10 New Adventure Tours We’re Excited About for 2023

From hiking in norway to learning about indigenous culture in the dakotas, these are the new trips we’ve got our eye on for this year..

Thanks in part to more borders being open versus last year (when many countries, especially in Asia, were still largely still closed off due to the pandemic), 2023 is poised to be a big year for travel. Consequently, myriad companies are offering many new and exciting itineraries throughout the world.

While many travelers may prefer the idea of going it alone when exploring the world, there are countless benefits to traveling with an organized tour group, not least of which is being able to travel with a group of like-minded individuals without having to worry about all the nitty-gritty details. Tour operators typically book and plan all accommodations and excursions and often even include a portion of your meals while traveling. They also offer unique access to places and experiences you might not otherwise be able to easily obtain on your own.

We’ve chosen 10 land-based journeys, all of which will run for the first time in 2023, to consider for your travels this year. Whether you love the idea of experiencing some of the world’s most scenic outdoor landscapes, getting your heart rate up, or taking a deeper dive into local cultures and customs, here are a range of global tours worth flagging. And not only are these tours great for participants, but all those we’ve chosen also are either working to lessen their environmental impact or are developing deeper connections with local and Indigenous communities.

Adventure Life’s Explore Aysen and Patagonia National Park

  • Duration : 7 days

The Aysen region of Chile is one of the most remote areas of South America; on this seven-day expedition, travelers can get a deep dive into Patagonia National Park’s stunning natural scenery. Itinerary highlights include kayaking to the Marble Caves of Lake General Carrera, trekking on the ice of the imposing Exploradores Glacier, rafting the rapids of the Baker River, and hiking deep into protected land to spot wildlife and take in expansive views. Throughout the trip, travelers will stay at the Mallin Colorado Ecolodge , which features superlative views of Lake General Carrera and rustic cabin accommodations. Prices for the trip start at $4,140 per person and include everything except gratuities and flights. There are multiple departures still available through April and again in October through December.

Country Walkers’ Norway: Bergen & the Fjords

  • Duration: 7 days

On this weeklong trip, travelers will hike along Norway’s sublime fjords, over mountaintops, and through idyllic valleys (trekking no more than six miles daily), while visiting castles, gardens, and historic villages. This tour was designed by a founding member of the company’s Sustainable Travel Committee, so it makes sense that sustainability is a priority. When not hiking, the itinerary takes advantage of public transportation (local trains and ferries) to avoid having nonstop van support and uses some excellent locally owned hotels (like Hotel Ullensvang and Fretheim Hotel ) that emphasize ecofriendly practices. Most meals are at local restaurants and farms with an emphasis on hyper-local cuisine. Itineraries start at $5,848 per person, and there are options to add on pre- and post-tour trips to Oslo and Bergen. There are departures available in June, July, August, and September.

Contiki’s Garden Route and Addo Tour

  • Duration: 8 days

This year, Contiki (which specializes in trips for younger travelers ages 18 to 35) has launched an eight-day Garden Route and Addo Tour in South Africa, allowing travelers to participate in one of Africa’s most renowned road trips while spotting diverse wildlife, exploring beaches, and learning what city life in South Africa offers. The itinerary includes a trip to the natural limestone landmark of Cango Caves, a private dinner in the world’s ostrich capital in Oudtshoorn, a safari game drive in Addo Elephant National Park, a township tour in Knysna, and a hike through Tsitsikamma National Park. Travelers will also get the chance to learn about the dynamic Xhosa culture (the second largest ethnic group in South Africa, after the Zulus) and attend the South African Shark Conservancy, followed by a night on the town in the agriculturally rich Stellenbosch with winetasting and food markets. The tour (which starts at $1,356 per person) includes all accommodations, in-country transportation, plus many activities and some meals. There are May, June, July, September, October, November, and December departures.

All of Contiki’s trips are carbon neutral (meaning they offset the carbon emissions for transfers during trips, for accommodations, and for meals), and the brand aims to achieve net zero status by 2050.

Trafalgar’s National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas

  • Duration: 9 days

Trafalgar just launched a North Dakota and South Dakota tour for 2023 that intends to provide travelers with a better understanding of Native American history and culture. The itinerary kicks off in Rapid City with a presentation from a Lakota tribe member who will provide insight into Native American culture through a traditional dance and song performance; next is an excursion through the Badlands National Park with a traditional lunch while learning about the history of the Oglala Lakota Village. Travelers will also spend a day at Mount Rushmore and have lunch at the Rosebud Indian Reservation, home to the Sicangu Lakota Oyate Nation. During a hands-on Be My Guest experience (a program embedded into every Trafalgar tour where guests have the opportunity to connect with locals), visitors will travel to see the Lakota Youth Development center to learn about their mission to reclaim their language, culture, and spirituality during a guided Indigenous plant walk. Tours start at $2,594 per person, with dates between May and September.

REI’s New River Gorge National Park Hiking and Camping

  • Duration: 4 days

For those who want to experience hiking in West Virginia in the 63rd and newest national park but would prefer someone else do the planning and campfire cooking (and guide their outdoor activities), REI Adventures is offering a four-day tour of New River Gorge National Park. It includes trekking to jaw-dropping vistas like Grandview Overlook and the Endless Wall , kayaking and rafting trips in the serpentine New River, and roasting marshmallows for s’mores back at the campsite. (Guests sleep in tents on elevated platforms and have access to hot indoor and outdoor showers.) Trips start at $2,299 per person, with departures between May and September.

Abercrombie & Kent’s Kenya Safari in Style

Abercrombie & Kent’s newest luxury safari adventure begins at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a private reserve in Kenya encompassing 90,000 acres of African grasslands where the Big Five (lions, leopards, buffalo, rhinos, and elephants) can be spotted. Guests can take guided bush walks, interact with the dogs of an anti-poacher unit, and go on nighttime game drives. In this wildly biodiverse region, travelers can also see the world’s last northern white rhinos in their heavily protected enclosure. From here, guests will fly to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, where they may see hippos submerged in shallow waterways near crocodiles sunning themselves on the shore. There are also opportunities to visit a local Maasai village for lunch and take a bead-making workshop from tribal members. Departures occur throughout the year, with prices starting at $7,495 per person.

Guests on this adventure travel by foot, e-bike, train, and electric vehicles, sleeping in accommodations that include a rustic mountain bunkhouse inaccessible by any roads and sustainable high-end hotels. Trips happen throughout the year, with prices starting at $2,400 per person.

Exodus Travels’ Vietnam Adventure

  • Duration: 14 days

Exodus Travels recently launched a special collection of Citizen Science departures as part of its work with NatureMetrics, a company that measures biodiversity to help with climate advocacy. One of those is a 14-day trip that explores much of Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and natural wonders like the Mekong Delta. Highlights of the trip include sailing through the limestone rock formations of Ha Long Bay, walking through the historic city of Hoi An (a UNESCO World Heritage site), experiencing the Cu Chi war tunnels, and touring the Old Quarter of Hanoi. The two citizen science departure dates, where guests will help with water sampling tests for biodiversity, are May 7 and September 24, 2023. The itineraries start at $1,999 per person.

Black Tomato’s Sea of Cortez

  • Duration: 11 days

For 2023, upscale tour operator Black Tomato has created an 11-day itinerary geared toward families to the Sea of Cortez, in Mexico, with a focus on educating kids on conservation efforts. (It’s part of the brand’s Field Trip programming, aimed at creating educational experiences for children 12 and up.)

A new trip includes a hands-on experience with the nonprofit Coral Reef Restoration Project, building and cleaning the racks for corals and snorkeling to observe the coral gardens and witness the impact of this work firsthand.

Other highlights: taking a private boat ride to meet up with a local whale shark researcher and a private naturalist guide for a La Paz Private Whale Shark Snorkeling and Espiritu Santo Island (a UNESCO site) experience. There participants will also learn about the sharks’ role in the ecosystem and mating and migratory habits while swimming with the animals in the turquoise waters. After a picnic lunch on a secluded beach, guests will then head to the local sea lion colony, where they can jump in the water to snorkel with the playful creatures. This adventure will also include three nights exploring the Sea of Cortez aboard your own private Turkish-style sailboat, called a gulet (a two-masted wooden sailing vessel). Itineraries are available year-round, with prices starting at $7,320 per person.

