Star Trek Is Spread Out Across 3 Streaming Services Now - Where To Watch

  • Star Trek fans can find every Star Trek show except Star Trek: Prodigy on Paramount+.
  • Paramount+ is the streaming home for all Chris Pine Star Trek movies.
  • The 6 Star Trek: The Original Series movies and 4 Star Trek: The Next Generation movies can be found on Max.

The Star Trek franchise is now spread across three separate streaming services, meaning that fans may wish to have a road map to find where they can watch their favorite Trek shows and movies. For clarity, this split is for Star Trek fans in the US, as the specifics of geo-blocking and streaming rights vary from country to country. However, US fans aren't alone in having multiple ways to access the franchise. For example, Star Trek fans in the UK can still watch all the legacy shows on Netflix until their streaming rights lapse, while Paramount+ has everything bar Star Trek: Prodigy .

Meanwhile, in the United States, Paramount+ holds the majority of Star Trek , with some notable exceptions. Paramount+ controversially removed Star Trek: Prodigy when the show was canceled in 2023. At the start of 2024, the pre-Abrams Star Trek movies have a new streaming home as part of an existing deal with another streamer . With some confusion over which shows and movies are on which streamer, it's a good time to look at the three different streaming homes for Star Trek in 2024.

Only Chris Pines Star Trek Movies Remain On Paramount Plus, Fans Unhappy

Every star trek tv series except star trek: prodigy is on paramount+.

Paramount+ subscribers can watch everything from Star Trek: The Original Series all the way to its 2020s prequel series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It's the perfect way for Star Trek fans to draw links across the franchise, allowing subscribers to travel from the world of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard 's 24th century to the far future of Star Trek: Discovery . The final season of Star Trek: Discovery premieres on Paramount+ in April , as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery embark on an intergalactic treasure hunt.

Later in 2024, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will premiere in late Summer/early Fall , picking up on Lower Decks ' season 4's cliffhanger ending . As Lower Decks is a love letter to the franchise's prolific 1990s period, fans have a chance to prepare for more deep-cut references via revisiting 90s classics like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on Paramount+. Showrunner Mike McMahan has also expressed his desire to show some love to Scott Bakula's Star Trek: Enterprise in Lower Decks season 5, making it a perfect time to revisit the prequel show on Paramount+.

Fans of animation can also revisit Lower Decks ' predecessor, Star Trek: The Animated Series , which, despite fan arguments over its canonicity, takes pride of place among the other Trek shows on Paramount+. Star Trek 's other animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy isn't on Paramount+ , owing to its cancelation in 2023. The absence of the backdoor Star Trek: Voyager sequel show on Paramount+ does mean that fans of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and her heroic crew will have to look elsewhere to see how their story continued after returning to the Alpha Quadrant.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Movies Are On Paramount+

J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine's Star Trek movies are also available on Paramount+, representing the franchise's Kelvin timeline. The Kelvin timeline trilogy begins with 2009's Star Trek , in which a crew of young cadets become the heroic crew of the USS Enterprise while foiling the plans of Nero (Eric Bana) in an alternate timeline of his own creation. And then, Star Trek into Darkness remakes the beloved Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with mixed results, casting Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan Noonien-Singh, and introducing Alice Eve as a young Dr. Carol Marcus.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies featured Leonard Nimoy's final appearances as Spock , who acted as a mentor to his younger self, played by Zachary Quinto. The third movie, 2016's Star Trek Beyond, paid tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy, and celebrated the franchise's 50th anniversary. With all three of the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies available on Paramount+, fans have the chance to compare the performances of the exceptional Kelvin timeline cast with their Star Trek: The Original Series predecessors. In doing so, they can see how perfect Abrams' Star Trek movie cast were.

Rebel Moon Proves Star Trek Blew It With J.J. Abrams Movies Best New Character

6 star trek: the original series movies & 4 star trek: the next generation movies are on max.

10 Star Trek movies are currently streaming on Max and are no longer available on Paramount+. All six of the Star Trek: The Original Series movies and the four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies switched to Max on New Year's Day 2024. A similar thing happened before, when Max streamed the 10 TOS and TNG movies on the service between November 2022 and July 2023, suggesting that this is likely a temporary arrangement. Until further notice, however, fans in the US who wish to stream classics like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or Star Trek: First Contact will have to do so via Max.

It's worth pointing out that distribution and streaming rights are different for movies than they are for TV shows, which could explain the temporary agreement between Paramount+ and Max. Many of the Star Trek movies were big commercial hits that had broad crossover appeal for theater audiences. It makes sense, therefore, for a streamer like Max to pick such broadly enjoyable Trek movies like Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home to feature on the service during the cold and miserable winter months.

Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on Netflix

After being canceled by Paramount+, Star Trek: Prodigy spent the second half of 2023 looking for a new streaming home. Prodigy 's cancelation was particularly surprising because a second season was already well into development at the time that the axe fell. The prospect of 20 brand-new episodes of a Star Trek show must have sweetened the deal for Netflix, who bought the streaming rights for Star Trek: Prodigy seasons 1 and 2. Prodigy premiered on Netflix on Christmas Day 2023 , and all 20 episodes of season 1 are available to stream on the service.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will premiere later in 2024, although it's unclear if it will have a weekly release schedule or be dropped on Netflix in one go. Prodigy season 2 is one of the big Star Trek highlights of 2024 so it does feel odd that it will be taking place on Netflix, rather than on Paramount+. Regardless, the wealth of Star Trek shows and movies available to stream across multiple platforms highlights the broad appeal of the franchise to viewers new and old.

Every Star Trek show except Star Trek: Prodigy is now streaming on Paramount+.

Every Chris Pine Star Trek movie is streaming now on Paramount+.

The 6 TOS and 4 TNG movies are streaming now on Max.

All episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 are streaming now on Netflix.

Chris Pine Wonders How ‘Star Trek 4’ Will Deal With Kirk Now That He Is “A Lot Older”

| July 3, 2024 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 66 comments so far

We are just a few weeks away from the 8th anniversary of the release of Star Trek Beyond , the third entry in the Kelvin timeline Star Trek movies staring Chris Pine as James T. Kirk. Paramount continues to say they are committed to a follow up movie, and now the star is starting to wonder how it will deal with how he isn’t getting any younger.

Pine curious about Star Trek 4

For the last couple of years, since he has recommitted to return as James T. Kirk for a fourth Star Trek movie, actor Chris Pine has often expressed his enthusiasm for the return, but also some frustrations. His latest comments from from a recent appearance at ACE Superhero Comic in San Antonio, TX. Pine acknowledged the well-reported ups and downs the Beyond sequel has gone through over the past decade (via PopVerse ), saying “In terms of the next phase of [Star Trek], obviously you’re all fans, so I’m sure you’ve read it.”

The actor then talked about how he and his fellow cast are ready to get back to the Enterprise, but he wonders how the movie will deal with how he is getting older, saying:

“We all like one another a lot. I’m good friends with everybody I’ve worked with. We have a great time doing it. I’m a lot older now, so I would be curious where that next story lands us in terms of what it would be and what we’ve said in the press.”

