golf since its debut title in 2014. With the 2K Games rebrand, I thought PGA Tour 2K21 might aim to be more like EA's defunct golf series. Instead, what's here is a refinement of The Golf Club 2019, with welcome new features and mechanical tweaks that make for a smoother experience on the course.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, PGA Tour 2K21 is technically the fourth entry in The Golf Club series that was originally self-published by HB Studios. It's the second title to be published by 2K Games following The Golf Club 2019 Featuring PGA Tour, which 2K helped polish ahead of its release in 2018. The transition to the 2K Sports naming convention will likely garner more eyeballs, but for dedicated fans of The Golf Club like myself, you don't have to worry about HB Studios messing with the formula too much.

PGA Tour 2K21's major gameplay change comes with the motion you repeat over and over: your swing. HB Studios removed backswing tempo, which in turn promotes consistent, crisp ball-striking. Every golfer at all levels of play--including Tour pros--has different backswing timing, making this change quite welcome. Overall, I found it much easier to get "perfect" tempo swings. That's not to say the analog stick swing mechanics are too easy now. You still have to make the transition to your downswing in one smooth turn to hit the golf ball on target; the removal of backswing timing merely tosses one unnecessary variable out of the equation, freeing you up to get into a nice groove. Solid swings have a cleaner and fluid look in PGA Tour 2K21, with speed feeling more in-step with real life.

No Caption Provided

Unlike the extremely forgiving Tiger Woods games with the same control scheme, PGA Tour 2K21's swing mechanics rely on dialed-in precision, at least when you play on Pro settings and up--a requirement for online matches. Get lackadaisical in your downswing and you'll push the ball. Turn over too quickly and you'll pull it. Nailing the timing just right is quite satisfying and is key to posting low scores.

PGA Tour 2K21 has six swing difficulty levels--double the number from The Golf Club 2019--that can be further customized to fit your skill level. Beginners can turn swing timing off and enjoy a far more forgiving experience on one of the three amateur settings--though these are still more challenging than the EA Sports golf games. On the opposite side of the coin, enthusiasts who plan on competing online can play on Pro, Master, or Legend--a difficulty level that requires extremely consistent and precise swings to excel. It's nice that HB Studios added a larger range of difficulty settings without hindering the core experience. Golf is an incredibly challenging game, and PGA Tour 2K21 showcases this while also being more inviting to newcomers.

PGA Tour 2K21 certainly improves on the overall quality of the golf gameplay, but it's not without its misses. If you hit a wayward tee shot, the rough will be there to punish you. The thick grass is as unforgiving as previous games in the series, a fact that makes me feel conflicted. Tour venues tend to have nasty rough that penalizes golfers for missing the fairway, but PGA Tour 2K21's rough can quickly become relentless. On short approach shots where you have a wedge in your hand, the ball tends to come out cleanly with good timing if you club up. Outside of wedge territory and definitely when you start approaching 200 yards, the rough starts to get a bit wonky. Shots tend to come out low and can fall upwards of 50 yards short of where they would land out of the fairway. This fact, for anyone who plays golf, is a head-scratcher at best, especially when you consider that coming out of the rough sometimes makes your ball go further if you catch a "flyer." Even hybrids, which are designed to work well in the rough, perform poorly in "heavy rough" and sometimes even "light rough" lies. Incentivizing hitting the fairway is good, but the penalty for missing the rough doesn't exactly feel in-tune with real golf.

Other than the rough woes, PGA Tour 2K21 is the most impressive golf sim to date from tee to green. It gives you an arsenal of shot types to utilize from full swings to chips and everything in between, including complete control over the trajectory of your shot. The flight path of your ball can be shown in the air, much like television broadcasts of real events. There's also plenty of customization to be found for the HUD. From playing with a clean interface to seeing everything on screen from swing feedback to lie angle, PGA Tour 2K21 has all of the necessary bells and whistles, which should be helpful for those learning the ropes. You can adjust green speeds, tee position, wind, and fairway firmness, setting up each course even further to match your skill level. Spin on wedge shots, even with soft greens, still isn't as pronounced as an avid golfer would expect, but it allows you to flag hunt knowing that the ball will stop on a dime after one hop. And above all else, PGA Tour 2K21 has a fulfilling loop that managed to give me a jolt of excitement almost every time I hit a perfect shot.

Once you get on the green, putting remains the most tricky aspect of the series. Estimating breaks and the correct speed takes time to learn regardless of whether you have the grid-based slope on or off. A new putt preview system, which shows you the proper line, does help with the learning curve. By default, you get three previews per round on Pro difficulty (more on lower difficulties, and none on Master/Legend), but you can adjust that number as you see fit. As they say, though, "Drive for show, putt for dough." And PGA Tour 2K21 makes you work for birdies outside of tap-in range. One aspect of putting that can get frustrating are the cups, which routinely reject balls that hit the edges with perfect speed. Lip-outs are a part of golf, but I can't count the number of times I hit a putt that caught the edge and curled out, only to stop inches from the hole.

No Caption Provided

The solid on the course experience is bolstered by the incentive-filled overarching systems and deep game modes available in PGA Tour 2K21. The 2K rebranding brings MyPlayer to PGA Tour 2K21. From the outset, you create your own golfer using a robust set of creation tools and then head off on the race to the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour. You have the option to jump straight to the Tour or participate in Q-School and a shortened Korn Ferry Tour season to earn your Tour card. The Golf Club 2019 had the FedEx Cup already, so the basic progression is the same. That said, expanded use of the official license and better customization features make the career mode more compelling this time around.

PGA Tour 2K21 has 15 real championship courses and events. The Golf Club 2019's six TPC courses--Sawgrass, Scottsdale, Boston, Deere Run, Southwind, and Summerlin--return and are joined by four more TPC courses as well as popular tracks like Riviera, Quail Hollow, Copperhead, Atlantic Beach, and East Lake, the site of the Tour Championship. The remaining courses that fill out the 32-event race to the FedEx Cup are designed by HB Studios. At this point, the only complaint I have about the schedule is that golf's four Major championships aren't present, but hopefully that will change in future iterations.

Every course you step onto across the lengthy season--which you can play as one, two, three, or full four-round events--is a delight, especially the courses that the pros tee it up at each year. HB Studios has replicated these famous layouts to an authentic degree of accuracy. And this time around, you'll see real pros on the leaderboards, including Official World Golf Rankings number one player Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Tony Finau, Jim Furyk, and seven others.

No Caption Provided

Throughout the season, you'll establish rivalries with the pros, giving you the opportunity to best their performance over a short stretch and unlock new items. CPU performance varies based on your settings, so you can adjust their skill levels if you feel like things are getting too tough or too easy. Sponsorships come with various on-course objectives, which can then be renewed or switched after the contract ends. "Rank up" with a sponsor like TaylorMade, and you'll unlock new SIM Max equipment. This is a stark change from previous entries which only had generic clubs attached to skill level--now you can customize your 14-club set how you see fit with popular brands like TaylorMade, Callaway, and Bridgestone.