Roughly half of Explore Worldwide’s Lebanon itinerary is in Beirut.

Explore Worldwide’s Highlights of Lebanon

With its well-preserved Roman ruins and castles, historic churches and mosques, nonstop nightlife, and mountain ranges ripe for hiking and skiing, Lebanon is an endlessly fascinating place to visit. Some of the highlights of Explore Worldwide’s trip to this Middle East country include visiting the Cedars of God (a 1,000-year-old forest overlooking the Qadisha Valley), visiting coastal cities like Byblos and Batroun, exploring Roman ruins in Beirut, and learning about Lebanon’s wine industry at local vineyards. Departures run from April to December, with prices starting at $1,870 per person.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

50 Adventures to Have in Your Lifetime

Walk on the Great Wall of China, swim with sharks, chase the northern lights…what’s on your travel bucket list? We picked out 50 unforgettable adventures that we plan to have in our lifetime. We hope this list inspires you, as well.

Tim and I spent months, years even, brainstorming this list. We wanted to come up with 50 travel-related adventures that not only sounded exciting to us, but are also doable for many people.

We know what it is like to have limited time to travel. So we wanted to include a good mix of life-changing multi-day adventures with spine-tingling, adrenaline rushes that can be done in a few days or less.

There are hundreds of activities we could have added to this list. It was very difficult narrowing it down to just 50…but here they are. 50 adventures we plan to do in our lifetime…want to join us?

A man trekking at the Zion Narrows in Utah.

  • Hike the Zion Narrows
  • How To Do It

There are several different ways you can hike the Narrows. Most people hike from the bottom-up, an out-and-back journey that takes you several miles upriver through some of the most scenic sections of the canyon.

For the ultimate experience, you can hike from the top-down, a 16-mile adventure that can be done as an epic day hike or an overnight backpacking trip.

A permit is required to hike the Narrows top-down.

A man staring at a mountain while trekking on the Haute Route.

  • Walker's Haute Route
  • Tour du Mont Blanc

The Walker's Haute Route is a high alpine trail from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland. It makes 10 alpine passes over 200 km of hiking. Along the way you hike past Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. It is one of the most challenging multi-day treks in Europe.

We hiked the Walker's Haute Route in the summer of 2022.

Both of these are spectacular treks across the Alps. If you like the idea of lower crowds and more variety in terms of scenery, pick the Haute Route. If you want to hike one of the most popular trekking routes in the world, go with the Tour du Mont Blanc.

For more information on the Haute Route, check out our Guide to the Walker's Haute Route.

A jeep crossing the Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia Salt Flats).

  • Bolivia Salt Flats

The Bolivia Salt Flats, also called Salar de Uyuni, is the world’s largest salt flat. It’s also one of the most surreal landscapes in the world. In March and April, the salt flats are covered with a few inches of standing water, creating an extraordinary, reflective landscape. During the remaining months, you can witness a vast, white landscape as far as the eye can see.

Jellyfish in Palau.

  • Snorkel with Jellyfish in Palau

Float in the emerald water of a lake in Palau, completely surrounded by millions of jellyfish. It sounds crazy, right? Palau’s Jellyfish Lake is home to a population of jellyfish with a sting so mild you barely feel it (so I have read). But wouldn’t that be wild, swimming among these soft, golden jellyfish in the tropical paradise of Palau?

A couple of men kayaking with snow-capped mountains in the background in Svalbard, Norway.

  • About Svalbard

Longyearbyen is where you will spend most of your time. This is the location of the Global Seed Vault, where seeds of every plant are stored just in case some apocalyptic even occurs on our planet. During the winter months, go dog sledding and go on multi-day snowmobile expeditions. During the summer months (it gets up to a balmy 43°F), the snow disappears, so things to do include kayaking, hiking, and seeing the midnight sun. You can even take multi-day cruises around the island, looking for polar bear.

We spent several days in Svalbard in June 2018. It was one of our favorite travel experiences yet. Svalbard is such a unique place, with the midnight sun, barren landscapes, glaciers, reindeer, and polar bears.

A group of young trekkers in front of the Half Dome in Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California

Half Dome is one of Yosemite’s most challenging and most memorable hikes. The best part is the final climb on the Half Dome cables. Not only do you get the thrill of clinging to the side of Half Dome, you also get to enjoy one of the best views of Yosemite from the top of the dome.

Read more: Hiking Half Dome in Yosemite, a Step-By-Step Guide

17-mile hike with 5,500 feet of climbing. This is an extremely strenuous hike. The final 400 feet to the top involves climbing up the smooth granite surface of Half Dome. Avoid this hike if you have a fear of heights. Allow 10 to 14 hours to complete this hike.

Hiking to Kjeragbolten, this giant boulder wedged between two cliffs, is our favorite hike of all time. Why? It’s not just because you get the chance to do something absolutely crazy, stepping out onto the boulder, it’s also because this hike is just downright fun. Do you dare?

  • Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro
  • How to do it

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Getting to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro (5,888 meters, 19,318 feet) is a popular bucket list item for many travelers and adventurers. This climb is popular since little technical experience is required and the experience is amazing. Do you want to stand on top of Mount Kilimanjaro?

Dry and barren landscape at the Tongariro Alpine Crossing with small, acid-green water bodies.

  • Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Labeled as the best single day hike in New Zealand, some people even consider this hike to be the best single day hike in the world. Here is your chance to hike in the shadow of Mt. Doom, walk through an almost lunar landscape, and watch as semi-dormant volcanoes smoke just a short distance from the trail.

Aerial view of the Havasu Falls waterfall in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, United States.

  • Havasu Falls

Havasu Falls is a gorgeous oasis in the desert. The turquoise waters, roaring waterfalls, and orange and red sandstone cliffs are what make Havasu Falls simply fabulous. To get here, it’s a 10-mile hike one way, but your reward, and the whole reason for going on this adventure, is to spend a day, or two (or three!) exploring the waterfalls, swimming, and enjoying this awesome spot in the American southwest.

The first step, and the most challenging step, is being one of the lucky ones to get a permit. Permits become available for the year on February 1, and usually sell out almost immediately. Then reserve your campsite or lodging at Havasu Falls, strap on your backpack, and enjoy the journey.

You can explore the sights along the Nile River by land or by cruise. Taking a cruise is the most popular way to visit the sites in Aswan and Luxor. But for those looking to escape the tour groups and to have more time in the tombs and temples, traveling by land is a great option.

  • Abel Tasman Coast Track: Hike along beaches and forests
  • Kepler Track: Hike along Lake Te Anau and Fiordland NP

The Routeburn Track is often listed as one of the best Great Walks to do in New Zealand. It typically takes 2 to 3 days but can be done in one day if you are very fit and fast. Learn all about it in our Guide to the Routeburn Track.

Angels Landing is the most popular hike in Zion National Park. The final climb of the hike involves scaling a narrow ridge high above the valley floor. With chain-assisted rock scrambling sections, stunning views, and vertigo-inducing heights, this really is a thrilling hike.

There are several different ways to hike from rim to rim. Most people do this in two or more days, breaking up the journey either by camping or staying in a lodge near the Colorado River. Those who are crazy or just like the idea of turning the experience into a test of endurance do the entire 24 mile journey as a day hike.

We hiked rim-to-rim in June 2019 as a day hike. To date, it's the longest, hardest hike we have done but one of our most epic hiking experiences yet. We have not one, but two articles about how to do this hike.

What is blackwater rafting, you ask? It’s a bit of a misnomer, but blackwater rafting is tubing down underground rivers in the semi-darkness. Sometimes, rappelling, rock climbing, and zip-lining are combined into the experience. It’s very unique and there are only a few spots in the world where you can do this.

The 12 Best Places for Adventure Travel Holidays (TOP TRIPS in 2024)

Adventure is good. Adventure says a lot about who we are as people. How we interact with it, the kind of adventure we seek, our reasons for doing it… these things woven together tell a story .

The adventure keeps us alive – without it, we stagnate . We work our 9 to 5 so we can come home afterwards, cook dinner, binge Netflix on the couch with our significant other, and then – if we’re lucky and not too tired – a banal quickie before we hit the sack.

Even writing that paragraph gave me an existential crisis .