Pine, now 43, was 29 when he first appeared as James T. Kirk in the 2009 Star Trek movie. Last year the actor talked about how he was hoping to do “many more” movies as Kirk, saying it would be “super cool” to play the same character through the course of his career. Original Kirk actor William Shatner was 35 when the Star Trek television show premiered and 63 when he last appeared as the character in the 1994 film Star Trek: Generations . Pine is still younger than Shatner when he played Admiral Kirk in Star Trek: The Motion Picture  in 1979. In Star Trek Beyond , Kirk turned down a promotion to admiral and was set to head out on a new USS Enterprise (NCC 1701-A). If the next movie were set a decade later, Kirk and his crew could have already completed two 5-year missions.

Various follow-ups to Beyond have been in the works over the last 8 years. In March of this year, it was reported that Paramount and producer J.J. Abrams had brought on yet another screenwriter to take a crack at what the studio is now calling the final movie for the Kelvin crew. Pine later expressed some frustration with this move, telling Business Insider “I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it’s always been with ‘Trek,’ I just wait and see.”

Even now entering middle age, Pine is still keeping it sharp. He recently shaved off his beard (but kept the ‘stache) as can be seen from an appearance at a fashion event in Milan in mid-June…

The next Star Trek feature film expected to come out of Paramount is the “ Untitled Star Trek Origin Story ” which Paramount recently confirmed as part of its 2025/2026 slate. This movie would have a new cast. Earlier this year, Paramount and producer J.J. Abrams had tapped Andor ‘s Toby Haynes to direct, based on a script from Seth Grahame-Smith ( The Lego Batman Movie ). Paramount is also reportedly talking to producer Simon Kinberg about shepherding the film franchise , starting with that origin movie. This next Star Trek movie was mentioned during the Paramount Global shareholder meeting in June with co-CEO Brian Robbins saying it is “coming soon,” and touting Trek as one of the company’s “billion dollar brands.”

Zoe Saldana Is Still Holding Out Hope For ‘Star Trek 4’

This is the longest five-year mission in history…

Just because the TOS timeline had 5-yr.missions, there is no reason the Kelvin timeline would.

They mention it’s a five year mission in one of the movies.

But Into Darkness established that they did, and Beyond confirmed that they were halfway through one.

It certainly is. Eight years since Beyond, wow.

It’s been so long since the last Star Trek movie set in the Kelvin timeline, that by the time they finally make another one none of the crew of the Enterprise will still serve on that ship.

They’ll all have moved on to other assignments, pretty much like the original cast did in The Motion Picture.

I mean I don’t think they can just pick up where they left off in Beyond , so yeah the next one (if it happens) will hopefully skip ahead a decade or so.

At this point, what was it all for? The Kelvin movies did nothing for Star Trek. It was Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, SNW, etc that saved it. The Kelvin movies contributed nothing.

While certainly not my favorite Trek, I would like to see it get a final outing. Of course, as long as that final outing doesn’t come at the expense of other Trek.

Star Trek did not need saving and Discovery has done the franchise no favours.

‘Beyond’ flopped and stalled the movie series. Disc at least has led to multi spin off shows and ST first TVM.

During the moments that worked (not saying there were a ton of them), BEYOND felt a lot more like STAR TREK than anything else I’ve seen this whole century.

didn’t help the film series though.

That seemed to a big reason the movie underperformed!, JJs films seemed to hit that sweet spot of appealing to moviegoers who wouldn’t been seen dead watching ST and the hardcore trekkies (ok maybe not ID for some fans lol), but Beyond missed the target .. Ironically Orci’s ST3 was apparently canned for being ‘too star trek’ yet sounded much more appealing for movie audiences (dealing with time travel/timelines and Shatner) whereas what they eventually did in Beyond sounded/looked so ‘star trek’ it turned off the average Joe moviegoers! plus there was that Fast and Furious action teaser trailer turning off the fans, a double whammy!

That is a flaming photon torpedo of truth. Beyond is generally well liked and appreciated by Trek fans, but I was surprised to find most non-fans I’ve heard from found it, quote, “boring and dull”. I could quite believe that take, but it’s definitely better received by fans than the public. Into Darkness was the reverse.

The biggest mistake was the handling of the villain, hiding Mr Elba under make up but also another of J J style ‘mystery box’ about his identity and motive.

Yup, exactly. Totally agree. What a waste of Mr. Elba’s talent, imo.

Discovery also divided the fan base, destroyed cannon, has the lowest episode scores of any Trek show, and was Cancelled!

Not the same, Disc came to a natural end but didn’t inhibit more ST TV from being made.

I think it’s probably too late to make this movie starting where they left off on the Enterprise. They really would need to write a story where they have to reconnect for one final mission, which might be worth doing. That being said, an aging crew is nothing new for Star Trek.

Bust him back to cadet.

Hey MIchael, I was just googling “Harlan Ellison Nicholas Meyer” and it actually took me to a trekmovie thread from 2017 which we participated in. You mention that you are going to have to buy RETURN TO TOMORROW book at some point. Did you?

I bought the digital edition. Roddenberry says in it that TMP cost 45 million due to them adding on all the costs of the previous scripts, sets etc. For 1979 that was super expensive.

Dee Kelley’s poem was interesting I never knew he was a writer. Also interesting was hearing from George Takei about the making of the movie. Some stuff I already knew like the studio not wanting Shatner back if it was going to be a series, and the difficulty in getting Leonard to sign on when it became a movie.

The stuff about who got to be credited in the movie I never once heard about the disputes with the effects people. A lot of the guy who wrote it hating the movie and being negative Harold I think. You could tell he thought it was a turkey. Also, the director had such a bad experience, and the movie was rushed I never knew that.

Or was it Jon Povill my memory these days is crap. I know whoever the person was hated the finished movie.

i imagine the writers/abrams etc are trying to figure out to do a standalone thing with the cast like Beyond (i.e. their TMP and TUC in one movie) or buy into the multiverse stuff going around and have them interact with their primeverse counterparts (via CG/AI ) or the TNG cast etc for a big anniversary movie ..

maybe they’ll go with the 1st option (Kelvin standalone/finale) and do a primeverse only ST Legacy movie for Paramount+ (various actors from TNG/DS9/VOY maybe ENT and SNW) – both aimimg for 2026

I mean you have a 40 something year old playing a 25 year old Kirk on Strange New Worlds and he looks older than Pine!

The casting decision there continues to baffle me. And yeah I agree, Pine does look younger than Wesley.

Now, Wesley has grown on me a bit, but it does still baffle me as well. He reminds me more of Crawley’s Kirk (fan film) than Shatner’s Kirk, and that’s not a good thing.

Yikes, you just hit the nail on the head there.

Ummm…..

Admiral deciding he’s sick of being in a desk job…kinda like last time?

In ’09, the snark was to call this Trek/Muppet Babies in Space. The then producers wanted a cast that could last for several movies without getting too old. AND… that might have worked if the studio(S!) hadn’t delayed so many of these films. Frankly, we should have five or six, not three. Thank god, the suits all got their bonuses and golden parachutes (several deployed btw) and important stuff like that.

We’ve seen how the Prime Kirk ages from young captain to admiral to old captain. It would be interesting to see Kelvin Kirk take a different pathway. Maybe he has a family. Maybe he is stuck in a Klingon prison. Maybe he is riding through the desert with a picnic lunch.

If JJ was available and Skydance ends up buying Paramount, they should get him to direct part 4. Make it an event movie, no more nonsense about spinoffs or low budget this or that. Disney Star Wars is dead. Capitalize on that.

Should have gone all in after Into Darkness, instead they played it safe with Beyond a tired old formula. Should have been new worlds, new twists if we had to have characters from Prime, do something different with them in Kelvin now that they were done with Khan, but no they had to make insipid Beyond. Guardians of the Furious.

