The Complete Guide to Visiting Cozumel on a Cruise

If you’re taking a cruise, there’s a good chance that it will have a stop in Cozumel. The island is among the most popular tourist destinations on the planet. Roughly 4 million cruise passengers visit the island in a year, coming from Miami, Galveston, New Orleans and more. That makes it among the most popular cruise ports anywhere.

Liberty of the Seas in Cozumel

The appeal of Cozumel is obvious. As an island sitting just about 11 miles off of mainland Mexico, it has some of the most beautiful water in the world, numerous resorts, history, shopping, restaurants, and an atmosphere that can only be found in the Caribbean.

Of course, many cruise passengers and other visitors coming to the island aren’t exactly sure what to expect, how to get around, or even the basics like dealing with the language barrier or spending money in Cozumel.

For that reason, we’ve put together this exhaustive guide of everything you need to know about visiting Cozumel on your cruise…

In This Article...

Island Overview

First things first, let’s begin with a quick overview of the Cozumel. As we said, the island sits just 11 miles across the water from the Mexican mainland and the town of Playa del Carmen.

While most people just call everything on the island Cozumel, the main city that you will no doubt visit is called San Miguel. Home to about 80,000 people, San Miguel is a bustling medium-sized town, and gets especially busy when cruise ships are docked (which swells the population of the island).

Satellite view of Cozumel

In town you’ll find everything you’d expect from a city of its size, including supermarkets, restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining, baseball stadiums, and even a planetarium.

While San Miguel and Cozumel might have been a sleepy tourist spot decades ago, that’s no longer the case. It offers an amazing assortment of things to do for tourists, including everything from visits to Mayan ruins to snorkeling to diving, to shopping and much more.

Of course, so much of visiting Cozumel revolves around the beach and water. Unfortunately, the beaches right near San Miguel (and the cruise ports) aren’t the best. While some small beaches exist in this area , the larger and nicer ones are on the southwest side of the island and on the eastern shore.

With millions of American tourists each year, there is a definite American influence on the island. You’ll notice a number of restaurants that are common in the U.S. English is widely spoken by just about anyone on the tourism industry. Meanwhile, U.S. dollars are also widely accepted, as are credit cards (but it’s helpful to carry cash).

Cruise Piers

When it comes to hosting cruise ships, it’s hard to beat Cozumel. With three different cruise piers, the port can host lots ships at once. That can mean tens of thousands of cruise passengers in town on the same day.

Cruise Piers in Cozumel

Puerta Maya Pier The most southern pier, Puerta Maya, has the capacity for four cruise ships at once. It’s often visited by Carnival cruise ships. Walking from the ship to the port area can be a lengthy walk — especially in the heat and humidity. As you reach the shore, you’ll enter the port area. Essentially a small city is built here to cater to cruise passengers before they head out to the city and before they return back to the ship.

cozumel cruise boat schedule

In the port area you’ll find a number of restaurants such as Fat Tuesday, Three Amigos, and Pancho’s Backyard . There are also a number of souvenir shops, duty-free shopping, and even small stores where you can pick up just about anything you might have forgotten at home. There is also a small beach area (without water access) where you can lounge with a perfect view of the cruise ships.

The Puerta Maya Pier is about 2.5 miles to San Miguel.

International Pier Right next to the Puerta Maya Pier, but just to the north, is the International Pier. It often serves Royal Caribbean ships, including their large Oasis-class ships. Just like its sister pier, the International Pier also has a small “city” that caters to cruise passengers (but you can’t go between the two ports).

International Pier in Cozumel

There are souvenir shops, restaurants, shows, and more, including a pharmacy in case you forgot something at home. There’s even a Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville right at the port. Be sure to check out the large Cozumel sign (pictured at the top of this article) for a great photo opportunity with the ships in the background. It’s free and makes a memorable souvenir for your trip.

Just behind that sign is a spot to access the water if you want to swim with the cruise ships in the background.

Punta Langosta The third cruise port in Cozumel is a few miles north of the other two. Punta Langosta sits right in downtown San Miguel and is often used by Disney, MSC, and Norwegian Cruise Line. This dock is highly convenient if you plan to spend some time in the city. Instead of having to get a taxi back and forth from the port, restaurants, bars, and shops are all within walking distance.

Getting Around

If you want to get around Cozumel, then you’re likely going to take a taxi. Cabs are at each port as you exit and cruise up and down all the tourist hotspots. If you’re anywhere that tourists go, you’ll be able to hail a cab whenever the ships are in port.

One nice thing about catching a taxi in Cozumel is that prices are set and displayed prominently at the cruise port . The prices are listed in U.S. dollars, and you can pay without having to exchange money. Be sure to bring correct change, plus a few bucks extra for a tip. Prices are based on the number of people taking a ride.

We suggest that you take a photo of the price chart yourself so that you have it with you should there be any discrepancy. Rates are in U.S. dollars.

cozumel cruise boat schedule

If it’s nice that there’s a set rate for the taxi so you don’t have to worry about price, the bad part is that the rates are high. Most popular spots can be 10-15 minutes from the cruise piers yet the rides can be pricey in our opinion.

Want to save money? We’ve seen some cruises that partner with shopping centers downtown to offer free rides to their shops from the cruise pier . If you plan to head to town, it’s an easy way to save some cash. Look for a flyer in your stateroom on the day before you port in Cozumel to see if this deal is offered on your cruise.

Things To Do on Cozumel

cozumel cruise boat schedule

Cozumel is a playground for those looking to get outdoors at the beach or in the water. But it also has a number of things to do for those who want to experience history, culture, or just relax and be pampered.

For a full list of things to do in Cozumel for your cruise, we’ve covered more than 60 ideas here, ranging from adventure sports to cool indoor activities . Below we have a few of the more popular things for cruise passengers to do, but it’s really just the tip of the iceberg for things to do.

Mr. Sanchos Want to spend a day at the beach without having to worry about a thing? Then you might be interested in Mr. Sanchos . It’s an all-inclusive day resort for cruise passengers. Hang out on a beautiful beach under a palapa, or near one of the two pools. Eat and drink to your heart’s content, or just swing in a hammock.