So what’s the remedy to all that deep-seated nihilistic fear and loathing? Quite simply, an adventure! Nature, adrenaline, dicking around and almost falling off mountaintops: now you’re really living!

So, you’re considering some good ol’ travel adventures. Well, this is the list for you: the 12 best places for an adventure travel holiday . It’s also quite a good list if I do say so myself; at least one offering from every continent!

The activities vary, the environments vary, the budgets vary but the feeling of truly being alive remains the same among these adventure tourism destinations. These are the bucket list trips of a lifetime!

To, you know… distract you from the gnawing meaninglessness of existence.

The 12 Best Places for an Adventure Travel Holiday

What is adventure tourism, safety and ethics of adventure travel, it’s time to go to the best places for adventure travel holidays.

Alright, we’re jumping right into it… the good stuff! The best places for adventure travel across the seven continents!

After the mega-list we’ll get into some nitty-gritty stuff but today I want to give you your dessert before your broccoli. The 12 best places for adventure travel straight off the bat!

They may not necessarily be the most adventurous countries (depending on your perception of ‘adventurous’) but then some, I’d argue, are pretty far out. That’s what I’m saying: we got something for everyone! It’s like Baskin Robbins if Baskin Robbins only had 12 flavours.

Bah, enough loose metaphors – it’s time for the 12 best places for adventure travel – starting with the best!

#1 Pakistan: The Best Place for Adventure Travel that Makes People Go, “You’re going where!?”

I bet you weren’t expecting this to make the list of the best places for adventure travel holidays!

Yep, let’s talk Pakistan. And before we do, you’re gonna have to leave all your stigmas at the door (along with your shoes, thank you very much)!

Pakistan is one of those places where you’re taking adventure tourism to the next level. It drops a lot of the ‘tourism’ in the process. If your idea of the best adventure holiday is a lot of beautiful nature with a lot of friendly, inquisitive people, it’s worth flying in the face of the status quo and travelling to Pakistan. I mean, that’s the whole point of a travel adventure, right?

You’ll find a lot of trekking in Pakistan with something for everyone. If you’re an avid trekker, the Karakoram range is magnificent and a true feat to experience. There are also more chill day hikes – and then there’s the 18-day trek to the K2 base camp (the second-highest mountain in the world).

You can try going it solo to discover one of the most adventurous countries in the world all by your lonesome. There is certainly some solitude and epic adventure waiting for you!

Even adventure travel is sometimes better shared though!

#2 New Zealand: Adventure Travel With a Bit of Everything!

Time for something a little more standard but no-less downright gorgeous! The good thing about adventure travel in New Zealand is that you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. It’s like seven countries in one neat little package.

Ice-capped mountains? Check. Petrified forests? Check. Prehistoric coastline? Check. Uninhabited fjords? Check.

And that’s just found while road tripping the South Island !

New Zealand’s adventure tourism options have a flavour for everyone!

The Great Walks offer multiple levels of trekking from the well-worn Abel Tasman to the near-undisturbed Stewart Island. Or, you know, you could just walk the entirety of New Zealand – I met a dude that did it without shoes. That’s pretty metal.

Roys Peak Track, New Zealand

But where do you go in New Zealand for the best overall adventure holiday? Easy one, man. You backpack Queenstown : the go-to for adventure travel sports and activities in New Zealand.

You’ve got beautiful weather on the lake in the summer months. Then, come winter, all the snow bums roll in for the powder season. A year-long travel adventure backpacking epicentre!

So what other adventure activities are there? It’s mega-famous for bungy jumping, ziplining, or you can book a skydiving tour. Honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to do it.

Oh, and if you get bored, beautiful, darling Wanaka is about an hour’s drive away… and it’s way better!

#3 Nepal: Holy Mountains and a Booming Adventure Tourism Industry

The past decade has seen near-consistent growth in tourist arrivals to Nepal.

How come? Hmm, I can’t be certain but it may have something to do with the Himalayas… Nepal is the ‘roof of the world’ after all.

So what type of adventure tourism can you expect from Nepal? Well, again, it’s the Himalayan Mountains… so… a lot of mountaineering. Mind you, this is the final-boss-level mountaineering I’m talking about. The proper hardcore deal.

However, Mount Everest is full of garbage and Nepal is struggling to keep up with its tourism. We’ll cover being a responsible tourist later on, but while we’re talking about Nepal, trek something other than Mt Everest.

The Himilayan mountains seen from a tent

You can disappear (safely) into the Annapurna range . This epic trekking loop strikes a nice balance between being both culturally authentic and tourist accessible. But pick your timing right: outside peak season but close to the cusp for the best of both worlds.

Alternatively, just pick a direction and start walking. The further out you get to where the whiteys don’t go, the more spectacular and strange Nepal becomes. The chaos of India slowed down by the pace of mountain life.

I’ve even heard whispers of a pristine ancient lake too; they say… Rara .

And then there is travelling Pokhara . Pokhara, in many ways, is like Queenstown. Only it’s slower, it’s more chill, and you smoke hash instead of greenery.

There’s a lot of adventure tourism activities around Pokhara now (as the industry has grown). You can learn to Paraglide , go trekking, and there’s some dope rafting around too.

#4 Costa Rica: Adventure Travel that’s Pura Vida

Costa Rica – the birthplace of the zipline. So, now you know number one on your list of adventure activities to do in Costa Rica.

Backpacking Costa Rica has got a lot to offer the adventure traveller: jungles, beaches, volcanoes. The nature in Costa Rica is one of the reasons that Costa Rica has remained one of the world’s best places for adventure travel for so long.

Its natural magnetism to travellers and ex-pats alike has made Costa Rica both a fantastic and varied place to travel. It’s also caused its prices to rise and become one of the more expensive choices for adventure holidays you can take while travelling Central America .

The trade-off? It’s the goddamn birthplace of the zipline, remember?

The famous Costa Rica Zipline and the birth of the canopy-surfing adventure tourism

Picture this: you’re cruising along at a cool 70km/hr. Beneath you, the rippling greens of the jungle canopy blur together. At the end of the line, a crew of trained squirrel monkeys await your arrival, a chilled refresco and caramel flan in hand. Ok, I made that last bit up (but I’m a writer , don’t you know).

La Fortuna is your best destination for adventure tourism in Costa Rica. It’s a small town close to the piercing Arenal Volcano (which is an absolutely magnificent creature). In the area, you’ll find hiking, canyoning, rafting, and of course, the jungle zipline!

And, if you’re more of a beach person, head towards Costa Rica’s coast for snorkelling and scuba diving action.

#5 USA: The Adventure Travel MECCA

Heading north from Central America takes us to… North America. Yeah, that makes sense.

What will you find while exploring the USA?

A lot of flag-waving patriots who chase tornadoes and pull their own teeth out on account of the lack of medical insurance. Anyway, other than that, you’ll find SO MUCH epic, adventure travel!

The big, bold, and beautiful US of A is chock full of adventurous places to visit .

Moab is one of the best places for adventure travel in the USA

So, where to travel for adventures in the USA? God, what do you like? Canyons, mountains, coasts, great lakes, rivers, prairies… it’s all there.

  • Moab (Utah) takes the top pick as one of the best places for an adventure vacation in the USA. It is the go-to for mountain biking with courses ranging from the beginner all the way up to the ‘holy shit, I might die’ . You’ll also find heaps of sweet rafting, ATV driving, horseback riding… it’s an adrenaline junkie’s desert playground!
  • Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming) has hiking and hot springs. That’s a no brainer! Anywhere that has hot springs is going to make for a top trip.
  • Colorado: home of the Rocky Mountains! What do you get there? Mate, were you not listening; I just told you – the Rocky Mountains! Hikes, rock climbing, and legal bud; it may just be heaven-on-earth.
  • Yosemite National Park, California : is the impossible-to-not-mention choice. The undisputed king of the USA’s national parks featuring the truly staggering peaks of free-soloing ‘What’s a rope?’ Alex Honnold fame.

10 adventures tours

The USA is  blisteringly beautiful. It’s also blisteringly expensive! Visiting two national parks in day can run you $70+ in entry fees.

Orrrr… you kick those entry fees to the curb, buy an annual ‘America the Beautiful Pass’ for $79.99,  and get unlimited access to ALL 2000+ federally managed sites in the States totally FREE!