Critically, the new club sets mean that those playing with easier settings aren't losing out on distance, as more forgiving clubs--even the starting set--have close to Pro-level distances attached to them. The change is perhaps most profound in the wedge game, as you can now choose between more lofts to fill in the gaps between clubs to your liking. Each club has different attributes for distance, forgiveness, shot shaping, swing plane, and distance control, allowing you to further tweak what's in your bag. Golfers tend to be tinkerers--at least I am--so having more control over your gear adds to the overall strategy and preparation you can do ahead of rounds at various styles of courses.

Though PGA Tour 2K21 has 2K's Virtual Currency, it's lightly implemented in the career mode, even when it comes to brand-name clubs. There's no need to spend real cash on in-game currency to get new gear. You earn VC by playing rounds of golf and leveling up in any mode, which can then be used to purchase new equipment and outfits from brands like Adidas, Under Armour, and Ralph Lauren. But as mentioned, sponsorships also unlock new stuff you can equip without spending any VC. I have a full set of TaylorMade SIM Max clubs that I earned entirely through my sponsorship. It's a much friendlier approach to MyPlayer, especially since you cannot use VC to make your golfer better.

No Caption Provided

Overall, PGA Tour 2K21's approach to career mode is a welcome change of pace for sports games, but there's one glaring feature that might prove to be confusing for those who look at the cover art. Justin Thomas is the cover athlete, but you cannot play as him or any of the other pros in any game mode. You are locked to your created player. In fact, you will likely only see pictures of the Tour pros and their names on the leaderboards. I say likely because by default each tournament broadcast--your round of golf--is frequently interrupted by highlights from the pros on other holes. This is your only chance to watch them play in the game. The problem is that these interruptions are quite annoying and weirdly frequent. Thankfully, you can turn off the broadcast cutaways and just play your own game. I imagine the non-playable pros have something to do with the licensing agreements, but it's slightly frustrating to not be able to play a casual round as one of the best golfers in the world.

Speaking of presentation, while it won't come as a surprise to anyone who regularly plays sports games, the commentating in PGA Tour 2K21 is pretty bad. Luke Elvy and Rich Beem give solid performances, but after a few rounds, you'll start to notice a ton of repetition as well as repeated inaccuracies with regards to your strokes and position on the leaderboard. I wound up turning the commentary off halfway through my first season and listened to music while playing instead. It's admittedly better than the announcing from previous entries in the series, but it still gets old quite fast.

Outside of the official courses, PGA Tour 2K21 has a course designer and database that will soon be filled with user-created tracks. The course designer is fairly similar to The Golf Club 2019's, though it's more straightforward and generally easier to use. You pick from a set of themes, modify the terrain, and choose the layout, including the number of Par 3s, 4s, and 5s as well as green and fairway sizes. PGA Tour 2K21 auto-generates a course for you based on your selections, which you can then tweak to your liking, including removing and adding entirely new holes. You can add everything from specific plant and tree species to buildings and gates and much more, going as far as designing the scenery in the backdrop. It's a drag-and-drop system that's approachable while providing enough tools to make your own local course or a famous existing course to a tee. Courses made in The Golf Club 2019 can be imported into PGA Tour 2K21 as well.

No Caption Provided

At the moment, at least on PS4, the course designer certainly chugs, taking more than a few seconds at times to implement each change. I went back to compare the designer with The Golf Club 2019 and found that performance is about the same. While the designer certainly isn't as smooth as the rest of PGA Tour 2K21 experience, it's still an impressive design suite that's bound to bring tons of cool courses to life. And even if you don't feel like spending the time to design your own course, auto-generating new courses is a neat way to play on different layouts with the press of a button. Each time you generate a course, the layout changes, even if all of the settings you have selected are the same.

Online Societies also return in PGA Tour 2K21. You and your friends can set up a society--essentially a social hub where you coordinate tournaments and create your own seasons--and compete for the long haul. Ahead of launch, I wasn't able to test out the online features, but Online Societies was one of the cooler sports game modes in recent memory in The Golf Club 2019, and PGA Tour 2K21 has an official society to join right out of the gate to compete against the whole community. The use of VC in Online Societies seems a tad more questionable, with tournament entry fees, membership fees, and even donations to the society. Solo Societies, which had let you play custom seasons against the CPU, is sadly missing in PGA Tour 2K21, leaving players who prefer to play solo left with the PGA Tour season as their main game mode.

PGA Tour 2K21 improves on the mostly stellar foundation of The Golf Club series, offering the most realistic and pure golf experience in a game to date. There are still some minor annoyances that can temporarily take you out of the experience, but it offers a closer approximation of the actual PGA Tour schedule and a relaxing, streamlined approach to MyPlayer. For the most part, PGA Tour 2K21 admirably captures the peculiar magic of the game of golf.

  • Leave Blank
  • 15 real PGA Tour courses/tournaments make the FedEx Cup closer to the actual thing
  • Branded clubs, including TaylorMade and Callaway, give you more control over your golf bag
  • Swing mechanics are much improved, with more difficulty levels available to customize to your skill level
  • Course designer is easy to use, and auto-generating new courses is a breeze
  • Sponsorship and rivalry systems make career mode progression more compelling
  • Hitting from the rough still feels unrealistic
  • Cups are a bit too prone to lip-outs
  • Not being able to play as Tour pros in any mode is a bummer

PGA Tour 2K21 - Review

Links awakening..

I particularly enjoyed the experience of mastering windy conditions in PGA Tour 2K21. The first time I encountered winds pushing 15 miles per hour I struggled to four over par for the tournament (it was the Waste Management Phoenix Open and I appropriately served up my share of trash). This was because, despite the fact I had wind direction and speed indicators to assist me, I still needed to get a feel for clubbing up into a headwind or effectively using draws and fades to negate or ride more lateral gales, which eventually came through practice. Playing PGA Tour 2K21 on its medium difficulty ultimately felt like a really well balanced experience to me, someone who’s played almost every golf game released in the last 20 years, but it’s worth noting that all of the guides and timing windows can be adjusted or disabled according to your personal preference or aptitude level.

Not only does PGA Tour 2K21 present you with a very flexible and satisfying game of golf, it also lets you put your skills to the test across 15 of the best courses in North America. Famous parklands like TPC Scottsdale, Copperhead Course, and the Riviera Country Club are as pretty as a postcard – although admittedly they’re also just as static. It’s a shame that wayward shots hit into the gallery don’t send members of the crowd running for cover, and nor are extreme winds really reflected in the movement of the trees surrounding each hole. Aside from these atmospheric shortcomings, though, PGA Tour 2K21 certainly provides some beautiful backdrops for every round you play.

In between competitions you can sign up for performance-based sponsorship deals with licensed clothing and club manufacturers such as Adidas and Callaway, and while it’s certainly a bonus to gain a shiny new TaylorMade 3 wood every once in a while, the contract requirements of these deals can often be patronising if not downright insulting. Midway through the tour I was ranked number one with several tournament wins under my belt, yet the terms of my contract with Malbon stipulated that I had to finish in the top five in two upcoming tournaments in order to receive... a new bucket hat? Who negotiated this deal? If PGA Tour 2K21 had in-game managers, I certainly would have fired mine.

In fact, PGA Tour 2K21 seems to put an enormous amount of currency in polo shirts and sunglasses as rewards for completing its various career objectives. Admittedly it shouldn’t be a complete surprise since it’s a game about golf, after all, but I dare say that most players would be less concerned about getting their hands on yet another pair of grey khakis and more interested in earning a green jacket. Sadly, due to the lack of a Masters license, that’s one piece of clothing you can’t actually win.

