Dispatch is a jam band that formed in Middlebury, Vermont, US, but is primarily based out of Boston, Massachusetts. The band has been classified in several genres such as indie folk, roots rock, and reggae fusion.

Dispatch was formed in 1996 by singer/multi instrumentalist Chad Urmston, drummer Brad Corrigan, and vocalist/multi instrumentalist Pete Francis Heimbold. The members formed the band while they were attending Middlebury College and gained a following around campus by playing local shows throughout their years at school. After graduating from college the band relocated to Boston, Massachusetts and began touring regularly. The band were known for their innovative live performances that contained extended jam sessions and displays of their versatility as musicians, which included members constantly switching up their instruments they were playing. Although the band was not initially under a major label, their music gained attention through word of mouth and peer-to-peer file sharing sites like Napster.

The band released their debut album “Silent Steeples” in 1996. The album was less intricate than their later albums and consisted of mainly folk rock songs. The album consisted of catchy melodies and contained guitar rhythms and solos that were presented in a style similar to flamenco music. In 1997 Dispatch released the album “Bang Bang”, which showed the band using a wider range of instrumentation compared to their debut album and incorporating more progressive and intricate musical elements.

In 1999 the band released their third album “Four-Day Trials”. The album showed Dispatch performing their music in a more funk and reggae oriented way. The album also contained an interesting cover of the Beastie Boys’ song “Root Down”. The band released their fourth album “Who Are We Living For?” in 2000. The album conveyed a more rock vibe than their previous albums and also contained strong political undertones that were not present in previous recordings. The album also contained a cover of Rage Against the Machine’s song “Bulls on Parade”.

After the band released “Who Are We Living For?” they toured extensively in order to support the album, but their was later a tension amongst the members of the band, which caused them to go on an indefinite hiatus. Before the band went on a hiatus they had planned to perform one last show in Boston. The band had expected around 20,000 – 30,000 people to show up for the show, but around 166,000 people came from all over the world to see the Dispatch concert. During their break from Dispatch, each member pursued a different musical endeavor apart from one another. Urmston formed the group, State Radio, while Corrigan and Heimbold pursued solo careers.

In 2007 the band reunited for benefit concert at Madison Square Garden and in 2011 they embarked on a full-fledged reunion tour. In 2012 the band released their first album in 12 years called “Circles Around the Sun”. The album contained mixing and production work from Adam Young of Owl City. The album also did well on the Billboard charts reaching the No. 24 position on the US Billboard 200. Since their reunion the band has had the opportunity to play on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as well as to participate in Dave Mathews Band’s “DMB CARAVAN”. Apart from making music and touring, Dispatch is highly involved in charity work and has formed their own non-profit company, Amplifying Education.

Live reviews

American rock band, Dispatch, are a unique and intriguing entity. During their initial period of activity, between 1996 and 2002, the rootsy jam band found a devoted following but never became a commercial success; not even one minor hit single. They become something of a cult phenomenon, especially during their near-decade long hiatus between 2002 and in 2011,during which there were only sporadic shows. I first discovered them off the back of their epic double album, All Points Bulletin, of which the second disc featured the now legendary farewell free gig to over 100,000 fans in America. I loved it and always hoped to get the chance to see them live. So when they announced that they were not only reuniting but coming overseas to the UK for the first time ever, I was ecstatic. The jam rockers didn’t disappoint, playing essentially a greatest hits set, alongside new material from their comeback EP, to a packed Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London. Their brand of beach-ready, soulful rock is divisive on record, especially their forays into reggae and hip hop, but live the trio’s talents shine through. Songs like ‘Elias’ and, in particular, ‘The General’ feature fantastic melodies and are two of the great US indie rock songs. Real commercial success still evades them, but who needs it when your live following is so widespread.

My favorite concert so far this year!

Wonderful vibe from everyone in all three bands and the audience.

The venue was perfect for a mild, summer evening in SD. A light breeze with no need for a sweater.

The light show was excellent and the bands played with abandon.

Truly enjoyable!

AMAZING. Such a tight band and performance. Still so good. Played a range of old faves and their newer things. So much smoke on the smoke machine I lost sight of the drummers. Such a feel-good performance. Love, life.