When it’s time to head back, there are showers available to wash off the salt and sand. There is also an aquatic park for the kids (costs extra), as well as paragliding, horseback riding, ATV or jet ski rentals. Prices start at around $68 for adults.

Chankanaab Pronounced Shon-ka-nob, this park is just a short ride from the cruise ships . In fact, you can see them up the coast. At the park there are tons of things to do, including a wide beach with palapas, snorkeling, sea lion shows, botanical gardens with a walking tour, kayaking, tequila tastings, restaurants, ziplining, and even a chance to swim with dolphins. It costs around $25 per person, and that includes a number of free things to do.(Adventures like ziplining and swimming with dolphins are extra.)

Hotels With Day Passes Want to just enjoy the amenities of resorts on Cozumel — such as a private pool, a beach only to hotel guests, showers, meals, and drinks? A number of hotels and resorts on the island (including some right near the cruise ship) offer day passes. Pay a daily fee and you can relax all day. It’s a great deal if you simply want to have a leisurely day at the pool or beach without having to fight large crowds. See our article on Cozumel hotels with day passes here .

Where to Eat

cozumel cruise boat schedule

While you may not realize it, Cozumel has a wide variety of great places to eat. You have hundreds of choices around the island. Here are some of the places that seem to be most popular with cruise passengers.

All-Inclusive/Excursions If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort with a day pass or you are on an extended excursion, then you are likely going to eat lunch there.

We’ve found that many of these all-inclusive spots offer up some great food that’s also a nice break from the fare on the cruise ship. Tex-Mex specialties are common, so come ready to eat your fill of tacos, nachos, burritos, and more.

If you’re not an adventurous eater, don’t worry; much of it is similar to what you’d find in the United States as many flavors have been adapted to please American tastes. One plus is that the food always seems fresher than what’s on the ship or back home. As well, alcohol and beer seem to be free-flowing. For lunch you aren’t likely to see fine dining, but a fun “beachy” lunch is always tasty.

Port Restaurants We mentioned above that the International and Puerta Maya piers have enclosed areas that cater to cruise passengers. Even Punta Langosta in downtown San Miguel funnels you to a similar area. These spots all have restaurants catering to cruise passengers that want to have a good time.

Across the three you have a number of options, most of which fit into the party atmosphere. They usually serve bar food and Tex-Mex staples, have lots of tropical, fruity drinks, and the music is often pumping. For instance, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, Fat Tuesday, and Senor Frog’s all have locations within the port areas.

For a quieter time, try Pancho’s Backyard if you are at Puerta Maya. It offers great Mexican food, along with gorgeous views of the cruise ships in port. They also have free wi-fi if you need to connect to check on things back home.

Local Spots If you head out of the port or you aren’t fed on an excursion, there are a number of local spots where you can pop in an grab a bite to eat. Many of these restaurants near the port are waterfront, so you can sit, relax, and have a drink and meal with a fantastic view.

For finding the right spot, we recommend just checking out the menus as you pass. Most restaurants have menus posted outside where you can see if it fits what you want to eat and your budget. But if you’re anywhere near the ports or water, you’ll find all sorts of options.

Top Tips for Visiting Cozumel on a Cruise

Having a call to port in Cozumel is a great time. Here are a few tips on what to expect during your stay…

Bring Cash (With Small Bills) Whether its taking a taxi, or simply providing a few bucks propina (that’s tip in Spanish), it’s a must to pack some cash and small bills when you head to port . Small souvenir stands or other merchants may not be equipped to take credit cards, or you might not feel comfortable swiping your card in an unfamiliar place. Bring plenty of cash to ensure you can cover any expenses that might come up.

Take a Photo of the Taxi Rates At the taxi stand outside the ports, there are large signs with posted rates. Cozumel uses flat rates from the piers to points of interest around the island. Grab a quick picture of the sign before you head to get a cab. This way there is no dispute in the price of the cab ride.

Bottled Water Is Everywhere If you’re worried about drinking the water in Mexico, don’t be. Restaurants and other spots all serve bottled water, and its widely available in stores. You don’t have to ask specifically for bottled water, it’s assumed that’s what you want. As well, ice is made from purified water.

Beach Access Is Limited Near the Cruise Piers Want to just head to the beach on your day in port? Unfortunately, the shore around the cruise piers is rocky and jagged. The “postcard” beaches are further down the island and on the eastern shore. As well, beach access isn’t that great here either. Hotels and development block off each access to get to the water. There are a couple of beaches nearby , but you’re usually best off just going to an all-inclusive where there are open beaches and facilities.

The Two Ports Are  Separate If you arrive at the International Pier or Puerta Maya Pier, you’ll see that they are right next to each other. Even so, they are separated and only available to passengers on ships in that port. To be honest, they offer similar amenities so if you visit one, you’ll get much of the same experience as visiting the other.

Wi-Fi is Available in Some Spots The Internet on the ship can be pricey. One good thing about being in port is that some spots have free wi-fi that you can use to connect. For example, Pancho’s Backyard at Puerta Maya features free service so you can catch up back home while enjoying a margarita. So you can skip the ship’s Internet and check in from the island. As well, many U.S. phone plans now offer service in Mexico.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cozumel Safe to Visit? Safety in Mexico is always a big concern. News headlines spark a lot of fear in people not familiar with the area. To be honest, Mexico is seeing higher violent crime rates even in places that used to be untouched by the violence like Cancun.

That said, we’ve seen little to suggest these sort of problems exist in Cozumel — especially during busy time like when ships are in port. Most violence seems to stay on the mainland and away from the popular tourist areas.

One concern is that a ferry boat that travels between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen had an explosion thought to be a bomb and another ferry with a device attached to it. That was some time ago (2018), and nothing further has occurred regarding the ferry boats.

Yes, Mexico definitely has problems, but for the most part those violent stories you hear don’t occur in Cozumel. Any harm to cruise ship passengers on the island is very rare.