Meanwhile, the Rivals system, which measures your performance against that of the 12 licensed pro golfers in PGA Tour 2K21 as you progress through the season, ultimately proves to be almost as completely arbitrary as the leveling system. It may have provided an interesting subplot to my season if, say, Ian Poulter had narrowly beaten me in a tournament and thus became my rival as a result, but sadly the system just isn’t dynamic in that way and fails to inject any sort of spice into the mix. Instead, you’re automatically assigned a rival until you’ve sufficiently outplayed them in a handful of tournaments, and then you just move on to the next in the predetermined queue. Perhaps proving just how superficial the Rivals system is, by the end of my first career season I had yet to technically ‘win’ my rivalry with Justin Thomas – this despite the fact I had almost 30 tournament victories to his one. I’m sorry, exactly what rivalry are we talking about here?

Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden

Even the 12 male professionals that are included in PGA Tour 2K21 aren’t actually playable; they simply exist as opponents in the PGA Tour mode, which seems pretty odd. I can’t really think of many other licensed sports games that prevent you from stepping into the shoes of your heroes, and I can only assume it’s down to some quirk in the actual licensing agreement. I hope 2K at least got a branded bucket hat out of the deal.

There's enough golf packed into PGA Tour 2K21 to exhaust a sitting president.

And, despite the undercooked career mode, there’s still enough golf packed into PGA Tour 2K21 to exhaust a sitting president. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to test them prior to launch, but the online societies should lengthen PGA Tour 2K21’s tail by letting you create your own tournaments or participate in official competitions curated by 2K. Similarly, the overhauled course creator should generate more enticing links than a Geocities homepage, assuming PGA Tour 2K21 is embraced by creative fans in the way The Golf Club games have been in recent years. I don’t personally have the time or the talent to get too deep into course creation, but I certainly look forward to seeing what other members of the community can come up with.

The Verdict

PGA Tour 2K21 is the most flexible and enjoyable golf game since EA’s Tiger Woods series was at its peak. While its career mode could have done with some spit and polish to its presentation and featured more meaningful rewards, it nonetheless serves as a solid 20-hour straightaway to what could prove to be the most thriving part of PGA Tour 2K21’s dance floor in the long term; the online societies. As far as establishing a new sports franchise goes (on the shoulders of the three Golf Club games that came before) this might not be the strongest shot off the tee, but it’s ended up in a very playable lie.

Pga tour 2k21 review: finally, a golf game that’s the best of both worlds.

  • Nick Menta ,

PGA TOUR 2K21 Key Art 1920x1080.jpg

“PGA Tour 2K21" is the deepest golf video game you’ve ever encountered.

That’s the benefit of giving an online community access to a custom course designer.

The rest – the official Tour, course and player licensing that’s been so heavily pushed in the marketing – is kind of just window dressing, albeit really attractive, sorely missed, nice-to-have-back window dressing.

Having spent the better part of the last week toying around with 2K21’s career mode, I can tell you that, judged as a PGA Tour simulation, this title returns golf gamers to the place where EA Sports left them previously. In that sense, we might actually consider it a push.

But if you take what gamers had before as a simulation and combine it with a full-blown course designer, then you have something else entirely. “PGA 2K21" is best judged then as the marriage of two features that had been previously kept separate.

As someone who’s been playing PGA Tour video games since 1999, this was the one thing I always wanted from EA Sports: the ability to create my own courses or to recreate courses that EA simply couldn’t license. Once I got that from HB Studios in “The Golf Club,” I found myself pining for what I had with EA: Tour branding, Tour pros, Tour courses.

This game, finally, has both.

EA’s long-running “Tiger Woods” title came to an end in 2013, and a rebooted offering headlined by Rory McIlroy was abandoned after a single release in 2015. That left gamers in the woods (no pun intended) for three years, after they’d grown accustomed to a yearly Tour release for two decades.

Filling the void was a lesser-known title, “The Golf Club,” from a lesser-known developer, HB Studios. “The Golf Club ” – a game focused on allowing users to create, play and share their own custom-designed golf courses – begat “The Golf Club 2" and what eventually came to be known as “The Golf Club 2019 featuring PGA Tour.”

That was the turning point. And not to disparage it – because I certainly spent enough time playing it – but “The Golf Club 2019 ” is, in retrospect, a (really good) half-step, a bridge to where we are now. The game, developed like its previous iterations by HB but this time published by 2K, was the first to feature Tour branding in three years, since EA’s “McIlroy ” release. It came with seven real-world courses, including TPC Sawgrass and TPC Scottsdale, and served as a starting point.

“ 2K21 " is really the final product, the completed version of “2019.” It’s what gamers hoped to get when the PGA Tour decided to get back into the video game business, and it’s what they have now two years later.

Career mode

As mentioned at the top, the marketing of “2K21 " has focused on its licensing agreements – with the PGA Tour, with tournament sponsors, with a list of pros, with 15 real-world courses, and with equipment and apparel manufacturers. It’s worth running through it. Here’s the real-world stuff in the game:

Courses (and tournaments)

  • Atlantic Beach Country Club
  • Copperhead Course at Innisbrook (Valspar Championship)
  • East Lake Golf Club (Tour Championship)
  • Quail Hollow Club (Wells Fargo Championship)
  • Riviera Country Club (Genesis Invitational)
  • TPC Boston (The Northern Trust)
  • TPC Deere Run (John Deere Classic)
  • TPC Louisiana (Zurich Classic)
  • TPC River Highlands (Travelers Championship)
  • TPC San Antonio (Valero Texas Open)
  • TPC Sawgrass (The Players Championship)
  • TPC Scottsdale (Waste Management Phoenix Open)
  • TPC Southwind (WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational)
  • TPC Summerlin (Shriners Hospitals for Children Open)
  • TPC Twin Cities (3M Open)

PGA Tour pros

  • Patrick Cantlay
  • Cameron Champ
  • Bryson DeChambeau
  • Sergio Garcia
  • Billy Horschel
  • Matt Kuchar
  • Kevin Kisner
  • Ian Poulter
  • Justin Thomas
  • Gary Woodland

Equipment and apparel

  • Bridgestone
  • Jack Nicklaus
  • Polo Ralph Lauren
  • Royal and Awesome
  • Tattoo Golf
  • Under Armour

You encounter these elements by working your way through career mode. You play events, you earn in-game currency, you spend that currency on clubs and apparel to spruce up your create-a-golfer. If that sounds a little too familiar, that’s because it is; it is very much a return to the career mode players received from EA Sports.

The advancements are largely rooted in making the golf courses look like they do during Tour events; so you’re getting a digital replica of the stadium built around the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale, just as one example. HB has also made an effort to make your tournament rounds feel a little like a PGA Tour broadcast, as gameplay will occasionally cut to highlights of what other players – like JT or Bryson or Sergio – are doing on the course. This idea works better on paper than in practice, as the cut scenes add little, don’t seem to be influenced by anything you’re actually doing, and take too long to load.

The Tour pros featured in the game also need to feel more like active rivals and competitors than what they are now – also-rans. That you can’t play rounds as the featured pros is also worth mention.