You do the math. 😉

#6 Argentina: Adventure Travel at the End of the World

If you head in the other direction from Central America (by which I mean south) you get to travelling South America . That also makes sense.

There are a lot of kick-ass destinations for adventure trips in South America: Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador jump to mind. But Argentina has Patagonia. And I’m all about those harsh, sparsely populated wildernesses.

This idea for adventure travel is not for the faint of heart – you’re heading into challenging terrain. Look at a map of Argentina. You’re nearly at the bottom of the world. But challenging is the whole point, right?

An adventure holiday in argentina

And backpacking Patagonia is only one region of Argentina you need to explore. It’s a big damn country with a lot of cool places to see (the Ibera Wetlands come to mind).

Argentina is so big and so damn gorgeous that it’s picking up steam as one of the best places for adventure travel in a van. Van life is preferred by many scroungy vagabonds – because a van makes perfect sense for an adventure vacation on a budget.

The northernmost point to the southernmost point of the land at the end of the world… now that’s a journey idea!

#7 Canada: Adventure Travel With a Dash of Solitude

Since we’re talking about vast, harsh, sparsely populated wildernesses, we should talk about Canada. You’ve got a lot of chill places and cool cities in Canada ( like Vancouver )… and then you head into the great outdoors and oh wow!

It’s mega pretty .

What kind of extreme adventure vacations can you get up to in Canada? Well… that depends on how extreme you’re willing to go.

For something fun but with a low chance of death, there’s skiing and snowboarding at a resort such as Whistler. Hit the slopes and then get all the perks of a ski-town: loud parties and hordes of drunk Australians. Don’t worry, we’ve got awesome hostel suggestions for budget adventurers too!

Oh, you wanted something with a high chance of death? Sorry, I misheard you. How about ice-climbing UP A FROZEN WATERFALL! How’s that for an extreme adventure vacation? It’s your very own Tom Cruise movie!

Climbing an ice waterfall is an ultimate bucket list idea

Banff is one of your best adventure travel destinations in Canada. You’ll find the aforementioned ice-climbing there (yesssss) plus a bunch of other cool shit: national parks to adventure in , hot springs, and skiing.

North from Banff (and not too far by Canadian standards) is Jasper National Park with more wilderness and hikes. If it’s solitude that you’re seeking in your adventure travels, then travelling the Canadian wilderness has what you need.

Just watch out for bears. Although, they make a spray for that.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

#8 Mongolia: Adventure Travel With The OG Nomads

This is one of the best adventure holidays in Asia as far as I’m concerned. It’s a long-time dream of mine: to ride a horse on the plains of Mongolia. I haven’t done it yet – timing is important – so I’m recommending you to do it.

Why? Well, if you want to truly call yourself a nomad, then you gotta be a damn nomad! You need a horse on the plateaus of Mongolia. You need to search for water for your travelling companion and shoot at horse thieves with your bow.

I met a good dude in New Zealand. He’d never ridden a horse before and he was curious, so he went to Mongolia and made his very own horseback adventure tour. Now that is bad-ass!

10 adventures tours

Seriously though, Mongolia is a country of beautiful yet unforgiving terrain and the Mongolian people have unlocked its secrets, able to live nomadically and tend livestock amongst its deserts, plains, and hills. It’s also smack-bang between Russia and China so wherever you go, you’ll be off the beaten track .

If you’re interested in Mongolian culture, I’d recommend being there in October. Every year in the first week of October is the Golden Eagle Festival where you can see skill contests in archery, wrestling and eagle hunting. Not hunting eagles but hunting with eagles –  they’re the OG nomads, man!

#9 China: The Other Best Place for Adventure Travel that Makes People Say, “You went where!?”

Good ol’ communist China: the antithesis to the American Dream. It’s like going to another planet so, if you can’t get ‘off the beaten track’ there, you’re probably doing something wrong. China is a hit with backpackers in search of adventure!

You’ll almost always be mildly-to-noticeably uncomfortable which makes for some of the most character-building adventure holidays for both single travellers and couples. It’s also a solid destination choice for a cheap adventure holiday. It’s not as cheap as, say, Nepal, but it’s cheaper than most people realise (especially if you’re camping in nature ).

Mount Huashan is the top trips in China's adventure tourism

So, what kind of adventure activities await in China? Well, trekking galore; I’ve heard the Great Wall is kind of long and, yup, you can camp on it! Or you can visit Tiger Leaping Gorge or Mount Huashan which is considered one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the world. Deadly hiking in China – now that’s an extreme adventure vacation!

I mean, hell, just buy a bicycle and see how far you can get across the supreme landscape. It’s China, you’re pretty much guaranteed an adventure no matter where you go!

#10 Zimbabwe: Adventure Travel With a Touch of Sun and Crocodiles

There’s three more entries on our list and three more continents to explore. Let’s make a shift over to Africa now… to Zimbabwe! Africa is one hell of a trip that will always make you laugh!

If we’re talking Zimbabwe adventures, we’re talking Victoria Falls. Oh, the falls? They’re drop-dead breathtakingly ‘life is beautiful’ gorgeous. Absolutely stunning.

Victoria Falls is a hotspot for adventure travel in Africa

Victoria Falls has built itself up as the best adventure holiday destination in Africa. You’ll find a huge scope of adventure activities in Victoria Falls including bungy-jumping, gorge-swinging, flying foxes, rapid rafting (I’m talking those infamous grade V and VI options), and cage diving with crocodiles. Diving with crocs… it’s an adrenaline junkie’s paradise!

It’s also warm – with swimming involved! It’s a nice change of pace from the freezing-cold murderous wildernesses I keep sending you to (just wait for the last two entries on this list, muahahaha)!

And since you’re in Zimbabwe (and how often do you end up over that way, realistically) maybe explore the rest of the country. Victoria Falls is surrounded by gorgeous national parks and there are plenty of adventure safari tours to partake in.

grayl geopress filter bottle

Drink water from ANYWHERE. The Grayl Geopress is the worlds leading filtered water bottle protecting you from all manner of waterborne nasties.

Single-use plastic bottles are a MASSIVE threat to marine life. Be a part of the solution and travel with a filter water bottle. Save money and the environment!

We’ve tested the Geopress  rigorously  from the icy heights of Pakistan to the tropical jungles of Bali, and can confirm: it’s the best water bottle you’ll ever buy!

#11 Scandinavia: Adventure Travel With Freedom to Roaaaaam

Right, let’s talk about adventure holidays you can have while backpacking Europe. Are we talking about the stunning (and warm) Amalfi Coast or the tranquil (and warm) beaches of Portugal? Hah, nope, it’s back to freezing your tits off. Apparently, adventure is best served cold.

I think the reasons to send you to Scandinavia should be relatively obvious: a massive and untamed wilderness of eclectic beauty that will bitchslap you upside the face if you don’t respect it. Just my type. 😉

But, there’s another reason: something called “freedom to roam” . Laws vary by location and discussions on environmental impact is important but it is, I feel, the way adventure travel should be.

Every human has the right to disappear into nature and just be. Just be without electricity, and goddamn Wi-Fi, and the white noise of the world. Time to just spend some time without your phone, and straight-up forest bathing.

Norway Travel Restrictions - On the Ground in the Norway

So if you’re looking for the best places to escape alone, the Scandinavian/Nordic countries have got you covered. If you’re also looking for the best adventure holidays for couples, you should consider Scandinavia because everybody knows that disappearing into the wilderness for weeks at a time is better with someone that lets you touch their butt.

Where are you going? Wherever you damn well please, that’s my point. Take a compass. And if you don’t feel like walking then saddle up a reindeer – and go disappear… safely. Light a campfire (legally) and watch the stars and the lights in the northern sky which no man owns no matter how much they wish they did.

#12 Antarctica: The Final Boss of Your Adventure Travels

I said we were going to all seven continents, right? I also said adventure is best served cold.

Yes, you can do adventure travel in Antarctica. Yes, it is more expensive than anything else on this list and no you can’t go unguided unless you break away from your tour group ( NOT a good idea). This is about the most extreme adventure trip you can take until Elon Musk sorts out that whole space/moon tourism thing. But, let’s be real, do we really want him to?