Thank you !!!

Transforming rail: More convenient and sustainable train travel in the EU

The use of Wi-Fi and roaming in train and metro stations, and in public spaces

Travelling by train in Europe is becoming more convenient and sustainable thanks to recent EU initiatives. New regulations for the trans-European transport network  (TEN-T) to improve rail connectivity and make travel greener have recently entered into force. This means better and more efficient rail services across Europe .

The EU's Action Plan to boost long-distance and cross-border passenger rail services is a key part of these efforts. It aims to double high-speed rail traffic by 2030 and triple it by 2050 . Launched in 2021, this plan focuses on removing obstacles, improving interoperability, modernising passenger rail infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of services across EU countries.

To further support cross-border travel, the European Commission has announced its support for 10 pilot projects to boost cross-border rail services . This will improve cross-border rail connections across the EU and make travel faster, easier and more affordable.

Young travellers can particularly benefit from the DiscoverEU  programme, which regularly offers free travel passes to 18-year-olds to explore Europe by train . This programme encourages cultural exchange and highlights the environmental advantages of rail travel. The next call for applications should be published in autumn 2024.

Passenger rights are also a significant focus of the EU’s transport policy. Travellers in Europe are well-protected in case something goes wrong during their trip. EU passenger rights  cover delays, cancellations, and accessibility issues.

The EU is committed to making train travel a top choice by improving regulations, creating ambitious plans, and supporting special programmes. These efforts aim to make rail travel more sustainable, efficient, and well-connected across Europe.

Powerful former North Dakota lawmaker pleads guilty to traveling to Europe to pay for sex with minor

Ray Holmbert.

FARGO, N.D. — A high-profile former North Dakota lawmaker who was one of the most powerful members of the Legislature pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to a charge that he traveled to Europe with the intent to pay for sex with a minor.

Ray Holmberg, 80, of Grand Forks, was indicted in October 2023 for travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual activity and receipt and attempted receipt of child sexual abuse material. The Republican served more than 45 years in the North Dakota Senate before resigning in 2022. He initially pleaded not guilty and a trial was scheduled for September.

Under a plea agreement he signed in June, Holmberg agreed to plead guilty to the former charge, and prosecutors would move to dismiss the latter and recommend a sentence at the low end of the guideline range.

The travel charge carries maximum penalties of 30 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and lifetime supervised release.

In the plea agreement, Holmberg acknowledged that from around June 2011 to November 2016, he “repeatedly traveled from Grand Forks, North Dakota to Prague, Czech Republic with a motivating purpose of engaging in commercial sex with adolescent-age individuals under the age of 18 years.”

Holmberg has been under numerous conditions of release, including travel restrictions, location monitoring and the surrender of his passport.

On Friday, the pretrial services officer filed a report saying Holmberg hadn’t met those conditions.

She wrote that he was verbally reprimanded and reminded of his pretrial release conditions after he left his residence once and also visited an adult novelty store, each without approval. He also “continuously” accessed the internet for unapproved reasons and did not allow updates and maintenance to the monitoring software on his cellular device, she said.

In May, Holmberg admitted to using alcohol after testing positive. Later that month, he was told to remove an unapproved iPad from his home, and the judge added a condition restricting Holmberg’s access to electronic devices.

Since then, he continued to access the internet for unapproved reasons, the officer wrote.

“Due to the statutory mandate of detention, respectfully, the defendant is not viewed as a suitable candidate for self-surrender,” U.S. Pretrial Services Officer Christine Argall wrote.

Holmberg’s attorney, Mark Friese, declined an interview request. Holmberg was not arrested.

Former U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon said the report is a routine filing but the alleged violations are serious, given the nature of Holmberg’s case.

“I am particularly troubled by the idea that he’s accessing the internet on unapproved devices that are not being monitored. That is really concerning when you’ve got somebody facing the charges of the type he was facing,” Purdon said. It is not unusual that Holmberg wasn’t arrested, he added.

Holmberg served in the state Senate from 1976  until mid-2022 . He initially announced he wouldn’t seek reelection, but  he resigned  following reporting from The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead that he exchanged dozens of text messages with a man in jail  for child sexual abuse material .