It’s why I’m calling career mode a push; its’s a return to what users had from a Tour title years ago.

That said, it’s wonderful to have back with this level of detail, the courses look terrific, and I’ve been glued to it for a week.

Course designer (Hey, you, read this)

Separately, the course designer remains difficult. There’s a steep learning curve if you want to get good at it, and it’s straight up intimidating at first pass. But there’s a reason it’s complicated. It’s the same designer the HB Studios team uses to create the game.

Here’s the good news, and “Golf Club ” veterans already know this: Even if you’re unwilling to dive into the designer yourself, you get to free ride on the work of others. This is the important part – the part they can’t really advertise.

Are you the guy or girl going, “What? No Augusta? And mostly a just a bunch of TPCs?”

Pay attention.

No, Augusta National, Pine Valley, and Cypress Point are not officially in this game. But did users in TGC 2019 recreate these layouts – tee for tee, green for green, bunker for bunker, down to the very yard, down to the very tree – and upload them to the game’s servers?

Yes. Yes, they did.

You can find all sorts of real-world recreations, from major-championship venues like Merion and Oakmont and Pebble Beach and St. Andrews to even your local muni. It just depends how much time someone had on their hands and what they were motivated to build. If someone created a course in “2019,” they can import into “2K21.”

That’s why this is the deepest golf video game you’ve ever encountered. There’s no limit to what you or anyone else can add to it.

So where does the title go from here? HB Studios producer Shaun West told GolfChannel.com last month that while no official decision has been made on the timing of a future release, he sees the benefits of a two-year development cycle. And just like “PGA Tour 2K21 " built on the foundation laid by “The Golf Club 2019,” it’s his hope that game just keeps getting bigger and more detailed, becoming an even closer PGA Tour simulation.

Of course, we have “2K21 " to enjoy for the next couple years. There are users doing the Lord’s Work with the course designer, and there are online societies that organize their own tournaments and seasons. If you’re new to the series, welcome to the rabbit hole.

Elden Ring Players Hate Shadow Of The Erdtree's Sealed Spiritsprings

Amazon prime day 2024 magic: the gathering deals, if fromsoftware makes another open world game, it needs a quest log.

The creators of the original  The Golf Club,  HB Studios,   has partnered with 2K Studios and the PGA league to produce PGA Tour 2K21 , the first installment of a series that will hopefully last for years to come . The game was released on August 21st, 2020.

RELATED:  5 Things That WWE 2K21 Needs To Fix (& 5 Things To Keep From 2K20)

The alternately-named chapters that led to  PGA Tour 2K21  were quality games but riddled with shortcomings, such as the lack of a putt power meter. However, in the newest game, many features of gameplay have been greatly improved . Here are some tips to cut some strokes off of your score.

10 Chipping Smart

The default shot a player is given when chipping on the green is meant to set up an easy 'up-and-down' putt. Thus, a player will automatically be shooting a chip that will  not  have a chance of landing in the hole.

If a player wants to try and 'hole-out' from their position off of the green with their chip, they are going to have to either extend the distance of the chip or club up. Make sure to anticipate the slight bounce following the ball's initial impact accordingly. Stronger clubs will have larger bounces so make sure the point of impact is an appropriate distance in front of the cup.

9 Plan Accurate Approaches

Depending on which club you use to approach the green, whether it be from the tee-box, fairway, rough, or bunker, a player needs to anticipate the resulting roll of the ball following impact. With lower irons and woods (lower meaning more powerful), a player may be wise to have their approach shot's point of impact on the fairway just before the fringe of the green, in order to give proper space for the ball to roll.

RELATED:  10 Best Super Mario Sport Games, Ranked (According To Metacritic)

On the other hand, with wedges and higher irons, there will be less roll and bounce after the point of impact. So, a player should aim their approach shots closer to the hole. A player should rarely aim directly for the pin unless it is a way of compensating for head-on wind.

8 Use Putt Previews Wisely

The putt preview is a terrific tool to use when first starting out. It allows a beginner to learn how slopes in the green affect the line of a putt, and it helps to avoid three-putt frustration. However, the putt preview function can also be considered as a crutch that is capping a player's skill and ability to improve.

There are no putt previews in online matchmaking. In order to not use putt previews as a crutch, players should only use them when they are completely necessary. For instance, use a preview when your final ranking is on the line or if a putt is absurdly long.

7 Use Clubs With Higher Forgiveness

Although the clubs players eventually unlock have better distance, shot shaping, and other attributes, most of the higher grade clubs have lower forgiveness. This metric represents how affected a player's shot will be by their swing speed.

For example, if a player has a slow swing, then their intended shot will be more harshly punished. So, a player should stick to clubs with higher forgiveness until they become more consistent with their swing speed execution.

6 Use 3 Wood Out Of Sand If Possible

A shot out of the sand with a 3 wood may have a point of impact of slightly less distance than say a shot with a 5 iron. However, the resulting roll of a 3 wood shot makes it so the overall distance of the shot is considerably farther than that of the alternative 5 iron shot.

RELATED:  Every NBA 2K Game Of The 2010s, Ranked From Worst To Best (According To Metacritic)

Nevertheless, if a player in the sand clubs up to a 3 wood and they see their expected distance is something like 3 yards, then they shouldn't take the shot because the ball won't make it out of the bunker. If it is a considerably deep sandpit go with the iron, but if it is relatively flat, then the 3 wood is the better choice.

5 Don't Add Max Arc

By holding the left trigger, players can alter the arc, fade, draw, and spin of a shot. If the wind is heavy, players should be careful of how much arc they put on a shot. The more arc a shot has, the more affected it will be by the wind.

Additionally, it is very easy to overcompensate the arc of a shot, which results in players having too shallow of an approach and too long of a putt. If a player decides to add arc, it's best to set it about halfway to three-quarters of the way up the scale.

4 Always Check Driver Shot In Tee Box If Default Club Is 'Higher'

In the image above, the player is automatically given a 3 wood in this hole's tee box, although the fairway is relatively wide and straight and could handle the distance of a driver. PGA Tour 2K21  frequently defaults to shots that avoid risk, but that gives players less birdy and eagle opportunities.

Therefore, it is smart to at least check what a shot with a driver or other 'lower' option may look like. Frequently, a shot with a driver can be highly beneficial to your score although it isn't the default suggestion.

3 Upgrade Driver ASAP

There are so many holes in PGA Tour 2k21  where a smidgen more distance on your drive can be the difference between a shot in the bunker and an ace. Therefore, players should look to upgrade their drivers as soon as possible.

However, drivers with longer distance most often come with lower forgiveness ratings. Players need to get consistent with their drive's swing speed before making an upgrade. Nevertheless, the drive is potentially the easiest type of shot in the game to master.

2 Be Wary Of Suggested Putt Power Percentage On Declines In Green

When facing a downward sloping green while putting, players need to be extra careful to not overpower their shot. Putting down a decline comes with different risks than putting up an incline.

For instance, when a player putts with slightly more power than is suggested against an incline, they will still have a chance of landing in the hole. On the contrary, if the player hits the ball with less  power than suggested, the ball will have zero chance of landing in the hole and will stop in front of the cup. On a declined putt, the reverse is true: too much power equals an almost definite miss while too little power can still lead to a successful putt.

