Jessie diggins claims tour de ski; sophia laukli wins first world cup.

  • OlympicTalk ,
  • OlympicTalk

Jessie Diggins won a second Tour de Ski title and may be en route to the most successful World Cup season in U.S. cross-country skiing history.

Diggins, an Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist, won the Tour de Ski, a Tour de France-like stage competition, by 31.6 seconds combining results from seven days of racing different events.

She powered through the final two stages on Saturday and Sunday after being injured in a crash on Thursday before a rest day.

Fellow American Sophia Laukli won Sunday’s finale, including a 2.2-mile climb up Alpe Cermis in Italy with an average gradient of 11.6 percent. It was Laukli’s first World Cup victory. At 23, she became the youngest U.S. cross-country skier to win a World Cup.

Laukli is a Maine native who is a dual citizen of Norway, where her father is from.

Diggins began the day with a 43-second lead in the Tour standings, greater than the margin separating second place from sixth place. She finished sixth in Sunday’s stage to comfortably win the overall title.

In 2021, Diggins became the first skier outside Europe to win a Tour, which at the time was the biggest individual title of her career. She since won her first two individual Olympic medals (silver and bronze) and last February became the first American to win an individual world title in the sport.

This season, she has three individual World Cup race wins and eight podiums at the midpoint.

By wins and podiums, Kikkan Randall owned the best season by a U.S. cross-country skier before this year — five individual race wins and nine podiums in 2012-13.

Diggins also leads the standings for the World Cup overall title, crowning the world’s best all-around cross-country skier, by 308 points. In 2021, when Diggins became the first American woman to win the overall, her final margin was 268 points.

The Tour de Ski is arguably the crown jewel of this season because there are no Olympics or world championships.

But Diggins has another carrot ahead -- a World Cup stop in her home state of Minnesota from Feb. 17-18. It’s the first cross-country World Cup to be held in the U.S. since 2001.

Tour de Ski 2022-23: Preview, schedule, format, and how to watch cross-country stars including Klaebo and Diggins in the multi-stage event

Norway's Johannes Klæbo defends his Tour de Ski crown, as American Jessie Diggins bids to regain the title she won two years ago on the FIS World Cup circuit

One of the highlights of the cross-country skiing season, the 2022-23 Tour de Ski, gets underway in Val Muestair, Switzerland on New Year's Eve.

Reigning men's champion Johannes Klæbo will be strongly fancied to retain his crown, while Jessie Diggins is bidding to regain the title she won two years ago when she became the first non-European winner of the Tour de Ski.

The skiers will take part in seven stages with just two rest days, with the climax on the famously steep and gruelling Alpe Cermis Final Climb mass start in Val di Fiemme.

The 17th Tour de Ski is the first where the men and women will race equal distances after the FIS made all World Cup races the same length across genders.

Read on to find out all you need to know about this year's edition of the Tour de Ski including a full schedule and the skiers to watch.

When is the 2022-23 Tour de Ski?

The 2022-23 Tour de Ski starts with the freestyle sprint at Val Muestair in Switzerland on Saturday 31 December 2022.

The skiers have two races in Val Muestair and then two at Oberstdorf in Germany before ending with three at Val di Fiemme in Italy.

The concluding freestyle Final Climb mass start of Alpe Cermis is on Sunday 8 January 2023.

2022-23 Tour de Ski format

While the Tour de Ski races are FIS cross-country World Cup events with the standard point-scoring system, the overall standings for the Tour de Ski itself are decided on time like the Tour de France bicycle race on which it is based.

Time bonuses are awarded on both sprint legs (stages 1 and 3) - 60 seconds to the winner down to four for finishing last in the quarter-finalists - which are taken off the aggregate time.

On the mass start in Stage 6, there is an intermediate sprint with the leader at that point earning 15 bonus seconds down to one second for 10th place.

The leader of the overall standing wears a yellow bib , again like the Tour de France yellow jersey.

There is also a point standing for the best sprinter with the winner claiming a red bib.

Finally, there is a team competition where the times of the best two athletes per gender per country on each stage are added together.

Skiers to watch

Johannes klæbo.

The sprint king started the season under something of an injury cloud with damage to the tendon attaching the hamstring in his right leg to his pelvis muscles.

Despite being unable to train as much as usual, five-time Olympic gold medallist Klæbo managed to start the World Cup campaign with a bang with three wins on the opening weekend in Ruka, Finland.

A week later, the Norwegian was forced to miss the 10km freestyle in Lillehammer before taking yet another sprint victory.