What About Bringing Alcohol Back from Port? Mexico is known for its tequila and there are all sorts of stores that sell bottles to tourists. Want to bring it back on the ship? Know that you won’t be able to enjoy it in your cabin. When you get back on the ship, the alcohol will be checked and held in the ship’s storage. It will be returned to you the last night of your cruise before debarking. So feel free to pick up a bottle or two to enjoy back home, but any margaritas you drink will be from the ship’s bar.

Do I Need Pesos? What About Knowing Spanish? As we said at the start, 4 million cruise passengers visit Cozumel each year. The majority of those folks are Americans. To cater to these tourists, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. You should be aware of the exchange rate to know if you’re getting a good deal (currently about 17 pesos to one dollar), but your dollars will be taken just about everywhere.

As for Spanish, it’s always nice to know a little bit, but again there’s no need to worry. English is widely spoken anywhere there are tourists, including restaurants, shops, and taxis.

None that I am familiar wit.

If we catch taxi from one of the ports to certain destinations, I wonder how it works for the returning trip. Is it easy to catch one and how does the rate work?

You’ll want to confirm the rate before you head back (I suggest taking a photo of the fares before leaving). It’s VERY easy to catch a cab. They are everywhere.

Cozumel is proof that Mexico can do ‘island flavor’ with the best of the Caribbean. It may not be the biggest island in the sea, but Cozumel offers a huge variety of things to do, see, taste and explore. This island just happens to be perched atop a coral reef, which promises hours of snorkeling or scuba diving fun. Cruises to Cozumel dock at the island’s heart — just minutes from San Miguel’s seafront shops and the white sand beach at Chankanaab National Park. Drift among star corals and sea fans on a Cozumel diving excursion or simply kick back on the beach beneath your own palm palapa as the turquoise waves roll in. With non-stop zip line action, ancient discoveries at the nearby Mayan ruins, or time spent with your toes in the sand, a cruise to Cozumel may just top your best vacations list… before you even get home.

  • Cruise to Cozumel for a scuba diving adventure along the Great Mesoamerican Reef.
  • Enjoy a leisurely day of snorkeling with iridescent fish at Chankanaab National Park.

Buying tickets for the Cozumel ferry

Now there are two ferry companies that make the crossing between Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel. All boats are similar. Both of the ferry companies have kiosk near the ferry pier.

Most people just show up and take whatever boat is leaving next. You can buy one way or round-trip tickets. There is a small discount buying round trip and saves you from getting in line again to buy another one. We recommend just getting a one-way ticket and then buy a ticket when you are ready to come back. That way you are not waiting for a ferry that you already bought a return ticket for or trying to catch a certain time ferry.

Cozumel Ferry schedule

How much does the Cozumel ferry cost?

The Cozumel ferry cost about 250 pesos one way or 500 pesos round trip. Basically, both are all about the same price and convenience of what boat is leaving next is going to be the deciding factor.

What are the child prices for the Cozumel ferry?

Children 2 years old up until 12 years old are 200pesos one way or 400 round trip.

One big money saving tip is for locals with proof of ID is get a local ticket price.

How long does the Cozumel ferry take?

The ferry is just over 30 minutes to cross. Boats leave very close to schedule. If there are rougher seas, then the crossing can take a little longer. Make sure you get there at least 10 minutes before they leave so you can walk out and get on.

Is there a car ferry to and from Cozumel?

Yes. It is called Trans Caribe but this is totally different than the above-mentioned ferry companies. It leaves from the Calica port which is about 10 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen.

There is however no need to take your car over for the day. It is much easier to rent a car while on Cozumel. The price of shipping a car over out ways any benefit to renting a car.

What is the Cozumel ferry schedule for the car ferry?

The ferry crosses 4 times a day except Sundays when it just crosses twice. For exact hours check the link above to Trans Caribe.

If you are looking to get from the Cancun Airport to Cozumel , see our article here.

You can buy your tickets in advance. This allows you to arrive at the ferry and only line up. Each ferry is a slightly different size but we have never seen people turned away due to it being full. The schedules of the three ferry companies handle the need of the passengers. The only way we have seen people miss a ferry is if they are late.

Question…. What happens if you miss the last ferry? Are there any private alternatives?

Hello Kevin

There are no other options. The only crossings are the ferry. There is a car ferry just south of Playa that has a different schedule but probably not a ride late at night.

Do the ferry companies take credit card?

Hello Rich You can pay for the ferry with credit card.

So nice to have all the info in one place. Thank you!

Hi, do you know if they charge for taking bcycles on the board? Thank you for your help.

None of the three companies have detailed information on their websites. We believe there is not charge and it is considered personal property to carry on. You can choose to contact which ferry company you wish to cross with the confirm that with.

so the last ferry from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel is 11 pm so then arriving in Cozumel around 11:30ish pm time correct?

If it is one of the faster ferries but you should calculate arriving a little later. Since it is one of the last ferries to Cozumel for the day, it might wait for people boarding. So sometime between 11:30 and 11:46pm is more like it.

Hi, I am thinking about taking my rental car to Cozumel with me. How early should I arrive at the terminal before departure time? I understand that the duration of trip of car ferry is 1.5hr, could you please let me know what would be the total time if I take the car ferry (wait time before boarding + travel time + wait time of getting off the ferry) Thank you so much!

It will take about 2 1/2 hours total and you should be there 30 minutes before or more. Most people do not take a rental car just to drive around on the island. Most people rent for the day. It only make sense if you are going for a week. The island is small and only has a small loop where you can drive besides the town and a few side roads.

Great page and so helpful .thanks

Nice site. What about parking near the pier? Cost for the day?

Hello We have a parking guide to Playa here. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/parking-in-playa-del-carmen/ We have a map and general prices. There is one or two lots close to the ferry. We hope you have a good time there.

Is it possible to catch a ferry after hours I have to be at the Cancun Airport by 5 a.m. in the morning and I am staying in conzumel is there any transportation from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen that early in the morning

No there is no way to get to the airport at that hour. The only solution is staying on the mainland your last night or changing your flight to later in the day.

Is there transportation once you take the ferry from Cozumel to playa del carmen to get to Xcaret Park?