1 Dress Well

The phrase "90% of feeling good, is looking good" is surely relevant to a player's performance in  PGA Tour 2K21.  With the game's abundance of clothing options , players should seek out the perfect outfit for their individual style.

Having their virtual golfer swagged out, or dressed in a funny costume, can help players enjoy the game, even though a triple-bogey. Less frustration equals less strokes.

PGA Tour 2K21 roster: all the key players and complete pros list

Familiar golfing names abound on the PGA Tour 2K21 players roster

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

The PGA Tour 2K21 roster brings both pros (quite literally) and cons. A decent number of real-life golfers are included in the game, some with proper likenesses – but sadly, and bizarrely, you can't actually control any of them. Still, if you’re going to keep them at bay in PGA Tour 2K21 tournaments it’s worth knowing the competition. Even if, in another curious trivia note, none of them are lefties. Odd! Anyway, here we profile all the key Pros on the PGA Tour 2K21 roster.

The cover star of the game is the PGA Tour 2K21 Pro you see most of and hear most about from the commentators in the game. A major winner in 2017, Justin Thomas enjoyed that year as his breakout year winning 5 times on the PGA Tour, including the in-game final goal of the FedEx Cup. Now one of the best players in the world, he's one of your top PGA Tour 2K21 Pro competitors.

Cameron Champ

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

One of the youngest and best players on the tour, Cameron Champ is already known as one of the biggest hitters going - he was the longest driver in the 2018-19 season - and has been recorded registering a near-130mph clubhead speed. That is fast. Surely one for a major - or several - in years to come.

Bryson DeChambeau

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

A golfer who has transformed their game and body over the past year and bit, or so, Bryson DeChambeau is hitting the fall farther and farther and currently owning the power game in golf. Watch out for booming drives and bulging biceps.

Matt Kuchar

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

The 2016 Olympic Bronze medallist is an ever-present on upper echelons of the Tour since turning pro and joining it in 2000. One of the most consistent players, particularly in Match-play, perhaps second only to Tiger Woods, he has a rounded swing, probably influenced by his tennis-playing youth. Always one to fear on the course.

Kevin Kisner

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

A great striker of the ball, Kevin Kisner is an underrated American golfer on the tour right now, having reworked his game after a deterioration in his swing. He now gives anyone a tough run on the course and is certainly one to look out for, with surges up the FedEx rankings and tournament leaderboards known to happen.

Gary Woodland

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

One of the longest hitters on the tour, Gary Woodland features a lot as a PGA Tour 2K21 pro - I've encountered numerous commentary lines about him during my in-game career. He's a major winner in the real-world and has one of the most well-rounded games - with a lean on power so expect him to be competing at the top for a good while.

Billy Horschel

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

A great iron player, and ball striker, Billy Horschel is a fierce competitor who loves to win. His play is supported by a great textbook swing that doesn't have many moving parts so is always hard to beat out of consistency if nothing else. On the tour, he's likely to be a consistent challenger for Majors and one to keep a close eye on in the next few years.

Ian Poulter

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

Though he's never quite done it at a real-life Major golf tournament, Ian Poulter is still a force to be reckoned with. Great under pressure, as demonstrated by his Ryder Cup performances, he's a gritty competitor who can grind you down. Plus he has a great collection of golf outfits - love them or hate them, they are memorable.

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

The first player of Tongan and Samoan descent to play on the Tour, Tony Finau is one of the standout characters and coolest guys on the PGA Tour 2K21 Pros list. He's a consistent player, and a big hitter known to reach above-200 mile an hour ball speeds; he can make mincemeat of the PGA Tour 2K21 courses , and his rivalry is a good one to overcome. He's such a cool dude, even the fictional in-game rivalry feels at odds with his character.

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

He of the most intriguing golf swings is present as part of the PGA Tour 2K21 pro list. Furyk is known as Mr. 58 due to his record-breaking - and frankly ridiculous - low round of 58 in 2016 at the Travelers Championship. He might only have one major win under his belt, but he's one of the most consistent golfers ever to grace the Tour.

Sergio Garcia

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

Arguably, the crispest iron hitter in the game, and best ball-striker out there, Sergio is a great addition to the 2K21 roster. His accuracy is well known, too, so to come out on top of your rivalry with him, you need to fire it right at the pin and be brave enough to take on aggressive routes of play.

Patrick Cantlay

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

Bringing his very successful amateur career into the professional game, Patrick Cantlay is one of the newest stars on the PGA Tour. His career has been hit by a bad back injury but he's come back to be one of the most underrated rising stars in the game with great iron play and a well-rounded, uncomplicated game that's tough to beat on his day.

The complete list of PGA Tour 2K21’s playable pros is here (including Jim Furyk!)

Late last week, we introduced you to video game Bryson —a svelte companion to the muscle-bound beast that was making mince meat (it’s high in protein!) of Colonial during the opening round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. Following cover star Justin Thomas and Matt “you don’t have to tip virtual caddies” Kuchar, “The Scientist” was the third playable PGA Tour pro unveiled for golf’s much-anticipated return to modern consoles, 'PGA Tour 2K21'. Over the course of the weekend, 2K Games slowly trickled out all nine remaining names, concluding during the final round on Sunday with the 2017 Masters champ, Sergio Garcia. The end result is the solid (minus some obvious big names) 12-man roster you see below. Choose your fighter.

Justin Thomas

Matt Kuchar

Bryson DeChambeau

Kevin Kisner

Ian Poulter

Gary Woodland

Billy Horschel

Patrick Cantlay

Sergio Garcia

Yes. We said Jim Furyk. Go ahead. Run around your living room pulling your own hair while screaming like Kevin McAllister. Get it out of your system.

RELATED: Kevin Durant spends an unsettling amount of time playing 'Rory McIlroy PGA Tour'

The most noticeable absentees are guys that were always going to be impossible to get. This isn’t Tiger Woods’ PGA Tour anymore, literally or digitally. It would have been nice to see the likes of Koepka, Fleetwood and Matthew Wolff involved, but the motion-capture guys probably had their hands full with Furyk’s swing anyway.

There is the glaring lack of a great villain, however. ‘Mortal Kombat’ had Scorpion. ‘Resident Evil’ had Nemesis. On paper at least, 'PGA Tour 2K21' seems to be missing that integral element, but let’s just wait and see. Maybe, just maybe Patrick Reed will make a cameo as the final boss.

Is PGA 2K23 better than 2K21? A golf expert‘s in-depth comparison

As a veteran golf gamer and sim enthusiast who has extensively played both PGA Tour 2K21 and the new 2K23 release, I can confidently say that 2K23 is a better, more polished game overall. However, the upgrades are more iterative refinements rather than game-changing revolutions. If you already enjoy 2K21 and aren‘t dying for new rosters and features, waiting for a price drop is reasonable. But for those ready to tee off with the latest offering, 2K23 is absolutely worth paying full price to upgrade your virtual golf experience.