Antarctica rounds of 7 continents of best places for adventure travel

Most Antarctica tours involve a cruise and will take you to and around parts of the continent – usually, the Antarctic peninsula which is pretty damn close to Argentina (hence the ‘land at the end of the world’ thing). Some of them will also take you to the Falkland Islands which are super damn pretty.

Now, you could always shore up your boat life skills and test the hell out of yourself and your crew by sailing there…

Either way, you can expect a lot of wildlife watching as well as some adventure activities alongside such as kayaking, scuba diving, and paddle-boarding. Notice how all those activities had some relation to the freezing-cold water…

Yep, that’s what to expect from Antarctica: desolation, magnificence, and feeling permanently cold all the time. But hot damn if she’s not gorgeous.

packable travel medical kit

Things go wrong on the road ALL THE TIME. Be prepared for what life throws at you.

Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!

Now I’m giving you your broccoli. You don’t have to eat it; you do you, man.

Depending on where you look, you’ll find several definitions of adventure tourism. Of course, as we all know, stuffy definitions created by stuffy people don’t often encapsulate the whole truth. But we need to talk about the consequences of these stuffy definitions.

In 1953 Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay were the first ever to summit Mount Everest. Now, just over 65 years later (less than the lifespan of a person) over 8000 people have summited the peak.

Now, there’s something to be said about the advantages and disadvantages of adventure tourism but it doesn’t help with our definition for the purpose of this article. Thus, I’ve decided on three criteria to define adventure travel by:

  • There’s some level of an inherent risk involved i.e. injury or death is increased in likelihood by the activity.
  • The activity revolves around interaction and interplay with nature and the outdoors.
  • There is a market, sub-culture, and level of commercial gain behind the activity.

Rock climbing has taken off internationally as an adventure tourism activity

The adventure activity can be guided or unguided; paid for or free; and range anywhere from death is a slim possibility to ‘Dude, who gets your PlayStation when you die?’ .

But, generally speaking, your best places for adventure travel are going to be marketed as primo adventure tourism holiday destinations. With that comes all the perks and caveats of a place well-worn by tourists.

I’d also like to define the difference between adventure travel and a journey . Hitchhiking across China, walking through the Middle-East, or backpacking around South Africa are all great journeys (and some of my ultimate bucket list ideas), but they’re not adventure travel holidays since they’re not primarily driven by the purpose of tourism. That’s a personal journey, mate!

Types of Adventure Tourism: Hard Adventure Activities

Ok, so seriously, if you want to discuss types of adventure travel, there are lots of ways to break it down and a lot of different sub-categories. That’s the point of my criteria above and my separation of a ‘journey’ and ‘adventure travel’ .

One of my favourite types of journeying (which many would rightfully consider adventure travel) is overland travel (i.e. no planes). However, telling you to start in Japan and finish in Italy without using planes wouldn’t make for a very appealing article. It does, however, make for a seriously dope journey!

Suprise bear on hiking trip for a single man

So, the first category of adventure tourism activities that we’re going to talk about are the ‘hard’ type. Generally, the activities defining this category pose a sizeable risk… of death.

When you’re partaking in these adventure travel ideas, generally it’s better to know what you’re doing to avoid that whole ‘dying young’ thing:

  • Mountaineering
  • Ice Climbing
  • Wingsuiting
  • Base Jumping
  • Bear Fighting

For the record, I made that last one up… I hope…

Types of Adventure Tourism: Soft Adventure Activities

These examples of adventure tourism tend to be less hazardous and generally less dangerous than fighting a bear on an ice mountain while wearing a wingsuit. They have lower overall death-related statistics and your mum isn’t going to complain as much when you tell her what you’ve been up to.

Fishing is both a safer and cheap adventure holiday

It’s worthy to note that most of these activities’ risks can be mitigated by having a professional guide or partaking in some sort of adventure holiday tour. Conversely, the risks can be heightened (i.e. made more fun) by pushing the limits of the activity, often upgrading it to a hard adventure activity. Try rafting some grade VI rapids and you’ll see what I mean:

  • Trekking/hiking/orienteering
  • Kayaking/rafting/canoeing
  • Bungee jumping
  • Skiing/snowboard
  • Mountain biking

Obviously, this far from a complete list but it does give you an idea for what you’re in for when visiting some of the best places in the world for adventure travel… that being a whole lotta fun!

Why Visit the Best Places for Adventure Travel?

Well, I feel I sorta already addressed that with the whole ‘combatting the existential abyss inside your soul’ thing but, yeah, there are other reasons too.

It’s about the challenge. Sure, the advent of the adventure tourism industry mitigates the challenge somewhat (see the above example of Mount Everest) but it’s still an adventure – it’s in the name, after all!

And it’s your adventure! Take it as far and as dangerous as you like. You do you.

It’s about growth : growth through hardship. Learning to take things in stride. Learning that things, most of the time, will be ok. You just have to keep moving.

A man getting dirty on an extreme adventure trip

It’s about getting dirty. Because, everybody knows, being covered in dirt, and mud, and scratches, and leeches makes you appreciate a hot shower just a little more.

And, it’s about contentment. It’s about, one day, when you’re eighty years old and nestled in your rocking chair reminiscing on the life you’ve lived, you can say: “Yeah, that was pretty good. I’d say, overall, I did a good job – 7 out of 10… oh, maybe a 7.5.”

You could think of your travels as a way to create a lifetime reel of memories to spin into epic yarns to bother your grandkids with…

But adventure travel is also about connecting to life and our planet, which, in case you hadn’t heard, is pretty bloody gorgeous.

Our GREATEST Travel Secrets…

Pop your email here & get the original Broke Backpacker Bible for FREE.

Right, so that’s your dessert: 12 of the best places for adventure travel across the seven continents of our world. And some damn fine choices too, if I do say so myself!

And you ate your broccoli. Good, I’m proud of you. No, you can’t have a second dessert! But you can have some more broccoli. 😉

So, before you inevitably go and tear it up snowboarding, rafting, or bear fighting, I’d like to touch on a few more things to note. A few practical considerations of the environment, taking care of yourself, and just generally not being a knob-jockey while you’re engaging in your Evel Knievel ways.

Toursim: the Double Edged Sword

This topic is really deserving of (and has many) socio-ecological research papers, but it goes without saying that adventure tourism has an impact. Think about Pokhara in Nepal: what was once considered one of the most mystical places in Nepal is now a bustling city that is known as its ‘tourism capital’.

But, again, think about Pokhara: a city that was once only accessible by foot is now one of the most affluent cities in Nepal. It’s a huge metropolis that garners a large amount of revenue for a developing nation and supplies jobs and a better quality of life for many people. It’s here that you start to wonder: is budget travel ethical?

Pokhara is an example of the effects of adventure tourism in Nepal

Tourism is a double-edged sword and adventure tourism only takes a whetstone to the blade. As per my original definition, it usually entails some form of interaction with the natural environment and, as you may have noticed, it also usually involves some form of interaction with cultures unaccustomed to the West. Which means they are unaccustomed to – let’s say – the ugly side of Western tourism.

So be a good dude; it’s just that simple. Nothing grandiose – just stay aware, be responsible, and be respectful. Be respectful of other cultures and the people there; their sole purpose in life is not to make sure our one-week-itinerary travel adventure trips blows up on the socials.

And be respectful of our environment. It was here long before we were carving it up with snowboards and mountain bikes and it’ll be here long after it’s wiped us all out for carving it up with snowboards and mountain bikes.

Past that, you do you. You know how to be a good human. And if you’re travelling and not being a good human… it’s only a matter of time until someone – local, traveller, or Mama Nature herself – sorts you out.

Travel Insurance for Best Places for Adventure Travel Holidays

Goddamn! All this adventure and far-flung locales and talk of bears – maybe it would be smart to protect yourself with some insurance?

Things do go wrong when you travel, particularly if you’re doing hectic shit in the most hectic corners of the planet.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

That’s it. The whole list. If you do one of these ultimate bucket list ideas , well done. If you do all 12… geez, dude, legend; you’re a braver human than me.

So, what are my final thoughts on the 12 best adventure holidays in the world? Honestly, I think I’ve touched on all of it already.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re after a cheap adventure holiday, an extreme vacation, or a journey away from where all tours can take you. Just remember, that it’s the adventure that connects us to travel and to life.