I think you’re right. Go all out and make a final, great film for the Kelvinverse characters.

As to where they go with it, I don’t know. The simplest thing is to just have them on the ship, maybe coming home from their mission and then they get a call about an emergency. One last adventure. Maybe someone has to die, for drama. Maybe somehow, someway, via the Nexus or Q or the Guardian of Forever, Pine meets Shatner’s Kirk. Yeah, that probably will not happen but that would certainly help the film if they could find some way to make it an important part of the film.

Anyway, I’m all in for another Kelvin film. I loved all three of them, even though I had quibbles with some of JJ’s choices in Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness and thought making Sulu gay in Beyond was a complete and embarrassing fail.

Sulu being gay in ‘beyond’ a minor issue compared to the film’s real faults

Good point about SW its cooked atm, no movies being made anytime soon , that Rey movie not even the hard core wants and the Dawn of the Force movie from Mangold (whose Indiana Jones movie tanked to tune of a 100m loss), and the other film based on the Zahn novels like an Episode 6.5 (probably with not quite there CGI deaged Han Luke Leia) , any of those probably as likely to happen anytime soon as the Beyond sequel after 2016, (a loong wait with lots of faux announcements). so really you got similar scenario as that late 00s/early 10s era with ST09/ID filling in for SW for space action.

And yeah they messed up on Beyond , letting Orci go when he had the obvious way to go for the 3rd film/anniversary – Shatner returning, battle for the timelines stuff.

The last SW film to feature rey made a billion so there is still an audience waiting for a new one. But I bet rey will not be the central character this time.

Reading between the lines here……”a lot older” suggests he knows another movie is still years, maybe even decades away.

I think Pine’s just resigned to whatever happens will happen. He’s not getting his hopes up.

I think the 4th film should be titled, Star Trek: Kirk.

I wish they can adapt William Shatner’s first Star Trek story, Ashes of Eden.

Kelvin cast sequel is the ONLY viable movie worth making at this stage. Anything else will bomb hard.

I remember watching “Beyond” in the theater. No way that was 8 years ago already… wow.

Time flies. I also watched Beyond in the theater, and out of the three Kelvin-verse films it felt the most Trekkian to me. I can remember the smell of the popcorn and the twizzlers from that day.

The age of the crew or the actors is not the biggest problem with previous or upcoming films.

If it another ‘mad man with a grudge and a galactic WMD….’

If it is that, then I’m out. I blame TNG movies for first getting stuck on that, but it seems to be the only thing Hollywood screenwriters think a Star Trek film could ever possibly be about.

We need another ‘voyage home’, classic ST problem solving and not ‘pew pew boom’ again

They should adapt the Prime Directive novel for the next film. I would go see it. I doubt any of these writers know the book exists.

Would be wasted on the Kelvin cast. Great book, but it’s absolutely Shatner’s Kirk here, not anybody else’s. A book that makes so much out of ‘let me help’ doesn’t have the right callback, since Pine doesn’t have an Edith Keeler … it would be like the bizarre consideration Eon had for LIVE & LET DIE, when they considered bringing Ursula Andress back, even though it was featuring a new (utterly lame) guy playing Bond, so, you know, the face is not familiar.

Thats the first I’ve heard of bringing back Ursula Andress for LALD,(not impossible as the son of Quarrel from Dr No was in it) i had heard that producers wanted Barbara Bach to come back for A View to A Kill in a cameo as the Russian agent but obviously didn’t happen

And Roger Moore was the best Bond btw (imo :)

Meh. Some of the original cast members of Star Trek found about a hundred ways to keep on showing up despite being decades older. It’s sci-fi! All ya gotta do to explain stuff away is wave your hands around in the air and say stuff like, “quantum singularity!” or “it’s The Borg! The Borg did a thing!”. Inexplicable aging and time-space continuum inconsistancies are basically all one 8-second mumbo-jumbo explanation away with that franchise. It’ah be fiiiiiiine. lol

In general, I prefer a story with more “seasoned” characters, so it’s not a bad place to pick up for me. Showing the characters more matured is one of the major draws of a sequel.

It’s simple Chris – it’s time to put on the Monster Maroons! He’ll look as old as Shat from TWOK, TSFS, TVH

Also dark rinse with perm

Star trek 4 need a title like New horizon coming summer 2026 and the New starship enterprise a on a mission to explore strange New worlds and New villian of This epic final chapter of the kelvin timeline im a Star trek fan long live trekkies live long and prosper

Star Trek Wayyyy Beyond

Pull the plug on the Kelvin timeline and crew.

At some point Vger should be showing up to destroy Earth in the alternate universe that diverged with the Kelvin incident. I don’t want to see The Motion Picture remade but there might be a story there to tell somewhere …..

Use elements from Ellison’s intro to his movie pitch (which also had a huge threat to earth, but from time travelling lizards), with a cloaked figure going round kidnapping members of the old crew from wherever they are now and you finally realize it is Kirk who is doing it. Then do a variation on TMP, maybe with less of a police-procedural feel, one where we get to see how tough it is to match speeds and fly alongside something at warp 7+ from 1500 away .

Willl never happen

Whatever the next movie is, Giacchino’s going to have to write a new score, this time called “Enterprising Old Men “.

It will be a hit, and there will be a sequel.

It worked in Star Trek II…

I’d like to see throwback to Star Trek IV, where the Kelvin crew visit the world(s) that sent the alien probe to locate humpback whales.

They can maybe use stock footage from Lynch’s DUNE, since, like TVH, it also featured giant Tootsie-roll lookin’ space vessels.

A while ago I posted the idea of ST4 having the whale probe attacking kelvin earth a’la TVH and the JJ crew go back to San Fran 1986 for some whales but have to avoid running into their primeverse counterparts (TOS cast via cgi deaging and footage from TVH like Trials&Tribulations, BTTF2, Avengers Endgame etc), along the way they encounter/team up with Eddie Murphy’s UFO believing college professor called ‘Gene’ and kirk meets/romances an 80s aerobics instructor (Gal Gadot , but now maybe Dua Lipa whod also do the 80s inspired official song a’la Rhianna/Beyond ) who helps them out, plus thered be Lt Saavik (some new hot young actress) along for the ride replacing Chekov

I just get the feeling something fun and trippy and nostalgic like that would probably hit big at the box office (and avoid the usual super angry madman villain with space WMD who wants revenge on the Federation trope thats been done for the past 5? movies)

“It’s a pity”: Chris Pine is Right – Paramount Ending J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek With 4th Movie is the Weasel’s Way Out

Chris Pine mentioned that ending the Star Trek film franchise after the fourth film would be a mistake and the studio was taking the wrong path.

Chris Pine and Star Trek

  • Chris Pine played the role of Captain James T Kirk in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot that began in 2009.
  • The film series has seen three films, with a fourth one going through multiple iterations with several high-profile directors.
  • Pine mentioned that the studio was taking the wrong route with the films and they should not end the franchise with the fourth film.

Chris Pine and J.J. Abrams collaborated to introduce the suave Starfleet captain James T. Kirk to a whole new generation of fans with the Star Trek films. Beginning in 2009, the reboot saw Pine play the iconic character along with Zachary Quinto playing the role of Spock. The duo starred together in three films.

While a fourth film has been in development for a long time, with many directors changing, Pine mentioned that he heard rumors about the fourth film being the last of the franchise. However, the actor also mentioned that Paramount was making a mistake by ending the franchise and was looking at its fandom the wrong way.