There is only a taxi to go to Xcaret from the ferry pier.

Are there any charges for bringing luggage onto the ferries? We are staying in Cozumel and will have our luggage with us.

No there are no changes in luggage requirements. The ferry companies are used to people traveling with luggage. So it will be a pretty standard trip.

Which pier does the ferry dock at in Cozumel? -Punta Langosta Pier Blvd Rafael E Melgar OR – San Miguel Pier Blvd Rafael E Melgar

The Cozumel Ferry goes into the town of San Miguel. This is the northern most pier in Cozumel.

If I pay for a car, do I have to pay for the tickets for every person additionaly? Or does the car ticket includes the tickets for people?

What are you exactly asking? This is not about the ferry correct? If it is about airport transportation to the Cozumel Ferry the price is for the whole can and not per person.

There’s an excursion I’m looking at doing. I’m stopping via cruise ship. I think the excursion is 9-1 or something like that. I’m docking at Cozumel on my cruise. Can I take the ferry over and do this excursion and take the ferry back or is this something you would not recommend?

Hello April

The cruises time everything with the arrival and departure of your boat. So all excursions booked on your cruise will allow you time to get off and back. If you are booking something separate you need to look at how much time you have and figure in transportation time and the some for error or traffic.

I am coming to Cozumel in April on the Freedom of the Sea RC cruise line. I have been there on cruises several times. The RC ship doesn’t offer to many excursions to Playa del Carmen . I know the port in Cozumel is the one that is not in the main part of town So if I took a taxi from there to ferry do you have any idea what that cost? I think I read it takes about 15 min. Then is the beach close by when we get to Carmen DP? Trying to weigh the pros and cons. Will taxi take US dollars? Thank you I will look for your comments.

Hello Dee There will be taxis waiting for you at the ship but these often are at a premium rate. Some are vans and others are a taxi car. So the price varies. It is about $8USD but this will range depending on who you ask. The beach is just north and south of the ferry dock in Playa. It is good to see how the weather is when you arrive. If it is beautiful weather and flad seas it is a good option to cross. If it is windy and the ferry will be bumpy, best not to rock your stomach for your day trip.

Thank you, Can’t wait!

Hi, can you give me an information please, we are a group of 20 pers disembarking from a MSC cruise ( ARMONIA) in november 2018. We have to take the ferry for Playa Del Carmen, can you tell me how far is the pier where the Armonia arrives and the ferry pier to Playa del Carmen ? Do we have to take a taxi because we will have our luggages. Thank you for your reply.

There are three piers where boats arrive in Cozumel. We don’t have a schedule for November yet. You could ask the cruise company to see if they know yet. Two of the docks you need to take a taxi to the ferry. There are car taxis and van taxis. Depending on how much luggage you might need twonor three vans. We don’t have the exact prices for the taxis on Cozumel and it will depend on what pier your arrive.

You might want to update this page since Barcos Caribe is no longer running. Hopefully the other 2 companies haven’t jacked up their prices.

Thank you Ted. We will be working on this.

Hi, we are renting a car going around Mexico and Belize and I would love to stop in Cozumel for a day or two, but as you mentioned price for ferry with a car is not worth it. Is thete some secured parking lot on mainland close to passenger ferry terminal and how much is it to park there for a night or 2? Thank you so much for your reply and all your info:)

Parking is pretty easy near the Cozumel Ferry. We have a guide here with suggestions. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/parking-in-playa-del-carmen/

Note: most rental car companies will not allow you to cross an international boarder. Some will but will require a large deposit.

Thank you for advice. We already booked a car through one company that has possibility for crosing the borders, but for Belize was free and for Guatemala $160 fee. Hopefully there are no other costs and traps in this agreement.

On the fairies can you accommodate handicap bikes scooters and wheelchairs

Yes they can. Since it is the only way to get across except the car ferry, they are used to accommodating people with special needs.

On Google maps it says playa del Carmen ferry dock is PERMANTLY CLOSED? Is this true? I am planning a trip to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen in October but If the ferry is closed I guess I will have no way of seeing Cozumel. your input and knowledge would be much appreciated!

Hello Heather

The Cozumel Ferry Pier is open. We looked at Google maps and did not see anything about it being closed. Maybe you looked at the Constituyentes Pier? That one is only used for ferries from cruises but not for the public.

Could you tell me how to get from the airport in Cozumel to the ferry dock? Flying from Chicago to Cozumel for a vacation in Playa del Carmen. I cant find any information regarding shuttles or taxi’s.

Hello Selena

We have a whole article on that. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/cozumel-airport-to-playa-del-carmen/

I am coming to Playa Del Carmen in January, staying at Rio Lupita, I love your informative videos and all your information, I am thinking of trying scuba diving in Cozumel and wondered if you could recommend a company? I am not a certified diver.

Thank you for watching our videos and reading the website. As for diving information, most dive companies will ask your certifications so they can safely take you on a dive. The currents around Cozumel can be strong and diving in the area is well regulated so people can safely enjoy this activity. If you have done diving before or want to start then here is one local shop that we recommend. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/here-is-a-recommended-dive-shop-in-playa-del-carmen/ All dive shops in Playa will arrange a Cozumel Dive. We don’t know many of the Dive shops on Cozumel so we cannot recommend one but Playa and Cozumel are like one place when it comes to diving.

Are you running on Sunday 23rd Dec?

The ferries will be running that day.

Will the ferries be running a normal schedule on Christmas day?

We are not sure if the ferries will be running 100% normal but there will be a good schedule of crossings so it will not be hard to get one.

I see ferry boats up by a pier near Constitution Avenue. Does a ferry go out of there to Cozumel?

Hello Sue These are only special ferries that service some of the cruise ships arriving in Cozumel. The passenger ferries are still leaving from the Juarez Avenue Pier.

Does the ferry runs on new years day

The ferries do run on New Years Day as well as every day of the year.

Hey. For expats, it is good to know that the fee on the ferry is 200 pesos, show your local drivers license or permanent resident card.