Let‘s dive deep into the key improvements 2K23 brings over its predecessor:

Visual Presentation – Remarkably Realistic

The most immediately noticeable upgrade in 2K23 is the visual presentation – it simply looks more like actual golf on TV than ever before. Player models are far more realistic with enhanced textures, lifelike skin tones and authentic gear/apparel physics that elegantly move and react. Emotive facial expressions and fluid celebrations also help bring the pros to life. Environments are richer too – foliage density is increased for thicker natural settings and on-course objects have finer detail. Most impressively, lighting generates true-to-life shadows and reflections across dawn, daytime and dusk settings. When you combine all these gains with buttery smooth 60fps gameplay, no golf video game has ever achieved this level of visual realism.

Comparatively, 2K21‘s visuals now look dull and dated even just 2 years later. Trust me, once you see your first replay in 2K23, you‘ll be blown away by how much better it looks. The visual jump is akin to the tech progression seen in sports games between generations of consoles.

Refined Core Gameplay – More Skill Rewarding

Veteran players will be happy to know that 2K23 retains the same intuitive and responsive swing and shot mechanics core to the series. However, subtle enhancements to ball physics, club dynamics and player skill boards make the on-course action more authentic and rewarding of proper play.

The ball reacts more like the real thing, checking and releasing on greens based on factors like backspin, temperature and elevation in nuanced ways. Club face angle and impact point also influence launch angle and curve shape in a more accurate simulation. Player attributes like power and putting ability now have greater influence on shot outcomes to reward honing skills. Overall, the refined gameplay enhances the skill gap by demanding proper swing tempo, smart shot shaping, and expert reading of lies and wind. Casual players may struggle with the added realism, but for golf purists 2K23‘s refinements offer a heightened simulation experience.

Two Fun New Modes – Topgolf & Course Designer

2K23 intelligently expands the variety of play options with two new modes that provide engaging new experiences:

The popular driving range/mini golf hybrid has been authentically recreated in 2K23, offering a fun arcade-style competitive mode supporting up to 4 local/online players. The rules play out just like real-world Topgolf, with points awarded for accurately aiming shots at different color-coded targets. This fast-paced and social game mode is a great way to take a break from traditional golf and enjoy the 2K23 physics and skills in a casual environment against friends. After sinking hours into career and sim rounds, Topgolf is a welcome addition.

Course Designer

For players who want to try their hand at crafting their own dream course layouts, the Course Designer tools provide impressive depth and freedom. From sculpting fairways to dotting greens, the terrain shaping and object placement options enable stunning custom creations. While the learning curve is steep, the ability to build and share courses adds infinite replay value. I‘ve already enjoyed fantastic user-made courses exceeding EA‘s old PGA Tour offerings.

Upgraded Career Mode – More Progression Depth

MyCareer mode is expanded in 2K23 with greater depth for building up your custom pro golfer. A branching sponsorship system allows signing with brands like Adidas, Callaway and TaylorMade for perks and cash. Rivalries also develop organically with pros who challenge your ascent. And new side activities like taking on generated scenarios, playing practice rounds with coaches, and participating in pro-am events with celebrities provide fun new ways to hone skills and earn rewards. Combine the boosted career progression with enhanced training mini-games and 2K23 does a much better job keeping MyCareer engaging.

Expanded Roster – 14 Playable Pros

In terms of name recognition, 2K23 has a clear edge over 2K21 thanks to its expanded roster of 14 playable pros:

  • Tiger Woods
  • Justin Thomas
  • Rickie Fowler
  • Brooke Henderson
  • Will Zalatoris
  • Collin Morikawa
  • Lexi Thompson
  • Justin Rose
  • Xander Schauffele
  • Matt Fitzgerald

Cover athlete Tiger Woods rightfully gets top billing, with fellow stars like former #1 golfer Justin Thomas and fan favorite Rickie Fowler also making the cut. Furthermore, women‘s golf gets better representation with the inclusion of top 10 ranked pros Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson. While the 2K21 roster wasn‘t bad with 8 pros, 2K23 adds both quantity and star power that‘s appealing for any golf fan.

As fun novelties, NBA greats Michael Jordan and Steph Curry are now playable as bonus legends in 2K23. Unfortunately, their presence seems more like an attempt at crossover promotion with the NBA 2K series than meaningful additions. Neither basketball icon offers any unique skills or storyline purpose. Frankly I‘d rather have seen other real golfers like Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau or Dustin Johnson instead, but the core PGA roster is still quite strong.

Multiplayer Enhancements – Online Societies

Those wanting to take their skills online will appreciate 2K23‘s improved offerings. Private online societies allow groups of players to organize scheduled events, tournaments and full seasons while tracking stats. It‘s a great addition that enables playing consistent rounds with friends and rivals. Casual matchmaking is still available for quick pickup games too. As a big online player, I‘m thrilled by the added league and tournament options. The only thing missing now is a proper spectator viewing mode to watch other matches in progress.

In closing, I can wholeheartedly recommend PGA Tour 2K23 as a must buy for golf gaming fans, especially those who have been patiently waiting for a true next-gen experience. The combination of visual leap, added content and incremental improvements make 2K23 definitively superior to its already solid predecessor. While $70 is still steep, you get plenty of extra gameplay value over 2K21. Customization lovers can also purchase bonus DLC player packs and courses.

However, more casual players who still enjoy playing 2K21 with buddies or solo shouldn‘t feel compelled to immediately upgrade. 2K23 is undoubtedly better, but not radically different. Waiting for a discount down the road is reasonable if you aren‘t dying for the latest rosters and refinements. Regardless, with its exclusive licensing of the PGA Tour and its namesake stars, the 2K golf franchise remains the undisputed champion of virtual golf. 2K23 extends that dominance to current hardware and will satisfy both veterans and newcomers to the fairway.

The most consistent 3-woods of 2024, according to robot testing

  • Follow on Twitter
  • Follow on Instagram

TaylorMade's Qi10 Max fairway wood earned high marks on off-center strikes during robot testing.

Jonathan Wall/GOLF

For most weekend golfers, the driver is the most-used club off the tee by a wide margin. Boasting the largest profile and plenty of distance , it can be a total game-changer, provided you’re playing something that’s built to enhance your strengths and mitigate common misses .

But what happens when the driver misbehaves? As much as we’d all like to be able to work on those issues on the course, it pays to have a reliable secondary option off the tee. And possibly from the fairway.

This is where a consistent 3-wood can be a godsend.

For the latest round of robotic testing with Golf Laboratories’ swing robot, we put 2024 3-woods under a microscope to see how they performed at 95 mph. More specifically, how each performed on heel and toe misses. Let’s go to the numbers.

( How we calculate: Each 15-degree 3-wood is tested using a 3-point face mapping. We hit 6 balls out of the toe and heel and then compared the data to the geometric center.)

TaylorMade Qi10 Max | 7.6 yards of distance dropoff between geometric center and the other mishit locations

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

TaylorMade Qi10 Max Custom Fairway Wood

Insights: Saw almost no distance loss on heel strikes at 0.8 yards. To put that number into perspective, almost every 3-wood tested had a carry distance loss delta between 10-15 yards on the same heel miss. Toe strikes lost 14.4 yards, which was closer to the mean. An excellent option if you live in the heel.

Cobra Darkspeed LS | 8.4 yards

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

Cobra DarkSpeed LS Custom Fairway Wood

Insights: A reverse of the Qi10 Max with a small carry loss delta of just 2.7 yards on toe strikes. Only one other fairway wood (Ping G430 LST) came within 3 yards of Cobra’s toe strike number. Lost 14 yards on heel strikes, placing it within the middle of the pack.