Illness saw Klaebo miss the two races in Beitostølen, but he returned in Davos earlier this month (17 December) to take sprint second behind Italian veteran Federico Pellegrino and fifth in the 20km freestyle race.

While his focus for the season is the 2023 World Championships in Planica, Slovenia at the end of February, it would be foolish to bet against the 26-year-old Norwegian collecting a third Tour de Ski title.

Jessie Diggins

Diggins keeps rewriting the history books, with her victory in last Sunday's 20km freestyle race in Davos seeing the American take her World Cup win tally to 14 , more than any other cross-country skier from the U.S..

That was her second win of the season, leaving her second in the overall World Cup standings. A day earlier, she took second in the sprint behind Swiss skier Nadine Faehdrich .

The 31-year-old from Minnesota made headlines when she and Kikkan Randall - whose World Cup win record she broke in Davos - won team sprint gold at PyeongChang 2018, claiming Team USA's first ever title in cross-country skiing.

But she has proved herself equally adept over longer distances over the years, and successfully lobbied for women's World Cup race lengths to be extended to match the men's.

And with last year's winner Natalia Nepryayeva absent due to Russia's ban from competition, Diggins is one of the favourites for this year's title.

Paal Golberg

Klæbo leads a strong Norwegian men's team for the Tour de Ski although it is Paal Golberg who currently leads the overall World Cup standings.

The 32-year-old has been supremely consistent this term, finishing in the top six in every race and winning two of them: the 20km classic mass start at Lillehammer and the 10km classic in Beitostolen.

And despite missing Davos with a cold, Golberg remains ahead in the distance and overall World Cup.

In his two previous Tour de Ski appearances, he finished sixth in 2019-20 and fifth last year.

Better is expected this time although he will face plenty of competition from within his own team with Klæbo, Simen Hegstad Kruger , Hans Holund and Sjur Røthe sweeping the podium in the last race before Christmas.

Consistency counts for a lot in the Tour de Ski, and Tiril Weng has shown plenty of that recently.

While the Norwegian is yet to claim an individual World Cup win, she has finished every race this season inside the top nine with five of those being on the podium.

The 26-year-old was only 10th in her third Tour de Ski last year, but she stands second in the distance World Cup rankings and top of the sprint World Cup.

Just two points ahead of her in the distance class is teammate Anne Kalvaa who is having a breakout year at the age of 30.

There will be no fewer than three members of the Weng family taking part with Tiril's twin sister Lotte and her third cousin, two-time Tour de Ski winner Heidi Weng , also lining up.

Andrew Musgrave

Great Britain may not be one of the powerhouse nations of cross-country skiing, but Andrew Musgrave has been challenging for podium finishes over the past six or seven years.

The 32-year-old was fourth in the 50km mass start at the 2017 World Championships and took seventh in the 30km skiathlon at PyeongChang 2018.

While long distances are his speciality, four-time Olympian Musgrave made a World Cup podium for the first time in five years when he took third in the 10km classic race at Beitostolen, Norway earlier this month.

He is currently fourth in the distance World Cup standings and looks certain to improve on his best finish in the Tour de Ski which was 15th in 2018.

Frida Karlsson

With two wins in 20km races this season, Frida Karlsson looks to be among the top contenders for this edition of the Tour de Ski.

A three-time junior world champion, Karlsson has long been touted for big things.

And the 23-year-old has picked up where she left off last season when she took second place in the distance World Cup and finished top of the U23 World Cup standings.

Teammate Ebba Andersson is another athlete to watch after she beat Karlsson on the opening weekend of the campaign in the 10km classic race in Ruka, Finland.

With three podium finishes to her name this season, Andersson will be looking to complete her full set of Tour de Ski finishes after taking third place in 2020-21 and second place last time.

While neither skier is particularly suited to sprint races, both should be well and truly in the mix in the general classification with their prowess over longer distances.

2024 US Open: Alexa Noel turns pro after winning an NCAA tennis title at the University of Miami

By howard fendrich, associated press | updated - aug. 19, 2024 at 4:45 a.m. | posted - aug. 19, 2024 at 4:00 a.m..

Estimated read time: 4-5 minutes

NCAA champion Alexa Noel's debut as a professional tennis player arrives next week at the U.S. Open — a decade after she went to Flushing Meadows with a racket in hand for the first time.

When she was about 11, the now-21-year-old American recalled, she was invited to a camp run by the U.S. Tennis Association at the site of the year's last Grand Slam tournament.