Planning on taking private shuttle and ferry Cozumel. How much time do you think should plan on for trip to make flight on time. Flight leaves at 12pm

Well assuming you are leaving from Cancun Airport and not Cozumel, You need to arrive at the airport at 10am. So that means you need to leave Playa by 9am. If you take a ferry around 8 you can line it all up. If you need to book a transfer, we recommend this company. They will also plan out the time for your pickup from the ferry. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/cancun-private-transfers/

What is the ferry schedule on Sundays from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel? Thanks in advance!

Currently there are limited schedules for the ferries. Here is a link to Ultramar in English for their schedules. https://www.ultramarferry.com/en/routes-and-departures

Hello, my family of 5 are flying into Cozumel and staying for one night. Then we are staying in Tulum for 5 nights, then staying in Cozumel for our last night so we can catch our flight easier.

My question is, should I rent our car on Cozumel or Playa del Carmen for our 7 day trip? Which do you recommend? Thank you so much for your help! 🙂

Hello Bonnie

If you don’t need the car to get around on Cozumel, it is better to get it in Playa for several reasons. If you rent in Cozumel you will need to book the car ferry at an extra cost. Cars are also older and in general worse condition than cars on the main land.

Hello, thanks for the informations. I’ve just booked my ticket online with Winjet, but I’m wondering if I can board the ferry with just my e-ticket as shown on my phone, or is it mandatory to print the ticket as suggested in the reservation e-mail I’ve just received? Thanks in advance and Godspeed! (ps: my trip is tomorrow, and could probably not find a way to print said ticket before then…)

hi do the ferries run on xmas day?

Yes, the Cozumel ferry runs each day. There can be a reduced schedule, but it is necessary for people to commute.

EMBRACE THE BLUES

Your eyes weren't playing tricks as your cruise ship approached the Yucatan: The best Cozumel and Cancun cruises take you to stunning beaches, with perfectly white sand and water so clear and blue you'll think you're on a movie set. While you'll likely stay close to where the masses are in Cancun's Zona Hotelera, Cozumel's beaches are easier to explore, from bustling Dzul Ha to quiet Chen Rio.

DISCOVER THE DEPTHS

One of the best benefits of the clear Caribbean waters off the Yucatan is world-class scuba diving. At Cozumel's Santa Rosa Wall, you can see large schools of grouper fish, while the Cancun Underwater Museum reveals a world of sub-surface art. The water in the Cenote caverns located in the inland part of the peninsula is just as clear— just be prepared for the close quarters of the caves.

ANCIENT ENCOUNTERS

Head south to see the Mayan ruins of Tulum, which sit right on a beach less than a two-hour drive from Cancun. After you finish exploring, sit down for a beachside Corona at one of the bars just outside the historical site. Or drive two hours inland to Chichen Itza: Its step pyramids are one of the greatest architectural achievements of the ancient world. Shop for Mayan-inspired trinkets from one of the friendly local sellers.

Yucatan Peninsula Town Near Cozumel and Cancun

GET YOUR CULTURE FIX

Cancun and Cozumel's town centers remind you that these places aren't just beach hot spots — they're every bit as "real Mexico" as cities in the country's interior. In Cancun, visit food-truck filled Parque Las Palpas, or stop into the shops and cafes of vibrant Avenida Tulum. In Cozumel, check out the understated, elegant San Miguel Cathedral, or learn about the local ecosystem at the Museum of Cozumel Island.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Cozumel Cancun Cruises Insider

Mexico is ready for you to explore at any time of year. In general, the weather is best between December and April — there's little rain, and the temperatures are very comfortable. The wet season starts in May and ends in October, while hurricane season (affecting mostly the Caribbean side) starts in June and runs until November.

When you travel to Mexico, one of the best ways to enjoy the country is by immersion. Try the local food, shop the local markets, and choose excursions that allow you to spend time getting to know a specific neighborhood, historic site or natural wonder.

Brushing up on your Spanish will make your life in the Yucatan a lot easier, even if this region is the most Anglophone-friendly part of Mexico.

For a more local adventure during your stay, have any local hotel (you don't need to be a guest in most cases) order you a taxi to Cancun city.

Enjoy Cozumel's famed scuba diving, even if you're not licensed, thanks to the "SNUBA" experience offered at Chankanaab Park.

CUISINE CHILE OUT

Many of the most popular local Yucatan dishes will be familiar to American palates, particularly if you reside in the southern part of the country. Still, even if you recognize the names of these dishes, you've never tasted versions as delicious as you find in Cancun and Cozumel, where the cuisine is defined by habanero chiles, citrus, smoke and the ever-present achiote paste.

Authentic Cozumel Shrimp Tacos

There are many kinds of ceviche — sushi-grade raw fish marinated in citrus juice — but you can always go the classic route and choose ceviche simple, which pairs simple white fish (usually tilapia) with lime juice, tomatoes, onion and cilantro. Or order one with a more exotic choice of protein — ceviche de pulpo features tender octopus.

Mexican Chile Relleno

CHILE RELLENO

Mexican chefs are experts at taking food to the next level, which is exactly the point of the chile relleno. There are many variants of the dish, though all involve filling a poblano pepper with spiced meat and cheese. One popular variant includes ground pork, raisins and nuts.

Chilaquiles, Traditional Mexican Breakfast

CHILAQUILES

Chilaquiles, which you can essentially think of as a Mexican stir-fry, spotlights red and green Mexican chiles, though they're only one component of this culinary mashup. Many variations ofchilaquiles exist, but you can count on having eggs, tortilla strips, onions, cilantro and cheese in every bite.

A Guide to the Cozumel Cruise Port

I f your Western Caribbean cruise visits Mexico, chances are, you’ll have a stop at the Cozumel cruise port – one of the major cruise ports in Mexico. This popular cruise ship port offers lots of activities and tourist attractions for families, whether you choose to stay in the port area, book an official cruise line excursion, or adventure off on your own unofficial excursion.

Cozumel is an island located off the Yucatan Peninsula in the Quintana Roo state of Mexico. It is officially an island, so you’ll have to take a ferry boat to get to the Mexican mainland.