Chris Pine Opened Up About The Star Trek Films Ending After The Fourth One

Chris Pine as James T. Kirk

While the Star Trek franchise has been leading on the small screen, with multiple successful spinoff shows, the franchise’s big-screen endeavors seem to be struggling. Despite J.J. Abrams’ film reboot doing good at the box office, the fourth film of the franchise has been facing many hurdles to come to fruition.

“Why would they do this again..”: Warner Bros Signing J.J. Abrams Again After His Old $250 Million Contract Turned into a Disaster is Not Something Fans Saw Coming

After multiple filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Noah Hawley, and Matt Shakman being attached to the project at various intervals, the film is currently in limbo. A film centered on Michelle Yeoh’s Captain Philippa Georgiou called Section 31 is the only feature film in active development.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto

Chris Pine , who played James T. Kirk in the Abrams films mentioned that he was excited to portray the character again and wanted to join his friends. He also mentioned that he had heard that the fourth film of the franchise would be the last. He said to Uproxx ,

I think it’d be a lot of fun. And as I’ve said, I think there’s a journey with this group of people and this… They’ve said that it’s the last one that they’re making as we’re aging out, this cast. It’s a pity that they’re saying it’s the last one. Because I think there are a lot of great stories to tell.

Pine mentioned that there were still many stories to tell in the franchise and that the studio was looking at the IP in the wrong way.

Chris Pine Criticized Paramount’s Direction With Star Trek

The Star Trek Crew from Star Trek: Beyond

Since the 1960s, Star Trek has established itself as a worthy competitor to multiple sci-fi franchises, including Star Wars . While George Lucas’ space opera has been a great big-screen attraction and has earned billions of dollars, the Gene Roddenberry-created franchise has made itself home on TV.

“Some things… I didn’t want to do”: J.J. Abrams Admitted The Force Awakens Had Many Things He Didn’t Agree With, Diehard Star Wars Fans Can Easily Name a Few

“Some things… I didn’t want to do”: J.J. Abrams Admitted The Force Awakens Had Many Things He Didn’t Agree With, Diehard Star Wars Fans Can Easily Name a Few

However, the studio, Paramount Pictures still seems to be aiming at tackling biggies like Marvel and Star Wars with its IP and will reportedly reboot the film franchise after the fourth entry. Chris Pine mentioned on multiple occasions that this was the wrong decision for the franchise as its fandom was different. He said to Esquire ,

I always thought, ‘Why aren’t we just appealing to this really rabid fan group and making the movie for a good price and going on our merry way, instead of trying to compete with the Marvels of the world?’ After the last one came out and didn’t do the $1 billion that everybody wanted it to do, and then Anton…passed away…

The franchise faced a significant blow when actor Anton Yelchin passed away in 2016. The fourth film has since been in development hell.

Star Trek is currently available to stream on Paramount+.

Psychological thriller fans eagerly anticipate director Olivia Wilde 's upcoming tense and mind-bending film, Don't Worry Darling . In part due to the cast, but also due to the significant media attention and drama that has followed this film . Alice Chambers ( Florence Pugh ) is a happy 1950s wife and homemaker living in the company town of Victory in the 1950s with her husband, Jack ( Harry Styles ). Everything seems perfect until she begins to sense something is off about Victory and the company Jack works for. Frank, played by Chris Pine , is seen in the trailer actively leading the community and openly challenging Alice's suspicions. He also lives in Victory with his beautiful wife, Shelley ( Gemma Chan ). Viewers can already sense the gaslighting in his smirk, when he folds his hands and leans forward with, "I'm curious to see where she's going with this."

Just from the trailer, we can see that Pine falls into this role of a beautiful, yet potentially threatening and most definitely manipulative, man effortlessly. Finally, Don't Worry Darling , after all the online chaos and gossip, is finally in theaters. As to when we'll see Don't Worry Darling come to streaming, no date has been set. But since Warner Bros. is behind the controversial movie, it's sure to hit HBO Max sometime towards the end of 2022 or early 2023. As we see Chris Pine take on another role and surely make it as memorable as he has done throughout his career, here's how you watch his other movies, from the Star Trek movies to Wonder Woman .

Star Trek 2009 Ending & Movies Future Explained

Naruto live-action movie gets encouraging update from original writer, saving private ryan moment that feels like movie magic is accurate, says wwii historian.

  • Chris Pine stars as Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot movies, which revitalized the franchise after previous films failed to perform.
  • The success of Abrams' Star Trek trilogy showed that iconic roles like Kirk and Spock could be successfully recast, inspiring new Star Trek series.
  • Chris Pine's Star Trek movies can be streamed on Paramount+ and other services, and they are also available for rent on various platforms.

Chris Pine stars as Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot movies produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, also known as the Kelvin Timeline movies. Abrams reinvigorated the Star Trek brand with his 2009 film about characters from Star Trek: The Original Series, after the fourth Star Trek: The Next Generation movie, Star Trek: Nemesis , failed to perform at the box office amidst dismal reviews from critics and fans alike.

In addition to Chris Pine's Kirk, Abrams' Star Trek movies cast Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock, Zoe Saldaña as Lt. Nyota Uhura, Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, and Leonard Nimoy as Ambassador Spock. The success of Abrams' Star Trek trilogy proved that the franchise could successfully recast iconic roles like Kirk and Spock, and Abrams' films inspired the cinema-quality visuals of Star Trek: Discovery and the new wave of Star Trek series on Paramount+ from 2017 into the present day.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 saw the young Kirk and Spock join forces to save Earth. A deep dive into how Star Trek 2009 ended and what it all means.

How Many Chris Pine Star Trek Movies Are There?

There are three Star Trek movies starring Chris Pine. Star Trek (2009) is an introduction to the new cinematic series, as Pine's James Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Mr. Spock come together to save the day despite their fiercely clashing philosophies, with Leonard Nimoy's Ambassador Spock passing the proverbial torch to his younger self. Star Trek: Into Darkness sees Starfleet take extraordinary means to increase its defenses in the wake of the previous film's conflicts, with Benedict Cumberbatch as the villainous Khan Noonien Singh . In Star Trek: Beyond (2016), the Enterprise crew faces off against brand-new enemy Krall (Idris Elba), with help from newcomer Jaylah (Sofia Boutella).

Where To Watch Chris Pine’s Star Trek Movies

Chris Pine's Star Trek movies can be watched on limited streaming services and are also available to rent online. In North America, Great Britain, Europe, and Australia, all three Chris Pine Star Trek movies are available to stream for subscribers on Paramount+, and services that have a Paramount+ channel, like Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, Roku (US) and Binge (Australia). In the United States, Star Trek (2009) is also on Hulu, and Star Trek: Into Darkness is also on DIRECTV. Star Trek movies starring Chris Pine are available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube, Amazon Prime, and Microsoft Movies, as well as region-specific video rental services like Sky and Rakuten in the UK and Cineplex Store in Canada.

Kelvin Timeline In Chris Pine's Star Trek Movies Explained

The timeline that Chris Pine's Star Trek movies take place in is known as the Kelvin Timeline, to differentiate it from the Prime Timeline that the Star Trek TV shows and all the films prior to 2009's reboot take place in. The Kelvin Timeline so named because of its inflection point, in which the USS Kelvin is destroyed by the time-traveling Romulan ship Narada. James Kirk's father, George (Chris Hemsworth), goes down with the Kelvin, so Chris Pine's Kirk never knows his father, and grows up to be a very different character from the James Kirk played by William Shatner in Star Trek: The Original Series.