For many years, Holmberg chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee, which writes budgets. He also chaired the Legislative Management panel, which handles various business between biennial sessions. That job let him approve his own travel.

Records obtained by The Associated Press showed Holmberg  took dozens of trips  throughout the U.S. and to other countries since 1999. Destinations included cities in more than 30 states, as well as Canada, Puerto Rico and Norway.

Earlier this year, the North Dakota School Boards Association  returned about $142,000  to the state and ended its role in the Global Bridges teacher exchange program months after releasing travel records following Holmberg’s indictment that showed he  utilized state funds  when he traveled to Prague and other European cities in 2011, 2018 and 2019.

It’s unclear whether the misconduct alleged by authorities occurred during any of those trips.

The factors in Holmberg’s case make it arguably the most significant political scandal in North Dakota history, Purdon said.

“You have a very high-profile politician. You have literally the worst allegation you possibly could come up with, the sexual abuse and rape of a child,” he said. “And then you have the idea that tax dollars paid for the plane ticket.”

How are Olympic basketball rules different from NBA rules?

Portrait of Duane Rankin

It's a different game.

Team USA has 12 NBA players, but the team is competing for a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics under international/FIBA rules.

The three noticeable differences between NBA and international rules are the three-second rule, basket interference and the distance of the 3-point shot line.

Here is a breakdown of the differences between the NBA and international rules.

3-point line : It's 6.75m (6.60 on baseline) in FIBA compared to 7.24 meters (6.70m on baseline) in NBA.

Three seconds: NBA players aren't allowed to stay in the three-second area if a player is not actively guarding an opponent. In FIBA, players can stay in the lane as long as they want.

Basket interference: In FIBA, players can knock or tap the ball off the rim once the ball hits the rim. That's not allowed in the NBA.

Fouls: Players get five fouls in the Olympics, six in the NBA.

Court dimensions: International (91’ 10” x 49’2.5), NBA (94×50).

Quarters: 10 minutes for Olympics, 12 minutes for NBA

Timeouts: There are five timeouts in the Olympics (two in the first half, three in the second and teams can only use two timeouts in the last two minutes of the 4th quarter. Teams have seven timeouts in the NBA.

Traveling: A player can catch the ball in the NBA and take a step before dribbling. In FIBA, unless the player pivots in place, they must put the ball on the floor before taking a step. The player can also take steps and dribble simultaneously.

Journey cancel 2024 UK and Ireland 50th anniversary tour

The group are currently on the road in the US

Journey performing live on stage

Journey have cancelled their UK and Ireland 50th anniversary arena tour – you can find all the details below.

The ‘Don’t Stop Believin” band had been due to embark on their ‘Freedom Tour’ this autumn with special guests  Cheap Trick .

Tickets for the run of gigs – which included a stop at The O2 in London – went on sale back in March. Now, it has been confirmed in a brief statement that the 11-date trek has been axed.

“Due to circumstances beyond the band’s control, Journey’s UK and Ireland tour is unfortunately cancelled,” the message reads (via Radio X ). “Refunds will be made from your point of purchase.”

Journey have not yet announced the news on their official social media accounts. However, the shows have been listed as cancelled on Ticketmaster . Their planned London concert has also been removed from The O2’s website .

The scrapped UK and Ireland leg would have followed Journey’s current run of North American stadium shows with Def Leppard , which is set to conclude early next month.

Journey’s cancelled UK and Ireland tour dates are:

OCTOBER 30 – Utilita Arena, Cardiff 31 – Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham

Recommended

NOVEMBER 02 – OVO Hydro, Glasgow 04 – SSE Arena, Belfast 05 – 3Arena, Dublin 08 – AO Arena, Manchester  09 – First Direct Arena, Leeds 11 – M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool 13 – Utilita Arena, Birmingham 16 – Utilita Arena, Newcastle 17 – The O2, London

The cancellation comes shortly after Journey keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Jonathan Cain reportedly filed a new lawsuit against bandmate Neal Schon while on tour in the US.

According to Bloomberg Law , the suit was filed on the grounds of frustrations over Schon’s “expenses related to the tour”, including “budgeting and spending” of the band’s credit card over personal expenses.