"They let us stand on (the court in Arthur) Ashe (Stadium)," Noel said in a video interview with The Associated Press. "And I was like, 'This is so cool. I want to be here one day.'"

Noel earned this trip to New York, and a spot in her first Slam singles bracket, by winning a title for the University of Miami as a redshirt junior in May, the same month she graduated with a degree in sociology. She is giving up her final year of NCAA eligibility to go pro; Thursday's draw will determine her first opponent.

"She's ready. She's a pretty confident player and she likes challenges," said her coach, Lorenzo Cava, who used to work with 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. "To be thrown into such an important event, there can be a question mark: How will she react? To the environment? To the big stage? To the pressure?"

As someone who showed promise at age 16 by reaching Wimbledon's junior final, Noel now aims to emulate the sort of success seen recently for athletes who went to college before heading to the tour.

That group includes NCAA champs Ben Shelton of Florida, a 2023 U.S. Open semifinalist; Danielle Collins of Virginia, a 2022 Australian Open finalist; Emma Navarro of Virginia, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist in July; and Peyton Stearns of Texas, who reached the fourth round in New York a year ago.

"It allows players to have somewhere to go, grow up, mature, become physically stronger, have some type of responsibility outside of just tennis," Noel said, "and then give pro tennis a shot."

She will walk away from the U.S. Open, where play begins Aug. 26, with a minimum of $100,000 , the amount earned by players losing in the first round.

"That's a ton of money. It's going to support me for a little bit," she said. "It's hard to start from zero."

This is, in a sense, a home-court appearance for Noel, who grew up in New Jersey from age 9; she was born in Arizona, lived in Toronto for a few years — picking up tennis at a summer camp — and now is based in Florida. In addition to her parents and an uncle, there will be childhood friends and college pals in the stands.

Ticket requests began pouring in after Noel clinched the wild-card entry the USTA awards to Americans winning college singles championships.

"I try and manage that the best way I can without being mean or without being too welcoming," she said with a laugh. "It's such a fine line, you know?"

Asked to describe herself as a player, Noel doesn't start by mentioning a particular stroke — her serve, say, or forehand — or style, instead offering this: "I'm pretty passionate."

"I use a lot of energy. Physically, emotionally, I'm just very invested in every point," she said. "Sometimes I take it overboard, but that's definitely a big part of who I am."

Cava, her coach, says Noel "has a clear idea of her level and what the real world out there looks like and what she needs" to rise in the rankings. (She is outside the top 750).

"She can attack. She can defend. She has all the strokes," Cava said. "One of her main objectives is to become much more aggressive."

He's sure Noel won't be intimidated by the stage, in part because she's been there before.

There was that camp all those years ago. A wild-card appearance in doubles in 2019 after winning a title for teenagers. And, in 2018, a first-round junior singles match at Court 5, with its seating capacity of about 1,100.

She saved a match point that evening and came back to win — before losing to Emma Raducanu , who would go on three years later to become the U.S. Open champion — but what sticks out for Noel is not the result so much as the vociferous spectators who wandered over after the day session in nearby Ashe ended.

"Those people were probably like, 'Oh, my God. It's an American. Let me stop and look.' I have super fond memories," Noel said. "I'm excited to make some more."

Tour de Ski 2024: All the Dates, Distances and Facts.

7 stages in 9 days and 3 locations. On the menu there are races of all sorts: skate, classic, sprint, distance, and the iconic brutal climb up Alpe Cermis in Val di Fiemme (ITA).

The Tour de Ski is an annual highlight for many racers, but in a season with no major international championships, the prestigious stage race becomes even more important.

The schedule for the 18th edition of the FIS cross-country stage race features 7 stages in 9 days and as with all the previous 17 editions of the Tour de Ski, there will be blood, sweat, tears, duels and drama before the overall winners receive their trophies.

See complete schedule day by day below

The Tour de Ski is designed to be the ultimate test of skills, versatility, endurance and perseverance. Over the course of the various stages, skiers face both sprints, distance races, mass start and individual start events in both skate and classic technique. It all leads to the brutal finish of the competition with the infamous final stage up the alpine run Alpe Cermis.

For several of the Madshus racers, the Tour de Ski carries a little extra novelty:

Harald Østberg Amundsen (NOR), who was ninth overall in his first Tour de Ski two years ago, is super excited about the upcoming stage race.