Just remember that adventure is awesome. And that it keeps us alive. And that it is these stories that you’ll be telling your grandkids one day. So make them grand and beautiful and dangerous and filled with plot twists.

Tell a good story.

10 Adventure Cruises to Stunning Destinations Around the World

Visit Antarctica, the Galápagos, and more on these adventure cruises.

10 adventures tours

A cruise can be a thoroughly peaceful escape with days spent relaxing on deck, sipping cocktails at happy hour, and watching the waves roll by. Or a cruise can be an active adventure with exploration of natural environments, wildlife encounters, and an itinerary that changes based on weather conditions. With travelers these days seeking new experiences, cultural immersion, and remote untouched destinations, adventure cruises and expeditions are trending. That's not to say that these cruisers are totally roughing it. Many return to butler service, five-course dinners, hot tubs, and spacious suites after a day of kayaking, hiking, or snorkeling.

Adventure cruises can satisfy a traveler's curiosity, commitment to ecotourism, or desire for an active vacation. Well-equipped expedition ships might take them to Antarctica, to the Galápagos , or to inaccessible islands in the Arctic Circle. Along the way, they may climb into kayaks or Zodiacs, hike through dense forests, or snorkel among tropical fish or coral reefs. Onboard educational programs enhance the experience on most adventure cruises.

The options are many, with expedition itineraries and adventure-based activities even showing up in the brochures of traditional luxury cruise companies. Here are 13 adventure cruises for both newbies and experienced adventurers.

Adventures by Disney - Antarctica and Patagonia Expedition Cruise

This 12-day excursion begins in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and continues with a flight to Ushuaia and a chance to explore Tierra del Fuego or ride on the End of the World train through Patagonia. There, guests board the ship for the 10-day cruise to Antarctica. Along the way, optional activities include a Zodiac cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula, a walk among penguins, a kayak experience, and a hike for stunning hilltop views of Antarctica. The two-day crossing of the Drake Passage is a highlight. Onboard, activities include wildlife viewing, naturalist presentations, photography tips, ship tours, games, movies, and a heated pool.

Adventures by Disney - Galápagos Islands Expedition Cruise

This 9-day excursion begins in Quito, Ecuador and continues with a flight to Baltra where guests board a panga boat that takes them to their ship, Galápagos Legend . A hike and snorkel on Bartolome Island begin the adventure, and the ship sails to South Plaza Island for a naturalist-guided morning wildlife walk among sea lions, iguanas, and blue-footed boobies. On Cristóbal Island, guests can hike, take a glass-bottom kayak cruise, and snorkel. Visit the oldest of the Galápagos Islands, Española, where green sea turtles, sea lions, and mockingbirds live. Onboard, guests enjoy stargazing on the equator, Disney movies, and al fresco dining.

Lindblad and National Geographic - Wild Peru Escape: Amazon and Machu Picchu

Starting in Lima, Peru, guests on this adventure head to Cusco for a drive to an Andean village and a train to Machu Picchu. Travelers spend a day exploring Machu Picchu, with hikes to the Sun Gate or Huayna Picchu. A train ride, flight to Lima, and a drive to the riverside village of Nauta takes guests to the Delfin II for the cruise of the Upper Amazon. For the next five days, they explore the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, with more than five million acres of pristine jungle. Daily excursions by skiff or kayak and hikes (when water levels permit) pass sloths, monkeys, birds, and more. Guests have a rare opportunity to meet the ribereños, the people who live on the river.

Hurtigruten - Circumnavigating Svalbard: The Ultimate Expedition

The Svalbard Archipelago, located in the Arctic north of mainland Europe, represents one of the world's largest untouched wilderness areas. The 12-day expedition begins with a flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen. There's time to explore the frontier town before boarding ship to cruise among huge glaciers, icebergs, and wildlife. In eastern Svalbard, the largest population of polar bears in the archipelago can often be seen hunting seals with their cubs. Drifting ice and the frozen seascape determine the specific route, and the captain and expedition team decide where to sail and land. Onboard amenities include hot tubs, sauna, gym, lectures from the team, and a professional photographer's advice for capturing the best landscape and wildlife photos.

UnCruise Adventures - Columbia River Cruise: Rivers of Adventure and Wine

From Portland, the ship heads to Astoria with its Victorian downtown, and Fort Clatsop where guests explore the landscape of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The ship cruises upstream, through the Bonneville Dam locks and to Multnomah Falls. A guided hike takes travelers to the heart of the Columbia Gorge through a fern-filled forest, and a tasting of Hood River Valley wine ends the day. Day five takes the ship to the mouth of the Palouse River for kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, and wildlife viewing. A guided whitewater rafting adventure on the Deschutes comes with a picnic lunch and visit to Columbia Hills State Park. The next day's hikers are rewarded with views of the river, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, the Columbia River Gorge, and a farewell dinner before the return to Portland.

UnCruise Adventures - Belize Cruise: Wonders, Rivers, Reefs, and Mayan Culture

Adventurers board the Safari Voyager in Belize City for the seven-day cruise , then head to the Belize Barrier Reef and Ranguana Caye, a private island, for snorkeling, swimming, and paddle boarding. At Laughing Bird Caye National Park, kayak or snorkel among angelfish, parrotfish, sea sponges, and coral before setting sail for Guatemala. A hike through a tropical rainforest with more than 400 species of plants and animals is next. In Punta Gorda, guests visit the local market before a trip to Mayan ruins. There's also a birdwatching skiff tour, hike, or kayak trip to see black howler monkeys, deer, crocodiles, and more than 300 species of birds. The cruise ends with the captain's dinner before returning to Belize City.

Abercrombie & Kent - The Northwest Passage: From Greenland to the Bering Sea

This 24-day cruise combines adventure and luxury, with private balconies, butler service, French-inspired cuisine, and afternoon tea along with Zodiac trips, icebergs, and wildlife. Starting in Montreal, guests explore the city before flying to Western Greenland to board the ship. Cruising iceberg-strewn fjords, visiting Inuit villages, dog sledding, and seeing ancient huts are on the itinerary. The ship cruises into the Canadian Arctic Archipelago of Nunavut and enters the Northwest Passage with excursions that may include shore landings, whale sightings, and visits to historic towns. In the Northwest Territories, opportunities include tours of an Inuit town and the chance to see the "Smoking Hills," cliffs of bituminous shale that constantly combust and burn, a rare geological phenomenon. Cruise the Yukon Territory and Alaskan coast before disembarking in Nome.

Quark - Canada's Remote Arctic: Northwest Passage to Ellesmere and Axel Heiberg Islands

The 12-day trip begins in Toronto with a flight to Resolute, Nunavut where guests explore the town before boarding the expedition vessel Ultramarine , equipped with two helicopters and 20 Zodiacs. The next days are spent cruising among the remote islands of the Canadian High Arctic and navigating icy inlets with the goal of reaching some of the most remote places on the planet: the rarely visited Ellesmere Island and Axel Heiberg Island with its famous fossil forest. Weather and ice conditions determine the route under the constant guidance of the skilled Expedition Team. Zodiac cruises, land excursions, sightseeing flights, an education program, wildlife viewing, and community visits fill the days. Wildlife includes sea mammals, birds, polar bears, muskox, and possibly arctic wolves.

Adventure Canada - Newfoundland Circumnavigation

The 12-day trip begins in St. John's, capital of Newfoundland, with an evening departure of the Ocean Endeavor , equipped with 20 Zodiacs and advanced navigation equipment. Cruising northeast, the ship passes icebergs, whales, seabirds, picturesque villages, and rocky shores. At L'Anse aux Meadows, guests visit a reconstructed Viking habitation and learn about the remains of the Norse settlement. In Labrador, at the Red Bay Basque Whaling Station, they learn about the whalers of the 1500s. On the west coast, they hike through Gros Morne National Park for views of Bonne Bay. Cruise past the bays, coves, and communities of southern Newfoundland, and get close to wildlife in a Zodiac. Guests are welcomed by local leaders of the First Nations Miawpukek to learn about their community, and then stop in Saint-Pierre, an official territory of France just off the shores of Newfoundland, before returning to St. John's.