In previous time travel stories in Star Trek , alternate realities are created when a point of divergence creates a new, branching timeline, but the Kelvin Timeline doesn't work that way. Instead, the Narada's appearance 150 years in the past creates a ripple effect that reverberates throughout the Kelvin Timeline, causing changes to both its past and its future. This means even events prior to the inflection point may be different from those in Star Trek: The Original Series, allowing for narrative changes such as Chris Pine's Kirk being born in space instead of Iowa, and an in-universe explanation of the updated production design not matching the 1960s aesthetic from TOS.

Will There Be Star Trek 4 Starring Chris Pine?

There's certainly interest in seeing Chris Pine's Captain Kirk back on the silver screen, but creative differences and scheduling conflicts have prevented Star Trek 4 from being realized. Between 2016 and 2020, three different scripts were written. Quentin Tarantino's gangster-inspired Star Trek film was a tonal departure that never took off. The father-son story between Pine's James Kirk and Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk was slashed after Star Trek: Beyond 's disappointing box office figures. Noah Hawley's third version of Star Trek 4 left the Kelvin Timeline behind , projecting a new direction for the franchise, but was also shelved in 2020.

The success of new Star Trek TV series like Star Trek: Discovery reinvigorated audience interest as well as Paramount's faith in Star Trek . A new version of Star Trek 4 was announced at a Paramount investor event in February 2022, with several actors set to return, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldaña. With a release date set for June (later December) 2023, it looked like Star Trek 4 might finally be made, but director Matt Shakman's departure from the project in spring 2022 left Star Trek 4 adrift. As of October 2023, plans for a fourth Star Trek movie with Chris Pine remain nebulous at best, but there's still hope as the studio continues its search for a director.

Paramount is getting the Enterprise gang back together. No, not the 1960s series turned film series cast, but rather the cast of the J.J. Abrams relaunch that debuted in 2009 and went on to star in two subsequent movies.

Paramount executive Brian Robbins and producer Abrams made the announcement at Paramount’s investor event Tuesday, although details were not revealed. No deals are in place, but Paramount hopes that returning castmembers will include Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña and John Cho, who have starred in three films, beginning with 2009’s Star Trek .

The announcement signals a breakthrough to relaunch Trek on the big screen. The studio has been trying to regroup the cast since at least in 2018, when negotiations with Pine and Chris Hemsworth, who had a small role in Abrams’ 2009 film, fell through . Since then, Paramount has tried to redevelop the project, with creatives such as Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley taking stabs at films that did not move forward. Pine also played Captain Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and  Star Trek Beyond (2016), the last big-screen outing.

In recent years, Trek primarily has lived on the small screen, with numerous streaming shows on Paramount+ including Star Trek Discovery  and  Picard . Executives at Paramount’s investor day noted the company was focused on creating franchises that lived both on the Paramount+ streaming service and on the big screen, with other projects announced including a third  Sonic the Hedgehog  movie as well as a live-action TV spinoff starring Idris Elba’s Knuckles.  Filmmaker John Krasinski also revealed his  A Quiet Place Part III  will arrive in 2025.

The next Trek film is due in theaters Dec. 22, 2023. See an early logo below.

Star Trek Into Darkness

  • Trivia After production on the film was completed, and a month before the release, Anton Yelchin died in a freak vehicle accident at age 27. During the ending credits, there is a dedication that reads, "For Anton." J.J. Abrams announced that Chekov would not be recast, "I would say you can't replace him. There will be no new casting. I can't imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better."
  • Goofs The amount of ships and soldiers that the enemy has in its swarm changes dramatically during the final battle, from a few thousand to tens/hundreds of thousands when they attack the station. However, previously in the film, it is stated that the planet has deep and large underground caverns so it is entirely possible that there were more ships underground. Also, the amount of soldiers that would be needed to pilot all the ships would be huge as it was shown that they contain at least one soldier in each ship. But when they were watching the video logs near the film's ending, Captain Edison clearly states that they found drones. It is quite possible that the bulk of the enemy fleet is made up of drones and controlled by the hive mind that the music disrupts.

Doctor 'Bones' McCoy : [after removing shrapnel from Spock] Yeah. They say it hurts less if it's a surprise.

Commander Spock : If I may adopt a parlance with which you are familiar, I can confirm your theory to be horseshit.

  • Crazy credits There is a giant green energy-hand, in the closing credits, mentioned in the movie as one of the possibilities for a ship lost in space.

How To Watch Every ‘Star Trek’ Movie and TV Show

Where to stream:, ‘the acolyte’s cancellation begs the question: what do audiences even want out of a star wars show, stream it or skip it: ‘star trek: prodigy’ season 2 on netflix, where the ragtag group of teen starfleet trainees join janeway on a dangerous mission, ‘star trek iii’ at 40: the story of how (and why) leonard nimoy brought spock back after being killed off in ‘the wrath of khan’, ‘star trek: strange new worlds’ renewed for season 4 at paramount+.

Since 1966, Star Trek has boldy gone where no man had gone before, and to this day, that mission continues.

What started as one three-season TV series 57 years ago has morphed into over 10 shows and 13 movies, which explore, in addition to the original series’ timeline, an alternate one that serves as a soft reboot on the franchise as a whole.

The legacy of Star Trek begins with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy , who left their mark on pop culture with their portrayals of Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, and even today, we’re still seeing iconic actors leave their mark on the franchise — Patrick Stewart returned as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Paramount+ original series Star Trek: Picard after 18 years away from the role. The third and final season of Picard began airing on February 16.

Below, we’ve broken down where you can watch every Star Trek movie and TV show, both on streaming services and paid video on-demand platforms, along with details on how the various timelines and which shows and movies fall into them.

Where To Watch Star Trek TV Shows

Unlike the films, all Star Trek TV series including all three animated series exist within the same timeline, even though they weren’t released in timeline order. The Original Series falls just about in the middle of the timeline.

A few of the series, including Enterprise , Discovery , and Strange New Worlds are technically prequels to The Original Series, so they take place before it in the timeline, while The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , and Voyager all take place in the years following the end of TOS.

Where to watch Star Trek Movies

The final three movies in the Star Trek franchise (the ones starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock) are the only ones that don’t take place in the same timeline as the TV shows and their corresponding movies — the first six movies star The Original Series cast, while the next four take place during Next Gen.

Pine and Quinto’s movies take place in an alternate original series timeline, known as the Kelvin timeline because the inciting incident that changes the timeline is a critical failure aboard the USS Kelvin. While everything else in the Star Trek timeline is co-dependent to a degree, these three movies stand alone as an isolated trilogy.

Chris Pine Shares Honest (And Confused) Response To Star Trek 4’s Latest Update

Star Trek 4 is still in development, and even Chris Pine is confused about what's going on.

Chris Pine in Star Trek Beyond

The Star Trek franchise is a beloved piece of pop culture, making up some of the best sci-fi movies of all time . While the franchise continues to expand on the small screen for those with a Paramount+ subscription , fans have been wondering about its future on the big screen after the ending of Star Trek Beyond back in 2016. And lead actor Chris Pine recently shared his honest (and confused) response to Star Trek 4 's latest update.