“In my head, the Tour de Ski is super important. It's a concept that I find really exciting, and the Tour schedule for this season should fit my strengths to a T. The first time I did the Tour, I was ninth overall, but that's two years ago and I've come a long way since then,” says the 25-year-old, and continues:

“In order to excel in the Tour de Ski, you have to handle everything from sprints to distance events, and all the different formats. I have done pretty well in sprint races lately, and I've improved my classic technique a lot, two areas that I've put a lot of effort into and that are key in order to challenge the overall favorites. I think I'm in a position to do that now, and that fires me up a lot.”

Ben Ogden (USA) posted his best-ever result in a World Cup individual race during the Tour de Ski last year. In brutal conditions on day three of the 2023 Tour de Ski, the 22-year-old from Vermont was 6th in the 10-kilometer classic race in Oberstdorf (GER).

And finally, Edvin Anger (SWE) is looking at his first go at the Tour de Ski. Last year, the 21-year-old was named to the Swedish team to the 2023 World Championships just days before the Tour. He therefore opted to sit out the stage race in order to prepare for his first major championship at the elite level.

All about the final climb of Alpe Cermis The brutal Alpe Cermis signature stage of the Tour de Ski has been a part of the stage race since the very first Tour de Ski edition, back in 2007.

For the second day in a row, a home talent took the win at the PostNord Tour of Denmark as Tobias Lund Andresen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) took stage victory in Haderslev ahead of race leader Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny).

In third place was fellow Dane and stage 2 winner Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility), sprinting from the peloton after reeling in the day’s break less than 1.5km from the finish line.

The breakaway contained Jakub Kaczmarek (Mazowsze Serce Polski), Victor Vercouillie (Team Flanders-Baloise), Andreas Stokbro (Leopard TOGT Pro Cycling), Mads Andersen (Restaurant Suri-Carl Ras), Martin Szokody (Giotti Victoria-Savini Due), Cole Kessler (EF Education-EasyPost) and Aksel Bech Skot-Hansen (Riwal Cycling Team). It hovered achingly close to being caught for the final 10km, but held out with strong cooperation before being reeled in within sight of the Flamme Rouge.

De Lie holds five seconds over Cort after today’s time bonuses, as the race enters the penultimate stage on Saturday from Store Heddinge to Holbæk.

ALPE D'HUEZ, France (AP) — Polish rider Kasia Niewiadoma did just enough in a thrilling battle Sunday with rival Demi Vollering on the iconic Alpe d’Huez to win the women’s Tour de France by four seconds overall.

It was the smallest margin of victory in any Tour de France edition, including the men's race.

“It’s so crazy, this Tour has been a crazy roller-coaster,” Niewiadoma said after the eighth and final stage. “I’ve had bad moments. I hated every moment of this last climb, but when I heard that I had won the Tour de France, I could not believe it.”

Niewiadoma sat on the road after finishing, exhausted and waiting to get the confirmation that she had won. When the news finally came, she lifted her bike in triumph and appeared overwhelmed by the magnitude of her achievement.

Knowing she still trailed Niewiadoma overall, Vollering had been part of a breakaway Sunday with fellow Dutch rider Pauliena Rooijakkers earlier in the race. Vollering accelerated powerfully in the final stretch to win the stage.

But the gap wasn't quite enough as Niewiadoma finished fourth to narrowly clinch her first Tour title, with an overall time of 24 hours, 36 minutes, 7 seconds. Vollering's final time was 24:36:11.

Vollering, the defending champion, had fought back after suffering a crash in the fifth stage. She was inconsolable when she learned she had finished second overall after starting the stage more than a minute behind Niewiadoma overall.

“Right now I feel really bitter that I only lost by four seconds,” Vollering said. “It's really painful to know that I did not do enough today.”

Rooijakkers, also a title contender, finished third in the overall standings at only 10 seconds behind Niewiadoma.

Positive Snow Control for Tour de Ski 2022/23

10 days before the start of the 17th edition of the FIS Tour de Ski presented by Le Gruyère AOP , all three organizers together with their National Ski Federations and the FIS Cross-Country team approved the snow conditions for the event series.

From 31st December to 8th January, the Tour will stop in Switzerland's Val Müstair for two stages, before moving on to the former World Championships tracks of Oberstdorf, Germany. Traditionally, the Tour de Ski celebrates its final stages - with three race days this year - in Val di Fiemme, the venue of the Cross-Country competitions for the Olympic Winter Games 2026.

7 stages in 8 days are scheduled to bring the Cross-Country elite through middle Europe and give them the best possible preparation for the World Ski Championships that are to come in February 2023 in Planica (SLO).