Viking Expeditions - Undiscovered Great Lakes: Thunder Bay to Milwaukee Expedition Cruise

The eight-day trip crosses the width of Lake Superior beginning in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada where Fort William recreates an early 19th-century fur trading post, and guests can hike granite cliffs and discover Kakabeka Falls. In Duluth, Minnesota, options include a journey along Lake Superior on the North Shore Scenic Railroad and a paddle down the St. Louis River. The Apostle Islands of Wisconsin feature coniferous forests, dune bogs, lagoons, and sea caves for exploring in kayaks. In Houghton, Michigan, discover the area's 7,000 years of copper mining history and descend 370 feet into the Quincy Mine to learn about working underground. Choose a hike to Hungarian Falls or kayak among local birdlife. Next, the ship passes through the Soo Locks in the St. Mary's River between Lake Huron and Lake Superior, before landing in Mackinac Island for a day. The cruise ends in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Ranking Methodology

Criteria & scoring.

To rank the adventure travel companies on our list we used 5 main criteria, as follows:

We researched the web traffic statistics as measured by SimilarWeb.com and social media audiences as measured by followers on Facebook and Instagram, and subscribers on Youtube. We created a popularity score for 1. Web Traffic and 2. Social Media presence on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 6. Weighting: 5%

Review Profile

We analysed the public review profiles of each of the travel companies focusing on the major independent 3rd party review platforms like Trustpilot, Tourradar, Stride, Tripadvisor, Feefo and Facebook. We divided our review score into two parts: 1. Size of Review Profile, and 2. Overall Quality of Reviews. Each part was scored on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 6. Weighting: 80%

Responsible Travel Practices

We reviewed each travel operator's website and read their statements about responsible travel / ethics / sustainability. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

Awards and Accreditations

We explored each travel operator's website to uncover evidence of accreditations like ABTA, ATOL, ATTA and AITO (among others), and official awards / recognitions from the travel industry. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

Breadth of Offering

We analysed the breadth and scale of each operator's tour offerings, focusing on the number of tours offered, countries covered and number of activities. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

We recognise that smaller travel companies would struggle to compete on some of the criteria above.

For example, a small tour operator would most likely have significantly less web traffic and a smaller social presence than a big travel operator. Equally, they would likely have a smaller scale and breadth of offering.

To provide a level playing field, we therefore weighted our overall score heavily towards 3rd party reviews - a criteria that all operators can fairly compete on.

The total review score counts 80% towards the overall score, with the rest of the criteria accounting for 20%.

Table of Adventure Travel Company Data

Below is the raw data we captured for each adventure travel company during our analysis. Please note, metrics like traffic, social media followers and reviews are dynamic and change overtime. The data below is a snapshot of these metrics as of April / May 2019.

We will revise these numbers annually.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Will she make it in time? Intrepid flight trackers online seem to think so.

On social media , fans of Taylor Swift and aviation journalists believe they’ve identified Swift’s private jet, labeled “The Football Era.” It arrived from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Los Angeles’ LAX airport just after 3:30 p.m. local time.

Odds were always high that a Super Bowl in Las Vegas would be wild. The Chiefs and 49ers — and Taylor Swift, of course — are a good bet to deliver. AP NFL writer Rob Maaddi has more.

Her transportation plans onward to Las Vegas, where her boyfriend, NFL star tight end Travis Kelce, will play in Sunday’s Super Bowl, have yet to be revealed.

Representatives for Swift and VistaJet, the world’s only global private aviation company, did not immediately respond to AP’s request for comment.

This photo provided by the Reading Fightin Phils shows Taylor Swift singing the national anthem before a Reading Fightin Phils minor league baseball game at First Energy Stadium in Reading, Pa., April 5, 2007. Taylor Swift got her singing career started by performing the national anthem at sporting events as a young child and teenager. (Reading Fightin Phils via AP)

Swift’s last song was still ringing in the ears of thousands of fans at the Tokyo Dome on Saturday night when the singer rushed to a private jet at Haneda airport, presumably embarking on an intensely scrutinized journey to see Kelce.

“We’re all gonna go on a great adventure,” Swift told the crowd earlier. She was speaking of the music, but it might also describe her race against time, which was to cross nine time zones and the international date line.

With a final bow at the end of her sold-out show, clad in a blue sequined outfit, the crowd screaming, strobe lights pulsing, confetti falling, Swift disappeared beneath the stage and her journey to the other side of the world began.

For weeks, scrutiny over Taylor Swift’s travel in private jets has been bubbling up on social media. But should the singer be the only one taking the heat? AP’s Natalia Gutiérrez has more.

Her expected trip to see Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas has fired imaginations, and speculation, for weeks.

“I hope she can return in time. It’s so romantic,” said office worker Hitomi Takahashi, 29, who bought matching Taylor Swift sweatshirts with her friend and was taking photos just outside the Tokyo Dome.

About an hour after the end of the concert, AP journalists were near Haneda’s private jet area when minivans drove up and someone went inside the gate area, as four to five people carrying large black umbrellas obstructed the view of the person.

There was plenty of evidence at the concert of the unique cultural phenomenon that is the Swift-Kelce relationship, a nexus of professional football and the huge star power of Swift. In addition to people wearing sequined dresses celebrating Swift, there were Kelce jerseys and hats and other Chiefs gear.

Some spent thousands of dollars to attend the pop superstar’s concerts this week.

“Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone,” Swift sang.

People wait in line near a poster to take their pictures with, as others, right, react to their selfie before Taylor Swift's concert at Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. (AP Photo/Hiro Komae)

She won’t find that Sunday in Las Vegas when a sold-out crowd, not to mention millions around the world, will be watching her.

To call the worldwide scrutiny of Swift’s travels intense is an understatement.

Fans have tracked her jet. The planet-warming carbon emissions of her globe-trotting travels have been criticized. Officials have weighed in on her ability to park her jet at Las Vegas airports.

Even Japanese diplomats have gotten into the act. The Japanese Embassy in Washington posted on social media that she could make the Super Bowl in time, including in their statement three Swift song titles — “Speak Now”, “Fearless” and “Red.”

“If she departs Tokyo in the evening after her concert, she should comfortably arrive in Las Vegas before the Super Bowl begins,” it said.

Takahashi, the fan at the Tokyo Dome, was aware of the criticism Swift has faced about her private jets but said the singer was being singled out unfairly.

“Many other people are flying on business, and she is here for her work. She faces a bashing because she is famous and stands out,” Takahashi said.

Swift has been crisscrossing the globe this week.

Before coming to Asia, she attended the Grammys in Los Angeles, winning her 14th Grammy and a record-breaking fourth Album of the Year award for “Midnights.” The show was watched by nearly 17 million people . She also made a surprise announcement that her next album is ready to drop in April.

Then the four concerts in Tokyo, and now the trip back to the States. She has followed Kelce for much of the Chiefs’ season .

Swift is expected to fly to Australia later this week to continue her tour.

“This week is truly the best kind of chaos,” she posted Wednesday on Instagram.

Roar of Time and Spacial Rend Adventure Effect in Pokémon Go explained

Will you bend time or space?

Adventure Effects is a new Pokémon Go feature introduced as part of the Go Tour: Sinnoh event in February 2024 and, at the time of writing, it has two forms - Roar of Time and Spacial Rend .

Each one is tied to a specific Pokémon - Origin Forme Dialga for the Roar of Time Adventure Effect and Origin Forme Palkia for the Spacial Rend Adventure Effect. This means if you want to use the Pokémon Go Adventure Effects, you need to catch one of these Pokémon.

Below we not only investigate the bonus and cost for both Roar of Time and Spacial Rend , but take a look at how Adventure Effects work and how to get the Origin Formes in Pokémon Go.

On this page:

Roar of Time Adventure Effect bonus and cost in Pokémon Go

Spacial rend adventure effect bonus and cost in pokémon go, how to use an adventure effect in pokémon go, how to get an origin forme dialga and palkia with an adventure effect in pokémon go.

The Roar of Time Adventure Effect can only be used by Origin Forme Dialga in Pokémon Go. It has the power to pause the timers for Incense, Lucky Eggs, Star Piece and, most helpfully of all, Daily Adventure Incense .

Using the Roar of Time Adventure Effect for six minutes costs 5,000 Stardust and five Dialga Candy .