PXG 0311 Black Ops | 9.9 yards

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

PXG 0311 Black Ops Custom Fairway Wood

Insights: One of the more consistent fairway woods to undergo testing. The carry loss delta between heel and toe was less than 2 yards, meaning you could miss it off the heel or toe and see similar distance numbers. Toe misses saw carry distance drop by 9 yards, while heel strikes recorded a respectable carry delta at 10.8 yards.

Cobra Darkspeed Max | 10 yards

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

Cobra DarkSpeed Max Custom Fairway Wood

Insights: While not as consistent as the PXG, Cobra’s Max model also saw tighter carry loss deltas across the heel and toe areas. Toe strikes drop distance by 7.7 yards — one of six fairway woods to record a single-digit number — compared to 12.7 yards on heel misses. Fairway wood lives up to the Max name.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond | 10.9 yards

best 3 wood pga tour 2k21

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond Custom Fairway Wood

Insights: One of two low-spin offerings to make the list. Saw Max-esque carry loss deltas on heel and toe strikes, an impressive feat for a fairway wood designed with a more forward center of gravity. Toe strikes ended up near the middle of the pack at 13.4 yards compared to 8.3 yards of distance loss out of the heel. Triple Diamond was one of only three 3-woods to record a single-digit number in the heel quadrant.

Nine things to know: Royal Troon

13 Min Read

Need to Know

Change Text Size

Golf’s oldest major is returning this week to a treasured venue for its 152nd edition. This marks The Open Championship’s 10th time visiting Royal Troon, and it comes 101 years after the tournament was first played there. World Golf Hall of Famers Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Tom Weiskopf are among the champions at Royal Troon, which is best known for the tiny, but treacherous, Postage Stamp par 3.

Before The Open gets underway, here are nine things you need to know about the course.

1. The Ayrshire Coast

Royal Troon is situated on Scotland’s west coast, on the far side of Glasgow. While not as well known as Scotland’s East Lothian, this region still offers some of the game’s richest links.

Troon is located along the sandy, windswept coast of the Firth of Clyde, a large bay framed by Northern Ireland to the south and the Kintyre Peninsula to the north that opens up to the North Atlantic. Royal Troon is at the midpoint of a 21-mile stretch of shorefront dunes land that includes such wonderful layouts as Prestwick, St. Nicholas, Western Gailes, Dundonald Links, Gailes Links, Irvine GC and West Kilbride.

2. Its evolution

Royal Troon is now a 45-hole private club that abuts an active commuter train line on its eastern flank. It occupies the crumpled, sandy dunes land between the shoreline and what used to be farmland, and its ninth green is only 600 yards from the main runway at Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

A look at the first hole at Royal Troon. (David Cannon/Getty Images)

A look at the first hole at Royal Troon. (David Cannon/Getty Images)

Royal Troon has evolved from an initial six-hole layout designed in 1878 by Old Tom Morris protégé Charlie Hunter. Six years later, it was expanded to 18 holes by club professional George Strath. A major refinement came in 1910 at the hands of 1883 Open Champion Willie Fernie, whose work created the current routing and what quickly became two of the course’s most famous holes, the Postage Stamp par-3 eighth, and the par-4 11th hole known as “Railway” because of its proximity to the rail line, which forms an uncomfortably-close boundary. Royal Troon’s Old Course derived much of its more demanding bunkering and playing character in 1922 through an extensive renovation by five-time Open Champion and (future) World Golf Hall of Famer James Braid. That came a year before Troon hosted its first Open, which saw England’s Arthur Havers upset defending champion Walter Hagen by one shot.

The club’s other 18-hole layout, the Portland Course, circulates inland, to the east and south, and owes its present routing to a fresh 1921 design by Alister MacKenzie, another World Golf Hall of Famer. The club also has a nine-hole, par-3 layout called Craigend. Troon’s main clubhouse, aligned immediately behind the 18th hole of the Old Course on a perpendicular axis, is a classic stone Victorian structure designed in 1888 by Glasgow-based building architect Henry Edward Clifford. The club received its “royal” designation as part of its centenary celebration in 1978.

3. Three in one

The Old Course at Royal Troon offers a variety of experiences in a single round.

It’s best to get ahead early at Royal Troon, then simply hang on for dear life. The first six holes play downwind over crumpled terrain, and the opening trio consists of three short par 4s all under 400 yards.

Two of the next three holes are par 5s that play downwind, usually reachable in two despite measuring 599 yards and 623 yards, respectively.

The next six holes, by contrast, amble through sand dunes and steeper terrain at the far end of the golf course. The start of the back nine presents two of the hardest long par- s in championship golf, thanks to narrow fairways, a prevailing headwind from the left and out-of-bounds close in on the right. Things don’t get much easier for the final six holes, a brutal finish that continues the trek into the breeze. The par-3 17th measures more than 240 yards, with players hitting long irons (or more) to a tabletop green. The finishing hole, which measures nearly 460 yards, features a heavily bunkered fairway.

The five par 4s on the front nine have an average length of 393 yards; on the back nine, the six par 4s average 472 yards – a 79-yard gap that’s exacerbated by the fact that many of them play into the wind.

“From the 10th tee onwards, it's a long way home,” said Colin Montgomerie, a longtime Royal Troon member.

4. A new look

British golf designer Martin Ebert has been Royal Troon’s consulting architect for more than two decades. It's a role he holds at several other Open rota courses, including Turnberry, Royal Portrush, Carnoustie, Royal Lytham & St. Annes, Royal St. George’s, Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool.

For this year’s Open Championship, Ebert’s edits included a half-dozen back tees that added 201 yards to the course. The three par 5s have all been lengthened. The course has been lengthened 2.8% since it last hosted The Open eight years ago, which corresponds exactly to the additional 2.8% of distance the average PGA TOUR player has gained in that span.

Some modest bunkering was added to the landing areas on several holes, as well. Along the way, the club’s nine-hole, par-3 course, Craigend, was dramatically redesigned. It also was moved to find higher, drier ground and provide target greens for the temporary practice range for The Open.

Royal Troon spectator infrastructure has also been expanded to accommodate an expected 250,000 spectators for the week – as many as 45,000-50,000 per day during the championship rounds. The viewing stands feature 13,300 seats, the largest of which will overlook the 18th fairway. That grandstand will hold more than 4,000 people.

Course superintendent Billy McLachan will have his full crew of 38 at the ready, supplemented by a dozen other staff and volunteers from the R&A and other clubs.

5. Postage Stamp

Royal Troon’s shortest hole also is its most famous.

The par-3 eighth is only 123 yards long, the shortest of any hole in The Open rota. From a platform tee above sandy broken ground, golfers target a tiny green that’s just 2,500 square feet.

The small pedestal of a putting surface is framed by five intensely deep bunkers and steep slopes of short grass that repel mishits. The hole heads due west, with the prevailing wind coming in from the player’s right. It is usually the first shot of the day that a player is hitting into the wind, and the short approach requires him to control both his distance and trajectory. On a calm day, the hole requires nothing more than a wedge. The wind can necessitate a mid-iron, however.