Back in March it was revealed that S tar Trek 4 was back in development with new screenwriter Steve Yockey. While this was exciting for fans who want to see some of the best Star Trek characters return, it seems to have caught the current cast off guard. While speaking with Business Insider , Pine expressed some confusion, offering:

I honestly don't know. There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it's always been with Trek, I just wait and see.

There you have it. Despite being Kirk himself, it seems like even Chris Pine doesn't know what the studio is cooking up with Star Trek 4 . He thought there was a script, but it seems they're changing course for the upcoming sci-fi movie. Hopefully more information is released to the public soon (as well as the cast).

Pine's comments show how quickly things change in the entertainment industry, including in giant tentpole blockbusters. Things are constantly in flux, and it seems like Paramount is taking special care with exactly how they bring the reboot cast back for another blockbuster.

Known colloquially as the Kelvin timeline, The Enterprise was brought back to theaters starting with J.J. Abrams ' 2009 Star Trek. That movie and its first sequel were wild successes, although the threequel Beyond had a more lukewarm reception upon its release. And since its release in 2016 fans have not-so-patiently been waiting for the beloved crew to suit up for another mission across the stars.

If/when another Star Trek movie ends up filming, it's no doubt going to be a very different experience for the cast. Namely because back in 2016 actor Anton Yelchin died suddenly when his car rolled back onto him in his driveway. The cast went through the marketing process for Star Trek Beyond while mourning, and it would no doubt be emotional to be back on set without the beloved Chekov actor with them.

Only time will tell when Star Trek 4 finally starts shooting a new movie, all these years after Beyond was released. The cast isn't getting any younger, so time is seemingly of the essence. For his part Chris Pine seems down to return. In the meantime, check the 2024 movie release dates .

Star Trek is back in a big way. The franchise is going strong on Paramount+ through new original TV shows , with the recent Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiering to positive reviews while Star Trek: Picard finished season two. Paramount also announced the long-awaited fourth Star Trek film in the recent series, which will see Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Karl Urban return to the franchise following a seven-year hiatus from Star Trek Beyond . The franchise is now arguably the most popular and readily available that it's been in its entire history, gaining new fans every day.

The Star Trek film series currently includes 13 films and spans multiple generations of different crews that weave in and out of the different series. They form one giant massive timeline that builds off one another to show humanity's future among the stars and the constantly changing relationship between various alien species. If the 13 films seem daunting, and you're not sure how everything relates, take a look at this list that details the Star Trek film series in chronological and release order.

Update November 23, 2023: This article has been updated with where each entry in the Star Trek film is currently streaming and more details on each film in the franchise.

Star Trek Movies In Chronological Order

Star trek: the motion picture.

  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Star trek iv: the voyage home, star trek v: the final frontier, star trek vi: the undiscovered country, star trek: generations, star trek: first contact, star trek: insurrection, star trek: nemesis, star trek into darkness, star trek beyond, star trek: the motion picture (1979).

Star Trek: The Motion Picture takes place in 2273, five years after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, and finds Kirk and his crew retaking control of the renovated Enterprise to investigate a mysterious cloud of energy that has destroyed Federation and Klingon ships. The movie was a massive hit, yet the critical reaction was more on the mixed side than Paramount expected. Even with how much money the studio put into it, bringing in Academy Award-winner Robert Wise to direct, the film was seen as a disappointment, yet has found a cult status and recently got the director's cut released in 4K .

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is available for streaming on Paramount+

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Star trek 2: the wrath of khan.

A massive time jump, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan takes place in 2285, 13 years after the events of the previous film and 18 years since the original series ended. This film is less a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and more to season one, episode 22, or 'Space Seed,' from the original series, which now finds that episode's villain, Khan, seeking revenge on Kirk for marooning him on Ceti Alpha V. The movie sees an older Kirk wrestling with his age, and in the ultimate sign of time moving forward, Kirk loses his old friend Spock when the Vulcan-human hybrid sacrifices his life to save the crew of the Enterprise.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan also serves as the first part in a three-movie story arc, often referred to by fans as The Genesis Trilogy (named after the Genesis device which becomes a key factor in the life/death cycle the three films explore), one that continues in the following two sequels. While not making as much money as the previous film, Wrath of Khan had a smaller budget, so the profits of the film were greater and the film helped relaunch the popularity of the franchise. It still remains arguably the most acclaimed film of the franchise.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

Picking up shortly after the previous film, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock takes place in 2285 and focuses on Kirk and the Enterprise Crew's attempt to resurrect Spock when they find out his spirit has been left inside Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, which involves stealing the Enterprise from the Federation. Meanwhile, the crew must contend with a Klingon crew led by Kurge (Christopher Lloyd) who seeks to steal information on the genesis device.

Star Trek 4: Why Chris Hemsworth Turned Down Returning to the Franchise

Chris Hemsworth was tied to the upcoming Star Trek 4 at one point. Here's why the Thor actor turned down returning to the franchise.

The movie resurrects Spock but also sees another beloved member of the crew perish: this time in the form of the Enterprise. While the ship will be rebuilt, this marks the final appearance of the ship that Kirk and his crew piloted since the original series. Another major plot point is the death of Kirk's son (who was established in the previous film), killed at the hands of Klingons, which will go on to inform Kirk's bias a few films later.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home picks up shortly after the previous film, with the Enterprise crew returning to Earth to face trial for stealing the Enterprise to resurrect Spock; however, they find the planet is in grave danger when a mysterious alien probe cannot communicate with any humpback whales. To save the Earth, the crew travels back in time to 1986 (the release date of the film) to try to find a group of whales to bring back to the future. The movie concludes the Genesis Trilogy, and due to its fish out of water aspect was a massive success even outside the Star Trek fanbase, grossing more than both previous entries.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Set in 2287, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier focuses on the exploits of the Enterprise-A (the new ship that replaces the destroyed Enterprise) as they confront a renegade Vulcan who is attempting to search for God at the center of the universe. While opening big, the film had massive drop-offs in the following weeks due to poor word of mouth and competition from other summer movies like Ghostbusters II and Batman. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier almost killed the franchise for many, but the studio wanted to give the classic crew of the original series one final and proper goodbye.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

Released in 1991, 35 years after the premiere of Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was to give the original cast their proper goodbyes. The movie is set in 2293, which makes it 24 years after the events of the original series. The Undiscovered Country acts as the end of the Cold War, but in space, the destruction of the Klingon moon, Praxis, leads the Klingon Empire to pursue peace with their longtime adversary, the Federation. However, a military conspiracy threatens to destroy the potential peace as Kirk is framed for a crime based on his prejudice towards Klingons for killing his son in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock .

Every Star Trek TV Series, Ranked

Ahead of the release of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, take a look at how all the series in the franchise rank against one another.

The movie ends as a proper conclusion to the original Star Trek series, as the two iconic foes of the Klingons and Federation have now found peace. With the Enterprise set to be decommissioned, Kirk and his crew take one final trip on the ship with the final mission log so that new crews, new ships and more will carry on their legacy, commenting on the future laid out in Star Trek series like The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , and Voyager .

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Generations (1994)

A passing of the torch film between the crew of the original series and Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Generations is the iconic meeting between the two captains, Kirk and Picard . The movie's prologue is set in 2293, shortly after the events of Star Trek VI: The Voyage Home, while the main action of the film is 2371, 78 years later and one year after Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The movie marks the final adventure for William Shatner's incarnation of James Kirk, and while it will not be the last time the character appears thanks to the reboot, it serves as a true end for the original series and full acknowledgment of Star Trek: The Next Generation being the face of the franchise for the 1990s.