10 adventures tours

Its duration can be increased in six minute increments up to a maximum of two hours. Extending Roar of Time to the two hour limit costs 100,000 Stardust and 100 Dialga Candy .

Roar of Time can be further increased up to a maximum of 24 hours, but reaching this total will set you back 1,200,000 Stardust and 1,200 Dialga Candy so you might want to think that decision over...

Finally, Roar of Time can be used in battle and will have the following Power:

  • Trainer Battles - 150 Power
  • Gyms and Raids - 160 Power

The Spacial Rend Adventure Effect can only be used by Origin Forme Palkia in Pokémon Go. Using it will increase the distance at which you can encounter wild Pokémon and adds a cool effect to the map.

Using the Spacial Rend Adventure Effect for 10 minutes costs 5,000 Stardust and 5 Palkia Candy .

10 adventures tours

Its duration can be increased in 10 minute increments up to a maximum of two hours. Extending Spacial Rend to this two hour limit costs 60,000 Stardust and 60 Palkia Candy .

You can also further increase Spacial Rend's duration for up to 24 hours. Doing so, however, will cost you 720,000 Stardust and 720 Palkia Candy. While that's less than the 24 hour cost of Roar of Time, it's still quite the investment so make sure you're going to fully use this Adventure Effect by spending it.

Spacial Rend can also be used in battle and has the following Power:

  • Trainer Battles - 95 Power

The Season of Timeless Travels in Pokémon Go is coming to an end with the Go Tour: Sinnoh Global event. During this event you can complete Go Tour 2024: It's About Time and Space , Legends 0486 quest and use the new Adventure Effects by catching either Origin Forme Dialga and Origin Forme Palkia . During it, take the time to try out Routes , Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon , fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases .

To use an Adventure Effect in Pokémon Go, you must first ensure you have the Pokémon which knows the move connected to that effect; this is Origin Forme Dialga for Roar of Time and Origin Forme Palkia for Spacial Rend .

Keep in mind that these moves can not be learned via any TM and can only be obtained if you catch a Pokémon which already knows them. Regular form Diagla and Palkia can also not learn or use the Roar of Time or Spacial Rend Adventure Effect moves and, although it can learn the attacks of Pokémon it appears with, neither can Smeargle.

It's also very important to remember that you can only use one Adventure Effect at one time . This means if you've activated Spacial Rend to increase the number of spawns you encounter, you can not then use Roar of Time to pause your Lucky Egg or Daily Adventure Incense timer. Thankfully, Pokémon Go will point this out to you when you attempt to activate that second Adventure Effect, but it is something you should factor into your play if you're planning on utilising an Adventure Effect.

10 adventures tours

With these caveats out of the way, it's time to discuss how you actually use an Adventure Effect and, thankfully, it's very easy.

To use an Adventure Effect you must first find, depending on which one you wish to use, either Origin Forme Dialga or Palkia in your Pokémon storage. Once there, open up their dedicated page and scroll down to the Adventure Effect section which lies beneath their moveset. (You can't miss it.)

You now need to select 'Use' to bring up the window where you decide how much Stardust and Candy you wish to spend on the Adventure Effect. The more Stardust and Candy you spend, the more time you have with this Adventure Effect.

10 adventures tours

The timer for Roar of Time increases in six minute increments, while Spacial Rend increases in 10 minute increments. The maximum time an Adventure Effect timer can be set is two hours and this can be done multiple times for a total of 24 hours.

Extending an Adventure Effect to its maximum limit will, of course, cost an awful lot of Candy and Stardust, so, if actually going to try this, we highly recommend ensuring you get the most out of the effect.

10 adventures tours

When you're happy with how long your Adventure Effect is going to last (and how much it's going to cost you), select 'Use' once again to activate the effect. You'll get a cool little cutscene of Origin Forme Dialga or Palkia using their special attack before you can start using your bonus.

A timer will appear on the right-hand side of your screen when an Adventure Effect is active to let you know how long you have until the bonuses vanish and, remember, you can always pay the cost to extend an Adventure Effects duration.

10 adventures tours

At the time of writing, Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia have only been made available during the Go Tour: Sinnoh Los Angeles and Go Tour: Sinnoh Global events during February 2024 in Pokémon. Considering the distribution history of similar Legendary Pokémon forms, like Primal Groudon and Kyogre , it feels safe to assume they will return at some point during specific events.

10 adventures tours

This does mean, however, you only have a limited window in which you can catch an Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia who know their Adventure Effects.

As mentioned on the official Pokémon Go blog , your choice between the Diamond and Pearl versions of the Go Tour: Sinnoh event affects your chances of encountering Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia's who know their Adventure Effect attacks.

If you selected Diamond, then you'll encounter an Origin Forme Dialga that knows Roar of Time. Meanwhile, choosing Pearl means you'll have an encounter with an Origin Forme Palkia who knows Spacial Rend.

Also, thanks to a post on reddit from r/TheSilphRoad , we now know that it is possible to catch the other Origin Form Pokémon with their Adventure Effect attacks but it's extremely rare to do so. So if you chose the Diamond path you have a slim chance of getting an Origin Forme Palkia with Spacial Rend.

10 adventures tours

During Go Tour: Sinnoh Global, you'll be able to battle Origin Forme Dialga and Origin Forme Palkia in five-star raids during the Ancient Grove and Geothermal Lagoon habitat hours .

Go Tour: Sinnoh Global runs on both Saturday 24th February and Sunday 25th February, with the habitat hour appearing during the following times no matter where you live:

  • 11am to 12pm - Ancient Grove
  • 1pm to 2pm - Geothermal Lagoon
  • 3pm to 4pm - Ancient Grove
  • 5pm to 6pm - Geothermal Lagoon

Keep in mind that the Remote Raid Pass limit has been removed for this event, so you're free to use these passes in conjunction with apps like Poké Genie as much as you and, by doing so, you're not constrained by the hours listed above.

If you manage to defeat and catch either Origin Forme Dialga or Palkia, there's a chance - again according to the official Pokémon Go blog - that they will know their Adventure Effect.

Good luck using Adventure Effects in Pokémon Go!

The Match 2024 odds, predictions, bets: Golf expert reveals picks for McIlroy, Homa, Thompson, Zhang

Mike mcclure locked in his picks for the match 9 featuring rory mcilroy, max homa, lexi thompson and rose zhang.

10 adventures tours

Four of the top golfers on the PGA and LPGA tours will compete for charity on Monday at 6:30 p.m. ET in The Match 9 at The Park in West Palm Beach, Florida. Unlike recent editions, it will be an individual format, so the golfer who finishes with the most skins money across the 12 holes will win. Each hole is worth a dollar amount for charity, with the money raised going to the First Tee, a golf organization for children. Rory McIlroy is the +210 favorite (risk $100 to win $210) in The Match odds, followed by Max Homa (+230), Rose Zhang (+300) and Lexi Thompson (+300).

All four competitors will use the same tees for the four par-3 holes, while there will be different tees and yardages for the men and women on the other eight holes. Which golfer should you target with your The Match 2024 bets? Before locking in any Match 9 bets, be sure to see Match IX picks and predictions from SportsLine's proven golf expert, Mike McClure .

McClure's model has returned more than $9,000 on $100 best bets since June of 2020 and has called the winner of 10 major tournaments entering the weekend. McClure was also all over Brooks Koepka defeating Bryson DeChambeau as a +110 underdog in The Match V and nailed Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth for an easy win over Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in The Match VII.  Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now, with The Match 9 set to tee off on Monday, McClure has scoured the golf odds and locked in his top picks. Head to SportsLine now to see McClure's best bet for The Match IX .

The Match IX golfers, format

McIlroy is a four-time major champion and 24-time PGA winner, so he headlines this event as one of the biggest names in golf. However, Thompson is an 11-time winner on the LPGA Tour and Zhang is one of the sport's rising stars, having won her first event last year at the age of 20. Homa has won six PGA events, with his most recent victory coming at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2023.

The format is designed to level the playing field, as the women will start on different tees for eight of the 12 holes. All four golfers will be wearing microphones and will be on camera throughout the evening, providing a unique look at the personalities participating in the event. It is taking place after dusk under the lights, which can add a few challenges as well.  See which golfer to back at SportsLine .