However, there are many excursions, beautiful beaches, duty-free shops, and beach clubs right there, so you don’t have to leave the island. Cozumel is located across from Playa Del Carmen and Akumal and is in the Caribbean Sea.

We’ve had the opportunity to visit the Cozumel Mexico cruise port three times – once on the Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy , once on Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas , and once on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas.

As an island, it’s quieter than some of the more popular areas in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, like Cancun. It is beautiful though, with plenty of things to do and see, so it’s a great place to visit on your cruise.

My sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas was complimentary. Activities in Cozumel were not included.

About the Cozumel Port Area

There are several cruise ship docks and ports in Cozumel – therefore, it can accommodate quite a few ships. If you are taking a taxi ride, be sure to make note of the port you are at so you can get back. However, many of the taxi drivers will know which ship is at which port for the day.

The amenities at each port will vary, but they all have the basics. You’ll be able to get a taxi at any of them. Unless you do some research in advance, you generally won’t be told which of the cruise terminals you are docking at – just that you are visiting Cozumel.

In some cases, you may need to take a tender boat to the port, but that is uncommon. Most ships visiting Cozumel will dock at one of the three ports.

The Mexican Peso is the currency in Cozumel. However, US dollars are accepted, so you probably won’t need to change money. We recommend bringing cash for tips and cabs.

The Puerta Maya pier generally hosts Carnival ships. It has restaurants, bars, and shops, including the usual cruise port staples like Del Sol and Diamonds International. The Puerta Maya cruise port does have a website with lots of helpful information, as well as a schedule of which cruise ships dock there.

The International Cruise Terminal hosts 40% of the cruise ships that dock in Cozumel. Cruise lines that utilize the International Pier include Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Celebrity. It also has duty-free shopping and restaurants in the Royal Village Shopping Center and is where you’ll find the more popular cruise ship restaurant staples, like Senor Frogs, the Hard Rock Cafe, and Margaritaville.

The third cruise terminal is the Punta Langosta, which is closest to the main city of San Miguel de Cozumel (also the largest city). It also offers a shopping area. Cruise lines that utilize the Punta Langosta pier include the Norwegian, MSC, and Holland America.

On the two times that we’ve been to Cozumel, we’ve docked at the International Terminal. There’s enough to do at the port that you could just stay in that area. If you are planning to take a cab, you’ll want to carefully follow the signs for the cabs. We found that it was a little tricky to locate the exit and the taxi stand – they like you to stay in the port to shop!

Things To Do in Cozumel

Want to do something within Cozumel but beyond the cruise port? There are lots of options. You can choose to book an official shore excursion or do something on your own.

The official shore excursions offered by the cruise line are generally available to book in advance and do sell out. These can be the best for your peace of mind because the tour operator will make sure you are back on the ship in time for departure.

If you are on your own, you’ll have more flexibility but have to be responsible for getting back to the ship in time.

All the cruise lines offer shore excursions, but the options will vary by ship, but some options include ATV rides, the Mayan ruins and archaeological sites, (San Gervasio and El Cedral), dolphin encounters, snorkeling, and a tour of the Mayan Cacao Company . Availability for kids may vary by age.

The Discover Mexico Cultural Park, which we visited during our Disney Cruise Line sailing, has unfortunately been permanently closed. It was one of the main attractions for families, so it’s a big loss.

Another of the more popular tourist destinations is Chankanaab, an adventure park. It offers a beach, animal shows, snuba, swimming with dolphins, a spa, and more. It’s one of the best places to visit in Cozumel.

Beach Clubs In Cozumel

When I visit the Caribbean on a cruise, I usually want to visit a beach. The beaches in the Caribbean are my favorites, and there are some fantastic options. You’ll usually see beach breaks included in the official excursions. They often include transportation and lunch.

For our most recent trip to Cozumel, we decided to book a day pass at a beach club on our own. Two options consistently came up in our searches, Mr. Sancho and Nachi Cocom. Both of these require you to book directly with them, and you’ll need to take local taxis on both ends of your trip. They are about 15-20 minutes from the cruise ports.

Mr. Sanchos is a private beach club offering an all-inclusive experience. Reservations are accepted in advance and are highly recommended. With the all-inclusive pass, you can eat from the buffet, receive unlimited drinks, get the use of beach loungers and umbrellas, and use lockers and restrooms. Other experiences are available for an additional cost, including massages, entrance to the aquatic park, horseback riding, and more.

Guests visiting Mr. Sanchos should bring pool towels from their ship. Otherwise, they are available for an additional rental fee.

Mr. Sanchos is very popular and can get busy when there are many ships in port for the day. It’s recommended that you book in advance.

Nachi Cocom

During our Royal Caribbean cruise this winter, we decided to book a day at Nachi Cocom Beach Club and Water Sports Center. I loved this experience and would visit Nachi Cocom on our next cruise stop in Cozumel.

Nachi Cocom only accepts 130 guests daily. Because of that, it never feels crowded. However, you will want to reserve as early as possible. There are often many cruise ship passengers in port, so things book up quickly. You’ll leave a deposit with your reservation and pay the balance once you arrive (credit cards are accepted).

We exited our ship at our leisure once we docked, and found our way to the cab line outside the port. After a 15-minute taxi ride, we arrived at Nachi Cocom. Like at Mr. Sanchos, you’ll want to bring towels off your cruise ship.

After paying the balance of our day pass, we were guided to a set of chairs and an umbrella. It was beachfront, with easy access to the water, the restrooms, and a bar. Right away, our drink order was taken, and we settled in to enjoy the beach.

Water sports, including banana boat rides and glass-bottom boats, as well as massages, are offered for an additional fee. The all-inclusive fee includes drinks, beach access, free WiFi, a pool, a hot tub, restrooms, outdoor showers, and more.

Around lunchtime, we received menus listing all of the meal options. We were able to choose four courses from the menu, which offers Mexican and American specialties. While I opted for seafood, including ceviche and grilled fish, my kids were happy to have more familiar American options.