Star Trek: Generations is available for streaming on Paramount+

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

Set two years after the previous film in 2273, Star Trek: First Contact sees The Borg as the film's primary villain and follows the crew of the Enterprise-D as they pursue the villainous species back in time, with the Borg's primary objective to take over in the past. The film borrows the time travel element of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and primarily is set on April 4, 2023, which is the day before Earth makes contact with alien life and begins the steps for the Federation of Planets to form, thanks to the work of Zefram Cochrane (James Cromwell), whose first successful warp drive creation draws the attention of the Vulcans.

Thanks to a heavy marketing push, Star Trek: First Contact was a major box office hit and also received positive reviews from critics, and until the release of 2009's Star Trek, was the best-performing film of the franchise internationally. Fans all over the world now celebrate April 5th as First Contact Day .

Star Trek: First Contact is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

In 2375, Star Trek: Insurrection sees the crew of the Enterprise-D rebel against Starfleet when they discover a conspiracy involving two alien species. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with many claiming it lacked the scope of a movie and felt more like an extended episode of television.

The events of Star Trek: Insurrection are taking place around the time of both Star Trek: Voyager and at the end of the story for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and while there are no major references to the events of the series or vice versa, it does show how big the franchise was at this point in time but also how the overexposure and years of continuity were starting to hamper it.

Star Trek: Insurrection is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

Star Trek: Nemesis takes place in 2379, meaning it is nine years after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation and 110 years since the end of the original series. Star Trek: Nemesis sees a clone of Picard (Tom Hardy, in his first movie), created by Romulans, take control of the Romulan Empire and seek war with the Federation.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Characters, Ranked in Order of Awesomeness

Engage! Star Trek: The Next Generation has long been arguably the favorite series for Trekkies, and these are the TV show's best characters.

The film received poor reviews from critics and was a box office bomb , becoming the lowest-grossing Star Trek film ever and was beaten out in its opening weekend box office by Maid in Manhattan . Combine that with competition from huge movies like Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , Die Another Day, and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers during the holiday season, and Star Trek: Nemesis was dead on arrival, marking the final adventure for the crew of The Next Generation until the release of Star Trek: Picard . The film's box office disappointment, combined with the cancelation of Star Trek: Enterprise three years, later marked a quiet point in the franchise , where it would take a big swing to bring the series back.

Star Trek: Nemesis is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek (2009)

Marketed as a prequel, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek is much more. It does show the origins of the original series cast but does so by taking place in an alternate reality that is kicked into motion by Spock from the original series traveling through a wormhole from 2387 (ten years after Star Trek: Nemesis ) that causes the timeline to split. So Star Trek is both a reboot, a prequel, and a sequel, as the events in Star Trek: The Original Series and all the following films need to happen to get Spock into a place to go back and time and create a new timeline, which will be called the Kelvin Timeline after the USS Kelvin, which is the ship at the center of the timeline divergence in 2233.

The great J.J. Abrams movie tells the story of how the crew of the Enterprise comes together, primarily taking place from 2258 to 2259, meaning that by the end of the film, when Kirk takes control of the Enterprise, it is earlier than the original timeline. The film was a surprisingly big success, grossing $386 million and becoming the highest-scoring Star Trek film on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to the polished production and great effects, the excellent work of the cast was largely responsible for this; as Ty Burr writes in The Boston Globe :

What lifts the Abrams film into the ether is the rightness of its casting and playing, from Saldana's Uhura, finally a major character after all these years, to Urban's loyal, dyspeptic McCoy, to Simon Pegg's grandly comic Scotty, the movie's most radical reimagining of a Star Trek regular.

Star Trek is available for streaming on Hulu and Paramount+.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

With a new timeline in place, Star Trek Into Darkness sees the crew of the Enterprise encounter Khan years earlier, as the destruction of Vulcan causes the Federation to explore space and find Khan and his crew about eight years earlier than the original timeline. Star Trek Into Darkness takes place one year after the 2009 Star Trek , meaning it is 2259. With Khan awakened earlier, and the butterfly effect nature of the timeline is rewritten, Kirk meets Carol Marcus (the mother of his child in the original timeline) earlier, and instead of Spock dying, it is Kirk. Yet Kirk is able to be resurrected much quicker than Spock.

The film ends with Kirk, Spock, and the crew on a rebuilt Enterprise ready to begin their five-year mission, and it is revealed they were waiting a year, meaning, that the five-year mission begins in 2260, six years before the original series. The modern-day cast of these Star Trek movies continues to excel, and the inclusion of a great Benedict Cumberbatch performance as Khan is a highlight.

Star Trek Into Darkness is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

The final film released so far in the Star Trek film series, Star Trek Beyond, is set three years into the Enterprise's five-year mission (a meta-joke about how the original series lasted three seasons). The movie finds Kirk and his Enterprise crew on an unexplored planet, encountering a hostile alien who has ties to the Federation.

Released to tie in with the 50th anniversary of the franchise, Star Trek Beyond serves as the perfect conclusion to the film series so far. When the Spock from the original timeline dies, he leaves the current Spock some of his belongings, which includes a photo of the crew from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . Seeing the life his alternate timeline version had, inspires this version to stay with his crew on a rebuilt Enterprise (this universe's version of Enterprise-A) to continue the adventure in a recently announced fourth film , whose production seems to be encountering several setbacks .

Star Trek Beyond is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek Films In Release Order

Unlike Star Wars , The MCU, or the X-Men movie series , the release order of Star Trek is the same as the chronological viewing order, making it a straightforward viewing experience. Historically, Star Trek has been a winter franchise, finding great success during the holiday weekends around Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, in recent years, all three Kelvin timeline films were summer releases.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Chris Pine

star trek streaming chris pine

Chris Pine is flying high. Star Trek (2009) catapulted him to Hollywood stardom, and he’s been riding the wave ever since, acting in Unstoppable, This Means War, People Like Us, Rise of the Guardians and the upcoming action-thriller Jack Ryan . Right now, though, Pine is back in the captain’s chair for Star Trek Into Darkness , reprising his role as James T. Kirk in the new adventure. StarTrek.com caught up with Pine in London for a conversation in which he talked in detail about Kirk and Star Trek Into Darkness -- even revealing what a lens flare is like on set – previewed Jack Ryan , and addressed the ways in which his new level of fame has affected his life and career.

StarTrek.com: How would you say the camaraderie has built between the actors from Star Trek (2009) to Star Trek Into Darkness ?

Chris Pine: Just like the natural progression of any friendship, or friendships, we really do get along quite well. There’s just this strong bond that we all share. I guess it speaks to J.J. (Abrams) casting this thing that, above and beyond the acting chops, he cast it well in the sense that we get along. If you’re going to put a family on the screen for years to come, you’d better hope that they have a love for one another, and we certainly do.

StarTrek.com: What elements of this story resonated most with you?

Chris Pine: What I was most excited about was that, for someone like who Kirk, for someone who you’d expect to be a strong and confident leader, and who, certainly from the first film had that self-assuredness, in this one I got to explore the flip side of that. The flip side is self-doubt and fallibility and this kind of existential crisis about whether or not he’s meant for the captain’s chair and whether or not he’s good enough. To begin a film and to carry the hero, or one of the heroes, from such a place of weakness, I thought that was an interesting challenge and one I looked forward.

StarTrek.com: Kirk and John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) have a lot of scenes together. Were you at all surprised by just how many scenes the characters shared?