Upon the UK and Ireland tour being announced in February, lead guitarist Schon said: “It’s been too long since we’ve seen you all!

“We are all very excited to be coming back to the UK and playing with our good friends Cheap Trick, who I’ve known and played with since the ’70s. It’s going to be a great party for all!”

‘Don’t Stop Believin” was named the biggest song of all time earlier this year. More recently, Schon recalled being “terrified” when the hit track was used in Glee – and looked back on it soundtracking the final-ever scene of The Sopranos .

Hurricane Debby timeline: When will it make landfall?

Portrait of Brandon Girod

Hurricane Debby formed Sunday night and made landfall near Taylor and Dixie counties in the eastern Big Bend Monday morning.

Winds from Hurricane Debby reached 80 mph when it hit the Florida coast just miles from where Hurricane Idalia hit almost exactly one year ago.

Florida isn't in the clear yet, however. The Tallahassee area could still see tropical storm-force gusts along with downed trees and power lines as it makes its way northeast toward east Georgia and South Carolina, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

Check out our new timeline: Hurricane Debby timeline: When will it pass through Florida, make second landfall?

A second landfall is expected later this week.

Here is a look at where Hurricane Debby is now and a timeline for the storm's path over the next week.

Where is Hurricane Debby as of 8 a.m. Monday

Hurricane Debby had just reached inland of the Florida Big Bend region at 8 a.m. Monday, in the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

Its current location is about 60 miles north-northwest of Cedar Key, and it's moving north-northeast, or 20 degrees, at about 10 mph.

Debby is expected to continue its gradual decrease in speed as it turns toward the northeast and east later Monday and Tuesday.

On the forecast track, the center will slowly across northern Florida and southern Georgia today and Tuesday, and be near the Georgia coast by Tuesday night. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 75 mph with higher gusts.

Additional weakening is expected as Debby moves over land today and tonight. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 mph. A wind gust to 62 mph was reported at Madison County High School within the last hour.

Where will Hurricane Debby be 2 p.m. Monday

Hurricane Debby is expected to be somewhere near Madison, Florida, by Monday afternoon. At this point, it will start a deeper hook as it transitions from moving north-northeast to east-northeast early Tuesday morning.

Hurricane Debby will likely lose strength as it continues to move across land and be downgraded back to Tropical Storm Debby.

Where will Hurricane Debby be 2 a.m. Tuesday

Early Tuesday morning, Tropical Storm Debby will have made its way across the Florida-Georgia line. At 2 a.m. Tuesday, Debby is expected to be east-northeast of Brunswick, Georgia. From here, the storm will begin a sharp turn east-northeast as it makes its way from Georgia's east coast and back into the Atlantic Ocean.

Where will Hurricane Debby be 2 p.m. Tuesday

Tropical Storm Debby will reach the Atlantic by Tuesday afternoon as it moves north-northeast and begins moving to another hook toward the north Wednesday afternoon.

Where will Hurricane Debby be 2 a.m. Wednesday

Tropical Storm Debby will begin to slow down and begin its hook north.

Where will Hurricane Debby be 2 p.m. Wednesday

Tropical Storm Debby will slow considerably as it hooks north toward South Carolina's east coast, where a second landfall is expected.

Where will Hurricane Debby be 2 a.m. Thursday

Tropical Storm Debby will have made its hook north and begin heading toward South Carolina.

Tropical Storm Ernesto: Track where the storm is heading in the latest models

Portrait of James Powel

Tropical Storm Ernesto formed Monday as it moved toward the Caribbean islands and the forecast suggest Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands could experience tropical storm conditions beginning Tuesday.

You can track the storm's path with the latest maps and models below and follow along with USA TODAY's coverage of Tropical Storm Ernesto as the fifth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season moves through the Caribbean.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and cause flash floods and mudslides but the mainland U.S. could be largely spared from the storm, according to forecasts.

Where is Ernesto heading?

The National Hurricane Center's 11 p.m. ET update Monday indicated that Ernesto could bring tropical storm conditions to parts of the Leeward Islands by early Tuesday, and the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico later in the day.

A tropical storm warning was issued in the area late Monday evening.