We enjoyed our day at Nachi Cocom. It’s an absolutely beautiful beach, and the capacity restrictions made it peaceful and quiet. The drinks and service were also fantastic. While the beach is gorgeous, we also enjoyed spending some time at the pool, which was very quiet that day.

The water sports staff do come by to show you options. If you want to book something, you can do it at that time.

When we were ready to leave, our server ordered us a cab. It arrived after a short time, with plenty of time for us to get back to the ship. I’d recommend planning this process a little early, just to make sure you make it.

Our swimsuits were dry once we were ready to leave. But if you’d prefer to change out of your bathing suits, you should bring along a change of clothes in your beach bag. You’ll also want to bring cash to pay for the cab (both ways) and to tip the staff at Nachi Cocom. We used US dollars for both.

You’ll be dropped off in the same area where you picked up your cab. If you leave enough time, you can do some shopping in the port or can go right back to the ship.

Cozumel is a beautiful, bustling port of call, with plenty of activity options. Did we miss your favorite? Leave us a message and we’ll include it!

Cancun cruise port

Port Cancun cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Cancun, Quintana Roo Mexico, Riviera Maya. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Cancun is a Caribbean port city located on the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico's Quintana Roo state) with population around 0,9 million. Cancun (1970-founded and specifically designed to foster resort-style tourism) is today one of the country's top-visited tourist destinations.

Puerto Juarez Cancun (port locode MXCUN) is the principal seaport (cruise and ferry) and the gateway to Isla Mujeres (Women Island) which is approx 13 km / 8 mi to the east of Cancun City. Regularly scheduled ferries connect Mujeres Island with Cancun's Puerto Juarez Dock and Gran Puerto Pier. The ferry service is provided by two passenger shipping companies (UltraMar Ferries and Jetway Fast Ferry), with UltraMar also providing daily connections between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen . Cancun is approx 100 km / 60 mi from Cozumel (~2,5 hours drive distance).

As cruise port, Cancun is visited by smaller-sized ships and superyachts as Puerto Juarez Dock can handle only vessels with low draft. In 2021 (November through December), the USA company AQV-American Queen Voyages scheduled for its cruise ship Ocean Navigator (fka Victory 2) a new 11-day itinerary themed "Yucatan's Mayan Cruise Tour". Leaving roundtrip from Cancun (homeport), the voyage includes an optional flight to Cancun (overnight hotel stay), bus travel/excursion to Tulum and embarkation in Cozumel (Day 2), Costa Maya (Day 3), Gulf of Mexico cruising (Day 4), Progreso (Day 5), Campeche (Days 6-7 / overnight), Gulf of Mexico cruising (Day 8), Progreso/Valladolid (Day 9), Valladolid/Cancun (Days 10-11 / overnight hotel stay). The cruisetour's prices started from USD 3300 pp (with double occupancy). AQV's land excursions are led by bilingual tour guides and on premium motorcoaches transporting tourists to Chichen Itza.

In 2023 (February 3rd first departure), AQV's Ocean Navigator introduced the 9-day "Immersive Yucatan Exploration Cruise Tour" (from Cozumel to Cancun). The voyage included an overnight hotel in Cozumel (included ferry travel to Playa del Carmen and bus travel to Tulum Archaeological Site and back to Cozumel), departure from Cozumel (Day 2), an overnight port stay in Campeche (Days 4-5), an overnight port stay in Progreso (Days 6-7, including bus travel to Merida and back to Progreso), bus travel/tours to Valladolid and Chichen Itza (Days 8-9), and the cruisetour ended in Cancun. Prices started from USD 3800 pp (with double occupancy).

Cancun has two small-sized Mayan ruins/archeological sites - El Rey (in the Hotel Zone), and El Meco (outside the city). Guided bus tours (traveling to the south along the coastline) visit the Mayan sites Coba, Muyil, Kohunlich, Xcaret, Kohunlich, Kinichna, Dzibanche, Oxtankah, Tulum, Chacchoben. Chichen Itza (in Mexico's Yucatan state) is approx 200 km / 120 mi to the west and accessed via Highway 180. Approx 35 km / 20 mi to the south of Cancun is Puerto Morelos popular for its offshore dive sites and inland freshwater pits/sinkholes, the best-known of which are in Cenote Las Mojarras (diameter 65 m/213 ft, depth 14 m/46 ft) and Cenote Verde Lucero.

Tulum Avenue is the city's main street (running north-south) and also links downtown with Cancun Airport (approx 19 km / 12 mi to the south). The other large streets are Coba and Kukulcan which link to Isla Cancun (Hotel Zone). Paseo Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue connects Cancun (via Carretera Federal 180/Highway 180) to Merida (Puerto Progreso) and runs through Chichen Itza. The main ferryboats to Isla Mujeres dock at Puerto Juarez (on Paseo Jose Lopez Portillo).

By annual traffic, Cancun International Airport is currently ranked Mexico's 2nd-largest (after Mexico City Airport) and Latin America's 3rd-largest (after Mexico City and Sao Paulo's Guarulhos Airport). Cancun Airport has four passenger terminals (total 62 gates) of which the newest (2017-opened) Terminal 4 has annual passenger capacity ~9 million. Numerous airlines interconnect Cancun with popular (domestic and international) destinations, with the busiest routes being Mexico's Mexico City, Monterrey (Nuevo Leon), Guadalajara (Jalisco), Leon (Guanajuato), Veracruz, and Puebla, also Panama City , and the USA's states Texas (Dallas, Houston ), Illinois ( Chicago ), Colorado (Denver), Georgia (Atlanta), Florida ( Miami , Fort Lauderdale , Orlando), New York ( NYC ), California ( Los Angeles , San Francisco ), New Jersey (Newark), North Carolina (Charlotte), Pennsylvania ( Philadelphia ), Michigan ( Detroit ), Maryland ( Baltimore ), Arizona (Phoenix), Minnesota ( Minneapolis ), Utah (Salt Lake City), Missouri ( St Louis ).

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 3 routes I'd sail again in a heartbeat and 3 I'd probably skip.

I've been on 50 cruises (at least six a year), and some routes are better than others.