Chris Pine: I guess I wasn’t at all that surprised because I knew how important John Harrison was to this story and, at least selfishly, to development of Kirk in this story. Kirk is unhinged. Kirk is filled with self-doubt. Kirk is the little dog barking all too loudly. And you needed to see that. The only way you could see that, really, is when has his fingers put to the fire. That’s in verbal combat with Benedict’s character. We’re separated in a lot of our scenes by a glass partition, and it just goes to show you how powerful his character is, that he can wield the strings like a puppet master over poor Jim Kirk with nothing but a batting of the eye and the inflection of a word.

StarTrek.com: We’ve been dying to ask this next question to someone in the cast, and you’re the lucky guy. What does a lens flare look like on set?

Chris Pine: (Laughs). For something that looks like it could be so complicated, I think it’s about as analog as getting a flashlight and pointing it toward the camera.

StarTrek.com: Zachary Quinto has said that he politely asked for and received a couple of pairs of Spock ears. Pegg said that he stole a combadge. What did you ask for or steal from the Star Trek Into Darkness set?

Chris Pine: I was too scared to steal anything because the security around the set was so tight and I’d signed so many NDA’s that I was worried that Brad Grey was going to show up to my house with a crew of Paramount police and arrest me. So I don’t have anything.

StarTrek.com: We’re guessing there’s going to be a third Star Trek film. Assuming that’s correct, what do you hope to see for Kirk in the next one?

Chris Pine: I’d like to see Kirk, whatever direction he goes in, still growing. I know that’s probably anathema to what fans want to see from their beloved Captain Kirk, but I don’t think he’s quite there yet. So I want to see him still growing.

StarTrek.com: The other assumption is that J.J. Abrams will be too busy with Star Wars to direct another Star Trek feature. Who from the Bad Robot family would you like to see assume his chair?

Chris Pine: In terms of a director, I don’t know. What I am sure of is that J.J. and company have a great respect for Star Trek , for the franchise, for the history, for the legacy of it, and for what they’ve done. I can’t see them walking away completely without making sure that whoever takes the helm is going to protect that.

StarTrek.com: How big a kick did you get shooting your bit for William Shatner’s documentary, The Captains ?

Chris Pine: Well, as you well know, Bill is a unique man, a passionate man. He’s got so much going on and such a lust for life and for his job. He loves doing what he does. He loves working. I guess I was struck by how insightful he was and the kinds of questions he asked. I was really honored to be a part of such a stellar crew of actors and people who have gotten to the chance to play a Star Trek captain.

StarTrek.com: Your next film is Jack Ryan. How different is Ryan from Kirk?

Chris Pine: Really, what excites me most is the fact that he’s so different from Kirk. Ryan is the thoughtful, quiet hero. He actually has many more qualities that resemble Spock than anything else. I think he’s a character who’s more comfortable using his mind and his wits, and his weapons seem to be his mind and his wits, rather than his fists and his brawn.

StarTrek.com: You’re becoming a collector of franchises…

Chris Pine: I’ve just been lucky that I’ve been able to surround myself with really, really talented people in an art form that’s one of the most collaborative art forms of them all. And I’m lucky that I’m in a position to work with the people more than once. You need to surround yourself with talented people, and I’ve been really lucky with J.J. Abrams and now ( Jack Ryan director) Ken Branagh.

The Star Trek Movie Franchise Is Finally Available to Stream For Free

One deadpool & wolverine actor broke 2 guinness world records with their role, the real villain of harry potter wasn't voldemort, key takeaways.

  • The Star Trek movie franchise has struggled to push forward with a fourth installment.
  • Paramount has seen success with new characters on Paramount+ but is facing pre-production issues with the next Star Trek film.
  • Paramount should consider rebooting the franchise with a new crew instead of revisiting previous films.

Star Trek is one of the longest running franchises, having originally debuted in September 1966. The series followed the crew of the USS Enterprise as they went on missions in space. While the original series only lasted three seasons, the franchise went on to spawn numerous television shows and films, including Paramount's most recent Star Trek film series. The most recent film, Star Trek Beyond , was released eight years ago and earned $343 million, which was enough for Paramount to plan a sequel.

Unfortunately, that sequel has yet to come to fruition, as Paramount has continued to go back to the drawing board with its fourth installment. While little is known regarding the upcoming film, it is expected to feature some - if not most - of the cast from the last three films. However, maybe it's time Paramount seeks to include a new crew for future films.

Star Trek's long line of films have never been easier to get at, and new fans of the franchise can dive in and binge them all.

Paramount Has Found Success With New Characters Already

While the films have received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, Paramount has found a fair amount of success with its offerings for Paramount+. A little over a year after Star Trek Beyond , Paramount released its first new Star Trek series with Star Trek: Discovery . The series, which featured a mostly new crew, began as a prequel to the original Star Trek: The Original Series , with the series jumping forward in time for its third season. Although some characters from the original series do appear - namely Spock - the series found its own success with its own crew of characters. So much so that Paramount continued to expand upon its television offerings, with Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Picard , and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . The studio even developed a kids-based Star Trek series with Star Trek: Prodigy . Not every show features a new crew of characters, but Paramount has continued to take risks and is even developing its first Star Trek movie for Paramount+ with Star Trek: Section 31 . Given the success Paramount has found on its streaming service, it's a bit surprising that the studio is having so many issues with its Star Trek universe on the big screen.

After eight years, Paramount has yet to figure out what it wants to do with Star Trek 4 . Yet, Paramount+ has continued to add to its already impressive line-up of characters, while Paramount seeks to try to reunite its Star Trek cast for another movie. The problem? The studio doesn't even seem to know what it's trying to do with the next film, with plot lines seemingly continuing to change with each new report and new director.

Star Trek 4 Has Already Proved to be a Huge Mess

The fourth Star Trek movie has yet to enter production, and the movie is already a huge mess. Over the past few years, Paramount has struggled to try and re-sign its cast from the first three movies. At one point in time, the holdup seemed to be with some of the cast members holding out, including leading man Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth, who was reported to reprise his role from the first J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. However, Pine seems to be the least of the film's worries, with Paramount having had issues securing a writer and director, with S.J. Jackson and Matt Shakman having boarded the project at various points in time, only to leave for superhero films. The studio even sought to develop a new Star Trek project, completely separate from its previous films, by Quentin Tarantino, but that project ultimately didn't move forward. So, why doesn't Paramount seek to start over with a brand-new crew instead of revisiting a series of films that has struggled 6o live long and prosper ?

Paramount+'s success with Star Trek on the small screen is proof that fans are eager for more of the beloved franchise. Instead of trying to move forward with an installment that seems well past its due date, Paramount should seek to craft a reboot featuring an all-new crew aboard the USS Enterprise. Allow the new crew to go on exciting and new missions. The Star Trek franchise has always sought to introduce new characters and crew members, with each series successfully building upon the lore before it. Star Trek 4 's continued pre-production issues are the perfect chance for a brand-new series of characters to be introduced, and Paramount would be smart to make it so.

As of now, Star Trek 4 no longer has a release date set.

Who's Your Favorite Vulcan In Star Trek?

Spock will always hold a place in my heart, but I also really love Tuvok from Voyager. He's solemn and logical as one would expect a Vulcan to be, but he's not above the occasional display of deadpan wit. His friendship with Janeway is an underrated aspect of the series. Tuvok is a source of stability and a voice of reason for his captain, balancing Janeway's occasional hotheaded or extreme decisions.