“You're playing downwind for seven holes then you have to turn around and hit off this elevated tee to this green that looks like the size of this table into the wind,” said Justin Leonard, who won the 1997 Open at Royal Troon.

Gene Sarazen was 71 years old when he aced the hole in the 1973 Open Championship (he holed a bunker shot for birdie the following day, playing the hole in three strokes for the two rounds he played that week).

“For many years, the Postage Stamp hole had haunted me,” Sarazen once told the Palm Beach Post. “When the clubhead came into contact with the ball, I had the same feeling when I had my double-eagle (at Augusta National) in 1935. When the crowd roared I realized that the ball was in the hole. I knew there was no better way to close the books on my tournament play.”

Herman Tissies made a 15 on the hole in 1950, needing 12 strokes to get out of a greenside bunker.

No. 8 even derailed Tiger Woods in his first Open as a professional. He was making a serious final-round charge after a Saturday 64 vaulted him into contention, but he overshot the green and made a triple bogey.

The short hole played slightly over par in 2016, with the field averaging 3.1 strokes. Despite not having any water, it played slightly more difficult than TPC Sawgrass’ island-green 17th that year (3.09 to 3.02).

"When the wind is rollicking in from the sea, as it so often is, this is scarcely a hole for the chap whose nerves are fidgety,” George Trevor wrote in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle back in 1923. It still holds true today.

While the Postage Stamp can befuddle players in more subtle ways, Royal Troon’s 11th hole hits them with a show of brute strength.

The 490-yard par 4 plays even longer because of the prevailing wind, and thick gorse and out-of-bounds wait on each side of the fairway to deliver a harsh penalty. This hole, nicknamed “Railway,” is among the most difficult at any Open venue.

Stretched to its limit with a back tee hard against the eastern boundary wall that separates the golf course from the train tracks, the hole heads straight northwest into the teeth of the wind.

At the tee shot landing zone some 300 yards away, the fairway starts to narrow down from 35 yards to 28. The out-of-bounds stakes along the rail line are just 20 yards from the fairway’s right side.

The tracks are even tighter to the right side of the green, but players who shy away from them must contend with a deep pot bunker that guards the green’s front-left corner. The slightest imprecision in ball striking is grievously punished, such as in the first round of The Open in 1962 at Troon, when defending U.S. Open champion Jack Nicklaus took a 10 here on his way to an 80.

The hole played to a 4.6 scoring average in 2016, making it the hardest hole on the PGA TOUR that year.

7. A long history

Troon has been quite the stage through nine Open Championships. The first one in 1923, saw Englishman Arthur Havers prevail over defending champion Hagen by a single stroke. Hagen went on to win the 1924 Open Championship, and then two more (1928, ’29).

Perhaps the biggest surprise of that first Open at Royal Troon, however, was the fact that 1922 U.S. Open champion Gene Sarazen failed in final qualifying to make the championship at all; in those days, having just won a major did not spare you from having to play your way into the championship just like everybody else.

South Africa’s Bobby Locke won his second consecutive Open Championship in 1950 at Royal Troon, winning what would become the second of four claret jugs he claimed in his remarkable career. With his flat cap, plus-fours, hickory shafted putter, and at times painfully slow play, he was a powerful presence on the course. His win at Troon came during a streak from 1947 through 1950 that saw him win 11 times in 59 appearances on the PGA TOUR.

When The Open returned to Royal Troon 12 years later, fans saw another Hall of Famer successfully defend his title. Arnold Palmer won the 1962 Open a year after claiming the claret Jug at Royal Birkdale. Massive crowds cheered Palmer as he dominated Troon with a winning total of 12 under par, six shots better than runner-up Kel Nagle. (Palmer lost to Nagle by a shot two years earlier at St. Andrews, halting Palmer’s bid for the Grand Slam after he won that year’s Masters and U.S. Open).

Having convinced fellow American pros to join him in playing the event, Palmer’s presence gave a powerful boost to the championship and to the whole business of British golf in general.

Tom Weiskopf’s win in the 1973 Open Championship at Troon came in the middle of a torrid nine-week stretch that saw him win five times – at Colonial, Charlotte, Memphis, The Open and the RBC Canadian Open. It was the lone major championship for Weiskopf, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame this year.

Nobody carried the weight of more expectations into the Open Championship in 1982 than a young Bobby Clampett. And after rounds of 67-66 (11 under par), he held a five-shot lead going into the third round. It appeared those high hopes for the 22-year-old would be validated. But rounds of 78-77 on the weekend brought him tumbling back to earth. Clampett was never the same, and Tom Watson won to continue his incredible record in The Open. By successfully defending the next year, Watson completed a remarkable nine-year stretch that saw him win five Open Championships.

8. Recent opens

Mark Calcavecchia added another chapter to Greg Norman’s major letdowns by beating him in a four-hole aggregate playoff in 1989 (Australia’s Wayne Grady, who’d go on to win the 1990 PGA, also was in the playoff). Calcavecchia holed a 50-foot par putt on the 11th hole, then birdied 18 to join the playoff.

Norman shot a course-record 64 in the final round, which looked like it would be enough to overcome a seven-shot deficit to Grady, the 54-hole leader. Not even two birdies by Norman on the playoff’s opening two holes could secure a win, in large measure due to a disastrous final hole (the 18th) that saw him pick up without finishing after finding two bunkers and hitting his third shot out-of-bounds into the clubhouse area.

Justin Leonard was one of the game’s young stars when he won the 1997 Open Championship at 25 years old. He won the U.S. Amateur, NCAA Championship and had two wins apiece in the Western and Southern amateurs during his decorated amateur career. He won twice on the PGA TOUR before arriving at Royal Troon, as well.

A final round 65 closed a five-shot deficit behind Sweden’s Jesper Parnevik, who ended up in second place, three shots back, with Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke.

Todd Hamilton was still glowing in the aura of his first PGA TOUR win at The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches earlier that season when he came to Royal Troon in 2004 for the Open Championship. He consistently recovered greenside with pars by chipping with a hybrid 3-wood and won a four-hole aggregate playoff with South Africa’s Ernie Els.

The Open Championship in 2016 saw Royal Troon stage an epic final round, final pairing showdown between Phil Mickelson and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson. Shot for shot, birdie for birdie, they parried each other’s shot making down the stretch, with Stenson’s 63 besting Mickelson’s 65 and tying the record for lowest-ever major score. That left Stenson at a major championship record 20-under par, one better than Mickelson and an amazing 14 shots better than third-place finisher J.B. Holmes.

9. What to watch for

Watching on TV at home, the impact of an Open Championship played on a true links course can be very strong, if at times controversial. The grass is browned out, the bounces wild and seemingly unfair at times, the wind is always a major factor, and the natural setting becomes part of the charm and the mystique of a round rather than a simple frame or background. These are all takeaways that could enhance one’s appreciation of golf at one’s home course considerably.

Golf aesthetics are a tricky thing. For those accustomed to a lush green landscaped lawn, Royal Troon will take some getting used to. But as Martin Ebert says, Royal Troon “has a special quality to it, due as much to the strength of its holes as to its natural setting.”

Small wonder the club carefully metes out its guest tee times. A round here is a treasured component of any Scottish golf journey.