I try to avoid cruises that make stops at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.

My favorite cruise I've ever been on was a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona.

I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, and I'm always looking to try out new routes with different port stops .

Before I ever book a cruise — which I do about six times a year — I try to find either a new-to-me ship or a new-to-me route. If neither of those options works for my budget or timeframe, I opt for a familiar favorite.

Here are my favorite cruise routes that I'm always happy to book, and the ones I don't need to sail again.

My favorite route is a Mediterranean cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona, Spain.

Mediterranean cruises start and end in various ports of call around Europe, typically throughout the summer sailing season.

Last year, my family and I took a Disney Cruise that started and ended in Barcelona, with stops in France and Italy.

My favorite part of this trip was splitting a day between Nice and Eze in the French Riviera . I was able to walk through cobblestone streets overlooking the ocean while sipping on limoncello.

I love Caribbean cruises along the western ports.

I've taken many western Caribbean routes over the years on Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, and they never disappoint.

The route usually includes stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. But it may also include ports of call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; or Roatán, Honduras.

I always get off the ship in Cozumel, even if it's just to have lunch at a taco shop. Don't get lured into the restaurants right at the docks because the best food is in the spots farther down the main street.

I also love getting off in Roatán. On a recent cruise, I took an excursion to Roatan Island Brewing Company to try different beers made with local ingredients.

I also enjoy routes that only stop at private islands.

Every once in a while, I can find a short three-night cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney that only visits the brand's private islands.

These short cruises are ideal weekend getaways and go to some of my favorite ports of call, like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney's Castaway Cay.

I love both of these destinations because there's so much to do — you really can spend the entire day at the beach or exploring the various parts of the island. I also love that food and drinks are all provided, so I don't have to return to the ship for lunch.

On the other hand, I don't need to go to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas again.

I love short cruises from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but they often mean stopping at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas .

I don't really think there's much to see at either stop once you've done it once or twice. If my route includes them, I usually stay on the ship to enjoy the less crowded pool and spa.

The trade-off for these two ports is often getting to visit a cruise line's private island , so I think it's worth it for that. But I don't need to go on another long cruise through the Bahamas.

I'm also not a big fan of Bimini, Bahamas.

Many cruise lines, like Carnival and Virgin Voyages , are now taking cruisers to Bimini for an easy beach day. But if you're not a big fan of chilling at the beach, there's not much else to do on the island.

I’d probably skip cruising to Key West.

I love Key West in the Florida Keys , but as a port stop, it was hard to see a lot of the island and explore beyond Duval Street.

I'd prefer to spend a few days in the destination to explore all that it has to offer instead of making it a cruise stop.

Norwegian Joy Resumes Service Following Drydock in Europe

  • February 19, 2024

Norwegian Joy

The Norwegian Joy is back in service following a major refurbishment .

After completing the enhancement at Damen, the Norwegian Cruise Line vessel welcomed guests back in Southampton, England on Feb. 13, 2024.

Currently cruising in the North Atlantic, the Joy is offering an 11-night transatlantic to Miami. With no ports of call, the one-way cruise features a total of ten full days at sea.

Once in Florida, the 2017-built vessel is set to kick off a series of week-long cruises to the Western Caribbean.

Extending through early April, the program features a regular itinerary to Mexico, Belize and Honduras that sails to Costa Maya, Cozumel, Harvest Caye and Roátan.

After completing its schedule in the Caribbean, the Norwegian Joy then repositions to New York City for the summer, offering seven-night cruises to Bermuda through late August.

During its refit in Europe, the ship saw the creation of new features and public areas onboard, in addition to a capacity increase .

While part of Joy’s Observation Lounge was replaced by 24 new balcony staterooms, other areas were redesigned.

The ship’s former virtual reality game center, for instance, became a new thermal suite for the Mandara Spa. The space was designed with the guests in mind, Norwegian said, boasting a more centralized layout with sculptures and waterfalls.

The Norwegian Joy also received an expanded Vibe Beach Club, taking over the space previously occupied by a Laser Tag arena.

Citing unprecedent demand, Norwegian expanded the Premier Owner’s Suites onboard the ship, which will now feature three bedrooms.

Part of the vessel’s Haven enclave, the two suites also offer three and a half bathrooms, and a fully renovated living room and master bedroom.

Other new features of the staterooms include a separate dining room overlooking the forward-facing Haven Horizon Lounge, as well as new outdoor balcony furniture.

American Queen Voyages shuts down, cancels future cruises amid reported service issues

cozumel cruise boat schedule

American Queen Voyages has shut down.

An automated voice message on its customer information hotline said the cruise line "has made the difficult decision" to suspend operations, and all future cruises have been scrapped. “Guests and customers should expect to be fully refunded for canceled cruises,” the message said.

The message directed listeners to www.aqvrefunds.com “to begin the refund process,” and said they could find more information at www.aqvinfo.com .

"Despite our best efforts, demand for overnight cruises has not recovered following the pandemic, and AQV has become financially unsustainable," a guest FAQ section on the second website reads. "We thank you for your support and deeply regret any inconvenience this causes you."

No ships were sailing at the time of the closure. Adam Peakes, president of the line's owner Hornblower Group, said it plans to "sell the company, or, if a sale cannot be achieved, its operations will be wound down."

"Please know this decision was not made lightly," he said in an emailed statement shared with USA TODAY. "We are deeply proud of our employees and crew for the outstanding services they have provided our guests over the years. As the backbone of the AQV experience we extend our deepest appreciation to our team for their unwavering commitment, passion and hard work, which has been exceptional. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our guests, partners, agents and the local communities where we call who have each been integral to our journey."

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The news comes after the line reportedly canceled three season-opening sailings set to take place on the Mississippi River later this month, attributing the changes to an extended layup schedule. Multiple industry groups previously suspended sales of American Queen Voyages cruises because of service issues, including delayed commission payments, Travel Weekly reported in January.

The line began sailing as American Queen Steamboat Company in 2011 and was rebranded as American Queen Voyages in 2021 after merging with Victory Cruise Lines.
